# Album Name: Histoire De Melody Nelson # Artist: Serge Gainsbourg # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: The opening track is interesting. Musically this album is very good. Lots of different uses and styles. Sadly, the attempted sexy french accent and lyrics bring this right down. I wonder if you can get an instrumental only version of the album. That would be much better. The undertone of the album regarding the 15 year old is quite frankly disgusting. # Top Tunes: Melody / Ah melody / Cargo # Would I listen to it again? No - due to the undertone.
I like the music, but it doesn’t make up for the theme of the album
Not my cup of tea
Dislike even with who it influenced ie Air etc. Spoken cranky bass
I'm not gonna lie it sounded like a cool movie soundtrack but it kinda just was weird lol I'm not saying it was bad necessarily but it wasn't my cup of tea!
As much as I liked the instrumentation and the music itself, it’s very hard to give this a positive review, knowing that it’s about having sex with a 14-year old. Look, I know it was done over 50 years ago, and some acceptable behavior has now been deemed unacceptable. But even so… ew. NEXT.
The beats are funky and kind of cool. Almost as cool as a Curtis Mayfield album from that time. But I wish it was set to different vocals and lyrics. Gainsbourg's whisper singing is annoying as F. His actual singing isn't much better. And then whatever those sounds are when they sneak off to the hotel - terrible. Of course, the story being told at that point and throughout the album lyrics are cringeworthy. Why is it always middle aged French men with critic-adored (or panned) scripts about someone their age getting with a barely teenage girl? The lyrics aren't for me, though I can appreciate the seamless movement of the story from song to song. He captures a concept, as depraved as it might be. I can also appreciate this album's novelty and how it set up some other music that followed (trip hop...not exactly my style either). I don't hate it (at least not the music). But I'm not sure I like it either. It might be closer to a 3 than a 2. Still...
I don't speak French - if I were to just judge based on the music, I would say it sounds like what would happen if Leonard Cohen turned French and funky. The music alone would probably bring the album to at least a 3, if not a 4. However, the album cover provides cause for caution: Jane Birkin as a young, topless girl clutching a doll over her chest. She was 25 when the album was released, so the pedophilia is suggested, not actual...until you read the translation of the lyrics. In a nutshell, while driving one night, the narrator hits a young girl who is riding a bicycle: Melody Nelson, who we learn is not quite 15. He becomes obsessed with her (and whether she's a virgin - saying "Oh! Melody / You don't know what love is / You told me that yourself / But is everything that you say true?" and then "Oh! Melody / If you lied to me I'd do / Some crazy things / I don't know what I'll do to you"). He takes her to what sounds like a pretty seedy hotel and, well, "Slowly, I embraced Melody." Ugh. Spoiler alert: she dies in a plane crash and he is left poetically pining for her. Maybe this album is shades of Lolita - you're supposed to recognize that the narrator is a horrible person. At least I hope so, because if he meant it...ugh. Double ugh. Reading up on Serge Gainsbourg, it sounds like he was a provocateur - and hopefully provocation was his aim - but it's just too hard not to think of this album as a paean to pedophilia. The seductive musical style makes it even worse. The ick is too strong, and I move on.
kinda cool at first, but got boring
I know a little bit of french and I can guarantee you this album has nothing special. It doesn't say anything, it barely tells a story. It's just a middle aged pedo telling a 15 yo how much he loves her 7 times. like bro what? create stories out of music not crime scenes dammit 🤦🏻♂️
asswater
Silky smooth! Didn't really light me up, but it was worthwhile.
Shhh.... don't fight it little girl, it'll be over before you know it.
This isn't the worst thing I've ever heard, but this is certainly lacking a lot of redeeming qualities.
meh. started off decent. wasn't paying attention by the end.
The truly gross factoid is that as late as 2011, people I thought I respected were performing a live version of this ode to a fourteen year old. While I can't *really* get my head around the whole, 'it was a different time' excuse, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Victoria Legrand and the dude from Grizzly Bear maybe should have thought twice about participating as recently as 15 years ago. But I guess Gainsbourg has pretentious, artsy-enough vibes that everyone looked past it? Track 6 with the squealing and giggles is seriously yuck.
Agréablement surpris. Si on mute le susurreur fou c'est presque 4
Sounds good but it's too sleazy.
Day485 - maybe being french makes it suck less but not much
Not really an album I liked too much, but I did like the song Melody Lit Barbar the Instrumental Version.
Maybe this would be more exciting if I had paid attention in French class, but it's just a guy talking over music.
I really liked the instrumentation of this album. The 60s sounding guitar, interesting bass work, and at times intricate drumming. The orchestral accompaniment fit in nicely and added a little more depth to the otherwise fairly simple songs. I also didn't mind that most of the album felt like repeating riffs/ melodies for the length of the song while the vocals (probably) told a story. What I didn't like was the vocals. The first song felt like poor mixing, I was intrigued by the composition until the voice came in too loud and took over. The woman voice repeating her name in the second track and laughing later in the album really took me out of it.
This one is questionable. Probably shouldn’t be on the list, but here it is. The music is mostly ok, the theme is creepy af.
I quite enjoyed some of the instrumentation....but I don't like talking over music. Either sing or just leave it as instrumental music.
Nothing about this appeals to me, and I assume that if I knew French I'd like it even less. (I guess Tommy is a concept album about child abuse too, but frankly I never liked that all that much either.)
I don't really get it 2.5
This was the weirdest thing to listen to but I kinda liked it a little? There were several points where I felt the drama of the story, in part because of things like the orchestra or his vocals. Ethan told me about the story behind the album, which makes the album cover make a little more sense. I don't think I would listen to this again, but I admired the creativity behind it.
Melody Nelson Has Red Hair, And It's Her Natural Color 1001 Albums Generator 11 (04/16/2025) Here we have an album about a man who falls in love with a fourteen/fifteen year old girl. The album has largely spoken vocals and the lyrics are in a language I don't understand. That's three potential strikes against this album that I was able to gather from only looking at Wikipedia and RateYourMusic before I had even heard a second of it. Now that I have heard the album, let's talk about it. Potential strike 1: The elephant in the room is this album's narrative. From reading translations of the lyrics, the protagonist of this story hit a young girl, Melody Nelson, with his car. He falls in love with her (despite the fact that she is only fourteen) and decides that he wants to take her virginity. They go to a hotel and consummate their relationship. On her flight home, she dies, and the narrator is left depressed and alone. I do feel like this story is better than I was expecting, as you do feel that it's a tragedy. Of course, it is tragic for Melody, who is groomed into sex as a minor and then dies, but I believe there is some tragedy for the narrator. My reading of the lyrics is that the narrator is alone in the world, starving for some sort of love. From his perspective, he has found love for the first time in his life, and it was taken away from him. Don't get me wrong, if the narrator of this album were a real person, I would certainly be calling for his jailing and/or chemical castration, but I do think this album forces you to recognize the humanity in someone that does one of the most disgusting things a human can do, and that makes it great art. VERDICT: NOT A STRIKE Potential strike 2: Spoken word vocals. This is where the album gets tough. The first song and the last three all feature spoken vocals, and the mixing is like... kind of terrible. Like, especially in the first song, the mixing of the instruments with his voice is just bad; it sounds like he is speaking directly in my ear and I can barely hear the instruments over his speaking. I also just hate how Jane Birkin just spends the whole album saying "Melody" and then laughing obnoxiously during En Melody. VERDICT: STRIKE Potential strike 3: Non-English lyrics on a story-based album. Okay, I'm not trying to get in trouble here; I obviously understand that people speak languages other that English. My (potential) gripe is more with the fact that I perceived this to be such a vocal-centric album that I would not be able to get a full appreciation for it. While I do think that may be the case, I don't think that it posed as much of an issue as I thought it would, because while the lyrics are important to understanding the album, the vocal style does honestly drag down the overall quality as mentioned above, so being able to not focus on it was probably a positive. VERDICT: NOT A STRIKE Hey 2/3 ain't bad. By the way, did you know there's actually music on this album? I know, it's hard to believe; we've already discussed so much without talking about the music itself, and the music is ultimately... fine. Looking at other reviews, I imagine this is blasphemy, but I don't know. The mixing killed it for me. There are moments, such as Melody and En Melody, where the band is jamming hard and I love it. However, in the former, his vocals overpower the mix, and in the latter, her laughing is really fucking obnoxious. Other moments, such as the two short songs Valse De Melody and Ah ! Melody show a quieter, more restrained approach to songwriting that really works, but these songs are so short that they struggle to make an impression in my opinion. It is worth noting that Jean-Claude Vannier's orchestral arrangements are at the core of this album's sound, and it is much better for it. The chamber elements throughout and the choral elements in the closer Cargo Culte were really great additions to these compositions. The orchestration and the way it's produced remind me of Umm Kulthum's Arabic style of pop music, which is interesting. Overall, this is an album that I believe is less than the sum of its parts. Instrumental compositions ranging from decent to great, an interesting, tragic story, and fantastic orchestration coalesce into a messy mix of pop, funk, and blues rock that bores me. I would say this is somewhere around a 2.5/5 for me, rounded down to a 2/5. Favs: Melody L'hotel Particulier Cargo Culte Least Fav: Valse De Melody
Assuming this isn’t straight up in praise of pedophilia (a suspect assumption), I still struggle to see much value in the music which to my ears sounds like a formulaic recipe of “seductive” French whispering on top of repetitive riffs that go nowhere. As for the creepy concept, I’d prefer the sleeze to be a bit more satirical and spicy. If anything, Gainsbourg is good at getting in and out. The 28 minute run time is the best thing about this. And to be fair, the conclusion with the concept of the “cargo cult” was pretty cool—just like the primitive people of Oceania worshipping the inconceivable material goods of the west, Gainsbourg’s character (himself) is obsessed with his impossible lover, a god-send, a…child. John Frum will never come again.
I really wish I didn’t know what this is about because the instrumentation is very cool.
Non.
Not a clue what he’s singing as I’m not fluent in French. Musically the backing is ok but the Lolitta like subject matter is a little dubious
it was definitely french
This is supposedly a masterpiece but just isn't doing it for me.
Beetje matig, niet mijn smaak. 2 sterren
So the music was interesting, but the subject matter? Woof. Personal enjoyment: 2 Relevance to this list: 4
Maybe I shouldn't have read the bio of Serge before listening. The music and swarthy French lyricism isn't altogether unpleasant but all I hear is a pervy Pepe Le Pew. By the time I got to the pig-like squealing of En Melody, it felt cringey and like I was listening to something that may be used in court against him.
Just some French dude musing about his chick Melody. Only saving grace was the play on words “Me La dit” but it was still lame
The music was nice but the content of the album was... illegal? Terrible concept for an album which has dated horrifically.
Hard one to review. Musically it is relatively minimalist with a simple back beat, some light guitar and miscellaneous orchestration over spoken word vocals. There are a couple upbeat sections that were pretty good. I was initially intrigued by what I was listening to. Unfortunately I don't speak French so any impact of the lyrics and storyline are completely lost on me. While I read the synopsis, I think a big part of this is being on the ride with the narrator. I'd love to hear an equivalent English version just to get a sense of it. 1.60 stars
Way too weird and esoteric for me. Not enjoyable, especially the fact that it's spoken word rather than singing.
I fins the instrumentation very interesting, but I cannot surpass this uncomfortable feeling about the vocals and concept. The whispering voice makes it feel more intimate, which is very uneasing with the context.
Frenchie would love this album, but I didn’t :(
Some really good music composition on this album. The voice parts turn me off to it though. And then there is the content....
Another album which would have scored higher if it was an instrumental
It's quite nicely put together - I do quite like the spoken word/singing hybrid stuff, he's like a less weird French Tom Waits from the sound. Fortunately, my French isn't good enough to detect quite how noncey this album is, that was a disappointment to read afterwards. 2/5.
It’s kind of a strange album. Very chill musically, but the near spoken word delivery of the lyrics gets kind of repetitive. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
I’m not sure I understood this one. I’m not even sure if knowing French would’ve helped me understand it much more. Musically it was decent, but spoken word French vocals didn’t leave much for me to work with.
Some albums are better off without lyrics. Who knew such a controversial album could be on the list? That comes from a guy who liked "MMLP". It could be argued that "History de Melody Nelson" is an attempt at shock value or something, but Serge Gainsbourg made a song called "Lemon Incest," making this less likely. The background music prevents this album from getting a single star. 2 stars for "Histoire de Melody Nelson".
When you take the time to translate the French you realize this whole album is about a guy trying to bang a 14 year old girl.
It’s moody and kind of smoky, but it feels more style than substance. The strings are pretty, but they don’t hit hard. It just doesn’t land. It’s cool until you know the concept, but not much else.
I saw runtime and got a little excited, but this somehow feels like a real journey to get through. Like when you're on a road trip and you get a flat tire. It feels really romantic, nice string section, but just a little too boring for me.
Normally I’d be psyched to get an album like this but honestly this album was just boring.
This a French album with a sexy beat and sounds very French.
Alternative rock about the young woman Melody Nelson. All French. Spicy
Quoi?
fuck the pedophiles
In french. But Melody est anglaise. Not a fan of the context.
The music is so boring that I wouldn’t want to learn French to know what he is saying.
Well, it's a new year, and it seems the Randomizer figured the best way to kick it off would be to have my group listen to an album entirely in **French**! Ah, yes, finally, a chance to put my mandatory French classes to good use! Except not really! 'Cuz, for one, I never actually retained anything from those classes, despite taking them for most of my schooling career... And, two, well, from everything I've read about this album, maybe I don't **want** to know what this thing's actually about? I kinda don't wanna get myself too worked up over an album that came out over 50 years ago, but, f'woof, boy, if finding out this thing's plot didn't make me a little biased against it from the start. It's... A **little** gross, to put it mildly? "A middle-aged man falls in love with, lusts after and has sex with a 14 year-old before she dies in a plane crash." Eee-yuck-o. But whatever. I've never been lyrics-first anyway, as I've stated multiple times, and that goes double for albums that aren't in English. Is that me being ignorant or whatever? Oh, probably, absolutely. But I always figure, music is its melody, so if this thing is lyrically gross, at least it won't be **as** notable. So, how does this thing stand up melodically, then? Uhm... I'm finding it hard to be impressed by it. Like, the instrumental work is all well and good, but... I'unno. Nothing about it strikes me with any particular "Wow!" factor. No kind of "Oh, that's cool" or "Oh, that was clearly the inspiration for [artist]." Mostly just, "Huh. Well, OK." It was pretty easy for this stuff to breeze by me, not helped by the fact that this thing doesn't even run 28 minutes. Which, to be clear, I don't think is necessarily a bad thing. I'd rather this thing get in, do its thing, and then get out in a succinct, tight package than drag itself on for another ten or twelve minutes. It just doesn't terribly help first impressions sometimes. Then there's this guy's voice, where all I feel like I really hafta say is that it's a bit too, y'know, ASMR at times? I don't like how often I heard his spittle. It's a bit off-putting. And it's not like the woman playing the 14 year-old girl does much to distract from that. I swear, all she says on this album is her character's name; she may as well be a Pokémon. That's probably something that makes sense in the context of the story, but I'd rather **not** consider the story, so... Blehh, I'unno. For most of the album I was willing to give it a 3 because, again, the instrumentation was nice enough. Honestly, as I'm sitting here writing this review, I'm feeling so unenthusiastic about it that... Aw, heck — it's a 2. I really didn't get much of it besides "Eh, sure" and "Ecch, ew." So that's not a great way to start up the year. But, hey, on the bright side, there's more than enough room to go up from here. Plus, at least now I can treat this thing like my French classes and forget I ever partook in them. If that ain't a positive for this kind of album, zut alors, I swear.
Some OK parts to the album, but not good enough
Too much talk singing and melodrama I think the concept of the album was a bit off off putting. I usually like this genre
Mid as hell
Kinda sounds interesting but I won't be listening to this again. Je n'ai pas compris ce qu'il a dit et je me suis inquiété de ce qu'il pouvait vouloir dire.
walk about 2 feet away from the mic lil bro
This might be the most uncomfortable I've ever felt listening to an album. Here we have the acclaimed 1971 album Histoire de Melody Nelson by French musician Serge Gainsbourg. This album is freaking weird. This is most obvious in the album's premise. See, this is a concept album. Okay. I like those. What's the concept? It's about a man who hits a 14 year old girl with his car and then falls in love with her before her eventual death. Okay. What the fuck? Of course, I'm not one to complain about a piece of media being batshit insane. As a JoJo fan, I don't think I'm allowed to do that, as that would make me a hypocrite. However, I can complain about the glorification of pedophilia, and I will. The writing in this album is kind of gross. I don't like it. And yes, I checked the translations from French to English. I'm not one of those people who gives albums low scores because they're not in English. No, I give albums low scores for having songs that imply statutory rape. My other main complaint with the album is that I don't like Serge's singing, if you can call it that. Well, you can call it that... in some songs. It's fine when he actually sings, however there are other moments when he's doing a spoken word type thing that makes me more uncomfortable. Of course, this album isn't entirely bad. There's a reason why this album is acclaimed and on this list. While I don't like the story, it's at least interesting, so it has that going for it. My main source of praise for this album has to be the instrumentation, which I actually really like. There's good variety between the songs, and the way the songs are composed adds to the progression of the story. I like that. So, overall, while this album kind of grosses me out, I can see good things here. Given the influence of the album, I can understand why this album is on the list. I just don't really like the album myself. Maybe I'm missing something. I don't know. But hey, at least the album's short. Still, given the positive elements here, I can't say I'm entirely upset to have listened to the album. Low 2/5.
cela ressemblait à la bande originale d'un film pornographique des années 80. c'était un peu nouveau et pas trop long, donc c'était tolérable. marqué pour être pédophile
I am on a 109 day Duolingo streak, so I feel qualified to help translate some of the words in this album: vélo means bike content means happy cheveux rouges means red hair Gainsbourg means ephebophile If you ever needed the phrase 'Aimable petite conne' in referring to a 14 year old girl, then you should probably go to prison. Interesting music, and I did enjoy the french, but still - qui donne la chair de poule!
Take away the vocals and this would be a far better album. Some interesting instrumentals but can’t get the singing.
Album 599 of 1001 Serge Gainsbourg -Histoire De Melody Nelson (1971) Rating : 2 / 5 The music was meh and I don't speak French, so it didn't really hit for me. Research found that this album is about a man hitting a 15 year old girl on her bike with his Rolls Royce, who he seduces and falls in love with. Those silly French.
The instrumentation is fine but the vocals are corny. The concept seems to be creepy also. I liked that this was a short album.
2/5. I dig the instrumentation but the deep, French voice throughout the album really throws me off and does not add anything positive. The album is short so it is not overbearing and I do want to enjoy the funk and rock vibes throughout, it's just not doing it for me all the way. I think language does not have to inhibit enjoyment of music but this time it does. Only not a 1 due to the music part of it. Best Song: En Melody, Cargo Culte, Ballade de Melody Nelson
The music was good, but I really could have done without the French man simply speaking over the top of it.
OH COME ON SERGE GAINSBOURG! Histoire De Melody Nelson would have been a good album with good background music which consisted of interesting guitar playing, some well done basslines and interesting orchestral elements but then you just had to ruin it by making the lyrical material about this 40 year old man falling in love and trying to seduce a 14-15 year old girl. Legit, everything about this subject matter is absolutely disgusting and just sours my taste of this album. The only thing saving this album from a full blown 1 star review is the fact that the lyrics are in French meaning i can't understand them. If the lyrics were in a language i could understand(English and some Spanish), then regardless of how good the music sounds, it would get a 1 but because they are not, this album is getting a 1.5 Best Song: En Melody Worst Song: L'Hotel particulier
What in the hell is even this? I enjoyed the music, but I didn’t understand one syllable of the French that was whispered, spoken, or sung into the mic. This was strange.
It’s very French. Not a bad thing, but it’s low on instrumentals and high on vocals I don’t understand. Wasn’t into it.
I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Musically it sounds great, apart from Serge eating the mic. His voice does occasionally border on ASMR territory, but most of the time it just sounds creepy. Maybe that is the intent? I've never read or watched Lolita, but as far as I'm aware it is meant to be a critique of male obsession, albeit a very extreme and controversial one. I haven't had a look at the translated lyrics for this album, but given the various controversies on Serge Gainsborough's wiki (esp. Lemon Incest), and his taste for younger women, I'm veering towards this being more of a creepy album than a provocative critical piece.
A “pseudo-autobiographical” account of the 40-something Gainsbourg’s fling with a 14 year old virgin and his subsequent obsession with her. Yuck. The music and production are great but I really need someone to Eternal Sunshine all knowledge of Serge Gainsbourg from my mind.
This is pretty gross. The instrumentals are cool but the subject matter and the delivery are just so sleazy. He was married to a girl half his age when he wrote this in his 40s, so it is semi biographical. Gross.
this actually sounded pretty good instrumentally but unfortunately i hate pedophilia
The music is pretty good. It’s all spoken dialogue.
maybe I just didn't notice any of the storytelling but this was just music to me
Why is this French dude whispering indistinctly into my ears? Don't care about it enough to give it 1 star but it might be the empties thing I've come across on this list so far (137ish albums in).
Oui oui. More like no no.
Never heard of this artist or this album. Before my time and it's all in French. I like the slinky intro, like the opening scene of a spy movie. It's got a soundtrack vibe from start to finish. Serge is definitely not a singer, just a talker, and not understanding him one bit makes this a long journey for anyone. I can tell he's telling a story, but I can't follow it. Good background music to work by and I think I would have enjoyed it more if he spoke less and included more of the guitar from the intro song. Entertaining yes, Top 1001? Not even close. It's a one trick French pony!
That was.... interesting. I guess? Maybe awesome if you're trying to impress folks with a pretentious taste in music. There were admittedly some great guitar riffs, but overall not particularly enjoyable.
Cool style of chilled funky instrumentals with spoken word on top. But the creepy subject matter is a bit ick
Vá hvað mér fannst ég alltaf vera að hlusta á sama lagið og sama textann aftur og aftur. Melodí eitthvað eitthvað. Elkert að þessu og væei mjög góð bakgrunnstónlist ef ég man þá eftir þessu sem ég mun ekki gera
Music ok, subject totally sus
Couldn't understand anything so I started reading the lyrics and that was a little disturbing. It's about a late 50s man's obsession with a 14 or 15 year old girl who dies tragically in a plane crash. Not that that matters - Lolita is a classic after all - but this didn't affect this review very much. The guy just whispers creepily over non-descript music. The instrumental "En Melody" wasn't bad, but otherwise this is not worth listening to.
I’m not sure about this one. It was easy listening but I don’t think I would listen to it again.
Got bored didn’t listen till the end the historie one was alright
Wonder what this French guy is talking about? Looked it up on wiki, this is an even weirder album then I thought. I guess musically ok, but I'm not going to listen to it again.
I didn't really enjoy this. Tough, for me, to rate something when I don't know what it's about.
Every time I found myself enjoying the music, the vocals really ripped me out of it. Not for me. Thankfully, it was a short album. Likely would rate lower if it was much longer.
I put this on without really looking at it and immediately thought “okay, sorry, but giggling at whatever I’m mishearing as “Melody Nelson”, gee this will be funny when I look and see what they’re actually saying,” but nope, they were whispering and crooning “Melody Nelson” the whole time and it’s just too funny to me. Sexy/groovy French songs about the most bland 1970s teen-girl name I’ve ever heard. I feel like I ruined this for myself. Melody Nelson.
Wtf
The fucking French! The music is class 4/5 The concept is ass 0/5
the concept behind this album is a little strange ngl. the instrumentation is fantastic, but i don’t care for the frenchman whispering in my ear
3 stars for the music 1 star for the noncey French bloke
I don't speak French, but what I did understand from this album was the amount of times he said the name Melody. Serge's obsession with a 15 year old girl is not something I'm going to praise. That being said, I'm not going to praise this sub par album either. I wonder why Melody had to die in a plane crash and not this perv.
Some sorta ok French music I guess
I dunno French is not among my favorite languages
Mediocre. French whisperings into your ear, while jazzy instrumentals are playing. Not exactly groundbreaking. NNN
Some of the music in this is quite good, but the overall effect is strange. The love affair with a 14-year-old lyrics make me glad this is in French, a language I do not speak. And a lot of the quiet whisper singing sounds like self parody of a French concept album. Feels like one of those things where its cultural impact has actually made the real product feel silly 50+ years into the future.
I feel violated
Im ngl the music kinda fire. But you search it up and u get some drake ass info about the songs. wtf
This was a weird and creepy story. Why are the love interests in 60s and 70s songs often concerningly young? I didn't enjoy the singer singing in unison with the strings. I just kind of felt uncomfortable the whole time.
having not understood a single word of this album, i am left to speculate only by vibe. this feels like an album a middle aged man in the 70s would make about his upsettingly young girlfriend & muse who he treated badly and then later killed. i have not checked wikipedia yet to see how i did. 2.5
The music was fine and the vocals were okay not that I could understand them. I won’t be back to this. 2.5/5
3 for the actual music 1 for vocals and sick concept
Rollo.
So many non-English language albums in the world, so few on this list. And what do we get? A weird pedo story. No thanks.
He sure seems to like himself. I don’t.
Weird French dude
Musically not that bad of an album, but it just doesn’t interest me
Some nice music but I don’t understand the words!
Too bizarre to listen to repeatedly, confirmed by a second listen.
French.. cool sounds
french man asmr. no thanks!
Could have done without the French voiceover, but it was kinda nice.
What
Rollo.
Very breathy French. Not really for me.
Thoughts before listening: Serge Gainsbourg is a name I recognize but not one I know much about. I feel like this is likely 70s French easy listening pop music, but that doesn't sound as cool as Serge Gainsbourg's reputation would have me assume. Review: The music sounds really cool, but I hate talk singing. Even when it's in English and I know what's being said I still just find it to be more distracting than enjoyable. This is not something I'd ever choose to listen to on my own, but I guess I'm glad I've now heard it. 2-stars cause the guitar in the first song is pretty cool.
It was okay. I didn’t love it.
It’s better if you understand French. The dialogue did not improve the songs
So... I like the vibe of this album but knowing it's about an old due falling in love with a 14 year old is yikes. I would give it a 1 but I want the 1s I give out to be things I don't ever want to listen to again. As much as I hate the subject matter, the music itself was quite pleasing which saves it. 1.5/5
Meh.
- It sounds like he's trying to seduce me but I'm not French so nope - Eh it sounds nice but not into it - Appreciate how short it is
- oh god the premise of this is gross - probably not as impactful to me because I don’t speak French
While I love French pop AND questionable, pretentious nonsense, this wasn't my scene at all. I don't like music where the main focus is the singing and the instruments unobtrusively provide a bit of backing noise. I'm actually surprised this has a 2.8 overall score (as of writing this). I expected lower.
I liked that it was only half an hour long. I didn't really like the man speaking in french which was most of the album
Super weird concept album
If God was real he would have sent the fatal heart attack to Serge Gainsourg before he ever wrote this shit. The music underlying this French ode to noncery in no ways makes up for or redeems the subject matter.
Short and sweet, but totally wasted on me. Interesting music though.
Not sure what's going on here but I listened to the whole thing
French music. 2/5
Well…at least it was short…
Some of the best prog rock instrumentals I’ve heard combined with lyrics that are moaned straight into your ears and are about a pedophile. Truly a French moment
Jesus, am I conflicted. I mean, on the one hand, this album basically birthed trip-hop: Portishead and Jarvis Cocker were clearly breastfed from the teat of this funky, odd, non-English-language concept album. And on the other hand, Melody was 14yo when the narrator met her and 15yo when he took her virginity, so in essence, they are responsible for two kinds of assault. Ick. I mean, Lolita is both celebrated and reviled. I think this album should be as well. Also, RIP Jane Birkin.
Finally got going by the last track, "Cargo Culte", but "trop de concept, pas assez d'album"
Some of the string accompaniment isn't bad. I'm not into his whole vocal style. Didn't find anything to be all that ground breaking.
Killer Bass and instrumentals but vocals killed it for me.
Dude i dont know how much i can enjoy a concept album about a middle aged man falling in love with a 15 year old girl.
This some Epstein shit
The trick is to hit play on the album of the day and then keep your hands busy. Perhaps too intimate a soundtrack to cut fruit to, but I got it done
There is a lot to unpack with this album. I was prepared to hate this record, but the first thing you notice is the music. It’s like a loungy, cool jazz, rock fusion. It’s got soaring strings coupled with crunchy guitars all coming together with an ambient, laid-back vibe. Could be a Post-rock masterpiece except for the fact that it’s a concept album and lyrics are necessary to convey the concept. The lyrics are not sung, but spoken over the music. Think about the cheesy, stereotypical beat poet with a cigarette and a beret in a jazz café, and that’s with the vibe of the lyrics. Since the lyrics are in French, I am oblivious to the concept. Which is a good thing, because the concept sucks. According to the Internet and other reviews, the narrator is perving on an underage girl he just hit with his Rolls-Royce. I could potentially rate this album a 4, if the lyrics were better integrated into the music and there was not all the pedophilia.
fire instrumentals with a weird pedo story?
This just isn't for me.
In French.
I enjoyed the musical arrangements for the concept album. I feel like this album has to be listened to in the right setting to be fully enjoyed. However, I was extremely weirded out and taken out of it when I realized that the entire story in the album is about an older man falling in for a 14-year-old girl... 1.5
Rollo.
should’ve just been an instrumental album
Interesting 60's vibe with the music, difficult to pin down on genre might be worth repeat listens, as I think it will grow on you
Bad baguette
Rollo.
Just can't push it to 3 :(
The music was okay but the concept and vocals were pretty gross.
1.5/5
Probably best I don't understand the lyrics, given the context. Can hear the influence on Air
I'll start positive by stating that the strings and instrumentals are gorgeous here, with a lot of the big moments left up to them rather than Serge Gainsbourg, and it pays off fantastically. I also find the short runtime to be a Godsend when so many albums feel so long now, even the forty minute ones seem to run me dry, so something more stomach-able such as this leads me feeling far less exhausted than an album that sounds like this would leave me were it hitting an hour. That all being said, I really can't stand that whisper singing Gainsbourg does, as whilst I can see the inspiration for bands like Pulp, the way the microphone seems to peak really irritates my ears, like an annoying, overtly French ASMR. Maybe the songs are really nuanced, but being a stupid American, I couldn't understand them if I tried. Here, let's look up what this album is about! ...oh. Gross. Still, great strings, perhaps another topic with actual singing and this would be an awesome album. Instead, it is most definitely French, and I can fill my French needs elsewhere.
Things I'm not particularly excited about here -French concept album -French concept album about relationship with underage girl (I don't know what the age of consent is in France, but round here this shit is considered gross) I don't know what they're saying, so I don't know exactly how much to dislike the subject matter, but I know that the cover is gross. I honestly wish I hadn't read the Wikipedia summary of this album, since I feel like there's no way I can give this a positive rating. I like the music overall. I wish that the vocals trended more toward singing rather than narrating, but the instrumentals are varied and interesting. Sometimes you have an orchestra, sometimes it's stripped down to just a guitar and drums 2/5 too bad this album is about a barely post-pubescent girl being stripped down by a middle aged man. It would be cool if it wasn't so gross
Too creepy for me (theme of lyrics is gross)
2+
Don't whisper sweet french nothings into my ear. That one song was really good till the laughter started. 4/10
Musikaliskt bitvis ok. Men resten. Va fan Har lyssnat en del på Serges dotter, Charlotte. Som är bra. Hoppas hennes album IRM kommer
Melody //
Sometimes I was vibin, other times, I was in the middle of a perfume commercial - 5/10.
3/10 - When listening to cargo culte I thought that Skyrim had opened because the background sounded like the intro song. Valse was not bad but most of them were just weird and too sensual for my liking.
the music was ok but all the vocals were really bad 3/10
Honestly very interesting musically, but the ASMR vibes of a Frenchman speaking directly into my ear canal makes me hate this. I'm sure the music videos were cool but man I can't stand it. The instrumentation is the only thing keeping this from a 1 for me.
Man this really really wants you to listen on headphones and have some kind of experience with this guy ASMR'ing his wet voice directly into your brain stem. I'm impressed that they were able to get this sound in the 1970's but maybe it's just because the music is mixed so low that you have to pump the volume and then get assaulted by his romantic voice. I write on these reviews sometimes that you "have to be in the right context" to enjoy an album and it's never been more true than for this album. I don't know if maybe it's just because I have a little bit of a headache right now but I can't be bothered to decipher this album more- to read the translation to my language, or to see what is really going on in any other avenue. It's just a sound that I'm not interested in as a whole at the moment.
Has echt versuecht mir da bim schaffe chlige ahzlose aber so nachere stund han ich die tüüf französisch Stimm nüme chöne ghöre. Chan mir nid vorstelle das meh da album konstant chan lose. 2/5
Ok yay endlich mal ned uf englisch? Melody- interesting? Mag s konzept und d musig im hindergrund aber idk the talking in this case nöd soo mis. Aber overall vibe isch nice. Striichinstrument in combi mit distorted guutar ? Mer liebets! UGH YIKES d frauestimm mitem amerikanische akzent hetts grad so killt für mich ohno Ich weiss wie ned öb ichs wük chegge s ganze… versuech mich mal ihzlese?? I’m not getting this obsession with melody like… Ok apparently this guy is important in france idk Ooooooookay. Okay. Aso es isch es concept album- massive storytelling! Hm ich wünscht mis französisch wär guet gnueg zum all wortspiel und so z verstah und ned nur generell um was es gaht? Viellicht chöntis denn meh appreciate… Okay en melody hett mich mitem upbeat sound überrascht, fun! - ok ned nur mitem beat biki überrascht worde lol what Final verdict: ich glaub ich cha zwenig französisch zums wük als kunst appreciate. Ich denke s album muss andersch glost werde, wienis jetz lose. Dont think i’m artsy enough to understand… I really wanted to like this aber iwie it’s not it for me… This was NOT easy listening…
Didn’t enjoy this one, didn’t sound very poppy. Not a fan, 2/5.
What the hell is this. What are we doing here. Its not like it has zero musical merit but definitely not enough to make up for how creepy it would make me feel to listen to this regularly. Why is he so close to the mic. God damn the french
This felt a bit like a smarmy French dignitary was chatting up my wife at a dinner party.
Pretty boring. Some of the instrumentals are nice but the vocals are uninspiring. Not my style.
Hahaha... I have no idea what's going on. Nice music behind the poetry, though
I probably would have scored this one higher if the subject matter was not so cringe. I did enjoy the music and listening to French music makes me feel fancy.
Songs were slow and groovy, I loved how the bass was featured in many of the songs. The concept behind the album felt weak, although the fact that I don't speak French probably didn't help.
Cool little French trip rock/jazz album
Eh... If I like French, I would appreciate it more. Tone and jazz rifts are OK. I know there is some challenges to plot lines
I don’t speak French so i had mixed opinions. The instrumentals were nice but the vocals felt like a cologne commercial, less singing and more spoken word sounding, and it turns out it’s because it’s a narrative. Double twist is the narrative could alternately be titled “Ode to Pedophilia”… wack
Such a shame because the music is actually pretty good but the vocals and concept are weird and creepy as fuck.
Not quite get it....
Interessante mix, rock, strijkers en hijgstem. Oh ja, en ongedefineerd gekrijs.
Ok
My detailed evaluation of this album, step-by-step: ⭐⭐- Two from the beginning for not being from an English country. ⭐⭐⭐- OK, the music is a bit more experimental than I expected, but it's not bad ⭐ - (reading the Wikipedia page and discovering the plot of the album) ⭐⭐- Contextualized with some information regarding Serge Gainsbourg's career and importance for French culture
I can’t listen to this album without thinking it’s a 28-minute perfume commercial, especially the opener “Melody.” Overall this seems like a nice little concept album about a girl named Melody, which we can just get from the title, but I can’t infer much more than that. The instrumentals are pleasant, but to be quite honest I just can’t take the French all that seriously in much anything they do. For some reason I’m imagining Steve Martin stumbling around as the Pink Panther. Oui oui! The only rockers I knew who were running around France in the early seventies were evading the authorities and working on one of the greatest albums of all time: the Stones with Exile on Main Street. Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get an album like that one next.
Rollo.
The album starts off amazing with the first two tracks, but after that it become forgettable and it’s runtime doesn’t feel long enough for the album to be fully developed.
Downside of not speaking french: Not understanding a word of this sonic voyage of a concept album from Serge Gainsbourg. Upside of not speaking french: Not understanding that the concept is just paedophilia and other parts of french culture.
Tres dodgy.
Glad I don't speak French all that well. The subject matter of this album is creepy and gross. The music wasn't terrible though.
music that i didn’t really love and lyrics in a language i don’t really understand. not my thing
Like a French William Shatner.
Some good music, but I'm getting very creepy vibes.
As odd as it gets
Music was ok but it is hard to look past the subject matter
I found this to be so creepy?
+1 for music
Not for me
Sounds like part of the soundtrack of a spy movie that takes place in France. Eh... at least it was short. The other kinda creepy thing was that Serge keep whispering into the mic, "Melody" all throughout and thought it was a bit much. Also WTF was that Maria Menounos laughing in "En Melody"? 4/10.
Well, I do not know French but even if I did I think I would of been bored
Vocal style was super grating. The music wasn't too bad. The subject matter of the album is pretty gross too.
Not pleasant for listening to.
Not really my thing, especially given the context. 🤮
Unless the listener is fluent in French, there probably isn’t much to be gained from listening to this. The melodies (har har) aren’t strong or memorable enough to carry the album on their own.
French
Nothing amazing, some decent melody but not particularly exciting or captivating
Musically quite enjoyable, not too memorable. I don't really care for the french. 3 out of 10
Creepy lush music.
Specielt, fransk 70’er poprock, koncept album, edgy tema
Not for me champ, I'm not avant-garde enough to appreciate the subtleties and nuance of an album about fucking a child.
Is this Ok? I don’t think this is OK.
I think the band is fantastic. However, I can hear Serge's saliva. I don't like that. This album is a danger to me.
I don't understand French. Would this be more enjoyable if I did? I thought the guy singing/talking sounded really creepy most of the time, but the drummer knew what he was doing. I was really enjoying "En Melody" until the girl (Melody, I'm guessing) starting shrieking and laughing like the Nanny.
Well instrumented but undermined by a swampy pointlessness. A disappointing record.
I'm glad this was only 28 minutes long.
Onneksi en jaksa keskittyä kuuntelemaan sanoja. Pointsit siitä, että on vahva teema: Melody Nelson.
4/10 there were some cool things about this, (I liked the guitar parts and song structures) but I didn't care for the vocal performance and I couldn't stop feeling skeeved out by the subject matter.
Tipo una storia, ma non mi convince.
I know he's a bit of a legend and all that, but this one isn't for me.
I feel like someone read a story to me and I didn’t understand a word - since it’s in French. Duh The guitar playing is quite dramatic at times but that doesn’t help me understand the story. Apparently it’s about an old dude with a 15 year old girl. How would that go over at major record companies these days? Back then, it was less than a decade after the film Lolita was released so I guess that taboo was manageable then? If it were a comedy that would help make it marketable. Is it a comedy? I have no way of knowing since, as I previously said, "it’s in French". I think I also previously said "Duh".
I enjoyed the background music quite a bit. I did not appreciate the spoken word whisper style that the artist chose to use. Also the subject matter is gross and fucked up.
Mitä vittua? Jotain taidemusiikkia
https://youtu.be/586WBOVBwS4
mehhh so slow wtf
Melody Nelson, Melody Nelson, Melody Nelson.... Tylsä, toisteinen ja ärsyttävä. Lähellä kuninkuusluokkaa.
No erikoinen, jos ei muuta. Omaan makuun liian taiteellinen
Musically, this is a real 5-star album. But boy do I wish it was about something else! What is it with French artistes and young teens? I won't be able to enjoy revisiting this the way I'd want to.
ok vi fattar du gillar tjajjor
Couldn’t get the entire album.
WTF? I swear in the song Melody it was a beat with someone just being tickled.
Another “very influential” album I have no interest in playing again. Not entirely without interest.
It wasn’t terrible, I just don't know French.
mutmutmut jos ei ymmärrä nii miten voin kuunnella waa waa 'NO VITTU ETSI LYRIIKOISTA KÄÄNNETTY VERSIO JA LUE!!!!!! VITTU OSAAKO HERRA LUKEA!??? AIKA TÄRKEÄ TAITO NYKY MAAILMASSA SAATANA... jahas semmosta lyriikkaa... Lolita-esque... pojo pois syynä pedo... hyi vittu ranskalaiset tän takia vittu olen rasisti, yhtä kansaa vastaan...basso hyvä. tykkään kuiskutus,,, sipsutuksesta,,, aa äs äm är melody
p242. 1971. 2 stars. Well, that was weird. Glad I heard it but not sure I'll revisit it.
Ah, dull whispering french music for horny pretentious students. We didn't need another example that goofy bug eyed weirdos from france have inexplicable sex appeal because we already had Sartre. Sensual and randy as he may be, the album left me untouched.
This isn't a very interesting album to me. I found the first and last song to be particularly boring. I don't mind the music, but it's just not for me. My favourite song was Ballede de Melody Nelson.
Very relaxed. But a bit too "artsy"
This album had some promise, I'm always interested in listening to other country's music, France being one of them since I haven't heard a lot, but this felt a little slow and nothing really happened. I read the wiki and it's supposed to almost be like a story which is cool, but I don't think that makes it worth being on this list.
I didn't mind it w/ no idea what he was saying - Wikipedia tells me it's about his love affair w/ a 15 yr old which I'm not into.
very flowery french pop. I hesitate to call it pop thought because it feels like Gainsbourg scored for a movie in his mind (not a particularly interesting movie either). His spoken word or semi-singing takes away more than it adds to the experience. En Melody is probably the track i enjoyed the most, primarily because it was instrumental. I truly cannot stand Gainsbourg's vocals. I wish he'd stick to composing instead, because it's far more interesting. Actually no! Credit goes to Jean-Claude Vannier more a lot of these arrangements! He did a great job.
The melodies are interesting, but I don't speak a single word of French. I at the very least have a chance of understanding Spanish singing, but there is no way I can get French.
Eh, not really my thing.
the back story is like so creepy and like it was just so no.
Well. That was weird. The music is... kinda funky and fun? It gets a little dull at times with a repetitive progression but is overall short enough to be a fine listen. Can definitely see how parts of this could be sampled (and apparently was) for triphop tracks. But... this isn't creepy nope not at all...: [wikipedia] "....Its narrative follows an illicit romance which develops between the middle-aged narrator and 15-year-old girl Melody Nelson...." uhhh 4/10 2 stars.
Not my thing
Basically a French dude talking into your ear for an hour over some light music. Maybe that’s your thing. Not really for me. Plus, I don’t speak French, so I could be wrong, but I think this guy might have an unhealthy obsession with a chick named Melody.
good background, not excited
Knowing the subject matter I can't help being creeped- out by the singer's voice. I would be interested in reading a translation. Also some of the background music reminds me of some 70s tv shows, which I loved in the day, but upon revisiting I find them cringey! I liked hearing the choir in the background, hearing her laughter made it seem so wrong!
The instrumentation is sparse, and it's been years since I spent time on Duolingo French, so this album doesn't really do much for me. It's not offensive, by any means, but if the focus of this record is going to be the story and lyrics, I need to be able to understand it. Favorite tracks: "Ah Melody"
Sounds alright until you know what it's about and then it's creepy and gross.
This is a tough album for me to comment on (if you know the concept), but if I were to pick some faves, they'd be "Cargo culte" and "L’Hôtel particulier"
super weird. The music is ok, but the whispered "Melody. Melody Nelson"s kinda freaked me out. Also might be better if I understood the words/story. Doubt I'll be revisiting this one.
Noncey
Bit weird for me.
I would like to acknowledge that the album itself certainly defies being slotted into any one genre. It's hard to believe that it came out in the 1970s; something about it seems a lot more current. That said, this album didn't do anything for me. The music might have been more enjoyable as an atmospheric thing, but the spoken-word lyrics sort of took away from that. And the "concept" of the album is unacceptable and disgusting. Just, why?
2, le language gap probably
Definitely would've enjoyed this more if I knew how to speak French. The guitar work is delectably lo-fi and loose throughout the LP, but the spoken-word focus means I found myself waiting out some sections as the narrative part of this concept album took center stage.
Decent beats scattered throughout. Glad I don't speak French so I couldn't understand what I assume to be creepy subject matter.
Good production, decent tunes, just not my flavor.
Interesting but not really for me
It was an uninspiring and not that entertaining of an album. It is all in French. Some of the music was ok. No need to listen.
Miserable headphones listen, his voice is so loud in the mix I can’t enjoy the music. Admittedly I might feel different if I understood French and could tell what he was saying lol
it's alright and it is fucking quickkkkk, but outside of being relatively unique it's not particularly good.
Weird and not in a good way.
Some funky instrumentals, but overall not a fan.
Too odd for me.
Nope
Mike Patton took inspiration here, and I can see it. Very old foreign pop. It was unique, mostly spoken word, then I read about the concept and felt less good about listening.
You're better off exploring the French songs on the "Ocean's Twelve" soundtrack.
Twaddle.
Sometimes, French music in this vein does strike very well for me, capturing a mood of feeling that no other music does. However, this album came across as cheesy and only had a few bright spots in the back end.
5/10
5/10
The orchestration was really interesting. Being French, I had no idea what was going on. If someone wasn't singing, I enjoyed it but when the signing was happening, hard pass.
I appreciate the diversity of this list but this ones not doing it for me
Problematic gaur. Problematic saga. Fín tónlist og vel útfærð. Samt problematic. Ekki hægt að njóta.
Such a strange album this. I really feel that some of the chords in the songs I've 100% heard sampled elsewhere but I can't put my finger on where and I know it's going to drive me crazy now.
Not for me. Maybe it’s my American ignorance not understanding French… the music was cool. Should have been an instrumental album.
French background music
Linhas melódicas e instrumental interessantes e funcionam mesmo com vocal francês.
it's ok
2/5 sadly no
First Listen. Very interesting sounds. Very nice.
It's fine. It's really just a progressive rock album made into a soundtrack. Looking into the lyrics and "concept" of the concept album more made me feel a bit uncomfortable, but overall it was a decent experience. The music element of the album was mainly pretty good rock with some orchestral dramatics thrown in. The storytelling could've been better, but that's probably just because I can't speak French. Favorite track: Valse de Melody
Not so much cup of tea. A bit too much avantgarde.
cool and sultry, but the backstory....yikes
