Amazing, took a couple listens to really appreciate it, would listen again

Day 3 - June 4th, 2024 Anyone got a pack of reds? 4.5/5

This type and era of jazz is right in the sweet spot for me. I hadn't heard this before, but I really enjoyed it. They just don't make em like this anymore, sadly...

I’m familiar and a big fan of Mingus Ah Um, which should be on this list! But first time listening to this album, this is different a bit more experimental Jazz, but I still enjoyed it, personally I prefer bebop jazz, to the experimental side of it. But this one had a nice mix of the two, added to my rotation.

Absolutely loved the last song, the rest I enjoyed but I would prefer a bit slower of pace. Maybe jazz is to much stress for me. Had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4

One of my favorite quips from reading Charles Mingus’ biography was the story of how he would stop a show if people were talking or clinking glasses, and if they didn’t cease the noise, he would pick up the mic stand and throw it violently into the audience demanding silence. A bit too far? Yes, but they sure shut the hell up after that. He was there to put on a show and felt it was highly disrespectful to interrupt it by not paying attention. That energy absolutely makes its way into his avant-garde jazz. Charles plays an aggressive bass on 4 very well constructed ballet movements that feel graceful and violent at the same time. This is top notch jazz for anyone who doesn’t know the genre well and is looking for a more unconventional place to begin exploring beyond the well worn standards.

Jazzy and lots of sax initially, but more than that. Very interesting piano on Track C. Then it becomes a Latin sounding fusion piece. Super cool. There's some great parts in the last two pieces too. Really a mix of genres (often alternating instruments and styles in the same track) but often melodic. Not really my thing; maybe it should be.

Hermoso

Elegant in its chaos. I’d enjoy seeing this performed as a ballet like Mingus originally wrote it.

What better record than this one

A nice easy Listening instrumental

That's some proper jazzing by Mingus right here. I can only hope there is more stuff like this on this list.

I'm not usually into recorded jazz, but this was great!

A really interesting album - more of an auditory experience than anything. Lots that I didn’t really understand but still enjoyed - my favorite parts were the piano solos and the flamenco guitar sections. I also loved when they played with rhythm and seemed to have two different meters in different sections. I don’t know if I’d listen again, but I thought it was really cool and they were all clearly masters of their crafts and a tight ensemble!

I loved the first side of the album, but wasn't so excited about the second side.

Good album; sounds like something from a movie soundtrack. I like how they mix a bit of classical into the jazz.

I usually don't like experimental jazz but this was compelling for some reason that I can't articulate. I think that's the point of experimental jazz, so I have to give it props.

cool mixed bag solo dancer single solos and group dance group and solo dance

This is what by brain feels like on a bad day, so it sucks that I enjoyed it so much.

Good high energy jazz. The last song is to long for me. But overall great energy.

Really enjoyed the jazz on this album

great slow burn jazz blues album 4/5

👌 Wertung: 🚬🚬🚬(🚬)/5

This hurt my brain

Wow, this is much better than I thought. This album is entirely instrumental jazz. I never got bored while listening. It might be because I really like jazz. I've never heard of Mingus before Friday. 4 stars from me.

This was an interesting listen and I would listen again. I liked how the music seemed to be telling a story, with conversations going on. It was interesting to read afterwards that this was written partially as a ballet. I liked it more than I thought I would.

Classic

damn [Comments after the initial listen. This was all I could articulate in the moment. This was pretty great. All I can probably do now for this 1001 album challenge]

I have now acquired a taste for freeform jazz.

Seeing this album labelled as avant-garde jazz on Wikipedia made me expect worse. I mean, I see that descriptor and I'm expecting... Like, noise, honestly. Atonal and with everyone playing in a different weird time signature, but I'm supposed to appreciate it because, I'unno, it's hard to play a trumpet in 30/31. However, it turns out I really can't hear what's so avant-garde about it. At most it sounds like the jazz Frank Zappa would have The Mothers play—and that's a big compliment in my book. The same one I gave THIRD by Soft Machine, actually. (Though give this album the benefit, only one song approaches 20 minutes, and even then it's because it's comprised of three smaller movements). I'unno, I just really dug it. It's one I'd throw on whenever I'm in the mood for something like it, sure. Sometimes I need a little THE GRAND WAZOO, y'know? And this isn't even the album by this guy that got on the Rolling Stone 500? Gosh, you can only imagine how good **that one** is.

Good. Ass. Jazz. Nothing much else to say.

pretty good jazzy album I liked the licks that kept coming back YYN

I’m no jazz expert, but enjoyed this a lot.

The type of jazz I like with just a bit of cacophony perfectly thrown in

This might be the first jazz album of this era that I’ve enjoyed! Maybe I’m ready for jazz now, maybe this just rocks. I’m going to try more. Jazz has always been there my whole life. Movies, films, holiday soundtracks. So I’ve never really grabbed on. This album grabbed me. I love the mood it sets, the journey it takes you on, and the international feel some of the tunes have. Chaotic, cacophonous, energetic and inspiring!

Amazing, fast paced, funky jazz. I listened on my way to work running late driving in the rain and it kind of fit the vide perfectly. It's like was anxiety sounds like lol. Really enjoyed.

I’m no jazz connoisseur, but I can tell this is very good. Just how good a jazz album is I think becomes a little subjective once you get past the virtuosity of the performers and the craftsmanship of the composition. Both of those are clearly top notch on this album. So then I ask myself, what does this album make me feel? Sexy chaos.

Advent-grad jazz king. Edgy, but great jazz artist, and composer. His music to this day is one of a kind. Great album.

For Jazz - not a favorite gene of mine - this is really good. There are times that this album can be addicting. 4/5

Good album, not my kind of music

Weird and cool

Jazz is definitely a music style that isn't supposed to be paused and returned to mid song. I did that a few times with this album as I made my way through it which made me re-start a few songs. When listened from start to finish the album is absolutely slapping with funky jazz. Easy to listen to and great music to do something to.

Wasn't convinced at the start, but as the album progressed I became slightly hypnotized by it. I really enjoyed the final track with it's softer parts and it's rises and peaks. The band really knows how to express scenes and feelings wordlessly to paint a picture.

This is HARD jazz, in a good way. Shits so personal feels like their instruments are describing a divorce or something. 4.0

Jazz altijd 4 sterren.

- I am by no means a jazz aficionado, but I at least know that 1) Charles Mingus was incredibly influential in the jazz world and 2) that this jazz is not in any way generic or boring. - I did like the second half (tracks C and D) more. There were more unusual moments sprinkled throughout these that caused me to perk up.

I do love brass...

Very good

groovy

Really cool theme for the album. The "dance" variations provided a listening anchor for me to ground myself in. It gets hectic for C and D, definitely not just a "throw on" album. This one takes some concentration. Mingus is the man. Need some more exposure for sure. Does being behind the bass give a deeper perspective and feeling? Maybe

This was sublime. Such a contrast to the two country albums I was served (Steve Earle and some hick). Love the elongated tracks. In 2024, this is an amazing contrast. Anyone reading thins should listen to BSatSL on repeat.

A well-made jazz album with a good feel. Not too bad Mr. Mingus!

Not well suited for analytical computer work.

Deserves more of an in depth listen

Not my cup of tea but a worthwhile listen

Just brilliant.

extemporaneous jazz always a hard hitter.

Ok Mingus baseline fun times. Brought me back to my jazz band days

Amazing, don't know much of Jazz, but this got me hooked. Especially track C

I'm not the biggest jazz noodling fan but this album was pretty good. Could see sticking this on if I was in the right mood.

This was fun

Really moving and weird jazz, I've never heard anything like this before.

Oh yeah Charles Mingus. Wonderful. Yesterday was a perfect day for jazz too🤘🔥 pouring rain, slick city streets, nobody could find their lane, it was madness🙄😂😂 just a slow roll home after work with Mingus cranked on the car stereo. Lovin it

I loved how this incorporated Jazz with elements of traditional Asian instruments.

Love the experimentation on this. It’s also nice to hear jazz that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.

Definitely a headphones kind of listen, I definitely got more out of this than if I had left it on in the background as I worked. This is the type of dissonant, experimental, hep cat/beatnik kind of jazz that I'm less inclined towards but as far as that style goes I did find myself enjoying this album more than others. Also points for being brief, when i saw this was four tracks I was worried they'd each be 15 minutes or more, but the first three were all reasonably brief.

Would have loved to see this live. Top musicianship Great blend of all the instruments

Fantastic record. Felt like it was taking me around the world and across time with all the different styles of jazz. A blend of serenity and intriguing chaos. Was hooked nearly all the way. About halfway through track D I was ready I was ready to move on.

Like all great jazz, Mingus puts us inside a Time Capsule that’s inside a Time Machine. We’re right there listening to art created in the spot and we’re also confronted by music that no genre or era has caught up with. It’s not for everyone but it’s meant for everybody, and it rewards repeated listens like the most timeless music always does.

luscious impressionistic jazz music that makes you think. a seamless blend of groove, whimsy and chaos... only a few different tracks but containing very long lengths, jam packed of solos that just go on and on and on, keeping you engaged all the way through. this one's pretty good.

Ух ты! Я никогда не слышал этот альбом. Я люблю Мингуса, но я не знал, что он это сделал! Для меня это правая сторона Орнетта Коулмана. Музыканты были потрясающими!! и контртромбон: что это было?! Очень круто.

I love some good jazz and some crunchy horns

3.5/5. This was good. I like jazz.

Kind of a cross between big band sound and jazz.

Jazzy, high energy, chaotic at times, interesting, happy and excited though

He continues to impress me with some of the best jazz I've ever heard.

It has moments of delicacy and beauty, and of utter stormy cacophonous noise. Putting aside the stories about Mingus (aggressive, violent bugger, essentially) it feels like these people are all playing for their lives. Quite a thing to behold

Reminds me of an early 1960's bustling downtown New York City at night. Interesting mix of sounds, gets kind of intense at times. Worth more listens. No. Title Subtitle Length 1. "Track A – Solo Dancer" "Stop! Look! And Listen, Sinner Jim Whitney!" 6:39 7/10 2. "Track B – Duet Solo Dancers" "Hearts' Beat and Shades in Physical Embraces" 6:45 7/10 3. The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady is one of the first jazz albums we've had that I can visualise a story in, that I can feel as being the soundtrack to a 50/60s black and white classic, that makes you feel. The big band contribution definitely works in its favour in that regard, the solo piano parts break it up really nicely, it's full of energy, it doesn't have much by way of unnecessary improvisational meandering, it's a nice 40 minutes, yeah this is really good and a 4 for me.

This album has helped me better understand the difference between jazz I like, and jazz I don't. Definitely prefer the big band stuff, but love the variety in this. There's a lot going on (sometimes too much), but it's a much better listen than some of the other jazz that we've had. Think it scrapes a 4.

Covers a lot of musical ground in it's runtime. Jazz is a very subjective experience. Either it clicks or it doesn't. For me this clicked. 9/10

Loved every second of this. Not a jazz guy but this had layers intrigue and build up throughout. 8

Heel gaaf! Heel filmisch en echt luister muziek, niet echt voor op de achtergrond. Would buy!

Track A - 0_0 Track B - hmmmmmmmm hehe Track C - sexy flutes and flamenco guitar, I like this a lot, hehehe woah Track D - jeebus......... the piano melody keeps coming back...... then it speeds up....... then slows down........... then weird at the end......... whew

Vackert, kaotiskt, skrämmande. Jätte fint Album

No estoy segura que consiste en buen jazz, peor aun jazz libre, pero me gustó

Wow loved this one. Very happy to have discovered it here. So much to discover in this album, def needs many listens.

A beautifully ominous, disjointed masterpiece

Hugely influential and a glaring display of brilliance

4.3 Not the biggest jazz expert by any means but have a few Mingus albums and seem to drawn to his work more than anyone else.

I liked this album. I can't say I'm one of those people who really "gets" fancy jazz—I enjoy listening to it, but I couldn't tell you what makes a piece of jazz genius. It tends to be more background music that I can vibe to. I did find it cool when they made the horns (I forget which exact instrument it was) "talk" and the random Spanish guitar was great—I love me some Spanish guitar. 4/5 I guess? Why not?

The first few times I listened to Black Saint, I wasn't really sure what to make of it. Mingus takes us through waves of chaos and calm. Black Saint is eclectic, jarring, and dissonant, punctuated by moments of respite, followed by subsequent spirals into cacophonous and energetic whirlwinds of sound. It is a challenging record to summarize, but one with plenty of depth. Is it what I want to hear when I pour a glass of whisky and share dinner with friends? Not really. But as an artistic achievement in orchestration and composition, there are few equals.

Track A - 8/10 Track B - 8/10 Track C - 8/10 Mode D - 8/10 TOTAL - 32/40

Excellent quality music, with interesting moments.

Lovely sounds. Keeps you hooked and at the same time you can continue doing other things. It’s like an 80’s spy movie, where the crime is solved but the detective’s life doesn’t. Victim is gone, murderer uncovered, but heart is lonely and broken. Moving forward is just a way of not thinking. Unsettling yet intriguing.

"Touch my beloved's thought while he world's affluence crumbles at my feet."

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this.

the more you listen to the album the more it agrees with you. So many memorable motifs. The drumming, piano, the cymbal hits, the trumpet, and all the instruments are just working in harmony. It's a strong 4.

Liking this jazz

A lot of feeling to the music.

I find Mingus challenging. In a good way! But challenging nonetheless. It’s brilliant jazz music. Sometimes I really understand what is going on and sometimes I’m lost. But I’m here for the ride. This isn’t my favorite of his. I prefer Pre-Bird and Ah Um. To me, this one’s less catchy and more of an impressionistic piece. For some reason it evokes a bustling/chaotic 1950s NYC or something similar. Not somewhere I want to spend all my time, but it’s fun to visit every now and then.

I wasn't a fan of the some of the horns in the earlier songs. But that acoustic guitar and that last song was masterful - 7/10

7/10 - Pretty good. I was grooving most of the time but parts of it did not hit for me.

Nice classic jazz. Feel embarrased I hadn't heard of him before.

Not my taste but very cool.

Hit the spot.

Solid album, good flow and complexity.

Good bit of jazz

Good album. Liked the different tempo changes throughout the songs and the solos. Loved the audio and mixing of the different instruments.

Não é meu estilo musical, mas foi muito bom ouvir enquanto lavava a louça

I’ll admit I don’t really know anything about jazz but I have always wanted to learn more. This was very different from any jazz I have listened to before. I thought it was very interesting

Some great jazz, would definitely want to listen again.

Listened Before? No Never listened to Mr. Mingus before. Love the simplicity of the album cover and the album title is dope. Enjoying the lopsided evolution on Track A. Feels a bit like I'm listening to a live lounge saxophone + drummer with a warped LP in the background. Really cool effect. Track B sounds really familiar out of the gate. I've definitely heard this melody interpolated somewhere, though I have no idea where. This song is downright dysfunctional in the midsection and I love it. Track C pulls out some Spanish influences. and Track D goes well off the deep end numerous times. Some interesting folk/classical influences at work here I have a hard time reviewing jazz in a manner "consistent" with more pop-stylized music. With jazz, I treat it more as a journey and how it made me feel as a whole, whereas with pop I can be swayed by a few solid tracks. In this case, Mingus takes us on a hell of a journey over the 40 minute playtime. I can safely say this is unlike any other jazz I have heard before and am glad to have experienced it. This isn't something you are going to sit back and ease into. This is densely layered madness that shifts continuously and is pulled together by an incredible vision. For me this is a 4 on pure enjoyment and the fact that it kept me guessing and engaged all the way through. Added to Library? Yes

I've listened to some Mingus but not this album, but love some good jazz! This was a great album to do some work around the house to. Got kinda dark at some points which I enjoyed. Classic yazz album.

I like Mingus, and this album has its moments but it is also a cacophony, I think maybe deliberately different voices given the album title. A jazz classic I like but don’t love.

I'm not going to pretend like I know anything about jazz, but this was fantastic. 4.

Sound track to some 20 somethings in leotards dancing round a Greenwich Village loft in the mid 60s. Everyone’s a tree. Far out man. Love it.

My favorite thing about jazz as a musical spectrum is when listening the kind that tells a story throughout the instrumentation. Charles Mingus is arguably one of the best storytellers within the realm. This being a beautiful example of how you can picture a man caught up within the consequences of his actions and everything that he ultimately must deal with once he meets a woman that seems to echo the chaos throughout his life... All that and more within these mere 30 minutes. 4 out of 5 stars.

not into jazz but interesting to listen

I can see why people are so divided over this one, it's not exactly something you can just throw on any time. You have to be in the right mood for it. Some people would just say it's noise and I think that might be fair but if you listen to what's happening it's great noise. Musicianship is superb as always with Mingus. It may not be my favorite jazz record of all time but it's still a great listen and typical for this style so I feel like it would be a good record to start with for someone trying to get an expanded view of jazz.

great but distracting

A quirky but musical jazz journey.

Fallegt. Virkar vel í bakgrunni við vinnuna. Langar að setja aftur í gang seinni partinn þegar það er orðið dimmt úti og ég komin undir teppi í sófanum með kakó á kantinum.

Af en toe wat rommelig, verder goed.

I enjoyed the album, all the songs had a good beat to them. I really liked the tune of Track B- Duete Solo Dancers.

Interesting mixture of jazz and other music

A very unique instrumental album jazz regards and feelings of l.a noir short but sweet

jazz is a challenge for me but this is powerful

Great jazz album! A little all over the place, but hey that's jazz! Glad we got some Mingus.

Different kind of jazz

Pretty chill. Will check out more of his stuff.

Every song feels like it takes you on a journey. They’re all different enough to keep you interested, but still all fit together thematically. There are repeating motifs throughout that are fun to catch.

Great Jazz Album. I don't yet have an acquired taste for it.

Makes me feel like I’m sharing a table with a stranger in silence in a darkly lit establishment while drinking whiskey neats.

I'm sure I'll get some hate for this, but in terms of avant-garde jazz, I find this far superior to Miles Bitches Brew. The transitions on this record are brilliant, and I think that's what changes it for me. Absolutely loved it, and will be looking for it on vinyl because I'm a hipster douche.

Raaaad

Naja jazz

Great stuff! Had a blast listening to this.

Not quite perfect to me, a couple misses. But god damn it's so good

Jazz on an album is always an underperformance. But I really enjoyed this one.

Honestly pretty fire

Good shit

Wild jazz that goes in every direction at once but still somehow stays under control.

The way that this album builds tension and releases it is just fantastic. I like jazz with a bit of edge and this album delivers.

Really busy. Lot of ideas on top of each other

Du jazz avec des sonorités surprenantes, mélangeant musique latine avec pratiquement du big ban. Impressionnant album, surtout considérant l'année!

Very weird and dramatic

The intro of Duet Solo Dancers is sampled in the intro track of Cold World - Dedicated To Babies Who Came Feet First Quite good, not amazing but still great

Pretty cool jazz. Not much else to say, not my kind of music but regardless a very enjoyable and dynamic piece

Saucy jazz! Both creative and chaotic. It goes off of the rails just enough to capture your stress hormones and then releases the dopamine with some sultry wind instruments. It’s expertly composed with just enough variety to please even the most adverse jazzers.

Hazz like instrumental with occasional vocals.

Me sorpredieron algunos arreglos, gran disco de jazz. Muy digerible.

This album inspired a lot of great jazz throughout the last 60 years. The interplay between harmonies and dissonance is incredible.

It's all a little too much for me. I prefer quieter jazz, but this is excellent for what it is. Track C is my favorite on the album.

Wow this was great! It has all of the qualities of Jazz that I enjoy. I'm not sure what those qualities are, yet but basically if it sounds like the Ed, Edd n Eddy soundtrack I'm in! Also this was nice and short. A lot of Jazz albums have an issue with dragging a little and I feel like there wasn't much of that here. It was towing the line between rehearsed and improv really well. 4

Really interesting jazz piece. A bit too hectic for my taste maybe but still a fun listen with tons of funky brass tones and great performances. 7/10

Rhapsody in Black!

The moment I put this on in the car I was struck by the feeling I was being tailed, or maybe I was tailing the car ahead. Was I the hunter or the prey, impossible to tell. The only thing that can be known for sure is that a dark secret will be revealed tonight. Deeply invocative.

Very good

This was all over the place and weird so I liked it. Good to start the day in a strange way

Definitely added to my playlist.

I didn’t much care for it on the first listen, but something in my mind told me to give it another listen. It’s very complex music, and it’s definitely a very challenging listen, but I think I’m actually growing to like it.

Haunting and powerful!

It was really fun

Very good, although i feel unqualified

Good jazz

Always like his stuff.

Track A - Solo Dancer: Good lead in. Chaotic as usual for Mingus. Love it. Getting big "rolling down Hollywood in 1960s" type vibes from this track. Very back-alley sounding. 8/10. Track B - Duete Solo Dancers: You can tell the change between this and the first track. It goes back to kind of an elitist vibe, this must be where Mingus remembers he was originally writing this album for a ballet. Gradually mellows back to regular Mingus, something resembling Track A. Has kind of that Charlie Brown teacher "whomp-whomp" from an instrument that sounds almost human. Essentially the same as Track A after a few minutes. 7/10. Track C - Group Dancers: Interesting piano start. Interesting guitar interaction. Definitely like this one; has a Brazilian vibe sort of that I like, combined with Mingus's urban-sounding seediness. Guitar goes away (sad!) back into Mingus's vibe. Really no different from his other tracks except for this. 9/10. Medley - Mode-D Trio and Group Dancers: Single-handedly half the track time in this album??? The guitar returns! Let's go! I got kinda bored about 6 minutes in. This track is so long I tuned most of it out. Still really good though, I expect nothing less from Mingus. 8/10 Total: 32/40 --> 80/100. I like Mingus, but this album is a tad strange. I get he was writing this for a ballet but it doesn't sound like a ballet. Also, the final track is like 20 minutes long. Cut it up a bit. Otherwise, fantastic album.

Gran album de jazz

Favourites: • Trio and Group Dancers (Stop! Look! And Sing Songs of Revolutions!) / Single Solos and Group Dance (Saint and Sinner Join in Merriment on Battle Front) / Group and Solo Dance (Of Love, Pain, and Passioned Revolt, Then Farewell, My Beloved, 'Til It's Freedom Day)

One of his best albums I think. Sublime at times.

Not much to say about this one, it’s just very very very good

Not a great listen -- on a plane, lots of noise, not loud enough -- but very interesting material indeed. I am aware of Charles Mingus and have listened to him on some recordings as a member of a group, but I haven't listened to an actual recording with him as the artist. Clearly some sort of avant modern dance accompaniment, this is interesting stuff. I see why he's referenced in the same breath as Miles.

Messy jazz

This is the jazziest jazz i've ever jazzed before.

Really enjoyed this. Different to a lot of other jazz but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Obviously the Latin sound every now and then added something, but it was also bordering classical at times. Which is a strange combination having a very structured genre like classical, with improvised jazz. But it worked for me, will definitely be returning

Caught up with this one at the weekend, it was admittedly an odd gym soundtrack. I really liked it though, was what I want from jazz, trippy and inventive with lots of tempo changes. Must be an eventual influence on math rock as it definitely feeds the same part of my brain. Will put Mingus on in the background next time I'm trying to be classy.

I greatly enjoyed the artistic expression and variation, and general lack of theme and repetition throughout. Track 3 - Group Dancers, and the first 5-6 minutes of Track 4 (Mode D - Trio and Group Dancers) were my favourites. I don't think I'll return, as it isn't my thing, but I'm very glad to have listened. Avante-garde.

Mjög töff og gaman að hlusta,

It’s decent not my usual stuff but I enjoyed it 4/5

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the flow of writing reviews on this site, so I’m not gonna say much right now but I did really enjoy this album. I hope I get more of his stuff in the future! 4.5

Absolutely beautiful jazz. Flows together perfectly and goes through incredibly interesting and jaw dropping territory along the way. Requires a full listen through every time, but as someone who doesn’t interact with raw jazz much, I was very very pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment.

I really enjoy these jazzy instrumental albums - very fun and easy to listen to. This one is great.

This album moves between sweet, beautiful composition and dissonant, frenetic energy with such grace and power. Those may sound contradicting, but it's just an album that contains multitudes, without ever needing to rely on voice or lyrics. A great showcase of Mingus' talent.

I don’t really get ballet. What I do get is Mingus. The grand ol’ angry man of the double bass tests your patience on this experimental piece of jazz history that seems years ahead of even some of his great contemporaries.

I love myself some jazz: Don't think I'll ever give a jazz album lower than 3 bc they're all so solid (unless it sounds like shit). This one is no different with it feeling like it could be in the background of a Bond film with its dark, sinister undertones. The artist may not have been the best person in real life but the music he made was enjoyable.

Really great jazz album, totally all over the place in the best way possible. So much more than just background music

Loved this album, Tidal had the master which has the audio that’s not mixed in mono. I feel like I understand my brain better after having to listen fully with both left and right ears. That experience feels like it’s how your brain is supposed to “dance” your sense feel alive. It’s emotional. But I clearly see why people love it, it’s like African, Spanish, and American while at the same time sounds like it was made it 1983 and not 1963. It’s crazy beautiful.

Solid jazz album, clear elements that have been taken to create the contemporary style were present. Jazz has the same power as artwork, it invokes a response.

This is some great background music, super chaotic

An album that I admire more than love sometimes. Definitely not background music, and you need to be in the right mood for it.

Interessant album. Soort free improvisatie gigachaos jazz.

Nice Jazz. Can be leastened again.

I’m still very new nee to jazz Discovering this genre is very wild and I appreciate most outings, but never felt like I truly “get it”. But this album is something else. It is creative, it is elegant, it can be fierce. But never without losing its momentum. These are very strong compositions on a very cohesive record. And I love the length, it flies by and makes me want to put it on again. 8 out of 10

Schon gehört Brauche noch bisschen ums zu apprechiaten Strong 7/10

I love how Mingus drifts between cacophonous and unsettling. Real good stuff. Has a southern/bayou vibe to it too.

High quality jazz right here folks.

Charlie Brown’s teacher was really laying it down.

Great album, always felt it sounded like a film score.

I've never got into Mingus as much as some other jazz musicians, but this is definitely a great album nevertheless.

Nice live album. An intense listen at times. Rewards focused listening.

Ya like jazz???

I don't really like jazz. But I really like this.

Wonderful

Wow, normally I'm nonplussed about the jazz ones but this was amazing. Discordant New Orleans style jazz that felt incredible in my headphones. Bits of flamenco creeping in here and there.

Great jazz tunes, I like it for working

An obviously brilliant record. Very challenging, but so enjoyable.

Un poco de jazz molón para empezar la semana (LNB) El jazz siempre da buen rollito,y hoy lunes desde la cama mucho más (PSP) Muy muy marchoso (ONB)

An actual masterpiece. I know it’s jazz, but it’s fun to listen to; if you have the time. It does seem more life one long song rather than four separate which is fine, and more common in jazz, but not to this extent. I don’t think there are enough jazz albums on this list and this addition is a great example of why there should be more. I wish I knew enough about jazz to justify the score I’m giving this album, but until then, I will keep listening and enjoying Mingus. 4/5

Beautiful haunting jazz compositions from one of the all-time greats

Me gustó lo dinámico y variado en cuando a sonidos y melodías es, además es súper compacto y se pasa sin darse cuenta

This stressed me out, but it had more of an impact on me than jazz usually does so I’ve gotta give it credit.

Bold and dark, rich and engaging. The odd bits of instrumentation add to the interest. I can’t speak to how original this is – vs. how Ellingtonian (which it seems quite a bit to be, most similar to “Such Sweet Thunder”) – but one has always loved Mingus’ willingness to take risks, follow his muse, and challenge listeners. There's a sweetness lacking here, that would play nicely against the considerable dissonance. Dear editors: why not include records by Kamasi Washington as contemporary bookends to this? 3.7 > 4.

If classical and jazz had a baby and that baby went up to college and got a really good job and then always came home for the holidays and bought you a nice house and, when you retired, it put you in one of those nice communities with palm trees and where the water is clean and they came over on Sunday to watch Looney Tunes.

Like this came out same year as Freewheelin' Dylan's thing, and I am *way* more interested in the musical ambition of this. Late jazz in general goes to really interesting places!

I like the idea of free-style jazz more than actually listening to it. Sure the musician is phenomenal... but you have to be in the right mood to listen and you kind of need to concentrate on it as the music isn't the repetitious sound that you can just tune out and chill to. Appreciate it for what it is, but it's not high on my listening lists. I did really like the medley song though, that was groovy to listen to.

I was blown away by the chaos and control of Mingus and his big band that is able to twist 50s pop music to his whim. It's eery and uncomfortable, yet glued together by reoccurring motifs, and there are often so few instruments at once you aren't constantly overwhelmed. The way the instrument fight and dance with each other, changing their tempo and tone to crazy levels, just pulls your attention without falling apart. So many highlights that there's never a moment to be bored by. Production is clear and crisp. Nice incorporation of the Latin guitar.

Certainly not anything like I’ve heard before. I wasn’t very convinced at the beginning but it grew on me. Obviously it’s very avant hard but very considered. The discordance flows very well at certain moments and at others is extremely jarring. Definitely an experience that somehow made my train journey less dull. Favourite: Track C - Group Dancers

This record is kind of wild. I didn't really like it the first playthrough until about halfway through Mode D, then something just clicked. I started it from the beginning immediately after the first playthrough and actively listened and was blown away at how much I had missed the first time through. Solid 4/5.

As much as I love jazz, I’m not great at reviewing/talking about it. this is great though! A-?

Favorites - Track B and Track C (first half)

Smooth 4/5

Chill (morning) Jazz

What can I say? I like jazz. This was rather enjoyable, which is about what I expected myself to think. It's perfect to just sit back, close your eyes, and listen to. My favourite songs were Track B - Duete Solo Dancers and Track C - Group Dancers.

Such a refined sense of not giving a damn about the status quo.

Wow this was pretty damn cool. I did not expect the man to throw in a flamenco guitar into a jazz medley, but he pulled it off very well. I still lack any understanding of jazz music - if you utter the word "polyrhythmic" in my house, I am calling the exorcist - but this was one of the few jazz albums where I just sat back and genuinely enjoyed the experience.

Of all of the jazz albums I’ve gotten, while this isn’t my favorite, I think this is the first one where I really began to appreciate the process of making jazz. This whole album was so rich and complex in all of its instrumentation and felt simultaneously highly choreographed and highly improvisational

The starting track, Solo Dancer, is a powerful, moving song that that encapsulates chaos and disarray in the most brooding and plain scary way possible. This song sounds like the descent into the underworld, underneath a smooth, jazzy number. Track B, Duete Solo Dancers starts in the exact opposite way from Track A. Slow and soft, offering a chance to breathe. Before it slowly increases in tempo, coming back to the intense, unhinged feeling of the previous track. The tempo fluctuates, creating a confusing and overwhelming environment that encapsulates you. Track C, Group Dancers, is structured the same as Track B. Starting off with a slow, melodic piano solo before eventually descending into the chaos of the previous two tracks. Mode D/Mode E serve as a summary of the previous 3 tracks. They feature solos from almost every instrument, similar stanzas/motifs and composition to the previous tracks. Overall, this was a great album. Something I don't think I would have discovered, or given a chance before. But I'm glad I did. Favourite Track: Mode D/Mode E Medley Least favourite: None

What is this tim signature in the first song? the second and thrid track kind of blur but this 4th track is pretty cool.

I like this but I’m not sure how much is genuine and how much is pretension.* Probably about 80/20. Things I thought of while listening to this album: The I Dream of Jeannie theme song, the Bewitched theme song, the show Mad Men, film noir, flamenco music and the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley. * to be clear, it is myself I am trying to impress. I’m trying to be cool enough for this music.

if you got the evil ending in Cuphead and thought "man I wish there was a whole album with that energy", boy do I have the album for you

Damn good jazz from one of the greatest musicians to ever live.

I thought I hated jazz, but apparently I just haven't been listening to the right jazz. This was genuinely a joy to listen to.

Happy to finally listen to the work of the man who gets a shoutout in the extended version of "Woke Up This Morning" (The theme song to The Sopranos). I was not disappointed.

Liked it! Great early sixties modern jazz and lots of sax!

Great record. I listen to jazz occasionally and I have always found Mingus' work to be top-tier.

Jobbig start, men visade sig vara ett spännande album. En riktig resa! Jazzjazzjazz

Listened to this a while ago

If Miles Davis' early records are delicate shuffles of greatness, this record just pushes all that jazz to a very dirty and groovy place - raspy trumpets and saxophones, a little flamenco and a wild ride all throughout - with wonderful ups and downs - a true rollercoaster along the 4 medley tracks. Not a chill album for sure, more of a party thing going - loved it.

Dynamic Melodie’s and some instrumentation that actually sounds like people talking. A highlight of Mingus’ composing.

Excellent album. Felt like a conversation in music.

I really love compositions like this, where it feels like the entire set is an adventure or a story. On top of that, this is undoubtedly some pretty amazing jazz.

Groovy. Mingus gets weird without resorting to a lot of extended technique. Or any notable technique, really. The innovation is all in the melodies and arrangements, making an eminently approachable piece of avant-garde. With a great laconic ending note. The final movement(s) end up slightly samey, but that's the differentiating factor as well.

bien, jazzy, entretenido

Este disco me dio ansiedad

I have never been a great fan of Jazz, mostly I think because I consider music to be something to dance to as well as to listen to, and unless you are a practicioner of modern free dance, jazz really doesn't offer much scope for dancing. Having said that I quite enjoyed listening to this, which took me by suprise. Perhaps that is why Charles Mingus is so highly regarded. I only knew of him by reputation, so this was one of those moments when the concept behind 1001 worked for me.

Not a big jazz fan, something just doesn't catch me the same way that blues does but this was a great sound so I'm glad I listened to it

me re gustó!!! 8 / 10

I knew the dame was trouble the minute she walked through my door. I could see the storm clouds gathering behind those far away eyes as her painted lips whispered their siren's song. "Please help me." Well, Benny and his mooks were bound to come around soon for the double sawbuck I owed him from the Palazzo fight, and I didn't have it. So I said "Sure. Take a seat and tell me your story."

Not really a huge jazz guy. But within the dozen-ish jazz albums I've listened to, this may be my favorite after Pharoah Sander's Karma.

vraiment le même 4 que pour John Coltrane🧚

Great samples , drums shimmer and boom through the mix , tight drum performance , and the brass section was dialed right in . Piano sit well in the mix with a hard standout performance. Group dancers and duet solo dancers were standout songs on the album. Overall for a big band jazz , I thoroughly enjoy this album. Last song on the album: 5:55 , drum samples go off , great swing , with exceptional keys performance.

Great jazz album.

Charles Mingus- The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady Genre: Jazz Score: Strong 8 Favorite Songs: Track A- Solo Dancer, Track B- Duete Solo Dancers, Track C- Group Dancers, Medley

Loved it

Znači ovo je klasik. Ne slušam ga puno, ali gdjegod nabasam sa tim rejtinzima, ovaj album je tu.

Love Charles mingus

I normally don't enjoy jazz bc of all the horn instrument honking and seemingly randomness, but this was not too bad.

Transcendent.

That last suite is incredible on here and is my favorite out of everything on here. It has a mix of chaos, cartoonish devilishness, and a knack for silence. That said, everything else feels like a lead-up to that grand statement of this record.

3.6⭐️

Mingus n'est pas le jazzman le plus accessible, mais sont style orchestral est reconnaissable. Mingus Ah Um reste mon préféré, mais cet album est important dans sa discographie.

Wild and smooth, Mingus defines latter-day jazz for Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Soulful and clangy, like jazz should be.

Wow! How to include just about every prior genre in one piece: classical, jazz, big band and blues. Chordant, discordant, soft then jarring it's a rollercoaster ride. It's difficult to judge. Should it even be here? There are some other instrumental, classical-led albums and electronic albums so I guess so.

As always with Mingus, interesting from beginning to end.

Nice jazz fast and flowy, a bit screechy and sanctimonious, but has the mood

Took a while to hit its groove but really interesting, fantastic musicianship.

My first Mingus, not as good to me as Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue" but that's a hiiiggghhhh bar to pass. Great if you like jazz, terrible if you think jazz is meaningless noise

A powerful and sublime piece of music. Pushes the boundaries of jazz

This makes me understand why people enjoy Charles Mingus so much and is often listed as so influential.

Well, it's an album requiring a correct attitude from the listener. First time I played it as a background to work and it felt tiring, screechy, loud, cacophonic. Second time I gave all my attention to music, and it was absolutely worth it. Beautiful melodies, calm passages combined with virtuosity and stellar performance of all artists. Magnificent.

Niestety miałem okazję przesłuchać tylko raz, a zdecydowanie powinno sie wielokrotnie, żeby docenić dowolny album jazzowy. Wydawał się agresywny i dość chaotyczny, ale nie gubił. Dodatkowo wstawki i licki to w mojej opinii definicja stank jazzu.

Challenging but still pleasurable. Ellingtonian in a good way, though darker and more discordant, and maybe outright sexier, too.

Enjoyable random jazz squawkings. Some really cool stuff, and you can see where a lot of prog bands were ripping stuff off.

Jaaazzzzzzz. Fantastiskt.

A little too free for my taste, but still a great time.

This is dramatic, fire jazz. Playing on disruption, it throws me about, shifting tempo and style. Sometimes gentle, but never languid, and then a full acoustic assault, broke with moments of flamenco. Not what I expected, sometimes uncomfortable, always genius.

I think I like this. One of the more early takes on creating art out of music outside of classical, and it ended up being very enjoyable. Chaotic, but good. Favourites: "Solo Dancer", "Duete Solo Dancers"

I like this!

pretty cool start to finish

Nice, I love short big sounding jazz

Frantic. A very dark, cacophonous record. I appreciate the one brief reprieve of the flutes, but the addition of the flamenco guitar was a little jarring. Intense. Favorite track: "Group Dancers"

From the first few notes, I knew I would like this album. Great jazz sound. Cacophony broken by melody.
