Reviews (page 6 of 7)
If “I’m not like the other girls” was an album. Bjork and Fiona Apple and Imogen Heap are weird but it’s an honest weird. They write about weird things. This girl only writes about wanting to bone. TWO STARS
Interesting but not for me
This feels harsh, and I suspect with more listens this would definitely increase. The song writing and production were really unique and fascinating BUT it didn't really hook me.
I'm honestly not sure what to say about this. Good voice but strangely combined with beats that didn't compliment the voice or words. At least that's my two cents.
It sounds like the future…but I don’t think I like it. For me, it lacks a distinct sense of personality, kind of like Bjork and Arianna Grande were doing the ever-playing background music for a Meow Wolf. My favorite part on it was the song Closer because of the Classical/ Gregorian style singing, which doesn’t exactly play into the whole ‘future’ thing. Her voice can be angelic but the head-voice falsetto and stagger-singing gets old, and unfortunately constitutes most of the album. There is something here. She has talent. I would be curious to hear future albums, but on the same way you want to see the aftermath of a tornado: expecting devastation but hopeful.
Feel like I missed something here, with more glowing reviews than I would have expected.. I really didn’t enjoy this much. Was quite boring and faded to the background almost instantly
A bit too spooky and ethereal for me. It sort of put me on edge, which is possibly a product of me being in a bad mood while I was listening. I can see the craft but it didn’t grab me.
She has a good voice, there is just too much going on in the background for me to really settle in and enjoy it.
Two Weeks is a tune, the rest a pile of pretentious, try hard shite
There is one, maybe 2 good songs on here
I missed this one but some day in the future I'll listen.
It’s alright!
The album cover is doll-like and creepy.
I’ve heard eusexua before but not this one, IDM eusexua but this is a jit boring 2/5
Perfect album to have sex to. Bad album to sit down and listen to. With artists and genres like this, I think that's kind of the point. Which pisses me off. But it works. Fave songs: - Hours - Pendulum - Numbers - Kicks
This was a strange one, like psychedelic rock tends to be. Definitely not sure how I feel about it.
"LP1" is interesting because it was pretty ahead of its time with its hypnotic, rhythmic, avant- pop sound. For experimental music, it's great. However, tracks began to bleed into one another, and I was ready for it to end.
i tried to like it, but there's some ingredient missing. 2
FKA Twigs definitely got a lot better with time, I really don't see what all the hype is around this album. Her breathy vocals are just too much, and there are simply too many moments that are boring filler, which among all the more out there and experimental moments (which are the only actual good parts) just make this whole project feel so messy and disjointed. I love both her albums after this one, but it's safe to say that I think her debut is easily her worst.
it was ok
Da fuq is a FKA twigs?
This was alright but not much variation
sounds like mariah carey sacked her backing band and her songwriting team and got a bloke who mashes a keyboard with one hand and hits things with the other whilst she makes up words on the spot and warbles. dont get me wrong, its still better than mariah carey, its just not very good
I've heard of this artist, but had no preconceptions going in. Result: this isn't for me. Each track takes an age to get going, and frankly it's just a bit boring. If you take the vocals out of the equation, there's very little left. She is clearly talented, and clearly people like her work, but there's nothing here for me to make me want to return. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ (in part) Revisit ❌️ Underwhelming ★★☆☆☆
Pretty makeup don't equal pretty music
Yeah, a bit weird for me
2 - not my cup of tea. Way too electronic. This is an album for producers not for musicians. It definitely had a unique sound but the only song that grabbed me a little was closer
I think I tried to listen to this line 4 times and kept getting distracted (or just maybe could never stay that interested). She seems like a very weird chick. I feel like if you had the opportunity of hooking up with her it could be the best night of your life. Or the weirdest. Maybe both. I thought the album was meh.
This is just way wispy and soft, a bit whiney and occasionally annoying.
It helped me be more empathetic to women I know I don’t know why but I felt like a little girl with princess dreams. I don’t know what the album was about but it’s impressive how she sets up the instruments and communicates the vibe she wants. I didn’t finish the last song I started to hate the album because I was tired of the sound.
Nah.
Not a fan
2,5/5
Muzak.
I have heard OF FKA twigs but otherwise knew nothing about her. Listening to it, I am OK with it but this isn't really a genre I'm into.
Weet niet heel goed wat ik ervan moet vinden
I did not enjoy this.
This was a weird experience. I’ve come across a couple of FKA twigs songs in the past and liked them. Even added them to a playlist. But the entire album did nothing for me. Maybe individual songs are good to generate the proper tone of a mix tape but not all that impressive solo. 2.5/5
this vocal style is going to be the millennial whoop of the 2020s
Not really my thing. FKA twigs is a fine singer but breathy vocals over space synth beats just doesn't do it it.
FKA mid, There are times I think I’m going to love this but it never seems to get going, maybe that’s the point but I wanted more
To begin, I just don't really think I'm a huge fan of electronic music like this. Don't get me wrong, I love a strong instrumental, but this felt so busy at times to the point where I was just confused (which maybe is the point?). I felt slightly disoriented while listening because of this, making it not the most enjoyable experience. I will say her voice is incredibly angelic and beautiful, which I did like listening to. It suits her style of music well and does compliment those instrumentals throughout the album. Overall, I just don't think this kind of style is for me, so I give it 2.5/5 stars.
Fine but boring
Avant Pop having some dubstep elements, vocals being breathy and glitchy, often lingering there for the entire track while leaving the listener expecting more.
It was Alright, not my thing at all though, fine listening experience
Another album cover that gives me the creeps, but looks like most of her albums are like that. High-pitched, breathy, tik tok pop (R&B I guess?). Recognized two weeks, but otherwise kinda bland. 2*
Nahhh. I didn't enjoy this at all. The high pitched vocals were annoying and the backing electronic music didn't offer much either. Turned off after 3 songs. 3/10 (1.5/5)
bezveze. lijep glas ali generični bitovi, repetitivno, monotono, za pozadinsku glazbu u slastičarnici otprilike
Not bad, just much better modern offerings that could have been chosen.
Interesting music and I'm happy its in this list. Not something I will listen to again probably though.
Not much to say…just is not my style. I understand what the critics say they she’s going for, but I couldn’t get down with it.
Enjoyed the music, not the lyrics or vocals as much. Some interesting sounds, but ultimately not for me.
boring. nothing that hooks me.
Lyrics in the background on a number of songs, hard to understand. Good for someone in their 20's, honesty in a relationship.
Overproduced beathy high-pitched beepboop pop is not my thing. I read a few reviews on here saying that as this was FKA twigs debut, this was more about finding her voice - but I went and listened to some of her newer music, I guess she's still looking.
A bit of a snoozefest. I don't like the breathy weak vocals. She might have a great voice but it's hard to tell since it's all autotuned and synthesized to death.
Sounds like sanded-down Björk. Pretty voice, but goes right out the other ear.
I've never heard of FKA twigs before, but based on what I'm reading about this album, I think there's a good chance that I'll enjoy this. Let's jump into my last album of 2014! Overall, I didn't think this album was very good. I did like the overall ethereal sound that was present on a lot of this album, but it felt like LP1 was mostly full of big ideas that just didn't land. The production work and beats were really good, but the vocals and songwriting were just fine. When it comes to electronic pop music, I really want something that has some memorable hooks or melodies, but that wasn't really present on this album at all. Even though the album was pleasant to listen to, I didn't think LP1 did anything to expand the boundaries of alternative hip-hop or electronic music. This album was some decent background music to me, but nothing more.
Interestingly different
Mid. Cool sounds but random and sounds so similar for each song.
So… I didn’t hate this one. But it frustrated me so much. It’s got that “modern day” pop feel, but I dig the sort of minimalistic approach to the instrumentation. It makes it feel a little more than a generic pop album, so it’s at least listenable to me. The thing is, everything is so fucking samey. The first songs were alright, but everything just blended together as it went along. It doesn’t help that Twigs suffers from Mariah Carey syndrome, where she has a gifted voice, but chooses to falsetto everything and have this annoying high-pitched tone instead. Swear to god, some of this album sounds like a mouse in heat. I don’t know man, I can’t stand modern music as is, but I figured it would be a nice break from the indie rock and common crap on this list. But an album where I can’t retain most of the songs is not a good album. Favorite track: Two Weeks Other hits: Lights Out, Closer
Just come up flat for me. Struggled to stay awake.
This wasn't a difficult listen, but conversely, there isn't much there. The semi rap chirpy breathy singing just didn't do much for me. The beats weren't all that interesting either.
I found this surprisingly bland and i think she trades on her reputation for being weird rather than good.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background I'm not sure what's particularly new here that would merit inclusion as an album I must hear before I die. The music itself is fine, doesn't really draw me in.
I didn’t mind it at first and then it kept going. I got slightly bored during my listen and was ready to change the album before it ended
If FKAT had not made this record, ChatGPT undoubtedly would have. The problem isn't that it's not in any one genre (more trip-hoppy than R&B and certainly not punk) but rather that it's so synthetic and ultimately insubstantial. Thinking back a decade, perhaps this was groundbreaking in some way, but given how programmed it is and how common this sound has become, perhaps "Original-ish" is an apt description. One's also reminded of dating younger women who seemed to delight in their own conceptions of sexiness, not worrying too much about whether that mode was at all relatable or if sexiness might actually be in the eye of the beholder.
Someone had a lot of fun on a laptop making this. No actual musical instruments were harmed in the making of this album. Nevertheless, it's fairly interesting at times. Lots of layers, dreamy soundscapes, and breathy vocals. But I suddenly feel the urge to listen a day's worth of death metal now. 2/5 Album 21/2001
... not for me,,,
Not a fan
I wanted it to get better…
I found this incredibly difficult to listen too
This was much more conceptual than I typically enjoy. I liked the songs that were more traditional song style (Video Girl, Two Weeks, Pendulum). I liked her voice, but wish she showed a little more range besides just super high and breathy. There was variety but then again not, I think for me that would be the biggest complaint, it just all blended together and was all just more of the same kind of techy breathy wispyness. Don't hate it but probably won't go back to it.
This is dripping in atmosphere. Is this ASMR rock? It's beats with tweaky twittering & fluttering echoey vocals. The sonic texture is creative but the songwriting doesn't really do it for me, I think it's something I'd have to listen to several times before I "get it" because all the songs sound the same to me.
This album is over 10 years old now and it feels like it’s been 50 since I was into it. Looking back on it now, it’s not as good as I once thought. I no longer enjoy such arty sparseness. It all feels hollow. Also, the vocal effects just make me want to punch a wall. This has a place in the world for some, but for me its place is set firmly in the past.
It was okay I guess, just not really my thing.
The music had potential but I hate the way this lady sings. Or should I say breathes into the microphone.
The sort of artist I see a lot of people talk about online and I never took any interest in, and I feel vindicated. Glitchy chopped up random noises for the beat, stick FKA Twigs doing standard whispered vocals over the top and repeat for 40 minutes FKA Twigs can clearly sing when she isn't doing the hushed, breathy babyish voice, only letting it show for flashes like on Two Weeks. Maybe this vocal style was more innovative in 2014 (I can't really remember, I think it was actually) but it's been pretty heavily abused since so this doesn't sound particularly original for a first time listener Some tracks also feel too spacious to the point of feeling as though they're actually unfinished, such as Lights On. It felt like there was meant to be something in those pauses that go on for just a little bit too long Give Up felt like the closest thing to a fully put together song Not for me Highlights: Give Up
Some tracks, like "Video Girl", are highly experimental. And I give FKA twigs credit for that. But other tracks are repetitious and ordinary, and they dragged on. The last four songs are better than their predecessors.
Not a huge fan of this style, but some of her songwriting chops definitely made me perk up. 2.5/5
Didn't fit the shape of my ears
oh man Twigs - don't you try to lure me in with this deceptive avant-garde ethereal Kate Bush Lana Del Ray Imogen Heap vocal cosplaying and then just drop in that glitchy shit that almost immediately gives me a headache... Hard to even get through the first song as I was worried about a big bait-and-switch but honestly when it avoids the full glitch (it's still there most everywhere but not quite to the Skrillex level of turnthisshitoff) it's not as bad. Although I'm not sure what the goal of this music is - it stresses me out. I suppose some could enjoy the contrast of legato dreamlike vocals with the hyper-frenetic cut and cut and cut and paste Ableton project that each of these songs are but I need a Xanax. And as for the vocals it's just very samey - by the time I get to track 4 I'm thinking "ah yes, this again" and the falsetto only goes so far before becoming a dull and unnoticeable blend. Objectively I can definitely see how people could love this, but I can state I do not. Just remember: Never go full-glitch. 4/10 2 stars.
I wanted to like this more, but I feel like the production is often more interesting than the actual songs.
I had never heard of FKA Twigs before. The overall sound is pretty interesting although not much has really stood out as being a cut above. Experimental in the soundscape though the lyrics are pretty generic/uninteresting.
I’ve learned that avant garde being in the description is a red flag.
Meh
Elevated Love Is Blind filler music. A modern Depeche Mode.
Very atmospheric with cool vocals. I can appreciate what’s happening here but’s it’s not for me
I don’t think this is for me.
Really didn’t know what to expect of this. Far less pop and more creatively experimental than anticipated. From the opening track I thought, “Intersting, this could be a great find” but then it became ever more tedious, lacking in variation of tempo, and frankly by half way in I was really bored.
Slow whisper-y, breathy vocals set over glitchy, electric drum beats pretty much sums up this whole album. It has atmosphere alright, too much for my tastes with minimal instrumentation and very little enthusiasm. Hate is a harsh term, so I would say, "I strongly disliked it". If this is your idea of cool modern music or you're into this type of vocal styling or you feel this is a great soundtrack to your TikTok video, you might like this. If had to watch/listen to FKA twigs live, prop me up, give me a pillow and wake me up when it's over.
Interesting at times, but not enough to ever listen to this again.
Hmm, turns out imagining if Bjork had come out in the 2010s doesn't make me like the music any more
Man every time I’ve gotten an alt R&B album in this list it’s so dour and boring it makes me wonder if the genre is worth it, and so far every time when the album ends it starts playing songs that are WAY better, up beat and fun. I feel like there’s this pervasive thought that all music that is good and heady must also be boring. Blegh
I’m sure that there’s an audience for this, but it definitely isn’t me!
I can appreciate the production, but too much dubstep style wub wub, buzz buzz for my liking.
The reputation of this album precedes it for me. I've only ever heard people talk about FKA Twigs as though she is untouchable, but most of the tracks I've heard haven't really left the biggest impression on me. I liked it more than I thought I would, but struggle to have an emotional connection to the songs and was left kind of wishing she was a bit freakier lyrically to match the sound. It's kind of nostalgic to hear this kind of production after so long shout out to the single guy credited as "demon voice" on the first track. Really torn between 2.5 and 3 at the moment, it makes me feel nostalgic but at the same time I get the impression I'm going to forget these
was thinking 3 because I like elements of this (e.g. the alarm at the end of "Lights On", the beat on "Numbers", the production on "Hours"), settled on 2 after I could barely recall a single song after three listens.
Downtempo electronic music, not my jam
I found LP1 to be a frustrating experience. The album feels like one big chaotic mess, with very few redeeming qualities to hold onto. Between the erratic production, lacklustre lyrics, and vocals that just didn’t work for me, this was a difficult listen from start to finish. There are moments where the production shows glimmers of creativity. Tracks like “Two Weeks” and “Pendulum” have some intriguing textures and experimental beats that stand out. The use of layered sounds and offbeat rhythms hints at the artistic ambition behind the album. I can appreciate the effort to push boundaries and explore something unconventional. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives by a long shot. The biggest issue for me is the vocals. FKA twigs’ voice is breathy and delicate, but it ends up sounding more like a whisper that struggles to convey any real emotion or power. On tracks like “Closer” and “Give Up,” her delivery feels strained and grating, making it hard to connect with the music. Rather than drawing me in, her voice constantly pulled me out of the experience. The production, while occasionally interesting, is all over the place. There’s a lack of cohesion that makes the album feel disjointed and messy. Songs often feel overproduced, with so many layers competing for attention that it becomes overwhelming. Tracks like “Video Girl” and “Lights On” are prime examples of this. the beats are so chaotic that they drown out any potential emotional depth. The lyrics do absolutely nothing for me. They feel vague and unengaging, lacking the kind of sharpness or depth that could elevate the music. Lines like “When I trust you we can do it with the lights on” come off as cliché rather than meaningful. Across the album, the lyrics feel like an afterthought, leaving me searching for substance and coming up empty. i don't care for this album, it just doesn’t work for me on almost any level. The vocals are weak, the production is chaotic and unfocused, and the lyrics fail to connect. While there are brief moments of intrigue in the production, they’re not enough to save the album from feeling like an overproduced, messy experiment. For me, it’s a 2/5. Ambition alone isn’t enough, it has to be backed up by execution, and LP1 just doesn’t deliver.
I can see how this was influenced by sounds that I do like, Trip-Hop, for instance. But this isn't for me.
A production masterclass. Interesting, layered, jagged and technically brilliant. I’m just not sure if the songs are actually any good.
I didn’t like this when I first put it in but it grew a bit on me and I found it was ok - I’m not going to listen to it again but there are far worse albums on here
Not my fave
I just don't get this. It's not *bad* -- it's just not even the slightest bit interesting. There's no real melody, no interesting musicality, no meaningful lyrics (at least, not that I could understand). It feels like someone playing with the musical equivalent of Photoshop. (Garage Band, I guess.)
The whole thing has a bit of a mopey feeling to it. 2.5
Not really my thing.
I guess I like ethereal voices over harder beats than this, eg Massive Attack or Evanescence.
Can’t get into it
bit of a snoozer for me Will I listen to again: 0%
Not really my thing. I’ve tried multiple times over the years. Not a must-listen.
Not a fan. It's very repetitive and there's not much variation in the songs. I don't like her vocals and the lyrics weird me out in some songs It's gets a 2 for its creativity and uniqueness. Plus she's willing to experiment which is always nice to see in music. I've heard worse on this list and I think it's unfair to group it with the albums I've given 1/5
This album made me realise that I would like Björk's music a lot less if it wasn't for her very powerful and distinct voice
This was okay
First track: wow. Second: björky, third: neh.
2.25
LP1 is certainly not for me. Apparently pretty big and pretty recent but had legit never heard of her or it until today, which means I'm old for sure. Too dreamy and weird, her voice is so high throughout it doesn't work for me, probably gets a 2 because it's not outright bad but I can't listen to this and like it.
FKA Twigs, as an artist is obviously not terrible. She has a nice voice and can sing, and the music also not "bad," but I mostly found this album very non-interesting. I don't feel it really pushes anything forward, and since it also isn't something appealing to me, I really can't justify giving it more than 2 stars. I may give it 2.5, but I don't think it fits with what I consider a 3.
Mostly not my kinda thing, but some of the weirder stuff was kinda cool, and some of the more trip hop oriented stuff was enjoyable.
Sparse and skeletal, this post-modern first album by FKA Twigs reminds me of a female James Blake. Both attempt to thin out their songs and strip them down to their most essential elements. Chords and accompaniment are implied, sometimes to the point of non-existence. It's a 'musical' movement, but one that doesn't seem to have reached its proper balance, weighing too much on the gossamer end. "Closer" is my favorite here, as it seems like it has the proper balance of slim but not lacking. The sound is filled out a bit more and has elements of Sigur Rós' ethereal width and space. As a whole, the album is a bit too minimalist for me.
I quite like the weird and wonderful realms of pop but it has to be the right balance. This is slightly weird and different but not ridiculously so. It's a bit of an awkward middle ground. I found it a little boring and halfway through listening I think I worked out why. It's very minimal. There's not a lot going on at all in the background and there's only so far the lack of interesting music can take you. That's not to say it's all bad. The opener is mysterious and 'Lights On' is creepy with a sense of unease. 'Pendulum' is a lovely song, the vocal lines are catchy with some interesting music. 'Closer' is just the right level of weird with a heavenly, angelic sound and the last song 'Kicks' is quite trippy with the best vocals on the album. However, most of these tracks are like the bridges of dance songs. Breathy, glitchy, nice enough vocals, but nothing comes, there's no payoff, it just lingers there for the entire track. It never seems to quite get out of first gear and I wanted slightly more out of pretty much every song. I don't mind if it's lo-fi but it still needs to be interesting, and unfortunately, for quite a lot of this album, it isn't.
Couldn't really get into this at the time it came out, and not on board after a relisten either
These aren't songs. Which is totally fine. But I think the hype was because it's weird and not because it's actually good.
This reminded me a lot of the pared back bjork albums we've had, I'd wager FKA Twigs is a fan. Wasn't quite as good though. Sometimes it would come together quite nicely but i think albums without much change in pace need to be quite creative to keep it interesting and this felt a bit repetitive. Nice enough to listen to once but won't be back, 2.5 but more a 2.
What the hell did i just listen too? Can be described as Bjork like but that doesn't make it good. Finished it so it gets a 2. Numbers was only interesting track
Este disco lo pusieron por las nubes en su época y yo no terminé de pillarle la gracia. Ha pasado el tiempo lo he vuelto a escuchar y más de lo mismo. Música de fondo agradable.
stupid name, bad album
Couldn't do it. It's like she's trying to be as abrasive and amelodic as possible, and has somewhat succeeded. It's not cool, it's not fun, it's dull.
Very modern and expensive sounding, and not my thing at all
2+
This album feels very bland to me. Most of the songs sound the same, have the same content, and none of them pop out at me. It’s one of those albums I had to read the lyrics as I was listening to understand what the sing was about. I do appreciate the dark / sad tones and themes of the album. And the fact she is a good singer is one of the only redeeming qualities of this album.
I had no idea what to expect from this. It bored me. I gave it a couple of chances. There was just nothing to latch on to. It was all a bit lacklustre somehow
I appreciate the production, but not something I would want to listen to regularly. 2.5/5
Is the hardness of the sound the point? I don’t know, I find this soundscape very alienating and distancing. The breathy vocals mean this just feels very … light? Insubstantial? I don’t dislike this but I also couldn’t tell you a thing I like about it Interesting but impossible to get a handle on
Interesting and seems well down, but it’s not for me. 2.5/5
not my style, didn't really enjoy
Did everything I could to like this album but it just isn’t happening. People will repeat ad nauseum that listening music is ultimately a subjective exercise, but I honestly this the point of criticism is to situate any piece of art within its objective situation and contextualise its merits from that vantage. With that in mind, I’m lead to believe that FKA Twigs and the ensemble of producers she had at her disposal were pushing the boundaries of R&B. Incorporating washes of icy synths and soaring vocal effects, the album is at first really quite mesmerising. Additionally, though she is a far cry from the great wordsmiths of popular music, the almost painfully candid manner Twigs deals with the ubiquitous topics of love and heartbreak is occasionally appealing. But there are some objectively deficient aspects to FKA Twigs’ artistry which simply must be called out - though the delusionally ebullient music press would never do so for an artist of her profile, particularly in this genre. But let’s not pretend like this is some milestone of cultural greatness. At it’s best it is simple good, 5/10 atmospherics which couches its earnest pretense in the most obnoxious artifice. In other words, the production which aims at novelty does so aimlessly. I actually really like the other word of some producers on this album (namely, Arca), but the sonic exploration of the mixing desk feels completely clinical here. More novel nowadays would be a producer who opts to serve the song rather than shoehorn another obscure Bossa Nova sample pitch-shifted to sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks. What ultimately gets lost in this labyrinth of sounds are the contributions of Twigs herself. And by the end of this record I was lapsing into the most unforgivable of states when listening to a record - complete boredom. I rate the ambition but this record falls way short of the hype, and is so much less than the sum of its parts.
Not terrible, but not my thing.
sounds like a random persons soundclouf
Though this album has some similarities to Kelela’s “Take Me Apart”, I just didn’t feel this one. Even as background music while it worked, it was almost distracting. I try to give all albums, at least a second lesson before I judge them, but I could only get halfway through the second time before I had to move on. just not my thing.
Eh, not for me. 2.2
jesus christ, i hated everything about the production on this record, but the percussion that sounded like a malfunctioning washing machine on "Pendulum" was by far the worst single element. she seems to have a nice voice, tho.
It's a production masterpiece. Is it enough to be on this list? I think not. 2.5/5.
Hm. Schwebt an mir vorbei.
Like so many albums of the early 2010s, this feels as though it was going to decide the future of mainstream electronic music until one day, it just felt like a product of its time. I guess you could say that about most decades. Huh.
not my kinda
Ugh a lot of tweeting and hooting
2.3.
I enjoyed the music more than the vocals. Not much else more to say.
2-
Meh.
Never heard this. Not my kind of music. I appreciate aspects of this but I didn't care for it. "You're younger than I am broken"
Slow paced ambient electrono pop. Not particularly exciting.
Why am I listening to somebody's GCSE project?
I remember listening to it a few times when it came out after all the hype. For alternative R&B it's excellent. But where it fits for me, It's just ok, off the wall enough for it to pique my interest back then. But nowadays it's not got enough going on for it to be a regular listen.
Not my cup of tea. Wasn’t entirely bad though.
More arty than music
There are stretches of this album that are basically unlistenable. I want to like it, but I just don't get it, truthfully, or how anyone could enjoy this. 3/10.
boring
Weird electric poppy high singing music
good ideas but not my cup of tea.
This was like listening to somebody sing out pages from their diary with ambient almost-dance computer music. I was a bit disappointed as F‘Twigs has brought out a couple of songs on other albums that I like. But nothing caught me here.
Today's album is a weird one. I don't necessarily hate it, but don't know how I feel about it. It's like art pop mixed with trip hop and R&B. Kinda quirky like Bjork or Kate Bush, but more modern. More electronic influences, and you can tell that the music is more manufactured by laptops than created using instruments, which is a sound that I really have a problem with. Any cock weasel can stand behind a computer and press buttons, but it takes real talent to literally play those sounds using musical instruments. But irregardless of all that, she does have a beautiful voice. When the fuck did people forget how to name a band ffs.... All new bands these days have random capital letters, random spelling mistakes, and usually the word Lil in their name. Like.... Hey guys, my name is Lil MSHRUM cOk.... Listen to my shitty music please..... Fuck off. I looked up artists similar to her to see if any familiar artists were listed.... Nope. A bunch of weird random named "artists". Doechii..... Sevdaliza....Tinashe! 333...... Eco2k....... Wtf kinda names are these?!? I'm so out of my element. I really don't like modern pop. Favourite songs: Give Up, Kicks, Lights On Least favourite songs:... I didn't necessarily hate, but didn't care for most of this album. I can't really pick a Least favourite song because the whole record kind of ran together and I couldn't really focus on any of it. 2/5
This was interesting. Some okay mixing and looping, decent voice and a decent shot of the vibe she was going for. Not exactly my style. It almost vaguely feels like it's trying to influence the mood of the listener versus being direct on anything. I doubt I'll relisten. Not sure if this makes sense on the list.
I could not tell the difference in the songs after listening a few times. Not bad music but this feels like an attempt to put "modern" music in the book. Really chill sound, which is not intrusive, but hard to remember once I turned it off.
I had not previously heard of the artist or album. It's a bit out there. It has high pitched (maybe falsetto) R&B-leaning female vocals over a kind of sparse electronic pop instrumentation. A lot of the songs sound very similar to me. The top song didn't really stand out from any other songs on the album for me, but I can see why it would be popular as a single. As an album, this not really something I enjoyed or would see myself listening to again.
Art pop? Minimalistic production lots of low key sounds and whisper singing. Abstract avant-pop? This came out in 2014 and certainly sounds like it could have come out yesterday in 2024 and would not be out of place at all. I've listened to this several times and I'm not sure what I think about it. I do think I need more time with it. I went and read some reviews and it turns out that it's a polarizing album. People either love it or hate it, but more people love it. 2/5
I found this to be another hipster album. It close to what i call Noise pop. Most famous artist is Flume that is can think of. The songs tend to get annoying after a while. I wishi FKA twigs would let her voice shine as she has a great one, but this whispery singing is definitely not my style. Overall, listen to it once but i wont be back for seconds.
Not my sort of thing although I appreciate the artist's talent.
Was vibing with this a bit, but overall feel it’s one of those artsy albums that gets a lot of praise, but one that’d I’d never think to listen to again. Almost like an Oscar movie which definitely has artistic appeal, but not broad appeal.
Artsy but lacked a hook to pull me in.
Interesting, but no.
Should be commended for some of the interesting stuff she does electronically, but overall didn't really land for me. I didn't find the ambience as sensual as I think I was intended to. I wasn't aware that this website covered modern editions of the book, so that should be interesting for the future.
Ok, by track three I’m already checking how much longer I have to listen to this. So boring. It feels too manufactured. It’s trying too hard to be interesting, and really just giving me a headache. It’s like an album of falsetto ASMR. Irritating.
Not my thing but I've heard worse.
Quite enjoyed, but only as a background tinkle. Favourite track: Kicks
She could have a good voice but it's hard to tell with the autotune. Not really my thing.
2/10. Nice voice just not for me
I can definitely see the appeal and did enjoy some parts of a couple of the songs but overall didn’t enjoy the album.
Not for me.
Background music. Nothing that stands out.
Honestly didn’t even have time but definitely gave me Grassi music vibes
There was not enough Sydney Sweeny in this episode of Euphoria. Although the production is pretty darn good here, it sometimes sounds like they recorded this album in the echoed bowels of the sewers. And she had to whisper sing to keep the ghouls and goblins from finding her.
NNot my cup of tea. H&M music
Well produced but that's it. Maybe I'm just not cool enough.
Listened 3/13/24. I listened to the first half and then listened to about the first minute of the remaining tracks. No idea why this has received such acclaim. It is well produced, but I found it boring.
Repetitive
strange 2 stars
Ok, techno-pop with naughty lyrics. I'll give it a go........ Not for me. I found this somber and uninvolving. Music to sleep by.
I'm old. I can't hang with modern pop music. It's just so... bad. This is a *bit* more interesting and creative than some but it's still shit I would never choose to listen to.
This is the soundtrack to a sad lap dance from your goth girlfriend
This is the kind of music that would annoy me if I heard it in a restaurant or a shop.
I'm just having a hard time because her voice is so... breathy. It's making it hard to tell what she's singing. And because of that, the songs blurred together a LOT. A lot of them had very abrupt endings, like she couldn't tell how to end them. I kinda liked the riff in "Closer". Otherwise... nope, not feeling it. Next.
Somehow or another this was Time's Album of the Year in 2014. Don't know what that says about 2014. Not a big fan. Lots of weirdness, plus lyrics that are a bit ugh. Sorry, I like my sexual innuendos to actually have innuendo. Moments that I liked: Lights On (weird moments, but I liked the acoustic bass and the vibe in the chorus), Closer (generally a good track but still has weirdness), and Give Up (had to get pretty far through the album to find songs I liked).
There is nothing interesting for me. Music is too minimalistic. I don't enjoy that type of vocal.
Dreamy elektro RnB, gar nicht meins
Eh.
good sound, not my taste
I'm not sure if it's ethical to keep a woman on the edge of orgasm for the recording of an entire album but now we know what it sounds like.
Meh
puh puh puh - not my style
"Two Weeks" was kind of cool back then, but now it's a bit worn out, like the rest of the album.
Discount purity ring
How to create a "modern classic": 1. Record a completely generic pop album (make sure to not put any effort into the vocals); 2. Put random glitchy beep-boops everywhere; 3. You're now officially avantgarde and experimental, congratulations on the 9/10 Pitchfork review. Fake weirdness. TikTok music. A slab of processed ham wrapped in gold foil is still a slab of processed ham. 2/5 because the first two songs were actually promising.
Something there, but not for me 2
Didn't really hate it but wow it just blends into 1 song that goes on for 40 minutes. This would good to listen to in the background of a movie or tv show but nothing I would seek out intentionally. I thought the music itself sounded fine and wasn't too off putting. Overall a meh. 4/10
Disappointing: I was excited to listen to this project and god damn it was far below my expectations. I have always seemed it being claimed as one of the best modern albums but I have no clue what the critics are listening to. This felt odd in the sense it was all very sporadic with the electronic elements to the point it got annoying with t not focusing on one solid beat for the whole album. Just dull and irritating.
There were a couple of bright moments but overall this wasn't the vibe I was feeling today.
She’s got a great singing voice, but I didn’t enjoy the slow R&B ballads. Wasn’t my thing, and I’m unclear how this stands above other R&B that comes before it. 2/5
Not my style and pretty slow for edm
I’m not sure how to describe the this. The whole album is like a bunch of love songs written in the apocalypse, and it’s so unusual I’m left confused about how to actually rate it. It was all very novel and interesting, and not awful, but it’s still not something I’d come back to. 2/5
Pop music created 90% with computers. Think The xx with more brutal “instrumentation”. 4.1/10
2.5
Þessi varð eiginlega óáhugaverðari við aðra hlustun. Ekkert eftirminnilegt hér, nú eða skemmtilegt.
It started with a total potential to be a good and modern R&B, but it ended up being just a strange mix of 2000s pop and electronic music. It's not for me!
Floaty ethereal bullshit with a pretty voice over top
I don’t know what this was. It stressed me out
Pretty voice would be better suited with a trip hop producer tho
Two Weeks is a modern masterpiece - the rest doesn’t hold up.
Kinda nice vibes. Music from before I liked this music. Probably won't return.
I'm aware of who FKA twigs is, but I've never actually listened to her music until today. Honestly, I was hoping I'd enjoy it more. This just really isn't my type of music, and I absolutely hated the first few songs, though the album did pick up as it went on.
Not sure if it's a mix of old pop with new pop with a side of K-pop, but for me it's like she didn't find her style.
fka twigs' lp1 has a sound that hasn't been present on this list before now! it has dreamy, ambient vibes, which have been done before but are always enjoyable, but they come with an electronic, r&b combination that was fascinating to listen to. while i don't know the full history of r&b and ambient music, these genres allow lp1 to stand out from the crowd. the ambiance created by fka twigs is quite lovely. 2.5
An interesting and well done electronic endeavor, for sure. But ultimately, it was just kind of boring; it was ambient and never really hooked me. A lot of music has this kind of ambient electronic sound these days, but I remember when this album came out, it was fairly unique and well received! Ultimately, I just don't really think it's my thing, though I can definitely appreciate the strong work that went into it on the production side to keep this electronic album sounding tight and sounding good. For me, this album is more than a 2, but not a 3.
Pretty dull.
Ya know when Lorraine McFly says to Marty, “That was some interesting music.” But ya know what she means. This was how I felt about this album. Very sexual lyrics, and breathy singing on lots of the songs. Good vocal range but “interesting” stuff. Not my cup of tea. 1.5⭐️s
I think I've heard everything this has to offer before and found it unremarkable the first time. Maybe in 2014 it was new to break into the mainstream with breathy soprano over whatever sub-subgenre of electronic this'd be called. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Meh. Boring
It's okay. Not really my thing though
Not for me
Not bad, but I didn't really enjoy it. I can see that there is some artistic value to this album, but it's not something that I'm into.
Somehow I had Give Up on my iPod around the time this came out. It was possibly the free song of the week on iTunes. I think they still had that in 2014. Anyway, I actually like that song and I very rarely listened to this type of music. Never listened to the album until today and compared to Give Up, the rest is a disappointment. I guess Kicks was okay too.
I've always felt like I should like her stuff more than I do. On paper it has a lot that I like, and some of the producers connected with it I really love. Somehow though, I just don't connect too much with it. It is technically super impressive and I do enjoy listening to it, I just don't find myself wanting to go back much.
Really like the music, could do without the lyrics… it’d be nice for this to be an instrumental album instead lol
This was just breathy noise. I didn’t notice when it ended.
This was weird but not as off-putting as say, Bjork. I enjoyed some of the last couple songs, but this is outside my normal zone of listenability.
I enjoyed some of the arrangements and the more "bare" soundscape. The problem with that it highlighted her voice, which to be honest I don't like very much. Overall it was just ok.
I had low expectations going in. Better then i expected but still not my thing.
I didn't need to hear this one. Some of the beats/production were at least interesting. But I will never put this one on again.
I actually like some FKA Twigs songs, so I’m disappointed by how much I didn’t enjoy listening to this.
Not a great voice. Just soft, breathy and easily replicated.
there's something good in there somewhere, it just gets lost.
my wife likes music like this. but, not my thing. pass.
good length, the r&b influence and her voice are mildly annoying. the xx is better. 2.5 closer
This album tries so hard to be quirky and different with its dumb sound effects everywhere. Every song sounds the same, boring pop with a good voice that never melodically matches the music. The very few parts that are catchy can't save this turd. 1.5/5
Not my style but it is probably good
Not my vibe
Ultra modern and experimental. More of an interesting art piece than an enjoyable record to listen to.
This is some whispery experimental pop.
Not my kind of pop
She tried but not really hard enougth
Interesting in parts, ultimately not interesting enough for me.
i am glad that music like this exists and people like it but i did not
mag sie, aber is abiz boring
Barely listenable. Maybe an extra point for some nice stylish choices?
I felt like there was something good here under the surface, trying to break free. But it didn't try hard enough and got overwhelmed by the blandness. It's a shame, I almost liked it. But I didn't.
Just another album that washed over me without eliciting any emotion whatsoever
Appreciate some of the musicality but just modern enya
Not really my stuff, I recognise the value and it reminds me of GRIS, so that's a plus. But in the end I wouldn't listen to this again
Samey, no melodies or tunes to peak of. Not for me.
Not my thing.
It's not for me. It's too generic. Maybe I could give credit for it having (some) powerful lyrics. The songs are pretty great for dancing I guess. I don't imagine myself wanting to listen to this...ever.
I appreciate what she is trying to do here. The production is great and I hear the influence of Bjork, Kate Bush and others, on top of the R&B/techno/space thing but it doesn't do much for me.
It's not terrible, just isn't my taste
a modern r&b artist very airy but nothing really happens in these songs 2.5
Very breathy, sounds like everybody else
2/5. A unique voice mixed with good beats should yield good results but the songs just come out boring and uninspired most of the time. I can listen to it, I just would rather listen to something else.
Interesting electronica, breathy voice just gets overdone. Not going to stay on my playlist.
Zweverige popmuziek. 't is niet echt aan mij besteed
couple of songs
Interesting but does not stand out
Wanted to like this after seeing all the bad reviews. Ended up agreeing unfortunately. Great vocals ruined by over-producing. Sounded like a pop Goldfrapp but worse. Unlucky for FKA
La tapa me pareció preciosa!
Twigs has bent and mashed up genres to the extent that she has made something creative and original. Well done for that. The only problem is it does not sound very nice in my ears. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Two Weeks Date listened: 19/10/22
Not my thing but didn’t need to turn it off
Too much going on for me. Felt like I was having a conversation with 20 people at once.
Quite nice to listen to early this morning but not something I think I would seek out otherwise. 2/3*?
Didn't like it at first but it did grow on me. It was quite good for zoning out and working to.
It's not terrible by any means, as I liked her voice and some of the production, but it was sluggish and felt way longer than its 40 minutes.
Sure, this album was sonically innovative at the time, but it also lacks substance when it comes to interesting vocal melodies. As a result each and every song blends into one another--once you've heard that very cool track "Two Weeks", it seems like a lot of the tunes after it are trying to repeat the same template, but with far less success most of the times. And when the songs are not trying to do this, they're just shapeless blurs supported by weird bloops and bleeps (see "Pendulum"). Sometimes innovation, weird sounds and full-blown eccentricity are not enough. You also need real songcraft to make all those things cohere into a stable whole. Fortunately, the tunes on FKA twigs' second LP, 2019's *Magdalene*, were a little more moving, effective and dynamic, while retaining the off-kilter, eccentric nature of those displayed on LP1. So it's a 'no' to *LP1* for me here. But maybe I could say 'yes' to *Magadalene* later on... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 814 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 100 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 46 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 41 (including this one)
I'm writing as I'm listening and overall I think it's OK. I don't love it, and I have had this notion in my head that she is a little overrated but with full transparency I have not heard all of her stuff. Is this one of the 1001 best albums of all time? I'm trying to find which parts make this record a standout and deserving of a place on this list. I'm hearing electronic (indie?) pop. Her voice is nice, but I'm not really blown away by it or anything. The production is cool and interesting- it's not formulaic, and has moments of minimalism (1 minute mark of "Hours"), and nice panned elements pretty often. I'm listening on speakers and not headphones, but the speakers are appropriately placed to experience panned sounds, and I get the impression of the sounds being panned for the sake of being panned / doing something different. It's hard for me to be wowed by excessive panning as something extraordinary however. I do really like how in "Video Girl" the chorus slows down tempo. That is very unique. This song and "Numbers" were the tracks I liked most. I did find it unfortunate that the choruses of these tracks were really repetitive vocally and lyrically though. Numbers has some intriguing production on it but it almost feels random to me- like there's no connection thematically to the lyrics or anything like that. It's almost like a video-game battle song. Is there some Gestalt "the sum is greater than the parts" happening? That has definitely been the case with some records on this list, but I'm not sure with this one. The album cover is cool and makes me think. It's like some photos of her real face and then some 3d modeled parts (her right eye, her right cheek, and her right ear). Pretty funky. Maybe there's some kind of connection here to the idea of "sum of the parts" here? I'm giving it a 2/5 because I think it has some interesting things in a few tracks but I wasn't really blown away by it.
This is really just not my taste I guess. I tried but I just couldn't find myself getting into it.
Très niché. À connaître, mais faut être dans le mood pour apprécier.
I did not like this and will not waste any more words on it.
Not bad, but hardly memorable. Definitely an enjoyable vibe, and some interesting experimentalism going on. Could be a grower
Mostly annoying but occasionally catchy.
This didn’t do much for me. Not sure if I need to give it another listen but was happy when it was on over
I was glad when it was done.
Not my kind of music. Good singer but i just don’t care for electronic music and echos/effects on the voices.
Not for me. The production is so weird and busy
Strange album. I can see why people like it. I really didn't, though.
Mouth-wateringly interesting multi-layered productions with R&B vocals. Not that enjoyable as a whole, it sounds messy, formless, and repetitive. It made me want to listen again to Taylor Swift's "reputation", not because it's a good album, but because it's one of the albums in this domain that I actually enjoyed once, ahhh good ol' 2010's. Overall, it basically sounds like a hifi version of vaporware.
Meh, kind of on the fence with this one. It had some interesting moments, but overall it is pretty underwhelming.
This is an unfair (and probably inaccurate) comparison - but, she's like the UK version of Ariana Grade? I know -it's mostly just the voice and the subject matter that makes that connection for me. The "music" is definitely more "indie" that "pop" - but not by that much. It's okay - probably worthy of a better ranking than I'm going to give it.
Not really sure if I'm qualified to judge this music but I know I don't like it.
the music is kind of creative and new but her singing doesn't add much unique to the tracks
