Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Some classics here

Nice mood and songwriting, but I could do without Cooke reminding me to "get in the mood" or whatever every five seconds. A decent record.

I adore Sam Cooke, always have. But I can’t understand why this particular album is on the list. The live recording does the musicians in his band no justice. Sam’s voice rings through pure and true, he sounds great and like he’s having so much fun. But the music and the bar and the crowd create such a distracting racket.

3.5 - Definitely raw - Sam Cooke’s voice that normally sounds so smooth in the studio, is surprisingly gritty here. You also hear lots of audience chatter which in this case I find more annoying than ambient. I do love the improvised beginning of “Bring It On Home” and Sam’s soaring vocals.

Sam Cooke was an immensely talented soul, doo-wop, and occasional shout singer-- and an early pioneer for black music in America. You really cannot understate how fine a voice he had. And while it will make my step grandfather roll over in his grave (doo-wop and early RnB's greatest fan), I rarely have a need of Sam Cooke and this music is just not something I ever listen to. I've heard most of the songs before and I totally get why they were highly important. Bring it on Home (both versions) are the high point for me.

Sounds like a party.

Sam Cooke , great voice, so smooth, but the album seemed a bit repetitive

Pretty good. Not my favorite but pretty good.

*Feel It (Don’t Fight It)

A passionate and energetic performance, with the comfortable feel of a hometown show, sing alongs and all.

Lo puse de sonido de fondo.

Iconic live album with a peep into the past

Nice live album. Very groovy. Amusing that it was viewed as "too gritty" for his then-public image and archived by RCA for twenty years.

It hasn't changed my life, but it was an enjoyable listen

It’s fine. Basically a greatest hits album. 3/5

Pretty good, Still not the biggest fan of live music.

I haven't really listened to Sam Cooke before, so don't know how this compares to the studio versions. As a live recording, this is pretty good. The way you can hear the crowd throughout, and you can tell they were just having a ball. You can imagine what it would have been like to be there. Sam has a strong, raspy kind of voice, well suited to this kind of music. The songs did get a bit "samey" for me, but all clipped along at a nice pace and kept the part-vibe going.

Recognized the song Cupid because Carly Rae Jepson sampled it in one of her songs which is a little embarrassing for me. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

energetic

Classic soul by one of the genre's great artists. Nice, but sadly not my kind of music. 2.5/5

Jazzy, crunchy, showman, kæmpe swing, kæmpe live lyd

Twisting the Night Away is fantastic. Classic song. I love the live performance as well. Full of energy and soul. However, most song are very similar and started to blend together after awhile.

I don’t generally like live albums because of the sound and the songs are played differently and audience sounds. However this one was brilliant. The sound was clear and crisp and showed just what a voice Sam Cooke has.

I actually like Feel It (Don't Fight It) Don't usually like live albums but hearing the singer go "I love this song" in the middle of his song is quite fun As well as hearing him feed the audience the lyrics before he sings them! Probably wouldn't listen again but it wasn't bad, just not really my thing

A solid soul performance

Live version not my favorite

Never really got into live albums. But Sam seems like as good as anyone to break that trend. Ok that man has charisma in spades. Really liked it actually, but I think the nature of live albums means its gonna be a 3. But I can see circumstances where I might play this. PS: This activity makes you crave short albums, but ironically if you really love an album you have no problem with a longer run time. 40 mins may be the perfect run time though.

Live Sam Cooke album. I did not know this album but knew practically every song. It is a live album which I do not think should belong to the list. Hence 3 stars but the music is obviously 5 stars.

I liked this more than I thought I would, given that it is an old live album. I really don’t know much about Sam Cooke, but I liked the songs. Not much else to say about it.

not bad but live... wtf

Really enjoyed this one.

Feels like the kind of album I want to sit down and give a more active listen to.

I'm not really loving it, as it's not my groove, but I am loving the passion and the energy. It sounds like it would have been a grand old time.

This album is pretty good. The music is good, but I'm personally not a fan of live albums. But the music is pretty good, although some of the songs do sound similar. But overall it's pretty good. Favorite song: Having a Party Worst song:Twistin' the Night Away

Sam's voice sounds a little rougher here than I'm used to. I'm a big fan of his studio work, and while it would have been a great pleasure to be present at this performance, I feel like the recording doesn't really capture the full range of dynamics. That's largely due to the technology of the time, so you just have to be happy to at least have this document.

Proto-James Brown meets fictional character Shy Baldwin. Huh, A Huh Huh, A Step Back!

Nice to hear some energetic live music from Harlem. Sam is in good humour and pulls out the hits, the songs are good but just a bit simplistic.

It does what it says on the tin and that's great if you like that sort of thing. (3.0)

Really appropriate mix in the week before my wedding. Great voice and energy. Band is kinda far back in the mix behind Sam. Pacing is a bit...intense. Will definitely listen again.

Good jams Favorites: Cupid, It’s All Right/ For Sentimental Reasons & Bring it on home to me

I didn't find this as ground-breaking as other people seem to think.

Standouts: Chain Gang, Cupid, Twistin' The Night Away, Others: Bring it On Home to Me, Having a Party

Good shit to get moving

ALBUM RATING: 3.4 ALBUM GRADE: C+ TRACK RATINGS: 1. Soul Twist / Introduction - 3.0 2. Feel It (Don’t Fight It) - 3.5 3. Chain Gang - 3.0 4. Cupid - 3.5 5. It’s All Right / For Sentimental Reasons - 3.5 6. Twisting’ the Night Away - 3.0 7. Somebody Have Mercy - 3.5 8. Bring It On Home to Me - 3.5 9. Nothing Can Change This Love - 3.5 10. Having a Party - 3.5

I'm not a big fan of live albums. Sam Cooke is great, though.

Okay album. Good individual songs but as a whole gets very similar. Would be great to have seen live.

6/10 not my style but definitely appreciate the musical geniusness

Not my favorite thing in the world but I would listen again. I think I need to be in a particular mood in order to listen to it.

Does he tell the crowd he doesn’t have leukemia in the middle of Somebody Have Mercy? That’s weird

This era of soul and Jazz normally impresses me and I love Sam Cooke but this was fine. Well performed and fun but I wasn’t able to get into this one like I the James Brown one (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ BTW). It didn’t help that he didn’t play any of my favorites by him. All in all pretty serviceable but tired. Favorites: Soul Twist, Chain Gang, Twistin The Night Away, Bring it On Home to Me

Alright but didn't blow me away

Fun album, but I probably wouldn't go back to it.

A fuir.

Great vibes, passion and spirit

It was good; it felt like he was rushing through some of the songs though.

Not really a fan of the live album releases

Sounds like some old soul music for sure but being a live performance there was a whole different energy cause he was goin crazy with it

Again, not sure live albums should be on this list. But, he’s a great singer/performer and this would have been a great fucking show.

One of those instances where the performer isnt so good live

i really hate live recordings. this is not an exception to that rule. i really enjoy cooke, but i can't give this a fair rating when i'm so bothered by the setting. meh.

1963. Chain Gang

INTRODUCTION - Coolt. FEEL IT (DON'T FIGHT IT) - Bluesig. Mmmmm. Snyggt slut. MEDLEY: IT'S ALL RIGHT - Shake them up som han säger så skakas man när man hör detta. 60-tals powerballad. Let's get romantic. Sam vet hur man underhåller publiken i alla fall. TWISTIN' THE NIGHT AWAY - Dags att twista till denna. Refrängen har bluesform. Annars är versen klassisk I-vi-IV-V ackordgång. Folket älskade nog detta back then. SOMEBODY HAVE MERCY - Allt var fan blues back then. Så inflytelserik. Börjar bli sömnig. BRING IT ON HOME TO ME - Ja. Vad ska man säga. Soul i små doser tack. hmmm. Men rösten goddamn. NOTHING CAN CHANGE THIS LOVE - Alla låtar lät fan likadant och Sam skriker mycket. HAVING A PARTY - Off with a bang. NON STOP ACTION. GE MIG ETT BREAK!

Sounds like a good fun time. Sam holds the room nicely. Fave: Cupid, and Nothing Can Change This Love

classic

If you've heard one song on this album, you've heard them all

I like this style of singing for a few songs, but a whole album is too much.

I wish I could have been there live, but I wasn’t digging the recording because the singing just never stopped. Would have liked some space in there so instruments could shine. Cooke’s voice is outstanding but too relentless.

I’m sure much is to be made of his voice, but the real takeaway for me is the really great preparation of his band. They keep the party moving like a skilled DJ might! Without the crutch of easy cues and a tempo fader. I don’t think I’d listened to much of him at all before, if any, but it’s cool to take in the raw crowd pleasing power and charisma even if he doesn’t make me, personally, swoon.

I like Sam Cooke and it's great to hear a genuine live performance with the bits in between. The production and vocals aren't as crisp as a studio recording but it's great that these were preserved. I would argue that this is his ONLY album in 1001 and that there are better albums of his. There seems to be a slant towards live albums in this chart which is ok if that's your thing but it's not what people primarily listen to and they only like the live albums off the back of the studio albums.

Such a great gig: blistering performance from Sam and his band. Songs are too samey for it to be a great album for me but most enjoyable nevertheless.

enjoyable listen

This was not quite my style, but I enjoyed listening to it.

Schlechte drei.

I didn't realize until now that Sam wrote all of these big hits! I'd just assumed that they got churned out by the boys at the Brill Building. This is a raw & energetic performance with a crowd who are madly in love with him. He's very talented all-round. This music isn't exactly my cup of tea so it's hard to assess, but that's the charm of 1001.

There are a few Live Concerts where it would be remembered for the rest of your life. I think this one would be on that list. Sam Cooke is just a fantastic vocalist and he made such happy songs that folks love to sing along to.

Never been a big fan of the live album, rather have a studio record. The album is good though. Great voice and some good songs. Favourite songs: - Feel it (don’t fight it) - Twistin’ the night away

Apresentação ao vivo de soul bem expressiva.

Super fun. But, well, a live recording from the 60's, so also somewhat frustrating. It did send spotify off on quite a tear of fantastic music.

A lovely live recording bursting with energy. Cooke clearly enjoys being a conduit on center stage, leading the crowd in call-and-response refrains while providing a healthy dollop of banter on top.

The album with the studio version of For Sentimental reasons was definitely 4 stars.

Sam Cooke is great. Understatement of the year. I don't understand why the editors of this list have a problem with best of albums while also including several "live from a night club" entries. I want to hear the music, not the banter between artist and crowd. He had plenty of studio albums. At least one of those should have made the cut instead. Best track: Medley: It's All Right/For Sentimental Reasons

Liked his music just it a fan of Live recordings

ooo a live album, good for sam cooke! I listened to a little bit but I'm not a big live album guy.

I count Sam Cooke among the greatest soul singers of all time, and he's responsible for one of my favorite songs ever written, "A Change is Gonna Come." That's not on here though. This is a live album that I believe predates that song entirely. Why the list makers chose this is beyond me. Sure, it's a great live performance, but if you're only going to include one Sam Cooke album how can you overlook his crowning achievement? And why are guys like Sam Cooke and James Brown limited to one, live album on this list while we get unlimited nondescript British rock albums? Sus. Sam deserves better. Favorite tracks: Feel It, It's All Right, Somebody Have Mercy, Twistin' the Night Away. Album art: Wow, a picture of Sam onstage. Hooray. 3/5

A Change didn't come. :-( I think I prefer the studio albums. Still, Sam Cooke, what a star!

bit stop start, doesn't quite carry through

I like live albums like this where you hear the raw performance, some are recorded live and 'enhanced' in the studio. This is a good archive of a performer that did not get to stick around to prove his value as one of the greatest singers around. Bonus points for King Curtis blowing on the sax, you can tell the influence he had on players like Clarence Clemmons. 3.5/5

Strong as an oak, comes from a time I’d love to be a fly on the wall of dance halls back in the day.

Good fun.

good vibes, vill ligga m sam cooke

Raucous, fast paced fun. This style of music feels a bit repetitive now but the energy really makes up for that

Good for a listening, probably won't listen again.

Enjoyed this quite a bit. Fun album

3.5/5 i'll have to relisten!

eh - not my style but kinda neat for 1963

Så svinger det, soul, kærlighed, simpelt, live

It's okay, I guess? Not something I expected to say about a live album by one of the most exciting soul singers at the height of his powers. He does the hits and it all sounds very professional by which I actually mean that he sounds a bit like he knows his taxi is standing outside of the venue ready to take him to the next club where he will do the same set. 6/10

I'm still not sold on live albums being in this list... but this is better than most of the late 60s/early 70s garbage it usually throws at me. And the guy wrote his own songs, so that's a plus - this sorta soul rock stuff is usually "standards". 3/5.

Straight out of the first act of Goodfellas. Nice vibe. Don't think I'd revisit but the energy is great.

Great voice.

America, 60s, Soul + Funny, Dancin = Male, Live - Old-fashioned, Alike {1/10} [3/5]

I quina veu. I quina banda. He de dir, però, que fa poc em va tocar el 'Live at the Apollo' de James Brown... I bé, les comparacions són odioses...

Fun, energetic, and wild.

Great fun to listen to on a Sunday afternoon.

Not the kind of music I'd probably ever ask for, but nice enough to listen to.

Pretty good classic songs. Missing something. Don't quite know what. Ok live album, sound quality isn't the greatest. Enjoyed it.

Sam Cooke inspired the great rock bands, and I like his band, songs, and voice. But I do not like live albums.

- Bring It On Home to Me - It's All Right / Sentimental Reasons - Nothing Can Change This Love

I'm rating the album not the artist. Sam Cooke is one of the most influential soul singers of all time, the Bob Dylan of soul, but there's no way I could rate his work. What I will say is that this album does reflect his energy and enthusiasm. He sings some of his best songs, including Cupid and Bring It On Home. The recording is clear and crisp. But I feel like a voyeur overhearing Sam Cooke interacting with his rowdy audience. None of the songs are amazing by today's standard, just some are classics. But the majority does get repetitive and shallow. It feels more like I'm hearing Sam Cooke perform rather than hearing great compositions.

They say it's one of the best live albums, I dig it.

An energetic (if somewhat dated) performance with style and personality.

A fantastic performance and great songs. It brings home why he's regarded as such a legend. Still, for me, it was lacking anything to really hook me in. Just 10 minutes after listening for the 2nd time I've already forgotten about most of it, and I'm feeling no urge to listen to it again.

Oooooh fuck yeah this is gonna be good. I've heard songs from this but haven't done the whole thing all the way through. I liked it! I don't know if I'd listen to it a ton on its own really but I loved hearing the audience participation. Woulda been dope to be in that small club.

Must have been a great live experience, very soulful and passionate

Didn't do much for me.

Decent album, good live performance. Reminds me of James Brown, but probably will not listen again.

This album was good, I enjoyed the sound despite not usually listening to similar stuff. However I didn't like that it was a live show recording- there was too much sound from the audience and it was distracting. It also wasn't super memorable, although it was nice to listen to for a bit.

Good, but dont love the recordings of live performances as much as studio recordings

Chill, old school classic. 3/5

Ok if you’re in the mood.

Enjoyed as background music, but to listen to I found that I was distracted by the chatting etc.

Sam Cooke was definitely a showman, I laying to the audience and pumping them up throughout, seems like this would’ve been a fun show to be at. The energy is palpable in the build up intro of “Bring it Home” they’re eating out of his hand. The show seems to be relentless, once one song ends, the band picks up and starts playing the next one—the showman work ethic is apparent. Loved “Having a Party,” hypnotic and made you want to party. The album is fairly one note, but it’s surely toe tappin.’ I’ve always found Sam cook’s voice to be just okay, velvety, but lacking something other soul singers like Otis Redding have. But this show has a raspy edge to it that you can only barely usually hear. I think he’s got some more hits to come and this isn’t his best work. Fun album though. 3.

It's fine, not my favorite concert to listen to, but I found it really funny that Sam Cooke would end every song by saying the song's name right after as a kind of inbetween songs talk

"Don't fight the chip" (Feel it) "You know we sang so many notes So many fan songs We get it twisted a little while" (It's alright/ For sentimental reasons) La gente que fue a este concierto se lo tuvo que pasar SÚPER BIEN.

Really enjoyed this. Makes me want to get up and dance.

Schon nett, insgesamt eher so ein Partyding

Nice to have listened to this performance in my birthyear. I can remember this music being played on the radio in my youth.

Pretty fun. Lot of energy, but some repetition (maybe that's just the genre and the time period). I did like the crowd participation--you can just tell everyone's having a great time.

I might be rating harshly, and I love me some Sam Cooke, but I feel there was nothing that stood out on this. Would have been amazing being there live.

Has some of the sam cooke greatest hits. Chain Gang, Cupid, and more

Definition of jazzy

Sam Cooke is in decent form on this live record which includes some of his best-known songs ("Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Twistin' The Night Away"), but aside from those tracks, the remainder of this album is mostly run-of-the-mill R&B. Also, the intent of this record seems to be to capture the onstage energy of a Cooke concert but the band is loose to point of being ragged and the audio quality is no better than that of a bootleg, both of which dilute the impact of his performance.

I think Sam Cooke has some great hits but ive never been a fan off live albums.

Sepia prom

It would have been a good gig. But all these songs were tighter, cooler, sharper in their studio forms. The record company were right not to release it in 1962. It’s a historical curio for those deeply immersed in his work. Interesting but I’d hate to think this was the only Sam Cooke someone heard before they died.

Back to back live soul albums, and this one is quite a bit worse, just did not hit for me at all.

Fine recording but I learned more about his dubious death rather than his music. I will say, the live version of Chain Gang is vastly superior to the studio version.

Sounds like a high school prom in the 60s. Good voice though. 2.5/5.0

Weird inclusion. Very meh live album. Sam Cooke has so many better albums.

o chato do simonal

Started off OK with a pleasant rock and roll swing to it, but the vocals and strange production choices quickly began to grate. My Mum's a fan of a couple of Sam Cooke's hits, so there were a few tracks which rang a bell for me, although if I ever wanted to hear them again I'd seek out the studio versions.

is oke

Wasn't a big fan of this live album

It was just more jazz

It feels sacrilegious to give an OG rock n roll artist a bad review. It just feels silly on paper, like giving a foundational rock album a bad score undermines the legitimacy of these reviews. But honestly this album, while it has its moments, it’s just alittle dry. And on top of that, I truly and sincerely don’t believe that live albums belong on this list. How do u even go about comparing a studio album to a live album? They are just so fundamentally different, and even the parameters you would use to grade them are completely different. I think if you are looking for an old school rock n roll album that doesn’t offer anything else, this is your album. But again, live albums should never be on this list…

sam cooke is tough but not my cup of tea to be honest.

I really wanted to like this but I didn’t find it as enjoyable as the Sarah Vaughan album we got recently. Still like Sam Cooke tho.

I'm glad I heard it, and I wouldn't mind listening again, but I wouldn't seek it out

I expected more from this. Sort of one dimensional, hard driving throughout. Reminds me of the James Brown live album. Sam Cooke’s singles were legendary and I don’t think this performance reflects the greatness of the artist.

Buen album

Few moments on this but I wasn't that engaged.

Big fan of Sam Cooke. And I get why this line album made the list, but unfortunately the live atmosphere ruins it for me.

it’s not doing much for me and i’m not fully sure why. it’s cute. doesn’t help that there’s a song that’s been ruined by overplay for me in the middle of the album. didn’t even like it that much to begin with. his energy is pretty great.

1. Okay, it's catchy. Nice voice. 2. Okay, catchy again. Not as fun as the last one. 3. yeah yeah it's good but, whatever. 4. Yeah, I don't know, I'm bored. 5.Okay, again, catchy but boring to me. Once again, god forgive me but I'm giving up. It's just not my thing. It started off strong but there's really nothing for me here.

This was probably a very fun concert to go to, unfortunately it wasn't the most fun to listen to. The energy and hype was great but it didn't translate to 'good music'. Not something I'd come back to.

Never heard of them. Favorites: - Thoughts: I don't think I like live albums. I don't have much thoughts didn't leave an impression.

Didn’t like it, while I completely understand the appeal, specifically for the first time it was released in, it’s just not for me

For such an old album it was fine, quite catchy

Enough of this genre now please

This not my type, but good old songs

the songs are a vibe to dance at a club but other than that i wouldnt listen to the songs. its just a jam as a dancer because some songs are very jivey.

Good voice and good crowd engagement. The rest of the music was only okay though.

Not for me

Bring it on Home to me is epic live! But I don’t generally love love live albums, they can be a bit too loud

I don’t usually listen to live albums but I enjoyed this one. Tom.

It's good, but not my thing.

I've never been a huge fan of live albums of any artista and when I listened this, Spotify started to play some non-live Sam Cooke after this album was played, it sounded much better to my ears. I can believe that this has been a pleasant experience in Harlem Square club back in sixties, but from the speakers here at my home, it does not work very well...

While there is certainly talent, it is just not for me.

🥇feel it (don’t fight it) 🥈chain gang 🥉bring it on home to me

Mediano!

i enjoyed but not my normal kinda sound . liked feel it (dont fight it)

Great album I just don’t think I would listen to it a lot

For me very standard soul which is not my thing. Couple of great tracks. My wife loved it. Very much her thing

For sure, this one is a solid historical document with plenty of energy, but it’s hard to compare this to high fidelity studio albums and the excellence of funk and soul records that would come next. I’m probably judging this too harshly, but… the recording quality is pretty rough, I hoped to recognize any of these songs, and I didn’t appreciate it that much.

Lyrics are soooooo repetitive

Funky 60s-70s dance at a bar

I found this a bit dull to be honest.

Too old can’t image myself listening to It anywhere.

I liked the song medley:it’s alright/for sentimental reasons. But the album is very intense

High 2, ‘‘twas alright

Why live?

I like Sam Cooke but live music to album never sounded great to me.

Some good tracks on here but I'm not a fan of live albums

Listenable but not my thing.

Not a fan of live albums. The sax solos are pretty tasty which saves it from a 1.

Not for me

Upbeat, soulful 50s style dance music. The kind where people put their hands together, press their cheeks together, and bounce side to side. It feels a bit too G rated, and the songs are all extremely similar. However, I like the snapshot into late 50s/early 60s culture and live music scene. Favorite song: Feel It (Don’t Fight It)

Finished

Great to discover new music, but this one is not for me.

It's okay. I'm not usually a fan of live albums so it doesn't help the rating. I can be into R&B/soul but it has to be really good.

Not much to say here, it's a great artist.Performing great songs live.I mean, it's just not special, though.Maybe it was a long time ago.It just isn't now. You don't get me wrong.I grew up on these songs. My parents, you know, listen to motown, but yeah, I just this isn't.This isn't great to me

A low score for this, which is in quite large part because you think of the raw power of his version of A Change Is Gonna Come, and then you hear this, and it's mostly him whooping and having a laugh with the crowd. And that's fine, of course it is. I'm not anti-fun per se. I just wanted a little bit more of the voice and little less of the party.

Beautiful vocals and instrumental. But it's not my style at all. I don't think I'll relisten to any of these songs. Favorite song: For sentimeltal reasons

Great vocals, but other than that not very interesting.

Of course Sam Cooke is one of the great immortal soul singers of all time, if not the very greatest, but honestly for all the excitement of this live set I've heard other versions of all these songs I just like better, and I'd rather listen to those.

So Sam Cooke is regarded the Father of Soul whilst James Brown is the Godfather of Soul. So who is the most important? Something to mull over whilst listening to this. But not me as I am definitely an anti soul boy. Hated it when I was young and unlike other forms of music which I once hated but now appreciate, I hate it still. That’s not to say that I don’t understand why Mr Cooke and Brown etc have a place in musical heritage because they do. Best thing about this album is that it is a continuous mash up of all those great soul classics and would be ideal at a BBQ party to get the guests moving. Meanwhile I would quite happily stand cooking with my AirPods in gently smiling whist I listen to ELP’s Brain Salad Surgery. 2/5 19/8/25

Nichts für mich

First of all I don’t like live albums and second of all this is not exactly my type of music

I've never liked live albums unless I've seen the performer

dont like

Really liked the sound and musicianship but had trouble staying engaged throughout.

Great energy but music didn't pull me in. I think you had to be there.

6/1001 :: Sam Cooke - One Night Stand! (Live At The Harlem Square Club) Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: Strong 4, Light 5 Fav Tracks: Bring It On Home To Me, Having A Party This show happened in 1963 in Harlem (NYC). My guess is the crowd was 95% black (or more at that time) and if you asked anyone who went; it was probably the best show they ever saw. Listening to the recording you can feel the energy in the room. Yelling, dancing, drinking and twisting the night away was had for sure. I’m not a Sam Cooke aficionado but I know some tracks. Love Bring It On Home To Me and he seemed like a gracious host here garnering crowd participation and singing his ass off. All that said, I’m not a huge live album guy unless the recording is really great and the performance is tight. This is not that at all. It’s very loose and there’s a lot of crowd noise which gives you a good feel for what happened at the show but takes away from the recording a bit. I did like the album better the 2nd time around and even dabbled in a 3rd listen and it kept my toe tapping. Overall while I could see my self snagging a Sam Cooke greatest hits this album is not something I would buy or probably reach for again.

Good listening. Not my cup of tea really. 2/5

He’s talented, but it’s just not my thing. I’ll give it a two because of twisted the night away!

Artiste inconnu. =>2/5

Do not love this era of music. So could not appreciate the skill and musicality

A live album always feels like a tough listen. What I will say is when it comes to they golden year of soul, you can feel the energy in the room and it would have been amazing to be there. Cooke's voice is amazing and doesn't faulter at any point. Chain gang is such a great song and was already a regular listen. Big Sam Cooke fan, would score higher if it wasn't a live album.

Album is fine it just doesn't stand out compared to today's music. I do however appreciate the album within the context of when it was recorded and the history of its release.

Eh, not my jam. Enjoyable but just not for me. 2/5 stars.

didn't do anything for me but equally i feel like it would of been amazing to actually be there

Generally, I wouldn't be able to tell what good soul/R&B is if I had it blasted in my ears, so I'm no authority to judge this album and my grade is in no way a reflection of the quality of it. I must say though, this was so fun and whimsical to listen to and vibe along to. So despite it being a genre I don't normally reach for, the overall experience of listening to it was quite enjoyable!

I don't quite get why live albums are on here

Listening to "One Night Stand - Sam Cooke live at the Harlem Square Club 1963" is a mixed experience. While the performance by Sam Cooke is undeniably great, the low quality recording of the live performance leaves much to be desired. I bet being there that night would have been an unforgettable experience, and it's wonderful that there is still something to remember it by.

The perfect LP for pumping yourself up to go creep on Mary Sue down at the Milk Bar while Dad works out his WW2 trauma on mum's jaw downstairs. In other words, beyond Feel It (which rocks), this is just too twee for my millenial ears to be able to fully appreciate - I guess we'll have to assume that "[chorus] bring your lovin home to me tonight (yea!) x 10" was a panty-dropper in the 60s (the crowd sounds like they're having the time of their lives). Sam Cooke's voice sounds really nice, but I just don't have enough musical context to overcome the generational barrier for this one.

Not really a great live album, but I do like his sound (listened to that sound a lot growing up)

Not my format

It's All Right/For Sentimental Reasons was an absolute banger Sounds like it would've been a class gig but live albums just dont do it for me

Okay. So I like Sam Cooke a lot, but I absolutely hate live albums. As such, this wasn't super enjoyable for me. I don't like to hear crowd noise, ad libs and mistakes, sorry, I just don't. The music was good, but I would have vastly preferred as studio album with the same tracks. Two stars -- would have been one star, but I like Sam Cooke.

It feels of its era. I can imagine people in the 60s dancing to this. I just don't think it would be my favourite genre of the era.

Chain Gang //

Very bluesy. Didn't expect much but started enjoying it at the end. Can definitely appreciate the voice, as well as the live factor of the performance. Saxophone solos actually rock. 2/5. Tbh, the blues style of Somebody Have Mercy is better than the faster styles.

Some good songs but wouldn’t listen a lot

Gives the impression to hear the same song 10 times.

I really like his voice. And the mood of this record. And the song "Twistin The Night Away". But as always I rate it down one star just because it is a live album. 2,5

Very fun listen, not an everyday playlist vibe but would be fun for gatherings

would have enjoyed if it was not live version

Recording quality not great

I think I could see myself getting behind a Sam Cooke studio album, but this was too muddy and muffled to rate higher than 2 stars.

Great energy throughout and fantastic vocal performance. The audience noise really helped with the whole feel good party vibe. My only criticism is that it’s a bit samey.

Its better in places than I expected. Really enjoyed 'Nothing Can Change This Love'. I felt the vibe he was obviously trying to create at the venue, generating a lot of energy and fun. Worth a high 2

I don't love most of the live albums, they tend to rely on energy and atmosphere I just don't quite feel. It's a decent set of songs and you can appreciate the charisma

Another live album. Still not a fan. The songs are decent, but again, being a live album just drags it. Best song: Chain Gang

Not so much.2

I'm a bit unsure how to rate it. I don't dislike anything on the album, but there is nothing that stands out. A high 2?

I enjoyed this but realistically it won’t be something I repeat.

Fun upbeat album. Not always the biggest fan of a live album but I had a good time

Enjoyable enough since he has a lot of good songs. The live album was an interesting one time listen. But the combo of the two makes me skeptical that I would ever seek it out again.

Not the biggest Sam Cooke fan, but nice atmosphere in the club.

I’m sure this was a great gig to be at, but it kinda leaves me a bit cold. All the audience participation bits don’t really do it for me. I love Sam’s music, but I’d much rather have the studio versions.

The energy he's bringing is great, the songs are good, but it just gives me a real sense of FOMO because it's clearly a gig you want to be at, not just listening to - not sure I'd give it another listen, as I tend to prefer studio versions of most albums (just personal opinion)

This is #day72 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here we are with a live soul/jazz album from the '60s... All I wanted to do while listening to it was turn the volume down... I couldn't stand the singing. This outpouring of emotions (or soul if you will) makes me feel absolutely nothing. Not the kind of record I'd want to revisit, if ever. Just like soul music in general, I guess. This is some 36 minutes long, but it felt like forever... This is a low 2 out of 5 this time. Again. Looking forward to #day73.

I've said before that I think live albums aren't great picks for "must listen" albums of all time, and this one is no exception. The audio quality isn't particularly good. It's a good show because Sam Cook is incredible and his songs are great. But, as someone who loves a good Sam Cook record, just listen to those instead.

It's All Right. But this whole thing seems a little rushed. No space between songs, trying really hard to get a sing-along going. Usually I hear a live recording like this, and wish I was there, but not this time. I also check out the artist for other recordings, and I found that the next year, 1964, he has another live album .... Sam Cooke At The Copa. Now THAT is one I wish I was in the audience. This one, not so much, Sorry Sam.

This really isn't the stye of album I like to listen to

More interesting as a historical document more than enjoyable, I think you had to be there.

It gets a bit much. I guess you had to be there. Twisting the Night Away was good though.

Ok. Take a deep breath and consider. This is the first time you’ve encountered Sam Cooke. Will you go back for more Y/N? Thought so.

I love Sam Cooke. I just can't get into this live album and that's a bummer for me.

-1 for being a live album, -1 for the band apparently not knowing the cues, -1 for so ga sounding almost completely the same

Good songs, weird mix, tired voice

Sound quality not good, but music great.

Immersive live recording. Great voice.

Great music, terrible recording.

Bored, not bad songs and I knew a lot, just not an interesting voice
