Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Can't say I'm now a fan of the band, but it was a great ride of fun. Careless and feelgood listening.

Megakjedelig eller? Ikke vondt å høre på, men høres ut som 70% av de andre albumene på denne lista. Nesten 2, men klarer ikke å forsvare denne på samme nivå som Kraftwerk fra gårsdagen.

I get blues fatigue pretty easily but I actually enjoyed this. Worth revisiting

Too Nashville for me, but there are some surprising parts that kept me in it. Not bad, not great.

(63/100)

good sound. nice short songs

I enjoyed it, but I was definitely ready for it be over by the end.

I said elsewhere that Rod Stewart was on the verge of making good music - well, here it is. It's fine, if a little bit also-ran late 60s early 70s bluesrock stuff. It's at its best when it's going hard, leaning to the edges of out of control, and at it's worse when it's slow and the other guy is singing. Not as good as other stuff of the same type, but you could do worse than this, I guess.

3 stars

Rod summons his inner Howler Monkey~ What a difference auto tune makes...

Its exactly as good as any other 70s classic album. This has the benefit of being relatively lesser known, so the songs haven't been played to hell. 3.5 if I could

Classic rock is classic rock is classic rock is

Puede que este sea el álbum más conocido de Faces, sobre todo tras la entrada de Rod Stewart. A mí me gusta mucho más su siguiente álbum, Ooh La La, pero aún así sigue siendo un disco de blues rock súper disfrutable. 3'5/5

I hope he doesn't mind me winking asleep. Interesting voice paired with decent instrumentals. This truly feels like a perfectly average album, but that's all you need...

Very groovy Would make good background music in a bar or on the radio, not drawn to listen to it actively though as nice as it is to listen to Love the instrumentals Dare I say sappy? Not that that's a bad thing

I have mixed feelings about Rod Stewart; I liked his younger more rocking’ version, but he lost me when he became more of a balladeer. This album I like, particularly the songs where Stewart handles the vocals. I have always really liked Stay with Me, and even bought the 45 single when I was a kid. I think if Stewart handled the vocals on all of the songs, I would have given it four stars. As is, I will give it three.

3+. Thats a good rock, rod stewart again as a main vocal. But not enough to be good, just after that album in the autoplay the fleetwood mac song had been played, which gave me a vibe of a really good song

Favourites: Miss Judy's Farm, Stay With Me, Debris, That's All You Need

***An ok album, some hard guitar playing.

Not the worst album on here, but also not the best. Something about Rod Stewart’s voice irritates me though

I used to like these guys back in highschool, but now not so much, but they dont suck

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Fun album. Never had listed to a Faces record before. Can’t believe they let the bassist sing songs when they had Rod Stewart in the band. It’s a fun party Rockin kind of album.

Kind of reminds me of a good time at a pub.

Rod Stuart’s unmistakable raspy voice is at the forefront of this ensemble. I thought that maybe I put on the wrong album and somehow got a Rod album as I am not knowledgable in my Big Rod lore. Not really my thing but it’s very clean and everyone is doing their part very well. 6/10

"A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse by Faces" sounds like it would be the work of a completely unhinged anarcho punk / minimalist indie electro pop/ avant-garde free jazz band. Turns out it's just ok dad-rock.

This album is a blast of boozy, blues-rock energy, and while it’s undeniably fun, it doesn’t always rise above its own swagger. Tracks like *"Stay with Me"* and *"Miss Judy's Farm"* are standouts—full of raw charm and Ronnie Wood’s killer guitar work—but at times, the relentless bluesy groove starts to feel repetitive. Rod Stewart’s raspy charisma carries the album, though some songs blur together in a haze of barroom riffs.

I mean, it's fine I guess..

Not too bad! I had quite a nice time with this, and it was consistently good throughout with no real dips in quality. Not overlong also, which is appreciated. It's quite a jam in general. Kind of upbeat rock n roll with some nice keys and jammy guitars. There's a few softer bits in there too which worked. It kind of flew by, and was a nice background listen. 3.5 rounded down.

Angenehm zu hörendes Rock-Album aus den frühen 70ern. Die Stimme von Rod Steward passt gut zu dem kratzenden Gitarren-Sound. 3/5

oh well it seems like when i rate my 300th album and the "congrats! 300 albums!" didnt show up, i forgot this. and this is ok i think. just like all the blues rock band before. 3/5! written on 2025/9/16

Alright I don’t really love this genre of boomer music, but I did think it was slightly above average. I thought the guitar work was pretty clean and had some cool tones. I’m thinking like a low to average 3.

I don’t remember but I’m sure it’s good

Can't say I was familiar with this band before this project. This is a nice record and very easy to listen to. It has a good rhythm and vibe to it all around and Rod Stewart is a pleasure to listen to. Good mood on this one.

Surprised this was 1970, didn't mind it

Fine proggy stuffs

Decent

Yeah… this album is fine

Knew I recognised that voice! A lot less polished/pop version of him and more enjoyable as a result. Basically cool Rod Stewart with same catchy songs but with a bit more swag and less polished. I can dig it.

I like this version of Rod Stewart

I’ve never heard of this and but to mean they are a generic sound of the era.

I had no idea they had duelling vocalists, though thst might have been more of a thing for this album. Interesting that Rod’s vocals are the worst of the two, sounding shot to bits even 50 years ago. Overall, i thought this was decent but I’ll never listen again.

Hit or miss for me.

Pretty good.

Solid classic rock. Down the middle. Favorite thing about Faces is the guitar, especially on Stay With Me. Little burnt out in Rod Stewart’s voice. Overall take is this is a very average 70’s rock album, which big picture is pretty good.

It’s ok nothing earth shattering. The ones where Rod sings are the best by far.

It was mostly fine. Just felt like... Pretty good rock n roll? Felt that the leader sibger was somehow trying too hard.

Decent rock music. I had no real complaints, but again, there was just too much of this kind of music at this time. It can’t all be essential. I have no feelings about Rod Stewart like some do.

Reminds me of the Rolling Stones

This is a pretty good, important album featuring a young Rod Stewart. Noisy British garage rock (in a good way). It’s a 3.

It's ok. Interesting to hear the young Rod Stewart hear (even at that time he had this "old" sound). But I was not particularly fond of the music.

its ok but kinda generic. nothing special. can't even pick a fav track.

Het is goeie achtergrond muziek, maar niet veel meer

This feels like an album I would have a really good time listening to after 8 or 9 pints in bar or walking home drunk from said bar or being a passenger in car driven by an equally drunk driver. I have never heard of Faces, I had no idea prior to this that this was a part of Rod Stewarts's oeuvre - I have never been either partial or opposed to him, just not very invested. Reading that Ron Wood was a part tracks since it does feel like Rolling Stones lifting Chuck Berry with some British working class additions. Stay With Me is the only song I knew going into this - it's good fun, actually listening to the lyrics also made me think "Hmmm, maybe this is slightly problematic." The album keeps a certain pace and feel, but is also - with the notable exception of Debris - if not slightly one note requiring of me to be in a certain mood (see non-legally incriminating introductory note above).

Very good I don't think I ever listened to this before

So of it's time it makes you wanna put on some tartan and bell bottoms and go smoke in a pub because you've got a shit job and nothing better to do but listen to a band who think they're either Bob Dylan or a blues band. Sounds derivative now and only worth a listen if the Bay City Rollers are on your playlist.

# 495 : A Nod Is As Good As A Wink : 04/06/2025 They've done a pretty decent job, it’s a good album, it’s enjoyable and fun overall. Some good hits and bangers, but drags out a bit. It's ok, but not 5 star material. Favourite Track : Stay With Me

It’s an inoffensive early 70’s rock album. It’s good background music. That’s the best I can say about it.

Not a bad listen. Young Rod Stewart sounds about as energetic as you'd expect, with him, and sometimes Ronnie Lane, bringing their unique voices to the bluesy rock backdrop. Stewart's solo career was also sort of taking off at this point, but the Faces still had some music to put out before they were all done. "Stay with Me" is probably the best it gets here, which ended up being the big hit from this album. A fine rock record, but not overwhelmingly memorable.

Despite including Rod Stewart, I enjoyed this music.

Fun record. It didn’t blew my mind. Really liked the jam vibe they had. Felt like listening to a band playing in a bar. Again, Fun!

Rock from 71 with Rod Steward.

Another woodstock-style album with plenty of great psychedelic solos and parts, average vocal and quite unimpressive songwriting. It's a record that you listen to because you want to be seen as quirky, not because it's good, probably. Woodstock produced better bands.

I didn't know Rod Stewart was in a band before. A pretty good one, in fact. I think "ANiaGaaWtaBH" is slightly better than Paul Simon's "Graceland". It's still poor compared to last week's albums. This album's title is longer than the length of said album itself. 3 stars for "ANiaGaaWtaBH".

I like the music, I like his voice. But unfortunately there is not a single remarkable song on this album. Weak three stars for the Faces. 2,5

Big fan of Rod Stewart. New some of the Faces big singles but hadn't listened to an album all the way through. Enjoyed this one quite a bit when Rod was singing. Lot of energy, fun guitars with a killer tone to them. The songs where Rod wasn't singing felt a little flatter to me making the whole thing good but inconsistent. That's All You Need was especially great and reminded me of Led Zeppelin. This was very close to a 4 for me.

Entirely unremarkable imo

Pretty good but nothing special, typical rock songs and rhythms

Thought this was surprisingly great. Rod’s scratchy voice really works well with this kind of bluesy rock. Wasn’t as fussed with the songs sung by the bass player (although he has some great bass lines on this thing), but overall yeah this was pretty good!

The songs where Rod Stewart has lead vocals are significantly more interesting to me. Mostly standard blues rock fare otherwise. Favorites were Miss Judy’s Farm, Stay With Me, and Too Bad.

First song: "Is that Rod Stewart?" Fifth song ("Stay With Me"): "That's definitely Rod Stewart." I'm an idiot. Crazy that Ronnie Wood was in the group as well.

Had no idea Rod Stewart was in this band, thank you 1001 album generator for the music history lesson

Menevää rokkia muttei nyt kyl suurempia tunteita herättänyt! 3/5

Aika kova pitää rock-levyn olla että tässä vaiheessa listaa pääsisi neloseen. Tämä ei sitä ollut.

ist ok

This was when Rod was a genuine rock star before he morphed into the crooner he became. Faces on top of their game. Known for their excessive indulgences and having good times. I bought this album along with the now banned and by modern day standards, inappropriate poster. Not an album I now listen to a lot but was the soundtrack to some of my best memories. 3/5 10/5/25

Decent album. My favourite was Debris.

Better than a kick in the ass with a frozen boot

Profoundly unremarkable but inoffensive bluesy pub rock. Way too many albums like this on this list, frankly

Kept waiting for something to grab me but nothing ever did.

Every time I hear a good blues rock album on the list my hatred for the black keys grows stronger. By the time their album gets generated for me I should be able to turn Patrick carney into a toad with just my mind!

Never heard of them, so Rod Stewart on vocals was a surprise. Good album.

Had never heard of this band so came in completely cold. At first found I found it a bit bland and my mind was wandering. But Stay With Me grabbed me and the album really built from there. Debris and the Chuck Berry cover were great. So went back for a re-listen and it gets the thumbs up. Would enjoy having this on vinyl. Was fun learning after the lead is Rod Stewart. Cant decide whether I like his voice or not. Dad - Right up your alley Dust - Worth a go

Uncsi basic régi rock

Solid 3 star album.

Dit staat als rock in de lijst, maar is dit niet gewoon een blues album? Het klinkt in elk geval wel echt zo, beter dan veel blues dat moet ik toegeven. Het valt me echt alles mee zelfs! FAVO: Stay with me, Memphis

Good standard British rock from the early 70s. It is not something very exciting but a pleasant enough listen. I prefer the Small Faces to Faces, though.

This is alright. It's some real bluesy 70's rock. If you're into that, and you've been wondering what Rod Stewart was up to before all his solo stuff, you may like this.

Love the guitar, and the rest is okay.

I love Rod Stewart like I love Bruce Springsteen. I guess I love the idea of loving them more than I love them. And I love/want to love them so much!

I seem to have been stuck on this album for ages. It's good! Lots of good songs! I didn't know Rod could make this kind of stuff and make it well. But I also think there's a reason it's taken me several weeks to come up with an actual rating, which is that I don't really like this that much. There's something a bit vapid about it all. Where is this going? What is it for? Who is it for? Why should I listen to this? Is it pastiche? Are they taking themselves seriously? I just don't know and I've run out of time to work it all out. So it's a disappointing 3 stars for this one. Some fine stuff but not songs I'm ever going to dig out again.

A bit slow for me

The most entertaining aspect of this serviceable, if not a bit middle-of-the-road, blues rock record is its cheeky title.

I'm still little upset that they platformed Rod Stewart. But I'm rounding up to 3 stars because the music is listenable enough, although I will never listen to this album again. UPDATE: I joined a group and was given this album again. To keep my word, I didn't listen again, and cut and pasted my earlier review.

Blind Horse would have been a cooler name for the band. Aside from that, what's not to like about this?

6/10. I simply cannot get over just how bloody specific it is to compare nodding to winking to a blind horse. What are some other similar comparisons that one could make? A Forced Apology Is as Good as a Cheer...to a Deaf Lemming. A Beef Cupcake Is as Good as a Spiced Cake...to a Cow Recovering From COVID-19. A Fart Is as Good as a Perfume...to a Pig Who Got Their Nose Cut Off. A Concert Ticket to See an Elvis Costello Tribute Band Is as Good as a Belly Rub...to a Dead Fish. A Shirt With Attached Mittens Is as Good as a Hairbrush...to a Bald Cat. A Used Stick of Deodorant Is as Good as a Prostate Exam...to a Female. My Second-Cousin-Once-Removed Gertrude Telling Me That She Will Stop Only Eating the Bread From My Salami Sandwiches While Removing the Fillings Is as Good as a Pair of Shoes...to a Snake. A Listen to the Album "A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse" by the Faces Is as Good as a Pair of Chopsticks...to a Pet Rock.

it’s cool i guess

Your dad's third or fourth favorite classic rock album in his collection

Rod Bloody Stewart....

Pretty nice

Pretty good

70s pub-rock

I like the overall sound but the vocals are terrible to my ears

2.6 Certainly more tolerable than Rod's solo stuff, but that still doesn't mean it creeps into good territory. Not my cup of tea, bot offensive.

The better tracks were the ones where Rod Stewart sang lead. But the best parts were when nobody sang at all.

Pretty good. 3.5*

род стюарт малясь чпокнул

3.5 surprisingly

This is a high 3. This album is swanky

not the biggest revolution but it's consistently enjoyable

The thing is that all of Rod Stewart’s stuff is just really okay, but none of it is great.

Pretty solid jams

Definitely heard Rod on this album, which was like listening to music that wasn't as good as his solo act, but not terrible either.

Some decent old rock. Nothing that stood out to me. Nothing I would seek out in the future. Also, nothing I would mind having on in the background.

Great album. Standout songs Last orders please Stay with me That's all you need

I have never been and will never be a Rod Stewart fan. His voice, however limited, is an interesting pairing with a rock and roll band. To no surprise, the rock songs here are pretty good, the ballads are terrible. And one question, you recruit a great rock voice and he only songs on 66% of the tracks? Boo.

Solid but fairly unremarkable blues rock.

Aika hyvä poljento koko ajan! Rokki soi ja äänessä on raspia, voin kuvitella kannenmukaisten keikkojen tunnelman.

decent listen

Mestadels av gammal musik går att återuppliva, tror dock inte det här gäller för rod stewart, han är bra men han avger känslan av gammal gubbe

My enthousiasm is of the mild variety

Decent

Very blues rock and fun vibe. Overall pretty enjoyable albeit a bit forgettable for me. Not many or the songs held my attention very well but they were all pleasent Standouts Stay with Me 3/5

Ah, Rod Stewart when he was young and weedy, not like now where he's old and creepy.

A solid rocker. I like the Rod Stewart tracks a bit more than the Ronnie Lane-fronted ones. Rod's belting voice and swagger rise above Ronnie's. Hey, look! It's Kenny Jones again on drums! Man, that guy sure was busy.

Tilþrifalítið blússkotið rokk

Didn’t realize this was early Rod Stewart until told, fun - not as gravelly sounding

rock on 🤘 reminds me of my dad. really fun, would have loved to have been alive to experience this live.

Old-timey rock. As much as I don't like Rod Stewart (rock-n-roll's peacock), I didn't hate this album. The guitar solo on "That's All You Need" is awesome.

#465. So we've had one of Rod Stewart's solo albums, Rod Stewart singing for Jeff Beck, and now one more with his band Faces [and not even the one with ooh la la on it]. So can we all collectively agree that this has been enough Rod Stewart and move on? 3/5: also that album title is stupid as fuck.

Yup, enjoyed this one!

I would like to like the Faces but I don't seem to, no matter how much I try.

Interesting how much Rod Stewart appears in this project despite only having two solo albums in the collection. Unfortunate for those of us who aren't big fans of his raspy style, and I'll admit I'm not sure if I mind him or not--I kind of think of him as the Tom Cruise or Keanu Reeves of 70s/80s rock, where he seems to have limited talent but never actually gets in the way of an enjoyable experience and more often than not attaches himself to interesting projects. (And I know this isn't entirely fair to Keanu Reeves, as the more I read about him the more I recognize that he seems like a genuinely nice guy; however, I'm not sure anyone would describe him as an extraordinary thespian.) That said, this album seems very middle of the road, which is kind of disappointing, especially given the clearly talented lineup in Faces, but not entirely surprising either. (But soo much easier to listen to than the Small Faces album in this collection.) It's fine for a half-hour or so of 70s rock, but doesn't really seem all that distinctive, although "Stay with me" is rightfully a classic, and "That's all you need" has a nice vibe to it. It's also nice to have more than just Stewart on lead vocals, and something about Ronnie Lane's vocals on his songs ("You're so rude", "Last orders please" and the highlight "Debris") had almost a Dylanesque aspect to it. Also very funny that the poster that came with original album distribution was so scandalous that the select few fans who got the poster before it was recalled had overnight collector's items.

I always appreciate Rod Stewards voice even if his music is mid. This album was good but forgettable

Better than the Bowie album. This kind of 70's rock is more enjoyable to my ear. There were a couple songs I enjoyed

3.5 Very solid rock and roll, a fun listen

My grandma really liked Rod Stewart while I was growing up and in her Western PA accent it sounded like she was talking about "Rawn Stored." An acedote irrelevant to this album, which was fine.

wish i was in the universe where the faces got huge and lived forever and the stones were the also ran

this was fine

5/10 70's guitar...and stuff 12-18-2024

No strong feelings 3/5

Good album

Did not realise the singer was Rod Stewart, listening again it's really obvious. He's got a distinctive voice, it works here. Middle of the road bluesy rock otherwise, bit too much slide guitar that starts to stray into country music. Not terrible, not great, 2.5.

This was better than I was expecting. I like the album title! Considerably better than any of his solo stuff imo. Stay with me is the clear highlight

The Faces are such a 3/5 band. No-one ever needs to hear the big hits like Stay With Me ever again, and the essentially great easy living bottle of whiskey and a fag vibe is fairly evenly spread over everything else. 35 mins though is about right.

Pretty good in parts

I rarely comment on the album's title, but please... What the hell is that. I wanna know who came up with that :D About the music. Rod Stewart brings himself in with a great voice. There is a great psychedelic guitar play. Although they bring a bit too much from country in the moments. In the end even the one hit song didn't make me a huge fan. I can see them being succesful in 1971, but there were bands before them, which made that kind of music, and certainly there were a lot of bands after them which made that kind of music. The Faces were just a one from the good ones.

Solid classic rock offering from Faces. At times it seems a little unorganized, a little raw, but I think that’s part of the appeal as well. Nothing really extraordinary here, but it gets the job done.

But more rap than I was expecting. Not my favourite.

It was fine but nothing stood out in particular

This is a decent album. It has some good songs that I’ve heard before. The rest sound like Southern 70s country rock. 2.75/5

Pretty good blues rock record, reminds me of the Stones, overall not bad, feel some of the songs aren't as good as others. What I do like is the live feel the album has, certainly the singing and playing are very good

Dad rock to the max. Not bad, Stay with Me is an undeniable hit and this absolutely launched Rod. But it's an album of dudes fuzzin out on the guitar and signing about sex.

pre: I love the Faces. Rod Stewart without quite so much pretense. mid: maybe I only like the singles or the up beat numbers. This album feels very uneven to me I found this super uneven. If any one of these songs came on the radio I'd be happy, but I found listening to them in order to be a chore. 2 as an album, 3 as a collection of singles to sample

I like this album, but don’t love it. I cannot hear Rod Stewart’s voice and not think I hear “Maggie”, hahaha! Overall though there were quite a few good songs, I was hoping for Ooh, La, La since I fell in love with that song when Tim Armstrong covered it. I could see myself digging a little deeper into the Faces/Small Faces catalogs.

Great English blues album

Having zero prior knowledge of Faces, after few tracks, I was like, “Wow, this singer is really going for a Rod Stewart thing” I’m dumb. Decent enough album, Miss Judy’s farm had some good jam to it, though I didn’t appreciate that Rod wanted to kick that poor dog. Stay With Me riff was instantly recognizable. Yea, it was a decent album, nothing terribly remarkable but good. 3 stars

Being one half of UK ‘Dad rock’ pioneers, Houmous and Chutney gives me a great insight into longevity and what it takes to make a commercially viable, timeless record. It’s about staying power and riding the waves as they approach. Unlike Rod, who went off to America and ‘went soft’. 3.2

If an alchemist were tasked with distilling pure sexual energy in a band frontman, they’d likely end up with Rod Stewart. Not as tawdry as Jaggar and less earnest than Daltrey or Plant, Stewart may be best described as - I don’t know - cheeky? Like he’s aware that we’re aware of the improbability of it, but he’s just gonna own it until last call. The Faces are fast, loose, and loud like your favorite bar band. This is bloozy rock where you can smell the stale beer when the needle drops. They are good while being the opposite of tight, the anti-Steely Dan. Some songs you feel like the wheels are just going to come off but the pure gravitational force emanating from the different parts holds it together without assuring us that we are out of danger. This is most emblematically felt on “Stay With Me,” the Faces breakout hit on their second album of 1971, which is anything but a love song. It winds up, takes off, slows down, careens, and pulses with intense energy that never takes itself too seriously. Stewart shares lead vocals with Ronnie Lane, who contributes Debris, a touching ode to Lane’s father. It’s a standout track, but honestly, it is Stewart’s brashness meshed with the Faces’ loose electricity that makes A Nod Is As Good As A Wink…To A Blind Horse a must listen.

Solid Record from many established Musicians from their earlier days. Wont take that much away from it tho

6.5/10

Full of bluster and bravado, the Faces put out some decent rockers. Even with both Stewart and Lane poking a foot out the door, they still worked well together as a unit.

I was surprised I liked this album as much as I did, because I knew absolutely nothing about this band. I didn’t even know Rod Stewart had been in a band before his solo career 😅 I like Rod Stewart as much as the next gal, but I actually preferred the other guy’s voice to his. I especially liked the song Debris. And I extra especially like how the Brits say debris. It’s the cutest

Solid and pleasant early 70s soft rock. I can appreciate this style of music, I sometimes wish I'd lived back when this genre was dominant. Good but not great. Relatively forgettable, like Rod Stewart's solo work.

I'll say it. Rod Stewart should have stayed in Faces.

Stay with me / Debris

Gracias

Surprisingly enjoyable

Noh viitti kakkosia... iha kivalta kuullosti...

not that bad or anything but also definitely not for me…. highlights: stay with me, that’s all you need (oct 1 2024)

Klinkt wel goed, maar niet echt vernieuwend of origineel. Teksten af en toe wel leuk.

Rod Stewart sucks. This album was OK.

Nod bad, this one.

Some classic guitar bits and a very short tight album but very little stand out moments.

Always preferred Rod Stewart in the Faces rather than his solo work. Faces is a great name for what in hindsight is a supergroup. Bluesy rock and roll what is not to like. Stand out tracks: - Miss Judy's Farm - Love lives here - Stay with me - Debris

Took me a while to realize the singer was Rod Stewart. It felt like some of the songs were familiar. I would rate this album about the same as his other music that I've listened to.

Solid 70s blues rock record. Blazes thru the 36-minute runtime with strong riffs and energetic vocal performances from Rod Stewart. 3.5/5

First time listening to Faces. Much better than Rod Stewart's solo stuff IMO. A reasonably fun listen with some blues and southern rock influences. Reminds me of the Stones southern-rock phases.

Rod Stewart, surprisingly good

I didn't know Rod Stewart was in a band called Faces, and I didn't realize he was making music back in 1971 -- I always associated him more with the 80's for some reason. Anyhow, the album is OK. Some parts remind me of Rolling Stones. Some tracks have a throughline to newer stuff, like "That's All You Need" could easily be a Guns n Roses song. Rod's voice used to bother me but now I kinda like it. The album as a whole is OK.

When I rated "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" I commented that Small Faces could be good if they left all the story time stuff on the cutting room floor. This album sort of answers thst, since it's Small Faces with Rod Stewart. Turns out it's OK. Solid, even if nothing grabbed me particularly.

Understand why Rod Stewart went solo given his tracks are definitely stronger than the other guy (not worth looking up.) Has a similar ripping-off-American-blues sound (Brits copying Chuck Berry *never* gets old) that is saved by Rod's permanently-scraping-the-pan vocals - especially on Stay With Me.

This album had a few standout tracks such as Stay With Me but otherwise I didn't feel much of a connection to it. Maybe with more listens I would grow to enjoy it more.

Miss Judy’s Farm and Stay With Me are great songs. Rest is ok 3/5

Hmmm not bad but not remarkable

Miss Judy's Farm 3 You're So Rude 2.8 Love Lives Here 2.4 Last Orders Please 2.5 Stay with Me 3 Debris 3 Memphis 2.4 Too Bad 2.3 That's All You Need 2.4 Score: 2.644444444

Not awful, but also not the kind of thing I love — too slow and bluesy for my taste. I did enjoy Stay With Me.

Has some cool bluesy tracks and overall enjoyed it but nothing quite raised its head above the 'pretty good' bar. I quite like Rod's voice and it's better with this kind of backing than what I've heard of his solo work. The harmonica is one of the best things about this record though. The title is comfortably the worst.

3☆/5 08.23.2024

Surprisingly good. Wierd to see a british band dominate the southern USA rock vibe. Good music, flowing vocals fron Rod Stewart just a good album all around.

This is a groovy rock album. The guitar riffs are amazing. Certainly, an underrated one in the classic rock canon.

Solid jams. Didn’t jump out at me.

I was a fan, back in the day, so it was good to hear. 3*

Stay with me is an awesome song. Classic. The rest of the album has a similar vibe. Good listen overall. 3.5 stars

Feels like we are on a stretch of short albums which I really appreciate as I claw my way back to being caught up (I am behind by 35 at this writing) Recognized Stay With Me. Memphis has a great second half and I enjoyed Too Bad. I may not have been paying great attention, but as far as this style of rock goes, it is just a notch above average. Pretty jammy, but nothing really stood out to me. Last song had some distortion and some steel drums (?) that felt like they came out of nowhere.

Pretty whelming rock album. Rod Stewart's voice got a little old on this album. Nothing terrible about this was just good. Stay With Me is always an awesome song.

Quite enjoyable Very decent standard. Doesn't quite get to a 4 But good

I liked this, but not as much as the Jeff Beck “Truth” album yesterday. “Stay with me” clearly stands out as what would shape and define Rod’s style and sound moving forward. Great track.

Stay with me is a jam. The should’ve let Rodney sing every song. GTFO Ronnie!

Not much of it stood out to me and I don't think I'll be returning to it, but I liked it.

At least theres Ronnie Lane

bit of a mixed bag, but the record gets stronger as it progresses. not a fan of the mixing on some of the earlier tracks fave track: stay with me

The way Rod Stewart pronounced Tennessee bothered me, but other than that it was a solid album.

It's good for what it is, a straightforward, singer songwriter oriented rock album. Generally, the guitar doesn't fall into any boring patterns, the vocals have great energy, and the backing is solid. Despite near identical effects and mix between songs, I feel like the album flows well, although by 3 or 4 songs in, I already felt like they were going to largely fit the same mold with the following songs, in a rather plain, uninteresting way. For the right person, I would recommend this album whole heartedly, but it's not really my jam.

Fun stuff. Lots of swagger to Stewart, Wood, Bassist, et al.

Pretty good for what it is, but not really my thing.

This album is just like plain yogurt. It has the potential to be so much better, but it's perfectly okay the way it is.

I'm still little upset that they platformed Rod Stewart. But I'm rounding up to 3 stars because the music is listenable enough, although I will never listen to this album again.

Loose and ragged dirty pub rock'n'roll. Stay with me is 5 star but the rest doesn't hold up

Never heard of Faces. Good band and album. On par with a lot of the more well known stuff at the time.

Rod Stewart was in a blues/rock band??? Sign me up. First of all, great album name. Second, it’s solid from start to finish. Stewart is fantastic here, not what I expected. 7.3/10

This album was okay. I've never been a huge fan of British honky-tonk rock (why I've never been a big Stones fan) and I've never been a fan of Rod Stewart's voice. Nothing about this album changed my mind. There are some decent sounds and some good guitar solos, but there was nothing special about any of it. Very generic, nothing groundbreaking. And Rod's backing vocals sound like a cat in heat on "Debris." I'd rather listen to Chubby Checker or Muddy Waters or the Allman Brothers Band. Can't see myself ever purposely listening to this again. 3/5

Alrighty

Another "blind tasting" - listening without reading anything about this. It took a bar for me to recognise Rod Stewart. Ok Big Rock. I skip to the mist popular (played) track " Stay With Me" and it's big rock which would have been fun in the shag pile lined Bedford van, but I don't listen to or particular enjoy big glam rock. Enjoy fellas. Not my era or sweet spot.

Or, if you’re a Monty Python fan, it’s a “blind bat” (the Nudge Nudge piece). It’s just good to hear Ronnie Lane singing lead on 3 of the 4 songs he either wrote or co-wrote on this. He was much loved by fans & , after The Faces split in 1974, he continued performing even after being diagnosed with M.S., until his death in 1997. This was easily the Rod Stewart- led Faces most successful album. Stay With Me virtually became their theme song. I like the slowed-down version of Chuck Berry’s Memphis and I love Ronnie Wood’s slide guitar on That’s All You Need. I don’t think any of the 4 Stewart-led Faces albums are outstanding. I never saw them (although I did see Stewart perform solo; Wood with The Stones & McLagen in Billy Bragg’s late-90’s touring band) but I do get the impression they were a terrific live band. This is a fine record but not a great one.

Solid rock album of a bygone era that works great as background music. I don't need it on this list though.

This is a good album. So nearly very good

I'm not a massive fan of Rod Stewart, but this was just about bearable. Nothing special though, so 3 stars for it not being too long.

Not until Primal Scream wrote Screamadelica did band want to become the Rolling Stones more. Couple of good tracks, but most just 1970s filler rock.

Apart from the occasional total misfire (the hackneyed and utterly pointless "Last Orders, Please"), those are more-than-decent rock jams, plus two nice ballads. The thing is, as well-performed and well-arranged as those songs are, they are still meat-and-potatoes cuts lacking any truly creative spark on a compositional level. The LP preceding this one, *Long Player*, had a clear stand out track with "Sweet Lady Mary", a ballad that was both moving and harmonically rich. And it had a stellar version of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed". Unfortunately, nothing in *A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse* reaches that level. Rod Stewart can show off his raucous vocal skills all he wants, the tunes he sings are ultimately vapid, as impressive as the instrumental layers of the music can be at times (especially in closer "That's All You Need"). Someone should clean up Dimery's list and take out those secondary records that didn't pass the test of time, contrary to many similar acts from the sixties and seventies on both sides of the pond. More room for more recent "essential albums". 2.5/5 for the purposes of this list rounded up to 3. 7.5/10 for more general purposes (5 + 2.5) Number of albums left to review: 171 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 361 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 208 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 264 (including this one)

Say what? Faces? Never heard of them. Stay With Me? Sure, that’s a Sir Rod Stewart song. Seriously, that guy robbed more cradles than Hugh Hefner. When he dies, the makers of Viagra will hang his picture in their lobby in tribute. He’s only 80, so he’s got a few years left to woo another super model. Isn’t love grand? The albums is pretty good. Fun, upbeat. I gave it a few spins.

Pleasant listen, but nothing really to keep from here!

Yeah I enjoyed it. Yeah it probably belongs on this list if for no other reason than because lots of people probably don’t know that Rod Stewart was in this band. Still it was relatively boring and benign. 3.5 stars

2 great songs, nothing special about the rest

Grupo de Rod Stewart. Rock de Rod Stewart.

decent

Two Things: Rod Stewart possessed the finest searing rasp of a Rock N Roll voice ever committed to tape. He recorded some amazing shit with some heavy hitters, but as his solo career began to take off, he strayed from this epic ability presented in a rough and ready way toward something that appealed to masses, and it's been a slow slide to Vegas ever since. Last time I checked, there were showgirls and a holy fuck ton of lame, and Rod fartin' through his hits. After Marriot left and they became The Faces (not Rod Stewart and...), their genius was never captured in the LP format. Never. If you want to fall in love, track down the boxset Five Guys Walk into a Bar... . It is the BBC performances that truly make the legend. After that, hit YouTube and type in "Faces BBC Live" and watch that shit in action. That's why they are legendary. That's why Rod Stewart is ROD FUCKING STEWART.

3.5 if possible

Decent. We like it.

Decent but not special.

This album didn't really stand out to me all that much, even though it was a fine listen. I did like the Memphis, Tennessee cover, even more than the original. I also liked Miss Judy's Farm.

Generic 70s rock.

It was okay.

A super solid early 70s rock album. Straightforward, no weird recording effects, nothing special about how it was recorded, nothing novel in terms of instrumentation or production. It kind of makes you wonder why it was included in this list. But whatever the reason I'm glad it was. It was fun to listen to and I love how it isn't perfect by any means. I do wish that Rod Stewart had been the singer for all the songs, I wonder about the fights they must have had around that descision. Not much else to say about this one, solidly middle of the road. 3/5

Is this the best or worst album title on the list? I can't decide. Not my bag, but I would up enjoying it as it went. Some poppy blues and as much as the pint sized scot is a bit of a prick, he has some.pipes on him. A good three stars, but better than expected.

roddy boy

Nothing too crazy, pretty standard rock n roll album. Rod Stewart isn’t as outwardly horny when he’s in a band.

I like Rod's voice in this context, more rock, less cheese? Stay with me is such a banger.

Not as bad as I thought

- Kurz, aber cooles Zeug dabei

The songs with Rod Stewart on vocals are much more engaging and memorable. The ones with Ronnie Lane are a major let down, and keep the album from maintaining momentum. Now that we have sampled the full range of Rod Stewart, I can say that his work with Jeff Beck was my favorite, with Faces and his solo hits a bit below. He’s an artist really best enjoyed via best-of compilations. The original album apparently came with a poster that was a collage of pictures that included the band and crew with naked groupies. It amazes me the pull that Rod Stewart apparently had. That voice, sure. But the face? And the hair? It was a different time? I remember being surprised in the 90s that he was with Rachel Hunter, but apparently he’s been with quite the string of models, with eight kids from five different women. It’s apparently been like that for his whole career, though hearing his work with Jeff Beck and Faces have finally helped me understand the context of all that. But the best Rod Stewart knowledge to come from all this is definitely that he is a model train enthusiast, with a collection that includes a layout that is more square feet than the average American home. Toot, toot, Rod!

I like Rod Stewart fronting a band instead of being a solo pop act. Here the guitar fuzz mixes well with his fuzzy vocals.

Rock, 1971

"Sit down, get up, get out, stay with me" Quit barking orders and make up your mind, Rod

Good, I especially liked "Love Lives Here" and "Debris". I look forward to revisiting this.

Decent - Rod Stewart should've sang all the songs but it'd still be a 3 for me. Stay With Me is a rude crude bop, haha.

For a British rock album, it feels pretty American, which of course there's constant cultural overlap in music but it still struck me as interesting.

Not terrible, but every track just feels like it's missing something. Also just not a fan of the general mix on this album.

It was alright

Album # 38 The faces of all the music that would come from this genre and band. The group of musicians came together, found the sound and regurgitated their voices and chords onto musicians that followed their lead. The band members also spread out into the music universe to expand their cult of redundant 70's music culture onto an unsuspecting world.

I was trying to think of something clever with the album title but I’m not feeling it today. I am the blind horse and these solid albums all hit the same

My parents love Rod Stewart/Faces so A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse was a familiar enough listen even if I'm not really up on specifics, except Stay With Me, a song I love. I got what I expected here, some standard rock and roll with gravelly vocals and a generally good old time. Love Lives Here and Too Bad are top songs outside of the big one, That's All You Need is a mixed bag to close it but the best parts of the song really hit for me, power, arrogance, fun, the lot. I liked this album for what it is, it's not pushing 4 or 5 territory but a good and nostalgic listen for an easy 3.

This was fine, Stay With Me is a brilliant song, but the rest pales by comparison really. Think that elevates it to a middling 3 - I quite like Rod Stewart's voice (though I get why people wouldn't), but there's just not that much of interest here. Decent energy in places - Too Bad has got a bit of oomph to it - but the more bluesy it gets the more boring it gets. 3/5.

If you like Rod Stewart, you'll probably like Faces.

Good old rock with slight country influence. Enjoyable listening to if not 100% my style

Heltokejsväng!

the vocals ruin it for me, still solid tho

Slow British rock. Ok background music, but nothing I will revisit.

Perfectly fine 3 star album. Nothing great. Nothing terrible.

I found this record to mostly just be okay. Rod Stewart's voice is kind of cheesy to me. It feels like it's trying to be an American country rock album but it doesn't quite land. Probably due to them being English. Best song is probably Stay with Me which is pretty catchy and has fun guitar riffs.

Generic rock album. Nothing outstanding.

Nice but a little boring

This really wasn't a bad album, but it also really never blew me away.

Nokkuð þétt, nokkur mjög góð lög.

Have I just been bamboozled into listening to Rod Stewart?

Favorite Tracks: Stay With Me Miss Judy’s Farm Too Bad

A fun rock album. Good background music.

Jeff Beck 2 Electric Boogaloo: slighty more 🧸able ⬜️ ness Rod Stewart isn't too bad tbh and debris really is a sick song Best Song: Debris Worst Song: That's all you need

A Nod is as Good as a Wink truly showcases the remarkable talents of the Faces. From the raw and passionate energy to the fun-filled vibes, this album captures the essence of a live performance. The album's ballsy sound and the opportunity to hear Rod Stewart's voice in its full strength make it a must-listen, cementing it as a classic. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 5 STAND OUT TRACK - That's All You Need

A fun 70s rock one. The first song is insane but I was a little let down after that

Not bad, just a little too Rod Stewarty for me. A couple good songs but most of them just blend together.

I didnt know Rod Stewart was in a band before

This was fairly forgettable but not terrible.

Pretty cool

HL: "Stay With Me", "Debris", "That's All You Need" December 7, 2023

Architected beautifully. Very well put together album, with some high level songs but mostly 70s era rock calling. Not bad but not incredible 3.5/5

Pretty standard boomer rock. It's something you'd find on at the shop for sure. Not the greatest thing I've ever listened to, but not offensive either.

the hit is the worst song here… but i dug it! the last song i really liked i think….

Generic solid rock n roll. It was totally fine

Average 3 per track. Pretty decent but didn’t seem to groundbreaking.

Cool album, side 2 is especially good. Ronnie Lane doesn’t need to sing when you have Rod Stewart in your band. I liked it more than I thought I would. Love the guitar.

solid, could go 3.5

I like Rod Stewart, so I liked this album too. Some good early 70s guitar driven rock band music.

Good sound. Solid rock n roll

i've already listened to two rod stewart albums as part of this project, and i of course already knew the song "stay with me." but this felt rather lackluster! i didn't get a sense of the creativity i was used to on those two stewart albums. and i'm sure part of it is that i enjoy stewart's crackly voice more than i realized! that must be why i've always enjoyed "stay with me." but there's more of a focus on the instruments here, not just the vocals. all in all, this album really is just fine, but i wish it was more. a low 3.
