Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Felt like The Velvet Underground got older and more stoned for most of the record, until they got a wave of energy and made a couple of singles. Great album to make and eat dinner to.

Better than I thought it would be.

"Never thought you'd be a junkie because heroin is so passe." Probably my favorite line ever.

cool and vibey re a certain era

A low three. There was one song we liked but otherwise this was unremarkable.

bland and didn’t worth listening to

i was hoping theyd push the envelope a little more but its not bad

This is OK. I remember the Junkie one, but I can't imagine I'd recognise any of the others if I heard it again.

Solid little 90’s album. 3.5⭐️

A go-to christmas album for sure. Don’t know that I’ve ever sat through a whole christmas song intentionally before, but it was kinda fun. Fave songs: White Christmas.

All of the elements are there and yet comes off unremarkable and frankly mid. The instrumentals on the back end of the album shine but not enough to save it. 3/5

Space rock Boys better Every day should be a holiday

Music was okay

1997, to me at least was one of the best years of music. Mostly due to the sleeper tracks coming out at the time. But in the 90's there was this compulsion to fill a cd to 70ish minutes as well. Ive never ventured past Not if you were the last junkie or every day should be a holiday but I was surprised. Its a mix of Brit-Pop and something else...

This album clearly belongs in the 90s with its thick-sounding guitars and lush production, but its clear The Dandy Warhols aren't necessarily going for hit singles with '...The Dandy Warhols Come Down'; rather, they're going for an hour-long collection of soundscapes that take their cues from alternative rock, psychedelic rock, space rock and shoegaze. With the voice of Courtney Taylor-Taylor operating as either a delicate whisper or a hearty chant (depending on the song), the record conveys plenty of different emotions, however many of the songs tend to let the noise take the lead, which doesn't always work. Some songs work quite well, like the obvious singles 'Not If You Were the Last Junkie On Earth', 'Every Day Should Be a Holiday' and 'Boys Better', but outside the singles, the album can be a bit of a drag at times, as the lyrics can get a bit overly repetitive and many of the instrumental passages descend into aimless noise. If the album was a bit more like the singles, it'd probably score higher from me, but there's just a bit too much filler here. I call it a symptom of the CD era where so many artists were tempted to hit the 60-80 minute mark, ti varying effects. Best songs: Not If You Were the Last Junkie On Earth, Every Day Should Be a Holiday and Boys Better

Decent rock record

Standard 90s alt rock album with a bit of a spacy twist. Like a lot of albums of the CD era it's about 15 minutes too long. I dunno. I liked a couple tracks.

I see this growing on me.

Really good start but the tail of the album really didn't need to be there?

There is a really distinct energy here that grabs you immediately. It feels loud and layered in all the right ways. Then it feels like it starts wandering without a map for a while. There are still some great moments scattered in the back half, though. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Minnesoter - Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth - The Creep Out

Was this the best Dandy Warhols album they could recommend? Fave track: Good morning

This album was all over the place for me. The intro was priming me for a 1. Most of the songs sounds like they would be used in a trailer for a quirky action family movie. The slow melodic songs in the middle (Whipping Tree/Green) I enjoyed a lot, but they are not the main feature of the album. With all that being said, I did enjoy the album and it was cool discovering a band that I have never heard of.

As the album progressed, it just compelled me les. Still not bad though.

The Dandy Warhols are a band I've always had the intention of listening to, but have never made it around to them, so I'm thankful for this list in that way! I found "Boys Better" to be very groovy, and was sucked into the song so much I thought it was a lot longer than it was. Some songs kind of fell into this same thing, for better or worse. The album could've been about 15 minutes shorter, I think. I did enjoy the variety of the tracks (regarding tempo, mood, etc.), though, as it kept me more engaged than other albums on the list have.

Usually these shoegaze groups are a flash in the pan but they had some sustained success leaning more into that punk rock revival early 2000s scene with the Vines/Hives ect. This album was enjoyable. Nothing incredibly memorable though. Seems like the list should have included their 2000 release instead? The late 90s early 00s albums right before this list was originally released don’t have that same staying power, which makes sense since they didn’t get to marinade as long.

I still haven’t decided if this fucking rocks, or if it’s a Walmart “I’m Fluent In Sarcasm” graphic tee in music form. Maybe it’s both?

Wasn’t it the right mood, even though I am in Minnesoter. Should try it in the car perhaps.

This was interesting! I had only heard of the one song but everything else sounded strangely timeless, if I couldn't hear the vocals, I would struggle to place this in the 90s. What on Earth were those last two tracks?

It was ok….nothing exciting. It didn’t hurt my ears.

Liked last two songs with no lyrics the best. Ok shoe gazer music which was never my favourite. But overall was ok. 3.5 stars

Favourites: Be-In Minnesoter Orange ★ Good Morning ★

alright, not the most interesting

The album has some great songs then some not so great songs. With a little ruthless editing this could be a killer album. 3/5

Immediately know this won't be the only Warhols on here. Man lazy.

Good overall sound, but nothing stood out to me as particularly memorable. May listen again.

this was fun!

I only really knew Welcome to the Monkey House (and boy did I listen to a lot of that record for a while)... nothing here really grabbed me the same, but shout out to a song called "Cool as Kim Deal".

Decent.

At the beginning of the album, I thought for sure I was going to rate this at least four stars...and then it stagnated with the same beats, rhythms, and it eventually seemed like I was listening to the same song over, and over(for over an hour). Favorite Track: "Be-In".

I don’t know why but it’s like this is almost really good but falls a bit short. I feel like they had lots of ambition here but couldn’t quite pull it off. It’s nice enough but also too long. Cutting out some of the filler would have improved this no end. Absolutely no need for an hour plus

Not their best

Like this more than expected. Chill 90s rock

Mehhhh... No songs really stood out here. I recall liking the dandy warhols when I was younger but this album just felt... Fine.

It’s okay, I’m neither annoyed nor excited by this one. Some songs are decent other are kind of meh. I suppose 2.5 rounded to 3 seems about right.

I liked it - little longer than necessary on some songs, but it was fun to listen to. I'll be more favorable to the rest of the catalog after hearing this one.

I was worried this album was going to sound like a certain song of theirs, and was pleasantly surprised that only about one and half songs met my expectation. The rest was kinda... shoegaze / dream pop? And while those genres are not things I'm hugely into either, I quite enjoyed (most of) this album. 3.5

I am not sure I’d put any Dandy Warhols albums in this list, but if I did it’d be Thirteen Tales. I like them well enough, but I’m more drawn to individual songs rather than the full albums, which tend to run longer than they need to.

Sounds good but lacking any bite or energy to make anything really stick. Few decent tunes in there but broadly too meandering

Gillar, men glömde liksom bort vad det ens vad jag lyssnade på direkt

Gillat detta gäng sedan introt till Veronica Mars, men detta album var lite blandat.

Liked it.

I remember when this band came out it was alleged they were the next Sonic Youth in much of the indie music press. Well, they're certainly not. The Dandy Warhols Come Down is not terrible, but the band does come off as a bunch of pretentious art school pricks for sure. 3/5 #206

Kind of cool - never heard of these guys but I'd like to hear more.

Propper Garage Rock with Pop influence.

Easy to listen to if uninspiring.

Favorite tracks: Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth, Hard On For Jesus. Another album that makes me wish this site did half stars! A solid 3.5 for me - the kind of mellow alt music I tend to like, vibey and a little sleazy. Overall the album is maybe a bit longer than I'd prefer, but there's plenty here that makes me bop along.

Good album with a really cool vibe. What drags it down are the two unnecessary instrumentals at the end, and the consequential too long running time. This kind of music warrants a 40-50 min album.

The album has moments of fuzzy charm and slick grooves, but it often feels bloated and repetitive, like it’s trying a bit too hard to sound effortlessly cool. Favourite Songs: Boys Better, Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Good Morning. Least Favourite Songs: Pete International Airport, The Creep Out.

Be-In - A slow start, but it was solid, with a killer synth part in the middle. 7.5/10 Boys Better- It's a cool guitar riff, but the drone noise at the start was so blatantly obnoxious that I am knocking it to a 6/10 Minnesoter- it was a quirky little song that was fun to listen to. 8/10 Orange- it is way calmer in comparison to the previous three tracks, but it maintains a certain edge throughout that is both entrancing and a bit off-putting. 8.5/10 I Love You - asmr for lonely people, it's kind of corny in a bad way 5/10 Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth- I guess it was intresting but herorin is pasae so it doesnt matter 7.7/10 Every Day Should Be A Holiday - absolute banger for real 8/10 Good Morning - its a decent track so thats kind of drags the sentiment forward 7.8/10 Whipping Tree Green - a calm little track that i enjoyed a lot 8/10 Cool As Kim Deal - honestly a forgetable track and all that but its cool 7/10 Hard On For Jesus - funny name brings it up by a point other than that its kind of okay 7.4/10 Pete International Airport - really really boring but thats fin it is the definition of mid though 6/10 The Creep Out - 8 great end instrumental track

I like the music, but the lyrics aren’t for me.

3.3 2x good sound but nothing too memorable

Pretty cool. Definitely hit some lulls, but overall I enjoyed it more than the average album.

At first glance, this may seem like yet another obscure 90s British alt-rock album meant to pad out this list with NME's favorite albums of the decade. However, that's not actually the case. These guys are actually from Portland, Oregon! Hell yeah! I love Portland. This album's alright. It drags out a bit and it's not the most interesting listen, but it's a respectable affair. The musical style isn't completely unoriginal. I can definitely hear the britpop comparisons that others have made, with a bit of a shoegaze thing going on as well. That's neat. The singing is alright. The writing isn't anything to write home about, but it's not bad either. The songs are solid. You've got some good singles in there like "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth." This album's not perfect and it's basically the definition of "Good, but not great," but I can see the value here and I definitely liked the album. Solid 3/5.

It's pretty good, not amazing but good. I'm curious why they choose the first album and not the one with at least one hit song. the first is not always the best or most important for a band. If I was at a festival and there wasn't a band i had to se I would stay and listen to these guys

album koji je načelno dobar. ima super momenata (npr. pjesma not if you were the last junkie on earth) al ima i dosadnih i slabih; pogotovo smetaju zadnje dvije pjesme, bezvezne, bezdušne i potpuno suvišne – instrumentalne stvari koje zajedno traju 15 minuta.

Very much a mixed bag of an album. I like the upbeat songs here, and on the whole there is a lot to like. But there's a decent amount here that doesn't work for me. Not a fan of Sonic Youth, and the influence of that band on some tracks is obvious in a bad way.

honestly surprised at how good it was

This is 451st album and probably my 351’s Brit Pop from the late 90s-early 00s.

Nah not really for me - I wouldn't say it's bad but it did lack a bit of character

The Dandy Warhols are an American band, a fact that could be missed if you'd only heard this mix of Spiritualized and Oasis. It's a good mix; the guitar tones are interesting and there's a good balance of spacier moments and straight up rock. "Every Day is a Holiday" is a standout. The songwriting is a mixed bag though. There are too many songs like "Orange" that are slow and spacey without being interesting, and ending on 10+ minutes of instrumental noise is kind of a letdown. It's enjoyable but it doesn't use its influences in an interesting enough way to be memorable.

Perhaps I need to spend more time with this one to appreciate it more. On first listen it was more a matter of enjoyable moments for me as opposed to songs. I did really find myself into the closer which was a long psych tune. It was good but kinda just washed over me. 3 stars

Por alguna razón siempre que tengo ganas de escuchar algo así voy a The Brian Jonestown Massacre (especialmente su gran Take It from the Man). Las que me gustan más: Boys Better, I Love You, Every Day Should be a Holiday (¿Mejor canción del disco?), Cool as Kim Deal. Creo que las que me gustan más son las más concisas y rockeras. En fin, buen disco. A seguir escuchando.

It was ok, not sure why the last two songs had to be so long but whatever.

Not a bad listen. Once.. and that's about it, nothing really stood out for me. I see why they're called Warhols, they're obviously trying to be a Velvet Underground clone but without Lou Reed. 2.5 / 5

I enjoyed the synth mixed with rock, though many of the songs sounded alike. They definitely have an identifiable sound.

Eh not really my sort of jam, a lot of it just blends together and sounds like nonsense, exacerbated by going for over an hour. Boys better, minnesoter and cool as Kim deal are my top 3

Not much musical talent or skill on display here; I always pay attention to guitar playing, and most of the guitar work here is just strumming power chords (with the obvious distorted fuzz effects added in). But they've got a pretty fun, relaxed, slightly psychedelic sound. I noticed the album came out in the 90s; it may be ahead of its time, then, since I know a lot of music like this got big in the 2000s. Enjoyable, but didn't strike me as too remarkable

Liked it, but mmm idk. There’s something i didnt like

Might grow a bit more on me after another listen, could potentially even go up to 4.

Based on the first track, I thought I would hate this. But, I ended up liking it.

Album 891 of 1089 The Dandy Warhols -...The Dandy Warhols Come Down (1997) Rating : 3 / 5 Another one that I enjoyed listening to, but I’m not going to take much away from it. If it’s on, that’s fine, but I doubt I’ll think much about it again. It has that laid-back, slightly psychedelic alt-rock feel the band is known for, with plenty of fuzzed-out guitars and dreamy vocals. It moves along with an easy vibe, and there’s nothing offensive about it - just not much that jumped out at me either. A pleasant enough listen, but not one that leaves a lasting mark.

This album starts off very solid with a few psychedelic garage rock tunes that sound almost timeless. Unfortunately, the rest of the album struggles to keep up, turning into a mostly 90s Brit-pop adjacent record. Each song is catchy enough on its own, but a bit too samesy to make a well-rounded album.

This album felt like it ran a little flat and a touch too long for me liking, but there were definitely some solid sounds tucked within. Found this one to be front loaded for sure. Really enjoyed the fusion of grunge and psych on Boys Better and the minor vibes of Orange (sort of reminds me a bit of Dismemberment Plan or something). The fuzzed out I Love You is nice as well. And as far as individual songs go I think Not If You Were the Last Junkie On Earth is the best standalone and immediately memorable. The back half is mostly forgettable for me, though Hard On For Jesus is a great song name and also a fun upbeat jam to mix up some of the malaise. At its highs, I loved this one, and I might come back for a few tracks. But across the board, just a fine album. Solid-high 3.

Definitely has some cool psych elements to it, but there was also a lot of emptiness in this album that was pretty forgettable.

Creí que no conocía ninguna canción de este disco, pero está "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" que sí la conozco. Viendo sus canciones más escuchadas en general, no es mala banda y tuvieron dos o tres mega éxitos. He añadido también "Every day should be a holiday". Serían 2,5 estrellas, pero redondeo a 3.

Bedre enn forventa

Middle of the road, nothing special to be honest.

fun and brit poppy i'll say

Not too bad. I like the album as a whole as much as I liked that one hit song of theirs. Might give them more of a listen.

This was not too bad.

It was very interesting and weird.

This was interesting. I feel like I heard several songs from other artists within the album. "Horse with No Name" and some Pink Floyd and The Cure seemed really prevalent which I thought was really odd. Overall, not too bad.

Once again one of those bands I know the name of but have never listened to. I'm really surprised they're American because something about their sound is so late 90s post-britpop British. And I guess that's why even though not too many songs on the album were memorable I still enjoyed it quite a bit 3/5

Fine, but a bit forgettable. I don’t know that this really deserves a place on this list. Interestingly the best songs, Good Morning and Whipping Boy, were not the hits from this album

90s teen angst vibes

Pretty good album.Lots of jam bandy type songs

Easy going late 90s indie rock from the US.

Good stuff 3.5

Better than I thought it would be, I'd be interested to listen to more of these

Producer: Alright yall, I think we did. We have a 5 star, 40 minute seminal album, let’s start ironing out the finishing touc- Dandy: nah nah nah nah nah. We got at least another 30 minutes, let’s get that five star down to a 3. I could see this being an easy 4 if I’m in the mood for it. Shoegaze is very divisive for me apparently.

I really enjoyed the sound of this album, very cool and fresh. The distortion on Hard On for Jesus is top notch, the album plays with a lot of cool sounds. But here's another example of a band wearing me out with too many tracks. If they cut this down to a tight 8, maybe even 9 or 10 tracks, it would be a no brainer 4 or 4.5. But by the end I was just ready for something different, so 3.5 rounded down.

I'm surprised this was selected over Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, and I'm also surprised by the largely positive reviews when people seem to like shitting on many (better) albums from this era. It's a solid album for the most part. I like how they mix a shoegaze type sound with some very commercial tracks, but there's a lot of filler in here. Just skipping the last 2 tracks (which seem to go on forever) would improve it.

Rating: 7/10 A lot of catchy riffs and melodies but too long, could have easily been 4 stars if it was 20 minutes shorter.

Didn't like these guys much at the time. I think their name put me off. The film about them and the Brian Jonestown Massacre - Dig - was pretty funny, though didn't really cast them in a great light either. This record is actually alright. Some well produced pop songs, with a few leanings towards more shoegazey, krautrockesque, experimental territory.

Nu-psych with some gems, but also plenty of bland filler that drifts into forgettable background noise.

Was just 1 long long song

I had tickets to see them in April 1998. For some reason I didn’t go. Regretting it now.

Representative of mid/late 90s alternative pop/rock sound. Not a bad option to play in the background

90s vibes all the way. I think I enjoyed this more in retrospect than I would have at the time because of the memories attached. Some good songs but its definitely more about the feeling than the actual tunes.

Nice, surprised. Would give 3.5 stars if possible

I've heard of this band. I know i have listened to a track just not quite sure what it is. It's alright not really my style of music.

This was a little hit or miss for me. Like higher energy stuff and some of it felt like it could have been cut.

A fine experience listening to this album, but one that couldn’t really capture my attention much.

pretty averagea

cant really explain why but i was anticipating this pissing me tf off but it was actually pretty good! i love space rock so all the spacey stuff works on me

Boys Better, Minnesoter, and Orange.

Erinneret mi ä bitz a Nirvana, aber vill weniger hässig.

be-in gfalltmer schomal! chli postgrunge mässig, s erinneret mich chli ane ruhigeri version vo nirvana (mit synthis) SPACE ROCK nenns doch grad meteorit HE JA MEGA sochli grunge meets brit pop?? aso d gitarre erinneret mich v.a. chli an kurt ohh orange gfalltmer sehr! Another album in my wheelhouse that I’d never listened to before. Some really strong songs on here. I can see coming back to this one as a fun listen. ……. Welp. Now that I’ve listened to every single second of “Pete International Airport” and “The Creepout” I can say that this album is FAT. The individual songs have a lot of fat on them, and the album itself has about six songs that could’ve been mysteriously erased and no one would’ve missed them. Were they afraid they’d never make another album, so they decided to publish as much material as possible? Did they get some kind of bonus from the record company for filling up all the space on a CD? Was it something to do with royalties? Who knows. All I know is you’ve got about 6 strong songs here, 2 or 3 them are bangers- so the verdict has to be- even though we used to be friends a long time ago- THREE STARS

Perfectly captures The Dandy Warhols - seriously great 90s rock, with huge guitars and the britpop sense of strong melodies (see 'Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth'), and then they completely lose theirselves in the end. The last two tracks are awful.

Pretty boring. Maybe in 1997 it was something new, but if you’re going to call yourselves the Dandy Warhols you gotta come stronger than that.

6 / 10 Started off really good and took me by surprise, however I found it slowed down and failed to recapture me, still a good listen tho

1-2 songs were of interest and the rest bland. Not awful, just not my taste.

Not bad. Better than expected - similar to lots of albums on this list (like that Jesus and Mary Chain album from a few days ago) but somehow, in a way I can’t articulate well, a little better and more distinctive. Still not excellent, but nice enough. Favorites: Boys Better, I Love You, Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth

A wild one but not for revisits

The Dandy Warhols Go Up and Come Down. They hit heights and scrape lows. There are some great tunes here but sometimes there’s just not enough to grab you but conversely it goes on and on too long. I’d happily listen to selected highlights but ditch the rest.

Pretty good!

Very uncompelling, except for some great wordplay in a few of the tracks and titles.

The dandy warhols weren’t half as dandy as they seemed to think they were. Just ask Len Houmous! 2.8 7/14 Everyday Should Be A Holiday

A bit of strummy jangle, a bit of brit pop swagger, a bit of shoegazey swirling noisey atmosphere, a bit of psych modulated drone, a bit of warm shaggy fuzz, a bit of college rock goofiness, a bit of winking throwback garage rock nostalgia, a bit of power pop harmony, a very stupid band name. Hey, they're out there having fun being a pretty decent guitar band, not hurting anyone (except themselves it seems), but not a whole going on. They have great taste in music and in cool vintage guitars to go with their a classic PNW hipster aesthetic - but a good example of how taste doesn't necesarily transmute into inspiration. The mythos outstrips the music. Would anyone care about this band if it wasn't for Dig! and the drama around their friendship/feud with another band with a very stupid name? Favorites: Orange, Every Day Should Be A Holiday, Good Morning, The Creep Out

not bad

Me gustan las partes del album más dark y shoegazey, las partes más de pop noventero californiano se me hacen un poco menos interesantes.

Nice enough. Another one where the instrumental tracks (and instrumentals in general) are more fun than the lyrics.

Good. A little sleepy This is one of those albums I've been meaning to listen to for years. It's a pretty chill album and a little too sleepy at times for me. Not if you were the last junkie on earth was a big fave of mine when I was younger. It's a pretty good album but not something I old listen to over again very I often. times.

De hecho está bastante bueno y me sorprende que no lo haya escuchado en 1997 porque en esos años lo escuchaba todo, particularmente britpop y lo que sonara parecido.

I love space rock revival which makes this album more listenable to me but the indie sleaze of this record throwa me off. Courtneys vocals are really annoying but i love songs like "The Creep Out" they just feel so surreal and psychedelic. 6/10 Favourite: The Creep Out Least Favourite: Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth

Holy jeez what a mixed bag, one of the more weirdly frustrating album listens I can remember. I honestly love the way it starts. Mysterious and building into 2 excellent 90s rock songs. Then it fell the hell apart; next 2 songs are just terrible, followed by ....roll the dice on the rest of em. Holy hell I really hate all the low-vocals songs. Like a Pavement meets Lou Reed which ...kill me immediately. I can't tell if that's a different vocalist or they were on crack for those songs but I infinitely prefer the crack-less. I've got a few cuts saved and would listen to maybe 4 or 5 of these anytime but trash the rest. Maybe the first 3 star ranking I'm giving that feels perfectly-placed (i.e. credit is due for a few damn catchy songs. Just crazy how much I hate half of this. What is with the stupid weird droney last cut "The Creep Out" too. One note for almost 9 minutes??? One note!! Honestly impressive in its focused insanity. Almost.) Faves: "Be-in" "Boys Better" "Every Day ...Holiday" 5/10 3 stars

Plutôt banal

It's fine

I love 66 minute albums when there's only 10-15 minutes of actual good music.

A bit too repetitive and boring for me and that comes from someone who listens to 13 min long black metal songs

Definitivamente hay algo acá, debería escucharlo de vuelta, pero por ahora va Nota: 3.1

It started out slow, got much better, but the last song “The Creep Out” did not do things for me, at least positive things. This album wasn’t bad. I wouldn’t reach for it most likely, but I also appreciate how much it sounds like a product of its era.

Not my kind of music I might give it a try later again

I liked this album, but I think it's because it feels like a grunge album for people who don't like grunge.

Can’t say that there was much here to get me excited

It was alright. A few good tracks, a few bits that were too self indulgent. Nothing to bring me back, but nothing that I particularly hated.

Not what I was expecting I had preconceived ideas about the band but this album was not those. A right mixture of songs and instrumentals. Different and intriguing and will make me listen to more of their output.

first listen liked a lot of it but not all of it

There were some decent songs on here. But it was to long and a lot of it was to drone-y

I remember the 'buzz' around this group, then the collapse from the greater public eye. Not bad for '90s.

Ikke så verst. God variasjon. Spor 6 og utover er spesielt sterkt. Liker vrien med to instrumentalnumre på slutten. Kunne vært kuttet til nærmere LP-lengde.

Another album which was an ever-present when I was growing up. The last time I heard more than a song or two from this album was probably in the car 20 years ago - let's see how it stands up! --- Ok, I forgot to have a listen so here's the review based on historical understanding. The Dandys deliver a groovy slice of fried (baked) goodness, with fun riffs and goofy lyrics layered over lush sounds. It's good, but doesn't have a highpoint like 16 Minutes. Favourite tracks: Last Junkie, Minnesoter, Boys Better

fine and, well, dandy

Solid, I thought the first half of the album was stronger than the latter.

Was very disappointed at this album because I love their song “We Used to be Friends.” This album didn’t live up to that song.

Might have the best song about Minnesota? Like their later album more. A lot of this was filler but I did enjoy a couple songs on this.

Lots of variety on this record, ranging from hard rock to psych rock. I enjoyed the lower tempo and heavier stuff. I couldn't get behind the heavier psych rock, but it wasn't bad. Favourite Track(s): Orange Least Favourite Track(s): Green

Das Album markiert ihre psychedelischem Indie-Rock. Tracks wie "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" und "Boys Better" überzeugen mit eingängigen Hooks und punkiger Attitüde. Die Platte hat ordentliche Momente, verliert sich aber manchmal in ihrer eigenen Trance, wodurch einige Songs weniger einprägsam wirken.

Man that’s a POWERFUL album opener on “Be-In”. Great looping chorus, punchy bassline, memorable vocal harmonies. Had me very hopeful for the whole album! Sadly, I didn’t really find the rest of the project to match the Be-In energy. It wasn’t horrible, but oh how things could’ve been different. A few songs later, I’m having a hard time believing “Minnesoter” ISNT a playful impression of REM? Tell me that isn’t just my ears. Not sure I was a fan of the downward turn the energy took on the songs “Orange” & “I Love You”, where’s the “Be-In” type songs? “Good Morning” gave me the perspective that the lead singer is a bit of chameleon - changing all sorts of vocal deliveries and ranges to fit each song. “Hard On For Jesus” might be a bit of a return to form that I was hoping for in terms of punch and energy levels, but it was too little, too late imo. I’m also always a bit wary of songs that are THIS on the nose with criticisms of modern religion - I yearn for something with a tad bit of nuance/originality please! The album ends with a groovy, teasing closer in “The Creep Out”. I’m beating a dead horse by this point, but “Be-In” was almost impressionable enough to make the rest of the album worth the time. Nothing is performed poorly, but nothing else stands out either. Does its best to escape the y2k rock tropes with some success, not much else goin on. Won’t listen again but not bad either. Soft 3/5.

Opening hook caught my attention. Music was spot on

The Dandy Warhols have the thick, swirly neo-psyche sound dialed in perfectly and get that a sense of humor is what's missing in indie rock, but boy, do they need an editor. "Don't bore us, get to the chorus" posters should be put up all over their (I suspect) immaculate studio packed with pristine vintage gear.

This had some good grooves and in general I liked it, but both the album itself and the individual songs needed a 20% cut in length.

Late 90's indie/psychdelic pop/rock. A few tracks stand out with catchy melodies, witty lyrics or interesting production choices, whereas others just kind of meader along and never really make much of an impact. Too much of this falls into the indie landfill folder. Best Tracks: Boys Better; Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth; Every Day Should Be A Holiday

Better than I remember!

Mostly fine but sometimes it sounds like they don’t really know what they want to do. There’s the repetitive, psychedelic songs, the britpop-ish songs, the indie slacker songs and then there’s the more ‘’experimental’’ stuff and they doesn’t always work really well together

I enjoyed this, even the songs that overstayed their welcome a bit. It's a bit too buzz-y for me to get really into it, but I had a good time.

Okay. Good

Repetitive drones, killer guitar riffs, boring drives that morph into decent tunes, uplifting songs about heroin use, sometimes evoking Pink Floyd, but being less clever, ...I like it, but probably won’t listen again.

75% Best: Be-In; Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth; Every Day Should Be A Holiday; Hard On For Jesus Must-Hear? No

Can't make up my mind on this one Feels like it's trying too hard to be ironic or Street?

It's just ok

The musical equivalent of eating too much sugar and then feeling like shit after…but I think that’s what they’re going for? Kinda works…

I enjoyed that. Need to give it a few more listens to really grow on me. 3.5

I don't recall The Dandy Warhols when they were current, this period of time being flooded by post-grunge and rap with latin music on the rise. with this album the group sets a standard for the indie pop that will follow in the next decade. 3.5/5

Gonna give 3 stars. I was hip to their jive.

Just gonna go ahead and sit down with a vitamin water and watch the oc like it's 2005 and really lean into this album. I like it. I probably won't relisten.

Just ok

Acceptable, but the droning shoegaze ending really drags it down. Won't ever listen to it again.

I guess this album is somewhere between the grunge if the 90s and the start of indie sleaze. It's an interesting album, but not that exciting.not a huge fan of this.

Too much crap in between catchy songs

I saw these guys live at a concert in Bend, OR and it was great fun. This album is a more pop-y than the garage band rooted rock I saw that day but it's still quite good.

I liked this one. The psychedelic soundscapes with 90s production worked for me I really liked “Not If You Were The Last Junkie In Earth”, “Boys Better” and “Minnesoter”. But it does kinda lag in the middle. Overall a good time I’d say 3.5 if I could to halves

pretty decent, i enjoyed but probably wouldnt go out of my way for it.

Not terrible, but not a hidden gem either.

This could have been cool, but the execution wasn't quite there for me.

Some songs are worth a 4, but overall it’s a 3 for me.

nice sounding ground, bisschen Einfalls los manchmal

FINALLY MY 5 STAR STREAK IS BROKEN WAHOOOOO. no hate to this group I just wasn't in love with the music, and also several songs made me itchy

The album is awash with melody. Taylor-Taylor's voice and harmonising with himself, with synth, gives the Dandys an instantly recognisable pop rock feel. TT's ear for melody means these tracks are far from expendable pop - incorporating pop, grunge, Britpop influence. Add to that the monumental 'Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth' and this is pushing a four. But this is a very good, rather than excellent, album.

This one really took a left turn on the last two songs. Like did they just need to fill some space at the end? Anyways, this album was fine but nothing really jumped out at me. It was just an ok album.

Psychedelic, actually thought it was pretty good

When this started I was thinking this could be my first 5-star in a loooong time - but as it wound on the quality took a major downward trajectory. It never gets bad, but it does get uninspiring, and to end an already overlong album with 15 minutes of navel-gazing instrumentals that rival Deep Purple at their own-fart-sniffing best just drops it down pretty hard. Shame.

Look, we all had an album we were obsessed with in 1997, but in hindsight can’t imagine what we were thinking. That’s what led the Dandy Warhols to be the oldest album to have the honor of being removed from the 1001. For 17-year-old me, in 1997 I thought Offspring’s “Ixnay on the Hombre,” Everclear’s “So Much for the Afterglow,” and… wait for it… Creed’s “My Own Prison” were great. I’ve long since come to my senses. Not sure if “...The Dandy Warhols Come Down” is better than those three, but it doesn’t warrant a place on the list.

There isn’t one thing that really jumps out, or is distinctive, from this album. Rather it’s more of a vibe as the kids would say. I like the guitar sound and overall this feels more like a feeling. A feeling I enjoyed, but don’t need to revisit.

It was ok. Nothing really called out to me, but nothing really to dislike either. It would be fine to put on again, but I wouldn't put it on again on purpose.

It was a vibe album where it was on, it was cool, I enjoyed it, but that was pretty much it. Nothing to hate about it, nothing that really sticks out as "Wow, what an incredible song"

I guess "shoegaze" is the term you use for shooting yourself in the foot. I was enjoying the first half of this album. It had a heavy alternative sound but with a sense of humor maybe, then for fun they channeled Duran Duran (on "Every Day Should Be A Holiday"). But from "Good Morning" onward each song made me either sigh or press skip. The quality was there, but my interest wasn't.

I remember hearing about this band in the 90s, and I wish I had heard this album at the time. It doesn't sound like the 90s to me at all, and that is a good thing. It is a weird fusion between early 80s alt rock with a little bit of 60's alt psychedelic rock. At times it charms, but it also drifts a little into the experimental. By the end, I was ready to move on, however, it was a worthwhile venture into something from the 90s that didn't suffer too much from the grunge influences.

Pretty good.

Hmmmm. Really unsure if I love this or not.

Middle of the road (but not in a reckless way)

Pretty much what I expected. Sleazy or creepy? You be the judge.

Good but not great. The songs all do pretty much the same thing sound-wise, and while it's *fine* it does make it feel like a bit of a slog to make it to the end.

It was fine. Nothing stood out.

90s indie pop spectacular.

Thoughts before listening: Oooh does this have the song about being the last junkie on earth? That's a great song. I don't know all that much about the Dandy Warhols although I did watch that movie about their rivalry with Brian Jonestown Massacre. I'm sure this will be fine. Review: This is okay. It's a 90s alt-rock sound that I enjoy and is familiar to me, but I do feel like there are other bands that did it better. Interesting that the Dandy Warhols are from Oregon because they've always given me the vibe of a Brit pop band. The best song here is "Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" but I've added a few more to my playlist as well. 3-stars

Never has a sound and band name seemed so fitting to me

Far out ✌️

This was better than I expected. Good vibe and feel to it. Easy melodies to get lost in. I enjoyed listening to it. Good one to include on the list. I'm not sure I'd relisten. Fighting between a 3 and 4.

Had some interesting bits sonically. Lyrically it didn't do much for me. But had that flat over compressed sound to it of the 1990s.

This is a band that a vaguely remember hearing about but never actually heard them. They are somewhat typical 90’s alternative. They have Radiohead vibes sometimes, smashing pumpkins vibes, grunge vibes at times… nothing super memorable but they’re ok. I enjoyed it.

Hmm. Unsure about this rating. 2.5 maybe?

Fine pop music. I had a nice time.

Liked this better than I thought I would- have heard a few of their songs over the years. Really like their more upbeat songs (minnesoter, last junkie on earth, every day should be a holiday) but found myself skipping through the draggy songs. Definitely a west coast Sloan feel in the harmonies. Not bad at all.

No familiar with them, kinda weird could use another listen

cool but some (most if im being honest) feel really dragged out every day should be a holiday is a banger though i love those weird ass synths

Quite bland. Not bad, just totally... okay.

yayyy yummy fuzzy guitars

veit ekki alveg hvernig þessi þvældist með. indí með áhrifum frá sjöunda. allt í lagi ekki spes. síðri en bestu verk fjöldamorðsins.

First? 3/5 Again? 2/5

I didnt remember this fondly, but was pleasantly surprised. Apart from the ironically passe hit, there was a lot of filler but some decent pink floydesque music and some passable, really spacious soundscapes. Still too hipster and inconsistent, but not bad

Enjoyed it immensely. Some songs more than others by a lot though. Overall more good than bad. Some over-noodling got tiresome. Would have given a half star extra if I could.

Watch the great documentary on this band. Realise this isn’t the album that is best for this list. Grit your teeth in frustration. Give it 3 stars because you’re scared you’re being too mean.

Didn't expect to like this one as much as I did. Some really good songs on here.

This was fun. Not entirely interesting, but way too long. 3/5

Pretty interesting as an album, reviewing it is also tricky for me, had it in the backlog for almost 2 weeks now. A bit elusive, a bit hazy, with just enough mix of a 'I'm interested' and 'meh'. Ultimately? Interesting project. Interesting project. Interesting hooks. Somewhere between 3 and 4 for me, and it might've been a 4, but I don't feel like it has enough hooks for me.

Ended up playing at three times during the course of a lazy Saturday reading comic books

Nice discovery, I could get into hearing more of this

Best Song: Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth. Finally a song that seems to want to have a little fun. Worst Song: Pete International Airport. Boy was the latter half of this track unpleasant to listen to. Overall: Inoffensive but fairly dull, droning music. Everything has this drippy, medicated quality to it, but it also doesn't have the lyrical depth to truly lean into the melancholy. It feels like an album made to make teenagers feel a low-level, disembodied sort of angst.

*Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia* included in a list such as this one > Yes. Unfortunately, it's not in Dimery's book. *This* previous album included in the list? > NO. The second part of side one ("Orange", "I Love You" and even the overrated "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth", often singled out because of its importance in the *Dig!*-related Dandy Wharhol / BJM feud) are absolute borefests that go nowhere *slow*, both lyrically and musically. Too bad, because the rest is often livelier and/or pretty good, generally speaking. But you won't find anything there that *Thirteen Tales...* didn't do at least twice better during its best moments. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: around forty, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 455 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 271 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 330 (including this one)

This is a pretty good album by a band I was not aware of. They Kind of bridge the gap between Weezer and Radiohead which is very odd. Heroin is so Passe.

Brit pop meets American Grunge humor all covered with shoegaze the sum is less than its parts.

I had to take a short break after the intro song. But it did get better, however that didnt make it a "must-listen" for me, more of an average, middling album. It gives me a little pretentious vibes here and there and I cant see why it deserves that attitude.

As someone who watched the documentary DIG a bunch as a teenager it was interesting finally listening to an album by one of the two bands featured in that movie. This album is fine. Nothing mind blowing like I was expecting. I think Sloan did it better and without all the pretension. Overall I probably won’t listen again but I’ll have the lyric “I never thought you’d be a junkie cause heroin is so passe” stuck in my head for life. So thanks ya fucks

Pretty bored at the opener, eventually grew on me a little. Not enough to ever come back and listen again, and not sure I had to now. But not terrible. Except Peter International Airport, that was terrible.

It’s pretty good - there are som real bangers on here. But there are also a couple of fillers - some songs/melodies that get too repetitive. But I will definitely put this record on again in the future

At first I thought I liked it and the slight show gazy vibe but then I thought it was actually a bit dreary and lacked substance. Hard to tell. Inoffensive though

Generally quite good but got a bit bored and it all sounded quite similar. Can't really complain but nothing to celebrate for me

Weirdly satisfying for a ridiculously long album with ridiculously long songs.

Some fine tunes.

1997. Dream Pop. Alt Rock. Power Pop. 7/10 Orange. I Love You. Boys Better. Green. Whipping Tree. Good Morning.

90s feeling a lot. Decent album.

This is fine and dandy. Would listen again!

It sounds pretty good. I’ve heard, from credible sources, that the guy is a dick though

Much has been said about The Dandy Warhols (by me), but I honestly enjoyed this album more than I expected. Moody and psychedelic at times, upbeat and jammy at others, they displayed more range than I would have given them credit for. Whipping Tree was downright Floyd-esque! That said, it wasn’t particularly innovative. I’m feeling a 3.5/5 but going to round down because it was too long imo

Starts off really strongly, and stays enjoyable for the most part, but loses its way at the end. The two instrumentals that close out the album, ‘Pete International Airport’ and ‘The Creep Out’ are long, go nowhere and feel like they are the to pad out the run-time (of an album that was already long enough) more than anything else. Sometimes less is more.

That was pretty dandy

Just a click or two more to reach 4 starts,, quite a runner-up. I just wonder why this band hasn't ever fallen to my playlists earlier.

I liked this more than I expected I would and about halfway through it I really thought I’d end up giving it a 4. Unfortunately it went for another thirty minutes. You could drop the entire second half of this album and it would likely be a more cohesive, tight, punchy alt-pop rock type deal. Albums should not go over an hour and if they do they should be VERY good.

Was a bit skeptical when I saw we had been given Dandy Warhols, seeing as my only real exposure to them was the theme song to Veronica Mars. Really great opening track, harmonies working super well with the instrumental work here. Next few songs are forgettable/mid, special anti-shoutout to I Love You. Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth is a good song, the lyrics sort of remind me of a modern Pacific Northwest version of Dancin' Fool by Frank Zappa. The speed and vibe of the album slows down after this, and I enjoyed it a lot more than if they had continued with the same high-energy "90s era 60s nostalgia" bullshit. The energy picks up again, and the last couple songs on the album are instrumental tracks which are a lot more musically adventurous than you would expect given how this album starts. The real reason this was included in this book is its very obvious attempt to ape the Britpop sound. The band's later sound would develop into something more unique (evidenced by the fact that the two songs people actually remember them for came from their 3rd and 4th albums, but probably only because one of them was used as in a Vodafone and as mentioned earlier the other was the theme for Veronica Mars). The real question is, were the band's intentions noble? I can't blame them for appealing to the tastes of the people who will tell the public if their album is good or not. Actually, this inspired me to go and listen to their next album, Tales From Urban Bohemia, mainly because it has the badge of honour of a negative review from King Hack Robert Christgau. All up, an album that should really be 20-30 minutes shorter. A mix of different types of songs normally would normally mean variety but in this case it feels like a confused attempt to pad for time. Pete International Airport belongs on an ambient album, not on the same thing as a song like Boys Better. Overall, this is very much a mixed bag of an album. Not like trail mix, more like "I have a bag of peaches and some of them are starting to go off". Highlights: Be-In, Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Good Morning, Whipping Tree, The Creep Out

A self aware hip rock album with pop sensibilities and some dabblings in shoegaze. Though the layered guitars give a sophisticated feel, the album as a whole felt so monotonous. Has some really catchy rock tunes though, 'Boys Better' , 'Not if you were the last junkie....' and more. Two trippy techno/rock instrumentals as closers? I don't know. A light 3.

Quite liked this. A few filler tracks towards the end and it's long. Highlights are Not If you Were The Last Junkie On Earth, Every Day Should be a Holiday and Hard on for Jesus.

Starts out flat and non-abrasive to the point you kind of forget you're listening to music, similar to shoegaze where the music just blends into the background like white noise. Picks up through the album but still feels like a flat soda to me, except the one song that sounds like a commercial.

Really warmed up to it as it went on - not a huge fan of the vocals initially, but they grew on me.

Good but a bit bland. Though, I do like some of the shoegaze elements and the Junkie song is oddly catchy.

It’s hard not to listen to this and compare them to BJM. Obviously The Dandy Warhols were more poppy and the hit pop tracks still stood out to me: Boys Better and Last Junkie. But a few other tracks caught my attention: Every Day Should Be a Holiday was up there for me too. However, the BJM comparison really kicked in for the last 2 tracks, Pete International Airport and The Creep Out with the minimal vocals and the droning repetitiveness. This is where I realized for sure that BJM was better even if they weren’t as successful as the Dandy Warhols.

At first listen a n enjoyable alt rock/power pop album from the late 1990s, though nothing is really too memorable on it and not sure that at repeat listen it would hold up that well. The album is around 20 minutes or 3-4 songs too long. Also, not sure why this album is included when 'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia' was a better album which also had a big hit on it. 3 out of 5.

Du rock contemplatif où la guitare s’illustre

Not terrible, but nothing special either. Three stars, but only just.

The first two tracks set a very promising template. What follows, fulfills this promise at times but is more often tedious and inconsistent.

It was okay, perhaps good. Was it great? Not sure. Was it unique? Not really. I may need to listen again. Three stars for now.

I always meant to check out this album. I liked the single from this LP, and appreciated their appearances in the Brian Jonestown Massacre documentary. This was less poppy than I expected, and not as interesting as I had hoped. It's a bit dated by 2024 standards and not quite as "classic" as this list may have thought it would be.

Some really cool and interesting moments on this record, but as with much of their output, at times it can really plod. Could have been a tight 11 track album, but instead feels exactly like a 70 minute long album in places

J'ai bien aimé cet album, très original comme style de rock. Ça me faisait beaucoup penser à du britpop (et apparemment c'était un peu le but), mais une version meilleure que presque tout ce que j'ai entendu de ce genre dans les 1001 à date. 7/10

Decent rock album, don't love it, don't hate it. Probably on the higher side of 3 I Love You gives off creepy uncle vibes Good Morning is a great track. Liked the opening few too and Cool As Kim Deal

I see Monster in this. When REM got fuzzy and also the Velvets getting non-seizure inducing tripped out. It has a firm identity. It completely works as a record. Everyday should be a holiday is a formative yeah. Cal me tomorrow for a 3 or 4* tricky now it is the perfect bridge. It's this fun because of the night or is it the hangover?

It’s fine. Really.

The melody on Every Day Should Be a Holiday is a complete rip off of Duran Duran’s Hungry Like the Wolf. That said, I don’t mind this record. It’s actually pretty cute. They remind me of Ride mixed with Smashing Pumpkins or My Bloody Valentine. It’s a real 90s feel. Last Junkie is really good. It can get a little same-y, a little droning. This is probably incredible on heroin or opium, or something. It can feel a little drawn out otherwise.

the best songs were the last 2 - the wierd, ambient, instrumental, electronic stuff is where these guys stood out. the rest of it was fine

They come over as trying to be a US version of early Pink Floyd. Sounds like 60/70's psychedelia in places. Generally I like it although some tracks are just too long and repetitive. Somehow they are missing "it" although I'm not sure what "it" is; perhaps a decent hook or riff that makes a track memorable. All-in-all good and listenable but not great. It was surprising to me that this was 1997, sounds much earlier.

a long meandering ironic droning shoegaze-ish MBV-but-more-poppy kind of album. Lots of enjoyable moments here but I would have preferred this album were like 15min shorter. 3/5

This was alrighty. I didn't mind it. It was a pretty long album though. I got 'Green' sstuck in my head for like half the day. I can't say much more, it wasn't really my style but it wasn't half bad either,

The songwriting is a bit bland, I'm a fan of a few of the songs but that does not a good album make.

Umm Yeah? A bit Power Pop, a bit American Brit Pop, a bit Stoner-Lite. It passes the time in a pleasant enough way, but never really engaged my interest. I couldn't hate it, but I wasn't enthused.
