Reviews (page 7 of 7)

We all know why this became famous. However, although I like it's alt folk rock approach, there's not much going on here as demonstrated by the slew of instrumentals at the end of the album

I dont know how you manage to make a punk band album sound kind of bland, but this does it. I can see what they were trying but it just doesnt sound good at all.

Pretty audacious of the author to put his high school punk band’s album on this list. Some of the melodies are good. The singing is done in a style I can’t stand.

Came and went. Didn’t really love the vocals

Interesting sorta experimental album… i wasn’t super keen it on it though.

Very mixed bag

I wanted to like it but I just do NOT vibe with muffled, noisy music. It really gets in the way of my enjoyment of the other aspects of the songs.

90% drasl, 10% þokkalegt instrumental prog-like shit.

Messy, occasionally fun instrumentals and twangy country rock, but mostly messy tuneless kids play. Nothing like Minutemen.

Some things you just don’t vibe with. I can see why someone could like this, just like I could see why someone couldn’t like the Lemonheads album I rated highly. Although, listening to the Lemonheads album as I write this, I think they’ve got a sharper instinct for songwriting, and a better lead singer. Not that I think the Meat Puppets guy’s voice is bad, I’ve willingly listened to worse voices. I think it may be a thing about album structure. I don’t actively think this is bad music at all. I think that there are too many too similarly structured songs too close together. A lot of the instrumental tracks sound a lot like instrumental versions of the songs that came immediately before them. Now that I’ve been introduced to it, I’m sure I’ll go back and listen to the album again at some point, but at the moment I’m not impressed. But as I said at the top, some acts you just don’t vibe with. In terms of early 80’s alt rock, I think Meat Puppets may be the band I just don’t vibe with

Honestly? Barely listenable. There are a couple of nice songs on it, but it turns out Kurt Cobain already heard them and did vastly superior covers of them. The rest is mediocre.

A bit too shouty. Sounds like a worse version of Nirvana to me.

If Pavement did Country punk. It was ok but didn’t resonate with me.

Rather average

I mean, they do their thing. But I’m not into it. I should be, it fits my sensibilities on paper. It’s just not for me. It’s not. I’ve always thought they were very meh and this hasn’t changed my mind one bit.

I've quite literally been to garage parties with better bands than this. I'm sure they influenced whoever and yeah Plateau and Oh, my ended up being fairly good songs when performed by other people, but they really needed to be performed by other people. Why is this on here?

low key punk rock one of the songs is covered on nirvana's unplugged 2.5

Meh did not care for this

Some of the songs are decent, but I wouldn't go so far to say they're good. I guess one good thing is I now have heard where Nirvana covered Lake of Fire from. Honestly, this sounds like a lot of the inspiration for Nirvana.

Fun enough, but just not very good? I think maybe you would need to have some previous experiences with Meat Puppets to be able to fully appreciate what they were doing here.

instrumentals are good, although often seemed awkwardly rushed. Vocals are terrible.

I bought this CD in about 2003 as one of those JB Hi-Fi $7 deals. I felt ripped off. The meat puppets were not a good band - noisy, out of tune, amateur slop. Hard to digest, no real talent. The craziest thing is that this album is a masterpiece compared to the one before it. Overall take home message on this band in general: Kurt Cobain led a lot of us up the garden path. I'm guessing they sent him a thankyou card though. 2/5.

The music was alright but the singer couldn't sing ! Consequently I enjoyed the instrumental elements of the album. That's going to be tough to rate ? I’m going a harsh 2*

I know these guys from Nirvana's MTV Unplugged show. Jesus, this is crazy. A bit too crazy. Not a fan of the vocals at all. Too many throwaway songs, but I enjoyed the ones that Nirvana covered. Sorry to report that I didn't like this. I was going in with high hopes and generally like noise, but I just didn't click with it, I guess. Maybe something to return to later.

Where jaunty country esque with tuneless, flat singing. Noisy. Reminds me of Bright Eyes a bit.

All over the place. Terrible vocals. Here and there some interesting guitar work, but it might as well have been a fluke.

Extremely loose and messy. This is what they were going for, maybe, in which case full marks. This can be great, but most of the songs aren't strong enough to come through for me. Also too much country after I had two straight hours of bluegrass yesterday. Sorry MPs, you're a victim of the algorithm. The songs Nirvana covered obviously are the draw, and it's interesting to hear them. I do really like the end of Plateau here, and Lake of Fire is stretched out, raw, scratchy and crazed. The rest I can leave, ta very much.

Very weird. Some of the lyrics were humorous. The lead singer cannot sing. It is not good. The only upside is the album was 30 minutes. I have no desire to listen to this album again or other songs by the Meat Puppets. It is better than a one but not really a two.

Musically might be a 4 but I've never been able to tolerate the vocals

The first psychobilly album? Perhaps. There are streaks of lovely jangly melody in this, along with some amusing lyrics. I largely found the instrumental tracks more arresting. Perhaps a second re-listen will garner more than my tentative initial two stars.

Another "why is this on here album", sounds like they tried to mimic the doors or something and this is an AZ band, not UK but I didn't latch onto anything.

Severe inconsistencies in quality between tracks. The first and only time I've heard of the Meat Puppets was in Nirvana's Unplugged album. Listening to this album now, I can see why I managed to live my life without them thus far and will surely manage the rest of my life the same.

Kurt Cobain sure liked this band a whole lot more than I do.

Plateau, Oh Me, and Lake of Fire. Maybe I heard it mentioned at some time when Nirvana was hot, but really had no idea this was MPs as I just think about Nirvana when I hear those songs. They must have had a huge influence on Nirvana. I understand MPs did get to play with Nirvana some. This version of Plateau stands out and the guitar is outstanding in the middle. Guitar in Aurora Borealis is similarly outstanding. A strong weird track. Songs like New Gods and I'm Not Here are just too busy for me-- like a frenetic Zappa song with no sense of humor. Teenagers smells like Sonic Youth a touch. A lot to like here but also some filler and things that don't work for me.

I didn't get it, and I think that is because the band members themselves do not get it either. The songs are not bad, but this looks like much more a demo EP to show off the different styles the band can perform than a coherent album. I don't think that every album must be organized, and I'm into some experimentalism, but it should at least looks like an album rather than a found lost tape that the band forgot in some studio in the 80s.

Whenever I see some discussions about more or less any American alternative band, there's always some yank praising them as the greatest thing ever, them being unreal live at this and that date in this and that city and whatnot. Then you actually listen to their material and it's some shite like this. According to Wikipedia, their first album was more akin to noise rock, which I probably would've been a lot more into, but this was one of those albums on this list that actually made me upset. Just intolerable. Never trust a yank when it comes to music.

kinda bad didn't like it

The instrumental songs are fine, but god those vocals suck. 1.5 stars

i'm all confused throughout the entire record because it keeps going from an agglomeration of things i hate the most ("plateau" is a perfect example) to things i somewhat enjoy a little bit (honestly, on it's entirety, only "aurora borealis", sometimes other instrumental tracks in part). obviously, scarse ok parts do NOT nearly make up for the horrendous huge bits. sometimes it combines ok instrumentals with terrible vocals (i'm totally OK with singers who can't sing at all, but if it doesn't land it does not land) and i'm left almost mad the track was close to being listeanable. it also left me clueless as to which i hate more: the rock or country music stereotype. i think one redeeming quality which is just really a detail is how this somehow emanates this amateur vibe, coming from a not big hit band and how it being here gives highlight and importance to smaller groups (or at least what feels like it, also given by the fact it's one of the least streamed on spotify so far in the list), but even this fact makes me kinda mad thinking about how many hidden gems made with much less are sooo much better than this and will remain uncovored. what is it about THIS that is the chosen one? so sad. this record gave me a hater day and i hate it for that above all

Pretty awful. Kind of figures that Kurt Cobain was a fan!

Some sort of weird proto-grunge bullshit. Must have been well received when the rest of the world was listening to bands like Ah-ha and Duran Duran 🙄

I only know Meat Puppets from Nirvana covers. Their music is different, but I'm not sure why it made this list unless it was because Nirvana loved them? The music might be ok, but the vocals on some songs are grating. Favorite track: Aurora Borealis

I do not get this album!

This guy should stick to ... not singing. Ooh burn, get burned (1.3/5) Appropriated from other reviews "Not only do I hate this but I dislike anyone who likes this" And "Like being stuck at a party with an annoying know it all who thinks that they’re much cleverer and edgier than they are. Or talking to an ‘artist’ who has no clue, and turns out they’re a real estate agent"

I don't think I'll enjoy anything named "Meat Puppets"

Only found 1-2 tracks worth the listen

still not my thing

me no like. not my tipe

Loved the music but not the voice…

Just don't have the patience for this craic (or rather lack thereof).

No... no....no....

Huhhuh, olipa melkosta kamaa, sillee ei hyvästi sanottuna. Kamalaa laulantaa. Jotain happorokkia. Hauskaa kitarointia siellä oli välillä. Mutta ei mene jatkoon mitenkään.

Too Long

Not for me. 1/5

Nein! Nein! Nein! Cover, Sound, Gesang, passt alles nicht!

Nope. Only 2 songs worth listening to, both instrumental, and even those are not that good. Aurora Borealis and 100% of nothing. Any songs with the vocals, just terrible! The guy can't sing. Who bought this $h*t?

urgh . . . nooo!

yeah….. the nirvana covers were better

Can't believe people like this guy's voice

Was just gonna be like "oh, this isn’t for me" but Lake Of Fire pissed me off. How the hell did Nirvana take that mess and make it sound good? I wish I never heard the original. This album is BAD

Sort of shit I've come to expect from American crap bands.

This is a great album????

I immediately forgot about this album as soon as I finished it.

This was a horrible listen. Shame a great band name was wasted on this one

3/11/26 - listened while walking the dog and driving to golf. I didn’t really like it and am very interested in knowing why this made the list. Debated between 1 and 2 stars. The Nirvana covers were the highlight but only because I knew them, and the originals are much worse than the covers. Top Songs - uhhhh

Not for me

It was always going to be difficult to follow “Rumours”. I’ve never heard of the Meat Puppets and I tried to be open minded but found the album disjointed lacking any musicality. Glad to get to the end

I'm not sure if this is even music.

not for me. the fast beats did remind me of the south park theme song lol

yikes voice is just not good; honestly a 1 for me

This is ear destruction

Never heard about them and now listening the álbum, I can confirm It was better when i didn't knew them.

I’m sorry this was a tough one for me

no thanks

i did not think i could like meat puppets less

Yeah no. This one was not good. If you like chaotic, out of tune, rough and all over the shop then maybe this is for you... but this certainly wasn't for me. I'm sure there are albums that fit the same description that I'd enjoy, but this one didn't redeem itself in other ways at all. Not my bag, sorry.

Some cool guitar parts, but hate the vocals. Would never in a million years have been on this list, or remembered past the year 1984 if it wasnt for Kurt Cobain.

I don’t like this at all. Truly in the top 3 worst albums I’ve heard thus far. I almost cut the album off within the first minute of Split Myself In Two, but I’m determined to listen to the albums in their entirety. Even when it’s pitifully bad. There’s not an ounce of rhythm nor tactful pitch in the singing or the organization of the songs. It’s just chaotic garbage. 🗑️

Prior to this my only knowledge of Meat Puppets was through Nirvana covering them. The vocals are shocking which makes the instrumentals a relief, even though they are hardly brilliant. Plateau, oh no and lake of fire are obvious standouts (despite the vocals) but i suspect my opinion is distorted on these by the Nirvana covers.

The highest compliment I can give is it had a lot of instrumentals, and I hate instrumentals as a rule. But the vocals were intolerable and out of tune, the band seemed - miraculously - to be both behind AND ahead of the music most of the time… it was just a total mess.

Well this is shouty. And also sort of initially sounds like a group of people having their own individual panic attacks while performing. And then goes a bit country. And then I recognised a song from a Nirvana Unplugged cover. And then we're back to a (new to me) dissonant guitar-noodling instrumental. It's sort of impressive to make an album that's so weirdly eclectic, and yet I don't really like any of it. I really debated the score here, because this absolutely isn't as offensive to me as other albums I've scored 1/5, but I didn't like the music that much and hated the singing. My only thing that really pushes the score a little is that the songs were mercifully short, and that doesn't get you a full star of recognition. A regrettable, not for me, 1/5

I really couldn't get into this and couldn't really put my finger on why. My favourite songs tended to actually be the instrumentals as I wasn't a fan of the vocal style which feels a bit hypocritical as someone into a lot heavier music with even more questionable vocals in some people's eyes.

Okay, I have heard Nirvana cover Plateau, Oh, Me, and Lake of Fire, but it sounded better. What a trip back to my youth! It is very hard to listen to this guy sing off key, but it somehow makes the songs more interesting to listen to. I can't decide if I like it or hate it.

Nope. ⭐ Hated it

It's a no from me on the vocals. Big no. This was awful. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐: Hated it.

Cacophonous

Plagsomt

What an adventure. Not bad.

Hey harry, you wanna hear the second most annoying sound in the world? "Plays this album"

Wow it has been a while since my last 1

garbage

pek begenmedim malesef

# Playlist Track - Magic Toy Missing # Notes - Didn't like a single song. Can't believe this, but I'm too old for this. - It's shapeless, formless, but not in an interesting way where you can explore and detach. It's noisy, annoying and with very very poor vocals. Sometimes the guitars are cool. Sometimes.

I hate this

The annoying untoned voice is definitely a choice.

Truly terrible. The first track sucked so bad, i could’ve scored it right there. But i pressed on, not wanting to be too hasty. Now I want the extra 12 minutes of my life back. The bass sound is atrocious. Only the vocals are worse. Who allows such music to go into wide distribution? A 1 for the ages.

Not for me

Have a day off will ya

I cannot take this seriously

Well, I must admit it was not an unpleasant experiencia, but won't listen again. Well, no, just finished the album. It was a bit unpleasant many times. New Gods, bof. Well, everything from New Gods.

First learned of this the same way most people did, via nirvana unplugged. So I got this on tape and was disappointed. Re listening for the first time in a long time and it’s still disappointing

I don't know the band. Very grungy sound and poor vocals. Not a fan.

whiny old punk? kinda crappy annoying

An interesting combination of punk rock, psychedelic music and southern vibe, resulting in a terrible mess that was not supposed to come to light at all. Few nice solos, but it wasn't enough to lift the album from the hole, or crater even. Never again.

Waste of time.

Boring

Sounded like somebody took their moody teenager to a karaoke bar and made him sing country songs in front of his classmates.

I only liked one song that had no vocals

Ganska wack!

1 por que no esta en Spotify.... :(((

I'm sorry but my stomach can't handle the band name

Demasiado ecléctico, no llegas a saber que demonios estás escuchando.

Fuck you

Nah fuck this, im turning it off, even though it is so short. The vocals are just too annoying and cringeworthy. Just listen to Nirvana’s unplugged instead. Don’t pretend that you like it, don’t be a pretentious asshole.

Rough..

Yeah, no. No clue why this is on the list.

not my thing.....

Not my cup of tea

Yeah, the Meat Puppets have never been my favorite and the 3 songs they allowed Nirvana to cover don't sound as good when they do them, sorry. :-/

1. tuuo - 1 2. magic - 1.5 3. lozt - 1 4. plateau - 1 5. aurora - 1 6. here - 1 7. climbing - 0 8. godz - 0 9. me - 1 10. fire - 1 11. idiot - 1.5 12. zong - 0 13. teenager - 1.5 14. here - 1.5 15. godz - 1 16. lozt - 1 17. do - 0 18. nothing - 0 19. aura - 1

1 ok track. Did I miss something

Rough. Guitars aren't bad, but sounds like bad karaoke. Nirvana's covers are better.

Not sure what this was, but I knew my uncle CK was a fan for some reason. For me...this ain't it!

Did not finish

This album is definitely not for everyone. The main vocalist is constantly straining his voice, and the instrumentals are highly discordant for most songs. Very difficult listen. One star because the lyrics are clever.

Intentional crap or whatever. There are bands that do this kind of stuff way better and much more subtle. Just because someone detuned a guitar and sang out of tune does not make them rebellious or anti. It is consistent, but consistency is not what creates good music, it is what would propel a good record to be a better. In this case it makes a crappy record a bad one.

I just can’t buy into whatever this is selling.

Meat Puppets? Muppets?

I don't get it. I like Nirvana though and this is one of their big influences

Casual garage rock with a lot of that monotone and painful male singing voice which I really dislike. Violent Femmes-esque. Songs like lake of fire are just kinda ass, idk Leaning 1/5 The instrumental tracks are superior and not bad

Ist mir zu hartrock

Its too country for me to like :( Has a couple good songs but nothing I would ever want to reach out for

Meh. Sounds like amateurs with no clear vision.

What this album lacks in lyrical depth it also lacks in vocal quality. If you’re ever having a really good day and want it to get a little worse, go ahead and listen to this album 3 times consecutively.

not a big fan

No disponible en CR

Not for me

Up there for the worst vocals I've ever heard. Points for originality (I guess) but the lyrics are largely indiscernible and the music is dissonant in the worst way imaginable. Listened to: at home.

Way better when covered by Kurt Cobain.

Reminded me of Rick and Morty, if Morty needed to put together an album to ward off some type of alien. But I wish the guy could sing because the guitar was good, instruments sounded good, but I was not a fan of the lyrics nor the voice.

Tried to like it, or at least be OK with what it’s supposed to be. But … nope. Let’s intentionally sing very badly to make a point? Hard pass.

O M G How did this make it on the list?

This is bloody awful... its like country v's punk on a full blown drug infused bender of bonkers moany vocals to random instruments played in an unconnected miander for a few minutes... and hey guys... we nailed it... that sounds awesome??? Thanks for giving me this crap to listen to... yet another album I wish I'd never heard.

Awful, they should never let this guy sing again

Rock n roll..not my genre

Mmm... CowPunk No thanks.

The album starts off splitting themself in two, which is what anyone with ears should do with any physical copy of this media they were to come across. The one saving grace of this album is "Plateau" with its steady pacing and commentary on the climb we make in life; the constant struggle to reach greater heights with the promise of something better at the top. Hence, the "Plateau". Most of the album is quite different from this song, and is likely not worth your time. The vocals are of poor quality overall, though I feel they utilized their strengths in "Plateau" and is more than passable. That said, there are a few decent instrumentals scattered throughout if the overall style is something you enjoy. "Aurora Borealis" is rather unique and stands out on its own. Give Plateau a listen, and pretend it's an EP.

Just bluegrass/country but the twist is the band usually does hardcore so the bluegrass/country has hardcore instrumentals and vocals.

Rock - not really ..... country - not really ..... ballads - not really. Not in the 80ties, not newer works ..... Singer out of tune. I don't understand, why this album is in the 1001's. W H Y ???

I hated every second of this. The vocals were dragged on, mopey, horrible and just painful to hear. I hated all of it and the fact their influential is horrifying.

"...it was merely a 2 word review that just said....'Shit Puppets'...." 2/10 1 star

The seems like it is at a 2x speed and the vocals are just not melodic at all

Very strange mix of musical styles from a band I'd never heard of before today; Wikipedia gives their music genre as Cowpunk, Psychedelic Rock, Bluegrass, Folk, and Americana - they seem to be as confused as I am! Dreadful album.

wtf is this

A 48 minute album that felt like two hours with no redeeming qualities

felt i was listening to a inside joke i was not aware. Is the guy singing out of tune something people enjoy?

So, I take it this is comedy. Or at least ironic?

Truly an awful album. Some of the worst singing I’ve ever heard. The only halfway decent songs are the ones covered on the Nirvana Unplugged album (and much better there because Cobain could sing at least a bit). Hard not to think this is on the list only because Cobain loved them for whatever reason. I love Lake of Fire but even that doesn’t save this from being one star, sorry.

The lead singer is tone deaf

really bad

Did not enjoy

Meat puppets- This was a tough one. plateau has some interesting stuff I guess. Tempos are all over the place There could be some cool guitar and bass stuff its super sloppy sounding - I might like a better version of this but for the most part it was not enjoyable. Vocals are terrible. Punk / alternative country vibes. Lake of fire - I knew the famous Nirvana version from the Unplugged was a cover but didn’t realize the meat puppets wrote the original. I’ve tried to listen to a few times but it’s super challenging.

One of my least favorites so far. Really bad.

Was it not necessary in the 80s to be able to sing?

First album so far that has felt out of place on this list. The frontman's voice was shakey and funny at best, god awful at worst and usually the latter. Poorly mixed, guess they didn't care about that though. Made me feel like I was trapped in some cook out in Nebraska, probably blind drunk and lost (perhaps that's what that song was about). I'm A Mindless Idiot was the stand out. Good intricate folksy blues that. Definitely helped that there was no singing involved. Read they influenced Nirvana which is fair enough, but that doesn't mean it's good. Couldn't help but want to TURN THAT NOISE OFF. A first solo dolo star.

It has to be done

This album is on the 1001 list but Exmilitary isn’t. In the words of Liz Truss, “that is a disgrace!”

this fucking blows I like "Lost" and "What To Do" The style of shitty music really benefits those specific songs. I kinda like it. 1

I enjoyed "Plateau" for its symbolism and for being more sonically pleasing than the other songs on the album in my opinion. Altogether, the rest of the album was a complete drag to get through and I hated it.
