Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Effectively the girl from Ipanema as a 45 minute long song.
Did its thing unspectacularly
Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for this one but as soon as I saw The Girl From Ipanema was on here I groaned inwardly. Still, it was pleasant enough but I'm also glad that it's over.
Never heard but I see it's french-jazz. I'll check it out. Listening to this first track, I have definitely heard this before. Maybe just this track.
If this is 'Bossa Nova' I like it. 90% of the lyrics weren't in English so I can't speak for the songwriting quality, but the saxophone and the bass were both beautiful. An album of just jazz does get tiring after a while, and it is the perfect example of music that I like, but was not made for me. I listened to the original masters as FLAC files at 24-bit 96KHz on the expanded edition of the album. I didn't bother listening to the mono and single recordings featured on the expanded edition as I doubt they sound different enough from the stereo masters to listen to. There is a remastered version of the album available which I will add to my TIDAL collection as both a full album and individual tracks.
never really thought of bossa Nova + cool jazz. girl from ipanema is essential.
Silky smooth selection. Oozes charm and style. Very enjoyable. Added to my list.
Spanish jazz 1964, some english lyrics, not bad
I think it's good for what it is, even if it's a sound I personally do not care for.
Aggressively non-confrontational. The almost perfect baseline.
sympa à ecouter, jazzy
Really smooth
first listen. quite nice but too jazzy for me. I can't imagine myself ever coming back to it.
Really nice easy listening. 4* might be too generous. 71/100, couple of bonus points for Ipanema.
I liked it but conversely didn't find it revelatory or particularly inspired. I suppose it's a product of the time, these days the influence of world music is felt across all genres, it may have been more important when it was released.
Very smooth and lovely music. Horn jazz with some pleasant vocals and great balance of power within the instruments. I find it hard to connect to the music, and it doesn’t really capture me. Objectively it is very beautiful.
Not my favorite
Thought that I already reviewed this one, maybe it was another similar recording, stated that it reminds me of the music my parents listened to when I was a little boy.. pleasant reference, 3 stars.
funny vibe
Was in the right mood for some elevator music.
Very mellow, like the soundtrack to an old movie
The Getz horn solo is really breathy and pronounced… Lost interest a bit after 3 or 4 tracks
great music, couldn't understand em
I really like Stan Getz's saxophone playing. I also like Gilberto's vocals. However, the gentle bossa nova is more suited to a beach with long drinks in summer. I only have that on rare occasions. I had a good time listening to the music. But it's not the kind of music I listen to all the time. 3/4
Smooth
Felt like being in a quant swan boat in Venice on a warm summer evening, steadily cruising down one of the many water-roads. Enjoy
Language barrier. Still good.
If you like Girl From Ipanema, you’ll like this album ;)
Coming across this album and having to listen through the stereo and mono mixes, I couldn't help but ponder a few things; how did this become the standard bearer for all things bossa nova and why did it have the impact it did upon listeners? My guess is that it was to do with the last wave of tastemaking done by older generations not well equipped to handle the rapidly changing scenes that they wouldn't or couldn't understand anyway and its languid, at times lethargic slow groove was more up their alley. Something to throw on when throwing business parties or to seem rather adventurous in tastes when hosting others. Whether the case, Getz/Gilberto is an album that's to be respected and its legacy to be appreciated when applicable, even if it doesn't play towards most tastes. Favorites: The Girl From Ipanema, Desafinado, Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), Só Danço Samba, O Grande Amor.
Good relaxing day drinking on a beach or somewhere warm and tropical. I don't understand the words without translation but that is almost good. Reading the lyrics after listening I did pick up on a lot of the meaning and feelings just by the melody and his emphasis.
idk why sometimes bossa nova annoys me and sometimes it's soothing. it's one of life's little mysteries.
3.5 im surprised i actually liked it
Vocals are often low in the mix, but otherwise a pleasant album.
B- The Girl From Ipanema 3 Doralice 3 Para Machucar Meu Coracao (To Hurt My Heart) 3 Desafinado 3 Corcovado 3 So Danco Samba (Jazz Samba) 3 O Grande Amor 3 Vivo Sohando 3 It'd take an exceptionally long silver spoon up someone's bum to really enjoy this.
Bossa baby
This is the type of music you’d expect to hear in a cruise ship restaurant and I mean that as a compliment.
Nice lounge music, nothing that special about it.
First listen Saved 4/8 Top track: The Girl From Ipanema
Lively, interesting bossa nova music.
Just ok.
It is very relaxing music in a nice way. Wouldn't listen as a main focus personally, but for some background it is very nice. Will I listen to again: 40%
The opening song was very familiar. Overall it was a good album. It was not over the top jazz, and it did not drone on. I do not think that I will revisit it, but it was fine to listen to. I would not complain if it was playing and I heard it again.
Very interesting. Jazz and not English? But I did recognize one which surprised me! Good
This is only relevant for one song, a classic that isn't nearly as good as my grandparents told me it was. Beyond that, it's evocative of a bygone era.
The original Girl From Ipanema. Several ways. Jazzy! Lovely vocals. Coool
The Girl from Ipanema was popular and very familiar to me from back then. I don't choose to listen to jazz, but if I were I would welcome this. Overall good album.
I'm not typically a jazz fan but this was pretty good.
Música de elevador
2.5/5 Good to do paperwork to or maybe cook but not regualr listening
Rating : 3/5
The Girl From Ipanema //
This needs to be heard on the beach instead of a staid office which is where I heard it. It is relaxing and calming music but I do have to be in the mood to hear it. Prefer the songs with Astrud Gilberto singing than Joao.
Really chill, really sweet. Again not my style, but I added a few songs to a few playlists. I can see myself putting it on for cooking or have in the background while working. Made me happy!
.
It’s pretty good.
Mellow
Enjoyed the album but not really a jazz fan so probably won’t find myself going back to it.
Not my style but prob objectively good
Nice soft latin-ey jazz
Nice and tropical lounge vibey, but sleepy
Enjoyable first half smooth easy and fun. First song is a banger. After a whole album. Does get slightly repetitive but an interesting album. Great for chilling. 7
Back in an era of when jazz rules this is some kind phenomenal jazz music. The fun upbeat tempos and high energy brass makes this a pretty solid album. The girl From impanema may be the most popular song in this list as it’s been in other albums before. This album isn’t my favorite but still good. This is a nice and easy listening jazz album. 6.4/10
Well I never thought I’d like this but it was something very easy to work with but didn’t put me to sleep. Surprised that I didnt despise it or even dislike and found myself enjoying it. Definitely a strong 7/10 but not incredible enough to be 4 stars. Would listen again.
Not too bad but kinda sounded like elevator music at times 6.5/10
Yeah, sure, perfectly fine.
A little same-y for me.
Megahitti on kans musta vähän tylsä. Menköön nyt kolmosella.
I only listened to it once - sort of as background music - and it seemed nice. "Girl From Ipanema" is a famous song, of course. I don't have a lot to say about this. I might return to it again at some point.
Only know one song. Very relaxing but not my style.
The original girl from Ipanema! Rest of the album has a very mellow, chill sound, but kind of repetitive. Nothing blows my mind.
In a nutshell: swingin' samba/bossa nova Pleasant, minimalist jazz meets gentle samba. Is it really bossa nova? This is the kind of music you’d hear in a 4 plus star hotel lobby or you would play while cooking dinner. I dig it. Overall: 6/10
Enjoyed this
Obviously Getz is a great player and this album is nice to listen to, but it could do with having a bit more variety in there
Fun, just not really my style.
These song weren't really for me. They set a decent vibe, but most of them felt like nothing. Don't feel the need to listen again.
This is jazzy and relaxing but not really my jam
I'm not familiar with this artist or album, or samba music for that matter, but this has probably been my favorite album from Central and South America that I've gotten to review so far. The arrangements were really nice, especially the horns, and Astrud Gilberto's vocals on a few of the tracks were fantastic. This is the type of album that would be perfect to listen to on a slightly warm Saturday in spring; a day full of sunlight, but a day where you have the freedom to relax and take in everything. This isn't the type of album that I'd normally listen to, but I'm considering getting a copy, because it would be nice to have around.
Decent chilled album with a few nice songs
Good in small doses
3.4/5 Best Track: The Girl From Ipanema
Love the music, don’t like the man’s voice
i really liked the first Getz album on this list so i was excited for this one but i was a little disappointed. not bad but certainly not as good - low 3
Lovely music, very calming, but not my cup of tea.
ok
The Girl From Impanema is an all time classic and one of the best songs ever written. This album however never reaches those heights ever again. The album is alright but gets old pretty quickly
This album makes me want neat bourbon and a cigarette. Highlights: The Girl From Ipanema (both versions), Desafinado, Corcovado
Nice soothing melodies, reminds me of the Girl from Imponena.
Oh hey, that's where the girl from Ipanema comes from.
Slightly repetitive as 100% bossanova BUT could not stop moving the whole time. Elevated elevator music. Saved album
Ah. So this is where "The Girl From Ipanema" came from. A short album with 2 versions of the song.
I get why this album is important, but other than at dinner parries, Bossa Nova puts me to sleep.
A very chill bossa nova album
Lounge/ coffee shop vibe. Relaxing sounds while you make gnocchi or chop veggies in the kitchen. Love the use of different instruments that are still prevalent today in the current sonic culture of Brazil and U.S. Kinda sleepy for me, not mad at it. Prefer something a little more up -tempo, little more percussion for my taste 🥁
🇧🇷 👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾👏🏿 Nice easy listening, very minimalistic if you’re in to that… definitely music to take a relaxing bath to 🧐 First non American album to win a Grammy , so there’s that for historical context. Lots of longing for unattainable love… welcome to Brazilian music 😂 That sax rips tho , and Joao has a nice voice overall, but I need some more percussion for my taste 🥁 tbh, if it wasn’t for the sax, it’d be hard to get thru the whole album as it’s a bit repetitive Overall Feels like a prescribed reading of a classic novel, yes important to place for historical relevance and your better for reading it, as this album launched the bossa nova genre, but wouldn’t be my first pick for bossa (feels played out) which morphed into my much preferred MPB (música popular brasileira). ✌️
ahhhhhh an auditory massage so smooth and silky vanilla beans, swaying palms, warm water, and summer sunshine straight into your ears the epitome of an easy listen...
Everyone needs to lounge once in a while. Probably best to have something better to do than just sit and listen to the whole album though.
Its OK. The Girl from Iponema - of course - is a standout.
I quite liked this album, had a nice instrumental to it
Saxophone is good but the performances aren’t all that stand-out. 3/5
Don’t speak spanish
Pretty same-y sounding. Not a lot of variety. Mixing wasn’t great
Makes me feel fancy. Thought there might be a parade, but no dice. 3.
This is what I hoped the Astrud Gilberto on this list album sounded like.
Good tunes but too repetetive. 6/10
I'm pretty sure this is a third album on this list that includes some version of "A Girl From Ipanema". I have no idea which version is original, but I think Getz/Gilberto collaboration had it recorded and performed in a best way. Otherwise, it's just a solid album with nice lounge songs, pretty fine for a background during a slow and peaceful day.
Getz/Gilberto really reminds me of an album I looked at earlier in my 1001 albums journey called Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim (Jobim is on this record so that could be part of the reason why) The way they are so similar is that the songs are generally very pleasant and relaxing but it drags on for too long as every song simply sounds too similar to each other. I will also never forgive corcovado for tricking me into thinking i was gonna get something slightly different but that ended up not being the case. This album is a 2.5 that i have adjusted to a 3 for this site. Best Song: The Girl From Ipanema Worst Song: Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)
I didn't hate this! Because of its use in elevators, it felt familiar. Definitely a background music situation. Would likely be great at a party. Listened to it in the car. Probably didn't require this level of attention
Fine samba/jazz combo album that makes for an easy, if somewhat dreamy and unengaging listen. Peaks up front with 'Ipanema,' but there are several other great compositions mixed in as well that make this an enjoyable experience overall.
The Girl from Ipanema! Chilliger Classic.
The Girl From Ipanema.
The Girl From Ipanema.
Bossa Nova just isn't really my thing I think, but I can respect this album regardless. The guitar playing is impeccable and the vocals are lush and calming.
Brings you to a tropical and relaxing vacation. Jazz with character and feeling.
not my vibe. on dirait du jazz de salon huppé. probablement une insulte a l'Artiste. 5/10
Made me feel like I was in a cocktail lounge. Very good. Love girl from Ipanema
9/10
Seems like such a landmark for the whole bossa nova genre. Can't believe this album is so old.
Chill and relaxing, but didn't blow my mind. Good background music while I'm working. Felt a bit same-same throughout.
Brazilian Bossa Nova, this album is probably the standard all other Bossa Nova albums are judged by. This version of The Girl From Ipanema is the one everyone recognizes and remembers as THE version of the song. Overall it was a nice jazzy album to listen to.
When there is actual jazz happening via instrumentals I like it, but too much singing and generic bossa nova to have much bite.
Very chill and pleasant. Good background music. Kind of boring.
Jazzy...not bad
Ok, a little too mellow?
One of the Greatest Jazz Combos of all time. Listen the Complexity of a song like "This Bird has Flown" or the Silky smooth Horns on "Come and Get it if you Want It". A Great Jazz Record, up there with Miles Davis "Kinda Blue"
So two Stan Getz albums in my last 10 albums? Come on randomizer, do better. And Desafinado is on both. I still don't care enough about this genre and find myself bored. That may be harsh, but I definitely am not excited. I did finally notice Getz' sax playing on the last song Vivo Sonhando, and he is quite good. But it's still nice background music or the soundtrack playing at a high-end restaurant, nothing more to me.
Chill, divertido.
Laid back jazz bossa nova from Brazilian saxophone and guitar greats. The addition of English language female vocals makes it a lot more accessible and must have contributed to its 2 million selling commercial success. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: The Girl From Ipanema Date listened: 19/11/23
it was alright - I liked the classic Girl From Impanema - and Corcovada and SO Danco Samba. Its a lovely, chill listen, but not particularly memorable.
Getz/Gilberto is a joint album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto. It's a jazz / bossa nova album that popularized bossa nova worldwide and became one of the best-selling jazz albums. Widely acclaimed, this album won Grammys for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical, and was the first non-American album to win Album of the Year in 1965. This album has been certified silver in the UK and gold in Argentina, Canada, Italy, and the US. Funnily enough, the main pair of musicians on this album did not get along in the studio, but they worked through their issues and collaborated on a few albums of bossa nova music. This important piece of bossa nova music or Brazilian jazz is great. It's soft and tender vocals (on some tracks) pair well with the rhythmic guitars, bass, piano, and sax. This is a beautiful album, even if one is not a fan of jazz.
The album shares the same sentimental Girl From Ipanema feel all throughout it, a nice easy listen
Nice, gentle, sax-lead jazz
This album reminds me of an ex's grandma (lovely woman). She loved The Girl From Ipanema and used to hum it a bunch. It's a nice memory. This album is an absolute classic. Getz could really play the sax. Gilberto was a master of everything else. Bossa Nova at its purest. Gilberto's wife, Astrud, is the famous voice on The Girl From Ipanema. She absolutely nails it from beginning to end. They really screwed her out of money on that one.
I don't love jazz but this was alright
Some real smooth yet saucy sax going on here. I’m not mad at it. Best with a piña colada at the all-inclusive resort for one week of the year.
Fine background noise, The Girl from Ipanema so nice they played it twice.
It’s pleasant enough and I’ve always had a soft spot for the sax. Didn’t really work in the dark on the bus coming home from work though
Laid back but also just kind of a bit melancholic and soporific. It feels like they ran out of ideas and just started making random noises.
Not my thing, but good elevator music.
Great sound, but not my cup of tea
Nice!
Bossa Nova halt. Angenehme Hintergrundmusik, aber nichts, was ich mir in Dauerschleife geben will. Girl from Ipanema.
Bossa nova is such a niche genre, not quite sure how I feel about it. Enjoy it in short bursts like this but it has such a particular sound that most songs sound the same. Definitely heard girl from Ipanema before and a few others were recognisable. Like jazz I think it's a music for the right setting and not something I would just pick up and listen to on the commute.
I quite liked this, it was pretty relaxing. It had nice jazzy beats throughout and kept at a good pace. Nothing overstayed its welcome like traditional Jazz seems to. None of the tracks partifcularly stood out of me but I did enjoy "The Girl from Ipanema".
I enjoyed this much more than the other jazz records we've had recently. Not sure if I'll be going back to it too regularly, but was nice in the background. I bet this is played in loads of restaurants and cafes.
Probably shouldn't have listened to right after Judas Priest. Its ok maybe could be setbreak music but it's all the same song. Would make fine music for that sophisticated cocktail party I'm never having
Blind album and artist. I do not know what to think of this album but it feels repetitive and maybe it's cause the non-english lyrics? It sounds great but I'm not feeling it.
First jazz ever! Good to work to, vibey. Probably would only listen to while working
Джаз/босса-нова The Girl From Ipanema - это мем?
The first foreign, non-english album to pop up on this list for me. Ah, "The girl from Ipanema", THE Bossa Nova song; pretty sure this song single-handedly brought ez listening to America. Crazy how cafe music hasn't really evolved much since its inception; this album is from 1964 but sounds like I would hear it in 2023 starbucks, and then think it was written the year before, and be none the wiser. This statement could definitely be viewed positively, making the inference that the album has a 'timeless' attribute to it. Was enjoyable having this on as easy listening to start my work day, drinking some coffee and crawling through work. Again, like 90% of the music on this list probably, I don't love it, don't hate it, would listen to it with no issues if it was in front of me, but wouldn't go out of the way to find it.
Iconic but why is it giving me anxiety lol
Very cool, very smooth, and I can appreciate it but it's just not for me. Best Song(s): Girl from Ipanema Listen Again: Probably not
The Brazilians know how to do jazz. A relaxed album of songs that I would consider pleasant background music.
Swanky smooth bossa nova album. Just gives romantic dinner vibes.
Pleasant. Interested to see ratings since music compared to elevator/lobby music is always shit on, but this is like the original elevator/lobby music
Nice, gentle music
This was pretty nice and mellow. I liked the overall feel to it but some of the songs bordered on creepy. 3 stars.
Helppo kuunneltava. Rentoon hetkeen sopivaa taustamusaa
Nice easy listen. Loved the saxophone throughout. Okay replay value.
3++
Enjoyed the album, bossa nova is always a little boring to me.
I'm sure there's real talent there, just not my speed
Don't listen if you need coffee. Hasn't made me like jazz. Day 1 but I am still in a rut about known songs being easier for me to actually pay attention to. Realized I've been pronounce Ipanema incorrectly. Sax gets murkier in some of these songs (O Grande Amor?) than I have noticed before.
Mellow
Ok
Feels weirdly like walking through a chill french film. (Although actually Portuguese/Brazillian mixed with American jazz).
I mean, wow. I thought I was gonna hate this album after the first 30 seconds, but it is so chill. Great cooking music.
Slightly on the dull side, but not offensive. I think I could have listened to the whole album without listening to it. 2.5*
Delightfully sunny and positive sounding samba. The Portuguese language has an interesting cadence - the natural rhythm of romance languages but with some more slurred and softened consonants. It works well with the music here. Girl from Ipanema of course is the well-known jewel in the crown here.
this album blows. get it? anyway, it's an album that reminds me what it was like shopping at Pottery Barn. When that was a thing. Just lively enough to be adventurous, but not to the point of being distracting.
Great way to start the day. I was like, who is Stan Getz, and then the first song kicked off a mood. Easy, breezy and full of chill vibes all day.
Ooooh, that some smooth sax and bossa nova vibes. Good music to mark to.
jazzy. Relaxing to listen to in certain circumstances, mix of spanish and english lyrics
Bossa nova on itselleni vieraampi genre, vaikka muutamia klassikkobiisejä osaankin nimetä. Tämä menee kategoriaan "mukavan leppoisa taustamusiikkialbumi", en ehkä saa tästä irti mitään sen erityisempää. Ajattelin kuitenkin jättää tämän mukaan taustamusiikkisoittolistakiertoon. Henk.koht. suosikki: Para Machucar Meu Coração.
nice background music.
Too slow, jass samba is better.
Okay
This feels like vacation. Like a warm, salty breeze. Soft sand and palm trees. A lazy brunch on a shaded cafe patio...
I love it. The great thing about this system of rating albums is it introduces you to something you already know; i have probably heard The Girl from Ipanema 5 times in Television on the radio, but now i can put names to faces, and listen to it repeatedly, not just holding shazam up to season twelve of the simpsons or whatever. Easy listening, with a relaxed and unpunishing vibe, for hot summer days.
Really chill
Nice jazz, really chill, but the mumbling at the start wasn’t great.
It gets a little bit repetitive, but I feel that's why it's so charming. Good across the board.
Smooth elevator jazz
This is one of the best background working albums ever made. That's not a slight, just that it does its thing and if you dip out for 5 minutes that's ok, they're grooving and ready for your return.
Relaxing music, very classic, but the songs don’t vary enough to make the album as a while interesting.
Enjoyable but like other music from that time, its hard to truly enjoy it with today's ears
Jazz isn't really my style, but it is very relaxing.
A nice album for relaxing on the beach, but not for trying to stay awake on a road trip
Good
3/8, 38%
Album 101 of 1001 Getz / Gilberto - Stan Gets & João Gilberto Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Girl from Ipanema Great album for either relaxing or going about your business as you listen. Soothing, Relaxing, Pleasant...so many adjectives fit. It also won Album of the Year in1965, the year of my birth. That gets a few points.
This was incredibly easy to listen to and as smooth as butter. The intersection of jazz and samba styles is a great intersection, in my opinion. I don't really have any notes for this album, other than that it was quite a pleasant listen.
Maggie likes it more
Top 3 Songs: 1 - The Girl from Ipanema (1) 2 - So Danco Samba (6) 3 - Desafinado (4)
Ambience for some jazzy 60s music
an album of airy coffee house jazz "young and tan and lovely the girl from Ipanema goes walking" is on this one
Bossanovas tranquilas, de las primeras épocas. Para entusiastas del género. Buenas voces y ritmos tranquilos.
BANE
Another apposite selection. Astrud Gilberto dies and the next day we get this. Bossa nova is a type of jazz I can tolerate. Girl from Ipanema is a great tune. The songs do all tend to blend into each other but it’s very pleasant background music. I will always remember being on a cruise round Norway where the band played Girl from Ipanema seemingly every day on the observation deck. Seemed a bit out of place at the time but it was a very chilled vibe!
Not sure if Astrud Gilberto's recent death was the reason this got served (could be coincidence), but hearing "Girl From Ipanema" made me look that song up specifically as I was curious where the ubiquitous easy listening tune originated. While this isn't the first ever recording (that was in 1962), this was the version that became the international surprise hit and launched Gilberto's career. If I have the story right, she wasn't even credited on the album when it was released, it was her husband Joao who was the star at the time — she was new to singing. Anyway, that song aside, the whole affair is pleasant and would entice me to sit down at a table in a club if I had wandered in and heard this playing. As a must-listen album, it was perfectly OK in the background. The sax sounds a little too wet for my taste, and all in all, sure, I liked it just fine.
On the day that Astrid died I get the wonderful Getz/Gilberto album. ( Astrid is uncredited) that launched her career. Brilliant summer vibes. Shimmering trumpet/piano with salsa vibes.
Like being gently caressed by a warm spring breeze, while bathed in gentle sunlight. Recommend by 3/5 physicians for lowering your blood pressure. 👩⚕️👩⚕️👩⚕️
Feels like the soundtrack to a lazy late Saturday lunch. Great to relax to, not anything I'd usually seek out.
It’s what you’d expect when you see the names but entertains none the less. Classic rendition of Ipanema is a highlight.
Prototyyppi- bossa novaa. Siksi kai se puree
I think everyone has heard The Girl From Ipanema, but not heard of Getz or Gilberto. Getz/Gilberto is perfect for having on in the background at a gathering or a nice restaurant. Definitely not something that I'd often go out of my way to listen to ordinarily. Best: The Girl From Ipanema Worst: O Grande Amor
I feel like I've heard most of this album -- in old 60s-70s movies or coffee shops or more modern movies. There are some songs that are repetitive, and it's mostly easy listening.
Not bad not great. had it on in the background while rebuilding my ipod and was pretty indifferent. Good background music though.
Lovely as background music
I’m meant to hate jazz but this was ok
Nice
This is one of those iconic albums where everything is lightning in a bottle - from Gilberto’s guitar, Getz’s sax and Astrud Gilberto‘s lovely voice. Also there’s the wonderful production and engineering captures the languorous sexy mood. The girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, are of course iconic bossa nova songs that still sound fresh and delightful today
Good vibes but good vibes only. This was 37 minutes of chill out music without any highs or low’s
Very smooth, mellow and calm. Quiet and minimalist.
Another solid Bossa Nova album. Nothing hugely standout here, quite similar to the last one
It's pleasant enough. That's it.
Soooooo chill. “The girl from Ipanema” is beautiful. Gets a bit repetitive by the end of the album. 6/10
It's cool, just not my thing. Very light and easy.
I have no problem with bossa nova, but unfortunately my brain just processes it as pleasant background music most of the time. Favorite track: "Corcovado"
Almost too chill for me but it was a great Sunday morning listen. I like the combo of Getz and Gilberto how they compliment eachothers sounds
The Girl from Ipanema is such a good song. Recognized it from Catch Me If You Can (and I'm sure a ton of other movies/tv shows). Love a solid jazz album.
Jazz brasilero. Muuuuy trancu.
Absolutely on-brand and consistent throughout, but it suffers for me from a kind of uniformity of tone. No tension.
It's fine. Great old Jazz Bossa Nova sound. Just a bit outdated...ya think? Enjoyable for what it is. 3/5
Decent
A few good tunes. I particularly like “Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)” But as a whole album, I think there were better in 1964.
Very nice relaxing album!! Lovely mix of talents and instruments really enjoyed it today!
I listened to this on a stressful morning ahead of a mega day at work. It was really nice to zen out to - I appreciated it. Girl from Ipanema always is just a funny song to me. Like there's something comical about it I think!
Nice and relaxing, put me in a smooooooth mood.
Perfect as background music for learning or reading, quite charming
Mellow and musical jazz. Doesn't require anything from the listener but to sit back and chill.
I mean, this is some really standard Bossa Nova type stuff, and I honestly think I'd lean in the direction of a low 3 here. But nothing was bad at all, just kinda meh.
K.K. Bossa Nova - The sound here is very calm, cool, and collected. it reminds me of some the soundtrack for The Sims 1. The kind of music played at a rich soiree. This is exceptionally made, enjoyed the quick easy listen.
Bossa Nova is a mixture of Brazilian Samba folk music with American smooth jazz influences. And this might just be *THE* Bossa Nova classic. Smooth, ear-pleasing and very accessible music made for total relaxation on a summer evening, preferably in a hammock on a beach, with a coconut in hand and the sound of gently lapping waves in the background. Sometimes this album - and that's mostly due to the sax of Getz - drifts a bit too much into American Lounge music and you feel it might be played in a movie scene where they have to take one of those long 118 storey elevator rides. But it's a very enjoyable warm summer night album nontheless
An album I grew up with and probably heard one time to many, yet the samba does still retain some charm..
So soothing, muy relajante. Pero todas las canciones son iguales.
Nice morning music
Wasn't a huge fan of this one but some cool sax solo's and syncopated lines. The girl from Ipanema was my fav
I liked but it was rushed listen and will definitely listen again good vibes
#album 84 bossa nova.....great for fancy hotel lifts. ಄ album rating: ★★☆☆☆ ಄ number of albums left to review: 1,005 ಄ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 39 ಄ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 16 ಄ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 68
One bossa nova song is baller and powerful. Eight to ten is a bit dry. Truly the disco of jazz if you know what I'm saying Highlights: "The Girl from Ipanema", "Para Machuchar Meu Coracao", "O Grande Amor"
Skipped
Nice saz and smooth but not an album for me
This is the 2nd Stan Getz album I have had on this list, and to be honest it has me questioning why the first album was included when this seems so much better to me. While the other Bossa Nova albums i've heard so far tend to fade into nothing music, this one has enough of a hook to keep me interested. The vocals are great, the brass is enjoyable, a big improvement but probably not something I would actively listen to.
"The Girl From Ipanema" is an all-time classic for a reason, but like other reviewers have commented this one is nice for background music but blends into that background a little too easily. it just doesn't hold my attention enough for active listening; tracks melted into each other and not in a positive way, started feeling like one big way-too-long song around #3 (and i'm very pro-longsong if done well). objectively a great jazzy bossa nova record, subjectively not my cup of tea. i was already waiting for it to be over about halfway through.
★★½
Some sexy sax but I kinda tuned out after a while and it turned into elevator music. I appreciate it, but not my jam
4/10 Smooth, comforting, nice wide sound stage and soft vocals. There's nothing bad in here and the production really makes you feel like you're in a jazz bar. The downside is that this record isn't really adventurous in any way. It just simmers away in a comfortable space without experimenting. I enjoy the retained imperfections which further adds to the live and atmospheric feel, but there's just not a lot of substance so I can't rate this highly. Best track: The Girl From Ipanema Will I revisit?: No
Of course it's another samba album for my last one. This album can fuck all the way off. So much dross and repetitive sounding albums. I could swear that I've had this very same album at least 3 times already (I've just seen this has songs that were on his other albums). It's as if this short lived US dalliance with Samba still has a huge influence on the culture - it's like thinking their obsession with all things Aussie in the 80's makes it so we need to watch all the Yahoo Serious movies. You don't need this and you don't need this on the list. Best Tracks: The Girl From Ipanema; Desafinado; Vivo Sonhando
Swishy mellow jazz with fado style crooning. A laid back lazy Sunday morning sound, it feels flighty and wistful, but listless and melodically aimless.

I think that this album would be nice as background music while I’m doing something else, but it didn’t move the needle for me otherwise.
Not something I’d necessarily sit and analyse deeply, but as a mood-setter it works brilliantly—relaxed, classy, and quietly addictive.
I guess, fine for what it is? But really not my thing. I never need to hear The Girl From Ipanem again, and I've heard it twice in 120 albums.
I'm not a fan of modern jazz or Bossa Nova. This album is high quality, but it isn't enjoyable to me at all.
Slow bossa nova
5/3 Was okay
Not hating it, not feeling it
Easy listening, quite good background music to work to.
Summers background music
So laid back it's almost vertical. A little too much so for me; I'd prefer to be a bit more engaged by what I'm listening to
Favorite Track: The Girl From Ipanema
Latin Sax with Spanish vocals. Not really my jam.
Jazzy jazz...
Most elevatory elevator music I have ever heard in a row. Music itself isn't bad, but I'd rather ride an elevator for a minute or two than 39 minutes. Certainly did not help that the last two songs were repeats.
It's fine, nice historical album, but it's the same song for 50 minutes. Just light jazz.
I dont like it
Astrid's voice is great. Saxophone is brilliant. But Joao is woeful and bassa nova dreadful.
3/10
Yawn. It's a nice song. But they all kind of blend together.
Chill en porrugues
I know it's only jazz and bossa nova but I don't really like it. To paraphrase Mick.
Not really my thing Girl from Ipanema isn't too bad (could listen again (not frequently))
This was like being stuck in a lift or waiting on hold for 40 minutes Would have been better without the vocals
Not my kinda music
Bossa nova isn’t my thing. I can tell it’s good for what it is though
For the workday I'm having, the absolute weirdest album to come up
im not a jazz man
Jazz is really not my thing. I got bored. I can't help but hear it and think "elevator music." Maybe I'm not cultured enough. I'll excitedly await the day I "get it"
