Reviews (page 5 of 8)
I love Nick Cave but sometimes hes a bit dull and this one was a bit slow. Didnt quite have the menance id want eithier.
Sublime, I was typing, just as Nick Sang it; beautiful; gentle; moody. It could really do wiv a bit of the ol' knees up muvver brown halfway through, though. Into My Arms is great, but unless you want to enter a long, dark teatime of the soul and wallow in your own self pity for a bit, there's no need for an hour of it.
One of their more lighter albums on the 1001 list... whilst still taking aim for those downwards brooding melancholy moods.
Samey in a good way
another nick cave! This was nice, mellow.
The weakest of the Cave albums I've listened to so far. Has a more mainstream, less unique sound than the others. Decent but nothing grabbed me. 2.9
I did not use a private session for either time I listened to this. I am a fan of Nick Cave's post punk angry harder music, but never got into this album. Its a complete departure but pleasant in mellow way. I will have to try to remember try to this out on chill Sunday morning.
Nice to hear. the lyrics are great, but I don't know what the fuss is about.
A bit mediocre for me but fine.
It's not that deep bro
this album is like sitting in a hotel lobby listening to a hired pianist
It's different and haunting and pretty. A la Shrek 2, makes you want to sulk in a weird dive bar. He continues to not be a good singer.
Huge Nick Cave fan but not my favorite album, I like the albums with more of an edge to them. BF liked the lyricism and called them reminiscent of Leonard Cohen & Lou Reed
I wasn't in the right mood to listen to this album. It's full of lots of slow, moody ballads. A good album, but you need to be in the right vibe to appreciate it.
Liked the piano focus behind his lyrics. His voice grows on you. Nice, although a bit somber, listen
This is a perfectly fine album but unfortunately a bit dull. I'm still trying to get into Nick Cave and I don't think that this will be the album to get me hooked but still I'm glad I checked it out. Favorite track: Idiot Prayer
people ain’t no good!!! nick has a cool voice
I love a spare, haunting, Nick Cave ballad, but these do get a bit repetitive as the album drags on.
Least terrible Nick Cave album.
This is the weakest Nick Cave album I've gotten yet. I really prefer his evil bluesy songs, these ballads are fine, but they all sound really repetitive. Nothing here is bad, just a little boring. I think there are enough Nick Cave albums on this list that this album could have probably been skipped. High 3.
"Into My Arms"... the comparisons to Leonard Cohen must be made on this one... i'm guessing, as i've always heard about Nick Cave... he's a few years older than me... but, i've never really gotten into his stuff... i'm not sure he ever really made it here in the USA, i could be wrong... but my first real listen to him had a pretty good opening... "Into My Arms" is a strong song... a bit downer for an opener... but, hey... "People Ain't No Good"... shows his artistry... i have to admit, my first foray into his stuff, has made me get a respect for his songwriting... and his sparse arrangements are cool... i'd rather listen to this than Leonard Cohen.. ANY DAY... lol, i know a lot of people would think i'm daft... but, anyway... there is also a sort of Christian/religious aspect to his writing... "There is a Kingdom" is exhibit A... "(Are You) The One I'm Waiting For"... is in that vein... this is deeply personal stuff... a man wrestling with himself and putting that out to the world... which, obviously, a lot of people would respond to... if you don't need a poppy hook... if you don't need toe tapping... if you don't care a bit about booty shaking... this guy is for you... "Green Eyes" is the closer... a really cool song... in conclusion... my assessment... is... is it an album you must hear before you die... maybe... if you are in the melancholy mood a lot... if you like wallowing in self introspection... a big yes... if you like witty, personal, and a bit profound lyrics... ok... but, if you want any hummable songs... toe tappers... goose bumps... or any groove at all... that's a big HELL NO... lol... i'll give it three stars... the three for the people who relate... and the other stars go unmarked... for the rest of us... lol... zzzzzzz
Well, I already knew the song "People ain't no good" because it's on the soundtrack of Shrek 2, but I've never heard the whole album before. Great voice. It's really an album that I think I won't give a second play, but now that I'm finishing it… I think I will.
I feel like it started out really strong then kind of petered out.
Very decent album. But songs are too samey. No stand out song
A bit too slow and ponderous all in all, but did really enjoy some of it (Into My Arms, Lime Tree Arbour and West Country Girl). I just think for a whole album it would be nice to have some more punchy numbers to break it up. Cave’s gutsy vocals can’t do that on their own and so it made a collection of mostly decent songs difficult to push through as an album.
not really floating my boat
I do know of Nick Cave. Not really a fan of this type of music. Going to check it out. Yeah not my type of music. Want to see what this second track sounds like.
I'm between a 3 and 4. Nick Cave is an artist I've never really got into, but this project has converted me on Tom Waits so maybe another listen or 2 is worth it. Initial thoughts are I like the lyrics and tender instrumental elements, it creates a nice melancholy vibe and he certainly has plenty to say. It would be nice for a bit of variety, as the arrangements are mostly quite stripped back Think I'll go 3 as I was getting bored towards the end. Black Hair, for example, is a bit of a dull track One to revisit though
Hard to decide between a 3 and a 4. I liked the music and instrumentation. I didn't like his voice or the lyrics.
I'm generally not in the mood for this sort of heavy depressing thing, but it's got some great material. If I were after something like that, this is great.
Heavy stuff. Like sinking into a cold bath that someone else cried in heavy. There’s beauty to the sparseness, but damn, it drags you down with it. Feels like sitting alone on a rainy Sunday. The piano keeps knocking on the same emotional door, and eventually you want to yell “we’re not home.” There’s charm in the detachment, a Leonard Cohen kind of sadness. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Into My Arms - People Ain't No Good - (Are You) the One That I've Been Looking For?
A pretty good, not great, album from a fairly disappointing human being.
Not my favorite Nick Cave. A little too maudlin and spiritual, even though it does have quite a few interesting things going on melodically. 3/5
Actually better than I remember it being. The piano is relentless, and gets a bit wearing after the halfway mark, but I liked more than I didn’t like. I reminds me a lot of Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Love and Hate, which isn’t a bad thing. Some of the lyrics are uncomfortable, and he sounds quite detached, but I like the melancholy and the sparse sound.
Compare to orpheous album I dont think this has the same impact for me. 2 slow, too stripped back. Too gentle. It leaves the raw cave lyrics to be the only course. I really like sides with my dinner and no amount of spectacular lyrics will win me over (There are so many on offer). I only just heard Nick cave (for the first time) and it makes me sad that this album doesnt bring me more of that surprise and enjoyment. Maybe its a grower not a shower. I listen to Nick alot now so hopefully this will penetrate me fully in time.
Can't deny the quality of the song writing but this album is just a bit too slow and plodding for me. It's more poetry recital than music album and I daresay Nick has given in to a bit of self indulgence (He is teetering on the edge of this at the best of times). It picked up towards the end of the album from 'West country girl' onwards and there were plenty of tracks that I would enjoy in isolation, but I can't see me relistening to the whole album.
Still enjoying his work, finding it pleasant enough to listen to, but not totally connecting for me sadly! But it's nice and slow and felt!
I mostly just wished I was listening to Tom Waits the whole time. I do enjoy him though!
he still hasnt fully connected but i enjoyed this!
Into My Arms: First track is nice. I like the piano. His voice is pretty relaxing too. A little repetitive though, gets old after a while 3/5 Lime Tree Arbour: Wow a little jazzy with those drums. It's pretty similar to the last song though. I hope it's not all this slow, I'm not too keen on this style. Still. 3/5, mainly because it has a crescendo in some places People Ain't No Good: Okay so i didn't notice it had moved on because it sounds REALLY similar to the last song... very repetitive and slow, had to skip. 2/5 Brompton Oratory: High hopes with the drums at the start. However, another slow song, not just drums and piano now though! Takes a while to get started but its alright. Not really something I'd choose to listen to but his voice sounds really nice so I'll give it a 3/5 There is a Kingdom: Why does the piano sound like stand by me. Anyway, sounds the same as the rest of the songs. I will give it to him, his voice is relaxing. But I wish the music was more exciting aaaa. 3/5 (Are you) the One That I've Been Waiting For?: wow starts with some guitar awesome. Still, not the most exciting piece ever... 2/5 Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere: wow an explicit song omg naughty anyway gosh this is slow again I can't be bothered to listen to the rest of this album I'm sorry nick it's so boring
Easy listening. He has a nice voice. Nice background music with a low key vibe
I've always had big respect for Nick Cave. He always seems to stay true to his craft and filters the horrors of life thru his writing- some so beautiful and tender he reminds me of Leonard Cohen. Not his best album but Into My Arms is wonderful
Is every Nick Cave album on this list??? 3.5/5
Interesting voice.
idk i think I need to come back to this one, but it's never grabbed me like his others
I think I have to accept that Nick Cave and I just don't see eye to eye. This one was in the upper tier of Cave material for me (the Birthday Party album is still the low point), and his tuning seemed to be a bit better here than in other outings. Some so far pretty good, but the last song was hard to listen to.
First song was really good and then the rest just sort of repeats
Meh
This was an album of grandiose love songs that I had an appreciation for. I honestly was down for it right up until the last songs which totally gave me the ick. It was definitely an album that would’ve stood out in the 90s when everyone else was about punk and rebellion.
Præcis det her jeg altid har frygtet når jeg har hørt navnet Nick Cave... Det er kedeligt... Jeg bliver slet ikke draget ind i et univers, eller får lysten til at lytte bedre efter.
Wasn't bad, but it didn't do much for me.
Decent smooth jazz/soft rock album. Not my favorite type of music but not bad. Enjoyable for one listen but probably won't come back any time soon.
I don't like ballad Nick Cave. I like post-punk Nick Cave. Gets a three for the lyrical content.
All the songs are quality written and recorded but halfway through I realized they’re all about the same.
Decidedly average
Hmmmm, not one of the Bad Seed's albums that I've spent a lot of time with previously. Re-listening, I can understand why. I don't mind a somber tone but I'd like it more if there was some contrast. I'm definitely missing the hellfire they normally bring. "I don't believe in an interventionist God" is an admittedly pretty baller opening line, though. Fave tracks - "Into My Arms", "People Ain't No Good"
I get it, this is how I'd be if I lost PJ Harvey too. Honestly, I don't remember liking this at all when I first heard it. Think I've always just preferred Nick Cave's darker, edgier goth rock side, especially the absurdity of an album like 'Murder Ballads'. But now I'm more mature and...yeah, I still prefer that edgy era, sorry. But I certainly got more out of this album than I previously did. Particularly, the first three tracks here are all incredible - especially the song 'People Ain't No Good'. But ultimately, to me, this is an album that's way too long for its own good. I can only handle so much of this brooding and sombre ballad-type music before it starts to get tiresome. There are these occasional production flares and switch-ups that keep things interesting - like the sharp violin of 'Where Do We Go Now By Nowhere' and the more upbeat country drive of the song 'West Country Girl'. Vocally, I wish Nick Cave was doing a bit more. I swear, melodically speaking, many songs use this same set of chords. But the lyrics are as crushing as I'd expect out of an album like this. Nick Cave's a talented songwriter at the end of the day, and I especially loved 'Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For?'. While I did enjoy this album when it started, it failed to keep me engaged throughout. I'd say anything past the very stale and repetitive 'Black Hair', I wasn't too hot on. Still a solid and much-needed mature switch-up for Nick Cave - a very important album for him.
3 stars
I remember really liking this when it came out, but now not really for me. It’s the music equivalent of those oscar-winning movies that people like because they are told they should. I feel like if you hit it on the right day in the right mood this is a 5 for someone, but today for me it’s a: 3⭐️
Moody. As expected.
As an album kinda dull the talk singing is not super engaging. Think I would maybe enjoy more as an individual song on a playlist
Mourning tunes
I quite enjoyed this although I did it 2 halves. Quite dreary in the end
boring and basic
Good album. Not at all like I expected. I thought the Henry's Dream and Ghosteen albums were awful but this was better. Still not sure why three Nick Cave are on the 1001 list. Hopefully, that's it.
Nothing bad about it, just a tad slow and boring. In the right mood though, I'd call it good piano driven indie rock. Kinda reminded me of if someone was playing a counting crows record but had they're thumb on the record, slightly slowing it down.
"I don't believe in an interventionist god". First lyrics on the album. Has anyone ever used "interventionist" in a song? But Nick somehow pulls it off so that it sounds smooth. I had never listened to Nick Cave, but right from the beginning, I loved "Into My Arms". The rest of the album is good too, but... still not enough to get over the 3.5 star hump. Sorry, Nick. I'm very glad I listened though. I feel that Nick is well known and respected enough that he arguably deserves at least one album on the list, so I'm glad this is here.
This album was kind of forgettable for me. I appreciate what he was going for and I do think this album had potential but it was just missing some oomf or something. I'm not really sure how to describe it.
I had a hard time with this one. I really want to love it, because "Into My Arms" is an incredible song, but then I kind of get fatigued with it. In a weird way, it reminds me a lot of Nick Drake where there is one banger on each record and then song after is good but never quite takes you to the same place. I really loved the songwriting. Its smart, witty and creative. The piano is so freaking good. I love how somber and moody it is, but I don't know if it needed to be an hour long.
Very dark voice, the music is calming. It was nice
Achingly beautiful at times, and very cheesy at others. “into my arms” and “west country girl” are my most favorite. “green eyes” is unnecessary (skippable/annoying). Nick Cave has a great voice and song writing ability, though this album feels a little uneven in quality (as a Nick Cave fan, I think I’d say this about all his albums-now that I listen more critically to them.) properly a 3.5 for me.
Nick Cave they could never make me like you. Maybe thats too harsh, its not terrible but its just squarely not for me. Good lyricist, bad singer, although he tickles the ivories well. His music always teeters on spooky or reminds me of an old youtube video someone makes using windows movie maker, and they use the slow fade out/fade in effect for every slide. Also way too low energy, oozes pretentious dickhead. I'm sure this is someones bag though!
All the people giving it 5’s probably fart just to enjoy the smell
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Probably my favourite of his work. Some decent song writing. But there's just not much to make me want to come back and listen again.
Sad and intimate.
Day396 - i like his voice and i like the songs but a little goes a long way
Nick Cave is a poet, I just don't resonate with his music.
I think the lyrics make me feel, but it's definitely not something I would choose to listen to, personally. I think they accomplished what they set out to accomplish.
Much prefer wild rocking maximalist Nick Cave to piano ballad Nick Cave. Even that birthday party album that’s one of the lowest rated on the site is more preferable to me than this. This wasn’t bad, just not my type of music
No le he prestado atención. Solo por el arranque ya se merece 3 estrellas y lo mismo si lo escuchase con cariño le daba más o quién sabe si menos. Estas reseñas al final son también fruto del momento.
Emotionally connecting attention seeking voice . A worthwhile listen but it does get repetitive and feels draggy at times
Very interesting, didn’t expect such sparse instrumentation but it was very well done
Hard to say it held my attention all the way through, but it's success lies in its melancholy, poetic songwriting, something I may have glossed over. It would also seem that the album hits harder had you already been familiar with the bands previous sound, seeing as this piano-based album was a departure from prior albums. Nevertheless, this was my first introduction to the band and they are now on my radar.
This is the whateverth album of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds that I've listened to. Now, I can appreciate their variety, but there's something about Nick Cave that usually misses the mark. Yes, the music can be quite beautiful, but it doesn't grab your attention. Other artists do great with this style of music--Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen come to mind immediately--but their music and lyrics are engaging and thought provoking. The Boatman's Call is trying to be tender and soft, but it lacks the depth required to impact someone's emotions. All in all, not the worst listen, but disappointing when you love other artists that do this style justice. 2.5 on the high side.
There’s some good stuff here
😴
leonard cohen for a new generation. this is probably great stuff if you're really into the dark and brooding melodrama of singer-songwriters. i'm not one of those people but i thought the album was enjoyable for the first couple tracks. after that, it was all very slow and felt the same from track to track. favorites: into my arms, lime tree arbour, people ain't no good
He's either drunk or depressed. Maybe both?
Pretty great! Would need to be in just the right mood for this, but by luck I was when it came up.
Not bad, not great. Right down the middle.
liked it, really listenable, wouldn't rush back to this exact album but defo keen to check out more
I understand his genius but I did find this album a bit dull. It is haunting and beautiful and there are a few key songs that I enjoy and listen to. It suits a particular mood but won't make it on to my regular rotation.
I love the poetry but this one had less punch than the other Nick Cave albums I've gotten so far
Nick Cave, babe, please, we're begging you to get a vocal coach. Please
3/5. I do see the appeal of nick cave now, which I think got overshadowed by the loud post punk of his other albums. Akin to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, dark and serious lyrics while still have a hint of pessimism and yet optimistic at the same time. These are dark times but we'll make it through. I would say it could be better since it does get kind of similar sounding as the album progresses. It started at a 4 but now it's a 3 which is unfortunate because I had high hopes. Oh well, maybe next time Cave. Best Song: Into My Arms, Are You The One I've Been Waiting For?, There Is A Kingdom
I'm just not in a frame of mind where I can concentrate on this. Zero interest in a nice quiet album where I need to focus on the lyrics. Someday in the future I'll bet this is going to be a great album that I'm thrilled to discover.
Well, I was a certain I wasn’t gonna like this album, but I was wrong. Parts of it gave me Morphine vibes solid album it I may never listen to it or Nick Cave again. We will see.
Slow and dark. Cosy and reassuring. Soulful music that resonates with me a lot. I like this album more than I thought I would when I started the first song. Great album over all even if it doesn't fit every time and place to listen to it.
A bit moody but I should expect that from Nick Cave. Decent. Some good songs on here. Don't think I'd listen to it all the time but it is a good listen when I'm having a bad day.
It was fine. I like post-punk Nick Cave so I don't think I'm the target audience for an all ballad effort from him. But it was fine. I really like his singing voice and his raunchy melancholia that his albums have, boring as most of the songs in this one are.
Production stands out. Flood is brill; wish he produced Leonard Cohen's songs.
Extremely appropriate and level-headed reaction to getting dumped by PJ Harvey. I'd do the same. Probably the weakest Nick Cave album I've heard - still a 3/5. Has the song from Shrek 2.
The most boring Nick Cave album I’ve heard yet. I miss when he was killing people.
Into my arms is one of my favourite Nick Cave songs. Some great lyrics, but overall, the album is a bit pedestrian for me.
Lovely
Sounds like this band had 1 musical idea that was played out across almost every song on the album. Not a bad idea. Just one idea.
muy chill mood
Not an album to listen to if you’re already depressed. Darkly pretty in some moments, but a little hard to get through otherwise.
I found it hard to stay focused on the album. The songs all have a similar sound and the vocal aren’t jumping out at you. That being said the songs I listened closely to were nice but I don’t necessarily need to hear it again. 6/10
Dork really enjoyed this. Goof preferred Nick Cave's other work.
A wonderful Sunday morning with coffee album.
It was going well until Green Eyes. Glad I was listening to that on my own...
Put me to sleep.
Love Nick Cave but this isn’t my fave 3.5
A great juxtaposition of romance and sorrow. Cave's deep and gravelly voice really helps steer the ship straight as it flows from side to side.
Nice enough songs, just not my speed. Prefer his earlier, punk-ier music, this gospel-y stuff is…eh.
Well, that was a whole lot of moping about. This was definitely trying to be artsy, maybe for the sake of being artsy. I can't tell if there was sincerity behind it. Liked it well enough, though
I mean this in the most respectful way. My initial reaction was, it's like a Tom Waits impersonator with a smooth baritone voice.
Fairly run of the mill. Into My Arms is a good tune and have heard it before. Nothing else really stood out. Simpsons: No
It was okay. If it was fifteen or twenty minutes shorter, it might end up in my rotation but the theme and vibe didn't really change for almost an hour.
-from everything ive heard about nick cave and the bad seeds I was not expecting this to be so… peaceful? comforting? sort of? the piano was very nice. it definitely felt a little drawn out but it was great to listen to on a walk through town at night -Favorites are People Ain’t No Good and West Country Girl
Much better than Murder Ballads
Gentle, kinda mysterious instrumentation with his low, gravelly lyrics
70% Fav: There Is a Kingdom, (Are You) the One...?, West Country Girl, Idiot Prayer, Far from Me Must-Hear? Depends on your mood. Want to relax or be romantic? Yes. If not? Go ahead and skip it.
This was ok. Sounded like a Leonard Cohen album, but his voice isn’t as good.
3.2 1x catchup 10/11
This guy is moody af. Musically it’s a beautiful album, Nick makes it weird though.
If I’m being honest this was sort of a downer.
Nick Cave, as always, has created and released something hauntingly beautiful. In this project, it’s more beautiful than haunting, though. I enjoyed it, but the writing isn’t quite as good as his some of his other albums. In addition, the whole thing does drone on a bit without any grand instrumentation or anything else to break up the songs. I did enjoy it, though. Not sure if I’ll ever listen to the whole thing again, but surely I’ll put on a song or two from it. It’s good. 3/5
Actually really enjoyed this album. Never really like any Nick Cave before
Nick has always been one of those great songwriters who shouldn't sing their own songs. Not ever.
Into my arms on erikoinen aloitus ja niin hyvä biisi, että innostun tätä kuunnellessa aluksi tosi paljon. Mutta sitten pitäisi jaksaa kuunnella sanoituksia tosi tarkasti. Onneks välillä haitari herättää. Tunnelma pysyy loppuun asti vähän liiankin tasaisesti silti. Heikko kolmonen.
blessed to hear nick cave this day
quite gooid i like 3/5
Would normally prefer more upbeat music with more going on. This was still good tho
the album is dense, even after 2 full listens i still don’t really understand everything that’s going on here. it’s not my favorite nick cave album but i can see why it’s revered so heavily even if there’s some awful production choices. maybe i’ll enjoy this more once it clicks
Nick Cave is one of those artists I thought I would enjoy more or at least like, but I find his music a difficult listen, often depressing and annoyingly strange. With several Nick Cave-affiliated records previously on the list, The Boatman's Call is a more piano-based, mellow album with Cave's vocals reminding me of a non-French Canadian, Leonard Cohen or at least his delivery and talky-sing style. I must admit, I don't mind this record, I had no problem getting through the songs and kind of enjoyed the overall sound. I still don't know if I like him enough to listen to more than what's on the list, if this is considered his most essential works.
All a bit samey
As I’ve said before, I’m definitely not a staunch Cave man. But I have to hand it to him here for one of the greatest opening lines to a song, or, indeed, an album : “ I don’t believe in an interventionist God”. Hear, hear. Into My Arms is a fantastic song. And Brompton Oratory is not far behind it - beautiful lyrics. In fact, after 3 or 4 listens, I’m warming to the album as a unit. It’s all a bit down-tempo, but it works well.
I would give this another listen.
Man, does this guy ever have any fun?!?! He's such a downer all the time. He's a great songwriter, but everything is just so dreary. I don't know why he even bothers with names for his albums when they should all be called Depression Vol. 1, Vol. 2, etc. People Ain't No Good is a great track though. I liked it a lot. Once in a while you do need brooding and cathartic music, but a whole album of it is too much. Give me something uptempo once in a while, will ya? I hope this is the last of Nick Cave, he’s another artist who has been way over represented on this list. Especially since his schtick is the same every time. Sad boi cry music, oh I’m so dark and despairing. Bro, you need some fucking Prozac.
Gentle American music. Good for sleeping on as it has a lullaby effect. Not my cup of tea. Not bad just abit boring
Has some fine moments
Melodically very pleasant. Liked West Country Girl and Far From Me but not my genre overall.
Nothing too special I don't think. But not boring either. Nice one to start the day. 3/5
This starts real strong but it fell off for me over time. None of it bad, I'd say. But whatever pulled me in that top didn't hold on.
Wasn't really in the mood for this sub-Cormac McCarthy hokum. Maybe in another state of mind its charms will reveal themselves to me - but not today. 'Green Eyes' was a very long three and a half minutes.
I can't find anything to connect with on these Nick Cave albums. I saw an art installation of his in a gallery and liked it a lot, more than any of his albums I've heard here. Glad I'm done with all 4 of them on this list. Into My Arms is a beautiful song, so this is the best of the 4 albums as it has Into My Arms. I've already forgotten the rest of the album.
This is good, but it didn't make for an uplifting commute home. I've liked a couple of the previous Nick Cave records I've gotten so far, but this one was the hardest of them to listen to so far.
Can’t quite figure this out. I want to like it but I don’t hate it. Just not sure anymore what the requirements are for this list. Why is this considered one of the albums that I should listen to before I die. If you tell me this cutting edge or classic I would call bullshit. If someone asked me if I had ever listened to Nick Cave I can now say yes but don’t ask me details because it truly was forgettable
I got bored. I understand why the people who like Nick Cave like Nick Cave, but to me he feels a little too "brooding college coffee shop" to me.
Nick Cave is one of those artists that I've always tried to like...and failed to. Years later I still don't get what the hype's about, especially considering the fact that there are many different modern artists with a similar style who are way more interesting musically. The thing about stripped-back piano ballads for me is that they need that little something to grip me—be it the vocal delivery, interesting lyricism or a catchy melody—while this album had virtually none of that. It's all so broody, depressing, monotonous and repetetive... It's not that I think it's a bad album—it's okay, I listened through twice—but his music might just not be for me. I can't believe I'm saying this but if I was in the mood for some piano ballads I'd put on my Adele's vinyl over this, 'cause at least her vocal delivery never disappoints. This guy's voice makes me want to simultaneously fall into a deep slumber and jump out the window.
Kind of a 3.5 for me. Dilemma!
This one was quite a change of pace from the others on the list. Much slower honestly better
Both this record and I started out strong, but by the end of it, I was tired, and the tunes seemed monotonous and overlong.
I do like Nick Cave. These last two albums of his, though, were a bit of a chore to get through. I still like him, but I just want his albums to have more variety. Also, I tend to like my Nick Cave with more bite. Individually, these melancholic songs were all cool. Taken together though, they were a bit much. Give me Murder Ballads or that double album we heard that had that Harry potter song on it. Those were my kinda Nick Cave albums. unsure how to rate this one. as an album, it's a 2, but like i said i thought the songs themselves were all right. let's go with a 3
I guess maybe you need to be in the mood to listen to his music? I should set my alarm to this and maybe it will grow on me. More Nick Cave albums than I would have though.
An easily approachable and mellow Nick Cave album. The songs are pretty quiet and somber, and other than Green Eyes, nothing too unusual. After listening to it a handful of times, it is just fine, without much that i really attach to or connect with.
Deep melancholic lyrics made me feel reflective? Interesting lead vocalist too
Similar to Murder Ballads, but slightly more cheerful. At times.
Maybe it's just me, but Nick Cave is kind of hard to listen to? This album is different sounding than the last Cave album we were given. He doesn't have a good voice, and he just kind of talks at you. This album was 10 very similar sounding piano songs with him talking over them in the same way on each one. Despite this, I see people remarking online that this album is amazing, so maybe it's just me who doesn't get it? Not a single song stood out to me. I was bored the entire time. Didn't actively dislike it, but what is there to love about this? 5/10
This is a great example of separating the quality of the album versus how much I enjoy listening to it. This is my second Nick Cave album, and I can see he is a good songwriter and they are able to accomplish what they want with a track, so I give them props for being a good band. I don’t enjoy listening to most of these tracks, but they’re certainly not garbage.
Classic nick cave openings ong fire
man, "Black Hair" really killed the vibes. first half was really strong, ended kinda weak tho.
Wow, I initially hated this but something clicked part way through, need to listen a few more times. 3.08
Songs weren't bad, but all of them felt very samey after a while
Ok. 3.
This was alright. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are a little hit or miss for me most of the time. My favorite songs were “Into My Arms,” “People Ain’t No Good,” and “Far From Me.” Overall I didn’t love it, but also didn’t hate it. Pretty average.
Жанр мужик говорит под музыку намного интереснее раскрыт у Боуи Но в целом отдельные треки получились хорошо и можно погрустить под них Алкоальбом: бутылка рома
good love songs
good voice but kinda boring, first track was great though
I liked the performances but the mood was a lot. Better than a 2 but not a 4.
I love Nick Cave but there are other albums I like more.
Pretty decent. Sounds like Fiona Apple and a baptist preacher having dinner at a seafood restaurant and cocktail lounge in 1996.
Muess zuegeh, au wenn people aint no good en spezielle platz ih mim herz hett isches chli es lahms album? Aso sicher ned mis lieblings nick cave album
A Marmite album: obviously a very talented singer-songwriter, but this is such a depressing album - Leonard Cohen for the 1990's, so it has to be a no from me. I had to check that Spotify hadn't started playing Lou Reed when "There Is a Kingdom" started because I thought that I was listening to "Perfect Day".
Decent easy listening. Not a great overall album though. Got a little repetitive and wanted it to be over sooner
7/10
It was fine, I did not like that last song though
March 5, 2024 HL: “Into My Arms”, “There is a Kingdom”, “West Country Girl”, “The One I’m Waiting For” Hm, Murder Ballads was musically intriguing but also gross n’ gruesome. Boatman is often sweet, but its purposefully slow and sombre nature made me long for the variety of the former album, or at least the riot of “Curse of Millhaven”. Can’t believe he made the song from Shrek 2 real though. Wild Apart from The Boatman’s Call, Nick Cave has 2 five-stars and 2 three-stars from me- plus 2 Cave-adjacent ones (Punishing Kiss, Oedipus Schmoedipus) that weren’t the greatest but I gave 3 stars for their uniqueness.
Pretty similar throughout. Good voice and melodies. Standout songs: Into my arms People aint no good Black hair
Pretty cool. Very good voice.
Sommige nummers mooi, sommige beetje saai, maar mooie stem
ein paar gute songs, aber es existieren bessere nick cave alben da draußen
Kind of like a new generation Dylan, I thought all of his songs sounded the same
# Playlist track - Into My Arms # Notes - Great opening act with "I don't believe in an interventionist god" - The album then proceeds with more or less the same tone throughout, and tracks kind of blend together. - Good, but not great. 3 stars.
It gets as close as one can get to singing in a monotone. I almost took out the digital tuner just to see if he actually hits more than three notes in the entire album. I thought maybe I was missing some lyrical brilliance but then I started reading the lyrics and nope. I don't see the appeal. Sad Boomer music. There are many better sad options out there. And, wow, I really, really hate Green Eyes. That's a bunch of nonsense with a pompus voice over. Good grief. Wth was that? Ugh.
Nice, but a bit slow for my liking. Proper posh hotel bar music.
Tom Waits vibe. Very low key but enjoyable enough.
I wonder if this album would be as highly regarded if it had been their first. It seems like it’s appreciated more for its departure from their typical style than for how it stands on its own. The lyrics are more notable than the music. Overall, I find it ordinary. 2.8
What does it say when the two Nick Cave albums on this list are both considered "departures" from his normal work? The accompaniment is good, but I get the same feeling from this as I did the Leonard Cohen album -- okay but a bit unfulfilling. (WTF with the Casio beat on that song?!) 3.3
I like the backing organs on Lime Tree Arbour. I feel like People Ain't No Good would resonate a lot with my dad. Growing up I heard the phrase all the time as part of his refrain coming home from work in the service industry. Brompton Oratory is a really pretty to me. Deadpan vocals, but really luscious instrumental backing with organs and a drum machine. High point so far for me. There is a Kingdom is a straightforward Christian rock song. Instrumentals are fine with really nice production, but I have a hard time getting down with the hokieness inherent in scripture hymns of this variety. Accordion drone pairs wonderfully with his depressed monotone delivery on Black Hair. I've listened to Nick Cave albums before, and I come away from this one in a similar place. I enjoy the atmosphere and find the instrumentals to be really pretty, but I don't find myself really wanting to come back for more. This album had some real high points (Brompton Oratory) but also merged into gospel territory that I didn't love (There is a Kingdom). Overall its a solid enough album, but not something I plan to listen to again soon. 3 / 5
Great voice and I definitely like some of these songs but it's tough to get through a 52 mins of what sounds very similar. I probably liked the intro song Into My Arms the best.
Good, but definitely a slow and heavy album. Not exactly what I'm looking for on a Friday. No doubt Nick Cave has a wonderful, clear voice with strong lyrics. Not quite as good as I remember the last Nick Cave album, but still enjoyable for what it is.
Nick Cave has such a calming voice, but I'm a fan of some melancholy shit and this is just a biiiiiit too much for me. Some real beautiful stuff in here though. Green Eyes is weird and took a double take when he said "cunt." Pretty middling 3 for me and liked the last album we listened to by him more.
I like some of it but not all of it. Seems to be hit or miss.
The bad seeds are not that bad after all. I would say they are easy going seeds.
I recently stopped drinking coffee, and this album sounds like I currently feel. I'm not quite sure if that's a good thing or bad thing...
I challenge Nick Cave to sing “Walkin’ On Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. When the first line of the album is “I don’t believe in an Interventionist God”… well. That’s pretty damn heavy, isn’t it? Buckle up, folks. This ride is going to be pretty dark. I will say I liked this album a bit more than the last Cave album. But… MAN. Lighten… up? Top songs: “There Is A Kingdom,” “Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?”
Some songs on this album really struck a chord. Into My Arms and People Ain't No Good are both beautiful, sombre pieces with incredibly thoughtful lyrics. The former is more touching and uplifting if you pay close attention. Far From Me was also struck a nerve in a good way. Cave really is a great lyricist - all the songs are very well-written. But he also has limited vocals and while on one hand stripped down instrumentation should work with that voice, it also puts it front and center when sometimes it feels like it needs to be hidden. Some of the songs just didn't have the right feel - There is a Kingdom is a great example. I love the lyrics, Cave's voice is ok, but the melody is a bit off. Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere? and Green Eyes had more appealing simple melodies but paired with Cave's blunt language (often found on other albums) I found it a bit odd. For as much as this is a departure from the usual style of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and there is something to be said for uniqueness, it wasn't consistently my cup of tea.
Great album with some amazing songs, but also some that drag
3/5
Not bad, but not great.
Very very nice. I like the slow paced vibe of this album 3.9
Vangitsi kuuntelemaan ja erittäin tunnelmallinen. Tämän levyn perusteella on helppo ymmärtää miehen hypeä.
Not a bad bunch of drunk pub singer songs. Probably worth another listen if I get the chance…
meh
"The Boatman's Call" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, released in 1997, is a departure from their earlier, darker sound. The album is characterized by slow tempos and introspective lyrics, showcasing Cave's more restrained and contemplative side. While some listeners appreciate the raw vulnerability in tracks like "Into My Arms" and "People Ain't No Good," others might find the overall tone slow and, in some moments, potentially boring. It's an album that requires a specific mood and appreciation for somber, reflective music. While not universally captivating, "The Boatman's Call" earns a subjective 3/5 for its intimate and melancholic storytelling.
De jolies chansons, une voix profonde, de belles mélodies de piano. Après il faut être dans un mood spécifique pour bien apprécier cet album.
Better than some of the other NC albums on this list
Good album with some great cuts but I prefer violent Cave
Favorite Track: Lime Tree Arbour This album has a very 'jazzy' feel to it. About 75-80% of the tracks on this album I found to have really relaxing melodies. Apparently, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are known for having each album sound entirely different from their previous ones. I rate this album a 3.0/5.0. I enjoyed it for what it was, and I appreciate the unique vibes it gives off to the listener.
Some good moments
Kinda slow and very mid. 3/5
The issue I had with other Nick Cave albums is that they were too long. I enjoyed them don’t get me wrong but I like my Nick Cave in bitesize chunks. That’s where this album comes in.
There were a few songs I liked, but there was far too much droning on for me to really enjoy this album all the way through. I get that it is supposed to feel poignant and earnest in its feelings, and on the songs I liked, I really felt this. But more often than not, I was looking for how much time was left on the track. Will not be picking this up on vinyl.
Best of nick cave so far but I am really getting tired of all these nick cave albums. Had him more than any other artist and I just don’t think that makes sense
Not what I expected having looked them up just before starting my listen. There is no denying that Nick Cave has a good voice as that is primarily what is on show in this album, with a lot of accompanying piano. It’s a very chilled album till you get to West Country Girl which ups the tempo slightly, and I have to say this was my preferred track on this album. Again, not really one that’s to my taste but a better listen than the previous day.
Well that wasn't what I expected. I was well aware of this Nick and the Seeds, but for some reason had always thought of them as being like Alex Harvey. It's not, it's really rather pleasant. But does tend to drag on, and over the course of the whole album becomes a little maudlin. But nevertheless I think I'll give it a 3
What a journey NC has had over the years, I'm amazed he hasn't done himself in especially with his doom laden tendency to write about the darker side of life. Dipped in and out of his career over the decades and this one passed me by. Nice to finally have a listen, it does seem to be a break away from their noise driven earlier material. So his muse was the break up with PJ Harvey? Not surprised its sad and anguished as it is, some beautiful arrangements and melodies on these piano led songs. Sometimes you have to be in the right mood for NC and luckily for him I was in a chilled out mood. So he gets a high 3 for this effort.
This album was quiet and deliberate. Not my favorite sound but it was enjoyable enough.
Nick Cave’s stuff is cool and kinda dark but better in measured doses.
Noticeably more quiet and subdued than his previous efforts However, some songs blend together too much to the point that they almost become forgettable Favourite tracks: Into My Arms, Lime Tree Arbour, People Ain’t No Good, (Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For
It's fine, I think maybe I just don't like Nick Cave as much as the author of this book.
I LOVE Nick Cave but this album is (compared to the rest of his work after 1990) kinda weak? not that I not like it but it's a bit repetitive... Still I love Into My Arms or There is a Kingdom
This is a nice album overall. Favourite tracks: Into My Arms, Where Do We Got Now But Nowhere? Sweet lyrics on Green Eyes too: "This useless old fucker with his twinkling cunt". Wonderful stuff.
Not my fav Nick Cave but he sure is something
For the most part, this is one of Cave’s strongest albums. A far more tender offering than this work preceding this, with some of his most beautiful and impactful songs (Into My Arms in particular). This would have easily been a 4 or a 5, but unfortunately it’s mired by two absolute stinkers. The cringy Black Hair derails the album though it nearly holds its own afterwards, but the closer Green Eyes (with possibly Cave’s worst lyrics and vocal performance combined in one agonising song) ends an otherwise strong record on a real sour note
People ain't no good was a strong highlight. I'll be listening to that for a while I reckon, very good song! Overall, this was a thoroughly decent album. I prefer the more jaded/dark side to Nick Cave I saw in 'Murder Ballads', so I'm giving this 3 stars.
The next time I have a deep longing to be horribly depressed, I will just put this on repeat. Dude's got a good voice, but Lord is it all one level in that level is low.
Lekker begin, maar erg lastig om volledig doorheen te komen
This was my second Nick Cave album on this list, and I thought it was pretty good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed Ghosteen. The minimal instrumentation worked pretty well to go along with the more straightforward lyrics. The songs were pleasant, and I like Nick Cave's voice. The biggest factor that makes this a middle-of-the-road album for me is that nothing here really stood out. "Into My Arms" was my favorite track, but nothing else after it really came close to being as good.
This album isn't bad. Standouts include Into My Arms, West Country Girl, and Idiot Prayer.
Maybe would have been higher without the last song but overall it's ok but not more than that
"Into My Arms" and "People Ain't No Good" have been longtime favourites of mine which gave me high hopes for the full album which I had never listened to. Unfortunately it failed to grab me like those two songs for the rest of the album and it became a bit on the boring side.
"I don't believe in an interventionist god" is one of the great opening lines in modern music, and I love so much of Nick Cave's work...so why did this leave me somewhat cold? This came after a really strong, varied album, and it was just a little monotonous. 'Into My Arms' is a gorgeous ballad, but songs like People Ain't No Good or West Country Girl just felt empty. The melodies and piano are uneventful, and some lyrics just feel like they've been taken from a diary entry unedited. What might seem to some like heart-rending honesty just felt a little teenage. I was waiting for a 'Mercy Seat' or 'Henry Lee' or 'Red right hand' - stories with dark, intelligent lyrics and intriguing jnstrumentation, but apart from a few nice violin parts from Warren Ellis, little stuck with me. Maybe will reward repeated listens?
Blah blah blah
3.5 stars. Honestly this is a great record, but it's all the reasons I don't listen to more Nick Cave. I really only need small doses infrequently, despite generally enjoying it.
This is the best Nick Cave album on the list so far, by a margin. Some genuinely beautiful melodies but the odd lyric had me worried that this was almost a Christian album.
Very emotional album, requires the right state of mind also for the listener
Tiene algunas canciones, pero se me hace monótono.
I liked The Boatman's Call more than most Nick Cave stuff; it's dark and deep and brooding and reflective in mostly good ways. 3.
I think this is the 2nd or 3rd Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album that I've gotten. While I enjoy the theme song to "Peaky Blinders", overall I am a bit disappointed in what I've heard of their other music thus far. It's merely ok, a little soft and slow for my tastes.
un peu too slow a un certain point. mais reste un bon album 6.5/10
Overall I thought it was decent but an hours worth of sad songs really gets too much by the end. Also ending on Green Eyes leaves a sour taste. Having two singers staggered over one another was an awful idea. I would listen to certain songs again but have no interest in revisiting this album. Highlights: Into My Arms People Ain't No Good
A bit boring
Top 3 Songs: 1 - (Are You) the One That I've Been Waiting For (6) 2 - West Country Girl (8) 3 - Into My Arms (1)
I think Mr. Cave and his Bad Seeds are tough to fully become invested in. I've always been pretty picky-choosy when it comes to their ridiculous discography. I tremendously respect the songwriting and unique aspects that really set this band apart, but they're certainly not the most accessible group of all time. The boatman's call is a mood album. This isn't one you can easily pop on any time and get into it. But if you DO invest the attention it requires, it will be well worth it.
Well this was different, but not bad. Not exciting but some well written songs in there. Very interesting album. Might listen again to pay more attention to the lyrics.
Wasn't feeling it at first. Too ballady. But then it started to grow on me. Especially some of the darker numbers.
Beetje saai… ben weer terug!!
Ce n'était pas mon préféré de lui, mais ce n'est pas le moins bon non plus. J'aimais l'ambiance généralement très "singer/songwriter", moins rock. Mais à la longue je trouvais le style un peu unidimensionnel. 6/10
People are bad and black hair were terrible songs. This almost felt like a Bob Dylan parody album. I liked most of the other songs despite their slow pace. Score: 60 Art: 50
술 담배를 좋아한 노라존스 같다 people aint no good 추천
Into my arms is such a beautiful song. The rest was ok, but not sure I would choose to listen to it unless I felt the need to wallow in despair. Happily for me, I no longer feel like doing that, and I hope I never do again - but if I do, I need to remember that this album exists. 3 stars, would have been 2 but for Into My Arms.
1.) Into My Arms: 7.9/10 Very nice intro track. Sweet love song. Already like the sparseness of it 2.) Lime Tree Arbour: 7.2/10 Like the outro 3.) People Ain’t No Good: 7.4/10 I can already see the early Tom Waits influence on this entire intro. Nice vibraphones. Always like a good vibraphone arrangement. Sounds like a funeral wake almost. 4.) Brompton Oratory: 7.6/10 Already like the toy sounding drum machine. Nice organ 5.) There Is A Kingdom: 5/10 Nice nylon string. Kinda got the vibe from the beginning that I wasn’t gonna like this one that much. Nothing really proving that wrong. Whole album is kinda one note so far but that’s not necessarily bad thing. It’s a good note and a good sound; it just kinda lacks variety I guess. 6.) (Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For?: 7.1/10 I can really hear the early Tom Waits influence in his voice now. This one sounds darker. More sinister. I like it. Might just be the darker key. Nice Hi-Hat sound 7.) Where Do We Go Now but Nowhere: 5/10 The sound is starting to wear on me a little. Still a good sound but you can only do it for so many songs before it starts to get old. 8.) West Country Girl: 6.8/10 Instantly different vibe and sound so I’m all for it. Like the steel sounds of the strings. Sounds real and genuine. 9.) Black Hair: 7.1/10 Nice harmonium(?) 10.) Idiot Prayer: 6.6/10 The title reminds me of The Idiot Sun by Leviathan so there’s that. Kinda groovy ngl 11.) Far From Me: 6/10 Nice atmosphere so far 12.) Green Eyes: 8.5/10 This one is interesting so far. I could tell it was different from the start. Like the spoken word vocals over the sung vocals. This one sounds sadder ngl. Lyricism is pretty good. Feels very raw.
Another set of typically uplifting songs about love, loss, and religion from Old Nick. Of course, by uplifting, what I really mean is depressing.
Moving record. Slow. Moody. + People Ain't No Good (because of Shrek) + There Is A Kingdom + Idiot Prayer + Far From Me What was that with Green Eyes at the end, I'm crying
Good
A nice storyteller album. Great listen
6/10
I think this one is a little too tame for me. I appreciate the instrumentation and the songwriting, but it does tend to lose my attention after a while. I like the tracks that have more of a dark bluesy vibe to them, the imagery used throughout the album is good but it's especially good in those songs. I much preferred the second half of the album to the first, though this won't be a common pull from the library for me. Fave tracks: Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere, West Country Girl, Far From Me
This is an interesting album, very melancholy and intimate. I really enjoy the vibe built up in these tracks and Nick Cave's deep voice adds to the ambience. I find there is a bit of variance in quality with the lyricism, sometimes it is deep with rich imagery, and other times repetitive and slightly cringey. Either way still an enjoyable listen. Fav Tracks: People Ain't No Good, Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere, Idiot Prayer
Very touching (maybe even a little bit depressing, but nonetheless great) album. Nick Cave delivers.
Would be 2 but into my arms
Oh boo hoo
Wonderful album by Nick Cave, does not have the post-punk sound of his other records. Recorded on piano, Cave's beautiful lyrics and deep voice bring a certain melancholy to all the tracks.
Not terrible. A little “Leonard Coheny”
More of a 3.5 as there’s some solid tracks on here.
Just ok
Gospel for depressed people.
I don't know what to think of this album, honestly. It starts slowly, the first 3 songs are musically boring. After that, it becomes more engaging and the melancholic and sad mood makes its way through us. But I can't find more than a mood in this album, and maybe that's okay? Who knows. I don't.
A classic bad seeds album but I feel it misses some of the more cinematic elements of the more recent Nick Cave records. Definitely some great moments and probably a grower with more to find on each listen
Channeling Cohen, some somber love songs to start. West country girl takes things a bit heavier traditional nick cave style. Highlights: into my arms.
3.5 Great sounds
Good
никкейвно :)))
Some songs were fine but I didn’t like the lyrics. I genuinely thought this was a Christian rock album at first.
Some albums are impactful and some albums just sound like they want you to feel intelligent, so this is not my favorite Nick Cave. 3/5.
Shrek
Into my arms - certified anthem. Far from me also a highlight. Very pretty and chill album. Not always the most distinguishable songs but still very good! Very luscious instrumentation, great voice as well
sounds alright, it's very calming. It's mostly acoustic and I like heavy stuff tho so its not for me.
Kinda just Tom Waits again but a little more listenable. He has a pretty interesting voice which he occasionally did cool stuff with. I guess I could see myself putting this album on while winding down for bed but I found myself more bored with this more than anything. I kept trying to figure out where I knew 'People Ain't No Good' from and I'm still in disbelief that it's Shrek 2. What an influential movie, damn. 3
Good album, nice easy listening. Just a shame he can't really sing!
The music is relatively simplistic and can be a bit repetitive, but that works well to highlight some of the truly beautiful work with the lyrics. It's not a record that I am likely just to sit down and listen to unless I'm having one of those melancholy days where I just need to be all up in my feelings, but overall it's a good album. The one exception to it being good is the track "Black Hair" which sounds like someone smoked about a pound of weed and grabbed an open mic with nothing prepared and just happened to see a woman with black hair in the audience. Oh, and with an accordion.
cool
An album with a lot of emotion and great sound. I ended up getting quite bored of it by the end, only due to the slow pace of the whole album. It’s definitely something you’d have to be in a certain kind of mindset to listen to.
Slower than I thought. Not bad.
The Boatman's Call is a solid album that showcases Cave's songwriting and vocal skills. While it may not be as accessible or upbeat as some of his other work, it is a powerful and poignant exploration of love and loss that fans of his music will appreciate.
Enjoyable, spiritual lyrics with only piano during the whole álbum.
sounds very much like The National was inspired by this album
Into your arms is not just the best song, it's the blueprint for all the other songs. I love it, but grew tired of the relentless low mood/tempo - I couldn't listen to the whole album in one go and had to put on some Blink182 to get some balance!
good!
Love some songs, quite slow though
I've only recently discovered Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds upon the recommendation of a friend. The album he recommended was Murder Ballads. That album is very different than this album. This album is a departure from their typical post punk/rock sound for a more intimate, almost entirely piano based style. Many people write off Nick Cave because of his baritone voice and unique lyric delivery. I find that with the slow piano accompaniment on this album it melds quite well. I immediately recognized People Ain't No Good from the movie Shrek 2. This album had themes of romance, religion, and heartbreak. "Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?" was a heart wrenching song about love and mental illness. Overall, I enjoyed this album. Not something I would often gravitate to because it is very heavy. Favourite songs: People Ain't No Good, Into My Arms, Lime Tree Arbour, Brompton Oratory Least favourite song: Black Hair (do ya think she had black hair?) 3/5
