Big BOOBA

I like how they said, "fuck it, we're going medieval" two thirds into this album. Bryan Ferry you crazy fuck, I know you write music just so you have an artistic reason to look at tits. Didn't even realize this is post-Brian Eno, because it sounds so much like his early work. Understand why he left though. Can't have two guys named Brian in a band with slightly different name spellings, that's like some Luigi and Waluigi shit.

Pretty good album, started off amazingly, with a masterpiece of The Thrill of it All. Great song, easily best on the record. Rock of the highest level, guitar solos, maybe not complicated, but fit perfectly into the tune and the feeling of the song. The rest of the album afterwards slowly turns into a generic pop album, only with few rare moments of the first, glorious song. Vocal sounds like in every English 70s and 90s pop bands, so pretty common, but quite pleasant. Overall, memory of the opening song cannot allow me to give it any lower rating than 4,regardless of the other songs.

Enjoyed this album, ended up adding out of the blue to my liked playlist.

Fantastic. Roxy Music at their best. With a personal favourite, The thrill of it all and then classics like Out of the Blue and Casanova

A strong album which belies it’s age

Coming in with some bangers here. Not big enough to really bop to, but there was definitely some substance. Not too long, good bit of range, original, unique. I enjoyed the instrumentation, lyrics, vocals, and album as a whole honestly. 4/5

Great Art Rock, all over the place stylistically. Good production, excellent musicians.

Pretty good listen

B+ The Thrill Of It All 4 Three And Nine 5 All I Want Is You 3 Out Of The Blue 5 If It Takes All Night 3 Bitter-Sweet 5 Triptych 4 Casanova 3 A Really Good Time 3 Prairie Rose 3 Such an amazing album. I only listened to this as a kid because of the cover art but I was blown away by the music, and I still am.

This was a Roxy Music album I finaly enjoyed. Enough diverse interest to be worth the time

This list has been a pleasant reminder of how much I love Roxy Music - pre- and post-Eno.

This is probably the best Roxy Music I've heard, and I'm not sure why. It's the same lineup. I think the big thing i the vocals. Bryan Ferry seems a lot more polished in the vocals, I guess. Maybe they just didn't rub me the wrong way like they did other times, I just dug them more. So 2 out of the 3 releases we've heard I have liked. I really don't know why I didn't like Roxy Music when I first heard them, but they never clicked with me. I think the best of I had at one time was a combo them and Bryan Ferry stuff, but songs like "Prairie Rose" really stuck with me. Top tracks: "Prairie Rose," "The Thrill Of It All," "Three and Nine"

The first couple of times through the album I didn't think this album was anything special. Just an ordinary 3. But I will admit on the third or fourth listen I was quite impressed by the whole glam sound. I know they're considered art rock but this had a bit more T Rex or Sparks sound to it. At least side one with their two singles - All I Want is You and The Thrill of it All (some real rock edge from the guitar work) - and Out of the Blue. Side one was great and Bryan Ferry has a perfect voice for this kind of thing - so expressive. That being said, I found side two dragged a bit, except for Prairie Rose. Maybe my favorite Roxy Music album so far of the three that have come up on this list, feels like it's about a 3.5. Coin flip on rounding up or down. It's their lucky day.

Awesome album but there are a couple skips in here.

Quite radical, honestly. Hair metal mixed with classic rock. Really good!

Shimmering glam rock with elements of avant-garde, Bryan Ferry’s quivering vocals and undeniable energy dominate.

Roxy music with less art and more rock, but the quality standard is still intact. Groovy

I was expecting another The Slits with that cover, but this one actually goes kind of hard

Not my favourite Roxy Music album but still full of enjoyable songs

Don’t know this one. Let’s go! Good shit 4 stars so far. Rocking start Enjoying this few songs in. Nice seasoning of saxophone, possible flute? and harmonica. Got a piano going on. The vocal delivery isn’t my favorite but he can sing fine for what’s being attempted It’s like the vocal inflections are over delivered. Like a cruise ship singer. See: out of the blue. An upbeat foot tapper of a song but that vocal delivery doesn’t fit. I think part of the ‘issue’ is they’re a little forward in the mix as well. At least compared to modern mixes Bitter sweet lol this is getting a bit operatic. Like Jason seagal’s vampire rockopera Tryptich is that a harpsichord? Probably synth I’d assume but baroque wasn’t expected. More operatic This album kinda falls flat second half, huh? Wrap up with a bit more of what made the first half more listenable. What the hell was the middle of this album? So strange. I really liked it up to Bitter Sweet

Not what I was expecting. Enjoyed it! Lots of different styles blended on 1 album 4 ⭐️

I found this gem in with my dad's promotional records from his time in the music business. Very memorable cover, but I never listened to it until just now. I enjoyed it.

Classic.

I've always been indifferent to Roxy Music. Well, more than that, I've never really liked the band, mostly because I've never been able to warm up to Bryan Ferry. But, I appreciated the band on this listen a lot more than expected. Ferry still has the capacity to annoy, but there's a lot going on here I liked, and he was much less of a hindrance than anticipated. I'll even admit to liking a lot of what I heard. So, while I may not reach for this for sheer pleasure, I've found a new understanding for what the band is all about.

God, I love Roxy Music. Sophisticated, lyrical, catchy, powerful, fun... and killer musicians to boot. They're the whole package. Having said that, this is one band where I'd choose different albums than the ones the authors of the book chose. This album has some of their best songs, but it's never been my fave. There aren't any duds on here, per se, but I enough songs that are OK that I can't bring myself to give it a 5. But you can really hear how these guys inspired Duran Duran on this one.

This album art is even worse for the office than the Basement Jaxx one. I can't imagine how that went over in the 70s. I've never listened to this band much, but I know Brian Eno used to be in it. I was curious to hear what art rock sounded like in the 70s. The vocals and guitarwork are pretty unorthodox. I like the driving rhythms on the opener. They really took the song name "Bitter Sweet" to heart. I really enjoyed "Triptych" with it's usual instruments. The instrumentation throughout the album is pretty rockin' but some of the songs don't have very strong vocal melodies.

Great album! Not much to say, no song really stood out that much so it was hard to pick a favorite but I liked them all. Favorite song: Out of the Blue 7/10

Got to learn more about Brian Eno with this one! I enjoy the vocals, I like when he sweeps into the low notes. It's an interesting combination of styles at times, like it can have Elvis-like vocals with heavy electric guitars? Followed by evil German showtunes? I can hear how they influenced MGMT. I like the wide range of instruments. Top songs: The thrill of it all A really good time

Started off a bit generic. But I really started to enjoy it when it got a bit weirder with Bitter Sweet and Triptych.

Roxy Music 3/3 Is the top comment going to be about the album cover? Edit: yes Funny that this is the Eno-less of the three, since songs like “Triptych” wouldn’t sound out of place on Eno’s Here Come the Warm Jets. If there’s one reason for having so much Roxy Music on this list, it’s the adventurousness that they explore genres and their influences, even if it has been somewhat hit & miss (I remembered being slightly baffled by For Your Pleasure, early on in this journey). Like, just when I thought I knew their bag of tricks, along comes the funky “Casanova” and twisted march of “Bitter-Sweet”. I promised myself once this album came and went, I’d finally crack open my mom’s copy of Avalon (1982), “credited with pioneering the sophisti-pop genre” (Wikipedia). And I know how much this list loves sophisti-pop, so not having that on here seems particularly strange. But that’s for another night 🥱 got to be up early for first aid class HL: “The Thrill of it All”, “Out of the Blue”, “Bitter-Sweet”?, “Triptych” April 10, 2024

Nice album

A pretty mixed bag: 3 or 4 really good tracks, while the rest is rather middling and more than a bit self-indulgent in the way one expects from Bryan Ferry.

This is an absolutely brilliant record.

Brilliant stuff

Lots of songs on here that could be on a 5 record but a few that hold it back. Overall a really good record that I listen to a few times a year.

I really enjoyed this album, which was new to me. Experimental, but great rocking songs. Like Bowie, but different. Favourite tracks, Bitter Sweet & Casanova.

2nd best RM

Much better than the other Roxy music album I’ve had so far in ‘For Your Pleasure’. ‘Country Life’ rocks with songs that are melodic, and full of hooks. Even when things get a bit avant-garde in the middle, things remain interesting. This was way more like what I expected to hear from a much lauded group like Roxy Music.

I enjoyed it. It’s a mood. I could come back to it.

Had never heard of this band before but really solid album! Good old fashioned rock with some prog elements thrown in. Just a good time overall, no one particular song blew me away but I was enjoying my way through the whole thing. Wild cover art to open in public though lol

Top baroque prog pop/rock

This has grown on me. Thinking of it as Eno art-rock instead of pop has helped. It sounds great. I can't think of much else to say about it. Sorry.

Not entertaining at first but when you actually listen its good as fuck. Rollings tones vibes is the word on second thought

4.0 - What I’ve gathered about Brian Eno through this listening exercise is that he tends to dominate most collaborations. “Low” sounds more Eno than Bowie. Similarly with some of his Talking Heads work. So, Roxy Music without Eno, while still amazing, is missing something for me. I miss Eno’s insane fireworks from Roxy’s first couple records. Still, this is a great record — actually, the songwriting overall is better. But Eno of this era always sprinkles that extra pixie dust. Standouts: the last three tracks.

very fun rock with lots of different stuff going on

Vibin with this mf thang fr

Really weird and interesting album. Liked it more than I thought I would. Will have to check out more of their stuff.

There is plenty to admire in the collection. Every member gets a fair shot to shine. Less experimental than earlier work with probably more control to create a consistent sound, albeit one with many levels.

Excited to listen to this… The album cover didn’t disappoint. Played this shit back twice. 4 but could be a future 5 well see

Fun album. Definitely one I want to sit down again and listen to with headphones. Glam rock without all the camp. Just strong musicians and vocals to match.

Ok so overall I really liked this album it was really nice to listen to. The guitar was nice and not monochromatic (unlike Back in Black), and the guys voice was nice to listen to (unlike Bob Dylan). I also liked the stylistic changeup after the chorus in the first song it kept it interesting and lively. I really liked the last song it was really solid had a fun feel to it. The only real critique I have is the cover art, which while not as bad as some of Jane's Addiction cover art, is still not something I would like to have a poster of in my room.

Pretty good, many different sounds, from medieval pop to blues, not what I expected.Bryan Ferry is a very capable frontman. Some really cool guitar stuff.

Yeah! They took their pants off!

The only thing I knew about this band and album was that I had seen the album cover before. While listening I kept asking myself, "What is this music?" It was different. It was unusual. It was quirky but it was interesting and it was kind of clicking with me. I'd listen to more of this.

Got better as it went along

so close to a five but i just don’t have that five feeling. More Than This is a six song. Noticed Sparks sounds this round of listening.

J’ai passer dedans sans m’en rendre compte, ca doit être bon

Sneaky good – and much more directly rocking than one expected/recalled. Not sure the songs pay off the cover. "Thrill Of It All," "Out of the Blue," and "Prairie Rose" are top cuts.

Some how I have gone through life without listening to Roxy Music until now. I would regret not having had them being part of me except I now have an exciting your ey ahead of me.

This is a great album with a lot of range. It has melancholic songs like Bitter Sweet to epic rock songs like Out Of The Blue. The compositions and writing is amazing. The instrumentation is impressive and unconventional, too. Not the best lyrics though.

The Thrill of It All- 3.7/5 Three and Nine- 4.3/5 All I Want Is You- 4.2/5 Out of the Blue- 3.9/5 If It Takes All Night- 4.3/5 Bitter-Sweet- 5/5 Triptych- 4.6/5 Casanova- 4.8/5 A Really Good Time- 4.8/5 Prairie Rose- 3.6/5 Total- 4.3/5

Fun listen

Really enjoyed the album, entertaining throughout. Inappropriate cover for work listening. Favs: "Thrill of it All", "3 & 9", "If It Takes All Night" & "Casanova" **Side note from the album here: Of the 149 albums I've listen to so far only 13 or so have been women... I am sick of listening to men at this stage, very little variety in the list. There must be more albums out there, especially international ones that deserve to be here, I have seen 2 Bob Dylan albums so far, 3 Metallica, 2 Pink Floyd.... enough. It's taking the enjoyment out of it.

Great album from one of the best glam bands ever.

Som legal, nem parece setentista, rock despojado

It was a good album, I liked Bitter sweet, A Really Good Time and Prairie Rose the best.

A very good album that can be listened to over and over again, but what is interesting about compared to other "classic albums" of that era is that there aren't any particularly stand-out popular songs. It isn't like listening to, say, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John, and then you realize there are a lot of "big and popular" songs on there but also the lesser-known stuff is great. In this case, everything is "lesser known" but that doesn't take away from the quality of it.

It's barely a 4. First half all sounded the same, though it did still sound decent. Second half was an improvement. Not amazing, but good. My favourite song was Bitter Sweet.

Great but short album.

Not one that I had listened to in full before. But I really do like Roxy Music, the more I listen

Roxy Music strays further and further from their glam rock roots with a more sophisticated and creative artsy sound. There are still many definitively glam tracks, like "All I Want Is You", but there are plenty that barely have any semblance to what they were. Instead, their work almost predicts New Wave music with the confident yet punk-like melodic approach. It's a pleasant listen with an outstanding 70s production covering a sound that had yet to exist. Tracks move by fast, and they nail hit after hit with their innovative ideas. For Your Pleasure was based around an eery mood, and Avalon would be atmospheric and loungey, but this covers everywhere in between while still being consistent. The songs transition smoothly. Sure, the difference in sounds between some successive tracks can be a bit dramatic, but it never comes off harshly, especially with the low-key vibe in many songs that draw your attention. Main weakness is the second side doesn't stand out as much, with the first side holding most of the energy and wild noises. But it's just as creative and smart. Favorites: The Thrill of It All, Out of the Blue, Triptych

Roxy Music's early albums were unique and all worth a listen, but Country Life might just be their best album. The opening track, The Thrill Of It All, should be a part of everyone's soundtrack to their life, is probably my favourite song from the band and the rest of the album is solid throughout. I've always been a bit iffy about Brian Ferry as a vocalist, but here he proves to more than up for the challenge. As far as the album cover, track down the original pressing, no one wants to look at a photo of just a pine tree.

Pretty dope

Class album, very smooth

Terug naar Rock, vooruit dan maar. De eerste nummer springt er wel direct uit als wat anders. Een bijna orchestraal epos dat ook direct 6,5 minuut duurt. Het album is uberhaupt veelzijdig, met een volledig blues nummer als If It Takes All Night. Benieuwd wat onze Yoni daar van vindt. Favorieten: The Thrill Of It All, Prairie Rose

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would

I wasnt sure at the start (altho the opener is great) but this album really picked up and i really liked it! Special shoutout to the production.

Groovy as hell. Well enjoyed. Loved Casanova

Yeah really good, understand the Bryan Ferry hype

for me a very enjoyable album. liked it alot

Great album, cool hybrid rock and roll

This was really cool. I haven't heard about them before, but I really liked most of it.

Great album!

Good art-rock, but not as good as another album from this book, For Your Pleasure, which I’ve listened to before. The songs are still great, with me enjoying the first two and last one specifically. It’s not as good as that album, but listen to it if you liked their other music. (I’ll probably articulate my thoughts on the band better once that or maybe their self-titled come around).

There's a sleek and stylish sound here, and the album transports listeners to a world of luxurious escapism. "The Thrill of It All" really kicks things off with a guitar forward Bowie-esque entry of glam and rock. The iconic cover art sets the tone as well, but the album does hit a slight low point with "Bitter-Sweet" and "Triptych." Those two tracks feel like part of some other Baroque album that was in the works. Bryan Ferry is such a catch vocalist to me, and the innovative arrangements create an irresistible atmosphere that's both sophisticated and groovy.

An Album that has aged incredibly well. I haven’t listened to any other Roxy Music output, but I was a bit afraid going into this considering this was a post-Eno album, and I hold his work in very very high regard. But, my fears were instantly quelled with the impeccable run of opening tracks. All of it just sounds so sleek, expertly crafted, and well performed. Definitely still had creative juice even without Eno and it definitely showed. The first 3 tracks were my favorites, with a bit of a momentum dip at the end, but it was at the least consistently good. Definitely will be an album I’ll be revisiting.

Decent 8

Me gustó eeeh. No lo tenia

Probably would give it a 3 but the album cover bumps it up to a 4

Bitter Sweet reminded me of Nightmare Before Christmas. I like the dude's voice a lot. A cool variety of instruments as well. I would definitely listen to this album again.

I opened up the album 1 second before my coworker walked by so they almost got a face full of boobs on the album cover First song was a jam but was quite different than all of the other songs so I didn't really know what was coming next each song. I can't remember which one it was but the song where they were speaking German or something was spooky. I liked the album and it makes me want to check out more Roxy music.

This first song is a bop. Kinda gives me Bowie vibes. This is a fun album! I listened to their album “Roxy Music” a bunch this past year cuz I went through an Eno phase but I’m glad to expand on this. It’s like a mix between Bowie and Talking Heads. Going to listen to all the Roxy Music albums now brb

Loved this. Great production, and sounds - really surprised they aren't more populat.

bien mdr

somehow leads the way for post-punk even though it was released pre-punk

oh geez, should it be 5?

I’ve tried to get into Roxy Music a couple of times but never really cared for them, so my god was this a pleasant surprise. It’s baffling this came out in 1974, some of the production and Ferry’s vocal affectations sound so distinctly 80s. The range of genres this covers is ridiculous and it’s just a lot of fun

Art rock. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

I’ve never quite known what to make of Roxy Music and after finally listening to one of their albums I still don’t. I’m usually all for bands with a bit of experimental flair, but some of Roxy’s musical voyages seem to be to places I’m not particularly fussed about visiting myself, if that makes sense. On my first listen through I did enjoy a lot of the tracks but couldn’t remember much about them afterwards... I’m on my fourth listen now and it’s finally starting to make sense. Most of these songs are bangers - it’s only really Bitter Sweet that doesn’t quite work for me.

Before today, I'd never heard of Roxy Music before, so I was unsure what I was in for. Upon further research, I learned that they are somewhere between Talking Heads and David Bowie. Upon listening to the album, that is a quite accurate description. The lyrics are largely nonsensical, which is very similar to Talking Heads, while the music is jazzy/rockin' which is very similar to Bowie. Also, the album cover has boobs on it, so that's a plus as well! Lol Overall, a great album. Surprised how much I liked it. There were a few odd songs on the record, but overall, a really solid album! I enjoyed it so much, I listened to it twice today. Favorite songs: If It Takes All Night, Out of the Blue, All I Want Is You, The Thrill of it All, Three and Nine, Prairie Rose, Casanova Least favorite songs: Bitter Sweet, Triptych 4/5

This album was a major step up from their self-titled one. The potential on the first album is realized here, as the instrumentation really comes together nicely. Favorite track: All I Want is You

This was a great listen. It's really all over the place musically and I like that but the vocals weren't my favourite. That probably reduced my overall enjoyment of it. Otherwise it's a great listen that definitely doesn't sound like it was made in 1974.

Really weird and cool rock, feels much more modern than it is

In general I really liked it but there’s something about his singing that drags it down a little. Still great though 4/5.

Upon seeing this album, my first thought was "there is too much Roxy Music on this list." I think this is the 3rd Roxy Music album I've encountered in 134 total generated albums. From the jump, this one felt different. It could be that it's more traditional/accessible pop, or it could be that by their 4th album, they really hit their stride. In either case, I'm happy to be proven wrong and having taken a step towards conversion to a fan. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Standouts: The Thrill Of It All, All I Want Is You, Out Of The Blue, A Really Good Time, Prairie Rose

Great album cover, pretty good album. Could definitely feel Bowie and the Beatles in here.

Muy bien, qué gran cosa los '70, gracias a este sitio estoy haciéndome fan. Muy buen disco.

It was great! I really liked it. A lot of cool sounds coming from the album. 8/10

Art rock. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

CLASSIC

Reminded me of Bowie. A solid listen all the way through.

Classic, with some duds.

I remember hiding this album in my bedroom when I was a kid if about 5. Perhaps I enjoyed the baps as much as my dad... Parents though this was hilarious. Discovering Bryan Ferry was the lead in this band was news to me. I've never really investigated the art rock of Roxy Music before. Refreshing and new for the first listen through. When the mood strikes me, I will return.

The third (and surely last?) Roxy album I’ve gotten on this list, and all in chronological order. I can undoubtedly say that, having never listened to any of these records, I have a new found appreciation for Roxy Music’s work, and this album is definitely my favourite. It tempers a lot of the goofier/esoteric elements of previous record, and from its rip roaring opener it never really lets up, save for a brief detour into quirky baroque prog rock on “Triptych”. Eno’s absence here is not necessarily a bad thing (I never felt like his bits really meshed with the rest of the band) and Phil Manzaneras more than fills his shoes. The closer “Prairie Rose” is a fantastic example of how Roxy effortlessly eschewed genre boundaries and tastes to make something really their own, and even if I can’t say this is a perfect album, it’s definitely a great one. Plus, boobs.

I tried to listen to Roxy Music years and years ago, and it didn't do anything for me, but I must have listened to the wrong album because I really liked this! Close to a 5

Thought I would hate this based on the album cover, but it was actually pretty dece.

This is a really solid album. I'm a Roxy Music fan, somewhat of a casual fan but definitely like a lot of their music. I've spent some time with this album before but it had been a little while. I wouldn't say it has any of their bigger hits on it but a strong album throughout. Standout Tracks: The Thrill of It All, Three and Nine, Out of the Blue, Casanova, A Really Good Time, Prairie Rose

What a banger and yes does remind me of J Cress getting the wrong record in Brighton. It didn't matter cos he only wanted it for the cover OI OI!

I remember this album being around. I don’t recognize any songs but do remember the album cover. I would have been around thirteen when the album came out so I suppose the cover being memorable isn’t surprising. The album has some rockers and also has some story telling songs that remind me of early Kinks albums. The rockers All I Want is You, Casanova and Prairie rose are highlights. A solid 3 1/2. I’m not rounding up for the cover. Well maybe.

This reminds me a bit of Aladdin Sane which came out around that time, with a couple of singles like "the thrill of it all" and "all I want is you" a few art rock ballads like those that start side 2, plus some straight ahead rock and roll numbers. With Bryan Eno out of the picture the other musicians like Jobson on strings, Mackay on sax and especially Phil Manzanera on guitar take center stage. "Out of the Blue" is a track that's about 10 years ahead of its time, not necessarily due to the fazing which is very seventies, but with it's baseline and dance-ability it could be a future new wave hit. The most consistent of the RM albums we've received.

I think I slightly prefer the first two Roxy albums that featured Brian Eno - where their songs had a harder "edge" to them. But this album starts out with a real banging sizzler - The Thrill of it all, which I think is one of their very best songs. Out of the Blue is another cracker and Eddie Jobson shows that he's also a great keyboard/synth player and more than a capable replacement for Eno. The line-up is also super talented, with guys that went on to make waves on their own - Phil Manzanera on guitars and Andy Mackay on oboe/sax and Paul Thompson on drums. There's a slight turn in their sound after Eno departed, but they're now forging a new path that's more proggy and also laying the groundwork for glam/new wave bands like Duran Duran, Ultravox and Human League. In the early 70s Roxy's only competition in the glam/prog rock arena was David Bowie who released killer albums like Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory during this time. But I would say these two bands were the undisputed kings of this era.

I love glam rock. This album may be the most campy album I’ve ever listened to. Definitely has banger material

Good album to make if you've just done a lot of cocaine. Good album to listen to if you've also just done a lot of cocaine.

This is my favorite album that I haven’t heard before on this generator. I think I’m not going to give a 5 to any albums that I haven’t heard before, but this might become a 5 in the future. I don’t have much to say about the music, but I liked almost all of the songs.

Rock. Pop.

my father had bought me a roxy music cd regardless of the fact that i had never heard them before but at least i now have an excuse to do so, right? the album was surprisingly good and i don’t think i was bored for a second throughout it. my favorite songs were: The Thrill Of It All, Three And Nine, All I Want Is You, Out Of The Blue, Bitter Sweet, A Really Good Time, and Prairie Rose.

I honestly can not tell you why I’ve never listened to Roxy Music until today. It’s my preferred genre of music in general, I’ve been aware of them for many years, I’ve even had friends who loved them. And yet, I never thought to listen to them myself. Bit odd, that, innit? Songs I already knew: none Favourites: The Thrill Of It All, Out Of The Blue I really enjoyed this album! I was expecting rock music, but I wasn’t expecting it to sound quite like it does. They have great use of the traditional rock instruments, but also the occasional nice sax riffs. They sometimes lean a little into the more operatic experimental side of music, but never jarringly so - it never grates, and is always still close enough to expectations to never lose where the music is actually going. After listening, I definitely feel somewhat silly for leaving it this long to try out Roxy Music.

All new, to me, and a lot of good stuff. Makes me want to go on an exploration of their catalog.

J'ai fait deux écoute, la première na pas été complete et la deuxième en travaillant. J'ai bien aimé mais j'ait rouvé leur album For your pleasure mieux en terme de disque. Cependant celui-ci est mieux balancé je crois. 4

A really interesting, eclectic, listen. I like that Bryan Ferry isn't formulaic in the songwriting. This is an album that I could probably listen to many times and hear something different every single time.

Nice pop album. Easy to listen to. I might check out more of their albums later.

Roxy Country Music Life

Great 4th Album from El Ferarri and Roxy. Moving from Art House cult band to mainstream Rockers. I like "The Thrill Of It" the Nostalgic "Three and Nine" and the Banging "All I want Is You". Not the Best album from the first round Roxy but it is a positive addition to this list.

Not necessarily my cup of tea, but super interesting and ahead of its time.

First track on the album was really good. A lot of the rest didn't stand out/wasn't as memorable but overall I enjoyed the experience.

Great feel good album

I love Roxy. Not their best, but Country Life is easily a 4...

I really enjoyed the a-side of this album. Never heard of this band before but kind of a great example why I wanted to do this album activity. Will definitely seek out some of this bands other hits.

Leuke muziek, maar vond het niet super speciaal

Good that, loads going on throughout.

Enjoyable for sure, but missed some of the stuff I like from their other albums.

Roxy Music, always a fun listen.

Funny booby and good guitar

-Crazy rhythm section to open up "The Thrill Of It All" -"Out of the Blue" has some cool, bass riffs and hi-hat grooves. Also the shrieky guitar is cool -"Bitter Sweet" has a both a Halloween-y camp feel and a more spooky, Alice Cooper-like style -"Casanova" has an almost funk-like groove going on -A solid album with a bunch of solid tracks. I should do more listening

I love this first phase of Roxy Music (with and without Eno). Art rock that actually rocks. I was not familiar with this particular record, but I really enjoyed it. This is going on my "to buy" list.

overall good vibes on this album.

Solid album

Could sense some Bowie-ism in here, overall enjoyed and will add some songs to regular listens. Album cover helps too ;)

Sounds as fresh today as the day it was released - classic, must download

This was lovely, thoroughly enjoyed it and got better on the second listen. Standout track for me was Out of the Blue

I was introduced to Roxy Music when their debut album popped up a few weeks back, and it blew me away. I gave it a four at the time, but now I'm thinking I should have gone the whole five stars because while it's maybe a less well-rounded album than "Country Life," the songs I like are better. Nonetheless, I can't see myself giving this fewer than four stars. "If It Takes All Night" is probably my favorite track, with "All I Want Is You" and "A Really Good Time" rounding out the top three (Or maybe "Out of the Blue" deserves to supplant one of them? Hard to say). What can I say, other than that Roxy Music's been the biggest gem 1001 Albums has introduced me to so far.

Roxy Music will always get a 4 or 5 from me

This was great rock album to listen to. Especially the opening and closing songs are flaming, but I'm quite taken by the stranger songs like Bitter-sweet. Definitely an album that will stay in my playlists

áhugavert

Dodgy sleeve aside, classic upmarket Glam Rock.

Got a little tedious

A classic album with the classic roxy Music sound. Bryan Ferry's voice is an acquired taste but there is no denying the stellar song writing on this album. 4 stars

I did not expect to like this album nearly as much as I did. I'm only really familiar with Roxy Music's big hits, most of which are a lot later. Genres can set up weird expectations. I thought this would be glam rock, and I guess it's most accurately characterized as art rock, but to me this is a really excellent prog rock album. Super interesting musically and goes into all sorts of weird and unexpected places (Soaring electric violin solos! Medieval harpsichord! Oompa band!) And holy shit, what a great rocker Casanova is!

Have floated around Roxy all this time but never truly dove in for whatever reason. Daft because I would clearly love it. This is one of the albums I've never even listened to once. Well, this is great. Thrill of it all, and Out of the Blue, both superb. The whole last half of the album.

it alright. 4 star :)

The 70's were a weird time.

Though long aware of the sleeve art's notoriety, I was fully expecting some more of the glam peacocking of For Your Pleasure, but arrived at much more introspective tunes, lush strings and a very different vocal style.

Great early Roxy, delightful and off beat

Country Life is an intricate and classy album by the 70s British rock band Roxy Music. Bryan Ferry, the lead singer / songwriter, has a very unique singing style. You will hear great guitar work by Phil Manzanera and how many rock bands have a resident oboeist (Andy Mackay)? Cool Album!

what an album cover that is. Album is decent too.

8/10. Roxy Music doesn't disappoint, though it never blows me entirely away either.

It’s Roxy Music. Kinda weird, pretty decent, never great. 7/10

Pretty funky, I liked it

I enjoyed this one! Great energy and performances.

Great album

Great music, not a fan of the album artwork!

Good one

Lost my notes again. In short, frontman is a great songwriter and the band can keep up. Also, not country music.

Something drew me to this album...can't quite put my finger on twat it was though

Very enjoyable to listen to; favorite songs: Three and Nine and Out of the Blue

Caught by surprise yet again and based on my previous Roxy albums this is a solid 4. I quite enjoyed this with Cassanova being the standout and a lot of highlights along the way.

Very solid and enjoyable. Songs are varied, layered, and have a great rock energy. Casanova, Out of the Blue are some of the most enjoyable. Bitter-Sweet and Triptych are a little strange, but still have their positive aspects.

Liked it alot more than I liked the Last Roxy Music Album. Pretty solid.

its very artsy alternative rock, reminds me a lot of steely dan

First time listening to a Roxy music album. Really enjoyed this good mix of catchy and weird songs and a mix of types of music, I assumed this was an 80’s album even more impressive it came out in 1974 clearly ahead of its time.

Broad, sprawling epic album.

This is the third album from Roxy Music that I get on this list and it's very impressive how different they are from each other. This one it's absolutely the best one. Very sharp melodies and good experimentation without loss of quality on the songs where they are more "classic". I probably need to go back and listen to again "Roxy Music" and "For Your Pleasure", just to check if I lost something the first time because this band really rocks (apparently)!

Very good, top guitar work and not as arty or as wanky as I expected it to be!

Reading about this album introduces me to the genre title “British art-rock”, of which I have heard before with David Bowie, The Smiths, etc. This is the first I’ve listened to Roxy Music. I enjoy the combination of distorted guitar sounds and punk influence in these more traditional types of written songs. “Out of the Blue” stuck with me as a standout track, really improving on all the things that make this record great.

Another one of those albums I really didn’t expect. So good!

Superb.

Roxy Music sets the bar for the 80s sound with this album.

overall good sound. Don't like the temptation of the album cover.

POP! ART!! POP ART!! Rushing headlong through a glamorama, Ferry is gloriously arch in front of a wonderful backdrop of sounds

As good as the two Eno Roxy albums are, the next two after he left are better. Overall I think 'Stranded' is better than 'Country Life' (although I prefer this album cover!). Still tonnes of great songs on this one though. 'The Thrill of it All' is an incredible album opener. The second half isn't as strong as the first and 'If It Takes All Night' and 'Bitter Sweet' are weak moments . Interested to see what other Roxy albums appear on this list, as it could be most of them. The later 70s albums might get given a bad time but they sound like a bunch of bands who were big in the last decade. And I'll always have time for 'Avalon'.

Not as wild as earlier stuff, but supremely polished and wry. Dig it.

An album I knew more from the cover than the music inside, but it was fascinating to hear the burgeoning soundscapes of Eno and Ferry forming into the distinctive Roxy Music style.

Unexpectedly enjoyed that

Liked it not amazing

Fun Rock

I actually liked it , thought I wouldn't Also damn those bodies are hot ngl 4/5

Unfortunate cover, unexpectedly heavy; the mix is extraordinarily fresh and the arrangements rich and well-crafted, with great playing and exciting sound Harmonies are sometimes surprising and memorable It doesn't sound like an album released in 1974, but maybe in the '80s or even 90s There're twists even in the blues songs; some proggier songs on side B

i debated on giving this a 3 or 4 but when else am I going to give something i’ve never listened to something high? I really enjoyed this album. It was new but nothing completely crazy; I just thought it was a good vibe overall.

Somehow a big gap in my 70s rock knowledge is/was Roxy Music. I think before this all I knew was their later single "Love is The Drug" and their - to me - very tepid "Avalon" so my impression before putting this on was that it would be smooth crooner type songs. Obviously right off the top "The Thrill of It All" is a high-energy rock tune which although may not be exactly ground-breaking, is just a good rock song. After that "Three And Nine" changes gears a bit - there's the Bryan Ferry as crooner I sort of expected. This is an odd one - almost at first listen it seems "normal" but there's a lot going on in each song. e.g. "Out Of The Blue" is a rocker but takes a few weird directions closing with a weird synth? (electric violin type sound) solo closing it out. I like it. "Bitter Sweet" has some unsettling Peter Gabriel meets Gong vibe to it. "Casanova" is a compelling funky galloping swaggering beat matched with Ferry's odd Bowie-like vocals (which i like much better than Bowie). Sum: weirdly diverse early 70s art-rock album. I feel like this is gonna take a few listens to sink in (or not) which I'm willing to give - I'm not yet sure what to think but this is far more than I'd expected which is always nice. 7/10 4 stars.

Nisam ovo očekivao, album je tako jebeno krenuo i prve 4 pjesme su melem za uši, druga polovica se morale cak 2 prebacit jebiga, navučena četvorka iako nije, al zbog prve polovice mi žao dat išta manje.

4/5. Proto nu-wave. Not every track totally slaps, but I get it

Buenísimo, me ha encantado. Guardadito T:7 P:8 G:8

Lekker, met name Casanova

I really enjoyed this. I was more familiar with Roxy's musics first two albums (with their wild Eno-isms and sideways approach to art-rock), and the later Ferry-led super-slick radio hits. This album, I really enjoyed. Great recording, still rockin', a bit of weird edge, great tunes. Track highlights; Thrill OF It All, Casanova

Another Roxy Music album is another great cover. A cover is great way to get some free publicity and the guys knew that. "The Thrill of It All" and "All I Want Is You" are the best songs on a solid rock album.

Great stuff

Count Dracula & the Grave Diggers made a pretty fantastic record. This one took a minute to set in, but I think I get it, and I think I love it. It's pop music but with enough oddity and risk and satire to be called art rock. Maybe. Doesn't matter. The groove is there. The band is messy. It's a hit. 1001 doesn't require criticism but unprompted there's still a track or two that's not for me due to that English baroque circus nightmare aesthetic that leans heavily on harpsichord and tuba. I VANT to VASH your VINDOWS. I VANT to GIVE a FIVE but. A

I'm just here for the album cover. Solid album, solid vibes, solid titties. Big fun.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Casanova, Prairie rose

There is something unique about Roxy Music. It's definitely rock and roll, yet it has those Eno avant garde vibes, a bit of glam English camp... Always works for me.

I liked this album more than the previous album on the list "For Your Pleasure". Still not a perfect album though, strange ending.

BOOBIES YAY YAY YAY YAY!!!

How have I never heard if them?

Fantastic album. Need to listen to this some more. Really like the sound and the overall vibe.

The Thrill Of It All, Casanova, Out Of The Blue, If It Takes All Night, A Really Good Time

Great.

Some really wild bass and guitar stuff going on. I dig this a lot.

Nice variety and made me want to listen to more.

It's a really solid album that shows Roxy Music could do commercial music whilst keeping true to their original image.

If It Takes All Night

Superb. Proper grower.

Really cool! I loved the leads. Would listen again

Virtuosic performances and good songs that stuck with me after just one listen--what's not to like? Maybe Brian's voice, but I like it.

Production: 14/20 Songwriting: 13/20 Innovation: 14/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 15/20 =66 Lovely stuff Ferryman

somewhat of an uninspired start but theres a lot of great songs here

Peppy, kinda funky, but fun.

Out of the blue is perfect. The whole album could be a Bowie album.

Typical Roxy 👍

not a big fan but nothing really to complain about either

This isn't a bad album, but I definitely prefer the albums when Brian Eno was with them.

Roxy’s music always was just a little too country life for me. I’d have liked it more if they had leaned a little bit into the sleazy side of glam. Sure Marc Bolan was the king and David Bowie the queen, but Bryan was just a little to princely with the artier side prevailing over the rock side. The record is certainly enjoyable and at this point in the bands catalog the Roxy sound was certainly set with Phil Manzanera’s intricate guitar work lending jazzy elements to the proceedings. What really stands out for me is that none of these songs evoke any real feeling and thus don’t really connect with me the listener. Not all Roxy records are the as well rounded as this one, but the lack of buzz makes this one miss the mark. Where are songs like Editions Of You which appeared on For Your Pleasure? That was a great freaking record. This record seemed like a step back. Oh well. 3/5

Interesting and unique album. Kinda alternative, kinda classic rock. I liked when the one song switched to german that was silly!

Great energy but not much stood out that I can think to talk about which isn’t the best sign

Album cover is pretty epic sigma mode Feel like the songs are trying to follow the recipe that made a lot of Bowie songs great but doesn’t quite have all the right ingredients 3

Surprised by the unique rock sound of this album, it's familiar but not quite like anything I usually listen to. Fun album but nothing too special. 6/10

Review - never like Roxy Music as much as I hope to. Not a bad album but there are a fair few dull songs in the mix. Score - 6/10 Need to listen? YES

nice safe sound not too experimental

Nja... Inte överförtjust i detta. Det är inte direkt dåligt men inte så kul. Out of the blue och Prairie Rose tyckte jag var bäst. Resten lite samma, samma... Gillar Roxy Music från lite senare år bättre. Får jag också säga att omslaget på albumet är lite tröttsamt? Halvnakna kvinnor i någon slags olja, modeller förstås.... Suck...

Middle of the road enjoyable listen, kept wanting a track to really impress me

How shocking that this was so middling.

Alright

Roxy Music - Country Life Thought, without Eno, this would be a lot straighter than it was. But the artschool glam racket vibe can still be heard all over this last 'hurrah' before the attraction of pop sales took over. Thrill of it All, Out of the blue (great violin), the rhapsody that is Bittersweet (David Sylvian must have listened to this a hundred times), Prairie Rose all well up there as standout tracks. But....there is a lot of filler, and I definitely wasn't prepared the theme from Blackadder one to appear in the guise of Tryptich. Best Track - Prairie Rose. Says goodbye to this era of Roxy with a lazy, laconic attitude. Manzanera's slide guitar and Ferry's 'just about bothered' vocal in the coda is a perfect kiss off. Worst Track - Tryptich. Medieval themed interlude anyone? Erm...no thanks. 7/10

Honestly liked this quite a bit, even for it being a genre I usually detest. I like the instrumentation, I like a lot of the themes, and there may or may not be one other thing here that's kind of very nice too. Gets a little weirder and less enjoyable upon a relisten, but I really have to make an effort to return to this more often. Fave tracks: - The Thrill Of It All - Three And Nine - Out Of The Blue - If It Takes All Night - Casanova - A Really Good Time - Prairie Rose

This is an album that I cannot post the cover of on social media unedited lol. They are not beating the allegations of band your mum likes. It's a good album, I should like it more, especially seeing it's early new wave. It just never hits that much for me.

I don't really know how to describe this music. It has a few different styles that mix and blend together that gives it a unique touch. It wasn't bad, it was definitely an interesting listen though.

It’s good but I feel like other bands have done this but better.

Eh fine. I like some of Roxy Musics output but I can never fully immerse myself in it seemingly.

I enjoyed the front half of this much more than the last album by them. Very Bowie-esque. The back half lost me again

Listened to it twice and I still don’t understand. Roxy Music is…. good?

The album really kicks off with a bang. It fades then picks up with a few more fun tracks Sonically, I love the anthemic rock. It has a Springsteen vibe without giving up the English rock band flavor. Cool to read the backstories here behind the personnel. Prarie Rose (the last track) was my favorite

Listening to this will depend on the day. The art rock navel gazing can be dull sometimes and interesting others

An interesting album. This is my second Roxy Music album. This first one I hated. This one seems to be better. The music is definitely better. The singing is good as well the songs are good so I think this is a better album.

"Hey, guys. So, we don't have that Brian guy anymore. He's off making God knows what, probably some stupid airport music or something. Problem is, we just lost one of the most popular art rock artists ever and our sales are probably gonna tank. What should we do?" "tiddies" "heh, tiddies..." The album then proceeded to outsell anything they made prior.

If It Takes All Night a bit like Shakin Stevens or Darts. Not sure about the Germanic Bitter Sweet. Or Triptych. Liked Prairie Rose. The rest was alright. 2.8.

Quite liked it. A bit different to the Roxy music i thought i knew. Sounded a bit like Sparks. Probably a grower.

We all know why everyone bought this and it wasn’t because the music is all that special

Before getting this album, I only knew More than This by Roxy Music, and I didn’t know what to expect. The beginning of the album is powerful, but then I feel it dissipates towards the end. The Thrill of it All is a powerful beginning, with the piano, strings and chanting of OOOOOOOHs. The album then begins to show its alternative rock character, and can be grouped with the likes of Talking Heads and The Beat. It then shows some southern rock, honky tonk vibes, a bit like Fleetwood Mac’s Don’t Stop. Bitter Sweet and Triptych is where you lose me, like a cold shower on irritating music coming through my headphones. God damn the harpsichord. With Prairie Rose it gets fun again. I would revisit this album for some of its songs, but not all.

reminded me of berlin by Lou Reed so i guess I know what art rock is now. The Thrill of it is a banger

twas ok

Alright

624/1001 2026.05.28 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

First Listen; 3; This felt like an uneven album. Some parts were catchy and fun, while others were boring and trite. I didn't care for the slower songs or the more country influenced tracks, but thought that it was at it's best in the more straightforward rocking, 1-2-3-4 songs. Favorite Track: Casanova

Honestly pretty good, even if i didn't enjoy it as much on my listen.

I imagine anyone that was a teenager in the 70s is very fond of this album and has great memories of it, despite never actually listening to it.

un 3...

Honestly, I get a little sick of the luscious art-pop thing the album is doing by the end. But christ almighty, that's probably my fault. Can your lobster be too buttery? Can your caviar be too rich? Alright, it's not THAT good, but it's pretty solid. Track after track of earnest love songs, dry British snark, and proto-new wave rhythms. All wonderful stuff, though I still stand by my point that you can have too much of a good thing. I wish it held back a bit more often, maybe.. maybe I'm just not high brow enough to get it. (Insert witty comment about the album cover here... cuntry life? I dunno.)

Kept me entertained, so I'll grant that, but didn't hear anything too remarkable here.

A decent glam rock album from the band. It doesn't include any really strange or very experimental part, like in "For Your Pleasure", maybe due to the replacement of Brian Eno in the keyboards. While this means they sacrificed a bit of uniqueness, I think it is a great decision as I wasn't a big fan of the weird parts in the mentioned project. The more straight forward song writing makes this a more fun experience. The songs are very fancy, glamorous, lively and rich in both instrumentation and details, but without ever being too extravagant. However, I don't really think this album is very memorable. The melodies and performances are gret, but I've never found anything to be outstanding or super interesting. Maybe in comparison with other glam project rocks, they do have their own sound and personality. Nevertheless, I am not really connecting with it. So in the end, I think it is a pleasant a fun album that doesn't do anything particularly remarkable.

It's alright. Nothing spectacular and nothing inherently bad either. 2.5/5 Might listen again

When I think of Roxy Music I think of light groovy 80’s yacht rock, having never heard this particular album before, I was expecting to hear more of that here. What I heard instead was a harder rock than I expected, some tracks almost verging into southern rock territory. It’s a good album for what it is, but it certainly doesn’t grab me in any of the ways Roxy Music’s earlier music that I am more familiar with does. It feels like this is more of an experiment in different styles than it is a cohesive album, and I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing, but on each individual track it’s pretty easy to point out a very specific artist that influenced it. Some examples include the song “Triptych” which has a clear psychedelic influence reminiscent of bands like the byrds and even the Beatles. “Casanova” sounds, to my ear, like an Alice Cooper B-side. “A Really Good Time” could easily pass for a song by Daryl Hall and John Oates. I don’t dislike anything on this record, but it really does feel like throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. 2.5*

I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked Roxy Music’s self-titled album when we reviewed it, so I was expecting this to be somewhere along the same lines. I quickly began to suspect that this album was Roxy Music without Brian Eno and I later found that was correct. ‘Country Life’ lacks the experimental edge of their self-titled album and a lot of these songs basically sounded the same to me.

It was OK. Pleasant to listen to, but just kinda boring

mulher pelada jumpscare

Listened to this three times and although I appreciate it more after the extra listens, I still didn't think it rose up to the rank of 4. Curious to see if there is more Roxy Music on this list. I haven't had any exposure before this and barely any Eno exposure.

If I liked art rock, I’d like this a lot. As it is, it’s pretty good.

Out of the blue reminds me of something but I can't place it. Zeppelin? Rush? idk Not a fan of bitter-sweet wth is going on Faves: The Thrill of It All All I Want is You

Ah, meneer Eno was inmiddels vertrokken.

I am a little tired of the same artists getting two albums on when the other album is better.

This one really didn't stand out to me in any particular way. At times it sounded a little odd and at other times it sounded a little pleasant, but I didn't feel like pulled in any particular direction with this album.

A mixed bunch.

Interesting

Er dette prog med radio-vennlig lengde på låtene? Ikke noe galt med det, men det fenger liksom ikke heller...

I’m a huge Roxy fan. This album doesn’t really hit the mark. The cover artwork is awful, even at the time!! All I Want Is You is a great single but the album lacks the weird and wonderful of previous albums.

The music is fine, slightly elevated by Brian Ferry’s distinctive vocals.

I like Roxy, but they seemed to have jumped the shark by the 4th album. The theme of the album cover was just too far. The music is still good but not as good as before. This one is mid.

Not my favorite Roxy album. I think it makes so many lists due to the cover picture more than the music. Still pleasant though. 3/5

This is far better than the first album by them I heard on this list. I'll give a 3

It was pretty nice, mos to the songs, not really memorable, we're all good

Mixed feelings

mixed bag. there's songs like "three and nine" and "triptych" which have some very fun instrumentation; the latter with that lovely harpsichord. they didn't overly stand out to me, but it was broadly pleasant. on the other hand there's songs like "out of the blue" and "if it takes all night" feel like pretty generic 70s rock that aren't noteworthy at all, or "bitter sweet" which is a neat concept but totally whiffs imo. this is Almost good and instead it's just okay on the whole.

"English 70s rock band" we're so over. "Brian Eno" We're so back. This IS more interesting than the average British rock slop on the list, its got a bit of flavor by merit of being art pop and maybe even the tiniest touch of prog. As it went on the almost glam aesthetic did begin to win me over- I can see a lot of Bowie in some of these songs and googled to learn he was indeed a fan (and also the Eno connection is there). It just feels a little uneven to me. The topics of most of the songs didn't really interest me, some songs leaned too much on the pop end whilst other songs (Bitter Sweet) flat out didn't work imo. With a little more focus this would be a 4 for me, but I don't think it quite reaches that bar.
