Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Was not in the right brain space yesterday to give this one it's dues. Listened to a couple tracks, and of course it's good! It's Alice fucking Cooper!
Decent enough album (3-4star)
Overall good, I'm not really a stadium rock fan but it's a good album! I could have done without the loud hissing at the end of My Stars, and the sexual undertones of Gutter Cat vs. The Jets, both minor things though.
Alice & his band were still trying to find their sound at this point but really hit a sweet spot with the title track and a few others. Their music was always more interesting with visual accompaniment but at the same time, what an exciting journey
So weird and so over the top. Alice Cooper was totally somewhere else with his music. I liked it a lot.
Gotta love some classic Alice Cooper
Veel beter dan ik had verwacht. Mooi en gevarieerd plaatje. Ga ik zeker vaker draaien.
There's more than meets the eye. I associated Cooper very much with metal and shockrock, maar this totally different. Pleasent surprise!
Way more interesting than I expected. Fun listen and the perfect length
nice sounds
Primer apropament a Alice Cooper i bones sensacions.
Fun and theatrical and West Side Story??? Also was confused for a while because I confused Alice Cooper with Alice in Chains before I looked it up lol
entertaining from start to finish
Rock and blues plus a theme that ties everything together what more could you ask for?
This album gets "most surprising" of the list so far. The titular track is great and fun, but also I've heard it 10,000 times. Track 2 and 3 were... not great. I was like "Okay, this is middle school boy music", which is fine, but I ain't in middle school anymore. Then we get the rest of the album! There's jazz, there's show tunes, there is a big fan finale. So much depth for a hard rock album. Most improved.
Tres bon album rock. Un classique! 4.25
I liked it - it had a lot of interesting aspects of musical songs.
Tracks: My Stars, Luney Tune, Public Animal #9
Enjoyable!
Schoooooooooooooooooool's Out for eveeer
Exceeds expectations.
4/9 Dude just makes great fucking albums. Standout Tracks: Gutter Cat vs. The Jets, Blue Turk, My Stars
A couple of classic alice numbers and a few decent tracks, but let down by almost half being mediocre
bonne surprise
Favorite song: Public Animal #9
It’s fine. Some good songs musically but a lot of really cheesy lyrics.
Alice was clearly throwing a bunch of ideas at the wall here, to the record's benefit at times (see the proto-slacker rock "Alma Mater") and to its detriment, as it sometimes gets cheesy and confused.
Nothing mindblowing, it's okay.
Pretty good
This was okay but I really liked Billion Dollar Babies more. I was working when I had this on so maybe it warrants another playthrough in a different listening setup
Decent album. Kind of fell off after schools out, but still was OK.
Fun album! Fitting timing for this one.
How did they give me this album the moment school let out
Quite a roller coaster of an album. 'School's Out' is a certified banger, but it sounds much much more like a demo tape than I remember it. Still good energy though! It's all rocky and dandy until 'Blue Turk' comes on, and I have to double check if I'm still listening to the same album. Even though the song itself is pretty cool, it feels quite out of place. And from here on it's not the same record anymore. For better or worse I don't know, but there's a clear distinction from the first side. 'Public Animal #9' is a pretty cool song, and so is 'Alma Mater'. One thing I really appreciate with this record is how Alice manages to make it rocky and cool without singing about banging chicks and getting hammered. Overall I liked this surprisingly much. Strong 3!
I think "School's Out" was one of the first rock songs I listened to of my own volition after discovering it on my father's Absolute Rock Classics compilation CD, which I downloaded to my iPod. The song is a classic! The rest of the album wasn't at all what I was expecting. It was much jazzier and poppier than I thought it would be. There are piano parts on multiple tracks, and some of it sounds surprisingly progressive, like "My Stars." When "Blue Turk" came on, I even had to check that I was still listening to the right album because it was so jazzy. "Public Animal #9" was the only other standout track besides "School's Out." I'm giving it a strong 3.
Oh my stars! Yeah, this record was not something I wanted to dive into. If anything has aged poorly to my internal snap judgement centre, it's rock that would play softly from a work truck at a poorly managed construction site. See, as a youngster who was not fond of school, the idea of school being "out forever" made my malicious, undeveloped brain titter with glee, and I really didn't think that anything this album had to offer would lurch even one of my malnourished, microplastic addled, adult brain cells into gear. I was wrong. This thing is pretty fun! It has moments where it sounds like the Beatles for christ's sake. What this album really sounds like to me is a colelction of songs from a band on a really upper-echelon kid's show. Like it's first and foremost there to appeal to young kids, but the music director also wanted it to be good. Well you tell blippi or chippi or whoever that we think his record is juuuust fine. 3 HIGHLIGHTS: The leather puppet who replaced Alice Cooper likes golf!
Tracks like School's Out, Luney Tune and Blue Tark were so good but the last 4 tracks? nah bro not my shit
Very strong 3
Didn't realise how varied Alice Cooper can sound! I liked it for sure
A surprisingly good album with some really interesting songs on it. Not bound to one genre, playful and layered.
Short. Varied. Like 50% of this review.
The albums not bad, but not for me. Really dig “School’s Out” and “Public Animal #9.”
It’s ok. The title track is my favorite but it’s not a bad listen
Huh, had no idea that this is a concept album: a musical about teenage shenanigans in the summer after School’s Out?
This is exactly what I thought it would be. An average glam rock album with one standout song (the title track). This really didn't do anything for me. Mid 3.
Panties?
It's exactly what you expected. Not boring. Strait up the middle rock from the 1970s.
Schools Out is the worst song on here, way more blues than I thought
Nice brass work in Blue Turk. Not what I expected from AC. More brass than I would expect
Fav song: Alma Mater (track 8)
This is a weird one. The first track is the hit and maybe the only AC track that I could name if asked. Of course I would have expected that the album that shares the name as the hit song to sound like that song. That is not the case, this album quickly goes into different and much weirder directions. While I can appreciate the creativity, it's a bit jarring coming down from the title track. I definitely enjoyed parts of it where it got more wacky but overall it was a little too uneven for me.
Primeira musica é banger, o resto é meh
Tits
Classic hard rock that pulls all stops.
Not yet listened
School's Out - 3.5/5 Luney Tune - 3/5 Gutter Cat vs. The Jets - 3/5 Street Fight - 2.5/5 Blue Turk - 3/5 My Stars - 3/5 Public Animal #9 - 3/5 Alma Mater - 4/5 Grande Finale - 3/5
I know he's being creative which I support, but it's not really my fave, and that's okay. I was a little scared when he started singing that song "---- vs the jets" or something like that because I thought I had accidentally started playing west side story, which I used to be a fan of, but not anymore. I used to really like ben cook and so I was really excited that he was in the new movie of west side story. I appreciate some of the songs, most of them really, and I appreciate aspects of the story especially of the ones about living in america as someone from a different country or as a person of color. However I do not appreciate how Maria's little boo thang kills her brother and then she immediately has sex with him and then trashes on her practically sister-in-law for being mad at him and her. Like what. Oh god I'm sorry I'm mad at you for freaking with the guy who killed MY boo thang. I don't know it's just dumb to me. Anyways...
Ah yes. When albums were sold, wrapped in panties.
After the title track, some of the rest was a bit unexpected. We get a trombone solo on Blue Turk and a few other styles which are not quite the hard/glam rock I associate with the band. Not sure it was super remarkable but solid 3* mostly for the opener
This was fine. Seemed like pretty typical '70s boomer rock that was an enjoyable experience but nothing out of it was all too memorable.
A fun concept but a lot of the songs here are kind of shallow and dont make for a very interesting listen 6/10 Favourite: School's Out Least Favourite: Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets
Day 26 School's Out by Alice Cooper This was fun. I hadn’t listened to this album before, but of course I knew the title track already. I was honestly expecting more filler and boring rock songs, but this ended up being way more glammy and theatrical than I imagined. There are definitely moments where I lost focus a bit, but the highlights are really strong. Some great riffs, lots of personality, and just a fun chaotic energy throughout. And that final song completely caught me off guard in the best way. Didn’t expect the album to end like that at all. Right now it’s a strong 3 out of 5 for me, but I could definitely see it becoming a 4 after another listen or two. Food pairing? Greasy late-night diner food. Onion rings, burgers, fries, milkshake. Something messy and fun. Wine pairing? Honestly this feels more like cheap red wine drunk out of plastic cups at a weird party. Vinyl? Not for now. Favourite song? “Alma Mater”. First listen? Yes. Overall 3 out of 5.
Some standout tracks and loved how inventive the rock was but it kind of blended all together for me. Could totally see raising this a star after another listen tho.
I have never listened to any Alice Cooper other than the song "Schools Out" so I had always associated him with classic rock so I was pretty blown away by the range on this album. Not just in genre terms but the songs are also mostly interesting as well.
School’s Out saved this from being 2 stars.
This was better than Alice Cooper's last album I got, but it still wasn't that amazing. The more I listen to it the more I realize this may be music for early teenagers.
It was fun, nothing special
Not one of his best despite the title song but it was OK.
One great song, but that will still get you at three
Good album. He’s got a great rock voice.
If I wanted to listen to a musical, I would have
I’ll always remember hearing schools out when the school year would end. It’s a little cheesy but still fun. Rest of the album is very ok
Surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be.
I can't deny the influence of Alice Cooper. Growing up almost every adult I knew had a Cooper story. Blue Turk for example is incredible. After listening, I don't resonate with it as something I would listen to regularly but I wouldn't change the station if it came on.
Classic album with classic cuts. I have never listened to the entire album before. Cooper is not your average R&R lead singer
Very cool album, with lots of other instruments like piano! Love the cover art!
Alice Cooper is never mind blowing, but it is pretty fun.
I fully expected to give this two stars but it’s actually pretty good.
Great opening song but the rest is not great. 3 stars or C.
School blowing up and going to the circus is never going to be as cool as in 1972. 3+
6/10
not usually my cup of tea but not as loud as I thought. could almost function as background noise.
Half of this album is better than the titular song, the other half is not great. I want to shout out the guttercat song as being one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Favorite song: Blue Turk
This is very much a rock opera rather than an old school hard rock album, which is less to my tastes. I'm struggling a bit with prog in general, it's phenomenally self indulgent, however this did have a darker side to it's rock musical sound which was more enjoyable than most of its ilk.
It was okay
Not the shock rock people think. Decent album with even some jazzy notes Myers but I prefer Billion dollar babies to this one
Favorite Track: School’s Out
4th April 2026. 3pm. I'm not a big fan of his voice sorry :( Otherwise the album is not bad ^^ /10
Schools out is a great toon. Rest is ok
First time listen Seems like an album about school written by a group of guys who were born onto this earth already old and have no actual knowledge of what school is. Lame lyrically. Sonically sometimes good. Favorite tracks: Blue Turk, Grande Finale Least favorite: Luney Tune, Alma Mater 3/5
It is probably not their best, but the title track is iconic by itself. Overall, I quite enjoyed the album. 8/10 [KEEP]
This had so much more variety. Surprisingly theatrical variety, but I dug it. Kicked off by such an epic perennial.
Far from horrible, far from interesting, it’s kind of music you wouldn’t recall after 90s
Somewhat grungy rock with a focus on school, being a delinquent and maybe being a horny cat. Seems fairly straight forward, not bad but nothing that grabbed me in a big way outside of School's Out which is partially due to movie nostalgia.
I was expecting this to be douchey shock rock, but the music is more interesting, theatrical, and jazzy than I expected. There’s a lot of variety, from blues, jazz, and rock to elements of Broadway. It’s not my type of music, but I can respect that there is musicality and creativity here, even if some of it is pretty cheesy.
6/10… glam rock / blues rock / *1972
Pretty good but also pretty forgettable.
Nothing special, nothing terrible. Just mid.
First Listen; 3.5; Enjoyed this more after listening than I thought I would. Certainly feels a little cheesy, but the music is interesting enough and not just straight-forward rock and roll throughout the album. There's also more diversity in the instruments and rhythm than I was expecting. Feels like glam rock influences along with some prog/synth stuff. Favorite Track: Public Animal #9
I like when he pretended to be a cat and then sang a song from West Side Story
More subdued than I was expecting
Omituinen otus.
yeah no
I don't know what I was expecting to hear, but this wasn't it. It was okay I guess, but nothing amazing. The title track is a banger, but nothing else really stood out. Three stars.
I'd totally have been into Alice Copper when this came out. It very much a theatrical/vaudevillian vibe. I dig it well enough and would enjoy it if it came on again, but probably wouldn't seek it out.
Good, surprisingly interesting bass parts.
Of course I know Alice, but I never listened to a full record. Glad I did. It was very theatrical which makes sense as he is a very theatrical live performer. I’m torn about rounding down but I think that’s only fair. It’s easily 3.5 but not four. The drummer on this record is what stood out for some reason.
I was amazed to find a couple very nice teacks amidst all this adolescent noise.
That first track, Shool's Out will never not remind me of Dazed and Confused. Man what a great movie. The rest of the album was okay. 3 stars
I appreciate the west side story bits most
Great bass player
Very old, sounds old but not bad at all.
Starting off with one of the best guitar riffs I've discovered recently. The title track is certainly going in my "best of the 70s" playlist for that riff alone. The solo and bassline are also worth shoutouts. Incredibly groovy with a dark, solemn undertone. The lyrics are a bit goofy, possibly to the point of taking away from the song's quality. Still, that duo – School's Out / Luney Tune – is near unbeatable. The drop in quality throughout the rest of the album would go on to prove my theory. Not that later tracks aren't good. Blue Turk takes a turn into small-combo-jazz, including a sweet instrumental over varied harmonies in the middle section. My Stars is much the same, except with keyboards instead of brass. Musically, Alice Cooper's all over the place, but still manages to sound like one consistent band (albeit a Rolling Stones imitation band). Normally I don't provide input on lyrics unless they're terrible. So do with that what you will. But these lyrics... they're really something. Gutter Cat vs. The Jets has the first distractingly bad quality of poetry, and the fluttery bass and weird psychedelia SFX aren't enough to save it (in fact, they arguably make the track even harder to digest). "I went out cattin / Pussyfootin around / ... / Some feline beauty / Waved her tail my way / ... / She made my eyes bug out / Her tail stand up / And I ain't even in heat for a month" – ah. Not good. There's also: "Hey remember the time / We took that snake / And put down little Betsy's dress? / Now I don't think Miss Alexrod / Was much impressed". But hey, at least they're self-aware: "We can't even think of a word that rhymes" 3/5 Key tracks: School's Out, Luney Tune, Public Animal #9
Heard Before? Yup. Notes: - one song doth not an album make. especially if it's the first track. - "Gutter Cats" is perfectly bizarre and over the top. Exactly what I love about Alice Cooper. I sent it to all my cat loving friends. - lots of unexpected musical flourishes and genre experiments. - a big, bold, ridiculous closer wraps things up, but fails to fully deliver on the concept album schtick. - Beatles/Stones mashup "Alma Mater" reminds me that Alice is a more exciting and versatile singer than Mick, John or Paul. Verdict: I love this, but why are we listening to the fourth best Alice Cooper album? For one song? Listen Again? Maybe, just maybe. But I'm willing to bet "From the Inside" is not on this list, and it's my favorite.
Minder hard dan verwacht
I associate Cooper far more with the 80s than I do the 70s, but I don't know why? Regardless It's not really my style of rock. Schools out is fine as a track. The rest of the album is similarly. Enjoyed the west side story jets interlude. looking at the wider field I can give this no more than a 3, but also no less
If you liked it then, I guess you'll like it now.
Most of this album wasn’t for me, but rating higher because of the iconic titular track and surprise west side story homage.
I feel this is a lesson in one track an album does not make I appreciate the theme they go for its just not for me personally
2,5/5
Having only heard the title track, and not being the biggest fan of it either, this has always passed me by. First listen- wow! Like a prototype Bat out of Hell. Will revisit this one. 3
As a teacher I think this album is highly inappropriate.
Appreciated the short runtime of 37 minutes, but the content was a departure from what I expected. While the title track is the hard rock anthem I anticipated, it serves as a gateway to a surprisingly avant-garde and experimental journey. I was caught off guard by the sheer variety of genres, ranging from the brassy, "horn-infested" jazz of "Blue Turk" to the overt musical theater influences in "Gutter Cat vs. The Jets". What stands out most is how the album functions as a cohesive, theatrical concept piece. The production by Bob Ezrin seamlessly blends psychedelic blues, orchestral swells, and progressive elements in tracks like "My Stars". It successfully shatters my preconceived stereotype, revealing a band with immense musical range and humor. Ending on "Grande Finale", the record left me with a much deeper appreciation for their artistry.
+School's Out
3.5/4. Sold Hard Rock, Glam Rock album.
i enjoyed this more than i thought i would! solid album
Why was this ever part of the Satanic Panic? It's good, nothing special
Feel pretty neutral on this music-wise - mostly basic hard rock with some extra stuff sprinkled in. I do find adult men singing about being in school a bit cringe though
A buddy let me borrow this so I could record it to a cassette tape back in high school. I really liked it back then, and today I listened to it for the first time in over 50 years. It was a great trip down memory lane, and I really enjoyed hearing it again. I think most of my fondness stems from nostalgia though. I would like to give this 3.5 stars, but since I can’t I will settle on three because I don’t think it merits four. I recall did have fun hearing it again, though.
Always heard of Alice cooper , super edgy for his time , iconic
Yeah, it's alright!
Nothing was as good as the title track, but still an overall decent album. 3.5/5
This album was pretty interesting and fun. I didn't expect it to sound like it did, but it was pretty good. I wasn't blown away but I was expecting something a bit different knowing Alice Cooper.
It’s not that I wouldn’t expect Alice Cooper to be Musical Theatrey (look at him), but I was still surprised by the flavour of this. I’m never going to listen to it again, but I am going to give it a full extra star for managing to be a Somewhat Listenable Meatloaf, which I would have previously thought was impossible.
All over the place style wise. High point was the Beatles/bad finger like Alma mater, followed by low point of monday night football sounding grande finale
War nett.
Hatte was ganz anderes erwartet.
Cooper is a dreadful, sexist, lyricist and a weak singer but the music here is actually pretty great. The soft rock base veers off in all kinds of fun, unexpected, genre-bending directions with frequest flourishes of prog grandeur.
rock had to start somewhere i respect it
*School's out is a great song, but the album doesn't keep that momentum until the Grand Finale.
6/10
Duh! It's a Sunday...
Didn’t know any other Alice Cooper songs aside from the title track. Did not expect the horn sections and genre bending tunes. Definitely a happy surprise even if it’s not my cup of tea. Respect Mr cooper
reminded me of growing up
Weird stuff happening here but I liked it
School's Out is such a banger. It's a shame that the rest of the album can't keep up with it.
Alice Cooper is a spectacle show more than an album. The music is inconsequential and is the equivalent of putting Cirque du Soleil on here.
So if I only judged this by the title track it would clearly be 5 stars, but this is not how I do things here, and sadly I am only familiar with the title track despite loving Mr. Cooper. Will be a treat, but so far after listening to it once I have to say this is not the strongest offering from Mr. Cooper I have heard so far. Will probably need to grow on me, but at the moment between 3 and 4 stars and most likely 3.5 on RYM. The rest of the album could not be any different from the title track, even some jazz influences here, some cabaret which is pretty cool, but does feel a bit loose and undefined, on the 2nd listen still learning towards 3 stars. P.S. On 2nd listen I really like "Alma Mater" and closing instrumental track
I was kind of ready to hate this, and while it wasn't really my thing, I respect it for being a lot more varied than I was expecting. I liked the songs that were more laid back more than the 70's hard rock stuff.
Detroit muscle. Alice was more of a singles band than an album band...their original greatest hits is a powerhouse. Most importantly, WE CAN'T EVEN THINK OF A WORD THAT RHYMES!
Favorite track: Grand Finale - A swooning, orchestral finish to an album filled with juvenile lyrics that will be forever immortalized by the giant middle finger of the title track. Imagine Alice Cooper conducting this beautiful song. His face must have been so happy to know he was capable of such beauty amidst the snakes and leather bravado of his stage persona.
Decent listen.
Klassiker men kjedelig i lengden
Holy cow this was unexpected. I’ve never listened to Alice Cooper beyond what was played on the radio. Why was School’s Out released as the single when pretty much every other song on this album is better?
pretty solid but not my fav
The title track is the best and it's not even that awesome
Entertaining, moments of positive surprises.
353/1089 - I didn't realize Alice Cooper was the band's name and not the singer. Noticed some Bernstein quotes and it seemed eclectic overall but I wasn't a fan of the singer who's name is NOT Alice Cooper (but now is I think).
A good album, I liked School's Out the most.
Some artists are a listen to every album artists, some are greatest hits artists. Alice Cooper seems like the latter. This album is bolstered by the exceptional title track, then the rest is an odd hodgepodge that sounds like a musical. It's fine, but should I give props or take away props for copping 'West Side Story?' Top tracks; "School's Out," "Gutter Cats vs. The Jets"
--School's Out...the bass stands out to me here. otherwise it's a solid anthem at best. if the lyrics weren't so "rebellious" I doubt it would stand out much --Luney Tune...this is weird. I like the distorted guitar in the middle --Gutter Cat vs. The Jets...despite the unfortunate West Side Story references, this humps --Street Fight...a nice bass interlude --Blue Turk...an interesting, unexpected, and jazzy change of pace. not sure I totally dig it but it gives the album a new dimension --My Stars...didn't like the opening much but it starts kicking at the 90 second mark. a little long but fun --Public Animal #9...fun rocker but nothing special --Alma Mater...a 50s/60s heart throb pastiche. more fun --Grand Finale...a spacey instrumental. didn't love this listen but kudos to Alice Cooper for consistently surprising me
I think the only Alice Cooper song I heard before listening to this album was School's Out, which is the first track. I wasn't prepared for the rest of the album to veer into concept album/musical territory. Not my thing, but interesting album.
aren’t you a grown man
This actually surprised me, I expected to hate it but it was alright.
I enjoyed the bits of this album that didn't have any Alice Cooper i.e. all the instrumental bits.
It’s good but School’s Out is the obvious hit and where most of the production went. The rest is fun and probably better live.
Ended up being almost unnoticeable as background noise so a true 3
Men kun en banger her dessverre.
Schools Out e jo harry, men litt av ei åpningslåt. De to siste låten e de minst typiske Alice Cooper, men også de to beste. Alma Mater e faktisk dritfin. Hørt nyttårsaften 25🎆
was a favorite of mine as a kid in the ’70s—an unofficial announcement that summer had arrived. Until now, I’d never listened to the rest of the album, and I was surprised by how prominently horns feature in several tracks. It’s unmistakably a product of its era, very ’70s in sound and style, and overall an enjoyable listen.
I usually prefer The Sensational Alex Harvey Band when it comes to theatrical/performative rock, but this record is alright. It's nothing I imagine myself returning to listen, but It's short and somewhat sweet.

At first I thought this was a classic Rock album but then it kinda switched to a broadway show?
It has more variety than I thought it would have. In the end it fell short of being great in my opinion.
This is just so-so for me. The music is a 2, but +1 because Alice Cooper is a treasure.
Liked the music, some songs are a bit strange, but the general idea is good. Made me want to listen to more by them. 3,4/5.
His fifth album. Hard Rock. This wasn't the Glam Rock / Cheesy Rock I expected. It's Rock with aome Blues and Jazz sounds through it. Some fun lyrics and good riffs. The album is short, sharp and quite punchy. A lot of fun.
3 sterren.
A bit of a mixed bag, this one. In places, you can hear why Lydon did one of Alice's for his Pistols audition. Other bits are very theatrical, and others just plain weird (not a bad thing). I liked this more than I expected, but the eclecticism got a bit tiring after a while and I stopped really listening.
Music good lyrics about cat fights or maybe it was a very sophisticated metaphor I missed 🤔
Listens: 2.5 Standout Tracks: Blue Turk, Public Animal #9, School's Out (I guess) This is another one of those albums where the artist blows their load on the first song. School's Out is iconic, the titular track and its the first song on the album. The rest of the album isn't too bad, but there isn't really anything to noteworthy either, save for the instrumental section of Blue Turk. And certainly, there's nothing as shocking as Billion Dollar Babies "Raped and Freezin'" or "I Love The Dead". Honestly, the album kind of ends of a depressing note. the penultimate track sort of ends with "Coop" goes from reminiscing about highlights of the school year, to sort of calling out to all his friends at the end of the school year, hoping they'll keep in touch. He's sort of perpetually stuck in school, while everyone else is moving on - graduating. That's obviously the point, but its sort of a grim situation to find one's self in, and probably one that's also pretty familiar to most people; something you wish could last forever, but ultimately ends. I think I gave Billion Dollar Babies a 4. I am not sure that was correct. This is similar and its solid 3 material.
When this popped up, my preconceptions were that it would be a relatively unsophisticated hard rock album in the vein of something like AC/DC. I'm happy to have been proven wrong on that front, even if I'm not currently of the view that all of the ideas executed here are a resounding success. This album takes you on a journey through jazz rock, blues rock, prog, cabaret, and it even becomes somewhat theatrical at various stages, though few of the ideas ever seem to be fully embraced or locked into, resulting in a curious but fairly disorientating experience (maybe that was the intention). Alice Cooper's vocal style teeters on the threshold of becoming overbearing for me at points as well - not a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, though. This is an album that merits further exploration, and one that probably requires a degree of perseverance.
With the title track feeling a bit overplayed to me I wasn't sure what the album was going to be like but I was actually really impressed but also surprised by the West Side Story influences. Alma Mater was my stand out track as I was into the sound and the vocals managed to remind me of the Beatles but also of the sort of thing I could expect from Mike Patton
As with the other reviews, I was expecting this to be idiot rock like the opening track, but it's actually a much grander performance, and I would agree that it's more like a musical, which the insertion of West Side Story lyrics underlines. Ridiculous but fun. Honestly this is the edge of a four-star rating for me. But I think you would have been disappointed if you heard the title track on the radio and rushed out to buy the album in 1972.
Very theatrical, which I guess I should have expected from Cooper. Enjoyable enough but will never listen to this again
It's actually pretty listenable, but I still consider it a novelty album. The one song I give extra credit to is Blue Turk. I'm pretty sure this was mocking, Jim Morrison and the doors. And I'm here for it
Classic 70s rock. Every song feels different, Cooper hits his stride here
Fun I know this main song.
Some classic anthems with great riffs, wrapped in goth theatrics.
I really wish I liked this album more than I actually did. School's Out and Public Animal were really good tracks, but besides that it was a little all over the place. Cool sounds but a little too mixed for me to rate it higher then a 3 or 3.5.
3.5
Surprised by this one, did not expect it to be so groovy!
Starts with their most famous song, then continues on with what sounds like the soundtrack to a musical about the post high school experience
it was not horrible but not great either.
It's not what I thought it would be. I assumed the whole thing was like School's Out, but it's quite the variety.
Alice Cooper's legacy is built on his grotesque theatrics. He is a master of the ghoulish shock and awe performances. Sitting down with an entire album made me realize something a little deeper. This guy is just a straight up theater geek. It just makes so much sense now. I believe he's more influenced by Sondheim than he is by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I mean, Gutter Cats vs. The Jets is West Side Story in a back alley garbage can. None of this is a slight to his talent. If anything it's applause for using a historically lauded art form to present something deranged and destructive. While doing so, it's still dramatic and whimsical. The magic and fun is still present even if carried by his slimy growl. I wouldn't say this is my favorite offering from Alice Cooper. I find the titular song to be overplayed and uninspired. Once past that opening track, there is a lot of fun to be had.
Title track is great but apart from that...
Alice Cooper is great.
Like most people I was expecting this album to follow the tone of Schools Out so it was a surprise to find a varied sound throughout. Not unpleasant but of course everything is going to pale in comparison to the title track if it’s not strong enough a song on its own. Bit of a dip in the middle but finished strongly.
A good mix of styles and ultimately a glam rock album rather than anything heavier.
It’s a theatrical and often slightly silly take on a few genres. Varied and entertaining enough, but sadly with just the odd shining light of musical novelty. Personally I thought the last instrumental track was the most novel/interesting. They clearly didn’t share this sentiment given their future direction.
overraskende bra
Musical theatre for 70s edge lords
Way more fun than I was expecting. Some cool bass parts
klassiker. ganz nett
Not really my thing but like schools out
More varied and more theatrical than I expected, and I give it props for defying expectations; while it wasn’t a bad time, it wasn’t a particularly great one, either. I can’t dislike it, though.
fun for the Halloween period I'm listening to this at
I know Alice Cooper is theatrical, but I want expecting him to break out into a full-on showtune. Overall, not as bad as I was expecting.
Good music but don’t like rock that much
When school gets out for the summer, if this is not in your head, we probably don't have much to talk about.
I know Alice Cooper rarely gets much credit as a musician/artist, but it's still hard to deny the role he played alongside the likes of Kiss in carving the way for all sorts of dubiously-talented glam/metal bands to strut around in costumes and belt out forgettable tunes. And there's really nothing all that bad about this album, especially if you don't expect too much. Of course, there's also not a whole lot great about this album--it feels like a more mediocre version of a Meatloaf album. I wonder if it got included as the other Alice Cooper album in this collection simply for the iconic (and very relatable) "School's out" track? Either way, I can only hope "Billion Dollar Babies" is a bit more inspired.
Not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, and Cooper has a pretty good voice. I looked it up to see if this was his debut album (would've liked it even more then) and read this gem from wikipedia: "The vinyl record inside was wrapped in a pair of panties, though this was later discontinued as the paper panties were found to be flammable."
I liked it but was also slightly disappointed… i expected to love it
3 estrelas
Decent album with one banger on it
This is dad rock that aspires to be original. You can feel Bob Ezrin's influence, while the jazz elements embellish the album.
I have a good buddy who refers to Alice Cooper as thin gruel, let's see if he's correct. Hard not to listen to the title track and not think of Dazed and Confused. And it's not a bad song overall, it's a classic and hard not to like. The rest, I can see where this was somewhat shocking or heavy back in the day, but not against something legit like Black Sabbath. It's not a bad album, I just don't think I'd want to listen to it again. My Stars is the only other track that I really like. Got a bit of a driving beat, some cool guitar. Public Animal #9 is good, too. There are bits and pieces throughout this album that I like and wish they'd just go more with THAT vibe but it invariably goes off in another direction. Overall still pretty cool and I can see why people like it but it's just not that great to me. It's not thin gruel, but it's alright.
Meh
A lot of different sounds here than what I was expecting. Surprising in some ways.
Very good, though some of the imagery is very dated, and wasn't great even when it came out.
its quaint and funny that this was considered shock rock. loved how jazzy it got
This is #day419 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… It's October 1st today, so school's pretty much in full swing, as is the autumn. Otherwise, typical early '70s hard rock I wouldn't mind hearing on a classic rock radio. Loving the sax in "Blue Turk," though. There's another Alice Cooper record to go, and, surprise, surprise, it's not Killer. Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day420.
Eclectic and fun, drawing from a wide variety of musical genres.
Meh
Just don’t really like Alice cooper that much. Not hard to listen to but also not that interesting
Super cool record. Some really great bass riffs
The first song is so good that you almost don’t even realize the rest of it isn’t!
rock. some spacey. brass? ok.
A very surprising album (in a good way). As a native Phoenician I know Cooper from the titular song here and the restaurant he used to own next to the Diamondbacks' stadium. I thought based on that song this would be annoying, bad butt rock. But it was a lot closer to the theatricality of Meatloaf, which is way more my speed. This came shockingly close to 4 stars for me.
Interesting album could revisit on a weird day
Artsy
Another nice surprise. I was expecting Schoils Out and 8 sound alike, but there was orchestration, interesting song structures, and a sense of performance without being self-regarding. I am not a fan of West Side Story, so to get me enjoying The Jets was quite a surprise. Not quite strong enough to really recommend, but much better than expected. Strong 3
This was a surprisingly varied album, but mostly pretty weird. It felt like the titular song followed by a random hodge-podge of other stuff.
rock.
Nice to see some Canadian content on the list. Solid classic rock/glam sound, with great enthusiasm from Alice. A good listen.
This was NOT what I was expecting from Alice Cooper. Who knew he was in to show tunes???
Wow I really thought I was going to hate this because Alice Cooper is, in fact, not a woman and the first song is just something I can’t hear objectively, I’ve just heard to too many times to the point where it means nothing and I hate it and it’s not a real song. But then Blue Turk came on and I was like… hold on… what’s this? That song is cool. So is Grande Finale. Not sure I would listen to the rest again.
I liked the closing track, and how it was named such as being a closing track
Far jazzier than I expected. Pretty smooth all the way through. I didn't think any of the songs were bad, but there was obviously only one popular one from the album. Not something I'd reach for.
Wasn't expecting to like this, since Alice Cooper has been a weird old dude for basically my whole lifetime. But it was honestly pretty good.
I was pleasantly surprised by how musical this was; having only head the title track before I was expecting "dumb rock" but Blue Turk and others were very creative and cool to hear
Best Song: My Stars. I really liked that ascending piano run. Worst Song: Public Animal #9. I cringe at these kinds of songs whose core conceit is "look at what a bad boy I am". Overall: Surprisingly fun and jazzy, given the image that Alice Cooper presents. The opening track is a meme, but the rest is actually quite solid. It is funny to see how what was once considered scandalously edgy now feels like the safest of dad-rock, but we can't blame Alice for the passing of time.
The hits feel like the best part but it is a very solid rock album
Pretty good classic rock album. The titular track is the most well-known, of course, and is probably still played thousands of times in May/June as kids leave school for their summer break.
Interesting album. Not sure I loved it, but some strong songs, and I think I liked the ones that weren't released the most.
Annoyingly I can’t give this a 3.5 and it’s also not a 3.75, so doesn’t earn a 4. Some great 70s power rock in here and a very interesting back half.
It was a solid good album but not great.
Just an all time classic - signature sound - almost like a novelty act.
Interesting but a bit odd
I had never listened to a full Alice Cooper album before. But this kind of felt like it was carried by the single. Not a lot else felt particularly memorable
What kind of bump in streams does Alice get every year in May and June when everyone plays this song on the last day of class?
Much much weirder than I thought it was going to be. Not bad either. Mostly.
meh
What I was expecting: Boilerplate Alice Cooper early 70s rambunctious and rebellious rock and roll. What I heard: A much more diverse musical soundscape and styles where after the first two tracks, Cooper throws out the manual and just does whatever the hell he wants. And it mostly works. It was also nice to get served to us in approximately 37 minutes.
Pretty good overall. Sometimes weird and off-kilter, but that's refreshing.
I like the opening song
It’s kind of felt jazzy at times and very instrumental. I think there were like two hits on there for me so it’s a solid album imo. I can see how it’s influential, but it just isn’t of my genration I can’t see eye to eye with this one entirely.
As others have said, this takes you on quite a surprising journey. It gets pretty jazzy and theatrical, complete with West Side Story references. I'm not letting my heart rule my head, though, just because it was a nice surprise; I reckon the songs are only "mid" (as my son would say).
I liked it because it was so weird. Would be 3.5 if that was a choice.
Camp schlock rock. Good fun
Interesting enough but I wouldn't come back to it. Alice coopers band has more chops than I knew
Nice rock album, kind of cabaret style with entertaining lyrics which sometimes did not age well...
I appreciate the album, but outside of the title track and a couple others, it's not groundbreaking. Very performative work, solid guitar work. Middle of the road. 3/5
This album captures the sound of the time perfectly. The guitars and drums chugging along to the screeching vocal of Alice Cooper cut through any speaker setup. It felt weird playing “School’s Out” in August instead of May. 3
Opens with a triumphant classic rock radio staple and then immediately descends into five tracks of the weirdest shit your ever heard. Ends strong though.
I’d heard the title track a lot before listening to the album. I didn’t realize it was a concept album of sorts. Very theatrical in its execution.
A bit of a hit and miss kinda album.
Aside from the title track, School's Out is an okay album. Not terrible at all and there are some really good tracks here. My Stars is by far the best song here but there are far better albums than this one but because School's Out is such an iconic song everyone seems to gravitate to this as Alice's best. There are some clunkers here. Blue Turk, and even Gutter Cats vs. The Jests among those that just seem to ramble on. I like Alice, but I think Pretties For You and Killers are far better than this.
5.5/10 Not what I was expecting. Not really sure what to think of this. Don't like the vocals. Highlight: School's Out
Pretty fun! I like how theatrical Alice Cooper is, and I enjoyed it, but it's not necessarily something I want to listen to _all the time_. But every so often, it's great!
Not for me
Did not expect all the variety having only known the title track, decently fun listen, not bad
Other than the opening track (which is a banger) the album doesn't do anything terribly interesting until the final track. Everything else is fine.
Fun little album. Nothing groundbreaking here but nothing unenjoyable either.
Solid hard rock, would be otherwise indistinct if not for a little Cooper flair and some added horns and theatrical bits.
Buen álbum. Mitico. Me sorprendió Blue Turk.
nice enough
Not really what I expected based on what I thought I knew of Alice Cooper from pop culture. A lot of it is very theatrical and even silly (like the meowing cats). I think Public Animal #9 was my top track besides the titular one. And just a shade over 30 minutes which is always nice.
This is a lot tamer and almost more childish than I would expect, knowing Alice Cooper only by their stage reputation. Although I'm only just now finding out that the band is related to but seperate from the singer. Choosing to cover a West Side Story song was such a choice though, I loved it. Other than that I think the album was mildly interesting but pretty forgettable, and even after reading about it I don't really understand why it's on this list.
