Reviews (page 6 of 14)
a fine album from the boys from liverpool. a psychedelic journey brought to us by the fictitious sergeant pepper and his band. every single track on this album is listenable, a feat not often accomplished on this album challenge. there’s a reason that this album is often listed as one of the greatest albums of all time, as it is magical from the first moment until the conclusion. highlights: “with a little help from my friends” “fixing a hole” “being for the benefit of mr. kite!” “when i’m sixty-four”
This album is something so personal to me. nostalgia bias bc i grew up with it but just like holy fucking wow. Potentially the best closing track of all time. so fun, still sounds fresh today, and i absolutely enjoyed the show top 3 - a day in the life, lucy in the sky with diamonds, she’s leaving home
My favorite Beatles album!! There's not enough good things I can say about this record. The deep cuts, the flow, the depth of the lyrics, the drug influence ... it's all there ripe in the 67'. It's just brilliant.
Grew up listening to this era of Beatles so this album had a major influence on my musical taste.
one of my favourite albums ever
The beginning of so many things to come. Arguably one of the most influential albums of all time.
what a great album, it's fun to listen to with plenty of poppy songs but also a serious artistic album at the same time. I was surprised by how light the instruments really are on some of the songs. I love this album. Reminds me of Dad.
Could it be the first 5? Am I rating things based on nostalgia vs. quality? Maybe.
Beatles!! If you don’t like or appreciate the Beatles, you can get the fuck out.

One really great album with one of the greatest band there ever been.
One of the greats, if not the greatest
Great album, I always skip she's leaving home though as for some reason makes me deeply uncomfortable. The absolute insanity of A day in the life is just marvellous.
11/10. The indian in me is creaming. Love Within you without you
Obviously 5 stars!
Ha! Good one. I've heard this album many many times before. I guess I'll give it another listen ;) Legendary album.
Brilliant!
It’s either this or abbey road for my favourite Beatles. I know, it gets a bit of snark. But any album that includes’A day in the life’ is instantly five stars. The opening track. Wow. The closing track. Wow. The hidden track. Wow. Lennon at his diminished best. Not a lot of songs but those he does do - wow. McCartney at his best. Wow. George decides to master Carnatic music. As you do. Wow. There’s a reason this was a cultural phenomenon. 65000009 stars.
Really? It’s like having to rate The Bible. I was 16-years-old when it was released. It was a few years before I owned a copy but I managed to record most of it from the radio onto reel-to-reel tape. That is, all except for A Day In The Life, which I’m pretty sure was banned from Sydney radio stations because of the drug references. So It was a few years before I heard what was the most revolutionary track on the record. It’s never been my favourite Beatles album, but I’ve given it at least half-a-dozen spins in the last few daze & never stopped singing along to it. Fave tracks? Within You Without You rates highly. As does A Day In The Life. With A Little Help From My Friends is easily the best song they ever gave Ringo to sing lead on (& was followed closely by Joe Cocker’s great cover version & performance of it at Woodstock). Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Lovely Rita & She’s Leaving Home are all classics. And if you can tolerate When I’m Sixty-Four (and I appear to be able to), there's nothing wrong with the rest of the album. My favourite moment is when John sings : “And Mr H will demonstrate Ten summersets he’ll undertake On solid ground”. For thirty years I thought he might have mistakenly sung “summersets” instead of “somersaults” & just let it go. Then when Volume 2 of The Beatles Anthology was released in 1996, it included an early take of the song, on which he sings ”summersets”. Just John being a smartarse. Anyway, I was inspired to go through a large pile of magazines & newspapers that I’d put aside because the issues had focussed on the greatest albums of all-time. Because from the time of its release Sgt Peppers was often touted as being just that. And here’s what I came up with, in chronological order : Time Magazine (26/12/69) : One of the Top Ten Popular LP’s of the 60’s; Daily Mirror (May 1981) : #4 in 2MMM’s Election 105 as voted for by 30,000 fans (beaten by Dark Side Of The Moon, Born To Run & Led ZeppelinIV); NME (30/11/85) : Did Not Make It into NME’s Top 100 of all time as voted for by NME staff (Revolver was #11; The White Album was #33; Hard Day’s Night was #74; Rubber Soul was #98). (The Top 3 were What’sGoing On; Astral Weeks & Highway 61 Revisited) Massive Magazine (Feb 2000) : #6 in The Hottest 100 Albums Of All Time as voted for by readers (beaten by OK Compurer, Nevermind, Grace, The White Album & Stone Roses); Mojo Magazine (August 2000): The 100 Greatest Songs Of All Time as voted for by “the world’s finest songwriters” included 7 Beatles songs, but none from Sgt Peppers. The Beatles songs were In My Life(#1); Here, There & Everywhere (#4); Yesterday(#11); Something(#14); Eleanor Rigby(#19); Hey Jude(#29). &Let It Be (#60). In a sidebar they asked Paul McCartney to name his 10 Favourite songs (in no order)& he included A Day In The Life from Sgt Peppers (the other Beatles songs were Help!, Here, There & Everywhere & Something). Uncut Magazine (July 2001): The Beatles - Their 50 Greatest Songs as voted for by “an all-star panel” of mainly musicians : A Day In The Life topped the poll & Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds came in at #37. FHM Magazine (2004) : 100 Essential Albums You Must Own - not sure how it was assembled but it didn’t make it. The White Album was #6 & Revolver #29. The SMH (6/7/2004) : An article by Richard Jinman included a list of the Top 5 Albums of the 60’s (in no particular order) - Did not make this list, but Revolver did. Mojo Magazine (June 2007) : 100 Records That Changed The World as voted for by musicians (included albums & Singles). Came in at #16. The other Beatles’ items were I Want To Hold Your Hand at #2 & Revolver at #40. Rolling Stone Magazine (2010) : Special Collectors Edition - The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs. There were 7 off Sgt Peppers : A Day In The Life(#1); Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds(#19); Sgt Peppers etc.(#60); With A Little Help etc.(#61); She’s Leaving Home(#82) & Within You Without You(#96). On a sidebar they asked McCartney to list his favourite Beatles songs & he listed 6, including She’s Leaving Home. They also included a list of Lennon’s 5 favourites & it included Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite. The SMH(12/12/16) aricle by Rob Easdown reporting that Bowers & Wilkins, the premium hi-fi brand, to celebrate their 50th birthday, put together a list of the 50 albums that its”sound engineers, staff & hangers-on believe are the best ever put down”. Ironically it came in at #9. Future Bookazine - 100 Greatest Albums You Should Own On Vinyl(2017): In no particular order, Sgt Peppers is the only Beatles album on the list.
As any child who grew up in the 1970s, the Beatles were part of the cultural backdrop. Their songs were everywhere; the radio, bad covers on TV variety shows, school song books, everywhere. When I was in late primary school, one of my friends used to bring in a portable tape player, and we would spend lunchtimes listening to the red and blue compilations on cassette over and over again. I was around 16 at the 20th anniversary of Sgt Pepper's release when I started listening to rock music in earnest. I didn't own a lot of records, but bought a copy of Sgt Peppers on the back of the media attention (probably from a discount bin at the Ashfield Kmart). This was the album that Rolling Stone crowned the greatest rock album of all time. And yeah, it is pretty good. I listened to it a lot, and it was the first Beatles album that I became intimately familiar with. I read a lot about it, and I swallowed all of the received wisdom; first concept album, established rock as a credible art form, first album with lyrics printed on the sleeve, innovative use of studio as instrument, high point of their work as a unified band, etc etc. All true(ish) and I don't intend to relitigate any of that. As time went on, I have read more and more about the Beatles and their place in musical history, and become familiar with more of their catalogue. Sgt Peppers doesn't even crack my Top Five Favourite Beatles' Albums List any more (as measured by propensity to put them on the turntable). They were so culturally ubiquitous by this stage that anything they did became, by default, the blueprint for 'how things should be done', even if one of those things were 'break the musical rules'. Some have even made the argument that their studio mastery created an authenticity backlash, that bands had to prove that they could 'do it live'. But you can't deny the huge shadow this album casts over everything that has followed. I'm not sure the Beatles themselves could even deal with its outsized reputation. At the end of the day, to quote Scroobius Pip, "the Beatles? just a band". It's hard, really hard, to hear this record on its own terms. When I think about it, I hadn't listened to the record all the way through in over a decade until today. I cued it up and pressed play, expecting it to be a bit tired, a bit overplayed. Maybe it helps that I have rested my ears for a long time, but it all came flooding back. This is a really great listen, and it still sounds pretty fresh. There is an energy of ideas and it's not over-polished. It is barely a concept album (that idea really only lasts for two songs and the cover art), which is a good thing because I generally find concept albums annoying and over-complicated. There are some cracking tunes, a million ideas, some tasty playing and singing, and it all ends with "A Day In The Life". Scott Plagenhoef in Pitchfork insightfully commented "Sgt. Pepper’s, possibly as a corrective to the hushed tones with which it’s been received for decades, has slipped in estimation behind a few of the band’s other records, but it’s easy to hear how it achieved that reputation in the first place." And I think that's where I had landed. I was going to give it four stars, because it's not my favourite Beatles album, but who am I kidding? It's Sgt Fucking Peppers. In what world is this not a five star album?
From an influential standpoint it doesn’t get larger than this. Perfect score in that regard. In terms of how much I enjoy listening in 2024, still pretty high. I’ve heard these songs so many times growing up that it’s hard to rate fairly when you know exactly how every song goes. Even the weaker songs I don’t listen to as much like fixing a hole, Mr kite, within you without you, and good morning all add something different to the album. It’s amazing how eclectic the songs are yet they all feel like they belong on this album. But again I don’t know if that’s just because I’ve listened so many times. Also can’t forget to add that arguably my favorite song ever in a day in the life finishes the album. Rating: 4.9
Some of the best music made ever. The intro is so perfect; it’s especially amazing as it leads into a little help from my friend, one of rings star’s best vocal performances. That song is one of the beatles best. Lucy In the Sky has some almost jarring moments that amaze it amazing, and the next song, getting better, sounds like it is not from this world. I could continue talking about how amazing every song is, but you get the picture. 5/5, 10/10, 100/100, perfect album
Sgt Peppers, A Little Help, Lucy in the Sky, Getting Better, Sixty Four, Lively Rita, A Day In The Life, etc. Need I say more?
I mean.
I’m not sure what to say about this, except brilliant. It’s brilliant.
If this challenge was only the 10 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die, it would surely still include Sgt. Pepper. It's often credited with legitimizing popular music as a true art form. It's perhaps the first example of a band adopting alternate personas to free themselves creatively (undoubtedly, Bowie took note). It's arguably the creative peak of one of the most important bands in living memory. It's an eclectic tapestry, refusing to be bound by the strict confines of live performance and allowing the band to take full control of the studio environment. It's a defining statement about 60s youth culture, including the obsession with drugs, mysticism, and love. Though there are stand out tracks, the album is definitely intended to be experienced as a whole. Because of that, it also helped cement of the idea of an album being a whole idea, rather than a collection of individual songs (sometimes hobbled together by a marketing team). The artwork is densely layered with intellectual and historical icons, unually for a pop album. In short, this is simply one of the most significant albums of all time. Those who weren't alive at the time (like myself) might mistakenly only hear oldies here. But taken in context and as a whole album, it was truly revolutionary.
Before the albums became available in Youtube, the beatles were just a '60s boy band singing cute pop songs with their bell-sounding guitars and impeccable harmonies. The live performances in particular are always packed with screaming girls in the background, so loud it drowns out the music. Then the albums became available. It all changed. "Sgt. Peppers" and "Abbey Road" made me experience what Beatles fans in the '60s probably experienced back then. They blew my mind, and made it open to all the possibilities in music. I might even say I won't be here treading the list if it wasn't for that.
Aaaahmazing! So much creativity in one album!
One of the Best!
- this album was ahead of its time - insane variety of sounds - really shows off the talent of this group
Started becoming obsessed with The Beatles when I was in middle school. Probably a bit weird for a kid who was in middle school in the early 90s. But there you have it. This was one of the first CDs I ever bought with my own money. It blew me away the first time I heard it. It's been played out since, but I still give it a listen from time to time. And I still love it.
Cutting edge for its time with some truly great unforgettable tracks.
Big dog. One of those ones that was just inevitable, though funny that we didn't get this until 925 albums into the list. Also funny that yesterday's album, Moby Grape's self-titled, is also from 1967 and the gulf of creativity couldn't be wider. This is another pinnacle for the Beatles. It followed Revolver, which is still my favorite, but they went for this concept album style, which wasn't necessarily the first but it was definitely a landmark for pop/rock artists to do so. As such, it's very consistent. Not as high of highs as Revolver to me, but almost every song is enjoyable (save for a couple of duds). The opening three tracks is a perfect sequence too. Has to be five stars, no way around it. I'd still rank Revolver higher, but for one band to make both of these is pretty insane. Favorite tracks: I'm keeping all but two, but my favorites are Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, With a Little Help from My Friends, Sgt. Pepper's (Intro), She's Leaving Home, A Day in the Life, Mr. Kite. Album art: Iconic, classic. Lots of great details here - the band is here twice, and I love how weird they look on the left in black (especially Ringo). Who else can I see? Edgar Allen Poe, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Karl Marx, quite the rogue's gallery. Love the bright-colored fits, the drum, the rose garden, it's a spectacular cover. 5/5
I think this album got me into the Beatles so it's a 5 off the bat. Can see how Pet Sounds influenced it, if i'm going to engage in comparing the two.
This is the album that got me into collecting collectible records. Came across an original press of this at a local record store when I was about 16, maybe 17, and was hooked on the history.
This has previously been seen as one of the greatest albums ever written. I do agree it’s a bit overrated in that context, it’s not even the Beatles greatest album in my opinion. But it’s arguably one of the most important albums ever written. For that reason I still consider this a masterpiece. It’s flows so well and some absolute stand out songs on their own too. Plus it finishes with a day in the life. Another 5 star album for the Fab Four.
The Beatles were one of the most influential bands in modern music, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band is one (at least arguably) of their best - most famous - most revered - albums. With their work, it is impossible to use enough superlatives. This is one of the most important albums of modern music. Every song has left a mark on modern culture - these are songs that transcended popular music and became part of our cultural fabric, in movie and television soundtrack and in the unfathomable range of musicians that take their inspiration from the Fab Four.
I mean, it's Sgt Peppers.
Beatls are awesome. A lot of kids to this album and all the new tech applied to this - so it has a place I history. As I listen to it now (and grew up when it wa out - and the Beatles are still playing) it has some fiun and artistry. I can hear the beginnings of changes to the band yet to come... enjoy !!
What can you say really that hasn't been said. Once of, if not the best albums end to end of all time.
Classic but still great, groundbreaking.
Classic for a reason. Bit goofy tho
If I was judging it purely on the music I think this would be an easy 4. Songs like a day in the life are just masterpieces. I don't usually give anything extra for how 'influential' an album was but in this case I feel like you kind of have to. 5/5.
There is a reason that this album is the overall #1 rated album on the 1001albums project. And why it was #1 on the original editions of Rolling Stones list of Top 500 albums of all time. It is probably the most iconic rock album of all time. And that's because it is brilliant. If you don't know it, you should. If you don't like it, you should. One of the truly "important" albums. Actually not my favorite Beatles album, but Top 3. And absolutely a 5/5
Perfect album front to back. All songs are bangers and its influence is beyond comprehension. 5/5
How can I not like this absolute beast of an album. So interesting and memorable, even today after a lifetime of exposure, it still feels fresh. Superb.
Not much to say about this one, have heard many times before and I'm glad to listen to it again! Not my favourite beatles album but has my favourite beatles song and is overall a great listen! Definite 5.
I love how this is such a complete album and we’re all invited to the circus. There are so many great tracks, it’s fun and creative and trippy and insightful and just a delightfully good time.
Pretty awesome album
what to say? masterpiece
One of the best Albums of all time, truely a masterpiece 10/10
classic first 4 songs on an album
Definitely deserves being on the list!
Some of it is silly but it just works doesn’t it?
One of the best albums ever and this is not an exaggeration. Really weirded out by the guy from 88 that had never heard a Beatles song before
Spectacular. Varied. Good storytelling. Orchestral integration. One of my favorite albums!
The more you listen, really listen, the more you can hear and ultimately appreciate the artistry that went into creating a timeless record. They pushed the limits of their tools to make something truly special.
Never Dull. Never sour. Never enough.
Fantastic album all around that deserves all the praise, list rankings, influence, and respect. Beatles continue down the darker path since their departure from bubblegum pop on this album. They step into their alter-ego band and let the creativity flow. It must have sent the world in a Wonka frenzy when it dropped. People must have flown to the record stores and snatched this album up. It may not actually hold a golden ticket but it is a gold standard album. Still intriguing and will captivate audiences forever I think...
What more can you say about The Beatles? They are iconic for so many reasons and Sgt. Pepper might be their absolute peak. This album deserves all the praise and more. It deserves to be near the top of every list and I'm sure there's an argument that it's the best album ever written. It has everything you want with some poppy hits and some experimental tracks that go outside the box that work really well. A multitude of the songs remain all time classics. This album holds up unbelievably well nearly 60 years later. Credit to all involved and their well deserved legacy. 4.70 stars
Fuck yeah, I love this album. Some of my best times with my friends with this album on acid :)
A BANGER, FOREVER AND ALWAYS
As someone who previously spoke about The Beatles as if it were my job to say how “overrated” they were, I can’t deny how enamored I am every time I end up hearing one of their records for the first time. A band simply doesn’t become this big just because. And I don’t think people should try to make the argument that they are bad. At this point, there is no reason to. The last time I was in this position, I spoke ad nauseam about Abbey Road. Possibly still the longest review I have ever written. And now I am presented with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. If Revolver exists to highlight the tipping point of the band, this fully flips the iceberg. We are officially on the cusp of the deep end. As with all of their releases post 1965, they continued to push boundaries in ways that have never been matched by another band. And especially with this album, psychedelic music was never the same. And I mean all forms of it. I don’t think you could pay someone to find a piece of psychedelic infused music that hasn’t been touched by this album, or influenced by other music that was influenced by this. It’s a domino effect that flipped a genre on its head and spun it around a few dozen times. This album should get every bit of praise it has received. It’s wholeheartedly deserved. You may be missing the point if you think this strays too far from what the Fab Four should sound like. This is everything they were meant to be and more, and the start of a run that would alter music as we know it. This records capacity to be lighthearted and silly, while still being so damn well written and composed is incredible. These arrangements are next level, and easily on par with what was seen on Revolver. And they bring more new ideas to the table that just keep elevating this to the next level. Plus, A Day in the Life is debatably the best song they ever wrote. Yeah, I said it. The rising symphonic transition into the tempo change straightens you out, and makes me feel like I should be wearing a suit and tie. I think this could be considered the most important album they ever made. From a cultural, social, musical and physical perspective, this is synonymous in far too many ways to count. Rating: 9/10
Classic
Execução suprema de como o rock psicodélico pode sintetizar a sua força de definir o pop. Sendo que a última música, "A Day in the Life", é o paradigma da perfeição desta realização.
This album is iconic, and not in a Gen Z use of "iconic" way, but legitimately a milestone in rock and roll history. Numerous all-time classics on this album mixed in with (although some of them not for me) some experimental jams tell a very interesting story. There were even a few tracks I hadn't heard before that are real earworms that will make their way onto my Beatles playlist going forward like "Lovely Rita", "She's Leaving Home", and "Fixing A Hole". 9/10
This album helped me get by With a Little Help From My Friends and now things are Getting Better.
It's wild that this was my first time actually listening to this album, considering it's reputation as "the best album of all time". I don't know if I'd go that far in a world where Hatebreed's "Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire" exists, but this was pretty fantastic front to back. Turns out I don't hate all whimsical music!
Hell yes, I love it when I own my record of the day on vinyl! Popping in on right now.
One of my favorite Beatles album that also had my least favorite song of theirs. Still, can’t beat She’s Leaving Home, When I’m Sixty-Four, and With a Little Help from My Friends. Also was the first Beatles album I ever listened to!
after taking hallucinogens shortly after expressing dissatisfaction with their previous discography, the beatles would go on a crazy musical journey like no other. this album is a delightful trip from beginning to end. happy, sad, dreamy, fucking nightmare inducing. all of these and more are packed in this undeniably iconic beatles album. truly the epitome of honest and true psychedelia that'll stand the test of time.
A personal favorite. I love the "continuous track" feel of the album.
The first time i listen to this album, it was during a car ride to New York with my family and i was already a big Beatles fan, but then i ear this album one shot, who work as a whole and i was simply blown away. This is widely consider as The best album ever made, the one with the greatest influence on music, on society and the creatiuve peak of the fab four. This album is the crown jewel of 1967 (the best musical year of all time) realease arounf the middle of the year. Before even listen to it, we have to look at it, because this colourfull album artowrk is also probably one of the best (The Best i think) album cover of all times. So much details, colours, references, just showing the musical influences of the Beatles, or in this case the Sgt peppers lonely hearts club band. We could see Aleister Crowley, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Edgar Allan Poe, Marlene Dietrich, Karl Marx, the 1964 Beatles and so much more. The little doll at the right is also interitweing as it show a message to the Rollings Stones (welcome the Rollings Stones). All of this resulted in the most beautifull album artwork of all times, in itself is an art piece. The album is also known for its various inovation in rock/pop music, as the Beatles drew musical inspiration from the undeground psychedelic scene, musical hall and avant-garde. But also contemporary music act such as the Beachs Boys album Pets sounds, or The Doors, and also non musical influences such as drugs like LSD and pot wich are really inseparable from the album. An George bring a lot from oriental music, to the point of wrtitng a whole song in indian music. The reccording procces on its own is something special, brining so much inovation, new instruments, and technique, but really the Beatles song engernieer and producer gave their 200% on this album and deserve more recognition for this thing. Then the album is consider as one of the first art rock/ concept album of all time, the concept mainly inspired by Mccartney is that the band no longer exist and that they just became another band the Sgt peppers lonely hearts club band (the name is onspired by some american band name like big brother and the holding company). The title track and the openning of the album is the eponymne Sgt peppers lonely herats club band, a song that break the fourth wall with the audience, introduing the band and their leader Billy Shears,. The song is harder than most beatles song, with a powerfull guitar riff, orchestra, french horn and crowd sounds. Simply great. Then Billy Shears (ringo Starr ) sing the "first song" Witha little help from my friends, one of the best song by Ringo in The Beatles, John and Paul ad written it for him, and its a response song between Ringo and the three other guys with a message for hapiness and friendship. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD), even tho this theory is widely accept it was always denied by John and i honnestly belived him, but when you listen to the lyrics its hard to say that this as no psychedelic influences, the song (inspired by a drawing that julian lennon did) could also being a wrierd dream like in alice in wonderland or a LSD trip. Even tho the title is not a reference to LSD the lyrics and the musicality of the song clearly are and definitly make the most iconic song of the album. Getting better the first Paul's Leading vocals on the album, is a pretty normal song, optimistic and happy feeling. The song also have a reference to John bad habbit with womens (i used to be cruel to my woman) an ackoledgement of his actions. Overall its a good song, fit perflectly well in the album I simply adore Fixing a Hole, the music is very baroque influenced, with psychedelic lyrics about mind, wondering and creativity. Mcartney said this is a Ode to Pot (and not heroin as some might say), and was written under the influence of acid, and is simply perferct for the album. She's leaving home is a exemple of the Beatles having more lyricaly complex songs, not just about love and girls but this time about a teenage runaway, alienation, loneliness. The orchestra is just beautifull on the song, with the violons, viola, piano and of course Lennon's backing vocals haromy add that little thing that make it wonderfull. If the Beatles make psychedelic circus music, its off course gonna be a incredible song, from the verses ot the chorus and the musical bridge the song is genius. The lyrics describe an old fashioned circus show, inspired by a poster of a circus from the 19th century. Being the benefit of mr Kite is using a lot of instruments that all make sense and working to push the song higher. Within or Whitout you really was impactfull for me the first time i ear it, i was living it and i had a revelation cause i was enjoying it so much. This song is the soul of the album, Harisson nail it so much its definitly one of its best song, a perfect introduction to oriental music for the west audience. The profoundly introspective and spiritual lyrics with the music make us feel like in a dream or a hindu temple lost in the jungle its imposible to not being inspired by this song agaisnt materialism and for inner peace. The way the music is made just transend our mind, the traditional indian instruments, the structures and the sitar solo add in more of introspection and magnificence to it. Its a totaly different ambience with when i'm sixty for, with this time a Vaudeville influence almost a cabaret song, Mccartney had written it when he was 14 apparently. A proof that they could do anything and it just fit in poerfeclty with the album, the lyrics are about growing old with a very affectionate look at it. Lovely Rita is a meter maid that have give a ticket to Paul and he decide to accept it an wrote a song about her, another musical hall approch with very psychedelic musicly too. The song is kinda overlook but for me is one of the best in the album, like the title the song is just lovely and joyfull. Good Moring Good Morning is the only thing i dislike in the album, it just a pretty bad song (for this album standard), even John dislike it. Then the "closer" Sgt peppers pt 2, with another hard guitar riff, with the band saying goodbye to the audience and its a perfect to close the album. Exepct that this is not the real closer, immidiatly after like an encore, a accousitc guitar play and a piano embark and one of the most beautiufull song ever made start. The lyrics are about john who read a journal, and he read that his friend (Tara Browne) have died in a car accident, and he make a promotion for a movie he made (How i won the war). Then a bridge that is complytely another song by Paul is just about a ugy who smoke pot, before that the i'd love to turn you one is probaly another refrence to drugs. The other part of the John song talk about the many hole in the roads of britan, so much that it could fit the royal albert hall (that the Beatles play a coupple years ago). But this song is not just brilliant for the lyrics, the music is made from heaven, the song have an orchestra creshendo that they play as hard as they can until the peak and then the finale, is complexe but this is pure genius. Then the song close with an dog whistle and a backwards message, anyway the song is consider one of the best by the Beatles, the most magestic and the most grandiose and i agree. This album could have been even better, because Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were suposed to be included on the album, but they were release as single, those song are some of the best ever made by the band, so just image what this album could have been. Saying that this album is ahead of its time is an understatement, i can't describe it all in just a few words but from the look, the production, the instruments and the spirit everythings is great, perfect and have make sense. To finnish, they is so much more to say, but i dont want to get lost, so this album have change music for the best, was a huge commerical success (32 millions sales), have revolutionalize the way of making music and its one the most important album in my life. This album should not even be on this list because it so obvious how good it is, this is it, the king of all albums and the Jewel of The Beatles musical crown.
What can possibly be said? This is one of the hallmarks of 20th-centry art – any genre or media or discipline – and an all-time high-water mark or pop music ("full cultural legitimisation for pop music" is spot on). Edifying, elevating and vastly entertaining, SPLHCB merits every critical acclaim and commercial milestone it has earned.
Every time I listen to this, I think it's going to grow off me, but the opposite happens. This shit's magical, and I don't even consider myself to be a Beatles fan (Abbey Road is a 3/5 album, yawn). Well done, Ringo and the other guys! You truly rolled the god blunt on this one.
So many sing alongs, love it
C'mon
One historic album
Weird and Trippy, Just like The Beatles intended.
The Beatles were my first excursion into rock and roll. My mom raised me on them along with R&B, Motown, and a sprinkling of other rock recordings. It was when I heard the Beatles for the first time that I began to be really hooked on music. As a kid, I listened primarily to the "Fab Four" stuff. But when I first heard this album, I knew the possibilities that music provides. That being said, I would say this album is not my favorite in the catalog, preferring "Revolver" and "Abbey Road". But no one can deny the impact that this record has had on popular music. I still love to listen to it every time.
Beatles were great!
Just excellent. Zany and catchy.
The start of the boys' psychedelic journey. Amazing opening 3 songs and A Day in the Life is an incredible closer. Heat. Get in, Lads.
Brilliant, so, so fresh at the time, still a fantastic explosion of musical creativity.
First Beatles album on the list for me! Well, second, if you consider the Lennon one. Delightfully groovy and a perfect, gentle strike of optimism for the weary heart.
amazing. historic. fun
Huge 5, top 3 beatles albums if not number 1, always listenable 24/7
I'm sure many will agree that this is one of those essential albums for all of humankind. It's one of the best-selling albums of all time and it's taught in music history classes of varying levels for good reason (shout out to the Foundations of Rock course I took freshman year of college). It transcends rock and pop. I've always appreciated the sheer variety of sounds & instruments across the album's 39 minutes too. Among everything else, you've got: glockenspiels, sitars, tablas, tambourines, and even comb-and-paper kazoos! Plus it all ends on an absolute high note (erm, a long E-major chord to be specific) with "A Day In The Life", really showcasing the collective effort of each one of the Beatles. I hate to be hyperbolic, but it really is a melding of musical greatness rolled up into 13 songs. I'm not a massive Beatles fanboy either, yet this album always commands my attention whenever I come across it.
🐐🏆
5-
Rating this one feels like cheating since it's perfection.
An all-time great album. Full of wonderful, creative and excellent songs. Have listened before and will listen again - many times.
one ear at a time it seems. in other news - sgt. peppers lonely heart club band was a funky fresh intro to an album. 8.5/10 - with a little help from my friends is positively smashing 🧐 9/10 - lucy in the sky with diamonds was fire, loved it, also it was a vibe for driving through spain 10/10 - getting better was great too (ignore that one line about beating his wife) 9/10 - fixing a hole was good but kinda unremarkable compared to the other songs on the album 8/10 - shes leaving home was great storytelling and a good song without the storyness of it 8.5/10 - being for the benefit of Mr, Kite! was kind of morose. not necessarily in a bad way, just different to the reat of the album. and the circus music was extra fun. 8.5/10 - within without you was nice and calm and whatnot 9/10 - when im sixty four gave me a bad feeling but i dont know why but its still good. 7.5/10 - lovely rita 8/10 - good morning was kind of baffling with the animal sounds at the end 8/10 - sgt pepper’s lonely hearts club band- repise was better that the first one and annoyingly short 9/10 - a day in the life was 9/10 easily. overall the album was like 9.5/10, wo give an average of something like 8/10 but it felt more like a 9/10 bc the better songs were longer than the worse ones. so like 5/5 ⭐️
I mean it’s a classic. What more is there to say. Every track is yummy. I’d have to say my favs are Lucy in the sky with diamonds, the first title track and getting better. A day in the life is a great song but I don’t personally feel the connection with it as much as others do. Idk if I’ll give it a four of a five. I’ll see how generous I’m feeling in the morning
Love this album
I think I listened to this album in its entirety in February of this year, but was already familiar with some of the songs ("With a Little Help...", "Lucy in the Sky...", "Getting Better") from my childhood. After that initial listen through, I fell in love with "She's Leaving Home", its soaring melody magical and memorable to the ears, and was reminded why my dad loves "A Day In The Life" so much, especially with that piano chord at the end. This time listening to it, I was able to hear so much more and appreciate what this album had and still continues to offer. I realized that I love "Fixing a Hole", "Lovely Rita", and "When I'm Sixty Four", even though I wouldn't be surprised to learn that people are not the biggest fan of that song. The difference between me and the haters is that I'm not living a miserable existence!! Anyways, moving on to la pièce de résistance: "A Day In The Life". Whenever I listen to it, no matter how many times I do, I still find my breath trapped in my throat for that brief moment of respite between the cacophony and the following crashing wave of resolution that feels like it could accompany the end of the world. (Dramatic much? Maybe so, but what I do know is that this album is absolutely fantastic.)
Stone cold classic. I've been listening to it for several decades and it rewards you for familiarity. Makes me wonder about some of these albums that I didn't like the first run through. Probably not going to pursue that thought too far.
Not my top Beatles album, but still an all time classic. Some of my favorites are the lesser known songs like Fixing a Hole, She’s Leaving Home and When I’m Sixty-Four. Within You Without You might be the best Harrison track. Absolutely essential.
One of my all time favorites. I will never forget the first time I heard A Day In The Life on 8 track that I got from Columbia House.
I think this is my favourite album ever. As a bonus I didn’t know it was available in stereo until my mid 20’s. I’d only ever heard the mono release.
The best. Literally expanded the very idea not only of what a music album could be, but of what pop-music could be. It inspired people to believe that their sound was limited only by the scope of their imagination. The richness and variation of western music from the 70s through today is a testament to that inspiration.
actually still a great album, apart from its historical significance... some great songs (day in the life, lucy in the sky, the benefit of mr kite,...). Some remind me of Syd Barrett (and his period in PF), like 'when i'm sixty-four, fixing a hole, good morning,...) But you really need to listen to it from the perspective of the time it came out, to fully understand the impact it had. Young people now are used to all the effects and overdubs and sampling, but back then it was revolutionary. That's why it receives a solid 5 from me
I mean…
Great classic album! If you really want to experience this album in the best way possible, I’d recommend listening to it with earbuds or headphones. They used a lot of state of the art production techniques. I’ve even seen sources go as far as say this was one of the essential albums that helped lead to the emergence of progressive rock. Either way this album was ahead of its time in a lot of ways.
the best album of the Beatles! Masterpiece!
Hey do you guys know about this band? Pretty good stuff
I'm rating this a 5 just to offset all the ones who rated it a one. You're just being delusional.
From the album artwork to the music, this album is colorful. To me it feels like a dream where you are taken to different scenarios, you don’t know what is happening. Some of it’s happy, some sad, some just plain weird, but it’s a fun trip to go on and as everyone says about this album, the Beatles were definitely on some kind of trip while writing most of it, but I love it. One of my favorite songs of all time is “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Other favorites: Lucy in the Sky Getting Better When I’m Sixty Four After doing some after listening research, I am just figuring out that “Strawberry Fields Forever” was meant to be a part of this album, but the studio made them release a double LP (with Penny Lane) first and the two singles were never added. (I guess the modern day version of that is selling singles online. Makes it complicated releasing an intro single and making money with only physical records.) But, the whole album sounds better when you listen to the LP along with it!
Definition of a classic. This is the very first classic rock album I got into after digging up my aunt’s old copy from my mom’s box of old records in high school. I still have it. Every song is great and they fit so well together as an album despite jumping between pop, psychedelic rock, ballads, and unorthodox detours. It’s a masterpiece, what else can I say. Favorite songs: All of them
An old favorite. Listening is like visiting with an old friend :) Favorite songs: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds She’s Leaving Home A Day in the Life
This album makes me feel so good. The Beatles somehow pack so many good vibes into one album while still making it feel cohesive and uniquely theirs. Some types of good vibes in this album: - Just jamming’ out - Harmonize your heart out with the boys - Numb euphoria, a la zoning out - Frog and Toad simple pal vibes - Slow-mo sky diving carelessness - Gratefully reminiscing about the past Faves: Simply all of it
As a concept album, Sgt Pepper is an intriguing conceit. The Beatle’s performed and recorded an album as if they were a fictional band with an entirely new sound. Hey, I guess stringing platinum album after platinum album gets boring after a while. Sometimes you gotta spice up the marriage when things get stale. Right off the gate in the opener they dictate this move to you. The track starts with the fab four singing over some guitar chords, reminiscent of their classic sound. But as soon as they hit the line “So may I introduce to you The act you've known for all these years Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,” the sound of horn and string instruments come parading onto the track, guiding you to the new sound you will be listening for the rest of this records runtime. From there the Beatles take you on a journey musically. There are more of these orchestral numbers like With a Little Help from my Friends (the transition into that track is so seamless it’s unreal) mixed alongside some more experimental tracks. This journey continues up until the Sgt Pepper reprise where the fab four comes back over guitars again, almost as if to remind you that it was the Beatles this whole time, even asking if you’ve enjoyed the show. To me every Beatles album really is a whiplash of an experience. They will hit you with some profoundly great songs then transition to some silly little whimsical number, with nonsensical lyrics. Sgt Pepper is certainly them at their most whimsical as it can at times be as goofy as those colorful pastel uniforms they don on the album cover. But I was here for it and enjoyed the ride. 5 Fav Songs: Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band With A Little Help From My Friends Getting Better She’s Leaving Home A Day In The Life
Yea this album is really good. I love how The Beatles became mainstream as seemingly normal British boys who make catchy tunes only to reveal themselves as little freaks later on. I’ll end this review with a quote I found while researching this album from Paul McCartney: “We were fed up with being the Beatles. We really hated that fucking four little mop-top approach. We were not boys, we were men ... and thought of ourselves as artists rather than just performers.”
listening to full beatles albums has been an interesting adventure! i know a great many beatles songs but don't listen by full albums. listening to sgt. pepper has allowed me to fully grasp how entrenched in psychedelia the beatles were! they were so influential in the rock and pop arena as trailblazers, yet their later career was full of fun, different creativity. george harrison's "within you without you" encompasses this with the south asian elements and instruments creating some sort of hazy acid trip. the non-single songs, since they have a larger chance of being new to me, stand out--particularly the lyrics. "being for the benefit of mr. kite" is jaunty, contains a circus theme, and has such different lyrics. "fixing a hole" sounds like quite the literal song at first listen, but the concern of a wandering mind reveals the lyrics to be much more metaphorical. "she's leaving home" is already beautiful with the orchestra and the backing vocals provided by john lennon, but its lyrics put it over the top. with the non-single songs being so enjoyable, the beatles are in fine form on sgt. pepper.
What can I say about this album? It really deserves its accolades; it delivers all around, from lyrics to music to graphics. It is psychedelic in nature as one would except from The Beatles, but also true to the nature of The Beatles, it is forward-facing and goes beyond just typical psychedelic, dabbling in other areas not limited to but including world music, Vaudevillian soundscapes, and avant-garde. While not strictly a concept album, I do feel like this album has enough of a world built around the fictional Lonely Hearts Club Band that it loosely qualifies as a concept album. Not to mention, this album was another that was at the forefront of the counterculture movement, due to its topics and style. So much dedication, thought, and artistry went into this album that result in this expert craftsmanship, truly making it is a piece of art, and a fine piece of art at that.
I grew up with this album and can't say enough good things about it. Certainly innovative for it's time and showcases the amazing range of musical talent from The Beatles. I've never been a huge fan of "Within You Without You" but that's only relative to the stature of the rest of the album.
An album I am very familiar with and love. Not my favorite of theirs but still one of the greatest albums of all time. 5/5
One of the greats Easily one of the best albums ever When I'm 64, BANGERR
The middle of this album isn't 5 stars but the beginning and the end are enough to keep it there but it was close.
An Absolute classic I would argue this album has less fantastic songs thats other Beatles albums, but at the same time, it probably knits together better than most of their other records. If I had to pick the best songs on the record I'd probably go for A Day in the Life (obviously) and Lovely Rita. the sums of its parts come together ;), to make something incredible I could argue, but its a 5 lads
lol
One of the all time great albums!
Perfection!
It’s classic for a reason. Creativity abounds all the way through.
Best album they did. Don't really have to explain myself, it's brilliant and I like it a lot.
Likely THE greatest LP of all time. Most certainly the most complex of its time.
Oh, that's an easy 5. The first album where you can see the members developing their own thing but then play it as a band, forming the first concept album in a very intricate way. Production is flawless, and each track has its place, even though they are so different in style. I haven't heard Sgt. Pepper's in years, still most of the lyrics were present.
It's not the best Beatles album, but it's still a damn fine album
60's classic/psychedelic rock. One of the greatest, some consider it THE greatest, albums of the rock era. Maybe I'm just old but I feel that people consistently underestimate how far the Beatles moved the goalposts with this record. The amount of money and creative energy spent chasing them after this dropped is astonishing. Every song has a unique vibe, with different themes and instrumentation -- up tempo rockers like the title track and Lovely Rita, trippy experimentations like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Fixing A Hole, introspective thematic tunes like Getting Better and She's Leaving Home, and then A Day In The Life covering all the bases. All of them impeccably crafted, played, sung and produced. A masterpiece, 5 star sine qua non.
The Beatles = 5 stars
4.7/5 Best Track: A Day in the Life
I love The Beatles and have listened to this album countless times. It’s truly a work of art.
There is actually a lot of filler on this album.
Previously rated: Rubber Soul (5/5) With the Beatles (5/5) ********************************* I like using this fake band thing to frame this pseudo-concept album, even if it only ties into 3/13 tracks. There are two songs here I don't really care for. She's Leaving Home is too overproduced and boring sounding. And Within You Without You is just too...weird and un-Beatle like. I do like the version on the LOVE album that mixes it with Tomorrow Never Knows. If Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were held back for this album instead of released as a single, and replaced those two tracks, I think this would unquestionably be the best Beatles album of all time, and maybe best album period. I'm partial to Lovely Rita and Good Morning, Good Morning, and of course a Day in the Life. Oh, and Lucy in the Sky. Oh, and When I'm 64 and the reprise. Let's give this a 4.75.
Absolute classic. The Beatles at their best.
Classic Album
A lot of acid was involved, which takes the whole record to a whole new level
I mean I dont wanna give every Beatles album a 5 star but this one gets it
Superb
Fire album. Couple of real bangers like when I'm 64
It depends on the day which one of the last 6 studio albums is my all time favourite Beatles album. Very often it’s this!
yeah they were on drugs for this one. 5 stars
Wow. This is kinda weird to approach at this point in life. This is an album I have listened to over 1,000 times in the last 35 years. Not my favorite Beatles records, but still one that I love and think is very important. Hard to truly review because every song is colored with years of memories and has so much nostalgia attached to it. I’m trying to think what it was like being 15 and hearing this again for the first time and I think I’m just too far removed.
I can't give this less than 5. I want to. I want to find a reason that I'm not blown away by this album. I want to say that their ill advised detour into Eastern Mysticism is a disqualifying one; but damnit, this is a true masterpiece. Even "Good Morning" works in the context of the album, providing a day-in-the-life within the confines of the Lonely Hearts Club concert. This is followed by the real day in the life which is much less rewarding than the one imagined in the concert. And that ending. It's such an ambitious gamble and it pays off. So much has been written about it, but it bares repeating: this is one of the finest moments in pop music. But even in between the highs, you have some of the Beatles finest song writing. Paul's Granny shit has never sounded so good as the Beatles take a grand tour of British musical history and even venture into the future with Lennon's acid tinged fever dreams. "She's Leaving Home," still is my favorite, although "Lucy in the Sky" has grown in my estimation. I love this album. It's a success on every front. Song for song, I still prefer "Revolver," but this is as good as they say it is.
I don't know how to review this objectively.
The challenge with reviewing Sgt Pepper is it's a bit like trying to review 'air' or 'gravity' (the natural phenomena, not the French band or the Embrace song). It's just always been there keeping me alive. It almost doesn't matter that When I'm 64 is risible, or that WALHFMF is on here. When you have a record that's got Lovely Rita, A Day in the Life, She's Leaving Home and (IMHO) the incredible reprise of the title track all there, plus Good Morning, which really stood out on this listen, there isn't much more to say. it's wonderful, it's life-changing and it's magnificent. Then you add in the cover, the cultural impact and the sheer bravery, and you just can't mark it down.
Favourite tracks: sgt peppers lonely hearts club band; with a little help from my friends; Lucy in the sky with diamonds; getting better; lovely Rita; good morning good morning; sgt peppers lonely hearts club band (reprise); a day in the life; she's leaving home; fixing a hole
Knew most of the songs individually (huge Beatles fan) but it was a different experience hearing the album as a whole. I find this era of the Beatles experimental and fascinating - but am still partial to the boppy songs of their early beginnings.
One of the best ever!!!
Day 11 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) Sgt. Pepper's is my favourite Beatles album, and although my taste has gradually shifted from classic rock / pop, it remains beloved in my heart. I have a vintage UK vinyl record of Sgt. Pepper's from the 1970s. I've listened Sgt. Pepper's Remastered and Sgt. Pepper's Deluxe so many times that I know every note, word, and arrangement. Sgt. Pepper's pioneered rock music, whether with the brilliant Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, serene She's Leaving Home, or the ethereal A Day In The Life. There is arguably no "weak" song, and even the lesser-known tracks ("Good Morning, Good Morning") add more depth to the album. TL;DR: Sgt. Pepper's is the pinnacle of rock music, and you'd have to be blind, deaf, and even then foolish to not acknowledge its influence.
Entire album is a masterpiece. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds, With a Little Help From My Friends, Getting Better, and When I'm Sixty-four are some of my favorite Beatles songs. A Day In The Life is one of my favorite songs of all time. 20/10. No rating is high enough.
What can be said about probably the most critically acclaimed record of all time? It doesn’t even have a ton of amazing songs but everything just flows. A perfect snapshot of the summer of love.
New mix, of course.
Maybe a little overhyped, but still one of the best albums of all time. 95/100
The Beatles were good. This is a top three album of theirs in my opinion. Even Ringo got a good one in there. It's hard to find anything wrong with it.
Brilliant album - Amazing mix of genres and emotions. The remaster sounds fantastic.
Wow!
Better than I remembered!
Another album that I'm probably too close to to be able to evaluate objectively; at one point this was my favorite Beatles album, but now I think I would rank it fourth. It's still an easy 5/5 though. I love George's solo on Fixing a Hole. Ringo's drumming on A Day In The Life is masterful.
could it beeeee anybodyyyy i just want someone to love oh i get by with a little help from my friends gonna try with a little help from my friends
An absolute classic!!!
The quintessential Beatles album, and perhaps the one that comes to mind the most for the average punter whenever they think of the Fab Four. Contains arguably the best song they ever recorded in ‘A Day In The Life’, but there are highlights aplenty, such the druggy ‘Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds’, the whimsical ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’, future theme song for The Wonder Years and Joe Cocker special, ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’, ‘Lovely Rita’ with the slightly subversive ending and so on and so forth. An album full of subtext, brimming with creativity and sonic experimentation galore (it’s incredibly produced), and designed to be listened to as a full artistic statement from start to finish, not just as a bunch of songs thrown together onto a record. Anyway, there aren’t enough superlatives you can lavish on ‘Sgt. Pepper’. It was incredible in 67’, it’s incredible today, and will still be incredible in 100 years from now.
musical embodiment of fun
A classic
Absolute classic
Just a masterpiece
One of the best! The one and only is he white album of the Beatles!
i believe this to be one of the beatles best albums.
This is just a perfect album. Great songs start to finish. I’m not a huge fan of the Indian sounding ones, but they’re all great.
A classic.
One of my favorites. So innovative.
Utter Masterpiece.
If it weren't for this album, so much of my favourite songs wouldn't exist
Really nothing to be said but amazing and a masterpiece.
Hits throughout, moves your heart and stimulates the ears/mind, this one’s special. My favorite so far.
While maybe not the greatest Beatles album, still a great album.
Vaudeville and music hall is such a pervasive influence on English culture, especially in the 60s and 70s! You even see it in Iron Maiden gigs. A day in the life is a perfect ending to the album. The most influential album of all time? God, imagine this with Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. Song by song not my favourite album, or even my favourite Beatles album, but daaaaamn
Okay, I have to tell the story about this insane coincidence I experienced in regards to this album. Last night, I was looking around on itch.io for games and I saw one that included the phrase "a day in the life" in the title. So me, having brain rot, said out loud, "Oh my god, a day in the life? Beatles reference?" I then noticed the time and decided to check on what my next album would be. As I did this, I, again, said out loud, "Now watch me get a Beatles album." Lo and behold, I got Sgt. Pepper's and, needless to say, I was shocked. You know what else is needless to say? "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a really good album." What can I really say? It's The Beatles at the start of their peak. The songwriting is solid with there being a very light, but noticeable, concept for the album, making this one of the first notable concept albums to really hit it big. The sound is still great. I listened to the most recent mixing of this album and it sounds great. There's some nice transitions between songs and the variety between each and every song on this album is just wonderful. There's some very interesting choices that, in my opinion, work to make this album better. Letting George make his Indian-inspired song, having a song that only features John, Paul, and string instruments, and various others make this a very bold album for the time. And do I even need to talk about the sorta aforementioned "A Day in the Life?" That ending is just magnificent. Overall, while I do like Abbey Road more, Sgt. Pepper's is a great album that deserves to be considered one of the best of all time. 5/5.
I had a poster of this album cover on my bedroom wall during high school. Need I say more?
Rock, psychedelic, beat, male, mid, keys, oriental, very balanced, well arranged and recorded, aged very well, an album for every situation
My favorite Beatles Album since 7th grade.
Well of course it’s great. We all know that already.
# Playlist track - When I'm 64 # Notes - It's been some time and this album still hits GREAT. - I hate that Spotify has 3 different stupid deluxe versions of the albums, but not the mono! - Great companion all around. Impossible not to give it all the stars.
Not my fave beatles album, but seems odd to give anything less than 5
Obvious game-changer, raising the bar on how the studio could be used as an instrument. While the Sgt. Pepper-themed material hasn’t aged so well, tracks like “Within You Without You” and “A Day in the Life” sound as fresh and innovative today as they did all those years ago…
It really is a great album. As with revolver, it is always good to hear the “other” songs that aren’t on their blue album or on a greatest hits type list. From front to back, it’s an entertaining album with fun and well written songs.
Classic. Good fun listen. Pretty diverse too.
What more can be said? Inspired by the Beach Boy's "Pet Sounds", The Beatles accepted the challenge and advanced their musical depth by huge leaps and bounds. Incredible to compare the bubblegum sound of "Meet the Beatles" to this gem four years later. Every track is terrific.
I always thought it was my favorite album - and I love a day in the life - but is it really the Beatles best work?
Although George is my fave, his 'Within You, Without You' is the only out-of-place thing on this disc. Nevertheless, I'll give the record a high 5 with or without that track.
Simply the greatest album of all time. Even if it had come out today it would be incredible but the fact it is nearly 60 years old and changed the course of music makes it even more extraordinary.
Is there anything more terrifying than the last 20 seconds of this album?
This is the first Beatles album I’ve listened to all the at through. Very interesting songs. The last song was pretty jarring and unexpected.
Absolute legendary classic, superb tracks from start to finish. Beatles at their peak. Easy listening, engaging, lots of interesting and unique songs. Awesome vibes.
A tried and true classic.
Stunning album!!
4.5
Absolutely love the Beatles. This is beyond a doubt an amazing album and the first one to get 5 stars before I even listened to it.
The best album ever . Love the creativity, variety (humour to pathos) and everything in between! Just brilliant
My favorite Beatles album with my favorite song, A Day in the Life. It's a classic. How many albums can I say I know all the songs? Not many. The Beatles, musical geniuses all.
The best ever. People forget that Revolver/Rubber Soul/Sgt Pepper was the greatest consecutive trio of records ever released.
Who is Billy Shears? Anyway, this album is obviously great. Lots of great songs I’ve heard of and others that I listened to for the first time. I appreciate concept albums and this one rocks.
Love the Beatles!
GOAT. What can I say? Great harmonies, lyrics, and sound.
There's not much left to be said for this album. A total classic, it was one of the, if not *the*, album which set out the possibilities of the recording studio. The songs are top notch. It would be churlish to rate this at anything less than 5. But... I personally find some of the more music hall styles songs rather mawkish. Maybe I've just been exposed to this album for too many decades!

I have actually listened to this album before and love The Beatles’ music. However, I’m not too familiar with every single song so I re listened to this album to refresh my memory and fell in love with it again. My favourite tracks were: She’s leaving home, Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Good morning good morning, and With a little help from my friends. I didn’t find any bad tracks so I will listen to more of this album.
I loved this album. Great songs. I had not heard many of them. I finally understand the rave about the Beatles.
One of the best albums of all time, but still not my fav Beatles album. Headphone psychedelic masterpiece! Just goes to show that LSD can make you score an even bigger hit, pun intended! Prob the greatest, most recognizable album cover ever tho!
Iconic. The Beatles best work. This album changed music and the recording process. Experimental genius.
Classico indiscutible. Producción extremadamente innovadora que a dia de hoy sigue sonando increíble.
Groundbreaking, and classic for so many reasons.
An era when they still made pretty awesome music
Obviously a banger. Just when the Beatles started experimenting a being a little more weird and less bubble-gum pop. Ending on A Day In The Life really completes it
Outstanding album. Hadn’t heard it before but of course I knew almost all the songs. Within You Without You was new to me and I loved it. Great songwriting and production. Very inspiring.
This is a great album. Start to finish solid songs.
Best and favorite Beatles Album. So incredibly smart.
Brilliant! Creative genius. Great bass lines, of course! This was quite innovative for the times. Love it!
One of the all time best

Absolute classic. Plenty of variety. Always nice to dive back into an album you already really enjoy.
Love it!
Classic
Almost felt imposing have to write a review about this album. Every song features state of the art production and has aged perfectly thanks to its often unconventional techniques. The performances are spot on. Each part is far more complex than any before (hear the way McCartney's bass contributes its own powerful melodies while guiding the listeners ear) and full of diverse, inspired instrumentation. The use of reverb and echo create the most authentic aural simulation of psychedelia ever created, tying the album together in its daydream-like sunshine. Even the songs that are weaker than the average from Revolver (Lovely Rita, Fixing a Hole) are delivered in a way that supercedes anything done before - and possibly after - by the band. More than any album before it, Sgt Pepper is best enjoyed as an album than just a set of songs. Every song flows perfectly and its clever use of segues bring the album to life far more than Revolver. Each track flows perfectly into each other, for example the eruptive transition between Good Morning and the remarkable finale of the reprise and the Beatles' masterpiece, A Day In The Life. Altogether, Sgt Pepper is a remarkable piece of art and timeless contemporary pop.
A Ferber classic!
My father had this album in his collection. Listening to it yesterday trying to have a fresh perspective what I took from the listening was that it is an album of stories loosely tied together. Good album.
Milestone
Absolutely love this album. Lennon BVs sound incredible and Paul hasn’t gone full parlour songs yet.
Classic in every way. One of those albums you hear something new every time.
While being full newbie to Beatles, this album sounds nice. Has great common vibe and a couple of very catchy tracks. Maybe to people who listened to Beatles more, it could be a bit boring and lateral, but not for me) Great start of this jorney!
One of the most famous Beatles albums, and at the time revolutionary for a rock record. While I think Abbey Road is a better album and some songs feel a bit dated now, it's impact is hard to measure. Also, the remix from a few years ago, gave the record a new and different sonic feel, and I noticed a few of new things.
Great Album! A classic that I haven't listened to in about 30 years. It brings back some memories.
Something I noticed a few months ago while listening to one of the best compilations of the Beatles was that I knew almost 95% of the songs. I don't particularly care for the Beatles and I don't go out of my way to listen to them with this listening being an exception that. This album was a similar experience. I knew every track on it. Its an amazing journey/experience to listen to. Especially within you without you.
Perfect album. No explanation needed.
Definitely iconic album.
It’s just great
Awesome.
HUH
Great album, listened to it first in my teens.
Fantastisches Album. Remastered Version klingt excellent.
What can one say, it's Sgt Peppers. It's one of the most iconic albums ever, from the cover art to the massive hits. It was the album that brought psychedelia to the masses and a 180 degree change from the Beatles previous Power Pop. It spawned fashion and aesthetics movements, or at least popularized them, and was the basis for the look and feel of the movie The Yellow Submarine.
I get high with a little help from my friends :-)
5/5 one of my fav Beatles albums. No notes
Yeah, pretty much no notes here. I said Abbey Road was the band’s best, and I still feel that way, but this is their most innovative and significant album. Hell, it’s THE most innovative and significant record.
Of course this is a classic.
What more can be said about this album that hasn’t already been said?
My one regret for the human race is that the Beatles were stubborn and refused to put singles on albums. Imagine if Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were on here. Even better, imagine if they replaced the only weak tracks, She's Leaving Home and When I'm Sixty Four (I'm with John - I dont care much for Paul's music hall obsession). Almost the perfect album. If I heard this for the first time now without any knowledge of what it is, I'd give it 3.5*. However, when you consider when this came out, and how groundbreaking it is, that surely bumps up to 4.5*. Rounding up due to finishing with Day In The Life.
One of my favorite albums of all time :)
Discazo con canciones de gran simpleza, pero muy pegadizas. Tarareables y melódicas de uno de los mejores grupos de siempre
One of the best Beatles albums.
When I was a teenager, I had a brief obsession with "With a Little Help From My Friends." I loved the Beatles and Joe Cocker versions of this song, but the only version that was accessible for me to listen to repeatedly was the Beatles version. My parents had Sgt. Pepper's on vinyl, and they wouldn't let me try to set the needle on the record player down on a certain song, so I'd listen to the title track, and then go right into "With a Little Help From My Friends." That was as far as I'd make it, so this was my first time listening to this whole album. This is my fourth Beatles album to get, and I didn't have incredibly high hopes. My most recent album of theirs was The White Album, which I liked, but I thought was very overrated; I view this album to be in the same vain in that it's experimental, so I thought I might be in for another letdown. Thankfully, that didn't wind up being the case. It took me a few listens today, but I like this album, and I think it's incredibly well made. The thing I like about the Beatles' earlier work is that it's very well made. Nothing is too crazy and over the top, but the singing, guitar playing, and drum playing are all executed to perfection. Those elements still exist here, with the added layer of some great psychedelic instrumentation via organ and sitar playing. To top it off, the production work is some of the best work that George Martin did with the Beatles, if not in all of rock history. The sounds are varied, but this album still feels coherent, something that The White Album lacks. One of my favorite things about this album are a few little details in some of the sounds: -The echo or distorted effect that you can hear in the guitar during the chorus of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (that's the best way I can describe it) -The pianet melody on "Getting Better" (at least that's what I assume it is) -The plucking of the viola on "She's Leaving Home" (or maybe that's the harp? Look, I'm clearly no expert, but I just hope that the average person can read this review and know what I'm talking about) This is a fantastic album, and it's one I'll revisit often.
It is good
Legendary
Comments: The bestest of the best! Favorite tracks: With a Little Help from My Friends, A Day in the Life Rating: 5/5
A fun romp through a famous album. Brought back lots of memories of listening to that album on my portable record player in my basement growing up…trying to scratch like a rap DJ. You can’t get more classic Beatles than this one.
Literally an iconic album cover, all those famous faces! I've never looked closely, I love the baby Beatles on the left. I've never listened to Sgt Pepper's straight through, but I know most of the songs, and "A Day In The Life" is one of my favorite Beatles songs. The Wikipedia page is, as usual, a great read. I did not know that "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" were the first two songs recorded for this album, but the studio made them release those as a single and exclude them from the album. I would've liked to have heard SFF on here, one of my greatest music on drugs memories is of that song (through a bass amp in a college dorm room, ah). Definitely listen to this one through nice headphones - it makes the studio wizardry much more apparent, the deep and thorough layering of sounds, and really highlights the very melodic bass parts that Paul concocted for himself. Look, it's the Beatles alter ego band just jamming and doing drugs and changing the course of pop music. You can't underestimate the impact of every thing about this album, it's wild. I had the privilege of meeting and watching one of the top Beatles cover bands in Japan about a decade ago. They had costumes for every Beatles era and traveled around the country (and world) performing. I spoke with "Paul" a few times - his favorite costume and album were Sgt. Pepper - it's a 5.
Surely one of the most influential albums of all time? I don't think that there's a single track on this album that isn't good.
Yeah, I’m gonna be biased here. I love the Beatles. They’re one of my all time favourite bands. And while I don’t think that this album is their best ever, it has a special place in my heart. It was the first album I ever bought on a vinyl record, and that started me on my vinyl collecting journey. And due to that, it’s one of my most heard Beatles albums. I can’t give it any less than 5 stars. Not every song is a masterpiece. Lovely Rita, Good Morning Good Morning, Fixing a Hole, they’re far from the best Beatles songs. But as a whole, the album just works so well. And the great songs are amazing. Everyone knows that A Day in the Life is a masterpiece. I really don’t know what to say about this album. It’s not perfect but I just love it so much. I can’t reasonably give it a 10/10, but I can’t bear to put it much lower. Can’t even narrow down to a top 5. Definitely gonna be one of my top albums on this list. 9.5/10 Top 6: 1. A Day in the Life 2. She’s Leaving Home 3. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds 4. With a Little Help From My Friends 5. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (and Reprise) 6. When I’m Sixty Four
I don't think there's an album out there that had a bigger impact on me than "Sgt. Pepper." Someone let me borrow it when I was about 13, and it blew my damn mind. I knew about and enjoyed the Beatles before this, of course, but was mostly familiar with their earlier, poppier stuff. I had no idea what a concept album was, and had no idea what was going on with this album. Did they record it in front of a live audience? Was there video of this benefit for Mr. Kite? And who the shit was Billy Shears? I didn't have any answers to those questions at the time, but one thing was immediately clear: I was listening to genius at work. My opinion hasn't changed in the intervening years. This album is always in the conversation when people discuss the greatest album ever, and rightfully so. It's a masterpiece, all the way down to the cover. Throw in the cultural context of the time and its impact on contemporary and future musicians, and it's hard for me to justify putting this album anywhere except at the peak of the mountain.
Fantastic
Refreshing. Loved it!
Despite not really following as much of a concept as everyone believes (it trails off after 'With a Little Help from my Friends', this is the greatest album ever.
A high water mark in human expression. Cool to think of the whole album as a show within a show that is a psychodelic circus vaudville band and also an indian raga band. The record even has this natural space that sounds like a hall. When I'm 64 is a personal favorite Beatles song.
I mean, it's just an amazing album. I know that music historians will focus on the concept of the album, or the odd mix of genres, or maybe the sound engineering. But I'm glad that the Beatles did so while _also_ writing another collection of great songs.
I don't know if this the "best" Beatles album, but its the one I have the most nostalgia for. My parents had this on vinyl, and Trav and I would put it on frequently because of the iconic, colorful cover and the connection to the animate Yellow Submarine movie.
Still feels groundbreaking. Even the songs where I want to tell Paul to give it a break ('When I'm 64') are annoyingly catchy. And 'A Day in the Life' is still so good.

BEST ALBUM EVER.
yyayayayayyayaya 10/10. Outstanding. Quite an evident influence on literally every form of popular music today.
What a fantastic album! I feel like this one is more joyous/upbeat and less melancholic that their other works. It’s a great spin and shows of all their musical strengths! 9 out of 10
Extremely good. Generally more happy than i remembered. Sykt fet intro, og Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds er helt rå
I'm pretentious, but not pretentious enough to rate this less than it deserves. Hearing this album was a pretty huge moment in my life at 13, the first "iconic" and "best of all time" album I had ever heard. Strongest 4.5 stars around, still love it.

Excellent album
I did some extensive research on my own personal little dissection into "Beatlemania" because I truly wanted to understand all of it. And there were multiple titles thrown out there but the name I saw the most was this one... "Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". A title like that alone is enough to capture you and make you wonder many things at once.... So I listened to it twice. Once to say that I listened. And the second time to truly grasp it. Did it work? No. Did my mind begin to unlayer the historical importance of having an album like this exist within the landscape multiple decades go? Yes. I wouldn't say I get the album as a whole, it feels more like a collection than a theme and honestly it really may just be a "you had to be there" kind of thing, but I appreciate its artistry. These 4 men were at the climax of music creation and came together to ignite a sort of musical fusion. Looking back i onto it now in the lens of the 21st century I see this as more than an album but an art piece. Meant to be seen as capsulation of time for those who were around to witness. It's a kind of turning point for them and for the people who listened. For those to marvel upon it, for the simple fact of being in existence........... It also helps that the music is pretty fucking good too. For the people who are skeptical and don't understand the hype of The Beatles try this album out and hear what they sounded like at their best. 5 out of 5 stars. No question.

The masterpiece…incredible album with so much influence and impact…the entire album is pure gold to me and so glad it’s on this list…
The godfather of progressive rock, the album that turned music into art. Sgt. Pepper’s is a masterpiece of production. Its songs are eclectic and beautiful. It’s the first of its kind. It’s greater than the sum of its parts, aside from the closer A Day In The Life, which can make a strong case for being the greatest song ever written. 9.2/10
When I first heard this as a teenager I was a touch underwhelmed ('this is the so-called greatest album ever? It's not as good as Abbey Road, for starters'). Even when it came up today I hadn't decided if it was worth 4 or 5 stars. But listening again, it's an easy choice. So many iconic yet very different tracks (stylistic u-turns everywhere you look) drenched in gorgeous technicolour production. A Day In The Life just seals the deal.
Obra magistral.
Production musicale incroyable. J'avais totalement oublié l'existence de Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite qui est sympa. Petit milieu d'album un peu "mou". A day in the life : probablement une des plus belles chansons des Beatles
Very close to a perfect Album
Amazing in every way
Another excellent The Beatles album. Follows the psychedelic style of Revolver.
These folks were on another level
Didn't like the song within you without you
Opening and penultimate track are often on repeat when I listen to this album. Such a great album. Needs to be listened from start to end to be appreciated fully by new listeners. Standout tracks for me: - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - With a Little Help from My Friends - She's Leaving Home - Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! - When I'm Sixty-Four - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) And of course, A Day in the Life. It's such a shame that Penny Lane and especially Strawberry Fields Forever (which I consider their best song) did not end up on it - it would cement its place as the best rock album in history IMO.
Have listened several times, great album
Six stars
great
