Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Overly scrappy but some likeable moments
This album grew on me throughout the day.
Some decent strum-and-sing tracks, and a bunch of more adventurous indie stuff.
3.5
Nice punky vibe, some of the songs I actually noticed as I was listening, but mostly another bakcground album.
Not what i thought, kind of power pop sometimes, too post modern at other times
This was an… interesting album. I really liked the first two tracks, then they really lost me after that for a little while, but the last several songs redeemed it a bit. There’s some pretty interesting and unusual songwriting. 6/10
Heard a few Sebadoh albums, but this wasn't one of them. There were some songs I really liked -- "Soul and Fire" and "Homemade" were great, but there's a fair amount of stuff that just sounds like Lou goofing around too. So, it's pretty inconsistent. Some nice highs and some low lows. 3.5
3.5
Skulle typ kalla detta ett dinosaur jr b-sido album. Inte dåligt dock
lofie indie rock, I've never heard before but at first i feel this album is great yet after a while it's like a generic, still worth to listen
nice enough
Not really for me. It’s sort of un-put-together sounding to me, in some songs the words don’t sound quite right. However some of the songs were really good !! I probably won’t listen to most of it again, however.
mixed bag but overall a net good for me
Weird album, but I didn't hate it
interesting mix of indie, grunge, and punk. not sure it works well but it wasnt bad
Some cool sounds but vocals were very dated sounding
Groupe totalement inconnu. =>3/5
"Soul And Fire" more generic, slow-paced grunge a la budget Nirvana. The faster-paced alt-rock "Sacred Attention" and "Sister" sound is better.
Like the music. A very 90’s grunge sound. Overall a good album. 3/5 Might listen again
Weirder and more discordant than the skinny boy whining I was expecting
3.5 Chaotic surfer punk that is best when they slow it down.
Rockmuziek die me een beetje aan Weezer doet denken. Klinkt prima. ***
Not sure if I liked this one, but will listen to again soon cause I just might
Dinosaur Jr. x Violent Femmes x The Pixies x Nirvana x Red Vox = Sebadoh. I was ready to give up after the fourth song.. man that song was bad. Theres a lot of stuff I like that is combined with stuff I am not a fan of. Someone needs to check on this singer cus man he fits the clinically depressed description perfectly. Looked at the wiki after, pretty funny that I referenced Dinosaur Jr. as one of the vocalists is the founder. Also similar to Dinosaur Jr. I am very mixed on this one. 6/10
There are some beautiful moments on here, and some very creative confusion...and a whole lot of question marks. I get that it's supposed to sound rough and unfinished, a bit like a fever dream, and it's surprising how cool that comes off some of the time. Unsurprising, though, how pretentious it sounds a lot of the time, too. The lyrics, which amount to a lot of anger that girls don't live up to some boring adolescent dream of what they should be, get repetitive.
Enjoyable 3.5
New band and album to me. Some of the slower songs were good. I would’ve liked this more if I’d heard it then.
I always prefer Lou when he's in Dinosaur Jr. Not as low-fi as some of their albums, there is some production here and Lou stretches himself here by actually writing a range of songs and he remembers melodies. Early 90's post Nirvana rock; not at its best, but definitely not at its worst either. It's somewhere in the middle. Best Tracks: Soul and Fire; Cliche; Flood
lofi indie rock that hinges on grunge and garage rock with some punk influences as well on this album. it's also the original band for the Dino Jr. frontman, which is pretty funky.
Really enjoyed the first half
Cliche was the first track I really liked. Sacred Attention and Homemade had great sound as well. The album starts off weak and doesn’t really hit stride until about 1/3 way in at the above tracks. Overall I enjoyed it, but not sure if I would listen again. 3
I don't know the low-fi isn't really my thing but it also didn't totally hurt my ears
A variety of different styles in all parts of the music on a song by song basis. I think the tracks were a bit too short to stick, but it was pretty good.
Mediocre appeal.
Interesting but not very original
Just okay. Somewhat dynamic! If I had the cassette I probably would have listened to it a lot but there are more options now
I prefer my Sebadoh when they show a little vulnerability and they don't act like it's all just a joke, like on the first and best track of the album, Soul and Fire. Unfortunately, they don't make a lot of these on that album, but I guess that's what Bakesale is for. I mean, I love slacker rock but you don't have to act like you're not trying at all.
Probably the only tolerable Slacker Rock band out there.
Hey, this is far from a masterpiece, but they got a couple of pretty great slacker rock songs out there! Maybe it's all a little spoiled by some "joke" or "I don't care" songs. Anyway, I enjoyed it as a pure 3 stars.
Some bits are 4+. Some don't even deserve a 1. 3 is generous.
Feels like how I picture nirvana in my head, but with a sprinkling of really hard to listen to songs. The amount of dissonance in some of the songs is too much for me. Interesting enough. 2.5 rounded up (if I listened to it again I'm sure I'd give it a 2, but I think that would just be me getting even more annoyed with songs like Fantastic Disaster)
This early 90s indie college rock never did much for me (other than Superchunk) tho there’s some nice songs here
This album had everything you would expect from early 90s Indie rock: Some songs that are surprisingly listenable with new and energetic material, and some songs overflowing with weirdness and unnecessary shrieking . That balances out to a perfectly inoffensive average score. I do hope they gave Kurt Vonnegut credit for the central part of their cover art (IYKYK)
What a range of rock. Some of this is quite good, but some is quite bad/weird.
Not bad! 3.5/5
Seems like a fine Indie Rock album, very reminiscent of Sonic Youth but a little more punk and less experimental.
Feels like a precursor to what 90s grunge and indie would become.
I like the experimental nature (they are definitely not going for a slick hit record) and the album has got tons of ideas and personality, but often these elements just clash, rather than compliment each other. Some tracks are top notch, like the menacing 'Happily Divided', propulsive 'Sacred Attention', the catchy pop of 'Bouquet For a Siren' and the extended 'Homemade'. But all too often they sound like an amateur band that forgot to check their guitars are tuned or play in the same key or agree on a tempo. It's deliberate, but it detracts rather than adds any value. I don't get it, don't they want to display themselves at their best, as they're obviously capable. I'm on the fence how much I actually enjoyed it; I certainly need to be in the right mood.
I like the discordant sort of sound of this, but it does jar a little at times. Good album though
It was weird, I kept wanting to dislike it, but I really didn't. Angsty yet subdued, a bit like Dinosaur Jr with a hint of Mclusky, but felt that they kept pulling their punches. Could have been more edgier, although overall, I enjoyed it. On a side note, I couldn't help think that Placebo ripped off "Soul and Fire", felt a lot of similarities with "Burger Queen" and "Lady of the Flowers".
This was okay. Representative of alt rock during the time.
not bad but not super interesting. Sounds like a lot of other acts from the era.
Bog standard 90s rock. Fine and inoffensive, but didn't do much for me. Not sure what was so special about this.
some good songs, mostly not my taste but in a live setting i see myself enjoying it more. many songs remind me of nirvana which makes sense, since this came out in 93.
Good
3,5
Hadn’t heard this - very much in my wheelhouse but didn’t do a huge amount for me. A VERY generous three.
Mah, una review dice che l’album migliora con ogni canzone ma per me è stato l’opposto
Easy to listen to but no really catchy or interesing songs.
Good songwriting that showcases the more gruff indie sound of the early 90's. I especially enjoy the variety of songs and sounds
Correcto
In the 1990s, at the left end of the radio dial -- between the conspiracy theories and the fire 'n' brimstone -- there was college radio, and it sounded just like this.
Liked this
I liked the sound, but didn't connect with a few of the songs
Didn't hate it.
Weird but mostly good! I can hear it in the basement with a lot of other inspirations of a lot of the music I really cherish
This was fine. It wasn't the best album I've ever heard, but I didn't hate it. It was pretty unremarkable.
okay, with the caveat that i only listened to what was available on spotify: rly surprised that the tail half of this grew on me. i really thought i was gonna despise the whole thing. 2.5
Pretty cool lo-fi rock. The first track is definitely the best by a country mile, but the rest of the album is interesting as well. I probably won’t go back to this often, but still cool.
I don’t know whether this is a slow burning indie classic or a bit of a ramble. I’d have been listening to Pixies at the time so would probably have considered this a bit second rate.
A weird ass record but still enjoyable, reminds me a bit of early sonic south.
It's ok, I guess. I feel like albums like these are dime a dozen in this list.
Kind of fun I guess
Solid Indie Album. Liked the slower songs more than the faster songs.
I like this album when it has interesting dissonant tones of bass and guitar, like in Elixir Is Zog - beautifully scruffy slacker rock. In general it struggles from the usual problems that plague slacker rock and 90s alternative in general - unrefined punky energy creating uncohesive and/or bloated albums. Fave Tracks: Soul and Fire, Sixteen, Homemade 3.4/5
Pleasant. Listened to during lunch.
nothing noteworthy here. it’s a fun album that suffers from what a lot of bands did back in that era… a lot of 90’s bands kind of sounded the same.
it was okay
Likably slack and raffish, with some interesting moments but maybe too DIY-ly unambitious for its own good. The winning cuts include "Cliche," "Homemade" and the opener. "Flood" is a bad closer.
POV: you are in a play wrong notes and sing off key challenge and this is your opponent. Interesting album though, the off key notes definitely added to the mystery and weirdness
This is pretty good. I like how off-kilter it sounds at times
3.5/5
Enjoyed the first song - Wasnt huge fan after that tho
I really like some parts of this album but other parts not so much
Some pretty cool alt-rock stuff, nothing really spectacular to suggest why the inclusion, but quite a few tracks I dug enough to keep so no complaints. Some quirky instrumentals mixed in, and that's not always a bad thing. Favorite tracks: Fantastic Disaster, Emma Get Wild, Homemade, No Way Out. Album art: Really cool, a sort of burned-out painting or something with more art beneath it. Not entirely sure what I'm looking at, but I like it. 3.5/5
Not too bad, but when it did sound different from bands of the time it didn't sound good. There were a couple songs that were okay! Just not my style, probably.
Nice one
Just fine!
Never heard of them before, which is cool. I like the idea that they all write and perform all of the instruments, but one or maybe two of them are much worse than the other(s). This album goes from good 90's indie/rock to just atonal messes of bad shit. Songs like "Sacred Attention" are awesome, give me an album worth of those. "Fantastic Disaster" is true to it's name I guess. It's literally hard to listen to because it's all out of tune. If you ignore the turds (and there are a lot) this is a pretty good album. I've always liked guitar/bass/drum trios and this is no exception. Jut tell the one guy to get his ears checked.
Can definitely hear the Meat Puppets in this. Not much unique here though.
This is interesting. Not my favorite, but interesting to listen to.
Twas ok, but not for me. There is a lot of slacker core on the spectrum from the Lemonheads up towards the pixies amd this sat in the middle without really standing out. I enjoyed the first couple of tracks before it starts to lose me.
Empezó bien pero todo se fue plp después
Eh, it’s fine. I was excited to see a Sub Pop album that I had never heard before come up, and it was an ok listen, but there wasn’t anything that grabbed me enough to want to come back to it. Soul And Fire, Sacred Attention, and Bouquet for a Siren came close, but otherwise, nothing specific stands out. To its credit, it’s unique - my favorite part of the album is how it borders on pure chaos at points. That’s ultimately what I’ll remember about this album, is how well they strike the balance between traditional songwriting and chaos. They remind me of the Meat Puppets in that sense, but I feel like the Meat Puppets stick the landing better. Overall, some good moments and a unique listen - but as a whole, doesn’t really land for me. Side note - after writing this, I was intrigued enough that I went to their main page on Spotify and checked out their top tracks. Actually really like some of their other stuff, might have to revisit this one at some point. I’ll admit, I didn’t like the Meat Puppets at first, and now I love them, so maybe these guys will grow on me like they did.
A sound that veers too heavily into the atonal, but strikes gold with Cliche, Forced Love, and Think.
Today’s album started as something I felt I was going to really enjoy, as it sounded like something I like to call “apathy-rock”. However, perhaps around halfway through the album I found myself becoming more and more apathetic to listening to more. Usually, this doesn’t affect me with this type of music, but I did find myself slowly growing bored here.
Bakesale or Harmacy would have been a better choice. Not wildly different but just better executed than this.
Enjoyed this, will listen again
Some interesting early indie sounds from a band who never seemed to really take off in the way they probably should’ve, especially when compared to some peers from the same time. Not something I’m in a hurry to revisit, but cool enough to have a few tracks charm their way into a playlist.
Lo-fi rock's frill-free ethos captured but lacking the thrills to keep one fully enraptured.
Kinda like Superchunk meets Pavement. Definitive 90s alt rock. Nothing short of good music but, lets be fair its not *groundbreaking*. Just a fun new listen.
I would eat up most of that wooshy '90s alt-rock sound that felt like maladaptive daydreaming while on road trip on a cloudy day. At the first few tracks, I thought this one is, but it turns out it's just a mildly interesting '90s indie rock effort. There are some punkier, messier, and more interesting albums than this for sure.
I can see how it progressed music, but never did they stick the landing between aesthetic perfection and harmonic dissonance. Some cool ideas, but the purposeful lack of polish felt more amateur than avant-garde
3.5/5
Soul and Fire 3.5 Two Years Two Days 3.4 Telecosmic Alchemy 3.2 Fantastic Disaster 2.8 Happily Divided 3 Sister 3.3 Cliché 3.6 Sacred Attention 3.8 Elixir Is Zog 3.2 Emma Get Wild 3.4 Sixteen 3.3 Homemade 4 Forced Love 3.6 No Way Out 3.3 Bouquet for a Siren 3.4 Think (Let Tomorrow Bee) 3.4 Flood 3.1 Score: 3.370588235
Quite good album. Wasn't sure what to expect.
I really like independent rock. I liked parts of the album. However, there was nothing on it that made me want to listen to the music more often. 3/5
3/5. Gotta appreciate the uniqueness of the sound, and the willingness to try sounds that normally don't go together. Sometimes it works, a lot of the times it does not. There are some great punk/pop songs on here, but it would require a re-listen to see if I actually enjoyed the listen or if the shock was the main thing that drew me in. Best Song: Soul and Fire, Sister, Emma Get Wild
Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Indie rock.
Some good songs
2.5. Here's what I've decided about this album: I like this album fine when they go for a more acoustic sound/slower/more low-key songs. Songs that I thought were fine/overall enjoyable include: Soul and Fire, Happily Divided, and Cliche. I did not like at all the songs included in this album that took a stab at more high-tempo, loud, "rock" sounding music. I love rock music, it's one of my favorite genres. But songs like "Telecosmic Alechemy", "Fantastic Disaster", and "Sister" almost made me consider giving up on this album; they are BAD.
recommended if you like: nirvana, mac demarco, talking about how you used to go to basement shows, the mountain goats, owning ancient chuck taylors, lo-fi
While J Mascis does seem like a controlling bandmember, I much prefer the collaborative work that Barlow and Mascis produce together rather than separately. Long live Western Mass. 2.5/5
I listened last night and did write a review then. Now, I don’t have any specific memory of the album. My vague recollection was it was tolerable at best and I had no interest in listening again.
Some of it I liked and some of it I got bored with. It was ok.
Too noisy to complete the entire album but not really against it
Yeah this was totally fine! I felt relatively impartial about it. Reminded me of like Ben Folds or Death Cab I think, which put me off a little
Hmm, this was a bit too post-punk for me, but didn't hate it
A frustrating listen as the discordant parts just straight up suck. And that's not me disliking discordance, I listen to Industrial Drone for fun... these guys just aren't good at it. The actual songs are decent though
At first I wondered how this band made it out of the garage. It got better, except for Elixir is Zog, which I skipped due to the screaming. The rest were all good enough songs, but it seemed like they never figured out what kind of band they were.
About as low key as you can get. It was done lickety split
This is very early 90s, it's got indie rock written all over it. I like the vibe more than the individual songs.
Never heard of this band before, but there were enough interesting songs on here that I feel like they should be better-known than they are. I have to take off a couple stars because there are several real clunkers on here, and one of the singers kinda sounds like Morty and I couldn’t unhear it once I noticed.
I get that this isn't a masterpiece, but why such a low rating? This album is still pretty solid. It has great energy, is very diverse, and had decent enough performances from every instrument. It's certainly nothing that special, but there is nothing to actively dislike here.
Not my cuppa
A lot of it sounds heavily inspired by Sonic Youth. Rating: 3.1
Wasn't the biggest fan of this
Fine.
New to me, but I had at least heard of Dinosaur Jr. and of J Mascis as a legendary indie guitarist. The legend goes on from there that Lou Barlow meandered away and founded Sebadoh due to artistic differences with Mascis. Or maybe one of them preferred Pepsi while the other opted for Coke. This record, perhaps just a different brand of cola, relays the lo-fi headspace of scruffy low-key aggro bedroom bands in the realm of Sonic Youth, Slint and Beck. Not meant as a jab, clearly this record rocks. I genuinely enjoy metaphorical envigorating bubbly beverages, so cheers to the boundless, though less differentiated, creative expression.
Can't remember much about it, but it was pretty cool
Very Emo.
I like Sebadoh, but I've never really found an album that I felt was listenable the whole way through. Sebadoh III might be the closest, but this album suffers from the same problems - mostly three songwriters with vastly different visions that makes for a disjointed album. There are some very good songs on here, as well as some unlistenable tone experiments. It's a good album overall, but I definitely skipped some tracks.
When I started this project I was hoping there would be a lot more albums like Bubble And Scrape, an album I had never even heard of but that I liked. Doesn’t have to be a 5 star album but ever unknown to me albums that I’d get 3 are pretty rare. Bubble and Scrape is a low fi version forbearer of 2000s indie. Think is one of the best songs I had never heard. Love Homemade as well. 6.7/10
It was ok I suppose. Didn’t have the charm of some of its contemporaries but I’m sure a lot of disaffected teenage boys would have lapped this up.
Reminds me of some of Beck's work, but not as unique or memorable. It was OK. Starting to think this list should be "1001 forgettable and mediocre albums no one will remember".
The guitar part in Homemade sounds like an European ambulance sometimes. Album was alright some songs were much better than others. Sometimes the vocals were too quiet or were purposefully off key. Favorite songs were Soul And Fire, Sister, and Emma Get Wild
First artist I've been assigned that I have no experience with! Liked not loved! I might revisit one day but nothing particularly grabbed me, and some actively pushed me away.
90s indie. Bit whiny at times, raw at others.
OK
Better than Dinosaur Jr
Very typical rock album. Nothing overly great, but nothing overly poor. Main themes involving breakups, but as the songs were pretty short, I felt it lacked the chance for each song to develop properly. Sonically. There were some good attempts with utilizing some experimental instruments and sounds, but to me it ended up sounding a bit like noise. Not super aesthetically pleasing to me and nothing lyrically standing out to redeem it.
Starts strong but evens out towards the latter part
Many of thectracks sounded the same as the others
Started off strong and enjoyable then it was over Spotify only had 2 tracks. I liked the first song did not care for the second.
I had a great time listening to this record. Sebadoh are a band I knew by name, but haven't listened to much - after listening to this, I definitely want to check out more of their work. There are certainly grunge elements on this record, but they experiement and expand into many other genres too. It kept me on my toes. Whilst some tracks didn't resonate with me, many of them were great.
Can't figure out why this album from Sebadoh, instead of Bakesale or III or even Harmacy. Not that this is a bad album it's just that Bakesale is clearly superior and more accessible. This album does point to the better things on the horizon for these darling of the indie-rock scene. 3.5 stars
weird. there are a few songs here that are totally fine and even pleasant to listen to, but the other ones are atonal, meandering, intentionally bad (?) suckfests.
weird album but i enjoyed it overall. pretty hit and miss in terms of individual songs, like it started out strong and then just went off the rails into experimental, less tonal nonsense after a few tracks. would listen to these again as i like some of the other lo-fi indie groups from this time but i have a feeling this will not bode well with the general listening public on 1001... can't wait to check the reviews after this! favorites: soul and fire, two years two days, happily divided
Here I am, on my knees With nothing to blame but my curiosity It got the best of me
3.5
Wish there were half stars. 3 seems like an insult, and 4 too generous. Little to lo-fi sounding for my general taste.
The songs are definitely quite interesting. I like the lo-fi DIY vibe of all the songs, but not too sure about the atonal elements in some of the songs. Those sound like they could be part of the artistic intent, or it could just be poorly played parts. Guess we'll never know which it really is.
I liked it a lot, but it's not special.
I'm pretty sure this is the same as a lot of mid-90's Grungey/Alty/Rocky Garagey-type bands that existed? Not that it's unpleasant. Just samey.
Meh
Didn't hate it.
It has the potential to be good but it still sounds noisy. Some songs are just awful. 3 of 5
3.3/5 Best track: Soul and Fire
This album was neat, but I feel like it suffers a bit to comparisons from other indie bands. I like what Pavement was doing with this era a lot more. Art has to be judged on its own, and this album certainly has some things to recommend it. It's just hard when this reminds me so much of other bands whose work I enjoy more than this 3/5
It’s more accessible than Sonic Youth and mostly less raucous than Dinosaur Jr. Fair to middling lo-fi US alternative “indie” rock.
Surprisingly positive about this one, very garagy
For when you want something real weird.
early 90s indie rock. Nothing really memorable or amazing but ok
This could have been a part of my mid 1990s playlist. Not great. But pretty good. 3.0
Some of this is really good, but some of it is just noise.
Odd mix of stuff
It's ok. Some songs felt more like demos. Maybe It's just the style. I don't think i will remember anything about this album. But also it's kinda like the music i listen to :D
Scraped through some songs, nothing special.
I liked the first song or two. Then it just turned into background music
Lots of distorted guitar Ok car listening, couldn’t make any of the lyrics out
just made me wanna bump pavement…
Ok
It's a bit *too* lo-fi for me. I honestly just found some of the tracks quite boring but a few were pretty good ones.
Sebadoh is an American Indie Rock band First Listen Genre: Indie Rock 1993 Single: Soul and Fire Standouts: Soul and Fire Rating: 3/5
Favorite tracks were Think and Flood
Enjoyable prog rock.
C’est pas mal juste correct
Ranges everywhere from absolute shit to really good. 3 because at it's best I liked it a lot
Nicht so meins.
My first impression was that this album is a more lethargic version of Coldplay, and who needs that? But I've listened to enough of the 1001 to trust the process, so that's what I did. And the album turned out to be pretty good, especially the tracks that had some bounce and pace.
Soft rock
Pretty fun slacker rock, but it isn't as good as the band it spawned from.
7/10
Not as grungy as I was worried it would be. Unpolished. OK
Indie rock
I liked about 1/3 of the songs, was neutral on 1/3, and really disliked the last 1/3. Just didn't care for the ones that were more discordant and immature sounding. Overall not bad but probably wouldn't listen to again. 3 stars.
I really like the Lou Barlow stuff, but Gaffney and Lowenstein's contributions leave me cold.
Varhais-emoa!
Album 100 of 1001 Sebadoh - Bubble and Scrape Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Homemade Some grunge...I'd say some punk aspects, as well. It certainly has its moments, but was careful not to give us too many of them. I can see possibilities.
Hein Robert ??
I really like the first two songs, hates the third, and thought the rest of the album was very hit or miss. I’d check it out again just to see how my opinion would change. I think there is potential.
oop I didn't keep track of tracks I liked or disliked but this was pretty good! would I listen again? totally!
A perfectly servicable, skewed indie album. Nothing jumped out, but the overall mix of lovelorn, shouty and abstract is enjoyable enough.
Interesting blend of rock genres. Sounds like Pavement to me. 3/5
Me ha recordado un poco a Weezer. Canciones directas. Pocos acordes. Mezcla de pop melódico y, en ocasiones, algo más guitarrero
Low-fi US indie that reminds me of early Pavement and Guided by Voices. Fine but without the charm of either of those.
This is exactly the genre I love, but wow if this isn't the dullest version
3.5
I don't think I've ever heard Sebadoh, but for some reason I thought they were metal. Their name sounds like a metal band, no?! Anyways, it turns out that they're indie-adjacent? The music ranges from soft and sweet to noisy and dissonant. Maybe atonal is a more fitting word than dissonant. I don't really know how I feel about this album. I went from loving it to being bewildered by it and back about ten times. It's good, I think? The more straightforward garage rock tracks certainly are.
Assez bien, très rock 90's, un peu grunge
Bubble & Scrape is the fourth album by American indie rock band Sebadoh. It was their first album recorded entirely in a studio and featured longer songs - a sign the band was focused more on polished albums. I had never heard of this band before, but the music was on par with other rock bands from the mid-90's. It was a good album, and fans of indie rock should love Bubble & Scrape.
Pretty good
So-so
Truly a Jekyll and Hyde album. The first two/three songs and one of the last ones have a cool sound and are enjoyable, the ones in between sound like a trainwreck
Some high highs, some low lows.
Loved a few tracks, soul and fire was cool. Was this annoying pattern on some songs of like nice soft stuff then weirdly hard but it just keeps oscillating. It wore on me after a long day in the office. That said, I feel as though I COULD like this album in the future. Pretty solid 3, feels like it could have been a 4 on another day.
Meh. Very 90s, so I'm not too into it. But , objectively, it's fine.
I remember my brother listening to Sebadoh after he got into dinosaur jr in high school. I liked a few of their songs but not much else and that kind of holds true here. I’m not a fan of noise for noise’s sake, so a lot of this album didn’t really do it for me. ‘Soul and Fire’ and ‘Homemade’ were the only real highlights
Not familiar with this band. The album seems very schizophrenic to me ranging from power pop ballads to growling vocals reminiscent of death metal and hardcore punk. It’s fine but it doesn’t hang together as an album for me.
Meh not really for me. This was fine, and sounds like a less poppy Nirvana which makes sense given they they shared a label. I thought the first half was stronger than the second half.
HL: "Homemade", "Think", "Soul and Fire" Neva heard of this band before today. The (bitter)sweet melodies in songs like "Think" make the atonality/noise in other songs surprising (e.g. "Fantastic Disaster"). And vice versa. Honestly I'm happy to have discovered Sebadoh, even though quality may vary among the 17 tracks on this particular release. February 8, 2023
Bouquet for a siren got some Nirvana vibes for sure. Also some Elliott smith vibes here and there. A couple solid songs on this album but a lot of just ~ok stuff too :/
Enjoyed it for now, but probably won't return to it.
Middelmatig indie plaatje
Nice but unsurprising
Light grungy rock from slackers. I liked it
very generic 90's
Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Pavement comparison is apt
a few good slow chill songs
Not bad, sorta reminded me of Ween.
Never heard of Sebadoh and expected less than what I got. For an early 90s album, Bubble and Scrape harkens back to some mid-80s punk rock, and that's not a bad thing. The 90s idea of punk rock became pop for the sake of punk and really ruined what was a great genre, had Sebadoh been the flag bearer for the genre, I'd be curious to see how much better it would become. My only critiques of this album are that for a punk-ish album it runs long at 47 minutes and some of the songs sound repetitive. 3/5.
A classic.
why is this an album i have to hear before i die?! i prefer dinosaur jr, this shounds bleh
очень вдохновилась словами инди, сабпоп и первой песней, но дальше не пошло)
Oddball and very Pavement-esque, some moments of pop brilliance - but in general trying to hard to be alternative - a fault of many albums of the era I guess. Also a bit tinny on the production side. A good listen though.
Oke
Sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom by a bunch of friends (though it’s actually studio-produced), which gives it a charming lo-fi air. However, several songs don’t stick around long enough to impact the listener in any meaningful way.
Slackerishly ragged and full-on stoner vibey, the best cuts come early and the willful and sloppy discordance of the rest wears itself out. Lacking the pathos (perhaps accidental) of Pavement or the elevating ennui of Dinosaur, Jr. or the depth and ambition of Sonic Youth. In other words, the overall effect is rather more of scrape than bubble. Some fun lines, (“Here I am, on my knees / With nothing to blame but my curiosity” and “I see something we should do / If you need one, then you need two / I won't hold back, so why should you?”) keep it just the right side of average but not quite all the way to excellence.
Good
If 'Gen-X Slacker' had a soundtrack, I think this would be it.
Good grungy stuff, fairly anonymous, but that works for me sometimes...liked the lack of commitment to being in key
Het is niet slecht. Las dat het shoegaze postrock was en was al heel verheugd dat er wat meer pit in zat. Bleek dan dat het om eigenlijk halfslachtige metal ging en daarvoor is het dan wel minder verrassend.
I liked a couple of songs, but a lot of it grated
A solid indie album that holds up in todays world. There is something in it's soundscape that screams 90s but it's a little hard to put my finger on what it is - perhaps it's the countless 90s teen shows that had soundtracks that were similar sounding. Best: Soul & Fire Worst: Fantastic Disaster
meh - didn't love it, didn't hate it.
Listened to bits and pieces. Sounds like it ramps up a lot to the point where the last track is kinda screamo? Don’t quite know what I think
One day my wife asked me if I knew who Lou Barlow was. She said she works with a woman who's his sister. Of course I knew who he was. I grew up a huge fan of Dinosaur Jr. and J. Mascis. But, it was a long time after Sebadoh formed before I started listening to them. And when I did this album had already come and gone. Harmacy was the first Sebadoh album I ever purchased, but it never grew on me and I'm pretty sure I sold it to Amoeba. Listening to this now, it still doesn't grow on me but it's way better than Harmacy. This is quintessential 90's alt-art-crap, hard to listen to today but cutting edge in the world it existed. This and other albums like it, proved anyone with something to say could be a musician, grow a following and build an album in their basement. "Corporate Rock Sucks!" was the rally cry This is the stuff at the other end. I suppose Indy Art Rock showed Corporate rock, but what it really did is prove that there's a market for lo-fi songs expressive songs like 'Fantastic Disaster' because what else are people going to do? Surf Insta and create Tik Toks? I'll never completely understand whatever happened between J. Mascis and Lou Barlow. Someone said JM threw a cymball at LBs head during a performance and walked out. I couldn't find any of that online, but I didn't search much 'cause I'm consumed with infinite Tik Tok scrolling.
I had a couple Sebadoh albums (Bakesale and Harmacy) and I have literally never met anyone else who has even heard of them, let alone liked them, so I was surprised as hell to see them pop up on 1001 albums. I also was surprised as hell with some of the sonic chaos on the album. I get that they were all “look at us we are so lo-fi and cool” but why make so many sounds that don’t sound good? Turns out there is a good reason why this album sounds like two different bands, all the songs I like are written by Lou Barlow and all the songs I don’t were by Eric Gaffney who left the band after this album and didn’t appear on Bakesale of Harmacy (if you like the first couple songs, give those other albums a listen). I wish I could give this album a higher rating because the songs I like, I really like, but overall it’s a mess.
All over the place in terms of quality. Had some really well made stand out tracks that I really enjoyed. The low points were pretty uninteresting for me. Would like to listen to it again sometime in the future when I'm not driving.
Heard before: no… …which is weird because I like similar bands as well as Dinosaur Jr. Good album, some great songs but overall didn’t feel very cohesive.
Hm. To compare them to Nirvana is to say nothing. Really liked the second to last song
Pulls from both Folk Implosion and Dinosaur Jr, but I prefer them separately. Opening track "Soul and Fire" is the stronghold of the album.
Fun simple lo-fi indie rock. You can definitely hear the Dinosaur Jr. influence but it does enough to separate itself as its own thing.
This guy definitely played in dinosaur jr
This grew on me, and need to give it another couple of listens. Some real songwriting charm, and the variety is great.
I am not normally a fan of the willfully obtuse lo-fi of the 90s. It often fails to rock. But this record I enjoyed (much more than, say, Pavement, who I tend to think of as the emperor's new music). It fairly often rocks, the tunes are memorable, and the album overall is muscular and thought out. Sometimes it embraces 'weirdness' in a way that reminds me a little of Primus. I am OK with the use of dissonance and/or a failure to tune the guitars. That's OK, that can rock. A pleasant surprise. Would listen again.
Quite liked this, not really sure why I never got big into them way back when. Oh yes, yes I do - remember reading about them in Melody Maker and hearing tracks hither and thither but never actually seeing a single Sebadoh anything in any record shops.
As SUBPOP as SUBPOP will get. There’s a clear sense of the Seattle sound that wasn’t quite grunge. I liked it but I didn’t love it.
Soul and Fire is a great track. Easy 90s rock to listen to. Oh the rest of this album is not great.
Early indie, like a Nada Surf predecessor
Man, I really liked the vibe of this when it started, all schlubby singing and discordant chording. Everything was mismatched in a really compelling way. And seeing that this one is the first they did in a real studio also makes it endearing - I like these albums where a group stretches their muscles and gets a little money behind them. But for some reason this seemed to go on twice as long as I thought it would. It lost me, is what I'm saying.
After two tracks I was ready to write this off as Teenage Fanclub on percocets, but I was wrong. This morphed into a weird, ugly and intriguing beast, spackled with moments of rage and white noise. Awkward, angular and unsettling, it's not a comfortable listen, but it is rewarding.
I've never heard this band but based on the name, I assumed they were some kind of junk hardcore band. HAHA. Nope. Feeling pretty emo and I'm good with that. The distorted power chords remind me of early Weezer, Pedro the Lion, and Elliot. All bands that I love. But, here's the thing with emo. If it didn't hit me when I was an emo teenager, can I still really immerse myself in it? Not really. So I missed the boat, and as a result this is [perhaps unfairly] getting a 3/5.
More enjoyable as the album went along. Surprisingly melodic, and some interesting chord and tempo changes kept me interested. I don’t think I’ll revisit frequently, but it’s a good mid-tier album with a few solid tracks I could see wanting to check out regularly for some listening variety.
Sebadoh are one of those bands that have been sprinkled throughout my play history but never really captured my attention enought o dig into. This album is ok but nothing really stood out.
5/10. They did an excellent job of putting their most palatable song first.
I liked the first song a lot. The rest were hit/miss for me
Not listened to these chaps before but fair play, it sounds like the 90s alright. I guess the manic, discordant tracks are more ‘interesting’ but the tracks with a bit of melody, like Homemade, are more enjoyable. 2.5
Grungy, jangly, noisy, ramshackle collection of songs. The album starts out strong and has some moments of real creativity and fun, but a little dissonance goes a long way. On the whole I enjoyed it, but it really is a lot. Fave Songs: Soul and Fire, Two Years Two Days, Cliche, Happily Divided, Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)
Listened Before? N Pretty good indie record. I'd never heard of these guys before but it seems it's a member of Dinosaur Jr.'s side project. You can't get much more hipster than that lol. I didn't hate it at all. Some parts are abrasive but you have to understand they probably weren't taking it all that seriously. Parts sound like Nirvana without distortion, which shouldn't be a surprise for 1993. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Soul and Fire
decent
Those nerds know their way around a song, yep.
Cheap-sounding short songs that might be your thing, if you like the scrappy-ness of bands like Pavement and Sonic Youth. I'd imagine opinions on this range from "sounds bad" to "sounds good because it's subversive" to "sounds boring despite being subversive" - I'm somewhere between the second and the third I think.
Feels like I’m in early 90s Seattle listening to a cross between Sonic Youth and Nirvana B-sides
ja amk eitt sampl þarna i interludei
Hressilegt indí, smá gröndsj og pönk!
I’m usually a fan of diy indie music but this album just fell a bit flat for me. Maybe I just need to give it a few more listens. I enjoyed the first few songs which seemed to have a haziness to them that I found interesting. The entire middle of the album ran together for me but I did enjoy the last couple of songs.
This seems like a jekyll & hyde album. They switch between a pretty mainstream approachable alternative vibe and then through doses of Sonic Youth across the tracks. Definitely enjoyed Soul and Fire.
Insuportável
Started off really good with with song and then fizzled out
3, abrasive but not bad
Was ok, nothing special, but had some stuff I didn’t expect. Should come back to 5/10
3.6 - These Massachusetts boys were playing near home so I decided to check them out knowing next to nothing about their catalog, except that they were connected to the 90s grunge zeitgeist that I grew up on. But they were unexpectedly cerebral, utilizing non-standard guitar tunings, math-rocky time signatures and strange chord progressions. Towards the end of their set, I had a mild panic attack and had to exit the venue in a hurry because I just couldn't make sense of the music and it was putting me on edge. I'd say this album displays many similar characteristics as I experienced that evening. For me this album is hit-or-miss. On one hand, I love heartfelt ballads like "Soul and Fire", "Homemade" and "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee). But these sweet moments are spiked with cacophony, like on "Fantastic Disaster" and "Elixir Is Zog." I've read that this is a breakup album, and I think the decision to incorporate equal doses of attraction and repulsion, feels true.
alright y'know
I liked half of this, but then it would go a little too far... I can see they were trying to push boundaries but it went from interesting ideas to just unpleasant listening. You can hear where this has influenced a lot of other acts though.
First time I’ve listened to this album and can really hear the influence it has had on a number of subsequent albums. For example the first Snow Patrol record. A little bit patchy and maybe too many songs but has its moments
I don't normally enjoy Grunge. But maybe it's the lofi angle that makes it more palatable than the others.
Good start but then it was kind of generic.
This was simultaneously a weird and completely standard indie rock album. Most of the tracks sound like stereotypical indie rock from the 1990s but every once in a while there's like a screamo song or something which threw me off. Either way, it wasn't bad but not super notable either. Favs: soul and fire, fantastic disaster
Some okay moments
There are some real gems on this grunge alt rock album but it lacks consistency. I get that throw away snippets of ideas is part of the aesthetic - and maybe there is an honesty to that which has merit - but it isn’t as satisfying a listen as other records of the era. This could grow on me.
Ah the lo-fi grunge era. This doesn’t pack the pop sensibility of most of what made the Seattle scene so cool , and certainly lacks the punch that Mudhoney and The Melvins had. Still not a terrible listen. Some of the songs are great. Fav tracks : “Sister”
6/10
Some really cool stuff. And some really meh stuff. It's pretty good. 6/10
Never heard of them before
I don’t like every song on here but I do love enough of them to like this as an album
Angry, punk rock early 90’s. Didn’t grab me.
Different listen
Not so bad
seemed average sound for the era.
I’m not a fan of grunge but their jangly, discordant sound appealed to me. After a first listen I liked it better than their peers eg Pavement, Dinosaur Jr. Very similar to the Eels too in their softer songs. I also like how they slow down/ speed up the tempo for some songs.
