Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Described as "one of the first concept albums" -- in theory, an exciting display of artistic vision and consistent theming. In practice, a way for an album from the '50s to have its songs sound extra similar across the tracklist in an era where there already wasn't a lot of variety to offer Maybe that's ideal for a Sinatra album, it is what it is
It sounds pretty much what I expected Sinatra to sound like. Old and classic. The rhyme scheme is interestingly simple. It’s enjoyable and slow, not my favorite thing to listen to, but pretty nice. His voice is quite nice, unsurprisingly
Very pleasant, but needed some variety. It's just a man being sad for an hour.
So this isn't a bad album. I mean, it's Frank Sinatra after all and his voice is timeless. Just these songs are not some of my favorites from him. It is a very melancholy record and just doesn't show the same swagger and fun that some of his other albums do. That said, his voice is strong throughout this and the musicians are great. I just can't see this as being something I would return to often.
Frank doesn't do a lot for me. His song are good, but it's not my preferred genre
I can see the appeal. Sinatra was "cool", and so was this album. So much classic, mid century aspirational imagery here. It isn't the most exciting music, though, and I can't help but find all of the Rat Pack (and most men from that era) a bit gross. That's probably a criticism that could be levelled at most of the men on this list, but it is what it is. I don't feel the vicarious, aspirational feelings that I think this is supposed to evoke.
Probably the beat album of the 50s, I don't like it a massive amount but it's definitely very solid and Frank obviously has a pretty great voice. The instrumentation doesn't really do much for me though.
Meget behageligt.
Never listened to a Sinatra album before. Playing this through, I was struck that he could certainly sing, but I didn't find the songs very interesting. So, I read some Wikipedia etc, re the album and Sinatra generally. I had had a strong impression of Sinatra from the cipher character in The Godfather , I feel after more reading that was probably not inaccurate take on the guy at level of character, eg unattractive aspects of Italian-American machismo. What about the album? I saw a comment that it had a broader emotional palette than was commonly 'acceptable' for mainstream men at the time. So there's points of interest, but I don't really want to go back and listen more, but I do recognise some quality in this Sinatra album. So it's Okay (Not Good), 4/10.
Great accompaniment for a famous crooner.
p22. 1953. 3 stars. On the plus side, we have THAT voice, Nelson Riddle's production, and some of the greatest moments from the American Songbook. Set against that are filler and the fact it's single paced - 16 songs of heartbreak is a bit too much for anyone.
Frank was feeling some feelings
Italian restaurant feel, classic and slow
I've never been much of Sinatra fan. His voice is beautiful without a doubt. I will not deny his talent, but all of his songs are very much the same. Lots of yearning, bordering on desperation at times, but for the most part kind of romantic in a "dancing in a black and white romance movie" kind of way. I get some decent enjoyment out of it. Just wish it didn't all sound the same.
What a voice that man had
Expected a bit more from the man
It’s a good album, but not on the daily for me. Good record for a chill day on the background or Christmas season.
favorites: in the wee small hours of the morning; i see your face before me; what is this thing called love?
Sad boi 50's crooning. Not the best or most impressive Sinatra album, but still decent music. Kinda hard to believe that one of the biggest sex symbols of his age could pull off an album featuring themes of sadness and depression over how he can't get a gal and get laid.
Man:/, I don't think this is the best that the 50s have to offer. However it IS music!
Previously rated: #568 - Songs For Swingin' Lovers! (4/5) #1,003 - Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (3/5) **************************************************************** Album #1,032 More very well sung sentimental crooner stuff. It's good for certain moods. I only knew the title track going in, though not Sinatra's version, and it's probably the best track here.
A very consistent tone of heartbreak which could easily have dragged, but I found myself more drawn into it as it went on. A more vulnerable Frank without any brashness - I appreciated that
5/10
classic Sinatra & Riddle, althoughone-dimensional, nice songs & arrangements
Pretty much what I expected. An hour of the same jazzy songs with Sinatras smooth voice.
Great voice and vibe. I really liked the titular In the wee small hours, I'll be around, and this love of mine. Everything else was a lil slow for my taste.
Weather a hot cup of coffee on a winter morning or a glass of scotch at the end of a long day - this album apparently needs liquid to go along with it. Here's the thing - after the drink is done, so is all of the fun with this one. I mean what more is there to say - of time/place/feeling - this is untouchable. It is of course, the same song over and over again and doesn't have the same musicianship of pop music that comes later.
My second Sinatra album (first was Songs for Swinging Lovers.) This one seems really melancholic, which I like the idea of, and concept, and all that side of stuff, though the actual songs themselves sadly weren't great. So not great and me being so not interested, resulted in one the relatively rare times where I couldn't tell you what the previous track melody or lyrics consisted of even though I'm listening to just the very next track, though that was only for like 60-70% of the album. Highlight Song/s: "Mood Indigo", "Ill Wind" and "Dancing on the Ceiling"
Amazing voice, an album full of nice songs. Plays nicely in the background for me.
Slow and atmospheric. Charming but mild
The usual orchestral and jazz tinged backings accompany Frank’s almost spoken vocals - remains eternally popular
Frank is great but this album isn't. Too slow, too morose, not enough variability.
Great voice and classy but pretty repetitive and too long for that. 3.5
Absolutely deserves to be on the list because of the significance of creating albums. But it's a bit meh and the same. Not bad but nothing noteworthy
Morose from ol' Blue eyes. Surprisingly mopey but somewhat lacking in self reflection. Intimate but shallow with a nice voice. Feels like Christmas even though it is not. No picks, they're all very similar.
I love Frank Sinatra but a whole album of sad boi in one sitting is a bit much.
Oh hey, it's album #0001! I vaguely remember listening to In the Wee Small Hours during my first 1001 Albums attempt, but I guess it didn't leave that much of an impression. By no fault of Mr. Sinatra (who, needless to say, has a great voice), I have a really hard time engaging with this album. The music is so ubiquitous that it's almost like ambient audio to me – completely harmless, pleasant background noise that does a pretty good job filling the silence at a get-together or while doing chores. I guess the main problem is that the more I pay attention to it, the less I feel like I'm getting out of it. The lyrics/music aren't particularly challenging and the songs more or less all sound the same, so giving it your complete and undivided attention is almost doing it a disservice. As a result, I ended up blissfully half-listening to In the Wee Small Hours for the majority of its runtime and letting my ears perk up at the occasional clever line or instrumental solo (the trumpet solo on "Ill Wind" was a highlight all on its own). If I ever listen to it again, it'll probably be in a fashion where I can just soak in its atmosphere and not truly perceive it. I'm sure this was a mindblowing album in 1955 though! Highlights: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, I See Your Face Before Me, Can't We Be Friends, Ill Wind, I'll Never Be the Same
Probably the single best collection of slower and more boozy Frank Sinatra songs.
A collection of timeless melodies of heartbreak. It’s nice, but the blues are better at invoking those feelings in my opinion.
Not My Favorite of his but still great
2.5
3.0
Hard to have an opinion of this really. Sure it's fine, but so bland. Maybe that's just time.
I do love Frank’s voice. But this could’ve been half as long. 3/5
Too long! Too samey! Nice music, but I don't think I ever need to listen to a whole album of Frank again. Some of these songs are very good, and could be highly romantic in the right context. That context is not surrounded by other equally dramatic romantic songs
Fine
Pleasant enough as background, but nothing more. 2.5
Omertà
Fine but was thinking there'd be a few more of his well known songs
It’s alright but a bit samey and very maudlin. Cheer up Frank!
Favourite Songs: Mood Indigo
I actually listened to this in the wee small hours one day to give it the best shot it could have and I remain full of respect, but still didn’t turn the corner on loving Sinatra.
I dunno, I used to like some Sinatra but I don't think this is the Sinatra I used to like. Harmless, though.
3.5/5 Really great but repetitive
tony soprano mode
gorgeous voice, overlong record.
solid listenable
I do kinda feel like Frank Sinatra is just Hallmark Chet Baker. Almost too saccharine.
Close your eyes and clear your mind. Now picture Frank Sinatra. And add in what he sounds like singing. That is this album. Vintage Sinatra.
Though Sinatra's voice is still pleasant as always, the instrumentals this time didn't vary as much and didn't particularly age well, nor did they vary enough for me personally.
This is 50s sad boi music. Hard not to listen to Sinatra and hear Christmas/wintery vibes music.
Mellow Sinatra, beautiful and moving but all of the songs sounded the same, so it was a little dull
It's Sinatra. Great singer.
Not my usual sort of thing, but he does what he does very well, and I found this quite moving despite it feeling a bit sentimental at first. Some dreadful rhymes though.
Good
Didn't realize Sinatra was making concept albums back in the 50s... It's really good but definitely quite long for what it is. Instrumentals and vocals are all very smooth and it's a very easy listen if not super compelling throughout.
Understand that this is a seminal album, and the skill behind it - but Sinatra, like golf, isn't really my thing.
More of a song artist for me
Old Blue Eyes is rather sad on this one. Good to listen to on a rainy day but every song sounds the same rye deeper you go into the album.
Soothing, repetitive, sad early concept album. Musical sleeping pill for sad boys.
Standouts - But all of these sound the same In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning
Lovely smooth voice, sounds like Christmas. Unfortunately there are way too many songs that all sound the same
I assumed this would be one of the earlier "Frank" albums, but somehow was his NINTH already. Distinctive voice that undoubtedly changed what was to come, but hard to love an entire album of it.
Relaxing and smooth, but not really exciting. Definitely sets a mood!
6 Frank don’t do it for me
This probably hit soooo crazy if the person you were going steady with ghosted you in 1955
Enjoyed listening to and reading about the significance of this album.
Kind of sleepy, but pretty arrangements. Seems like the sadness is part of the concept, cemented by the cool album cover. Great vibes, but I don't think I'll remember the songs individually
frank, who hurt you? the arrangements make it a 3 but my goodness so many songs about heartbreak and longing that i could only picture myself listening to this again under a pile of 100 blankets with a giant glass of wine to numb the pain.
One of those artists where it's easy to see why they were as popular as they were.
This one is very cool in concept, cover and singing etc, but fast upbeat frank is generally the most captivating, and a bit missed on this one .
Quaint
Look…Frank Sinatra is great. Who doesn’t love Frank Sinatra. But I do not listen to Frank Sinatra on purpose. It’s like asking someone to rate bread.
Of course he has a beautiful voice. Could be nice lounge music for today, but too sad and boring.
the chairman of the board
This album is not what I expected from Frank. This subdued album, which is aptly named, feels like an intimate moment or conversation in the hours between night and morning. It’s not exciting, but it is sincere and introspective.
I never listen to a frank sinatra album. Frank is always about his voice and his songs more than any one album. I do like this album but it's not something I would choose first to listen to.
It was nice but his voice is way too distinguishable. I prefer less dominant voices. Not my cup of tea. Maybe could be listened in winter snow.
nöd schlecht, aber alles tönt echli glich
A bit emo, Mr. Sinatra. That said, this is the classic, beautiful crooning I expect from him.
A bit maudlin for my tastes, even when I'm feeling maudlin myself. Still, quite pleasant and listenable.
It’s definitely Sinatra. But it’s really only Sinatra. On his ninth album, I hoped he would have broadened his horizons, especially given how capable his voice is. But I suppose musical innovation was not really appreciated in the 50s and records gotta sell.
Overall quite nice, one of these old school albums that is basically a collection of songs. 3/5
Not my jam
Heard Frank Sinatra before, so knew what to expect sound wise. Nobe of the songs I already knew were on the album but it was enjoyable and met expectations
I happen to love Frank Sinatra. I think his vocals, simple though they may sometimes be, are incredibly clear and filled with emotion. He may not have been the best vocalist ever to have lived, but he knew what was right for each song he recorded and performed. So the, it makes a lot of sense that he felt he could put together a series of albums for different moods, different situations, and different feelings. I'll tell you that I don't always love his ballads. I think that, while beautiful, they don't always grab me like his other, more jazzy numbers do. I like the fun, swingin' sound of vocal jazz, not the overdone and drawn out ballads. They're often too slow and seem to demand that the listener take a journey with them. They're far from easy listening at times. So an album full of these "adult contemporary" tracks, wallowing in self-pity and longing for a lost love didn't really appeal to me off the bat, even if Sinatra was the man behind it. But I do have to say, it's a great album. The production and arrangements of each track do feel somewhat dated (Nelson Riddle does have a very specific sound, doesn't he?), but they work because we know they're a time capsule. Overall I'd say the album has aged well enough, and is still worth a listen. But as much as I love Frankie, as much as I love his voice and as much as I love Nelson Riddle, there are only so many ballads I can take before they start to blend together and the album starts to feel repetitive. And for that, the album gets a solid (but to me, disappointing) three stars. Standout Tracks: Deep in a Dream, Can't We Be Friends?, When Your Lover Has Gone
It was enjoyable, but by the half way point it all felt repetative.
One of my mum's favourites, this is enjoyable and listening to it at work today my colleague said it sounded like Michael Bublé and therefore Christmassy (I pointed out that it's the other way round). I can't help but be influenced by the fact he was a fairly awful mafia tool, but still I can appreciate his importance as a singer performer.
It can be a bit repetitive, but still very nice, overall.
This was more emotional and melancholy than I expected but it’s mostly about love so I guess that tracks.
I'm not the biggest Sinatra fan but this album was okay. Is it the oldest album on the list? I think it might be.
You know what you're getting with Frank. This was cozy.
wie man sich sinatra halt vorstellt haha
What can I say? It's Frankie
Nothing objectionable about Ol' Blue Eyes, but his music doesn't particularly move me either. I guess it does transport me back to a time long before my birth. Dude has a silky smooth voice and is backed by perfectly adequate musicians. It's the kind of thing I recall my grandmother singing around the house as she was doing chores and such. So I'll give it at least a 3 for the nostalgia factor. I mean, I really can't say anything bad about it honestly. 3/5 #188
Sinatra is obviously a great singer, but this album wasn't my favorite as a project and I'd rather listen to a compilation of his than an album as it doesn't hold a lot as a project to me
So the idea of the first concept album is Frank's Sad. It seems a bit lazy but it was a different time. Which is exactly what this album sounds like. Frank's the best crooner that there is & his voice sells it but alot of these are dull & boring. The music behind him is fine but it sounds like I'm watching a Disney movie. But again from a different time. I'm giving a 3 if only for Frank's voice & showmanship.
Ihan ok. Sinatraa. 2,5/5.
Hee hee
Hes a legendary song writer and performer but I feel like some of the music here is one note
I think that it is a great album but I do agree with people that almost an hour of sad love songs is kinda much. Still a great album
Classic
What a voice
It's Sinatra, I get it. I mostly hear him from a loudspeaker in NYC or during the Christmas season. It was good to hear a full album. Song by song, theyre great. Maybe in a playlist. But a whole hour of it is boring and drones on. 1950's Drake sad boy.
Croon croon croon
The other one was better this is just too sad
Sleepy Time Tea music
Difficult tho he may have been, this man’s voice takes me places. High three.
3.5 Immediately thought of the Nighthawks painting when listening to this. Maybe it was the music but the album cover does share a similar aesthetic, maybe thats where I drew the comparison. I prefer swingin Frank but this was good too, deserves a deeper dive at some point
It's a decent enough album. Frank isn't a hard sell though. The music is muted and the lyrics are....well the same. Dude misses his girl, or want to get with a girl or love. So. Much. Love. It's fairly repetitive and if it wasn't Sinatra I don't think it would be on the list. There are a few songs that are stand outs. Overall worth listening to if you want to hear Sinatra. Honestly though find a greats hits album its a better bet.
Not bad 3
Listening to this album takes me right back to my university years in Ankara. There was a café called Academia where this music was always in the air, and I have fond memories of trios and quartets playing his songs there. While you can truly hear the struggle and heavy emotion in Sinatra's voice, I find it hard to relate to personally. That kind of intense heartache feels like it belongs more to teenage years than to adulthood. Still, as my first full Sinatra album, I feel lucky to have started with such a classic.
monotonous. great voice and appreciable piano accompaniment that i am envious of.
Very nice easy listening.
FAVO: In the wee small hours,
Great album, makes me sleepy though.
Sounds like getting dumped in the dead of winter while it’s already snowy, cold and miserable. Sinatra is always perfection but this one is served with a heaping side of depression.
I'll admit that it's a very good crooner album, I just don't like crooning that much. I don't hate it, but it's a style that is still figuring out how microphones work.
Good. Very situational. Do not listen while operating heavy machinery.
I found that Frank can sing better when he was younger. It turned into speak singing as he aged (and got more drunk, I assume)
The album has the warm, festive feel of a Christmas record, but the artistry and swagger are pure Sinatra. It's as if Jay-Z dropped a jazz album.
72% Best: Mood Indigo; Ill Wind Must-Hear? No
Seems a shame to listen to Frank Sinatra while in reviewing submissions and writing reports on a Thursday morning. Makes the time go by pleasantly, I must say. Too many songs about heartbreak? Olivia Rodrigo begs to differ. Regardless, I can't find anything wrong with this. It's quite good at times. Solid three.
I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. I appreciated some of the musicality but otherwise got a bit bored of the big-band sounds and heavy Sinatra vibrato. I like that it was a concept album and I think the lyrics were touching at times.
I love me some Frank and was excited to see this album pop up because I haven’t heard anything off of this and it forced me to do a deep Frank dive. There were certainly some highlights on this album (loved Glad to Be Unhappy, definitely adding to the Frank rotation) and of course love and heartbreak always lends to a good concept album. However I did feel it was a bit too slow for my taste so I think a solid 3 is the rating here.
Fine voice, neat arrangements but somewhat dated.
Good but not really my thing.
Sinatra made better.
7/10. Unless I am mistaken, this is the oldest album in the generator. It's a standard jazz album. I like it. I would have loved to see Yma Sumac in the generator. Regardless, this album is good! :)
Frank has a great voice. It really is hard to listen to this fairly. I hear him sing and I just think Christmas music. It does almost seem like the music and the singing aren’t connected, like anything could be playing in the background.
His voice is great, could leave this on for hours and wouldn't necessarily get bored but also didn't hold my attention for very long as all the songs are so slow, glad to have heard it, but won't go back
Enjoyed this as much as I enjoy Sinatra. Great voice but a bit over-engineered and similar to every other Sinatra song. Didn’t grow up on his music so I don’t have the rose-colored glasses on, 3/5 very generic
Not for me
I wish it weren't entirely ballads/sad "I've been dumped" songs
Crudo
that’s nice i guess. i like the title track and ‘i get along…’ but i just like those songs in general, i’m not particularly devoted to sinatra’s versions.
idk i didn't really care. too overly smooth for me it actually starts to annoy me after awhile.
It's the first album in the list! A comeback album of sorts, listening to this album is kind of like the moody version of hanging out with the guy from your high school who has just done it all. It's very impressive, but it's very much a lot of the same. Loads of talent right in your face and it doesn't relent. This kind of makes me appreciate album composition and the decision-making that goes into making a tracklist. I would hazard to guess that very few people have actually listened to the entirety of this album (at least on spotify). The play numbers for each song drop one after the other, with a drop from 7 figures to 6 between tracks 1 and 2. It's a shame too because both the vocals here and the instrumentals are great, it's a warm album about feeling cold. But it is unyielding in its constant misery. It was hard to pick highlights for this album because it really does blend into one big stew of misery. I enjoyed this, but it is a tiresome experience. Some albums benefit from a focused listen, especially a concept album like this. Unfortunately the concept of this album is "things didn't work out with Ava and I". I don't enjoy listening to sob stories about relationships at the best of times and I don't care how nice Sinatra's voice is, fuck me mate just go out and get drunk or something (apparently he was also a very aggressive drunk, my comment still stands). This is an album to put on in the background of a dinner party (NO BIG LIGHT) in the middle of winter, everyone is rugged up and seated ready to eat what is about to be the most mid fucking pasta you've ever had that you bravely swallow, look the host directly in the eye and say "Yeah mate, it's good." Highlights: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, Glad To Be Unhappy
I love Frank. I did not really get into this one.
To me this is a 3/5 but also a 5/5. The songs are melancholic, slow and quite frankly often overdramatic in the worst ways. But still, there is something about Frank's presence and sound that fill me with a nostalgic bliss from Christmas mornings with his music. This isn't my favorite album of his but it still carries some of that magic as a whole. "This Love of Mine"'s strings were my favorite part of the album.
Couldn't get into this one. Pleasant background music
It was a bit too emo
Frank had a lovely voice and he knew how to use it, you can't argue with that. But I'm just never ever going to decide 'I fancy listening to some vocal jazz today', and this album has done nothing to change that. It's very good at being what it is. It's just not for me.
Pretty good, tho all sounded the same to me
Is frank sinatra a fantastic singer, absolutely. Is this album about the same topic the whole way through yeah.
frank is frank, right?
This album was recorded while Frank still had his voice, and it is smooth as silk. Not at all the kind of music that would make its way onto my turntable, but it does capture an important artist near his peak.
Sinatra’s voice is smooth as a velvet tuxedo and the lyrics cut like a stiletto dipped in bourbon. The orchestration? Masterful—like a soft jazz hug for your heartbreak. This is a mood album through and through: poetic, melancholic, and emotionally rich. Did I admire it? Absolutely. Did I feel things? For sure. But by track 6, I also found myself checking how many “wee small hours” were left.
Another album where I have very neutral feelings. I’m never going to complain about listening to Frank, but I’m also never going to choose to listen to Frank.
Not generally a fan of his, but the Nelson Riddle arrangements are pretty cool. This came out 6 weeks before I was born.
Jazz bar atmosphere all the way. Frank Simpnatra was clearly going through it, less range than I expected, but he belts it out loud and proud
Heartbreaks and orchestras. Frank was a wee sad boye for this one. But you won't mistake this project for someone else. Funny that it was basically a double album mixtape of cover versions and one original lyrics by Sinatra himself. Yank it loud.
The material is a little soporific in places, but this album really demonstrates the masterful level of of control Sinatra had over his voice. Not a note out of place, perfect timing. The guy could sing, no doubt.
Nice but every song sounded exactly the same. If I wanted to listen to a Frank Sinatra record it would not be this one.
Frank is legend but this album is kind of a snooze fest.. All the songs sound almost identical. The music is good its just not all that interesting. Favorite track: In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning 3.5/5
Good time and place. Great voice of course
La mejor cancio "Can we be friends"
It’s fine? I do t really care about Sinatra. I don’t think I’ve ever found myself wanting to listen to l e of his albums and this didn’t change my mind
Just some slow love songs with good vocals. 3 stars
Classic Frank. The guy was a legend for a reason.
Beautiful voice, of course, but I didn’t really enjoy the actual songs.
Not one of Frank Sinatra’s better albums this is quite melancholy all the way through, no stand out tracks.
3/5 Kuuntelee mielellään, kyllä poika laulaa osaa. Ei kuitenkaan ihan sellainen kiekko, jota tulisi laitettua levylautaselle tämän aktiivisesti.
Olihan hienoa kuultavaa.
i dont remember anything
Never heard a Sinatra album in full before. Doesn't "wee" already mean small? 3/5
Good album kinda is what it is
Oh. My. GOD. This was boring. Every single song had the literal same exact message, same exact tempo, and same exact tune. And it went on FOR FIFTY MINUTES. He did not know when to let something go. I would say I'm glad he got dumped, but then again, THIS is what we got out of it. One song is okay, JUST okay, but any longer than that, and I'm dead.
Barely held my attention but nice enough
I never listened to a Sinatra album all the way through. Not sure this one counts since I had to pause it and unpause through the work day. You think you know a lot of his stuff just from being surrounded by it, but he's got such a deep bench. It's fine. Not something I'd go out of my way to listen to.
Not a huge fan of the crooners. I respect the talent I suppose, but it does nothing for me. OK as background music.
Ah sad Frank... I don't really care much for crooners but this was ok to listen to while working.
Get why it’s here, but this is just kind of background noise, especially compared to Sinatra’s other album on the list.
Crooner classics
He's not like an actual great singer but the voice is still iconic.
A luscious wallow
Smooth brain rhyme schemes from a hopelessly befuddled man, so utterly defeated and exploited by the nuances of love that he occasionally must appeal to the divine to help him get up to speed with the basics. All of this wrapped up in a fantastically dulcet package. The backing tracks are always dope. I bet every time he wandered up to a stage or into a vocal booth and picked up a mic with a martini in his hand, someone would say, "Uh oh, ol' Frank is at it again. Should we get someone to drive him home?" And someone else would say, "Nah, let him cook"....and thus, a star was born. Frankie is the man.
Favorite Track: What Is This Thing Called Love
I feel like I am eating endless salad and breadsticks at the Olive Garden
I've never intentionally listened to Frank Sinatra, but have read the story behind this a few times. It tends to catch my eye because it's the first album in the book. It's another one that's hard to judge by today's standards, as it sounds so very of it's time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I found it pretty hard to relate to in general. It's pleasant enough to listen to, but a bit too long and fairly repetitive. Great voice though, and very well recorded for the time!
Beautiful and laid back Sinatra record. It's got some nice moments but tends to keep within the same boundaries of tempo and energy levels, which I both enjoyed and also found a little repetitive. It's a 3.5 for me, not quite enough for a 4. I'm not sure why but as I went through this album I didn't find enough variety for me to totally love it. I do love the album cover. To me it's reminiscent of the painting "Nighthawks".
Not my favourite. Appreciate the maudlin tone of the album, but the song selections were repetitive. When Your Lover Has Gone, and Ill Wind, were my favourites.
Entspannende Atmosphäre für abends
"This love of mine goes on and on..." like this album. I can respect the historical significance of this album now that I'm aware of it, but after a while it feels repetitive. I lost interest somewhere in the second half. It sounds fine, and I'm sure fans of Sinatra would love it. Between this and Swinging Lovers it's clear I'm not a fan. I don't mind listening to his songs when mixed in with other artists, but alone he doesn't do much for me. I'd rather watch him act.
Typischer Frank Sinatra Sound, eher was für n chilligen Wohnzimmer Abend vorm Kamin.
One of these days, I'll have to get myself a hat, go on a long, sad walk and put on this album. It's pleasant, but I'd agree with the fact that it's mostly one-tone. Very strong 3. Maybe a 4. Maaaybe a 5.
Franks voice is so distinctive, and has been around for so long that it rather fades into the audio deja vue. This was a quite revolutionary record of its time, but alas, age has dulled it effect. It's almost background shopping muzak now. That's a pity, it is clearly a work of an important artiste.
I do enjoy Sinatra and this is overall a good album, but it's just a bit too slow, too weepy for me. Every song is pretty much about the same thing, which I understand is the point, but it just kind of carries on after you are a few songs in. Great Sinatra, probably not in my regular rotation.
I like Sinatra, but it’s really inescapable that it’s all the same. I suppose that’s what makes him so magical.
⭐⭐⭐ 5/10 Good, but dated
Pretty good, never listened to a full Sinatra album in full before
Great Voice! This man is just a blessing to listen to. His music, although sad, was very good to listen to. Someone said it always sounds like Christmas music and I can definitely agree with that.
Frankie in his prime….
Yeah, it's Frank Sinatra and he has a beautiful, emotive voice and all that, but I found this album to be pretty boring and too long. The vibes are pretty dour. There are some songs worth keeping, but the overall feeling is that I'm in a sad bar watching a sad cabaret singer and I want to go home. 6/10
Dude can sing. King of the crooners. Arrangements are nice too. Though I'm not sure what makes any of his albums better or worse than the others. They're all pretty much the same schtick. It'll always just be dinner music to me.
Tämähän oli kivaa musisointia, etenkin alkupuolisko albumista.
what a voice! though this sort of slow soul isnt my thing i can see its appeal.
So sad, Frank. Why?
The ability to take a group of songs from the Great American Songbook from over 20 songwriters and craft them into such a cohesive album is an impressive feat. Sinatra may be boring, but the mood he and his collaborators create on “In The Wee Hours” is rich and melancholy.
Frank's got a lovely set up pipes unfortunately the slow mournful vibe of the album not really working for me today (maybe because its sunny).
Frank's silky smooth croon is front and center here, supported by orchestral arrangements sometimes cool and jazzy and sometimes lush and sweeping. The album truly does evoke a late night feeling, sitting up in the dark with a cigarette, wondering where it all went wrong, or debating whether to dial up the 1950's version of a booty call.
Frank's voice sounds great. A real crooner. This album really shows a different approach and era of music. I liked it, however a lot of the songs began to have a very similar feel to them for me, and halfway through started to feel a bit repetitive.
Cute.
Not an album stacked with classic Sinatra standards - but still, I want to light some candles, put this on and make sweet sweet love to my baby.
• 3/5 • aside from being morose and sleepy, I couldn’t say this album was any real innovation or break from The Chairman’s prior or subsequent work • it’s a testament to Old Blue Eyes’ voice and artistry that a downbeat album consisting solely of covers could be considered for this list (and still earn 3 stars from me) • if it were one of his Xmas albums I’d give it 5 stars!
Not enough variety on this album, just gentle songs, lacking the swing you expect from Sinatra.
I recognize the talent and how iconic this is, but again not my jam. Kind of a huge bummer, would fit if I was cosplaying a 50s cocktail party. 3*
It’s OK.
太困了
Masterful singing by Sinatra, but every song being about heartbreak starts to get old as this goes on.
Sinatra! What a legendary voice. This was smooth and melancholy.
Great singer but not my thing, 3
I understand why it’s here. Probably not the best thing to listen to at the gym. I wouldn’t seek this out, but it’s good.
Classic Frank. Not something I could listen to every day. But it’s good to be reminded of his great voice. 3.5
Frank Sadnatra
He needs to get new subject matter stat
Not my favorite Frank album... it drags a bit at times, but it is Frank...
Can one listen to this apart from xmas?
I love Sinatra so much, his voice is just stunning. Very moody and mopey. Sets a mood. Perfect album to melt into the couch to. Very samey. Snooze after the title track, sadly. Sorry Frank!
Great voice!!
One of the better Sinatra albums
The Good: my first ´ol blue eyes album on this list. The Bad: it isn´t what I would call a good one. The Ugly: it made me feel ´ol myself… Seriously, I was all excited that my Sunday was being blessed by an album of one of the greatest singers in modern music… and after a couple of songs, as well as several images of a Scorcese movie flashing through my mind, I was done thinking about how to clip the next wiseguy… Tedious after a while. Yet, if you add any of these songs to a random playlist you would be more than happy to be listening to it… now that´s what I call irony. 3* which should be 4 1/2
Honk mimimimi honk mimimimi not unpleasant tho
Gorgeous vocals over Tom and Jerry type beats
I like Frank Sinatra. This wasn’t my favorite album of his, but there were some hidden gems. This is very calming to me and it’s peaceful. And what’s wrong with Long Island?
Good. Very nice
So Sinatra is under represented on this list, with In The Wee Small Hours just the second album of his we've had through 950+, but this one isn't really one of his better works. His voice and style is, as always, super comforting and evocative of all the sorts of places and settings and moods that you associate with him, but it's an hour of him being woe is me about break-ups and love lost, and doesn't have any of his hits. The title track is beautiful, the album itself is just fine and a solid middling 3 because of how remarkable his voice really is, but I want and expect more from a must-listen Sinatra record.
Very smooth, easy to listen too, and much more melancholy than most of the Sinatra I've listened to before. His voice is absolutely brilliant, but it's just a bit much. 16 tracks of more or less unrelenting beautiful misery is quite hard work. One to have on in the background on a rainy day when you've just been through a breakup, a comfortable 3 because of his voice, but nothing more than that. 3/5.
Frank is amazing on everything recorded in the 50s and much of what he recorded through the 60s. But of all of the albums with Nelson Riddle, this one is my least favorite. Riddle is so good at arranging big band horns and their swing collaborations both before and after this one continue to be some of the most mind-blowing music ever recorded. But Riddle's string arrangements sound trite to me; like mediocre film scores from the era. And these arrangements cause Frank to deliver over-theatrical, almost melodramatic performances. The jazz is all but gone; replaced by Welk-like pop that bores me.
Frank Sinatra's music reminds me of movie music from the 50s. That's no coincidence, of course. After all, he also made a lot of film music. Listening to this music gives me the sleepy feeling of a Sunday afternoon on TV in rainy fall weather. It's quite nice and cozy. But I won't be listening to it more often. 3/5
Frank in good form but not his best work so a 3.5 for me
Generally a fan but prefer later era Sinatra with more swing jazz influence. This is a bit too straight.
why he is the godfather.
Captures a nice vibe, and was a nice accompaniment on a night drive through suburbia, but ultimately a very samey set of songs without many standouts of note. 2.9/5
This had me feeling like I was Deep In a Dream. I’ll Never Be the Same.
Not my type but fine i guess.
It could be a 2, it could be a 4. Hard to tell. It's good but it's kinda the same song for 50 minutes. 58/100
It’s good background noise. My biggest gripe with crooners is that all their songs sound basically the same.
A legend, but these songs bled together and dragged on after a while. Strongest emotion I felt was nostalgia for Christmas. 3.
Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
His bio has very hyperbolic language, but I predict a three.
Favorite Track: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning
I did like this more than another we listened to. The album feels more personal. It does feel a bit long and repetitive but I liked having it on. Could just be me but I think I'd enjoy just having this on versus really actively listing.
Ooooh, here's a rarity - a 50s album. Of course it sounds dated in 2024, it will be 70 years old next year. But Frank Sinatra's voice is timeless - no matter that I'm not blown away by the music this is an album that absolutely deserves to be listened to just for the significance of the artist.
I've always enjoyed Sinatra's (movie) acting more than I expected to, but I've always hard a hard time enjoying his singing and music as much as I know I should (in part because so many of his songs sound like they're part of a movie musical/soundtrack). I'm sure this is a good Sinatra album--in fact, both Wikipedia and the "1001 Albums" book can't overemphasize what a great album this is, how it's the first "concept" album, and even how it's the first (12" LP) album ever--but sadly too much of Sinatra's more-mature and more-emotional style are lost on me, although I did appreciate how brief and succinct the songs are. Sorry, Frank!
Apparently, I'm not a big fan of Frank Sinatra.
Sure it’s Frank, but it’s not all that memorable.
I like Sinatra in general, but this album is kind of a snooze fest.
Favourite Song: What Is This Thing Called Love
Thoughts before listening: Frank Sinatra is great. I mean thats a pretty obvious statement I guess, but I feel like he often gets overlooked by younger generations because he represents such an outdated style of music. I do know that in general this album is the one of his that is most often praised by modern music journalists. I don't believe I have heard this all the way through, but I am excited to give it a listen. Review: What is often overlooked with Sinatra is just how good his bands are. Of course everyone knows that Sinatra has a great, iconic voice, but his band is really setting the mood throughout this album. And this album is quite the mood. This is slow, introspective Sinatra ballads with piano leading the way and plenty of strings to set the mood. This is definitely an album where I can see the talent, but I don't necessarily love what I'm hearing. Its too melancholy and slow for me, but I am glad to have listened to this. I think this is 2 Sinatra albums now where I didn't enjoy listening to the album. Maybe I'm just a Sinatra greatest hits guy...or maybe I just like upbeat, swinging Sinatra. Anyway, I'm giving this 3-stars.
ah, the inimitable soothing sound of ol’ blue eyes. while some of the lyrics feel kind of hokey and dated, some of them are strangely specific (the lyric about orange juice in one of the songs comes to mind). but my main takeaway from this listen is how depressing this album is… he seems so sad either about his woman leaving him or how he misses her. there’s a song where he sings about how she can always come back to him if it doesn’t work out with her current man. but that voice. what a voice.
A time machine to a better tome
It's obviously quality music. Played well, sung well. I just wasn't in the mood for this today. And most days. I don't have the patience. Favorite song: glad to be unhappy
7/10 Intro best song
A bit of a sleepy, melancholy vibe, but musically on point. Frank is in perfect voice here. My main critique is the song selections, many of which aren't particularly memorable. Fave Songs: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, I'll Be Around, Mood Indigo, I See Your Face Before Me, Can't We Be Friends?
jævli kjedelig
This is a slow burn album, a very slow burn. Best suited for fine dining or the soundtrack to a black and white movie that was just recently discovered and it had no soundtrack. This isn’t meant to be listened to at 530am during a work week. On a positive note: Franks voice is on point and the music is perfect for the genre. I just have to dip out early on this one.
OK I guess.
2.6
Coffee & book.
6/12/24. Classic Frank. Easy listening at its finest.
1. Album is monotone, a collection of songs regarding heartbreak. 2. Might be fatiguing for some people. 3. An album you might play and let it play in the background while doing something else.
Decent listen, but it’s not Sinatra’s best album imo
He sure does have a good voice, what a crooner. Fave. Mood Indigo
The only time I ever actively listened to Frank Sinatra was at the dentist. I listened to this on an airplane. I liked it. But I can’t remember a thing about it.
All the songs sound the same except like 2, however they did sound good but all blended together and it was too long. But i can't complain too much because i didn't hate it and the songs on their own are decent
I get what he was trying to do - this sounds a lot like a concept album. I think too many of the songs were similar to each other.
This is sad and pining and is probably a good album but not fun to listen to.
3 Fine, calm, jazzy,
Classic. Listened to this over the weekend. He is so good.
Okay yes they are all the same song but it's nice.
100% Frank Sinatra. The iconic sound is hard to miss, and this album delivers.
Wow, Frank, that’s a lovely voice you’ve got there. What’s that? You’re going to sing a slow song about heartbreak and pining? That was really lovely! Oh, there’s more? Beautiful! What other tricks do you have up your sleeve? Ah, more love songs? You shouldn’t have!
Fran Sinatra is a legend with a huge influence on music and impact on pop culture. “In The Wee Small Hours” is a slow and depressing concept album featuring themes of loss, heartbreak, and loneliness. While this album is acclaimed by many, this listener thinks this album did not age well.
He crooned his way through a heartbreak. Very depressing. A year later he moves to singing swing, which we know him so well for. This one is alright.
This was one sad song about heartbreak extended over an entire album. Funny to think about how masculine/macho/machismo we think about this time period and how cool Sinatra was, juxtaposed against him crooning being a sad sack loveless loser for an hour. 2.5
