Reviews (page 2 of 8)
Allseits beliebter Könner seines Fachs jedoch bleibt mir recht unerklärlich, warum diese Palette an doodles ein eigenes Album benötigt. Verwunderte 1.3
Mellow, electro trippy. It is a vibe
I wanted to listen to this for a while now, so I’m glad I finally had the opportunity. What an album!
More artists need the courage and freedom to be themselves! Thundercat takes advantage of that and isn’t afraid to make short songs that are a joke. Or make longer songs that are a joke.
The cumulation of his works into the bass master craft.
Fun to see a Thundercat album on here. Have to love and respect someone making bass guitar focused music and keeping it weird. There’s some superb collaborations on this album, and I really like the airy, 8-bit feel to a lot of the songs. Yeah, this is a favourite of mine.
Me encantó, jamás escuchado, pero ahora lo quiero
Que cambio a mis gustos habituales además suena muy muy bien.
I fucking love this album. It's so funky and groovy and goofy.
Listen close, cause this album slaps harder than a pancake on a Sunday morning. Basslines so funky, they make James Brown roll over in his grave.. Vocals that'll make you question your own singing abilities (don't worry, it happens to the best of us). It's an album that demands your attention and rewards your ears. Now pass the aux cord, I need a turn. Playlist Additions - Uh Uh - A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II) - Show You the Way - Walk on By - Them Changes
This is weird as hell. A staggering act of musical contortion, both in terms of Thundercat's technical fireworks and the bizarre movements among chords and keys and times. But if works, somehow. It's not quite as effective, but the first thing that came to mind when I started this up was Coltrane's Giant Steps. This is probably much more appealing to jazzheads and critics than your average pop listener. The thing is, it's not even *that* challenging, mostly. When people call Kanye a genius, I think that's a disservice to people who can do things like this. Sometimes chill ('A Fan's Mail'), sometimes a full-on, simulated panic attack ('Uh Uh'). Never boring, always inventive, always impressive. 5/5 what a trip. I've never heard anything that's really like this.
Ahhh I loved this album and listened to it a bunch before 1001 albums!
good
uh uh
Faves: A Fan’s Mail Jethro Show you the way Them changes Drink dat
I was very into this album - it was long, but it was really good from start to finish.
Kendrick's bass player, awesome. Some tasty licks and the songwriting is kinda funny and raw.
Buenardo
The grooooooooove
A wacky mix of impressive instrumentation & zany lyrics. Dude seems like a blast to hangout with.
foda
i have heard the album before is a 5 out 5 for me
I have no idea why, but I love this.
Starts off very strange but settles into a very chill album once you get used to the vibe of it.
Somehow, Id never heard of this Its going into heavy rotation.
Fun, funky, fabulous
Love the funky beats
funky
Insane
Yea this album was so fucking good to listen to. I’m so happy to finally have an album from the 2010s again. I missed this when it originally dropped in 2017 (A phenomenal year for music by the way. Thundercat is one of those artists that recreated a classic sound but modernized it and made it his own. Phenomenal listen and a refreshing relief from the standard 70s rock albums this list is full of.
This was incredible. I love the fusion of jazz, hip hop, and R&B, and needless to say the musicianship is outstanding. But I also love the concept. Just the feeling of being zoned out and honest and abrasive and letting all the emotions flow because there’s no inhibitions. The inner monologues, the outbursts, the yearning, this really runs the gamut. It’s so interesting to hear from this perspective, where all the emotions and opinions are just truthful and raw because there are no inhibitions.
Triple blind, and this is exactly why I’m doing this challenge. This album was cool. It was fun but also musically interesting. Will be deep diving this guys discography
Exceptional album. The creativity knows no bounds! Love the mix of sounds and genres he uses. A truly skilled musician and artist.
Great album I have listened to before and it still is good

This kind of album is perfect to me and that's just the way it is
He sentido como mis oidos se sentian bendecidos por el mismisimo dios
Is this one of the most controversial albums on this list? I absolutely loved it but those are a lot of 1 star reviews. I don't know of anyone else putting together music like this today. Unique in the best possible way.
I really liked the vibe of this album. Childish Gambino and Frank Ocean vibes
Maybe I just needed some lo-fi funky soul today but that hit just right.
After 900+ albums, this feels like the most welcome form of culture shock. It seems to come out of absolutely nowhere with its fresh ideas and sounds. Fantastic stuff.
First Listen; 4.5; This is my favorite completely new artist and album from this project. Never heard of this artist before, but this music was interesting and fun. The songs reminded me of a lot of different bands, and the opening track and a few others reminded me of some Beach Boys songs: short, whimsical, falsetto singing. Others reminded me of the vibe of Kendrick Lamar, and sure enough he was on one of the tracks as well. Other parts sounded influenced by music from Sega or other video games. Favorite Track: Them Changes I really like the off-the-wall lyrics and catchy hooks and beats. To me this is the perfect mix of technical proficiency with fun ideas. I've already listened to the album a couple times through and it's definitely one I'll come back to.
This is another rare instance of an album from an artist I’ve seen live! Super fun music. I’m teetering between 4 and 5 stars because the end of the album drags on a tiny bit, but this is great representation from the 2010s from a list that is otherwise lacking during that newer era.
it's reckless for all this talent to be in one place
Love it.
This was so good! Lyrics were funny at times and it was just a vibe.
Knew a couple songs off here, and already loved "Them Changes" but this whole album was great! Funky, groovy, jazzy, funny, and weird. "Captain Stupido" and "A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite III)" were my other faves.
Zany, catchy, and funny all at the same time. Most of all, this thing is a blast. Hard not to laugh out loud at some of the tracks here. Just an amazing jazz album.
Surprising Kendrick feature was awesome
Fuck. Yes. Thundercat fucking rules. I hope this turned some new people onto his music. I think he is a genius. Do yourself a favor and watch some video of him playing. If you’re not impressed by listening to the album, that should do it for you. Awesome choice.
I enjoyed this album, which had r'n'b, and even funk and disco at times!
Incredible album, quirked up and terminally online. But it's so groovy too!!
OMG - I knew Thundercat was good but I'm embarrassed that I haven't listened to this until now! Amazing
Thundercat’s the goat, Drunk; an incredible album.
probably my favorite album yet that we've had, i was a mild thundercat fan before this from features but it blew me away how much i liked this and how smooth i found it so it's going in my rotation immediately, hope you're prepared...
Cool and jazzy. Almost too cool for me.
This guy has a lot of talent. Uh Uh sounds like someone's been listening to Jaco. Which is not an easy feat to pull off. A little long but a solid listen overall.
YES! Amazing album by a musical genius. I listen to Thundercat maybe too much. But as a bass player, it's incredible to hear what he can do.
Cowards hear the bass on Uh Uh and declare this music is too weird and off putting despite that being the tightest shit I’ve ever heard.
ja, was leuk
THIS is one of my favourite albums of all time
Great
5.0/this album rocks, good vibes and chill grooves
- Every one of the folks on this project that panned this record, this is your assignment: Go back and - LISTEN - to this record. Put all of your pre-concieved notions, all of your musical baggage, OUT of your mind and listen to the music. This is absolutely one of thee best records released recently. It's forward looking while referencing the past, it's inventive, creativity at it's best. It draws from so many yet is not pastiche. Y'all need to clean out your ears. 10/10
J'adore, C'était dans les recommandations de Jacob Collier sur Spotify, je comprends pourquoi
What a nice surprise. Never heard of Thundercat before, and it is basically My Shit. Might went on a little longer than I wanted, but I still nodded my head and tapped my foot the entire hour.
He knew exactly what he was doing making this bedroom typa album 👀
There's not a bad song on this album. Maybe a song or two isn't fully fleshed out, but I love this shit, and I think it's his best album.
Loved it. A bizarre but coherent fusion of hip hop, funk, r&b, and jazz. Easy to get lost in the flow of this album. Had a chance to catch Thundercat at The Vogue awhile back, but I passed to watch the Game Of Thrones series finale. What a terrible decision that was 😔
What a pleasant surprise to see this on the list. So re-playable, so eclectic, so much fun. The bass is extraordinary but the other instruments are no slouch. 'Them Changes', 'Lava Lamp', 'Friend Zone', 'Uh Uh' are my favorites, but love pretty much all of this. If you enjoyed this at all, hop on YouTube and look for Thundercat's NPR Tiny Desk Concert. It's a fun listen/watch.
I’ve never heard of Thundercat before and I was blown away. It’s jazzy and funky and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
I really like this album. The bass instrumentals keeps you engaged and interested throughout the whole album. At first I disliked Thundercat's singing style but it gets better and actually good when you get used to it. This is an album that seems like you either love or hate.
this was truly great. i don’t think i can let myself give it below 5. truly incredible as a full work, and was able to get some hits out of it. the instrumentals are obviously the stand out here and are so damn good. i feel like it feels like a modern day combo of Zappa and Wonder. and it’s so fun too
Such a weird little gem. It’s like stream of conscious cool jazz. It’s a throwback tribute to the late 70s/early 80s liteFM sound. Calm, peaceful and trippy. Sometimes funny, sometimes intimate. And then he’ll just start meowing over some quiet storm r&b. It’s bizarre and wonderful. Nice to see this on the list. It’s a unique treat all the way through. This made me a fan.
I absolutely LOVE thundercat so when I got this album I was so happy, he's my favorite bassist hands down and this album is fantastic
A fantastic trippy R&B/hip hop experience. My favorite parts of Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp A Butterfly" were the bass tone and production, and this album is a full hour of that. Coupled with some very funny and memorable lyrics, this album is like organized chaos of samples and songs that are a blast to listen to
Sometimes you know an album will be 5 stars the moment you turn it on
Goku fucking ruined me
Favorite Track: Them Changes
I love this album enough to own the hard to open vinyl box. It's great with a variety of beats and lyrics. A lot of it is kind of funny and some of those songs are on my normal rotation playlist. For me this is a perfect album with every song being one that I really enjoy and can get into. It's very chilled out and not overbearing, I love it and will listen to it many more times.
An outstanding piece of work 2 eyes above the water lurk Jazz infused hip-hop beat Thundercat where those two meet Please don't jibe I love this vibe I loved it when it came out Love it even more now I'm devout
A classic. Funky and unfettered
Magic!
"I wanna be a cat (meow meow, meow meow)" - A Fan's Mail I'm honestly gonna give this album a 5/5. it hits all the marks: groovy, funky, feel good, goofy, and other ones too. it just makes me feel good, as well as the music sounding amazing by itself.
Thundercats is a god. This was actually one of my fav albums from 2017 so I'm pretty familiar with it already. So many absolute jams from this album.
That's a classic
Fantastic album. Great bass work.
Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOOOO!
The lyrics to "A Fan's Mail": Meow, meow Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow Meow, meow Meow I wish I had nine lives I bet it feels real nice Sitting in the sun Letting the rains wash over me No one watching over me I do what I want Everybody wants to be a cat It's cool to be a cat Everything the light touches It's where I would roam My roar would be so powerful I would scare off everything Cool to be a cat (meow, meow, meow, meow) Cool to be a cat (meow, meow, meow, meow) Cool to be a cat (meow, meow, meow, meow) Cool to be a cat Meow, meow Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow Meow, meow Meow, meow Meow, meow
Surprised to see this on the list but gives me hope about whoever is adding new entries to this list. This album is not by an iconic artist or does not have a flashy hit song but damn it's so good.
# Playlist track - Tokyo # Notes - I fully understand that this mix of Jazz, Hip Hop & Soul is not for everyone. It takes some time to kind of listen to all of the weird layers and references included in this thing. But boy, you'll be happy you did. - This took me a good 4 or 5 runs to get used to, and I enjoyed all of them. - Yeah. It's music for weird people. But I'm weird, so it works out.
Incredible never heard this before or even knew who this was. But it was an audible journey that I really enjoyed
jazzy chill and weird
I’m a little embarrassed to say that before today, my main exposure to Thundercat was either YouTube highlights of his bass lines, or his feature on Gorillaz’ latest album. Now I can say I’ve listened to an album in full, and can happily say it’s pretty great. It got very complex at times, teetering into jazz rather than the overall RnB/soul vibe which was very successful at keeping my attention. It also got my silly little parrot dancing, which is always a bonus in my eyes.
This is so weird, humourous, frenetic and, most of all, FUNKY! I love Thundercat's bass playing. I'll definitely be checking out more of his work. Liked Songs Added: Uh Uh Bus In These Streets A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II) Show You The Way Friend Zone Them Changes
Ooh wow. Always liked "Them Changes" and I remember trying this album out once while searching for something in The Home Depot. It didn't stick with me but I think I might've been too focused on the hardware shopping. Okay. This is the first legitimately "weird" album we've gotten. And I love it. One of the best bass players of his generation (Esperanza Spalding comes to mind) delivers an album that is uniquely him and is well worth the listen.
Modern classic. A beautiful fusion of hip hop and MOR. Possibly the greatest bassist ever. And nobody else could pull off having Kendrick and Kenny Loggins as guests on the same album. A modern classic.
a great album, the jazz/funk influence is apparent throughout. doesn’t take itself too seriously either. one of my personal favorites
Never heard of Thundercat but will definitely be diving in after this listen
i loved this
excellent, a definite hidden gem. I would like to listen some more, very original! would do 4.5
I wonder if anything will top the artist name/album title/cover art perfection here. And the music was actually pretty enjoyable! Wild card 5, I guess. I still don’t even get it. Well done, Thundercat. (ntm.)
Damn I really should've listened to this back when it came out, reminds of the Flying Lotus albums i used to love and listen to all the time. Huge bunch of quick songs with some wild jazz-fusion-y instrumentals. Vocals fit the vibe perfectly, all the features killed it. Just love the whole atmosphere of this thing.
Thundercats is a madman. His creativity is through the roof and his sound spectacular. I also happen to be a sucker for whatever Flying Lotus is involved with, so his presence is very much welcomed as well.
Start to finish, absolutely fantastic
This has got to be the most unique album I have encountered on this list so far. I think it does an incredible job of capturing a lot of musical currents of the time while coming up with something completely original. It is able to combine elements of EDM, post modern, rap, soul, R&B, and so many other ideas into a very comprehensive and complete album. I don't love every song of this album, and I think it even peters off for me towards the end, but the hits are so damn creative innovative that it feels like a crime not to give this one a five.
THIS ONE WAS INSANE loved the cat song meow meow. today is also the birthday of my lovely cats so purrfect! no but really liked this one, knew some songs before from tiktok and stuff but didn't know the person who was responsible for these BANGERS!
Eccentric, Super-smooth, groove-laden, funky-fresh. Love all the thick, muted bass work, the mix of midi loops and drums, and the suave keys. The falsetto singing just works, so tight and glassy, and the lyrics are witty and hilarious. Tracks are pretty short and to the point, which allows for a rapid shuffling of ideas before anything gets too stale. The featured artists are a real treat too, fit perfectly with the tone and feel of the album. Couldn’t take my stanky face off the whole record.
Really love this. I didn’t at first and to be honest initially thought there was a mistake in the database, but instead ran with the assumption that I’m fundamentally a square and needed to give it another spin with a more open mind and I’m glad I did. It’s groovy and moving, but light and fun too. Three cheers for Thundercat!
Lol, I thought that Uh Uh sounded like Sonic the Hedgehog power-up music. Imagine my surprise to actually hear a Sonic sample later on A very fun listen, mostly because of overall immaturity. Loved the lyrics on A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II), Thundercat is my neko. Loved the chill vibe throughout.
I really enjoyed it, his bass playing is so good
I was not vibing with this. Then he hits us with the Michael McDonald and Sonic the Hedgehog sample? The vibes are immaculate.
I have no notes, this album's amazing.
beat ur meat. go to sleep. I listen to songs from this project at least once a month. Thundercat and this project specifically did ALOT for me growing up. Saw him play this album live, shit was fucking INSANE.
one of my favorite albums ever. when i saw him live, i didn't really like his on-stage personality, but the music stands on its own
Is it hyperbole to call this a modern masterpiece? Probably. But I really like it a lot. To my ear the music is challenging and unexpected but the songs are engaging throughout. The performances are next level without any virtuoso wankery.
I really like the sound/sounds of this album. The bass is excellent in pretty much every song. The voice is nice and fits well with the feel of the songs. The beats are pretty sick, but I generally like faster paced songs. This album doesn’t have many of those at the start but gets some in the second half. Those pulled it through for me to giving it a better rating than I initially gave it. Overall a grooving album that deserves a spot on the list. Favorite track: Them Changes
I feel like I've been throwing out a lot of 5s lately, but Thundercat is one of my favorite bassists so I feel compelled to give a 5. Thundercat is a true professional at the game of not overstaying a welcome. The songs are all pretty short, but all have great basslines and comedic lyrics that would detract from how good the album sounds if it weren't for the personality that comes through. Anyways, I'll stop yapping and give you the highlights: 2, 5, 12, and 15. But you should listen to all of them. Fantastic album.
hell yes
Great album
Such a weird little gem. It’s like stream of conscious cool jazz. It’s a throwback tribute to the late 70s/early 80s liteFM sound. Calm, peaceful and trippy. Sometimes funny, sometimes intimate. And then he’ll just start meowing over some quiet storm r&b. It’s bizarre and wonderful. This bitch had the nerve to dig up Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. I love how unapologetically nerdy the whole thing is. There was probably a lot of mushrooms involved in the creative process. But the music is beautifully arranged and performed. The talent and skill are front and center. It’s really hard to make a project like this work so well. Respect. Nice to see this on the list. It’s a unique treat all the way through. This made me a fan.
Another one I've heard a bit of and wanted to dive more into. I gave this one a lot more time than most other albums. Unlike some others, this one had great sound BUT ALSO great songs. Unique, well-composed and produced, lyrically evocative and irreverent, great integration of jazz motifs. Really memorable and chock full of songs to revisit, this has huge replayability. And that's a massive rarity for me. Solid 5.
LOVE!
Didn't give me a chance to get bored and was so fun and silly and dorky and teetered on the edge of not working for me a few times but ultimately yes absolutely worked for me.
Fuck yeah
Thundercat is a sensational lyricist and musician that adds so many unique and unexpected factors in his music that it keeps me strapped in for the entire way, and this album is no exception. His music is not for everyone out there (Which I get) because of how it can feel more like noise than music, but he definitely proves himself as a capable musician by finding beauty in that self-imposed madness (Uh Uh, Tokyo), while also providing clear and composed tracks that are just great listens on their own (Them Changes, Friend Zone). 5 from me, you should give his live performances a shot if you read these things!
Very cool modern jazz. Not at all what I was expecting. Great record.
Wow, this is different, but in an enjoyable way. The reviews gave me little hope, but I'm thoroughly enjoying this. Maybe it's my affinity for funk and groovy basslines. Never heard of Thundercat before and I don't know how much of this album is him vs. his collaborators contributing to the sound, but this is a solid 4-5*, will decide at the end. Even with some meh tracks, I really like this. In a sea of samey albums in this list, this is a delight. What do the fast funky basslines remind me of? It's on the tip of my tongue. OH I KNOW, BILL WURTZ!! Holy shit, this so reminds me of his short random-ass songs on YouTube. Enjoyed: captain stupido, uh uh, friend zone Goofy shit that got me to giggle: a fan's mail, tokyo
Great album. It's as good as I had hoped. Mellow and smooth. Definitely a vinyl purchase.
I've had heard Thundercat due to his insane bass skills and heard some songs on this album and thought i would give this album around a 3-4 but i absolutely loved the album. It mixes 70s and 80s Funk/soul with a modern touch and a lot of tasty bass lines. I love how he uses allot of more complex harmony ideas from fusion but still keeping it accessible. Also the blend of hip-hop and a bit of nerd humor makes this album is really a interesting touch. the downsides can be the lack of variations in his vocal style, i think this album had benefited with even more featuring artists. a lot of tracks has a tendency to be more in the background (which I'm fine with!) Overall loved it!
It feels like space age jazz. He is clearly a nerd and doing something completely different
So great. I had never heard this before but I agree with the Apple music discussion that it is weird, hard to categorize, and wonderful
Sounds like what frogs listen to, but in the best way.
Dit was echt een geweldige verrassing! Wat een geweldig vet album, vette nummers, originele sound.
Raunchy, funky, and sprinkled with eclectic guest appearances. A delight.
So funky, so smooth, incredible basslines driving weird ass internet tunes. Love it!
Thundercat rules
can work as background music bad actually much more deep
Oh yeah, I grew to love this two years ago. A real journey. Thought at first that the album would be older, judging by the cover. Love the intermissions and the motif at the beginning and end. + Captain Stupido + Day And Night + Walk On By + Tokyo + Friendzone + Them Changes + Inferno
Just gets better with age. I love this album and I love thundercat. best tracks: them changes, A fan's mail, walk on by
5 meows out of 5
Experimental and eclectic in the best way. The remix album of this — titled “Drank” — is also fantastic. 5/5.
Yessssss
Wild and fun!
Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but I have a pretty strong personal connection to this album, it was one of the soundtracks of college for me, so therefore I love it-- I've also seen Thundercat live and he's incredible!
A sonic masterpiece, I was blessed to hear it for the first time when it came out and i am still surprised at the diversity this album offers. No one can do it like thundercat
Modern jazz fusion masterpiece.
This Album made me so horny. I'll add it to my sexy time playlist along with Childish Gambino ;) Good jazz fusion, mixing is really nice. Nice use of keyboard & bass.
Absolute heat
Wow, this album was a journey that I am so glad I went on. It covers the whole gamut of mental states that one may go through when drinking, and you can tell it comes from a deeply personal place. While some of the songs in the second half covered situations that I personally do not agree with, they are necessary to fulfilling the album's full scope and mission.
A relaxing album with some good lyrics not all songs are the same but all of them have the same vibes. It's a recent album so it's not that "classic" art, it's more like interpretative but guided art.
I love thundercat
At times I've had no idea what I'm listening to - except that it's ... fucking amazing? Melodic yet completely unpredictable, odd timings and key shifts punctuate this highly enjoyable album that is absolutely going to take 4 or 5 spins (and did) before I start fully digesting it but this is great. Early favourite: "Them Changes" Based on how many repeat listens I gave this off the bat and how often I've listened to this, 5 pretty easily. Wild and completely unique. 9/10 5 stars.
This is weird as hell. And I love it. At one point, I think he's just meowing to a beat. And come on - Michael McDonald AND Kenny Loggins on the same track? It's like if the Weekend had a baby with, well, Kenny Loggins. But not Danger Zone Kenny - no sir. I'm talking Loggins and Messina Kenny. Captain (E)Stupido - 100% the weirdest opening to a song ever. "Still feel weird". Me too, man, me too. Thudercats HO!
Very nice. Is this bill wurtz? Chill vibes pleasant atmosphere, will listen again.
Lush and lovely.
I love this one. Listened to it a lot in 2020-2021
Such a fun album
very enjoyable! lots of groovy songs
Review #3 of 1001. Impeccable memes, immaculate vibes, incredible musicianship. Was skeptical of this one going in, but it may be my favorite album so far. Favorite song: Friend Zone
Blissful, joyful, stealthy funk. Experimental and easy on the ears…guests like Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald…so fun. Kenderick Lamar can mute.
just straight awesome
Tokyo is a masterpiece Jameels space ride sounds straight out of the 70’s but contemporary at the same time
think i left my wallet in the club
Evocative of all the things 80s but also fresh. I truly enjoyed hearing this, having never heard of the band.
A really fantastic surprise. I had no idea what to expect from this album. I loved how varied it was. From jazzy, Bill Wurtz-esque tracks to more traditional hip hop this album has it all and does it all impeccably.
His a Cat and he lights Thunder. Is he drunk tho? We appreciate the tunes.
Sometimes I get the idea in my head that I am a relatively cool guy and then I hear an album like this which is dripping with so much coolness that I immediately have to buy a one way ticket to squaresville. Groovy, funny, sexy all in equal turns. I immediately need to hear the rest of the Thudnercat discography.
jazzy, smooth, funky
Can't understand the hate in the reviews. Easy 5.
Loved this shit. Super weird and irreverent vibe with sick easy beats.
funk-tastic!
Lots of fun on this one. Something I'll come back to for sure. Faves: A Fan's Mail, Tokyo, Jameel's Space Ride
This was quite an enjoyable listen! I love the low-fi vibes. Definitely sounds like an experimental album. The laughable tracks are funny and light! Sounds like a mix of commercial songs; you know those funny Old Spice/Dr. Pepper/Geico commercials etc etc. But then he pulls everything back together in songs like Lava Lamp and Jethro.
What a wild ride. So good.
I love how Thundercat just comes out swinging with his idiosyncratic weirdness. I think it's brave and it feels like he's being really true to himself. He's got a very unique sound as a result. Like an ADHD kid in the gifted program who was raised on jazz and r&b but got into prog and electronic music. He seems to know no boundaries, musically or lyrically. Nothing seems to be off limits. It almost has this confessional feeling to it. Like he's getting a bunch of shit off his chest and being himself perhaps more completely than ever before in this really liberating way. He is a virtuosic bass player, and sometimes leans into that, but it never comes across as showboating or anything - just another part of the wild ride. Speaking of wild, I can't forget to mention how much I love that he got Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald together again on the track "Show You The Way." I have a very special place in my heart for Yacht Rock, and obviously Thundercat does too, so I deeply appreciate that. I feel like a more apt title for this album would be "Insane," cause that's what I keep saying to myself while I listen to it: this is insane... in the best way. Not something I would put on every day but there are some real moments of brilliance here and I have nothing but respect for his ability to create a sound all of his own.
Good find.
Love Thundercat
Sometimes i'm not in the mood tonlisten to whatever they suggest and just listen to my own shit and then gotta play catch up with the albums i missed. That what i did with Tim Buckley a couple days ago and instead I listened to Thundercat's Drunk cuz its one of my faves and i listen tonit all the time so it was funny to see that Thundercat's Drunk was literally one of the albums i missed when I just happenes to be listening to it anyway. And I'm not even gonna count that listen, imma listen to it again right now cuz its that good.
Eine Wohltat. Kannte ich nicht namentlich, hatte ihn aber unbekannterweise auf Flying Lotus‘ More bereits gehört. Guter Mann, geile Platte.
Perfect album. No weak spots, great features, light hearted and serious topics.
Now we are talking!
It's sexy, it's groovy, it's Nu Funk. Thundercat has style and skills on bass. Crazy to think he's making this after coming out of suicidal tendancies. Love it.
Love Thundercat. Great vibes, great features, great album
Amazing
what a cool album 10/10 it’s such a cool privilege getting to hear an album like this just amazing
thundercat is bae
One of my favourite albums of all time
I love this album. It's intoxicating (pun intended) and delightfully weird.
Heel black power funky singer song writer
What the hell? How did not only this album, but the entire artist get past me so far? Awesome experimental vibes, I'm reminded of Bill Wurtz and Snarky Puppy. I love it! Thank you, 1001albumsgenerator.com!
New Jazz: Funk, Yacht Rock, Soul, techno, humor, realism, sketches, story, ennui, alcoholism, modern introspection, modern vernacular and memes, and every song slaps. 5
New funk/soul/jazz? Really loved this one and have been looking for something like this to add to my rotation.
What a fantastic piece of art. I listened to this twice in the same day and both times it blew me away. I’m truly astounded with how much I loved this. I’ll definitely keep this in my roster of music I listen to.
Bastante chill al principio y a ratos lo chill se distorsiona para generar un sonido más paranoico, me gustó la verdad. Un buen viaje pues. Jamás le había puesto atención a este bajista, a pesar de que sí he escuchado bastante a Flying Lotus. Mis favs: Blackk, I am Crazy, e Inferno.
Buen disco, no conocía nada de esto y me quedó muy buen sabor de boca, "Uh Uh" entre mis favoritas, pero hay varias pistas emocionantes. 9.5/10
One of the best of 2017. Such a fun album, especially Tokyo
4,7 Zeer nice, moet meer thundercat luisteren. Op to pimp a butterfly was hij al zo goed, ik had het moeten weten. Echt iets dat ik zou opzetten bij de boys, working, vibin’ en zelfs met die van ons. Gewoon top
Yessssss!!!!!! Sick album, can't believe it's on here 🤙🤙🤙👌 5/5 all day every day
A bop
This is super cool. The bass is incredible.
Grooves stacked on grooves, sent to outer space to show the assortment of alien species that it is possible for humans to groove.
This was cool
Yes!
7.5/10 - Love a bit of thundercat but to be somewhat critical, it's not an unbelievable album. Plenty of good songs on but a few skips as well. His talent with the bass is unmatched however and his creativity makes up for the skips.
I love love lovveee this album. tbh I've already been a massive fan of thundercat but I hadn't listened to this in a while and its just so good. It feels like your just hanging out with a friend while they're jamming but in the best possible way
Among my favourite albums of the last decade. Thundercat is such a weirdo and I love him for it.
Great album, it really moves.
Thundercat is a bass player on par with Jaco Pastorious and Stanley Clark. That in itself is enough reason to familiarize yourself with his work.
Wild, off-kilter world of Thundercat! This is an album from a musical artist who is truly creating his own space. There isn’t much else contemporary that sounds like this. Jazz fusion that makes you feel like it’s a little slower, faster, or pitched differently than it should be. It’s good stuff!
Very interesting, it's a cool mix of jazz and hip hop. I really like the production, it's very smooth. The album does have some lows, but the highs are very good. Favorite track(s) Uh Uh A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II) Walk On By
The visual image this album gives me is a band of weevils playing their sploinkiest songs at the hottest lounge in bug city. This is such a fucking fun album. Thundercat feels like an artist that shares some adjacency to a band like Ween, artists that are virtuosic, but also wanna write lyrics about the stupidest shit they can think about. WHICH LETS BE CLEAR, is not every song on this album, just the vast majority lmao. Also, Thundercat's musicianship can not be understated, this dude is a monster. He manages to play his bass like a piano sometimes, setting down melodies and basslines in a single lick, setting grooves that on one end are manic and on the other soothing, fuck, sometimes they manage to be both. I think this album gets a few bonus points for how frequently Thundercat is dork-posting in his lyrics, half of these songs are about him being a lil dweeb, its deeply soothing to a terminally online whelp such as I. Another thing I love about this album is it's structure. There's a consistent sound to the album that makes it really easy to throw on in the background and allow it to reenter focus at any moment along it's runtime. Concurrently when actively listening to it, you notice the shorter songs that feel like intermissions. Plus, these grooves usually featured at the ends of songs where everyone finds the pocket and plays like clockwork, they end up feeling like these climaxes to the songs that are not outwardly climactic, I think it's neat. 4.5/5
4. Nice surprise. Never listened to Thundercat before. Any album that can put Kendrick Lamar and Michael McDonald together has my attention.
Weirdo shit in the funnest way. Tokyo and Friend Zone are honestly hilarious songs. A lot of the songs are somewhere between funny and solid, maybe the only one I didn't enjoy was Captain Stupido. Super fun album. "Goku fucking ruined me" - Thundercat, 2017
I appreciate the work, not my favourite especially. good features, and Art Direction.
Pretty good but a tad bit samey.
Hafði virkilega gaman af þessari
Skemmtileg blanda af rugli og ekki rugli
Really liked this one, hard to classify but incredibly unique, has some fantastic grooves on it
4 1/2: This really is an exceptional, playful, skilled record. There is an undercurrent of unseriousness in the writing that keeps me from giving it a full 5-stars, but it still fucks.
Takes a while to get going but from Jameel’s Space Ride there’s a great run of three or four tracks that really make the record
Loved it
I started out thinking I was gonna rate this on the low side, but I just kinda kept grooving to it. Weird as hell, but solid.
Jeg synes faktisk lyden hænger super godt sammen hele vejen gennem albummet, om noget når den at blive lidt samey efter Them Changes. Lille 4
A lot of great songs on this very experimental album. Show You the Way is just so great. I thought it was a bit too long and there's some songs I don't really care for.
That was delightfully whimsical. I will enjoy listening to that again in the future
whimsical. fun. delightful. so fun getting a newer album. will definitely revisit this one
i really liked this!!
a little repetitive but nice
mañana termino de escucharlo, goddddd
Funky also!
this is a big throwback for me, all the way back to freshman year in high school. i used to listen to thundercat and frank ocean and the flaming lips and that was my soundtrack. i really like his voice and the way he sings.
So smooth
This album is a vibe.
When I saw Thundercat made this list I was pretty excited to listen. Since I wasn’t too familiar with his personal projects. But I appreciate Thundercats work as a producer and collaborator with some of my favourite artists. Most notably his collaboration with Mac Miller in his Tiny Desk concert. If you haven’t watched it you definitely should. It’s one of the most viewed Tiny Desk performances for a good reason. I did listen to Drunk a few times after learning it was on the list. So this was nice to come back to after a bit of a break. I’d recommend checking out his newest album released this April called Distracted if you enjoyed this one. He has a track that was recorded with the late Mac Miller on that album among many other enjoyable features.
This album made me feel drunk, was kinda all over the place, one second Thundercat is meowing, the next were in Tokyo, then Wiz Khalifa shows up rapping about drugs n alchohol like its 2010. Into it.
Until now, I knew little more about Thundercat than his name. That has now changed. His third studio album, "Drunk", is an excellent showcase of a highly engaging, eclectic style that blends elements of funk, jazz, soul, hip hop and R&B with psychedelic and progressive pop and rock. At times, it sounds as though Steely Dan and Todd Rundgren, Prince and Earth, Wind & Fire had been jamming together. The artistry of the album lies in the fact that no new elements have been invented here – how could they? – but rather existing elements have been artfully and harmoniously woven together, even though they seem to contradict one another. So it’s no surprise that the album’s guest list features such a diverse range of musicians as Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, Pharrell Williams, Kamasi Washington and Louis Cole. I’m not sure if every track on this highly fragmented album is of the same quality or to my taste, but overall I really like this postmodern ‘jigsaw puzzle approach’.
I’ve heard this before but it’s been a while since I’ve listened to it and it was dang good
Such short clips, sometimes I wished they were longer
(5/7) surprisingly kind of fun
I’m gonna be honest. I was not familiar with Thundercat and I judged hard when I heard the very first track. However, believe me when I say that this record is full of bangers! Adding to my library.
This was something different
I love Thundercat. Such a funny guy. The songs on this album are short and sweet, full of personality and reinforce each other very well. He manages to build a very cohesive and unique sound with a lot of memorable grooves, funny lines and a mix of everything from jazz to soul to r&b to hip hop. Song topics include being hungover, turning into a cat and being a weeb. Among many others. I think his music peaked here. The personality is just irresistible. Bonus points for a hilarious cover.
Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and Pharrell!! are you fucking kidding me. love this hop/funk/soul infused Jazz. such a fun album
this shit is fantastic. This is the kind of hip hop that only the old heads realize is the real shit. Goofy and fun, with some fantastic beats and samples. Genius shit. Bob Dylan stinks.
--Rabbot Ho...intro --Captain Stupido...woah! it's certainly colorful --Uh Uh...holy moly, this is some freaky funk --Bus in These Streets...the dreamy production is nice --A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II)...buttery smooth. I dig the "vinyl" cracks and pops --Lava Lamp...sounds a little like Autre Ne Veut (complimentary) --Jethro...definitely a headphone album. a lot of interesting things going on in the background --Day & Night...we take a short, bass-heavy break --Show You the Way...gonna lay my girl down by the fire --Walk on By...another smooth track but there's not as much going on. I appreciate the Kendrick verse --Blackkk...the crazy production is back. love the bass, love the keyboard (?) sounds --Tokyo...the weirdness continues. video game noises! --Jameel's Space Ride...I'd take a ride --Friend Zone...I also wanna play Mortal Kombat. the fun production marches on --Them Changes...a the Isley Bros. sample?! to nobody's surprise, it fux --Where I'm Going...something a little more relaxing. I appreciate the change of pace --Drink Dat...hmmm, this feels a bit dated. Late 90s/early 2000s "look, I'm at the club and I got money" hip hop. first track I didn't enjoy --Inferno...lush. things feel like they're about to fall apart near the end but he brings all the dissonance together with his calming falsetto --I Am Crazy...another short break --3AM...I like the subtle guitar plucking in the background. maybe that's a harp? --Drunk...this weird, fun album is a breath of fresh air but it's also a little long and things have started to get samey at this point. almost done, though --The Turn Down...Thundercat sounds like even he might be getting bored. Pharrell comes in to try and inject some excitement. It works a little --DUI...the sci-fi production is nice. kind of an odd song but it's weird in a way that could grow on me
dude its like a meme
Awesome bass playing - fun funky album.
For once I don’t recommend vinyl! It’s odd cos the vinyl release of “Drunk” is a rather beautiful artefact: 4xRed 10” each in their own sleeve (and inner!) all in a proper box. As a listen though, the album benefits from a straight sitting start to finish, and flipping vinyl across 8 sides breaks up the vibe something shocking. The album is already a piecemeal offering of vignettes that work well as a continuous stew of tributaries and excursions in a world where Thundercat knows 70s Soul, Jazz Fusion and Yacht Rock need to unite and express emotions with a 21 century production context. When it’s taken on in fits and starts it becomes a disconcerting struggle to keep up with, even if there are moments of such beauty they jump out in any circumstance. There’s a lot to absorb, don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Alternatively, head for the follow up, It Is What It Is, which is a more straightforward listen and imo a superior one.
Wow. This was a trip! I don’t know how often I would come back to this but it was definitely an enjoyable ride. I had heard of Thundercat as a bass player but had never listen to him. It’s funny to know that his bass-style is somewhere between Stanley Clarke (Uh Uh) and Bootsy Collins (Friend Zone), but at some point he played for Suicidal Tendencies. Musically, there’s a lot more Barry White and Curtis Mayfield. Lyrically there is some funny shit in here: “I went totally to dentist and he gave me a toy / It was DragonBallZ, a slap-wrist Bracelet / Hilo fucking ruined me / A love affair with Tokyo” (Tokyo) or “I want to go on a ride I’m safe on my block /except for the cops /Will they Attack / Would it be ‘cause I’m black?” (Jameel’s Space Ride). I am perplexed, confused, and amused. I definitely going to give this another try soon because I do my think I got it all in the first three listens….
🧠 🎆
Started out skeptical, but had a good time
wowza
It isn't life changing but it is very good and consistent
This is a great record. It's relaxing and has some good collabs too. Thundercat has some hilarious lyrics in some of these tracks. Favourite Track(s): Uh Uh, Jethro, Walk On By, Them Changes Least Favourite Track(s): Friend Zone, Drink Dat
Quite intriguing modern soul jazz. The musicianship and arrangements are strong - occasionally stunning - and diverse, the vocals, often falsetto, are an acquired taste but by no means bad. Interesting artist with great chops and pedigree, and accompanied by the top players on his scene (K Washington among others).
Neo-soul is cool and all, but I really love when it gets weird like this. Outside of some big artists in the genre like Tyler the Creator, the style hasn't really gripped me yet, but this album intrigued me simply by dint of how strange it all was. 8/10 would get drunk to this
Although Thundercat is one of my favorite modern artists, this particular project does suffer from sounding kind of unfocused as a whole. That’s to be expected, he's very much a jazz artist among other things, so there's bound to be some improvisation and many left turns. To me, his bass playing is the star and forever a joy to hear. What's hilarious is seeing people on here complaining about how “all this guy does is push random buttons and make overprocessed computer sounds”. No dude, that's just Thundercat with a six-string and a wah pedal!! He really plays like that!! Standouts: Uh Uh • Lava Lamp • Jethro • Walk On By • Tokyo • Friend Zone • Them Changes
This caught my attention right away. I love how he not only tells the story of a drunk night out, but uses the music to make it feel like you're experiencing it with him. This is so cool on multiple levels.
Vachement bien
How the fuck did I dislike this on my first listen? Was I stupid? This album rips. It feels like someone crossed an episode of Atlanta with Songs in the Key of Life. Its a sprawling, insane epic of jazz, and hip-hop, and R&B that I am actively getting excited about listening to again as I write this. Since TPAB, I have known that Thundercat has insane chops, but this project really does feel otherworldly. 4.2
-fun, sort of whimsical R&B album -enjoyed listening to it, easy listening Fav: Tokyo
Ok I had no idea what to expect from this. It's interesting stuff - lots of odd little tracks with really interesting chaotic jazz and funny lyrics. Some of the tracks put me off at first because they were a little too much like smooth contemporary r&b stuff, but while he's got this beautiful smooth contemporary r&b voice, what he's singing is stuff like how high he is or "oh my god where's Captain Planet" instead of the usual boring "oooooh baby" kinda stuff. So put all that together and I'll say this album is pretty great. 4
A very interesting album from the kimono wearing bass player Steven Lee Bruner. The music bears little resemblance to Thundercat's live sound and comes across as a rather stylish collection of groovy fragmentary tracks who happen to have some 'A list' collaborators (Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Wiz Kalifa) on some of them. His voice to me sounds like the falsetto of Mike Lindup from Level 42 but his playing is varied and at times remarkable. Worth another spin from time to time.
Another surprise from the list, I quite enjoyed this. Thundercat writes some truly funny lyrics and very unconventional melodies. I'm not usually someone who would put on any rap music, but I really enjoyed it here.
I think Thundercat would kill a blaxploitation film soundtrack
Part poetry, part humorous musings, all funk; this album is a delight. It’s easy to let the beats and funky synth fade into the background, but you will definitely miss some fun thoughts and poetry. I genuinely laughed at a few lines due to both the absurdity and the relatability. This may not be the most musically impressive album, and none of the songs will make you rethink your life. It’s just fun and worth every single second of your attention!
Fun and weird in a good way. I'd give it a half a star extra to round it up.
this guy is a NERD. its good but VERY self indulgent, which I guess makes sense that they would have yacht rock guys on here. good, but I feel like he needs to relax a little
Super fun, chill, mostly silly
I like how he drew on influences and how it sounded like a modern take on some older music. It felt refreshing in that sense, however it did seem a little drawn out after a while
Extra star for artwork and being a bit mad
Started well, dropped off in quality for me. Giving it a narrow 4 because I like his work and I don’t know if other stuff will appear. I am not promising to be consistent in this approach. So there.
What an interesting album. I think at times the lyrics are a little too silly and take away from music. That being said this should probably be a 4 star average because of how good the music is.
It's almost like taking Zappa into a more modern vibe. Weirdness that eventually fall into wonderful compositions, in a very very OG way. Artifacting his unrelentless challenge of what good music actually can be, in a modern setting, where his musical approach gets praised and merged to someone like Kendrick Lamar. Im happy that Thundercat was picked for this challenge, otherwise I'd probably had him only somewhere in the background. Really not putting my time into getting the awesomeness he represents. I've seen him live, I have rated To Pimp a Butterfly, and now finally having his full album in front of me. Sure, this is an album that needs its time and patience. It will grow on you.
a floaty dreamy silky suite that mostly serves as a showcase for thundercat's personality. the fact that he's often crass, self-deprecating, and overtly nerdy over the whole throwback style may seem like a jarring clash, but given the goofy irreverence that george clinton and co could manage on one of their 70s records, its not actually as out there as it might seem. its still certainly very 2017 in its post-ironic cynicism that seems ironically Naive now, but i think im getting far enough away from that period that im starting to wrap around to it being an interesting period to re-experience. not one of my big faves or anything, but the chops in performance in composition are very strong!
Este álbum si que ha sido de mi estilo. Un R&B muy cuidado, con colaboraciones muy buenas como Kendrick Lamar o Wiz Khalifa. Gratamente sorprendido con Thundercat, que no lo conocía
One of the most modern albums I've listened to yet. Surprised I've never heard of them before, but I ended up enjoying it. Really smooth sound
𝘋𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘬 is one of the more intriguing soul-related records of the 2010s — a dizzy blend of funk, jazz, R&B, and Thundercat’s unmistakable sense of humor. The album drifts like a late-night conversation: loose, vulnerable, sometimes absurd, but held together by his effortless bass playing and ear for strange, beautiful harmonies. What makes it work is the balance between playfulness and melancholy. Even at its most chaotic, there’s a real emotional core running through these short, fleeting tracks. It’s an odd album, but a compelling one.
From the name, to the cover, to the track list names I don’t know what I expected from this but definitely not what I got. Great album.
3.75 - Such an iconic artist and album, Them Changes was actually my personality my senior year of college. So funk and cool and untouchable basslines. Only rating it below a 4 because I only really care to listen to probably 30% of the album outside of the album as a whole. Fav songs: Them Changes, Jethro, Walk on By
I enjoyed that. I'd not come across Thundercat before and I'm very happy to have listened to this. It's nice to have guests on your album, I suppose, but I preferred the songs without guests.
This is a strong album. I love the vocal style and melodies. The bass work is innovative and just sits so well with the rest of the music.
Silly and funky, just what I'd expect from a Thundercat album. Honestly maybe a little bit TOO silly, even...everyone wants to be a cat? well yes! but I don't want to hear a song about it, I fear, even if it is groovy as all get out. 7/10
I dig the vibes, and of course, this being Thundercat, the bass lines are fantastic. It's got a very funky hip-hop feel to it.
It's cool
An incredibly fun and funky record. There were so many moments while I was listening to this where I had a smile plaster to my face because of what I was hearing. Thundercat is not only a phenomenal bassist but a fantastic composer, with even the incredibly short songs on here sounding essential.
Favorite Track: Show You The Way
Tolles Album! Toller Künstler
This was groovy, I dig it!
I recall when this came out I had read many positive articles about it, so I decided to give the album a listen. If my memory serves me I liked it, but not enough to listen again or try some of his previous records. I was excited to jump back into this today, as my tastes have changed in the last 9 years (and especially with this project) and I thought I might get more out of it now than back then. Musically I really enjoyed it a lot. There's a lot of variety and I thought every song was fun to listen to. There were no songs that totally blew me away, but there also weren't any I wanted to skip. My favorites were Show You The Way (I loved the introduction of the guest singers), Friend Zone, and Them Changes. But I got good laughs from Tokyo and A Fan's Mail. All in all I enjoyed this a lot, but like before I won't jump into the rest of his catalogue.
This album was so smooth. The cameo from Kendrick was great as well as the nod to bitch don't kill my vibe. I've seen Thundercat live and that huge bass is so cool and mesmerizing. Funk groove bass at it's finest.
this was fun, it reminded me a lot of jacob colliers stuff and honestly a lot of other contemp tbh artists like blood orange’s newest. rnb with a lot of breezy electronic synths and he had some funny lyrics. felt like something substantial was missing though, didn’t feel like there was much to sink into. but great to have on in the car
Thundercat is cool; Drunk is cool. Thundercat is kind of reinventing soul and funk in his own, deeply idiosyncratic way. Drunk is utterly steeped in prog and Afrofuturism. It's music that's looking to the past but still forging bravely ahead. And it sounds incredibly unique. The basslines are all texture, Thundercat makes his instrument of choice bubble, slither, and spider along. The jazz chords and key changes are dizzying. And when the percussion is there, it brings something frantic to the mix. Sometimes, it really does feel like the album *is* drunk. What Thundercat is doing sounds truly unique. His personality comes out very strongly in his writing and vocals as well. He's funny, thoughtful and smart. The few features are good too. I will say that every once in a while, things get a little more tongue in cheek than I'd like. I also think the last few songs are a little low on energy. And, I just don't really like Tokyo, it's just a little much. But this album is still creative, and brisk and smartly written. And I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.
Thundercaaaaat! Baaaasssss! Kendriiiiiick! Even Kenny Loggins!
