Again, plenty more fish in the sea mate.
Mellow and atmospheric, but I don't get any big feels from Sinatra. Though I've tried many times, I can't feel any greatness radiating off his music. Just a croony bloke sportin' a hat, and singin' a bit behind the beat .
Levyn musiikki on puhtaasti säestävää, mutta Sinatran tarinointi on vastustamatonta - hymyilyttävää, simplististä, etäisyyttä kunnioittavaa.
-I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOME SINATRA -literally SO excited because i haven’t listened to this album specifically -UGH this first song is so beautifully melancholy -i can’t get over his voice! never ever -loving sinatra in his sad boy era -deep in a dream is one of my favs -i’ve never seen this side of sinatra! (emo boy) -but i am LOVING it -i’m giving it 3 stars because i Love sinatra but this isn’t his best work. and that will be getting four star
It's Sinatra so it will never be awful, but this album was a little too long song-wise. This rating would've been much higher if he could've condensed this to maybe 12 songs.
Just standard Frank Sinatra, *insert 3 star justification here*, 3 stars
Normal
Classic crooning at its best.
Boring and monotonous. Frank Sinatra has a great voice, but this is background music for a dinner party stuff.
Another decent album but when you’ve heard one you’ve heard the majority.
Perfect as background music but for today's age just a bit too little to keep the sole attention
I enjoy some Sinatra from time to time, but this album's not really my thing. Still, he's got a great voice, and I enjoyed the musical arrangements. Outside of movies and live ballets/symphonies/etc, you don't get much orchestra-oriented music these days.
I enjoyed it, I think I wanted to like it more than I did though. Maybe give it another listen sometime soon.
I was bowled over by the title track and started to expect high things from this album. Sadly I was disappointed! The rest is fine, but feels pretty rote, like background music rather than anything interesting. Best track: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning
With every song sounding the exact same there's not enough going on to leave any lasting impression. Very easy listening and something I'd be happy popping on in the background. Fav track: they all the frigging same how could you pick one. 3/5
The driving crooner Too samey all round for me, but badabing, the man can croon! Fave track: Can't We Be Friends?
A fine listen - some clear charm and can easily whisk you away to some olden velvety bar. But all a little samey by today’s standards. Don’t really understand the crowd who are certain this is the best music of all time, but this was still pleasant. Fave track: Deep In A Dream
Earliest album on the list. Not a bad set.
Oh cool! Some Franky! I love the mood he sets. Funny I'd never heard any of these songs before.
Favourite song: Last Night When We Were Young
Good listening. No bangers just some slow dance tunes
pretty good, pretty chill. I'm not the biggest fan of Frank Sinatra but his voice can't be denied.
I thought I was going to love this but it got boring pretty fast. All the songs are fine on their own, but not one after another. ‘In the wee small hours’ was on the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack. It’s a great record.
The arrangements are well done, the mood they set out to achieve seems to have been attained, and I just don't enjoy listening to it. Maybe it's me not being able to relate to the sensibilities of the times, or maybe I just tire of Sinatra's attempts to exude cool sincerity. Whatever it is, the craft is better than my interest in the material.
The idea of Frank Sinatra is cooler than his music. I listened to this as I cooked in the kitchen and thought about my mom who just died. She was of this era though I recall her liking Elvis and Roger Whittaker more than Frank. But she used to dress in fabulous 50s dresses and I let myself try to feel close to the good parts of her as I listened. It was all going fine until Frank hit one of those loud, long notes and I thought...nope this isn't working for me. People rail on Dylan for that kind of business. So it's the nostalgia of Frank and bygone eras that I can dig. Can't we all?
Love Frank Sinatra but there’s nothing crazy special about this album imo
Uhmm Driving crooner
Not all were that great to be honest
Wow! Nice recording for 1955! Mono, but very clear. Very classic sound... not particularly engaging, but a serious mood setter. No big hits or anything, but still would be great chill record to play. Pretty boring, though. Surprising that this is one of 1001, but probably just for historical context being the first 12" released... it's solid. Likely won't be replaying except maybe background music at a swanky cocktail party.
Good but similar to his other stuff
It’s Frank, isn’t it. Hard to hate on Frank.
7/14
Music is too slow for me. I know Frank Sinatra is a hero and a musical legend, but it is not something I would listen to on a frequent basis, as the tempo is just below what I look for in music most of the time
Ava Gardner
Definitely a wee bit of a man being emotional about a woman. Sheesh, he’s like a 1950s man TSwift.
its ok. some lyrics are very beautiful but mostly it's quite the generic frank sinatra sound
Ok
Not for me. I recognize it’s Frank, just not for me
some nice songs here but definitely a downer of an album through and through. frank has a great voice but this whole album isn't for me. favorite songs: in the wee small hours of the morning
An appropriate album- I couldn't sleep and woke up in the wee hours to listen to this. Some writers can tell you the story relationships in a single song. Some of Frank Sinatra's albums do the opposite, just exploring every emotion within the spectrum of post-break up blues he could think of- there's no Pennies from Heaven on this record. Call it melodramatic, call it genius, call it what you will- just don't call your ex after listening to this. Beyond a jazzy trumpet solo on the second half of Ill Wind that stood out- most of this ensemble delivered exactly what was asked- classic Sinatra backing music, with an added sense of longing. The vocal performance is what it's all about, and the lyrics cut through. One particular lyric says it all and is not just one of the best in Sinatra's catalog, but maybe any pop music. A lyric that summarizes the whole album, and is just as relevant today's lonely hearts as it would've been 70 years ago: "What's in store? Should I phone once more? No, it's best that I stick to my tune." -I Get Along Without You Very Well
Eh
Only the title song stuck out a lot to me, but every song was good. Very good for one of the first concept albums, amazing voice, and the songs are pretty relaxing
Perfect crooning. If that's your thing.
Strangely, after yesterday's Everly Brothers, I thought I'd be disliking old Frank here, but I seemed to be in a more receptive mood for this crooning album. On a tangent. It's the first album listed in the 1001 book. Interesting tidbit, it was first issued on a double 10", then later reissued on 12". Which gets me thinking (again) about how much the medium of distribution influences the album arrangement. e.g. This album has 16 tracks, original double 10" release would be 4 tracks on each side, then for the 12" reissue, 8 tracks per side. Would the track listing flow be different if the original distribution was on 12"? Bringing that to modern day, are artists thinking in terms of streaming playlists or maybe still in CD's max 74 mins? No breaks, no flipping over interludes, just straight through. Or maybe they just whack them on in any order, why do I care? Ha!
cool, interesting that it's the first concept album
Good
Revisit when rainy weather/snowfall. Seems to be a mood album that I just don’t understand yet.
Not bad, but kinda blah. Come Fly with Me is a much better album in my limited opinion.
double 10" album format does not stream well, alas
It was fine, I don't really like Frank Sinatra's music and it was hard to sit down and listen to it.
Again, I can't seem to rate these old albums. I understand that they're important, I can appreciate the craft put into this by the artist and yet.. it doesn't really speak to me. I'll put it in the background and won't care about it other than getting a bit of a Christmassy vibe (mind you it is August). I feel pressured into giving it a better rating and I'm getting anxious thinking - what if my kids or grandkids have the same kind of opinions on my favorite albums? Scary
Its good but it all seems to blend into one long song making it become background music fast.
The first emo album? It's Frank, so quality, but doesn't stand out for any particular reason.
Meh. A classic for the reasons everyone knows about but the album as a whole is disappointing and dull.
Not feeling it. I was gonna give this 2* then I read it was one of the first concept albums.
Vocals and arrangements are great. Just a little to one-tempo to grab me.
Incredible voice, absolutely amazing to listen to in the background of a romantic movie scene, but sadly not pleasant to listen to on its own. The old-school cadence and sentence structure makes it feel like I'm listening to non-stop ad libs, and the volume varies WILDLY withing a single sentence. Frank could be halfway through a lullaby and suddenly starts shouting the 5th word, shaking you out of your slumber ... just odd. Gorgeous voice, great effort, but a 3/5 for me.
It was good, but i know theres such better work by Frank Sinatra that this feels somewhat of a let down after i saw it come up on the site.
The music is pretty lovely and the lyrics are oh so incredibly bleak. All feels very samey though, and never been enough to keep me engaged throughout the album
Frank Sinatra's voice is so silky smooth and the songs very pleasant to listen to; I feel that this album would make a good soundtrack on a cold rainy day. I didn't find it particularly memorable, but I did listen to this in the airport so may need to give it another shot. 3/5.
3.5
Lättsamt men inte jättebra. Blir nog en trea ändå.
Not for me - this is “sad romance” Frank, and I’m more of a “Rat Pack” Frank.
Altså. Det lyder jo godt. Som album bliver det godt nok lidt kedeligt i længden, måske især fordi man kender så mange af disse 'standarder' som så her alle får den samme 'tone'..
Chill, romantic sad-boi music
Yes, it's Sinatra but after almost an hour of singing about heartbreak, you kind of wish he had gone to therapy instead. If you need lounge background music this might work.
Obviously a great set of pipes on Sinatra but the pace of this was all off and just didn’t keep my interest.
Jazz. Soul. Aburridísimo
50 minutes of the same song sung over and over again. Sinatra is such a boring singer. He has a high quality voice but this album doesn't show that. It's just boring songs repeated over and over again. 2.5/5
I loved this but I'm a sucker for a good voice. Whether it has a set of songs is a different debate.
In one of his earliest albums Sinatra manages to cement himself as an iconic voice with his command and tenor. His easy crooning make it that much more inviting as you sink into the experience of smooth instrumentations and sweeping lyrics punctuated by something truly sincere in his voice.
Nice easy listening but none of the classic songs
Almost all frank sinatra music is good. However some of it feels more dated than others and especially when the songs are all in the same realm. This album is a very niche style and has its drawbacks of being too slow and repetitive at times. Frank shines best with his excellent song writing, but a whole album of sad love songs is tough to stomach from any artist. Not terrible but hard to love. 6.2/10
No bangers. But his voice. His voice.
Look, I have nothing against this album. But by today's standards...it's quaint. There isn't much showmanship. Frank didn't write his own songs. It's just a fella doing crooner karaoke. The songs are lovely and easy listening, but it just doesn't move me the way I'm told that it should.
Smooth
Þetta er ágætt m.v. a) tímann sem þetta kom út, og b) það að þetta er Frankie. Hann er ekki orðinn pirrandi í krúninu sínu þarna.
Go listen to Tony Bennett and Bill Evans for what “wee small hours” desperation should sound like. This is seriously overrated and mostly a snoozefest – showing every fatal flaw and weakness of the era (and FS in particular). Unbearably schmaltzy at times and unconvincingly dramatic, the arrangements are overdone and strings syrupy and sentimental. Yes, his voice is strong, but vaguely nasal and highly controlled and structured; there’s zero fluidity to it on this record. Maybe he’s taking the titular concept literally, but on a few cuts (“Can’t We Be Friends” and “I’ll Be Around”), Frank sounds on the verge of nodding off. There's no humor or hipness to this at all, just Frank taking himself too seriously and pandering to the people.
This was a little dreary. I preferred the one a little while ago with more "swinging" tunes.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning (1) 2 - This Love Of Mine (16) 3 - When Your Lover Has Gone (8)
Sounds exactly like I expected. Along with a few other 50s albums here, this is just too old to judge. I don't have a frame of reference for it - it's like music changed completely at some point just afterwards. But it's pleasant enough, I guess. 3/5.
PREFS : In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, Mood Indigo, Glad to Be Unhappy, Can't We Be Friends?, I'll Be Around, Dancing on the Ceiling MOINS PREF : When Your Lover Has Gone
Not my favourite Sinatra album, it’s a bit slow.
Special thing
Impressive that I can imagine myself tuning in to this music (and already have) even if I wouldn't say it's my genre, it's just good.
He’s got a great voice, but for whatever reason it was never my very favorite. Some nice arrangements of these ballads, though.
I can't really give an accurate rating for this album. I didn't enjoy it. The songs all sounded so similar and vague to me. There was a time a while ago that I listened to quite a bit of Sinatra. It was mostly 1960's music though. I guess I never really explored this far back in time. It's different. But I did love Sinatra at one point in my life and one thing I learned is that the best thing about a Sinatra song for me is timing. As in the moment and mood in which it is played. There could be a time when I hear the beauty of this album, but I'm not there right now. I feel bad doing a two star, so I'll just make it three and set it on the fence hoping to get back to this one day. But I have like 1000 other albums to hear before I die, so ... It could be a four or a two, I just wasn't in the mood for this today.
Not my favourite Sinatra album by any means. Very moody and slow. Downloaded one song.
I get it, nice album, nice voice, sounds lovely...but Frank was just a shitty person and makes you realize he doesn't represent a singly value of most of these songs. Having said that, 2 a.m. at a bar in December with this playing is some great ambience. But fuck Frank Sinatra. 5 stars for the musicians, songwriters and talent. 0 stars for Frank. Average. 2.5.
This is lounge music for me. Soft singing, mellow instrumentals and overall very chill. It's something you have on in the background that doesn't distract you from the social gathering you're at and you can focus on the conversation.
Frank Sinatra is always good. But there is only so much of the same sounding music I think you can have in one record before it gets boring.
This is when music albums started looking like what we know an album to look like. Some would even say it's the first concept album. It's good, revolutionary in certain aspects, very standard when it comes to music. The album can feel a bit long as most of the songs are pretty similar both melodically and thematically.
Amazed to learn this is commonly regarded as the first concept album.
I can appreciate the importance, but I'd not listen to it again
Kærlighed og den gode Frank-vokal, meget indflydelsesrigt, måske lidt kedeligt
Guy's got an amazing and iconic voice, no doubt. Tons of respect for his natural talent. I don't mind having this on in the background, but I am truly so bored by crooning. This album feels like one long unending ballad and that schtick got old by the third track. The lyrical content is just too old-fashioned and sappy. Imagine if Sinatra had been of a time where he could actually sing about shit that was personal and meaningful to him? Not just this heavily manufactured and trite gentleman lover Jell-O pudding.
It's Frankie. He's great but the sad songs do get very repetitive.
Reminds me of a 50s movie soundtrack. Kind of chill. Obviously great vocals.
Good, sad Sinatra, but the songs are indistinguishable from each other.
Incredible voice, obviously. Sounds like the soundtrack to the saddest episode of Tom and Jerry. 5/10. An extra star for sinatras voice.
S'écoute bien, pas vraiment surpris de ce qu'il y avait sur l'album, ça sonne comme le Sinatra que je connais.
Miellyttävää ja toimii hyvin taustamusana.
I think this is the oldest album on the list. It’s from 1955. Obviously, I’ve heard of big Frank, but was surprised that I don’t recognise any song names. I’m hopeful for this one. I have a soft spot for big band music. Songs I already know: none Favourite after listening: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning Overall: 6/10 I can’t fault the composition, the running theme throughout of sadness and depression, or even the crooning vocals. However, it’s just not for me. And that’s ok! Nothing can please everybody. I’m not the biggest jazz/swing fan, but the songs that I do like have more bombast. Would be a good album to have a cry to after a breakup.
Very nice
Rainy afternoon, late night music. Not my usual, but it's Sinatra - it can't be bad. Still, it won't be something I listen to often.
Not a terrible album; in fact each song is pretty good. When you put all 16(!) of them together, though, it’s pretty monotonous.
Speravo fosse più interessante. Un po' troppo natalizio
I love slow songs.
Soothing, warm, welcoming voice. This is the first album by him that I have ever listened to. Playing and instrumentation reminds me of old Disney movies as well as any movie or TV show from the 50s. Considered to be one of the first concept albums, which I enjoy, especially The Wall of course.
vibes but outkast solos
Poor old Frank is feeling love lorn and miserable with these songs. Arguably the first ever concept album, Frank isn't swingin' here. He's "bluer than blue can be" - some of the arrangements though feel quite upbeat. The only issue here is that none of the songs really stand out. They all start to blend in to one another. Pour yourself a whiskey, turn down the lights and siiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhhh. Best Tracks: In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning; Can't We Be Friends?; This Love of Mine
2.5 I think the fallout games have given me a huge appreciation for vocal jazz of this era. I love Frankie’s voice which sounds awfully redundant because like, that’s what he’s known for but I don’t think it’s for nothing. It was cool to hear a Frank Sinatra album that wasn’t a compilation or live album. I especially like the particular way he sang about the subjects he was singing about, nuanced and emotional. Some parts didn’t age especially well but others very much did.
3.5 "In the Wee Small Hours" has to be one of the most well-suited names for an album I've heard... I'm not entirely sure what it means, but Frank Sinatra manages to capture what it feels like on this record. The underlying forlorn tone makes me feel like I'm doing it wrong by listening at 2 PM while working and not at night with an old fashioned or some kinda rat pack-esque cocktail. This is definitely another case of "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts" for me, where I would likely give the entire album a listen before seeking out individual tracks, but in this instance, it's much more of an "in the mood" record. I can't really fault it for that though, cause it kind of outlines that right there in the title. So, I could definitely see myself re-listening when the wee small hours are upon me... probably not midday again. Favorite songs: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, Mood Indigo, Glad to Be Unhappy
Good, solid old school blues and jazz, drags a bit, but sets relaxing mood.
An iconic and legendary voice and performer. This album was really cool to listen to. It was nice to listen to some of his lesser known songs.
I understand the historical importance of this album for the music industry and the culture as a whole, but it's not a good one. Sinatra has some very classical songs on his voice, and none are in this specific record.
it sounds good, but it also sounds sad. I don't know how to rank this!
It sets a mood. Nice to listen to while relaxing with a drink at the the end of a long day.
Never Listened to a whole Frank album from front to end. It's a lot. I like to sprinkle Frank in between the 4 tops and Sammy Davis and Dean Martin.
It was so strange listening to Frank and it wasn’t Christmas time.
Cantor standard em execução admirável
It's interesting that these songs are all similar in style. Probably the first "concept album," as wikipedia stated. Honestly, I don't like blanketing all of the albums as concept albums. In my head, I consider a concept album something more grandiose. But, I guess you have to start somewhere. <shrugs> Honestly, as I was listening to the album, at first I was intrigued that Sinatra was putting all of those type of songs together. You really don't get a lot of acts thinking "let's put all of these type of songs together so that they sound the same," but that's where we are. And it's not like it's a bad thing that they sound similar, as opposed to acts who have a specific sound and they can't vary it so that the songs sound different. Frank's music on the album does vary somewhat. However, "In the Wee Small Hours" is right. Because as I was listening to it, I kept thinking that a lot of the music sounded like something I would listen to to drift off to sleep to. Not necessarily BAD, but not the best to say it's "great music to fall asleep to."
Unimpressed. Yes, Sinatra can croon but this is just a bunch of sad love songs. So kudos to his great voice but sorry if I'm not impressed by this "concept" in his concept album. There's no connection between the songs other than they're lovelorn and they have a similar sound. I wondered if I was missing something so I listened to the next album on the list - a George Jones tear jerker. It only hardened my resolve - Jones and Sinatra's albums are same shit different day. Sinatra has a better voice but Jones is a better musician. Kudos to both for a well-coordinated set of sad songs. But that's it.
Classical frank
Meh.
Not my type of music Didn't mind it though
It's good, but have to be in the right mood - very mellow but beautiful.
From a historical perspective, it's interesting that this Sinatra release started the LP revolution. I recall interviews with Kieth Richards and other big stars from the 60s and they used the term "record" to refer to a single rather than a 12 inch. (They call a 12 inch an LP). Since my vinyl buying started in the early 70s, I never bought 45s and never understood why someone would buy one. I thought of it to be the same as buying a six pack of beer; why not get a case? I suppose we have come full circle since Spotify allows us to "buy" just the single and ignore the other songs on an LP. I'm not sure which LP has the most copies sold (and I don't want to know since it would probably make me noxious) but that record will likely stand for decades given the new buying trends. Now to Frankie's LP. I have said many times that I don't like pop, but this isn't accurate. I like Frankie's pop. I like it a lot more than the tunes on this LP. His voice is amazing; I get it - but give us some songs that move. When the album ended, Spotify segued to his cover of Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin". Now that's the Frankie I like.
He has a really nice sound, but everything did sound very samey to me. No particular track stood out, and nothing really made me want to re-listen.
I like Frank but I didn't think this was one of his best.
‘Twas fine. It could’ve used some switch up in terms of style since after a while they all seem to blend into each other, but I guess that is partially the nature of the genre as well. 5/10
I have often contemplated making the effort to be a Sinatra fan, but this is actually the first Sinatra album that I have ever listened to. The voice is delightful, but I think that there are probably other albums that I would have liked more.
I’ve never been much for Sinatra, but I do love Nelson Riddle. As expected I love the arrangements and music on this. I’m not into Frank’s voice and I’m not exactly sure why. I just couldn’t stop wanting someone else singing these songs. Strange to have this feeling when I know I should be thinking otherwise… His influence on modern music is undeniable and these songs are great. Still I don’t see a Frank Sinatra fan club in my future. It’s unlikely this will be something I revisit.
Sad bastard music sung by Sinatra beautifully. Trite lyrics and the orchestration is a bit too similar, but if you're in that mood, it's great.
songs of heartbreak and loss. I had high hopes for this album; I've liked the Frank Sinatra I've heard in Fallout, and I love concept albums. overall it had a really warm, nostalgic sound to it, but it was a little too samey for my tastes. its still good background noise though
some albums on this list are going to be weirdly difficult for me to rate and experience because of how culturally omni present they are. this is an example of one of those album. it's obviously lovely but i just can't get in to it.
I appreciate he has a silky voice. I understand that he has a corking songwriter, and the calibre of both the instrumentals the production are sky high. But it is Frank Sinatra. He can be nothing but the epitome of cliche crooning.
Identifying mellow Sinatra : it’s mellow Sinatra
2 Sinatra albums within a week! Wild how these patterns pop up on such a huge list. This album is straight slow, sad ballads. Got very one-note after a while. And none of these are "the hits". BUT EEEEHH ITS FRANKIE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO FORGETABBOUT IT? WHERE AM I GONNA PUT THESE CANNOLIS? I LOVE LISTENING TO MY BOYS THE RAT PACK WHILE I EAT MY GABAGOOL
Very standard nice Sinatra fare - a bit of a whiny incel sometimes though.
Fine as quiet background music. Nothing here grabs me and makes me pay attention. I don’t think it’s bad, just not my kind of music.
3.5 Stars. The good think about Frank Sinatra is you know what to expect in his music. The bad thing about his music is that you already know what to expect.
fine.
Frank Sinatra has a great voice and I do love his work but this is largely back ground music. Go listen to some Chet Baker or even better Sammy Davis Jr instead
Um álbum descontraído e agradável, muito característico e inconfundível, contudo, isto pode ser uma faca de dois gumes. As músicas são muito semelhantes entre si. Honestamente não é bem algo que me chame muito a atenção Nota:6/10
I can see why this is on the list, thinking of how towering a figure he is in American culture. While the arrangements and recordings are exquisite, as a matter of personal taste I can only take so much of Frank Sinatra at once. I don't seek out his music; that being said, I understand why his voice is considered so good and I can appreciate the work.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed by this album, which is basically just a collection of standards. Essential if you're into Sinatra, but otherwise...maybe not. Best track: Ill Wind
Some nice tunes. You could argue that there’s nothing wrong with it, but that’s not really a compliment, is it? 3.25
Fine. One of the greatest voices ever. 6/10
A pleasant mood
Very Sinatra
A real contemplative album, just as the title suggests. Dancing on the Ceiling, Last Night When We We’re Young stood out on the first listen. Overall needs a little more swing for my tastes.
j’ai pris la liberté de m’endormir sachant que je l’avais déjà écouté
Ukolla kiva soundi, mutta levyllinen tätä kerta-annoksena on jo turhan hapokasta. Aika ajanut tyylistä ohi jo jokunen päivä sitten? Ei silti ihan paska :)
Saved Prior: None* [I have a live version of a medley containing It Never Entered My Mind saved which I like better ('The Girl That Got Away/It Never Entered My Mind' off his 'World on a String' live album). Check it out, it's better than any song on this album tbh.] Off Rip: In The Wee Small Hours Of Hours The Morning, Mood Indigo, I'll Never Be The Same Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I appreciate that he made arguably the first sad boy hours album. I also count myself as a Sinatra fan. I can also also admit to myself that this album is eh. It feels a bit static, which makes sense on a conceptual level given the themes of the album but doesn't make it a terribly enjoyable listen.
I actually rather enjoyed this
I can hear where Tom Waits has gotten much inspiration on his slower songs on this concept album by Sinatra But an album full of this gets quite monotonous to me, even though his voice is absolutely stunning and the music is great.
Frank is nostalgic of my grandparents’ house, which are all lovely memories. However I had a hard time listening to the whole album.
I hate to rate Sinatra this low, but all these songs are basically the same. There's nothing upbeat or peppy but maybe that's the point. It's sweet and smooth and languid and would 100% put me to sleep.
Love Frank's voice and this album is very soothing though it could use a bit more variety
This made we want to play Fallout again. I've heard Frank Sinatra a lot before but never listen to a full album. It's not really for me but was still enjoyable to listen to.
A good album to wind down to.
good sinatra album, i guess the album as a whole is better than each song individually
Well, it's Sinatra. Mr. Santa himself i guess. Pleasant surprise for the christmas time (writing this on December 16th) :) It doens't impress me that much, but it also wasn't bad either. Nice and chill listen overall. :)
It’s always fine to get a warm caress from Frank Sinatra’s voice.
frank is one of those guys whose whole vibe, while perfectly encapsulating the era - somehow both a product of the time and a driver of it - just...isn't so much for me. his voice is just about perfect, and i can absolutely see myself, had i been born a 60s suburbanite housewife, swooning over it. but...i wasn't born to that life, and in my own world, that whole thing, of lounge singers, and the pack, and vegas and whatever else...it just edges riiight up against that 70s smarm that just rubs me the wrong way. that said, this album is an easy way to pass the time, and it's hard to find real fault, beyond it just being for someone who isn't me.
I really struggle to know why this Sinatra album is on vs any other. It's fine but it's all a bit samey to me , at least it played round Christmas
The earliest album in the 1001 Albums series, heralding from a distant and mysterious place in music. Rock and roll had only just started to hit the charts, the Les Paul guitar had barely been on sale, the British Invaders were putting in the hours at school and most punk rockers hadn't been born. The standards covered by Sinatra here are even older, dating back through the 1930s to 1929 (Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love"). Almost nobody alive will recall these songs in their infancy, through early performances and Broadway recitals: they have simply endured through the years to become relics of a halcyon era. To many people of my generation, the swelling strings, mellow mood, jazz inflections and signature croon are associated with "grandparent music", "Christmassy fireside tunes", all cigar smoke and black-and-white romance. Years of pop culture association has worked its charm, and I couldn't escape those feelings either: "In The Wee Small Hours" has become an album that feels so distinctly and charmingly old, mature, sentimental. Adding to this association is the emotion and tone of the songs themselves. The album is often labelled as one of the first concept albums: what it lacks in narrative or musical motifs, it certainly makes up for by casting a singular mood and emotion. Every song is bathed in washes of melancholic blue light as if to match the classic image on the cover. This approach works to the album's credit as well as to its detriment: the mood is so lethargic that in the wrong mood it can become a huge drag, each song merging into the other in an indistinguishable mass. The lagging tempo aside, there is some lovely, lush instrumentation here: from the simplicity of the piano led "Glad to Be Unhappy" to the bombastic climax of "Last Night When We Were Young" (the most animated things get). Almost every song is soaked in luscious strings and muted brass, while the celesta has some standout moments. As well as a lovely refrain in "I'll Be Around", I give top marks for its delicate use in the first verse of "I Get Along Without You Very Well", mimicking the raindrops on leaves referenced in the lyrics. On top of all that is the obvious centrepiece, Sinatra's vocal. Eloquent, considered, and dazzling: he mines the depths of heartbreak with such beautiful intonation and feeling. It speaks for itself, so I'm not going to sit around trying to write about why Frank Sinatra has a good voice. All in all, this album is exquisitely performed and arranged. It needs to be heard in full to be "got", and it has to be said that my enjoyment of it would rest on how I was listening. If I can get past the "mood music" prejudice I have, its rating might come to increase by its hundredth birthday. Long may it live.
Sort of bland, especially knowing he didn't write any, or at least many, of his own songs.
Good but makes me sleepy
The best part of this album was roasting it with Honor. Lowkey every song sounded the same but I think that was the point? It's supposedly the first concept album. Makes sense. The concept of this one was being a SIMP. 3/5
Frank is always great
3. It's Frank, legendary voice. Though an entire album of his songs back to back is like ordering an entire dozen of donuts and then realizing this is way too much of a good thing all at once.
This was a pleasant album but it's not going to set anyone's world on fire. I didn't feel like there were any stand-out tracks. It's a work meant to be taken as a whole because it's regarded as the first 'concept-album' where there's a thematic link between all the tracks for the first time ever, rather than just a disparate collection of songs. That's a good touch but I just couldn't say I loved it.
Couldn't face Sepultra for my early dog walk so jumped to next album - Frank! I know loads of Sinatra, but an entire album? Nope. This felt like a Xmas album. It was lovely-like being stroked by a hot chocolate with Baileys.
It's good, but a bit dated
A non-christmas album that sounds like Christmas.
Frank Sinatra is good, but very much not my thing. I prefer for the music to take more of a leading role and the singer to add emphasis to the music rather than being the driver of the song. It's a personal preference thing, and I acknowledge that. I did like the latin Sinatra album I got previously on this list, but these songs mostly sound the same to me. Not bad, just not for me 3/5
Un nouvel album soporifique de la part du chouchou de robpanière, j'ai en effet eu le temps de faire trois siestes malgré comme vous le savez une nuit de sommeil de très bonne qualité derrière moi.
its classic Sinatra but none of his best stuff 3.5
Frank was a good way to start the day, dude is emo as fuck.
Definitely Frank Sinatra, lots of mournful songs about love with an orchestral backing. These days doesn't seem like much but he has a great voice and I know the impact he had on music. Good album, a bit on the melancholy side though.
A lovely album. Of its time and like Ray Charles, would be better appreciated on vinyl. Very nostalgic feels to this but doesn’t feature any of his obvious classics. Still a good album with nice ambient tones. Love his voice and the big band feels.
No one's jumping out of their chair to change stations on the wireless when a Sinatra song comes on. He's universally loved. However, this one's a little tricky to rate because it depends on the context. If I'm sitting in an armchair on Christmas Eve, looking out the window and the snow starts to fall as I take a sip of whiskey - this album is getting 4.9 stars. Easily. But for everyday listening, this isn't making it into my rotation so it has to get a 3. Enjoyed listening to many of the non-hits for a change. Great album, it's clear why he's up there with the all time big band singers like Seth MacFarlane.
A lot of Frank singing songs about losing love. I wasn't really familiar with any of these before. Good if you're feelin' blue and want to wallow in it.
It's frankie
This was first time listening to Frank Sinatra. Liked it over all
I've heard this a few times now and it creeps under your skin after a while. You can hear Sinatra's world weary voice cracking at times as he makes his way through the songs. The arrangements are subtle and delicate and really compliment Sinatra. Nice for late night listening.
Sleepy album about him during a break up and into single life
Sinatra’s talented but these crooners just aren’t for me
solid, classic
I like Frank when he's singing from a lonely place, and the arrangements to these songs really help him sell the sentimental melancholy. It doesn't all work, and a few tracks could have been cut, but I still enjoyed wallowing with Frank for an hour. (Sidenote, his take on I "Get Along Without You" is nowhere near Chet Baker's brilliant version.) Fav Tracks: What Is This Thing Called Love? and In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.
Sinatra is really a master of his craft and his talents are on full display here. I appreciate his quieter moments better than the bombast, especially on the opening track. At the same time, I found this record, as a whole, to be pleasant, but kind of forgettable. Favourite track: “Last Night When We Were Young”
Pleasant singing voice and the music sounds nice in the background. I definitely didn't mind it playing, but there's nothing about it that might hold my attention. Probably great to have playing while trying to fall asleep.
Not for me.
The very first album in the book! Frank Sinatra did us a lot of favors by being a workhorse, namely bringing "the LP" as it were to everyday households. The music itself is very low-key, mellow, just plain ol' sad. Perfect for "the wee small hours of the morning", but kind of makes me sleepy. Shoutout to Sinatra's backing band, they nail the performance here.
An album I never expected to like. Never really looked into his music. But really atmosferic. An eye-opener.
Very good but all quite similar.
Mmmm it's nice.. relaxing, but all the songs sound the same and are about the same thing! Quite boring
In the words of Jav “this reminds me of old people and Christmas”. 3/5
Taki klasyczny glos, a ja kojarze go glownie z swiatecznego jingla o sniegowaniu, wiec jest to pierwszy sinatrowy album jaki slyszalem, a uslyszalem kompilacje mocno sadge kawalkow zaspiewanych w jazzowych araqnzacjach, nie jakis murzynski jazzik, tylko taki ultra klasyczny wybielowy swingowy rodzaj jazzu jaki mozna grac, ale nie jest to dziwne, bo wszystkie kawalki poza tytulowym in the wee small hours of the morning pochodza z wielkiej ksiegi hamerykanskiego spiewactwa XX wieku, czyli cos jakby ksiega miar i wag co masz spiewac i jak zeby byc "hamerykanski", ale twistem w tym albumiku jest to ze sinatra wybral jedynie najbardziej sadgowe utwory, wiec stworzyl albumik koncepcyjny, cos na tamte czasy iscie rewlucyjnego muzycznie, czuje ze instrumentale nie sa na tym samym poziomie co wokal tego albumika, na plejaka leci tytulowy kawalek i i will never be the same
Frank is fine.
Iconic voice
Simple. Calming. Plain
It was good. I definitely enjoyed it. It was a little repetitive, but I honestly don’t really mind. Would probably give a 3.5 if possible, but it didn’t do enough for me to give it a 4.
mellow. coffee house-like music.
I can see the cigarette smoke filled rundown Jazz bar I wish I was in when I listen to this and I love that.
A classic no doubt, though I like Frank's swinging stuff more, this was pretty downtempo.
Kind of depressing
A little boring, but also sad
1:00 AM: "What is this thing called love?" "I have a new 1001 album today, let's listen", and it's apropos for all the reasons I hate to admit. Scene: Post-cocktail party. Swap stories. Has-beens of what-could-have-beens. And time grew cold. Fuck you Sinatra, but you got me 5 drinks deep, you win with your candor and forward lyrics. I can only laugh how piercing your earnestness is, I hate it and also respect it. Some sort of party-bus went by during my walk, I wanted on but also want to leave it be. I mentioned to the driver "What a night!" and he chuckled as the passengers took selfies outside to remember (or delete in the morning). I'm just a tourist here, keep, moving. And recollect. Did I mention I'm laughing? I'll be around, from now on. I Goodbye again. Now and then, drop a line. Let's get "serious", this was a perfect post-party walk around the block sad-nostalgic-I'm-getting-older sort of mood. Normally listening I'd fucking hate this shit, but in this very specific mood-very specific time it really worked. Unfortunately all the songs sound about the same though. 3*
Kind of beautiful and kind of boring. Made me feel like a ciggie
foi bom pro clima chuvoso
Its fine
Good break up songs
Ol Frank songs to chill and fall asleep to. Work environment didn’t help my engagement
I heard something very close to what I expected. Sinatra's voice is familiar of course. It's like a warm but thin blanket: It won't hold up to a lot, but that's not what it's for. Its function as a sad album is the most interesting part of the record. There's a double disconnect: First, between the lyrics and moderately upbeat (to modern ears) compositions, and second, between the subject matter and Frank's impeccably smooth delivery (the affect seems not to quite match). He's most uncomfortable during the more-actually-jazzy sections.
1955. Key Songs: Mood Indigo, What Is This Thing Called Love
Banging album cover, especially for that time, I think that's the thing I enjoy most about this album. I'm sure that for that time period this was more interesting, but it's just not something I'd deliberately listen to. Does Frank Sinatra deserve to be on this list? A thousand percent. Does this album specifically deserve to be on this list? I have no idea. When I saw 1955, I thought huh his first album made it on this list but then I read the wiki and WHAT do you mean this is his NINTH ALBUM?? AND HE HAS FIFTY-EIGHT OTHER ALBUMS?? I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to Sinatra or the 50s in general, not because I'm in my 20s, but because I'm not American. During these times my country was under the communists, so you basically had to risk your life to listen to this stuff. Hence this genre/period doesn't have any influence, it doesn't bring any memories, it's not like I would be going to my grandma when I was little and hear this album blasting cuz it was never a sensation here. I'm saying this cuz I feel like some of the people who rate this highly only do so due to nostalgia or memories with older relatives they have surrounding this album. To be completely honest, this is the first time I've ever even heard this album. I didn't know any song on it. It mainly reminds me of Tom and Jerry cuz it sometimes had this jazzy music in the background. That being said, I feel like I've just listened to a reaaally long song. I got quite bored, actually. At least the songs are short.
A bit somber and sad for my tastes. Made me feel like a noir detective who’s been left by everyone he’s ever loved but remains poetic
it feels so bad to give /frank sinatra/ a 2 but this just isn't very good. it's the same song about being sad 16 times.
Not the best from frank
really insipid
4/10
This album's sometimes reputation of being the first concept album is overshadowed by its tedious pacing. There is definitely a thematic connection here, with its focus on heartbroken nights. But there's basically no variety musically to be found. Every song is slow and rather empty, with subtle, swaying strings occasionally punctuated by horns or sharp strings. Sinatra's vocals, which are of course great, are the driving force, and it's hard to tell that the songs have different melodies at all. The lyrics are carefully crafted and evocative, but even there the theme kind of gets worn out by the end. On their own every song is very good, but fifty minutes of them is too much to listen to in one sitting.
I dabble in Sinatra every now and then and generally enjoy his music. This album disappointed me a bit. Sure, his voice is great, but there isn't much else going for it. The album is too long, the songs are too similar, and the arrangements are a bit boring. Compared with one of my favourite albums in the same genre, The Genius of Ray Charles, the shortcomings become very obvious. On that record, the band breathes, the solos are lively and engaging, and each song has its own distinct character. Strong 2
Sinatra undoubtedly has a good voice, but these songs are just so boring to me that it holds it back. Music can't be carried by vocals alone, and while the instrumentals are often pretty, they aren't enough.
Part of me thinks that this album would be better at night because the first two tracks are great. Part of me also thinks that this album, while containing the talented vocal prowess of Sir Sinatra, is a huge drag. I listened at 9am, I like the swing stuff better...I don't care, I'm making my pick (6/10, 2/5 on this scale)
snore. he’s obviously so talented but nothing stood out, and got tired of sad yearning boy lyrics.
You either like Frank Sinatra, or you were born after 1950. I was born after 1950.
Though he has a great voice and I like sad music, I felt virtually nothing throughout this.
2/5 - Music used to be so much more performative. Ol' Blue Eyes as a sad bastard? Riiight. This just puts me to sleep.
It's definitely not the best of Sinatra.
Music to fall asleep to, my god that was pretty boring. Let’s face it if that was released in the modern era we’d be laughing at the lyrics. Sinatra just got in there first cos there was like 10 songs out, most sound the same with no variety.
Snoozefest...beautiful but a snoozefest
He has a great voice, but this just felt like one very long and boring heartbreak song and it was pretty much a snooze fest. Mix it up a little, Frank!
2 - not for me
I had a tough time with this. It felt like an hour of the same song.
I know people love this guy’s voice. I’ve just never felt the attraction. Meh. And damn the pacing is slow! This isn’t a Sinatra album I would have chosen for this list.
My dad has decided that Frank Sinatra and the rest of the rat pack are the perfect dinner music. Honestly, I don’t disagree; it does make for a pleasant dining experience. As an album though, this started to get a bit tedious by the end. It’s not bad and Frank is incredibly cool, but it just all starts to sound the same. My wife just mentioned that she keeps expecting each song to be a Christmas song.
I’ve loved the title track for a long time, but this album is a slog. It’s long and slow and I just don’t have much stamina for long slow jazz crooning.
The music is well done, Sinatra's voice is great, but the sum is less than the parts. Maybe I am biased by the David Faustino of the 90s when dorks tried to make the Rat Pack cool, but this album makes me really appreciate Chuck Berry and Little Richard even more.
Синатра конечно очень влиятельный в музыке. Но альбому уже более 70лет. Как же тяжело было слушать час однотипных любовных терзаний
Second Frank Sinatra album and I remain underwhelmed. Sure the guy’s got a great smooth voice but what else?
I struggled with this one because I know Frank Sinatra is one of the best singers to have ever lived, but this just doesn’t do it for me unfortunately
Great voice, but 50 minutes of sad crooning over basic 50s instrumentals is difficult to get through. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Nah mate.
Bit low energy for me.
moyen bof même
Désolé Frank, t'as une super voix mais on se fait chier...
I am aware of the existence of Frank Sinatra and prior to listening to this already have 6 songs by him liked on Spotify - but none from this album. It looks like this is the oldest album on this list - so curious to see how this goes. Thoughts while listening ... 1st time through ... ---------------------- I kept thinking that at least one of the songs would pop out at me as something I've heard before - just by being alive on this planet for 60 years. But apparently, even though this is considered one of his greatest albums, it didn't have any songs that have lasted in public consciousness (or at least mine). I figured one of them would have been in movies or tv shows or just generally played over and over again. Reading more on Wikipedia, I can see some of these have been in many movies / TV shows - but I guess they didn't register with me. I knew Sinatra didn't write songs - but it just really hit me reading how for this album he chose songs from the "Great American Songbook" to match his mood/theme for this album. What was radio like back in the day?? Were you just constantly listening to new performances of songs you've already heard many times before by many other artists? Probably need to ask my dad about this! I never though of Sinatra as "jazz" - was surprised to see the Wikipedia article call it "one of the best vocal jazz releases of all time." I think of jazz as much more improvisational with complex rhythms and melodies - more like a jam band. I guess I just don't understand what jazz is then if this is considered jazz. 2nd time through... ---------------------- "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" - is good. Sets the mood for the album. "Mood Indigo" - also pretty good. "Can't We Be Friends" - fun to see the concept of being "friend zoned" has been a thing probably forever. More modernish example -> "Friend is a Four Letter Word" by Cake :) "What is This Thing Called Love" - this one stuck out to me for the different arrangement - with the trumpet (I think, maybe clarinet??) featured prominently over the top of the background orchestra. "Last Night When We Were Young" - thought the lyrics for this were cool - pointing out how when something is over - even though it was not over yesterday it starts to feel like forever ago. "Dancing on the Ceiling" - lyrically, a more unique way to express the same thing he's been expressing the whole album - which is that he misses the girl. 3rd time through... ---------------------- Frank is definitely a good singer and the music seems good for what it is. Did they not have drums back in the day?? Cool that this is basically the first concept album. The concept was "I am sad and lonely because my girl dumped me". Also cool that it really got the ball moving with 12" LPs. That was the standard way to listen to music when I was a kid - so I guess I have Frank to thank for popularizing and showing what was possible with this format. I'm not sure I will ever sit down and listen to this whole thing in one sitting. The bummed out, sad and lonely mood of all of this get's to be a little much after 16 songs. I guess Ava Gardner must have really crushed him. BUT I did end up liking the 6 songs mentioned above. So now I have doubled my Frank Sinatra songs that will show up on my automated playlists. Progress! Liked songs on Spotify: 6/16 Rating: 2/5
Not my favorite. Every song sounded exactly the same. I do love Frank Sinatra but I got so bored with this one.
50 minutes of the same bland love songs, one after the other...
Impressive but dull
A melancholic vocal jazz-pop album filled out with orchestral arrangements. A consistent emotive tone largely focused on love lost. He’s certainly a great vocalist - smooth and cool. Well arranged and performed overall, but after some time it wore a bit thin and started to blend together.
Grandad-core, let's goooo
I know… it’s history, but… 😴
three songs in i was like nice, i like this guy, great voice! SIXTEEN songs of how miserable you are about a girl? please stop.
boring (adj.) - causing weariness and restlessness through lack of interest.
In the wee small hours, we jive, or swing or something. 70 years ago this came out. Wild how the industry has evolved since then.
There is no questioning Sinatra’s talent, but I’m just not one for crooners. It’s a good enough album that I’ll give it 2+ stars but there are many other albums I would choose to play.
Sinatra has a great voice, but I really hate these maudlin, over orchestrated concept albums. I get it, the guy is bummed his girl is gone. But I don't need to hear that over and over on a Friday. Great talent, but I'm not going to come back to this one. I'm sure these songs would be better if they weren't all grouped together on one album.
This is not my favorite version of Sinatra -- I prefer more more swing and life to my Sinatra.
It’s a 2 star album that I’m glad is on here. I didn’t enjoy listening to it but reading about it was pretty interesting. Rating: 1.9
I remember in the 90s when it was cool to like the old crooners. Must have been the same time everyone was into swing dancing. Over it.
Wow is this boring. Hang on, folks, Elvis will be there next year.... (sorry, dad)
The Sinatra voice is once again smooth like butter and the musicianship is tight, considered & very delicate through the album. There’s no doubt there are huge qualities here & that Sinatra was a master of his time, but when it comes to the pace, impact & tone of the album, I can’t help but find it a little tiresome as it progresses. There’s only so many slow-paced, delicate songs about heartbreak I can listen to before it gets old.
Stemningsfulle melodier fra Frank, men det holder ikke i grevens år 2026. Det passer dog greit når man skal sove. Skal innrømme at top 3 her er helt vilkårlig. Top 3: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, I’ll Be Around, Can’t We Be Friends?
I know who Sinatra is. I know the voice. But I don’t think I’ve ever really listed to his music. Being a fan of rock and roll. It’s interesting to hear rock recordings from this same year against this one. This is huge and lush. It’s a great album. All ballads. Don’t know if I would listen again.
Frank, buddy, get over it.
Maybe if this was half the length and had some more upbeat songs... well it wouldn't be the same album then I guess? I'll leave the last words to Frank, "goes on and on...". Two stars.
I like Frankie but this was so slow, so sad, so boring. I get it, and I applaud him for breaking out of the standards to sing meaningful songs for himself, but this just isn't a good album.
2 masterclass crooning. Zero hits.
I can understand why this is some kind of important album but I'm too young for this
This is the oldest album on this list, and it hasn't aged well. 16 dull indistinguishable tune-less songs about Frank's girl leaving him with piercing strings in the background. This would be a 1 if it wasn't for Sinatra's lovely voice.
i could not possibly care less about frank sinatra. I'm not the biggest fan of vocal jazz in general but I'm specifically very sick of frankie. I've heard it said about Louis armstrong that he proved that singing doesn't have to be pretty to be expressive, and sinatra is like the antithesis of that. this is my big problem with most "good" male vocalists, that they're either so focused on being technically proficient or have enough natural talent to have never considered what, if anything, their voices are actually expressing. from this you either get completely flat, emotionless singing, or affected emotion that's way too over the top and/or reads as phony, and sinatra is solidly in the final category. i simply don't buy any of it. he's affecting these emotions and feelings because it's what's marketable and identifiable with his "brand" and what's expected of a "good" male singer, but none of it reads as real, i do not ever feel or perceive anything genuine from his vocal performances. of course, he did employ and collaborate with many talented musicians, but I'd much rather listen to them play without his listless crooning over the top. this does deserve its spot on the list for its history in the development of the album as an art form in and of itself but i certainly don't want to actually listen to it ever again
Yeah that's what music sounds like.
meh. this album was very samey and i didn't really enjoy it. it wasn't bad to listen to per se, it was just boring. Like I get why Frank Sinatra is considered the father of vocal jazz don't get me wrong, but comparing this to any of Nina Simone's releases is like comparing plain toast to a decadent breakfast. not gonna revisit.
Kinda sucks, gotta be honest. Saccharine, annoying voice, there are way better versions of this same thing done by artists who aren’t abusive pricks.
Don't care for Sinatra man.
was surprised to find that the album had finished, it just all blurred together in the background and I had sort of assumed it would go on forever - which I can appreciate as the goal of an album, but I don't think it's what Sinatra was really going for and I don't see it that way
Sad Christmas music type beat
A little long to be listening to while not heartbroken.
Classic, but doesnt hold up much today, there's some nicer jazz and better singers, seems more like a cult of personality to me
I find this quite boring and dated.
Sorry Frank, this is just not for me
Eh x
Nonsense
4/10… vocal jazz / piano / *1955
Great performance by Sinatra, but an album full of sad ballads makes for such a sleeper record. Really beautiful arrangements throughout, but not a ton of differentiation between tracks.
I’m a Tony Bennett man myself.
He’s very good at what he does, it’s just not for me. Smooth, clean vocals. A little too slow. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again
