Made me feel like i was underwater or being hypnotized or both. Excellent experience.
3.5
Weird
REALLY ENJOYABLE!!!!! I absolutely loved Lorelei, Pandora and Otterley.
Elektronischer Pop mit düsterer Stimmung. Hat was von Kate Bush. 4/5
Day 19. Best tracks: Lorelai, Pandora (for Cindy). Unintelligible, but absolutely heavenly. I'm familiar with Heaven or Las Vegas, but not this bona fide classic. 9/10. Perhaps no skips (I'll need more time with the album to possibly bump up to 10/10). Does this belong on this list? Yes.
Pls go away
8/10 Lorelei is great. The music over all has an ethereal cadence to it. Very good. 11-13-2025

Love this early dream pop. Was fascinated to learn that the parts I can’t understand are not in a different language, she made up words!
I <3 this album. It really sounds a head of its time. An easy but interesting listen. Floaty sounds and make the album melt into one. I feel like I’m lying on a bed with white sheets looking out at the sunshine straight after heavy rain. I find it hard to even choose a favourite because of how good they all sound.
Don’t love the vocals on ‘Lorelei’ but I really liked the ambient structure of ‘Beatrix’. Generally really like this, feels way ahead of its time.
I forgot how much I liked these guys. This was a really nice listen. I'll be back for more of this one.
I really like what the Cocteau Twins do. They make beautiful dream pop music and they do it consistently. Heaven or Las Veagas is their best but Treaure isn’t far behind and that’s saying a lot because Heaven or Las Vegas is a masterpiece. Scotland has a strong musical output and they owe a lot of thanks to Cocteau Twins . 4 stars
I liked it a lot more than I expected. I feel like if you can describe something as dreamy French alt pop, I'm either going to love it or hate it for entirely arbitrary reasons. I loved the instrumentals and vocals all throughout. Some songs are definitely more memorable than others but they're all good. I will be exploring this more in the future. Note to self: learn the bass part from Beatrix
Good vibe sounds not really a plot or thoughts just vibes
Had this album on repeat today and it did not get old at all. No idea which songs were which and no idea what any of them said but I do know I really enjoyed it. I was a big fan of the shoegaze dreampop style and it felt like a great precursor to mbv who I love.
Frankly, I am blown away at how good this album is. When I saw it pop up, and I saw the year was 1984, a feeling of dread washed over me but I need not have worried. This album is lush, and layered, with dreamy, ethereal vocals. While I do think the vocals are a bit shrill for my tastes, it is obvious that this album was the inspiration for the Trip Hop era, and acts like Bjork, and Massive Attack. This is a solid 4 star album, and undeniably an album that is worth listening to before you die.
I see why this is an iconic album. First two tracks didn't grab me but then it really got its footing and took off. Will be looking these peeps up again for me.
Yeah, I dig.
A good dreamy record to have on in the background.
The move to full on dream pop is partially complete. Moving away from the more atmospheric and gothic sound unlocked so much and would reach the apex with Heaven and Los Vegas, one of my favourite albums of all time. It pains me not to give this one 5 stars but depending on my mood, I sometimes lose interest towards the back half. Still a wonderful listen any day.
A fab album with some truly dark tunes.
I listened to this album while lying in bed with a bad cold, half awake and feeling sorry for myself. It turns out that it's an excellent dream pop soundtrack for that situation.
Only got Heaven or Las Vegas, don't know why as I love it. Never explored further, so this is a great nudge to do so. Thoroughly enjoyable listen. Otterley brilliant.
This was brilliant. Very ethereal. Lush and warm. The vocal were sometimes Kate bush-y and other times otherworldly. Just a lot of fun. I'll definitely listen again when I can really indulge in it.
Очень смешанные всегда впечатления от этого альбома. Вроде и интересно, но звук не очень нравится. сама его концепция. Спотыкаюсь, как на многих альбомах периода.
Rating: 9/10 What an ethereal and absolutely gorgeous album. Can definitely be a 5 with more listens, two of the songs are not as good as the rest of it.
Like the name on the tin this album really is a bit of a treasure. Never heard anything of it before but really loved its ambience. Good album to nod off to as I did. This is not a negative as the time of listening was mid afternoon and I’m at an age where I regularly do that. So discovering another album to accompany my slumbers is another benefit of enrolling to this list. 4/5 8/10/25
At first I thought the vocals might drive me nuts, but then the shimmer took over. This is dream music in the truest sense — you don’t understand a word of it, yet it wraps you up in lush, otherworldly beauty. Everything blurs together in a way that feels more like floating than listening, and honestly, I love it.
Great stuff
Trippy, interesting, good vocals. Perhaps deserves some more listens.
Lovely etherial voice! ★★★★
A lot more industrial than what I’ve heard from them on Heaven or Las Vegas. I really liked it! It felt more atmospheric and dark. I of course have no idea what they’re saying but that’s okay because the sounds are so interesting that I can’t see myself listening to this for anything but that. Fav tracks: Fav tracks: Persephone; Domino; Pandora (for Cindy)
Har jag blivit en shoegazetönt? Fan, lite oroande. Hur som helst. Bra skiva, gillar soundet överlag rätt mycket. Ändå mer melodisk än en ren ljudvägg. Sista låten är svinbra! Även Lorelei. Kul!
I've never had so much enjoyment in trying not to fall asleep. This is some really good music with nonsensical lyrics that just feel right whether they mean anything or not. I haven't been the biggest fan of shoegaze so far, but this album is really good. I'm gonna go to sleep now
Having reached the ethereal phase, the Cocteau Twins are unquestionably off into their own strange territory. Let your ears speak of it to everyone.
This might be the most difficult album to rate I've had in here. I knew the gist of Cocteau Twins, romantic dream pop but had never listened to them, certainly not this album. So to discover what often seems like a "Hounds of Loveless" (Kate Bush meets My Bloody Valentine) was a treat! 5 stars, so far. But as I kept listening... the machine drums? Okay, mostly fine. The production which makes it often sound like a anciently low bitrate radio stream? Uuh, not so much. And then the lyrics, vocals. Which I should be cool with, as my brain typically doesn't process a singer's words outside of their tonal and timbral qualities but here, I DO process that it is: nonsense. Adriano Celentano's "Prisencolinensinainciusol". Or, in "Pandora", the other way around, imitating Italian - I guess? - but it very unpleasantly reminds me of religious nutjob-zealots' made-up 'speaking in tongues'. People have apparently tried to transcribe it into English and the result is... Gollum? "Forty feet, forty franks Fish fate, fiss fate, clean fish Formidiable, formidiable, formidiable Formidiable, formidiable, formidiable" So that's distracting and sadly, dare I say, cringe. I don't know. Will have to sit with this one for a little longer. [...] Rating Day. While this may deserve a 5, certainly for what it was the midwife to for music to come, I can't say that I fully anjoyed it.
I've never heard of this artist before, but the music was ethereal and lovely. Definitely interesting.
PRETTY FUN
Music that plays in the alien jazz bar in star wars
Ethereal, atmospheric, everything you expect from the Cocteau’s
Not bad
Why are they called Cocteau Twins if there are three of them? Bad band name. 0/5. I'm kidding. Cocteau Twins is not a bad band name and Treasure is a really good album. This is the kind of alternative thing I'm looking for! I've started to learn that I really enjoy music that feels ethereal or dreamy. Sigur Rós, Beach House, and now Cocteau Twins help paint this picture. I don't know why it is, but I love it. So, what makes Treasure stick out? Well, let's start with something that could definitely be complained about by some. I can't understand a word they're saying. Yeah, that's the one thing that I knew about Cocteau Twins before listening to this album. Elizabeth Fraser's vocals have frequently been described as incomprehensible and that's not an exaggeration. I'm not even sure she's singing actual words! It doesn't help that genius doesn't have lyrics for these songs at all. I don't hate this though. I think it makes the dreaminess of the music hit a bit harder. The singing style is certainly unique, but not in a bad way. It's mostly pleasant. But of course, the actual music is the focus and I love it so much. These compositions are just wonderful. The atmosphere is really something to behold. It's got elements of shoegaze, post-punk, and other genres, but it's kind of its own thing entirely. I like that. The songs feel different enough from each other to make the whole album feel warranted in its existence, with songs like "Lorelei" and "Pandora (For Cindy) sticking out to me in how spectacular they are. I've got to say, this is really cool. Apparently this isn't even the best album they have on this list. Heaven or Las Vegas is the album that I most frequently see mentioned as their masterpiece, so I'm pretty excited for that. We'll see if that gets a 5 eventually, but I think I'll have to give Treasure a high 4/5.
I love not knowing a single thing they’re singing for a whole album
The sound sticks. Love this band.
Treasure is a very special album, dreamy, ethereal, and wildly melodic. The lush guitar textures and Elizabeth Fraser’s otherworldly vocals create a soundscape that feels almost timeless, existing in its own universe. It’s an album that invites you to drift away, full of atmosphere and mystery, yet always anchored by strong melodies. I really like it, and it stands out as one of Cocteau Twins’ most captivating works. 4/5
This Cocteau Twins album had a much darker sound than 'Heaven Or Las Vegas' that I had previously which was more of an uplifting album. This has a gloomier, shoe-gazey vibe although still manages to be dreamy and ethereal. It's an eerie and unsettling listen at times and a combination that I liked. It actually got fairly heavy at times. 'Persephone' is a pretty rocky sounding track with some nice guitar and 'Cicely' sounds outright industrial. 'Aloysius' is the most uplifting track here. I actually Googled Cocteau Twins lyrics and there were Reddit threads with discussing the most accurate interpretation of the lyrics, which is absolutely bizarre, but clearly shows that the difficult to decipher words are a deliberate choice but they add to the surreal sound. I personally enjoyed the vibe of this album more than their previous album on this list. They're an interesting band with a very intriguing sound. It just scrapes a four for being so unusual.
8/10…dreampop / shoegaze
Awesome
Simlish meditation sessions
Faktiskt rätt bra, lite speciell
Like me it but wish I could understand the lyrics
Somehow, I never got into them listening to individual songs on the John Peel show. But this is good.
Don't remember a thing
Actually very nice. Chill vibes.
Kinda like Kate Bush but not as good. Not terrible though.
Very floaty and quite an easy listen. Enjoyed this more than I thought and listened twice
The Cocteau twins are everything I should hate but I actually really like them. They do it properly and that’s the rub. 4 stars.
Sonically, CT were breaking ground unlike any other band at the time, and it's truly fascinating to listen to. While I don't think this crop of songs is as strong as followup albums, this shows the band solidifying their sound. And few bands can solidify their sound while continuing to reinvent themselves.
Cocteau Twins is one of those bands whose music has the innate ability to shift your reality to fit the audio worlds they create, no matter your mood, vibe, or preoccupations.
- You can tell the songs are programmed because of the way they just sort of peter out or stop abruptly. - I don't love the dime store drum machine sound, but it is a vibe. I'm sure this was a conscious choice (both the sound and the use of a drum machine) but couldn't they have found a drummer to play with them???? - Vocals are incredible. The lyrics and affectation of a totally alien language are kind of silly but it works, because the melodic choices are so strange and the vocalist is SO strong. Adds to the dreaminess. - I had been listening on headphones for about 20 minutes when my wife came in the room and I had to turn off the album. It took me a few seconds to adjust. This music sucks you into it's own mad dream-logic. Everything is familiar but isn't working like you expect - words are being spoken but they don't make sense. You recognize people around you but they don't look anything like themselves. You're swimming in the air for some reason. Nothing else sounds like this. FOUR STARS
4/5
i really liked that wow. to quote zozo: incense burning music
Dreamy and really cool to listen to. I lowkey thought this was a 90s album because I didn’t peep the year. Way cool for 1984.
Always loved these guys & the sound they created. Liz Frazer's use of her voice as another instrument rather than singing words was truly inspirational.
Brilliant. Cocteau Twins are a group I’ve only listened to recently but their sound is amazing.
Sounds like a goth fairy tale. Just beautiful. I definitely prefer HOLV but this album has a certain darkness to it that makes it irresistible. A close second no doubt. Favorite track: Pandora (for Cindy)
Nice
I can barely catch any of the lyrics so I've no idea what they are singing about. I do however love their voices and the whole album is a great listen.
7/2/25. Cocteau Twins might be a secret favorite of mine. Of the albums I've listened to so far, I've really enjoyed and have come back to multiple times. Really like this one for demonstrating dream pop/shoegaze effectively.
Really good album. I can’t fault anything about it but at the same time it’s missing some element that would push it to full marks. Top Track - Persephone
Sublime. Liz Frazers voice and Robin Guthrie's guitar are a match made in heaven.
Stunning. The vocals are incredible. Great production. Beautiful album
17 y.o. me would be disgusted with me not giving this 5* but hearing it back it certainly has its moments but probably not as consistent as I remember it. I still love the production and the bands overall sound.
This feels very ethereal out of the gate; like a proto Beach House vibe. Especially on Lorelei there is a strong genetic line between the two acts with the use of distant punched out drum machines, shimmering synths, and breathy vocals that makes for a wonderfully hazy atmosphere. Love everything about Persephone. Vocals work is solid above the Police-esq shimmering guitar tone and sadboi bass tone. Didn't take extensive notes through the back half -- sort of just let it wash over me and enjoyed the experience. When I first tried to listen to this on my flight last week, it really didn't click, but after a few listens today I am fully swayed in the other direction. This is fantastic. high 4
Definitely enjoyed the last Cocteau Twins album. Crazy it's been almost 2 years since we listened to it! Always down for some dream pop. I can definitely see people not vibing with the voice. Not exactly my favorite eithre but definitely works with some songs. Weirdly reminds me of Bjork on some tracks. Some of these tracks are extremely beautiful albeit a little less refined as Heaven or Las Vegas. Still love it just not as much. This lands in the 3.5 range but going to bump up.
Really enjoyed this. Beautiful vocal melodies. The nuclear powered snare drum took a little to get used to but otherwise great
Darker and more jagged than the later, shinier and more mature efforts (including the gloriously glimmering Heaven or Las Vegas). Still, this is quite strong overall and well worth knowing. "Pandora" and "Aloysius" are particular standouts.
Incredible sound but its not music I listen to. Deserves more listens from me.
Probably not my favorite Cocteau Twins album, but still quite good - their dark, ethereal sound is something that always appeals to me. 3.5
Could have done without the thin 80s drum machine but the rest was great.
So I got this after getting Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" yesterday and first felt despair but after listening am happy. This is weird done well. I looked up the lyrics as I was listening but realized that was a mistake--best not to know. Just enjoy the airy bubbles of pop.
Not my favorite of theirs, but still good.
Someone please help me I can’t stop gazing at my shoes and now I’m elevating
Pleasant enough to listen to, good background while I worked and something I could see seeking out again maybe. But at the same time, it didn't blow me away, and I probably won't remember much about it later.
So evocative and beautifully ethereal. Strange intriguing melodies and intricate harmonies. Pretty amazing although you need to be in the mood.
Absolutely adore Cocteau Twins, and while this isn't my favourite album, there are some huge standouts here. Lorelei is hypnotic enough to die to and Pandora (for Cindy) is timeless and wonderful. I hope to see more of them on this list because they are still way ahead of their time.
Cool vibes, good songs, enjoyable album.
Weird and kind of wonderful. I’m not sure why this works but it does. Can definitely heat the influence it has had on others. Best played rather loud
This was interesting! A mix of Kate Bush and something else
Gorgeous, amazing ethereal sound, loved it and want to resist while high
Sometimes Spotify puts itself on a loop without my permission, so I ended up listening to this 4 times. I am not complaining. I liked it. Also, someone said the singer sounds like Kate Bush, and now I can't get that out of my head. 😂
Very other-worldy from start to finish. I like it. It’s moody. I think how much a person will enjoy it is going to be heavily dependent on the mood they are in at the time. I can’t say I love it, definitely not 5 stars for me. Three stars doesn’t seem enough. Four is probably a stretch. This is a true 3.5 star album. I may round up because they really don’t sound at all like anybody else I’ve heard and I’m almost 500 albums in.
Very good
Who else creates songs like this? Holy smokes, what a group of singular musicians. Atmospheric melding of dream pop, shoegaze, and 80s sounds. I'm fully onboard the Cocteau Twins train.
Not quite a 5 for me but close
as close as they can get to industrial dream pop... love the drum sound on here
Definitely an album to experience. I’ve adjusted to the Cocteau Twins dream pop or early shoegaze sound and it’s a really pleasant time. Ahead of its time and a very nice listen. 8/10
Ethereal and layered. Enjoyed more than I expected at the start.
This was great. I don't know if it's an everyday listen for me but I really enjoyed it.
Beautiful and ethereal dream pop album from the mid-80s. Not as great in songswriting as Heaven or Las Vegas a few years later, though a very enjoyable listen from start to finish nonetheless. 4.5 downgraded to 4 stars.
Very odd, not bad but I don't think i could genre this music.
i liked the other album we had by the cockatoo twins more, but this one was still pleasantly vibey, mysterious, water level-coded
Favorite Track: Ivo
4.5
the three unavoidables of life: death, tax and dream pop albums that are highly rated on rym. but good news! it's more poppy and goth-like than dreamy. and the part that i hate about dream pop is how dreamy it is. 4/5
I still don't understand it. I like it, but I don't understand it. ;-)
This isn't gonna be a very long review, I promise you. I mean, this album's very simple to get — so simple, in fact, that I didn't even feel the need to take notes on it. Like the last Cocteau Twins album my group got, this is vibes music, through and through. It's so much "vibes," that it can honestly border on being ambient music. Like, sure, yeah, there are words, but they really don't matter. They may as well be singing gibberish — as long as the vocal melody helps keep you floating along, it doesn't matter. And, sure there are some spots where the vocal melody seemed... Maybe a bit too "twee" for my tastes? If that's the right word? I'unno. Even though I'm bringing it up, it's hardly an issue. I mean, this is the one album where I find yawning during it to be a **compliment**, 'coz that means you're drifting away and that the album's doing its job. So... Yeah. For sure, this is gonna bring my "average words per review" total down, but, y'know, whatever. I don't really have anything else I feel like I wanna say. Jus' give it the same 4 I have the last Cocteau Twins album we got and leave it at that. It's neat stuff.
I love Cocteau Twins and played HOLV immediately after just for fun.
Muy tranquilo y fácil de digerir para escucharlo de fondo o cuando estés triste en momentos.
I like the Cocteau Twins the more I listen to them. I love the use of really primitive drum machine sounds on this album. It also evokes a lot of Cure or Siouxsie for me.
lovely and lush
Better than heaven or last Vegas. Nuff sed
It’s good, but it’s no Heaven or Las Vegas
This album is quite unlike any other on the list that I’ve heard so far. Dreamy, etherial vocals with random, constructed lyrics in an unknown language combined with swirling guitars and synth, recalling some of the ambient, gothic gloomscapes of The Cure. Underpinning it is an occasionally incongruous drum machine making some of the tracks potentially danceable to (at least in 80s era goth discos where everyone was dressed in black and swaying softly). The result is a shimmering marble of an album, that I’ve listened to on repeat for most of today, occasionally singing along to lines like ‘Hocus Pocus Donimoka’ or words to that effect.
Really good and foundational album for all kind of dreamy/etheral music. Even though it's "dreamy", it's far from boring, with nice compositions and a voice that lifts you to another dimension.
I was vaguely familiar with some of the Cocteau Twins music but I don't think I had heard any of this before. It's great - gives a kind of gothic Kate Bush vibe. Dark, gothic, 80s alt? I'm all in. The whole album is super atmospheric and moody. I love the mostly unintelligible vocals. Some really good guitars and bass sort of hiding in the background for the most part. This is by no means a perfect album but I will absolutely explore more from them because of hearing this today. And you can't really ask for more than that. 4/5
Ok this speaks to my soul.
Enjoyed this. Dark and mesmerising. Searching out the back catalogue.
I liek.
Het heeft iets donkers, en dat is eigenlijk echt best wel lekker. Ook leuk dat alle titels meisjesnamen zijn
In comparison to Heaven or Las Vegas it is miles apart, but on its own it has some decent tracks. Starts out strong and then kind of withers away and never really kept my interest until closer to the end of the album. its between a 3.5 and a 4
While not quite hitting the same stride as Heaven or Las Vegas for me, Treasure still manages to capture the feeling of living in a dream. This dream, however, feels more like a cool, cryptic vision of a ghostly figure beckoning you into the woods. I think the gothic rock parts were especially well-done, and it might make me want to check out Cocteau Twins' other goth stuff.
High breathy vocals With a mystic ambiance And a dreamy daze
I hadn’t heard of The Cocteau Twins only a couple of years ago. I’ve previously listened to and reviewed Heaven Or Las Vegas which I did quite enjoy, and I think this album is probably on parr (I say this without looking at my previous review so I don’t know what I actually scored it). I really like the use of vocals as an instrument with ambiguous lyrics. It may be a bit gimmicky (my stinky other half certainly thinks so) but I really like that. And I’ve definitely found a new genre that I really like through Cocteau Twins in dream-pop.
I liked this one! What an interesting sound
Beautiful vocals in this ethereal dream pop album that has a very light and air-y feeling. Standouts are "Aloysius" and closer "Donimo".
There’s something about their sound I love. Lorelei, Beatrix are sick - so weird and offbeat, but compelling. Reminds me of Mitski in the best way. This band has been a real discovery for me in this exercise.
This band is pretty damn cool for the right mood. I need to go back and relisten to HOLV - feel like that one could grow on me more. Fun to listen to this alongside Jesus and Mary Chain today - another Scottish band with some good noise. Psychocandy came out a year later, and oddly, they both have songs about "Cindy".
The Cocteau Twins seem to bridge the line between ambient and pop, while others tend to stay either side of it. Treasure is a fantastic compendium of all that they are capable of, from the slow-dance numbers of Beatrix and Otterley to the syncopated grand etherealism of Persephone and Cicely. You needn’t worry about conventional song structure, or indeed lyrics, as you can simply ooze into the alien yet inviting songscape engineered by Elizabeth Fraser & Co., where twinkles and deep bass / percussion leaves some subsequent albums to sound so incredibly normal next to this friendly behemoth, stretching the ‘pop’ genre to its limits, with your speaker’s high-frequency tested too. What is Elizabeth Fraser saying? We don’t exactly know, but it sure sounds like something descended from the heavens, brought down via your dreams to tickle your every aural sense.
Liked this a lot even though I never have any idea what they’re saying
Quite an enjoyable one
Very ethereal with haunting dreamy vocals - nice to listen to, but it doesn't do anything for me.
Gorgeous stuff. Warm shimmering sounds shine gently throughout this album. Elizabeth Fraser does have a very beautiful voice, though "The Voice of God" is definitely laying it on thick lol.
Pretty cool album, glad I listened to it. I thought this was an electronic group this whole time.
After being bathed in a darkness of their own devising Cocteau Twins had allowed themselves to let the light in, if only for a time. Treasure sounds like the accomplishment of finally getting the parts down just about right, even if it doesn't feel as such from the band's point of view. Luckily for them, and for us, they will only get much better from here. And we only have this treasure to thank. Favorites: Ivo, Lorelei, Beatrix, Persephone, Amelia, Aloysius, Cicely, Donimo.
Dreamy and lovely
Liked.
4.5 Lorelei is perfect. Such a good album
4/5 weird but compelling
Could really do with a mix that brings out the vocals more but is overall really interesting and cool.
Finally I get to fix the egregious error I made in my last Cocteau Twins album review... As someone who used to live in Grangemouth, Cocteau Twins are the biggest thing ever to come out of that town apart from refined petrochemicals and the **M9** motorway in either direction....
This is why I love this project. I've heard the name but never dug in because I thought it was a dumb band name. Yes, I'm an idiot. Ethereal, atmospheric, shoe gaze, a little goth, angelic vocals. I imagine sexy Victorian vampires listen to this, if they had the technology to do so.
Etheral wave where the guitars echo and create a wave of noise that create space in this otherworldly reality her music is set in. Frazer speaks in a mixture of English, Latin, and Gaelic among others, using the beauty of language as the primary instrument itself.
I love this genre generally speaking, but this surprisingly the first time I've really given Cocteau Twins a listen. This album is probably going to take me more than a handful of play to really connect with, somewhat in part to the production being a little grating at times (multiple vocal parts piled on each other drowning out almost everything else). That said, I do love the moments between with wistful and ethereal instrumentals and the songs themselves are beautiful.
There are one or two Cocteau Twins albums that I like a little better as a complete body of work. But this has some of my favorite tracks.
So advanced for 1984. Truly unique.
This was different, I liked it
I do enjoy the Cocteau Twins
I just can't help but love Elizabeth Fraser's voice. This album is pretty cool, and something that stood out in that era for sure.
This is a vibe. It's the rare example of an album that I pretty thoroughly enjoy without being able to pick out a hook or standout track. I'm getting Kate Bush meets MBV. Right up my driveway.
Can't understand her but the vibes are off the charts
Lost in a dream
To me every song sounds like a closer to me every song sounds like a closer to me every song sounds like a closer to me every song sounds like a closer to me Cool unique sound
I don’t know what these chicks are saying, but it’s dreamy and I like it. 4/5 Highlights: Pandora (For Cindy) Aloysius Domino
I have a weird relationship with these guys, I like everything i've heard from them, but it never quite clicks with me hard enough that I love it. I think 'Heaven or Last Vegas' is the closest they've come to really hooking me, this one not as much. But again, I do enjoy the album quite a bit, it's gorgeous.
this album is very good once you start listening to it
7/10 I love the ambient fell of this album. Only problem is that it is only really meant for the background Favourite Song=Donimo Least Favourite Song=Persephone
Beautiful record, first time listening to it, ethereal dream pop that I'd imagine is hugely influencial within the genre, lyrics are hard to decipher but really the vocals are there to create layers and melody. Very much a mood record, one to listen to all the way through while chilling on the couch with headphones
Lovely dream pop. Lorelei, Persephone ... standouts. Sometimes the nonsensical lyrics seem to work, but there are times where it gets a bit too cutesy (Pandora (for Cindy)).
Different and enjoyable! This reminded me of Bjork's music. Kind of ethereal and otherworldly, but very melodic and pleasant. I would definitely listen again, was over before I knew it.
Albumi #98, 03.11.2024 Skottibändi Cocteau Twinsin kolmas studioalbumi ilmestyi vuonna 1984 4AD-levymerkille. Yhtye soittaa mukavan kuuloista dream poppia jonka täydentää Elizabeth Fraserin persoonallisen kaunis lauluääni. Cocteau Twinsiä voi pitää shoegazen esiasteena.
Perfect music for putting up Halloween decorations or carving pumpkins
A good, ethereal album with haunting vocals. Some songs land, some are background filler. Overall enjoyable and a trip back in time.
Ethereal, unintelligible, wonderful. Best with excellent headphones.
October 13, 2024 Is that not the snare from “When the Levee Breaks”…? Either way, it’s really distracting Bad drum machine aside, I did enjoy the overall experience, definitely fits an old forest in a dark fantasy movie. Hearing another album with Fraser's wordless vocals convinces me Sigur Rós was inspired by the Cocteau Twins. HL: “Persephone”, “Pandora”, “Donimo”, “Lorelei”
Satisfying album from start to finish, with a unique, dreamy sound.
Super cool album! And very unique. This felt like My Bloody Valentine meets Bjork meets Depeche Mode and has a drink with Kate Bush. I love all of the building elements and the dark minor tones. You really can't ever 100% tell what she is saying, but you're always entranced with it. Its builds, then it crashes, then it takes you in weird rabbit holes of ambiance. Each song is unique in its own way, but also fits comfortably in the record and never feels out of place. They play with different vocal melodies along with different tones of keys, synths and guitars. I was really impressed with this record. It actually surprised me it came out in 85! This feels like it could have been a 90s record.
Geweldig album, moest even een paar keer luisteren, maar elke keer werd het beter. Gave arrangementen, gewoon echt goede dreampop.
Dreamlike music. I really enjoyed this. 8/10
Aside from being terribly embarrassed that I was waiting for "Hold Me Now" to play and thought "boy, that song just does NOT fit this vibe," I really enjoyed—both the music and the lesson in how to distinguish twins.
Je préfère Heaven or Las Vegas, mais cet album aussi est vraiment une belle découverte. C'est vraiment bien comment ce band réussit à se démarquer de ses contemporains et comment ça sone encore très frais aujourd'hui. 7.5/10
Really enjoy dreampop in general, so this was a very interesting listen being so early on genre wise. Solid project.
Great voice Liz is amazing. Good tight sound
Yeah! This is a fun album. Surprisingly dark.
I enjoyed this album. I got a different Cocteau Twins album early on in this list, and I've always wondered if I didn't give it a fair shake (I've heard several other people praise that album in the intervening years). This album is great. It very much has an 80s sound, but doesn't sound stereotypical. The vocals are consistently great and they are always doing interesting things. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this was heavily influenced by Kate Bush 4/5
cocteau twins in general, and probably bits of this album in particular, are absolutely responsible for my love of dreamy, ethereal female vocals. lorelei is the obvious favorite, but the whole album is strong. as an added bonus, it's a lovely return to any number of happy hours frittered away in the art rooms of various schools, hanging out with the other fun kids - most of whom i've not spoken with in ages. in a roundabout way, it's been nice to hear their voices again, by way of ms. fraser
Enchanting, angelic, and intoxicating
I’m glad I took some time between listening to Music For Airports/Ágætis Byrjun and Treasure, because I think that that much ambient soundscape might have killed me. I did wind up getting Treasure, but it took me a little while to get into it. One of the interesting things I noticed was that, despite it’s ethereal sound, there was still a recognisable Scottishness to the sound, something similar to other Scottish Post-Punk and New Wave I enjoy. I’m now wondering if there’s a way of quantifying Scottishness in music, or if it’s just a case of those bands being of a scene and so sharing similar aesthetic goals and interests. Treasure was another album that was enhanced by my listening while walking along the beautiful Celtic seascapes of Gwynedd. The last album that received that benefit was the Goldfrapp one at the beginning of the summer, and I think the chilly mid-autumn afternoon suited Treasure better than a warm sunny day would. I enjoyed it a lot, but there’s still an isolation I feel from it which means I don’t quite love it. But that’s the beauty of art isn’t it?
Cocteau Twins is lovely. I love the contrast between the dark atmosphere and the high vocals.
Cinemático, avant-garde e lirico. Sonoridade super atual.
I knew the name but never really looked into their music. I know Elizabeth Fraser through her work with Massive Attack, especially Teardrop, and I liked it a lot. So it is not surprising that I also like her performance on Treasure. Her ethereal voice and those aural/atmospheric soundscapes combine to a dreamy experience, sometimes contrasted with the beat of the drum machine.
7/10 This one was heavy on the vibes and lighter on the adrenaline Dreamy pop-rock, drum machines and ethereal vocals that could almost be medieval style at times Can hear this as an influence still today, even in things as diverse as current French electronic Best: Domino
a really really strong debut, heaven and las vegas clears for me personally but this is a strong offering
I like Heaven or Las Vegas more but this is a worthy step on the way to it
Perfect for early 80s moody teenagers looking to goth out all night in their bedrooms
You know, I really like this. Especially after I stopped attempting to figure out the lyrics and just went with it. I can see how this accelerated dream pop. The vibes are strong.
FAVO: Ivo, Lorelei, Persephone, Pandora, Donimo
Ethereal sounding, like it came out of a fantasy dream. Sometimes it got a bit too weird. I can see Tarja-era Nightwish being influenced by this. Stand-out: Pandora (for Cindy)
Ethereal loveliness from CT. Not so many bangers on this album but still respect it as a very unique style and way ahead of it's time
You really don't get enough etherial waltzing in pop these days.
Je connais et aime beaucoup Cocteau Twins, en particulier la musicalité du chant. Je possède cet album, mais ce n'est pas mon préféré du groupe. =>4/5
★★★★½
Love CT. Not the best album but still a great vibe. 4/5
Fuck yeah, that was great. Didn't understand a word but loved it.
vibes
3.75
Breathy, floaty, dreamy. Like an otherworldly ambient Kate Bush. Almost Om Nommy Nom Song levels of relaxation. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Lorelei Date listened: 06/07/24
man i love the cocteau twins
Really enjoyed this. Didn't like Cocteau Twins when I was younger. Still a bit grating to listen to as whole, more enjoyable dipping in and out. Personally, I like Heaven & Las Vegas more.
The Cocteau Twins were a Scottish band that made ethereal syn-pop songs, and Treasure was their third full-length album. The dreamy nature of the songs is achieved with affect-laden instruments and Elizabeth Frazer's vocals, which are often just vocalizations, and not distinct lyrics. This is an interesting collection of engaging songs, that pushed the boundaries of pop music towards electronic soundscapes.
incredible album. didnt expect to like it as much as i did. thought i wasnt liking a song and then all of a sudden it hits me how good it actually is.
Fascinating, deeply ephemeral but kinda too spacy
Another album where shoegaze meets goth, and I am absolutely here for it! The Cocteau Twins excelled at dreamy and ethereal sounds from instrumentation to vocals, and this album is no exception to that. It is said that this is the album where Cocteau Twins really found their footing, and while they themselves regard this album as not being good, it is highly regarded by fans as among the best, if not the best. Speaking of juxtapositions, the juxtaposition of song titles with the lyrics is an interesting one. On surface level, several of the song titles make it seem as if these songs are going to be mythological in topic. And of course the celestial sounds of the album lend to this assumption as well. But upon listening and hearing the actual lyrics, that doesn't really end up being the case. Even lead singer Elizabeth Fraser would go on to say that the songs are not about mythology. That said, I think it tends to take on a life of its own, because too many traits of the songs and the music line up and attract new age and pagan-adjacent listeners. I was aware of Cocteau Twins prior to this project, but the project has brought them back into my mind and left me wanting to explore more of their discography! When albums on this project accomplish that, it's always a win, in my opinion. This album comes in around a 3.5 for me; I didn't love it quite as much as their other album on this project. That said, it hooked me and highly intrigued me and that's worth something to me, so I'm giving it the round up!
A beautiful fever dream of an album
Need a Duolingo course for Cocteau Twins lyrics. Still enjoyed it, not as much as their later albums from the 90s, but still a really good album. Favourites: Lorelei, Donimo.
Been looking forward to this one since i saw it pop onto the list. First time listening to an album. Loved it. Exactly what i expected really, but more of it
Very good stuff. Crazy this came out in 1984, it feels well ahead of its time.
Great soundtrack to solo highway driving. Surprised I've never heard any of this but will add it to the roster for future travel. Loved singing along 🤣
I loved the voice of the lead singer omg! It was so angelic, and it contrasted well with a lot of the music. I really enjoyed this album. 4.49 stars... I think it just misses being rounded up to a 5.
After a long day in London (bad place) with my train back not getting in until after 2 in the morning, what a day to be greeted home with some Scotch Music.
Do not listen to this without proper headphones, very awkward experience on knock-off airpods. Hits a very nice ambience with better quality.
Why’s this album art so bad? There’s something about it that screams 2004 emo act along with all the songs being names. I know literally nothing about the Cocteau Twins. Oh wow this is beautiful. I don’t know if I’ve heard anything quite like this. It’s relaxing but somehow also energetic it just makes me feel good. The bass on Beatrix feels like another singer paired with the actual singer it’s beautiful and haunting, this is so good
This one surprised me and was very enjoyable. I must like dance music more than I thought I did.
I think I really enjoyed this, its etheral, chilled vibes kinda reminded me of a drive through America in a convertible
This was one of the first albums I owned, weirdly. I don't know how or why. Maybe I was looking for things that were a bit like The Cure? I remember the vinyl cover was a pleasingly thick, matte-feeling, cardboard. Anyway, it was a bit of a cul-de-sac of musical exploration, in that, I quite liked it but not enough to become a fan. And I still feel the same way, like, I quite enjoy listening to it because I have to for 1001 albums, but I can't really see myself returning to it again. Nonetheless, it's a unique sound and I'm going to give it a 4 because I can. So there.
Ah, nothing like the Cocteau Twins. Ethereal and lovely. Makes me think of my college days and the friends who loved them, who all surely have had cats with the same names as any of the songs on here.
A bit challenging to dance to or sing along with, but it was nice sound to just lie and listen to.
No super strong feelings in either direction for me. It's nice.
This was surely a very ethereal experience. As I listened I looked for some lyrics on Apple Music, but there were none to be found. I decided it was some kind of imaginary language. Then I googled and discovered many of the songs had words… but I’m not sure of the meaning… A decent soundtrack for a sunny afternoon, if a little samey by the end.
Amazing!
Like it
Beach House long before Beach House. As good as I hoped it would be. Maybe even a little better.
Prehistoric shoegaze is rad
This was quite fun, very ethereal
already sorta familiar with this record. lorelei and pandora are the clear stand out tracks here but most songs are solid enough. 7/10
How did I miss them?? Reminds me of Siouxie and I really enjoyed it.
I was pleasantly surprised, not expecting something so floaty and ethereal. Definitely add to my background and chill playlist.
Lorelei Persephone Pandora
Beautiful and haunting. Just how i like it.
Enjoyed it
I really liked this. Maybe it was the time of day I was listening butbI’d definitely listen to it again. 4*
Riktigt coolt sound. Det tog mig några låtar innan jag fattade att det inte var på engelska. Väldigt ”drömigt” och en del snygga ackord. Kommer nog börja lyssna på dem mer i framtiden.
Dreamy, i like
It was okay. I'm glad I got to to hear them though bc I had no idea what their sound was like.
Everything I said about the Cocteau Twins in my last album review still stands. Because I won't lie, I can't really distinguish between some of their music. It never feels like a collection of distinctive songs, but rather some ephemeral frequency that my head managed to tune into for a while. I'm not able to sign anything I heard, but it was unearthly and magical. Always great to start the work day with some Cocteau.
Que cosa tan bonita de disco, de verdad.
.08/1001 I agree with the opinion of many people. This album is ethereal and quite dreamy. It is a very pleasant sound and quite relaxing. Although I don't think it's the best of what's on the list. It's a very good album, it's not perfect but it's really good. Notable songs: Ivo, Lorelei and Pandora (for Cindy)
I cant make out a word that's being said, but like it, it's just a vibe. Some delightfully dated 80's drum machine sounds too
Ethereal of course, but I’m just impressed by Elizabeth Fraser’s voice and the way she uses seemingly nonsensical lyrics that barely resemble English to create sounds with her mouth and voice that are so magical. In many ways she reminds me of Bjork, with her exploration of vocal sounds. A lot of it is about shape and the power of repetition to create mini melodies. This magic on top of the shoegaze guitar and bass and pulsing drum machine makes for an otherworldly experience. Lorelei is probably the best example of their sound and one of the greatest indie/dream pop songs of all time. The rest of it is also very good, but maybe not as fully realized as Heaven or Las Vegas.
Heaven or Las Vegas is definitely a 5 and this one isn’t as good but still pretty dang good.
Good for background music
Je sais pas dans quelle langue ils chantent, mais c’est cool pareil inquiétez-vous pas là
Super gothy. Super ethereal. It's good background soundtrack music. I'm not really sure how I land on it. I don't love it, but it's really too good to be disliked though I could totally understand why some would. If I found a decently priced copy on vinyl, I'd have it in my collection.
Des sonorités interessantes
favourite song: persephone really good, had only heard heaven or las vegas before which is still my favourite album of theirs however
Ethereal rock, shimmery and dreamlike. Soft echoing drums, reverbed vocals and keys, just filling each song with a pop sweetness. Some special lightning in a bottle type creativity. Swelling, pulsing, moving, like an ocean performing ballet. Twirling, lifting, inspiring.
This had a lot of nice atmosphere. The other album that I got from them on this list was just okay but this was quite enjoyable. Will return to this one again.
Very nice sound from this band.
Ta bien 👍
Beautiful vibe. Perfect morning listen. I have never heard any songs from this album even though I know it’s a band I enjoy.
Really enjoyed this one. And completely new to me. Dreamlike melodies... that are dreamy! Will revisit for sure, but a definite pleasant surprise.
Pues muy bonito. Un poco de voz de locas, pero bonico.
somehow in my profound musical ignorance i thought Cocteau Twins was a 90's 00's band lol. this is good music and in so much defiances of what 80's mainstream was. additional star for the correct use of synths
4/5
So advanced for 1984. Truly unique. Great band. Can’t remember the last time I listened to a full album. This was a treat.
What a bizarre album. And yet, I loved it. Reminded me of Enigma.
Dreamy and intelligable, just how I like it
Интересное звучание
Fairy-like vives (kinda like Enya), angelical duo. From the 80s, I like this. 3.5, rounded up.
Pues muy bonito. Un poco de voz de locas, pero bonico.
Tot m’n schrik vond ik dit interessant. Ik vond het ook niet klinken alsof het al 39 jaar oud was.
Dreamy. Floaty. Pretty. Ahead of its time by a _lot_. I really like this album. I understand that it's not for everybody, but it is definitely for me.
First time through I was perplexed, but then it grew on me. Then I felt like the world was a better place through their musings and I'm genuinely glad I heard this. I'm not sure if I would ever listen again, but worth the listen :)
Fantastic moody 80s vibes. Great for driving around the city in the rain
Felt like I was in an 80s coming of age movie where the protagonist is a little twisted but we root for em anyway. I enjoyed lots!
Dramatique, mystérieux, mélodieux, dense; belle voix. J'aime vraiment beaucoup
Will continue to listen to the discography. Pleasantly surprised
This album doesn’t at all sound like something you’d normally hear in the 80s, really unique. However, most of the songs are monotonous and a bit one note. The last two songs have great soundscapes in there though. It’s ok.
Þetta er ansi lúnkið. Töff gítareffectar og mjög margt að gerast í söngnum. Níundatugs indie og mér að skapi. Fyrirgef þeim þennan trommuheila.
So it turns out that any preconception I had about the Cocteau Twins is completely false as now I have listened to them, I actually doubt I've ever really listened to anything by them before. Entirely fitting the shoegaze genre, this is ethereal, dreamy alternative pop. At times Kate Bush-esque and even Chapterhouse on account of the undecipherable vocals. All in all a bit of a musical education.
I'm a fan. The vinyl of this one is in the garage. Such a unique approach and sound. Ambient music really had fallen off from the last Eno records until these guys showed up. The gibberish / made up language sounds really add something and make this truly unusual. I'm reminded of Jerry Garcia saying something like the Grateful Dead didn't want to be the best at what they did, they wanted to be the only ones doing what they did.
This album is what Alice hears when she thinks about Wonderland.
Grew on me and I was in love by the end
Dreamy, etheral etc. slightly dull but I liked it nevertheless
Album was very enjoyable on my walk. Although I doubt it'd ever make it onto the car ride playlist, I liked it.
Never heard any shoegaze outside of my bloody valentine before. Wasn't sure what to expect, it doesn't really sound like MBV to me. I enjoyed a lot of it though, feels a bit ahead of its time for 1984. Hard to describe it, it was quite light and breezy in some places and then dark and heavy in others, singing sounded like Kate Bush. Reminded me of bits of more modern indie/pop in places but mostly quite unique. Sounds a bit raw, hope their big album comes up on the list so I can properly judge. 3.5.
Enjoyed Heaven Or Las Vegas, enjoyed this. I hereby appoint Cocteau Twins as my official suppliers of enchanted forest pixie music.
Pues muy bonito. Un poco de voz de locas, pero bonico.
4.0
Pues muy bonito. Un poco de voz de locas, pero bonico.
Ethereal and lovely
I think my experience of the Coteau Twins is Pearly Dewdrops Drop and that's about it. This album was of the same era and was pretty much as I expected it would be. Lots of ethereal singing and atmospheric music that never got dull but wasn't enough for a full five stars.
Estilo un poco inclasificable de música. Voz sensual y cálida para temas mezcla de pop-rock-instrumental y experimental. Suenan bien algunos temas
dreamy dreamy alien steamy creamy, ayoooooo
4.5
Over mid tier men ja
Quite like it
"Treasure" by Cocteau Twins is a dreamy and ethereal album that stands as a hallmark of the band's signature shoegaze and dream pop sound. Released in 1984, it's a journey into a sonic landscape of otherworldly beauty. Tracks like "Lorelei" and "Ivo" showcase Elizabeth Fraser's enchanting vocals and the band's lush, reverb-drenched instrumentation. The album's production creates an immersive and atmospheric experience, transporting listeners to a realm of sonic enchantment. "Treasure" remains a pinnacle of the shoegaze genre, an album that encapsulates Cocteau Twins' ability to create music that's both captivating and otherworldly, even if its unique style might not resonate with every listener.
Pretty good album
floated along nicely
Bewitching, magical. There was really nothing like this and this is the definitive of this sound.
Really surprised this... certainly didn't realize that most of this was vocalizing instead of understandable lyrics. The sound is pretty unique and evocative. It has a haunting ethereal quality that is very cool. Greatly enjoyed.
Wow that was a good album. Easy to listen too with lots of subtleties and great vocals.
I enjoy this album, but it's not on the same level as Heaven or Las Vegas for me. It has a great overall sound and mood, but some of the songs aren't particularly memorable. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is as fantastic as ever though. HOWEVER, that album cover is hideous.
This album feels like something I will like even more over time. The dreamy ethereal pop of the Cocteau Twins has been incorporated into so much modern pop that this album sounds like it could have been released in the past few years. I especially enjoyed the repetition and successive building as the songs developed. The melodies are also top notch, I will definitely add this to my list of albums to listen to again.
