One of the first and best hard rock albums
Rocks is my old favourite from 2003 ( I was 13 then). Lick and Promise is one of the great hidden gems in this. Steven & Joe are crazy in this.
I wore the grooves out on this album. Favorite. One of their best.
One of the greatest rock albums of all time. Aerosmith at their grittiest and sleaziest, Rocks grooves like a MF. Playlisted: Lick and a Promise ("he grabbed a guitar and a couple a beers, now the crowd will keep screaming for more") Nobody's Fault (one of my favorite songs EVER) Sick As A Dog (great riff written by Tom Hamilton)
Well, Physical Graffiti may be my favorite record of all time and seems to be these guys’ favorite too, so there’s a mutual admiration there. There’s a bit of Boston (the band, along with the city) here, along with some Priest-y touches and a power ballad (Home Tonight) I don’t think Zep would ever go near, so at least they’re not imitating only one band. In terms of a bunch or die hard rock and roll fans living out their dreams to try and measure up to their idols, I would call this a resounding success. And yes, it Rocks.
My favorite and best Aerosmith record.
It does !
Steven Tyler Joe Perry and the Boys are very Special always and forever
Quanti ricordi!
Rock album before they went pop
Just beautiful can't go wrong.
I’m a huge fan of Aerosmith from way back. As in, I know their career didn’t begin in 1987 with their Permanent Vacation album. While Aerosmith did good work from 1987 & on, they became legends with their 1st 4 albums, with Rocks being the last in that run. Rocks' creation was fueled by cocaine & heroin, which makes it amazing it was so damn good. Rocks begins with Back In the Saddle, arguably, their best song & each song from there is a banger, ending with my favorite Aerosmith ballad, Home Tonight. The album also contains the best lyric Joe Perry ever wrote, according to Steven Tyler. In the song Combination, which was written by Perry about the combo of heroin, cocaine & him, Perry wrote, "Walkin' on Gucci, wearing Yves St. Laurent Barely stay on 'cause I'm so goddamn gaunt.” Kurt Cobain named Rocks as one of the most influential albums in his and Nirvana’s career. Guns ‘N’ Roses, Metallica & Motley Crue all list Rocks as having a huge influence on their careers. Do yourself a favor, & check out Rocks.
Aerosmith were cooking on this. They were at the peak of their powers and excesses. Essential 70s sleazy Rock n Roll.
Classic from start to finish. The Toxic Twins at their best.
THIS album....Rocks! This album could be a greatest hits album! Back in the Saddle, Last Child, Rats in the Cellar....WOW what a group of songs for an opener. Sick as a Dog rocks out loud. Nobody's Fault is one hard apocalyptic masterpiece!
those first few notes put me right on Rockin Roller Coaster, and the hype and energy carried through the whole album. Very fun, feels like being a rock star, jammed the whole time. No ballads to break it up, just high octane energy. Loved it
Rocks is a genuinely fantastic album. This album managed to take everything that made Toys In The Attic great and amped it up to 11. The songs here still had that bluesy vibe which i enjoyed from Toys in The Attic but it really leans more towards a hard rock style which inspired loads of hard rock and heavy metal bands, even some on this very list from Guns N' Roses to Metallica to Nirvana. Every song was always a vibe and never at any point made the album feel like it was dragging on, in fact, this album went at the perfect length. There also are no bad songs in sight either. This is genuinely one of the best albums on this project and one i enjoyed so much. Best Song: Nobody's Fault Worst Song: Sick As A Dog
Very nice
Rock 'n' Roll 4ever!
Not much of an Aerosmith fan. I enjoy their music, certainly. But they’re not my everyday choice. However, this album is a great introduction to them for me.
- Easily their best .... and hardest ..... album of their output. They get the closest to the Stones here with their display of just nasty, filthy guitar rock & roll. Their masterpiece in my opinion, often overlooked. -
Sounds like classic Aerosmith.....except for that one song that sounds like Led Zeppelin.
Banger after banger.
My favorite Aerosmith album. It followed the awesome Toys in the Attic, and was even more raw and rocking. Much more more rock influences here than blues, but the blues riffs are still prevalent throughout. 4.5/5 = 5 stars for me. Really awesome album and should be heard before you die.
Kick ass
Aerosmith has so many hits, some of which are on this album. But there are some songs on this album I've never heard. Worth a listen!
I always love Aerosmith
This is Slash's favorite Aerosmith album, and one of his favorite albums of all time. That makes it the best Aerosmith album by default.
Kick ass album. 6 out of 9 tracks can be heard regularly on classic rock radio. I didn't need to listen to this banger again, but I did it anyway. 70's Aerosmith is tough to beat.
Fino fino
Liked it!
Upon receiving this, I uttered "... fuck." Aerosmith. The kind of band you'd like for a bit before burying them deep in the mind's recesses. Then, a bit of a thought process creeps in in regards to Rocks. It holds a sort of awed regard when it comes to the bands that came in its wake, the likes of Guns 'n' Roses and Nirvana who love this album. I had to dig in to understand why. Thirty plus minutes later and I understood why. For this thing is an unrelenting, fun ol' beast of a time. Aerosmith does not let up on Rocks and they keep you hooked, lined and sinker throughout. There are so many gems here, one would be remiss to at least discard one for the sake of doing so. Plenty in the Aerosmith fandom consider this to be their peak in creativity and, considering what came in its wake, I cannot help but agree. Rocks off!
🤘🏼
Cool
Good album not many of their bigger hits and pretty short
Can’t remember if I ever listened to this the whole way through. Deep cuts like “Combination” and “Nobody’s Fault” ring a bell, so odds are I did, as a wee lad of 17, when I was more interested in the 2003 Rolling Stone greatest album list. I might agree with that magazine’s assessment, that this is the best Aerosmith album. It probably doesn’t sound as vicious as it did in 1976, but the poppy harmonies, together with bitchin guitar riffs and Tyler’s vocal stylings, are what I like about the band, in concentrated form. Even "Get the Lead Out", the weakest track imo, still rollicks along and continues the momentum. HL: “Back in the Saddle”, “Sick as a Dog”, “Last Child”, “Nobody’s Fault” September 28, 2023
BEST SONGS: -Nobody's Fault -Home Tonight
great rock album
Really enjoyed
Pretty good Aerosmith album. I know a couple of tunes off this one but never heard the full thing - I think before this project the only full Aerosmith albums I'd heard were their later stuff that's basically hair metal. As it is, this more or less sounds like appetite for destruction... 10 years earlier. Some really, really cool riffs coming at me here. Holy shit, I never realised that Testament song was a cover. Fuck, it was gonna be an easy 4, but I think it's now a 5/5...
"Rocks" is the fourth studio album by American rock band Aerosmith. This album is known as a highlight of their career and capturing the band at their most raw and rocking despite their heavy drug use. It is without doubt a most rocking album. At the time, it received mixed reviews but later very positive reviews. And, it was a big commercial success in the US going quadruple platinum (4,000,000 copies). The album begins with the slow, creepy guitar build-up in "Back in the Saddle" which ends in a Steven Tyler scream. A bad-ass groove. Chunky guitar. Whips, clicking spurs and galloping horses. You can't go wrong singing about cowboys and sex. The first single "Last Child" opens with a classic heavy metal acoustic guitar. It transitions to a more rockin' sound. Tyler struttin'. Great guitar solo. "Rats in the Cellar" was their answer to "Toys in the Attic." This is harder and driving. Great layered guitars by Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. It's real life as things are coming apart within the band. "Sick as a Dog" is the most straight-forward rock song on the album. Catchy vocals and guitar chorus. A deeper cut and my favorite song on the album. "Nobody's Fault" is the band's favorite song on the album. It's heavier. Gun 'N' Roses were in the room and actually were quite literally as Slash cites this album as one of his inspirations. The album ends with the ballad "Home Tonight." Piano. Lap steel guitar. Foreshadowing of what was to come a decade later? This is great album. Focused. Rocks hard. Melody hooks. Great layered guitars. A tight, tight band despite what state they might have been in. I had to listen to "Toys in the Attic" again to verify but, without question, "Rocks" is their best album and a hard rock classic.
Yes. Now we're talking. Aerosmith. And this is a good album. No massive scene stealing songs, but all of them just rock.
Very happy about this one. First Aerosmith project i’ve heard but it kept me wanting more. Packed with very solid riffs and vocals, the album doesn’t really have any downs. Will definitely check out more of their discography.
Right up my alley with great production quality
Had expected either Toys in the Attic or Rocks or perhaps even both. The former album might be a bit stronger overall, but of course both are proper Aerosmith classics. Compare this to Pump (also in the 1001 list but just a solid rock album) and hear the difference!

5/5
This has been one of the more surprising listens so far. I apparently judged Aerosmith too harshly based on their later pop rock popularity, so I’ve slept on these early rock albums. After one listen, this is one of my favorite rock albums.
Alright I love this album and have listened to it heaps of times. Will listen again tonight and rate. Great
This is an all time fave
The best hard rock album of all time. AC who? Guns n what? A
A classic. Their first five albums rank up there with any of the other great bands. They should have stopped recording after Draw The Line. Everything after that fifth album was either passable or recorded just so they could cash the checks.
Discazo.
Obožavan!!
Aerosmith! Yay! I don't know this album. (Is it just me or does the cover look cheap?) I love the build at the beginning of Back in the Saddle and there are some horse noises I've never noticed before...and some yodeling! Last Child is one of the songs that defines Aerosmith for me --- an edgy, hard-rocking blues sound where Steven Tyler gets to sing and screech. The rest of the songs are totally new to me. I do love Combination --- the lyrics have some clever rhymes and the chorus is hella catchy. When Nobody's Fault started, I had to check to see if I was still listening to Aerosmith. It's more heavy metal than blues-rock. Get the Lead Out is fun. (But why are you showing me your fist? is it to show off your new finger tattoos?) I love me a song with some na, na, na's, like Lick and a Promise. Home Tonight is a nice piano-heavy power ballad whose melody made me think of Chicago's Saturday in the Park. This was great fun!
Awesome album. Most of the older Aerosmith stuff I know were the Greatest Hits, so the first two tracks were expectedly great (love the whinnying and clip clops in the opening of “Back in the Saddle”). The rest of the album I wasn’t so familiar with, but I loved it all! The four times I listened to it today had me digging all the songs. It’s Aerosmith. I should have been listening to this album for most of life.
This album rocks
This is just a really great rock and roll album. So good.
70's Aerosmith always slays.
Really enjoyed this album. Can definitely see their appeal.
Great album. Good old rock n' roll
3.5ish
I was really surprised how much this album rocked. I played it in the car, and jammed all the way home.
Might relisten
A classic album from a classic rock band.
"Rocks" does exactly what the title says. But "Toys In The Attic" is still the better album.
Great album!
There are parts of this album that are really quite good, and then a lot of really solid, dare I say, foundational rock. I don't think it'll sound exceptional to anyone 50 years(!) after it released, but it is very good and also very influential. Honestly, a pretty good inclusion on the list. Favorite Song(s): Back in the Saddle, Sick as a Dog
Good hard rock record
Music to smoke in the boys room to
Liked the instrumentation, especially the guitar As far as individual songs, there wasn't a huge standout here. This may be an unfair comment, due to some of their iconic tracks in other albums Enjoyed listening to this, would definitely have this in the background
Aerosmith Rocks, indeed! ★★★★
just some vanilla but great classic rock
3.5/5 rounded up
The title of this album says it all about you need to know it about. Aerosmith shows you who they are…good old Rock n’ Roll band from America. Lyrics with sexual undertones and references, hard driving guitar, bass and drums. Singing on the verge of screaming. Some fine Rock n’ Roll.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would
Excelente álbum! Ritmo maravilhoso, rock dos anos 70 no auge!
Solid rock and roll!
I didn’t know Aerosmith was this hard and fast, I think of them as more Ballady.
Surprisingly funky - I see some influence on the Red Hot Chili Peppers in this album. Good stuff, but lacks a killer highlight or two.
Good ol' American kickass rock and roll. The 70s were the best for a reason. This is one of them.
A very good album, not quite a 5! I knew a lot of these songs already, but it needed something more 4 ⭐️
A lot of good heavy rock 'n roll here, driven by solid bass and can't-miss guitar riffs. No real killer songs, though.
Great album which could get a higher score! It doesn't have the airplay of "Toys" but the songs are really good and get better each listen. This album sounds like it could have been the whole soundtrack to the movie "Dazed and Confused". high 4
Not much
Thanks to the person who call my attention to 'Nobody's Fault', it really stands out. 3 more themes I already knew and that's it I'm not giving a 5 mainly because I was never a big fan of theirs! But this is a solid 4/10
Solid 70s sleazy blues rock. What’s not to love…?
Remember when the USA wasn't a complete and total fascist wasteland?
As much as i hate aerosmith this album was awesome
Very solid album and a good introduction to Aerosmith
Back on the saddle is the theme for this years Wrestlemania so that was a win off the bat. The rest of the album was solid, a certified head-nodder if you will.
Dope
Wanted to give it 5 but a couple of skippable songs but overall pretty fun. He's definitely not a poet our Steven
There are a couple good radio hits on here and then honestly, the rest of the tracks were harder hitting and better musically than I anticipated. Lyrics were surprisingly trash at times though.
Klopt!
Los chicos malos de Boston hicieron que la continuación de Toys in the attic (incluye Rats in the Cellar como respuesta a este) fuera de tanto o mayor nivel aún. Abren con el clásico Back In The Saddle y ese fabuloso riff de Perry. Last Child es rock con ritmo funky (aún más en Get The Lead Out), suena a Led Zeppelin (y seguro que Lenny Kravitz se la sabe de memoria) y aún más con Nobody´s Fault. Rats In The Cellar suena a Alice Cooper (cuando eran algo serio). Combination cuenta con Perry cantando junto a Tyler. Mismo patrón, el ritmo es monolítico. Sick as a dog es otro clásico.
I brought a bunch of prejudice to this album. Just decades of irrelevant context that came after. The Revolution X arcade game, the Pink song, Steven Tyler abandoning that girl. There was a lot of reasons I groaned when I saw I had to put on Aerosmith this morning. But this album does in fact rock. They were just masters of the big fat 70's riff. It was recorded so well, sounded great on my car stereo. Future generations will have the ability to not have lived through the Aerosmith that came after and can just remember this if they want to. Definitely worth hearing
Well, well, well. It took long enough! With this, I have finally generated an album from every single band and artist with 3 or more albums on this list! It took nearly 900 days, but I've finally gotten there. Perhaps even more impressive is that I've now gotten every album on the list from 1976! The fact that I've gotten every album from a year in THE most heavily represented decade on the list with just over 200 albums left to go is not what I expected, but I'll take it. But enough about my album project. Let's talk about Aerosmith for a bit! They're an iconic band. I don't think you can really argue against that. You don't just get an entire Guitar Hero game for no reason. They're definitely one of those core "dad-rock" bands that don't really see a ton of praise by music nerds in the modern day, right alongside other "dad-rock" staples like AC/DC and Guns N' Roses. Am I miscalculating what "dad-rock" is in the modern day? I'm pretty sure the dads of today are listening to, like, Nickelback or something. I wouldn't know. I am young, but my dad's never been a rock guy. He'd always listen to hip-hop and contemporary r&b, so I don't really have a basis to go off of in that regard. What was I talking about again? Oh right, Aerosmith. I was talking about "dad-rock" because I happen to have a bit of a fondness for this type of music, so I was curious to see if Aerosmith appeals to me in the slightest. Turns out they do! Rocks is a pretty good album. The riffs are great. Joe Perry's a pretty strong guitarist. Steven Tyler might be a total creep-a-zoid, but he knows how to put his weirdly large mouth to good use. That sounds bad. What I'm saying is that he's a good vocalist. The writing could be much much worse. The album's got some good rocking tunes on it. "Back in the Saddle" is an exciting opener. Very fitting as the opener, I must say. "Last Child" sounds like it would be problematic by the title, but it's actually not. It's also pretty cool. "Nobody's Fault" is cool. This thing is good, okay? I can see why some people aren't big into this band, but they've made a good first impression for me with this album. I enjoyed it. Light 4/5.
I enjoyed this. The music is excellent, Tyler’s vocals are mostly good (a few exceptions), and the mood is fun. Great rhythms and beats.
Fun! Love the camp of glam rock.
Growing up I owned this and Toys in the Attic. I listened to Toys a lot more. In retrospect, this one's so much better.
Very basic. But it's a good basic.
good instrumental and vocal, album length and aesthetic, just not my usual vibe highlights: Last Child
I definitely needed something more straightforward today, so this album really did it for me. Not a whole lot more than a fairly classic Hard Rock album, but that's really all a classic Hard Rock album needs to be.
Sehr guter Rock aus den 70ern. Auch heute noch gut hörbar. 4/5
Rocks is the Aerosmith album where they decide they are just going to rock. While Toys in the Attic had a few songs that were born to be hits, Rocks has songs that were hits (Back in the Saddle and Last Child) because the band forced you to like the songs. Aerosmith has turned it all the way up to 11 and decided even if the material on here isn't on par with Toys in the Attic, they are going to perform the shit out of the songs. The band doesn't even pretend to top Sweet Emotion or Walk This Way, which probably gives this album more rock-cred than it helped with sales. Aerosmith can be a punchline these days, and possibly for good reason, but Rocks is where the band decided they had drugs, they had guitars and were going to not overcomplicate it too much. My favorite songs: Back in the Saddle Last Child Combination Sick as a Dog Nobody's Fault Home Tonight
Back in the saddle is an electrifying opener. The whole album feels comforting and nostalgic in a strange way. Like a cool person that wants to introduce you to Aerosmith, but without the songs that you've actually heard a thousand times. Keeps the spirit of the band without being too in your face about it. Favorite is Nobody's Fault.
Funny how my group got this album only a few days after we got Toys In The Attic. This album's that classic Aerosmith sound, but it's not as great as the previously mentioned album. Solid 4 Stars.
Solid addition to the annals of boogie rock and aerosmiths catalog. I think there are better Aerosmith albums, but this is a definite rocker.
Very surprising to me, I always hated Aerosmith. I was going to skip this one, but two days later I saw it in Kurt Cobain's top 50 and got curious. You can really hear the influence on grunge bands, especially Mudhoney. Very solid 8/10
It was my first time listening to this album. I had heard Toys in the Attic before, and I actually prefer Rocks. It feels rougher and more aggressive, with a raw, slightly garage-like edge that really stands out to me. “Back in the Saddle” sounds especially gritty and cool, and “Nobody’s Fault” takes it even further — Joe Perry’s solo is crushing, almost straight-up heavy metal. I had always associated Aerosmith with songs like “Walk This Way” or their later ballads, so I didn’t realize they once sounded this heavy.
Iconic album. Tremendous.
Hoary old rockers they might be now, but they were far from that in 1976, I can tell you. This is a rollicking good album; no major hits came from it, but that isn't a hindrance - some fine riffage is on show here. You know the drill: turn it on, turn it up, and ROCK OUT!
Pretty solid album. No absolute standouts, but no shockers. Just good solid rock
I've never been a huge Aerosmith fan, mainly because I became aware of them as a kid in the 80s and that stuff kind of sucks. But their earlier music was some solid 70s rock. 3.5 rounding up
Probably goes down better with a Budweiser and a Marlboro Red, but pretty good regardless.
Smooth, chill, nice to listen to. Lovely!
21/01/2026 It's nice to hear something from Aerosmith that doesn't have Run DMC in it. Spotify listeners: 25.2 million
Some peak Aerosmith
- peak vocals - catchy asl - classic aerosmith sound
Hell yeah! Something that’s more in my wheelhouse of music, although a band that unfortunately I’ve neglected to listen to previously apart from the obvious few tracks. Starting off strong with back in the saddle. A bit repetitive, but it’s a fun track nonetheless. Last Child is a bit of a change of vibe, but I love the groove of it. The guitar in Rats in the Cellar is super fun. I loved Sick as a Dog and will probably be listening to that song a lot in the future! Nobody’s fault continued the list of very enjoyable songs. Lick and a Promise reminded me of something that would be on a soundtrack to an 80s movie. I loved it. To close, Home Tonight had a lovely little nostalgic vibe to it. I think it was a perfect closer to a solid album. Overall, 4/5 ⭐️!! A great album with multiple songs I will come back to. Honestly I don’t have a lot to say on this one as it was just genuinely good. Favourites: lick and a promise, sick as a dog, home tonight Least favourites: don’t really have any 10/1089
Aerosmith Greatest Hits is their best album. But that doesn't qualify for this list. Rocks starts off with two songs from the Greatest Hits album "Back In The Saddle" and "Last Child" (the only 2 songs represented on the greatest hits.) "Sick As A Dog" could have been on the short list of songs to add to the greatest hits... and possibly "Nobody's Fault". "Get The Lead Out" seemed like an early working demo for "Rag Doll" (anyone else hear the similarities?) The hidden gem is "Home Tonight". If they had made a video of "Home Tonight" with Alicia Silverstone this would have been a hit song for Aerosmith (unfortunately for Aerosmith... Alicia Silverstone was born the same year this album was released and MTV didn't start until 1981.)
early classic from a long-lived band.
Highlights: Last Child, Sick as a Dog
Rats in the Cellar rocked. Back in the Saddle is always good. Everything else filled out the album nicely.
This was actually quite a solid album. Very much like a template for Guns and Roses. No standout tracks, but no duds either. I actually feel that this is strong enough for four stars, which quite honestly surprised me.
"Back In the Saddle" topka, ale pędzące przez 4min "Rats In The Cellar" czy zamykające "Home Tonight" też sztos, tak jak parę innych utworów.
This album simply... rocks. It was fun and I was suprised how quickly it ended.
I'd love to hate this because of the caricature of itself that Aerosmith turned into in the '80s and onward, but their '70s output is undeniably pretty great.
This album is really good. It's very enjoyable. Not a great one, but sure a very decent one with such good songs. Although, it's not much my cup of tea, so I don't have much to say, but I can see myself listening to this album from time to time.
Sometimes I think Aerosmith is overrated because they didn’t do anything new. Other times I think they don’t get the credit they deserve. Steven Tyler’s voice is incredible. This album starts off super strong but isn’t able to reach that level of rock again. The album still rocks.
70s Aerosmith was so cool. This undoubtedly Rocks.
Starts off like a bat out of hell - that opening bit of back in the saddle is as iconic an opening of any song - much less track - that you're ever going to hear. I think it slowed down a bit at the end, and probably deserves 3.5 stars. but I gave the goddamned Beatles 3 stars yesterday and that doesn't hold a candle to this album, so it gets bumped half a star by virtue of not being the Beatles.
Is this a masterpiece that redefines the aural senses from top to bottom? No. Is this a great rock record that will please almost everyone on the patio while day drinking and playing horseshoes? Yes. And that is good enough for me.
3.5
Went through an Aerosmith phase about a year ago. Still holds up.
I have not listened to much Aero outside of what gets played on the radio. I enjoyed this album. The guitar and vocals were solid, not too much of the screaming Tyler vocals so that was nice.
Gladly give it this after all the garbage I have listened to in the past week(s)
maybe this is getting a boost due to some of the super lame electronica music we've had lately, but it's a decent listen. Back in the Saddle is a great opener, & it's all finished before you get bored. 3.5 stars
Nice
Monster of a classic album from a classic band. Saw them in the 90s, they kicked ass.
Rock. And. Roll. Steven Tyler’s vocals are one of a kind and Joe Perry slays! Rock on Aerosmith!
Still don’t really love classic rock but this was enjoyable.
I liked this more than I thought I would.
Balls to the wall, low down, funked up sexual ass rock and roll. Boogie woogie, bootin' scootin', rootin' and tootin', star gazed and neon light dazed. This album feels like a bender. 3 nights of black out boozin and coming home to the one you truly love. Damn good album. I do wish the lyrics had some more substance but with Steven's cold bloode rock god swagger its all fair. Perry's sleazy tone and and those Huge drums. Damn fine Aerosmith albo. A highlight of 70s rock
8/10 rock n roll
i fell asleep on the bus while listening to this, but rose part that i heard in my consciousness were good
Rock rock rock Pomeeeeeeelo 7/10
Funny that the most streamed song was the one I hated most lol. Tyler's voice on that one is just so screechy. Album got better from there, though. Just some good classic rock through and through.
Yup. That’s Aerosmith alright.
IT's Aerosmith and some of their iconic songs. Great album.
Sounds kinda like a generic hard rock album - it's good. It might be unfair because I've heard a lot similar things that probably copied Aerosmith. Last Child is great, Nobody's Fault - love the guitar.
A lot of songs I'm not familiar with on this album. Back In The Saddle - 8/10. Very recognizable intro. Classic Aerosmith sound. Great outro. Last Child - 8/10. Didn't know the title of this one, but as soon as I heard the intro, I recognized it. More classic Aerosmith. Rats in the Cellar - 7/10. Solid classic rock. Hadn't heard this one before, but it's good. Combination - 6/10. Not the strongest, but not bad. Sick as a Dog - 7/10. Solid. Classic Aerosmith musicianship. Nice bridge. Nobody's Fault - 7/10. More of that typical Aerosmith sound. Not a complaint. Get the Lead Out - 7/10. Nice intro. Solid song. Lick and a Promise - 8/10. This one kinda cooks. Home Tonight - 6/10. Not the best, but not bad. Overall Rating - 4/5. Definitely a solid album.
Stadium rock and roll - sleazy, sly, flirty, full of innuendo
Back when Aerosmith didn't sound like a parody of themselves. "Back in the Saddle" is killer 70s gold, and although nothing else in the album lives up to it, it's still got some great Aerosmith variety. "Sick as a Dog" was not my cup of tea, but pretty much everything else was decent. "Home Tonight" especially was a great way to finish it off, and "Lick and a Promise" made for a good time, as well. Of course, I probably would have been just as entertained if I just listened to the opening track and didn't bother with the other 30 minutes.
Really like the general vibe but quite samey so not blow your socks off stuff. No real low points though honestly. Could listen from start to finish again no problem - short but sweet. Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song - last child Least fav- lick and a promise
Not quite as good as its predecessor, but damn close. 4/5
Love it. Own it.
Men helt ok, for all del.
Never really a fan of Aerosmith, but this really impressed me and opened my ears.
Good old classic rock
Despite being released during their big partying days - they are well and truly in the zone. Whilst there aren't any songs I immediately recognise it's a solid outing by Aerosmith. Best: Back in the Saddle Worst: Get the Lead Out 3.5 Stars
Good songs
-pretty good album
When you're in the mood for a period piece.
34 minutes a blues rock mastery.
Back in the Saddle was already on my Liked Songs. Added Last Child, Rats in the Cellar, and Lick and a Promise. Solid 70s boogie-rock.
Their best album.
I would say 3.5. I love Aerosmith, but I like Toys in the Attic better, and also their later stuff.
Starts out wicked strong then deteriorates, much like the band's career. I liked it better than Toys, which was a solid 3, so this is a 3.5.
This actually shredded a lot harder than I was expecting and I liked it quite a bit. It comes screaming out of the gates and I think this was the only song on the album I'd actually ever heard before. Steven Tyler's voice is pretty incomparable, and Joe Perry's guitar work on this is really really good and maybe I've underrated him. Great riffs, great solos, musically interesting enough moments that keep it from feeling too same-y. Loved the vocal harmonies especially on Sick as a Dog. I certainly wouldn't call this heavy metal, but I can see how this sort of bridged the gap between Zeppelin (see: Nobody's Fault) and later metal and hard rock acts (I see seeds of things like GnR here as well). Loved to be pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this overall.
This has always been one of my favorite rock n roll records. Raw, uninhibited, and indulgent. A definitive art piece from a definitive decade in the history of American popular music. While Toys In the Attic tends to get more attention, this is the album I believe showcases the very best of Aerosmith during their first peak of success. Almost how “Psycho Circus”, KISS’s 1998 comeback tragedy, showcases the talentlessness of the band KISS. Steven Tyler is a master lyricist, even if some of his material didn’t age well in the eyes and ears of public opinion, and the wide range of musical influence on this record makes it stand out in their vast catalogue. This is one of 3 Aerosmith albums I consider a practically perfect American rock album.
Very good album before all went sour. One of their best
Another one I'm very familiar with. I had the cassette tape in the 80s and listened a lot while driving.
Good
A hard rock record with surprising punch. Songs like back in the saddle, rats in the cellar, and sick as a dog are testaments to the bands songwriting chops and influence. A strong showing that while not perfect manages to stand strong almost 50 years later
Aerosmith. Solid rockers. I still can't listen to Aerosmith without mentally seeing Steven Tyler's damned trout mouth, but it's good music. This one comes out strong with "Back In the Saddle" and lets you off easy with "Home Tonight" like it's a last call. Solid all the way through, but through the middle it all sounds the same. My Rating: 4/5
Another Aerosmith showing, their 4th album this time. My previous was Pump. I'll say upfront that I liked Pump better. This is still a pretty solid old rock and roll album though. The guitar is fun as hell. Lots of solos and nice riffs. While this Rocks has some classics, it didn't completely sell itself to me. A couple of the songs were kind of weird. It's pretty short and felt like the songs had less substance. Yeah the guitar is always good, but the album still fell short for me. Standouts are "Back In The Saddle," "Last Child," and "Combination" I wouldn't play the whole album on repeat, but I think it's solid enough to get a 4/5 for me. Pretty groovy and a fun listen but not an all time classic.
Starts out really strong then feels like they slowly run out of gas as the album goes on as if it were recorded live
This was a good album, I had never heard most of these songs before so that was cool
It's hard for me to review an Aerosmith album without bias, they were the first band I fell in love with as a kid and they were my first concert! Steven Tyler is the best frontman in rock (sorry Freddie) and I've always loved his vocal style. Aerosmith never fail to give us good ol' rock and roll while keeping the sound unique
This was a great classic rock album.
Didnt realize how hard Aerosmith went. I think I just never thought I'd like them due to the overplayed songs not being my favorite, but alas, I did not like those songs solely due to them being overplayed. (Back in Saddle, not a bad song, but definitely heard IM BACKKKKK in SADDLE AGAAINNN, one too many times to the point of annoyance). Rats in the Cellar was definitely a favorite of mine.
Maybe I should have played Guitar Hero Aerosmith Listened to this album when going through The Rolling Stones top 500 & I’ve liked it more each time. Also…9 songs, 34 minutes, it might be getting a 4 for that reason alone! Get in, get the lead out!
This is the best of the Aerosmith albums I've heard so far, begrudgingly. This rocks pretty hard TBH.
Can’t help it. Solid album from the Toxic Twins an company. Probably their heaviest album. It would go downhill from here on out.
Aerosmith feels like the missing jump between something like Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones and Van Halen or Guns N Roses. They have their own flavor that doesn't quite sit with either, but in between them. A bit of a missing link.
Good. Just goid
Wowza! I am shocked at this album. I always equated Aerosmith to a slightly heavier Journey but this album truly rocks. Really nice heavy sound that blew away my expectations. Will I deep dive Aerosmith after this? Probably not. But I’ll sure listen to this one again.
Aptly named album. Really wanted to shit on Aerosmith coming into this but they made me eat that shit. Glad to do it too, half this album is getting saved in a variety of playlists.
the most distilled Aerosmith album. The first two tracks are killer, the rest of the album is more fine than good. But it lives up to its namesake probably a 3.75, but I'll give it a bump since lord knows they did plenty
Not my favorite Aerosmith album, but far from their worst. This one feels like a bit of a lull in their discography. Past and future projects are more exciting. Besides its lackluster quality, no complaints. 4/5
Great rock and roll that got some good rotation in the peelers.
8/10 super fun, and definitely a classic for the era
Ok this was a lot of fun and so nice to hear music not take itself so seriously.
Fav songs: Back in the Saddle; Last Child Solid album from beginning to finish. Nice and tight length too.
Decent album. Some bangers in here!
Back in the Saddle Last Child
Yup, sounds like an Aerosmith album. Loses points for not having any of their bangers, but I still enjoyed it.
real solid rock music, back in the saddle is one of the coolest songs ever
Not a dud on this one. Even Home Tonight is a solid ballad with some balls. Obviously. Last Child proves that Walk this Way wasn't a fluke. Solid funk once again. Sick as a Dog is the great Aerosmith sleeper track. Just perfect.
A great rock album, but there are better ones
This is a great one, great guitar work and vocals. I really enjoyed it. Some of their best songs are on this in my opinion.
It's a decent enough album (Steven Tyler being a creep aside), but honestly the only song I really like and remember after listening is Back In The Saddle. Joe Perry is a hell of a guitar player.
Great rock!
Ok I just saw a typo in my previous rating (Smashing Pumpkins) which was between a 3.5 and a 4, not a 3 and a 3.5. This one is also between a 3.5 and a 4, but today I have had more time to listen and it’s a good solid rock album.
first album i’ve heard by them, was really enjoying it, would definitely go back and it’s a good length to just listen to a collection of great tracks
Last Child and Back In The Saddle rock so hard it makes up for the rest of the album
Excellent. No notes
Joe Perry best work, probably Aerosmiths best album.
4 stars
“Rocks” rocks; one of Aerosmith’s better albuns
Got a point bc I like other aerosmith
One of the best hard rock albums of the 70s.
This is good and doesnt sound like Aerosmith
Rocks by Aerosmith When Aerosmith were good.
yeah i was excited to get this one. “back in the saddle” is a great opener. “rats in the cellar” had GREAT instrumentals. the rest was all very similar BUT i really REALLY vibed with it. 4/5!
Muy bueno
Two classics to open the album, and the rest is pretty good. 4 stars or B+.
It's crazy these guys would put out an album every year, on top of extensive touring. This was really good I thought.
Surprisingly enjoyed this! Obviously some hard rock and some sex appeal screaming throughout but I thought it'd be a lot more offensive
I only have greatest hits or best of albums by this lot so this is the first time I have listened to a proper album by them. And I've got to say I can see why they are such a big band. I knew the first two tracks and they are both extremely good most of the rest of the album was good, but standard fare. Then along came A Lick And A prayer, another superb track. Is it something I would buy? Yes, if I saw it, (or to be honest, any other Aerosmith album) I would definitely consider buying it. So, it's got to be worth a 4.
This may be my favorite Aerosmith album, and a new discovery for me.
Whole bunch of stones, potentially rolling
not a huge fan of aerosmith so i wasn't thrilled to get this one, but i was actually pleasantly surprised! this is a fun hard rock album. it's got some teeth but not overly so. steven tyler gets a little screamy and screechy and his vocals almost border on some sort of metal vocal. the instrumentation is pretty good as well. solid album!
3,5/5 men gir 4
Actually? Kinda great. I was going into this thinking it was gonna be pretty lame, but I guess I underestimated Aerosmith.
A classic for its time
"Back in the Saddle" is off to a good start. Something about those shrieks is hitting. The riff on "Last Child" along with the vocals are diabolical. They've got me moving in my office chair. I didn't pay attention to which song was which too much after this, but I loved "Lick and a Promise". This album was fun rock and roll the entire time, and it was heavier than I expected it to be at times. 8/10
It was fine I have learned I’m a big Aerosmith fan!
Amazing album but Steven Tyler’s lyrics brings it down to 4/5.
The worry was that after the one-two punch of Back In The Saddle and Last Child, that the rest of this album would never maintain that level of exquisite, dirty hump rock. Of course it doesn't quite manage that, but it's still a fine attempt. I found plenty of good, fun riffery in the remaining seven tracks and Nobody's Fault in particular is an absolute gem. At least there's not much risk of overthinking this one; it's consistently exactly what you expect it to be.
I'm surprised how heavy this album was. I mostly know the later "softer" Aerosmith, so this was unexpected but interesting.
There's something brilliant about this album, and it's most likely due to it's rawness and simplicity. Good guitar riffs, good jams, not overly complicated. This was a breath of fresh air.
Solid 70s rock album. There is little to complain about here, so I won't.
This band fucking rocks.
Raw
Aerosmith are great and this is really fun. Back In The Saddle is an all time banger
classic aerosmith but id rather listen to toys in the attic.
6,77
Kind of a jam.
Hell yes! Bought this new in 8th grade, and eagerly made the transition to flashy hair rock. Within a few years, I’d moved on. But in that short time, life was good as gold! Concerts, dances, weed, and hot chicks… best time of my life! Now I spin it on rare occasions, and it’s good… on occasion.
A great sounding rock record.
Classic 70s rock album packed with great tunes. This album is right up my street.
I really liked this album. It does help that this album has my 2 favorite Aerosmith songs on it, but the rest of the album did not disappoint either. Great album. Liked Songs: Back In the Saddle, Last Child, Sick As A Dog Least Favorite: Nobody's Fault
Brilliant album
I don't know this Aerosmith that well but I can see the appeal.
Solid rock album.
Nice rock sound. Not a super unique album but interesting
I don’t dive into a lot of Aerosmith beyond the greatest hits and whatever blasts while I’m strapped into the Rockin’ Rollercoaster, but Rocks was a pleasant surprise. Gritty, loud, and packed with swagger, it’s got more to offer than just the radio singles. Tracks like “Back in the Saddle” and “Last Child” still hit hard, and the whole album has that raw, bluesy edge that defined their early years. Bonus star just for being part of one of the best rides Disney ever put together. Fast, fun, and loud — just like this album. Favorite song: Rats in the Cellar Least Favorite song: Last Child
I like this one. It's definitely Aerosmith, but more leaning into rock rather than ballads. Overall solid music.
Classic rock is classic. Some rocks harder than others. DID YA SEE WHAT I DID THERE?
This is a very fitting title.
Great album, one of their better ones. I prefer the Dirty Honey cover of Last Child though.
Who doesn't love a power ballad? Who doesn't love a little sleaze? A slick riff? Okay that could be the formula for a boring '70s hits radio station. But these guys invented that formula, so they get a bit of cred. A ton of cred. So all those kids in the 70s (me) turned their cassettes in the car or record player in the bedroom up to ear-splitting levels and just fucking rocked out. You can blame us or get on board.
4.5/5
One of the single hardest album openings of all time. A long-time karaoke standard for me.
3.5 - I was expecting a bit more tbh and it just creeps into the 4's as I started to get into it a bit more towards the end
Pretty chill classic rock, I didn’t know any of these tracks but I’m familiar with Aerosmith’s sound. No songs really stood out to me as amazing but none were bad, 4/5
have enjoyed every song on the album so far, it just feels like pure rock and i love it. second half wasn’t as good except for the last song which rlly hit.
I liked this, solid rock album. No song stood out a lot though so I'm not sure if I'd listen again.
Guitar heavy jams With classic vocal wailing Feels so effortless
3.5 stars. It’s fun for parties but I wouldn’t give it more of a serious listen over other music that I enjoy more.
Good album however very short in length. Steven Tyler’s voice always kills it.
Aerosmith has some jams
Holy hell this rips!!!
It's a rock n roll album...not bad not great.
I think I was in the perfect mood for this - I loved it. Great rock songs, the production sounds brilliant and all the songs are pleasant. No particular standouts but not a bad thing when all the songs are solid 8s. I think a hit would bring this to a five but I'll call it a 4 overall
I was expecting to not love thid and that it might be like the AC/DC album that I didn't like, but then Back in the Saddle kicks you in the teeth and this album flies. These guys know how to make a catchy as hell hook and the instrument work is much closer to Guns N Roses than AC/DC. This was fun, though not amazing, and I really enjoyed it.
I genuinely didn't notice I was listening to this until it autoplayed a song by a different band. Not sure what that says but it's not bad I guess
OK, a little dated. Probably ground breaking at the time and still a solid rock album but sadly not really standing the test of time
Solid early rock!
This shit went harder than I could ever have predicted. Blurred the lines of classic rock that is too technical and too dumb beautifully.
Solid hard rock album. Last Child is a banger.
Classic Aerosmith
Great rock album
Aerosmith is so good at cranking out bangers. I don't think Rocks was as strong as the other two Aerosmith albums on this list (Toys and Pump), not to mention plenty of other Aerosmith albums that I know. Are the songs still great? Yes! They go hard, and Steven Tyler's signature vocals are perfect. The guitar, drums, bass, harmonica are all working flawlessly. You've got great lyrics in songs like "Last Child" and "Nobody's Fault". I couldn't ask for a better, more energized opener than "Back in the Saddle." I hate to complain, but I just don't know why Rocks was included over other Aerosmith albums.
I pretty much liked all the songs on the album.
Decent enjoyed it more than I expected to. First 3 songs were bangers. Kind of dipped after that but some strong moments. 7/10
oh! i just figured it out! its called rocks because there are multiple rock music by the way it owns
80% Fav: Last Child, Rats in the Cellar Least: N/A Must-Hear? Sure
4/5 A remarkably consistent hard rock album. Consistently great, that is. Not much on here to blow your mind but an enjoyable listen for sure. Back In the Saddle 4/5 Last Child 5/5 Rats In The Cellar 4/5 Combination 4.5/5 Sick As A Dog 4.5/5 Nobody's Fault 4/5 Get The Lead Out 3.5/5 Lick And A Promise 3/5 (LEAST FAV) Home Tonight 5/5 (FAV)
Really cool
What a different Aerosmith this is than Pump. 13 years earlier, crustier, and they sound hungrier. Back In the Saddle is a great way to start an album. Ominous riff before the bottom drops out into a ripper. Production sounds sort of like shit by modern standards -- very flat -- but it works in a sense that you could imagine jamming this while joy riding in a Chevelle, a la Dazed and Confused. One two punch out of the gate with Last Child. Where Back In the Saddle is in your face and propulsive, Last Child is a confident funky strut. Tyler's vocals are a bit rough, but hey that's Aerosmith. The riff on Nobody's Fault sounds suspiciously similar to Walk This Way. A bit proggy in the arrangement on this one -- kind of reminds me vaguely of some Umph. I'm admittedly not a huge Aerosmith fan, but this album was pretty inoffensive, straightforward classic rock. It had several moment of greatness (Back In the Saddle, moments on Nobody's Fault) and what wasn't "great" was fine. Soft 4 / 5.
I like a fair amount of Aerosmith across the years, but they're not my favorite by any stretch, and I was not into "Toys in the Attic" as an album, so I was surprised how much I liked "Rocks." A few of the tracks, like "Last Child," I already knew and liked but didn't know the name of until now. Aerosmith's sound here is a unique crossroads of influence; at various times you can hear their big influences like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones (not to mention their contemporaries ZZ Top), but also those they influenced like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns 'n Roses. Rocks isn't the best rock album of the 70s, or even 1976, but it's full of tasty funk and blues tinged riffage. It's mostly what I like about Aerosmith and little of what I don't.
