Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Found this cringe and boring. Did not like at all. Weird lyrics. Repetitive

Very bland British 80s background music. Not bad, nothing special.

Tedium on a stick.

Another album that kind of sounds like a soundtrack from a cheesy 80s movie. I had never heard of this one and probably won't seek out any of their other stuff. It's not bad. It's not great. It is interesting listening to this kind of thing as a sort of time capsule but there's nothing really notable about this album, I can't remember how any of the songs went the next day. It sounds like any small band in the 80s. 2.5/5 from me, will round to 2 for the sheer forgettability of it. I do, however, appreciate the use of real instruments and the so-bad-it's-actually-kind-of-good album cover.

If you told me this was that this album was a Weird Al-style spoof of 80s music in general and Tears For Fears specifically, I would 100% believe you with absolutely zero hesitation. This whole album screams 80s and feels like a total knock-off of every interesting band from that era. That typically means one of two things: the album was insanely influential, or is just super derivative. The fact that the most noteworthy piece of trivia for this album, the only fun fact that could be scrounged up for the wikipedia page intro, is the album's inclusion on this list tells me that it's likely the latter.

Didn’t think there was anything for me on this album (although admittedly only gave it one listen through without my full attention)

Sounds like early Spandau Ballet with a bad singer to me. It’s not awful, but I wouldn’t call it good. Favorite song: I can’t help myself.

I admittedly wasn't paying full attention to this but as far as I can tell it was very 80s pop with a Morrissey impersonator on vocals. It never made me stop and really listen to it so it can't have been completely awful but it definitely wasn't good, and the few times I tuned in the singing style was over the top to the point of being funny. No need to come back, 1.5.

Alright in the background, quite enjoyed Breakfast Time (I usually do) but no desire to go back.

Not memorable enough to rate higher.

If Orange Juice has a rancid or off flavor, then it's gone bad... Applies to this too.

A good soundtrack for oding in the maccers bathroom

Not my thing

Rip It Up marks a significant departure from Orange Juice's twee debut, signalling a bold movement towards new musical territories. While the album showcases the band's development and experimentation, it requires some effort to fully grasp its direction. However, despite recognising the band's evolution, Rip It Up ventures into a realm of music that may not resonate with all listeners, including myself. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Rip It Up

Sooooooo eighties oh my god

Great music, couldn't stand the singers voice

key didn’t really care for it not my thing but it least it had a tune

Not for me. Good sounds but not cool lyrics.

easy listening 80s brit pop or whatever you'd call this. Either way it was mid

This seems like another inconsequential album that is only on this list due to UK bias. Get it out of here.

Rip It Up? More like Tear It Gently.

This was okay. A few tracks I liked, but the rest were just so-so. 2.5 stars.

Had it on in the background, best it stayed there.

Another "not terrible, just boring" album. I don't see myself listening to this again, or remembering this band tomorrow.

Squelchy at times, jangly at others. Large disco influences, and almost sounds like my bloody valentine at points. Feels just like orange juice, great name.

Amazing album

Meh not for me

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Did not care for this album. Sounded like a wannabe band that was still working things out in the garage.

Wow, that’s a blast from the past. Not familiar with the group, certainly the sound of the 80’s.

I like the music fine but the dudes vocals are Not doing it for me.

Seichter New Wave.

Really didn't enjoy it.

The second early 1980s British new wave album in a row. 1980s sounding which I don't like much but some songs are mellow which are good. Still, the songs sound very generic to me. Nothing terrible but not exciting either or something I'd want to revisit soon.

Started standard eighties, flew down a slippery slope towards cruise ship cover band territory.

Some of it reminded me of 80's Bowie, but we don't need another 80's Bowie, do we?

I think this is the most average sophisti-jangle-pop album I ever listened too.

The person who wrote this book must have grown up in the 80s. Nostalgia has to be the explanation for so many middling albums from this decade making the list. Best track was hokoyo

It has some potential but it ends up just being generic and annoying.

Album #48 in our "lets visit 80s British pop even if they aren't notable, talented, or revered in any way" tour.

lots of 80's cliches that make it lamer than it should. I'm taking 1 star off for that Hokoyo song.

RIP It Up was definitely the best track but I wasn’t so impressed with the rest of the album, maybe 2*

The title song was good but the rest was a meh.

Some fun tracks in there but not all are winners.

overall boring album. 1st song was decent though.

Nice music all playing together. Not really blown away. Don't like singer. 2 stars

Started strong with the opening song that lost interest as time went on.

The orange juice is expired. I like the 80s but this is too dated.

At first I hated it. But the more I listened, the more I found to enjoy. Don’t know the exact history, but you can hear lots of influences in there, I’m sure they’re a cult darling of many future alt bands.

Well, until todays wiki read I didn’t know Edwyn Collins did anything besides A Girl Like You which is a jam. This sounds like a high school band trying to do Elvis Costello covers. 1.8 rounded up

Very 80's new wave punk

Quirky, overly much.

I love Simon Reynold's book on post-punk, titled after this album/song. I get why this album was a breath of fresh air at the time, but I find the "funk" unconvincing. Too, too white boy, really. The African influences, courtesy of the drummer/songwriter Zeke Manyika are much more interesting to me (eg A Million Pleading Faces, Hokoyo, or the percussion breaks on Breakfast Time), and I wish there was a lot more of that. I find Edwyn Collin's voice just a little bit too ironic crooner for my taste. If it was a little bit faster, with a bit more layered percussion, this could have been more like Remain in Light. It has those moments (again, guitar solo on Breakfast Time, which is reminiscent of Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp) which I really like. But then he starts singing again, or they start playing terrible white boy funk.

Sounds like David Byrne doing a Morrissey impression, backed by Chic.

This feels like an album that music people really appreciate, but, I am not this person. Maybe if it appeared later in the list I would give it a higher rating? But it's very 80's, and honestly, forgettable.

I’m just not a fan of the 80s

Just like every typical 80’s album

Tried to listen to this before and it just doesn’t do much for me

Never heard of these guys before. Singles: ------------------------ Rip it Up (UK #8) 2.5 Interesting sounds, I think I might be interested in this after hearing it more.

So many British new wave albums on this list. This one was better than most. Still rubbish. Kinda like a Dollar Store Talking Heads. I prefer their songs where the drummer is on vocals. Very funky.

Hieman tylsää poppis-lällyilyä.

Some good moments, but this was generally boring.

If this isn't the precursor to what would eventually become BritPop nonsense I don't know what is. This was just ok, pretty dated with horrid, nonserious singing. 4/10.

Nice enough but not for me

“Rip it Up” is a pretty lame song to build an album around, even though the opening synth “bass-line” is promising, and cutting edge, apparently. They make other desperate attempts at pop hits, “I Can't Myself” being the most obvious. Edwin Collin's voice is thin and difficult to listen to. If you were to fast forward thirteen years, the deep voice he puts forward in “I never met a girl like you” is much more palatable. Now that was a song worthy of building an album around.

I agree with one of my esteemed co judges that Edward Collins' later material, eg A girl like you is far superior. But the title track here is a nice catchy number that was cute back in the day. I also hear a lot of Haircut 100 influences here. Once again the authors' Brit roots are showing as there are many more other albums that are far more worthy of inclusion.

'80s British new wave. Complete with a terrible band name, synths, and annoying vocals. What else would I expect but crap lol.

When they started singing, I thought, "Oh god no." There's that whiney, alternative 80s voice that drives me bonkers. It wasn't all like that, but a lot of it was.

Errr not heard of before, i now know why.

I felt this was tedious. Not my bag at all. Standard four four drums and guitar and nothing to make it stand out to me. I imagine there a better band to see live in a dingy cellar club, but I wasn't there at the time. Maybe I'd have loved it.

Always thought that I'd like Orange Juice because of Edwyn Collins, but every time I try them I think, meh! I prefer apple juice anyway.

I don’t know how I feel about this. I think some of the songs were a little weird but not “offensive.” No large opinion on this one.

Edwyn Collins tries so hard to sound like David Bowie. He doesn't have the master's chops. It's not terrible but it never rises above mediocrity.

Dracula’s moonlighting 80s Jamaican band.

I was expecting something more.

Los conozco más por las camisetas de Morrissey y los que siguieron esa moda que por ellos mismos en sí. Tienen un aire entre XTC y Aztec Camera que no suena mal pero tampoco es que sea algo memorable. La canción prinicipal merece la pena "Rip it up". De lo que recordaba de haber oído no tenía recuerdo de ese tono "africano" de algunos temas. Esto son 2 estrellas y ya.

Very 80s

À la fin des J.O le judo range

Started with a higher rating, but it got lower as the album progressed. This isn't really an album album.

Sadly, beyond the CHIC influence, this one did little for me.

Hmm , love the upbeat positive nature - hate the main singers voice; seems like the type of posh twat you'd find at a party claiming he was slumming it by hanging out with you. Second tune switches it up a bit with African sensibilities however same criticism in that great upbeat music but don't get on with the singer. Overall 2

I have never heard of this album or band. Unlike the Age of the Understatement by Last shadow puppets, this did not impress on the same level. First off I like the rhythm section. The drummer is really good with his world music polyrhythmic style. His song is easily my favorite. On to the lead singer, Edwyn Collins. If that name sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because he had a hit songs in the 90s called “A girl like you”. I just can’t get into his voice on this album. His voice just doesn’t gel with the music. This is the first album so far that leaves me pretty underwhelmed.

Nog nooit van deze band gehoord en ga 'm ook weer gauw vergeten.

Op zich wel vrolijkisch...

I can see why some listeners could relate a couple of those tracks to the way Talking Heads used some funk or afrobeat influences on their own records around the same time, but I don't think Orange Juice hit the mark the way the 'Heads did. It's not bad, instrumentation-wise. But maybe the songs, hooks and choruses are still a little too lackluster to seal the deal. And, consequently, the end result comes off as cheesy, instead of arty. Besides, you need a lead singer with charisma and idiosyncratic skills to make it work. And whoever this lead singer is on such and such song, he is not exactly David Byrne. There are a lot of commonalities, with an emphasis on overaffected tricks. But Collins (and Ross) lack(s) the spark of genius and sheer craziness Byrne had. Number of albums left to review: 639 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 181 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 84 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 103 (including this one)

very 80s

This sounds dated, I wanted to like it but I can't get there!

What a name Orange Juice is. Started well, then bored me after bit.

Decent start. Opening song I have saved for future listens. I really didn't know whether to put this as a 2 or 3 so I am going for a strong 2. It sounded unique at first but did sort of blend into one in the final 3rd. Still good though

eh, it was fine

Totally new to me. I can see how this would've been a really unique synthesis of influences and sound at the time, but since then, others have done it better.

Quirky 80s post punk with lots of energy. Bounces along nicely enough with funky baselines and discoesque guitar in places. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Date listened: 03/11/22

Less palatable version of The Clash.

Meh. It was fine. 2-3 stars. I see it as a cross between some rock and jazz but didnt do anything for me.

Uneven might be the best adjective. Always a fan of the title track, it takes me back to 1982 UK, but some of what follows is fun and other tracks just seem like rambling muses on various subjects.

this is the most 80s thing i have ever heard.

Just okay

Sterile, which for a surgical theate would be a good thing, but this is supposedly music, not a medical facility. It is clearly a reaction to the anarchy of Punk, but it has absolutely no emotional content.

Didn’t love it 2/5

Not sure why this is on the list to be honest. Seemed like it was filler.

Unremarkable

2/5 best - rip it up worst - breakfast time

Was quite excited for this one as I knew at least one song, butt actually found it quite dull. Sorry.

Best Song: A Million Pleading Faces. Funky, dancey, beautifully layered vocals... I can get behind this. Worst Song: Mud in your Eyes. Whiplash from how awful the vibe and vocals are here relative to the dance bomb of the previous track. This song never had a chance. Overall: If the whole album was composed of those upbeat dance numbers, I'd have instantly loved it. Unfortunately, the fun songs are the minority here, poking out of an otherwise stock-standard set of predictable 80s rock.

This album sounds like paint drying

Not a fan

kind of a col mix of Bowie and Talking Heads. Breakfast Time sucks. Yea I am not into this by Flesh Of My Flesh.

Started strong with the title track, but they lost me in the back half with the 80s sax

What even is this? It's like Talking Heads but with less whimsy?

Some interesting variations on the eighties pop sound, but let's be realistic: it's yet another obscure participant in this curated list.

Typical 80’s was ok

Rip it Up was a very catchy beat. In fact all the songs have a great toe tapping essence to them. Hokoyo was fun too!

While the beats were fun to listen to, the minute the singer started going I skipped. Did not like his voice and it made the songs hard to hear.

Yet another float in the parade of '80s alt rock bands, leaving not much of an impression. The album opened and closed with great tracks, but everything in between those bookends ran together. Makes me think of those Mad Magazine pictures where you fold to make the ends meet and skip what's in the middle to make a new picture. I'd rather do that than rip it up. Favorite tracks: Rip It Up, Tenterhook. Album art: Very precocious band photo. Very cool if this band did in fact have a black drummer. Album art isn't very memorable though. 2.5/5

Interesting mix of white boy groove and african stuff - must have been very interesting in the early 80s. Nothing to get too excited about though

C'est fou ce que ça me fait penser à du Bowie des années 80 et même un peu fin 70.

Les guitares sont intéressantes, particulièrement le solo à la fin de Breakfast Time. Par contre pas fans des éléments disco et du son du drum.

New wave is just not my jam. I did wonder why Edwyn Collins (A Girl Like You) was stuck in my head and then I read that he is the vocalist and it made sense. He has a very distinct way of singing that really doesn't work for me. The best track was A Million Pleading Faces which sounded nothing like the rest of the album. One extra star for the drums and flugelhorn (you don't hear a lot of flugelhorn in pop music).

This album sounds like the soundtrack to a 1980s nerds coming of age spoof film. I’ve never quite heard anything like this. It wasn’t overly offensive, but it certainly wasn’t good either. The only appeal, which is the slightest amount, is in observing how weird it could get.

I trip up trying to work out where this album fits, a fair bit of Bowie influence I reckon. A weird and forgettable

What IS this Morrissey splatfunk goofiness?! How'd THIS ONE make the list????

Here I thought I knew reasonably everything about 80’s British white new wave ska. There’s already UB40 and Fine Young Cannibals, etc. covering that blursed niche. Taken on its own merit this record is inoffensive and wholesome, but if I focus and think about it at all it’s nauseating.

Cansativo, não empolga como punk e o nem com a pegada de ska.

Boring

Rip It Up by Orange Juice (1982) More British yawn pop, this time from Scotland (not generally known for the export of orange juice), this album is so-so, if kinda cute. Squeezable, even. With all the pulp filtered out.  Our thirst is quenched by cool and splashy dance beats, dripping with lively bass lines and quirky guitar effects, with fay lead vocal stylings and harmonies stirred in. Musically, it’s altogether goofy, but with plenty of variety. Perfect for a teen party with nothing serious going on.  The leading title track is really the only song of note. The one attempt at social/cultural engagement “See How Hard They Cry” is spoiled by the frolicsome mood and silly effects. The same incommensurability applies for every attempt on this record to treat serious themes.  Listening to guys in their mid-twenties singing “How I wish I was young again” (“Breakfast Time”) is adorable. They’re so precious at that age.  What this album needs is citric acid: less sweet, more tart. And maybe a shot of vodka.  2/5

Never heard of Orange Juice before, though I did know Edwyn Collins. There are a few nice tracks, but I don't think I'll be listening to this again soon.

I love Simon Reynold's book on post-punk, titled after this album/song. I get why this album was a breath of fresh air at the time, but I find the "funk" unconvincing. Tooo, too white boy, really. the African influences, courtesy of the drummer/songwriter Zeke Manyika are much more interesting to me (eg A Million Pleaading Faces, or the percussion breaks on breakfast Time), and I wish there was a lot more of that. I find Edwyn Collin's voice just a little bit too ironic crooner for my taste. If it was a little bit faster, a bit more layered percussion, this could have been more like Remain in Light. It has those moments (again, guitar solo on Breakfast Time, which is like Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp) which I really like. But then he starts singing again, or they start playing terrible white boy funk.

Some catchy moments, but ultimately just inoffensive background music. Songs go on for way too long. Definitely not something I'd listen to again.

Mezcla de pop ochentero con toques reggae. Fácil de escuchar, aunque no especialmente llamativo

Went in blind here. Read a few of the reviews in advance and got a bit excited with some of The Clash comparisons. The first song really threw me off as it was a bit too “80’s pop” for me. It got a bit more interesting but never really caught on to the level of potential I had been hoping for. Damn. Fave songs “I can’t help myself”

meh. 2 or 3. striaght white boys.

A lot of comparisons to the Smiths and Talking Heads without ever holding a candle to either. Some songs fare better than others, but the album suffers as a whole for not having much to offer in the way of genuinely good music. The best songs are when Zeke Manyika has a hand in things, which is unfortunately few. The rest, I can leave.

Rediscovering this is like finding a crusty old jizz tissue in the pocket of an old coat.

- somewhat boring, downtempo chill ish - pre-new wave... just wave? - Consistent and good enough mix

Never heard of this band. Their vocals are not for me, and I did my best to hear past them to avoid giving this 1 star. Ultimately settling on 2/5 because, at times, the music was pretty fun.

Not a fan, reminds me of Morrissey.

Scottish pop/electro band who's only Top 40 hit, "Rip It Up" was the first hit to use the Roland TB-303 synthesizer. Lots of electro synth beats, with some sax and horns thrown in. At times could hear some Franz Ferdinand. Best: Rip It Up Worst: Hokoyo

Pretty awful. Had one or two decent tracks that redeemed it a bit.

Kindnof a one hit wonder. Their synth alternative music fuses together a few different styles and it's a bit of a weird listen. Not my favorite, but worth a listen

If this album actually were a glass of Orange Juice it would be the cheap stuff made from concentrate. Lacks real substance and ultimately not satisfying

Two great tracks = ⭐⭐ review.

All forgotten the moment it finished - fine but forgettable

This album started with a John Jensen style wonder goal with a classic tune, but then as Arsenal found out, it was all a little too good to be true as it faded into a bit of a nothing and, not unlke the Danish player, ultimately a bit of a let down.

First track sounds like a weird/slow version of 'Good Times' by Chic without the cool bassline. Overall, it was all just a bit "nice". 5/10 ⚽ Euro player: Johan Cruyff. Played in orange and definitely ripped it up.

_Rip It Up_ by Orange Juice - (I keep on forgetting to make my music player not fucking shuffle the fucking thing! It's really hard to get an idea of an album released pre-CD era when it's randomly playing tracks.) So it's 80's post-punk...crooner music? It's weird. The first song was...interesting. The second song's lyrics didn't seem to energy and upbeat quality of the music- badabada, badabada, _see the tears in a million faces_ whaaaaaaaat? The rest of the album liked to bounce around in the same manner, where you never knew what you were going to get. I wondered if any of the band went on to be part of some other bands, but they never did. Why isn’t The English Beat on this list?

Rick Astley? Is that you?... Are they a mix between Squeeze and Pulp? I'm happy that they have a song called Breakfast Time. Other than that, nothing too much to consume here.

Vergesslich

Very rough sounding hall and Oates, weird voice strains, very repetitive no saves

I don't know if they invented a bunch of things or they sound like some weird amalgamation of a variety of 80's bands. Unfortunately they don't sound as good as a lot of their peers... maybe a mediocre Style Council.

I lived through 1980s synth-pop. Why not Duran Duran or Flock of Seagulls? Ugh

Some interesting notes here and there but nothing special going on with this one. Listening to it once was enough for me

It's okay, but I'm not sure why it's included on the list. Seems very average, and the singles aren't really doing much for me. Unlike even a band like Korn, which at the very least was a major point for a genre, I'm not sure the significance of this one.

Boring, not for me

Meh...

Not my jam

I guess some time it was a hit but now it lacks standing out quality that differentiates it from similar albums. Its not bad music but not exceptional

Reminds me of the talking heads but without the talent

Instrumentaali oli vekkulia, mut laulu pudotti pisteitä. Ei jotenki lähteny

It's rare that I'm this blunt on an album from this list, but my goodness is this awful! Not a single redeeming thing about it. The vocals are painful to listen to, most of it comes together like a sloppy hot mess. Just terrible, dated, corny trash...

that is baaaaaaaaaaaaad 1.0

Fav: Hokoyo L: I Can’t Help Myself 1 The whole album kept hitting an exposed nerve or something. I think it’s probably all in the execution though. The vocals in this are killing me and everything wasn’t put together quite right. It has cool musical ideas but they’re just put together or assembled incorrectly. If this got played regularly in public Orange Juice might make my list of enemies. I feel ukind of bad about this low of a score but I got to be honest. In places it does almost wrap around to being so bad it’s good but it’s not quite there for me.

Hated it. Not my style.

We need to forcibly liberate the british isles... 1.5/5

These guys having more than one album on this list is inexcusable. Really, really not essential. Keep in mind that I love all the 80s kitsch, from New Wave, New Romanticism, Goth, Post Punk, Synth Pop, Techno Pop, Industrial, standard Pop, and all of the dance forms. This album by Orange Juice, no matter how you frame it, was simply irrelevant. These ideas were done way more justice by many other bands in the 80s. Every tune is way too slow. The vocalist is not expressive. Take this off the list and replace it with Phil Collins' NO JACKET REQUIRED or Journey's FRONTIERS. Or The Proclaimers SUNSHINE ON LEITH. Most tolerable track: "Mud In Your Eye"

Rip it Up is a good song, as the album goes it tries your patience; Breakfast Time is stupid? The second half gets slow and ironic (e.g. Louise Louise)

Boring British rock with one hit song in the UK lnly like every other album on here.

Makes me want to go out and buy every copy of 1001 Albums You Must Hear... simply so I can Rip It Up

this list is making me actively hostile toward the idea of listening to new music. this was a 2 until breakfast time, which was sonically ROTTEN. the musical equivalent of mixing orange juice with toothpaste. just eat your stupid beans on toast or whatever and leave me out of it!

Room temperature Council Pop

This guy's voice is worse than Morrissey's, and the music is derivative.

Sortir ça après trois (TROIS) albums de Talking Heads, faut quand même vraiment pas avoir honte. Et puis Hokoyo c'est lunaire aussi. Cet album n'a rien à faire dans cette liste. Playlist pick : Rip It Up

Why is this artist even on this list when other more deserving artists are absent. Here is a short truncated alphabetical list of suggestions instead of this hackney group - “Bananarama, The Bangles, Berlin, Big Audio Dynamite, Boomtown Rats, Thomas Dolby, INXS, etc”

This is fuckin wack

Fuck off

Another album, that had a single track worth listening to. That one song was just ok not worth the "must listen to before you die" classification, and when you take the album as a whole it's pathetic and completely forgettable.

hate that awkward 80s shit

Что-то странное, среднее между The Smiths и Talking Heads. Но совершенно не цепляет в отличие от.

UK critics overestimating the importance of New Wave again. The only thing I want to rip up is this page in the book. Please stop serving me new wave albums.

Might not be so bad if the singer's voice wasn't so goddamn awful.

Oh no way, another obscure Scottish band from the early 80s I’ve never heard of?? I’m sure this time they will be a hidden treasure! [listens to album] Nope, 🍊🥤🟰💩❗️ No business being on the list. 1⭐️

Just pure, distilled 80s music. Synthy horns and saxophone, basic drums and beats, and the singing sounds like a parody of someone doing Talking Heads. My previous album was Elastica's Elastica, where I praised the brief, bite-sized songs. This is the opposite, all these songs are much, much too long and tread water for the last halves of their runtimes. I would have given this 2 stars but it is so obnoxious and takes up so much more time (in my life) and space (on this list) than it needs to (i.e. any at all) that 1 star is all I can give.

Came across as an easy listening reggae album and did nothing for me

I don’t know what I just listened to. 😭😭

dance jammy, but felt all over the place and just didn’t work for me

This album should've stayed in the 80s.

you’d think i might like this but i don’t

Oh what’s this? Another one hit wonder group from the UK? No way I can’t believe it! Like someone else here said, there’s no Tool on the list but there’s like 100 of these. The list is shite (this was album 215 for me). 1 star - terrible vocals. And no, I didn’t need to hear this before I die.

Pretty shit stuff

Not my jam AT ALL. If we’re being honest, I skimmed through the back half because I couldn’t do it anymore.

Here’s my ranking of OJs: 1. The drink (big gap) 2. This band 3. Simpson

Not for me. Hate the vocals

Strange band from the 80’s . No big hits hits.

El estilo del disco es bastante caótico. Inclasificable, in a bad way. Teniendo en cuenta la falta de representación femenina que hay en esta lista y que se hayan colado cosas tan prescindibles como esta, me cabrea bastante la verdad.

the bias of this list is so evident with this album

this 80's synth shit by ambiguous garage band "never was'" is getting tiresome. this is not something i needed to hear. i've heard it 10 times already 10 days in a row with the same horseshit sounding bands. fuck you

Only let this finish because I was too busy to change the album.

Not my cup of tea.

Didn’t vibe with this. At times it sounded like uninspired David Bowie, but just one note and boring throughout

Wow this sucks

2 - TERRIBLE

Not my thing

You have got to be kidding me. This lame ass super dated sounding album made the list of must hear albums! Why? There is absolutely nothing special about this album. It’s not offensive necessarily it’s just lame and the vocal styling is so bad. It’s probably a 2 for me but it’s irritating me so much that something like this is on here meanwhile no Louis Armstrong for instance. WTF!

No me ha llamado la atención nada

80s junk, why is this on here?

Garbo...

After 2 songs in, I was done. Some 80s sounding garbo, not for me.

Eh not for me. 1.3/10

Never heard of these guys before today. The title track is catchy, but not life changing. Gave the album a cursory listening, nothing else really stood out.

Sorry but no thank you

This album isn't juicy at all. It's like I left the bottle in the fridge five months after the expiration date and was given this. There's a strong urge to abandon this album, but I pushed through. Just needed to take an 8-hour break once I reached Hokoyo.

This was more like Lemon Juice, very sour tasting album!

This album should have been forgotten in the discount bin. Nothing redeemable. Sounded like it would never be popular anywhere

No idea how this album made it into the top 1000. Very uninspired.

New Wave blather

The instrumental parts of this album give me a ton of hope that I would enjoy this. The guitar and drum playing specifically feel like precursors to the kind of music that I actually enjoy listening to now. But the singing sucks. It sucks so much. It takes away any possible joy I would get from listening to this. The mouth of the singer opens up, and any good thoughts I had about the album immediately disappear. I wish I could scrub the sound of the singer out of my head. Without the singer, this is *at least* a 3 for me. Probably higher. With the singer... SKIP. Favorite Song(s): -

Title track is really good, but I knew that already. The rest of the album is painfully mid though. The only interesting thing about them is that they're Scottish

Interesting, never thought they would turn up in the list of 1001 albums. Of course, I was very well familiar with their hit Rip it up, but other than that, never took or had the desire to listen to anything more of this band. After listening to the whole record I just can say my prejudice was justified. Talking Heads meets Culture Club or worse. No idea how this album ended up in this list, nor why Wikipedia labels this as "post-punk". It's utterly 80's rubbish. 1/5

Can't stand the vocals, forgive me

New Wave music sucks. As bad as the first song was, the hit off the album, the second one is worse. The album sounds like the soundtrack to John Cusak's 80s movies...all of them. Oh my god, this is awful. This is like an 80s Bowie cover band that decided to play originals. Every song, somehow, keeps getting worse. I will give this album credit for being actual music and a normal length. Those are all the "nice" things I can say about it though. A truly terrible album. And now the drummer gets in on the act with a song in a foreign language. This is the United Colors of Benetton of bands.

Rip It Up

Didn’t like this album.

This project has made me realize that there is a certain lilting vocal style used by some male artists (mostly British) that I just can't stand. This album has it in spades. The music behind it doesn't help the situation at all. Oh wait.... this is that guy who had that one song back in the Nineties that was kinda on the radio a bunch for a couple of months? Doesn't matter. Still sucks.

Premiere fois que j'hesite a skip l'album, trop nul, zero proposition

Robert Dimery must owe these guys money.

Rip this up

Irritating

Not good, not essential. Doesn't belong on this list.

Every now and again someone comes up with a cool riff then they decide enough of that nonsense.

I did not enjoy this.

Not very into this.

I was in high school when this came out and don't remember it but maybe I blocked it out because it's not good. There's some positive elements but it is extremely dated Sounds like a couple guys who want to be New Order playing The Beat's music poorly

Not the vibe I was expecting from the song title. Rip it up? More like "gently separate one side of the paper from the other being careful to not make a level of noise that would disturb anyone else." I get that this band was trying to be cutesy, but there's nothing cutesy about its cliche-ridden stabs at lyricism. I can see how this act was a precursor of sorts to Belle & Sebastian, but that doesn't make me like them any more.

A couple of almost catchy tunes, but this is by-and-large tripe. A very long 40 minutes.

Pour out the Juice because it has gone bad.

Just no. The instrument were meh but the vocals were awful. Nothing that I particularly liked here. Can’t even pick a stand out song

Scottish Post-Punk is just another way to say UK Britpop, which this list is sorely lacking. Because, why have albums from actual influential post-punk bands when you can cram an utterly unforgettable album from a band whose Wikipedia page can fit on a matchbook? 1/5

The Manyika tracks are the highlight for me. The rest is crazy bland and boring.

Horrendously boring. I turned it off 40 seconds in before I knew what I was doing because I knew instinctively that this was just not my jam. Who decides these albums and why do they like Morrissey so much? The Funko Pops of post-punk. The guitar was the standout of it all. Loved what they were doing. Some neat bass lines every now and again (including yes, the early TB303 usage). The vocalist did it no favours. Drummer sounded like they learned how to play while recording.

I feel like I'm never cool enough to "get" bands like this. Not my thing.

Awful drivel

My ex wife liked this lot so what do you expect? 1/5 24/11/24

My favorite thing about this album was not listening to it any longer. Collins’s voice was badly used, the song craft was middling, and the pop-drivel was so beneath reasonable standards.

This is pretty bad. I agree with the guy who complained about the lack of Tool and I don't even like Tool.

I'm learning that I hate 80s post-punk/new wave.

Rip up this album, it's trash. High 1.

This album takes everything I hated about the 1980s, distils it down into its purest form, then vomits it out over ten appalling tracks. One of the worst albums I've ever heard and fully deserving of a 1 star rating.

Gack. I didn't know English bands could do yacht rock. I couldn't get past abbreviated attempts with the first few cuts. A band called Orange Juice should not do a song called Breakfast Time.

This shit is terrible. Big no from me.

Only added Louise Louise to the playlist, wasn’t great. Not for me.

1. rip it up - 1 2. facez - 0 3. mud - 1 4. turn auuay - 0 5. breakfazt - 1.5 6. help - 0 7. flezh - 1 8. louize - 0 9. hokoyo - 1 10. hook - 1.5

Early 80s dumpster fire. Hated it. Hated everything about it lol. Anyone who thinks this is good music should consider refraining from opining on anything. <3

Why is there so much god damn New Wave and Post Punk on this list!? Highlights: Rip It Up

Too 80s, didn't enjoy it at all. To much sax and synth... also too reminiscent of the talking heads sound in parts. Recognised the title track, but can't say it does much for me. Not for me. 1.5

Not completely awful, but not good. It wasn't cohesive, and, as per usual, I found the vocals and lyrics very lacking.

First listen Saved 0/10

This album is the worst of the overly synthesized 80's music. Being 1982 hell maybe they invented the sound, but It was like being Rick Rolled for 45 minutes.

Not really a fan of this one. 1.5/5

Super weird

This sucks, music has improved considerably over the last 40 years if this was ever popular.

Couldn’t do it. Made it through a couple songs and had to stop

Expired!

Lo-Fi Punk but also like Beach Boy California Pop Rock. Not great.

Boring.

kinda boring hate the tone of the singer

They should’ve limited it to 1000 albums

Garbage

This is an excellent album. At least if you want to demonstrate what is wrong with polished, inoffensive and boring New Wave from the 1980s. What's not to dislike on this album? It's not very long, I guess. I have no idea how it got to be on this list as even the critics (at the time and in retrospect) consider it mediocre.

Did not enjoy anything on here.

1/5 Best: Rip It Up Worst: Louise Louise

Vapid.

Really bad

Mostly pretty dull, not sure why this is on the list.

Seriously. What the hell is this? Total garage.
