Reviews (page 6 of 8)

A quick album, but really quite good! This album is a little bluesy, a little psychedelic, a little hard rock, but it packs a nice punch! I had not heard this album in its entirety, but I'm a long time lover of Faces' song, "Stay With Me". I have always loved how scratchy Rod Stewart sounds on that track, and I was pleased to hear that carry through the whole album. During a transition period between psychedelic and hard rock, this album sits squarely between the two, and just simply makes for good listening. I'd do 3.5 if I could!

In general nice to listen to, but not very unique and thus a bit forgettable.

Best wel enjoyable ngl

You know what, The Faces are an amazing Greatest Hits band. Can’t put together a good album though.

Honestly unmemorable. Interesting I think? I liked the length though I just don’t really have much to say 😁 Pretty average but not terrible!

Decent bluesy-grimy rock very much akin to Stones - not the best but still in that very brief but excellent peak of Rod Stewart's; whether with Jeff Beck, solo, or here with the Faces, his output from c1969-1972 was generally top shelf. I often wonder why The Faces as a band didn't stick in the consciousness as much as other short-lived bands, like Free for example - similar blues-based gritty rock. This has always felt to me like - blasphemy alert - better Stones-type-music for people who didn't really get into the Stones (guilty). I guess we do have the [guitarist] Ron Wood connection between the two bands. Anyways it's not perfect, a little dated, and can get a little dull at times but overall a non-complex and fun listen, but the lack of more good actual songs has me wavering this down to a 3. More of a ... you're at a party and someone says "we need a soundtrack for early 70s music, whattya got?" and this is the answer. 6/10 3 stars.

touche top review.... touche.....

Early Rod Stewart is amazing

“Stay With Me” is probably the pinnacle of Faces along with “Oh La La”. With that being said, I didn’t really like any of the tracks here, but I still respect it.

Solid rock album. I really like the keyboard parts.

Raunchy blues from Rod Stewart and his band. It's not going to change anyone's life but it's fun for what it is.

Very dad rock, of the previous generation. Funky, but not my jam.

Elton John if he leaned into a more southern bluegrass thing. Stay with me is great, the rest of it is goodish. 2.5/5

Good Album overall. Not a huge fan of Rod Stewart, but some of the songs had high points.

Very good sounding record! Lyrics less impressive.

Need to listen again.

Fun and bluesy, lyrics meh

I'd never heard of this band and didn't know Rod Stewart was originally in an influential band. Though, I was never a big enough Rod Stewart fan to really follow his career. His voice has become familiar to me over the years though so it definitely helped the music overall having that familiarity to latch onto. It was also pretty cool to discover all the other bands these guys eventually made there way into as well. The Who, The Rolling Stones and Pete Townsend were all influenced by individual band members on some level. Pretty neat! On a musical level this is just good wholesome classic rock. Its groovy music with some solid riffs. There's not much to complain about here other than the fact that it's all pretty par for course here. None of these songs do anything that really seperate it from the rest of the music of this era. Despite having never heard of faces I finished this album feeling like I had heard all these songs before. It was good but I probably won't be returning to it anytime soon. Feels like I just need to turn on the classic rock station to get my fix of this genre of rock. It's a 3.5 for me but I'll probably round down to a 3 to really exemplify how plain this sounded in my opinion.

The "Stay With Me" album. Vocals sound a bit like Steven Tyler so I always thought it was an Aerosmith song. The other standout is "Memphis". Overall a decent rock album.

Apart from the massive "Stay with Me", I wasn't a big fan back in the day, even though a lot of my friends raved about this album. I'm still not a really big fan.

This was ok. Mostly very straight forward rock, with only a few interesting deviations from what seems like a very standard formula. I liked the variety of having Stewart and Lane trading off lead vocals. I might listen to this again; 2.5/5.

Not bad, Rod Stewart. That being said, nothing too amazing here. I still enjoyed it though. 3.25/5

a bunch of basic dated early Rod Stewart rock. not great not terrible but certainly forgettable

Generic, boring country with occasional blasting epicness.

3/9, 33%

Very stereotypical 70s blues/hard rock/roots rock. Basically another case of British white dudes attempting to make music like American black dudes. That being said, I don't think this is bad at all. I actually think it's ok. Not particularly challenging, but still ok. The production here is great too. Do I think it's a must-hear before you die? Probably not. It is still worth a listen if you're into 70s rock and/or classic rock. I also didn't realize Rod Stewart was the lead singer for this one? He's surprisingly not obnoxious here.

Snooze ville other than stay with me

Good fun in a 1970s, bluesy rock style. I felt bad for the vocalist who wasn't Rod Stewart, he's a hard act to follow so some songs were relatively disappointing.

Rod is altijd goed!

A Nod's as Good as a Wink... To a Blind Horse is the third album by British rock band Faces, and their second album of 1971. This was their most successful album worldwide and it was certified gold in the US in 1972. It's a blues rock album that sounded like a lot of fun to record and produce. I enjoyed this album and will be on the lookout for more albums by Faces. This is a classic rock album that everyone should give a listen to at least once.

One of the better British blues/rock albums from the late 60’s/early 70s and I have to admit the style of music here really suits Rod Stewarts gravelly voice. Ronnie Wood also sings 3 songs but isn’t as good a vocalist as he is guitarist. ‘Stay With Me’ is of course the key track and centrepiece of the album, and Stewart duly does it justice. ‘Miss Judy’s Farm’, ‘Too Bad’ and ‘That’s All You Need’ also rock pretty hard.

Good record but nothing special about the material. Rod Stewarts voice is peak to me in this era.

I preferred this band before Rod Stewart joined them. That being said this album was made before Stewart became as objectionable (to me at least) as he did later when he got to be a star.

Pretty good, liked some of the blues flavor

White boy blues rock, the Small Faces had so much more soul than this. Alright it's more rock n roll, a Clapton borefest this isn't. It's not that bad like, I don't dislike it, but it's rod Stewart and mostly what I'd expect from a band with him as lead. Love lives here. Stay With Me is good though. But very much reminds me of the Ronnie Wood era Stones, you know, the lions share of their career and after they stopped writing good songs. What makes me glad I've listened is the contributions from Ronnie Lane as a songwriter, particularly Debris. I listened to some of his stuff with Slim Chance earlier this year and it was definitely good. Very sad what happened to him with MS. That's All You Need funnily enough right at the end might just be the best thing here. That is a banger. Not sure about the steel drum at the end.

Pleasant entry from Rod and his mates. Some good stuff here.

Grupo de Rod Stewart. Rock de Rod Stewart.

very reminiscent of rod stewart, without the melodies. That's all you need didn't really need the steel drums.

Stay With Me is great, and the whole blues rock vibe is really strong. it's impressive that the result doesn't sound dated like a lot from this time period, just classic. Love Lives Here is my favorite.

70s plod all the way - Rod Stewart’s voice elevates it a little but not enough to make up for the amount of fuff present in this album. Not unpleasant listening mind you but meh

Another Rod Stewart project, another fine roots/blues rock album. There's nothing spectacular here, just some solidly written tunes, Stay With Me being the highlight.

Great Britrock album with some interesting ideas, not sure it will stick with me into the near future but enjoyed listening in the moment.

Not bad for a Rod Stewart Album

Average. I'll round up from 2.5 because I'm feeling generous.

Thats All You Need!!! What an awesome guitar riff, I was so sorry when Rod started singing over it. Stay With Me an absolute classic. I wouldn't be a fan of Rod Stewart on vocals, but the music overcomes his scratchy notes.

Very listenable! Rod Stewart before he turned pure shite and can def pick up on Ronnie Wood's playing.

This is a decent album. I really like some of Faces songs and the standout tracks on this one are great but aside from that, it kind of just feels like filler. Rod Stewart has a great voice and when Faces are hitting, I love the vibe of their music. Other times it just feels like generic blues rock, which I know a lot of these British rock bands were obsessed with. Standout Tracks: Miss Judy's Farm, You're So Rude, Stay With Me, Debris

Nice classic rock. 3/5

Grupo de Rod Stewart. Rock de Rod Stewart.

3.75/5 It kinda kills me to enjoy Rod Stewart this much cause of the "good old boys vibes" I get, but it kinda rocked. It felt like the epitome of Rock N' Roll. I liked the song Memphis the most, which is probably a cover, but the heart likes what it likes.

Ehhhh Rod Stewart... Not really my thing but didn't make me want to hot poker my ears out.

Odd, he couldn't find no remorse A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse Of course his technique was from a divine source Never knew the price of ice or what swine cost

A fun rock and rolling time, no complaints, no standouts throughout.

Pleasant

Helt bra, blev lite modfälld då ja såg att de va rod stewart igen men gilla de. Kiva att få en annan lead vocalist alltid ibland

Cool guitar

Didn't have anything that stood out.

I'm sure this is/was influential in some way, but today it is pretty bland. Not a whole lot of what I am hearing is making me go "Wow" It's ok though. Pretty inoffensive. The biggest wow factor is the fact that this is an album that came out in the 70s that doesn't really have the pitfalls that a lot of 70s music has. Not great, but not bad 3/5

It's decent, but not great. 3/5

Wasn't sure what to expect here, other than that the title meant it's from the UK. AGAIN. Then I heard Rod Stewart's voice! What a surprise - I had no idea he was in a band before his solo career. Or did I? I know I've had a few albums here with him singing, but I'm not looking back to find out if this band was already in the list. Either way, it was middling/average but his voice is cool. Sounded like that even in his 20s/30s. 3/5.

the music was good the voice was just annoying at times, very scratchy

Better than I expected but nothing I really want to ever listen to on my own. I can't believe I'm giving this a 3 but here we are.

Nice but nothing really special. Need to listen one more time

Kinda clunky, honky-tonk rock. It isn’t the most original music, but it’s quite enjoyable. Every song achieves what it set out to do. Not much to hate here and a lot to love. Good deal of emotion in here too, though maybe a bit repetitive at the end. 3/5

Cat: I like it! Classic late 60s rock sound, bluesy, petite little songs. Rod Stewart’s voice is great - love the grit AJ: 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 Dirty bois. Really fucking cool. Giving it a 3, but Stay With Me is so close to making it a 4 on its own. Ronnie Wood, man. Wow. British dudes singing about Memphis made me laugh. Also, can’t help but wonder what Rod does while the other guy is singing. Real good rock & roll. A fucking jaunt.

Good, some catchy bits and a good happy feeling to it

Stay with me is a rocker, but the rest of the album is just fine to me. I gave it a good crack, but nothing else hit and stuck.

I thought I've never heard Faces before but I actually recognized a few of the songs! This is however 70s rock that I don't understand why it's on the 1001 album list. It's nothing exceptional and nothing groundbreaking compared to other bands from the same era.

Pretty fun.

Took an embarrassingly long time to figure out why this sounded so much like Rod Stewart at times. Of course he sounds better when backed by one of the Rolling Stones.

I like Rod Stewart alright. This had some redeeming moments.

Surprise Rod Stewart appearance! Interesting to learn about this band before they split up.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would based on the weird album name. Stronger side of 3

Decent but dated

It’s kinda like safe bar rock for suburban parents. Just edgy enough to feel bad, but safe enough to listen.

Have to admit it kind of just played in the background and I rocked along. I liked it but I didn't give it much more thought

Solid rock 'n roll album.

Not bad

Classic.

Kinda fun

Decent album. Only 1 song memorable though

I can see why Rod Stewart went single. Still, not a bad album. It had some fun songs.

A bit yee-haw, didn't finish

When Rod Stewart wasn't working on his solo career in the early 70's, he was with Faces. Stewart and guitarist Ron Wood has a good thing going after the Jeff Beck Group, forming their own band and keeping the good times rolling. They're perfectly serviceable songs. Fun, sure. Stay With Me is easily the best, but the instrumental bit in the middle of That's All You Need is also great. The rest is fine.

BritPopRock. This is nothing especially inspiring to hear.

It's a Stones Clone album. It's fine; songs are OK. There are 3 bangers and then a bunch of fillers.

Soild blues rock album, great vocals by Mr Stewart.

Faces, kann nichts schief gehen. Guter straighter Rock.

Best prima. Geen hoogtepunten, geen dieptepunten, gewoon 36 minuten prima muziek.

Rs has a unique voice

This album was fine. Nothing to truly complain about but nothing to hang my hat on either.

Enjoyable album, Stay with me, is a fantastic track and part of my playlist already. 70's bluesy rock is a favorite of mine.

Pretty okay

It's all done well, but nothing stands out. The style has been done to death. The band rose from the ashes of the Small Faces. Apparently the creative genius was someone else from the band. This record is not bad, but it lacks the element of surprise. Favorite song: Stay with me.

Solid old school rock album. Can't really think of anything that stood out though.

Rod Stewart goodness

I don’t know this at all but not bad

It's kinda like the Stones, but with that raspy-voiced mole-faved Muppet of a man Rod Stewart singing. Sheesh.

ITS FINE I GUESS.ID GIVE IT 2.5 STARS IF I COULD.COMPLETELY UNINTERESTING.

Its a nice album, not spectacular, but I do love the rocky psychedelic style. Probably would never listen to it again, but it is a quality album.

70-luvun rockia

Don’t like Rod Stewart, but this was slightly better than anticipated There was definitely a Salt Bae sprinkling of Bob Dylan in there

Not really my bag, but it was easy listenin’ and mentally delivered me to some mid-priced outdoor boomer eatery serving fish n chips and corona happy hour, and I think that’s where I needed to figuratively go tonight.

At first I thought this was gonna be some generic dad rock, and then I was proved right as I listened to it more. Had some nice moments though, would not be upset if they were playing this at a 65th birthday party

Feeling pretty lukewarm about this album. There were good parts and some parts that irritated me which all averaged out to “alright”. 2.7/5

I can't say I came into this album with expectations, but still, I was a little underwhelmed. It's solid post-'60s rock, the difference between vocalists is stark, which is interesting on its own, especially given the immediate recognizability of Rod Stewart's voice. Say what you will (I know he's got some detractors in this listening group), you know when he's singing. Ronnie Lane has a fine voice, though not nearly as distinguishable (I thought George Harrison had taken the mic on one track). "Stay With Me" leapt out of the speakers, probably because it's the song I knew best (i.e., knew at all), but also because it's the best song on the album. The rest of the material didn't quite live up to that standard. As has been said by many of us by now, one listen doesn't quite give enough time with an album to really get a feel for the material, so another listen or two might change how I feel about this one, but I can't be sure if that would improve my appreciation of this record or turn me off to it.

J'ai eu l'impression d'être invitée à un party. J'aime la voix, l'énergie, le rock qui prend le dessus

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Too bad

Good classic rock, nothing spectacular

I had not heard much from Faces, mostly overlooked for Rolling Stones, and Rod Stewart’s solo song (“Maggie Mae”) from the time was played constantly. However, this album was a good bit of fun. Very quick and to the point rock n roll, Rod Stewart at his most enjoyable.

Fun enough but kind of slack and sloppy.

Pretty wild that this is my second album with Rod Stewart as the vocalist in a week, and neither one of them were his solo albums (the other was a Jeff Beck album). This album was fun to listen to, but didn't feel like it had a huge amount of substance to it. It has what I would consider to be a pretty generic 1970s sound. However, it was made in 1971, so it could be that this album was highly influential in forming the 70s rock sound and other artists were aping Faces. Having Ronnie Wood playing guitar on the album may be contributing to that feeling, since he has a pretty iconic style. Everything about the album is pretty good, none of it is great, but it was still worth a listen 3/5

Some real bangers for sure. But for a short album it didn't feel consistently good. Faces are a blind spot for me, Rod Stewart was the height of naff when I was growing up.

Very listenable, but also very forgettable. Really isn't bad, quite the opposite, but it just doesn't stick.

I mean it's perfectly good but why am I listening to it? Just because the members of the band are talented and interesting characters who have been influential on music writ large doesn't make this album any of those things.

This is an album that sounds like a group of guys having fun. Didn't blow me away but there wasn't a single second of it that I didn't enjoy. Just a great collection of bluesy rock songs made by a bunch of legends who were/would go on to define British music of the era.

Very heavy blues influence, not bad. Nice voice; raspy. Slide guitar cool.

Surprisingly harmless despite my dislike of Rod in general.

Decent 70s british rock sound, doesnt really blow off my feet however. Fav song: Memphis least fav song: Too bad

Dobar naziv albuma, I give you that. Dobar album u cijelosti, međutim nije mi došlo dalje od 3.5. Debris mi se jako svidjela na prvo slušanje.

I remember little of this

Seemed okay, bonus start for album title

It's fun to hear Rod Stewart front a heavier band than I'm used to hearing. Reminds me of Aerosmith a little. Still, very middle of the road for me. Favorite tracks: "Memphis", "Miss Judy's Farm"

I somehow did not know this band did Stay with Me and not just Rod Stewart. Recognized vocals immediately on starting the album.

Well it's Rod Stewart innit?! One of the greatest voices and personas in Rock. I love early Rod (Maggie and Mandolin) but never listened to the Faces at all really but this is a good groove. I'm liking Ronnie Wood (who tries to sound like Dylan). It's good listening to be sure. Not superdooper but good.

I'm surprised that I liked this album as much as I did. Usually Rod Stewart's voice is so closely tied to some of his solo work that I have heard too many times, that it's hard for me to enjoy his other music. (See the Jeff Beck recommendation early on in this list). I had only heard one track ("Stay with Me") from this album before. I liked the mix of guitar and keyboards from the first track on this album. "Debris" was the individual track that I rated the highest. The last track of the album was the only one that I might skip. The album is easily a 3, but doesn't quit have enough to round up to a full 4 stars. ,

This is a patchy album and is testament to the Faces' reputation as being better live than in the studio. Beyond the standout track - Stay with me - and to a lesser extent Debris and Miss Judy's Farm, a lot of the other tracks are in substantial and unmemorable. It's a mystery why Rod Stewart wasn't lead singer on all the tracks. The cover version of Memphis added nothing to the original. A good but not a great album

Some decent Rock and Country on this album, but nothing that sounded particularly interesting to me. I might revisit this some time, but I wouldn't count on it. Favourite: Too Bad

In spite of this being one of my favorite genres and the record is very well executed it just lacks a bit of some extra spice that will push it over the edge of "quite good" and make it stood out. I might be in a minority here but I vastly preferred songs where Lane had the lead vocals.

just average

Yep! That's surely one of the rock albums of the 70s. First Listen?: Y Fav. Tracks: Memphis Rating: 2.5/5

70s sort of Rock. Sound.

This was a straightforward blues rock album. Nothing about it was groundbreaking or pushed the genre forward in anyway. This album was released in 1971 meaning that in fact, it was treading ground that had previously be broken by earlier blues and hard rock album such as the first three Led Zeppelin albums and plenty of Rolling Stones albums.

ni tan mal la primera pero va demasiado lento

Mielelläänhän tätä kuuntelee

Nice solid 3 star. Music wasn't bad, but man nothing really gripped me. Nothing got stuck in my head, just sounded alright then instantly forgot about it. Never knew Rod Stewart had a band lol

better than the solo album of Rod Stewie, 6.5/10

Good album. Stay With Me good as is Love Lives Here. Very "driving down route 66 in a big car" kinda thing. Or truck driving...

Was cool

not too bad but not really my thing

Very good, Rod Stewart vibes

Sounds a lot like Rolling Stones.. maybe likeable.

The music is good if you're a fan of rock from the 70s. Although I can appreciate the quality of the music, I can't help but relegate it to being generic background "dad rock." A fine listen, but I won't go out of my way.

Good bluesy rock. "Stay With Me" is a classic track off this album.

A pretty fun rock and roll album if somewhat unremarkable. No doubt there are some very good songs and performances and it makes for an enjoyable listen from start to finish. 3.5 🌟

The album was alright. Stay With Me was recognizable. Some of the songs were for the most part pretty short as the album was only 35 minutes. Apparently Rod Stewart is a member of Faces. I still dont think I would listen to this album again but it wasn't a bad album.

Pretty standard, middle of the road classic rock I grew up hearing at family BBQs. Nothing special but not terrible.

I know it seems like no album gets below a 3, but that is my honest to goodness reaction. I don't think that I have ever heard of this band before. I may have heard songs by them and not realized it, but for all intents of purpose this was all new to me. I enjoyed the album, definitely had the sound of the time and that is alright. I will consider giving some of their other albums a try!

We'll, first things first - Stay With Me is an undeniable classic. A rare instance of Rod Stewart improving a song with his presence. The album is otherwise a good Ricky album... But when compared to Marriot era Small Faces it feels insubstantive and thin. A bit too simple. Still some good songs on here, and there's no way you could call this bad. But it definitely feels like a demo for all of them to move on to their next job. Except Stay With Me. That's solid gold.

Standout Tracks: Miss Judy's Farm, You're So Rude, Debris

Another band that I have never heard of before today. Good classic music, easy to listen to and enjoy. I'd listen to their other albums. This one was merely ok, I may listen to it again but I'm happy to have heard it at least once.

Pretty good album, enjoyed the listen and would listen again. Early70's rock with good riffs and vocals

Prolly one of the best that this page makes me hear

Some good relatable songs here about being a Top Shagger

fav track: Memphis, Tennessee

Cool, but not standout.

Pretty good stuff, but I can see why Rod branched off on his own. This band was holding him back.

I liked the heck out of this. Stay With Me is the high point, but I listened to this twice through and didn't get tired of it. Even the stuff that hangs in the background still has enough meat on it to keep it interesting. Simultaneously sounds old-fashioned and cooler than a lot of newer music. Funny thinking Rod Stewart was once not middle-aged.

Imagine being the co-vocalist in a band with Rod Stewart. While Ronnie Lane is a great bass player, often underrated and overlooked among the other classic rock players, he’s not that great of a singer. Ringo Starr was generally allowed one song on each Beatles LP, and while he’s not that great of a singer either (especially in relation to the other lads in the band) at least he’s in on the joke, and certainly not taking himself very seriously. Everyone knows that Ringo knows that he cannot sing like Paul McCartney. More importantly, the ‘Ringo’ song never interrupts the movement of the whole LP. ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ still sounds like the Beatles and Sgt Pepper’s. I wish I could say the same about Ronnie Lane’s singing on 'A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse'- ‘You’re So Rude’ or the boogie-woogie ‘Last Order Please’ or even his best of his three, ‘Debris,’ set to the accompaniment of Allman Brothers sounding acoustic guitars. They’re not bad songs, just songs badly sung. Lane’s lead vocals are only average, and that’s being generous. The joy of a Ringo vocal is utterly absent from Lane’s repertoire. And allotting more than one song- a third of the album- does interrupt the movement of the whole. One listen to a Ronnie Lane lead vocal followed by a Rod Stewart will tell you all you need to know. Lane clearly needs to stick to bass duty, and singing back up only. Rod Stewart’s voice is just too unique, too good, the perfect rough and ready but at the same time melodic style befitting a swaggering early 70s British rock n’ roll/soul band. And the Faces do know how to put the roll in the rock on the Stewart numbers: the loose, ‘Miss Judy’s Farm’ or the Stones-like ‘Too Bad’ (actually, badly in need of a Mick Taylor lead guitar solo) or especially the rollicking ‘Stay With Me,’ this LP’s big hit. This is quintessential Faces. But, alas, this rock n’ roll train stopped in too many stations, even derailing on Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis.’ I’m not generally a fan of a guitar played through a Leslie effect, not finding the sound particularly pleasant, no matter how well it’s played. This is not a knock on Ron Wood, who is more than competent on his guitar. He’s in his comfort zone all over this LP, opting for mostly rhythm, interspersed with lots of nice chops and hooks, rather than scorching, flashy leads, very similar to the technique of his good mate, Keith Richards. Oi, it’s good ol’ fashioned, down and dirty, early 70s pub and cock rock. Hoist a few pints along with this listen, maybe attend to the bathroom or have a smoke outside during the Lane numbers, and don’t take it too seriously. Save your intense listening for the next Stone’s album that followed, 'Exile On Main Street.'

I liked it

Enjoyed Rod Stewart’s songs

3/5 nice but not enough

Sounds like a more rock-and-roll Rod Stewart, go figure

I think learning about the band was more interesting than the album itself. Love Lives Here, Stay with Me, and Memphis were the standouts.

stay with me is solid, rest is fine

Perfectly bland middle of the road. 2.5/5

Entertaining bluesy rock album, not shaking trees but a bunch of decent musicians finessing their craft.

Its a decent album, an example of rod stewards style of rock songs stay with me is a great song and the others are decent

A Nod's As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse was the first time I'd heard of Faces, then to find out that in it was Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood was a nice surprise. A very succinct album that hit all the right notes for a country/blues rock album. Best: Stay With Me Worst: Last Orders

I liked this album. Stay with me is a classic and knew of the faces prior to this. The whole album is pretty good. It’s relatively short but brings plenty of energy. It’s fun and the instrumentals seem good. Rod Stewart is a classic musician. 7.2/10

Fine Rod Stewart

I like dad rock. This was textbook definition of "dad rock" and if you expected anything more you're not going to get it. 3.5/5

First exposure to the band with this album, the lead vocalist was strangely familiar. After a little research, it is somewhat surprising to learn of Rod Stewart, seeing that his solo career sort of puts a damper on the impact of Faces as a band, asking people to instead see how its individual members fared. The album is a solid 70s rock album. Rod Stewart as a rock vocalist, as long as one can ignore that it is Rod Stewart, can still insist that this album is a well-done, and consistently good production. While none of the songs stand out in particular, this actually may be a good thing. Start to finish, the album is what it is, and that is a solid 70s rock album. An honorable mention is the end track "That's All You Need" --- because that is what this album seems to give.

Pub rock, rockin' the pub.

Pretty good rock

Moving on from the mixed response to their early work and still under the shadow of their bandmates' earlier incarnation as the Small Faces, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood penned this nine track album together. It seems to have been carried by the momentum of its hit single, "Stay With Me": most of the rest is solid, if unremarkable, 70s rock. The line-up and musicianship here is fairly rudimentary with a few chances for each member to shine: there's a heavy blues inflection to most of the songs (including some harmonica), no shortage of distinctive guitar licks from Rolling Stone-to-be Wood, and welcome interjections from Ian McLagan's distorted electric piano and organ. Drummer Kenney Jones is reasonably restrained, playing in locked beats but often letting loose towards the end of some songs. When he leads the band in letting rip slightly more (the accelerandos towards the end of "Miss Judy's Farm" and "Memphis") it's a good time, but not transcendent. "Stay With Me" is of course the high watermark here: the band's biggest hit and no doubt the reason this album is on the list. It boasts a riff dripping with bravado, a concise chord progression, and Stewart's trademark rasp in full singalong mode. The rest of the strongest moments are in the album's second half: "Too Bad" is the biggest rocker on the record, with a big Stones vibe in the trebly rhythm guitar. The closer "That's All You Need" is the closest the band get to matching Zeppelin, with its Delta-blues style slide riff. It then kicks off into a rollicking rock number, shooting for "You Can't Always Get What You Want" style epiphany with a bit of an underwhelming steel-drum coda. While it's perfectly enjoyable and often great rock music, the main problem I've had with this album is that with every passing track, it becomes impossible not to compare Faces with their litany of contemporaries who have stood the test of time and attained "legend" status. The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, T. Rex, Deep Purple… the list goes on. Comparison is often an unfair beast, but it's hard to avoid when the curators of this list insist on piling in so many early 70s rock bands (many of whom also worked with producer Glyn Johns and produced much better results). Up against the towering work of their peers, Faces come across as ready-salted, meat and potatoes, vanilla rock. "Love Lives Here" is a run-of-the-mill ballad, "Last Orders Please" is a hokey blues shuffle and "You're So Rude" is so plodding it almost runs itself into the ground. It also has to be said that the songs with Ronnie Lane on lead vocals suffer for a lack of Rod Stewart (and I never thought I'd write that). It's good unabashed rock, sure, but I'm not going to die grateful to have heard it.

I've always found Rod Stewart to be particularly difficult to like, but it works on this early, glam, stomper of an album. It nips along and doesn't outstay its welcome, but feels a bit meat-and-potatoes. It's kind of a steady plod from start to finish.

Rod Stewart's voice is perfect for this type of music. It was a good listen!

First half was really good, fell off dramatically after that.

Enjoyed it way more than I thought I Wood.

Rod Stewart!

The classic "Stay with Me" is the iconic song from the album. The rest isn't bad either. I prefer the songs that feature Rod Stewart on lead vocals. A strong classic rock album. Standouts: Stay with Me, Love Lives Here Others: Miss Judy's Farm, You're So Rude 3/5

Good band. I did'nt know it. His songs are nice. Well, in this album, there is a cover "Memphis" of Chuck Berry.

Was never a fan of Rod Stewart’s voice

everyones favourite singing nan. he's looked like a bingo regular for the past 40 years. The small faces were a tremendous band so its a bit of a shame they turned into the rod stewart backing band. I'm not really that arsed about Rods singing voice so its nice to hear some flashes of the old small faces every now and then.

Gostei, mas não é tanto o meu gênero.

Did not know Rod Stewart was once part of a band. Good sound.

Don't know what I expected with this, all I can say is, nice I guess

3, very listenable. I hadn't heard of them by band name but then of course recognized a couple of the songs.

A lot of the tracks are well-paced, good originals, but wears out a tad before it's conclusion. The 5-minute Chuck Berry cover in the middle seems to come out of nowhere.

It's a nice album and can appreciate it. 7/10.

A classic rock band sounded like Rod Stewart

Thanks Rod!

Stay With Me slaps. The rest is listenable but generic. Generous 3.

Enjoyed it a lot

Yeah. It's OK.

I wasn't too familiar with Faces, but knew Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood had some sort of connection, so this makes sense now. The album was alright, bit dated and lacked consistency (of the band's "identity"), it was either "this is a Rod Stewart song" or not. Stay With Me is a good old sing-along.

A proper boogie-woogie album. A bit of a classic but I'd happily listen to it again.

my one and only fun fact relating to this album: one day back in the early 00's, out of nowhere rod stewart followed me on twitter. i have no idea why, but when i checked a good while later, he was still following. apart from that, the only experience i have with rod stewart is distinctly not liking his music. so this has been fun. on the other hand, i have a thing for covers - and i have always loved the song memphis, which i knew via johnny rivers (see: https://open.spotify.com/track/5QqdnAVnNCfWp9CZ3pi5a0). the original is, of course, also fantastic: https://open.spotify.com/track/3UYtylPa55RqHS1YDGZoLs and...ok, fine, the guitar tone on that's all you need is pretty damn nice. i am a sucker that growly slide thing, and homey rips it up on that track but i still don't like rod stewart, dammit.

faces... LEGENDARY

Far too much Rod on this list. Celtic bastard

Fine for what it is but could not get past two songs. Just not my cup of tea. Very 70's style white people rock.

Pretty fun bluesy rock album. Unfortunately I immediately compared it to Led Zeppelin in my brain and it just doesn’t hold up to that comparison. 3/5

decentttt some good ones some boring

Average

Rock clásico, cercano al blues, muy buen sonido. Tuvo que ser genial verlos en directo en su época. Me han gustado: "Stay with Me" y "That's all you need".

Cultura general. No sabía que Rod Stewart estuvo en este grupo

3.8 - Solid classic rock record with heavy guitar licks. Rod Stewart sounds convincing on lead - this was probably before he started making questionable career choices.

3rd September 2021 Listened on my phone, had my first class at Nuffield and went to see Tim key in the evening with woody. Sounds like Ross Stewart is having a blast.

Slower easy to listen to rock. Very 70s

A good album. Didn't blow me away but grew on me a lot after a few listens. Liked how short it was too - made this an easy thing to come back to Saved: Stay With Me, That's All You Need*

'Stay With Me' had me moving, but other than that, the album felt rather bland. Good for some background listening.

mmmmm this is ok. A bit too 70's for me I think

My first real listen of this band. Solid classic rock sound expected from this era. Nothing really stood out. Favorite song: That’s all you need.

Never heard of them before, pretty decent background music.

The boys doing what they do best

Rod Stewart's band? 1. I love how this starts. Great chugging distorted guitar and bass---sick tone. Honestly went a little bit downhill when Rod's voice came in though. 2. Feel-good song. Sounds familiar (but I don't think I've heard it before) 3. Ballad. I actually like Rod's voice here. Some nice organ, a fun riff. Chord changes are meh. 4. Honky tonk. 5. Famous song: Stay With Me. Fits here. It is a highlight. 6. Another ballad. Sounds like Wild Horses. 7. More honky tonk, but better. 8. Upbeat. Familiar sound. Pretty ok. But the piano jam at the end is kind of fun. 9. Nice guitar tone---sounds like ACDC at the beginning. Once it gets going though, it sort of sounds like they're confused about the song's key? Nice guitar solo in the middle, sounds like Jimmy Page. Woah---steel drums??? This is actually probably my favorite song on the album because it's so weird... Not really sure if it's actually good haha. Score: 3. good, solid effort.

Funky blues riffs. British sensibilities. And Rod Stewart? I do recognize one song - Stay With Me. This album is... okay. I'm not a fan of Stewart's vocals

I recognised 'Stay with me' but I found the voice a bit whiney over all. Country rock kind of vibes.

Stay with me is a good song, not sure about the others

6/7 out of 10. feels very of /that/ era. i liked the first half, but the second half started dragging a bit for me. a good album for car rides. OKAY nvm i have one song left and a 6/7 out of 10 rating is too generous. i'll give it a 4/10.

Cool rock record. Last track had a rad chunky groove.

Not really my type but a fun album. I loved the lead singer's (Rod Steward) voice.

This album reminded me how different recoding styles have changed over the years. How looping and re-recording vocals wasn’t a thing because you basically had one take. And a lot of the time, the instruments were in the booth with you when they were being recorded

Some real nice numbers that stick in your head.

This is a solid blues rock album. Not a huge fan of Rod Stewart, but the instrumentation and mix is pretty solid. I can totally understand how someone might love this album. 3 stars.

Ich finde es als Ganze betrachtet sehr stimmig, sehr passend in sich, schon fast zu sehr - es fehlt so das herausragende etwas.

A cracking wee album, focused and tight. The guitars sounds fantastic, Rods voice is, we’ll Rods voice and some really good songs on here. Not sure there are any really ‘great’ tracks and couple of duds on here too so it s 3 for me

Cut and paste 70's sound with some amazing riffs. Plus Rod Stewart supports Celtic🇬🇧 Maybe being overly negative due to genre fatigue.

Really enjoyed this - will explore more but can’t stretch to a four

So far four songs in. It’s... ok. Definitely not bad. But not mind blowing yet. Surprised how rod stewart only sounds like what I think of rod Stewart occasionally. Ok “stay with me” is pretty solid. I think I’ve heard it before. But yea cool song. “Debris” is pretty cool. Maybe the second half of the album picks up. The vibe I’m getting from a lot of this album: if I was still going through my classic rock phase or if I was around when this first came out, it would be a very top notch album. But I think I’m just kinda “over” classic rock a little. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great genre, but it now takes a lot to blow me away within the genre. Pretty dope slide guitar on the last track though.

Alternative and different.

Rod Stewart lead vocals. I thought Stay With Me was a solo hit. Good rock and blues feel.

Enjoyed listening to it while I was, but wouldn’t rush back to listen again.

Always a fun listen. Nothing ground breaking, but I always enjoy this one. An easy “toss on in the background” album

I liked it for sure, but i don't know if it's one of the best albums of all time. It wasn't as memorable as others to me.

Dece. Never heard of these guys before, nice folky rock music. 3***

It was alright for what it was, kind of fun rocky thing.

Loved rod stewarts vocals

Bluesy feel. Easy to see why Ronnie Wood ended up with the Roling Stones. Nice that Rod Stewart didn't sing in three songs.

Nothing special, but a good album to know something of this important band

Too bluesy for my taste

Another album that I would never be exposed to were it not for this website. I think the songs that Rod sings on are vastly superior to the ones featuring Ronnie Lane. Stay with me is most definitely the killer track here with a raucous bluesy guitars and piano.

This made perfectly palatable background listening for me as I sorted out my financial affairs today!

Good fun.

Had no idea about Rod Stewart pre-solo career. An enjoyable listen, but didn't come away feeling that this was an all-time great record or anything.

Eh, not massively my thing, but it grew on me as it went on. Fave track - "Memphis, Tennessee" - this song sounds like the template Elvis Costello mutated into the manic kaleidoscopic "Tokyo Storm Warning", which has long been a personal fave...

A little samey at times but some fun riffs and nice vocal performances by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane. 6/10

Good bluesy 70s rock

Pretty cool

The latter half of this album is more enjoyable to me than the beginning. The whole thing is decent, though

Classic Rod Stewart(before listening i wasn't aware Rod Stewart had a band before his solo stuff). His vocals and lyrical storytelling are very present.

It's okay, musically it's pretty good. Pretty solid 70s rock and roll, but it doesn't do a ton for me personally.

Flitted between 2 and 3 in my brain for most of the album. I suppose it would be 2.5 if there was such a thing. In the end Stay With Me, Debris and Thats All You Need made me go for 3. I do wish Ronnie Lane sang more than Rod though.

Nice album. Was nice to listen to. I am a fan of Rod Steward. You could recognize his voice.

Alternative and different

Rod Stewart was in a band before he went solo!

Übberaschend guter Rock nice Guitars

Rob Stewart’s solo stuff is better.

Hat mir gefallen! Rockig! Konnte man gut zuhören. Hat mich aber auch nicht umgehauen. Möchte ich nicht nochmal hören. Moving on!

Good stuff, never heard of them before liked it a lot.

Lepposaa menoa ja muutama koukuttava biisi

Klassisk rock n’ roll, simpelt, charmerende

Tää oli hyvä! Toimivaa seiskytlukua, viihdyin koko levyn ajan ja voisin kuvitella, et Steven on ottanut tästä vahvoja lauluvaikutteita.

Did not know Rod Steward did decent blues

Good fun

Stay With Me och Memphis är bra grejer!

Have a complete normal one and listen to this.

211. ok

This was okay!
