Reviews (page 5 of 7)
This was not what I was expecting at all. It is a combination of different styles that mesh together quite nicely. It has some Belle and Sebastian influence for sure. The only negative i would say is that its a bit similar throughout and while it had me tapping my foot, it is not something i will remember and want to discover more about 3.5 stars
Fun and interesting album standout songs: Default Waveforms
Not really interesting to me. A little over the place for me
This is gonna get boring if I don’t get any crazy good albums soon…
Good beats, uninspired songwriting. Not great not terrible.
This is the second album on here that sounds heavily influenced by of Montreal but is inferior to them and came out 10 years later. If they don’t got Sunlandic Twins on this list then it’s a shit list. This isn’t a bad album, but it’s very scattered. And like I said they wear their influences on their sleeves, but don’t do enough to differentiate themselves from them.
Inoffensive but completely bland, so much so I apparently forgot to score it till much later, so I listened to it again
Surprised I enjoyed this. A mix of electronic and some interesting Middle Eastern rhythms. 2.5/5 Might listen again.
They sound like they’re going on an adventure.
Django Django's self-titled debut album is a interesting blend of jangly rhythms and folk-pop riffs, interspersed with some 60s psychedelic melodies, early 70s New Wave synths, and electronic beeps reminiscent of 80s video games. The album showcases a sonic diversity, yet still maintains a coherence. While there are decent tracks ("Hail Bop," "Firewater," "Silver Rays", and "Hand of Man,"), some songs like "Zumm Zumm" may become irritatingly overly repetitive. Additionally, the album suffers from track bloat, and its overall quality could have been improved by omitting some tracks, such as "Wor" and the instrumental piece "Skies Over Cairo." Overall, the album's notable strength lies in the band's willingness to explore different sounds. The album is certainly worth a listen, though its replay value may be questionable for most people. (Better than a 2, not quite a 3, rounding up)
Math rockish
Django Django is spares, full of harmonies, picking guitar and synth beats. It only clicked for me on side B, not that side A wasn’t good. I just didn’t get it til Hand of Man, Love’s Dart and Wor. Requires more listens. 6.9/10
No strong opinions
A good album that really takes me back but not quite as brilliant as I remember
Good listen but forgettable afterwards.
Fun album! Lots of variety in the music, yet it went together. I was dancing along enjoying myself.
There were a lot of interesting things going on with this album. Really enjoyed all the fun sounds they played with. It was upbeat and a good time. I didn’t love the vocals though. Something with how they were treating their voices got a little grating and brought this down a notch for me.
Hmm
Pleasant enough but sort of passed me by
A very Animal Collective sort of sound. Didn’t do much for me but not bad either. 5/10
Yeah it was good - much better than some of the stuff on this list but not overly memorable.
a decent beck album
Incluso otros discos suyos como Glowing In The Dark.
Kinda felt like I was in a Mario level for some of these songs
I don't understand the hype.
Some nice sounds, but the songs are a bit repetitive, and the whole thing feels a bit soulless.
I was only half listening but seemed pretty good.
It was OK
This was an interesting album. A little too repetitive for me. Didn't hate it, didn't love it either. I'm sitting on the fence for this one. I was listening to it during a very busy day, which may have helped or hindered their score, I'm not sure!
Django Django by Django Django. Sounds like it could be a lost experimental album by the Beach Boys. Also similar to Flaming Lips I guess. It was OK to hear once. Favorite track: Wor
- reminds me of Duran Duran somehow - is really cool to listen too - I love Hail bop and Firewater
Loved Hail Bop, Waveforms, and Default. The rest are fairly forgettable. Give it a listen though (and listen to hail bop if you’re only listening to one of them) Sort of like if sci fi and funk had a baby
frekar lofandi. augljós líkindi við beta band, blendingur og skrítin hljóð en minni hiphop-áhrif. gef þessu aðra umferð. 3,5.
3 - I feel like this album is good, but I just don't know if it deserves to be in the list. I think most new music needs to stand the test of time. Will we be talking about them in 20-30years
I love the vibe of this album. It has a very distinct sound despite none of the elements being particularly groundbreaking. There's a mesmerising robotocism in the rhythms juxtaposed with Eastern melodies on tracks like Life's a Beach and Skies over Cairo. The album cover is a very accurate representation of the music I'd say. That said the album kinda runs out of steam after the first few tracks, falling a bit flat. Replace Skies over Cairo with the Bullion remix and you'd have a much stronger album. Fave Tracks: Hail Bop, Default, Waveforms 3.4/5
Django Django - Django Django Album Review There’s something undeniably intriguing about Django Django—it’s playful, rhythmic, and packed with ideas, even if it doesn’t always hit the mark. The band fuses surf rock twang, krautrock repetition, and electronic flourishes into a sound that feels both familiar and futuristic, giving tracks like Default and Hail Bop an offbeat, almost hypnotic energy. The percussion-heavy grooves keep everything moving, while the layered vocals and psychedelic textures create a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere. It’s an album that thrives on its quirks, embracing an almost mechanical sense of rhythm while still feeling organic and loose. That said, the album’s ambition sometimes works against it. While the production is inventive and the melodies catchy, the tracks can blur together, with the band leaning heavily on repetition that occasionally borders on monotony. Some moments feel like experiments that don’t fully evolve, leaving certain songs more interesting in concept than execution. But even with its occasional lulls, Django Django is a fascinating listen—full of charm, creative instrumentation, and enough unexpected turns to keep things engaging. It may not be groundbreaking, but it’s a solid, enjoyable debut that proves the band has a unique voice worth hearing.
This is a well-produced album with a promising sound. In its best moments, there is vocal and acoustic guitar over a rhythmic and groovy electronic layer underneath. But... the promise is never quite fulfilled. I think it's because I don't find the lyrics compelling. That's mainly a statement of content, but perhaps delivery as well. It's not that the lyrics aren't creative; they're not overly simplistic. There's just nothing to lay hold of. Nothing that moves this from style to substance, for me at least. So, I can see why someone might love this, but for me it didn’t quite satisfy.
This album is an interesting mash-up of psychedelic pop sounds with some interesting techno flourishes and call backs to the 60s, but ultimately it lacks what made that time period so vital; a righteous cause. These guys are certainly talented, and the album did get a little better for me as it progressed, but in the end, I just wanted to go back and listen to better music.
Cool electronic stuff and stuff.
A perfectly fine album. Some interesting and fun ideas and throughout the full album but feels a little haphazard and maybe incomplete?
Reminds me of a specific time of my life! not bad in any way, but i've outgrown her <3
Perfectly fine! It didn’t stick with me as much as I thought it would from the start, and faces the same problems I have with a lot of indie music from around the same time.
-this is an album that sounds exactly like its cover. sort of like Tame Impala meets Beach Boys, but a little weirder -honestly a lot of it didn’t blow me away. some of the individual beats and sound compositions were much more interesting than the songs themselves. but there are some definite highlights in here so it still gets 3 stars -Favorites are Default, Love’s Dart, and WOR
One of Len’s ex wives had a kid called Eric Django Django. 3.2
Like many albums from this era, this one suffers from being both somewhat interesting and somewhat irritating.
There's hints of something really good here, but it doesn't quite make it for me.
Didn't mind it!
This album really reminds me of KNOWER, which is coincidentally also featured on GTA V (F the Makeup, Skip the Shower). Checks out, really. Outside of the above, nothing really stood out to me here. It's a fresh sound at least, and not British indie slop like I'm used to getting served up hot and fresh on this list. I'm sure this is someone's flavour, but to me it's plain vanilla. Still, enjoyed the listen.
Shitty overproduced 2010s indie rock that is very unfortunately good 7/10
As I have mentioned previously, I would think the authors of this book would have a little more consideration as to what they include in this list. It appears to me the only impact this album has had is having a song on the radio station nobody listened to in GTA5, Worldwide FM. This was okay, nothing to say but it's competently performed and enjoyable enough. The Honda Accord of albums. Vinewood Boulevard Radio for life. Highlights: Default, Storm (probably others but it was pretty forgettable I am sorry)
Interesting
This was fine, but definitely an album I could have never heard before I die. It felt like the band was having fun, yet their vibe wasn’t infectious to me as the listener. I didn’t hate it, but came away a bit indifferent towards it.
Hard to get into it. A couple great songs, but the intermediates, not quite as good.
25 isn’t the stone-cold classic 21 is
It’s refreshing! This album has elements of music I’ve heard before but sounds unique to them. Nice bop to their sound & wor is such a jam. I don’t imagine I’ll return much to it and certainly won’t be saving it as an album, but I appreciated the listen
Kinda beach boys , kinda noise machine
I kinda liked it, i dont have much to say. Probably wont be returning to the album but its not bad
This was really interesting to listen to, and I had just listened to the Spirtualized album "Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space" which I think was similar to this in a lot of ways. I'm going to go with an overall 3 and maybe not quite as good as the Spirtualized album but a fun listen
Nothing exciting here, but nothing to dislike either. Its whatever, its fine. Why on the list though?
Mostly covers, but good. More complex and interesting than I would have guessed.
You could have knocked me over with a feather that this album wasn't from the seventies! In retrospect, Django Django was very art rock, which had a big presence in the 1970s. What I liked most was that each song was different and unexpected. The music never went where you anticipated. I needed something unusual and different today, and Django Django delivered.
Intriguing, maybe even good, but I don't really know that it is a "must hear". There is some very interesting production on this album that makes it sound fairly unique among music of this type. For lack of better words, this is kind of like "new psychedelic music for the 2010s and beyond". But all in all, this was very mid, and not very groundbreaking. A weak 3 from me.
This was cerebral and not a bad listen. However, the first half of the album meandered a bit to much for my liking. The second half of the album, beginning with "Wor" was more cohesive and I really enjoyed those tracks. An extra star for those tracks.
There was a point about halfway through that I really started to lose interest. I think it was probably "Zumm Zumm", which seemed very repetitive to me. Somewhere around the end it picked up for me. I liked the goofiness of "Silver Rays," and "Skies Over Cairo" was good. Cut out some of the middle and I think I would have liked this more. Top tracks: "Hail Bop," "Default," "Skies Over Cairo," "Silver Rays"
Wow, Dimery and company really do a poor job selecting albums from more recent years. It's not bad. In fact, it's definitely ok. But it's not an album I needed to hear before I die. Liked the first few tracks most (the intro, Hail Bop, and Default). But it never really grabbed me. In particular, I didn't like Skies Over Cairo - the percussion has almost a "wet" liquidy sound that really annoys me. They recovered a bit with Silver Rays, a decent ending track, but by then I was definitely ready to move on.
Sound English as heck, but it's really a bit of nothing and everything. Some beats, some guitars. Not unpleasant to listen to, but doesn't really do something.
3.5
Not bad, but not amazing. I think the vibes of this album carry it in my mind. While Default certainly isn't the best song I've ever heard, it's so damn catchy I can't help how much I like it. I really enjoy the slight slowdown in the middle, of the album with Love's Dart. It feels unique, and it doesn't suffer anywhere, but it isn't really for me. Favorites were Hail Bop, Love's Dart, Life's a Beach, and Skies over Cairo
This sort of wonky indie rock is fun to me but not much more than that. I think I have maybe heard of this band before but had never given them a listen. The drums consistently sound really good. Favorite songs were Hail Bop, Firewater, Wor, and Life’s A Beach.
It has bop, but does it have muscle? It may, since the drummer is indeed the MVP (Rolling Stone magazine). It may not, since vocalist Vincent Neff does not have enuff oomff. Production and percussion wise tho, very cool. Check out ‘Firewater,’ Hand of Man,’ ‘WOR’ and ‘Storm.’ The Cairo one, too. Yep.
Bounces along. Self-serious 80's vibe
Never heard of this band before. I can't decide if I like them or not. If they can keep themselves from using dumb sound effects they kind of sound like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (which is a compliment). But I feel like they can't help but throw in dumb sounds to justify being an "art" band. There are some sections of this I would give a 4 and some a 1. Going to give it a 3 I guess.
Quirky - better than I expected based off the album cover. Didn’t analyze the lyrics, but I was interested enough to go back for a second listen at some point.
Sounds like British pop mixed with the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack. Another oddity.
6/10 I remember when this first came out that I wrote DD off as a throwaway electronic indie band. I was basically right, this is fine but really nothing special. The more electronic tunes work nicely, the ones with surf or western guitar less so. Not sure I needed to know they can knock out a Lawrence of Arabia style song. If I was going to be brutal - I guess I am - then i would say they sound like the Beta Band with all the weird edges smoothed off and overproduced to be more appealing Best: Waveforms
Fun album, pretty interesting
3.75
This was alright, but I didn’t like the style of the vocals; something about it was quite grating. I liked a lot of the backing music, but that was in spite of the singing for the most part.
I enjoyed Skies over Cairo, and Hail Bop was a nice FIFA tune. The rest was fine.
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this. I thought it was ok, but not something I will probably listen to again.
This was fine.
Merely ok.
I like the vibe they're going for and there's some fun songs on here, just a little aimless.
It's definitely not something I would have found on my own without this 'challenge'. I did, however, enjoy my time with it. Some very cool soundscapes, and great ambiance. It's not my thing, but I'm glad I tried it.
I liked the diversity of the record. A lot of different sounds and genres were incorporated which I enjoyed. What I enjoyed about it most is how "listenable" they made each song while also being very different. I find that can be a very trick combination but I think they executed it well. I think "Art Rock" is a very suitable genre for this band/album. It's artistic, it's different, but it works! I've never really been a fan of the "low effort" singing with any band, and this is no different. I think overall, it was interesting to listen to and easy to listen to. It might be an album that needs to digest and listen to multiple times in order to appreciate it more. 3/5
There were some really cool tracks on this record. Some of them were a bit out there and repetitive, but I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would.
This record is good, but it's also a symbol of how difficult it is to declare classic records before 20 years are up. Because while good, I don't know if it quite rises to the criteria of being an album I need to hear before I die. The second listen—a lot louder—was better than the first. I could feel the momentum through the first 4 songs but things did wane. A few tracks in the back half I might've cut entirely but they did a good job sequencing some strong songs (Wor, Storm, Life's a Beach) in there to keep the listener going.
This made for decent background music but I was hoping for a little more foreground.
Not bad.
Pretty good album, but after the first few songs it kinda bleeds together and eventually runs out of steam. The opening track, Default, and Hail Bob are great though.
Very Beta Band-y, but enjoyable for sure.
Strange but good
Liked it, unusual sound with beach boys and beck vibes.
I like this musically; lyrically, I could largely take it or leave it.
- I legitimately thought I would love this after the intro and the first track "Hail Bop." But then it all...did the exact same thing? - These tracks are definitely different from a sonic point of view. But the structures are all identical to the point of feeling like they were designed by AI. 1) Bizarre percussion / synth beats, preferably with random sound effects that Beck would give a side-eye to. 2) Unaltering rhythm. Not fast. Slow, but not tooooo slow. 3) Monotonous vocals layered into harmonies. - Not shocked that much of this albums Wiki page is focused on the commercials these songs have been in. I hate none of it. But, for being "art rock," it feels weirdly safe?
Surprised how I liked this one!
Hm this first track sounds cool! Not sure what kind of music this will be. Let's have a peek at the wiki info. British art rock band? okay....Meh, it was alright 3 stars
A bit boring, but offensive upbeat daft punk inspired indie.
Psychedelia meets Electronica… and it is quite exciting..
Hadn’t heard the whole album but have had the song “Default” on a playlist of mine and liked it. The album is uneven but has a few I’d listen to again.
This is an album that I feel that I should like, but I just can't get into it. In a way it reminds me of Field Music, who make similar indie music that's slightly more interesting and intelligent than the norm, but unlike say, Alt-J, none of their music, nor Django Django's really capture my imagination. Three stars feels harsh, but I can't think of a reason why I'd want to listen to this again - I gave it three full playthroughs and still couldn't pick out a song other than Default, which I already knew.
After glancing over the reviews I was expecting a masterpiece, not so a reality. 3/5
Veelbelovend begin in elk geval!
Strange sequel for such an excellent movie, but nice vibes all around.
Better than average alternative pop for the 2010s. I was aware of Default and Hand of Man (both pretty catchy songs). I find a lot of alternative pop of this vintage overworked, so the lofi production style I found fresh and enjoyable. Catchy tunes, decent harmonies, and a fun rhythm-led style. Moments of krautrock minimalism, which I dig. If I came across a vinyl copy for $20, I would buy it.
This sounds a lot like the beta band, but I must admit some of the songs are quite good. It does make sense though to ask why this album is on the list (just like the albums from ash, the vines, the thrills, the doves, the coral etc etc) whereas some truly great bands (beat happening, the clean, the chills, mission of burma, wipers, tall dwarfs etc) have been ignored completely.
This was reasonably entertaining, not more than that.
This is actually exactly what 2012 sounded like.
Albums I'm supposed to hear before I die and random flash in the pan 21st century indie bands, name a more iconic duo
If Vampire Weekend and The Shins had a baby and that baby had another baby with Gonzo the Great and that baby decided to do acid.
Very very average. It was so mundane and middle-of-the-road it sounded like it could have been created any time between 1965 and the present day - by a single person with a semi-decent casio keyboard bought from argos. Not one track stood out as excellent, equally none were dog-shit awful. I'll give 3 stars as I made it all the way through without considering turning it off (but that's maybe due to being in a coma from the blandness of it!)
Django Django. Other than that, it's a funny album with some lively music, that just becomes tiring after few songs. For some reason I've listened to it twice, once in a background, but it didn't inspire me to anything.
Is the D silent ? Always ?
A strange little beast, elements of 60s folk, psychedelia, surf rock, acid jazz... definitely a wild ride.
Good, but hardly essential. I remember Default was a hit here. I didn't know the other songs. They're not as annoying. Favorite song: Silver Rays.
I was prepared to be disappointed but within a few seconds of “Hail Bop” I realized that it was on the FIFA 13 soundtrack and FIFA soundtracks are always full of bangers. “Waveforms” is a good one in the same style. I wouldn’t quite classify this as landfill indie but it’s close. The production is too good for that and the songs are too interesting. Speaking of the production, I love the guitar on this album when it’s not just piped from acoustic. It’s super compressed and distorted to the point that it sounds like an electric twelve string. It’s been done before but I really like it. The vocal harmonies are also executed well, though I’m not sure if the singer is double/triple tracked or if it’s all of them. Either way it’s good. The second half of the album kind of lost me. Starting with “Wor” everything got a little derivative and simplistic. “Skies over Cairo” is literally just 12 bar blues but harmonic minor. Lazy! I think this is one of the better modernish albums we’ve heard but it is let down by a bunch of filler tracks that don’t distinguish themselves from anything else.
I wouldn't change the station if WBER started playing this.
It's a good listen, with a nagging rhythm that's quite distinct. What I would term an 'emusic classic' - when I had a sweet sweet account that would let me download 75 mp3s a month for not very much money from indie labels. But is it one of the 1000 best albums ever made? probs no. Emusic staggers on like a zombie, I left 5 years ago and some of the albums they had then are still on their homepage. Anyone still using it?
The cadence of every song was very similar. Not bad, but after two listens didn’t connect. Weirdly did enjoy it, so 3/5.
Very middle-of-the-road album. Nothing too interesting
Not my most careful listen, by any means. This felt like a sort of love child between Animal Collective, Tame Impala, and Glass Animals. Synth-heavy with overtones of psychedelia and a sort of "theatrical" tone to the vocals that I can't really quantify. As a whole, I enjoy this fine, but despite all of the relation to the influences referenced above, there is something about this that doesn't quite connect for me. It feels at times, overstuffed or over-processed and I didn't really find too many points were I was fully engaged. A few parts did stand out though: Skies Over Cairo, Default, Waveform.
Some really cool parts and some really strange parts in that whole album. A lot of the instrumentals I could get down with. But sometimes the singing was a little weird. This is a mid to high 3
Messy but enjoyable. As all over a clouds on an overcast day. Favourite track: Wor.
very cool but sounds like ad music
Each song is good but getting through the album was rough as they sounded the same after a while. Great Beach Boys melody, heavily soaked in the synthetizer silliness of the Beta Band and coated in campy tv commercial hopefulness.
Interesting, experimental music. Maybe in a different setting it would work better for me than it did now (I listened at the train station)
Pop-rock electrónico experimental. Ni fu ni fa.
I member buying this on the the strength of "Default". Didn't play it much. It's a bit unnemorable but still engaging The vocals very much remind me of the Beta Band. Decent.
60s psychpop harmonies and bright open sound and a touch of surf rock guitar tones + 70s krautrock driving rhythms + 00s indie synth maximalist instrumentation & production = an upbeat high energy immersive and engaging bit of fun.
5.5/10
It's an ok Art rock album. Some songs are good, but as a whole it's not very special.
Rando hipster indie junk that epitomizes 2012 sonically.
My first contact with Art-Rock. It's really distinctive. I don't particularly like it. Some tracks are borderline enjoyable, most just tolerable for me, but I'll give the album credit for being memorable.
3-
This sounded like a modern-day Beach Boys except for the weird song that sounded like it went with an establishing shot from Aladdin.
Buen nivel
Now here's finally something I never even heard about. Vocals were subpar but instrumentation was nice and inventive enough. Went to rym to rate it 3.5. 3 here because it's closer to a 3 than to a 4.
I like the instrumentation and the way the songs flow, but something about the singing just sounds amateurish to me and really holds me back from enjoying this. If I wanted something in this sound I am just going to stick to King Gizzard. 3.5
Definitely a weird one, lots of soundscapes, lots of different vibes and instrumentation, lotta synth/electronic sounds. I doubt I’ll listen to it again, but I enjoyed it.
folk, pop, and psychedelia all mixed together. pretty cool little album.
djangoooooo its the album that i write about here djangoooooo its the album that impales me with spears so dear fear fuck this album
Very weird. Like a schizophrenic Beirut. Not altogether unpleasant.
Meh
Psicodelia na medida de um pop agradável.
Very conceptual.
Hail Bop // Waveforms // Love’s Dart // Storm // 3.5/5
Album 394 of 1001 Django Django - Django Django Rating : 3 / 5 Not a bad album, though likely forgettable. Listed as 'rock' but I would put it more in the pop category. Released in 2012 but has a sound of decades earlier.
Somewhat groovy and tuneful, bouncing along pleasantly enough, if to mostly anodyne effect. It's a bit overstuffed even as it seems mostly well controlled and thought-out. Perhaps they knew too well what they wanted to accomplish. The modest vocals fall flat after a time (because there's little to no modulation within or across songs) The melange effect does wear on the nerves after a time and suspects an intentional aiming for earworms, which leans to annoying. A bit too long, too. One has no real sense of why this record would or should command anyone's deathbed attention or even consume musical consumption time in the future. More meh than marvelous, this is ultimately forgettable.
techno with soft vocals.
Dig the album cover! 🏜️ It’s fun while it lasts, has some common ground with latter-day MGMT. 3.5 HL: “Hail Bop”, “Waveforms”, “Storm”, “Skies Over Cairo”
Definitely one of those I wouldn't have picked by myself. It's very reminiscent of late-60s/early-70s hippie music. The first band they sound like that comes to mind is Jefferson Airplane. Not bad music even though it's not my taste. There's some really solid orchestration and use of synth throughout
pretty good album, it felt like it sometimes blended together at points but overall good and was unique from other albums we’ve had
Yea, it's alright
Pretty weird but like I won’t listen to it on my own for funsies
Started off fairly interesting but pretty quickly lost my interest after that.
This was a very groovy album. I hate these ones where I enjoy listening but can't really pick out any songs I liked. I just enjoyed it. Also, too many Djangos. Even Beetlejuice knew three was almost too many.
This one was interesting, not entirely sure what genre we are in. Some really exciting drum sequences, there's a groove to this album that's unmistakeable. I know nothing about this group, but I'm enjoying their style. Django Django Django Django Django? What does it all mean? Favorite tracks: Firewater, Waveforms, Wor, Silver Rays. Album art: What am I looking at here? This image is about as indecipherable as the genre of the music. Some whirling, twirling thing in a sand dune, at first glance I thought it was supposed to be some kind of creature but it's...I don't know, energy? Very cool cover, I like not knowing what I'm looking at. 3.5/5
I'm not a fan...
The repetitive loop bits tend to go from charming to really annoying really quickly.
Britisk art pop, tilpas skørt og tilpas chill
Ok 3/5
I enjoyed this more than I thought. Has a fun vibe
It was alright, makes for nice back ground music, i ended up listening to it twice, because i couldn't remember it the first time around.
Could see the Waveforms of these songs in the Skies Over Cairo. Felt the Hand of Man manipulating these forms as a Storm sends Firewater down.
Interesting and fun but often I wasn't sure what exactly I was listening to. That may have been the point? Default has moments of 60's flower-power vibes mixed with movie background music ambiguity. Firewater is total dissonance between vocals and percussion. Hard to describe. Not awful, not great, just kind of there.
I listened to this multiple times to try and get a feel for it but I just kept getting tired of it. It seems like something I should be into but just never got there. Good background music but not so great in the foreground.
Much better than I expected! Liked it.
I've listened to this a few times now, and still can't quite say what I make of it...
I'm initially impressed by two things with this album: (1) it's a 21st-century selection, which seems to be a rarity for this project; and (2) Wikipedia has almost nothing on this album or the band, making it hard to get a feel for why this might have been included in the 1001-album collection (unless it was because a few songs were featured in ads and video games?). My initial impression is of a not-particularly distinctive sound or band, with not very interesting lyrics or beats, but playable enough as background music. Some tracks minded me of a mashup of Blue Man Group, Beta Band and Meat Puppets (especially "Default" and "Firewater"), and the "WOR" video definitely caught the can't-look-away effect of the wall-of-death attraction. I enjoyed listening to the album, but have a hard time understanding why this made the cut instead of one of their other albums, or some other band altogether...
Pretty damn good. Definitely of its time. Animal collective inspired
Didn't listen to it the whole way through. Interesting band and cool videos for some of the songs. However, started to get very repetitive overall half way through. The notes would change, but the overall meter of the songs were nearly identical and monotonous.
Pretty good, liked the sound. Not much else to say about it tbh.
wish it were a tad bit shorter but still an enjoyable listen 3.5
I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this given its description as a "British art rock band". Maybe it was the low expectations. Was it all great? Not even close. It definitely dissolved into some "artsy" nonsense near the end but the opening tracks were solid and there's a lot of actual artistry on display here. Enough to easily earn it passing marks.
Enjoyed it, good for listening when working. Not anything that really jumped out
***
Never heard of this band or album before - somehow completely passed me by. I liked this a fair bit. I'm going to give it a strong 3, but intend to listen to it more, and suspect that with repeated listening it could end up as a fairly solid 4.
A fun listen.
Really wears its influences on its sleeve. Animal Collective, Neil Young, and The Beach Boys really pop, but I think often it's a watered down version of them. I think there might be a reason why as somebody that religiously consumed indie music in 2012 I missed this one. 3.5/5
I liked the vibe of this album, but it still didn’t really stand out to me all that much Top tracks: Life’s a Beach
Stundtals är det väldigt bra.
This was actually quite cool. I am rating this a while after listening - still liked how new and fresh it felt. I wish we heard more stuff like this in pop music bc I’d like to hear more things like this.
Decent danceable indie pop, but an essential recording? Not in my book.
Music was good, the singing not bad, but did not really fit the music.
3.54 I really liked the intro but it'll have to be a 3* because it all became quite tiring by the end
This album was better than I expected it to be. I liked the upbeat sound and all that. The vocals were just okay.
Some decent songs.
3.4
Nice
The first album that I remember listening to the year it came out! Wow! Seems like kind of a random pick honestly. Saw them at Lollapalooza a few years back. Good show. Haven't really thought of them in years. I feel like it's a slightly more accessible version of like Animal Collective. "Default" and "Waveforms" are great tracks.
Reminds me of Beach Boys, only it's 50 years later and more modern. Interesting and fun, but not something I'd listen a lot to.
I was 4 songs into this one when I realized it was not the Byrds album I got before anymore lol. Nah it’s catchy and Django Django has that “you have to check it out” aura still after all these years.
- This album is funky - Good variety of sounds on this - Goes from trippy psychedelic on Waveforms to twangy guitar on WOR kinda wild - Another 3.5
- exotic sounds - singing is a little underwhelming - kinda feels like Two Door Cinema Club but folkier and worse -2.5 but I’ll round up for creativity
Pretty interesting and different!
Another quality addition to the list. This is an interesting indie rock release. Lot of ground covered on this album. It has a conceptual feel while remaining fresh track by track
Willis enjoyed it been a couple years since i listened to it but some others werent the biggest fans
I'm not sure if I like this because it's good, or if I would have been the target demographic for this material when it came out. I think it's OK though? Maybe it loses its initial inertia about halfway through. This is such a vague review. Sorry.
Nice music in the continuing line of synth - sounds of britpop
Pretty groovy
I had never heard of them. Good album. 3
Not sure why but I found myself pulled into this album. Drumming consistently on my desk as I listened. May never listen again but glad it came up.
Y’all ain’t slick the drums in Skies Over Cairo are from Donkey Kong Country. I wish the rest of the music was as good as DKC but this was fine (2.5/5)
One or two songs were enjoyable but overall not really my type of album.
Nothing really stuck out here, but it was pleasant enough.
It's ok 2.5 stars
This might be one of the only 2010s indie rock albums I didn’t overwhelmingly enjoy. It wasn’t bad in any way but there were only sporadic moments on songs like default and life’s a beach that really engaged me in any way. Maybe it’ll get better on relisten but currently it’s just average modern art rock with vocals that occasionally made me think of The Beach Boys for some reason.
I didn't mind this one but no track really stood out to me.
Pretty good
Trippy art rock. Good debut with some nice bits
3.7 - I’m really into electro-psychedelic bands of this era, like Panda Bear and Tame Impala. Within this family of records, this one is like a dorkier cousin. I do like the Beach Boys-esque harmonies, reminiscent of “Person Pitch”, and the sleek arrangements similar to “Lonerism.” This record is a worthy addition for anyone who loves the genre but it definitely falls short of those other touchstones. I hadn’t heard this before so I’m happy to add it to my mental repertoire but I really hope Dimery’s British cultural protectionism hasn’t excluded those better neo-psychedelic examples in favor of this lesser British band.
Yeah yeah
Do not dislike.
Melodic indie nerds.
3/5 interesting, but not enough
Var búin að gleyma þessari. Fín plata!
Listened Before? N This is classified as art rock on Wiki, but it feels more cohesive to me than most other "art rock" albums are. It feels more like a modern pop album but also very reminiscent of some new-wave stuff, especially Devo. Lots of synth and harmonies. I don't hate this music. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Default
Started off strong but started to fizzle out for me. Vocals are a bit rote and a bit too care-free for my style, though it sounds like a fun time is had by all for sure.
Aimless meandering jungle-drum music. Like John Congas (which I loved) but without any musical interest for me. I played it in the kitchen while unloading the dishwasher etc, and after 10 minutes I forgot it was on. Just didn't catch my attention at all. Not unpleasant, just... well, just nothing.
Pretty good. Not great.
Catchy and fun but sounds like every other indie band from 2012
Fair to moddling
This was interesting, background music with decent percussion
Music and production: 5 stars. Lyrics and vocals: 1 star. Wtf is this album. 3.5 stars
Not objectionable, really, but not great. Maybe I'd vaguely heard of this band, but had no idea what to expect. To put it in the worst way... like Mumford & Sons, plus bleeps and bloops. Animal Collective + Americana. Better than it could have been, but sounded silly on occasion.
Good
Solid throughout without ever being spectacular.
Really nice vibe… Catchy music but it all kind of sounded the same. Overall, I enjoyed it though. 0 songs saved on my playlist
The first listen as background music while with company was not enjoyed but I liked the second one more as I heard more nuances.
Quite enjoyed this. Kind of interesting for what essentially is a twangy guitar band. Very modern Indie in places (not necessarily a bad thing) and I did find myself humming along to some of the tunes here. Skies Over Cairo jarred a little and I wouldn't have been missed if it had been left off, but it did clue me in to the fact that they are basically an Indie guitar band with random other sounds thrown into the mix.
I usually stay well clear of art rock; I don't art, I don't like rock. But this has a wonderful rambling feel to it. It sounds like a clean living version of Alabama 3.
Didn't listen that much, but didn't dislike anything.
Syd-era Pink Floyd meets Tame Impala? Yeah, it works. Mostly.
Never heard of them but this was fairly enjoyable
Not bad! Pretty catchy and groovy and different.
Bit weird and nothing great but decent and listenable
Middle of the road feelings on this one. I shall score it a 3
I like this. I hadn’t heard of them or heard their music before — and of course the band’s name made me wonder if we were going early acoustic jazz here, but I learned from their Wikipedia article that the band claims their name has nothing to do with Django Reinhardt — and I found the album enjoyable overall. Very skilled musicians and interesting compositions. Reminds me a little of the Meat Puppets, who I also like.
It's alright
I’ve heard parts of 4-5 songs on this album as jingles, ad breaks, and video game inserts. It’s nice to hear the native album - an electronic pastiche of bemusement.
3.5
Electro-strano-bello, tipo "Default". Poi peggiora
Pleasant surprise.
Dull
Pretty good first half but trails off
The influence of this album appears to be that it's been chopped up and included in a million car and insurance commercials, in which case, why should I hear it before I die? It's already been force fed to me. Best track: Wor. (HTL)
It's okay, I love track Default. WOR is good too. What a jam, but the entire album is very tiring on the ears. It's like the bass is at 100% max volume the whole time and it doesn't let up. I can't quite explain it. My ears were begging for moments of silence or something. The synth and instruments are good, but that lower end is just so in your face the whole time. It's distracting.
Interesting, lacking bass a lot of times. Seems they would be not bad live to be fair, the album itself is put together well but some stuff is quite basic and static which may be their target.
A unique blend of sounds. Not sure what to do with it though.
This very short review of the album is spot on: "Begins like a John Carpenter soundtrack - very exciting. Then some catchy indie-dance reminding me of Hot Chip collaborating with Beta Band. Good music." Couldn't phrase it better. So I'm not gonna add anything. I somehow missed this band when they released this debut. But I've since caught up with them. Their 2021 LP (Glowing In The Dark) was pretty good. But their 2023 release (Off Planet) is just awful. A cheesefest of epic magnitude. Even worse than The 1975. Which is quite a feat, I gotta say. 🙃 To return to this debut, I'm gonna put this in my "waiting list" to see if it grows on me. I enjoyed quite a lot of this record. But somehow, I'm not so sure it's gonna stay with me in the long run. Wait and see. Number of albums left to review: 481 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 245 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 117 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 155
I’m usually somewhat weary of the more recent additions on here for whatever reason, but this wasn’t bad. Never even heard of these guys, but this is decent experimental rock, the kind that feels fresh and modern but is clearly indebted to the past. I probably wouldn’t spin it again but I respect it’s existence. C
Never heard of these guys. I liked the energy from the album. Was perfect for a Monday AM. I’d say 3.5 but i think i’m going to round down.
Like a lot of albums at this point in time and genre. Couple of great tunes then just a bit bland. Default a great tune the rest a bit flat.
Not that bad!
The fallout of Radiohead continues with this indie group. Electronic beeping, the occasional catch melody, evidence of guitars and sometimes a polyrhythm. Radiohead make it seem so easy! Best Tracks: Default; Firewater; Wor
Pretty nice listen 3/5
There's a lot going on here, and it doesn't all feel cohesive. You can really sense that the band had a lot to prove (or at least they think they did). Was not surprised at all to find one of the member's has a parent with a blue name on Wikipedia.
Starts off nice with Jarre-esque synths, but then evolves to mediocre pop with mediocre songs. Too bad. 2.5/5
KGATLW by way of beach boys. I liked the timbres, but structurally it isn't particularly nuanced. The vocals lean very heavily into the beach boys Brian Wilson sound, and it works as background music, but it gets very samey. Otherwise, a good groove throughout.
I didn't know what to expect with this album but it ended up being a very fun and enjoyable listen!
This was a weird album. It wasn't bad and I'll give it credit for uniqueness. I won't come back to this though
Pretty nice. Sounds fresh (maybe because of how old the other albums are, but still). Liked Life's a Beach the most
Catchy, and annoying in equal measure.
Unique and enjoyable, but repetitive, can't do a whole album.
Somewhat uneven but overall decent. Quite arty and experimental.
Interesting Indietronica. Reminds me of LCD Soundsystem if their major influence was The Beach Boys.
gave this another listen and still like it . intresting music and good to listen to in the back ground
Leuk!
Lekker vrolijk en up-tempo.
Verrassend leuk!
This felt long and I was surprised that it was only 50 minutes. That said I didn’t dislike it. Might have to give it another listen.
I'd give this a listen again. Never heard of them before. Some songs, like Zumm Zumm, sound like the soundtrack to a video game. Standouts: None Others: Hail Bop, Default, Firewater, Zumm Zumm, Rating: 3/5
Even after listening to this, I don't remember anything about this album.
Blast from the past this. Served best with camel chinos and a bottle of bulmers pear cider. Can't say it offers too much more than default though, a pretty easy listening album but could easily be any band from the time
(-.-)...zzz
petite aprem tranquillou rien à signaler
I would be impressed, if this had been done like 50 years ago. But well.
I don't know what to think about this album. It has high points. It has low points. It is a bit more than 3 but not enough for 4
Different! I liked it!
Nice surprise, good tip for if you need to relax.
Django Django is the debut album by British art rock band Django Django. This electronic rock/neo-psychedelia album was full of groovy, trippy tracks. It was well received by critics and the public, being certified silver in the UK. Their debut album tried its best at bringing back psychedelia rock into the mainstream. I really enjoyed this album, partly for the rock type beats and also for the electronic music elements. I believe more people should be introduced to this album, so give it a listen if it's recommended.
Rock alternativo.
Música ambiental sin pena ni gloria
This was an album I haven’t heard before and exceeded my expectations. I thought it was light, minimal, and innovative. The beats were pretty simple and easy to enjoy. The lyrics were like an 80s tone of robotic speak. Overall it was something I’d revisit and listen to more. 7.2/10
