Reviews (page 5 of 7)
One of those records I wonder if I just heard the same song 14 times in a row. OK, maybe not that bad, I did enjoy it as background but once was enough.
I was aware that Miss Twigs was a big thing 10 years abmgi but u never dipped my toe in her. (Ermmmmmm..) Anyway its a bit Bjorn with Kid A glitch. It washes over a bit but interesting.
Like this. If I remember would like to listen again and maybe explore more of her stuff.
Impressive production and vocals. But songs are a bit meandering
I had already loved a few tracks by FKA Twigs but somehow never listened to this whole album. Interesting production paired with her high, sometimes ethereal vocals. Her EP called M3LL155X is still my favorite. On this, Pendulum and Two Weeks are the big standouts. There are some annoyingly repetitive moments on here and song ideas that don’t feel like they have an aim, unfortunately.
Good alternative R&B but doesn’t really speak to me personally
Honestly every other time I’ve listened to FKA I was a little set off by her high pitch vocals and trembling sound. But when I listened to a full project I get lunged into the world she’s building and it all comes together in a pretty beautiful way. I liked this more than I expected but I don’t think I’d listen again in a serious way
This was pretty good.
This was actually nice background music at work. Didn’t pay attention to the lyrics but was pretty chill.
Decent future-facing R&B. Interesting production that creates a specific mood (there are some tracks on here, and on her Magdalene album, that genuinely creep me out a bit, which I *think* is a good thing?) Usually at its best at the end of tracks when the different layers combine into a heady cocktail of bleepy bloops vocal counter-melodies. A couple of duds though. 3.5
As with many others, not my thing but not bad
An album that is a few decades too late. If it came out in the mid 90s I would maybe laud it, however it offers nothing new to me.
interesting, not the sort of pop i usually listen to
Avant-pop.
listened
I honestly can't believe there is an album here within the last decade! This is pretty good. She has a good voice and the production is really good and experimental (not too much tho). Overall this is ok. It's not really something I super enjoy, but it is still pretty good. I like the different things she does with the production and her vocals. A high 3/5
I thought It was a bitta fun to see some early hyperpop. didn't do all that much for me but certainly wasn't bad
I've listened to this quite a few times to try and get it. Lyrically it's bland and uninspiring, tales of remarkably impersonal intimacy. The production, use of noise and synthesisers are the main appeal of the piece. The noise complements well with the use of jarringly placed tuplets and percussion cutting into pop choruses. The combination of this with the spacey production and unfamiliar timbres make this a very effective psychadelic piece but the lyrics and choruses still feel like such a drawback on the piece as a whole.
6/10. Pretty pleasant, didn't really strike my fancy.
I'm honestly borderline disappointed. This is a fine album, but I'd always heard that FKA twigs was a revolutionary artist, and this sort of just sounds like any mainstream pop album? Maybe she got there first, but at least in 2023, less than a decade after its release, it doesn't necessarily sound like anything that special. The first few tracks were pretty good, pretty catchy. But this type of sultry R&B is dime a dozen nowadays, and nothing here really stands out from the crowd for me. At the least though, I can say she does sound like a fully-formed artist here, which is impressive for her first album.
I really enjoyed her second album when that came out and went back to listen to this afterwards reading the acclaim, but didn't find the tunes so was disappointed after that. Different experience now, Lights On is great, Two Weeks is mesmerising, although Hours doesn't really seem to go anywhere. Pendulum is similar except it DOES go somewhere. Ok second half now and I'm understanding my previous reaction. Everything is fine but nothing stands out. Magdelane is way better as an album. I wonder what the EPs sound like, perhaps this should have been EP3.
Interesting. Not sure how much i like it….
Good
good album, underappreciated gem!
Avant-pop.
Fine

Some good ideas here but they need to be fully fleshed out.
Sounds like every other ambient-electronica piece that makes me question this list. It's okay, but must-listen? 3/5
At first I didn’t like the high pitched wailing and bleeps, but it got under my skin and could feel the sexiness. There are hints of The XX but far raunchier and more experimental. Not really my thing, but I can understand the critical acclaim.
This is a big improvement over the more modern music that we've received lately, yes I'm looking at you Lorde. This album is multi-layered, complex and very well produced. A modern day Kate Bush or Bjork with some dubstep beats mixed it. It could use a bit more variety though.
Meh. 3/5
normalno
Surprised at how much I liked it. 3/5
definitely a pop album
A lot of buildup and very little payoff. Best track: Two Weeks
The soundtrack to sex robots performing gentle bondage on their human slaves in the back of a cathedral converted into a charging station/sex dungeon. 🪢🪢🪢
Some very interesting sounds and themes in the vein (imho) of early the Weeknd; dark, sexy, a little weird. Still not really something I'm drawn back to.
Unique, but I got tired of the falsetto vocal. Felt like it needed visuals.
Very... if aliens had listened to modern RnB and tried to recreate it. If La Roux made a collaborative album with Burial (which I'd throw some money at, now that I type it out). Weirdly horny. Do I like it? Eh. Do I hate it? Nah... "Indifferent" is not the right word. It's creative and I've never heard anything like it, but it might just be a little *too* weird. Favorite tracks: "Video Girl", "Lights On"
I thought this was really striking at first, but I got really tired of it by the end. There was kind of a formula where FKA twigs would warble repeated ethereal sounding phrases about jealousy to a background abstract painting of sounds. It is kind of a cool effect. However, all ten songs were this. There wasn't much beat, rhythm, or melody, and I kept hoping something would drop, but it never did. Does it make any sense to say I found it interesting but boring?
At first I thought that 1001 had presented me with another new found gem. It was interesting and different...at first. But then each track sounded more or less like the previous and it really started to wear me down. I kept hoping for a pivot of some sort, but there was none and what FKA twigs was giving me just didn't hold my interest.
Theres a lot to love here, great vocals (Twig's falsetto is to die for), interesting instrumentation and the production and mixing does a lot of things right, there's an excellent sense of space and depth in the mixing which I really love. Its also taking a rich history of interesting pop and updating it for modern times in a way that's not as maximalist as hyperpop nor falls into the pitfall of being samey, the way a lot of heavily produced music can be. That being said its major downfall is really in your face the whole time and hard to ignore. Its so clean, where's the distortion? where's the tape loops? where's the hiss? where's the slightly dodgey inconsistencies in volume. A few imperfections and some more lo fi techniques would have made this record really shine in a big way. Its so clinical and it never stops battering you around the head with how digital it all is. A massive detriment and a missed opportunity on an otherwise fantastic album.
This is like that Brian Eno album but with whispery vocals. Def a little odd, but much more accessible. I liked it, but may have to give it another listen to let it sink in.
Test-tube music – contrived, synthentic and experimental. It feels often like post-music in that it’s more like assemblages and beats and effects rather than you know playing. Still, one wonders what it would be like live. Not that it's terribly unpleasant. Indeed, it's somewhat dramatic and powerful here and there and intermittently sexy, too. The layering equates to a certain futuristic dreaminess on the best tracks, of which “Kicks” is the most engaging. Overall, however, it's not very memorable or substanive. The sacrifice of flow and melody (if such matter) seems too high a price to pay for these angly and overdetermined formulations. One takes the point that it's not really R&B (save for some vocal echoes on certain cuts) but it's certainly not punk in any menaingful sense and her claims to the contrary suggest she lacks knowledge of what she's after or what she's done, as does her taking umbrage at the accusation that it's trip-hoppy (which it most certainly is). One supposes it most aligned to alt-indie axes (in Bjork or Portishead vein, roughly), but interesting guitar bits that would make it more so get lost under the high drama of the vocals that are always (and sometimes oppressively) front and center. The question is begged: is it really genre-spanning or simprly accreitve and thus muddled as it certainly sounds? One would've thought AI and cyborgs could deliver a stronger product or output than this. In any event, one is not much compelled. More to the point, one struggles to hear what's timeless here, innovative though it may have seemed in its moment. The beats and sound effects seem destined to age poorly, as is ever the case with music manufactured to the standards of a certain time with state-of-the-art production techniques (which change every two weeks after all).
Atmospheric, but didn't really make an impression on me
3.7 + A mechanized fairy queen singing over the soundtrack to Super Metroid for Super NES. Dark, synthetic, colorful. Sometimes the arrangements feel overly busy with too many swirling elements and rhythmic shifts. I prefer songs like “Give Up” and “Kicks” that are simpler and in which the parts are given more space to breathe.
kralicem slaylemis ama tam slayleyememis ondan 3.5 rly good for a debut album tho favs: lights on, two weeks, give up
Chilled
It was not my favoutite but you can certainly hear the influences for modernday pop. Overal a nice experience
It’s not really my thing. But I loved the chances taken and FKA has a great, sultry vocal throughout. I get the appeal. I get why people like her. Perhaps her subsequent releases will hit me a little different.
This album started well, with more than an air of Portishead about it. I was pleasantly surprised and found the first three of four tracks interesting. But after a while, it all became a little too obvious, each track sounding pretty much like the one before.
Not my usual musical fare but I don't hate this. She clearly has a good voice. I don't usually like the "made in my room on garage band" type beats but it's inoffensive enough. Middle of the road background music to distract you while doing boring work tasks. 3 Stars.
The quiet part of techno songs but that's the whole album. Not bad, but each song feels like literally half a song.
Bueno
Lovely stuff
This was good, but all the songs sounded the same, but a little different. Idk, I wasn't fully feeling it.
Interesting. Listen again
I’m trying to work out when this album would sound at its best, but I don’t think 6:30am on day 5 of the summer holidays is it. I mostly enjoyed the sounds, the lyrics less so. But I didn’t get it and it didn’t get me.
A beautiful voice, overproduced. Some of the songs were enjoyable, but as a whole the album didn't really do much for me.
Great art pop album with a tasteful production that is leaning on the atmospheric side of the spectrum. I was thinking of Arca while listening to it and I wasn't surprised to learn that he produced this. I wish it went harder a little bit and used Arca's weirdness to its full potential, but I get it that it's not what she was going for, so it's a minor complaint. Her second album is even better apparently, so I'll make sure I check it out shortly.
Good dream pop. Electronic vibe, smooth..Remind me of Lana Del Rey.
Dream pop, glitch hop, whatever it is, it was nice, creative and original. I can't say that I'll come back to it again, but I appreciated it. Glad to see a few more recent albums in this list.
Really interesting sound, but got a bit same-y as it went on.
Kind of a cool vibe, a bit slow and samey so far, but interesting.
It's okay, but Madelene should have been on the list in its place.
Torn between 3 and 4 on this one. “Two Weeks” is an obvious highlight, but I felt like I was maybe missing the moment or impact that this had. It’s a prime example of mid-2010 pop, but I don’t know if it’s the best example of the period (although maybe it helped define the genre-sound at the time).
Not my style but well done.
I enjoyed this, although the music felt perhaps a little one note. Some interesting things going on in the lyrics.
21st century Kate Bush?
Buen timbre de voz, sin destacar especialmente. Canciones relajadas, algo de pop, sensuales. Sin pena ni gloria se puede decir.
I am unable to articulate why, but I strangely liked it. Never heard it before.
Skipped through - not my jam
How does one approach an established genre, rip away all conventions, and interpret it entirely anew? This album is a veritable master class in doing just that. FKA twigs' vision of R&B is wholly her own and it creates an infinitely large space for creativity, where it seemed (to my uninitiated ear) there was wasn't much left to work with.
At first I thought I wouldn't like it but as it went on, it wasn't so bad.
I’m feeling a little conflicted here the vocals and lyrics kinda suck but the production is AMAZING, she really has a great taste in producers overall 6/10
73. LP1 - FKA Twigs 10 tracks. Never heard of him/her/them. It's unusual, but I don't want to turn it off yet. Giving me a cool black Bjork vibe. She can really sing! Big strings would compliment her voice. I like it. 3/5
I found some of it irritating and some of it decent. So, here we are in the middle.
I'm not sure about this, it was ok but I won't be listening again
Never quite lifts off for me. Like many albums, it comes down to subjective preferences regarding vocal style and I'm just not into the melodrama implied in the high pitched/breathy thing.
Started off strong but got repetitive for me. Liked the beats and sounds in general, though.
Reminds me of my vaporwave phase in high school. Atmospheric with great electronic sounds, but highly repetitive and although it's a nice experience all throughout, nothing stands out beyond a few select tracks: "Lights On", "Two Weeks", "Pendulum", and "Video Girl." I think "Preface" did a good job at setting my expectations for the album without overwhelming me, but it could've been better. Ended kinda weak. Also, how is this R&B? If anything, this reminds me of the art pop of Kate Bush.
Comença de forma gairebé impecable; 'Lights On' i 'Two Weeks' són dues joies atemporals.
This pop / hip-hop blend is all too generic nowadays. The vocals seemed the same throughout the entire LP. Meh.
I enjoyed this, but wasn't mind blowing
single voice, soft electronica, sexy fun times
A great voice and excellent production. However this isn’t the first time I’ve tried to get under the skin of this album and failed. Always leaves me a little cold despite songs like two weeks and a couple of others
Lugn elektroniskt
26th August 2021 Listened on the living room speaker while working, went out in the evening to see Douggie's play at the Bridge theatre with Harry. Enjoyed this, I like the breathy, etherial singing style and original sound. Ghostly.
Ganz cool
Unorthodox but not necessarily bad
It was alright
Two weeks
This album is a mix of chill electronic vibes and ethereal R&B lyrics that produce something truly soothing, but also that smolders in the darkness. Could this be the future of R&B?
pretty good stuff, but also some REALLY boring tracks
Promise I'll try harder on this one
Ok, not my thing
Reminds me of grimes
Sorta wooshy and mystical sounding, hard to tell what the lyrics are. 0RS
Really good, but not sure if rush back.
Not as interesting as I wanted it to be
enjoyed this - had never heard of her but has a good trip hoppy feel and good vocals.
Weird
Soul, tecno, pop.
Not a fan of this whole Whisper Baby style of singing, but it was nice to break up the sausage party at least. I liked the boning with the lights on song and every now and then she’ll sing like a normal human being and it sounds great! I just don’t understand why she doesn’t do it all, or at least most, of the time. Is she responsible for this whole trend? Feels like Billie Eilish owes a nod or two her way at the very least. But yeah. Perhaps if 9 out of 10 movie trailers from the past five years didn’t have a cover song of a classic tune sung in this exact style I’d be more prone to be down with the Twigs. Not her fault, I suppose.
Album carried by Two Weeks
Chill RnB with electronic vibes....not bad.
Was okay, too much electro thought. Her voice is not too bad.
Strange, Interesting. Liked it, did not like it. But it had something special.
Good album just not my style

Boooooring :-(
Could see enjoying this as atmospheric music, but didn't hook me.
Thought I’d like it not 2.4
This is at least interesting: many times it sounds as if there's a decent song somewhere in the unfinished hooks, melodies and sounds / noises. But then there's not, it frustrates me. Also, I am an old metal head, I miss the sound of at least some "classical" instruments.
This is very interesting don't hate it
Not for me. Just kinda eh. Not my uaual speed
Pretty cool production and soundscape that unfortunately didn't lead to actual songs that were all that memorable. Only one song I would really go back to here. 2/5
first and last time listening to fka twigs. weird and obnoxious.
Entirely forgettable
That was really bad. Breathy vocals over electronic music that was all over the place. Video Girl was the only song that had any interest for me, and it must have been in comparison with what preceded, because I watched the video after I made it through 40 minutes of slop and just found it irritating. Sadly, I've heard worse on this list.
Buenas melodías , no para mí
There is nothing special about this album. It was ok at best.
Meh. Boring, repetitive lyrics over boring repetitive sounds. This isn’t special at all.
Breathy falsettos on top of autotune & overly produced sounds….bored after 2 tracks. And lyrics all on same note-just adds to the monotony
Good voice, but wtf is the instrumental (example numbers)
I am sure if I should be more disappointed with FKA Twiggs or myself for this subpar rating. After listening to this album multiple times since its 2014 release, I still find myself searching for some level of satisfaction. Despite moments of interesting electronic innovation, the album failed to make a great impression. Fault of the reviewer? I constantly find a little variety in current female singer-songwriters (for lack of a better term; maybe musical artists would broaden all prior labels). The songs come at two speeds: slow and slower. The vocals’ breathy high pitched register rarely changes, and the heavy production process often robs them of real emotion. It seems like an act: here is how I should sound when I am wounded. Maybe if I perused a book of lyrics something would jump out at me, but thematically I heard only relationship songs, tending to be ones that went sour. The album contained most of these qualities through the first half-a-dozen songs. Finally, “Numbers” offered interesting electronic drum patterns and some darker elements. Similar qualities helped “Closer” hold my interest. This could be a “you have to be in the mood” record, but it lacked the emotional quality to even earn that ranking.
An artist from my generation that I've never actually listened to. My main takeaway is that this sounds very inspired by Bjork, but never reaches the heights as Bjork's best work does.
I support women having careers, so good for her even if I didn't find this compelling
Took a point away for the album art. You can’t put stung by a venomous insect art on a non venomous album it just doesn’t work
2.4 Black Björk
This album wasn't intended for me (fat mid 40s white dude) was it?
All build up, no release. Tantric music.
I wish it was weird in an interesting way
Hyyyyyvin omalaatuista musiikkia. Siistiä silti että tekee just semmosta musiikkia mitä haluaa.
Strange to say the least. Almost a Björk type. I appreciate the unique sound but had a hard time getting through the album.
I'm skeptical about mildly atonal electronic music from the 2010s being admitted to this list. At least it's somewhat justified by being relatively popular. That drumbeat at the very beginning of Lights On... I could listen to it for hours. Something about it scratches an itch I didn't even know existed. After a few seconds, though, we get a sudden switch-up into this weird minimalist psychedelia, with a sort of Creative Commons arpeggio on an unidentified instrument combined with a reversed synth(?), hesitant percussion, and a vocal that I don't particularly enjoy. The last minute or so of the track is where we get a full-on soundscape and the experience becomes genuinely impressive. Two Weeks approaches something similarly soundscapey, but is a lot more aurally accessible. I like the high vocals here, but *not* the octave harmonies (come on, we can do better than this). Hours and Pendulum close out side 1 in a slightly underwhelming fashion, though I'll give points for the intricate textures in the latter. You can't look at me with a straight face and declare Numbers to be a strong track. It's disjointed, monotonous, repetitive... and that synth is horrific on the eardrums. (Let me go over and repair my windows and then I'll be back with you.) The next song, Closer, does slightly better – but again I feel FKA twigs is trying too hard to be "cool" and "mesmerising", catering to white alternative girls and extremely edge-case audiophiles and nobody else. All in all, only six of the ten tracks are better than silence (a low threshold for music, surely), but only one – Two Weeks – is something I would ever consider returning to. There's frustratingly little sonic variation to be found here. Rolling Stone ranked this the 16th best album of 2014, writing: "The haunting mix of pop and EDM weirdness takes a while to kick in – which only makes it more delicious when it does." I don't know about that. Deliciousness is subjective. This really made the cut over Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes and Ultraviolence? 2/5 Key tracks: Two Weeks
Not for me, found it boring
Meh
Not for me, kind of pretentious high art style stuff but with not enough substance and musicality.
This was fine, just not really my cup of tea
1,9/5
This shouldn't be here. Feels like another one of those knee-jerk reactions that happened during the modern updates of the book. Where an album looks like it might be important, but then the importance does not last long at all. It's not like the worst thing I've ever heard, but it's bland 2010s alt-hip-hop pop. I would go to say that this is bad, but it definitely isn't good, and it's not good enough to be on a list like this. I did mostly enjoy the song below, but I wouldn't even say that song makes the album worth listening to. Favorite Song(s): Two Weeks
LP1 was an album that had good ideas but i feel like they were not executed as well as they could have been. When i first saw this album, i thought it was gonna be an alt rock album by some band but in actuality, it turned out to be a dream pop album by a singular artist (with help from a bunch of others). This album tries to go for this ethereal, dream pop sound kinda similar to Bjork but in my eyes, a lot of these songs are compositionally very odd. Despite the weird compositions, the album as a whole was just very forgettable with me struggling at points to find a favorite and least favorite song. This was an album that had promise but unfortunately fell flat. Best Song: Numbers Worst Song: Lights On
Tough one to rate. It's certainly unique, but messy and repetitive enough to simply not be enjoyable for me.
Not very memorable music, wasn’t enjoying it that much
I didn't understand the hype around this album when it first came out, and I still don't understand that hype. Yawn.
This is not for me. It was interesting in parts, but too sparce for my liking.
4/10
I mean, it's not bad, but I didn't like it.
Favorite songs: Hours, Closer Love the ethereal music. Not so much the vocals.
Uninteresting electronic music with boring breathy vocals. After the first two songs I went into the reviews and read some 4 and 5 stars to see what I was missing. I just couldn’t get into this
Head scratcher, didn't do it for me!
Mellow and interesting but failed to capture me.
I really don't understand what this album is doing. I thought FKA twigs was a more generic pop musician but this album is very avant-garde. I think its interesting, but its also not very listenable. I feel that it succeeds at everything it wants to except for being a good album? I feel bad docking it for my own skill issue, but I also didn't really enjoy it. 2.5/5
Cool vibes. It's not really my style, but I don't hate it. I do think it's well produced, and it has a dreamy quality to it that I can see appealing to a lot of people. The songs felt repetitive and long to me though, and at the end of the day it's just not really for me.
I haven't felt more like a boomer in some time with this opinion... but this just feels like modern fluff to me. Sounds like anything else you'd hear on radio or on some random Spotify playlist to my ears. Feels a bit like the author thought "I'll show them I can be with the times, let's pick something for the current generation!". Not rock bottom, but very forgettable.
Not-like-other-girls-pop-music. It feels like it attempts to sound artsy and different but it honestly just sounds like generic pop to me. Feels like this would fit well in to any pretentious teen show. I tried multiple times to get into it but I never really managed. I recognised “Two Weeks” which felt like the song with the most going for it. Still, I was pretty bored throughout. 2 stars.
Sounds like an attempt to go against the mainstream as a goal instead of a path to something else. 3/10
180/1001 First listen. This did nothing for me. Cool album cover though. 4/10
Not what I expected, and I didn’t really like it.
FKA twigs has a wonderful voice, and it's clear that she cares about what she's writing and singing, but I just did not get into this at all. The music was a little too cold and robotic for what I like in R&B - growing up in Michigan, Motown music is in my veins and I always want my R&B to retain some element of that groove and warmth/humanity I found in those old records. The melodies almost seem non-existent? There were a few tracks that I felt had okay elements to them, but there was no one song that I liked as a whole. Giving this one two stars because I think there's merit to this and I don't find it devoid of talent, but I just can't see myself ever listening to it again.
Very odd stuff here. It was somewhat interesting and I'm glad it's on the list, but I didn't really like it. Definitely won't be playing it again.
Two weeks is one of the songs of the decade. However the rest of it though interesting in parts is a little bit on the dull side. The vocals are treated and the arrangements are plodding. Much promise shown but only fleeting.
It’s the type of music they play at the expensive coffee shop. It’s not bad but the album just feels the same.
Boy I really do t like this type of music - sounds way too processed and artificial sounds and the voices are just way too processed. Also the mid and down tempo just drones on. Hard pass
Misphonia: The Album There is nothing here for me ⭐⭐
I think this is very of its time. I would say well done for effort but ultimately this is not very good. What's with all the background hammering noises etc? Kept turning down the volume to check if there was something making a noise outside that I should be dealing with somehow. Quite unsettling.
Ugh
I really enjoyed Eurasexual last year, so I was looking forward to diving into some of FKA twig’s earlier work! Unfortunately I found this really lacking. I’m all on board for weird, for experimental. But this just seemed kind of empty. A couple okay tracks but I forgot them as soon as they were done. Little to hold onto here.
i love the ethereal sounding parts, but then it always get ruined with this corny coworker 2014 sound. All in all, the album is a mixture of beautiful ethereal singing, bad shoegaze and annoying coworker music.
I actually feel bad for anyone who likes this.
Meh
Not for me.
Wanted to. Couldn’t. Trap. Ughhhh.
She's very good at singing but I don't know about this musically.
nah
Thought this would be better
Never have been a fan of this poppy r&b stuff.
Strike 4 this week! I apparently can't get a true classic that I would consider Must-Have-Listening. This was like one long song with no change in tempo or instrumentation. The listener counts are impressive across all 10 songs, ranging from 7M to 110M ("Two Weeks"). I've never heard of her, and not a peep since this came out 12 years ago. World's best kept secret? I don't think so. Super boring first two tracks, she doesn't sing as much as she whispers in your ear. "Lights On" has no structure, it's all over the place. Then on to the 'big hit' in "Two Weeks", it has an interesting sound but once was enough for me. "Numbers" is worthless, no meat on the bone. "Closer" is it's twin but more melodic, I guess. I nodded off between songs, holy shit this is boring. "Give Up" is exactly what I did. Every song seems to start out in the same sleepy manner, with a Kate Bush high pitch pixy voice. But Kate can sing and has range. FKA twigs is definitely not a compelling singer, I would assume she sucks live. No hooks, poor vocals, nothing to pull a user in, no distinguishable musical instruments outside a keyboard and drum machine. Utterly boring. This is millenial nonsense, I cannot relate at all to this nothing-sound she has created. Her schtick got old in a hurry. Is this what the kids listen to now? I truly feel sad for them. 2 stars, maybe just one. Wow, I didn't enjoy even a minute of this studio production project.
I should enjoy this music, because I typically enjoy Lofi and chill music, but it’s just not my style.
Started off not good… got better… still don’t like it
Not for me, very modern sounding for 2014 and it sounds like the whole album was done by one person on a laptop
Carried by Two Weeks, imho.
Repetitive and boring. I don't know why it's on this list. A 2, because it could be in any store in a shopping mall or in an elevator, nothing special about it would make me turn my head and listen carefully :-(
Nein. Sehr... :(
Bit more interesting and enjoyable than I remember. Breathy. Ultimately not really my vibe, though perhaps it deserves another listen.
I didn't get this. I really wanted to but i didn't
2 out of 5. Nice layering in her singing and her voice is too.
Not entirely my vibe but it was cool
yeah no
Whimpering vocal style is not my bag.
unlistenable
Liked: Preface Generally did not like the album. Not really my vibe and since I'm not familiar with other songs or artists with a similar sound, most of the songs sounded very similar to me. Was a bit difficult to get through.
Kirkland Björk
Don’t really get this tbh
Stand-out tracks: Two Weeks, Kicks Apart from the two tracks mentioned, this album wasn't anything particularly memorable or impressive to me. I can see that there were some attempts especially on the electronica side of things with making some interesting musical choices, but nothing really stuck with me. Most of the tracks end up feeling the same to me and the lyrics aren't anything to write home about either, mostly just the usual stuff. Considering how little of this album I actually liked, this definitely gets a below average rating.
Highlights: Lights On, Pendulum, Numbers First time listening to one of her records. I didn't expect such a horny aura. The overall impression is basically that it's Grimes but hornier and less pop sounding (even more abstract - yaaaay!) + a British accent. A bit too abstract and minimalist sounding for my taste. It was pretty early in its genre though, so it deserves some kudos for that. To be honest, I find it perplexing how people emotionally resonate with this music. This thought occurred to me while listening to Give Up (almost a highlight), but retroactively I realized this applies to the whole record and kinda the genre as a whole - where is the emotion in the vocals? It's always some high pitched voice on the verge of whispering with no change in emotional expression no matter the lyrical content of the track. I guess this ASMR style is ok when you use it in a couple of tracks, but when this is your flagship sound... And yes, it might resemble the narrative aspect of folk music, but even that is somewhat expressive compared to this deadpan and arrogant attempt to come off as artsy. I don't respect that. The record wasn't up my alley thematically nor sonically, so I won't be revisiting this record, but I do see a target audience for this existing. Whether I think highly of that audience's taste however is a completely different affair.
An album sadly in need of a rhythm section.
#849. This isn't even really good as background music. Her singing style really grates. 2/5: nope
Production is incredible but the tracks are hit and miss for me. Slightly too self indulgent
Interesting style but not my vibe
There’s some really interesting stuff going on with the production, especially in the back half, but the vast majority of listening to this is just minimalist pop BS.
she has a nice voice but i kept drifting off while listening to this, i did not hold my attention
Initially, I wasn't excited because I thought it was going to be meaningless pop diva over thin keyboards pop. But when it got started I raised some high hopes because I liked the glitchy electronica and half phrases. Sadly though, every song goes more and more towards the pop girl, thin keyboard vibe. Sad. Honestly, I couldn't even get through a second listen. I'll give it a 2 because it's not crap - It's just inconsequential.
No I didn’t like this at all.
I'll start by saying I am definitely not the target audience for FKA twigs. Sexual albums in general usually make me very uncomfortable, and adding repetitive wonky over-produced instrumentals on top of that doesn't really help get me into this one. LP1 feels like a record you claim to like in order to convince your friends you're deep and experimental, but not a degenerate. I'll hand it to the album, the production is certainly something. There are some tracks when the wonky-ness definitely works to some success, Pendulum and Numbers showcase what the production can do for this sound. Unfortunately it just kinda distracts from any other aspect of the album that I could even begin to enjoy. It feels weird for the sake of being weird, as opposed to having some purpose or direction to the weirdness like the obvious influence Björk. The album feels very performative, and I don't really get a whole lot of depth from it outside of "look at all the wacky electronic doodling around!" She doesn't have a bad voice, I actually think it complements the style quite well, but the album lacks cohesion and any sort of payoff to the abnormality. The runtime is spent just sort of floating in this repetitive, stagnant cloud of songs reminiscent of good Art Pop, but one deviation removed. Again, I am probably not the target audience for this, but I don't really understand the hype for this record in particular. Maybe for 2014 the production was progressive, but from a modern perspective LP1 sounds confused and immature.
I’m not a fan of FKA Twigs music. It’s a bit too out there for my liking. The vocals are strained. The music is tinny like it’s being made on a laptop with some plug in desktop speakers and is generally all over the place, which is probably the style, but it just doesn’t do it for me.
Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
Really didn’t like this. Like a more boring XX and I did not like her voice
Not for me
LP1 isn't as sexy as it wants you to think it is.
again. not up my ally. she has a good voice but just dont like the music.
Really just not my vibe
OK.
This feels like it's trying to be Bjork but doesn't quite have the magic.
Poundland Björk
obviously talented but not my thing 2/5
Avant pop, electronic, blips and blops Hours
I didn’t listen to this album when it came out, but I do remember it being very popular. I agree with other reviews that whatever enamored listeners back then did not appear to age well. This felt like mainstream bland pop tracks with weird sounds layer on top just for the sake of trying to be different. It was nothing more than ok and I don’t get the hype.
# Playlist Track - Give Up # Notes - I spent the entire album waiting for something interesting to happen, but it never did.
< the Beatles There's some interesting vibes here but overall just not for me
All sounded the same and very Electronica
2 1/2
I like her voice, but that's about it. The songs don't really seem to go anywhere. I didn't care for this album.
Not really my thing...
This sounds to me like a soundtrack to a show that I would not like.
This was... fine, I really don't have much to say about it, it felt very generic and I can't say I cared much about it either way. I'm really unsure why this would be in any list of albums you must, it's not bad per se, just not good. 46/100
Found it very boring, insgnificant. Didn't think much of it at all. Not unpleasant, just background music.
I’ve tried on multiple occasions to get into FKA Twigs’ music, but I just haven’t been successful. Maybe it’s just not for me. This sounds like the background music used in fragrance commercials. I liked Two Weeks, but could probably leave most of this.
Kokeellista elektronista poppia. Vähän erikoiset instrut, vaikka ne toki erottaa tän perus popista. En varsinaisesti tykännyt yksittäisistä kappaleista kauheesti ja kokonaisuutenakin aika sekava. Parhaat: Video Girl, Closer
Did not like this one at all. Best way I can describe it is “electronica hipster Doja Cat.” The vocal style she uses, a high-pitched permanent breathless whisper, really got old quickly. The minimalist beats with industrial noises in the background did not help things either. Very little I enjoyed on this album. I almost want to give it a 1, but it’s not as bad as the other seven that I’ve given that score, so it will get the lowest 2/5 I can give.
This was just kinda of a waste. Didn’t hear anything notable on this. Moody droning monotone at least it could have been packed with emotion, I didn’t get anything.
Music for weepy, self-indulgent individuals who identify as they/them. Decent voice, but oh so boring.
Liked the first half the first time I heard it but when I came back to it this didn't really do much for me at all.
Not aimed at me
It started better than it finished. A couple of nice tracks that showed promise but overall probably not something I’d seek out again.
An odd album, a bit edgy in places but mainly drab pop.
It’s not terrible, in fact quite enjoyable to start, but the fragile voice thing and the quite repetitive cold and stark backing track tricks, while probably it’s USP, makes it very dull and uninviting very quickly for me.
Quirky, atmospheric and low energy...but definitely not my jam...
Anstrengend.
creepy ngl, kinda demented
Borders on tedious
Really not my thing
Meh, every song sounded the same and this didn’t do much for me. The singer has a nice voice at times but everything feels overproduced and lacking soul. Seems like the type of thing a rich white kid in the burbs with a high powered laptop could put together. Slightly intriguing but certainly not essential.
R&B tries to make itself more interesting by including electronic burbling and glitches. Fails. Best Tracks: Two Weeks; Pendulum; Video Girl
Pendulum and Closer are cool I guess but the rest is just blah
I don’t get this. It also sounds very repetitive. Top track: “Two Weeks”
Despite being old and grumpy, I really like the production on this album. Every sound and beat sounds clear, clean and distinct. And she’s got a good voice. I just don’t like this kind of music, and after listening through the entire album, I can’t remember a single song.
Lovely voice but a little falsetto goes a long way and this was way too much. Sounds like the music was created on Apple’s Garage Band or some other DAW.
I can appreciate that she’s talented but this was boring to me
Didn't finish.
I couldn’t agree more that I kept hearing Björk and Portishead and Kate Bush. It was all very ethereal and evocative but it seemed like the summer of its parts added up to less than the whole. I felt distinctly underwhelmed.
Overproduced and disjointed
It sounds like songs sung for hamsters. Is this hamster music?
Ethereal and everything 20-teens. The slacker, cozy, mumble vibes that slacked through that era. It’s pretty and lush, but ultimately is hollow. A sugary-sweet facade.
Favourite track: Kicks
Fine, but I miss real drums
It’s not my thing. Reminds me of Björk
I don’t know what feels like it’s missing on this, but it definitely feels it’s missing something - action? Motion? The sounds seem like they should add up to something more than they do.
Favorite tracks: Lights On, Video Girl, Give Up
Deeply unpleasant noise
Snyggt men tråkigt. En tvåa
Didn't really click with me
Makes me think of Ellie Golding’s first album, but not as listenable.
Very ethereal sounding. The style is different but it reminds me of Bjork. Didn't care for it.
Best Track - "Two Weeks"
It is an interesting album, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is good. Hard to track at times, and is filled with the manic attention span of the modern world. 2/5 Won't listen again
Laboratory made music that gives you motion sickness
Ethereal pop
The production here was interesting and reminded me a bit of Bjork or early Grimes, but I just find FKA Twigs so boring. I feel like this music is specifically made for you to look at some disgusting Urban Decay lipsticks that are all broken or covered with the snot of an 8 year old and there's unflattering cold LED lighting and faint sound of a gay guy going "Hi, let us know if you need help finding anything" every 15 seconds behind you. I know these breathy whispery vocals were unusual at the time and didn't sound like retail music when it came out, but it's still just pretty boring.
The first time I heard this, I thought it was the horniest thing I'd ever heard. Second time, utter desperation. In both cases, raw and unfiltered. It feels like a tone poem set to sparse trap beats. She is clearly skilled at singing, though she chooses to breathe most of her lyrics. I'm not sure we'd have gotten the same Billie Eilish if not for this offering years prior. The intimacy and privacy of thoughts shared draws the listener into the music unlike most other albums. With all that said, this album revolved around a neurotic, clingy, passionate, unapologetic person swimming in their thoughts. It's not particularly comfortable listening when I'm not going through something similar, but I can imagine it gives voice to these thoughts and feelings for those that resonate with it.
Bit if a slog to be honest
This was weird and not in a good way.
I like FKA twigs but all the songs on the album blended together
Not for me, it is not something unique or special (to my ears) and I'm frankly confused as to why it is on this list. For other albums I did not like I could see the attraction or uniqueness, not for this one.
Didn't touch the sides. I think Jonny has an ironic playlist of this sort of stuff. Seems quite early, so maybe this was groundbreaking in 2014?
Meh
Meh - a little boring, Grimes-y
nope, didn't get this one at all who is this girl again?
I think I can say that this is not my type of music, but I will at least recognize the production was pretty impressive. It sounded coherent at times and then messy/jumbled - at least to my ears - other times. I'm going with a High 2 here.
This is one and done. A bad Kate Bush imitator.
Nah. She's got a high register voice that is clean, but her music does nothing for me
