Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Fun jazzy R&B definitely worth listening to

This is the funk recording of what your drunken behaviors, while snacking on a medium dose of chocolate, looks like from sober onlookers.

I genuinely enjoyed this album. It was genuinely perfect driving music. It was the perfect soundtrack to my commute.

modern classic

I was so pumped to see this album in the list, as I listen to it a ton in 2017 when it came out. It was particularly frequented while working out at the gym. It was ranked #17 on my favorite albums of 2017 list, an amazing year for LP releases, and I’d probably have it a few spots higher now. I love Drunk’s bizarre kaleidoscope of sounds and Thundercats ridiculous bass lines. It’s a bit of a trippy odyssey, and there’s something of a story to be found on the record. The final 1/3 of the record drags a little, and I think the album would have benefited from being one or two tracks fewer. That said it was a blast to revisit this one.

A fun album although the back half sort of drags on. Definitely some fat that could have been cut. I love the funky bass grooves. They make most of Drunk's shortcomings forgivable. The soft vocals are pretty enjoyable most of the way through as well. The lyrics are kind of goofy sometimes but that doesn't bother me too much.

Smoooooooooth

This album was super fun in my opinion. A bunch of super short tracks/concepts that all kinda work together. Throw in a cool couple of features, and you got yourself an album baybeeee

Feels like most popular memes have audio from this album, which was great because I felt like I was familiar with most of the tracks. Absolutely loved the funk and vaporwave sounds throughout the album. The humor included never felt out of place or corny, it was mostly just relatable, especially on Tokyo when he talks about learning to love Japanese popular culture. I'm so tempted to give this album five stars, but I think its a four. Might give this album a listen if it snows this weekend and see if I feel stronger about a higher rating.

What the fuck did I just listen to? I want to give it both 5 stars and 1 star at the same time. It was definitely an interesting listen. I was engaged the whole time trying to figure out what was coming next. Definitely deserves to be on the list.

Very well done. It’s kind of it’s on genre in a sense. I will listen to it again stoned

For an artist and album I've never heard of before this was a really fun and funny listen.

It's fun to hear someone so talented not take himself seriously at all

beat your meat, go to sleep 💔 mal was ganz anderes, das eine lied kennt man ja, ganz nice

non conoscevo tranne them changes ed è stata un bella scoperta. paradossalmente apprezzo meno tracce come them changes oppure drunk dat, e mi sono invece piaciute moltissimo cose come uh uh, bus in these streets e jameel’s space ride

album interessante, sonorità morbide e calde (boh). Mi è piaciuto questo stile di rnb

Album No. 0118 on my list. I had heard of the name "Thundercat" before, but that was about it - before it appearing in the generator, I had never heard any of this stuff. Which is a shame, because "Drunk" is indeed a pretty cool album! I love how groovy it is - it just sounds very cool, there's no better way for me to describe this. Just a cool sound, a cool mix of R&B, Hip Hop and Electronica. Even with a little funk mixed in. I actually appreciate the shortness of the songs on this album, it gives the album a lot of dynamic without ever loosing consistency. It's really just a constant stream of small and mid-sized music bits. I'll add "Captain Stupido", "Show You The Way", "Tokyo", and "Them Changes" to my playlist. There are various more cool songs on this, even though I have to admit that the relativ shortness of songs and the aforementioned constant stream of music makes few songs really stand out. Anyway, the four mentioned songs were nevertheless the ones that I liked the most. 4/5 stars!

Really cool. Short, snappy songs, great flow, interesting vocals. Really liked this.

Seen this album art pop up now and again, very enjoyable. Song with Wiz Khalifa is embarassingly bad writing though 4/5

Funny, chaotic and weird. Absolutely loved this album. The themes range from poignant to funny. 4/5

I was excited when I got this album this album for two reasons; I was already familiar with the song "Them Changes" which I like a whole lot, and the album cover is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, the album didn't quite meet the expectations I had set for it. It could have been an easy 5/5 for me if the rest of the songs gave at least somewhat similar energy as "Them Changes", but as it is, I'll give it a 4. It was still enjoyable and at times pretty fun. Other stand-out songs were "Walk On By", "Friend Zone" and "Drink That". I would have preferred fewer songs with longer run times to explore some of the ideas a bit further.

Wasn't sure at first, as the first couple songs are pretty full-on, but as it turned to more of a funk vibe than jazz I was really into it. Probably closer to a 3.5/5

Really enjoyed, fit the Christmas vibes perfectly.

Fav: Show Me The Way Least Fav: 3AM Cut this in half and it’s a 5/5

Rating high for the entertainment value alone.

I really like this album and was pleased to see it on the list. There is nothing that Thundercat can't do with a bass guitar. This ear for melody is also on point and the album has a proper lush, laid back vibe. Them Changes is the one everyone knows, but Bus In These Streets, Tron Song II, Tokyo, Lava Lamp, Friend Zone, all great. It's a bit silly (which I find is part of the charm) which may put some off, but yeah, lovely album.

This was a fun listen. Thundercats is obviously a beast on the bass and I enjoyed hearing random guest shots from Michael McDonald and Kendrick Lamar. I dig Thundercats goofy sense of humor. My only real issue is some of the tracks were really undercooked, especially the shorter ones. Probably would be a great album to get stoned to if I did that kind of thing.

Otrolig basist och precis rätt nivå av jazzigt

Överlag väldigt behaglig lyssning, väldigt enkelt att ha på i bakgrunden även om inget stack ut nämnvärt. Väldigt intressant upplägg på albumet!

The album had this weird hazy psych feeling, sort of the same feeling you get listening to Flower Boy by Tyler the Creator. It is bright, yet there's something kind of uneasy going on in the background. 4/5 (could go higher in the future)

Really nice discovery, I like this loads.

Fun, loose, funky mix of Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic and some Yacht rock

My reaction to seeing this was my album of the day: YOOOOOOOOOOOO HAHAHHAHAHAHA Dude what a pleasant fuckin surprise that this list goes up to albums this recent!!! I absolutely loved this album in college when it came out. Thundercat is an absolute master of his craft. His bass playing is mind melting and his range is incredible. Like tell me how he can go from contributing to one of the greatest albums ever in TPAB to fuckin meowing and singing about he wishes he was cat. Thundercat I love you and wow I’m so excited that this list has relatively recent albums! Now that I know this though, if TPAB or Blonde aren’t on here ima be pissed.

Excellent album cover. No notes. This is a modern jazz fever dream if I've ever heard one. This is absolutely not for background listening. Don't put this on at a party or while filing your taxes. Nothing about this makes sense. Absolutely nothing. The tracks flow from one to the next, and within each one is a series of "tasty"(?) chords that change so rapidly it's nigh impossible to keep up. There's also a clear lo-fi influence, present on most tracks but especially on Jethro and Drunk but really it's present in every track. Interesting time signatures are thrown into the mix (Blackkk) to keep you on your toes and prevent any foot-tappery. I guess Captain Stupido is technically the first main track ("Beat your meat, go to sleep") but at 101 seconds long there's little room to breathe. Uh Uh is a great bebop-inspired instrumental, reminiscent of standards like Donna Lee and Contusion. The bass remains the most impressive instrument here, though the piano, drums, and vocals are all strong in their own right. A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II) is a song about wanting to be a cat, and I get it, I really do. But I take my music very seriously, and lyrically, this ain't up to my standards. Walk On By stands out for its heavy use of 8-bit noises and for featuring Kendrick Lamar (yet outshining most of his solo music). The following song, Tokyo, definitely outshines it, since it's essentially the same but without an unnecessary rap interlude. The most convincing track is also Thundercat's biggest hit, Them Changes, which is very different from the rock/blues title of the same name but still pretty darn great. The worst track is an easy pick, too. It's Drink Dat. A pretty standard, forgettable track, but made infinitely worse by Wiz Khalifa's forced-hip rapping style. I liked every single other track, though, and there are 23 in total. So a solid showing. Even the interludes have something jazzy to add to the mix. 4/5 Key tracks: Uh Uh, Them Changes, Inferno

Never heard of this artist, nor this musical style. Enjoyed it very much. Reminded me a bit of frank ocean which I also discovered off this list

I sincerely hope that if I ever enter the music industry that I will make music with this much flair, humor, irreverence, snark, and style

I've liked this album since it came out. Hard to believe it's been 8 years. I had never been so interested in bass guitar before finding Thundercat. What a weirdo. I love it.

Groovy and fun

I didn't love it, but this felt like a much more intimate look at a songwriter's process than most albums. I'm also a cat dad, I loved A Fan's Mail (Tron Suite Song II). I feel like this deserves the 4 stars.

4.5 stars. Bass-playing virtuoso creates a wonderful genre-melding journey: funk, jazz, R&B, soft-rock, soul but carries consistent theme and story the whole way. Great balance of not repeating the same track over and over but keeping consistent groove throughout. Head-bobbing. Featured artists fit in well, with the exception of Wiz Khalifa though even his contribution wasn't totally out of place. Ending tracks really beautiful, bring in some orchestral/string sounds and slow things down. Standout the ultra-catchy bassline "Them Changes". "Jethro" is also really good, synth-heavy take on R&B.

Wonderfully weird, offbeat amusing and skewily humorous. Michael McDonald sounds right at home here (and fully deserves the intro shout), which speaks to both the timeliness and timeless aspects of this record. There's a similarly intriguing tension between the darkness of the lyrics and the lightness of the delivery – one likes a little ebulience mixed in with his despair (musically speaking). The density of creative ideas makes this a memorable listen overall, and not just a pleasurable one, though it's certainly that. Like a fun bender with a strange friend best taken in doses, though there's no doubt his heart is in the right place and sense of the groovy super well-honed.

A bit repetitive with the jazz fusion but it's great stuff

The fact that the album was classified as hip-hop and the relatively recent release date of the album initially put me off quite a bit. I actually only wanted to listen to it briefly to confirm my negative suspicions. But then I listened to the album all the way through. It didn't live up to my low expectations and I really enjoyed it. I had no idea that such good soul and funk music was still being made today. 4/5

Smooth but also kind of weird. Easy to lie down and chill with this album.

listened to again certified hood classic

Amazing album. Aural delight.

This is mad chill.

He’s my friend I also like anime 👍

Jazzy, mellow and weird (in a good way).

Playful vibes with intoxicating grooves. For dancing, walking or the bedroom (alone or with company). Like a tipsy dream. 4/5

I went in having no idea as what to expect. I got just that. Mix of styles - jazz, soft rock, funk, that grew on me. I need more time with this one to “rate” it.

I'm a sucker for great bass playing. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

I feel weird.

It’s always possible to tell when someone is having a good time putting an album together, and in Thundercat’s case the fun is infectious. The music is bouncy and funky, even if it does sound like the soundtrack to a Super Mario Galaxy game in places. The last case is a real possibility because it turns out that our Mr Thundercat is something of a nerd. He dedicates one track to his cat Tron and another about how much he likes being in Tokyo visiting Gundam cafes and spending all his money on anime. He also worries about posting every single thought on Twitter. He does touch on some more traditional lyrical topics but even when he’s getting inadvisably drunk it’s on Bombay Sapphire gin. Nerd-tastic!

Very fun soundscape that I found myself really enjoying, 9/10, one of my favorite listens yet.

I liked this a lot, especially the start of the record. It felt very much of the future, a wild mix of musical styles served with verve.

'I feel weird.' Definitely weird, Drunk is a splattering of 23 relatively short tracks, all of them virtuosic in one way or another, some speaking to some sort of relevance, others sheerly odd and abstract. A playful lyric: 'Thank God for technology 'cause where would we be / If we couldn't tweet our thoughts.' Objectively, while impressive, it's not as profound as it tends to make itself out to be, and it goes to show that Thundercat is an inventive bassist but not necessarily a resourceful songwriter. With that said, it has a sound that's undeniably nostalgic for me - a drift of alternative funk and R&B that artists like Vulfpeck and Frank Ocean also exemplified. We even covered 'Them Changes' in college. I'm thus liable to overrate it. Oh well.

I've liked some of these tracks for a long time, and have seen Thundercat live. I don't remember actually working all the way through this start to finish before. There's some great tracks but I don't think it's more than a collection of good tracks. I could have played it on shuffle and got the same thing from it.

Technically masterful, unashamedly quirky

Very interesting to listen to! I love the funk vibe. I bet it would grow on me if I listened to it a few more times. 3.5/5

Some quality tracks and grooves and maybe some lesser once but it's an album that deserves a few more listens to find what works for you.

I like Thundercat a lot and have listened to this album a few times before. He’s a great bass player and very cool. It’s a bit samey though.

There are some interesting things happening in Contemporary Jazz-Fusion lately. Thundercat is at the top of the genre and he's bringing some friends along. Badbadnotgood, Domi & JD Beck, Sungazer, and Robert Glasper are all in a similar orbit. It's certainly not for everyone, but the guest musicians and vocalists widen the appeal. This album has some great variety and the musicianship is top-notch. I tended to tune out when the music dipped its toe into the Frank Zappa pool, but overall it's a fun listen.

Solid project!

Thick, gooey bass grooves. A fantastic and fun listen. The foot never comes of the gas pedal. Sick collaborations and just silky funky, soulful, jazzy sounds from beginning to end.

Yeah the album is good. The production is enjoyable i don't think i disliked any of the production choices really. Bass line is always killer in all the songs. Although some songs have similar notes with each other i think and makes the album overstay its welcome at its tail end. But i think at the time of listening they are different enough to still be enjoyable and not be stall. Scratches that itch of my ADHD brain going every which way with songs like "inferno". I think the lyrics need some work lol. Find the references to games endearing albeit forced sometimes. Some unflattering lyrics here and there. Have a knee jerk reaction to any songs alluding to the "friendzone" because of the type of guys that usual complain about it. And the lyrics for that song have confirm my suspicions lol. Also "Tokyo" with references of getting a girl pregnant by being psychotic and the suicide forest. I am open that the artist is playing a character and at least the lyrics do stand out lol. Luckily, the unsavory lyrics is paired with the best production in the album so not too mad lol. Overall, despite the lyrics not being that great it just a nice album to sit back to, enjoy the production choices and just wind down a little bit with anime/gaming references lol. 4 out of 5 stars

Pretty good sonically, pretty odd lyrically

Really different from anything else I’ve heard. Unfortunately it’s never different from itself.

Really enjoyed this!

What a fun album, I've heard of Thundercat but never really gave him a listen. Lots of great guests and some really whimsical stuff. I think it might be a little too smooth jazz for my taste but it's definitely a great album. The Kenny Loggins/Michael McDonald collab really fits into this album well.

Likes his complicated chords a bit too much, and too smooth for my taste but nevertheless brilliant. I prefer Louis Cole tho 3.9

Funky find

Madcap fun

Ridiculously talented musicianship throughout. Whilst there's a tendency for this kind of thing to err towards muzak, there's something here which keeps it honest. The injection of lo-fi sounds, particularly reminiscent of Nujabes at times, is very welcome.. Funky as all hell.

I've known about Thundercat for a while but I've never checked out any of his projects. Them Changes is a basic choice but it's still probably my favorite song off the album, I've known about that song way before I listened to the album though. The listening experience as a whole was nice; most of the songs had a nice groove to them.

All kinds of fusion: hip hop, jazz, soul and he has some cool bass sounds

I know Them Changes and that's about it - I loved Thundercat's playing on Mac Miller's Tiny Desk Concert so I'm excited to hear him in action on an album. Off to a ripping start with Captain Stupido. Lots of bass chords and funky textures. Uh Uh very jazzy. I don't know how he is playing like this. It's like Funkadelic on speed. This record is kind of jazz-funk meets yacht rock so far. Lots of wah on the bass and envelope filters for that synthy feel. A Fan's Mail - my friend said "it's verging into 'need to be high for this' territory". It may in fact be that kind of album. I feel like Thundercat has been all over other artist's stuff to the point I have trouble separating it a bit. The shorter songs are reminding me of extended Kendrick interludes or something. He really has a great voice for hooks and I think the fuzzy headed feeling of the album works with the Drunk title. Drums are superb and there are a bunch of neat keys parts too. I really like Show You The Way, the yacht rock comes full circle with the guest vocals. Now Kendrick is here and it sounds very natural. Anddd we're back to jazz! Friend Zone is a bop for sure. Just classic Thundercat weirdness with super slick music. "...cause I got enough friends" goes hard. Them Changes is a modern bass classic. 10/10 for sure. Drink Dat is cool too. The 2nd half in general is much better to me. Overall I gotta say there is just a little too much jazzy bullshit (to me) to get the 5 star. Solid 4-4.5 with how good of a musician he is but without the features there are really only a few songs I truly enjoyed.

Not at all surprised this is polarizing but count me in the “love it” camp. Part Curtis Mayfield, part Andre 3000, part something entirely different. Not quite 5 stars but close and could grow there with time.

Really weird, really cool

This album is probably a 3.5 for me. I really like Thundercat, and there are at least a couple absolutely amazing songs on this album, such as "Them Changes" and "Show You the Way," but my problem with this album is that it is too much "the same" throughout most of it. There are not enough dynamics, different styles of singing, or variety in songs to not make it feel too long and a bit boring at times. That being said, it's still better than a lot of other stuff out there, and I think it deserves a 4 on this scale.

omg!!!! some songs i really really REALLY love like friend zone! like 10/10 a bop!! and then some songs i wanted them to end as soon as they started lmfaooooo but the songs i do like, i like so much this has to be a highly rated album. i really liked the groovy sound to it and sometimes the album reminded me of like old r&b or some of tyler's sound and i swear one song sounds like kamauu's mango i can't explain it!!! anyway this is my vibe 🙂‍↕️

No conocía a este señor. Pero me ha acompañado su fusión de una forma muy agradable

“Them Changes” is what hooked me years ago, so good to go back and listen to this whole album. Was nice to hear collaborations I didn’t know happened. Never heard bass forward jazz before, I’ll take it.

Funky and interesting

I'm familiar with Thundercat based on his work with other artists, but not his solo stuff directly. But holy hell, that bass playing is smooth. The lyrics are all over the map, some of it is so silly, some of it is tight. Overall, it's a tight album.

Groovy! That was a pretty nice experience. I liked the classic Sonic SFX and contemporary slang terms in the lyrics - but it's really just an another pleasant, vibe-full album. Def worth listening to again c:

4 - fantastic modern funk hip hop

This one surprised me in a very good way. Tempted to offer 5 stars on this one, but I think that could only be justified with several re-listens. One of the stronger 4 star ratings I've given.

Delightful. There's something wry and sweet and naive about TC as a songwriter that keeps me hooked into the next line.

I was not expecting to love this album as much as I did. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I didn’t think it would be one of the most creative albums I’ve ever heard. The music is amazing and the lyrics pull off both humor and vulnerability extremely well, with all the features being great. My only complaint is that some songs can blend together a bit, but this was right on the border of being a 5. 4/5

Not what I expected from the album art. It's electronica, but definitely not danceable. This album invites you to sit down on a velvet couch and get comfortable with your existential dread. Just vibe with the songs. It's good and interesting, but I think I could have gone without listening to it. It makes you think. My Rating: 4/5

Love it or hate it, but I like bass and things that I can listen to in the background, so this works for me.

Very pleasant surprise

Good vibey album

Apart maar een lekkere jam

The way this man plays the bass is god teir. This was an amazing example of artistry alive in music today. This deserves more admiration by the public. Glad I got to hear it

I forgot how humerous it is throughout while kinda getting serious at the end Fav tracks: lava lamp, walk on by,show me the way, tokyo and of course them changes

Wiz Khalifa song is a fat dookie on an otherwise great record. Largely no-skip. Thundercat isn't afraid to throw in some humor. Thought the second track placement was a little odd. I can definitely see myself coming back to this album.

I never heard of Thundercat before the HBO Yacht Rock documentary. I was expecting something more Yacht Rocky based on that, but this is pretty good. Bass playing is off the hook. Vocals are weirder than I was expecting. Loggins and MacDonald are gold.

Max said he really liked it.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Listened to a lot when it came out. Super catchy hooks

"Drunk" is the third studio album by American musician, singer, record producer, songwriter and bassist Thundercat (aka Stephen Lee Bruner). Funk, jazz hip hop, pop, psychedelia, R&B and soul are the Wiki-listed genres. Yes, the album covers or can slide into a number styles and that's what it's noted for. The album features guest musicians and singers including Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, Kamasi Washington and Louis Cole and was produced by Thundercat, Flying Lotus and Sounwave. Thundercat is lead vocalist, plays the bass and does the programming. A host of other musicians, vocalists and programmers also contribute. The album had very positive reviews and, commercially, it reached #37 in the UK and #50 on the US Billboard 200. "Rabbot Ho" opens the album. Thundercat's bass and high tenor voice. There's a piano. A short song referencing alcohol, drug use and partying. After several interesting songs comes the second single released "Bus in These Streets." Synth keys that sound like bells. Louis Cole on drums and synths in a song that sounds like a 60's pop song. A standard rock beat. The lyrics talk about disconnecting oneself from digital technology. Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins guest on "Show Your Way." Soft rock, heck, even yacht rock and why not? Layered vocals. This hits the spot. Overlayed, swirling synth keys and a ticking sound begin "Friend Zone." A hip hop and RB beat. Thundercat's funked-out bass and layered percussion. The first single "Them Changes" has an even more funked-out bass (even a wah-wah sound). The beat samples the Isley Brothers' Footsteps in the Dark." Kamasi Washinton on the sax. What else could you want? The album does cover a lot styles (jazz, funk, pop, yacht rock, soul and R&B) but the album has an overlying dreamy R&B and chill vibe. Thundercat has a soulful tenor voice and is an impressive bassist. The production is fairly detailed with the beats, bass and music in general providing an interesting listen. The songs are short which keeps things moving. For some reason, this album reminded me of Earth, Wind & Fire and it wasn't due to Sabrina Carpenter bringing them up on stage at Lollapalooza. Overall, it's a very good album and, if you're an R&B, pop or soul fan, you're sure to enjoy.

interesting album

Never heard of Thundercat. Allstar lineup of collaborators. This is a great funk/jazz/fusion/R&B album. Pitchfork: 8.5 Best Songs Uh Uh A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II) Show You The Way (w/ Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald) Walk On By (w/ Kendrick Lamar) Tokyo Friend Zone Them Changes Drink Dat (w/ Wiz Khalifa) 3AM

I'd never listened to Thundercat before so was going in with an open mind and a blank canvas. Some crazy jazz fusion, incredibly impressive bass, bizarre key changes (in a good way). I was at times bopping and then at other times i was confused. There's certainly a comedy element to the album which I enjoyed. Jovial. Playful. But also some serious playing. 7/10 Favourite songs - Lava Lamp, Show You the Way, Tokyo, Them Changes

Nice vibe to chill to, and really funny lyrics. Fave Song: Them Changes

The name fits the album very well. Was very good honestly, listend to it a few times. Favourite Song: Walk On By

Fun album. Definitely a little long and it drags a little in the second half but this still grooves. It's a limited list but this is a personal favorite of the 2010s.

The true Ace of Bass. 4.5

A nice change from all the 1970s alternative rock that dominates this list – something more recent for once. Not exactly my usual style, but I’d listen again. Perfect dinner-party flex: “Oh, you don’t know Thundercat? Let me put it on…” Standout track: hard to pick just one since it all flows together so fluidly, but I’d say “Show You The Way”.

I read a thread once that asked what music Frank Zappa would listen to if he were still alive, and the top answer was Thundercat. I think that's spot on. This album is groovy and weird and funky. "Them Changes" has one of the best basslines ever written. Some songs are short and do not feel fully fleshed out, but I think that adds to how off-kilter much of the album feels. I dig it.

I legitimately cannot decide if I hate this or love it. Regardless, I have listened to it five times to get a better idea, and have not gotten any closer to a decision. These are the kinds of albums people start cults around, and I may (or may not) be here for it.

This album could have been a masterpiece with better editing - got a bit too sonically repetitive as it wore on. That being said, it’s still a damn good album - his vocals are so smooth and the harmonies layered in perfect little petite fours of sound. A lot of Todd Rungren both in harmony and instrumentation. Loved this

Experimental and progressive tunes that meet somewhere in the middle of jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, R&B, and psychedelia…and does so quite well. The musical talent here is phenomenal, particularly the bass. Plus some tender vocal harmonies. For all of the virtuosity, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and isn’t afraid to be silly. While many songs are a fun listen, the songwriting skills don’t quite match the musical competence. But it does have a solid groove and a lot of creative ideas. Ultimately, it’s a fresh sound that scratches a unique itch but isn’t something I find myself reaching for regularly.

Very experimental, funk and jazz elements (basslines, vocal harmonies, jazzy pianos in Uh Uh). With synthy/electro elements. Some chord progressions remind me of Animals as Leaders, so quite unusual keys? Weird lyrics. Is quite draining to listen to the whole album Best track - Uh Uh, Lava Lamp, Them Changes, Where I'm Going 4 stars

Quite enjoyed the album, especially the cat song

Listened to this a few times before. But a great album, always fun and goes hard. Quriky Thundercat bass vibes.

dank ass bass - luis cole vibes . samples aplenty. did he coin all the phrases or he is referencing other things? "miss me with that nonsense"

23 musical ideas in 52 minutes. Thundercat is a walking brainstorm! Can’t wait to see him live at OSL. My favorites were Jethro, Show You the Way (featuring my favorite musical snack, Michael McDonald 😍), and Them Changes. Honorable mention to I Am Crazy for getting an entire vibe across in 26 seconds. This album was so fun. I also love the cover art: beautiful photography with great light.

Very vibey. A lot of the songs all hit the same tone, and the falsetto also gets a bit repetitive. Killer production though, and of course great bass work.

I fucking knew Louis Cole co-wrote "Bus In These Streets". I could hear that shit. Some of the songs were a bit whatever during the first half. But they really started to hit a spot as it went along. Especially from "Friend Zone" and on. "Them Changes" is a classic of course. And them changes really be hitting hard throughout the entire album... sorry

Loved it, so creative and fun

Another interesting listen. Way outside of my normal genre again but I can appreciate the quality of these tunes.

OK. Many things happening here. It was a great experience, not gonna deny it. Hip-hop jazz y hits here. Some good r&b. I love the sarcastic vibe and the idea of doing anything he wants to with the listener... I enjoyed the listen, yeah. Although it is true that in summer nights, the album hits different.

After peeking through in various doors and getting his foot in them, Thundercat burst through with this kaleidoscopic, diverse, occasionally weird, oft-times to the point jazz influenced funk exercise of Drunk and he passes with flying colors in his embrace of the vibes and times it was constructed in. Skits and full length songs clash and co-mingle in a way that diverts expectations of disasters, in large part due to the cohesive flow throughout. You can keep your head above water for this one, yet it is just as fine drowning in the eclecticism. Favorites: Rabbot Ho, Captain Stupido, Bus in These Streets, A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II), Show Me the Way, Walk On By, Blackkk, Tokyo, Them Changes, Drink Dat, 3 AM, Drunk.

This is enjoyably throwaway and silly, but with really excellent playing underpinning it. A fun summer album.

This is very fun, groovy and jazzy, while having some R&B beats and is pretty modern, even though it sounds a bit retro. Also it's not that serious which adds to the fun part. I liked it a lot.

Vibey! Funky rigs on bass, totally enjoyed. But not the best album of all times, not all songs hot hard.

Been exposed to Thundercat a little bit before this. I'm always down for any sort of funk. This album specifically is quite trippy and experimental, definitely taking some influence from psychedelia and mixing it into a pot of jazz & funk. Thundercat almost sounds like Michael McDonald on his vocal tracks, which is funny considering there is literally a track featuring Michael McDonald (and Kenny Loggins too!). Lyrics teeter from introspective to silly, somewhat matching the mood of the album. I always enjoy when Thundercat comes up on my playlists. Jazz fusion specifically has been something that I've been into recently, and you hear a lot of that influence here (and then some). This might not be for everyone though, and that's okay. 23 tracks is a lot to sit through after all.

Relaxing. Sounds like you are sitting in a great, fancy bar or restaurant.

Why haven't I heard of Thundercat? This is awesome!

Fun, bonkers, brilliant

This is an excellent album and paired well with the warm, sunny weather. Them Changes is an incredible song and one we didn't realise was on here, so that was a great surprise. Very smooth, sort of hip hop funky sound.

FAVO: Uh Uh, Show you the way, Walk on by, Tokyo, Friend Zone, Them Changes

V interesting

Like a fever dream of RnB, hip hop, jazz funk, soft rock and disco. Reminds me of Parliament/Funkadelic and mid-70s Mothers.

Nice chill album to have on in the evening, some tracks I've heard before, I enjoyed hearing them as part of a whole album.

E joyed the album. Good features. Some chill songs I quite enjoyed too. Overall pleasant experience 4/5

Man, I really have a good time with Thundercat. I wish Frank Zappa was around to collab. He feels like a less weird modern day version.

Very nice. Experimental but also relaxing? Happy to have been exposed.

This was a strange and wonderful mix of genres and artists

What wild fever-dream is this? I have never heard this album before and can't understand why I love it so much. This is wild and magical.

Virtuoso bass player Stephen Lee Bruner, aka Thundercat offers a particular kind of psychedelic jazz funk soul fusion with a lot of playful and arty elements to it. Amid the profusion of styles and influences it would be easy to miss the baroque humour, both lyrical and musical. Well worth a listen.

I love thundercat and yacht rock

Underrated. A really enjoyable, mellow listen. A consistent album in its sound maintaining a calm, musically versed sound throughout. Some big features on here too. A surprisingly good album, 8/10.

Late night while reading Just Kill Me. Home inspection the next day

Thundercat.

Interesting 😎

Fresh, exciting, bass heavy funk. A little overlong but so much fun.

Nobody moves!

Thundercat really killed it with this one !!! Incredible bass work, and whenever he uses synths, it also kills. Fun groovy album throughout this all!!

This album is incredible really glad to have heard it

A modern Bootsy Collins, if he was into hash and Lorazepam instead LSD and cocaine. Smooth, groovy and relaxed. A great time to unwind and dance to by yourself.

So groovy

on my birthday❤️❤️ ty music god

Немного не моё но имба

Ah good to see it in the list. I had this earmarked as a possible for my pick for the 1001 albums expansion list. Absolutely shouldn't have been removed from the book (and leaving the worst LCD album in its place?) One of those records that are best listened to of a piece, few tracks actually stand out, although some obviously do - Them Changes etc. Many tracks don't feel like full songs, although they are fleshed out ideas, hence why it makes more sense to listen to the whole record as one. I've probably criticised bands like Of Montreal of this (and Dirty Projectors only this week) but fact is I do love the inventiveness and much of their work (though not the DPs). This is a great album of soul, funk, jazz and ideas. Not a 5 star but definitely a record I regularly return to. Also he brought Kenny Loggins in from the Danger Zone!!

Very fine!

Interesting listen and clearly talented

Thundercat slaps the bass hard and writes some funny/clever lyrics in this one. I liked this album overall, but don't think I'd go back and listen to a lot of the songs on here. Them Changes is forever a bop, though.

I unexpectedly liked this. I wasn't expecting to based on the description, but the songs were nicely paced, and the lyrics were entertaining. Saw a review comparing this to the YouTube video "A Brief History of Japan" and honestly that is spot-on as far as overall vibes go.

Just a very fun album. I would say the first 15 songs are all pretty enjoyable, though only a few standouts until the fantastic Them Changes. Last few tracks kinda fall off for me which is a shame, could've been closer to a 5 without them. 4/5

Очень приятный исполнитель со смесью жанров, до этого не слышал его

The album is, while a little longer than most, not actually that long. Just over fifty minutes is a respectable time for a record. The length issue is that of the number of tracks. You’re cramming (yes cramming) 23 songs onto an album that doesn’t reach an hour and it feels bloated. Expand your stronger songs. Expand “Uh Uh”. Expand “Jethro”. Get rid of “Rabbot Ho”, “Day & Night”, and “I Am Crazy”. It made everything feel a little directionless, which, maybe, is what he’s going for. He does a very good job of the avant-garde singing style and songwriting in a way that feels sporadic and can also satisfy the basic needs. There’s nothing annoying here. In fact, all songs are good. Some could have been better. I enjoyed this very much, though. Phun, phun, phun. 4/5

So much fun. Def want to listen more times to pick faves. 4.5

Lekker man

I'm not sure how to take this album. Is it serious? Is it satire? Not that either is bad. But I get a Ween vibe from this record. Where every other song is serious, and then the others are goofy. But all done well. It's like R&B hip hop Ween. I actually enjoyed this record. Not that it's my favorite or its ground breaking, but this is the type of record that deserves to be on this list. It's doing something different. Production is pretty good. The flaw in this record is that it's under an hour and has 25 songs on it... And it does fele like an eternity. A lot of the songs sound the same. Sooo, it's nice when there are little switch up's in the song directions every odd song. Could triplm the fat.

Cool vibes jazzy

Thundercat is so weird and awesome. Nothing else to really say apart from damn those are some real bass skills.

Wild, weird, colorful, and creative. A great mix of psychedelia, soul, jazz, and hip-hop. Best song: Inferno

I really like the feel and vibe of Thundercat--including how a lot of the songs are relatively quick. The album also flows really well. Would be a 3.5 for me, but bumping for the sick bass he plays.

Thundercat doing what he does best in a fun manner. I hate that this mid-2010's hip-hop/soul/jazz fusion is starting to fade away.

Really cool

This bass-wizard Thundercat made a funky space-trip. Soul-searching grooves to trap-funk magic.

Pleasant surprise to see this in here. A bit over the top on the bass sometimes, but some magic moments.

leans very heavily on a Frank Zappa vibe at the start ( in fact I thought it was a Frank sample first go round), which is not necessarily a bad thing. I like that it weaves about across genres and style and I will certainly be looking out more of his work.

So fucking clean! This album is a masterpiece of tight grooves. It's one of those albums that you KNOW is good, even if you don't love every song. I will admit, I wish it were maybe 10 percent more "normal." IE the music itself is a little too eccentric and unpredictable for me at times. But still, can't knock it.

Sexy music made by nerds for nerds. I loved this when it came out; I love it now. It's so funky and smooth. Thundercat is a phenomenal bass player. The combination of jazz, r and b, and hip-hop just hits a sweet spot for me. He's undoubtedly a weird dude, but it feels like more of a genuine weirdness. This is who he is, living his best life. This is as opposed to Zappa, who used weirdness to provoke in a way that felt disingenuous. Also, Michael McDonald? That's a killer guest spot.

already listened to it. my favourite thundercat album and very underrated

cool album and definitely unique. thundercat's bass playing is, of course, the highlight here. it's fun and funky and he is showing off a lot of his technical prowess here. a lot of the songs here are fun too, the highlights for me being, 'them changes,' and 'friend zone.' that being said, there's not really anything here that takes it from purely good to great. it's an interesting album and i don't think it ever gets boring, but it also doesn't blow me away either.

This is starting out delightfully strange. This is my jam. Loving the electro bebop.

This was a real hoot, to me. My friend called it “doom scrolling: the album”, in a bad way, but hey. Maybe there’s merit in making an obviously high effort artistic representation in an obviously low effort cultural phenomenon, even if it’s a negative one, huh???

It’s good if you ignore the lyrics

i’m not gonna lie this is fire sounds like bill wurtz sometimes miss that guy

Pre-listening thoughts: I just think of when Them Changes trended on tik tok and people couldn’t agree on what the song looked like Post/during listening thoughts: applause for the fart in the first full length song. I did have to listen to this twice because I made the mistake of listening to this at work on the speaker where I was distracted and there are lots of loud noises to drown the music out. This is such an interesting blend of genres. You’ve got soul, lofi, RnB, yacht rock, and jazz all kind of melded in this album. Not to mention the features. Crazy to have Michael McDonald and Kendrick Lamar on the same album. This was a great listen though. My only complaint is some of the songs kind of seep together just due to song length + the large quantity of songs on this album. 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Captain Stupido, Jethro, Show You the Way, Walk on By, Blackkk, Them Changes, Drink Dat Least fav tracks: Tokyo

This is pretty cool.

Very nice.

A wild ride across myriad genres. Fun and playful as well as pointed.

I thought it went a little bit too long, but I liked the energy.

idk why i was surprised that zack fox was involved with this. not only are they friends but the sillier track are so zack fox coded, they feel like they're written by him. thundercat is for sure one of the best bassist in recent memory and this album is a testament to that. stupid asl but still very enjoyable

Good name. Good tunes. Good vibe. Simpsons: No

I enjoyed the chilled vibes of this, yet I felt like it could have been more interesting than it was. Going be generous and give 4 stars.

I think I left my wallet in the club. I really like this, it’s different and a vibe and I can tell the guys enjoying himself. Really enjoyed Tokyo and the collabs with K Dot and Wiz Khalifa but the whole album was really fun. I was going to see Thundercat play a gig but couldn’t for some reason, would like to at some point after this.

Ad ora è da 3, ma prevedo che ai prossimi ascolti si alzerà, il sound mi affascina molto

How would I describe this? Surprising. Imagine if George Clinton, Keiichi Suzuki, "Hip" Tanaka, and Weather Report had a foursome while MGMT and Phoenix watched. My 2024 Spotify Wrapped is going to be so weird

Lovely instrumentation. The harmonies really helped to offset the silliness. Most songs are just so short.

I definitely know of thundercat and respect him very much. Never really listened to any of his music fully. This is good stuff.

Newly-minted Thundercat fan here. Three listens and it keeps getting better

д.. Лучшая песня - Them Changes.

I had to throw out Thundercat from a bar I worked at at SXSW 2023 for being way too drunk. Pissed as he was, he kept demanding me and asking me if I knew who he was. Of course I knew. So this album is 5* but it gets dinged by 1 because of that.

if you aren't familiar with the cultural phenomenon known as adult swim, this record's humor may be a bit lost on you, as much of it is quite implicitly coded in the trademark style adult swim shows are well-known for. like those shows, it embraces the brand of humor that is a bit crass, generally unserious, but hugely appealing due to its down-to-earth, pedestrian nature. thundercat's character is weird, not always likeable, and sometimes kind of repugnant. but he's clearly just a down-to-earth dude most of us wouldn't mind chilling with. the stories he tells and the tangents he shares paint familiar life situations most people have probably dealt with. despite the record's humorous nature, it doesn't compromise artistry for the sake of a joke. its instrumentation is incredibly creative, offering a bright palette of adventurous soul arrangements. it is a wild musical journey with thrilling highs and emotional lows. the record doesn't really let go of its energy, until it decides that enough is enough, and it's time to go to bed. it may be underwhelming to some, but to me it further adds to the authenticity of its humanity.

The first song was a bit of a mine bender, but after that extra nice

Love thunder cat and this was a lovely listen

8/10…neo soul / nu jazz 👂

Cringey lyrics but amazing sound quality

Really like the short track lengths. V jazzy v fusion. Pretty sure Them Changes came out before 2017 though…?

A subtle feat of musicianship that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's fun and funny and lush. There are a lot of tracks and the runtime made me nervous, but this flew by and kept me engaged. 3.5/5, but I'll round up because I'm trying to be a more positive person. Highlights: Captain Stupido, Lava Lamp, Walk On By, Jameel's Space Ride, Them Changes, Where I'm Going, Drink Dat

Beat your meat go to sleep. My favorite bible verse Sounds like if the super Mario bros had a weird cousin who made music, in a good way I think?? Like I get the appeal but I don’t necessarily like it. But wouldn’t bash it It’s its own kind of beautiful

fun funky reggie watts vibes. i only knew them changes and was hoping to find more songs that good but it’s the best one

This album was kinda dope. I digged it. Didn’t realize it was somewhat modern until near the end too.

so groovy. nostalgic but innovative. thundercat is one of the niche greats of our time

Great bass and some interesting and (intentionally) amusing artistic choices.

groovy, jazzy, funky, soul-y. Lovely stuff.

À la fois super composé et structuré, mais fluide et d'une belle unité. J'ai beaucoup aimé. J'aurais donné 4,5.

Jacob Collier style supratonal music and rhythms but poppy

po pire ! biz mais pas pire

Weird songs at the beginning. Very good melody on the album overall

This was pretty weird but also so awesome. I wouldn't say it was 'moving' in any way but it was a great listen. One in my listening group said this was kind of like 'black Zappa'

Really liked this album as a cohesive thing not so much for the individual tracks

Weird but good.

Great first half. Gets too long at the end.

Chad 4.5

I first encountered Thundercat in 2010 through his work on Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma, where his bass playing left a lasting impression on me. His standout performance continued to captivate me on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, prompting me to explore his solo work. I was once again blown away by his unique sound, which blends elements of Earth, Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, and J Dilla into something entirely new. Delving into his background revealed an impressive list of collaborations, from playing live with Erykah Badu to Suicidal Tendencies. His album Drunk is a testament to his brilliance. The lyrics, whether exploring quirky ways to navigate feeling weird or the coolness of being a cat, are playful yet introspective, addressing relationship struggles and feelings of being overlooked from a nerd's perspective. But the real highlight is his bass playing, inventive song structures, and that airy, soulful voice. It's a voice that could be described as a blend of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, with the latter two even featuring on the track “Show You The Way”—genius. Exploring the musicians associated with Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, and Thundercat led me down a fascinating rabbit hole. Brilliant artists like Mono/Poly, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Kamasi Washington, Deantoni Parks, Terrace Martin, and Robert Glasper all contribute to this unofficial collective, reminiscent of the Soulquarians of the late 90s and early 2000s. Ultimately, Drunk showcases Thundercat’s prowess as a solo artist, highlighting his exceptional talent beyond his role as a sought-after collaborator.

I have Them Changes on my trivia playlist, so I hear it a couple tines a week, but I haven't listened to this whole album. Right off the rip, it is funky. Should be a fun ride here. He's right up there with the best: Flea, Bootsy, Mono Neon, Joel Guerra, Les Claypool. I hear some KNOWER or Louis Cole in here. I love the Kendrick cameo. Groovy album! Besides Them Changes, I liked Inferno. DUI was a cool ending.

I wish I liked it a little bit better but still a 3.6+ for production and musicianship

I love Thundercat's vibe this is a really cool album. Somebody at the bar at my 40th birthday party kareokoed "Them Changes" - and I was like, dang, i didn't realize that's where we were with Thundercat, but now here we are - one of the greatest albums of all time, and it feels right.

Yeah clearly pretty great. Michael McDonald was a great surprised. Enjoyable, great cameos, great vibe, great bit long low 4? i think so

ganz cool aber paar tracks hätt man streichen können

A+ album cover and title. Fun and bizarre album from a crazy bass player.

It has rhythm, it has poetry, it is fun, it is original, and it is unique.

Thundercat's an interesting dude. Long term Suicidal Tendencies bassist pivots to a funk career with Stevie Wonder, P-Funk, and Michael Jackson influences. It's an absolutely great record, and I'd love to meet anyone who says different and ask them why. Favorite tracks: "Them Changes", "Lava Lamp"

I'm not a fan of the smooth jazz vibes, but loved the fusion and funk parts. It was a mixed bag from loving it to being turned off. I wouldn't have guessed this was from 2017, it has such a strong late 70s early 80s vibe. Would have been a 3 but bumping to 4 for production quality and the perfection of what they were trying to do, even if it wasn't my bag.

kinda psyched for this one, I enjoyed Thundercat's other solo album, It Is What It Is, as well as pretty much any song I've heard him guest on ("Wesley's Theory", "Cracker Island") Kendrick jump scare on "Walk On By" edit: 2nd Kendrick jump scare in "Friend Zone" ("Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe") I can't say why Dimery & co. put it on the 2018 version of the book, since it was removed by the time I got the 2021 version. It's both a maelstrom of genres & virtuosic compositions, as well as a a mess of ditties about Mortal Kombat, being a cat, & substance abuse (hence the title). If that doesn't sound good to you idk what to tell you bud yacht rock • astral jazz HL: "Them Changes", "Uh Uh", "Lava Lamp", "Friend Zone", "Drink Dat", "Inferno" July 9th, 2024

Right as I was getting obsessed with Them Changes...

This is exactly why I’m 560+ albums in on this list. I have been missing out on Thundercat and I’m glad I won’t be anymore. This album starts off hilarious and weird and then really slips into a groove. I love the sorta there background singing. Friend Zone is beautiful but still irrelevant and hilarious. One album into my Thundercat experience and I’m sold.

It’s funky and I like it. I especially like the song where Thundercat suggests life would be better being a cat and spends a decent amount of time in the song meowing.

Pretty good.

Still as flabergasted by Drunk as I was when it was released. Mental album.

Very chill, cohesive album. I went in with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I probably won't listen to the entire album again, but it was a nice ride this evening while eating cheese and reading my sci-fi book.

Love it.

Fantastic. From the vocals to the beats, I’m not sure if I’d get sick of soul-like music coming out since a majority of the time, they’re great. 3.5

oh i love how this album went everywhere and anywhere. i never expected the album to go the places it did. in fact, drunk doesn't even sound like it was released in 2017. "show you the way" featuring both michael mcdonald and kenny loggins brings a seventies vibe because of yacht rock but also the chill r&b and funk energy adds to the feel of the seventies. the variety of genres and musicians adds to how unusual this album is. the creativity is everywhere, yes, but also drunk provides the listener with a smooth listen. i wasn't expecting to enjoy this so much, especially considering i simply had to listen to this album four times before i could write a review, but i really left this album in awe of thundercat. what a great choice.

Loved it. Not used to the jazzyness but was really enjoyable overall. A Fan's Mail was my fave track on it. 4/4.5

Very very chill

Amazingly all over the place.

Weird but groovy

The musician known as Thundercat is an extremely eclectic, charismatic and entertaining funkematician. His music is silly, creative, playful and downright relatable. He’s always a fun listen and a great live performer if you get the chance. Listening to this record while riding my bike and caught someone singing along to “Friend Zone” as I rode by. That’s part of the power and understanding that Thundercat has broadcast to the world. Absolutely solid record.

Lots of funky base and the kind of weird stuff I like. Definitely made me curious about his collabs and other projects.

Them Changes is great and already in my playlist. The album is good, o think it’s a little long, but definitely worth being on the list!

I'm your biggest fan, but I guess that's just not good enough Is it 'cause I wear my hair in or because I like to play Diablo Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking 'bout Cause I really don't wanna have to spell it out And next time you call me I'm gon sit and stare at the screen Waiting for the call to end You stuck me in the friendzone That's that bullshit I'm gonna play Diablo either way You can go or you can go Because I'd rather play Mortal Kombat anyway, hey I want a love like Johnny Cage If you're not bringing bottles I suggest you start to walk away Bitch don't kill my vibe I can tell you've kinda got uncomfortable So let me break it down for you Don't call me, don't text me, after 2am Unless you plan on giving me some Cause I got enough friends I will throw you in the garbage Cause you play too many games I'm better off by myself Loving you's bad for my health No one wants to be in the Friendzone This initially sounds like some vanilla R&B but when you listen to it closely it turns out its brilliant. 4/5

Back when I was just beginning my journey in widening my music taste and listening to new stuff, some of the songs on this album were some of the first few things that served as the stepping stone for me. I remember listening to Walk On By, Friend Zone and Them Changes until I had exhausted them so much I couldnt listen to any of them anymore but it definitely got me more accustomed to listening to jazz. I'm glad I didnt listen to the entire album back then because I probably wouldnt have liked like I do now, now that my tastes have changed and matured a bit more My new favourite song on the album is A Fan's Mail

I really liked this. Had no idea what to expect. And yes, we all want to be cats.

This time listening to Thundercat, definitely someone to tune in to. Felt like a Zappa and Brian Wilson collab, with some soul thrown in. Some great moments on this album, but at times a bit too ponderous for my liking. Could have had a few songs trimmed to make near perfect.

Yacht rock spun in a blender with modern soul, hip-hop, and jazz. Thundercat is immensely talented but too stoned to take himself too seriously. Obviously polarizing, based on the scores other listeners have given it. Much like Steely Dan. IYKYK.

This is so weird and great, definitely keep in rotation

I've wanted to listen to this album for a while, and I'm glad I finally did. Thunder at is such a funky guy, and it's great to hear all these beats and his gentle vocals and his funny bars. It's a nice surprise throughout the album to hear all the features included. I would say this album does feel a little long, as I was waiting for the single "Them Changes" throughout the first half of the album, and once it came, there was so much more of the album left. The last few songs I didn't feel like progressed the ideas in the album much more. Still a very enjoyable listen.

some lyrics are immature

This was goofy and weird but still super engaging. I loved the wandering melodies and at times irreverent lyrics

Now this is the good shit. Being an old head, I am now being exposed to actual modern shit and it gives me hope. Because this is just downright righteous. Play on, player. I like this a ton.

Honestly better than I expected, but sounds exactly like what my friend who knew of him would listen to.

okay uh its good but his first record which was a self titled iirc was better, also if you dont wanna listen to the full record listen to THEM CHANGES cuz its imo THE Thundercat track

Thundercat’s expertise in hip hop production is in full force here, despite this album being largely a tribute to old school jazz as well as the jazz fusion of Miles Davis. Even the album artwork seems to have Thundercat’s upper half of his face mimic Miles Davis’ hair and angry demeanor from that era. But contrary to the photo, this album is just so fun. It’s playfully bizarre without being so bizarre that it ever gets anywhere close to being difficult to listen to. It’s great background music for chilling out or partying, and it’s also great music to vibe to without any other distractions. Great album all around.

Very good. He’s got some great beats. I think he’s missing a lead singer or hero track.

Never heard of him. I can see why some reviews have referred to this is as background music, but being pleasant to listen to isn't a knock. I am curious but not dying to listen to his other stuff.

Best Song: Uh Uh. Pure funky fun. Worst Song: The Turn Down. Just a bit of a boring track sitting at the end. I expected more from Pharrell. Overall: A fun album that seemingly goes all over the place while managing to retain its core funky groove. It does drop off a bit in quality in the latter half, but it's still a good time regardless.

Great beats

4 stars

A really fun album not afraid of being too blunt, nor too modern. It doesn't try to wax poetic, rather being blunt with things like anime, video games, and other "silly" things that may feel out of place in a soul album, but the record as a whole stands out more because of this. It helps that Thundercat isn't just throwing these things around, but rather using them in a way that feels just right for the tone at hand. Sometimes it can feel a tad internet-brained, in which I'd rather look for an artist like Jack Stauber to fill that void, but when it hits, it can be relatively dreamy more than anything. My only main flaw is its length versus its variety. Every song here is at least good, but tracks can blend together very easily, especially at the amount of them here, and it could've easily been trimmed down as a result, but otherwise this is a great time with some sleepy yet funky jams to get you rocking out in any mood. Quite enjoyed this, I feel only a record like this could pull Kenny Loggins and Kendrick Lamar back to back and do it well.

Super fun album with a number of 5/5 songs. Loved the different vibes and speeds. Super talented musician having a lot of fun.

What the actual fuck is this album and why do I love it so much??

A little up and down at times, but overall a good album to listen to on a rainy Saturday. Funky sounds and fun collaborations make it worth the listen.

Never heard of this one before I played it. A few singles, still rang no bells. Didn't hate it. didn't love it.

Them Changes Show you the way Friend Zone The turn down

I FREAKING LOVE THUNDERCAT'S VOICE AND BASSLINES! He's like the "suave Flea", a melodic and smooth bass virtuoso.

Ei ollut sitä mitä odotin, odotin hiphoppia. Aika jännää jotain Future Jazzia. Tulee vähän joku youtube videoesseen taustamusiikki myös mieleen. Parhaat: Tokyo, Jameel's Space Ride, Friend Zone, Them Changes, Where I'm Going.

its so fuckin good

I was surprised to see this album pop up, and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it overall. I had heard some of Thundercat's solo work, mostly songs from this album, and wasn't sure it was my speed despite generally admiring his playing and his contributions to other albums I love. It is still weird, but I loved a lot of the production on this album, and the driving bass lines had me hooked. There are a lot of songs, but the diversity of sounds is part of what makes this work as an entire project in my eyes. 8/10. Favorite Songs: Uh Uh, Jethro, Walk On By, Friend Zone, Them Changes Least Favorite Songs: Where I'm Going, Drink Dat

Wild sounds wildly paced Smoothly bold yet erratic Blotto R&B

Soul from the 80ies - made in the last decade.

Beautiful post millennium psychedelic hip hop - and that bass guitar playing phwwoooo. There’s a lot to dig in through the hundreds of layers of this album

Weird, but kind of fun!
