Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Heard Before? Yes. I've tried and failed multiple times to go through the whole Zappa discography. Notes: - "Peaches en Regalia" is still my top favorite Zappa song. It's got almost everything I like about him (endlessly clever composition, counter-intuitive hooks, horns, synths, acrobatic basslines, powerful drums) and nothing I hate (unfunny lyrics, stupid dialogue, meandering too-long solos, jokey genre-parody). - "Little Umbrellas" is a gem. I could just as pleasurably sit down and study the score, get up and dance, or just let it wash over me. - all the bass and drum parts on the whole album are thrilling, so even when i lose the plot of a guitar solo, they carry the day successfully, except maybe on the samey and endless "Willie the Pimp". Verdict: An iconic fusion album featuring all lot of the best (and a bit of the worst) of both rock and jazz. Thank goodness it's almost entirely instrumental. Listen Again? Most likely. I can imagine a future where I try to make my way through the dozen or so Zappa albums I have left and just spin this instead.

Cool sounds, nice rock

Willie the Pimp fucks.

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/frank-zappa/hot-rats/ You know what, fuck yeah! Was scared of having to listen to a Zappa record, because earlier experiences were not always very positive, but this one is kinda cool! I'm never the biggest fan of these experimental and mainly instrumental jazzy rock records, but this managed to mostly convince me!

Been meaning to listen to this one for quite some time. Did not disappoint. 4/5

Very cool sounds

Uventet og artig for en som aldri har tettet hullet mellom Freak Out og «Bobby Brown»

500 godina ispred svog vremena.

This was really good. Super jazzy. Great instrumentals

Batshit.

Fun and zippy

This is an absolute INCREDIBLE collection of talent. Incredible songwriting, incredible musicianship, incredible production. This is so ahead of its time. And each song is unique, and uses unique instruments. Probably going to be my favorite instrumental album.

Creative, melodic, energetic, and varied- but a bit inaccessible. Some of the songs are 9+ minutes and feature no vocals- not a negative, but hard to say it became a favorite song when the titles mean nothing for recall. There’s elements of jazz, funk, rock, and all kinds of stuff in here. Zappa was definitely on his most avant garde here. Apparently this was also one of the first records recorded with 16 track equipment, allowing for more overdubbing, and eliminating the need for many musicians to be playing at once. Important for that, I suppose. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great album from the maestro Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa is obviously a name I have heard quite a lot, but isn't someone I've ever actually listened to. Man, this album rocks! What a jam. Really really good fun, and the song titles are some of the best I've heard too. Great little jazzy number to end it off. Nice one Frank. Favourites: Peaches En Regalia Son of Mr. Green Genes The Gumbo Variations

Una fusión de géneros, me encantaron las últimas 2 rolas. Una peli.

4.5 Really good, and I'm not usually huge on purely instrumental stuff

Like anything experimental, there are some hits and misses. This one has more good than bad, and really did feel ahead of its time.

Had already listened to it as im a huge Zappa fan. Its an awesome mix of Jazz and Rock, but not my favorite.

The best Zappa album I've heard, some of the best jazz fusion out there. It never gets boring and it's stacked with really well-done instrumentation

Pretty good for an introduction to Zappa.

Męczące czasami ale ma parę dobrych nutek

Es un buen album, totalmente instrumental pero la composición de Frank Zappa es genial.

Zappa, a great Americam composer, is not my taste in music but I appreciate his genius.

me likey. i like how varied each song was. usually when i listen to music in the background i get the impulse to drop what im doing and just stare off. the songs here were i guess surprising enough to my subconscious that i could keep working. though, i was a bit bored by it which is why i decided to work while listening in the first place hehe

Like a cool jazz album from an alternate dimension.

Amazing and wildly creative, but honestly was expecting to be more amazed from all the hype, probably not my fav zappa

Yes please, sloppy jam band art project ftw.

Ultimate psychedelic guitar jams.

A record that starts out blistering with the first two tracks, but stumbles a bit toward the end. Still, the highs are high enough to carry the day.

poniendome al dia a la hora de puntuar, este se me salteo y hacec unos dias beni me lo recomendo, que casualidad o causalidad. me gusto

This isn't quite a 5 for me, but how could it be any less than a 4?

Coooooool. Don't remember so much, but it was fun and experimental.

Album #122 Frank Zappa: Hot Rats I’ve been a little put off delving into Zappa’s discography, partly because of how long and varied it is, which can be quite intimidating, and also because oftentimes artists who have a reputation for being quirky and zany do not hit the mark for me. Hot Rats, however, is an undeniably intriguing album; it has one of the most striking covers that I have seen and definitely sets the mood for an interesting listen. I always knew that Zappa was an immensely talented musician, but I never expected to like his lyricism and vocals; so, the good news for me is that this album is almost entirely instrumental. The opening track is definitely my favourite, and sounds unlike anything else from the time; it is one of those instrumentals that can only come as the result of an individual’s dream. The sound is impressive and distinct, but I wouldn’t say that it borders on quirky. The biggest oddball on the album comes by way of ‘Willie The Pimp’, which is the one track on the album that has vocals, which are provided by Captain Beefheart. The lyrics are a bit out there, but I get more soul vibes than avant-garde nonsense. The rest of the songs are also all either good or great, and there really isn’t an outlier. I enjoyed this album quite a bit more than I expected; however, I don’t think I can consider myself a Zappa fan until I’ve actually listened to his voice for a prolonged period of time. Best Songs: Peaches en Regalia, Willie The Pimp, Son Of Mr. Green Genes Worst Song: Little Umbrellas Score out of 10: 8.5

Really interesting jazz fusion. Probably Zappa at his least odd. Album has some really good grooves. 4/5 Will listen again

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

Live some jazz, love some rock, love a bit of silliness, what’s not to like here? Favourite song was close between a few but I’ve landed on ‘The Gumbo Variations’

I once heard Zappa described as the weirdest jazz a white boy could make. I mean they weren't wrong... Dude was talented, if he decided to make a straightforward album I think it could have lived in the top 40 for a couple of years. He was just so weird that the masses couldn't figure him out so he's more known to music nerds. This album is for the music nerds. 100%. It's a fun album if your open to it. The first track Willie the Pimp reminds me of every Bonnaroo until they sold out. It's weird and wild and had amazing guitar. Then the saxophone kicks in a track later and you're cold and wondering where your tent is and how you wound up in the cinema tent with no pants on. It's a ride of an album.

Really enjoyed it and listened to two other zappa albums after it

I have and like this already. I remember being surprised by how cool it was, having heard other Zappa stuff that I didn't like. Somehow less annoying the blues rock of the 70s even though it is a lot of wanky solos. 4 Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes 65/258 (25%) Will I get: Already have

I do enjoy instrumental/experimental CDs. Very Jazzy and enjoyable to listen to, unique compared to other albums I have gotten lately

As I was listening, I kept on trying to decide if I liked this or not. It’s different! Rock and roll jam band with a horn section is the best way I can describe this album. Some kick ass guitar riffs throughout, also some weird lyrics on Willy the Pimp, otherwise mostly just instrumental. It started to lose me towards the end when it became more jazzy than rock and roll and seemed to drag on. It's a solid 3.5... I'll upgrade to (4) because it was an interesting listening experience.

Unpredictable, a mix of rhythms

qué bonita es peaches in regalia. buenos pinches jams. aunque no le sé mucho a zappa me late más raro (qué pedo que este es el único en la lista)

I was hesitant on this one going in, mainly because Frank Zappa always kind of struck me as a novelty act, weird for the sake of being weird. Or, as a pidcaster I enjoy put it, seeming like a guy who's never done drugs making music for drug users. I did have a lingering confusion about all the guitar guys claiming Zappa was some next-level musical genius. Well, this album is it. I get it now. Turns out I'm just not a fan of Zappa singing or speaking on his songs, and there's blessedly little of that on this record. "Hot Rats" has more in common with that version of Zappa as it does with the numeroys jazz albums this list has me listening to. Except on those albums I knew what I was getting pretty much right off the bat, for better or worse, whereas this one continually surprised me, and, importantly, continually entertained me.

it was quite good actually

Getting this the day after Quicksilver Messenger Service from the same year is not exactly exciting. The vibes are very similar. That being said, I definitely prefer this. I don't always get Zappa. The tongue in cheek humor feels like it's aged out of the music to me. But there are a few bangers on here, and since it's almost entirely instrumental there's not much humor anyway. "Willie the Pimp" has a pretty killer 6 minutes of guitar noodling with really fun drum fills throughout. Highlight of the album for sure. Could have done with fewer little twinkles on other songs. Overall, manages to not overstay it's welcome. Pretty much nothing from the 60's makes it into my regular rotation, but I had a decent time with this. Pretty strong 3.5 stars. Probably round up because I'm in a good mood. Nice production for the era too. After this I really hope for something modern and scream-ey though.

There were songs I enjoyed and songs that I enjoyed a little less, but it was certainly interesting! I've never heard of Frank Zappa, so it was a fun surprise to get this jazz album.

Why does Frank Zappa sound like This but Mothers of Invention sounds like That

Jazz fusion, blues rock, instrumental rock.

Nice album, Zappa at his finnest :D

Very pleasantly surprised by this

Love this album. 4 - 4.5 stars

Great pioneer of experimental music

cool, heard it before

Kind of interesting but too meandering and experimental for me. The band is pretty tight, especially the drummer. I would be interested to hear them play more straight ahead jazz, rock or blues. Maybe spend a little more time developing melodies during their improvisations…

FUCK this rips so hard. An insanely good time it put me in such a good mood

Det meste er fordømt kult, men det er partier her og der som er ganske intetsigende.

Sykt kult.

This must have been insane to release in the 70's, unique composition and fun vocal uses throughout.

I quite enjoyed this. The guitar work and the collaboration of the different instruments was fantastic. Enjoyed every single song and loved the jazzy feel to it. Standout song was The Gumbo Variations. 4 stars

Peaches en regalia - 4 Willie the pimp - 4 Son of mr green genes - 4 Little umbrellas - 3 The gumbo variations - 3 It must be a camel - 3

Happy to see Zappa on this list. I've gotta be in the right mood, but I do enjoy a dose of his insanity every now and then. One thing Zappa is not, is boring. I enjoy this album, but I really wish they went a different way. If you care to look up the user albums list you'll see the right one and I highly recommend you give it a listen. Just as, if not more, approachable, Apostrophe, showcases Zappa's personality and wit in addition to his music. And you get to hear his actual voice, that is not him on Willie the Pimp. Zappa is organized chaos. His music is not as freeform and jam session as it may appear. Zappa diligently composed each of his songs, yet you still get the personality of the musician within the piece and his songs have groove for days. Over and under the chaos there is a groove that only Zappa can pull off. All that said, if not in the right mood/frame of mind he gives me a headache, literally. I really do need to be in a Zappa mood to throw on one of his records. Except Apostrophe (yes another plug) I can listen to that any day and enjoy. Arguably is most "pop" album and the diehards may scoff at it, but whatever, it's a no skip album that brings Zappa to the masses. Anyway, Hot Rats is a great album. Peaches En Regalia sounds like a cop show theme song, with the lead villain's, Willie the Pimp, theme immediately following on the next track. However, Gumbo Variations steals the show on this album, sax on crack with insane drums and bass keeping right up. amazing stuff.

Melt your face off guitar instrumentals. I loved it.

Lyrics are what i appreciate most in music, sadly there was very limited of this here. I felt as though the songs all overstayed their welcome a bit... 12 minutes, while not the longest song ever is a bit mad for an instrumental. Still I can appreciate how good the instruments and playing is so it is rated high. Also not usually a jazz man but this did get me grooving occasionally. I will listen further into Zappa

My first Frank Zappa experience. Enjoyed it, having no idea what it would ultimately sound like. Definitely a jammy progressive rock sound to it, which is my vibe. I'd rate it higher, but the last two songs were just too fappy loco for my tastes. 4 stars.

wild ride

After the previous Frank Zappa records, I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this. I think the key is that it was mostly instrumental - the most off-putting parts of the other Zappa records was always the lyrics and vocals

I have not heard Frank Zappa before. I was assuming I wouldn't like it based on "experimental" and "jazz" near each other. I don't seem to have a problem with jazz-rock as long as the jazz influence is the instrument choice and not the improvisation. So this album started out much better than I was expecting- guitar solos with jazz instruments backing it. It's great. The more jazz improv type music on the second half is fine. I'm ok listening to it, but it's background music. Overall, better than I was expecting.

This is classified as Rock but definitely more Jazz. Great sound.

Nice listen. Favourite track is definitely Little Umbrellas. It sounds very middle eastern to me, I genuinely don't know why though. 3.75/5

My first Zappa album. I had fun with it. Guitar jams and jazz aren’t my usual, but I’d be open to listening to more Zappa. 4/5

I dig this. Not normally an instrumental fan, but this kept me on my toes and was so fun.

I'm going to call this prog garage fusion, and boy am I here for it. Hot Rats came out in 1969 and sounds like it could have been released ten years later, or yesterday, or tomorrow. Listening to this album for the first time makes me think that it must have been super influential. I'm just not familiar with it beyond being vaguely aware of its existence. I don't know how much value there is here beyond the wild, gritty jams. I'm open-minded, but I don't predict life-changing insights will be revealed to me during "Mr. Green Genes." I'm not sure how often I'll return to it, but man, it rocks. Four stars.

I fw it

Didn’t hate it. It is a bit wanky of course at times best zap album. I’ve heard so far and I usually really hate them.

Fun surprise!! Instrumental baddies in here, some cool king crimson vibes and overall really fun to listen to. 4.25/5

Very interesting chord progressions. Too much jam, however.

heerlijk!

It took me a long time to get into Zappa. & to be honest some I get & some I don't. But this record is fantastic! It's mostly all instrumentals & it's definitely a trip!

08/03/2026 1. peaches en regalia - ooo liking it immediately... horns sound like car horns? sitar? bass is nice. like the organ(?) in the back. *2. willie the pimp - reaaally liking the violin with the bass. lyrics! love the guitar. drumming is great! violin is back!! 3. son of mr. green genes - liking the start.... bass is really great! saxaphone is phenomenal!! love the ending. *4. little umbrellas - love the bass and the saxaphone... drums are great!! love it!!!!! *5. the gumbo variations - reallllly liking the start... love the saxaphone again.... bass is fantastic. violin is back!! loved this one!!! *6. it must be a camel - loving this.... great!! wasn't sure what to think about this one when it first showed up, but really loved it! will relisten again soon!

Strange album but it's good

He seems to have been so unsufferable to talk to

Captain Beefeheart kept this from being a 5 star album. Otherwise I loved it.

Cool! Never heard any Zappa before this.

Thought I wouldn’t like this, but it’s rad

Mindless noodling, this is not. Excellent, jazzy guitar showcase. Favorite track: Son of Mr. Green Genes

Tamer than some Zappa I've been exposed to before, deffo essential listening 4 - a great album, even among this list

Its good i guess

This was really great running music, can’t speak to a static listening experience but if it’s dynamic enough to run to feel like it would have held up

So exiting!

…did Zappa invent prog rock? Why didn’t I know this? Why is no one talking about this?

I really enjoyed this. It was super fun and honestly perfect for a rainy afternoon.

Relisten

It's weird that this evaded me for so long, but then again it's not. There isn't an obvious box to put this into. (Maybe we don't put art in boxes or whatever?) Splits the difference between Television and Miles Davis. Can't wait to come back to this one.

Always a fresh listen with this album, something new to discover in every relisten. Like better the first half, great opener and couple of memorable songs. The second half or last two track feel a bit unbalanced but still enjoyable

Enjoyable but not loveable for me.

Great vibes here. Frank sings in 1 maybe 2 songs. When the guitar and drums are as catchy as they are here, who needs vocals. Willie the Pimp followed by Son Of Mr. Green Genes blew my brain. There is a LOT of Frank Zappa to discover which is a little intimidating but if there is more like this, I’m in

Good and interesting

Fuck yeah zappa time

Not a massive Zappa fan, but his work is always enjoyable. This is a good jazz infused psychedelic rock album worthy of a good listen. I enjoyed it.

Pretty cool

Great album. Son of Mr Green Genes and It Must Be A Camel favorites. Peaches in Regalia kinda sounds like video game music. All songs good. I would like this album more if there were more songs!! Willie The Pimp gets stuck in my head way too easily, but not as often as i’d like.

Love Zappa. This album is amazing, Peaches en Regalia is one of the great opening songs for an album

Meget fed faktisk.

Weird and enjoyable. Much easier to swallow without his vocals (which I don't hate)

All over the place in a very dope way. It was like jazz but not annoying

If a dive bar was a genre of music it'd be this (compliment)

Highly technical and quirky Jazz-Rock record. Zappa is able to keep it fun and approachable despite some of the more leftfield moments. It is also mostly instrumental, except for Captain Beefheart's vocals on "Willie the Pimp", so not many Zappa-esque humourous lyrics on here. This, however, allows the music to take center stage. Key tracks: Peaches en Regalia Willie the Pimp

Zwykle nie przepadam za tymi mocno instrumentalnymi płytami, ale ta była istną przygodą. Iście barokowy przesyt dźwięków, śmiałe kompozycje, melodyczne wolty. Piękne to było. 7.5/10

Unexpectedly good!

Yay! My first Frank Zappa on 1001! Woo Hoo. I love this album.

Loved it

I always figured Frank Zappa was for prog nerds what Captain Beefheart was for pretentious weirdos. I feel vindicated, and I liked it.

Now this is jazz that I can get down to. Insane leads.

Æ trodde ikke Frank Zappa spilte chill jazz? Alt man lære!

Ahead of it's time and wonderfully Frank.

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Wasn't sure what to expect going in but wow this was enjoyable. I had it in on the background and I think that was absolutely perfect.

Ah it's the music from the start of the Ellis and John podcast, and I also recognise the album name as the record shop in Sunderland we'd by gig tickets from. Don't think I've actually listened to any of this before mind, do quite like it. Mostly instrumental and full of ideas, it's classic rock at it's core but goes in a lot of different directions. Liked the jazzy last track a lot. Bit too meandering and long meaning there were enough parts I wasn't huge on to be a 5. But very good.

Really enjoyed this. Felt more of a jam session then anything else. Very sparse on any vocals. I had such a go at that spy Vs spy album the other day. Probably contradicting myself, as there are definitely jazz elements here too. I think the main difference is that this has progression, I can kinda follow a structure and can tell when it's building into something. That spy album was just a mess of noise and seemingly directionless for the vast majority of it. Anyway, thought this Zappa album was great. Was interesting background music, not too weird, and some great psychedelic singing guitars. I would say the first half was better than the latter 4

A lot of random noise that sometimes comes together to make beautiful music

I didn’t know Zappa was about these instrumental type grooves. Really enjoyable all the way through.

4,0 Highlights: Peaches En Regalia, Willie the Pimp

Liked this one a LOT more than I thought I would. Groovy, jazzy, abstract. Son of Mr. Green Genes and The Gumbo Variations stand out for me. I love the sax just going IN on Gumbo.

Pre-listen: I know the name, and know Zappa is meant to be very sporadic and jazzy rock with loads of improv, so we’ll see what this offers up. During listen: Blimey, goes all over the place! Feels like there’s so many musical motifs and references I’m not getting. Enjoying the ride. I’m getting Doors, Santana, jazz standards (warped), old school funk (feels 70s before the 70s) Wonky, eccentric, trebly (recording techniques probably lent to this), erratic drums mixed back, guitar playing stunning tbf - maximalist in a way, but allows standout stuff room to breathe. Also culturally all about the place - can feel South American, African, Afro-American, all at same time. Post-listen: Blimey, goes all over the place! Feels like there’s so many musical motifs and references I’m not getting. Enjoyed the ride. Doors, Santana, warped jazz standards, old school funk, blues; it’s all there. Culturally as well, seems to draw on South American, African, Afro-American, Asian, and more all at once at times. Some grooves I just get thrust into more than others, musicianship outstanding though. Willie the pimp, mr green genes, must be a camel, all standouts and pretty remarkable compositions. Couldn’t listen to it all day every day, but for the time I do, WOW!

I liked the music very much, some songs overlong. Would have needed lyrics for a 5!

Frank Zappa should be in every conversation about the best guitar players of all time. This album is mind-blowing.

OK, this album slaps far harder than I remember. I listened to it a ton in the 80s and early 90s when I was a pretentious young adult trying to pretend to like difficult listening. Now, I realize how joyous the improv is. It is a great fusion of jazz and rock, just like it was probably supposed to be. Could be the shock of recognition, like seeing someone you found difficult but haven't seen for a long time. Still, I enjoyed listening to it. It also brought together impressions I have of post wwII California and the American West - the innovation and alienness that exudes from places like Nevada and the aerospace, aviation and military mixed with cultural novelties. It's somehow all wrapped up in listening to this.

one of the jazzier zappa albums i've heard, and it's really damn good. not as weird as "freak out" or "joe's garage", for example, and a better listen for it.

really great sound (i haven't ever listened to that type of music)

Finally a Zappa album that didn’t hurt my brain. Actually enjoyed this one instead of trying to wrangle the abstract mass that is his usual style.

I know Peaches En Regalia as the bed music from the excellent Ellis and John radio show on Five Live. Overall an enjoyable listen, but part of the fun of Zappa is the oddball lyrical flourishes so I would have preferred a few more tracks with vocals like the one with Captain Beefheart.

Funky and groovy

Frank Zappa can create some weird magic. This album is ultimately rock and jazz fusion, but with Zappa’s vision it seems utterly unique. The track to return to is “Willy the Pimp” because you have vocals by Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart as well as some phenomenal guitar work. I was wondering when I would return to the rest of this weird magic, and concluded that my life isn’t weird or magical enough to ever have this playing as the soundtrack. But it’s great stuff.

Phenomenal! I see why he was so revered in the day

Ном декілька треків, але вініл би не брав

Also quite good music, I picked 1-2 songs to my own playlist

FAVO: Willie the Pimp, Son of mr Green genes, The gumbo variations

Peaches in regalia is an instrumental thing of beauty. Playful yet royal. A classic track. Willie the pimp is totally different. A bluesy tune with fire vocals from captain beefheart. Son of Mr green genes is like an extention of track one. Beautiful melodies and textures but also awesome impro solos from zappa. Huge track. Little umbrellas is a very jazzy cool tune. One again, the textures are just stunning. The upright bass and woodwind. Yes. The Gumbo Variations is built out of lengthy improvised solos. A very funky drum bass foundation. Very groovy, and very long. But we are committed to the project so it's all a part of the journey. The violin solo is quit massive. It must be a camel. So now we can really see the structure of the album. A majestic arranged piece followed by an improvised lengthy one. And what a way to finish. It's a great great record. A one that benefits from the listening experience of the entire thing. It's a very strong 4.5.

Fun, mostly instrumental. It takes you down winding paths. It's almost symphonic in its layering, but of course more with rock/fusion instrumentation and beats. Playing is fantastic.

красивая музыка про жизнь мальчика в гетто

4.0 stars Really like this one...more than I thought I would. I've heard about Zappa, the legend and the music, for years. I'm a big Phish fan, and FZ is spoken about as a diety in that scene. I can see why there's so much overlap. This album felt like an artsy, jamband session. It was fun, quirky, but a lot more accessible than what I envisioned Zappa's music being. maybe it's just this album that's like that. Favorite song: Son of Mr. Green Genes

Peaches en regalia - Funky ahh, Zelda sounding track Willie the pimp - The funkiness lives on. Love when it goes krrrr, feel that in my soul. Son of Mr Green Genes - The timeline where Link got the triforce of funk. Navi feature @3:09 Little umbrellas - Ok, now we're in some sort of noir. Tell me your stories magic music man. The gumbo variations - Feels like being chased by a very passionate sax player. It must be a camel - A weird, experimental, great closure to one of the funkiest albums I've heard

Good instrumental album for atmosphere and vibe. Rate 8/10

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Surprisingly enjoyable and groovy

First time actually listening to Frank Zappa, and just love it. Amazing solos!

I dig the concept of what Zappa's doing, but it can be repetitive and kind of go nowhere for me.

An instrumental album, except one vocal cut- and that had to feature Captain Beefheart!... Why are you wasting America's precious time with this, you asshole!" (Zappa en 1989)

Zappa!! Love this era of Frank and his taking on jazz. Some great stuff here. This is definitely one of the high points in a discography full of high points.

Enjoyable listen; will return

This was far more bluesy and rocky than I had imagined and I really liked it. A nice surprise.

Jazz isnt my thing at all but Zappa makes it my thing. I know this album of old but enjoyed it more this time. Not a 5 cos I didnt like the beginning of little umbrellas

Really liked this album more than I thought I would. It is definitely a mood album, not for general listening. Great for summer. This is a 4

Fun sounds

Quite enjoyed this, but not enough for top marks

A really great listen whilst getting ready for the work day ahead - matched my Friday mood perfectly. Super fun, funky, incredibly interesting and engaging.

This is an interesting one. Other than Captain Beefheart ruining the first minute or so of Willie the Pimp, it was pretty much all instrumentals. Some cool jazzy vibes intertwined with lengthy rock solos. On paper, that is right up my alley. It wasn’t my favorite thing in the world. Felt super disjointed at times with various musicians doing their thang but maybe for too long? I was surprised a the length of some songs, though that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Idk. It’s above average as far as albums we’ve been subjected to on this list. Maybe a 3.5 rounded up to a 4.

Oh my god!!! To borrow an expression from a reviewer on Tubular Bells, this is longform instrumental wankery at its purest -- which I'm learning is exactly right up my alley. I'm willing to forgive Zappa completely for whatever Freak Out! was, because this is nothing but awesome jazz fusion heat. VERY strong 4 that might turn into a 5 with a bit of simmerin' Shoutout to rats 🐀 Standouts: Peaches En Regalia • Willie The Pimp • The Gumbo Variations

VERY strong 4, I just feel that it gets a little unfocused. However, this has made me really interested in Frank Zappa and very interested to enjoy more of his music in the future.

I enjoyed this. The music was well done.

Crazy funky energetic jazz

I enjoyed this quite a lot. Really out there stuff in a good way.

Lots of great improvisation, some a little too chaotic in places

Energetic, groovy, hypnotic. Messy yet sophisticated, as the instruments are so well arranged together forming a fusion between genres.

You like jazz

Funky fun and very Zappa.

Psychedelic goodness, the first Zappa I've really liked.

Stone cold classic. By turns anthemic, twisty, gritty, and squonky, the tracks on this album combine to create a demanding experience that rewards close listening and suspension of disbelief. Probably my favorite Zappa album alongside Apostrophe', though I haven't heard anywhere close to all of them. It checks a lot of boxes for me, and was formative in my music listening history. It's a solid 4.5 from me.

I liked this album, completely different than what I’d listen to. Kinda like a rock but also jazz? If you like just instrumentals, then this album is for you

All instrumentals but solid

I liked the overall feel of this album. All of the songs kind of blended together but I enjoyed it. Great album for relaxing in the summer

1. Peaches en Regalia (9/10) 2. Willie the Pimp (8.5/10) 3. Son of Mr. Green Genes (8/10) 4. Little Umbrellas (8/10) 5. The Gumbo Variations (6/10) 6. It Must Be a Camel (8.5/10)

More musical than satire.

I wish we could give more detailed scores. Because I'd like to give this album a 4.5.

Rock and jazz had a baby

Enjoyable backround music. 😁

Adventurous but not obnoxious prog, proper class

Never heard this before, and never heard Zappa instrumentals. Groovy, man.

Good jams across the album, would have been a 5 but those last few minutes of The Gumbo Variations became a bit of a slog. Excited for more Zappa!

Incredible psychedelic side 1, track 2 in particular a banger, slightly less keen on side 2 but overall really liked this

I’ve never listened to a full Frank Zappa album before. He’s obviously a genius, and obviously insane — in a positive and influential way. This has more jamming than I’m into these days, but it’s really very good jamming. I’ll give it a 4.

Fantastic progressive rock album from one the greatest guitarist and composers in rock.

Es una banda, tiene muchos sonidos. Voy a necesitar escucharlo muchas veces para poder identificar todas las cosas que están sonando. Es para escuchar dedicandose a eso, no para poner de fondo haciendo otra cosa.

Good album

I’m familiar with some Zappa stuff. Never listened to Hot Rats before. Really enjoyed it!

Review: 4 Instrumentals crazy good, never get boring, he knows when to switch it up even when the songs it 7 minutes long. Sadly, his voice leaves isn't very nice and doesn't suit the songs but, he can make some good instrumentals. Nice mix of Jazz and Rock elements. Son of Mr. Green Genes was a really good the ending was perfect, very theatrical. The Gumbo Variations was a spectacle as well, his use of different instruments and making them mesh so well is highly impressive. Final Thoughts: This guy's knowledge about Jazz knows no bounds. The solos and everything about the jazz/rock instrumentals were phenomenal. I wasn't expecting this from the album cover. Also, Frank Zappa you're not a vocalist no more lyrics outta you please. Although the album was good i personally won't be listening to it hardly ever tbh. It was a good experience nonetheless. I wish the songs were shorter.

This album was really cool to listen to. It was something new for me since most of the tracks are instrumental, with very little lyrics. Even without focusing on words, the music itself was fun. It was groovy and enjoyable all throughout. Definitely a fun listen.

I am not sure what I expected. But I liked what I got.

gnarly

I was really surprised and liked this quite a bit. Almost 5 stars

Good stuff. Haven't heard a lot of Zappa but I enjoyed this.

I owned his album Zoot Allures and enjoyed that one. I liked this better. I have already listened to it a second time.

The whole of side 1 is great. Just the right amount of indulgence and weirdness, but it really grooves. Side 2 is alright, but the Gumbo Variations starts to drag a bit and It Must Be A Camel veers a bit far into "two time signatures playing at the same time" weirdness for me. I think maybe I need more Zappa in my life.

so funky sounding, so cool. definitely one I'll throw on when studying from now on

Good casual listening in a fun zany way. Frank zappa is always a fun listen. Chaotic yet fun! Zappa is a madman

Funky, jazz feel. Very entertaining

Really liked this album, much more than I expected. Such a cool blend of jazz, funk, and rock. It definitely started to blend together at the end a bit, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Top Songs: Peaches En Regalia, Willie The Pimp

Overall Rating - 3.91/5 (7.83/10). This is about what I expected when Frank and The Mothers came up on my feed.

It's pretty much a jam session, mix of psychedelic, blues, jazz and more, really good listen. Much more accessible than some of his other stuff.

Damn the rats really are hot in this one

The Gumbo Variations realmente fica cansativa depois de um tempo. Meu primeiro Zappa, mais de década atrás, e muito bom, mas talvez não seja nem top 5 da carreira dele.

Jamming! No lyrics after the first song ? Interesting how polarizing the reviews of this record are! I am enjoying it, i feel like it is one of those that in the right time and place to listen it is awesome. While working, doing stuff around the hours, having on as background is great! I appreciate the artistic expression and its the type of band i would love to see live.

meet me at the toilet bowl and don’t be late!

3.7 2x really enjoyed the heavy instrumental-esque style album

After some time has passed, I can confidently say this album is a gem. The instrumentation is sufficiently heavy when it needs to be, always colorful, and knows when to take a step back. The pacing is perfect on this record. You have sprawling fusions of jazz, rock, and blues that span 10+ minutes followed by smooth pieces of jazz. I could listen to The Gumbo Variations and never get bored. It’s a wholly complete experience that operates almost as a soundtrack. It doesn’t need vocals (except track 2) because it’s beyond expressive.

While never an all-time favorite of mine, this is a go-to party album for me. I love the ride and take it whenever I can.

4.0 - Very Good

fave song: son of mr green genes really enjoy the opening song as well. songs like willie the pimp and the gumbo variations felt too intense without any feeling of resolution. it was just endless noisy soloing. normally i don’t mind it but i need to have regular brain breaks where something more melodic happens. overall, i loved a lot of this album. 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Before its time

Jazzy instrumentals and solos

Whhaaaaaaaa!!!! I heard he was good but this is so good.

Perfect blend of rock and jazz. Frank Zappa's best in my opinion. Favorite track: Peaches En Regalia

The first 2:30 of The Gumbo Variations is goose music for geese. Honestly, this was pretty great! I wasn't big on what vocals there were here, and I probably would've preferred if there weren't any. The sax went off the rails for a while as well. But those are really my only critiques; 40 mins of some sick guitar shredding.

this is one of those albums for which i would have loved to have been alive when it released. can you imagine finding these jams with your pals in your dad's odoriferous den in your split-level house? damn. this is a fuckin' bop. king giz gets a lot of love for "doing every genre" across their discography, but Zappa *could* have done that-- and probably better-- if he'd ever wanted to. the musicality here is wildly good and so so interesting. great listen. also, killer album name.

I’ve never heard a Zappa album with so few vocals, but I enjoyed this a lot. Not super familiar with him overall. The music does tend to dip into the “Yoinky Sploinky” zone a bit much for my tastes, but those incidents were thankfully few and far between.

"Peaches En Regalia" was presented to me at a young age as a perfect song. I surely didn't know enough about the world of music to disagree with my dad who seemed to have a limitless knowledge of music and its stars. I still don't think I know enough now to say otherwise, but damn I love listening to Zappa. I love how much he pushed boundaries in his compositions, how ahead of a his time it all sounds (even if it hasn't aged as well as other late 60s/early 70s albums). I love me some electric violin. This album benefits from the lack of lyrics, which certainly makes other Zappa less enjoyable. I could listen to "The Gumbo Variations" all day.

A rip-roaring journey if I’ve heard one. I loved how it’d go from jazz to blues to rock in sudden, energetic stutter-steps. I wasn’t aware of your game, Mr. Zappa. The solos kicked ass, and it was immediately clear how influential Zappa is because they shared a lot in common with the neo-psychedelic stuff I love.

Really surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Expectations were low

Pretty cool jam album

Classic Zappa. Zany, meandering, jazzy awesomeness.

This album slaps. Gotta listen to more Zappa. The only thing keeping this from a 5 was that a few songs carried on a bit too much.

This was a wild ride. But so goes any Zappa masterwork.

Very much ahead of it's time. A lot of jazz, fusion influences and sources.

Enjoyed

The “Shiznitalbam Snip Snap Zappa”

The fact that this album cover looks like it could be for a Korn release 30 years later tells me we’re in for a wild ride. The Mothers of Invention changed my life. Their satirical doo wop and psychedelic insanity opened my third, fourth and seventh eye to the universal truths held therein. I became a totem in my own fictional religion. I found out I was indeed a rock. Now it’s time to flash forward to some accidentally flash-fried rodents a la the Dallas Sportatorium and learn some shit about Gumbo. I can’t wait. Peaches En Regalia - They rule over the peach kingdom with jazz fusion. What is it fusing with? I never really knew. Regal in its way, bizarre in more ways. Willie the Pimp - YES. WOO. YEAH. Saying “little pimp” with a rhythm that goes this ballistic is a surefire seven fingers up. I gained my sixth and seventh digit in a gamma explosion in a secret cigar facility under the sands in Kyrgyz foothills. Those Central Asian cigars will knock you on your ass if they ever see the light of day. Son of Mr. Green Genes - No, no. Mr. Green Genes is my father. Call me Billy. Yes, it’s short for Bilirubin. Bilirubin Q. Genes. You know, now that you know my name, I feel the freedom to say stupid things like “I’m actually really loving this bizarre jam album, despite saying that every other jam album kind of sucked.” Little Umbrellas - We’ve got sinister bass-driven grooves on this thing? The Gumbo Variations - Finally, I discover a song about gumbo. Errm it seems like I’m late to the party. When I do the millennial/redditor “Errm,” please know it’s ironic. Despite my cornball atheism and bad jokes, I still see myself as above the miasmic abyss known as Reddit. It Must Be a Camel - Ahh the smooth, relaxed smoothness of a Camel cigarette. If your emphysema has that oaky timbre, you know, it MUST be a camel. This guy was a genius. This is so incredibly unique and it seems as though nobody even tried to copy him. The musicianship all over this thing is fantastic as well. Just a super engaging record from the moment that rat fell from the pipe into the deep fryer, right through to the cigarette ad. Bon appetit! 4 HIGHLIGHTS: Peaches En Regalia, Willie the Pimp, Little Umbrellas

Chaotic genius

Never listened to a whole FZ album, but it's kinda cool.

I shuddered at the thought of this because I’ve utterly despised all of Zappa’s works that I’ve heard so far via this project, but finally I stumbled upon the one and only collection that’s moved me. This was actually really good. It perfectly fit my chaotic ‘thinking while walking home from work’ mood that I was in today.

Tiene una musicalidad nice, al principio de la segunda canción tiene una voz en el background medio heavy metal rockero, que no es mi vibe. En general muy buen CD, me sorprendió que en su mayoría fuera instrumental

Would be a 5 but this album required attention and giving into the music a 4 because its great but not 5 bc it requires effort

I had no idea what to expect. This was a real treat, drums holding together a variety of styles from funk to free form jazz. Solid 4

First ever jazz rock album. Maintains interest throughout.

There is a real driving force on this record, a rush of energy. Its a jazzy, jammy rock record that is scatty but completely structured in its erratic nature. There's a nice mix of smoother moments with wilder brasher moments - Zappa is not afraid to blow your head off. Interestingly, over 50 years later it strikes me the influence Hot Rats has had over the very best of video game music. Its got that wistful exploration that makes you want to drive your character to the next level.

Never listened to Frank before... I will again.

Really enjoyed the longer jazzy songs on here

greatness

Musikalisch/handwerklich gut, aber kein herausragendes Lied dabei.

Pretty good way more instrumental than I expected.

Schönes Album, viel Instrumental, teilweise Tarantino Vibes, eher prog

Fire!!!

I know absolutely nothing about Frank Zappa, but I enjoyed this. It's pretty unhinged, in a good way.

Can hear the influence Zappa has on Phish especially on this album

What an amazing find. This felt like a 70's action movie soundtrack. This is why I'm happy to have discovered this site... Would I listen to again? Yeah, baby.

I think, to a lot of people, Frank Zappa himself may be the most difficult part of Zappa's music. Which is my theory as to why the largely instrumental Hot Rats is often considered his most accessible, and even his best by some. As far as I can tell, the trick to Zappa's music is usually that he composes some mind-bendingly intricate, jazzy, and enjoyable, experimental rock music: then he records vocals over top of it where he sings about piss jokes and fucking kitchen appliances. I suspect that this may be a turn-off for some people. So, without any vocals by Zappa, Hot Rats puts nothing in between you and the compositional ability, raw instrumental talent, and remarkable nuance that defines Zappa's best songs at their heart. The only track with vocals is Willie The Pimp, featuring the infamous Captain Beefheart, and that song is just sick as hell. Everything else here is just raw Zappa instrumental songwriting. And it really is something worth celebrating. The level of consistent songwriting, and compelling interplay between performers is incredible. Even at its jammiest moments, Hot Rats is focused and compelling. For being so intricate, it's shockingly emotive too. I'll simply say, this is an *easy* 4, but much like with most of Zappa's catalogue, I need to spend a little more time and dig a little deeper. I get the sense that this is the sort of album that just gets more rewarding on repeat listens.

ykw, i like this white band LMFAO. it was funky and reminded me of the peanuts at some points! it felt very jimi hendrix too how fun!

Very weird, sometimes good weird sometimes bad weird but the musical complexity is impressive. Everything is intentional, there’s no “happy accidents” Willie the pimp, peaches and the gumbo variations are the standouts Phish covers Peaches en Regalia, first introduction to Zappa prior to actually listening to it.

Interessant album. Ganske bra, egentlig. Det jeg skulle ønske jeg fikk fra Herbie Hancock.

Actually really enjoyed this, and from what I know, this is about as "straightforward" as Zappa gets. It's jazzy, funky, bluesy with a layer of experimentation in there, but not too experimental. Excellent instrumental performances all around, some violin shredding from Jean-Luc Ponty, great drumming. Willie the Pimp is an absolute standout song with a super cool groove and amazing Captain Beefheart vocals. I dig it.

Reminds me of the time I took acid, and threw up on the cat.

I’ve only heard of Frank Zappa from The Mothers of Invention album on here that I absolutely hated so I was dreading this going in. Fortunately this was brilliant for the most part. The only song that didn’t hit for me was The Gumbo Variations, it went on a bit too long for my liking. Top Track - Son Of Mr Green Greens

I liked this. I like Frank Zappa...

Sick album. I've heard some songs by Zappa, but Willie the Pimp has converted me to a believer. the guitar scattered over this album is super solid. The bass player and drummer do a great job holding it down the whole time. Fells like a very different brand of the kind of stuff that Hendrix was doing. I didn't think the entire album was a masterpiece, but the moments that were good, were Really Good. and even the lower points were filled with experimental jazz with rock solid grooves. Some of the horns lost me a little, but otherwise, rock solid jams and really awesome playing. I think that seeing this live would easily go down as a top concert experience. I do think at times this album is a bit over the top, but that's how they get it's best moments as well I think. I could understand people not loving it, but I do think it is a great album to be on the list, as it is pretty boundless

Loved this album, a little bit sonically exhausting just because of how much is going on and how many different musical ideas get expressed. 4/5 though, big fan. I’ll be listening again

This shit fucks. 4 Stars.

First half amazing, second good. 3,9

Very good

i really liked this? kinda surprised. lots of funky jams

Had no idea this was all instrumental. This album is about as jazz rock as it gets. And Frank can really play guitar. All in all this was pretty awesome. Not sure when I would listen again but it warrants more listens…

4 Stars (11/15)

Is this jazz? funk? soul? rock? psychedelic? stoner? I think its all of them combined together, jazz fusion is probably the safest label. This feels like a classic, one of those albums that is a benchmark and defines what experimental art music can be. I love the instrumentation i’m pretty sure i'm hearing flutes, clarinets, saxophone, violin, and the signature guitar tone, everything sounding intentionally weird, crazy, strange, slightly unhinged and uncanny, but technically brilliant and very fitting. It’s like being dragged through a parade by jazz musicians on acid. I love the journey this album takes you on, to me what stands out most is how playfully groovy and engaging it stays even though it’s almost entirely instrumental. Each track feels distinct, very diverse and has a lot of personality. Willie the Pimp caught me off guard with how heavy it is compared to the rest, while The Gumbo Variations leans heavily into funk, however Peaches En Regalia is definitely my favourite.

The more I listened the more into it I got. Good walking-with-purpose music but felt like it was just the right length before I was ready to listen to something else. Good stuff

I fear I may be a Frank Zappa guy now. Devastating

Didn't realize how jazzy he is

love him or hate him, zappa is original as fuck

Zappa sure knew how to keep things interesting, and with such high quality musicianship to boot.

An absolutely excellent (mostly) instrumental album. Zappa’s virtuosity is on full display throughout, and is by far my favorite album instrumental wise out of the little Zappa I’ve heard. A must listen for any fans of experimental, avant-garde, and or progressive rock.

This is muppet music. I love it. Super long instrumental songs are still not my cup of tea. They get repetitive to me! But This was well executed. It's cool, it's orchestral, it's zingy, but it also got a little tiresome as the album progressed. I would love to witness this live but it's better served in that format than here.

Zappa is niche. He is music for music nerds. That very much means that this album should be on this list. He tends to have perverse, Bizarre lyrics, luckily all but one is an instrumental. First & foremost he is a composer, who surrounds himself with the best & expects perfection. All of this is for his amazing musical experience but still niche. Amazing great album that the average person would struggle with. Which is why it gets a 4.

This is great! I remember it all but it's been a really long time since I listened to the whole album. Most of the songs are lyric free which I like, as it's hard to sing along to Zappa without feeling awkward. I'm not a Jazz expert but I find this accessable.

Great psych blues rock to listen to driving to Chicago on a sunny afternoon

Super Album, super Musik

A few Zappa albums have come my way on the 1001 and I’ve not really been impressed. Hot Rats though is a different breed. Enjoyed from start to finish.

hes cooking with this one

Damn, that was pretty awesome. Very close to 5

It’s been a while since I’ve listened to this record and I was really blown away by how strong of an album it is. Musicianship is off the charts, pretty typical for Zappa, but the songs are really melodic and much better than I remember.

I've learned that jazz and I don't typically get along. So, when this music generator suggested "Hot Rats" by Frank Zappa, I was a bit wary. Zappa's catalogue is famously diverse and can be intimidating. My experience with his work is limited to "Sheik Yerbouti", which is very good, and "Joe's Garage", which I find excellent. So, what about "Hot Rats"? I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it. The musicianship is great, the lead guitar is wonderful, and the tunes are melodic, well-paced and don't out stay their welcome. "Willie the Pimp" and "Son of Mr. Green Genes" were the two tracks that really struck me. It wouldn't be an everyday listen for me but I could pull this album out, once in a while, and really enjoy it. Four stars. Side one 1 "Peaches en Regalia" (4/5) 2 "Willie the Pimp" (5/5) 3 "Son of Mr. Green Genes" (5/5) Side two 4 "Little Umbrellas" (4/5) 5 "The Gumbo Variations" (4/5) 6 "It Must Be a Camel" (4/5) Total - 26 Average - 4.33 108/1001

It's rock, and it's jazz. I think I would give this 3.5 stars based on taste, but bump it up to 4 stars for technical skill

I liked the Jazz influences in this album, very weird, very fun

I normally don't like instrumental albums but this is so sexy 8.5/10

Is it weird or is it genius? Neither it’s Frank Zappa

hot rats like they’re dressed up and looking good or hot rats like they’re getting cooked

cool fun melodic never stale always awesome dont let the aesthetic fool ya Fav song: Son of Mr Green Genes

1969 was early for this kind of psych rock. I didn’t realize the kinds of synth sounds they were already making by this point. Amazing record

Very good
