++: The Humpty Dance, Rhymin' on the Funk, Underwater Rimes (Remix), Gutfest '89 (Edit), Freaks of the Industry, Doowutchyalike, Packet Prelude, Packet Man +: The Way We Swing, The New Jazz (One), Packet Reprise +-: The Danger Zone, Sex Packets, Street Scene 7,6/10
Who knew you could pack so much sex into packets? Digital Underground, that's who. The Humpty Dance is an instant classic, but the rest... Well, let's just say it's a bit of a pack it up and go for me. The energy's there, and Humpty's vocals are a trip, but overall, it's a one spinner. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - The Humpty Dance - The Way We Swing - Doowutchyalike
I was fully expecting to jam out to Humpty Dance (after all, I'm a Xennial) and then get bored quickly by the rest of the album. To my surprise, I had a really good time with the other songs too. Some misogyny and yikes-ey lyrics about underage girls (yes, I know, it was the 90s) keep it from being more than 3 stars, but overall this was mostly fun.
Goofy, over the top but well-constructed. The Humpty Dance introduced most of us to Digital Underground, and it sets the tone for what follows, an album about sex and a comical pill for the "safest sex." Some of the songs are catchy, and some are mind-numbingly repetitive, but it's not bad.
its seems pretty dated but it must have seemed cutting edge in 1990. anyway its fine
2/25/26. Interesting, will need a few more listens to grasp the narrative going through the album. But looking at other aspects, pretty fun hip hop album, even if I thought it was a tad repetitive. Very clever and humorous lyrics.
Holy, 6 songs out of 14 were about condoms. These guys must be agents of big rubber.
I really only knew The Humpty Dance before this and it's fun as a sort of novelty song, but that dude's voice would get so annoying if it it was all that, but it's funny to read that's an alter ego. But there's lots of good jams, I love the jazzy and funky bits. I will always have a soft spot for this era of alternative hip hop, it's just interesting and different. My only issue is maybe there is just too much here, there's something to be said for a shorter album to make an impact and not overstay the welcome.
Well, that was something! On one hand, at least it isn't about guns, bling and misogyny, but on the other WTF is it about? A concept album about some fictional sex drug?! Feels old school, which is good, but I think it was a bit too silly. Didn't like the Humpty dance. Or most of the sex packet stuff. Didn't mind the underwater rimes though. Think 3 is fair
Listenable. Not bad in itself but not my thing.
The rap style was cool, but kinda beatin' a dead horse with the raunch.
It was alright but realistically won’t ever throw on again on my own volition
Great album but went on for longer than it should've
Okay. It's definitely got some fun late 80s/early 90s vibes, and the concept is inherently ridiculous, but the lyrics... man, times have changed since 1990.
Digital Underground (and especially Shock G) was everything right about music. Never taking themselves too seriously, quality beats, great flow, and development of community. Y'all know this is where 2Pac started, right? You know that Shock G was famous for taking in and helping young artists? Just good, fun stuff. Yes, we could easily cut three songs and be better, and yes, the back half of the album has not aged well from a feminist perspective. It was, however, the early '90s. I'm not excusing that, but evaluating it in the context of the time, this was not even close to offensive. Influence 5. Quality 3. Hits 4. Intangibles 3. The Humpty Dance is my dance 4.
Good old school rap album! Plus the Humpty dance! Lol
It’s silly and hasn’t aged all the best, but it’s fun at least. Not the greatest example of hip hop that should be represented on the list when Rakim isn’t present at all. The Humpty Dance is kind of a novelty. The beats are funky.
Helt okej, lite udda texter men ändå ok.
Tudo muito igual. Nada demais. 3 passa de ano
Nao tava na vibe
Ignore the period typical misogyny and there’s a decently fun collection of songs here. I was grooving. I was laughing.
Honestly... I love The humpty dance They sound so nice and polite! Even the song about the ***** & the **** fest sounds kinda polite! I got spooked when they used the b word (bitch) in danger zone, like guys CALM DOWN! But for real, past the opener and the early part of this record, it quickly gets a bit tedious for me. It's soso! But I'm giving a 3 for the MO-THER-FLIP-PING-HUMP-TY-DAN-CE! BAG IT UUUUUP BROTHERS!
My kind of hip-hop but the spoken word parts get a bit tiring
like I guess? it was very fun but everything surrounding it made me think the ENTIRE album would be about these fictional packets and then it was just the last few songs .. but it was fun. why was one of the packets a 17 year old tho
Always a fun time to listen to Digital Underground. The Humpty Dance holds a special place in my heart, and if ya liked that one you'll probably like the rest of the songs. Nothing crazy on here though, but it's good fun.
a wacky zig zag in the timeline and trajectory of hip hop. I think most 90s hip hop has a primary genre of inspiration, like Tribe and jazz, NWA and punk tendencies. Digital Underground brought with them the exuberance, goofy attitude, and samples of funk. But more comical and def more horny. This album has characters, but no skits (thank god). Plenty of great samples, notably Parliament Funkadelic. Bars that are still ridiculous and fun. It might be a little *too* much, but I enjoyed it.
Blind album and artist. This album hooked me so hard and then dropped off by the end. The instrumentals are fantastic, I just wish it could've held up with some other artists of this sampling and style.
The second half of this record really drops the ball to me. Side A is an excellent, fun, and funky hip-hop record.
5/10 – Mediocre
Now I know where they Humpty dance is from, that being said - it's a fun album, I dig it
Confused by this album. Fun and hilarious at times. Innovative. Playful. Really sexually aggressive. I’m trying to figure out how to engage with very classically aggressive media made by young men at all, especially when it feels inspired mostly by sexist ideals and porn. However, it’s fucking funny. The different character voices were kind of distracting in a song, and not my taste, but it was funny and playful and experimental and that was the point. Felt soooo 90s. I’m glad that this is album was in the list because I probably would not have listened to it otherwise. Not sure how to rate this one because it’s completely subjective and I’m still confused by it
Humpty Dance is a classic, the rest is decent
The lyrics were the worst part
Big fan of 90s rap but I was never really down with the underground. A fine, fun LP but just not my flavours. Humpty Dance still slaps though
Album #1,013 Wow, I never expected to see this album here! When I was in high school, I loved the Humpty Dance. Recorded it off the radio. Wrote down all the lyrics. Memorized them. Asked my mom what 69 meant. I couldn't forget them now if I tried. It was the kind of rap I liked most, the fun kind. I have never the full album until now. Well, it's a mixed bag. On the one hand, you've got the fun, party songs like Humpty Dance and Doowutchyalike, which are great. Then you have the weird, sex obsessed ones like the entire Sex Packets suite, Gutfest, and Freaks of the Industry. I'll go ahead and round up to a 3/5 mostly based on my nostalgia for one song. I did find it strange in the song The Humpty Dance, he explicitly references Doowutchyalike, explaining that he was the one who sang "just grab 'em in the biscuit," but we don't hear that song until later. Maybe it had to do with the chronological release of singles, but it's weird listening to the album's track list in order.
Prefacing this as a clear reflection of its time. At times, sex-positive hip hop with some really fun samples, and a shocking approachability from male voices talking about respectful, consensual relationships. At other times, wildly raunchy and offensive - while occasionally done with a "we're just kidding" tone where the artists attempt to roll off of it as a joke. At its best, these are soft-hearted lumps that play a tough game with their beats but really are just horny dudes about "doing it in a Burger King bathroom." At its worst, groan-inducing and a lot of punching down on women. Sound wise... heavy DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince influence (or inspiration?), and clearly an inspiration for Lonely Island (Dick in a Box). Title track reminds me a bit of Beck's Debra, which came later (did Beck steal this one?).
Think I already know 'The Way We Swing'. I enjoyed 'Freaks of the Industry' haha, funny dilemma, situational lyrics and the 'Love to Love You Baby' Donna Summer sample worked well. I really like the little samples that came in at random points - Chic's 'Good Times' featuring in 'Doowutchyalike'. Packetman is funky - nice sax
Most of the rap was quite good. The beats/samples were also pretty good. Still too much talking for a 4 star. Definitely one of the better hiphop albums.
45/1089 3.1771* Rip Humpty. This is a good album overshadowed by the classic Humpty dance. It has great beats and MCs and would be good background during a poker game. Hits...Humpty dance
I really liked their voices, so smooth and cool. But the songs were just so silly, it was hard to take them seriously.
I really liked this from a musical perspective, but the lyrics on some of the songs are just a bit too over-the-top horny for me. I'm not a prude, but some of the lyrics (e.g. on "Packet Man") are just wack. All in all I'm glad to have heard this, but I'm not sure if I'll do a full listen again any time soon. I'll likely be listening to some of the songs again, though. 3/5 (not that far from a 4/5, but the lyrics are just too all over the place for my personal liking)
Weird album. Not bad, but got tired by the end
So, I had taken a break as I was busy with other things. Anyway, I loved the first track of "Sex Packets". It should be in my playlist. As "Sex Packets" progressed, the songs got progressively worse. It's still a good album, even at its worst. 3 stars for "Sex Packets".
i'm ngl. i did not enjoy this whatsoever in the beginning LMAO. i mean everyone knows and loves the humpty dance but damn those lyrics????? then the songs got ugh and then they got fun again LMAO anyway bless you tupac and your sexy ass for existing and then deciding to go solo 🤍
I had absolutely no clue about these people, but it was more fun than I expected it to be. Not gonna listen to it again though.
I liked this way more than I thought I would. It's stupid fun and it sounds great. Loved the chemistry between the band members. I can't quite bring myself to give it a 4 but I could see listening to this again, so maybe it would grow on me
Ift. at det er hip-hop er det ok for mig
Ya know this wasn't bad, but my god it was too long. I felt like the songs could often have been cut shorter and we could have done without a few. That said, I really enjoyed the instrumentals throughout, sampling from classic rock, jazz, and funk. Many of the vocals sound familiar, but I can't quite place them. On the whole I'm glad for the ride, but would have liked a condensed version. Took me a minute, but I realized that The Way We Swing sounds familiar to me because its the same exact guitar breakdown that Umphrey's uses on Mail Package, which I think I knew, but didn't quite register is originally a Jimi Hendricks song Who Knows. Underwater Rimes is a cool flip of Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man. Freaks of the Industry, while overly horny, features a pretty great laid back beat and some solid flow. For me this falls in a 3/4 range, erring low because it felt bloated.
Such an incredibly strange concept for an entire album with these Sex Packets. This album also had every sound known to man on it, was a bunch of random stuff going on. A good amount of songs were really goofy and fun like Underwater Rimes. But there were a few too many raunchy songs with moaning in my ear on. This was a surprise of an album though and lands as a high 3
This took a fair bit of effort to finish. Not that it was bad, but I found a lot of the beats and motifs repetitive. That being said, it was pretty mad and out there and amusing in parts (starting off with describing his nose as a pickle). Low 3.
5.5/10
I enjoyed the music but the songs were too long
Some decent hippin' and a hoppin'. Just scraping in for a 3.
It's a shame because there's a lot of great talent here and these tracks are groovy and the rhymes are slick and hot, but to be honest with you, it drags on and then gets really weird. Which I don't necessarily mind, but they did go from edgy to vulgar
Decent enough rap album. Had some songs that blew (both figuratively and literally), and some decent ones. Don't know why every song needed to be 6 minutes long. Made it a bit of a slog but it didn't sound bad.
In some ways this is quite ahead of its time for an 80s hip hop record. It definitely sounds more modern than something like Run DMC, e.g. with the jazzy elements. There are highlights (Humpty Dance, Rhymin on the Funk) but definitely lowlights as well (Gutfest 89, Sex Packets). I thought Doowutchyalike was quite an interesting song, almost like prog rap with the different elements, but back to back 7+ min songs (discounting the prelude) lost some momentum for me and the rest of the album was a bit of a drag. 3* seems fair for a hit and miss album
I liked and disliked this in equal measures. Lead has a great voice and some of the lyrics are very witty. But the other half are either weird or demeaning to women. It's of it's time I suppose, and a lot less violent than early Eminem.
sometimes stupid is okay
Sexy
Meh
Humpty Dance! There were a few tracks I liked, but I skipped a few too.
Pretty smooth
Goofy fun but little more
Musikalisch nice, textlich naja. Rap.
Unique approach and lyrics, but not so much on the samples.
I like music I can move about to. But some of the tracks overstayed their welcome. Lyrics were ok but represented a time clearly in the infancy of hiphop. The “rhyme” and “MC” lyric count was huge and some of the playful ‘gags’, like the announcement to radio DJs in Doowutchyalike sound very dated. Overall ok as a museum piece.
This song reminds me of summers down the Jersey shore at my friends house. First I limps to the left like my legs is boosted. Humpty dance. Classic song. The rest? This is an excessively long record. Only other song I recognized was doowutchyalike.
While I am not a rap aficionado, this was definitely an approachable album.
It was great to hear some of that older music I grew up with. The music and the beats sounded really good, the lyrics were kind of silly like De La Soul back in that day. I’m sure it was fun party music.
Couple of serious bangers. Sounds like if Parliament made a rap album
I'll take a sex packet
Wow. What a wild ride. I was laughing a lot. I love the old school hip hop charm. The Humpty Dance. What a hilarious track. I like my oatmeal lumpy Every track is 5+ minutes. They are vibing out on these beats. Is this maybe a club oriented thing? Apparently it’s a concept album but that doesn’t become apparent until the last 5 tracks. I love the concept album in a hip hop context though. Packet Man is my standout. ‘Biochemically compacted sexual affection, now here, take a look at my selection’ hit so nice. I actually laughed out loud while driving cause the delivery was so smooth. What a trip. I think I really liked it, though I did get a little tired of the lengthy tracks. I am a sucker for the old school hip hop delivery, cute as it may be at this point, it just feels so nice. I have a hard time giving this a 4 cause I feel like most of my enjoyment of it is kind of ironic?
So when dudes tell me constantly how much ass they get I immediately assume they can’t get no ass. Packet Man is a wild song. This album is hilarious and I enjoyed it even though it’s so creeptastic. The beats are actually pretty good for early 90s rap and the lyrics are so silly but it was fun.
Weird
Gutfest 89 - hmmmm
Good beats and flows, except all the songs don't have to be so damn long. The lyrics can be very outdated and cringey at times, but overall the album was okay.
We will be moving our stuff into her old place as well! 9am Saturday at our place if you're available.
OMG I wasn't expecting to laugh out loud multiple times during this album. Some of Sex Packets was definitely of its time, but I haven't heard a hip hop song about safe sex before. For a "horny-on-main" album, I thought this would be a lot more inappropriate and degrading than it was, so I'm impressed with Digital Underground. And the beatz are catchy and fresh! The title-song is this eighties, sultry R&B tune that I genuinely enjoyed. Not bad, not bad at all.
I wasn't familiar with Digital Underground, or the big hits from this album, so this was all new to me. Surprising myself, I actually found this album to be pretty catchy. The hip-hop here is funky, and quite different than a lot of what was out at the time. The album is DEFINITELY about being SUPER horny, though. Definitely a strong entry musically for a group's first album. Probably close enough to a 3 for me to warrant the round up.
Funky. Fun.
Better
Another fun discovery. Smart lyrics/rhymes, funky beats, overall very enjoyable. Songs were a lot longer than you’d expect but they didn’t feel like it while listening to them.
Not as bad as the title makes it sound!
Hip.Hop is my favorite genre and I had heard "Humpty Dance " no.less than 1000 times. Prior to today i had never heard this album in its entirety. This album is a great example of hip hop in 1989/1990. There are sex songs (this one more so than others not made by 2 Live Crew or Too Short), a song about the perils of crack , a (great) dance song, and the rest is just rapping about rapping. I.love that period and i like this album. Its a shame that Digital Underground doesn't get more acclaim. I love the weirdness, the 8 minute songs and the influence (to my ears at least) that this had on some.of.my favorite artists.
The Humpty Dance!
Strange and playful, which is an odd descriptor for 90s hip-hop. Heavily influenced by (and sampling from) Parliament/Funkadelic (according to Wikipedia), this is appropriately humorous but not nearly as infectious, groove-wise. A good listen and a nice taste of the diversity that actually exists in the rap world but also not an album that'll go into my rotation. Better than another boring, self-absorbed Britpop record.3/5
I saw the title and the cover and really wanted to hate this album. Instead I found out it's fun. And let me say this - those aren't players, those are NERDS.
Not bad. Humpty Dance has nostalgic appeal and is still fun
As much as I am digging the funk, the lyrics are truly off-putting. Rappers spit words, so don’t they realize lyrics are important? Most of the lyrics on this album are either juvenile level dumb, or misogynistically offensive. It’s a shame because the rhythmic vibe is dope.
Sex packets are an interesting concept! When Digital Underground popped up today, I had a vague memory of seeing them at a Chicago rave in 1999 that was Willy Wonka themed. It's interesting they were there, those parties weren’t heavy on the hip-hop. I don't remember much about the show, but I do remember it being a lively event! These guys have a great energy and a fun sound. And who doesn't love The Humpty Dance? I didn't necessarily love anything beyond that track but I do love Humpty's unique vocals and just the general party they bring to this music.
Pretty funny early hip-hop back when we didn't really understand what cool was lolololol
Cringy lyrics on songs like Gutfest notwithstanding, I liked this overall. The goofy spirit is just fun, Humpty Dance is absolutely stupid and iconic and catchy, and songs like Underwater Rimes are just refreshing in a weird way, guys are not taking themselves seriously at all. Its just got a loose feel that I appreciate, even if its too silly for its own good at times. Songs are way too long too, but that was the style of the time and early hip hop so I guess it gets a pass there
The Humpty Dance is actually pretty fire…. it’s giving no digitty Underwater rimes is not the vibes honestly Songs are kinda sounding the same… I liked the little mid album instrumental moment. Doowutchalike was wayyyyy too long for no reason Only made it to 9 songs. Will finish listening another time :) One song added to playlist!
Super weird concept album about sex packets.
Funky, fun. The sex l constant sex motifs wear a bit thin toward the end though
fun
dig it
It was ok
this was fire
On huonompiakin kuultu.⭐️⭐️⭐️
Old school / "sexy" hiphop
Hip-hop funk assez sympa, parfois un peu cheesy, mais qui passe bien
Started enjoying this album a bit more when I realised it was deliberately ludicrous. Some of the instrumental stuff was actually quite enjoyable and the lyrics and theme were pretty funny to a point. Bit long for me though and I wasn't blown away. Favourite track- Sex Packets. 6.5/10
Going in, I had no idea what this was or who these guys were. Incredibly dated production, sound, and a very innocent vibe. Even the explicit lyrics feel tame, like a Carry On movie. I imagine for Hip Hop fans this is akin to a modern day hardcore Metal fan listening to rock music from the 50s. The recognisable elements are there, and yet it sounds alien and distant. A good metaphor for evolution for any science-denying God boys out there. This reminded me of watching Fresh Prince and Sister, Sister - those hallmarks of boundary blurring TV for white folks. Lyrics are funny in places, and I assume tongue in cheek rather than misogynistic. Most songs are at least a minute too long and the album has at least two songs more than it should. By the end the entertaining groove becomes monotonous, and the repetitive nature inherent in the genre becomes painful.
...ok
This would be a 4 if all the songs were 2 minutes shorter.
6/10 Favorite: The Humpty Dance
The concept part of the ablum is really interesting and the chorus of the song sex packets is super catchy. I just didn't really vibe with the rest of the ablum.
Mehhhh 2.5/5
Opening the album with a funny song really sets the tone for what to expect on the rest of the album. Much better way to do it than to start serious and then thrown in a bunch of cheesy songs about sex in the middle.
ok
Is not being able to finish a common side effect of Sex Packets? Don't get me wrong, a lot of this was good for me but remember fellas, it is possible to last too long.
Funky hip hop grooves that feel playful and upbeat. Lots of strong moments on the album but the songs seem way too long & drawn-out at times. Felt like I was waiting for a pay off or switch in vibe at times.
Funky
Nicht so ganz meins
Blast from the 80s. When rap got silly for a while.
Couple of good tracks
Very primitive but charismatic in its own ways. Nothing would be made today that sounds or feels like this. Started to drag in the middle a lot but then got VERY horny. Not my thing but cool to check out this once.
Silly
3.1 2x
Some future dystopia. Once again Den and Beth were there. Kerry was unhappy. We all lived in some strange half trash pile half apartment. I was constantly trying to validate myself. Mostly faded now. Probably wouldn't remember anything if it weren't a recurring Den. Kenneth was there.
Goofy hip hop, it’s a fun listen
Funky, funny, entertaining and fun. Humpty Dance is one of the largest rap singles of all time, so on the merits of that alone this one belongs, but these guys had a unique sound and style that makes this one much more than a single with some other stuff.
Juzgué duramente a este disco basándome solo en su género y portada. Si bien no me voy a volver fan de Digital Underground, para nada me lo pasé escuchándolo. Me parece un álbum muy sólido de hip hop y sin problemas volvería a escucharlo.
Aight
Kinda training wheels rap, with a few legends breaking through
first listen ultimately suffers from length and production, it's okay
Not my fave took forever and i fell asleep 5 times
Pretty good
Well built music and a flowing style that I generally like. But song lyrics and topics of songs are very run of the mill and not interesting to me.
😕
This is very silly.
Humpttttyyyyyy!!!
If you told me the album with the Humpty Dance would be on this list, I'd call you crazy. But overall, the album was pretty good. It creeped up to a 4 in the front half, but reverted back to a 3 in the back half. I think the title track was the worst one.
This is fun but it really starts to drag, too long
Honestly, decent hip-hop. But I was ready for it to be over after only a few songs. That's more of a reflection of long form rap/hip-hop and my music tastes than it is of the band, though.
Not my go to at all, but I can appreciate the subtle twist in style of the artists here on the genre of music.
Endearingly charming with some fun grooves going, especially early on Isn't technology a marvel?
My first exposure to Digital Underground was Weird Al’s use of “The Humpty Dance” in one of his polka medleys. If I remember correctly, that medley also contained Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” and The Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself.” Great stuff for an eleven-year-old boy. I don’t think I gave that song much thought until it was referenced in a Homestar Runner Halloween cartoon, where Coach Z was dressed as Humpty Hump. When I finally heard the full version of the song around that time, I was in laughing fits at the crass lyrics. I have no idea what the rest of this album is going to be like, but I’d wager a guess that it’s going to sound incredibly dated. Whether or not that’s a bad thing remains to be seen! Sex Packets is a bit of a mess, but it’s a fun mess. Despite the length of the overall album and the individual songs, the beats and samples kept me pretty interested, while the lyrics were more hit-and-miss. As I expected, the overall sound was a bit dated, with looped samples and tons of scratching, but I didn’t mind it. This album was at its best when it was horny, goofy, or a mix of both. It was at its worst when it was just talking about rapping. As a result, the album felt a bit uneven in terms of tone, especially on “The Danger Zone.” “The Danger Zone” was a pretty good song, but it was hard to take its message seriously when it’s on an album that talks about Humpty Hump’s large nose tickling a woman’s anus while 69ing. And that’s a damn shame, because these guys can do a serious song pretty well. On some songs, like “The Way We Swing,” “Rhymin’ on the Funk,” and “Gutfest ’89,” the rapping felt pretty lazy and uninspired. It was really disappointing on “Gutfest ’89,” which had some clever lyrics and fun beats and samples. “The Humpty Dance” is the crown jewel of Sex Packets. The lyrics are crass, hilarious, and tacky, but it’s an incredibly fun song, full of some of the most juvenile rap lyrics I’ve ever heard. “hey yo fat girl, c'mere--are ya ticklish?” is incredibly cringe-worthy, but it cracks me up every time I hear it. That whole first verse is pure poetry. Shakespeare could never write anything like that. The beats on “The Humpty Dance” are great too, and for a song that’s over six minutes long, I thought it stayed really engaging. “Underwater Rimes” was a nice change of pace from the two songs before it. It was goofy, and the beats and samples felt fresh. I did hate that the 1920’s gangster voice that was used on “The Way We Swing” reared its ugly head again, but other than that, “Underwater Rimes” was excellent. ‘I’ll call my homie Moby Dick’ was a nice allusion (take that, high school English lit class). “Freaks of the Industry was incredibly crass and tacky as well, but I thought it was funny and enjoyable. “Packet Man” was a fun closing track, and like my other favorite songs on the album, it was crass but funny as well. Even though this album was a bit ridiculous, I thought it was mildly enjoyable, and it’s a unique slice of early nineties hip-hop.
This took me a few songs to get into it but once I got the tone of this album I thought it was very enjoyable - felt very comedic at times and enjoyed it more as a novelty with some good backing music. Thought this would be a 2 star album but has surprised me.
Pretty good.
"Humpty Dance" is a classic, of course, but the rest of this is pretty average in my book. None of it is bad, and if you love mellow hip-hop it's a good example. Definitely appreciate the lack of the n-word and lack of skits that a lot of hip-hop artists tended to overuse. I wasn't really feeling it today though. Maybe if more of the songs were as fun as the big hit, or maybe it needs more sonic diversity, but the longer it went on it felt like too many songs with little payoff.
The Humpty dance is truly a wonderful memory for my job. Everything else was just, okay.
3/5. The lyrics can be a bit cringe but the beats are phenomenal, the funkiness of the hip hop is so clean and smooth, it makes sense that it sounds like Parliament-Funkadelic because they are those samples. Upon further listening, the lyrics are not great in general due to the verbal assault against women but it's hard to deny the catchiness of these tracks. And then kind of an queer ally with Doowutchyalike. Then he mentions about being with a 17 year old and then he loses me. I wanted to like this more but there are some aged lyrics here that bring it down. Best Song: The Humpty Dance, Doowutchyalike, The Danger Zone
🗣️ SHAKING MY ASS (but some of the lyrics are a bit 💀) Highlights: The Humpty Dance, Doowutchyalike
What in the sci-fi sex drug was that? I did enjoy listening to this though, even if it hasn’t aged too well! Fav songs: The Humpty Dance, Sex Packets (even with the questionable lyrics)
I liked it
Álbum divertido de hip Hop, boa levada funky. QKZxHBB.
Humpty Dance is a classic. Really don't know how to feel about this one, but was bobbing my head to the beats a lot, so three stars? The concept album really coming out in those last few tracks......
Started strong but took a dip. Lots of catchy samples.
Nice to have some hip hop but this was pretty absurd. Wild concept.
I like some of the beats but not my taste overall
The Hendrix sample on “the way we swing” was out of this world. Wow. But the rest of this was tough to listen to. My god did I hate the sex packet stuff at the end
This was fine. I liked it more than a lot of hip-hop. The highlight is definitely the first song, though (The Humpty Dance), Nothing else quite matches the energy or weirdness.
goofy as hell - great samples
A little too strange. The G-funk beats are a bit messy and some of the lyrics/themes are childish and too crass. “The Humpty Dance” is a classic though. 2.5/5 Might listen again
Humpty Dance carries. Production is actually decent throughout. Rhyme schemes are a bit simple by today’s standards, but there’s fun to be had with this. Last few songs drag tho
Ahhh 90’s hip hop is so cool, great backing beats, the vocals are fun and the “oh this is the 3min mark radio stations u can tune out” part is such an earworm haha
This is a really meandering, unfocused mess of New Jack Swing. Humpty Dance slaps as always.
I can sorta dig... Could have used some editing with these 6 minute songs
Not for me
Don't know if I can ever come back to this one, but I had a good time. Title track was surprisingly fun, and should not have been the second to last track.
Ah early '90s rap. With the click tracks, parliament samples and rhymes that didn't take themselves too seriously.
The humpty dance is a party classic that I can still go word for word. The rest is just ok early 90s hip hop. Not great, not bad.
I knew The Humpty Dance (of course) and was also familiar with a few of the Digital Underground's other songs. I tended to find them to be very long songs and this album hasn't changed that. Editing is needed. The funny part is Digital Underground knows the songs are long and even mention when DJ's need to cut the song for time requirements. I guess this music has a place in the book since it's "seriously comedic" rap and is enjoyable to listen to. This is intended to be a concept album about sex packets, yet I may not be smart enough to understand how this thread/concept runs through the whole album. I'm also not sure I would consider this to be a "must-listen" album but there are quite a few standout tracks. Humpty Dance The Way We Swing Rhymin' on the Funk Freaks of the Industry Danger Zone Doowutchyalike Sex Packets
3 - fun 90s hip hop. The sex packet songs got a little too creepy
Lots of lyrics about various locations around the world that have women in them
Doesn't seem very underground lol😆 I hated non-political 90's hip hop/rap in the day, although I did have a soft spot for jazz rap, but 'A Tribe Called Quest' this is not, 'Rhymin on the Funk' was not bad and to be fair I liked a lot of the scratching and sampling. Inspite of really wanting to flat out hate this album there was some head bobbing going on I have to admit.😆 Trying to ignore the misogyny and at times flat out stupid/dumb lyrical content there are some catchy beats, a borderline 3 but probably 2.5⭐⭐⭐
Rather original 90s rap. Good samples. 3.4
Horniest album ever.
I don't like hip-hop but it was quite good.
After seeing the album cover, album name, and the year it came out, I was very much not looking forward to listening to this album. It ended up being better than I expected. The beats were good. It made me want to move my body. The lyrics and the concept were silly and goofy but man these guys were horny. I enjoyed it being on but I can't imagine a scenario where I ever play these guys casually.
Enjoyed it while I was listening but didn't leave much of a lasting impression.
This was a hard one to decifer. So cheesy and corny on one hand, but some cool beats and catchy moments kept me entertained. I don't know if further listens will make me like it more or hate it. 6/10
I recognized The Humpty Dance and liked it, but the whole album is pretty good. This is not a genre I would normally listen to but I would listen to this one again if I was in the mood.
Nice. Sex Packets is very nice track.
Aika average hiphoppia. Konsepti levy ilmeisesti, mutta aika häilyvästi. Kappaleet vähän turhan pitkähköjä. 2pacin alkuperäinen poppoo. Parhaat: The Danger Zone
The Humpty Dance is arguably the worst song on the album! The other tracks are muchhh better. I liked this more than expected.
Terrific fun when Humpty's on the mic, pretty bland when he's not. When Humpty's not around. all the other characters should be asking. "Where's Humpty?"
Nuevamente tenemos disco y artista desconocidos completamente. Leyendo el artículo sobre la banda, veo que contó con el paso de Tupac Shakur, una leyenda del hip hop. Buen disco, ideal para escuchar de fondo y levantar y mantener la onda de una reunión colectiva o íntima. Hasta mañana.
This was ok. Never really been a fan of this band.
Fins bedre rap fra 90-tallet... Meh
Generic corny early 90s rap. I liked it a lot better in the early 90s.
Technical ability alone cannot save this record. On the surface, there’s nothing “wrong” with Sex Packets. The rapping is good, the flows are a bit dated but don’t strike you as stuck in the ‘80s right away, the beats are fun, and the lyrics are sharp. This record can be funny and fun and also sexy and also deep. On paper, there is nothing wrong here. It even has a hit single that’s proven it can stand the test of time, “The Humpty Dance,” and it’s still a lot of fun. But Sex Packets loses a lot of its strengths when it’s put into practice. For one, it is way too long. 14 songs is a long record anyway, regardless whether there’s skits and filler involved or not. That would mostly be tolerable, though. And yes, about half of this is skits, which inherently wastes space and is an issue, but a negligible one. No, the problem is that every song here seems to last an eternity. On the surface, I get it, these are dance records, and you have to keep people on the dance floor. But as hip-hop songs, they never evolve, and most of the time, the longer they go on with filler verse after filler verse, the more they get on my nerves. This is compounded by the fact that the majority of this record has the same bpm, uses similar beats, uses the same flow, and achieves the same vibe. It’s all Parliament-Funkadelic samples, all dance songs with the same flow, and all about hooking up with women. That’s not to say there isn’t some variety with “Gutfest ’89” or “The Danger Zone” bringing some depth to this record, or the smoother flow of the last quarter of the album from “Packet Prelude” to the end, but as a single-sitting, it all flows together to sound like one extended song about partying and hitting on women. The final result is stale. In a sense, the less I know about Digital Underground, the more I like them. If I heard any of these songs on their own– in their extended version or on a radio mix– and I had no further information about who made them, I’d probably say it’s a good song and I want to know more. But back to back to back, it’s all less than the sum of its parts. In the end, “The Humpty Dance” is maybe the most unique song here, and even that sounds very similar to the rest of this record. None of it’s outright bad, but very little here feels uniquely special. There’s so much good hip-hop to listen to, especially from this era, and it feels like a waste to spend energy on a goofy dance record with decent talent that never wows me.
This was a pretty wild trip. I went from bopping along happily, to laughing out loud, to cringing in discomfort, back to bopping (sometimes all on the same track).
cover het jo aaaaarsch usgseh. fick. aber hahaha de beat goht dumm "my name is humpty pronounced wth a umpty" hahahah die sind luuustig. hahaha wiener mitem bass mitmacht haaammer. scheisse uhuere funny. huere laang. the way we swing weird? glaub sehr 1990 verschiedeni hiphop richtige. seged nöd verbally raped alte. aber okay sust slappts no. die songs sind jo EEEEWIG. etz gohts drum zum länder ufzelle? ah ide phillipine hends au gern wie ihr swinged? okay. hahahaha even in cleveland okay jetz ischs wieder lustig. rhymin on the funk macheds mengmol sochli flow-wechsel. super. hahaha etz rededs vo poop. love it. find afoch z lang amel afoch beat. freaks of the industry insaaaane horny. dowitchalike seeehr funny. Typical 80s/90s rap. Plodding and unsophisticated - on the other hand, there's no gratuitous bad language, mysogony, racism, or vuolent braggadocio and that makes a welcome change - so it gets an extra star for that. But I never want to listen to this, or any other rap, ever again..
Kind of overstays it’s welcome after awhile, but I say that knowing I’m listening to this on my phone in my room. All of DU’s songs are basically club records, made to be heard in a club setting, hence why many of these songs sound repetitive. They’re not really meant to be heard in an isolated environment like this, they’re party anthems meant to be heard in a party setting. Naturally it’s not going to resonate as strongly for me. Still, these are some head boppers, cant deny it, especially Gutfest 89.
despite the title having “sex” in it, they should rlly talk about it less bc they’re not very good at it. good beats though
I enjoyed this. Time to go get my Humpty Dance on.
FAVO: The Humpty Dance, Underwater Rimes(remix), Doowutchyalike(eerste 4 minuten), Packet man
pretty cool hippetihoppeti
Joke's on you! I never liked the Humpty Dance. Joke's on us! They went platinum with this record. Not the worst 90s hip hop album either. RIP Shock G for being an indelible part of the 90s even if it wasn't my jam.
It was interesting to listen to because I was pretty much only familiar with the "Humpty Dance" so I imagined the rest of the album would be sort of joke-y. And while there was plenty of humor, it was more balanced.
I gotta be honest: I'm mostly disappointed. This album started off so well! I mean, "The Humpty Dance" is an all-timer, no question about it. It's like a big ol' party — the one where you don't notice that the full thing is six minutes. "Time flies when you're having fun" and all, and this is damn fun. Now, I wanna tell you here that I was actually listening to the **vinyl** version of the track listing, so for me the rest of side one consisted of "The Way We Swing", "Sex Packets" and "Packet Man", alongside the interludes that precede the later two. None of them hit the same high as "The Humpty Dance", but that doesn't stop them from being enjoyable. In particular, "Sex Packets" surprised me with how much it sounds like an André 3000 or Prince song. Especially when that guitar lick hits — for real, it sounds exactly like one of Prince's slow funk sex jams. "Packet Man" keeps things up with the beat, flow and delivery; and although "The Way We Swing" might be the weakest song in this half, I still find it hard to not get into how much these guys are clearly enjoying themselves. Once Side 1 wrapped up, I was all ready to give it a 5 outta 5, or at least a 4. I mean, it's such fun, how could I not, huh? Side 2 was quick to answer how. It consists of every other song on the album, besides "Gutsfest", and, like... I mean, it's not like they guys stopped being goofballs or enjoying themselves. On "Underwater Rimes" one of them does an entire verse in a "M'NYEAH, SEE?" old-timey gangster voice. A stick in the mud wouldn't do that. But... I'unno. The goofiness just feels way too toned down, and it gets really easy to tune a lot of this stuff out. Even when it picks back up on "Doowutchyalike", there's good bits (especially where they briefly fade the song out early for radio stations), but it barely just isn't able to distract from the fact that it's eight minutes. I gotta wonder if this stuff woulda played better if I heard them in the CD order... Or if it woulda meant I just had a lot of "mmrgh, alright" to wade through before I got to the stuff I actually enjoyed. 'Coz once again, what constitutes Side 1 of this album is great; I'd easily listen to it again. And it's not like Side 2 is all that bad, either; just clearly not as good. So... I guess we'll split the difference and give the overall package... A 3.5, I guess? Rounded down to a 3 for the sake of this website. It really feels like a shame, but hey, at least I had the chance to do the hump. Can't front on that.
I’m at a 2.5 that I will barely bump up to a 3 for its competence. This was really damn close to being a 2, though. Obviously, it’s overly horny, it hasn’t aged that well, the instrumentals are sort of one-note, and the flows & rhythm pale in comparison to some of their peers of the time. I can look past all of that for 1990, partially because it’s sort of experimental in its own way, and for as awkward & uncomfortable as the lyrics & delivery are here, I truly cannot say there is a full-on “bad” track, save for “Freaks of the Industry”, which is a really, really egregiously horny track. I did *not* like that one. Besides that, there is some bad (& truly awkwardly explicit) content, sure, but this is a fully competent 65 minutes. It is the fucking longest 65 minutes I have ever heard in my life, compounded by the fact that this so blatantly could’ve been cut down to maybe half of the runtime – dear fucking god, who let them make 8 out of the 14 tracks here last over 5 and a half minutes!? Hell, if you consider 4 of them miniature skits / interludes, there’s only 10 tracks here, and the other 2 go at least 4:24 long, so like… shit, man, this is just a long fucking album. It would be one thing if these were all compelling for the lengths of their tracks, but only a handful of them are – so many of these circle the bases for so long that they lose any and all appeal they had for the first half of their run time. I can’t tell how much of that is trying to fill up CD space, or ego & hubris, considering that the version of this album that was released on cassette is a mind-numbing 81 minutes with 3 extra tracks, and an even longer (and probably even more explicit) version of Gutfest ‘89. How the fuck can you find space for 16 more minutes here?! With all of that said… I think it’s competent enough to remain at a 3, but just barely. If anything, the miniature 5-track arc about the sex packets at the end is what saved this from being a 2; really solid world-building there, and the tracks felt compelling enough throughout (namely “Packet Man”, because “Sex Packets” goes on for like 3 minutes too long). Make no mistake, though; I’m giving this a long, long leash that it probably doesn’t deserve. This will almost certainly fall down to a 2 over time, and I fully expect a barrage of 1s from future people discovering this site. It may or may not deserve it – I do think there’s a lot of solid stuff here, even despite the extremely horny lyrics. It really is just too goddamn long, but when it clicked, it clicked well enough for me, hence the barely bumped 3.
A true to form late 80s / early 90 hip hop record that wouldn't be seen anywhere near this list if it didn't include a) a one-hit-wonder and b) Tupac in his early days. This album has some good beats and is marginally elevated compared to the similar music prevalent at the time. Add to the fact that it exceeds an hour in length without bringing anything to make it seem warranted, an easy 15-minutes could be shaved. 3/5
fun but showing its age
So... I like how they kept the story over the album: Selling "Sex Packets". It was almost like an elaborate advertisement. A bit over-sexualized, but "Freaks of the Industry" was funny.
=the Beatles
I feel like a lot of this album is really ahead of its time in terms of its P-funk aesthetic, but it's a bit hit and miss. Still, there's plenty of great stuff on here, including the once inescapable lead track, which is still a banger.
Humpty Dance and some other catchy ol' hip hop tunes.
I wanted to dislike it more than I did, but it was so ridiculous that I ended up sort of enjoying it. I don't foresee myself returning to this one
I was quite tickled by the humourous tongue in cheek slant.
Weird and funky hip hop
Old skool hip hop with dick jokes.
Some parts are really cringe. Songs are too long, some could just end rather than repeating a chorus or having the rapper outro the song really slowly. Other than the 8 min one for some reason it works quite well with the constant variation. Beats are really good, as this era is probably one of my favourite eras of rap. I really like the bits with the 'piano man', quite random but great. Favourite songs: the way we swing, rhymin' on the funk, the new jazz (one), underwater rimes (remix), doowutchalike, packet man. Overall around 6/10
Honk mimimimi
Fun and creative but nothing mind blowing 3.5*
Insane to have this come behind A Tribe Called Quest's People's Instinctive Travels: two albums from the same year where one still sounds good in 2025 and the other sounds like it's stuck in the House Party movies. The rhymes are good but, as the song says, they're not in any particular order, but hey, they're having fun! It's fine, I guess. They're not bad but every song is too long and so is the album, and if I'm not wearing hammer pants then I'm not really in the mood for this. Cool to hear a something bicep sampled in here, so a 2 generally but bumped to a 3 because even though the samples are too long, they're all great choices.
Sex packets? No, it’s not what Coach Kivette reads off of for his 7th grade health class. It’s digital underground’s debut album. This album fluctuates between strong lyricism + unique production and then sounding extremely outdated and corny. If you squint through the misogyny, fatphobia, and racial stereotyping (and this is a pretty massive “IF”), this album has charm. You don’t have to be a hip hop connoisseur to see how digital underground has influenced modern artists (Kendrick Lamar and Thundercat come to mind as using similar theatrics, 4th wall breaking moments, and samplings from Parliament/Funkadelic). Piano man carries this album. If nothing else, this album impressed me with how willing it was to take creative risks and stand out in an era when rap tended to be serious and political. Spending 7 minutes selling a fictional drug that gives you wet dreams says it all. I made Morgan listen to “Freaks of the Industry” so that she could answer the multiple choice quiz mid-song, and I think her reaction to the song pretty much sums it up, “That was… something. They just don’t paint a picture like that anymore.”
Wasn't expecting much based on the corny title and album cover. The Humpty Dance was a pleasant surprise though, fun beat and hilarious lyrics. Much of the rest of the album was closer to what I was expecting at the outset. The whole sex packet concept is also just weird but not really in a funny or interesting way
★★★½
5 stars for humpty. 2 for everything else.
I Get nostalgic for the time period listening to this, but there is a reason why this type of hiphop was mainly buried in the 90s. 3 stars
"The Humpty Dance" is a classic, and "Doowhutchyalike" isn't far off, but I think it's a big drop-off after that. I guess it's a concept album about some magical condoms or something, which is kind of interesting for 1990 -- It seems like it kind of paved the way for something like Dr. Octagon -- but, a lot of the rapping is pretty basic and old school and that sort of brings it down for me. The P-Funk based beats are generally pretty cool. 3 stars.
Surprisingly funny.
3.5 Madness, but some legitimately catchy parts
Sooo much fun stuff on this album, but also a bunch of unimportant stuff. The MC Blowfish bit in Underwater Rimes is my favorite part of this album.
Čuo sam prije samo the humpty dance
This is a funny little album of highs and lows. At points very tacky, but other times smooth, aged terribly in places but perfectly relevant in others. As an album I kinda don't really like it because of the undulations, but I could certainly pop back to a few of these tracks. Fave Tracks: Underwater Rimes, Gutfest '89, Sex Packets, Packet Man 3.5/5
My exposure to "The Humpty Dance" was through Weird Al, and 7 year old me had no awareness of the context of the source song. Even 30 years later I am still a bit naive. In terms of Rap/HipHop I am more partial to this funky style, but it can be tough to stay paying attention for an hour to follow the stories. Aside from the opening track there were a few others I recognized that were pretty good. The whole sex packet concept is a bit troublesome in today's world but it is silly enough that it probably won't be cancelled or whatever. I'd love to be back in the 90s when things were simple. Will they be as simple if I'm not a pre-teen, who knows. Favorite track "The Danger Zone" 3/5
Non dénué d’humour; vif et mordant dans son propos comme dans ses rythmes
Meh. They don’t do anything that De La Soul didn’t do better. So I mean, it’s funny, catchy stuff, but kinda mid compared to their contemporaries based on what I know. Not a must-listen.
I realized I do not care about the fact it's a concept album. For me, the Packets Prelude / Sex Packets / Street Scene / Packet Man / Packet Reprise medley was just... meh. "Doowutchyalike" was good, but too long. Really, that seemed to be a pattern throughout the album. Good songs, too long. Having one of the most well known songs in the 90s as the first song, it really makes the rest of the album kind of a letdown for me. Top tracks: "The Humpty Dance", "The New Jazz(One)," "Doowutchyalike," "The Way We Swing," "Rhymin' On The Funk"
Ok, I certainly like P-Funk, but man, these songs just go too long almost every time. Decent rapping, good grooves (but too long and repetitive), usually funny lyrics (Freaks of the Industry cracked me up, even if it was totally inappropriate). Favorite tracks: The Humpty Dance (stupid, but catchy), The Way We Swing, Packet Man.
It's pretty fun, got some good beats, but each track could do with 1 or 2 minutes shaving off.
It’s ok - interesting take on hip hop of the era but feels a little corny at times. Humour is dated and over all it feels like a long skit that isn’t very funny - so the novelty wears off with every listen. I don’t hate it but it’s not something I’m interested in seeking again in the future.
Fav song: Gutfest89 Fun production and lyrics that don't take themselves too seriously. I generally prefer this type of stuff to the more aggro sounds of gangster rap.
Mira, el gangsta rap puede ser agobiante, asi que cualquier desvío de ese sub genero que aparezca en esta lista es bienvenido.
Rating: 6/10 Starts off very good, then becomes too committed to the "Sex Packets" concept which was awful lyrically. The production was great though.
It’s a concept album about being really, really horny. I still like The Humpty Dance, but the rest of the whole album does not age well (even compared to only 90s hip-hop).
Enjoyed it for the most part, nice variety but nothing really stuck too much personally
I had no idea that the album with "The Humpty Dance" was actually a speculative fiction concept album about the proliferation of a drug that replicates sexual satisfaction!
I’m beginning to think this Humpty guy fucks. Three stars.
Definitely a little long, but I really enjoyed some of the production and flow
Early 90’s upbeat hip hop sound
A couple nice songs I find it quite odd that there is a story across the songs but it only starts midway through the album
Used to sound great in the ol Caprice!
It's a bold move to make the first album you release a concept album. You aren't a known quantity and the first thing people are going to hear from you is a somewhat offbeat concept album about sex and drugs. I mean, I'm 100% here for it. I'm just surprised that's what Digital Underground chose to do. Anyway. This was a trip, man. Some really cool beats and grooves here. Sometimes I was left wondering if this was included simply for "The Humpty Dance." Because while there are some great tracks here, it does start to sound a little samey as it goes on. The track lengths don't help, either. I don't know. I wanted to love this. 90's hip hop is its own thing. It's on another level in terms of style, content, and attitude. Hip-hop artists back then weren't afraid to be funny or go out on a limb with a crazy or goofy concept like this. But the length really gets me, and I just can't imagine that the album as a whole is really that highly regarded. It's not bad by any means, but it's a three star effort for me. Standout Tracks: The Humpty Dance, Rhymin' on the Funk, Gutfest '89, The Danger Zone
decent
Almost a four. The vibe was just fun until they got to one song where I was sorta skeeved out by how they were talking about women.
Fun P-Funk influenced classic hip-hop that's somewhat soured by many of its tracks running a tad long. 3 stars feels too low, but 4 would feel too high. Pretend this is a 3.5
Good
silly as hell, joyously so. 3.5
Extra star and relisten just for Underwater Rimes
This was fun in a goofy way, but went on way way too long. 3/5 Highlights: The Humpty Dance The Way We Swing Underwater Rimes
Cool beats, stupid lyrics.
fun funk Favorite track: rhymin on the funk other picks: humpty dance, underwater rimes, freaks of the industry
Lol what was that?
classic hip hop
While I appreciate the P-Funk Allstars grooves, and appreciate everything Shock-J did for hip-hop, this just isn't my jam.
This was weird.
Så fed første sang
really wanted to like this a really silly and charming 90s hip-hop album ruined by having songs that are way too long. no song on here has to be 4+ minutes. almost every song on here drags on for wayyy too long
Hip Hop was further than this in 1990.
Surprisingly entertaining, almost a concept album with the ‘packet suite’ towards the end. Quite enjoyed. 3.5 stars.
The Humpty Dance is a staple from my high school years. Not all of the rest of it holds up though.
Fun old school hip-hop with horny lyrics and funky beats. Sounds like there’s a fairly large cast of MCs but they’re all unified by a goofy sense of humor and strong technical rapping. Haha the last few tracks of the album get taken over by the concept of "sex packets," pills that give you visions of having sex. I love that they were so into this idea that they dedicated a mini-suite of songs to it.
Definitely of its time. Kinda fun. Kinda gross.
Like a mix of Will Smith and De La Soul. 6/10
few really good songs but i feel like most songs really didnt need to hit the 6 or 7 minute mark at all. freaks of the industry was a great song but also a bit long. (2.5/5.0)
This album was a bit of a surprise, I knew two songs prior to listening front to back, and they were my least favorite on the album. It was a better album than I expected going into it.
I really liked the first handful of tracks, but then it got a little raunchy for my middle-aged prudish tastes. Still when it wasn't making me uncomfortable I did quite enjoy it.
I dreaded listening to this, but I actually enjoyed it more and more as time went on.
Pretty average hip hop, not my thing
Aiming for high-brow high-concept high-prog rap, but comes off as rambling thoughts of a high stoner. There's the germ of an idea in there somewhere, but it has been stretched gossamer thin.
Thought these guys were a one hit wonder, but the deep cuts on here kinda slap. Fair play digital underground, do ya thang!
Very smooth, classic old-school rap. I enjoyed the rhythms and production, but the lyrical content got pretty repetitive.
While the Humpty Dance is a silly, timeless classic song, the rest of the album feels solidly grounded in 1990.
This app is trolling me. This the day after Stereo MCs. I swear this was planned. Ok I may have overreacted based on the cover. This could actually be fun. Yes there is definitely a Fresh Prince vibe, that cannot be denied. Loads of Clinton. No period of culture has dated more than the early 90s, and this isn't an exception, but it's an enjoyable little bout of nostalgia. Added a couple of tracks, but some was just bad, the title track is sub-Prince rnb which I have no idea why they dragged out for over 7 minutes.
Funky indeed!
Weird
Dated but still enjoyable as background hum.
Quality silliness with some old skool bangers
Some of my favorite samples I’ve ever heard on a hip-hop album!
Sounds quite dated now but Humpty Dance is a banger
The Humpty Dance is what it is, and what it is, is great fun...but dear lord early hip-hop must be one of the worst ageing genres of them all.
A solid, bass booming, old(ish) school style hip hop album with a strange concept executed with great humor and narrative. They generally pull it off well, and I would recommend this to someone who likes this style and is down for something weird, but for me, it just doesn't quite stick. It's definitely memorable, and satisfactory, but not much more than that for me.
I used to love this album cause back in the day there were not many rap albums. Today I find it repetitive and lacking substance. Fun to hear and brought back good memories
Didn't expect to like this as much as I did, however it did go on for a bit too long to the point where it became repetitive
I'm sure they had fun making this. Nothing very interesting in here that Young MC didn't do with better rhymes and without a concept
No really my thing. But, pretty good.
Very generic and samey. 2.5 rounded up.
i appreciate the goofiness and tongue-in-cheekness of it all, but goddamn you cannot make your album this long when you have so little to say
Solid 90's hip hop. Every song feels like 1 minute too long though. Favourite songs: The Humpty Dance, Packet Man Least favourite songs: Freaks of the Industry 3/5
One of the best albums of all time.
Extremely stupid, but sufficiently good-humoured to get away with it. It's got a fair bit of funk to it, and decent instrumentation in places. Once again, it needs some serious quality control and editing on it to take it to a fun-filled 35 minutes, instead of a long, drawn-out 65.
Now, this is a story all about how My life got flipped-turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air In West Philadelphia born and ...
Who doesn't love the Humpty Dance? And everyone always talks about DU like they are brilliant. I've never listened to the whole album. I'm excited to do it. It was good. I wouldn't say great. But I would listen to a few of the songs that I'd never heard before again.
Overall fun album. Enjoyed it more as it went on Standout songs: Rhymin on the Funk The Danger Zone Doowutchyalike
Paaaas mauvais pour du rap, mais ya rien de vraiment spécial EDIT DU FUTUR: JE CHANGE PAS LA NOTE, JE VOULAIS JUSTE DIRE QUE 420 C'EST TROP DRÔLE QUOI
Very dated, but there is a certain level of charm to an early 90s concept album about sci-fi sex pills, if you can get past the extremely misogynistic lyrics.
Favorite Tracks: The Humpty Dance Doowutchyalike Sex Packets
Jolly enough but I wasn't sure if I was meant to be taking this that seriously. Quite fun, and well-produced, but there are other rap albums I would dig out to play before I reached for this. and the sex packets concept did wear a bit thin after a time.
I love the weird concept and the funkiness. And the filth. But the music is a little limited and one note. But it's charming as heck.
