Reviews (page 4 of 7)

The indie tribal/jungle/neo-white soul scene was an odd sub genre in the early 2010’s it lasted as long as it took to feel a little queasy about maybe being culturally insensitive kind of? This band, Jungle, tame impala, Chet faker to name a few. It’s strong poppy and catchy, but I can’t help but recall tiny-insta-neon party girls at music festivals wearing skimpy bikinis and native headdresses. I say this as a white man, and still forming this theory

Maybe it was the surfer meets electronica as part of the soundtrack for a Tarantino move but this was definitely not an uninteresting listen.

I did not expect to like this, because it’s “Dance” and because I had never heard of them. But some of it was great! Good beats, eclectic, psychedelic and always surprising. I’m going to have to spend more time with this album

Usually when I hear the term "art-rock," I run for the hills. But this album genuinely wasn't bad. It had a nice groove. Sounds like an album out of time, using a lot of interesting elements. "Skies Over Cairo" was the favorite track this time.

I didn't feel anything about this. Not terrible, not great. It sort of grabbed my attention at first, but after a few tracks nothing stood out.

Yeah, this didn't do it for me. Here we have another questionable inclusion from the 2010s, Django Django's self-titled debut from 2012. This is, unsurprisingly, a British indie band, because of fucking course it is. The band has electronic and psychedelic elements in their music, because of fucking course they do. This album is basically just "What if the Beta Band were only somewhat boring instead of completely boring?" Fortunately, unlike those guys, I only have to listen to one album from Django Django, so I'm not as upset about this as I was with those two albums. The band's sound is alright, though nothing really stuck out to me in either a good or bad way. The vocalist was not my favorite. The writing had some nice elements to it, but it wasn't outstanding either. This album isn't bad, but I do not care about it enough to vouch for its inclusion on this list at all. I get that 2012 didn't have a ton of excellent albums out there, but surely there were better albums to include than this, right? They could've at least thrown in The Money Store. That would be a 5/5. This? Not my thing. Low 3/5.

There’s some real inspired and interesting music here. There’s also some pretty underwhelming vocals, both in content and delivery that cheapens the whole thing. Firewater is my favorite example of this, as the singer sounds like he’s rushing to fit all the words in, and none of the words are worth it.

I listened to this in college but not since. I remember thinking it was a super fun bit of sonic escapism, and after listening again, I think the same. These medieval spaghetti western bops scratch my brain. 3.5.

Ei niin hirveää mitä aluksi ajattelin. Moninpaikoin miellyttävääkin elektropoppia. Parempi ku mid.

Is this like Math Rock or whatever they called it? Not sure how I felt about this one so I’ll give it a three and revisit at a later date.

Not bad but not something I would buy or add to my collection. 3/5

3.2 3x reminds me of beta band and fun, but not memorable

This sounds like modern 60s psychedelic pop/rock. Definitely a Beach Boys vibe. The music is ok, but I'm not a big fan of the vocals. Too much droning, and the harmonies just sound off on a lot of the tracks.

I had never heard this before. There is a lot of potential here, especially in The rhythms, but it just comes up a little short. It's actually not too bad, just forgettable. I had started playing it and then forgot it was on like five times. It wouldn't bother me if this was on in the background but I can't see intentionally listening to it. I don't know why, but I can picture some of the songs on this album being an opening credits scene for a medical or crime drama series

Weird mix of pop and psychedelic. Sounds like an album made earlier than 2012. Decent though!

Another really underwhelming post 2010 album

I thought Django Django was alright -- kind of reminds me of a cross between Modern Guilt-era Beck and a less weird Animal Collective. "Default" and "Hail Bop" were my favorites. 3.5 stars.

Good in the sense that it’s a bit different from the usual new wave stuff you get around here, but it’s not something I’d actively listen to again

An interesting mix between something like edm and rock, not something I would listen to regularly but happy to have heard it.

I kinda like this except for the singers. I’ll probably never come back to it, but I don’t hate it at all. Actually, the more I listen, the less I’m into this. It wears on you. I think a lot of this feels like it goes nowhere. And I really hate the singers. I don’t even think they’re objectively bad singers, but somehow they take away from any enjoyment I’m able to scrape out of this. It’s the damndest thing. 6/10

I enjoyed Django Django "Django Django" much more than I thought I would.

idk what to do with this. I liked some songs and didn't like others.

This album is very weird, but I like it. It's repetitive but never gets annoying. I would show this album to friends.

if this was made in the 80s I would be like "WOW THIS IS GOOD" but otherwise it is pretty mid and does not belong on this list

It was fine, some enjoyable pop songs. Nothing fantastic but nothing objectionable 5/10.

it's not bad album, but the vocals annoyed me

Wanted to like this more than I did. Repetitiveness in these songs definitely has a lot of charm and makes them super catchy and fun, but over 40 minutes of that somehow feels like too much. 3⭐️

The band finds one interesting sound and reuses it multiple times with little variation. The production is kinda cool, but it does get a little repetitive. Therefore, I give this album three Djangos out of a possible five Djangos.

Standouts Waveforms Zumm Zumm WOR ... Silver Rays

Not too bad

Another band which I feel is simply mid and would never be considered “must listen” material. But at least they weren’t complete shit, and didn’t merely make noise or scream at you.

I do like this genre and era of music (this does sound like yeasayer) but this was just fine - nothing grabbed me - similar rating to the Janet Jackson album I gave a 4 but should have given a 3

Too samey after a bit. There is a fine line between interesting/catchy and annoying.

I kind of liked this album. It's rock with just the right amount of electronic thrown in, and it has plenty of harmonies. It's a high-3 for me.

If this had leaned into the Beta Band vibe you get with songs like 'Default' more, I would have given it a 4 star. But there's another that roams too far afield into sort of a neo-exotica realm, that drags it down a little.

Expected to like this given it's got such heavy Beta Band vibes and kind of sounds like Animal Collective at times. But somehow, mashing those two things up didn't actually improve either.

guess this is also one band that have been hailed as the savior of rock and roll... but theyre just kinda ok im hesistating on giving the 4 but im not doing it 3.75/5

I feel slightly harsh giving this a three. Truth is, it found it pleasant and quite familiar but not especially exciting. There are a few elements of weirdness that make me think if I go back and listen again that I’ll rate it higher.

Oh yeah, I remember that Default song now. The rest is a tad bit repetitive but otherwise fine. 2.5⭐️

I found this kind of nice to listen to while I was working.

Psychedelia so good that they named the band twice.

British Art Rock color (or shall we say colour) me intrigued. It reminds me a lot of the Beta Band and that is not a bad thing, inf fact this is a good thing cause I like the Beta Band. While not a great album and pretty good album I would not change the radio dial (or new playlist for the youngs) if they came on.

better than I thought it would be based on the album cover and first few minutes. like a boppier more upbeat Air.

Highlights: Hail Bop, Default, WOR and Life’s a Beach. 3.4

прікольний тріп

Fun first impression!

I liked this a bit more than I thought I would.

Good solid indie fun. A hint of the nu-rave sound in there, a little bit of bluntly quite annoying vocal effects, but overall it was pretty good. Is it something where it's obvious why this would be in the 1089 most important albums to listen to? Not really - and we're getting dangerously close to cast iron confirmation that this lunatic thinks it's better to listen to things like this that Neutral Milk Hotel, but that's not Django Django's fault I guess.

Experimental from the 10s.

I loved this when it came out but probably hadn't listened to it for a decade. Not as great as I remember but still good fun

Very listenable album - missed them the first time around but enjoyed this. Reminded me of The Beta Band. Ended strongly.

An enjoyable listen but not really my thing. A bit too happy and pop for me. But didn’t make me want to switch it off. :D

love the instrumentals and the production, it nails the bled between exotic and glitchy with them synths and the percussions, but the lyrics and the vocal performances make the project fall a bit flat for me it shines more when it goes folky rather than jammy, nice discovery tho definetely some tracks that im going back to

Default is a cracking track, I remember loving that from first time around. All bleeps and jumps with a pounding rhythm driving it along. The rest : broadly acceptable

Really enjoyed the first few songs but then found myself losing interest. A little bit long maybe.

So this album tries to be all sorts of things, like a mix of old school beach vibes and super-techy electronic beats, kind of in that folktronica space. The production is super clean, and they try some cool genre stuff, but it gets a bit much. The singing is a bit off, and even though some tracks have good energy, it gets repetitive after a while. It's alright to have on in the background, but it's not super memorable or emotional. It definitely sounds like an indie-pop record from 2012, but it feels more like a bunch of ideas put together than actual songs. It's catchy for a bit, but listening to the whole thing? Pretty boring and doesn't really live up any kind of hype.

Listened in the car and at work. It's fine but it sounds like Spencer Krug's lost British twin who can't write particularly exciting songs. When the Wiki page describes these guys as Art Rock I expected something a bit more out than this. It's good but didn't fall in love or anything.

I just listened and already forgot everything.

Bit of a mixed bag. Started off really well and my foot was tapping it's way through a lot of the songs. Zumm Zumm is quite annoying and a few songs fall a bit flat but overall quite enjoyable.

Fun to listen to at times, but I can see this become annoying at others Love's Dart and Wor were bangers though

like some of Beck's stuff but not quite as good

I've never heard of this artist before and have to admit was pleasantly surprised. Some krautish influence, a bit of psychedelia, interesting work with some memorable moments. At least 3 stars for sure and the one to REVISIT

Something I've heard a few times before, but unexpected for it to show up on this list. I appreciate occasional synthesizer they mix in to an otherwise quite rocky-setup. 'Default' is probably the most interesting song on this album, but there are a few other as well. A feeling that present itself after finishing the album is that many of the songs sound very similar to each other. It's always a fine line between staying coherent and also mixing it up and keeping it interesting, but in this case it occasionally becomes hard distinguishing songs from each other. I think this is a quite interesting album with a sound that is quite unique to the group. But at the same time it lacks something for me, and I'm not sure what. Strong 3.

62/100. An interesting indie pop record and I did enjoy it overall but I also felt like it could have had more flavor in it. It is a very cool debut that shows a lot of promise and a unique vision for what indie music can sound like in a digital age. The upbeat energy and the clever use of percussion make it a fun listen.

whatever

It's like you took some run-of-the mill british psych rock band from the early 70s and added in some modern electronics. The album sounds really good. Like the mix feels great. But the songs just don't really seem to go anywhere. They feel kinda apathetic.

Decent listen.

Rating: 6.5/10

Sounds like it's trying to be Animal Collective but they're too afraid to go overboard with the psychedelics. I didn't mind it though, just not sure it belongs on the list

Not bad

saw a comment saying if tame impala and the beach boys had an awkward child this album would be it. and i kinda agree.

I don't usually like this type of music, but this album is okay. 3 stars or C+.

Een acquired taste zullen we het maar noemen

Very enjoyable album. Kind of suprised to see it on the list. It is quite out there and while it does not feel groundbreaking or anything it is a fun listen. 8/10 [KEEP]

Solid 3 for me, the style wares thin over the course of an LP for me but the singles are undeniably groovy and fun and i retain my fond memories of this record

Beach Boys meets electronica. Interesting as stuff - cinematic and colorful. Cool vocal spaces

This album was easy to listen to, but it was also a bit boring in some parts. I can't think of a stand out song, but it wasn't bad overall, so that's why I give it a 3.

Solid, but we have Animal Collective at home.

Good beats

Django Django (2012) is the debut studio album by Django Django. I hadn’t heard of Django Django before listening to this, their debut album, but it turns out they are a four piece who met at Edinburgh College of Art, but the band itself was formed in London in 2009. Django Django is their self-titled debut album released three years later. They play art rock or electronic psychedelic indie rock. On a first listen it didn’t really grab me; it’s a bit all over the place and lacks any anything I can really connect to emotionally. On listen two and three it began to grow on me; there are plenty of catchy songs and I enjoy the vocal harmonies. But really, it just goes on too long and most of the songs have the same rhythm and tone, and the vocal mix in many of the tracks takes second place to the electronic beats. ‘Firewater’ and ‘Hand of Man’ were my two favourite tracks as they have a more retro folky harmonic sound. Apparently several of the tracks were used in computer games, adverts and TV but none of them were familiar to me. Side A: 1. Introduction - 1/5 2. Hail Bop - 3/5 3. Default - 3/5 4. Firewater - 4/5 Side B: 1. Waveforms - 3/5 2. Zumm Zumm - 2/5 3. Hand Of Man - 4/5 Side C: 1. Love’s Dart - 2/5 2. Wor - 3/5 3. Storm - 3/5 Side D: 1. Life’s A Beach - 3/5 2. Skies Over Cairo - 1/5 3. Silver Rays - 2/5

Pretty interesting, but feels long.

A bit repetitive, but catchy

Quirky in spots, meh in others

This album feels like watered down Daft Punk. There are some hints of really great musical ideas, but they are buried under aimless song direction and extreme repetition. The vocals also becoming tiring by the end of the album. There are no counter melodies, no call and response, no unique harmonies, just vocals in the same type of chord over and over. Another case of overhyping a UK band for this list.

Oh yay another electronic album. Though this has a lot more real instrumentation and influences from all over. Kinda felt like a trail mix album with lots of 60’s pop vocals. Aight 5/10

Interessantes und abwechslungsreiches Experiment mit rhythmischen, leicht psychedelischen Sound. Mehrstimmiger Gesang, Elektronische Elemente kombiniert mit Gitarren, sehr tanzbare, experimentelle Arrangements.

It’s fun and has some good moments, but it’s far from essential.

Some fun ideas. Better than your average Brit rock album

Frustrating. Good moments that go nowhere

According to Wikipedia this album was used in a lot of soundtracks and advertisements, and I can kind of feel that. It isn't bad, but it all kind of sounds the same, and has that very distinct aesthetic that makes you feel like you're playing legend of Zelda after a while.

A pretty interesting experiment, and some good lyrical work to be sure. Seems right down the middle of this list, so three stars.

Some interesting percussion but the vocals are a bit sleepy, probably a 2.5-star album but gets a slight boost for thankfully not being another Tim Buckley album.

me likey

This is perfectly fine and occasionally pretty catchy, but it feels like it’s missing something that would help it stand out from the pack. There are some enjoyable moments, yet nothing really pushes it beyond being just another solid indie record.

Didn’t know this group at all. My initial reaction to the first track was good, but eventually I grew weary. The songs all sound very similar to me. Another reviewer noted the Beach Boy style harmonies and now i can’t un-hear that. I’m one of the few people who dislikes Pet Sounds, so that’s not a plus. Their sound is kind of unique to them, but it’s like they found a formula and never strayed from it. It’s not a bad formula, but growth would be good.

I have a soft spot for this album, it was one of the first albums my eldest child got into as he was forging his musical tastes and was a shared love of ours. That said… the music well it sounds like a synth pop band and a garage rock band combining to write theme tunes for retro futurist sci fi shows . Which can only be a good thing

Después de una segunda escucha se asimila

It’s nice. 3’5

It’s ok

Interesting but not exciting. 3 *

This was decent enough while it was on. It has a cool, slightly quirky indie vibe and some interesting production choices that keep it from feeling totally generic. That said, nothing really stuck out. It worked fine as background music, but once it ended, I couldn’t point to a track I was dying to replay.

Good album, dont really know a lot of Django Django, will probably give it another listen

Weird and pretty cool, couple of tracks I dig. 3 stars

Got hopeful it was gonna be tribal style, but it was just dance music, which is alright I suppose.

I never heard of this group but I did enjoy this record. Enough to start losten to their other stuff.

This sounds like a more psychedelic Beta Band, or like a more analog, slightly less weird Animal Collective. They’re playing around with electronics and effects, and I sometimes get the sense these art school guys have more creativity and ideas than actual musical chops, which is not a criticism. They achieve good things layering vocal and percussion tracks and using harmonies over loops and uncomplicated melodies, though I can live without the track “Zumm Zumm” and the lyrics sometimes draw undue attention to themselves. 3.5 stars.

Another 2000s indie rock album that itself isn't bad and has some nice moments, but has no business being on a list like this.

Never heard of these guys. But very interesting so far. Like beach boys mixed with electronic beats. Interesting. It’s cool.

Well, a little unexpected to be honest. A lush sounding record which reminded me a bit of a crossover between Franz Ferdinand and the Byrds at first. Updated 60s psychelia with harmonies and terrific sounding guitar tones. I’d never sat down and actually listened to an entire LP of Django Django previously. I can’t recall actually hearing any of the tracks before although it is possible. One of the failings of age is that you encounter a shit ton of music in a lifetime. And mist of that music you might never revisit. And that might be the primary benefit of this exercise of listening to one album a day - you either encounter a new record, you engage with a record you might know or you might discover new ideas about those that are familiar. This record is like that. A couple of catchy tunes helps this record- Firewater, Default and Life’s a Beach. Otherwise it gets a bit repetitive and loses its immediacy in the 2nd half. Solid record overall and good for a relisten and perhaps a couple of adds to the ever expanding playlist that will never be listened to in full ever. More like a record keeping device for the cognitively impaired. 3/5

Very psycho pop and reminds me a bit of the Beatles in their psycho-pop era. I can't tell if I like this album or not. I love a couple songs, but the album as a whole feels too monotonous.

Duty Now For the Future era Devo, Beach Boys vocal harmonies, and...Crosby Stills and Nash maybe. 2 outta 3 aint bad.

Very cool

Vocals got a little annoying after 5 songs where they sound the same. Not a terrible sound though.

Introduction 3.5 Hail Bop 3.8 Default 3.7 Firewater 3.4 Waveforms 3 Zumm Zumm 3.2 Hand of Man 3 Love's Dart 2.5 Wor 3.3 Storm 3.3 Life's a Beach 3.4 Skies Over Cairo 3.2 Silver Rays 3.4 Score: 3.275

Fun album! If my life weren't in total upheaval this week, I'd probably enjoy it a great deal more.

Hey really listenable and fun if not able to get over being very indebted to AnCo

I believe it was Howard Hawks who said "A good indie psych pop album is three great songs and no bad ones."

Perfectly fine, but nothing really stood out to me

Didn't hate it, but honestly I don't know that this was in any way important enough, unique enough, or groundbreaking enough to be on this list. This is one of those early 10's indie bands I completely forgot about

Solid album, experiencing sounds that blend.

There were some good songs on here but my overall listening experience was lessened by the other crap on here.

There was nothing inherently wrong with the album, but it was missing that things that would have made it cool. Maybe they were just trying too hard when recording.

An album of several truly pulsating bits of genius, and a fair bit of lightweight, but nevertheless listenable, filler. I don't know what the heck the album cover means but it somehow feels very apt - arid desert reflecting the sparse beats, structures, unreverbed 'dry' sound; and a colourful amorphous blob in the middle, that reflects the flashes of great melody. And I thought that metaphor worked enough to write it down.

Curious that I’ve never come across this one before as it’s similar enough to what I was listening to around the time. While at the time I may have been more receptive, I found it pretty one-note and uninteresting with 2025 ears.

Great fun! Experimental bedroom psych-rock that evokes Eno and Devo (a bit) for me, but a little less serious. Interesting overnight sensation story. Enjoyable and innovative.

Nice sound. Got a bit boring though.

Never heard this band before, but I quite like the art rock sound they are creating here. I can hear some 60s psychedelic pop influences, especially in the vocal harmonies. It's quite simplistic, but fairly listenable.

Ya lo había escuchado antes, y la verdad que sigue siendo buen indie Mucha influencia tropical, a partir de ahí salen 2-3 joyitas que destacan Probablemente infravalorado en su época y aún ahora

some interesting some not

2,5 Ik was eerst niet overtuigd maar na beter te luisteren naar hun teksten vind ik Hail Bob wel echt tof; de verwijzingen naar de Halle-Bopp komeet en de The Heaven’s Gate cult zijn echt goed gemaakt, en het woordmopje is ook gewoon goed gevonden (Hail to the Bop- Halle-Bopp & Hail to the bebop (de muziekstijl van het nummer). Also Skies Over Caïro is ook een bop.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to! Great driving beats; "Psych Pop" is a great description of this album.

Electronic isn’t usually my thing, but this is worth another listen.

This is one of those boom stomp clap albums but if it was actually good

Impressive Brian Wilson stylings here, in case anyone was looking for a newer version of that.

No. 341/1001 Introduction 3/5 Hail Bop 3/5 Default 3/5 Firewater 3/5 Waveforms 3/5 Zumm Zumm 2/5 Hand of Man 3/5 Love's Dart 4/5 Wor 3/5 Storm 3/5 Life's a Beach 3/5 Skies over Cairo 2/5 Silver Rays 3/5 Average: 2,92 Their sonic style just wasn't really my thing. Still alright.

Seems like a smart album, didn't hit me immediately (already listened to it in the past), but think it would reward effort.

Panda Bear joins Beta Band? Sure! Pretty nice.

This is the first I've heard of Django Django and, honestly, it's a refreshing addition to this list. While it's absolutely a 60's throwback in many ways, this has the 2010's written all over it. The contemporary sounds and vocal styles won me over, but most of the record sounds the same, so my enthusiasm does have a ceiling. Not a new fan by any means, but this was delightful.

3 nice but nice is a three!

Competent and pleasant enough, but hardly all time worthy enough to be on this list. Not really electronic, mostly just hipster pop. "Firewater" had interesting Duane Eddy influences. "Waveforms" was a nice Beach Boys/Crosby Stills and Nash throwback vibe. "Zumm Zumm" Which 1980s video game soundtrack did that came from? "Love's Dart" Well now, I thought I was the only one that likes a bit of vibra-slap. Another undeserving British band included simply because the author is English.

This feels like a modern psychedelic band that is in the same vein as MGMT and Tame Impala. Genuinely surprised I’ve never heard of them before, but I’ve never really been able to get into this type of music, so I guess it’s not that surprising. Overall, this was a good album, I enjoyed listening to it, but I doubt I’ll return to it much, if ever.

- perfectly fine, entertaining, another one that makes me wonder exactly what the author of this project is thinking; I'm not sure I NEEDED to hear this one, glad i did but I'm not sure if it will stick .... -

liked the psychedelic vibes and energy on this record. a lot of the sounds on here were very pleasing to the ear. did feel that the lyrics were undeveloped though but overall liked this

A lot of the vocal melodies and harmonies are very reminiscent of the Beach Boys. It's very interesting and adventurous music, which I like when music doesn't feel totally safe. Though I can't say that it completely hits the mark for me.

Easy listen. Punchy music to put on if you can’t decide what you want to listen to but want a bit of up vibe. Got to Gatineau, got to Gatineau…

"Default" and "Zumm Zumm" were pretty good. It sounds like old alternative and that's nice.

i kinda dont really care

Listened to this a fair bit when it came out and enjoyed it. Some cool songs but runs out of ideas a bit I think.

I heard Beach Boys here in the harmonies and a little bit of klezmer by the end. Not entirely unenjoyable, but not entirely enjoyable either.

bon délire mais Moyen quand même

Strange but enjoyable

Meh… pretty repetitive with nothing standing out, not even the vocals. And not that interesting for my tastes. A few nice rhythms occasionally, but not my style of music.

I can imagine I would have adored this album if I listened to it in the era it came out, as an Alt-J obsessive. Still, really enjoyed it in the year of 2026

Pretty mid

I found a lot to like here. Fun discovery from this list.

Sounds like what would happen if Cut Copy, Trey Anastasio, and Devendra Banhart were trapped in a room together with only a guitar, a maraca, an ounce of weed, and a 2008 Macbook running Garage Band to get them by. While it is a little self-aware and pretentious for my taste, it’s not horrible and I appreciate the artistic effort.

The electronic force driving this to me is both attractive and off-putting. The mechanical sound is not open to melodic modulation. The sameness is good in small doses. Worth hearing, I guess, but I'll probably not check them out more.

Djingly Djangly Django Django. Nothing groundbreaking but I got djangy with it.

I enjoyed this. Shades of Animal Collective. I even got some Dandy Warhols vibes at times (mostly from their vocals). Not sure it's a must-listen, but I listened and liked.

Completely unfamiliar with this band and I really enjoyed. At times a little reminiscent of the Dandy Warhols.

It’s fun but feels too long and I’m probably not revisiting

jaunty!

Kind of the typical mid 2000's Indy band. Their visuals and the way they are hyped is better than the actual music. Mid tempo folk made with sampling. I guess.

so so. 3.00/5

I was excited to hear a nearly recent album! I liked it for the most part, it had elements of genres that I liked. It just didn’t jump out at me and it wasn’t memorable enough for me to rate it high

Pretty solid album.

Quite a fun, funky album with interesting harmonies but repetitive with no standout tracks.

I’ve been waiting here so long but you’re taking off again

Never heard of this band before. Pretty good. Fun sound.

Liked it enough - it was a fun mix of Beach Boys vocal harmonies and Talking Heads rhythms , but the whole was not greater than the sum. It fits in comfortably in that post-Animal Collective, FIFA soundtrack indie genre (shout out Foster The People - haven't thought of you in a while), but doesn't transcend that era. It was interesting revisiting that type of sound - made me feel oddly nostalgic for a simpler, pre-algorithm time. This feels like something I would have found on a Tumblr blog that would have definitely overhyped it. Stand out tracks to me were Firewater (loved the space cowboy vibes), Waveforms, and Life's a Beach. Leaned more towards their acoustic stuff.

I like the vibe - very Panda Bear, also cool rhythms and harmonies. I can see how a remix album of this would be cool The production was pretty incredible Standouts: Waveforms, Wor, Skies Over Cairo Again, it was cool and had some great tracks but didn’t really hit consistently for me

The amount of caffeine ive drunk to waveform in 2019 is insane. I liked that track and a few others especially, but overall kinda meh? Fun. Maybe i’d like it more after a relisten or three. Pratik is right that this is a flaw of the project. O well. Consensus w the group.. THREE!

Part of the 1001 albums online where a new album is generated every day. It's kind of not my jam at all. There's some decently groovy stuff, but overall it's a little to intricate and smart-sounding. Preppy. I don't know.

I wanted to give this album a four, but I just felt that a lot of the songs never quite went where I hoped they would go. They are very good beats and the production is great, I enjoy listening to every song, but I never quite saw the songwriting as compelling or the crescendo I wanted. As a result it was kind of flat. Enjoyable, though, and I will be exploring them more. Great for studying or working.

Quirky in a good way.

#743. This sounds like one part Beach Boys, and one part hipster rock. 3/5: acceptable.

I remember hearing this and downloading it when it came out, liking it, then never listening to it again. Just that kind of record. Love the rhythms and almost tribal drumming at times, the close harmonies, and the creative synths. They even throw in some surf rock guitar on "Lifes a Beach." But the songwriting isn't strong and much of it is forgettable.

Wanted to like this more than I did, and another review here nailed it - the band has no songwriter (or compelling vocalist). The instrumentals are cool, something different for sure, but the hooks are often dull, if there are any. Some of these meander too much and it takes me out of the song.

Quite catchy and enjoyable but also quite samey. As is becoming standard, the voice wasn’t as good as the music.

Not sure if it's just surpassing some very low expectations. Art rock sounds like a proper wanky pretentious concept. I actually didn't mind this though. 5/10.

A level of musical repetitiveness that you have to expect from a band who named themselves and their album using the same word 4 times. Didn't actually mind it though

This was interesting…kind of infectious pop, but also unique use of electronics. I liked it more than I thought I would at first, and then it slowly wore on me. Decent enough tunes but I didn’t like the vocals after a while…maybe some wannabe McCartney thing in there he can’t quite pull off? Some songs really sound like The Stone Roses, who I love..Idk, it’s easy enough to listen to while you work. Didn’t love, didn’t hate, didn’t finish

Unique hidden gem!

2012? 2012???? Practically a new release! I’m not saying I disliked it. I didn’t. There were some cold tracks I think would sound great popping up on a road trip set list. I just don’t see how an album like this could ever be someone’s personal favourite. Didn’t have enough wow. Solid mid.

A wide spectrum of exciting sounds, cool and experimental music underlined with relatively boring vocals.

I kinda lost patience to it at the end 3/5

Gets better as it goes on, bonus points for having a track on the transcendent Fifa 13 soundtrack, even if it's not one of the ones that makes it so good

I thought I was going to blow it off but it was weirdly fun. The vocals are such a strange direct quote from the beach boys, but I like them.

Not bad. Will listen again

cool grooves ruined by a lackluster vocal performance. it feels like hes being forced to sing; there is no heart in it.

Fun noises bouncing around. Full of odd percussion layers. The voices are too “plasticky”. It’s like a cool party where the host won’t stop talking over the decent music. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - Hail Bop - Default - Life’s a Beach

This was new to me and felt like a more accessible Animal Collective. I liked it and need to remember to revisit!

Best Track - "Default"

Rigtig velproduceret album! Ved ikke helt hvad den laver på listen dog

Weird, modern pyschadelic, not nearly as good as Tame Impala. Default is pretty fun.

This album was way better than I thought it would be.

This is the most contemporary album we've had in some time! I haven't listened to Django Django before. "Default" is a fun song. I was so into music and new bands in this time period, I'm not sure how I missed this song. This album was OK. Kind of boring besides a few bangers. Not sure how this album made it onto this playlist, of all of the albums to choose from in this time period. 6/10

This was alright, Kind of sounds like The Beta Band but bland. The Beta Bland.

Skies over Cairo and Default are the standout tracks. Not bad, but kind of feels like a watered down Animal Collective. It could commit to be being a little weirder and more fun. Very listenable but a lot blends together

Interesting listen

This album was like getting pegged for the first time, I’m not sure if I liked it or not.

6/10 I listened to this album a few times when it came out and have always enjoyed the vibe of it, but it never really had a great amount of staying power with me. Having gone through it again with fresh ears, I’ve got a better understanding of why. Aside from Default, which is a really solid track, there are rarely any really great payoffs for the vibe and structural build of the surrounding work. If they’d have managed to pull off four or five really hooky choruses across the tracks, they could really have delivered something special, because everything else here is great. The production is solid, there’s a really nice blend of instruments, some fantastic non-typical drum grooves mixed in with enough straight four stuff to maintain the momentum. The sound design is also solid and there’s loads of ear candy all over the place. But all too often it builds a great foundation and then doesn’t add anything particularly hooky or memorable on top of it, and that’s a massive shame. I enjoyed the vibe enough that I actually stayed pretty interested throughout, but I was just willing them on to deliver something banging to reward all of the promise. This feels like something of a halfway house between The Bees and Alt-J, in that it creates a similar vibe and has stylistic echoes of Alt-J (who’s debut actually came out a few months after this), but also suffers a little from the fatal flaw that The Bees had, which was that there was nothing memorable about their music at all. Not to say that this is anything like as bereft of engagement as that album was, but there was a touch too much of that, and not enough of the other. That being said, this is pretty good background music, so it may get a few more spins here and there. Introduction - Arpeggiated synth, whistling, vocal pads and atmospheric drums. I think we know where we’re going with this. Nice build to the first track though. Hail Bop - This has got a good vibe to it. Some nice chords in the vocal harmonies and there’s a bit of bounce to things from the synths and beat. There’s quite a lot of variety in the sound design which adds some nice depth too. A pretty solid start. Default - This track has always been the standout one on this album for me. It’s got a great pulse to the rhythm and there’s a really good balance between the synths and other instruments. It’s super hooky, but also just a bit weird too, which just catches me the right way. There’s some pretty cool production tricks and ear candy in play that just give it extra vibe. Firewater - This reminds me of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s ‘Spread Your Love’. Not tonally, but the composition. Anyway, this one’s a bit more plodding. It feels like it’s building a lot, but never really hits the payoff. The synths feel fairly extraneous from the rest of the track here too, which is a shame. Waveforms - This has got a nice shuffling rhythm to it. The vocals build nicely too. I really appreciate the depth to the sound design, as there’s a load of variety if you listen deeply and it does build quite a lot from start to finish. It’s a nice little listen, but it unfortunately never really lands on a particularly satisfying hook to pay off the build. Zumm Zumm - Again, a good groove to this, with some cool little bits of production. It feels like it’s working up to something again. Will it pay off? Doesn’t seem like it. It kind of has the slightly frantic feeling of being in a queue for the toilet while you’re absolutely desperate, only to get to the front of the queue to find it’s the door for the smoking area. Where’s the payoff gents? Hand Of Man - This is pretty stripped back. Some really nice interwoven guitar lines in there. It’s kind of a nice wash of sound, and there are some pretty pleasing harmonies. There’s not much variety to it, but the whole vibe of it is great and it’s a pleasant little listen. Love’s Dart - Slightly ruined by the fact that this (and another track on the album) are used as musical beds for a podcast I listen to. This is pretty nice. Some of the vocal harmonies remind me of something that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s got a nice vibe to it. The drums could be a little more varied, but it’s another nice wash of a listen. Wor - There’s a bit more of a payoff to things here. There’s quality build up, some really nice pace and rhythm to it. When some of the guitar and drum combos get moving, it’s quality stuff. It’s just good fun and there’s plenty of audio interest, as seems pretty standard with this production. Storm - More good build up. More interesting drumming. They often seem to eschew the more obvious beats for something with a bit more variety, which is nice. Unfortunately this one, again, feels a bit like it’s all verse and pre-chorus, but they forgot to write an actual chorus to go with it. Life’s a Beach - There’s an interesting vibe to this. Like surf-rock with a middle-eastern twist. Some nice harmonies, more good grooves, some solid synth work. The breakdown in the middle is pretty lush too. But again, they seem to be allergic to the big chorus that all of the good work is crying out for. Skies Over Cairo - And here’s the other half of that podcast bed I mentioned earlier. Again, great vibe, but it doesn’t really go anywhere that exciting. Silver Rays - More decent sound design and a darker vibe. This synth lines are a tiny bit too piercing in places for me, but when the track drops to the more sparse arrangements the vibe is good. There’s lots of movement across the different parts, so it’s an interesting listen, but again, not too much of a hook anywhere.

Some great tunes. Quite samey through the album though. I was convinced I'd already heard songs. Pleasantly reminiscent of Beck.

A quirky sort of indietronic album, it has variety, it keeps somewhat interesting though something about the overall sound gives me a bland waterishness preventing me from particularly liking it. Maybe there's too much focus in the midtones or something At least it's interesting, and even if it has a bit of a sleeper sound to it, it's not bad

so....Im not sure if this was intentional or not, but at 2:07 of "hand of man", there's an old-school Cellphone incoming call interference noise on the track. very subtle in the left channel. Given this came out in 2012, I bet this was a real call and wasn't picked up by the producer. Which is hilarious. I enjoyed the album overall, it's interesting. but good god does it DRAG on

2012 was a weird year for British music. It felt dominated by Mumford & Sons and Jake Bugg; a real wave of boring twangy guitar/folk rock had washed over us unknowingly. Django Django fall into the more creative end of that sound, but it’s still a little too twangy for me, just with some quite rudimentary chiptune elements thrown in. There’s some good moments in this, but I feel there’s a reason this band made no impression on me initially; it’s all a little bland and calculated for my tastes.

++: Hail Bop, Default, Firewater, WOR, Life's a Beach, Skies Over Cairo, Silver Rays +: Zumm Zumm, Love's Dart +-: Introduction, Waveforms, Hand of Man, Storm 7,6/10

i enjoyed this, was different, good listen, default was good

second listen to this album and it does grow on you. nice harmonies will need to have a look at the back catalogue

like it!

Sneakily fun. No bangers but something to sneak in when you need a little something different.

There I was a-sittin’ in my sky chair subtly stomping my foot and shookin’ my butt to this, thinking — okay, strong start. But by track 5 I was exhausted. Didn’t really connect with any of the songs and there were a lot of horse at an Arabian laser rodeo sounds? Likeeee ohhh another devil western baseline thing, we’re runnin’ through a valley… but there’s no water, and I want to go home

Great textures (especially in the percussion) and a lot of cool ideas about marrying inorganic and organic musical sounds. The lead vocal performances are a little bloodless, but the rhythms and production choices are engaging. Experimental and sometimes pretty Beatles-y. Some of the songs wear out their welcome (“Zumm Zumm” was difficult for me) and as a whole I think this album would benefit from concision, even if it was just by five minutes.

Good album, feels very spacey

Trippy

This album was pretty solid. It’s got a light and warm psychedelic 60s vibe several solid tracks but a little more average for the rest of the tracks

I liked these guys

This is alright - some decent indie psychedelic.

Якось не слухав цей гурт, а втім, альбом хороший. Місцями неочікувані ходи є. За звук сирени мінус звісно. Послухаю ще.

Liked this album a lot when it came out. I thought this band was destined for big things but they ended up doing nothing else memorable

Solid electronic rock stuff, some really cool synths are here and it's fairly enjoyable

I can’t claim to like Talking Heads and then not say I like this. It’s pretty good, one of the better picks from the 2010s on this list for sure. It’s not brilliant, but it’s fine.

Decent and listenable. My favorite was “Skies Over Cairo”

Interesting listen, I enjoyed it. Reminds me a bit of Beta Band if they had recently licked a toad.

Chill album good for studying or productivity.

sounds like a desert rock Yellow Magic Orchestra for alot of these tracks, especially the first 2. it loses it's momentum after Default and every following track feels hit or miss. eh

Quite nice. Sixties-style harmonies with electronic sounds and mindedness production that sometimes sounds like children’s TV themes. It was a bit bland and samey though and overstayed its welcome. By the end of the album I was relived to turn it off.

Decent alt art rock from that period….

Wasn't terrible, easy enough to listen to. I liked Firewater, life's a beach. some of it is just too weird tho.

A very strange but entertaining album with a highly original sound. I was in the right mood for it.

3/5. The instrumentation is definitely the highlight here. The lyrics feels more like a formality like it was an afterthought. It adds a nice balance to the more fast paced backdrop by slowing it down with more melodic vocals but I have no clue what these songs are about. Viewing it as purely instrumental, including the vocals, I think this album was a pretty chill listen. Not groundbreaking but was fun. Best Song: Default, Life's A Beach, Hail Bop

Actually solid

Good album. I was pleasantly surprised that it was very listenable. I feared the worst when the album summary called this art rock.

Standard 2010s indie album.

189/1089 - It's alright.

British art rock

Interesting. Differen

I felt like they had potential, but nothing really stuck out to me.

7/10 Best song: Storm, Life’s A Beach Least good: Skies Over Cairo

Sort of a sub-par copy of ‘Here Come The Warm Jets’ era Brian Eno. Interesting on occasion but mostly not (unlike Eno).

I've never heard of them before but somehow I like it. Sounds very much like recorded as a soundtrack for several videogames. With some more runs I possibly would get used to it even more. Strong three stars for this one. 3,5

I didn't love it, but it was enjoyable enough and pretty mellow. Not bad.

It was an alright listen, I'd heard a song before (Default) and I'd rate the album overall the same as my thoughts when I first heard that song - listenable and pleasant, but nothing mindblowing.

i didn’t dislike it. There’s talent and it’s very mercury music award. I was working and finding myself gritting my teeth and getting progressively more annoyed and then I realised it was Zumm Zumm.

Was expecting to not like this album after listening to the first song but I was mistaken. It’s not bad. It’s ok. It’s likable.

Favoritas: Hail Bop, Default, Waveforms Menos favorita: Zumm Zumm #DAY 4: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die I was completely unaware of the existence of this band and their music, but that’s exactly why I’m doing this “challenge” — to discover new things… Although honestly, this album hasn’t sparked much interest in me. The psychedelic western-style atmosphere is quite charming, but I feel like it’s the only appealing aspect of the album, as most of the songs here seem forgettable to me. The first half is definitely stronger — Hail Bop is a track that makes great use of the atmosphere, and the final part of Waveforms has a great rhythm. Other than that, Wor had the potential to be a quality song, but for me the biggest problem with the album is that the vocals generally don’t stand out at all — in fact, sometimes they even sound outright bad, like in Storm or Zumm Zumm, which end up being obnoxious. Fun overall, but I’m not looking forward to listening to it again, especially the tracks in the middle… Favorites: Hail Bop, Default, Waveforms Least favorite: Zumm Zumm

Svak 3’er. Foretrekker heller Kings of Convience. Synes de har bedre melodier og er bedre på å synge slike harmonier.

Favorite songs: Wor, Default, Firewater Least favorite songs: Hand of Man 3/5

interesting. great!

'Default' - great track.

Enjoyable, different

thought this was a reinhart one at first and got proven very wrong. genuine question guys.. why do these mid rock bands from the 2000s-2010s somehow end up w spots on this list?

it's nice, but i'm not excited about it

Fair enough, this is decent music for 2012. I forgot about the song Default, so it's cool to hear it again

I almost assembled a small cabinet listening to this. It didn't disturb, and I could concentrate. Very good!

"Django Django" is the debut album by British art rock band Django Django. The Wiki-listed genres are art rock, neo-psychedelia, electronic rock and experimental pop. Yeah, I'll buy those. The bandmembers included Vincent Neff (lead vocals, guitar), Jim Nixon (bass, backing vocals, keyboards), Tommy Grace (keyboards, backing vocals, drum programming, samples) and Dave Mclean (drums, percussion, drum programming). The album had solid reviews and was nominated for the 2012 UK Mercury Prize. It also reached #33 on the UK charts. After an introduction song, the album fully kicks in with "Hail Bop." Synth ticking, background beats, handclaps and layered vocals. More in the pop realm here. I believe it's song about a love that shone brightly but is gone and using the 1997 Haley-Bopp comet and Heaven's Gate Cult who committed mass suicide as a poetic metaphor. Kind of clever. "Default" begins with echoing robotic vocals and a bouncy synth and beat. More percussion beats, a tambourine and guitar slashes. It's never a bad idea to sound like Devo. He's a cog in the wheel and keeps repeating himself (In a relationship? At work?). Catchy song and it got decent airplay in the States too. "Lover's Dart" keeps the music interesting with quick, electronic percussion, a rolling bass and rattles. Nice harmonies and a galloping beat develops. He's lost in a dust bowl and his dart is no longer sharp. "Storm" reminded me of early 90's Depeche Mode with a stomping beat and guitar. Layered and echoing vocals. You're my little storm. The album closes with a nice one in "Silver Rays." Hypnotic pounding drums. Various noises such as whistles, rattles and bird noises. The vocals are fast, dreamy and psychedelic. Drugs, love and dance. This music is constant beats whether electronic and/or polyrhythmic mixed with dreamy and psychedelic vocals and guitars. I fully see the Pitchfork description of them as a fusion of the synthetic and the natural. I also do hear the Beta Band, Devo and Depeche Mode in their music as well. I question an inclusion of this album in the 1,001 but, overall, it's a decent album. Not every song worked for me but most did.

If I was out of my brain at a music festival this would be fine. Did I need to listen to it before I die? No. Layering looping sound effects with mostly shit lyrics. Wor is the standout. This is another more recent release where I can see multiple other albums released in 2012 taking its place. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

pretty weird. musically all over the place and it only worked some of the time

It was an interesting listen, but probably not worthy of being on this list. 3 stars.

I listened to all of it. Short poppy songs. It didn’t really make an impact on me. Reminded me of Paul Simon?

This was fine, fun, and inoffensive. Not inspiring, but the production was solid and the heart was there. Not much range. Great writing. Not very high highs and not very low lows. 3/5

Weird and wild stuff

A resounding "Meh"

It was good. It just seemed to never end ...

Very pleasant album.

It was fairly enjoyable but a crazy choice for the list. They must’ve just picked whatever was on the radio that day

First listen

Fine, but not good enough on its own merits to be here, and completely unspecial for 2012, so..... why? Oh, UK. Got it.

Lots of potential. Interesting soundscape, good production, good mix of rock and electronic but a few songs got very repetitive and tedious.

5.5/10. Ok album, but not one that I'll remember or think about in the future.

Indie/alternative rock. This started strong but then it got a little less rock for me. I liked it but not loved it.

A good album, I still prefer Glowing in the Dark, but this is still good.

Huh, this was quite fun. Fave tracks: Hail Bop, Waveforms, Love's Dart. Would I revisit: yes probably.

This hit harder than it had any right to. Not even sure how to describe it but mellow and vibey all at the same time, but I may have found a new focus album. Nothing really stood out, so a 3, but may regret later if it does actually help me focus.

These are catchy and easy to listen to, but it does it to a fault where it's forgettable. I enjoyed listening but it was more of a general mood vs enjoyment. There's a 10/10 talent in parts of this that needs to partner up with someone, but I'm not sure who. I enjoyed listening but I don't know if this mandatory. It's doing something good but not in a way I feel I'd miss out on if I didn't listen again. I'm fighting between a strong 3 and weak 4. If it was tighter it would get the 4.

Nice opening, grabbed me. Okay a 2012 take on music of the 1960s. Some Beach Boys and or Simon and Garfunkel with some very 2012 beats. I don't dislike what they are doing but this album is way too long and some of it gets a little formulaic sounding. The song writing is kind of lacking, they found a trick to make catchy songs and milked it.

Not bad

To my shock I actually liked this… I thought it was different again and I was vibing out to it. It was really good.

Charitably (or just very loosely) could call it a weird mix of 1960s folkie melodies with that early 21st century modern reverb-y Fleet Foxes *sound* and sprinkle in a bit of electronica but still keeping it all sparse enough to keep some mystery. Which sounds like it should be awesome. I liked it .... but really wanted to like it a lot more. Everything sounded nice but never truly grabbed me either. I don't know, maybe it's a (very) slow builder but could have used a few more uptempo songs for variety. Honestly in the end it's cool to pick (any) ~3 songs, get a nice chill feel, and move on. Also "Zumm Zumm" is annoying. 5/10 3 stars

This was an interesting album. I think it would be good background music for a dinner party.

This is an odd one. There's nothing wrong with the album – a slightly more commercial Vampire Weekend, perhaps? but making a list of classic albums...I don't think even their mums would sat this. (as an aside, the Mercury Music Prize is quite the graveyard, isn't it?)

I can vibe with it. Some songs are amazing

This was a new one for me - liked the sound! Go Synth Pop! 3/5 #musicsky #albumsky

Very pleasant listen
