Reviews (page 4 of 7)
I enjoyed it but also I don't feel that it stood out from 90s sound much. I ended up listening to Tupac after this because I think it's the same vibe but I enjoy it more.
Was not too impressed with this, until the line "hugging the curves and dipping like I'm supposed to do for the Underground Troupe, cause I know I'm the poop, steaming hot, stinking up the dance floor"' instant classic in my eyes.
Kind of annoying, some cool parts
3.5 stars, if I could add a half
I have only heard The Humpty Dance from this album, none of the other songs. It's not bad I really like some of the other songs on the album. A good example of hip hop from the late 80's early 90's. I remember they were in the movie Nothing But Trouble, it was pretty funny despite being not the best movie.
Did not age well, but great to hear the oldies.
"And, yes, ladies, I'm really being sincere, 'cause in a 69, my Humpty nose will tickle your rear!" The Humpty Dance is infinitely better than the Ed Lover Dance or the Running Man, the Cabbage Patch, the Worm, the Tootsie Roll or any other corny dance from the '90s. When I was a kid, I really thought Humpty Hump and Shock G were too different people. The '90s was a great time for alter egos ... Humpty Hump (Shock G), Lil' Penny (Penny Hardaway), Slim Shady (Eminem), Makaveli (2Pac), The Diceman (Andrew Dice Clay) and my main man Pee-Wee Herman. Maybe the greatest story I've heard in a while is that John Singleton worked security for "The Pee-wee Herman Show" and got Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne) and Pee-Wee (Paul Reubens) to read his script for "Boyz N The Hood." Crazy story. Anyway, the title of this album has a sneaky double meaning ... and Shock G was a great producer.
If more albums on this list were like this, and not some 60's UK album this list would have been so much better. I say that while also saying this wasn't one of my favorite hip hop albums. It was good, especially because I haven't heard it before, but I've heard better even from that time period. But again, this is the music I was hoping to hear on this list, not some guy who locked himself in Westminster Abbey recording with just a three string lute. I did enjoy how some of these songs were much longer, and less short skit type songs but there were still a few moments.
I know of these guys, they were discussed heavily in the Hip Hop Evolution documentary series on Netflix, particularly Shock G and his "humpty" stuff. I hadn't heard their music until now, but it's mostly great. Old school hip hop to be sure, but almost with a prog bend to it; most of the songs are 6-7 minutes long, and the sound evolves as you listen. That said, I do think the album runs too long overall. I'm fine with a handful of long songs as an album, but I think this was over 80 minutes total. Plus, the overall theme and sex stuff is strange. Aside from "Humpty Dance," which is surely the best track on here, the other sex-related songs are just weird. "Freaks of the Industry," who can really sit through that? The "Sex Packets" concept seemed interesting at first, but then they started talking about simulating 17 year old girls. If you cut out "Freaks" and the whole Sex Packets suite from the back of the album, I think you'd be left with a great album, but then you'd have to rename it. I'll give this three stars - there's enough on here that I'm glad I heard it, but as an album it's weird in a way I don't want to return to. Favorite tracks: Humpty Dance, Rhymin on the Funk, Gutfest 89, Doowutchyalike. Album art: They really went all-in on this sex packets concept, huh? So strange that it doesn't even come through in the music until the end of the album. As far as covers go, it's interesting. Guy holding the technology of a future - apparently a little glowing condom thing that lets you commit crimes with no real victim? I don't know man, it's just odd. 3/5
Album 403 of 1001 Digital Underground - Sex Packets Rating : 3 / 5 Never had a strong knowledge of the Hip Hop scene. Only what I've heard here and there over the years. After hearing quite a bit during this project, Digital Underground is one of my favorites. A bit silly, a bit immature, maybe...but they're having a good time and not encouraging their listeners to act out.. A fun listen. I like Humpty.
fun and quirky album. to me it sounds like a hip hop album filtered through a parliament/funkadelic lens. having said that, some of the songs are WAY too long.
I’ve always liked Humpty Dance and Freaks of the Industry. The rest is alright but a little long.
Sounds great. Not too memorable on first listen. Maybe just my taste.
This is so funny. Are listeners expected to take this seriously. I think it’s so long and corny, but very good. Feels like exactly what they were going for. They’re having fun and it’s infectious, but I certainly don’t think I’ll be listening to this again. 3/5
The music on this album is really solid. However, the lyrics are either irreverent or inane.
Fun album, from a group I’m not familiar with. Gave it two spins worth. Good driving music, but hard to take serious.
Wow, this unlocked nostalgia I haven't felt in a while.. When I think of classic hip-Hop, like the SOUND of classic Hip-Hop, I of course think of Dre's "2001" but I also think of Sex Packets sound. Like literally, I would've never been able to tell you this groups name prior to today, the sound was just engrained into my brain and that is what I have been associating with old school hip hop all my life. Rant over, but damn this was another groovy one. Sure it's dated, sure Hip-Hop as a whole is pretty bleh during this time period, but we get some really innovative sounds here, and I love the multitude of genres here. Hip-Hop to me isn't about who spits the fastest, who looks the coolest, etc. I don't think of dudes like Eminem for this very reason when I think of the classics. Hip-Hop is an art form, and this album is that. Is this something that I would bump every day? Nah, but it is a staple of Hip-Hop and I really enjoy it. The beat selection is absolutely crazy, I don't know if I want to play Mario or Tony Hawk right now. I LOVE the interludes.
DU trying something different which ultimately flops but were at least innovative. The heirs to P Funk sampling before Dre did the same.
Groovy but not something I'd return to
I would have loved this back in sixth grade but I'm not sure it has the staying power of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.
3.5
Most of the rest of the album was better than The Humpty. None if it was exceptional really but it was solid. 3.5
Definitely not without its flaws, but I still enjoy this
Incredibly dated but honestly still catchy and fun. “The Humpty Dance” was played ad nauseam in 1990 with good reason because it rocks. I’m glad to have heard this album. There needs to be more nautical and sci-fi themed rap. Quick movie pitch: Hannibal Burress did a bit on a podcast lovingly making fun of old school rappers and how simple their rhymes were, and I think that two minute bit could be made into a whole movie. Open on our heroes, old school rappers on top of the world selling out clubs just by going, “My name is [rapper] and I’m here to say . . .” and telling people to wear condoms and not to smoke crack. Then a Rakim-like rapper comes along and starts doing internal and multisyllabic rhymes and the old school rappers get made irrelevant overnight. And then other stuff happens. I guess a love interest maybe. Then the old school and new school rappers unite to defeat a common enemy or something. I don’t know. I don’t know how to write screen plays, but you get the idea. Call it “Rhyme of the Century”, cast Hannibal Buress, Chris Rock and Will Ferrell as LL Cool J. Make a million dollars. You’re welcome.
Listened Before? N Pretty good! Everyone of a certain age knows The Humpty Dance, but the extended mix of that and Doowutchalike are pretty good! I love this style of early 90s rap. A more innocent sound. More sex, less murder. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Humpty Dance, Doowutchalike
interesting more chill rap album, not as edgy.
something makes me think these guys like having satisfying sexual experiences decent leg bounce music pretty repetitive tho
The Humpty Dance and Doowutchyalike are the album.
Cooler entspannter Hip Hop mit vielseitigen Songs, gefällt irgendwie
Surprise! Enjoyed the hip hop and sampling!
The beats are actually pretty good! But I don’t think the audience will find Shock G as clever and humorous as he seems to find himself.
Big time funk. Firmly in the 80s for a 1990 result but still some solid hip hop. Highlights: Freaks of the Industry and Doowutchyalike.
I have no about these guys forever but never listened to them. Good early 90s alternative hip-hop.
Rap has seen many evolutions and changes within the last 40 years. And I era that probably doesn’t get talked about much, rightfully so, is the post-80’s/early 90’s rap you hear on an album like this. I’ve had almost exclusively bad experiences with this kind of music. One of my first truly negative reviews was of a hip hop album from this same time period. So I was apprehensive to say the least. But I won’t lie. I was surprised by this album. I could totally understand why someone would scoff at this. This is probably as horny and raunchy as hip hop can get. A concept album (I use that term loosely) about a fake sci-fi sex drug is not an idea everybody can get behind. I’m not even really behind it myself. But I find the creativity charming. Does this maybe sound like Fresh Prince background music? Yeah, a little bit. But some of the sample choices and the production style is actually more creative than I anticipated. I can always appreciate a Hendrix sample, and I was pretty proud for recognizing it on my own when listening to The Way We Swing. The way this blends funk and jazz with its sample is really cool. I think where my issues lie is in the length of the songs. Some of these are just a little longer than they probably need to be. Very few artists are actually capable of creating rap music that can go on for 7 to 8 minutes and not drag on even a little bit. The pacing is off in some places, but I enjoy parts of this because of how goofy and fun it is. I can get down with stuff like that from time to time. Rating: 5/10
LOL these lyrics are sooooo stupid and funny im laughing
Hell yeah, who doesn’t love The Humpty Dance? This album gets a little tiresome towards the end, could have benefited from shorter and/or fewer tracks, but I had fun listening to it.
Enjoyable old school hip hop, even if it definitely overstays its welcome, even in the shorter CD release. Of course “The Humpety Dance” is undeniable. C
Was a bit wary of a Monday morning sex album. Does set an interesting tone for the week and all that. The music was good, clean(ish) lyrics and instrumental to accompany rather than overwhelm.
This one wasn’t for me. Idk I just think the whole pre 2000s rap sound is dated to me and doesn’t click. But I do acknowledge how many folks yearn for that. If I could give it 3.5 I would.
This is the epitome of music I know is good but I associate it so much with stuff my parents listened to that sounded lame as a kid.
The beats are sick as hell and the group is having a great fuckin time. It's totally infatuating! After a few listens I think some of the group's language about "Chinese women" and raping other MC's throws off my jam when I'm really feeling it. Unfortunately this happens in majority of the tracks! Good thing the title track is sick as hell and is so wrapped up in the lore that they seemed to miss any weird bigoted language.
Really enjoyed the beat and music. Need to listen again when I can dance.
rickety raps
Fun, albeit a little more pornographic than expected. And it definitely gave the expectation of being pornographic.
This is a wild one. I love a lot about it. The beats are great, the flows flow. some of the songs are incredible, some are funny Some of the issues, (i feel like a broken record with this but)... i felt like the album was ending at track 9, and it just kept on going. It has no right to last this long. Some of the lyrics have aged poorly, some are just going over the same subjects over and over. I get that the album is about sex, but it goes in to incredible detail about how much its about sex, with blow by blow directions and instructions to the point i'm wondering... surely this should just be a conversation for the people involved, i shouldn't know this much about you. But the stuff about having the big nose in HumptyDumpty was great. not as many skits as usual in these early 90s albums, but still too much of that kind of stuff. get it down to 41 mins and we can all have a good time a 3!
1990 The Humpty Dance. I’m sure this album played at many a fraternity party
90s hip hop
A lot better than I expected. Liked the music.
Klingt witzig
Silly rhyming about sex. Not my thing but I did catch myself dancing throughout the album.
It's still a good time and remains of its time without completely sounding dated. Then again, I've always had a weakness for fat chicks. Maybe that just never goes out of style.
Good beats, classic hip-hop sound, lyrics match the content of the album title and don't match my tastes, seems a bit juvenile, but it sounds like they were having fun rapping (and daydreaming about the things they were wrapping about). I doubt I'd come back to this album... but... there's a chance if the mood is right, so I'll give it a three.
2.72
Better than expected
Some good tracks here, with fun/silly lyrics. They definitely have that sound, but all the tracks have a similar sound, so I was getting bored by the end.
Very 90s Amazing & hilarious
Cf les autres albums de préhistorique-rap, j'ai vraiment plus la force de me répéter.
J'ai écouté cette daube la semaine dernière, et suis bien incapable de vous en toucher deux mots.
I liked this. Sounds very much of its time (1990), but there are some really fun tracks. Probably too much filler though.
6/10 there’s some good stuff here, but I don’t know, I just couldn’t really link up with it I found the concept kinda boring
Good album. I owned the cassette. I don't find that it sticks out a ton more than some others of this style around that time.
dowatchyalike and humpty dance brings this up to a 3 but man, the rest of the album isn't really great at all.
I really wanted to give this a 4 because I love love LOVE The Humpty Dance and Doowutchyalike, but so much of this album sounds just like the other songs. I'm somewhat convinced that Rhymin' On the Funk is just The Humpty Dance with different lyrics. So unfortunately, it's a three for me. RIP Shock G.
Such a weird concept album. Lots of fun, as long as I can look past the casual misogyny of the times. Highlight: Underwater Rhymes
https://youtu.be/oLTN7tsiMN8?si=HKvNYLPEliVhA2bd Dated and dumb for sure but fun and made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed the more funk and r&b grooves and jazz touches. Oddly refreshing, but considering the play time, it didn't quite stay as engaging throughout as I hoped. The tone also seemed to change a little as the album progressed.
Definitely sounds super dated now, but for the time the sampling and lyrics are good. Not an album I'd re-listen to, but I'm glad to have heard it.
One of the classic albums of hip hop and on that verge of being old school and the golden age of the nineties. It is really impressive how many samples, programmed drums, synths and live instruments were combined for these beats. The lyrics and their flowery delivery is not that interesting compared to that. A fun listen but there are more interesting albums of that era.
This is endearing, and a very different sound than other hiphop from aorund this time - NWE and Public Enemy. I did not like Public Enemy because their message was not for me, and this suits more. However, I still can't take it seriously but you're not supposed to. Fresh, but not a repeat listen for me. 6/10
Some good tracks
Anyone know where I can get sex packets asking for a friend
3.7 - I feel deep nostalgia for this era of hip hop when artists were out there trying to make a difference, talking about how cool it is to wear a condom and to “stay in school.” I’m somehow reminded of the “urban”-leaning sitcoms on ABC’s TGIF comedy lineup (e.g., “Hangin’ With Mr. Copper”) that sometimes featured performances by family-friendly rap acts of the day. In addition to the evergreen ironic dance party favorite “Humpty Dance”, this record is crammed with high-energy, giddily goofy jams, including “Underwater Rimes” and “Freaks of the Industry.”
Vulgar and objectifying but at the same time infused with hip hop swagger
The Humpty Dance is pretty great. The rest of the album is very average at best. 3/5
After more than 700 albums, with 61 classified as hip-hop, I thought I had received some old-school examples of the genre, but we can always be surprised by a random album from the 90s. What a decade, huh? It's as classical as something released in 1990 can be.
On the whole, I would say I liked this. Wikipedia calls the genre "golden age hip hop" which I didn't know was a specific genre. I'm not a big fan of hip hop, but this is the type I like. The fictional concept of GSRAs is up my alley. Not an album I'd listen to again, especially as the songs were all so long, but I didn't mind it.
Nice discovery. Not a super fan though.
Nicht ganz so meins
Ah lol so that's where the humpty dance comes from. It's silly
Not my thing and this kind of rap has kinda aged out but still respectable vocal performances and great instrumentals
3+
Enjoyed this more than I expected. Was very confused about the concept of Sex Packets until Packet Man at the end of the album to went into great detail about what a Sex Packet was and wasn't. TLC explained Scrubs in 30sec, you had 7:20 and but felt a separate track was still necessary.
Wasn't sure if this was a p*sstake or not. There was some funk and some ok tunes
I have fond memories of the humpty dance on MTV and at roller rinks and stuff, and I like their more whimsical funk approach in theory, but the songs are way too long - every single one overstays its welcome. Despite being described as a concept album, it seems completely unfocused. Some of the rhymes are clunky and the scratching is kinda lazy. Humpty Dance is the standout track. It's no wonder they started the album off with it. Kept waiting for another track to match it, but it never came. Though I didn't really enjoy the album as a whole, I'll give it a 3 just for the humpty dance and their general weirdness.
Hip hop
One of the albums we must hear which of course features the lyric “I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom”
Porn for the hip hop crowd. These guys are hornier than Hugh Hefner in the 1970s. That said, the beats are smooth, the grooves are cool. But it's overlong and a slight bit dated. OK but not a classic.
Fun rap. I actually didn't know I'd like almost every song better than the Humpty dance. Good stuff 3.6
It starts off fun but then my interest began to wane as it went on. I guess it's a 3.
Nicely funky sampling lots of Funkadelic, and moments of Donna Summer and Chic. Laidback rapping about sex and silliness. Sex Packets is very Prince-like. Enjoyable, but a little silly.
Wel aardig, maar niks aparts
Hilariously dumb but also admittedly fun from Humpty Dance to Underwater Rimes to Doowutchyalike, Shock G and crew bring their carefree, hip hop funky jams. It all wraps up with about 12 mins of rapping about the ridiculous premise of lucid dream sex… initiated by sex packets sold on the streets… Again so dumb but it worked for me. 3.5 stars
80s hip hop just sounds so naive and pleasant in retrospect. This feels like that got halfway through making a concept album about designer drugs and addiction, and then decided to stick a couple of party tunes at the front. It's messy and odd, bit most of the lyrics hold up, and Dowhatchulike and The Humpty Dance are still solid gold bangers. Am I likely to play anything else off here again? Probably not. Still...never looking at a Burger King the same way again.
Some good stuff and quite funny in places. But I felt some of the humor was a bit too cheesy at times, and the songs (and album as a whole) sometimes tended to drag.
It was alright
Why is this here
Fun, rhythmic concept hip-hop/rap album from the early 1990s about G.S.R.A - but it is too long and it sounds dated nowadays.
Party music, covering drug epidemic, and health issues? Rad
Who is Digital Underground? Turns out these guys helped launch 2Pac's career, giving him some of his first credits before a solo career. Unfortunately 2Pac is nowhere to be found on this release, having joined the group on the following EP. Digital Underground is best attributable to core member Shock G, who has the most contributions to this album. He has a clear vision and direction for the group, providing solid funk samples as the group's foundation. While the album's quality is pretty consistent throughout, it's a little too mid-school for my liking and doesn't have enough interesting things going for it to sustain over an hour.
Not bad, as far as rap goes. I tend to like the 80s/90s stuff more anyways.
Funky 90s hip hop
Solid album from these guys
Not bad, couple of fun tunes, nothing warranting a repeat listen
Fun but got a little old by the end.
Fuck, I am such a prude.
Some songs overstayed their welcome.
Weird and wild, but still somehow quite samey the whole way through. A great album of early rap, its just early rap that doesn't quite click with me.
hahaha ok, this wins the prize for best/worst album title in the project. That is fucking woeful, ahaha. "One packet of sex, please!" (It's gonna be cheesy rap/rnb for sure) Yeah ok, no surprises. The "do the dance" first track really set the tone. Dragged on from there. It's complete and utter shit, but I was mildly entertained. 3/5.
Le sample de Hendrix band of gypsies me fait majorer un peu la note. 3.5 mais c'est quand meme léger et le message est un peu ..... parfois...
I started this thinking it was a bit shite, with the basic flow and lyricism that was typical of early hip-hop. However it grew on me more as the album progressed, securing it's place in the higher echelons of a 3
3,5 helt ait
I had only ever listened to the Humpty Dance and just assumed the rest of this album was garbage. I was wrong. I'm not sure it's "iconic" or overly influential, but it's a lot better than I thought it would be. Solid jams from top to bottom.
My friend and I were driving as I put this on and when it started we both said "Hey some old school". Upon checking we learned it was "GoldenAge". Oh well, off to horse riding shaking our heads at our lack of knowledge of hip hop subgenres. This was was fun - juvenile but fun. It kind of reminded me of The Who Sell out with the pseudo talk show format.
I owned this back in the day. I don't play the whole album much, but put the hits onto mixtapes. "Humpty Dance" is a classic. I like the big bass and the lyrics sound reminiscent of Weird Al. I don't mind rappers with a sense of humour. "Doowutchalike", which was released as a single, I think a few months earlier, is also fun. I love the Hendrix sample in song 2 (from "Who Knows", such a great song, wondering if JG still has the album) and the frequent nods to 70s funk. On the minus side there are way too many 6minute + songs, otherwise a 4.
Weird! At first I thought this was a strange choice for the list and thought it middle-of-the-road fun—a very solid hip-hop album and a nice alternative choice but nothing groundbreaking for 1990. But then I found out it was a concept album about “a pharmaceutical substance that comes in a condom-sized package and is developed by the government to provide its users with a satisfying sexual experience in situations where the normal attainment of such experiences would be counter-productive to the mission at hand.” (!?) And then I saw all the P-Funk samples and general dedication the Digital Underground maintains for this wildly unique blend of sci-fi, dance, funk, rap, and absurdity. Something only Oakland boys could come up with. So it’s growing on me as I’m beginning to pick out the samples, comedy, and thematic content of the lyrics. Still surprised to see it on this list. And there are a few lyrical moments that very-much cringe. But a very fine hip-hop—and a great alternative hip-hop—record nonetheless. Honestly, I’m just stoked we got an alt hip-hop album at all! 3/5.
this is pretty hilarious, and got more hilarious the more I listened to it. It's campy, fun, and is a nice counterpoint to the 90's conscious rap we've been getting a lot of. I like that they're just trying to have a good time but also give it some campy backstory. Love my hip hop that's like this. 3/5
A really decent hiphop album with a lot of influence from Clintons P-Funk
That is not a real thing
Uus mulle. Letkee ja ihan toimiva
3,5 Te herbeluisteren
Average
Fun and funny. Good
Get funky. Sex packets is the worst track on this album
I know and love The Humpty Dance, it's such a fun and silly song. The rest of the album is pretty old school hip hop, but hornier. The most fascinating part is I learned it's a concept album about 'sex packets' given out to astronauts so they can get off in space, mostly saved for the last part of the album. I enjoy the more lightheartedness than rap that would follow. I found the songs more repetitive and too long, but the samples and some lyrics are great.
Rude!
Put on your Fresh Prince clothes and get ready for the crazy trip
A lot better than I thought. Songs are a little long though.
Fun!
Fun, creative, catchy, passionate
часто про альбомы девяностых складывается мнение, что они попали в список по какой-то личной ностальгии авторов. ничего особенного не заметила
As a big-nosed heterosexual man, I aspire to novelty song ‘The Humpty Dance’’s titular character’s self-proclaimed sexual magnetism and at my best moments feel his joie de vivre; great and good-humoured song. The rest however, isn’t so fun, the group’s g-funk is better than most but their misogyny is worse-than-average for the genre. Title song ‘Sex Packets’ is awful and overdone nonsense about some fictitious orgasm drug but the shorter ‘Packet Man’ manages to get some humour out of the same nonsense.
Amazing opening
The instrumentals can be repetitive, but the lyrics are usually entertaining.
It's probably a good thing that I don't speak English, I've got a feeling that the lyrics are terrible. The rhymes are basic. Underwater Rimes (Remix) really stands out. Yeah, it gets better after that one, no longer sounds like a freestyle, and the lyrics I'm able to understand are pretty funny. Studymin would approve
pretty d ecent vibes 3.5/5
Digital underground- So funk heavy with all the parliament samples. I think they sample flashlight in at least 3 songs. Love when he sings the bass line on humpty dance. Feels live like a jam or party but the songs all felt a bit too long.
So much more than the Humpty Dance.
I enjoyed listening to more Digital Underground. Fun early hip hop that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Fun listen from the creators of the Humoty Dance.
This was fun, but at the same time, it feels very, very dated.
from the time when rap was witty and well put together and not just angry gangsta noise
I'd heard The Humpty Dance but I don't think anything else. That song is still an absolute classic. The rest of the album is pretty great too. Very fun rap in that classic 90s style.
Some fun tunes on here. Nice grooves. I definitely remember the Humpty Dance video on MTV way back when this first came out.
The Humpty Dance is by far the best song on the album. The rest of the album is pretty good although I do not really have a desire to revisit the entire album. Tupac started here and thankfully had a much better career afterwards.
pretty amusing, with some good rhymes, but also really ridiculous 6/10
5/10. Well, it gets points for being absolutely bizarre, and sometimes even sounding pretty good, but it loses points for having songs that go on for much too long, and also being kind of annoying.
Humpty dance lofaði ekki neinu sérstöku, óeftirminnilegt síðníunda hiphop, en svo vandist þetta ágætlega. Textarnir ansi grafískir en þetta er ekki leiðinlegt.
A little slow or repetitive at time with the songs being so long, but also really fun and hilarious as well. Pretty good flows and rhymes keep it interesting even with some sort of bland production. 6/10
The instrumentals are cool but the raps are eh. The humpty dance is the best track.
Vaguest awareness of this group from the Humpty Dance which was big for a while in my late high school/early college days. I don’t recall noting anything about it at the time except the chorus which seemed repetitive and inane to me. It’s interesting to listen to it again decades later, and with a lot more hip hop listening under my belt, and realize how funny and satirical and self-aware the lyrics are. The whole album is pretty funny actually, and lyrically reminiscent to me of subversive avant-rock material like Beefheart or Zappa. Wrapping up a long album with a 15 minute suite about an alternative reality where there’s a pill that makes you have an intense imaginary sexual experience is an... interesting choice. Overall I liked it, though the minimalist backing and repetitive nature of a lot of he songs left me feeling like it ran longer than it needed to to make its point.
dowhatyalike is oft forgotten, but really offers a solid backing to Humpty Dance, which is a really catchy diddy.
Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.
the humpty dance is shamelessly horny. so is most of the album actually. underwater rimes is such a stupid song. 10/10 shout-out girls with back fat album gets a 3.
Better than I thought but generally not my preference in music
There's something here. The wild plot and creativity can't be denied, but a lot of this just doesn't hit for me. Its a 2.5 and rounding up.
🤣🤣 “The album is a concept album about "G.S.R.A." (Genetic Suppression Relief Antidotes), a... large glowing pill about the size of a quarter, which comes in a condom-sized package and is allegedly developed by the government to provide its intended users such as astronauts with a satisfying sexual experience in situations where the normal attainment of such experiences would be counter-productive to the mission at hand.” 2.5 ish for the music... round up to 3 for the comedy.
Not really my style of hip hop, but extra points for Oakland 3/5
Quite fun
LP
Listened to on 8/11/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: The Humpty Dance I enjoyed this hip hop album way more than I thought I was going to but it didn’t have a clear vibe
Cheesy and funny 90’s rap. Fine to listen to
Old school hip hop, gets pretty goofy at times
I like this album, i can see myself getting into more old school hiphop. Also, Freaks of the industry had me rolling.
The funky basslines on this thing are INSANE Some of the bars on this album are so crazy (i havent decided if its a good thing or bad thing yet) I feel like this album in general didnt age amazingly, it is absolutely a staple of its era, though. You wouldn't see anyone making something like this in 2022 Barely any of the bars that I will remember going forward have aged well at all I can see the influence this album has in later artists such as Del The Funky Homosapien I just dont think this album has aged well, I do like the instrumentals for almost every track though 5/10
Lord, he obsessed with women
Sort of a one track album. Sadly that track is the first one. The iconic Humpty Dance BRINGS IT. The rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to that.
I think the only song on here that will be any good is 'Humpty Dance'. Let's see. Yeah, I think that's it. I do like the production on it - there's some depth to these beats. I'll give this one extra points for being a concept album about a drug that makes astronauts orgasm? And the song Gutfest '89 also gets some extra points for bein' real gross. But that still only adds up to a 3.
As someone who really doesn't like rap, I found this one of the most listenable rap albums I've heard since a long time. Not something I'd actively listen to, but I listened from start to finish without skipping or getting bothered at all. The lyrics I paid attention to were funny.
I thought I would enjoy this, but the songs are just too long. It's still pretty good, but I don't see myself ever going back to it and listening to the entire album again. "The Humpty Dance" is a classic, no doubt. Most songs are really good even, but for some reason all of them are over 5 minutes long (up to 9 minutes). They lose their steam halfway through - "Doowutchyalike" should have really just ended on that fake fade-out gag. Loved the concept of "sex packets". It's like they made a whole album based on some random Family Guy cutaway joke. Also "MC Blowfish"? How the fuck do you come up with that. How do you drag that concept out of your head. I love it.
m’étant endormie au bout de 6 minutes je n’ai malheureusement pas eu l’occasion d’être pleinement en immersion dans la thématique riche de l’album
Bom.
This is dated on the best possible way and I see no future where I would not like to listen to The Way We Sing.
Opet beatovi/instrumental vrhunski, inace nekad dosadno.
Old school hip Hop here, great songs with the positive lyricism of bands of the era. I liked "Sex Packets" and "The Humpty Dance". Slightly misogynistic at times but a good album, of it's era.
I don't really like the lyrics but the beats are pretty good.
Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.
West Coast hip hop. Early 90's. Little funky and Fresh Prince-y. Some funny lines... some weird ones too. My interest lagged off before the last few songs but I'm also feeling kinda off today so that could be me, or the album. Didn't hate it either way.
V experimental. V 90s!
It's like the big payback all over again. Booya!
Morning wood. Pitching a tent. Stimulus package. You’ve heard of mockumentaries, right? Well, I think this is the first mockcept LP I’ve ever heard. Digital Underground describes this as a concept album about a pharmaceutical substance called a Sex Packet that provides a good sexual experience ‘where the normal attainment of such experiences would be counter-productive to the mission at hand.’ Said Sex Packet is featured on the cover, glowing blue, and the final several tracks in particular laud its virtues. Indeed, the majority of rhymes on 'Sex Packets' are a celebration… no, more accurately, a congratulation of the artists’ own sexual prowess. On a couple of the other tracks, we find Digital Underground further boasting on their rapping skills. And finally, on ‘Underwater Rimes,’ they brag about both: rappin’ and humpin’! Look, this is what it is, and ain’t what it ain’t. Its intended as good fun, in the moment. There’s no consideration of the consequences of all this humpin’, nor any significant statements about their experience as African-Americans in 1990. It ain’t Public Enemy or N.W.A, in other words. But hey, there’s a place for that in hip-hop. I can only sustain, for a while, the kind of rapt attention that an artist like Bob Dylan requires. Eventually, I gotta pogo to a little Ramones, too, just for joyful relief. Lyrics aside, this is a funky, funky LP. Loved the music, loved the meter of the rhymin’, all that ‘New Jazz.’ Be great for a party, with the bass a thumpin’, and afterwards when I gets to the humpin’. 3 outta 5. Why not?
Funny rhymes! Thought humpty dance would be the best part but a lot of the other songs were up there too!
I sat in this album for weeks before I listened because I couldn’t imagine the album famous for The Humpty Dance would be particularly good, but it was actually decent. There were some clever rhymes but the general feel was like a knock-off De La Soul. Even if I didn’t think it was GREAT hip hop, it was enjoyable. 3.5/5 stars
The Humpty Dance, Dowhatchalike, etc. Love the raunchiness. Takes me back to middle school dance parties.
This was cool, but a little undercooked for my taste
Some funk, some New Jack sound, love Shock G’s smooth voice/raps—gives me jazz hip hop/alt hip hop feels (a La Digable Planets, Tribe Called Quest, US3 etc). Very listenable—the lyrics/tracks don’t make come back though.
Wow, not my normal kind of listen but interesting and fun to go through nevertheless!
Humpty Hump always seemed like a fun joke song, and to be clear it isn't like DU is taking themselves too seriously here. But it's got some real jams and grooves. This is a fun album that is a lot more than skin deep
foundational but not especially enjoyable
Not really into it but big
Pioneers in their own right
Hip-hop can be corny, too. It wasn’t all gun battles and baby mama drama. (5/10) FT: The Way We Swing
Good beats, terrible lyrics
Fun, eclectic group of songs with a party vibe and a sense of humor. The concept part of the album is ridiculous, but they make it work somehow. Sampling could be more subtle, but hey, I like P-Funk. I'll allow it. Fave Songs: Doowutchyalike, Rhymin' on the Funk, The Danger Zone, The Humpty Dance
Some real bangers in this album, some other songs were like cabbage island.... only okay.
Okay, in one respect, Sex Packets isn't all that impressive. The rhymes and rhythms aren't especially inventive, and since rap and hip hop are generally judged on these elements, that would seem to be a deal breaker. But Sex Packets has a few things in its favor. First, there is the amiable, relaxed quality of the raps. There is no misogyny or homophobia to be found here--this is a party record. On the breakout hit, The Humpty Dance, the subject is putatively sex, but the way these guys approach it, they're just joking around. The raps are reasonably humorous. It's a nice change. The second factor is, freed from the pressure to impress, the raps are fluid and effortless. Finally, and most importantly, the tunes are built on samples from the P-funk library and one Hendrix tune, so the musicianship is excellent by default. Okay, let's not get carried away. This is not a great record by any stretch. I mean, 90% of the music is by other artists, but even if it is good, but Digital Underground uses it in the least imaginative way possible. The lack of ambition, which allows Digital Underground to perform within their abilities, is a two-edged sword. While Sex Packets is a painless listen, it's a shallow one.
Ok but pretty simplistic rhymes and often drawn of songs.
Schon ganz cool…
Remember it
Strong 3 stars. It’s a good blend of hip hop and funk, but I find it very self aggrandizing.
Interesante y fresco
Pretty solid, but kind of overstays its welcome.
Funny, not great hiphop but the lyrics were genius
very catchy bits in some of the songs. had me singing lyrics i didn't even know
Album too long, songs too long. Enjoyable otherwise
Fun. Not sure it's a must listen. Humpty Dance is enjoyable for sure.
Pleasant surprise. Not a fan of title track though...
Ik vond het een stuk minder erg dan ik vooraf gedacht had. Best vrolijke rap eigenlijk.
Did really enjoy it. Some mega bants tunes. Did lose me 3/4 in. So will be revisiting
Humpty Dance is great. Pretty funny album but drags a bit by the end
Fun, classic hiphop
Schon ok
It was alright. Seemed pretty typical late 80s, early 90s rap from what I remember.
This is a throwback to school dances. Gotta admit I’ve only heard Humpty before this listen. The rest of pretty good, funky samples decent rhyming. Considering the era this is pretty darn good. RIP Shock G who just passed.
Bra! Jävligt oldschool, tidsmaskin till 80/90, det va coolt. Bra musiker. Men hela Sex Packets-delen?? Hahah va i helvete hände med texten? Aja, det va coolt, uppskattade att lyssna på det men vet inte om jag kommer lyssna igen.
Interesting album. Clear rap lyrics. Was this an influential album? otherwise can't understand why is this is on this list. It does have the humpty dance on here.
Crude to be sure.
Dope beats, tekst is heel erg jaren '90 - zo onschuldig nog. Vind het verder niet echt een tof album ofzo, heb hem niet afgeluisterd.
Seminal hip hop album. Like most of its ilk though... 15-20 mins too long!
was fun for a few songs but got old really quick
A hip to the hop and the hip hop hippity. Good rhymes but just sounds a little corny
Meh get your big pickle schnauzer out of here.
This album is silly, pronounced with an "illy"
not my thing
RATING: 5.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: The Humpty Dance LOWLIGHT: Gutfest '89
Strangely, for any album that is almost entirely about sex it is incredibly corny. Theres a moment in one if the songs where they talk about having to stop and put a condom on. Which like, yeah let's practice safe sex, but it seems kind of shoe horned into the verse and doesn't really add or say anything. Most of the album is like this. I find it really disappointing because sex is such an easy topic to use word play with, look at Cupcakke, who's lyrics are obscene but incredibly smart and well written. The most i can say is that it's definitely a party, except for the moments where rhe flow kind of stops to talk about condoms. 4/10
Not awful, but I don't get why it's here. Nothing special.
Um its ok. Over rated I think
Kinda surprised this is on the list? The Humpty Dance is iconic of course, but I guess I had assumed Digital Underground didn't do anything else notable. Some pieces are good here, the rapping all throughout is surprisingly competent and the sampling is inspired and tasteful. It's just that some of the tracks simply go on too long for no real reason. Maybe a product of its time. I'm also not really following the "concept" that's supposedly here either. Although I guess the album's title spells it out pretty clearly...Quite the concept...
not my scene
sex n objectification stuff aside it is just really cheesy and dated. Maybe I been spoiled by other projects of this time but this is the kind of artist that has a a song in the background of a live action TMNT movie somehow. It just is bad! I couldn't finish it. Giving a 2 as there were some moments of fun production.
pretty decent beats. only good thing i can say really
Probably the worst bars I've heard in my life, the beats are ok but jesus...
It was kinda fun in a corny, pre-gangster rap hip hop kinda way, but I’m never gonna listen to this again
Very much not a record you need to listen to before you die. There’s some funny moments and clever deliveries buried under a bunch of dated sounds, references, and lyrics. But nothing else to report of here. “Underwater Rimes” was a pretty cool little story. I wish there was more goofy, harmless ideas instead of corny sexualizations of women like “Freaks Of The Industry”. It sounds like the album cover 2/5
Definitivamente sexual. Divertido, musicalmente interesante.
I don't find interesting enough so far. While I think it's well made and well produced, I look for other things in hip hop records usually. The production, while fine, isn't especially exciting except for some points. Couldn't really catch anything very special about the rapping aswell. Kind of middle of the road laid back hip hop album from the 90's. I understand that it supposed to be a classic, but I'm not sure it is for me. Not at all. Can feel the good intentions but it's not for me. Can't give more than a 2 unfortunately
1. The Humpty Dance (★★★☆☆) -Vale más el ritmo que el "canto"... 2. The Way We Swing (★★★☆☆) -Samplea a Hendrix y eso verdaderamente le da el toque... lo demás son negradas, cantos típicos de un negro yankee estimo, que por suerte no entiendo, pero no creo que le sume nada a nada, bien podría ser la instrumental sola y más valdría. 3. Rhytmin' on the Funk (★★☆☆☆) -El ritmo está más o menos, como dos estrellas, y el cantito de los negros resta y resta... 4. The New Jazz (★★⯨☆☆) 5. Underwater Rimes (★★⯨☆☆) 6. Gutfest '89 (★⯨☆☆☆) 7. The Danger Zone (★★☆☆☆) -Dos estrellas a la instrumental y 0 a los negros que hacen ruidos vocales... 8. Freaks of the industry (★⯨☆☆☆) 9. Doowutchyalike (★★☆☆☆) -Se me hizo eterna... 10. Packet Prelude (★★☆☆☆) 11. Sex Packets (★☆☆☆☆) 12. Street Scene (★☆☆☆☆) 13. Packet Man (★★★☆☆) -Tres estrellas por la base, lo demás no lo considero. 14. Packet Reprise (★☆☆☆☆) TOTAL = ★★☆☆☆ (2)
meh
This surely is a concept album with an… interesting concept. I don’t even want to get into the moral implications of the „sex packets“. But man, this thing is musically exhausting. Every single song goes on for way too long. Every interesting idea gets stretched out for WAY too long to the point that it looses any semblance of what made it intriguing in the first place. This was just a disappointing listening experience. There are traces of genius, no question - but they get buried in way too much fluff.
3/10
Load bearing parliament samples. Not unenjoyable but way too long. Funny at times and decent flow but just wears out it’s welcome. The title track is a genuinely interesting sci fi premise!
It was an Ok album. Very 90’s hip hop.
Not my style but I can appreciate the musicianship.
Got "The Predator" by Ice Cube yesterday who dropped his first solo album the same year this came out. It must be said the difference between the two is night and day when it comes to rhymes, flow and production. Cube is one the greatest of course, but this sounds old and bad because it is.
2 out of 5. Something struck me listening to this album: do modern hip hop albums teach their listeners a dance anymore or is that outdated?
boppy fun little vibe. fun to jam to and such a classic 90's feel. the group hip hop sound is always a good time.
5/10
..
Hmm ...some of the lyrics a bit prepubescent .I won't listen again because not minding some of the music is not a recommendation
Sounds very dated and of very little musical importance. Less abrasive than other hip hop.
Rap
Normally a fan of hip hop, but this seems so off the mark of where American hip hop would be at this time, lyrics wouldn’t have been fine today, so a bit cringe, was a chore to finish it
It's fine!
oh I remember some of these. 2
I'm conflicted with this one, I think it was pretty good but then a few of the songs sounded exactly the same as others. Its better than a 2 but not quite a 3 for me.
The early 1990s were full of artists pushing boundaries, often through sexually explicit content and profane lyrics. Albums with the Parental Advisory sticker became irresistible to curious kids, and Sex Packets by Digital Underground was one of those records. Aside from "The Humpty Dance," I was almost completely unfamiliar with the album. There’s no shortage of explicit content here, but the bigger issue is the album’s juvenile, often sexist humor, which frequently reduces women to punchlines and objects of conquest. Beyond the nostalgia hit of “The Humpty Dance,” the record quickly becomes repetitive, with most songs running several minutes longer than they need to. While I would gladly choose this album over many of the other rap albums on the 1001 Albums list that also focus on gats, drugs, and gang violence, I truly expected to enjoy it more than I did. Instead, by the end of its bloated 66-minute runtime, I was a bit exhausted and felt like I needed a shower.
Kinda fun, very misogynistic and the kind of shit British people would have elevated to #1 for 16 weeks.
The concept is maybe the most interesting thing about this album. It was way too long.
Something about this period of hip hop does not click with me.
Audacious reference to 17yo girls
Middle of the road and a bit forgettable.
4/10 - too immature for me, a little bit of fun but I can't even imagine any of these songs in a club
good ols school beats, bad lyrics
pela capa eu tava esperando algo muuuuito pior pqp é só esquisito e datado, muitas vezes cansado, mas não é horrível
I was excited about The New Jazz (one) it's the only track I didn't mind listening to on the album which says more about my own musical taste than what this album is.
The best part of this was the reminder to go listen to Chameleon for the billionth time.
I liked the fish song
Can't say I much enjoyed that.
When I first read it I thought it said Sex Pistols, clicked the link and the humpty dance came on… there was a real cheesy period of rap and this fit right in that. I can get down at times, but only a 2.3 for me.
More dreary hip hop. It’s not terrible to be fair but you don’t need to listen to it.
Definitely dated and not really my cup of tea.
Ahhhhhhh eeeeeeeee I don't know about this one Jim
It's fine I guess. The Humpty Dance is enough of a classic, but my god is the album version long! The rest kinda just blends into the rest of the sort of hip hop of it's time.
Meh (although I liked The Humpty Dance)
Why is every song over 5 minutes long? The Humpty dance was kind of fun, but not fun enough to justify this albums inclusion on the list. Too drawn out and way too much misogyny for me to enjoy.
Every song went on for twice as long as it needed to. It all sounded quite basic.
Pretty goofy and in retrospect uncool rap and hip hop.
Wow. I couldn’t make it through.
Songs were too long for me!
Respectfully… “Gross.”
⭐️⭐️ i already listened to this about a year ago (before using this site to track progress), and i think one listen is enough for the most part. first couple tracks are fun but after that, there's very little worth wasting over an hour of my time to listen to
Niet mijn hiphop
Pretty lame album. Ridiculously repetitive and the dumbest lyrics. Barely makes a 2.
I feel like a nice big bowl of cereal after listening to this album.
As if Frank Zappa produced the most obnoxious rap music ever made …
Meh. It has that old school hip-hop sound that I'm just not crazy about. Although I can see why this may have been both influential and controversial in its day, as it's pretty raunchy and covers some topics that were not this explicitly (pun intended) talked about in 1990. The whole "Sex Packet" suite thing at the end of the album is mildly entertaining, but that's about the only redeeming quality.
“I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom!” This Humpty guy comes on pretty strong. It’s sometimes fun and the beats sound pretty good. It’s also obviously dated and the writing is more jarring as the album goes on. I’d like to be in on the joke and have a laugh with everyone, but man I was grimacing by the end of this. The central concept seems like something a teenager came up with with his friends during a particularly rowdy lunch period. Call me a killjoy, I guess. It’s also burdened by long track times. The 65 minute length would be par for the course for a 90s hip hop album, but the songs themselves are simply too long. I’m rating it higher for the production and influence, but at a certain point I just could not wait for the album to end. Alas I cannot match their freak. Nice and also weird to hear my guys The Who get name-dropped.
Started thinking this could be a 4. Too long and got much worse as the album went on.
Platitude non pertinente.
I like the guy in "The Way We Swing" who sounds like Jimmy Stewart... "The way we schwing" Oh! He comes back as MC Blowfish in "Underwater Rimes" 😂 I'm not sure you can really call this a concept album when the "concept" is only really explored in the last 4 songs.
Underwhelmed and puzzled by a lot of the musical choices made. There are times where this album really clicks, but those moments are drowned in cringey lyrics, dated meta humor, and songs drawn out impossibly long. Maybe this album would have been better to listen to when it first came out, but it comes off as incredibly dated if nothing else. A few gems and a lot of skippable if more popular songs. Top tracks: Underwater Rimes, The Danger Zone
Not a great album. Very 80’s
Ennuyeux et répétitif, c'est pas un excellent moment à passer en 2026. L'album a bien vieilli et ne se laisse pas écouter si facilement. Note : 2 À réécouter : Non
Nah
Cause I know I'm the poop, steaming hot Really funky samples and parts of the album are fun, but the runtime is quite long for no real reason. "Doowutchyalike" even makes a joke about it. 2.5 but can't so 2
The music and rapping is definitely above average for the era, but the relentless and empty sexual content is pretty much incel shit before we exactly knew what to call it. I could have gone as high as 3 stars given the Humpty Dance, but it starts the album and I got beaten down by the end.
Humpty Dance is fun. I didn't really care for the rest
It’s ok if you don’t pay much attention. But it’s also super weird once you notice you shouldn’t “don’t pay much attention”.
Goodness, just raps from some of the horniest dudes on this list. The Humpty Dance is always a fun song, but from there I really wasn't all that interested. Definitely won't be coming back for a second listen of this album.
