Reviews (page 4 of 7)

This was a beautiful album. Lorelei is the highlight, but there were no real lowlights - save maybe for the dreaminess blurring into itself after a while, but that's not the worst thing really.

Holy moly, wow. This is incredible. A side is literally perfect. I've started the B-sides and they're proving to be as magical as the A Side. This album is something very special. The last two tracks slightly lose momentum from the rest of the album. But on their own, they are still brilliant songs. This is the first album I am giving 5 stars to which I have only heard once all the way through. Usually I need a good few listens or some familiarity of the album beforehand to award the prestigious 5 stars. I'd heard Lorelai before but knew nothing of the rest of the album. Overall. This album? It lives up to it's title... this is music to treasure.

Didn’t understand a word of what I just listened to, but it was ethereal, dreamy, almost hymn like in parts. Like being in church, but better. More please.

Very relaxing, atmospheric, couldn't highlight any song that stands, out, would listen to again

Great, however it's no "Heaven or Las Vegas". Lorelei is a banger though.

Beautiful. At their most muscular.

Another good 80s vibe

Much better than i was expecting. Solid

Very pretty.

There's nothing quite like the CT and this, the 3rd album is pretty typical. They'd lost the punkyness of the first 2 and did the ethereal thing. Beautiful stuff.

I liked this much more that I though. It is dream-poppy and spacey at times. I would not mind revisiting this at some point.

Beautiful

This album surprised me on how much I enjoyed it, lack of big tunes but a great vibe all the way through

really spacey and airy but doesn't have any standout hits like the other one

My first experience listening to Cocteau Twins was in the past year or so. I can't remember if I sought them out intentionally, or if one of their songs came up randomly for me on Spotify, but I've listened to all of 'Heaven or Las Vegas,' and I really love it. I enjoyed this album too, albeit a little less than 'Heaven or Las Vegas.' I'm a huge fan of dream pop, so this was right up my alley. I love the icy, ethereal feel of the instrumentation, and that they achieve this not just with keyboards, but with percussive sounds too. I also love that Elizabeth Fraser's voice acts as an instrument on these songs as well. The band really created a beautiful piece of music from start to finish on this album, and I really want to listen to even more of their work. I hesitate to give this album five stars, and it's only because I feel like 'Heaven or Las Vegas' is a showcase of what they can really do, and that the band was still crafting some of their sound on 'Treasure.' I know that sounds kind of shitty of me, but it's just the way I feel. This is still a wonderful album, but it's just not a five star one to me.

Very decent worth having another go

An ethereal wonderland of songs - making you question meaning whilst making you feel as though you're heading out on a mystical adventure. Brilliant layering of instruments and special effects. I shall be listening to more of their back catalogue.

It’s pretty good indie. I don’t have much to say, but I like the dreaminess of it.

Well, that was different... I kinda like it though...

Un disco dificil de definir. Pero al fin y al cabo es un treabajo introspectivo, algo así como dream pop. Muy buen disco, pero demsaido falopa para mal 7/10

A jangly nightmarish fever dream from start to finish.

Dreamlike and airy indie rock, quite pleasant

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Ivo, Lorelei, Persephone, Pandora, Donimo

strong 7 - light 8 can get a bit droning

A little bit dream, a little bit shoegazy, dense opressive guitars, wonderfully lush vocals. There's so much to love about this album and what a fascinating and important stop on the road to Shoegaze and subsequently Post-Rock. That being said it falls down a very specific and unfortunate set of cracks when it comes to being a "good" album. The drum machine sounds are criminal in the way that they could only get away with without irony in the 80's. Bizarrely in a lot of places the drums totally work and sync up with the dreamy vibe of the rest of it but more often than not it just clashes horribly. What would have worked is using all the distortion and reverb they could get their grubby little hands on to make those digital drums sound even more bleak and industrial. Similarly I think that some of the vocals could have been mixed a bit better, that's saying nothing against the performance which is great but unlike contemporaries mbv the vocals stand out against the rest of the textures, music this dreamy should have the vocals swimming in a soup of guitar and effects. Both of those issues were likely just because this is such an early example of this kind of dream pop that they were still working out how to do it. But I can also see why the band think its unfinished, sometimes the songwriting doesn't seem to go anywhere and some vocal drum or guitar parts feel like they could have done with a rewrite to make them a bit more interesting. That being said I'm judging this overly harshly because its really great and fantastic fun to dissect. I find this very evocative because you could trace so many of my favourite sounds and tropes in music to this exact time. I'll definitely come back to this one.

Ethereal shoegaze/dreampop is my jam, and these folks basically invented the genre. That said, I haven't actually listened to them that much - they were a bit before my time, I guess? I listened to this through twice and found a couple of the tracks to be standouts - especially Lorelei. The sounds are layered and crunchy and yet always light and dreamy too. Really enjoyed, would definitely listen again.

Genres: Ethereal wave, dream pop Formed: Grangemouth, Scotland in 1981 Run time: 10 songs, 41 min, 35 sec The third studio album by the band. I had always assumed they were an Irish band, but apparently they are Scottish. As I’ve never listened that carefully, I had also assumed that they were singing in Galic but it is in fact English. The least popular song on the album is track 8, “Cicely” with almost 1.3M plays, whilst the most popular is track 2, “Lorelei” with over 20M plays on Spotify. Overall the album has a beautiful, calm and ethereal feel to it. If you’re analysing the lyrics, then you will be missing out on the feel of the thing. The songs all seem quite profound in dealing with various aspects of life, love, loss and so on. Listen Again?: Yes My Rating: ****

I'm not really sure what to say about this album. After listening to the first few songs on the album I was extremely confused on how this was considered music. But then about halfway through Persephone, it clicked. As soon as Pandora started playing I began to appreciate the music. Then after a quick look at the Wikipedia article, and seeing that this actually defined the dream pop genre, I think it really warmed me up to the album. Despite not understanding a single word other than "Here's what it takes", this really is an insanely great piece of music. I was initially going to give it 3/5 but after letting the music breathe for a bit, I'm giving it a 4/5. Favorite Tracks: Pandora (For Cindy), Donimo

First time listening to Treasure but was actually listening to Heaven or Las Vegas earlier in the week (my own choice not through this project) This is a beautiful album one you can really get lost in. Maybe being harsh but heaven or Las Vegas does feel the more Complete album, which is stopping me giving treasure the full 5 stars. But more than deserves it’s place on the list and will be added to my regular rotation, just falls slightly short of the perfect album status.

I loved Heaven or Las Vegas when this generator assigned it to me, so I was pretty excited for this album. It's crazy to me that they had this sound in 1984. I'm so used to shoegaze being an early 90's thing. Not every song is something catches my attention, and it's not as good as Heaven or Las Vegas, but it's still solid. The singer's voice really fits for this type of music. I wonder if I'd like other albums from this band. My favourite songs were Lorelie and Pandora (For Cindy).

Really liked this, and was surprised I've never heard it. Must have been a bit mind-blowing in 1984. This seems way ahead of it's time. 4/5

That was quite lovely. I don’t know if I’d be ready for it in the mid-80’s, but I liked the pretty sounds today. B

An acquired taste, but I've acquired it, so that's fine. Not as accessible as Heaven or Las Vegas, but still really very good.

Great, jangly, atmospheric, almost shoegazey Scottish Baroque goth. If you like it, you'll love it. It's not a melodic album without being relaxing, and perhaps a smidge one dimensional but it's also completely joyful, self-confident and of its moment. It edges a four because I've been giving out too many threes.

Still sounds surprisingly good

Yeah nice weird

"Ninwouuuni chaba chaba tolseeeee" Beautiful.

How was this album made in the early 80s? It feels so ahead of it's time, specially in its production quality. It is such a beautiful, soothing album. The onlyproblem I have with it is that some songs drag out for too long.

Almost timeless in how ethereal it is. A great album just to vibe to.

airy fever dream drones and nonsencial lyrics. kinda reminds me of Candy Claws. feels 1 track too long, but it's a vibe

Un trésor d'album de la part des Kate Bush Twins.

I’d like to give a 3.5. Better than average, but not quite a 4

I liked it. Very unique sound.

3.5/5 dreamy indie pop. decent but sometimes high voice is grating

Draumkennd og flæðandi, skemmtileg plata!

What a great album and sound. I definitely hear resonance with Kate Bush and The Innocence Mission. Even The Cure. I really think this is outstanding and enjoyable. Unique vocals, solid dark guitar and very nice strong basslines.

Pretty good. Dragged at times but neat to see Proto-shoegaze

really liked this album, you can see the direction the group is moving in and how they were pioneers of dreampop. this has some flaws, it’s no heaven or las vegas, which is why it’s a 4, but it’s a very high 4

I really liked this album! Ethereal, otherworldly, perfect for a certain kind of mood.

Okay looks cool… The album opens off with the song Ivo an interesting plunge into the soundscape of the album with dreamy guitars and odd lyrics cool song. Then there is Lorelei another song in a very similar vein to Ivo but with some cool bell sounds. Honestly if you’re looking for like a less heavy and distorted version of my bloody valentines loveless ( so basically a non showgaze version of that) this would be what I think it would turn out like. Beatrix takes the listener through a more haunted soundscape basically being a creepy chant backed up by dream pop sounds. Persephone is a heavier cut going to more of rock sounding existence it’s just the small things like this rattle sound like a snake crawling out of a cave an the fact that the lyrics are more understandable and less loveless’y really makes it a stand out on first listen. Pandora ( for Cindy) ends off side A it’s this haunting swirling track hidden in with the dreamy soundscapes that make this band sound so special. Side 2 opens with Amelia a loud but not a heavy song the soundscapes are very similar to what we’ve herd before but in a perfected way one of my favourites to be fair. Aloysius is another track moulding into similar sounding stuff but the drums are a real highlight on here. Cicely has an awesome base line that really bring this song together the best bit has to be the spiralling pre chorus though a proper trip. The penultimate track otterley is a morbid thing indeed slow and gloomy yet gentle with the rushes of the see. Probably my least favourite but it’s still cool. The album closes with it’s longest song domino which is this sorta song from heaven being slow but grand and an amazing send off. I really liked it and was close to giving it a 5/5 but I think you really have to be in a certain mood with this but if it clicks like it did with me well my god it’s great.

Would like to dig into this group more, new to me but I like what I hear.

Familiar with "Lorela", but I hadn't listened to a full album before. Certainly a very unique sound. The closest thing I can equate it to is Kate Bush. I certainly don't begrudge the use of the drum machines and think they are a big part of the reason why this album sticks out in their catalog.

Cock twins Cock twins

I don’t know if Spotify’s source is faulty or not but the sound quality of this album was worse than I remembered, particularly the drum machines. They do add a mechanical charm. Anyway, it’s Cocteau Twins.

Unique voice and phrasing, nonsense lyyrics, (but who cares). Beautiful and lush.

Loved this - will need to listen again. Lush sounds, but still so much space in the music.

oh yeah

Dream soundscapes and Elisabeth Frazer adding vocals of incredible beauty. It’s all about atmosphere here, and gets slightly boring if the ears are set for rythmic 3 min songs with lyrics telling a story, but as a back drop for a meditative moment it works. And the best from Cocteau Twins

The album where they arguably became the "Cocteau Twins". They hate it. The disjunct between the general etheralness of the music and the solid crunch of the drum machine (did they feed that through gated reverb? It has the same sort of machine gun sound as The Church's "Seance" album) is fascinating.

Other than their non-album single I'd never listened to the Cocteau Twins. Very pleasant listening, albeit with a slightly intrusive drum machine. Dreamy and ethereal, and I will be digging this one out again.

This was really good! I never really got into Cocteau Twins but had a great time with this one, the production is just immaculate and the melodies are so folkish and dreamy Will definitely be going back and checking out more of their albums

interesting

This album starts out very strongly. The first four songs are absolutely magical. They sound like a mystical, ethereal siouxsie and the banshees. the second half of the album leans too much on atmospherics forgoing the gorgeous melodies of the first half. Still a really beautiful and accomplished album 4 🌟

It's super weird and unique. I like this album a lot and I'm excited to dive into their other records.

This is great!

I like this a lot. I had heard of the Cocteau Twins and had a vague idea in my head of their sound being alternative with an ethereal twist, but was expecting more alternative and less ethereal. It was actually the other way around though. Very nice. 4 stars.

Beautiful, etheral and way ahead of its time. Absolutely terrific dream pop.

Glorious

4.0 - Lush dreamscapes that are dark and jagged, like waking up in a fever and looking out your window onto an icy winter night.

ethereal

Treasure is a great dream pop album by the people that personally invented the genre. To be honest often too sweet and slow for me (I prefer shoegaze), but you must give credits to the legends. Compositions and arrangements are impressive.

Easy 4 for me. Has all the stuff I like from the mid 80s - layered synths and ethereal vocals. Ultimately, I think The Glove's Blue Sunshine from the year before (1983) hits some of this stuff better. Also, I wish the album had ended with Cicely.

This is a pretty cool album. Not really my thing but they have a very unique style and I didn't hate it so there must be something to it, right? Hard to judge this kind of thing. Probably one of those albums that I wouldn't mind having on in the background while doing other things.

This album is a medival-rock-sphere pop mix. The tracks are less pop-songs and more rock. In the fact its amzing how these hamonic experiments are grafted onto rock structures. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Lorelei, Persephone

Very mystical sounding. Great vocals, even though I couldn't understand a word of what they were saying. Song structure is simple, but works very well in practice.

Beautiful. One of their greatest albums, starting with the utterly gorgeous "Ivo".

Pop de qualidade com vocal feminino envolvente

Weird, but good!

distinctive sound, likeable

Melodic with wonderful female vocals.

all of the sounds on this really work for me, i love the heavy guitar effects and the layered sounds. the vocals are really beautiful, definitely growing on me as i listen. i think some of the songs in the middle could really use a stronger beat to break up the floatiness, but maybe that's just my taste. i think it'd really reward a second listen.

"We're covered by the sacred fire When you come to me You come to me broke" (Lorelei) No sé si señalaría ninguna canción por separado como mi favorita, pero todo el disco tiene un aura de brujería muy guay.

One of most original goth records from an underrated band

Haha I love the Cocteau Twins! This album is good but not as good as Heaven or Las Vegas.

Hell yes

A pretty decent album, I can see why it was so important to the scene.

Tell you what's the fuckin bomb boys. This album. Wacky 3am listen for me but mamma mia. Why isn't it a 5 star album then I hear you say? Well, I was freaked out by it too.

not as good as holv but still great. more gothy, production is harsh

surreal vocals... superb distorted guitars... nice

Dream pop - subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia

Not necessarily my vibe but a vibe nonetheless

Unfortunately find this a little underwhelming despite its acclaim. There are elements that really appeal to me but it’s too dreamy and ethereal to capture me fully. RYM: Y (#206) Saved a song: N

364 days ago, I started this project with another Cocteau Twins album and gave it a 3. That seems to be the standard for them. This is the second time I've listened all the way through a Cocteau Twins album and, with luck, will be the last.

idk mid

The Cocteau Twins to Crystal Castles set of dominoes is just two dominoes, but I sure do like those dominoes.

A classic 3. Nothing that makes me go nuts, but a good listen here and there.

Escuchando

Solid background music, but very, very boring Best Song: Pandora (For Cindy) Rating: 5/10 Stars: 3

Good album. Maybe a 4.

The songs were definitely hit or miss for me, but the grungy shoegaze sound really resonated with me. This is like the audio equivalent of watching Twin Peaks or something.

Bello ma non è heaven or las vegas

Seems like it was decently influential and it was creative in a way but didn't do much for me.

Not bad. At times it reminds me of the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack for SNES, just not as good. There was a point in listening to Pandora (For Cindy) that I convinced myself they were singing in Japanese.

This was a fun listen, and I liked the vibe. 3.5, bumping down.

First time listening to The Cocteau Twins, always been aware of them but never got around to it. Had it on in the car to and from work. I found it a very “delicate “ sounding album that even the car noise smothered it. Gonna revisit it in a darkened sound proof room, I think I’ll love it then.

Went by without really noting it.

Enjoyable, but nothing here would get added to a Playlist. 3/5

Sounds like a David Lynch soundtrack. This is adjacent enough to music that I do dig, but it doesn't really work for me. I like the production. But their flavor of a dream state just does nothing for me. I think it's a 3 simply because I respect what it is trying to do. I'd be reaching for the skip button should it come back on again though.

I really like quite a lot of this, and I definitely admire their artistry. The overall effect is still a bit too breathily ethereal for my taste but it's due a reappraisal at some point. I can imagine this might grow on me.

I liked the lush production and the ethereal vibes. Not really my kind of thing though.

Song-by-sing this album is full of some 4s, some 2s, and a number of 3s. I liked the bright ambient/shoegaze (rather than dreampop) lean compared to Heaven or Las Vegas. 3.3/5 -> 3/5

I like it. A little too dark/gothic for me at times tho. I think I’m more into Heaven and Las Vegas.

Musically I liked it, vocally I just found it was too chanty or whatever you want to call it. Got old after awhile.

I really wanted to like this but I honestly got a little irritated by it and wanted it to be over. Disappointed cause I like some of the Cocteau songs

Classic dream pop. Cocteau twins are legit. The founders of the sound if you ask me. Though they do have better records than this one.

this was good but not great. kinda felt like one long song… nothing that sparked my interest in particular BUT i will listen to more cocteau twins, i enjoy this dream pop etherealism.

Definitely a vibe, kinda interesting, but ultimately not my jam.

With my recent Dandy Warhols review ringing in my ears (eyes?), I ran through the first few numbers with trepidation. But as it unfolded, it was clear this wasn't the same reverb-fest. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find a Kate Bush-inspired, whimsy-filled, etherial, almost alien landscape. The lead vocalist (who I've learned is Elizabeth Fraser) has an incredible range, and her voice is 10% human vocal chords, 90% synth from the stars. Not for repeat listening, but an auditory experience nonetheless. 3 stars.

Moments of greatness. Haunting, unique, fascinating. Elizabeth Fraser's voice demands attention. Felt like walking around on a foggy afternoon just before the sun goes down. Has a Siouxsie or Cure vibe, but less restrained by the verse/chorus/bridge musical form. Like a proto-Portisehead.

Just okay

Such a resurgence of fans in 2020s

Nothing special but i didn't think i would like it. Did not feel anything though so no 4th star.

80’s Shoegaze ⭐️Persephone

Bien! mono! no creo que sea mucho mi estilo pero me pareció coherente y lindo de escuchar de fondo también.

I really loved Heaven Or Las Vegas, so the first few tracks of this had me worried because they definitely weren’t hitting. Maybe I was in the wrong headspace though because by the time I hit Pandora I thought it was all pretty good-great. Might need a second listen.

Nice background music.

Lorelei

I liked this. Especially the second half. Didn’t over stay it’s welcome. Witchy and gothic, very interesting

I liked this. Lorelai I added to library really good, if I liked another song as much it would’ve been 4 stars

I really want to like this more, but I’m struggling to enjoy something where I can’t comprehend any of the lyrics. It’s too much of a distraction - I find myself trying to understand what’s being sung instead of just enjoying the sound of it all.

In 1984 this music would've been a long way from my 14 year old Queen fan radar and the acoustic guitar was not the instrument of the era. However, listening with more mature (and open) ears I am appreciating the reverb laden textures and the variety of approaches to songs within the album. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is one of the distinctive female voices of that era looking back. It will need another listen to fully convince me but I could well explore in more detail after this.

***An ok album

Eigentlich genau mein Stil, elektronisch, bisschen Indierock, aber hat mich nicht umgehauen.

Lahm mit ein paar Highlights

Everything kind of blended together. It was not *bad* but nothing stood out and I see no reason to return

It’s weird but it worked.

See my review for *Heaven or Las Vegas* (7.2) ★★★½

Interesting vibe, but don't like the vocals. 3 stars

I always want to like this album more than I do, in part because "Lorelei" is awesome and pretty easily my favorite Cocteau Twins song. However, I think the second half isn't really that strong except for the closer, "Donimo". The first half definitely has some bangers though -- "Ivo", "Persephone", and the aforementioned "Lorelei" are quite awesome. In the end, I'm settling at a strong 3.5.

I find this irritating

Despite not really liking their other album on the list that is much more well known I enjoyed this one, much to my suprise. Not by a bunch but still I'm geving it a positive rating. 6/10

Super atmospheric and ethereal

better than i anticipated

Sphärische Musik

A pleasant enough listen in the background but not really my thing.

It was nice and dreamy. I'm writing this the day after listening and I can barely recall anything to be honest, but I remember enjoying it at the time.

This is such a lovely album, especially on a rainy day like today. While listening it put me through a real storm of emotions all at once — I felt sad, happy, energetic, heavy, calm, and a little crazy, sometimes all in the same song. And it’s not the lyrics doing that (there basically aren’t any clear ones), it’s all Elizabeth Fraser’s voice. That incredible “mouth music” she does just pulls you in and takes you wherever it wants. The whole record has this dreamy, shimmering wall of sound — twinkling guitars, soft drums, and her vocals floating on top like some otherworldly instrument. It’s not a concept album with a story or anything, but I really liked the idea behind it: they intentionally made everything vague and unclear on purpose. No obvious meanings, just pure atmosphere and feeling. The song titles sound mythical but they don’t actually point to anything specific, and that somehow makes it even more immersive. It’s beautiful, emotional, and strangely comforting even when it gets intense. I really enjoyed sinking into it. Perfect rainy-day music that wraps around you and doesn’t let go.

so calm, love it, but not the best cocteau album to me

This wasn't bad, but it's certainly no "Heaven or Las Vegas".

Moments of greatness ultimately drowned out by way too much fucking reverb. 3/5

80's dream pop album that's worth a listen, if only for some nostalgia. One of the Cocteau Twins better albums too.

Wow. TWO Cocteau Twins records on this list?! Whispy voice. Music is cool. Good not great indie.

Okay, did not listen to full album but first few. Decent

= the Beatles

Bit out there style wise, cool discovery.

My first time listening to Cocteau Twins. Interesting album with a lot of ethereal vocals and interesting instrumentation. It’s really a 3.5, but in this rating system I have to give it a 3.

Started of ok, good music, but strange language bored me after a bit.

A good album, I liked Pandora and Aloysius the most.

Wonderful and original sound. I really enjoyed the tempo and lyrics. Will be listening again!

I've heard Cocteau Twins mentioned like 50 times this year and I don't recall spending too much time listening to them (they did appear on this list previously one time), so I'm excited to see this pop up. I can definitely see why people liked this in it's day, and why it's had a resurgence lately. It hits on a lot of things that I'm finding to be pretty prevalent in today's new / modern music- specifically with the younger crowd. It's moody, full of vibe, has production elements that surprise you, it's at times intimate and other times cinematic, it features an ethereal female vocalist, and the songs hit a wide range of emotions. A nice sound! 3.4/5 for me.

Big fan of the Cocteau Twins but this always has been a little too difficult to hear a single word they are saying for me

eh... isto kao i njihov kasniji album koji sam odslušao prije ovoga. čista trojka, nije loše, al nije ni posebno dobro. ne paše mi baš

Didn’t like this as much as heaven or Vegas but still pretty solid. Very ambient and almost operatic at times which I love.

Top shelf bleed out music. Does this album have lyrics?

Treasure is the weird kid at the party.. interesting, but you're not quite sure how to interact with them. Fraser's vocals are enchanting, but they're often obscured by the instrumentals. It's like trying to have a conversation in a crowded room. After two spins, I'm left feeling like I didn't quite get to know them. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Lorelei - Persephone - Pandora (For Cindy)

Lorelei is a beautiful song. Worth it for that alone.

I really liked Lorelei - its right up my alley moody/ etheral 80's gothy vibes. Unfortunately rest of album goes a bit too far down the etheral road and forgets that songs need tunes.

This might be even weirder than the other album of theirs I got on this list. But it's also weirdly compelling and compared to some other stuff I've had to endure, I didn’t mind it

Cocteau Twins - Tressure ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I quite liked the instrumental elements on this record but I really wasn’t a fan of the lyrics and vocals here, I’d probably rate this 3.5/5, I had a listen to some of their hits and preferred them to this album, I think this album was a little bit too artsy for me.

no standouts like their big singles, but overall a cool dreamy vibe. good listen.

Hauntingly beautiful in a way. Really enjoy how everything flows together. Misses hits, but strong lp.

Pretty unique sound and unlike anything I've heard before. A rather enjoyable, peaceful album without any actual lyrics. This genre of music is something I'd imagine being played while I'm waiting at the pearly gates. 2.5/5.

I found this very boring. Didn't hate it but just meh.

Favorite track: lorelei other picks: ivo, persephone, pandora

Nice 80's warbling. I used to listen to these to go to sleep at night.

I didn’t love this as much as I wanted to but it was still solid. Was really no one else doing dream pop around this time??

Two listens in and I'm having trouble putting a number on this! On one hand, they set an atmosphere unlike anything I've ever heard before, perfectly matching the snowy nighttime walk I took with it. A memorable album experience for sure, but at the same time -- perhaps also due to the novelty of it -- there's nothing about the music that really clicked, other than ‘vibes’. The vocals especially were hit or miss, though that's surely something I can warm up to. I'll set a 3 for now, but it's a sound I definitely want to explore more! I look forward to Heaven or Las Vegas! Standouts: Lorelei • Persephone • Pandora (for Cindy) • Aloysius • Donimo

Samey samey

Would've preferred to hear Heaven or Las Vegas

My second Cocteau Twins album! This was reminiscent of Heaven or Las Vegas, but maybe a little less polished. Still, find myself enjoying it

ethereal and dreamlike. every song feels like it floats.

I really never got this band. There are some songs that I like & they so happens to be on this album. The blending of the vocals & music is amazing. Well produced.

fineeee. just fine. I was expecting more ngl but it is very pretty and melodic, sounds nice, but not for me entirely

This is not what I expected the Cocteau Twins to sound like. It was more like Siouxsie and the Banshees if they did more keyboard word and had Enya sing lead on their songs. The lyrics are fairly much nonsense and so Treasure coasts on vibes. There are enough vibes here for me to waste a few hours a day listening but nothing that I think would want to make me come back. This was fine but I am not sure any of the songs are going to stick in my head for a long period of time. One man's "dreamy" is another man's "dreary," but not in the way The Cure are dreary.

Not really into 80s goth, so for me it's just alright.

Dreamgaze!

The generator has previously introduced me to the twins and id really enjoyed it so was delighted when this came up. I enjoyed thisbine again, but probably a little less. This has the same dreamy qualities that made it float along nicely, but it just seemed more raw and in need of development. Good but not great.

Day 162 Enjoyed it at first but became a bit samey after a while. Highlights Ivo

Interesting pop music

How can an ethereal album like "Treasure" be so boring at the same time? It's similar to other albums from the mid-80s. "Persephone" is my favourite from "Treasure". That track must be the "Treasure" in a sea of rocks and garbage. I think that also describes the album perfectly. 3 stars for "Treasure".

Interesting but not really but vibe - HOWEVER - listening to the album through and not changing the Spotify “station” immediately allowed me to find some incredible music. Specifically The Radio Dept., Tamaryn, and and You’ll Never Get to Heaven - idk if I’m an uncultured swine for this “new” discovery (I’m sure this is the answer!) but I’m glad I listened to this album because it found me some of my favorite new discover music in quite some time.

I like the vibe of this album. The first 4 tracks had the reverb turned up to 11 and it really distracted from the music. Fraser also really pushed outside of her vocal range on those and it brought those tracks to a screeching halt for me. The back half was much more cohesive and enjoyable. It felt as if they found a groove to sit in and pulled every conceivable good idea out for the remaining tracks.

3.5. I actually think it's a very interesting album and all the titles being girl names (some of them with further meaning even for us) is pretty cool. But overall a bit too yell-y pitch for me? However I'd respect anyone that's a fan, cool band.

An atmospheric and unique album with a good mix of melody and experimentation. Probably too weird for me to really be into it, especially with the nonsense vocals, but well-thought and well-executed.

Treasure. That is what you are. Except this album was background noise for my commute I fear so it’ll get a solid 3. Cocteau twins rock but they always take a few listens to really love it. Also wish I had listened in the car but oh well.

Smooth and ethereal like the other Cocteau Twins album I listened to. They have an interesting sound. The main issue with this and the other album was that tracks bled together and the vocals often turned to nonsense. There are some good tracks here, but its an uneven album.

Yeah, son.

Bit strange. Thought it was alright

ethereal, angelic

Underwhelmed

This had a couple dank moments but otherwise kind of forgettable. I like my shoegaze LOUDER

Treasure was a pretty good album. It certainly has been a while since i last heard anything by the Cocteau Twins but this album still managed to have a lot of what i remember from Heaven Or Las Vegas. It is a dream pop album so it does sound very wistful and dream-like as you would expect but there were a few times when the guitars got really involved and as someone who likes hard rock, those were my favorite points of the album. I still enjoyed some of the dream pop moments too as they had a lot of the stuff i like about that genre but it still isn't my favorite bit of an album where that's it's main focus. I still thought this album was a pretty good listen. Best Song: Persephone Worst Song: Amelia

Pretty cool. It was a bit monotonous--I honestly didn't notice when it looped until about halfway through the second listen. Not sure if I'd seek it out again, but I'm glad I now know of the Cocteau Twins.

I really liked Lorelei - its right up my alley moody/ etheral 80's gothy vibes. Unfortunately rest of album goes a bit too far down the etheral road and forgets that songs need tunes.

Ok overall. Some tracks got a little odd on vocals. Chill and dramatic feeling vibes.

Don’t have a lot to say. This was fine but not that great or interesting.

A good, dreamy Shoegaze album. Nothing to get too excited or annoyed by.

Album No. 0090 on my list. “Treasure” by Cocteau Twins was an interesting listen. Pretty unique actually. I liked the sound of the album. It’s difficult to describe. Dreamy? Space-y? I don’t really know. Very nice kinda background music - it reminded me of some video game soundtracks actually. Maybe because of the (I assume) alternative scales used? The downside of this album functioning really well as background music is that at least to me, it was not all too memorable. I still liked it, but it’s hard to pinpoint concrete songs that I loved in particular. I’ll nevertheless add “Ivo”, “Lorelei”, and “Persephone” to my playlist. 3/5 stars.

Nothing but ordinary

Yet more Cocteau Twins. This one has “something”, but not quite enough of it to get its claws in me…

OK, I thought cocteau twins was a vibe the first time around. It still kinda is, BUT, the concept of a second entry has caught me completely off guard. This is the same, does it deserve a place on this list?! Is it more groundbreaking or different than the other one?! Some might say, is this necessary?

Kind of bums me out. It's not bad per se but I don't really want to listen to it.

Back when I was 18 I had friend who was really into the Cocteau Twins, I'd always listen and feel I was never quite clever enough to fully appreciate it. That hasn't changed

Nice one

I like it, it’s gonna be a 6/10 for me

I can't understand a word they say and have no clue what is going on, but I like it!

Bara mjög fínt

Næs og ágætlega áhugavert.

oh well, I don't get the high ratings.

It's a nice sound for a bit, and then it's not. A bit forgettable, it's certainly no Heaven or Las Vegas. Ah well!

concept fabulous, execution less so

3.5 - weird but cool

super chill, good focus music

I enjoyed it! It's a beautiful record with a unique environment. I don't love how it sounds, from an engineering standpoint it's a little difficult to listen to at times, but musically it's gorgeous.

Interesting. Definitely a 3. Not quite a 4. Girls not fans of it.

This album starts out gorgeously, as strong of an open as you could hope for. Then it goes on a bit, and each song sounds quite a lot like the one before it. 3* for my sober brain, probably a 4* album if the devils lettuce has chimed in

This was ok. But aren’t we going to get Heaven or Las Vegas? So baffled by some of these choices.

I preferred the vibes of portishead to the vibes of this. Not much for me to latch onto here but not exciting either.

Not my favorite of theirs, but so solid. More solid than most on this list

2 birds and a synth go wild

Even the reverb had reverb. 3 stars.

Interesting - but not that enjoyable

Decent ambient stuff but writing this the day after I can’t remember any of it.

Nice. I was not super excited for the dream pop atmosphere that I was expecting, but I got into it more than I thought I would. The heavy use of sampling (or similar tape loops etc.) in some part was cool. I also found more interesting harmonies in all the reverb and loose open sounds than I expected.

Treasure by Cocteau Twins is a beautiful and remarkably original album — especially considering it came out in 1984. That really surprised me. This record is such an intriguing listen. I put it on and ended up playing it three or four times today, hearing something new with each spin and never once getting bored. It’s definitely not the kind of music I’d normally go for, but there’s something captivating about it — the textures, the atmosphere, and Elizabeth Fraser’s vocals all draw you in. That said, there are moments that lose me a bit — like the track “Otterley,” which I just can’t quite get my head around. Still, Treasure is an intense, immersive, and fascinating album that rewards repeated listens. Favourite track: “Ivo” — a brilliant song, Domino is also very lovely and twee. Least favourite track: “Otterley” — I’ve no idea what’s going on there. Album artwork: A lovely and fitting cover for the music within.

I thought for sure I'd be the one in the group rating this highest. It's a vibe I love in one of my favorite genres but it never comes together for me beyond something pleasant to have in the background or something to write to. (I think my problem is that it's firmly in the shoegaze zone for goth bands, not my favorite kind of goth music, and I'm probably being pickier than I should because it's a genre I know and like so well? and maybe I'd rate it higher on a different day too. oh well.)

the music is great but something about the vocals just grates on me. the wailing, incomprehensibility of it means my brain can't land on it. now arguably, music is not always intended to make us feel comfortable and good and safe, which is why this gets 3 stars. I like the music but not the vocals, and the whole package certainly evokes something in me

was fine and chill but I'll forget about it by the end of the day

I don't know what this was, but I liked it. Reminded me of Phantogram.

This is what phantogram would have sounded like in 1984. Decent listen.

I wanted to like this album more than I did.

I liked this more than I thought I would! It's moody and ethereal, not usually a vocal style I prefer, but the whole package is very cohesive and I always find I enjoy listening to a vocalist in a language I don't speak, it really lets the quality of the vocals stand out. It's easy to see how foundational this was and I was surprised by how closely modern shoe-gaze sticks to this early stuff. I personally won't come back to it, but solid stuff! I love the cover, it's gothic but also so '80s, it's a 4/5.

5/5 for 'Lorelei', a bit less for others. On average, good album, but I'm not overwhelmed. The whining singing get tiring after a while.

Fav: Otterley Least Fav: Persephone The unfortunate part of hearing their best album (Heaven Or Las Vegas) first is that I know nothing will compare to it. The atmosphere is different and it feels like I’m at my own funeral, but the songs just don’t hit the same way all of Heaven Or Las Vegas does. This doesn’t mean it’s bad at all, just feels like it’s lacking something - and from what I gather the band agrees

I think I’ve heard Donimo, can’t be bothered to check my last.fm history right this second. They’ve got a brilliant thing here, so few lyrics to memorize! Actually, I enjoyed this quite a bit - an early version of Sigur Ros, in some ways, with a bit more new wave electronics thrown in.

Very weird

My second Cocteau Twins album in three days! This one isn't quite as shoegazey as their later Heaven or Las Vegas record, though some tracks get close (Pandora, Amelia). Instead, the music is more pulled back, simpler, softer. What it lacks in complexity, it makes up for with each individual instrument being easier to pick out, and (arguably) a more enthralling set of vocals. A little overdramatic, and heavily 80s-tinged, so it's tough to consider this a timeless masterpiece. (I doubt anyone's arguing that it's timeless.) It's busy enough that you do really have to listen closely, otherwise the songs sound very similar to one another (as others have pointed out). I don't like the drums at all. They feel gimmicky and low-effort, and they take away greatly from the overall quality. It's frustrating, because everything else is good or better. Track #2, Lorelei, is an unexpected turn in sound. The drums have this weird soft electronic mute effect on them. It's very distinctive. I like it, but sadly it isn't repeated anywhere else. The lead vocalist here is also much airier than in their other tracks, and that, to me, makes it smoother and nicer to listen to. Pandora (For Cindy) is incredibly dreamy – enthrallingly so – and it could well be the strongest song here. It's worth mentioning that artists can excel the most when it's impossible to compare them to any of their contemporaries or predecessors. With Heaven Or Las Vegas, I kept hearing ABBA's influence in the vocal delivery. Not here. Treasure's influence is much harder to pin down, and I love that. The song titles all being names of semi-fantasy (or very antiquated) names of women is super nifty. It conjures a sort of fantasy concept album feel – though the music itself doesn't exactly repeat motifs like a typical concept album might. 3/5 Key tracks: Ivo, Lorelei, Pandora (For Cindy)

“Ivo” is such a great song.. it’s earned a permanent spot on at least two of my playlists. The rest of the album feels a bit uneven and, at times, veers into vocally fatiguing territory. It’s a solid 3.5, but I just can’t bring myself to round it up.

This is good but not as good as Four Calendar Cafe or Heaven or Las Vegas.

Dream pop o Dark wave? No lo sé. Tengo que reconocer que llegué tarde a CT. Tarde así como la década pasada, cuando su influencia ya había viajado continentes y generaciones.

Heaven or Las Vegas was one of my favourite discoveries so far. This was fine. Nice. Still quite ethereal. But a bit too twee and boring compared to HotLV.

Guthrie was still tinkering with the sound he was aiming for, but Fraser was already dialed into her own thing. Lorelei justifiably looms large, at least for me, so much so I’d guess the bulk of Domino was created the same day or from the same tracks.

It was alright. I liked the atmosphere of it but nothing really stood out to me, couldn't really understand the lyrics either. C or C+ I'd say.

Heaven or LV had better songs in my opinion. This was a little too trippy for me. Absolutely beautiful soundscapes, but I need a little more to enjoy their music.

I like the Cocteau Twins, but this album amplifies some of their more annoying parts. Dreamy and atmospheric but better enjoyed in small portions.

Tuvieron su momento. Hoy como la new age no se escucha. A destacar la voz de Liz Phair. Una pena que no sean gemelos.

3.5 Dream Pop - short - 10 song release 37:38 This album was the grandparent of Dream Pop and Shoegazing - moved the industry for this reason a lone I lean to a 4. However, I've always dislike Elizabeth vocalizing in nonsensical syllables - seems lazy. For a long time I thought they were French and not Scottish.

Unmemorable dream-pop. Didn’t hate it; didn’t rate it.

This has some moments I could tell inspired artists I love now, and I did enjoy it but the 80s production made me enjoy it less.

Some of these songs are beautiful shoegaze material at their finest (loved "Otterley"). A number of skips though.

Started well (4-5) but deteriorated somewhat. Not as good as Garlands or Head Over Heels.

Of its time, very evocative. Reminded me of My Bloody Valentine unexpectedly

Needed to put me in the correct setting to listen to this. Very dreamy atmosphere.

i like her voice! not sure what she’s saying though

Reasonably okay.

Enjoyable. Track 2 was really good. Prob will never put this on again though. Kind of a precursor to that soft MGMT thing from the mid 2010s.

I like how eclectic and experimental their sound is. However most of the songs didn't really go anywhere.

6/10 - a very distinct sound, Lorelei is a an amazing tune

No 4 star ratings for 8 days now - the algorithm is clearly determined to punish my mental health. Cocteau Twins are one of those bands that I always feel like I should like more - they tick a lot of my personal preference boxes but somehow it never *quite* grabs me. Quite tempted to give 4 stars to break the slump, but sadly the final score 3.499 has to be rounded down.

I've heard lots of people talk about Cocteau Twins, but nothing about them is particularly interesting to me.

kinda weird

kinda spooky atmospheric almost churchy 3/5

Diet Kate Bush

Not the best Cocteau Twins album, that's Heaven or Las Vegas, but this is probably my second favorite. It's a bit front loaded though Liz's vocals really start getting more ambitious and playful. You can really see where artists like Bjork and Tori Amos would take some inspiration (in addition to Liz's contemporary Kate Bush) a decade later.

Whimsy witch music.

While parts of this album are pretty good, I don’t know if Cocteau Twins needed more than one album on this list, and Heaven or Las Vegas gets the edge. That being said, “Lorelei” is a banger. I couldn’t listen to the album as intended because my son kept asking me to repeat that one.

**Laura:** A lot more industrial than what I’ve heard from them on *Heaven or Las Vegas*. I really liked it! It felt more atmospheric and dark. I of course have no idea what they’re saying but that’s okay because the sounds are so interesting that I can’t see myself listening to this for anything but that. *Fav tracks: Persephone; Domino; Pandora (for Cindy)* --- **Emilia:** i liked it but i honestly found quite a lot of it pretty annoying, idk why :( a lot of the elements of the songs were just grating to me for some reason, which has not been my experience with other cocteau twins music…oh well… fav tracks: lorelei; aloysius

Pretty similar to yesterday's Air album.

Ethereal goth rock for post club detox.

This one is more interesting that enjoyable for me. Elizabeth Fraser is a terrific singer but really prefer her with Massive Attack. Clearly an influence on Dream Pop and shoegaze, but again prefer what came in its wake. Kind of a less interesting Kate Bush. Still, good stuff here, esp Ivo and Lorelai

I'm a hypocrite, I guess. You can find reviews from me about meandering, aimless, pretentious music made by art dorks that I just find endlessly dull. By any metric this should fall under that umbrella. But I actually like it! Now there's no real stand out songs I'm going to put on a playlist. Nothing here to sing along with in the shower. What is here is a vibe. Dreamy and ethereal, put this on if you want to space out and think about nothing for a while.

Dreamy. Sounds like Kate Bush

Strange, gothic and infused with production choices which, on other albums might reek of 80s pop cheese, but in this context come off like some weird alien language which is about as far from the mainstream as you can get. Not my favourite Cocteau Twins offering, but still more interesting than many of the albums this project has thrown at me recently. Unique? Yes. Brilliant? I'm not really sure, but I'm happy to bask in the majestic uniqueness for a while regardless.
