1.5 Look, this list has done a successful job of opening my mind towards country music, but Jesus this was terrible. I don’t claim to know a ton about The Byrds, but supposedly their sound changed almost entirely with this album due to Gram Parsons’ involvement, so all I can say is F that guy for it. The story surrounding his death and cremation is awesome, but between this and that Flying Burrito Brothers album, that’s all he has going for him. The first song, You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere is decent and gave me Bob Dylan vibes despite the twang, but by the second track, I was ready for this thing to end. And as it just so happens, the opening track is, in fact, a Bob Dylan cover, so once again, F these guys for dragging Dylan’s name into this. Everything else on this album sucks and/or is incredibly boring, with The Christian Life in particular being a song that made me want to bash my head against a wall. Supposedly these guys were booed out of Nashville for being a bunch of hippies posing as country stars, and for perhaps the first time in my life, I gotta say I’m with the conservatives on this one - leave the country music to country artists. I know I’m in the minority here because this is a highly regarded album, but the closest comparison I can draw to this is when Weezer brought in Lil Wayne to help spice up Ratitude - and we all know how that ended up. If you’re a big fan of classical country music, there’s probably some enjoyment to be had in this album for you, but as someone who wouldn’t consider the genre a personal favorite of theirs, I’d much rather listen to quite literally any other country album we’ve had on this list so far. Gonna need Patron, gonna need a beat, gonna need a lot of pretty girls around me in order to forget this one. (I can’t stop, partying, partying)

I recommend this album if you have trouble sleeping. The monotonous music and singing make you fall asleep after 5 minutes.

Too much religion

Plunka plunk music. It must be ...Tuesday. I gave up after three songs. 1 star. Might have gotten more on a different day, but it was not to be.

How this album can be categorized as rock music is beyond me. This is straight up, old school, twangy as hell, whiny ass country music. It's awful. We need a zero stars.

Did not like this at all. Not much of a country fan to begin with, and neither liked the singing nor the instrumentation. Everything sounded the same.

First 4 chords of track 1 and my instant thought was... I'm gonna hate this!! The Byrds have created loads of great music, but this country album isnt one of them, this creation is little more than dreadful. Nothing else to say except, I hate this album with a passion. I hate country music with a passion.

There are so many things I'd rather be doing than listening to the Byrds' country album, including but not limited to committing arson and getting a prostate exam. Dogwater. I can't think of a more boring and vanilla band than The Byrds. They might be influential in pioneering the folk rock genre or whatever, but they're the ultimate "product of its time" band that has zero appeal to modern ears. They just didn't stick in the same way that The Beatles, The Beach Boys or even The Kinks did. Have you ever met a hardcore Byrds fan younger than 50? I don't get why these guys have 5 albums on this list - "Mr. Tambourine Man" is understandable at least, but anything else is mega overkill.

This is not my kind of music. "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" is.... okay, and I could tolerate it playing in a bar or restaurant I'm at, but this is not what I like. I cannot tolerate any of the other songs.

Notes - Country rock album by the Byrds - They decided to do a big genre shift after seeing their popularity decline - Originally they got pushback but the album has gone on to be a big part of “outlaw country” and country rock in general - A mix of covers, traditional country songs, and originals - Seen as significant for just how big of a risk it was - But to me….. hugely disappointing after how much I liked younger than yesterday - Bit of a Snooze fest Fav - Dunno the songs all sound the same to me - You aint goin nowhere - I guess Least fav - Life in prison 1/5 - OOF what a disappointment

Nope. Look, as someone who's vehemently against all organized religion, some of the songs here made me nauseous and angry at the dopey "aw shucks, I'm just a good ol' Christian, putting up with all these sinners" shtick. I also despise almost all country music, so, yeah, put it in the trash and set it on fire.

Second album from The Byrds in three days, but they are so wildly different from each other, it might have been centuries between those two. "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" takes turn, as you might have guessed by the title, into the uncharted territory of country music. It's also very helpful that yesterday's album was by George Jones, one of the staples in country music history. This gives me some room for comparison between those two albums. The Byrds leaned heavily into country style, leaving no room for soft, or psychedelic rock they were exemplifying before. Also, contrary to Jones music, they started playing a sort of group/band country, with plenty of instruments, with lyrics being just somewhere in the background. As a result, this album is not as good as previous one, and the change made the band 'just another one out there'.

Could have done without this one. Mediocre country.

I like country music. I likes teh whole hippie rodeo vibe of the album cover. Then the lyrics... The lyrics, people... They are scary AF. Maybe it's bc english is not my main language but no thank you. 1 star for you!

I did not like this at all. It felt contrived and rude and judgmental. I didn't mind the country/folksy music but I expected more from the Byrds

Siento que llevo muchas reseñitas haciéndoles referencia y resulta que cuando tocan por primera vez (porque si ESTE está, quiere decir que hay al menos 4 discos de ellos) es con un disco que, aunque críticamente aclamado, ni siquiera puedo decir que es de la banda correcta. Era la historia de The Byrds... una banda que década tras década fue cambiando de estilos y miembros, pasando por folk, psicodélico y demás, casi creando estos estilos y siendo de las cosas más influyentes en la música en general. Luego imaginemos que llega un nuevo miembro, que más que miembro parece un estafador con un plan. Este miembro que llamaremos Gram Parsons (porque así se llamaba) en realidad no quiere ser parte de la banda, en realidad el quiere tocar un estilo propio de música que le llama Cósmica Americana, le llama como quiere pero en realidad es country, es un vil músico de country. Entonces llega el líder de la banda, Roger, quien es el único miembro que prevalecerá durante todas las encarnaciones de la banda y les platica a sus compañeros que tiene la idea de hacer el siguiente disco como un homenaje-estudio de todos los estilos de música americanos, haciendo un disco que traiga blues, jazz, country, r&b, etcetera como un catalogo histórico (lo cual a su servidor le suena como un disco que sería pocamadre). Pues entonces empiezan y poco a poco, como un hongo, con alguna clase de pacto impío con una entidad ciclopea-abisal (porque no veo otra posible razón) Gram se va adueñando de todo, y va cambiando el sentido del disco y va convenciendo a todos de que maravilla es su idea y BAM! ahora están haciendo un disco de country, con básicamente el disco entero cantado por él con canciones suyas. Este no es un disco de The Byrds, es un disco de Gram Parsons con The Byrds como sus músicos. La cosa más maravillosa de todo... el disco es odiado por sus seguidores hippies de contracultura, el disco es odiado por los verdaderos fans de country porque que están haciendo estos hippies metiéndose al country... Gram Parsons de todas formas decide mandarlos a la goma y abandona la banda que acaba de dejar maltrecha (creo que su tiempo como miembro fueron 5 o 6 meses en total). Con el tiempo el disco fue mejor recibido y hoy se considera muy influyente en el rock country (de hecho creo es el primer disco catalogado como tal). Personalmente, el disco no hace nada por mí, he escuchado country que me gusta más (que de entrada es difícil que me agrade mucho el género con sus notadas excepciones) y en realidad parece que es alguien tratando de imitar lo que se supone es el country. No dudo que haya gente a quien le encante el disco, es competente, pero para mí nomás no me prende ni tantito y casi me molesta la idea de que sea un disco de The Byrds, que no le viene al caso, y mucho más me molesta la idea de pensar ese disco que pudo haber sido y se perdió en el olvido. Iba a subir mi 1.5 a la 2a estrella... pero meh... ya habrá tiempo para alabar a The Byrds.
