Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Very punky. Hectic sounds. Maybe could listen when ordering the house. Did not like it much, just a few songs.

I understand the importance of using some of their punk dissonant noise, but I was not very into it, mostly for the vocals. Guitar and drums are probably the best part of the album, but not enough to make it a top.

It was ok. I liked the variety but it wasn’t anything special.

Not my favourite.

Kinda drifted with this one, instrumentally there were some nice moments but not too big a fan of the voice

This album to me feels loose, intense, chaotic and all over the place. The instrumentation is very good and tight. I don't like the signing, I find it very whiny at times and very hard to get used to. I prefer the lower register singing as I feel it suits the music better than the high register. I enjoyed the blend of hardcore/punk with country/hillbilly... what an odd album. Nirvana covered three of their songs on MTV Unplugged live, Plateau, Oh Me and Lake of fire. I tend to very much prefer these covers rather than the original ones. Overall I ended up enjoying the instrumental tracks the most. My favourite songs are Aurora Borealis, We’re Here, Teenager(s).. but it’s not something I’d ever re-listen.

IDK man. Who knows what this album wanted to be. Why did it have to start loud and then mostly become vibey instrumentals.

Lyrics I can barely hear combined with thin, dissonant scoring = not my thing

Didn't do much for me.

I liked when the southern charm came out but there was too much MOR alt stuff for me to truly enjoy this

Tough to listen to. I get where they influenced bands that came later, with the obvious Nirvana link. But the music just isn’t well produced

Not moved one way or the other tbh. Probably genre defining but didn’t care much.

Cowpunk, can’t sing

I didn't mind it. I got some mild Nirvana vibes from it. Not something I'll listen to again.

This is ok as filler music for a psych rock playlist, but that's about it. Nothing really clicked with me.

The whiplash I felt! I saw the first genre listed on Wikipedia was cowpunk. The first song certainly was punk, and when the country and bluegrass sound came through, I truly understood what the cowpunk genre meant. Meat Puppets II straddled themselves between genres well. When one song was more punk, the next picked up the country vibe. I found myself impressed how they effortlessly merged two genres that aren't ever combined. But other than that, the vocals were fine and the lyrics flat. I would've thought the other aspects of such an unusual album would be, well, not so poor, but here we are.

Wasn’t for me. Didn’t like the vocals, and a lot of the songs lacked substance. I will say that there were a lot of interesting sounds throughout the album. It definitely wasn’t a boring listen. I think it has its place on the list, but I just didn’t groove with this one.

Magic Toy Missing was pretty cool. Then the album sucked again.

Instrumentals were good, otherwise not great.

Music good, vocals bad

I don’t get it.

Indie Rock before that really was a thing. But that's not a compliment, as it didn't forsee everything that's great about the genre, but rather focuses on the bland and uninspired aspects. Musicianship is above average, but the two bis S aren't there, at all: Songs and Singing. Thus, it's a rather dull affair. 2/5

Mid. I did not like the leads voice at all.

Well that was god damn weird. Schizo genre post punk? This album doesn't feel like it came out in 1984 and would better fit in the 90s. It also must have been Kurt Cobain's favorite album as the only songs I recognized on here were covered during Nirvana's unplugged sessions, which is why I am giving it the ranking I did.

we’re all just meat puppets aren’t we

Not really sure what this was. Very strange experience.

kinda only significant for the song that nirvana covered

This is nothing special. A few good guitar songs, but the vocals are so off-putting, I can't give this more than a 2. Disco is more relevant to music than whatever this is. 2/5

Surprising. Not what I expected. There were moments that I really enjoyed, and then others that I didn't. Cool to hear how it influenced Jeff Tweedy.

Better than I expected. But still not what I would classify as good. It did have a solid country rock vibe. Probably liked it better than I should because I had just listened to Captain Beefheart.

It sometimes sounded like the singer was performing a different song to the rest of the band. I generally preferred what the band were playing.

Not very good.

Las instrumentales eran lo mejor del album

The vocals are atrocious, and the playing is often sloppy. Thank God for the instrumentals, they're the best songs musically anyway.

Interesting to hear this album after listening to Nirvana's Unplugged album, as so many iconic songs from that performance come from this album. Still- I wouldnt say I really enjoyed it. The Meat Puppets definitely have a unoqie sound- a mix of punk, alternative, and psychedelic rock. There were good songs that were catchy enough, but were a little too rough (especially the vocals). Overall- probably 2.5/5, not quite a 3

Welp, I was hoping that this album would show me Meat Puppets was more than just "Backwater" and "Lake of Fire". But...it just was not my favorite.

Quite an interesting but strange album. Thought it was ok,but don't think I'll be checking anything else out by them

Meh. 2 Stars

Remarkably forgettable.

Weird to hear traces of country in rock. Found it a bit too sloppy, and I didn’t quite like the vocals. An interesting mix, but not for me.

Do not recommend playing if you're trying to have a relaxing bath.

Music ok but vocals awful

Liked the instrumental only tracks but that’s about it

Oh, Me //

Thoughts on this album: “Man, this really sounds a lot like Nirvana.” Then I realized Nirvana covered several songs from this album on their MTV Unplugged performance. Honestly, I think Nirvana’s versions are better. Overall, the songs were generally okay. “Lake of Fire” and “Plateau” stood out, probably because of their recognition through Nirvana. However, I just couldn’t get past the vocals enough to fully enjoy the album. A somewhat strong 2 stars.

grunge, alternative

Instrumentals are great but can’t stand his voice

Not a fan of punk, screaming metal

It's ok...

I expected more based on the awesome album cover + name combo

This album had no idea what it wanted to be. So many genres and it does almost none of them well. Any halfway good instrumentals were overshadowed by how awful the singer is. The best songs were the ones where he didn’t open his mouth.

This album was trying to do several different things at once and I dont think it was successful at much. I wanted to like it, but it didn't leave an impression on me.

unfortunately i did not dig this at all. two flops in a row. sad!

Meh The singer is quite monotone Some cool guitar riffs and drums here amd there but overall quite average

Sorry, this is rubbish, despite the Nirvana covers. The "singer" is anything but, the drums are amateur level, and the guitar work is just above average.

p515. 1983. 2 stars. Some good songs and guitar playing let down by truly dreadful singing.

Feels a little Beck-like, especially the singers voice, Southern California easy listening.

can’t really go wrong w this kinda psychedelic rock shit, i like the diversity in this album tbh but its nothing special, i enjoyed oh,me and lake of fire those banged, some of this album is lowkey giving radiohead, why are there songs named the same thing

A love letter to ADHD.

2 estrelas :-(

This was alright. Instrumentation and instrumental tracks i liked, but the singing and songwriting fell flat. Somewhere between 2 and 3 stars for me, was pretty grating at times.

You know... not a fan.

First 30 second I was out but I persevered and turn out it was good in parts.

This would hit different if I didn't hear Kurt Cobain perform these songs better

This varies from bland to mildly annoying. The singer has a rather irritating voice. Musically, it has some decent parts, but as a whole, it didn’t work at all for me.

Yeah it tracks that Kurt Cobain liked these guys. I liked the instrumental songs enough but that’s pretty much it

Not good. There were a couple songs that were okay but apparently they’re bonus tracks. I’m all for bad singers but Curt and I seem to share a range. Also the guitarist seems to be trying to find the right note and tune mid recording.

The vocals are wavering and out of tune at times. It doesn't help that the bare-bones production often highlights the flaws and occasionally sloppy playing. The country-inflected numbers stick to predictable chords and are largely forgettable. On such a short album, the numerous instrumentals (such as "Aurora Borealis") seem like lost opportunities. The frenetic singing on faster-paced tracks like "Split Myself in Two" and "New Gods" unfortunately reduce the vocal melody to a blur. However, the perfectly-paced "Plateau" pulls everything together and is the highlight of the album; the fleshed-out arrangement really does the song justice.

I don’t like the mix on this the vocals were unintelligible

This actually sounded kind of fun at times. 2.5

1.5. Vocals not my thing.

O indie antes de existir o termo!

I’m gonna be straight up. For the most part, I didn’t really like this album. It felt a little too janky and messy most of the time, and didn’t really bring joy to my ear flaps. There were definitely occasions where this changed, and it was generally when it started getting a little rockabilly. Overall, I’m honestly not sure why this is considered an essential listen. It certainly isn’t as far as I’m concerned, but if you disagree then I’d love to hear why.

They received the two because there were a couple of songs without them trying to sing. They can’t sing!!

Well that was different, and what an opening track! I mean, why did they bother? Thankfully after that they did actually make an attempt at playing music, and he proved he could sing if he wanted. Have never appreciated this type of guitar work, and only Velet Underground have ever made tracks where it sounded correct. It did improve massively after the opener (not difficult), but not enough for me. 2

Lo-fi, as expected from the SST label in the 1980's. Meat Puppets were on my radar, but never in my collection. I was too busy listening to their label mates Screaming Trees. That said this wasn't too bad, but you can hear their influence in many bands that followed them. It's a 2.4, just not enough to get it to the other side for a 3 star.

like an angry sock monkey. catchy beats but nigh incomprehensible lyrics or vibes. Would not recommend. 2 stars at best.

Singing badly as a stylistic choice is bold, wrong, but bold. if it wasn't for that I may have liked it - it's a bit of a different sound and there's certainly something interesting about it. I just wish the singer wasn't in it

Short-ish, although it didn't feel that way. I really enjoyed the Stones cover, and think this summed up this album well. I was expecting something much more punk, but this was mostly slacker / stoner indie rock fare. Not one I am likely to revisit, save possibly the aforementioned cover.

The singer is the worst part of this band.

I was disappointed with this album, it felt disjointed throughout and never really caught a groove. Maybe that’s their goal being grungy punk vibes?

The Meat Puppets songs were my least favorite ones on the MTV Unplugged album. I liked Aurora Borealis though. Lake of Fire was not great. Overall not much going on on this album. High 2.

4/10 - idk I wasn’t paying that much attention. Also I listened to this album like a week ago and idk what I was writing. I think one of the songs was just yelling

Eh, well, best song is the nirvana cover

The best songs were the ones without vocals. The singing was horrendous. I had to go outside and listen there to make sure my neighbors did not think I was hurting my cat. It should be a 1 star, but the music itself wasn't too bad. It was pretty good, actually, just completely ruined by the singing.

Enjoy the psychedelic parts of this but way too up and down for me

Nothing memorable for me here although I appreciate it for what it is

Someone shoulda told him to stop singing.

Not a fan. It had its moments musically but this guy’s voice is too grating. I will not be returning to this.

I was trying to put my finger on where I’d heard of the Meat Puppets before and it all fell into place after hearing Lake Of Fire which Nirvana covered (I didn’t recognize Plateau or Oh, Me). They’re not really my cuppa tea. I’m giving them a 2, but it’s on the higher side because I quite enjoyed I’m A Mindless Idiot.

Going from punk to bluegrass in the opening of this album was certainly a choice. Kind of represented just how all over the place this album felt. Oh, Me felt like the best song on the album, but that was about it for me. Don't have it in me to give this a 3. 2 stars.

Nirvana cover was better

A few great tracks, more than a few not great tracks

nirvana covered a couple of their songs and tbh i liked nirvanas covers better.

First listen. Nah.

Very short, very okay to listen to once and then never remember it again

Only liked Aurora Borealis and Aura Borealis

Ikke lige mig

I had higher expectations for this, but I just didn't like it. Lot of Nirvana mentions, well no. Their demos even sound better

2/5. Not great. Too jarring and disjoint.

Oh yeah, it’s those songs I don’t really like from MTV unplugged. This has an interesting DIY, punk, garage-band feel to it, with the weird bluegrass and country influences. But it’s not that enjoyable for me to listen to.

Felt like this was trying to do hundred things, most of them poorly. Didn’t enjoy the vocals, too chaotic

Kind of a meh album. Instruments were pretty cool but not a fan of the singer. I knew I recognized Plateau and Lake of Fire but it turns out its because Nirvana made them popular

Didn't care for this one.

Another dreadful waste of space on the list, with an extra star earned for a nice instrumental moment or two.

My expectations were low for a band called meat puppets. Their instrumentals were fun and unexpected. All was more country than expected. The singing was awful. 2* Highlights: magic toy missing (because it involved 0 singing)

This was a bit of a weird and unexpected listen. The songwriting and music is all over the place from Meat Puppets. From initial vibes it is a bit of a turnoff, but once the album gets going its clear there is something more to it. Meat Puppets are somehow able to blend a weird synergy of raucous noise and lyrics into something competent. The vocals are a mess both in terms of style and lyrics, but sometimes they work. Overall it kinda feels like the best version of when one of your wasted stoner friends starts messing around on a guitar and every now and then something decent comes out of it. I can understand how this wouldn't be someone's cup of tea, but for 29 minutes I was mildly intrigued. My only prior awareness of Meat Puppets was Kurt's reference on the Nirvana unplugged album. After now hearing the source material I have a new respect for those tracks both in the way of Nirvana's performance and the Meat Puppets originals. It's clearly highlights how Meat Puppets assembled some decent music that with a little fine tuning and a different approach could have been something really special. A little hard to put a rating to this one because I'm a little torn on how I feel about it. On the one hand its pretty annoying, but on the other hand its also kinda fun. 2.23 stars

Man this album sucked. Terrible singing though the instrumentals were fine. 5/10.

Nothing stands out here other than Lake of Fire 1001 album worthy: No - 13/27

Very interesting. Just last week I had Nirvana’s MTV’s Unplugged album, which features three Meat Puppets’ songs. Without Nirvana, no one has even heard of these guys. There’s a reason for that. I’ll give them credit for some decent ideas that were executed poorly.

Rubbish

Try hard

Album was annoying. Listened to it at work, and it made my day longer. I can see a lot of newer whiny stuff that may draw inspiration from this, but a lot of those newer bands can sing better.

# 373 : An album which makes you reconsider whether there are as many as 1,001 albums you must listen to before you die.

It was pretty chaotic, but not the good kind of chaos. I didn't enjoy it

Only one song really hooked me the whole time. "Lake of Fire" was great but the rest was okay.

Just terrible.

trash but fun trash

Muppets.

I like the music but not the vocals

Don't like his voice. Some instrumental tracks have a nice sound though.

The singers voice is too whiny and high pitched, I love punk so I had high hopes for this album.

How to ruin some otherwise decent music with some terrible vocals 101. It's no surprise then that the instrumental-heavy second half is better than the first half.

Okay nothing special imo 4/10

#366. So we're going to listen to the Meat Puppets. It's not the album with Backwater on it, which is the only song by them anyone likes, but it is the one with that Lake of Fire song that Nirvana covered at their MTV Unplugged concert. I always thought that cover sounded bad, but let me tell you what, the original sounded way worse somehow. Geez, wtf? I get the feeling when listening to a lot of Nirvana's music that Kirk O'Bane is trying to sound intentionally bad sometimes, and now I see that he's just trying to sound like his favorite band, the Meat Puppets, who were just accidentally bad. 2/5: shit

Favourite song - Aurora borealis

Never heard of this group. Casual research reveals that they never charted in the UK or toured. I’m sure some hip UK DJ may have championed them at some point but never to my attention. Having listened to them it’s pure Americana rock which I doubt could be made by any non US bands. I expected Nivana type grunge but more like yee haw hillbilly on speed. Some good guitar but heavily spoilt by warbling lead singer. 2/5 26/9/24

Decent with some random yelling. Had never heard of them.

Good as long as they aren't singing

Why interesting?

This is testing me. Songs are short, nothing grabs on me, the vocals annoy me and it feels all over the place. Maybe it’s just too raw for me to get it. AND this is my second listen of Meat Puppets II, I liked it even less now. Somebody is pulling a cruel prank right now. 2 stars.

Bah, this could have been interesting with the sort of punk, sort of bluegrass vibe, and some of it was. But the awful, awful vocals. Why? And then even the instrumentals seemed kind of lackluster to me. Disappointing.

Instrumentals are ok, rest of the album is not for me 2/5

A bit of a rough listen. First song sounds like Emo Philips going berserk. At least it’s fairly short and the instrumental to vocal ratio is pretty generous. End of Plateau is cool and there’s the odd nice Canyonero riff and Turkey In The Straw solo here and there.

There are some good songs (Lake of Fire) and some good instrumentals, but overall just waiting for it to be over and fairly unengaging.

Kind of need to be in the mood for Meat Puppets.

Some OK but overall not too great

This was a bit of a disappointment to me, because I *really* like Too High To Die. But the two albums have pretty different sounds (which I guess is not too surprising because they were also separated by 10 *years*). What I like about Too High To Die is the tight harmonies and great melodies. By comparison this album almost has intentionally amateurish sounding vocals and meh melodies. I respect that Nirvana chose to play some of these tracks on their unplugged set, but I like Nirvana's take better.

Really couldn't get into it. I actually played it twice but both times I ended up not paying attention to it because I was not enjoying it

2.5 alright

This album was just meh. The voice was off putting and the music wasn't all that great.

A couple of decent tracks, but not my cup of tea. Sorry, Kurt…

Every now and then, I'll listen to Meat Puppets 'cause they do have some well written songs. And then I'm reminded everything is a bit disparate. Very progressive for what was a mid 80s hardcore band but the album lacks as a hole. I'd rather listen to country punk by Violent Femmes, hardcore by Fugazi, and REM for guitar driven indie rock. Maybe just needed some polish or the right production. I will still return every now and then to try again.

2.5 stars. Weird and eclectic spanning multiple genres but not too out there. Twangy and country at times, upbeat tempo at times, slowed-down acoustic, it's a bit all over the place. Liked the instrumental parts the best.

This record is like a gross half-eaten sloppy joe left behind for the flies at a family reunion in the middle of July. For those who thought Kurt Cobain was a bad singer, please consider Curt Kirkwood, main man of the Meat Puppets. Cobain's singing of three Kirkwood cuts on the famous Nirvana Unplugged record marks a significant improvement over the originals found within this record.

Best Song: Aurora Borealis. It's not great that my favourite track on this punkish album is the instrumental, guitar-wankery one but here we are. Worst Song: Lost. I really just think that this punkabilly genre isn't for me. Overall: One commonality I've noticed for (some of) these early punk bands is that even though they will cram 20 two-minute tracks into an album, each of these short songs feels too long because they lack any sort of dynamism. Each song is at most a single idea, and so it is easy to get tired of them even within their relatively short runtimes. There's better punk, folk, and Americana out there. Go listen to that.

Not really.

Shame that this album followed Wild Wood. I felt as if it similarly blended together and I couldn’t pick out individual songs, but it just wasn’t as good. Cool name and cool artwork, just not as good as some of the other 3 stars on the list.

Unsurprisingly, I enjoyed the instrumental tracks a lot more than those with lyrics. One of those times where the musicianship is let down by the vocals. I’d give this album a three if the singer didn’t sound like he was the inspiration for every band on the Juno soundtrack. And don’t get me started on the whole same song title but slightly different thing.

Aaaah, they did that song that Nirvana covered! I enjoyed that one. The rest where interesting but doubt I'll go back for more.

I'm not a fan of the singing style, it sounds like a drawl and I don't personally like it.

Interesting, but I probably wouldn't choose to listen again.

Not a huge fan of this one - I get the appeal, just not for me

This wasn’t super enjoyable. The songs felt quite disorganised and I didn’t really like the lead singers voice. I did enjoy Plateau and what to do though

whew, this was just not for me. i can appreciate on some level that this spans so many genres but the vocals were like nails on a chalkboard.

Since this is an early album of theirs I really hope the singer took some vocal lessons later on... If they made this an instrumental album without vocals I would have rated it higher.

I hate this even more than the last album I was generated!! 2/5

Terrible vocals, barely any melody. Only saving grace is a few good instrumental parts. 1.5

Aiight

This isn't what I expected from the band name. Some of the music is not bad, but the singer has a pretty poor voice.

its so generic

What the hell was that?

A couple of good tracks but overall not sure if this is for me!

Ahhhh I don't care for this

Not my cup of tea

An interesting mix of country and punk. But "Meat Puppets 2" is quite boring. I've gotten a few duds in a row. There's some good tracks here and there. But that isn't enough to save this album. 2 stars this time.

Another decent instrumental album kind of spoiled by horrible singing

Some good stuff there but also some dross. Not gonna rush out to get more.

few good songs, not many, 80% of it was kinda boring and didn’t interest me, i’d give it a 5 overall

I just can't with the vocals.

Meat Puppets II did nothing for me. It's just boring, not good, not bad, not really anything. Wasn't especially as described either, so at least that was momentarily interesting, but I can't understand why it's a must-listen. 2.

Yeah, this is pretty rough and raw. Vocals are pretty ropey, instrumentals very grungey but not particularly interesting. Influential on Nirvana at least, but not that listenable in its own right. 2/5.

Kinda... mellow jam something something?

The band is great, the singing is not. Wonder how many bands suffer from this problem

I only know the Meat Puppets because Nirvana covered Plateau. I'm sure that's true of a lot of people. Never listened to any of their stuff before. This isn't really doing it for me. Maybe just a bit too avante-garde/experimental. The vocals are just kind of terrible.

seicht

The music is fine, but the lead singer is completely tone deaf.

Noodly and chaotic. Hit and miss overall.

Shoulda left these songs to Nirvana, smdh

Never was a big fan of the Meat Puppets.

Interesting hearing the originals of some of the songs from Nirvana Unplugged, but Nirvana improved them massively. I'd looked forward to hearing this, but I didn't really enjoy it. Maybe with a few more listens.

Not for me 2/5

Song: Plateau The singer is awful. Just absolutely awful—he can't hit high notes and the low notes are off key. The instrumental redeems it slightly (and serves to bury his vocal a bit) but not enough for me to score it well.

I’m most reviews here, only knew of the band through Nirvana. Love they got some pop off the back of Unplugged and exposed to a new audience. The fact three songs were included says enough about the album’s influence on the Kurt. A bit messy for my tastes but pleased I got to hear the whole album.

Ok - so this is a tricky one! I didn't love it, but I did like it a bit. I think? What made it all the better was realising that a few of the songs on the Nirvana MTV unplugged in New York (one of my desert island albums) are covers from this album by the Meat Puppets! Who knew!? (not me obviously) Will I listen to this album again? Probably not, BUT.... will I now go listen to MTV unplugged ad nauseam (which incidentally has my all time favourite cover song - 'Man who sold the world' originally by the amazing David Bowie) Fuck. Yes.

I understand that this was a very clear and obvious influence on Nirvana, but that does not mean it's good. I feel for Kurt and the band because if I heard this in the 80s my first thought also would have been "well I can definitely make this better".

I'm totally here for the punk and hardcore of this album. When the slide guitars and fiddles come out, it makes me want to gouge my earballs out. You know. I'm not actually sure that there are any slide guitars or fiddles in this. But whatever country voodoo it plays, it makes me think of slide guitars and fiddles and that's actually unforgivable for a punk hardcore act. Plateau is a lovely track. If you took the obnoxious country out of this, you'd have a decent, slightly experimental punk hardcore pop crossover album, and I'd probably thoroughly enjoy it.

Kurt Cobain made this culturally significant. By itself, it's interesting. I enjoy a number of the tracks, but the album as a whole lacks a cohesive narrative. Not the greatest album, and I'm not sure why I needed to hear it before I died. I'm not unhappy I listened to it. Oh well, you had to fill up 1001 spots – there's bound to be some filler. All that aside. I wish I had the guts to put out an album this bad.

I feel like there is something I’m not getting here. Vocals aren’t great for most of the album. I like The Whistling Song and Lost.

It’s like Nirvana, only sloppier, slower, less rhythm, and surpassingly worse at guitar. Let alone the signing, and all of its droning.

4/10 Songs were ok, but the execution is so poor, especially the singing. Highlights: Aurora Borealis Im a Mindless Idiot Lake of Fire

The style of vocals on this album were an interesting choice. It was pretty unintelligible in large parts and I didn't enjoy it much. The best thing I can say was that the instruments sound pretty good. Highlights: Split Myself In Two

We all know why this became famous. However, although I like it's alt folk rock approach, there's not much going on here as demonstrated by the slew of instrumentals at the end of the album

I dont know how you manage to make a punk band album sound kind of bland, but this does it. I can see what they were trying but it just doesnt sound good at all.

Pretty audacious of the author to put his high school punk band’s album on this list. Some of the melodies are good. The singing is done in a style I can’t stand.

Came and went. Didn’t really love the vocals

Interesting sorta experimental album… i wasn’t super keen it on it though.

Very mixed bag

I wanted to like it but I just do NOT vibe with muffled, noisy music. It really gets in the way of my enjoyment of the other aspects of the songs.

90% drasl, 10% þokkalegt instrumental prog-like shit.

Messy, occasionally fun instrumentals and twangy country rock, but mostly messy tuneless kids play. Nothing like Minutemen.

Some things you just don’t vibe with. I can see why someone could like this, just like I could see why someone couldn’t like the Lemonheads album I rated highly. Although, listening to the Lemonheads album as I write this, I think they’ve got a sharper instinct for songwriting, and a better lead singer. Not that I think the Meat Puppets guy’s voice is bad, I’ve willingly listened to worse voices. I think it may be a thing about album structure. I don’t actively think this is bad music at all. I think that there are too many too similarly structured songs too close together. A lot of the instrumental tracks sound a lot like instrumental versions of the songs that came immediately before them. Now that I’ve been introduced to it, I’m sure I’ll go back and listen to the album again at some point, but at the moment I’m not impressed. But as I said at the top, some acts you just don’t vibe with. In terms of early 80’s alt rock, I think Meat Puppets may be the band I just don’t vibe with

Honestly? Barely listenable. There are a couple of nice songs on it, but it turns out Kurt Cobain already heard them and did vastly superior covers of them. The rest is mediocre.

A bit too shouty. Sounds like a worse version of Nirvana to me.

If Pavement did Country punk. It was ok but didn’t resonate with me.

Rather average

I mean, they do their thing. But I’m not into it. I should be, it fits my sensibilities on paper. It’s just not for me. It’s not. I’ve always thought they were very meh and this hasn’t changed my mind one bit.

I've quite literally been to garage parties with better bands than this. I'm sure they influenced whoever and yeah Plateau and Oh, my ended up being fairly good songs when performed by other people, but they really needed to be performed by other people. Why is this on here?

low key punk rock one of the songs is covered on nirvana's unplugged 2.5

Meh did not care for this

Some of the songs are decent, but I wouldn't go so far to say they're good. I guess one good thing is I now have heard where Nirvana covered Lake of Fire from. Honestly, this sounds like a lot of the inspiration for Nirvana.

Fun enough, but just not very good? I think maybe you would need to have some previous experiences with Meat Puppets to be able to fully appreciate what they were doing here.

instrumentals are good, although often seemed awkwardly rushed. Vocals are terrible.

I bought this CD in about 2003 as one of those JB Hi-Fi $7 deals. I felt ripped off. The meat puppets were not a good band - noisy, out of tune, amateur slop. Hard to digest, no real talent. The craziest thing is that this album is a masterpiece compared to the one before it. Overall take home message on this band in general: Kurt Cobain led a lot of us up the garden path. I'm guessing they sent him a thankyou card though. 2/5.

The music was alright but the singer couldn't sing ! Consequently I enjoyed the instrumental elements of the album. That's going to be tough to rate ? I’m going a harsh 2*

I know these guys from Nirvana's MTV Unplugged show. Jesus, this is crazy. A bit too crazy. Not a fan of the vocals at all. Too many throwaway songs, but I enjoyed the ones that Nirvana covered. Sorry to report that I didn't like this. I was going in with high hopes and generally like noise, but I just didn't click with it, I guess. Maybe something to return to later.

Where jaunty country esque with tuneless, flat singing. Noisy. Reminds me of Bright Eyes a bit.

All over the place. Terrible vocals. Here and there some interesting guitar work, but it might as well have been a fluke.

Extremely loose and messy. This is what they were going for, maybe, in which case full marks. This can be great, but most of the songs aren't strong enough to come through for me. Also too much country after I had two straight hours of bluegrass yesterday. Sorry MPs, you're a victim of the algorithm. The songs Nirvana covered obviously are the draw, and it's interesting to hear them. I do really like the end of Plateau here, and Lake of Fire is stretched out, raw, scratchy and crazed. The rest I can leave, ta very much.

Very weird. Some of the lyrics were humorous. The lead singer cannot sing. It is not good. The only upside is the album was 30 minutes. I have no desire to listen to this album again or other songs by the Meat Puppets. It is better than a one but not really a two.

Musically might be a 4 but I've never been able to tolerate the vocals

The first psychobilly album? Perhaps. There are streaks of lovely jangly melody in this, along with some amusing lyrics. I largely found the instrumental tracks more arresting. Perhaps a second re-listen will garner more than my tentative initial two stars.

Another "why is this on here album", sounds like they tried to mimic the doors or something and this is an AZ band, not UK but I didn't latch onto anything.

Severe inconsistencies in quality between tracks. The first and only time I've heard of the Meat Puppets was in Nirvana's Unplugged album. Listening to this album now, I can see why I managed to live my life without them thus far and will surely manage the rest of my life the same.

Kurt Cobain sure liked this band a whole lot more than I do.

Plateau, Oh Me, and Lake of Fire. Maybe I heard it mentioned at some time when Nirvana was hot, but really had no idea this was MPs as I just think about Nirvana when I hear those songs. They must have had a huge influence on Nirvana. I understand MPs did get to play with Nirvana some. This version of Plateau stands out and the guitar is outstanding in the middle. Guitar in Aurora Borealis is similarly outstanding. A strong weird track. Songs like New Gods and I'm Not Here are just too busy for me-- like a frenetic Zappa song with no sense of humor. Teenagers smells like Sonic Youth a touch. A lot to like here but also some filler and things that don't work for me.

I didn't get it, and I think that is because the band members themselves do not get it either. The songs are not bad, but this looks like much more a demo EP to show off the different styles the band can perform than a coherent album. I don't think that every album must be organized, and I'm into some experimentalism, but it should at least looks like an album rather than a found lost tape that the band forgot in some studio in the 80s.

I don't think I'll enjoy anything named "Meat Puppets"

still not my thing

me no like. not my tipe

Loved the music but not the voice…

Just don't have the patience for this craic (or rather lack thereof).

No... no....no....

Huhhuh, olipa melkosta kamaa, sillee ei hyvästi sanottuna. Kamalaa laulantaa. Jotain happorokkia. Hauskaa kitarointia siellä oli välillä. Mutta ei mene jatkoon mitenkään.

Too Long

Not for me. 1/5

Nein! Nein! Nein! Cover, Sound, Gesang, passt alles nicht!

Nope. Only 2 songs worth listening to, both instrumental, and even those are not that good. Aurora Borealis and 100% of nothing. Any songs with the vocals, just terrible! The guy can't sing. Who bought this $h*t?

urgh . . . nooo!

yeah….. the nirvana covers were better

Can't believe people like this guy's voice

Was just gonna be like "oh, this isn’t for me" but Lake Of Fire pissed me off. How the hell did Nirvana take that mess and make it sound good? I wish I never heard the original. This album is BAD

Sort of shit I've come to expect from American crap bands.

This is a great album????

I immediately forgot about this album as soon as I finished it.

This was a horrible listen. Shame a great band name was wasted on this one

3/11/26 - listened while walking the dog and driving to golf. I didn’t really like it and am very interested in knowing why this made the list. Debated between 1 and 2 stars. The Nirvana covers were the highlight but only because I knew them, and the originals are much worse than the covers. Top Songs - uhhhh

Not for me

It was always going to be difficult to follow “Rumours”. I’ve never heard of the Meat Puppets and I tried to be open minded but found the album disjointed lacking any musicality. Glad to get to the end

I'm not sure if this is even music.

not for me. the fast beats did remind me of the south park theme song lol

yikes voice is just not good; honestly a 1 for me

This is ear destruction

Never heard about them and now listening the álbum, I can confirm It was better when i didn't knew them.

I’m sorry this was a tough one for me

no thanks

i did not think i could like meat puppets less

Yeah no. This one was not good. If you like chaotic, out of tune, rough and all over the shop then maybe this is for you... but this certainly wasn't for me. I'm sure there are albums that fit the same description that I'd enjoy, but this one didn't redeem itself in other ways at all. Not my bag, sorry.

Some cool guitar parts, but hate the vocals. Would never in a million years have been on this list, or remembered past the year 1984 if it wasnt for Kurt Cobain.

I don’t like this at all. Truly in the top 3 worst albums I’ve heard thus far. I almost cut the album off within the first minute of Split Myself In Two, but I’m determined to listen to the albums in their entirety. Even when it’s pitifully bad. There’s not an ounce of rhythm nor tactful pitch in the singing or the organization of the songs. It’s just chaotic garbage. 🗑️
