pretty good
chill vibes cinematic slow drive type
I enjoyed it
Super lovely and really cool in parts
listened to this once when it first came out and wasn't that impressed. Now, years later, I enjoy it much more. solid 3.7
Life in the suburbs is bleak. This whole thing kinda runs together for me ... no real song that I particularly care about more on the record. Maybe I just need to listen to it more. Was never a huge Arcade Fire fan, as in dying to go see them live (I've heard they're good), but I do enjoy their records ... especially the synth stuff. Feels like the Less than Zero 80s or something ... a soundtrack for a Brett Easton Ellis movie.
Nice album
Just some good ol' Indie with electronic elements.
I’m vacillating between giving this a 3 or 4, and I think I’ve ended up on a 4, but a very strange 4. I don’t think I paid that much attention to the lyrics on this album, which is kinda crazy, given that it’s so lyrically dense. I also wasn’t feeling the album at first at all; I thought there wasn’t really a specific genre, I didn’t get a sense of variety, and perhaps worst of all, I didn’t get a sense of direction for the album. I don’t know when it clicked for me exactly, but I think at about the halfway point of the album, I just threw out the lyrics entirely, focused on the general mood of the songs, and I tried to catch what I could. That mood is what’s carrying the album to a 4 for me. Before I threw out the lyrics, I didn’t think there was necessarily a bad song, but I didn’t think there were any standouts either; once I kind of let the “analyst” side of me go away for this album, I just felt a deep, deep nostalgia for oddly, the late 2000s & early 2010s. For an album made in 2010, talking about nostalgia, it seems clear enough to me that they’re longing for the pre-9/11 vibes of innocence, hope, safety, and just a general brightness to everything. In 2024, to listen to this after the social media era, the Trump years, the COVID pandemic, the BLM movement… it just makes me feel nostalgic for the now underrated brightness of what I can now officially call my youth, as all of that shit just weighs down upon me like an anchor I’m not sure I can drag off of me. I need to give this album another listen or two to decide what the really good tracks are as opposed to just feeling the vibes, but I know this; I’m definitely listening to it in a car next time. This album feels like it was desperately designed for a car ride. Regardless, I feel good with a 4.
This stayed in the car stereo for a good while years ago, and the more I listen to this, the more I enjoy it. It's varied with good drive and sweeping anthems but also feels subdued because of the production. It's weird. Also, surprisingly emotional and I enjoyed the heavy Blondie inspired material more this time around. I do wonder if it feels bloated by the weight of its own ambition?
Great indie rock album! Just a bit to long for my taste. Would be even better at around 50 minutes. 4/5
Classic. I have always been a passive fan of Arcade Fire. This album flows so well. Reminds me of high school. Old Favorites: The Suburbs Ready to Start New Favorites: Month of May (This song had me tapping my feet while I wrote emails!)
Great album! Very fun and vibey. Both singers have great voices. Favorite song: Sprawl 2 9/10
This album started slow for me but really picked up steam a few tracks in. The band did a very good job of creating distinct and unique songs that still fed into each other and collectively came together into a cohesive project. And it’s obviously real easy listening. Well done, indeed. Fave songs: Empty Room Half Lift I Suburban War Month of May
Really great album
Well if I had to give this a number, I think 3.5 would be the most honest rating, but since it Friday and I got today off, let’s say 4 since I’m in a good mood. Arcade Fire should feel honored. Anyways, this album blends in with a lot of indie rock from this era. It had some cool tracks, along with tracks that were pretty mediocre. It’s nothing I’ll ever go back to in the future, but I also don’t regret listening to it this one time.
Pretty good, but definitely not The Wall, which seems to be a bit of what they are reaching for. Top to bottom, it's strong and unified in terms of mood, which is controlled, and strums along pleasantly enough without having any truly standout tracks. "Sprawl II" is perhaps the catchiest, but it seems something of an outlier. Overall, one can't take AF as seriously as they seem to wish one to, but this is solid.
A moody album that feels like it is one or two songs too long. Still, for an unknown reason, I like the mood and commentary of isolation and emptiness of The Suburbs...
Excited for this one, I like some arcade fire songs but never dug into their albums (a common theme in this exercise). Wall of sound. Enjoyable, but it does get a bit weaker after the first couple of tracks. 4*. I would typically give albums like this a 3*, but I'm too biased toward early 10s alternative. Highlights: the suburbs, ready to start
Comples sounds with a dense almost tense vibe. 4 stars
Solid 4. grammy 2011 album of the year. It's really good, still enjoy it. 'City with No Children' and 'Sprawl II' have been in my rotation since it came out - great songs.
Sonido ochentoso. Me hizo acordar a The Midnight pero mas rockero.
Oh Canada! A little long, but interesting. I enjoyed this, will listen again.
Exceptional album. Sprawl 2 is a grewat track and 1 on my playlists
Really good album.
Banger.
strung out hipster cowboy music
Hated this album when it first came out. Loved it when I just listened to it. What does that tell you? 4.3
so beautiful and well produced
Wasted Hours blew my mind. Great Album
Arcade Fire always has something interesting on their records. Although I feel like their vocals are sometimes off putting, my general reception is really positive. They have few low-key hits on every album, this included, that I have never heard of before. I believe it is time to listen to their full discography, because so far it's been a great time spent listening to albums from this list. 4 for now, very possible future 5.
Classic.
Pretty fun album. Had some interesting songs.
2024-03-03...
I started listening to this at 10something because I needed something to keep me awake until midnight because I haven't done my homework. It kept me awake but I ended up on Facebook. who even uses Facebook. the music was p good tho. 8/10
Enjoyable 7.5/10
I liked the way the songs sounded good, none were amazing but they were all solid 8/10
Funeral was a masterpiece, Neon Bible was a letdown so I gave up on them. This album is better and more like Funeral even though it's longer and doesn't seem to flow as well. Would listen to again. Also, Regine's voice is amazing, she should sing more.
Beautiful, existentially heavy tracks. I wish there were more variations in sound, but the atmosphere they create on this album is flawless.
Solid listen this
I really liked the album opener and I thought the album itself was good but not great. Arcade fire used to be one of those bands I thought were overrated as fuck but I think I can comfortably give this over indulgent album a 4. Also on a kinda related note isn’t the singer a massive creep or something???
What I've been told is the last great Arcade Fire album. Its not as good as the debut in my opinion but still worth the listen. TOo long
I don’t know how, but about half of this album sounds familiar to me, even though I have almost never listened to this band. Overall, it’s pretty good. Solid altpop. Nice transitions and range. Well produced. Can’t complain.
The first two songs may be the best on the album. There are hits later in as well, but the album does drag a bit here and there. Regardless, it was an enjoyable listen and I will probably play it again.
Love Arcade Fire, this one doesn't quite grip me the same way as Funeral but still really enjoy it.
fajne 4/5
the transition into “city with no children” was fire. arcade fire.
a Great album, it's going on the rotation
Arcade Fire are one of those bands that I've been meaning to get into for ages, but just never got round to them. And wow am I glad that I have finally had a reason to listen to them, because this album really goes hard. The vocals are just emotive enought to make me emotional, but not so much that they feel cringey. I love the diversity in instruments here too. Nothing ever feels like it's too much, and all sorts of instruments are used in ways that feel so natural and blend seemlessly into the album. I really want to give this album a 5/5, but looking through the other albums I have rated a 5, I just feel like it doesn't quite fit. I can't find any specific things to criticize, but I know that there are maybe just a few corners to polish off for this album to be a 5 for me.
Win Butler is a bad person! Ok, with that out of the way… As is typically the case with hour-plus length albums, there is some material here that should have been cut. The entire middle portion of this album is pretty bleh. However, this album starts and finishes incredibly strong, with the first three and last four songs really sticking in my head after finishing. The band absolutely nails the mood that it’s going for, as this album drips front to back with a feeling of claustrophobic anxiety and dissatisfaction. And while I’m not well-versed enough in the music of the time to know how groundbreaking their sound was, I picked up on a lot of things that would later be expanded on by 2010s indie rock acts like Awolnation. (This has the knock-on effect of making this album sound quite dated.) Overall, a very good work that needed trimming to be truly great. 4 stars.
The Suburbs have a distinctly Arcade Fire feel to it, from their third album release, they have really settled into their groove. Sitting firmly within the indie rock sphere, their use of strings and piano bring a timeless feel that is distinctly Arcade Fire, not sure how else to describe it. Best: The Suburbs Worst: City With No Children
Very good
The Suburbs was in 2010 mijn eerste kennismaking met Arcade Fire, We Used To Wait. The Suburbs Modern Man We Used to Wait Sprawl II
The Suburbs' was one of my favourite tracks of 2010. The rest of the album is great too. A melancholy tinged beauty runs through the whole thing. A low 4.
schöner entspannter gitarrensound
2010 me would have had this on constant rotation.
Enjoyable, slightly evocative of Mumford and Sons but nice to listen to
One of my favourites, Got me into Arcade Fire.
This is a good album in a style that I'm not entirely fond of. Broadly, the songs are competently written, and the lyrics are interesting, but this album also sounds shockingly underwhelmingly mixed for a 2010 album. If the mixing wasn't so flat on some of these songs, then I would be inclined to give this up to 10 more points, but as it stands, I can't give this more than an 80.
The Suburbs, Ready To Start, Deep Blue) wollen die Songs einfach nicht in meinem Gedächtnis kleben bleiben. Eigentlich will man raus da, die Welt entdecken.
Loys of good stuff here. Could be a 5 star review but some of this seems repetitive. I remember when this came out there was a link where you could put in your home address and then The Suburbs music video would play with Google Earth picture (and video?) of your house would be incorporated into the music video.
Their second-best album, one of my favorite albums, a modern classic. The only question is 4 (it does drag a little in the middle) or 5 (sprawl ii though…) stars. I think we’re going 4: as strong as the opening third and final third are, I think the middle third is mostly meh. First four songs + month of may + final four songs = perfect, unassailable, 36-minute record.
It took me a long time to warm up to this album. I loved Funeral on first listen, and Neon Bible probably after 2-3 listens, but it took me probably until after the release of Reflektor to find myself enjoying most of this. Even though it’s probably Arcade Fire's second-most celebrated album, it’s probably my least favorite through Reflektor. It’s definitely less consistent than most of their other albums, the highs are high but there’s a lot of filler, I can’t stand “Rococo” or “Month of May”, and even right after listening again, there’s some more forgettable songs. I think if a few songs were cut and a few were rearranged to make this into a ~45 minute album, it would be more on par with Neon Bible in my mind as one of Arcade Fire’s greatest. Now, after having mostly criticized this album until now, I do still love this album. At one point it was in my top 100, and the two-part songs (“Half Light” I & II, “Sprawl” I & II, and to some extent “The Suburbs”) are highlights and some of the best tracks of Arcade Fire’s career. I know they started the multi-part songs on Funeral, but I still think that’s one of the more successful things they’ve done over their career, continuing into some of their best work on Reflektor and We.
I am such a radio girl...once again I like Arcade Fire's songs I've heard, but never listened to a whole album. Melodic, a little dreamy with a hard edge. Nice overall
Still does it for me
Nostalgie!
Huge start! Five stars! Then dot dot dot big finish! I can't tell you what happened in the middle there.
There were a few misses for me, but this was surprisingly good for a band I had listened to a hand full of times in the past and wrote off as one I didn't like. The album is definitely making me take a second look at Arcade Fire.
A Great Album.. like it a lot!
I hadn't listened to this all the way through before, love The Suburbs and found Ready To Start alright but never made it much further each time I tried to listen to it. This time I did listen all the way through and there are some great songs on here - Rococo, Empty Room, Wasted Hours. Just dragged on a bit for me
A bit too downbeat, but that one big track (Sprawl II) is very good
Great album. Deserves a spot on the wall 8/10
Indie gold.
Really liked it. At one point I did feel like it was a bit long but maybe that’s because the past albums I’ve been getting on here have been shorter. Favorite: Empty Room
Arcade Fire is a band I had heard of but completely missed, it's been years hearing this album in particular is supposed to be an opus but I had stopped listening to new music. I was surprised that I recognized "Sprawl II (Mountains)", have heard it for years without knowing the band or name of the song. Real standout on the album for me. Overall I thought this was incredibly well-crafted, moody album, and that it wasn't for me. I think at a different time in my life, probably an adolescent in the suburbs, it would have spoken to me more. I appreciate the repeated themes, the weaving of similar lyrics throughout connecting many songs together. Not great for hyping up cardio tho. Would give a 4.25
'we used to wait' hits differently in your 30s.
Opens really strong with the first song. Never quite reaches the same peak again imo but it's still all good throughout. Will I listen to again: 80%
Like this music. It is upbeat and pleasant to the listening ear. Has a nice beat one can dance to.
8.5/10 the suburbs is an introspective view into the american dream as a whole. the feelings on this subject meander, sometimes you feel trapped and want to escape, but you can’t help but acknowledge that this is the place you learnt to drive, you grew up in and formed many childhood memories here. tracks range from showing pessimism about the state the suburbs will leave you in, dreamless and in a mundane point in life (modern man) to anarchy, wanting to reform and change where you live (month of may) but ultimately realising that this is the place that shaped you into the man you are today (wasted hours). the three dimensional approach this album takes towards living in the suburbs is what made me appreciate it so much, in my opinion it takes a certain level of maturity to see the good in something you hate. the lyrics on here do a good job in illustrating the town present in this album. it’s as if you live there yourself, experiencing what the narrator was going through himself. i enjoyed the vivid imagery displayed on the album’s run, nothing short of amazing! i think my only problem is the vocals, at times it gets really annoying and falls flat, void of emotion. also some tracks just feel incomplete, like they’re missing something?? then some of them are stupid like rococo??? yeah what the fuck was that, don’t attempt that stupid shit again. then there’s the runtime… i found myself feeling as if i was being forced to listen to this towards the end of the album. i feel like it shouldn’t have been as long as it was. but oh well.
Going to quote some other reviewers here, because I think they got it spot on. From Emily Mackay (NME) - “an album that combines mass accessibility with much greater ambition. Pretty much perfect, in other words – and despite their best efforts, listening to it feels just like coming home." From Alastair McKay (Uncut) - "[it] explores the badlands between safety and boredom. It's nostalgic, with a sense of future dread. There is pain and pleasure, loss and hope. It feels like the anesthetic is wearing off." While I don’t think it’s “perfect”, I do think it’s one of their strongest albums, maybe 2nd best after Funeral, and it’s one that gets better every time I listen to it and deserving of the accolades it garnered.
Another good one from Arcade Fire, though not quite as good as Funeral.
nice
now THIS is an indie vibe that's considerably better than yesterday's listen. emotion-filled tracks with moving guitar strumming, natural acoustic drums, occasional orchestral samples and lyrics filled with a great amount of sentimental value and overall warm, although sometimes sad look back at a past time. if this album wasn't an album, it would be a long, yet pleasant drive across the north, ending the journey at your grandma's old trailer home.
This album has, and will continue to age well. I’m a fan of their other album, Farewell, and am happy to hear their other works being as good. 3.8
If the album stopped at 2/3 the way through this might have been 5 stars but it just goes on for too long. I'll definitely give this another listen though because I feel it could grow on me. Highlights: The Suburbs Ready to Start Modern Man Suburban War
Wouldn't call myself an arcade fire fan, but I've listened to "funeral" before and enjoyed it. Really enjoyed this too as a whole, I agree with Graeme that it's too long. Lot of the middle of the album kinda blends together. Did find it all a bit fluffy, but maybe that's intentional, with the suburbs theme. If so, it's above me, although I have just picked it out, so perhaps not! 4.5
Solid album - almost my cup of tea, but I can't quite explain why I can't fully get into this album.
I'd never listened to this before, but really enjoyed it
Feels like every indie album since owes itself to this in a lot of ways
This is awesome. Really solid and eclectic tunes. Favourite tracks: The Suburbs, Ready to Start, Rococo, Empty Room, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).
It was definitely my type of music! Lots of fun, however I didn't love it. Great, but not superb.
Love arcade fire and this album. Some tracks aren't the best but overall it's pretty great.
This is my second Arcade Fire album. They are to American alternative rock as British comedy is to American comedy. It's quality alternative rock but it's kind of dry. Everything feels sort of flat which makes it hard to get all too excited about it.
It's good but don't get the hype
This was added to my library. Don’t know how this never made it on to my radar? I loved it. Favorite song: Ready to Start Least favorite: Rococo
Listen, I just like Arcade Fire.
This was never my favourite Arcade Fire album and I'm not entirely sure why. A lot of the tracks are great and Sprawl II in particular has to be a career highlight.
It was an enjoyable and satisfying album. Nothing special, but I was happy not to get another punk album.
One of those bands I should know better, but never give the time of day to. I feel like later 2000s indie for me is a blur of Killers, Strokes, Arctic Monekys, Tame Impala, these guys, plus many more, and I haven't yet separated it all out in my mind. Will definitely give these more of a run around. Some lovely tunes on here.
Having never heard these guys, I’m glad I started this 1001 journey. Another solid from this band. They are quite good
Solid. Knew the hits. Never listened to the whole album
Got some bops
Pretty good but feels kind of homogeneous - I get bored after a while

First time through, so I can’t say for certain how I feel about this yet. I can say that I’d give this another listen in the near future. That’s pretty good for me.
Great album. Especially when driving through the mountains!
so solid. sophisticated songwriting that pulls you in and in
Nice, chill, indiepop/rock. Relaxing and mellow
4/5 Some nice dreamy rock. Must check their discography.
Gives me big big highschool Casa days vibes
Indie-pop-rock album that discuss the topic of growing up in suburbs into the very depth of it. Production and music is amazing and its accompanied with lyrics that makes you stop and rethink your potential experiences of moving away from place you used to grow and and what kind of person you might have become.
It's all very good, but an hour of it is too much.
Easy on the ears, Foals vibes, vocals are getting lost - questionable mixing? Good background music, can enjoy without focusing on it
Damn, another AF purchase I need to make! Great album! 4/5
Enjoyed it! Bit repetitive and long though
Haven't listened to this album for about a decade but it holds up well
Good album but 3 or 4 songs too long. Win Butler also hogs the vocals when the female vocalist (not sure of her name) is far better.
Atmospheric, symphonic, strangely interesting
Très sympa, bonne découverte
Solid, but not as spectacular as their debut.
Some Matt Pond PA vibes - would listen again.
I love Funeral more, but this holds up for me. Their most grown up record (though I hadn't noticed before how much he talks about 'the kids'), with some beautiful moments, but not their greatest.
Yeah, me. I’m from the suburbs. Good indie.
If Brandon Donlon was an album. the suburbs
Fantastic from start to finish.
Solid album no skips
About the same as the other Arcade Fire we've had imo. Never as good as I want it to be, but never as bad as I make it out to be. 7/10
Solid. Middle drags, but it's strong and cohesive.
I liked this more than I remember liking it when it came out. Pretty good album.
Like it, but I like Funeral better
This was pretty good and pretty fun. I don't think I've ever heard Arcade Fire before. Bonus point because this felt like an album rather than a bunch of songs tossed together.
Peaceful
Second Arcade Fire on this list, and I was ready to be somewhat bored, but this album's pretty great. Lots of solid tracks, and I really enjoy the alternating lead vocals (even though I think most of the songs I liked were Win Butler). More bangers than I was expecting, I'm totally on board with this inclusion. Favorite tracks: City with No Children, Half Light II, Suburban War, The Suburbs (Continued), Rococo. Album art: I've seen this one many times, it's a washed out picture of a car parked next to a house. Kind of funny to me that this looks like California due to the palm tree, which I would never associate with "the suburbs." But it's a pretty solid cover. 4/5
The album has a good vibe. The band has a distinctive sound with some new wave influence in there. Good music for chilling at a bonfire or taking a road trip. Favorite tracks: The Suburbs Ready to Start Modern man Empty Room Half Light II Suburban War Month of May We Used to Wait Sprawl II
Standouts: The Suburbs, Month of May, Ready to Start, We Used To Wait, Sprawl I Others: Wasted Hours, Modern Man, Rococo, Empty Room, City With No Children, Half Light I, Half Light II, Sprawl II,
Better than Neon Bible.
Blended into my day nicely.
Great album.
Someone should tell Win Butler this album sounds neither like Neil Young nor like Depeche Mode. Not even a little. But it's really excellent, probably one of the best albums of the last 20 years. A melodic and bittersweet masterpiece of its time with a nuanced, cohesive sound and low key undercurrent of angst. Would have improved by dropping 2 or 3 tracks. Fave Songs: Modern Man, Wasted Hours, Deep Blue, The Suburbs, Half Light I, Half Light II (No Celebration), Ready to Start
I always seem to say the same thing about Arcade Fire. When I’m listening to them, I love them. And then time and memory turn them into vapour. I wish I had more time to really listen. I had this on in the background yesterday but I was so busy it just filtered through as something that was great to listen to but I couldn’t really concentrate. Until Month of May came on and that had me energised. One day, I’ll have enough time to appreciate them even more. Or maybe not…
I’m not sure if this album is better than the other two arcade fire albums we’ve had, or I am just being worn down by the cumulative exposure.
OK... so three Arcade Fire albums in and another 4-star rating. These guys are going to win the "best band I'm not 100% sold on" award. Individually, I was equally impressed and held at arm's length with each record. I went back twice to try to really dig into Funeral after we reviewed and found it wasn't the right vibe for the moment. So ... did I LIKE it or just admire and recognize that there's something special going on? Dunno. I just revisited my review of Neon Bible, and it was very much the same. Took me a while to get into... wasn't entirely sure what I thought by the end. So this is another 4, though I wasn't sure I was exactly a fan. I guess I'll listen at another time and see whether it sticks.
End to end, emotional, touching, staring at the sky, a touch of existentialism, an amazing ride
I didn't expect two Arcade Fire albums on this list. A pleasant, triumphant sounding album. I enjoy the seamless transition from one song to the next. I like the electronic/strings mix in Half Light II, feels very much like an Arcade Fire song. There is a lot of variety in this album. When Sprawl II came on, I thought the album had ended and went to a random artist. I was tuning in and out on this album, but I think it certainly deserves another listen. It had a distinct sound to it, and I didn't recognize any songs on it.
Great indie album! This band took a while for me to get into. But now I love most of their albums! Not sure if Funeral or this one takes the crown 8 out of 10
8/16, 50%
Pretty alright, some beautiful instrumentals and a nice , loosely cohesive theme
Their most consistent album, centered on themes of growing up in the suburbs and looking back on it. Just as atmospheric, catchy, and emotionally powered as their previous album with the use of baroque strings and synths, but not as strong or beautiful as Funeral. Still very much based on the garage revival formula with some very punky songs and basic beats. Super strong start. Lots of weak songs, especially in the middle. Could have been cut down by a third. Favorites: The Suburbs, Modern Man, Rococo, Suburban War, Deep Blue, Sprawl II
great album. brings back memories of smoking weed for the first time. a bit long and i don’t think it needed to be. great album with a few whatever songs.
Too bad he’s a creep.
DALE BOOOOOO 8.5/10
That was quite a ride. Some really nice tunes with uplifting changes. Really liked some of it. Some other bits felt a bit generic. I’m going I be generous and give it a 4. It feels like Christmas. It’s no. It’s August.
Probably my 2nd favorite Arcade Fire album behind Funeral.
One could see the paradigm shift the moment Arcade Fire had their moment in the spotlight upon the bestowing of music's highest honor in early 2011, thus marking the end of a golden age in blog-era indie rock and the end of Arcade Fire as a bubbling niche concern and it all starts in The Suburbs. The high point of the band's brand of epicly cinematic styling, The Suburbs weaves an exquisite tale that is apparent yet could very well fly over most listeners heads upon first glance. But the exuberance, the energy and the wholehearted commitment to grandiosity more than accentuate the subjects at hand and Arcade Fire were perhaps the very best of the mid-to-late 2000s rock groups in regards to that whole shtick. With or without Recording Academy recognition and the excess change that followed the group for the next decade or so afterwards (to an incredibly disappointing degree), The Suburbs will be seen as the band's greatest moment and a high level to which they may never obtain again. Favorites: The Suburbs, Ready to Start, Modern Man, Half Light I, Half Light II (No Celebration), Wasted Hours, We Used to Wait, Sprawl I (Flatland), Sprawl II (Mountains Upon Mountains).
listened to again boring at times, lovely at times, overall a solid album
A pretty chill and pleasant indie album with some real emotion. The instrumentation was wonderful too. However it did kinda catch me on a day where I was looking for more energy (even though Month Of May did switch it up in that department), but I may go back and give it another listen sometime. Favourite: Month Of May
Great album. I'd rate this as a 4*.
Mellow with a couple of songs that are more rocking
Mismikil snilld, en mjög mikil á köflum. Virkilega flott og skemmtilegt. Myndi líklega hækka ef ég hlustaði oftar.
4 stars, pretty good but not blowing my mind
Fav: deep blue/ sprawl ll Least fav: rococo Maybe it’s recency bias, but I think the second half of the album is much better This is my introduction to arcade fire.
4.5 stars. Solid indie rock album despite feeling a bit repetitive and metronomic. Similar sound throughout means no really strong hits but no weak tracks either. The steady pace gives a consistency as the husband + wife duo singers alternate and lead a feeling of floating toward a dreary future while holding on to nostalgia.
J’ai adoré. + un 4,5. J’ai ete heureusement surprise. Je connaissais plein de tune hihi.
I liked that a lot more than I expected to. I'm not sure there were any bangers here but there were no duds either. The production was solid throughout and there was a strong flow from beginning to end. Sure, it started to drag towards the end of the album but it never fully fell apart. I didn't really dig the concept of the album as I'm not into suburban, middle-class American ennui as an aesthetic. It seems a bit pathetic which is the main reason this doesn't score a 5 for me. The other reason is that it's bloated. There are at least 3 tracks here that could have been cut to make the album super tight. I know, I know, "It's a concept album! Every track tells part of the story!" Well, maybe you should tighten up your storytelling, then. Kill your darlings. It's close to great but falls short. But it is pretty darn good and that's not nothing.
Enjoyed this and will definitely listen again. I never got on the AF bandwagon so it's nice to be able to come at this with fresh ears.
Beautiful album. Just a bit too long. I’ve been listening a lot to Sprawl II the last couple of years. Arcade Fire has always been a singles band for me. But this time it clicked in album form. Listened through it three times. The three first tracks are really great. New favourite: Ready to start
After what I consider one of the all time great debut albums - Funeral, they came out with the truly awful (flat, boring, insipid) second effort Neon Bible. Apparently the band agreed with me as in the four times I've seen them they've never played a song from Neon Bible. The Suburbs was a return to form. Although not as strong as Funeral (which they've never equaled in my opinion), it is a strong album throughout.
It’s a great album. It’s not my fave of theirs and I don’t pick it up often but I’d find it incredibly difficult to listen without thinking of sweaty summer nights dancing in crowds watching this racket play. It’s an even better album for conjuring those memories.
This was good - a varied set of sounds. But I don't think I'd rush to listen again.
Another classic, although I don't know that it's actually that high up on my list of AF albums I usually listen to. Definitely has some hits. City with No Children -- really feels like one long song so far. Really enjoying it. Modern Man had some fun time signature bending which was neat. Didn't get it finished, but will listen to the rest today
Better than the previous Arcade Fire album that I was given but still didn't really excite me. Had some parts that stood out though. If I could go back I'd give that a 3 and this maybe a 3.5 but a 4 will have to do.
Loved the beginning and end. It gave me nostalgic feelings from a time gone by as a kid who grew up in a suburb. Some of the songs in the middle felt a bit flat but overall great album.
Already heard it- 8/10
I only discovered Arcade Fire the other year with Funeral. Enjoyed it but didn't venture elsewhere in their discography. Likewise, I really enjoyed this album. Similar veins to Funeral, but the longer runtime resulted in a few more songs that I think could have been cut. Some great tracks though
First 8 or so songs are bangers, gets a little long after that otherwise would have been a 5
8/10 while I can’t call myself an arcade fire fan, this is still an undeniably good album
Enjoyed
I’ve had Arcade Fire on my list to listen to for a little while now as I’ve seen their debut album float around quite a lot, which I’m sure is on this list as well, but I ended up with this album first instead which is very enjoyable nonetheless. Despite the band’s sound being primarily indie rock there are a multitude of sounds on this record that really keep you listening, from the upbeat title track opener that has this steady beat reminiscent of an old speakeasy with a band playing in the corner, the piano really helps with that, to the to the build up instrumental of ‘Rococo’ that starts with an acoustic guitar riff and builds up to this grand finale of an electric guitar lead by some steady drums. Further examples include ‘Half Light II’ that has the pace of an electronic track consistently beating through, and ‘We Used To Wait’ that prioritises the piano into a build up of the drums really letting the instrumental speak. My other 2 stand out tracks are ‘Empty Room’ which is very fast paced accompanied by some dreary almost shoegaze instrumentation in the back ground, both vocalists do incredibly well too being very in sync with each other and keeping the energy. The other track being ‘Sprawl II’ which is definitely a bit more electronic inspired with keyboards taking over accompanied by what sounds like the maracas. I think what makes these 2 stand out the most is the inclusion of the female vocalist, she fits the style so well and really adds to the tracks. What’s stopping me from giving this album a top rating is the length of the album. Although some tracks are very memorable I had to go back and really re-listen to some others as they just flew past me. Another part is sometimes I find the lyrics a little bland, for the most part they’re great but on songs like ‘Rococo’ and ‘Month of May’ the over repetitive nature of the tracks titles does slightly ruin it for me, I want to hear more verses because the verses are great! Overall, I did like this album quite a bit, some things not so much as others but the sound that was created on this record was fantastic and I look forward to going back to a good handful of these songs. 4/5
Beautiful music
Enjoyable
Þetta er drullugóð plata!
I liked this album quite a bit. I liked how the songs merged into each other, it made it feel more like a concept album, even though it really isn't. I liked the instrumentation, I liked the feel and nature of the songs (being from the suburbs myself). I related to the lyrics a lot. I remember hearing Arcade Fire on SNL and they really did not impress me. But this album did. I don't know if I would run out to get their latest, but this was something I appreciated.
I like their debut album better, but I do like this one too. I feel like I had a copy of it at one time - maybe it was a roommate's. The first 4 songs are great, though I like Modern Man even more than the two singles (title track and Ready to Start). I can't believe they released 7 singles (since Month of May - not their best - was packaged with the Suburbs) but yeah, I do recall all of them on the radio at sometime. They have some songs that are a bit meh, but every time the album dips it picks right back up. Like Half Light I or Sprawl I - both meh - but Half Light II and Sprawl II are both awesome. I'd almost say the album is too long, but the back half has a bunch of real gems with Deep Blue and We Used to Wait (the best single in my opinion). Yeah, real solid effort but not quite a 5.
This is a grower. My first impression was "I didn't need to hear this before I die" and I wasn't surprised to see it was removed from the book. By the third listen, I was really enjoying it and by the fourth listen I was liking every track. I definitely want to keep listening. Tracks I really liked (usually by the third listen): Ready Start, Modern Man, Rococo, City with No Children, Half Light (I and II), Suburban War, We Used to Wait, and Sprawl II (sounds like Daft Punk meets 70s disco - I like).
ekasta biisistä tietää.. jo osaa aavistaa.. Konsepti albumi... ja on hieno.... Väliaine jolla tunne tuodaan kuitenkin.. HÄVETTÄÄ KUUNNELLA.. harmittaa koska todella hyvä toistaan tukeva kokonaisuus.. mutta noi rummut on vaan niin MYÖTÄHÄPEÄ EI HELVETTI! Kitaran laiskan lörpökkä römpötys... pistää vihaksi.. hankala kuunnella jos ei anna kaikkea albumin syntejä anteeksi.. SYNTEJÄ ON USEITA...
Interesting, 7/10
Already have heard it 8/10
This was an acceptable album. It didn’t overly tickle my fancy, but I liked some it and didn’t hate any of it.
This album won a Grammy. Without knowing what it was up against, that fact alone should land it on the list. After listening to it, I can add my opinion and say the voters didn't get it wrong.
Great album sprawl II is a great song, 4.4
classic alt rock - great vibes all around
Knew a couple tracks ahead of time and they're great. This goes from folky to some harder tracks. It's a little too long perhaps and I'm not sure I love the singers voice. Otherwise pretty good.
Wow what a great record!
Ok
Very good album, they do earnestly sleazy French country rock better than most. 4 stars.
I think this album belongs on the list of albums you must hear before you die, because it is unique in the sound and the scope of what Arcade Fire was attempting to accomplish. Saying that, it is not my favorite Arcade Fire album because it is less concise than "Neon Bible" and "Funeral." For me, what makes this album deserve to be on this list also makes it not my favorite AF album.
I'd never heard of this band before, but I was pleasantly surprised and I enjoyed this album. I really liked "Sprawl II"
Not the biggest fan of the modern additions to the “1001 list” but this one proves to be one of the more enjoyable.
I avoided Arcade Fire at first and while this album is not their debut it provides excellent evidence as to why they blew up to begin with on the one hand and polishes it up with the other. It is maybe a little overlong to be a five star record but it is quite good.
I have fond memories of the title track. We were spending a few weeks in Austin Texas, we got a rental upgrade to a Jeep SUV and the indie radio stations played The Suburbs over and over, as did the malls, grocery stores and gyms. I felt very patriotic when I discovered it was a “Canadian” band hotting up the fabled Austin music scene, though in fact the Butler brothers grew up not far from Austin. “Ready to Start” is another great track and up-tempo enough for me to use in my spinning classes so I have to give the LP at least a 4. Many of songs have a bleak, hopeless feel to them, a combination of the lyrics and Winn Butler’s vocals. The multi-instrumental approach gives them a big sound and they keep things as fresh as they can, mixing up the song intros pace and letting Chassagne sing a bit, yet the hopelessness still comes out. If they condensed this down to a 40-minute effort it would be awesome.
god s
Listened to this while hungover and tired but i think i liked it, if maybe a bit long
I'm now wondering why I haven't played this album much since I bought it when it was released. It's great!
When this came out I was all about Arcade Fire, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and all that. The biggest most recent wave of sad boy indie guitar, it was everywhere. Now I've moved on obviously, but still have to pop back to Funeral from time to time, which remains superb. I haven't felt drawn to this in the same way over the years, although it definitely has some of their best songs on it. Honestly if this album was around 48 minutes long it would probably be getting 5 stars. As it is, it's just too long and as others have said, in hindsight drags in the middle. Songs that make it too long while not really adding anything: City with no Children, Half Light II, Month of May. That said, it does an expert job of creating a consistent mood, you can really visualise the subject matter and imagine yourself wondering around somewhat soulless, humdrum and empty cookie-cutter neighbourhoods as you listen to it. Favourites: Ready To Start, Sprawl II, Suburban War
The album is melodic, full of heart and just an enjoyable experience. Admittedly, knowledge about the band is limited, the music being allowed to speak for them. "City With No Children" as ominous as that may sound, is a beautifully played song. While not exactly a rock opera, "Half Light I" and "Half Light II" play as a show within themselves with strong melodies and driving rhythms. In a great way, the album takes us somewhere else for a few minutes to enjoy an EP within an album. Overall, the album is seemingly sincere and that carries a lot of weight here.
Solid 4
The final good Arcade Fire album is, in retrospect, not quite as good as I remembered. A few too many dirges. You could cut it back to just the songs that seem to tell a story and probably have a better album. When it’s at its best it’s easily the equal of Funeral and Neon Bible, but it doesn’t happen as often as it should. I do like it a lot though. Disclaimer Win is a shit head.
At first listen I was underwhelmed and felt the album lacked distinctiveness. Wanting to be fair and open minded, however, I persisted and The Suburbs really started to grow on me - anthemic, rich and absorbing. My current assessment is that the album will reward repeat listens as it pulls you into the experience of growing up in The Suburbs - a frequent topic for song writing, usually sneering, but here rather more affectionate and moving.
I enjoyed this. I though this was good.
This is a really good album. There aren't really standout songs in the same way there are on Funeral, but it all flows together beautifully and shows you a world in a way that very few bands can do (particularly more modern ones). The bonus tracks (not on the link that the site gives us) are also really good, the one with David Byrne in particular. 4/5.
Not so much a release as a cultural touchstone in the way that only certain brands of indie bands seem to be able to achieve. The Suburbs does something that I think its quite remarkable, its a long album but it never really strays from sounding on brand. I'm not going to analyse what makes an Arcade Fire song sound like an Arcade Fire song, but they are an instantly recognisable band and every song on The Suburbs is of a very consistent tone and quality. Personally I love The Suburbs, the song writing as I have already mentioned is great, the vocals are never not totally on point, its got so many hits on it that most bands would take 3 albums to build up that many singles. But more than anything its interesting. There's always stuff going on to hold your attention and has been very finely crafted as such, its as much an achievement as a good record. If I had one complaint its probably that its bookended with the best song on the record which is maybe on purpose, start and end with your best melody but I feel like it could have been a really good mid album high point to keep the momentum up. 4/5
Probably their best album all told. Some absolute bangers here, this is a 4.5 rounded down.
4.5
It's a four. The first quarter of the album is a five, taking up where The Neon Bible left off. But 16 full tracks is a bit too much and the second half of the album has a couple of samey tracks on. 12 tracks, 48 mins guys.
I love how fiercely ambitious this group are, just forging ahead with their own brand of quirky, melodic, and often profound, music.
Pretty great! I missed this one in 2010
Not my favorite Arcade Fire album, but still solid, captures a certain emotion
The Suburbs is the second album recommendation from Arcade Fire in this list. I'm still not to the point where I feel like there is an Arcade Fire sized hole that needs filling, but I enjoyed this album. I liked every track, which is impressive for a 16 track album. My favorites were "City with No Children", "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)", "Suburban War", and "The Suburbs". I could easily come back to this album to see what else I might discover on a second listen.
I thoroughly enjoyed that! Way more than I expected.
First three AF albums are all recommendable. Funeral: 5. Neon Bible: 4.5. Suburbs: 4. Last album does have a fair share of 5-star songs as well, but it is just hard to take in one go. While the music is excellent, something that does not help are the rather silly lyrics - this holds for all their albums though..
Up there with Funeral. Solid album.
Not as strong as their previous works, but the band is really growing on me. Some great songs captured in the interesting lyrical theme, with a great sound.
Entertaining album without a real highlight but an overall good and enjoyable quality of songs
weak 4/5
This is probably my favorite arcade fire album even though they have others that are more popular. This one was a great blend of their orchestra and unique instrumentals mixed with good lyrics and enjoyable Melodies. I could listen to this album several times through as it has many layers and packs so much in it. Definitely one of the better contemporary albums on this list. 8.4/10
Excellent stuff again. They’re magic I’ll always say it. I struggled with this one because I wanted to give it more than a 4 but I only gave Funeral a 4 and I’m not sure if it’s better than that, so they both get 4.9s.
4.5/5. Controversies aside with their lead singer, this record is one of the most important indie rock albums of all time.
Never really paid much attention to Arcade Fire but have always liked what I've heard. Ready to Start is a fave on this album and Rococo kept catching my attention and might need a few more listens to fully understand. But Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) is my absolute favourite.
A solid listen, yeah. Archetypal indie rock of a certain flavor. Actually, this has made me realize there's no Decemberists in the list, which seems like a pretty whopping oversight. Not that the Decemberists are particularly like Arcade Fire - I guess I encountered them at a similar time so they're mentally filed close together in my brain? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fave track - hmmm, could be "Modern Man" or "Month of May" for being upbeat. "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains" with the female vocals is also absolutely lovely, and serves well as an album closer....
I like this album there are a lot of really good songs. Starts off really well with the title track and only loses momentum after about 5 or 6 songs and only for a couple or three songs then ends really well. It's not Funeral it doesn't have the combination of the grandiose with the innocence of youth that made that album so exciting and fresh. Still a very good album 4 stars
Nostalgiatron
If you can separate the artist from the group and this album, the album is phenomenal.
4.5
Arcade Fire did a music video for “We Used to Wait” that had your neighbourhood (aka Google Maps imagery of your neighbourhood) getting overtaken by a forest. My brother and I listened to that song so many times putting different scenes from our shared childhood into the video. Listening to the album in its entirety for the 1st time, the songs didn’t resonate with my own suburban memories quite as strongly, but I’m also really bad at listening to lyrics. Very strategic of Arcade Fire to release this when I was still a kid, since it still takes me back there anyway. October 18, 2022
It took me a moment to get into this album, but once I did, it really started to come alive. The music is grandiose if a bit simple, but it is extremely effective. My favorite moments are when the 80s inspired electronic elements and simple driving drumbeat take over turning what could easily be categorized as bland 21st century alternative rock into something a bit more baroque and intriguing. There are some interesting melodies here but the real strength of this album is its cohesiveness and thematic unity. The last third of the album is absolutely stunning. I will need to listen to it again and hopefully the rest will click as well.
Really liked it, would listen to more Arcade Fire but I expect they’ll show up again on here at some point. Shame it’s too long. Why do they keep doing this.
Very good indie album
Nice album great feeling Varied enough to not get boring, but still a little to long
4.4 + A beautifully composed and performed suite of songs themed around growing up in suburbia, complete with AF's flare for channeling nostalgia through a lens of emotional immediacy. Standouts: "Sprawl I" and "Sprawl II", "We Used to Wait", "City with No Children."
I actually think I underrated this album initially given my high expectations after their first two albums that I liked so much. Pretty good upon revisiting, actually. Standouts: The Suburbs, Ready to Start, Modern Man, Sprawl II
This is an excellent album. The different sounds keep it from being stale, but it still feels connected as a whole. Pretty good
Okey....
I thought that this album would be boring, but I was pleasantly surprised. It wouldn't shock me if this greatly influenced the modern indie rock scene. There's even a shoegazey section on this album.
Loved this one when it came out. Not as big on it now, but Sprawl II still rules.
I really like this album. Nice arrangements and performances that are “indie pop” sounding in the positive sense of the term. When they add the strings and extra voices, it creates layers and a depth that are quite compelling. Solid, solid album by a great band. I missed them completely when they were churning out these records but I’m glad this project brought them to my attention.
Bello.
My favorite Arcade Fire album. Oddly, I think that Arcade Fire is an acquired taste. I clearly remember not caring for them when I first heard them but I cannot remotely find that feeling anymore. Now, this is damn good. Favorite songs: The Suburbs and We Used to Wait
Love it. I really underestimated this band in the beginning.
I prefer the first two records, but We Used to Wait and Suburban War are fabulous.
Their passion and commitment are clear and convincing. The playing and arrangements are generally effective and intermittently compelling. The hooks are decent and there are some immersive atmospheres. Varied textures and tempos add to the ride as well. Certainly, the drama builds but one questions whether it builds to any crescendo worth reaching – that is, someplace one would find relatable or sufficiently resonant to merit the effort of the journey. Lyrics remain mostly pedestrian, though with quite a few less howlers than on Funeral, which had many of the same strengths (and weaknesses). Much preferring the National, one just can’t go all the way with AF. It feels like an objective 4, but in terms of personal engagement a 3.
The list keeps getting better and better.
win butler hijo de putaaa album guay tho
It has 3 really good songs
I remember buying this album of the back of We Used to Wait which is a quality tune. The album is pretty decent as well, taking a journey through suburbia and the 'thrills' of city life. I listened to it loads at the time and it's still worth a spin now and then, but can't quite warrant the full five stars as it loses a bit of energy towards the end.
Indie rock, 2010. One of the best inde records of the 21st Century and one of the peaks of this band. The album is really solid from the start until the end and the tracklist is just perfect with also a great mood mostly quiet and calm. Both voices during the project fit really well the vibe of the LP, the lyrics are pretty clever and the music is always interesting.
4/5 Reminds me of the Killers sound. Nice mix of clean guitar and complex synth sounds. Modern Man has interesting 4/4 + 5/4 switch up throughout.
noice lo
Feels slightly dated now but still a great album
I’m a weird Arcade Fire fan. I know and love the basic hits, and my favorite album is Reflektor. It’s time to finally listen to the Suburbs while living in one. The eponymous opener is a catchy yet slightly haunting tune about the tension between kids and their parents as well as the tension between a bubble-like suburban neighborhood and the real world. I listened to this record as I cleaned the house, so I didn’t do an extremely close listen. I did, however, hear many songs I enjoyed and I recognize that I should definitely listen again! The mix of Depeche Mode and Neil Young, as Win Butler himself characterizes this record, accomplishes this wistful atmosphere (again reflecting the experiences within the suburb). Humble melodies and evolving arrangements make for something that is pleasing easy listening as well as something to be musically and literarily analyzed. I’m going to give this album a four — I like it very much but it doesn’t have the effect that some of the other 5’s have! Excited to listen again!
deras musik är verkligen så bra?
Decent
Wonderful and unique. Terrific band. Good albums.
Something I would have listened to often when I was in high school.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Very nice melodies, though I didn't pay close attention to the lyrics as much. Some of these songs really stick in your head for a while, and I'm here for it. Anyway, I'll come back again.
I have listened to this one many times. Good album.
Something about this album makes me so happy. I loved it the moment I first heard it, and every re-listening experience delights me. Everything feels right about this recording--every groove, every moment of passion, from "Modern Man" to the illimitable and unassailable "Sprawl II". Is the album over-dramatic? Yes, of course, in spots, but for me that's part of its charm. Searching for a place in the modern world, a world dominated by the lifelessness, the creative barrenness, of the suburbs. It's weird... this is kind of a coming-of-age album, but only kinda, as if it's being sung in retrospective, for the point of view is very much an adult one considering the futility of continued human generation. Ambition has rarely been more captivating than the magic caught on this album.
Celkem 🔥. 7,5/10
One of my fav albums from high school. I think it can be bloated at times, but some tracks are timeless. Ready to start, half life II, wasted hours, we used to wait, and sprawl II are the favorites. Usually come back to it at least once a year.
I've been unfair to Arcade Fire. Based on this album, they are not what I thought they were. They are outside of my wheelhouse these days, but in my other life, when I was listening to Morrissey, The Smiths, Beautiful South, etc this would've been one of my favorite albums.
This record continues to grow on me all these years later.
Indie rock que no está mal. Venga, un 4.
I like this album very much. I have been listening it for years. I was the way a learned to appreciate the Arkade Fire's work. For moments, I find it disturbing. But always I find it melancholic, with a touch of sadness.
Standout track: "Month of May"
Chulo, no me lo esperaba asi
In suburbs, in the bushes by a children's boating lake in a park I once saw SHACK clad only in a grimace and his mother's fishnet tights furiously reciting Othello in a menacing mumble. He's an actor now darling. I am reminded of this stark image when listening to this album and I think it speaks more to the music's essence than I ever could.
Great band. Not sure why this album made the list and not one of their previous two but whatever. Still enjoyed it.
Super nice album. I wish I had gotten into this thing when it was released but somehow it passed me by. Really quality songwriting throughout and very relatable lyrics about find your identity in a world that can quickly push people into a box growing up. 8/10
The Arcade Fire: growing up in the suburbs can be alienating at times. Aging Gen-Xers as they start to make up the majority of the Grammy voting body: holy shit yes
Rococo and We Used To Wait are the high points of a brilliant album. Definite vinyl purchase down the line.
🔥
Minneapolis Nostalgia (the current!). Sprawl II major highlight
Cool album
High school nostalgia. Love wasted hours
i can sort of remember listening to "Funeral" about a year ago. the style and sound of this album feels quite similar but i can tell "Funeral" is my favorite between the two. both albums are quite good, but Arcade Fire just doesn't get better than "Funeral". this album is still fantastic though
Probably their best album
03/22/2022 Such a great album. Soooo close to a 5-star rating.
Enfin un album écoutable! J'aime bien les arrangements de cordes de Owen Palet Les tones de drums et guits sont cool J'aime bien le beat croche de modern man Rococo me tombait sur les nerfs avant mais it grew on me et maintenant je l'aime bien Bonnes chansons bien construite, bien arrangée, progressions d'accords surprenantes. J'écoute quand même souvent cet album si on pouvait mettre des demi étoile j'aurais mis 4.5
