Reviews (page 3 of 7)

what is it about brit pop where you just know it's brit? idk but this was fun drivey soundtrack music

It has a nice oasis vibe to it. Will definitely listen to more

Britpop meets Madchester grooves.

Bravi The Charlatans, non vi dimenticherò. 4 abbastanza giusto.

So wait...is this Oasis? No? This is not Oasis? This is Oasis, right? Ok, with that out of the way, it's actually really good. I love the guitar riffs. These are really great pop/rock songs. I mean if it was Oasis...and I'm still not sure it's not...this would be one of the good Oasis records.

A fun listen. If not for these guys, there's no MGMT, Kasabian....

Liked the bass line (piano / keyboard) of One to Another a lot. Liked 'Get On It' quite a bit too, great buildup. Didn't love the vocals

Sounds like Oasis or maybe Oasis sounds like them. Good sound anyways.

One of these stars is due to nostalgia. I like the Charlatans but they don't exactly excite me.

It's fine. Solid 90s alt rock. It doesn't seem that anything about this album is super special.

Pretty good! Favourite tracks were With No Shoes and Tellin' Stories.

i really like the sound

= 80/100 great qualities, not exactly always my style

Seems very good. Definitely worth another listen.

Ganz nett! Der Hit "the only one I know" ist leider nicht dabei. Oasis lässt grüßen. Macht Lust auf Indiefilme aus UK mit Musikboys in Skinnyjeans.

Kinda emo

Good stuff

Buen pop noventero

I liked this, but it wasn’t particularly memorable.

Solid, enjoyable Britpop album.

Sounds like we’ll executed mid-90s Britpop.

Pues sí me gustó. Suena muy a muchas cosas de las que sobaban en ese entonces en eso lares, pero tienen su marca personal. Escucharlo es como meterte en Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels.

Glad I didn’t skip this one.

That's sure some Britpop. I didn't love it, but it's not the worst I've heard.

Muy chulo

This was fine. Nothing to special but also not terrible.

My first thought was that while this was decent, it kind of felt like refried Oasis. Maybe UK bands are like UK dishes...gotta find another way to make the same meat and potatoes? Overall, this isn't bad, but I didn't find myself gravitating towards any tracks except for the two instrumentals...which kinda sounded like refried Beastie Boys instrumentals from the early 90s. Easily a 3.

Ok band that I never really listened to in the 90s, I more gravitated to pulp, blur and oasis, they to me sound like a laid back version of oasis, solid Brit pop album that didn't reach the height of some other bands of that time.

Un britpop clásico, bastante en el estilo Oasis. Está bien, pero tampoco sale de la media. 6/10

Very 90's British music

what started playing in my head when i bought my first vintage real leather red ferrari jacket back in trieste

One to Another is a pretty cool track. I like their sound.

watered down oasis...think ill just listen to oasis. but omg my mad fat diary theme??!! extra point for that

A pleasant Britpop album that lacks the replayability of peak Oasis or Blur. Still an enjoyable listen. Would have given 3*, but I'll bump it up to 3.5* just to keep upsetting the American centric reviewers who are angry at the inclusion to British bands they haven't heard of.

Na 3. Ani dobre, ani słabe.

Not sure what to make of Ian Gallagher or Liam Brown

Pretty chill, fun Britpop in the same vein as Oasis. I’d rather just listen to Oasis, though. “One to Another” and “How High” are great!

Like Oasis but with more calories.

Have you heard of oasis Have you listened to everything oasis has ever put out? Have you listened to so much oasis that you think yourself I need more oasis? Look no further than this album The charlatans sound exactly like an oasis cover band. They sound like a band that was inspired directly by oasis... and if you go to iTunes and you look up oasis and click on their inspired by playlist, sure enough there is a song from this album on that playlist But to be clear, this is not oasis This is the charlatans and I can hear Liam Gallagher saying dryly "charlatans, that's a fitting name"

Not unlistenable but not particularly memorable either. 2.5/5 charitably rounded to 3.

321/1001 The Charlatans - Tellin' Stories Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❓ The Charlatans are a band that I feel I should like more than I actually do. Whilst there's nothing inherently wrong with the album, it never really captured me on re-listen this morning.

The pop accessibility is almost in constant conflict with nasal/whiny Oasis vocal styling, and while this is enjoyable enough, it can wear thin. This was most obvious when I found myself enjoying the instrumental track.

This was like a better Oasis, which I think tells more about my feelings about Oasis rather than The Charlatans. I'd give it an extra half star actually, but 4 seems too much. It's not annoying at least.

alright

The first half of this album felt very 90's and then the 70's called and hijacked the last half. Feels like some tracks would have definitely been on the radio during its heyday but I can't recall making mixtapes with The Charlatans on it.

Just really wasn't in the mood for this one today. Sounded like a basic rock record. nothing special.

Pretty generic. There was an instrumental track late in the album that I was digging. The rest of it wasn’t very memorable. 6/10 Pretty Good

When I started this project, I never expected to reference Mark Radcliffe and the boy Lard (Marc Riley) so much. But here, once again, is a song I remember more fondly through the Shirehorses' parody that the original: North Country Boy by The Charlatans becoming West Country Boy, featuring the line "You scrumpy-guzzling, carrot-crunching tosspot"... ...anyway, I enjoy The Charlatans but they have never set my world alight. And so this album gets a very middling review. It's alright, but I don't find it sets itself apart from other artists of the Britpop era. Part of that problem for me, is how much Tim Burgess's voice reminds me of Liam Gallagher. I probably should enjoy this more than I do, but I don't have the emotional connection to it that I have with other bands of the era, as I didn't really listen to them then. I have a stronger attachment to bands like Joyrider, who were nowhere near as popular, but I bought a lot of their singles as a teenager. I do like the singles from this though, particularly One To Another, which has a great catchy riff. How High is also pretty fun. Generally fine. It would get a 3.5 in a world of half marks, but: 3/5

It's fine. I have nothing bad to say and am simultaneously quite uninspired.

Expected more from this. Was easy enough listening but ready for it to finish

Oli entuudestaan tuttu bändi, muutama biisi on jo omalla listalla. Kyseiseltä albumilta oli kans yks tuttu. Muutama uus biisi löysi tiensä mun listalle, mut levy aika mid. How high oli entuudestaan tuttu, ihan ok biisi. Osa biisestä liian pitkiä kyl, tuntu välillä et yritetty saada pakolla sisältöä levylle. Olis voinu pari biisiä olla minuutin lyhyempiä. Solid levy mutta ei mikään mestariteos. One to another kova biisi mut 3/5 on kyllä aika osuva arvio

2.9 3x catch up on 5/18

liked, nothing special

Thoroughly enjoyable, barely memorable 90s brit-rock.

I know a few of them from younger days, and they're fine, but I really didn't get on with this. I'm not a fan of Tim Walker's vocal delivery, and honestly there didn't seem to be a lot of dynamic to the album. One To Another is enough of a banger to raise it above a 2.

Wasn't really my thing. Definitely fell into that 90s britrockpop feel.

This was ok, pretty standard 90s indie rock. Nothing offensive but nothing riveting either

Decent 90s indie rock. It's likeable enough but there's nothing here that makes me want to seek out any more either.

This band REALLY wishes they were Oasis

In *my* 1001 best albums. Yeah - could well be, the album positively ooooooooozes "baggy" and there's not many more tracks guaranteed to get me to STRUT down the road than "One to Another". The best 1001 ever? Feels unlikely.

I was a student in Britain in the late 1990s, so obviously I've danced to One to Another at a lot of indie discos, but beyond that, the Charlatans were never a band I could get that excited about. This hasn't really changed my mind - it's fine, I quite enjoyed it, but I'm unlikely to actively seek it out again. (It's also made me wonder if part of the reason I never fully embraced them is Tim Burgess' voice - it's like Liam Gallagher with twice the whine and half the conviction.)

this was fun but not gonna remember much of it tbh

The forgotten side of britpop

This album is... well, not my thing. And, actually, it's something pretty bland and uninteresting. So, I'm surprised I've liked some parts. And maybe it is because there are some nicer songs and some quite different stuff, but the overall is britpop, which is a genre I tend to dislike. Not because I think those songs are horrible or something disgusting for the ear, but because they are so plain and boring that I can't find anything to really like in them. And that applies to this album. So, just because I liked some parts, I will consider this a bit better than other albums of the genre. But it is not something I would be willing to listen to ever. It was nice at times, I suppose. But just for one listen. It's not bad, although.

la primera parte se me hizo muy repetitiva y genérica, pero después de la mitad hubieron algunos temas destacables. Pero como un todo es dificil de escuchar

Completely fine, but so exceptionally boring. The whole album sounds like songs that didn’t make it onto an Oasis record. Just too many of these bland UK bands on this list. They aren’t bad, but there are so many unique artists that should have made the list instead.

That’s ok but nothing I need to listen to again.

When to listen: need somewhat angsty background music. This felt a little generic, all of it blended together, an easy listen.

Pleasant surprise. Harkened back to the mid-90s Britpop era. Talented musicality.

I've been trying to pin down why this one didn't grab me more. It's not for lack of trying.. it's like they're still wearing the training wheels of influences. Overall, it feels like they're still shouting from the schoolyard. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - North Country Boy - One to Another - How High

One album from the Charlatans on this list. Doesn't include their biggest hit currently (as measured by Spotify listens). Never heard of them. It is competent Brit pop I guess. Not too much to me. Didn't Oasis and even Blur do this better and before these guys? Their biggest hit is from 1990 so I guess they were contemporaries now lost in the mist of time. If I heard one of the tracks on the radio I would probably just assumed it was early Oasis in my ignorance. Competent without standing out.

This one feels like a lost Brit pop/rock album, and the band look like a cross between the Beatles and Oasis. Definitely sound like it too. I actually quite liked it, especially the first song. I’d call this a 3.5 rounded down.

Late 90s Britpop. Very standard fare.

not as good as i expected tho. i liked the simpsons reference

Okayish

It was just OK for me.

2.8 just a b side oasis

fine. forgettable for sure

Best Track - "How High"

While I didn’t love it, I am surprised I enjoyed this one a decent amount. I see Brit Pop and I just ready myself for disappointment, but it wasn’t a bad album at all. 3.25 / 5

It's alright. I can see why people like. Singer sounds like Noel Gallagher. Mid - I'll give it as most on this list a 3

Not too bad.

At its worst genetic sounding BritPop - at its best the better of the generic BritPop?

Very similar to Oasis. But on some of the song here that’s not a criticism. Some catchy tracks like North Country Boy and One to Another. Will be back for more listens

A descent album, but personally I prefer the bouncier Madchester sound of their debut, Some Friendly. Any song off that one plays, you instantly know it's The Charlatans. This one, while by no means bad, just isn't as instantly catchy and unique.

Already knew from the apostrophe in the title that this wasn’t going to blow me away. It’s discount oasis but I can only be so mad at a band that fills me with that good old new labour naive optimism.

It's good. These guys sound like Oasis; or does Oasis sound like them?

Impossible not to hear the Oasis comparisons, though not familiar enough with The Charlatans catalog to know if that was developed after Oasis hit it big, or if these guys actually influenced them. Either way, a pretty good album.

First listen

Too similar to Oasis

Me hizo acordar un montón a Oasis. Me gustó pero no me voló la cabeza

I guess it's a good example of that kind of motown/northern soul influenced strain of britpop that they do. Kind of sounds like a perkier version of late oasis. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but none of the songs made me feel anything and I didn't feel any differently when it finished

Not exciting but not terrible.

empezo a sonar y ya me sentía en inglaterra en 1997. las vibes immaculate

More generic Britpop. This list has way too many of these albums. Almost all of them are the same. It's ok, I have no problem listening to it, but it doesn't really register.

This felt like the late nineties.

Never really given them much of a listen before, but a central part of the 90s British music scene. A little different than I was expecting from the first track; a bit more grit and edginess. Ah spoke too soon. After this opener, it maybe drops off a bit to more of the Britpop/indie I was expecting. Ahhh and the classic ‘One to Another’ - nice. It’s a pleasant enough album and representation of the madchester time and scene, but nowhere near Oasis standard and don’t think I’ll come back anytime soon. (3.5)

It was fine.

This album is the sorta album I listen to an expect there'll be a hit to make it make sense that it's a one hit wonder album. to my surprise, there wasn't a hit on here. i question why it's on the list. but i did enjoy it!

I remember going to indie clubs back in the day and there were so many dudes trying to look like Tim Burgess. I kind of think that’s part of the reason the Charlatans stood out from the crowd. They had a couple of bangers but generally I have to go with mid

It was nice background noise, but like above average. I'm torn, I'll say a 3/5 but it's very close.

Has some good moments amongst the inoffensive.

Relatively mid which is par for music of this genre and era. Not offensive, not necessarily fun, not really challenging, and not particularly political. It just is. 3/5

Al escuchar los primeros tracks pensé que iba a estar increíble, pero la verdad no. No está mal ni de lejos, pero pintaba para ser un trancazo. En general buenas canciones pero creo que había más potencial que lo que tuvimos aquí.

Me lembrou um pouco Oasis. Foi gostosinho de ouvir, por pouco não me chamou mais atenção, quase chegou no 4, mas vou manter no 3. Gostei do violãozinho deles, algumas vezes parecia Bob Dylan.

Pretty alright 90's British alt rock. Aside from the banger that is One to Another, not too special though. Faves: One to Another, You're a Big Girl Now

Dime store Oasis.

Slightly better than some of the britpop slog I have gone through 3/5

This album falls somewhere between Madchester and Britpop, with some solid guitar work and an oddly affected vocal style from lead singer Tim Burgess evidently heavily influenced by Bob Dylan. The recording was overshadowed by the death of keyboard player Rob Collins in a car crash when he was driving back from the pub with twice the legal limit of alcohol in his bloodstream and not wearing a seat belt. Reading the wiki article about this gives the impression that Collins wasn’t getting on with the rest of the band up to this point, but somehow they pulled together after his death and salvaged this record by patching together things that already been recorded with help from Martin Duffy from Primal Scream to cover the rest. The final track is supposed to be a tribute to Collins featuring a recording of his voice as a child, but it sort of meanders and fades out. The end result is mostly OK - three stars I guess, but not one I’d bother revisiting

Oasisish. I enjoyed this, but I'd rather listen to Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory. 3/5.

Pretty good Brit pop album

cool, but it is kind a type of Oasis, and I'm not a big fan. TODAY'S BIRD: Bobolink

I actually dug this a fair bit but it is so funny that this is on the list. It's just a pretty good BritPop album with a sad story attached to it (bandmate died mid-production). I know this entry is just me kvetching about the list but it is funny to see some of these entries and realize that the writers of the list were just putting their chips down on a handful of their favorite contemporary albums in the hope that they'd be canonized a decade or two later and they could boast that they were first on the scene. That is assuredly what is going on here lol. This is a reliable mix of good BritPop progressions with some more directly psychedelia influenced stuff, reminiscent of Brian Jonestown Massacre or Dandy Warhols. Certainly in conversation with them. Liked this basically immediately, in part because it was so familiar. Favorite Tracks: With No Shoes, One To Another, Get On it, Rob's Theme

low 3.5 Tem algumas músicas boas, especialmente os singles, mas tudo soa um pouco parecido demais e dura mais do que o necessário.

Tough. Does nostalgia win out or objective reality? Nostalgia says 5/5. This is my eta. Objective reality is more like a 3. Some good songs but if I'd never heard this before I wouldn't go racing off to hear more.

Imagine wanting to be Oasis man. Even Oasis don't wannabe Oasis. Its fine.

Blind album and artist. Some cool tracks I guess...?

Great album The start was incredible but it got more disappointing sadly

I listened to this a while ago (and am only writing the review weeks/months later). I remember getting the whole britpop vibe from it. I want to say weak guitars, but a good amount of sporadic moments. Still, didn't stay with me... 3 Stars.

Opens up with an Oasis meets U2 style track. I didn't mind it, despite the excessive use of wah throughout. Bit after that they had some kinda country style song, and tuen another change up. It didnt really all gel together and they sounded too much like they were trying to replicate the sound of the time. Not bad, but not great.

If Blur's Parklife is in the conversation for greatest Britpop album of all time, this one should be too – it's every bit as good. While there's not a track I loved as much as "Girls & Boys" on Tellin' Stories, I found the LP to be more consistent and its slightly shorter runtime makes the prospect of listening to it again a bit more enticing. Like Parklife, I wrestled with giving it three or four stars – at the end of the day, it just didn't quite reach that level for me. Highlights: With No Shoes, One to Another, Area 51, How High, Only Teethin', Get on It

This was an interesting listen. The influences are indeed varied, though probably not as impactful as it is on paper. Britpop, hip-hop soul and rock sounds far fetched, but it eventually sits together as their own sound, I think. Hip hop might still be far fetched. It's a bit mainstream for my tastes, maybe too Americana influences, but there's a lot happening on the instrumental tracks. I must have heard the album 5 or 6 times and EVERY SINGLE TIME I'd take a peek at the tracklist as Area 51 played. Something special, feels a bit better than everything else. 2.9/5

Was oke

2,5 - niet mijn genre

A goood album. Just not for me. Sounds like other albums that came out during this time.

funky and upbeat.

top 3 - With No Shoes, Tellin’ Stories, How Can You Leave Us. It’s alright, might need to give another listen.

Not bad oasis impression

Had a few distracted listens. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Will try and have a more serious listen soon. Obviously there’s an Oasis vibe about the whole thing and I like most of Oasis’ stuff so I’m hoping a few more listens will give me more appreciation.

Damn, that keyboard/guitar riff on "One to Another" is like pure heroine. RIP Rob Collins - bad way to go. This was my introduction to the Charlatans... very Oasis-coded. But I dig it. Strong storytelling, crisp production, excellent musicianship.

2.5 rounded up. Inoffensive but also unremarkable

Feels like a mishmash of 90s rock subgenres, not really my thing

Was ok

Great guitar!

This album transported me back to a simpler time, it was a great album and just made me want to listen to more Alt Rock, after this album I went on a weezer binge

Y'all aren't gonna believe it, but this... Sounds like 90s BritPop Rock.

The first song made me worried this would be some Britpoprock trash. "North Country Boy" is a better song, though, and renewed my hope that this album wouldn't be a miserable listen. It definitely grew on me as I listened, and it helped quite a bit that the songs are all pretty varied, pulling from a few different genres/styles. It's still Britpoprock, but it's not really trash. I don't really have anything particular to say about this one. It's solid. Very British, but not bad. Favorite Song(s): Tellin' Stories

Tellin' Stories is excellent Brit-pop, but I'm just not into the genre. It's not that I don't find the sound appealing, but it is terribly limited. So many of the songs on this album sound so similar to so many of the songs on other albums. That said, this is a very good exemplar of the genre. There are only two or three tracks on this album that stood out in any way, and those are the songs that most prominently relied on acoustic guitar rather than that samey, fuzzy Brit-pop guitar. "You're a Big Girl Now" gave off some cool Faces vibes. "Only Teethin'" seemed to channel a lighter side "Sympathy for the Devil" with some decent Hammond (I'm guessing). The final standout was the pretty "Rob's Theme" instrumental tribute to the band's recently deceased keyboardist. I was paying closer attention to the track list because I was listening to the deluxe edition, and I didn't want to give this record more time than necessary. Nothing offended me, but I didn't find much to be compelling either. Three stars.

Bog standard Brit pop rock, nice but standard stuff. Not sure if groundbreaking back then, but solid

First 4 tracks are strong, it can't be sustained but decent Britpop.

Sure why not

Good bit of britpop

I’m not familiar with this band but I enjoyed their music well enough.

Like it 3/5

Good 90s Brit pop.

I enjoyed bits of this album but not enough, even with the Britpop nostalgia, to really want to listen to it again. A high 3.

Knockoff Oasis.

I was all about this at first because it was 90s rock nostalgia though I didn’t know any of the songs. Then it was kind of the same thing over and over.

Middle of the road for me

A bit to noisy for my tastes, and it felt mostly samey throughout. However, I liked the energy to it and can understand why someone would rate it higher. Favorite Track: Area 51

This was my first listen to any of The Charlatan's work, and it's been sort of centering in my understanding of the 90's Britpop scene hearing an act that seems far more influenced by the Stones and rock's blues roots than their far more overtly Beatles-indebted contemporaries like Oasis and Blur. I overall wasn't impressed with much of the first half of the album, but felt it came more into its own in the latter half, where tracks like "How Can You Leave Us" and "Get On It" grabbed far more of my attention. Overall, a solid showing, but I feel it's another example of an album that does more to highlight the value of its influences than it does make any strong statements of its own, while the contemplative songwriting and lyrics are a credit to the experience. Favorite Tracks: "How Can You Leave Us", "Get On It" Least Favorite Track: "North Country Boy"

This is one of those albums that’s pleasant to have on even if it never really blows me away. The Charlatans sound confident and comfortable here, with a few catchy moments that remind you why they mattered in the Britpop era. At the same time, a lot of the tracks kind of blend together, and nothing hits quite as hard as you keep hoping it will. It’s a solid, easy listen, but more background-music good than life-changing good.

Great grooves. It vibes like crazy. And yet, I listened to it three times through, and it just fades into the background. Perfectly pleasant to listen to, but the songs don't stand out. I feel like they have better songs than the ones on this album. Ok, not necessarily better, but with catchy enough hooks to stand out more. It seems worth listening to it again sometime.

Highlights: One to Another, Only Teethin', Rob's Theme Having heard only their hit The Only One I Know, the last thing I expected was to hear them imitating Oasis. And I don't really like Oasis all that much. Heck, Britpop in general (unless it's Blur). Funny how the vocalist also sometimes sounds like Bob Dylan - especially on Get On It because of the harmonica. The album overall isn't offensive to my ears, but it isn't anything special either. It's a digestible version of Oasis and that's enough since they can at moments be better than the original.

3/5 Solid, nice groovy garage rock-ish type of album, but with higher production quality than your typical garage.

I was never really a fan. I went in feeling optimistic but nothing really stood out for me. Elevator music with lyrics.

Britpop that sounds more influenced by the Stones (and maybe some Dylan) than the Beatles, while integrating some hip-hop influenced grooves and additional neo-psychedelic elements. The band is at its best when the psychedelia is at the forefront to create a full, layered sound. Songs are well written and have good hooks and instrumental components - but there’s something about this that fails to excite me…it’s all just fine or good. Maybe it just doesn’t stand above the rest of the crowd doing similar work. An acceptable listen, but not a vital one.

Sigh... this felt like a slog to get through. Unfortunately, it just sounded like Wonderwall over and over again but in varying fonts. The opening two tracks were my favorites, with the slinky guitar in the back of the second track being the star of the show. I don't think I will remember much about this album tbh.

I Hear Our Day Is Comin' 1001 Albums Generator 210 (1/21/2025) Another piece of completely unimportant and unmemorable britpop that made the list due to its authors' biases. Seriously, I will probably forget I listened to this album in a couple months. With No Shoes and One To Another are both solid tracks, but nothing else really lives up to them. I feel like britpop (for the most part) is more of a "song" genre than an "album" genre, since most of these songs really blend together (and blend together in the greater tapestry of britpop in general as well). While there are some good moments, I find much of the album to be completely unremarkable and mid, so I guess that lands it at a 2.5/5, which I will round up to a 3. Favs: With No Shoes One To Another How High Least Fav: You're A Big Girl Now

Pretty good! Reminds me of Green Day a little bit! Overall I would listen to them again!

A fun, pleasant Brit-pop album. Enjoyed it all, but it never quite punches through to sound like much more than an impression of other, better bands.

Day 161 I quite like the Charlatans and still listen to their best of album ‘melting pot’ often, always found them a fine band who never quite find their identity and instead tried to sound like whichever Manchester band was most popular at the time, sounding like Stone Roses on earlier albums and trying to be Oasis here. Still a decent enough album but nothing special Highlights How High One to Another

I like it and I can tell they took a lot of inspiration from oasis

North country boy ❤️ I pierwszy numer też super a reszta raczej forgettable

Of all the average britpop albums on this list, this has to be the most average. Favorite track: One To Another

Inoffensive, nothing special. But the album doesn’t belong anywhere near this conversation. 2.5?

I liked this ever so slightly more than the other inessential Britpop artists I've received (Shack, Doves, etc.). They're basically Dollar General Oasis with a bit of bagginess thrown into the mix. Decent energy, a few good melodies, and certainly nothing I needed to hear before leaving this world. 3/5

Big standard indie rock, perfectly fine. 2.5 rounded up.

Kinda just a stereotypical 2000's alternative band.

Solid but unspectacular

This was a decent listen. If I were a 12 year old in the UK instead of the US in 1997, I'm sure I would have been real in to this and real nostalgic about it now.

I liked this album! Had a good vibe!

64/100. A solid enough Britpop record, but it kind of gets lost in the crowd. Feels like it’s telling stories you’ve already heard before, just with a slightly different accent.

The last!! What a journey and perhaps fitting it ends on a brit pop album. Now what I'm going to do with myself it's over?

A good britpop record that follows the appropriate formula. I enjoyed it but will forget I listened to it by tomorrow.

Uhhh ja i mean det er bare britpop litt mindre variert enn supergrass albumet men its got the riffs ykyk catchy ofc som alltid vokalisten høres ut som liam gallagher godt tegn det men jes litt kjedelig deler så uh 3/5

Reminded me of a less angry and less drunk Oasis.

Un énième album de britpop mais cela reste sympa à écouter !

3.5. some good tunes

An Actually good britpop album. It had some really nice guitar, and the vocals were genuinely nice to listen to. Leaps and bounds better than anything oasis ever made Very strong 3 almost a 4

I thought this was pretty good when first turning it on but it soon became quite boring, Britpop isn't exactly the most expansive genre and this album just felt incredibly samey. Unsurprising that these have been forgotten over the years.

Honestly, I don’t have a strong opinion on this album. People will probably attack me for this, but it basically feels like 2000s Oasis. Yeah, I know they came first, but that’s the best comparison I’ve got. Solid but not something I would return to. 7.5/10.

fun psych britpop stuff

Easy to bop along to, very quickly forgotten.

One of the better britpop bands, I like the beats and Bob Dylan vibe to a lot of the songs. 3 stars

I once had a roommate with a rear end so large, I had to help her wipe her butt because she couldn't reach around, and wipe it. Her waist was itty bitty too.

Britpop der eher unscheinbareren Sorte.

Ist halt Standard Britpop, macht schon Spaß, aber ist jetzt ehrlicherweise auch nichts besonderes

Fun, some catchy songwriting, but mostly just 'fine.'

I mean…. I did like it, but it does feel more like an album, as opposed to an album I need to hear before I die.

Couple of great tunes, but mostly just a generic indie album to be fair. Underwhelming to say the least.

6/10 Favorites: How High Only Teething

Sounds exactly what I expected from a British rock band in the late 90s. While that doesn't mean its bad it does mean that I feel I could listen to any of 10 other bands and get the same thing.

A bit aosisy but decent

decent

5.5/10

They have an interesting sound and a couple of good covers.

There are many Britpop bands on this list. I think "The Charlatans" are good, but not as interesting and special to be on the list. "Only Teethin'" is a great groovy track that I adore, the rest is nice, but nothing special, at least to me.

Enjoyable pop but uninspiring.

Þetta var nú bara prýðilegt. Ekkert meistaraverk en mjög fínt að hlusta á. Lögin voru svolítið svipuð. Samt verður þetta plata sem ég gleymi mjög fljótt.

Pleasant Britpop with a bit of jangle, then it totally veers off into oddities

These guys sound more like Oasis than Oasis. Did these guys sound like Oasis before Oasis even existed? Possibly, as it seems like this band probably formed before Oasis did. I don't care enough to determine this myself because it all just 3 stars as far as the eye can see. My two favourite songs on here are the ones with no vocals. I think that fact speaks for itself.

Not impressive either way

Telling’ Stories start out good and gets better as it progresses. Side A is good, Side B is better. Liked the beats and baselines, and Brit accent vocals. Area 51 through Rob’s Theme is a ramp up to a strong finish. Never heard of The Charlatans, but I believe we’ll be hearing from them again. (3.2*s) Will check out additional albums from these guys.

I've noted in previous reviews that I am a fan of britpop. Always been a fan of many of the flagship britpop acts but it seems the genre is deeper than I initially thought. Never heard of The Charlatans but it seems like they should have been given more exposure stateside. Tellin' Stories has a lot of the same appeal you would get from Blur, Oasis, etc. but feels like it has a little more friendly of an approach. Very solid album that has a lot of the 90's appeal without some of the pompousness and arrogance that I get from some of the other british acts. It's pretty easy to say its just more of the same britpop charm you expect from other acts buts its got 11 songs, none of which are bad and some of which are pretty good singles. This album deserves a good review but I might have given it a little higher marks had it come up a little earlier. It might have sounded more novel as opposed to derivative of so many other acts that have appeared on the list so far. It's hard to knock The Charlatans or Tellin' Stories for this but unfortunately the entry is a little harmed by the list creator. Decent entry, glad for the exposure though I can see how anyone would be burned out by so much britpop on the list. I might check out some of their other hits to see what else they have though I expect Tellin' Stories was a good example of their offering. 3.07 stars

Pleasant. A couple of catchy tunes. No stand-outs for me.

Sounds like they infuenced Oasis. Maybe its just the UK sound. Having a hard time finding a good setting for the EQ

That's not how you do Oasis. (It seems that The Charlatans predate Oasis, strange.) The Charlatans even look like clones of the Gallagher brothers. I guess they capitalised on the popularity of Oasis and took their sound. At least the songs sound alright, avoiding a low rating. "One to Another" is my favourite song from the album. 3 stars for "Tellin' Stories".

Kirkland Oasis with a side of Walmart Stone Roses

We have Oasis at home:

I didn’t hate this. Didn’t love it. Like a more chill Oasis.

It reminds me a ton of oasis but it seems like these fellas were first? Catchy tho, I like the opener and the guitar instrumentation.

New to me, but I like

it's the 90s.

Pretty solid stuff. Very sad about the keyboardist passing during the making of the album - I liked his tribute track at the end

I read this in the wikipedia article and i started scoffing "Stories is a Britpop, hip hop soul, and rock album that has been compared to the work of Patti Smith and Neil Young." but then i kinda got it ... but I think it set some unrealistic expectations. kool that Martin Duffy from Felt and Primal Scream played on this but uncool that he had to replace a guy that died a pretty horrific sounding death

også ok... er jo ganske glad i britisk rock men denne var mid.

Yeah... obviously it's much better than Mo Salah.

I liked the way they played with styles. From punk riffs to a calm acoustic guitar. Aside from that - the album is a mid pop-rock piece. But in a good way. A solid 3! Lyrics in all of their songs are a bit odd, that's why my favourite track on the album is an instrumentall 'Area 51' - gives me a 'main hero' energy.

Worst album cover ever but not a bad sounding Brit pop record

A brit pop alt rock band of the 90s. Reminiscent of Oasis but without as powerful of hits. Overall- decent but no real standouts

3.5. I never gave the charlatans much time and after hearing this one i realize that was a mistake. Will repeat.

Pretty good, but didn’t blow em way

It was okay. Don’t feel the need to return to this.

I don't remember a single thing from this, it just became background noise for me, and if that had been on purpose then this would have gotten a better score, but I don't think it was. I didn't dislike the music, it just didn't grip my attention either Standouts - 3/5

Such an English/British album, but loved it. Reminded me of my time in London, especially Camden town. Such a fun feel, but left some to be desired.

“Tellin' Stories” by The Charlatans is a very solid Britpop/rock album that, for some reason, I wasn't familiar with (well, “One To Another” sounded familiar...). Each of the songs is well written, distinct from the others, carefully produced, and professionally played. That should be a given for any album on this list, but these qualities already set it apart from a considerable number of the albums that were suggested to me. Therefore, I consider “Tellin' Stories” to be average among the 1001 albums.

It's a pretty standard affair Britpop album, which means it's not bad and has some bangers, but it's also not something you need to listen to.

I really was unsure whether to rate this with 3 or 4 stars. On the one side great songs, simply good rock music. On the other side some really poor songs. Maybe I should have listened more often, then it would have been 4 stars - but at the end (after listening twice) I went for the 3.

chyba 3

They sound like a copy of Oasis, but not bad. 3.5 stas

I feel like most of the baggy/britpop bands that made it to 1997 were stretching their wings and experimenting with other sounds by 1997, but these dudes are still partying like it's 1992. It's not bad, but it's not exactly good either. It feels super dated for 1997. 3 stars.

The only one I knew off this was One To Another which is pretty anthemic and baggy and a lot like the song Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess did with Chemical Brothers on their 1995 album Exit Planet Dust. The other songs on here are a bit bland and disappointing and ridiculously craven to Oasis with lots of cringey, screeching, whining Liam Gallagherisms. If The Charlatans were tellin’ stories round my street and it wasn’t One To Another or Life Is Sweet I’d tell them to shut up.

Reminded me a little too much of Oasis. My favourites were Only Teethin' and Get On It. They were a bit more bluesy.

Decent

Discount Oasis? Very listenable but lacks edge. Great for a dentist office perhaps. 3.2

what if oasis was a full band instead of liam, noel, and the rest of them? the songs don't reach the peaks of oasis but they're good nonetheless

I've never been huge on 90's Brit Pop. Oasis isn't really my thing, I only really know Song 2 by Blur. The Beatles influences come in hard with The Charlatans (Along with Oasis), so it doesn't really feel like a genre that does anything particularly new other than funnel 60's British bands through a 90's alt sound. Not particularly exciting for me. That said, this is a really solid album with pop rock bangers the whole way through. Only Teething is a great Beatles-esque bluesy song. One thing I'll give them is they do have affinity for Bob Dylan, which adds a nice wrinkle to their music. But overall, it's just not a sound that excites me.

Admittedly, a bit of a wall goes up when a ‘Brit-Pop’ album starts playing. I’ve gotten better with being more open to the genre, I swear but there’s still a bit of a grumble that happens anytime a band reminds me of Oasis. I gave this a couple of runs and there’s enough going on musically that kept me interested, it has some fullness to it, some varied sounds as they tapped into what seemed to be several influences, at times they even had a swirly psych sound to them, especially on some of the instrumental tracks. Get On it was my favourite track here. I wouldn’t return to this but it was a decent listen for sure. That all being said, my grumble within needs to get a shot in, the band name is terrible as is the album art. 3 stars

twas fine, 3/5, as im sure a lot of these will be

I had never heard of The Charlatans before and I’m glad I’ve been introduced to them properly now. I really enjoyed this little album. Solid melodies and interesting vocals made it extremely listenable. The album’s vibe is cohesive without suffering from sameness. I’m not sure if I’ll seek it out again, but I’m glad I know it exists if I decide to give it another spin. My actual rating is 3.5 stars.

Most of the album bore no improvement over any Oasis track. The final three songs, however were quite good and I'd love to listen to them again. 3.5/5

It’s not terrible, but sounds a lot like a hundred other British bands from the 90’s. 3/5

I had heard about the Charlatans through the 90s but never actually listened to them, Seems like standard BritPop of that era.

Are we sure the singer isn't Liam Gallagher? There were times I thought perhaps he was. I was excited to listen to this album because I had heard the name "Charlatans" but did not know what any of their music sounded like. I was a bit underwhelmed. It sounded like Oasis doing a less "dirty" version of Brit-pop. Nowhere near bad or anything such as that, but also not necessarily the more revelatory find that I had hoped The Charlatans would be. They fit nicely between Oasis and Pulp in my opinion. The songs didn't just grab me and force me to listen more and more. The sound and songs weren't terribly challenging but they were interesting enough to keep my attention. Time will tell if I come back to them or not. My favorite songs were: North Country Boy One to Another You're a Big Girl Now How Can You Leave Us Only Teethin'

Solid British 90s rock, gives me some U2 vibes but lighter and with a hint more grunge. I enjoyed it but nothing stood out.

Good Britpop album from the 90s in the same vein as Oasis. Nothing in there breaks that mold though.

Brit Pop. Is it the best brit pop? Can't be the best Brit Pop that is Park Life by Blur. It's passable and good, not the best, not the worst.

Knew what this was gonna sound like based on the album art and year and I was on the nose. Perfectly passable britpop with nothing to distinguish it.

Great Brit pop. So good.

#717. A somewhat generic Britpop band thats sounds like they really want to sound like Bob Dylan 3/5: acceptable.

Worse happy Mondays. Still liked it

3.25 hints of greatness, but never quite gets there

Decent.

Strong start with North country boy, started to fall off in the middle of the album

Charlatans: Very throwbacky Brit rock .More fun and contemporary sounding than Oasis. Songs weren’t super memorable -I wish the songs had more stand out hooks.

Not terrible but kinda boring brit pop vibe. None of the songs were memorable. 2.5

I've never heard of them before. Because I have some kind of soft spot for britrock I give them the weak three stars - although there is nothing remarkable with this album. 2,5

Not my taste.

It’s okay. Obviously it’s very similar to Oasis, but without the standout songs. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Standard 90s alt-rock album. Nothing unique that I could hear, almost reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins at times. Not bad, but not overly good. Probably not re-visiting this one.

Listened while running errands with my son. I commented one song sounded a bit like The Rolling Stones (I don't remember which now). Nothing else stood out.

Pretty solid 3.5

I was immediately turned off by the whiny, nasally, Oasis-like vocals, but I got used to them. I listened to this yesterday, and I remember a Bob Dylan sounding song with harmonica and organ, and there were a couple of instruments, but not that memorable otherwise.

Not much to say about this album. Generic Britpop. Not that it's bad but the world would not be much different if this didn't exist.

90’s British pop

This album is number 29 on Pitchfork’s list of top 50 Best Brit Pop albums, which seems to be about the consensus. I think that if I were to try to come up with a list of 1001 albums everyone should hear, I would compile a list of all musical genres as granularly as possible. Then I’d take total global album sales data and divide it amongst those genres. Then I’d calculate what genres had sold the most records and what those percentages would look like if they were divided into just 1001 albums. If a genre didn’t have enough sales to make the 1001 album cut off, then no albums from that genre would make the list. If it did, then it would get the number of albums on the list commensurate with its ratio of sales to 1001 albums. So 90’s boy bands would be four albums and 60’s psychedelica would be eight albums and 90’s grunge would be twelve albums and New Jack Swing would be three albums. Therefore, I would pick the four best 90’s boy band albums and the eight best 60’s psychedelica albums and the twelve best 90’s grunge albums and the three best New Jack Swing albums and put them on the list. What I wouldn’t do is go “I’m from a place where New Jack Swing was quite popular while I was at a formative age and I like it a lot so I’ll put the eighty best New Jack Swing albums on this list no matter how that genre ranks in terms of its importance to everyone else because that genre is important to me personally, and I’m going to make that everyone else’s problem.” Because that would be idiotic. And it would be idiotic to listen to all the albums on a list compiled that way. This album sounds like paint-by-numbers Brit Pop. If you want to listen to 29 albums worth of Brit Pop then you’d probably get to this one. It’s not bad, it’s not particularly good. It’s perfectly fine Brit Pop.

It’s another instance of Britpop that I don’t care for, but at least I don’t hate it. In fact, at some points, the music itself (let’s ignore the uninteresting and probably juvenile lyrics) becomes actually quite catchy. That’s the ‘pop’ bit covered. I put this off for ages, letting the backlog of 1001-generated albums accrue for a few more days before just deciding to grin and bear it. And I’m surprised! It wasn’t all that bad - which you can immediately tell from the opener With No Shoes, which sets the standard as the rest of the songs sound largely the same. The standouts against the aforementioned grain are the most popular One to Another (great guitar), the longest Get on It (becomes almost prog rock-like), and the closer Rob’s Theme (semi-experimental instrumental). Cool. Still, less of the britpop please. I know, we apparently loved it in the 90s. I wasn’t there, but I’m sure I wouldn’t have joined in.

Okay, late 90s retro vibes. Not really charlatans

Decent album but nothing really stood out

At first it sounded like Dollar Store Oasis.. though in the end it is pretty good British pop and has that nostalgic 90s feel where everyone in the UK either had a sleek gelled up Oasis style haircut with a colorful faux leather jacket, or long hair with their choice of an athletic windbreaker, grungy oversized flannel, or long sleeve Adidas shirt with a collar.

Bang average

Mid Pack

Pretty good for Britpop

Sounds like Oasis, but less annoying.

It's fine but I'd rather be listening to almost any of the other Brit pot bands of the era

Muy de su época. Hoy sin transcendencia.

there's nothing strictly wrong with this album besides being a generic and pretty uninspired. it's aight.

This album deserves a second listen.

The lead singer's voice is like a bad impression of late-60s Jagger, particularly his exaggerated pronunciation of long "ee" sounds, and saying "eeyue" instead of "you". It's distracting, and I'm surprised more reviews aren't pointing it out. Additionally, I'm not impressed with the lyricism – though it still outshines the likes of Oasis and Weezer. And the sluggish How High joins the musically empty outro Rob's Theme in the group of "obvious throwaway tracks". Removing them would've made this a perfect-40-minute record, too! (Shameful.) But the guitar and bass are excellent, beginning their rampage from the very first track. The riff in North Country Boy is the guitar highlight but there are plenty of moments to pick from. One reviewer called the music "generic garbage", and I have to wonder if they forgot to put on their ears during the space-rocky opening of One To Another, or the *very* frequent use of a sort of acoustic lo-fi piano tone (pretty rare for anything 90s onward or for anything in the alt-rock genre). Not as generic as a vague background listen might suggest. There are some cool sounds and instances of genre-blending that you won't find in most other 90s music. I think a more accurate assessment was done by a different reviewer: "In an alternate universe most of these tracks would replace the same timeless status as Oasis' big hits. This is a better band with better songwriting... the single "One To Another" was immediately recognisable, deservedly so." Preach. 3/5 Key tracks: North Country Boy, One To Another, How Can You Leave Us

Pretty typical 90s Brit Pop.

The sound of this was generally fine but its a bit landfill Britpoppy I'd say, has the general vibe without any standout tracks. It's a bit Mancunian but thought Tim Burgess leaned into Bob Dylan more than anything, so if you wanted a Britpop bob this might land. A quick Google suggests I do not know any of the big Charlatans songs, or that they aren't memorable enough to be recognised by name alone, pretty telling. 2.5.

Yep, that's Brit pop alright. I kinda thought I would recognise this more than I did. Think I only vaguely knew 1 track. It was ok, but think it was probably done better by others at the time. 3

Pretty good. Not my favorite.

Un peu comme si les frères Gallagher d'Oasis s'étaient dédoublés, mais en un peu plus pop

Better than Coldplay

Ça sonne tellement comme du vieux Oasis. J’aime vraiment Area 51, peut-être parce qu’il n’y a aucune voix ! Je trouve le côté instrumentale des chansons vraiment bien par contre. 5/10
