Reviews (page 7 of 8)

It’s virtually impossible to understand the musical times these were recorded in. Comparatively it feels a sparse and bland time. But then I remembered this was released the same year that Back to the Future was set. Given that film’s strict adherence to historical and cultural accuracy, we know exactly what life was like then. Anyway, this album really bored the tits off me today.

There are worse ways to spend a Sunday evening than listening to Frank Sinatra, but there are only so many ways you can sing about the mysteries of love before it gets a bit repetitive. To the point I was convinced I’d heard some songs twice.

He really did have a beautiful voice. It's dreamy. And all of his songs sound like a soundtrack to a 50s Hollywood movie, regardless of whether they were actually ever in a film. But ultimately this just made me feel a bit sleepy. I think it's another example of an album that needs a certain time of year to really be enjoyed. This is clearly a snuggled in a blanket, watching the rain patter on the window, in the dark of a late autumn evening kinda record. It's currently the summer and in the midst of of one of the hottest, least rainy summers I have ever experienced. It doesn't fit. 2/5

So my beef with Frank is that every song is exactly the same…pining for someone lost. Like dude get a job, do something productive, and grow up. I realize he was huge at the time and meant a lot to my grandparents and was an icon and all but in 2026 it all seems so immature and childish. He’s the beneficiary of a limited view of the world and limited options in terms of entertainment. It’s not that the songs are terrible. I just don’t want to hear them outside of the holidays or some movie made in the 70s about the 50s. Rant over. 2/5

I recognize and respect Sinatra's amazing career, but I just don't care for this. And I don't think Dylan covered any of these songs on his recent albums, which would have been the only interest I would have had in any of them.

Always enjoy Frank's voice but the slower nature of this one wasn't what I was looking for. Maybe scores higher on a different day

Feels like they recorded the same song 16 times. It just got tiresome. Nor did it help that all the songs were intentionally melancholic and slow.

ehhh i'm sorry but i don't really care for frank sinatra... his songs are nice when i'm not listening to a whole album, but an entire 45 minutes of what effectively feels like just the same song 16 times? no thanks. high 2/5, at least the song that he was repeating was pretty nice i guess. does not deserve to be here, i trust that frank has better and more deserving albums of the spot on the list than this one.

Höre ihn vor allem in der Weihnachtszeit. Als Album war mir das jetzt etwas zu lahm. Ist übrigens das älteste Album hier in der Liste.

Grew up listening to Frank with my dad. Didn't recognize this album and listened to it while driving. Probably should to have listened in the wee small hours.

I felt like I was inside a chapel of rest with just the piped-in music for company throughout the whole of this the dreary bollocks.

I can't get into this. It's too much like an old fashion musical or Disney movie

Meh, just not my thing at all

A bit too vocal focused for my taste. Pretty enough but dated.

aw Frank, it's gonna be OK mate.

The longest wee small hour in my life...

Rating: 5/10 Giving it the exact same score as Songs For Swingin' Lovers. The two albums do have a different lil vibe, In The Wee Small Hours has Sinatra crooning about the sad heartbreak side of love while the follow up is warmer and more upbeat. For both albums, the best song I think is by far the first one. Truthfully, I wish the book just put a Sinatra's greatest hits album in instead, I think I would appreciate that a lot more.

Banging album cover, especially for that time, I think that's the thing I enjoy most about this album. I'm sure that for that time period this was more interesting, but it's just not something I'd deliberately listen to. Does Frank Sinatra deserve to be on this list? A thousand percent. Does this album specifically deserve to be on this list? I have no idea. When I saw 1955, I thought huh his first album made it on this list but then I read the wiki and WHAT do you mean this is his NINTH ALBUM?? AND HE HAS FIFTY-EIGHT OTHER ALBUMS?? I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to Sinatra or the 50s in general, not because I'm in my 20s, but because I'm not American. During these times my country was under the communists, so you basically had to risk your life to listen to this stuff. Hence this genre/period doesn't have any influence, it doesn't bring any memories, it's not like I would be going to my grandma when I was little and hear this album blasting cuz it was never a sensation here. I'm saying this cuz I feel like some of the people who rate this highly only do so due to nostalgia or memories with older relatives they have surrounding this album. To be completely honest, this is the first time I've ever even heard this album. I didn't know any song on it. It mainly reminds me of Tom and Jerry cuz it sometimes had this jazzy music in the background. That being said, I feel like I've just listened to a reaaally long song. I got quite bored, actually. At least the songs are short.

A bit somber and sad for my tastes. Made me feel like a noir detective who’s been left by everyone he’s ever loved but remains poetic

it feels so bad to give /frank sinatra/ a 2 but this just isn't very good. it's the same song about being sad 16 times.

Not the best from frank

really insipid

I understand why Frank Sinatra is on here considering he's one of the most important artists of the 20th century but his music has not aged well like at all. Probably would've sounded better if I was sat in a dimly lit jazz bar instead of at my desk working with headphones in. Definitely the most boring listen so far. 4/10

This album's sometimes reputation of being the first concept album is overshadowed by its tedious pacing. There is definitely a thematic connection here, with its focus on heartbroken nights. But there's basically no variety musically to be found. Every song is slow and rather empty, with subtle, swaying strings occasionally punctuated by horns or sharp strings. Sinatra's vocals, which are of course great, are the driving force, and it's hard to tell that the songs have different melodies at all. The lyrics are carefully crafted and evocative, but even there the theme kind of gets worn out by the end. On their own every song is very good, but fifty minutes of them is too much to listen to in one sitting.

I dabble in Sinatra every now and then and generally enjoy his music. This album disappointed me a bit. Sure, his voice is great, but there isn't much else going for it. The album is too long, the songs are too similar, and the arrangements are a bit boring. Compared with one of my favourite albums in the same genre, The Genius of Ray Charles, the shortcomings become very obvious. On that record, the band breathes, the solos are lively and engaging, and each song has its own distinct character. Strong 2

Sinatra undoubtedly has a good voice, but these songs are just so boring to me that it holds it back. Music can't be carried by vocals alone, and while the instrumentals are often pretty, they aren't enough.

Part of me thinks that this album would be better at night because the first two tracks are great. Part of me also thinks that this album, while containing the talented vocal prowess of Sir Sinatra, is a huge drag. I listened at 9am, I like the swing stuff better...I don't care, I'm making my pick (6/10, 2/5 on this scale)

snore. he’s obviously so talented but nothing stood out, and got tired of sad yearning boy lyrics.

You either like Frank Sinatra, or you were born after 1950. I was born after 1950.

Though he has a great voice and I like sad music, I felt virtually nothing throughout this.

2/5 - Music used to be so much more performative. Ol' Blue Eyes as a sad bastard? Riiight. This just puts me to sleep.

It's definitely not the best of Sinatra.

Music to fall asleep to, my god that was pretty boring. Let’s face it if that was released in the modern era we’d be laughing at the lyrics. Sinatra just got in there first cos there was like 10 songs out, most sound the same with no variety.

Snoozefest...beautiful but a snoozefest

He has a great voice, but this just felt like one very long and boring heartbreak song and it was pretty much a snooze fest. Mix it up a little, Frank!

2 - not for me

I had a tough time with this. It felt like an hour of the same song.

I know people love this guy’s voice. I’ve just never felt the attraction. Meh. And damn the pacing is slow! This isn’t a Sinatra album I would have chosen for this list.

My dad has decided that Frank Sinatra and the rest of the rat pack are the perfect dinner music. Honestly, I don’t disagree; it does make for a pleasant dining experience. As an album though, this started to get a bit tedious by the end. It’s not bad and Frank is incredibly cool, but it just all starts to sound the same. My wife just mentioned that she keeps expecting each song to be a Christmas song.

I’ve loved the title track for a long time, but this album is a slog. It’s long and slow and I just don’t have much stamina for long slow jazz crooning.

The music is well done, Sinatra's voice is great, but the sum is less than the parts. Maybe I am biased by the David Faustino of the 90s when dorks tried to make the Rat Pack cool, but this album makes me really appreciate Chuck Berry and Little Richard even more.

Синатра конечно очень влиятельный в музыке. Но альбому уже более 70лет. Как же тяжело было слушать час однотипных любовных терзаний

Second Frank Sinatra album and I remain underwhelmed. Sure the guy’s got a great smooth voice but what else?

I struggled with this one because I know Frank Sinatra is one of the best singers to have ever lived, but this just doesn’t do it for me unfortunately

Great voice, but 50 minutes of sad crooning over basic 50s instrumentals is difficult to get through. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

Nah mate.

Bit low energy for me.

moyen bof même

Désolé Frank, t'as une super voix mais on se fait chier...

I am aware of the existence of Frank Sinatra and prior to listening to this already have 6 songs by him liked on Spotify - but none from this album. It looks like this is the oldest album on this list - so curious to see how this goes. Thoughts while listening ... 1st time through ... ---------------------- I kept thinking that at least one of the songs would pop out at me as something I've heard before - just by being alive on this planet for 60 years. But apparently, even though this is considered one of his greatest albums, it didn't have any songs that have lasted in public consciousness (or at least mine). I figured one of them would have been in movies or tv shows or just generally played over and over again. Reading more on Wikipedia, I can see some of these have been in many movies / TV shows - but I guess they didn't register with me. I knew Sinatra didn't write songs - but it just really hit me reading how for this album he chose songs from the "Great American Songbook" to match his mood/theme for this album. What was radio like back in the day?? Were you just constantly listening to new performances of songs you've already heard many times before by many other artists? Probably need to ask my dad about this! I never though of Sinatra as "jazz" - was surprised to see the Wikipedia article call it "one of the best vocal jazz releases of all time." I think of jazz as much more improvisational with complex rhythms and melodies - more like a jam band. I guess I just don't understand what jazz is then if this is considered jazz. 2nd time through... ---------------------- "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" - is good. Sets the mood for the album. "Mood Indigo" - also pretty good. "Can't We Be Friends" - fun to see the concept of being "friend zoned" has been a thing probably forever. More modernish example -> "Friend is a Four Letter Word" by Cake :) "What is This Thing Called Love" - this one stuck out to me for the different arrangement - with the trumpet (I think, maybe clarinet??) featured prominently over the top of the background orchestra. "Last Night When We Were Young" - thought the lyrics for this were cool - pointing out how when something is over - even though it was not over yesterday it starts to feel like forever ago. "Dancing on the Ceiling" - lyrically, a more unique way to express the same thing he's been expressing the whole album - which is that he misses the girl. 3rd time through... ---------------------- Frank is definitely a good singer and the music seems good for what it is. Did they not have drums back in the day?? Cool that this is basically the first concept album. The concept was "I am sad and lonely because my girl dumped me". Also cool that it really got the ball moving with 12" LPs. That was the standard way to listen to music when I was a kid - so I guess I have Frank to thank for popularizing and showing what was possible with this format. I'm not sure I will ever sit down and listen to this whole thing in one sitting. The bummed out, sad and lonely mood of all of this get's to be a little much after 16 songs. I guess Ava Gardner must have really crushed him. BUT I did end up liking the 6 songs mentioned above. So now I have doubled my Frank Sinatra songs that will show up on my automated playlists. Progress! Liked songs on Spotify: 6/16 Rating: 2/5

Not my favorite. Every song sounded exactly the same. I do love Frank Sinatra but I got so bored with this one.

50 minutes of the same bland love songs, one after the other...

Impressive but dull

A melancholic vocal jazz-pop album filled out with orchestral arrangements. A consistent emotive tone largely focused on love lost. He’s certainly a great vocalist - smooth and cool. Well arranged and performed overall, but after some time it wore a bit thin and started to blend together.

Grandad-core, let's goooo

I know… it’s history, but… 😴

three songs in i was like nice, i like this guy, great voice! SIXTEEN songs of how miserable you are about a girl? please stop.

boring (adj.) - causing weariness and restlessness through lack of interest.

In the wee small hours, we jive, or swing or something. 70 years ago this came out. Wild how the industry has evolved since then.

There is no questioning Sinatra’s talent, but I’m just not one for crooners. It’s a good enough album that I’ll give it 2+ stars but there are many other albums I would choose to play.

Sinatra has a great voice, but I really hate these maudlin, over orchestrated concept albums. I get it, the guy is bummed his girl is gone. But I don't need to hear that over and over on a Friday. Great talent, but I'm not going to come back to this one. I'm sure these songs would be better if they weren't all grouped together on one album.

This is not my favorite version of Sinatra -- I prefer more more swing and life to my Sinatra.

It’s a 2 star album that I’m glad is on here. I didn’t enjoy listening to it but reading about it was pretty interesting. Rating: 1.9

I remember in the 90s when it was cool to like the old crooners. Must have been the same time everyone was into swing dancing. Over it.

Wow is this boring. Hang on, folks, Elvis will be there next year.... (sorry, dad)

The Sinatra voice is once again smooth like butter and the musicianship is tight, considered & very delicate through the album. There’s no doubt there are huge qualities here & that Sinatra was a master of his time, but when it comes to the pace, impact & tone of the album, I can’t help but find it a little tiresome as it progresses. There’s only so many slow-paced, delicate songs about heartbreak I can listen to before it gets old.

Stemningsfulle melodier fra Frank, men det holder ikke i grevens år 2026. Det passer dog greit når man skal sove. Skal innrømme at top 3 her er helt vilkårlig. Top 3: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, I’ll Be Around, Can’t We Be Friends?

I know who Sinatra is. I know the voice. But I don’t think I’ve ever really listed to his music. Being a fan of rock and roll. It’s interesting to hear rock recordings from this same year against this one. This is huge and lush. It’s a great album. All ballads. Don’t know if I would listen again.

Frank, buddy, get over it.

Maybe if this was half the length and had some more upbeat songs... well it wouldn't be the same album then I guess? I'll leave the last words to Frank, "goes on and on...". Two stars.

I like Frankie but this was so slow, so sad, so boring. I get it, and I applaud him for breaking out of the standards to sing meaningful songs for himself, but this just isn't a good album.

2 masterclass crooning. Zero hits.

I can understand why this is some kind of important album but I'm too young for this

This is the oldest album on this list, and it hasn't aged well. 16 dull indistinguishable tune-less songs about Frank's girl leaving him with piercing strings in the background. This would be a 1 if it wasn't for Sinatra's lovely voice.

i could not possibly care less about frank sinatra. I'm not the biggest fan of vocal jazz in general but I'm specifically very sick of frankie. I've heard it said about Louis armstrong that he proved that singing doesn't have to be pretty to be expressive, and sinatra is like the antithesis of that. this is my big problem with most "good" male vocalists, that they're either so focused on being technically proficient or have enough natural talent to have never considered what, if anything, their voices are actually expressing. from this you either get completely flat, emotionless singing, or affected emotion that's way too over the top and/or reads as phony, and sinatra is solidly in the final category. i simply don't buy any of it. he's affecting these emotions and feelings because it's what's marketable and identifiable with his "brand" and what's expected of a "good" male singer, but none of it reads as real, i do not ever feel or perceive anything genuine from his vocal performances. of course, he did employ and collaborate with many talented musicians, but I'd much rather listen to them play without his listless crooning over the top. this does deserve its spot on the list for its history in the development of the album as an art form in and of itself but i certainly don't want to actually listen to it ever again

Yeah that's what music sounds like.

meh. this album was very samey and i didn't really enjoy it. it wasn't bad to listen to per se, it was just boring. Like I get why Frank Sinatra is considered the father of vocal jazz don't get me wrong, but comparing this to any of Nina Simone's releases is like comparing plain toast to a decadent breakfast. not gonna revisit.

Kinda sucks, gotta be honest. Saccharine, annoying voice, there are way better versions of this same thing done by artists who aren’t abusive pricks.

Don't care for Sinatra man.

was surprised to find that the album had finished, it just all blurred together in the background and I had sort of assumed it would go on forever - which I can appreciate as the goal of an album, but I don't think it's what Sinatra was really going for and I don't see it that way

Sad Christmas music type beat

A little long to be listening to while not heartbroken.

Classic, but doesnt hold up much today, there's some nicer jazz and better singers, seems more like a cult of personality to me

I find this quite boring and dated.

Sorry Frank, this is just not for me

Nonsense

4/10… vocal jazz / piano / *1955

Great performance by Sinatra, but an album full of sad ballads makes for such a sleeper record. Really beautiful arrangements throughout, but not a ton of differentiation between tracks.

I’m a Tony Bennett man myself.

He’s very good at what he does, it’s just not for me. Smooth, clean vocals. A little too slow. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again

Maybe on another day or in other circumstances, I could settle in and appreciate the languorous, melancholic times of this album, but on a day I was busy doing this and that, it really felt shapeless and meandering.

What a difference a decade makes! To think that this was the popular sound of 1955 and then compare to the music of 1965! The Beatles, Stones and Motown still sound reasonably modern. This feels like music from a different century. Even just two years later, the first Chuck Berry album came out, which might as well have come from a different planet... I appreciate the quality of the voice and musicianship, but oof, this sounds as ancient as the pyramids!

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 🚬🎩🖌️ Production (2018 Remaster): 🕰️🤏👍 Music: 🍸😑🔂 Rating: 💔💔(💔)/5

In the words of a great singer Frank Sinatra "you're blowing me no good"

Only Fallout Sinatra for me please. 2/5

Generously rounding up because Frank has a nice voice. Jesus this was a slog. All the songs sound exactly the same. All slow to mid tempo sob fest. More like ol Snooze Eyes, amirite?

Atmospheric and full of longing. Quite good. High 2s.

Sorry, but Sinatra is boring

Ska should be banned

Another one where I could appreciate the talent and the cultural significance but couldn’t wait for it to end. Not my kind of music at all, and even if it was, 16 songs with same tone and arrangement would have done my head in anyway. 2 stars, sorry Frank, I know you were a god.

Buen álbum pero algo monótono para mí.

"Your music is like the soundtrack to a vasectomy" - Epic Rap Battles of History on Frank Sinatra

I’m far from a Sinatra fan, the music is not for me, it’s boring, disingenuous slop and the only reason people were into it was because it was the 50’s and you listened to whatever was forced on the radio and then people kept saying this suave chode was something special and people kept listening and on and on it went. New Yorkers put him on a pedestal and he sadly neve got knocked down a peg. Well I’m sick of it, Sinatra is boring and sure he has a smooth voice but butter is smooth, doesn’t mean it need 50 minutes of butter. This could have been a 45 with two songs, I’d be fine with that. 2 stars

I personally prefer a loungier, bad-boy Sinatra, so this didn’t really gel with me. It’s kinda one-note in a way that doesn’t really work too well. This would fit in certain settings, but a whole album of this is a drag. It kinda hurts to rate Sinatra this low.

He's the best of the crooners no doubt but I couldn't engage with this album at all.

Undeniably, he has a good voice. Unfortunately, that doesn't make this album any less boring.

All due respect to this icon and what was going on in Sinatra's life when he released this album, but In the Wee Small Hours sounds like 16 variations of the same song. Any of them on their own, sure, I'll listen. Put them all together on one interminable album? Ugh. The longer it dragged on, the more hostile I became. While I'd be crushed, too, if Ava Gardner dumped me, I can't abide Sinatra's crooning and the syrupy, dreary repetitiveness of this album.

This album just bores me. 2 stars or D-.

Not for me. Incredibly boring. Every song is the same gentle crooning, which I could maybe get the appeal of for a song or two but 16 is far too many, even though the album is not that long.

When Your Lonely Heart Has Learned Its Lesson 1001 Albums Generator 160 (11/12/2025) I know that there absolutely has to be a Frank Sinatra album on any list like this, and I won't deny that. His deep, crooning vocals and lush orchestration are iconic. And In The Wee Small Hours is a really sad, vibey album. It really does sound exactly like its cover and made me want to go smoke a cig in the rain and feel sad. I just wish that the songs stuck out more to me. This may just be a personal failure or lack of taste, but this style of silky smooth vocal jazz is really hard for me to focus on. Besides the first two songs, which are really good, the rest of the album flowed together. The version of It Never Entered My Mind was also really pretty. I can acknowledge the importance of this album and this artist in music history while also saying that he just isn't for me, outside of his hits, none of which are on this album. 2/5 for being technically high quality, but just so outside of what I consider "my thing". Favs: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning Mood Indigo It Never Entered My Mind Least Fav: Ill Wind (I guess, no strong feelings here)

not my style

Frank Sinatra's voice is just so iconic. The scoring in this album is quite cinematic, a very similar feeling throughout the whole thing. It was too similar for me to up the rating. There was no growth or differing intrigue from song to song. Voice awesome, the album as a whole did not stand out

Love the guy, and some of his work, and then there’s this one. He’s got a great voice, but overall this one’s just way too slow and boring for me.

Its like listening to the same song over and over again

Not a fan of this style of music so this was hard to get through.

Amazing voice, naturally, but damn does this album suck. It was enjoyable for the first few songs but it became so repetitive and obnoxious. A nearly hour long album about heartbreak gets exhausting. Would give this 5/5 if i heard it in a dimly lit lounge with a few whiskeys and a cigar.

It’s pretty one note and I didn’t like it that much. I can appreciate its musical significance, but it feels very much like old movie-soundtrack music, and 50s crooning does not do it for me. Too much easy-listening or lounge music feels grating at a point. The songs all sound pretty much the same.

I like Frank’s voice but way to many too many failed loved songs already!

Why do I feel greasy after listening to Sinatra?

Not for me

Mood Indigo //

Snoozefest.

In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning

Jazz. His ninth album. Is this the original break up album ? Sixteen songs of heartbreak. Sure, Sinatra's voice is that silky smooth vessel we all know and love and the music, well, it's nice. However it got boring pretty fast and by the end it all sounds the same. At the time though he was the man, just before Rock n Roll exploded.

Not that into crooners, driving or otherwise.

It's nice enough, but there is no range. This is less an album and more just different versions of a 3-minute song that sounds the same as the rest. I know they all have different lyrics and shit, but listening to each other evokes the same exact emotions.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ole Blue Eyes but this is hardly an album. They hadn't really perfected what an album should be yet and they would only really focus on singles, which is really where he shines. Now if when this came out and I was sitting at Mr. Kelly's listening to this, I'm sure I would've spilled my gin martini.

I have never been a Frank fan. His singing voice and the way he slides up to the note of the words he is singing just isn't my preference. I did give the album a very slow and boring listen, never to hear it again please!! These may have been love songs of my Parents generation, and they should have stayed with that generation... Not for me at all. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? N/A ⭐️ ⭐️ Didn't hate it but didn's like it one single bit

i get the appeal but, this was a bit boring way too many sad songs to listen to all at once

Gosh, I dunno. Writer’s block, but this is 2*.

The first concept album recorded 53. Unbearable fat arrangements and melancholic Atmosphäre.

Lite inspirerende denne, men kanskje meninga?

Not my genre, beautiful voice

Excellent voice but so boring.

Easy listening but not for me. Maybe I need to be in a ballroom

# 553 : The Wee Small Hours -- Frank Sinatra In the Wee Small Hours – Sinatra Sings, You Snooze Conditioned response: see Sinatra, expect a classic. Reality: a slow, moody drag through the emotional wreckage of heartbreak and insomnia. Yes, Frank’s voice is smooth as silk and undeniably iconic—but this album feels like it’s been playing in the background of a sad diner since 1955. Every track is a variation on loneliness, lost love, or late-night brooding. It’s classy, sure, but also kind of a downer. And when the highlight of your listening experience is realizing you’ve nodded off, maybe it’s not quite the essential masterpiece it’s cracked up to be. Verdict: A velvet-voiced lullaby for the emotionally exhausted. Respect the crooner, skip the coma. If you have to listen to this, look out for: N/A Listened: 25/08/2025

Ok. Time and a place, slow one.

Frank sure could sing, but these songs are all soooo slow and depressing. If this is the first concept album, I'm kind of amazed that there were others. It's the same song over and over... I'll Be Around, in particular, is giving me the ick. She said no, dude. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A My ratings are kind of based on general vibes and how many tracks I save to my Deezer profile -- ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

Beautiful voice and album. Not the kind of music I particularly enjoy though. It felt a bit repetitive in lyrical themes.

Just too much Frank

Fine but doesn't stick with me. Just very samey.

I've maybe heard some of these songs in passing but I certainly have not listened to this album in full. This is a bit to slow for my personal taste. I wouldn't mind it playing in the background during dinner or something. But that's about it. 2.3/5

One of his better albums for sure, but I just don't give a shit about Sinatra.

No hate to Frank Sinatra. Legendary vocalist. Regardless if you're into vocal jazz or not, he's THE guy. This is often considered to be one of the first concept albums. The concept here is apparently crooning, because that's all Frank does. It's a chill listen, but it's 16 songs that all sound extremely similar. Frank's sad about women, and he's singing about it. *Heard before

A little bit annoying as everybody said, isn't? Frank Needy Sinatra

cheer up frank!

Hidasta ja itseään toistavaa musiikkia minun korvaani. Kai se tunnelmallista ja orkestraalista kuitenkin on. Aikanansa kuitenkin menevämpääkin musaa löytyy.

Rating: 4/10 Nah.

The Wikipedia entry gives good context for why this particular album is historically important and there are definitely good songs along the way. However, I'm not sure I need 50 minutes of sad songs that aren't particularly imaginative. Sinatra can certainly sing though.

Vintage songs and orchestration.

Dithered over rating this a two but in the end decided that's what I deserves. Frank's voice and the arrangements and lyrics are decent, but every single sounds the fucking same, and it makes for a very boring listening experience.

A drag, on the whole, with no highlights to speak of.

Very slow, rather depressing music, not the upbeat jazzy Sinatra that normally comes to mind. Although the album is only 49 minutes, it seemed to drag on forever.

Oldest album in the list right here. I felt kind of bored by this release for whatever reason. I can like Frank Sinatra and crooners at times, but didn't really care for it now. It's all well made and well produced, but it's just kind of boring to me.

I like a lot of Sinatra’s songs. But this album was too melancholy for my taste

That sort of old music doesn’t really connect with me… meh, not horrific tho. Gets a bit repetitive and not really for the modern era. Bit of a drag

Nice voice (of course) but all very samey tunes-wise.

He definitely has a great voice, but it's all a bit boring, innit? Has that golden age glitz all over it. Does make for good background music for an evening you simply want to put on a suit and sip whisky in front of the fireplace. Best: What is This Thing Called Love Worst: I Get Along Without You Very Well

I really do like Frank Sinatra, and I love this genre of music - so believe me when I say it hurts to admit that I don't think this album is for me at all. The whole album felt like the same song, just constant songs about heartbreak. And they all felt like Christmas tunes. I get that it's a concept album, but 50 minutes of the same tone, tune, instruments, and vocal expression is just grim. I tuned out about 10 minutes in, and honestly this got so jading towards the end. The best parts of this record were the few moments in songs like Ill Wind during the instrumental breaks where we get to hear Charles Turner playing his trumpet. This record definitely picks up in the last couple of songs. Ill Wind was my favourite song by far; but it's still not enough to save my negative view of this. I think there's way better Sinatra records out there to listen to, this is definitely not my favourite. Frank Sinatra = Good In The Wee Small Hours = Not Very Good

The very definition of background music. Slow, bland and boring. I know he was a thing in his day but I'm seeing what is so special.

Favoriten This Love of mine In the wee Small Hours of the Morning

This was an okay album, I guess. Sinatra has nice enough voice but the songs are slow and plodding. Every song sounded the same. I honestly couldn’t wait for the album to end. But the songs are probably fine if you like Sinatra and he’s a bit of a legend so it’s a “2” for this one.

While Sinatra’s voice is amazing, the album felt monotonous. All the songs kind of blended together for me.

I don't know. Sorry that happened to you, man. She's just not that into you. There’s plenty of good musicianship on this album and obviously, of course, clearly, Sinatra can sing. This feels like someone at the bar (who keeps insisting they haven’t had that much to drink, really) slowly hashing out their post-breakup laments to you. It’s moody, and then it’s boring.

Yeah he's got a good voice, but to me this is much more of something I'd like to hear live in a smoke filled room drinking a Manhattan than on an album. There's a bit of a repetitive to this that I think I could look past seeing it live, but I got pretty bored by the end of this one.

Big fan of Sinatra, but not this one. Every song is sad and gloomy which makes it a tough listen all the way through. 2/5.

Maybe a little unfair rating a 2 here, but this kinda crooner music does nothing for me. Every song on this album is the same tempo and about the same thing. Sinatra is obviously one of the greats, the lack of variety brings this one down for me, though.

As an occasional Frank Sinatra enjoyer, I just couldn't get into this one. I think it was too slow/moody for me. Really needed a few upbeat tracks to break up the melancholy slowness of the album. Without that, it all kinda blended together. Positive- none of the songs were bad, really. I could see any of the songs having an appeal on their own, but hearing all 16 in a row was way too much. Overall: 1.75/5

3/10 It's harsh, but I just don't like this type of music. It was absolutely vital though: the antithesis that rock and roll needed to become the phenomenon it did. You got to have something to rebel against and these perfectly orchestrated, perfectly sung, perfectly bland songs were that.

Sinatra has a nice voice, but it works best when it gets to do a variety of songs and tempos. This album all but put me to sleep. I can’t do a dozen slow crooning songs in a row. Maybe there’s a day where the mood is right to listen to this, but it was not today.

This isn't very good.

Nice voice, but every track is effectively a carbon-copy of the one that came before it. Good to have on in the background when cooking the dinner, but beyond that I wouldn’t actively listen to it.

Respect for the first concept album ever Frank, complete with cool artwork. However as ever the music of Sinatra leaves me as cold as a cold thing.

Not a single song on this album has a temporary above a rest heart rate, it just slowly drags on and on and on.

The band sounds good, Frank's voice is fine. It's just that the songs just don't appeal to me. I don't find them romantic or passionate at all. Instead I feel like this is a collection of movie themes.

Samaa kaavaa alusta loppuun. Yhden tai kahden kappaleen jälkeen tuli ähky. Ei kiitos enempää.

Too mellow

Yearning background music

Julien bam type beat

Franky Boy, scho ganz e gueti Stimm, aber da het ihn d Ziit und die modern Musig leider längstens überholt. Zwei Fedoras mit zwei Zigis ide Hand defür

Franky du alte knacker. Gfüllt mit all dene us influences scho 1000mal uf de mr sinatra gstosse, aber na nie würki was uscheggt.

Definitely not my kind of music; respect for the legend, for the icon, great artist... anyway not for me, sorry!

After multiple pauses it's taken me all day to make it to the end of this series of monotonous dirges. I haven't the heart to put such a beautiful voice into the 1 star bin with all the rap, hip hop, roooooaaaaar, 'American rock group', Beastie Boys & Slipknot shite, but my 2 stars feels extremely generous & not really deserved.

Oh my lord this was so dreary and dull. Every song sounded the same. Same topic of song. It just went on and on and on. Just depressing and slow

Hmm, well I do love Frank but to be honest this was boooooring. Just slowly signing some dull lyrics. I can see it has a place and kind of get why people liked this kind of thing but I just couldn't really cope.

Probably just background music for me. No doubt it is pleasant on the ears though

I've learned i don't care for Frank

Never had anyone in my family and a Sinatra fan so the nostalgia element isn't there for me....I obviously appreciate that he was a big deal and he does have a great voice. But, it's dated and none of the big hitters are here, all felt very long and samey too. Sorry Frank

No gruba zamulka, nie jestem fanem sinatry

Probably a very “good” album by any objective evaluation. But not my cup of tea, and my reviews are for future me.

1. morning - 2.5 2. indigo - 1.5 3. unhappy - 1.5 4. along - 2 5. dream - 1.5 6. face - 1.5 7. friendz - 1 8. lover - 1.5 9. thing - 2 10. night - 2.5 11. around - 1 12. uuind - 1 13. mind - 1 14. dancing - 1 15. zame - 1.5 16. mine - 1.5

Of course Frank has a smooth voice - but how damn boring.

I have no time for this, really.

Didn’t expect to be giving a Frank Sinatra album 2 stars but it was just such a slog to get through. Every song sounded the same to me

Best Song: In the Wee Small Hours Of The Morning. I truly can't tell if I liked this more or if I just hadn't spoiled on Sinatra's grossly saccharine style yet. Worst Song: Can't We Be Friends? Frank Sinatra with the OG incel track. Overall: Basically the same song 16 times in a row. And that one song isn't even that good! Don't understand why this album would be chosen, given that there's already an abundance of Sinatra on the list. I just don't want to Sinatra wimpily singing about his made up woes. Stop crooning about how you now need to order orange juice for one and write something interesting.

opening song was beautiful and i thought the album would be perfect. almost every song sounds the same but he’s an amazing vocalists and one of the most iconic voices ever. very influential perhaps this album isn’t his best. love how it reminded me of one of my favorite movies, 101 dalmatians. sounds like these songs should be in the soundtrack.

One of the most boring things I've ever listened to. It's not actively bad, but it's very soporific and all sounds the same

I like the simplicity that allows the vocal to be the star but the subject matter gets dull after a while. I want to hear more Frank, but some change to topic and pace would be nice

I like his voice but sadly not the melancholy vibes. This isn't a hit for me, but I would loop his other stuff

Frank, Frank, Frank. Listen, buddy, I know you’re going through a rough patch, but there’s lots of fish in the sea, okay? You just gotta pick yourself up and get yourself back out there. I know it’s been bad, and I know you miss her, but maybe it’s for the best, right? But I’ll tell you this: nothing’s gonna change if you just sit around singing these sad-sack songs all day. Listen, it’s okay to lick your wounds, but you gotta make some changes, buddy. How’s about we go out tonight? No pressure… we’ll just go out get a drink or two and have a couple laughs. You’ll see. You’ll feel better. The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, am I right? Let’s get things moving in a positive direction, Frankie. I love you, man. You know that, right?

Not my vibe

Expected to enjoy this a lot more than I actually did.

This is a sentimental and morose album full of songs I've never heard and likely won't again. Frank's voice is silky smooth like an old Scotch spilling out in tears.

Love those pipes, but a snoozer for sure.

Beautiful voice, warm, cozy and ultimately boring album. I think Jefferson Airplane summarized this album best and they didn't even know it. You just want somebody to love. You need somebody to love. Wouldn't you love somebody to love? You better find somebody to love.

This was a sad album for sad men and just way too much sadness.

Classy, atmospheric.....just not entirely for me

Amazing voice but just too slow and sad for my tastes

Oh man. There's no voice quite like his. Nobody croons like Frankie. Makes the ladies swoon like Frankie. Sinatra the singer is unmatched. The songwriter Sinatra, however, needed a kick in the head. This isn't music for listening. You put this on to meet your in-laws. My panties remain dry. Poor effort.

A master class in slow crooning… which I snored through. I felt like I was listening to the same song the whole time. It has a distinct vibe, straddling Christmas and a romantic scene in a 1950s detective show, but not much for me to engage with.

This is so overrated, as Frank is generally. One'll take Tony Bennett any day. Go listen to the TB + Bill Evans records for what a record with this title should sound like.

Probably good in it's day. Not now though.

beautiful voice but very repetitive NNN

красиво, конечно, но уныло жесть

I get why this is on this list but this is really just not my thing

Fav: I See Your Face Before Me Least Fav: Glad To Be Unhappy Long and boring. I enjoy some Sinatra but it was just too much of the same thing, and I get that structuring of albums was different back then, but it’s still bad

I wouldn’t say it’s anything special. Some nice songs, Frank has a great voice, but nothing particularly stands out. It’s very pleasant to have on in the background, but not sure I’d go back in a hurry.

This album goes to show that legends don’t always make legendary albums. Snoozefest 3000.

Just couldn’t get into this. Just sounded like I was eating mid quality, over priced Italian food on Long Island.

He's a classic. He's got a great voice. Everyone loves him. But 50minutes is too much.

Just sounds like every song is a Christmas song. Don’t know whether I’ve just been brainwashed by his most famous song. His rhyming is also atrocious in some songs, songwriting wasn’t his speciality but apparently back in the day, you didn’t have to worry.

I'm definitely not old enough to be nostalgic about this crooning style and it seems to me that if the authors really wanted to spotlight the mid 50's, they could have picked from a myriad of albums featuring the burgeoning jazz/blues/country/rock influences of the era. As it is, if this was the music boomers were having sex to, I'm surprised that they would have stayed awake long enough to accomplish the feat.

Of its time

Old Toney music from back in the day; sorry Mr Sinatra, just wasn’t feeling it.

I can see the appeal and the music quality if high. Just not my genre. But really a great voice!

süßer text aber mir passiert einfach zu wenig

not sinatra's best work

It's fine. I can listen to it and not cringe like I did with Limp Bizkit, but I don't think I'll ever pick it up to listen to again.

Jeg kan bedre li’ den mere swingende Old Blue Eyes som er at finde på Fly Me To The Moon, My Way, New York New York og I’ve Got You Under My Skin.

I get it’s old and he’s got a great voice, but boy this is boring stuff.

So, I'm not nearly old enough to have listened to a lot of Sinatra. That said, for the last 15 years, as we've set up the xmas tree with my kids, we throw xmas songs on the Alexa as background ambiance. Today I learned that Sinatra has, in my brain, just become the sound of xmas. Past that...I don't know how to rate this. I'm not a lounge-y type guy, so this doesn't really grab me. On the other hand, the voice is iconic, and no one can deny that it's excellent, but it sounds so, so dated that it's kind of boring. It's not bad, so it seems harsh and unfair to give it 2 stars. But I don't necessarily "like" it, and I wouldn't listen to it again on purpose, so giving it 3 stars seems like more of a reputation ranking. I'm going to go 2 star, because I think it's too long. I can stand it for a couple songs, but it starts to drone after a while.

Lyrics capture the feeling of a rough break up better than a lot of music does even today Music didn’t scratch an itch in comparison to a lot of other artists for this time such as buddy holly, Elvis, chuck berry etc Best song: can’t we be friends Worst song: deep in a dream

I get that this is a clsssic, and that it's the oldest album on the list. But I have to be honest, I found this incredibly boring. I don't know exactly how one was meant to listen to this back in 1955, but I do not think that this has stood the test of time.

An album of sad songs! Supposedly the first concept album, plus I can see why Tom Waits cites it as an influence. But the problem I have with it is in the lack of variety - with the music mixed down to the background, Sinatra's (excellent) vocals are really to the fore making the whole album sound pretty much the same. And in the modern era where great albums are generally full of songs written by the artist(s), an album such as this seems somewhat out of place. It's not an album for me I'm afraid.

Never heard anyone croone so hard before, I think me and Franky boy are both crooned out after this. 2 croons out of 5, purely for the historical significance

Too calm and boring

Frank Sinatra's smooth singing and the good production of this album are the positives that can be said about this album. Lyrically it is one of the first concepts albums made. But the schmaltzy, corny, and now very dated sound of the mid-50s American pop music where all songs sound the are are really not my cup of tea at all.

Sucked on Grandpa's AM radio, sucks on Spotify. Women used to scream themselves semi-concious over this stuff - girls must have been easy then.

If you like Sinatra, you will like this album

Very old Sinatra which didn't let him show what he could do with his voice

Sinatra is a legend for a reason but it's not this album. Musically I appreciate it but that's about it.

This still plays as children's music to me, even though it's a drag. This guy should stick to christmas

I fell asleep

Put me to sleep

I get it, and there’s probably a good time or situation in which to listen. But for me, that’s not very often…yawn. That being said, it would be good breakup music for someone!

Nice try Franklin

Boring

Very late night, very smooth. It did get a bit meandering at times, and I think the first track was probably the best one. Classy though.

I really wanted to like this; I love Sinatra’s voice, but I found it meandering, lacking in melody and really forgettable.

It didn’t offend me but it didn’t excite me either. Disappointing when I know Frank was capable of better

Can't really get into this one. Seems fine enough, just too slow throughout and music pre 60's I usually can't get into. Will I listen to again: 0%

It's ok. It's about as good as I expected - nice vocals, but boring backing, with all lyrics about the same subject with the same mood and tone.

far from the best (see: popular) Frank

This is a bit of a downer, all the songs are slow tempo ballads.

Look I’m only on album #129 and this is my THIRD Frank Sinatra album. I like the guy’s voice but it’s just too many, especially considering most of his songs sound very similar. The authors could have picked one album of his and called it a day.

Great voice. No doubt about it. But this album aint my cup of tea. I found the album quite gloomy and boring. I guess jazz is really just hit and miss for me. Rating - 2/5

An album to fall to sleep next to your old lady by.

I’m sleepy.

great voice, miserable album, still somehow sounds like Christmas

Nice smooth vibes for 20mins or so but there’s no way this can hold my attention for almost an hour.

Love Frank..but this ain't it

I know some say he’s the greatest singer and blah blah but oh boy was this a snooze. I’m sorry but listening to this in the morning was a bad idea because it was putting me right back to sleep. My one positive is that it was relatively short but one more minute and I would have collapsed. I mean I just can’t get past how boring it was, I’m sure it was good but I just can’t get over that.

Frank is a mood - I'm not always or even often in that mood - although 10+ years ago I'd never imagine I'd ever want to hear crooning like this so maybe hit me up in 10 more and I might think higher of it. It's hard not to look more than a little askance at this/Sinatra's voice being schmaltzy or cheesy; maybe the bane of being GenX and looking sarcastically at many sources of (supposed) sincerity. Then again, this album has actual song construction and arrangement which I like to think I can appreciate in just about any format. In the end tho even tho it's nice background music for me at best ... as the album goes on it's just flooded with slow-paced songs to the point of it being laconic and I can't help rolling my eyes at it. By about track 8 I'm thinking somebody give me a cymbal crash or something. It's Frank's singing tho. It's too much. I hate giving 3s - too often it feels like a copout, and as I listened I started on the higher end but really moved lower as it went on ... seems a little wrong due to the undeniable skill involved with the Nelson Riddle orchestra and arrangements but who tf is gonna read this anyways? I don't really like the album - there it is. It drags - and honestly it's his voice. Enough already. Maybe it just hasn't aged well. 5/10 2 stars.

incredibly boring and repetitive. the songs arent bad and his voice is good but i was struggling after the second song. i cant comprehend why they decided to make this 50 minutes. strong 4/10

Old Blue Eyes … and Charlie Brown movies … I don’t really see the difference. They make you feel wistful. They go great with eggnog. “With no mammy and no pappy … I’m so unhappy … but I’m so glad.” OK, Frank.

This sounds EXACTLY like I thought it would. Can't knock blue eyes but this is very of it's time. It's the music I remember my gran listening and singing along to. It's pretty dull by any modern standards

Slow. Very slow. And a bit sad, too. This is music to put you to sleep in the wee small hours of the night (or anytime really.) So out of date it’s hard for me to relate. (1,7-*s)

Tried it. Didn't like it. Not a style I enjoy. Gave it to Mikey. He tried it too and spit it back out.

I would think everyone knows Frank Sinatra. I certainly do be it from my dad singing his tunes in a morning whilst he was shaving or belting out New York, New York when rounding off drunken Friday nights at a local pub. I also knew of this album as it is often cited as the first concept album. I’m a lover of concept albums and have a number in my collection so was eager to listen. My conclusion having done so is that it seems to be just a collection of standard Sinatra croons going on about lost or broken love. I cannot see/hear a connection between the songs like I was expecting. Nothing at all to rival a DD&B much abused pinball player or a mod hopping on his scooter to go to Brighton. However, great singing as you would expect together with great jazz musicians accompanying make this worthy of inclusion on this list. But it is stuck in the time it was recorded which was even before my time so difficult to relate to. I appreciate it for what it is, salute those who will say it’s one of the best albums of all time but it is not an album which I will be rushing to play again.

This is like listening to cough syrup sing, relaxing but makes me want to fall asleep.

Even at his best, to me Frank Sinatra sounds like the feeling of standing in a room that is exactly standard room temperature, drinking a glass of water that has been sitting in the same room. I did like a lot of the backing arrangements here, and I did like that it made me think of that scene in spinal tap where the limo driver gets frustrated that the band doesn’t adequately respect Frank.

My Dad had this one, too. This one is pretty thin. Great voice but none of the songs are memorable. Two stars because of Frank’s voice

Saco Triste quagmire of slowed down,over-orchestrated ballads… Glad To Be Unhappy, yeh, that about sums it up.

I thought this was going to be a 3 but then it went on a bit and was too jazzy

think this was the best of his we've had but that's not saying much

I listened to a little bit of it… pretty but fairy music

It's Frank. The sounds here are mostly avoid sounding like Christmas music to me which is always a plus. I appreciate that his approach here was to actually seriously make an album with a coherent sound and theme, in 1955 that was seriously a big step forward. It's 50 minutes and pretty repetitive. I just need one or two songs and I'm good

Actually did not really enjoy. Kinda boring and simplistic. I do love Frank though.

Was this emo music of the 1950's? 50 minutes of heartbreak with barely audible background music. Great voice but painfully boring album. I needed him to sprinkle in a Christmas song here and there to keep my attention.

Ehhh kinda boring.

THIS WAS SO FUCKING LOOOOONG & boring. I took a nap while listening to this and it was still playing when I woke up. Literal hours passed. I love some of Frank Sinatra songs but damn this was brutal to get through. 9/10 for Frank Sinatra but… 3/10 for the album.

Sad Christmas music to be heartbroken to. I realized I haven’t listened to very much Frank Sinatra but it doesn’t really matter because this album is like one extremely long song. There were a few “songs” where I literally thought I just listened to the same one back to back with how similar they were. He has an amazing voice but the way he sings and the actual lyrics of the songs started to actually drive me crazy. Some of the lyrics were so bad that I had to turn my ears off. This sounded like someone just writing down whatever comes to mind and then singing it the same way over and over. 3/10
