Ordentliches aber unspektakuläres Rockalbum.

Kunne jeg godt lide

was ok

Probably wouldn't listen again but it was ok some cool moments

metal cañero

It's definitely not what you'd expect, and I like the variety of it all. It's just a bit, meh. Nothing really stand out at me. I did enjoy Blue Turk though

Surprised by this. It was not bad.

Highlight "School's out". Den Rest kannte ich nicht. Es sind ein paar Songs dabei, die ich vom Sound nicht mit Alice Cooper in Verbindung gebracht hätte. Spannend zu hören. 3/5

My Stars gefällt mir, Rest eher meh

this dude likes west side story, huh

When I first heard Alice Cooper compared to Marilyn Manson, I was a bit worried; not that Manson is a terrible artist, but his edgy lyrics and persona do not rub me the right way. However, this album is (at least from my view) not edgy at all. It’s got some commentary on society—any good album should—but it’s thoughtful about it and not the gritty Zach Snyder style. Sorry I just saw Superman and he was on the mind. Anyways, the hard rock of this record. Eh. It seems very accessible, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. One could easily say the same thing about Black Sabbath being a wide open door to metal. It’s metal, kinda, but like, only for people who consider Nirvana metal. God I keep getting off track. So yeah, there’s a lot of easy listening throughout this album. Songs like the title and opening track, Schools Out, have the hooks, catchiness, and just right amount of guitar solo to make anyone feel like they’re into rock. However, I wish there was more to work with, particularly with the guitar. There was never anything really special or unique going on. The singing too, though good and very full of range (such as on Gutter Cat vs. The Jets), doesn’t really offer anything new that you wouldn’t see better done from Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones. And let’s talk about The Rolling Stones. Public Animal #9 just sounds like a Rolling Stones track. Alma Mater, too, has some of the same style and pizzaz of Beggars Banquet and perhaps later Beatles as well. I wonder if the cover art is inspired by Beggars Banquet, mayhaps. But yeah, I see the influence and appreciate it, yet it only makes me wanna relisten to some of my favorite Mick Jagger and John Lennon and Paul McCartney songs. Lord knows George Harrison has better guitar solos. Again, this album is more of Hard Rock 101, nothing crazy. To give credit where credit is due, however, the theatrics do offer some fun and creativity throughout. You have the interesting, wordless storytelling of Street Fight and Grande Finale, the la-da-das of My Stars, and some crazy poetry work of school and prison life as seen on Alma Mater. It’s more Glam Rock than Hard. I also have to say, I love the bluesy vibes from Blue Turk. Probably my favorite track. So yeah, this album is definitely good for those interested in delving into some hard rock or perhaps metal, yet who are scared to check it out. Though I’d more so recommend Black Sabbath for that. And I’d more so recommend Rolling Stones or Beatles for the vibes. And I’d more so recommend Pink Floyd for the theatrics or T. Rex or David Bowie for the glam. Ok I’m gonna go listen to them instead.

Pretty good. I thought it would be better, given its status as a classic. The title track is obviously iconic, the others are kinda wallpaper.

A cornerstone of 70s glam rock but still not as beautifully crafted as Ziggy Stardust and other classics. But the weird thing is that tomorrow im going to attend a summer program. so listening to the title track that is really against education on the day before returning to "school" is such a weird experience. but anyway i wish my old school can be blown to pieces. 3/5

Good, title track is worse than I remember though

01) School's Out - 8,5 02) Luney Tune - 7,5 03) Gutter Cat vs. the Jets - 6,5 04) Street Fight - 5,0 05) Blue Turk - 7,0 06) My Stars - 6,5 07) Public Animal #9 - 6,5 08) Alma Mater - 7,0 09) Grande Finale - 7,5 TOTAL: 6,88 (69/100)

Better than expected TBH. Start strong….

The old times when the first song on the album was a banger and then the rest is just OK.

I just listened to Neil Young, this should be interesting. Honestly this wasn’t that bad.

-hm, i liked this one more than I thought i would. it’s no doubt a little corny but also kind of a vibe -i know nothing about Alice Cooper aside from the name but i was definitely not expecting the solid blues rock sound. Blue Turk is a really good song, i had to play it a few times actually -Favorites are Gutter Cat vs. The Jets and Blue Turk

Ouais sympa mais sans plus

Glam Rock quite entertaining. Some tunes resembling the Beatles at their Rockest. Medium rating for me

There are some cool bits, but mostly theatre kids making music for theater kids.

Kinda annoying and dumb, but also kinda good at the same time

Quick rock album that sticks to its theme. Has some different elements that work well for a rock album.

Ya this kinda rules

Pretty interesting music. the jazzy song was very different for being Alice Cooper High 3/5

Title track is great rest of the album fine.

Flere sterke låter her. Og en del rart. Hører jazzen helt hjemme her? Håper på flere Cooper-albumer her etterhvert.

Pretty solid and more varied than expected.

Holy shit what a ride. I think there was a moment about halfway through the record when I thought Apple Music had fucked up and accidentally shuffled to Kansas or Genesis. Then I was listening to The Doors or Joni Mitchell. Then back to Alice Cooper. This album is a trip and absolutely took me by surprise. Does it nail every moment? No, there are some choruses or songs that felt a bit more chaotic than enjoyable. But overall it fucking rocks and the instrumentation as well as Alice Cooper’s vocals are excellent. Highlights are School’s Out, Blue Turk and Public Animal #9. Listen to this record.

A lot more West Side Story than I was expecting

I like Alice Cooper, I don’t love them. Having some West Side Story was a surprise but a welcome one.

Interesting mix of rock and musical theater music. Too bad I'm not into music theater :( 3/5

First and last tracks are best. Vintage Alice.

Fav: Blue Turk Least Fav: Public Animal #9 More varied than expected for blues rock

A lot more interesting and wacky than I expected- as others have noted. Not sure it quite hangs together but nevertheless refreshingly bonkers

really a lot better than i expected surprisingly not half bad

School's Out was a banger, then the rest of the album happened and it was fine, yet ultimately forgettable. It's albums like this where I feel like the author and folks he collabed with include albums for nothing more than a single song that they think deserves praise, and not the whole album.

Classic rock and fun summer song

As someone who only really knows Alice Cooper from his hits (and his excellent appearance in Wayne’s World) and tended to view him as extremely boring, I was pleasantly surprised by how odd and digressive this album is, playing with a bunch of difference sounds and genres from psych rock to Broadway. That same scattershot approach prevents it from being particularly good, but it is at the very least interesting.

It was ok, noting amazing.

Fairly enjoyable if a little Inconsistent, I think AC and company can make the more fun type of classic hard rock with a blues rock thing by simply having more personality and more going on in song than trying to stick to one mood all the way thru. I don't love everything about this but I do enjoy it!

School’s Out // Public Animal #9 // Alma Mater // 2.5/5

Not really what I was expecting. Never knew Alice Cooper was way more chilled before he started doing heavy rock. Definitely worth the listen but not really my type.

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I thought Alice Cooper would have been one of those old guys I didn't like. There seems to be a theme here where I think an old band is overrated but then when I take the time to actually listen to the entire album, it's actually good! I enjoyed my time with it.

- do love the Alice Cooper horror vaudeville glam rock vibe - love the meowing. narrative songs like this have really died out - electronic synth spectacular also - he was 24 when he wrote this which is really quite interesting - most of these are, but this is truly an Album, not just a collection of songs

3.3 2x

Better than I expected, but some of the hard rock stuff is just kind of eye-rolling to me.

At the end of every academic year Alice Cooper blares across the halls over countless schools in America as the doors are kicked open allowing the ultimate liberation from painful homework, constant attitude and unreasonable expectations….and that’s just what the teachers feel! It’s easy to forget that Alice Cooper was not only the first “Shock Rocker” but was there in the beginning of hard rock/metal. Key songs were, of course, Schools Out, but also Glitter Cats v The Jets, and My Stars. I love the story this entire album tells. This is a classic that should get more recognition as an album rather than a song.

Random thoughts: * this is a little bit like Frank Zappa * Blue Turk is cool jazzy-rock tune that I listened to several times. * School’s Out is a fun song. I loved blasting this song on the last day of school with my kids. Embarrassing them thoroughly. Also, Another Brick in The Wall is a good one for blasting on the last day of school. * Overall this was more interesting than I expected. * It is still weird that Alice Cooper was the band name and then the guy took the name later. He was just Vincent the lead singer at first. This doesn’t make sense in my brain.

Didn't do anything for me.

Although we’ve heard “School’s Out” (the song) millions of times, this is the first time hearing all the other tracks on the album. None of them are as good as the title track, but there are a few good songs on the record. i enjoyed “public animal #9”.

A very good pick for the last day of classes! Alas, would that school were truly out forever. It turns out Alice Cooper's views are pretty bad, but I always liked him as a vh1 talking head. I feel like, as these things go, I didn't really dislike school, but nevertheless the song 'School's Out' always spoke to me. Also, nobody uses pencils or books anymore. Really makes you think. "School's out completely" is a wild last line. I did not expect the West Side Story interlude, but I like it. The album is cohesive and pretty good. Solid cover. To me, feels more recent than it is. It's a 3.5 -- not quite 4 territory.

Cool and snotty midwestern hard rock

My parents were Alice Copper fans but I'm not sure they ever played this one, though Schools Out must be his biggest hit. It was quite rough and ready, sounded more like a debut than a fifth album. Didn't really have the spooky pageantry that I would normally associate with him. It was okay, but just okay, don't think anything really impressed. I'm sure there are good Alice Cooper albums out there but we haven't had one yet. 2.5.

Just okay. I expected to enjoy it more.

Yeah it's not bad. Exactly what you think it'll be. 70's "hard" rock with a pop edge. The Jet Song caught me out of nowhere which is funny because my friend that loves Alice Cooper and says it was the best live show he ever saw hates anything jazz related.

Alice broke ground with his macabre persona and grim lyrics. True performance rock, not much more. Vocals are not good, and the band is average, playing mostly simple notes. Having said that, School’s Out was the party anthem of May and June, played loud, sung with gusto and pleasure. A signal of the coming summer. No sweeter music to a young boy’s ears.

Listening to two Alice Cooper albums back to back made for an interesting comparison! Million Dollar Baby felt camp/theatrical, whereas School's Out feels like a typical rock album. I enjoyed the songs that felt jazzy and let the instruments shine. My favorites were blue turk and public animal #9.

I'm Swimming In Blood Like A Rat On A Sewer Floor 1001 Albums Generator 16 (04/22/2025) Two Alice Cooper albums in a row, huh? If you're curious, the odds of that happening at this point in the list (given that there are only 2 of them on the list, and I already had done 14 albums) is 1 in 577,275. The odds of this Alice Cooper double header happening on THE DAY that the band gets back together to release new music for the first time in over 50 years feels astronomical. I guess I gotta go buy a lottery ticket now. Anyway, School's Out was released in 1972 and directly precedes yesterday's album, Billion Dollar Babies. That album surprised me with its relatively artsy sound and consistent quality outside of the singles. How does School's Out compare? The opening title track is one of Alice Cooper's most iconic songs. Played by quasi-rebellious teens across the anglosphere throughout the month of May, even 50 years later, School's Out is an iconic Proto-Punk anti-school tune. Released 6 years before Pink Floyd's similar Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2, School's Out was actually banned off of some radio stations for encouraging rebellion in children, which is how you know a song is good. I can't think of a more perfect song to be Alice Cooper's first major hit single. In the 70's, Alice Cooper was synonymous with shock and offense and is often called the Godfather of Shock Rock. As such, a single that rebels against the school system, one of the supposed pillars of Western civilization, was a perfect way to introduce people to Alice Cooper. Spoiler alert - no other song on this album nearly hits the highs of the opening track. This isn't to say there aren't great moments. Blue Turk is my next favorite song. It is surprisingly jazzy and features an awesome sax solo and super fusion-y electric piano sounds throughout. It also has a bassline that is totally inspired by walking basslines of old school jazz. Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets is a cool almost proggy song. I love the changes that happens throughout. The first one is about halfway through where the song becomes almost tribal with just drums and a picked bass. Then the song picks up to a 12/8 jam with a cool, sliding synth line. I'm not sure which synth this is, but it sounds like something I would mess around with on FL Studio. The second side is a bit weaker but still features some interesting moments, such as the growling, almost wordless vocals at the end of Public Animal #9 and the shoutout to Camelback High and Cortez High, two local high schools in Phoenix, on Alma Mater. As I alluded to, the second half of this album does fall off in quality. I find all three of the last songs to be mostly forgettable for different reasons. Public Animal #9 has great energy but not much substance behind it. Alma Mater has lyrics that are honestly pretty moving; it captures the feeling of leaving high school, and the uncertainty that comes along with it. I think of it as the Yin to the title track's Yang. Although the lyrics are good, the song is set to a slower, mostly acoustic number, which is not a style that I think Alice Cooper does particularly convincingly. I do like the doo-wop backing vocals. The final song is a perfectly acceptable instrumental, but begs the question a bit by declaring itself "Grande". School's Out is a good album. It is not as consistent as Billion Dollar Babies, but it does feature what is perhaps Alice Cooper's finest song in the title track. This, along with some other interesting moments are enough to bring this album to a 3.5 for me, rounded down to a 3. Please no more glam rock tomorrow. Favs: School's Out Blue Turk My Stars Least Fav: Alma Mater

Production: 3.5/5 Lyricism: 2.5/5 Sound: 3/5 Enjoyment: 2/5 Overall: 2.7/5

I'd heard the hits before, but I don't think I've listened to a full Alice Cooper album before. It was more than I expected, and I can see why he's still cranking out albums as of last year.

Pretty fun, but not totally into it.

Lots of variety in sounds on this album. Alice was never afraid to go where his creative mind led him. Good stuff, but isn't something that I would cite as a classic.

Opening song is a blast! Rest doesn't have the same quality unfortunately...

🎧Starts off strong with School’s Out and Luney Tune. Doesn’t follow through. What’s with the West Side Story “when you’re a jet” shit?

Man, hard rock is weird. Why are a group of 20-something rockers making a concept album about high school? Why is there a West Side Story song crossed with feline furry play (pre-empting Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats)? Once I stopped reeling from the camp absurdity of it, the album is pretty enjoyable in its eclectic silliness. The music is pretty varied too. There's a piano, a jazzy brass moment, an electric organ at one point. There are some ballads and some instrumental tracks, as well as the rocking tracks. Musicianship is solid. Great bass playing, and the vocals are pretty enjoyable unlike most hard rock groups I've heard. This style of music is a fairly long way from resonating with me, but I can appreciate this one for its strengths. 3.5*

not my favorite Alice album. this better mean welcome to my nightmare and Alice Cooper goes to hell are still on this list

This was a lot and certainly not my vibe. School's in for me, sorry Mr. Cooper. I understand why people like it, but I just will never listen to this again.

School's Out rocks too hard for a song about school getting out

Old school rock vibes, feels like an episode out of Supernatural. Almost as if I’m sitting in the car with Dean Winchester himself and I’m not mad about it. Love some of the jazzy accompaniments, as well as the many guitar solos. Love the catchy riffs. Great album for a road trip with the windows open on a hot breezy day.

Was going to give a 2 but the finale was grand

Kind of unimpressed. It’s not bad but I also can’t remember anything outside the hits

Pretty mixed. Some smashhit, but also cheesy tracks. And Bigband sound?!

Schools out

1 good song and 33 minutes of filler. Weird album.

Alice Cooper-Schools Out ☆☆1/2 [#265] Bombastic rock. A bit cheesy at times. I think it's supposed to emulate a musical, but it just doesn't really work. Highlights: "School's Out" (classic riff rocker), "My Stars" (some nice piano and guitar work), "Public Animal #9" (Stonesy rocker) Notable: "Gutter Cat v. The Jets" (Stonesy vibe to the music at first but then it interpolates "When You're a Jet" from West Side Story and goes off the rails.), "Blue Turk" (reminds me of "Stray Cat Strut".), "Alma Mater" (weird filter on vocals, seems like it's parodying a 50s doo-wop tune), "Grand Finale" (a very 70s sounding instrumental)

Prettyinteresting

Überraschung, viel besser als gedacht oder befürchtet.

I’m torn between a two and a three. It is classic and there are some good driving music in it. It’s just not my favorite. So I’m torn. But I feel generous today so I’ll give it a three.

cool album, mix of pretty cool music probs wouldn’t listen again tho.

I'm not really into it now, but I suspect if I was a teenager in the 70's I would've loved it.

pretty good

While the title track is an all time classic, the rest of the album doesn't really follow through... I'm actually a fairly big fan of Alice Cooper, his approach was truly unique for the time, and he influenced a lot of other acts to come, but many of his records have one or two great songs, and the rest is filler. This was unfortunately quite common in the 1970s and 1980s.

Not my thing but this was pretty enjoyable strroong 3

What a strange album. Showtunes, rock, instrumentals. The parts just don't fit together. I like a few songs and others but I can do without the goofy West Side Story stuff. And we've all heard the title song a million times.

It is ironic and strange to listen to a song like School's Out as a full grow adult. Obviously, I'm not exatly the target group anymore. I can relate, not exactly to the (simple) lyrics, but the energy of the music - there's a powerful riff underlying. Besides, one would have to admit that this is the only outstanding song on the record. If I remember correctly, it was also the major single success for Alice Cooper. The remaining tracks are nowhere close. In particular the sound is dusty, but this is hardly a surprise as the record was released 50 years ago, and recording technology has much improved since. I quite like the arrangement of the last track feat. brass, I guess owing to producer Bob Ezrin, who used similar sounding arrangements with other artists. So once again, I guess the recording was influential and groundbreaking at the time of release, but today it sounds dated and forgettable. I'm not going to listen to this again.

Known about this album most of my life but never really gave it a listen because the bit single was played out by the time I finished 7th grade. However, this album really caught me off guard. Some very interesting arrangements, jammy blues and jazz flares and not the dark heavy rock you'd have expected from Mr Cooper. A pleasant surprise

This feels like another one that was probably groundbreaking when it was new, but is now Perfectly Fine

Heads up for the first record I ever bought! Bits of this stand up well, bits are standard ‘Alice trying to be shocking’. I like the Street Fight/Gutter Cats vs The Jets bit.

Ok, it's a good album. I never really got into Alice Cooper. It's an old heavy metal album. Pretty good, nothing really objectionable.

Alice Cooper pictures himself as a Jellicle Cat whose parts were cut in the final edit.

Not as bad as i expected

Not his best album and he is better live.

It's not bad. I've never been a huge fan of Alice's music. He seems like a cool guy, though. Blue Turk isn't a bad song. The Finale was relatively Grand. 3.5*?

Of course, you know the title track. It's always featured whenever there's a flash back to 1972 / Glam Rock. It's a great single, and above criticism. The rest of the album.... well. It pales in comparison. I hear no reason to listen to the album again.

prior to listening to this album, I really only knew School's Out (the song) from Guitar Hero. It was cool to listen to this album. When reading the description, Alice Cooper was described as 'Shock Rock', and maybe that would have been true in 1972, with his crazy make up and probably weird presence, but it doesn't hold up in 2025. I thought the Gutter Cat track was an interesting take on West Side Story, but didn't really understand how it fits in with the rest of the album. Is it supposed to be about a kid that drops out of school and joins a life of crime? another listen may be necessary, but for now this will sit at a 3.

I think I’m feeling nice today because I was tempted to rate this one a four. Really enjoyed it! It fits my standard for three stars due to it having a 5 star song in schools out, followed by a bunch of pleasant but not amazing songs. Also appreciate it for the length. Good job Arice!!

Not bad, but I'm not going to take anything away from this album besides the title song. "School's Out" is an awesome song that has seated itself properly in history. The rest of the songs are varied enough that I could see why someone would really like this album, but it's pretty mediocre for me.

It's fine

Grande Finale is a great tune. Rest ok 3/5

This is so stupid. If the Beatles teamed up with black Sabbath to write a musical. It's terrible, but Alice Cooper needs to be on this list so this is probably the one to do it.

Ok ish

Of course the title track is an all-time-banger. The rest of the album is o.k. but maybe sounds a bit aged to me.

Decent album, but wasn’t my favorite.

Not a bad album, Cooper’s levity is enjoyable and because of the short album length does not get old. I would give it a 3.5 if I could.

Surprisingly good. In general, I’m not a big fan of his voice but it was decent on this album

well go figure, this was not what I expected & actually enjoyed the listen. very surprised at the variety of sounds among the tracks.

Surprisingly fun and varied for a heavy album of its time. There's creativity here and not just anger.

Aged 8 I developed an unlikely love for Alice Cooper's song Poison. That and School's Out were the only of his songs I knew before listening to this, so this album was a big surprise. I was expecting hair/glam metal and dark lyrics, but what I got was a variety of styles that decidedly don't rock. Fun at times, but ultimately a bit too camp

Was ok but I fell asleep listening to it. That may be more about me than Alice.

It's fine. Not my thing.

Average Rock album, int de bästa 1972 har att bjuda på. Har sina moments

As everyone else is saying, this is unexpected. It doesn’t quite come together as a listening experience for me though. Could imagine some sort of stage should would be fun though. Want to give it 3.5

The title track of School’s Out is an all-time classic, undeniably one of Alice Cooper’s best. “Grande Finale” has a cool vibe, but beyond that, the rest of the album doesn’t really stand out. It’s worth a listen for the highlights, but the magic feels concentrated in just a few moments.

Weird. Not what I was expecting. Quite a bit of jazz and the elements in here.

Great fun throughout. School’s Out is such a strong song that it really carries the whole album though

Es muy bueno. Bien rock pero algo distinto, hay una búsqueda. Detallista, raro. Me gustó.

Pretty good

School's out is a great song, was a bit disappointed by the rest

Other than the iconic title track I was expecting another camp/glam 70s musical horrorshow experience but was happy to have those expectations dashed. This was varied and pretty good in places

After the opening track, I was expecting more of the same... how wrong I was. Turned out to go in many different directions, genres and theatrics.

Another classic.

The last two songs of the album were the most interesting, to be honest. It was pretty good overall, but not stellar.

Before the great Satanic Panic of the early 80's the magnificent theatrical schlock artist Alice Cooper put on notoriously deviant live shows. I never actually listened to his records, so hearing School's Out is quite a refreshing revelation. The band were not just provocateurs (like Marilyn Manson), but talented and playfully subversive. In 1972 it seems like they could have veered off into glam punk, like New York Dolls, or into parodies along with Weird Al, or could have been a proto-Rob Zombie making campy slasher films.

I was prepared to give this a 1 just given a preexisting impression of Alice Cooper, but honestly that was unfounded. This was a solid album - well-sequenced, diverse musical styles that all had a cohesive sound, and a pretty solid second half. Unfortunately, there were a few low points: Luney Tunes, Gutter Cat, Street Fight and Public Animal #9 were less than impressive. I especially thought the west side story nods in the album were tacky. Grande Finale was a great closer. All around a net positive: 3.4/5 -> 3/5

Dad rock. Hearing rock version of west side story is funny

School’s Out is the most iconic track on the album. The rest don’t stand out as much.

This is OK without being anything particularly special. I listened a handful of times, but it was background music in the main and never really caught my attention.

Rock. Ok

With the exception of the title track, I wouldn’t call any of these songs outright classics. But they’ve got a bite, and Alice’s sardonic sense of humor is always appreciated.

Lotta scream lotta creativity

Lukewarm rock. Indifferent to most of the songs but liked some enough that I'll let my temporary generosity win out.

Achei legal! Não achei ultrapassado! Vou ouvir mais!

this guy's weird. school is indeed out forever though

3.5 surprisingly entertaining.

This is on the list for only the titular song. Not really that great of an album otherwise. Just kinda meh. Great titular song though!

Interesting that he was also a denizen of Max’s Kansas City. The whole album deserved more praise.

There was some stuff on here I hadn't heard before. Alice Cooper is basically just a weirdo theatre kid at heart and I appreciate that.

This selection surprised me. He has some great songs and I know his early work is respected, but I have the image of him singing "Poison" which is one of his few hits still getting airplay, it's even popular with the college boys today (they play it at tailgates!). The title song is still a classic rock radio staple. I remember cranking it on the last day of school in like the 6th grade, it resonates with any kid stuck in the doldrums of school and waiting for summer break! Beyond "School's Out", none of these were radio friendly or made his greatest hits. This album could have used his classic (and my favor AC tune) "I'm Eighteen" to muscle it up a bit. It would have fit the theme too. He has a good singing voice when he's not trying to sound like a hard rocker, songs like "Alma Mater" highlight his ability to be more than just a glam rocker. The album isn't stuck in one gear, it has different flavors, highs and lows. I only skipped one song, "Gutter Cat vs The Jets", but overall I don't think it's Top 1001 worthy but I enjoyed getting to know it.

Great hits, as an album its OKish

Starting off with the title track, this is alternately raw and in-your-face and melodic, and is a fine introduction to the stylings of Mr Cooper. A most welcome entry into the rock canon.

Classic Alice

For as much as I've heard his name thrown around, I know very little about Alice Cooper. Surface-level research leads me to believe the guy had a very shocking stage persona (one supposedly inspired by Arthur Brown) - so I decided to scope it out for myself on YouTube while listening to this. To me at least, it seems he moreso conjured up the image of being shocking rather than actually being shocking if that makes sense (but then again I "researched" this for 5-minutes tops). In a way, it mirrors the way I felt about this album. For a "hard-rock" record it sure isn't very "hard", and it's quite messy. Alice Cooper himself, as a vocalist and lyricist, while not super special, is the standout here. His voice was built for this time and sound, and lyrically, while it doesn't quite live up to the already loose description "shock rock" (say for maybe the imagery of a school blowing up on the title track), is at least somewhat interesting. Quite a few songs are "anti-school" in their sentiments, thematically this whole thing is quite consistent and plays out almost like some sort of teenage flick. I quite liked 'Public Animal #9' which follows the false promises offered by the schooling system and I interpreted 'My Stars' in a similar fashion. I just wish I enjoyed the music here more. The album uses a wide array of instruments, and I mostly enjoyed the cinematic closing instrumental 'Grande Finale', but there are some tacky-as-all-hell moments here. With that said, the saving grace of this album is just how much character it has.

Concept album with an outstanding 'School's out'.

This album was fine. I liked some of the songs but I don't think I'd ever listen again.

Alice Cooper continues to confound; I didn't expect this to quote West Side Story. This is every bit as silly and theatrical as yesterday's Sparks album, but it doesn't do it for me in the same way. Low three.

Didn't speak to me besides School's Out

School's Out is the fifth studio album from the band Alice Cooper. The band released seven album, with considerable success, before Vincent Furnier, had a solo career as Alice Cooper, assuming the persona of the band's chosen name. The band was known for it's outrageous stage act, with snakes, lots of fake blood, and simulated hangings. Cooper and the band wore intricate costumes and make-up, pulling any and all stops to be intentionally provocative. This album includes the band's most famous single, "School's Out." It is a good example of the guitar driven, classic rock that the band creates. The music is decent, well-performed hard rock, but not particularly noteworthy.

What strikes me most about this album is that it is so unlike what you think an Alice Cooper album would sound like - and that's a compliment. 1972 is such a strange time for music, what you think would be a horror-gore album is an easy listening alt-prog-rock disc. 3.5/5

appreciated the jazzy hits on this. not really what i expected, but no complaints here

This is surprisingly fun, not at all what I expected. I knew the title track, and expected the rest to follow with less good iterations of that, but there's prog, jazz, blues, a bit of everything really. It's not top tier, but it's certainly a high 3 for me.

Prefer to billion dollar babies, but still doesn’t do much for me

Skools out

The first shock rock super star's most famous album. The titular song is a class. The rest doesn't necessarily hold up well, but I did rather enjoy the "Grande Finale" instrumental.

Yeah a couple of hits, the variety is good here though id never listened to the album the whole way through. Thanks guitar hero. 2.9

I hate his voice but the record is ok...

The title song is great, and outside of that, there are some interesting moments but overall the album is just ok. It's not bad, but I would much prefer to hear the title song over any of the other tracks on the album.

Wasn't bad, I just couldn't vibe with it 3 ⭐️

Would not expect a horn filled jazz rock jam like "Blue Turk" to be the centerpiece of this album based on only knowing the famous title track. There's a lot going on in here!

Grunge, haunting, somber punk rock. There are some really good jams on this record that make me want to thrash. I dig this one.

Annað en ég hélt. Á köflum mjög áhugavert. 3,5.

Great end to the work week with this timeless classic. Had not heard the end tracks in quite some time and enjoyed it.

Americans never did Glam Rock terribly well. Or Punk. (Poodle Metal, though? 👌🏿) I digress. I can’t imagine what t would have been like to listen to this album in 1973. But, judging from the stuff from the era that I know, I guess it would have been a bit like listening to Marilyn Manson in 1999 (Note. Alice Cooper aka Vince Furnier, turned out much better on every front.)

That ending was impressive. Don't forget the Coop everyone! Three overworked teachers out of five

3.5. Some fun sound in here

classic

Schools out is a classic and reminds me of my childhood a lot. An exciting pumped up song. The rest passed me by!

Pretty good, I like Alice Cooper but a lot sounds the same. I much prefer his album Trash, that's the one I think of when it comes to Alice Cooper

Pretty good

The title track is an all-timer. The rest of the album doesn’t live up to it, but a decent listen overall. 3.5/5

This album surprised me. Catchy songs covering a more than expected number of genres.

it starts one way and ends another, it was very diverse which surprised me, but wouldnt come back to it.

Surprisingly varied and enjoyable.

This was a little disappointing. I was excited for an Alice Cooper offering, I've always enjoyed his hit singles and I like him as a person / radio presenter, but I thought this album fell flat. The title track is a certain classic, I'll give it that. As for the rest? It's not awful but it falls smack-bang in the middle: 2.5. I'll round it up to a 3.

Solid 3.5. I honestly was kind of meh about Alice Cooper based on the few songs I'd heard on the radio. This actually impressed me quite a bit. Still not a super fan, but I'm glad it was in the rotation.

Love Alice cooper this album was a nice easy listen with some songs ahead of its time and pretty tight from start to finish

Solid album. I've never really dug into Alice Cooper and mostly assumed they wouldn't be for me. This album is a pretty solid mix of good songs and shitty hard rock 70s songs. The title track is iconic and only really in a good way due to Dazed & Confused. I enjoyed the more restrained songs where Cooper's vocals are quite nice and the guitars/arrangement are somewhat interesting. It's a bit of a concept album that gives it a little more pizazz. I overall enjoyed. ***

Not at all what I was expecting, “School’s Out” was a fun tune but I didn’t care for much of anything else.

This was better than I expected. I used to live billion dollar babies but the rest of his stuff I wasn’t crazy about. His band is always good but his schtick is mostly not for me.

Once you take this as musical theatre then it's wild style and genre swings are much easier to understand. Four stars for the bangers, three for the rest. On the whole a three.

Prima maar niet heel bijzonder

The title track is a classic The rest less so

Not the biggest fan of his singing style or silly lyrics but this at least held my interest & had some very cool bass playing. 2.75. Unfortunately I mis-rated the next album with the above. So "ABC - The Lexicon of Love" gets Alice Cooper's 3 stars & identical comments. Let the record show that I would never intentionally grant an ABC record 3 stars. It is now a shameful blemish on my algorithm.

Not my favorite and will not listen again.

It's fine. The title track is a classic and the rest of the album does have some surprises if you're expecting a lot of the same but overall it didn't "wow" me really. Not a bad listen though.

3.5 solid aside from Schools out and Blue Turk the rest of the album is kinda just ok

I knew Alice Cooper was from the 70s but 1972 is earlier than I expected given his style. Gutter Cat vs. the Jets is an odd one. Like West Side Story with random Sci-Fi mixed in.

Dang, I really wish the scale of the theme matched the variety of sound. Really liked how everything sounded. I'm all for theatrics but the school theme just felt so surfacy and dinky.

first note. i mistakenly gave yesterday's album a 4 instead of a 3 i wish you could edit those so bad.

Some bright spots but mostly mediocre.

I know 1,000 is a big number, but did we really need TWO Alice Cooper albums?

She's a lot more harmonious than you think

Kinda fun I guess

This is what happens when a theatre kid spends their summer vacation writing a dorky rock opera about summer vacation. It's not bad, but it does make me roll my eyes a lot. At least it kicks off with one of the best hard rock songs ever, and that makes it a bit more tolerable.

First song is a classic. Doesn't stick the landing the same way for the rest of the album

Surprised by this one. A bit campy in the vein of the Meatloaf record on the list. Riffs from West Side Story. Title track is still fun.

luney tune blue turk my stars grande finale

Quite enjoyed the jazzier blusier tracks. Solid 3.5 stars.

This was weird but interesting

Of course I knew the first song. Test of the album felt quite different, I liked it!

The title track is a classic. The bass player does a lot of heavy lifting on this album. The pseudo showtunes are a little weird, did not expect to hear West Side Story tracks here. I never got the hype on Alice Cooper but the album is fine.

I think I get this one. Some tracks are experimental, as if each band member got to take an idea and run with it. What resluts from that approach is an album with a little something for everyone. You may not like all of the tracks, but there might be one that hits the nail on the head and is exactly what you're looking for. It's also very clear how old this album is. It sounds like early rock and roll. I find it much more endearing than million dollar babies.

A superb hit single to lead off followed by an album of its time. Never really gets back into full gear but a decent listen.

strong 3. Cant make 4 but is quite good

Fun album, a few songs I had forgotten. Still not as good as Love It To Death, but pretty decent.

I had never listened to the whole album before, but I do like the title track. Overall, a decent album.

first listen definitely a confusing album, kinda all over?

Not for me

It’s actually better than I expected. The title song is a little cheesy to me, so I expected the entirety of the album to follow suit. Alices’s stage show is super over the top. The album, on the other hand, is not. I rather enjoyed several songs. I’ve liked Alice Cooper since his role in Wayne’s World but I’ve also always heard that’s he’s actually down to earth and a really kind person. It makes me like the album even more.

While I hadn't played this album before, I was familiar with the title track. After listening to the album several times, I reckon that School's Out (the track) is fantastic, but that the rest of the album doesn't quite match it.

All due respect to Alice Cooper, this album was incredible for its time

Good for what it is

Always enjoy a bit of Alice Cooper. Really wide range of styles and influences that you don't get to fully appreciate when only listening to the singles. (3.3)

Proto Manson is not as scary. This was a surprise in the server that it wasn't all dude rock.

School's Out is a great song, but the rest is just meh.

Some good and some bad. Blue Tuck and Luney Tune are top 2 songs.

Schools out is good.

Yllätyin todella positiivisesti! Schools out kyl kuraa, mut muuten ihan jees

actually pretty interesting, a cool blend of rock and sometimes jazzy, psychedelic. not bad

School's Out is an iconic track. I don't know a single person who didn't blast that song the day school let out. The rest of this album is solid too, although generally speaking 70s/80s hard rock isn't really my thing.

The musical theatre flair should thrill me more than it does. (I mean he samples West Side Story for goodness sake!!) But outside the title track I don’t find much to be enthusiastic about. Mostly it’s a fine rock record if not a little bland. 3/5

3.653 One of the greatest album sleeves ever. Drank beer at my neighbor's when I was 17 to this one. Diverse sounding album for 1972. Mom played it while I rocked in my cradle.

It wasn't anything special to me.

Pleasantly surprised. Really want sure what was in here besides the title track. Found a few deep tracks I enjoyed. Overall a good background listen.

Schooooooooooools. Out. For. Summer.

petty gewd!!!

bin angenehm überrascht

Strong and absolutely classic opening track but didn’t really vibe with the rest of it.

Don't really get it

Some of these songs, like “My Stars” really impressed me and caught me by surprise. Overall though this album doesn’t have a ton of replay value for me personally.

Rough and unadorned music

The title track reminds me so much of my dad so there is definitely some nostalgia there. The lyrics are so incredibly cheesy though haha. I actually don't think I've ever listened to anything else on this album. Was not expecting Westside Story on this album!!!! Blue Turk actually isn't too bad. I like the more jazzy feel to it and the saxophone. My Stars was actually pretty good too. Okay the first part of the album was what I was expecting but I really did not expect this album to go where it went. I was mostly expecting the glam rock stuff like School's Out. But I didn't expect it to get jazzy/bluesy. I also didn't expect the broadway Westside Story bit.

Super fun and again, not what I expected! I like how theatrical it is. Especially, the full blown West Side Story revival right in the middle of it. I also love how it closes out with the Grand Finale, tying it all together. For a pretty surface level album, it somehow feels deep like The Wall by Pink Floyd. However, instead of being deep, it's just kind of about nothing. Which is maybe the brilliance of it. I had a great time listening to this record.

Cool album! Very eclectic.

Competent and even here and there interesting, yes, but also silly and sloppy and a touch boring, which one is pretty sure not what this band was going for. The finger snaps on "Gutter Cat vs. The Jets" are a brief highlight, as is the piano vamping on "My Stars" and the horns-synth combo play in "Grand Finale." "Blue Turk" might be the best cut overall, but much else is just overdramatic attention-seeking of no more than mediocre merit. The parts are more than the sum, basically, and as a whole this one's not worth one's (or anyone's) time.

Not my favorite from him. I vastly preferred his 80's album, Trash, that he did with Desmond Child. Super 80s hair/pop rock, but I was into that at the time.

Interestingly poppy

While the first half of this album definitely brings memories of a better time that I was never alive for (or maybe I've just seen Dazed and Confused too many times), it sort of runs out of steam by the end to the point where the Grande Finale feels unearned. It's a classic classic rock record, and I really love Alice, but I wanted more juice here.

Krass. Das Album ist so anders wie die Single und generell die bekannten Songs. Starke 3

Alice Cooper ist echt nicht mein Ding. Theoretisch nicht schlecht (ist halt n Klassiker), aber die Vocals und der Kitsch. Meh. Best: Blue Turk (fast schon jazzig) Worst: Gutter Cats vs. The Jets MEEEOW

The beginning of the architect of Shock Rock. Good, but the best is yet to come.

J'avais l'impression d'écouter un show musical, mais plus rock. enjoyable 6.5/10

One should really be in the moode for Alice Cooper. But if you're ever in that mood, he does not disapoint.

Shock rock! Actually a fan of the genre.

You get a couple of classic tracks that the world can sing the words to, but it’s impossible for me to listen to the entire album. Very disjointed.

Okay turns out I had no clue what kind of music Alice Cooper made. Luney Tune and Grande Finale go hard, and I hate to be a basic bitch but School's Out bangs. The childish "badass" lyrics did elicit a couple giggles from me but I don't think they're a detriment to the album bc they were probably written that way on purpose. Light 3 stars bc most of the album was just fine.

Started out w a pretty classic jukebox hit. Then i was surprised to see this album go in so many different directions. And it kind of worked.

Very disappointed School's out is a great anthem but I'm afraid the rest of the album is dull and uninspiring. There's nothing really bad, just nothing good A real shame

Enjoyed it on the whole.

He looks so much like Steve Carrell its crazy. Cooper never really gets there for me but it's definitely not bad.

Not sure what to make of this exactly. Seems like he had an idea for one song and decided to try to make an album of it. Kind of all over the place but nothing terrible. Light 3.

Fine classic rock but nothing special in my opinion

Pretty good and theatrical classic rock. Not quite as corny as Meatloaf but for some reason that makes it worse to me. Like if you are gonna go there then GO THERE. First track is of course absolutely killer. Would do a 3.5 if possible.

Classic album.

Solid album, quite random lyrics and your typical album. The trombone, keys and guitar work extremely well in Blue Turk, and the Instrumental track to end is quite grandiose.

One of those albums I have never got around to listening to, so only knew the title track. Very different to what I expected - more Zappa less AC/DC. Didn't mind it.

Enjoyable rock album mixed in with some jazzy vibes

Love the piano on My Stars. The last 2 songs are a bit odd. Pretty fun album

Ein Klassiker

Couple of good tracks but overall not for me

Decent

The second Alice Cooper albums I've gotten. I'm still so surprised how different they sound than I expected. His look looks so much edgier. The music is very tame, kinda poppy rock. More glam than metal. Favorite track: My Stars.

Blue turk was great gave this album a 3.

Decent enough

More interesting than I expected

This is better than I remember it being the first time I ever heard it, with the mix of this showtune-ness of it all with American glam felt like it was no one but Alice Cooper's. That doesn't mean every song here is memorable, though, which isn't great when an album is already pretty short. However, you'll never not hear me sing the praises of Alma Mater, which is one of the band's best tracks, and brings this album up from okay to good, which is quite the feat for one track. This album is nothing spectacular, in fact I'd say there are multiple Alice Cooper albums that are better before and after this, but this is still a solid release from a group/performer that I feel can go much lower quality-wise.

Expected more songs about monsters. Got a pretty decent classic rock album. Not bad!

This was fun. More diverse than expected, only knowing the album that followed this one. Holds up well.

I have to admire the diversity on this album. Its goes jazzy and proggy ar times. That said, it doesn't do much for me.

OK- loved the vibe and brass band in the grand finale :)

Fun listen, good old rock. Alice cooper just seems like a fun dude

I like this one but "Killer" is better!

This album was definitely not what I thought it was going be. I had only heard schools out before now, and I think very few of the songs had that sound. Particularly Blue Turk caught me by surprise. Otherwise , I really enjoyed it.

I feel like Alice Cooper was most definitely a theater kid.

The song "Blue Turk" is absolutely stunning: organs, trumpets, clear and in-tune singing. Very well produced. Gives me a "Doors" feeling. For the rest, many shouty, badly produced, early punk.

I never paid attention before, but Alice Cooper had a hell of support on the bass. Poor mixing on Schools Out doesn't let them shine, but Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets sees him leading the pack with something reminiscent of Les Claypool (can safely say I was not expecting the Westside Story interpolation). More bass goodness on Blue Turk although this sounds like a blatant The Doors ripoff. My Stars is a cool one with prog influences at work, lead largely by virtuouso guitar work and a piano melody. Found myself jamming along quickly. Alma Mater bites The Beatles real hard. I mean outside of the outro it sounds identical to some of their songs in structure and tone. Not a bad thing, just stands out. Album ends on an instrumental track. Kinda of meh on the grand scheme. This album was way better and more varied than I anticipated coming in. If I could give it a 3.5 I would, but will round down here because I don't think it packed enough punch to push to 4.

What the fuck did I listen to on that Gutter Cat and Street fight song. Love School's Out. Makes me think of the movie Dazed and Confused. The rest of the album was decent, Alice Cooper is certainly a weird guy

It's okay, a little campy for my tastes

Good instrumentals, bad vocals, including the style and the dumb lyrics.

Net als de vorige keer: wel aardige jaren 70-shockrock, maar niks met eeuwigheidswaarde. En deze keer niet eens James Bond-muziek.

School’s Out is not what I expected. It’s much more eclectic than the straight rock I assume Cooper played. This isn’t the sound I imagined from the guy with eye liner on. It almost feels like a musical at times. Blue Turk is fantastic and full blown Jazz Rock. Public Animal #9 is more of what I expected. Overall it’s theatrical, energetic, diverse. 7.8/10

Legal o som, mas não fica à altura do hit

A pretty interesting array of musical styles. Gutter cats vs the jets caught me off guard. 3

I think that my previous listening to the title track threw me off for the rest of the album. It’s almost like it didn’t not fit musically with the other 8 songs. Those other 8 however, fit nicely with each other and formed a solid album.

This was very theatrical. I was only familiar with Track 1 but found myself enjoying the rest. I feel like Alice Cooper may have been that weird drummer in marching band who also did theater and was always the center of attention, but in a band nerd/theater nerd kind of way. For the record those are my people so no offense meant.

Having only listened to one Cooper album before (his latest at this time, released in 2023), I wasn't sure what to expect. Nothing particular jumps out at me as really good or bad, so I guess it gets a solid “I enjoyed it” 3, but will likely not get a re-listen. There's no doubt these are skilled musicians, and it seems like they're having a blast playing. This album seems to capture the “classic rock” sound perfectly for a child of the millennial era. As a side note, I made the mistake of listening to the Expanded and Remastered release, a two hour loop of these tracks from different concerts or studio sessions, and now I never want to hear the song, “School's Out,” again. The live renditions of some tracks are pretty good though.

Certainly much more varied than I was expecting; I was only familiar with a few Alice Cooper songs, but there's some range on this album. Largely decent even if it wasn't the hair metal I was expecting. Also my dog was SUPER interested in some of the weird sound effects he produced, so...props for that?

doing the 'camp' that we didn't like from Bat Out Of Hell and Tommy but in a rockin' way that connects all the dots.

Alice Cooper rules. But the album as a whole was just okay.
