Surprisingly enjoable

Favorite song was neighborhood number 3

Sitä hyvää indietä

I can't say that I've ever found Arcade Fire all that exciting as a band. I think, sadly, that the era when I could have gotten really into them might have passed me by. However, I will say that this album helped me understand their appeal much better. The songs are well written, and the production on the album is excellent. I've also heard that the lyrics are very good, though it was difficult for me to catch a lot of the words on the first pass 4/5

Haven't listened to this for quite a while, great album, atmospheric and some great tunes, love the rhythm section and strings. Also listening to it on a lot better pair of headphones then 20 years ago and it sounds great. I had a couple more arcade fire albums then drifted away from them, this was still my favourite

Just barely a 4. A lot of lyrics that I enjoyed but also not my favorite like.. sonically for a lot of songs. Love the opening two songs, especially Neighborhood #2 (Laika), plus the last song.

A bit slow for my liking

Really enjoyed as a whole album

I like arcade fire tbh

Had heard some of the songs but didn't know who it was until now. Fun album to listen to

Wow. Actually wow. It sounds like Nostalgia

Early '00s indie classic and began an impressive run from Arcade Fire. Uniquely alone in their catalog, Funeral carried a childish nostalgia that wasn't recaptured.by the band. Hopeful and naive at times. The band would become a little darker from this point out. On this listen, maybe the first start to finish intentional listen since I listened on CD. I noticed a lot more texture, especially as the album ended. Listening to the sounds slowly escape from the band and merge into silence. An impressive and important album for its time.

One of those bands that I knew I had heard before but couldn't have told you what they sounded like. Turns out, I like them! I've heard at least a couple of songs from this album, and I think the band is even better heard in a full-album context. Pretty solid album.

Early 2000’s alt. Seriously not bad I like maybe 2 or 3 songs here.

Football

Pretty good! Not my usual groove, but liked it!

This is pretty great.

Paar hits, bisschen Kitsch

Loved this album in high school and love it still!

Love this album. Very consistent.

A little better than expected as someone who never really "got it" with Arcade Fire. This was solid.

Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels) // (Power Out) // Crown of Love // Wake Up //

a partir da sexta música você começa a mergulhar nas melodias.

cutesy rock album 8/10

Pretty good album. I liked most of the songs but nothing stood out to me. - 8/10

trying to catch up on the albums I missed and I just listened to a 70s album that sounded like every other rock album ever and was boring. ik this is like 30+ years later and maybe its time maybe something else but this feels elevated compared to a lot of the other rock albums on this list. there's some monotony but its monotonous good if that makes sense... 8.4/10

Didn’t listen super closely but it had some cool moments. 7/10

I liked it ok, wake up was good 7/10

These songs all kinda sound like the same song, so it loses some points for that. That one song is pretty good though 8.5/10

It is crazy that this is almost 20 years old and doesn't sound dated.

N: 3 J: 4

I like this album a lot. It feels a little samey after a while and compared with their earlier albums, but I love their sound and lyrics

Solid.

Good record, loved it when it came out

Sind schon einige sehr bekannte und renommierte Songs auf der Scheibe, die auch meinen Geschmack treffen. Einiges ist mir aber zu theatralisch und aufgeplustert

I found I got more into this record towards the end. Not sure why it took so long. Definitely an "indie" feel to it. Perhaps it is worth another try down the road...

I had them pending... At some point I have listened to U2 and at other times to ELO... But a lot of personality!

1. 3.3 2. 3.1 3. 2.7 4. 3.6 5. 3.8 6. 4 7. 4.7 8. 4.7 9. 4.8 10. 4.7

Started a 2 (pretty derivative and I don't like when high vocals back a main vocal but just an octave up) but then Crown of Love was a banger with a great ending and upped it to a 3, and the rest of the album carried that momentum all the way up to 4. Good stuff, was just what my run needed.

Listening to the band after all the allegations around the lead singer hits differently. But objectively this is an incredible album and I think one of their best Strong albums from 1st to last and stood out so much in its day when first released 4

den var sgu meget fed! Aldrig hørt Arcade Fire før

This album was indeed fire. I think Arcade Fire is that upbeat type of sound that can brighten anyone's day. It landed on a day when I needed it, so the timing was great. Definitely interested in more Arcade Fire!

One doesn't hear the krautrock and bossa nova the editors claim to hear, and one does hear emo-adjacent vibes (which editors try to claim they don't, revealing the axe they pretty clearly wish to grind). Overall, this is a intense, driving, rock-centric sorta record that sounded fresh and new a decade-plus ago and retains much of its energy today. Solid all the way around, though slightly overwrought at times.

alt goodies

It's fine. Just flaccid.

I really liked it and I will be listening to it more

So much better than the other Arcade Fire album I’ve listened to

I was originally turned off from this band after a performance they did at an awards show, i think it was the grammys. I thought they were terrible. But I Enjoyed this. Would listen to them some more.

I've listen to that before and I can tell you that it is a classic!

Good album musically..not exactly my cup of tea

Probably my favorite Arcade Fire album. Each song just ‘sounds’ unique, and of their time. Good lyrics, instrumentals, and all around great. This album has and will age great. 4.2

I enjoyed the second half of this album more than the first half. Sometimes I was reminded of the Talking Heads or Mumford and Sons. Not bad.

Reninder

Had not listened to this in several years. Good stuff and will return to it more frequently.

Arcade Fire’s first album is damn near perfect and remains one of my favorites. Crown of Love remains a deeply romantic song with just the right amount of inner torture. I have such fond memories of seeing them open for the Strokes after this album came out nearly 20 (!!!) years ago.

Still their best, although slightly weaker in the middle, but finishes very strongly.

Not The Suburbs, but it's close

I only think I’ve heard a couple of their songs before, and definitely not off of this album. I was pleasantly surprised! It all slaps real hard. Very nostalgia and emotion inducing (for high school era love). Good vibes, kind of a gentle, mellow pixies vibe. Didn’t hate, kinda enjoyed!

Heard of the band before and the music is familiar. Didn't expect much from the album and was pleasantly surprised really enjoyed it. Favortite songs: Crown of Love, Wake Up

Pretty solid, will listen to again

Ah si si me gusto, no es mi favorito pero esta mono

A distinct and iconic indie rock album

Give them their due, at least they try to make music and introduce some melody - and it’s all sweary like so much tripe around.

This is peak Arcade Fire and a huge influence on a lot of the paint-by-numbers indie bands that came after. It is a good album on its own merits.

nice 4*

I think a lot of people would like this album. Very solid.

I lived some somgs on here but not sure about all of them. Still an awesome album

Smooth sound that doesn't get old. Can easily throw on this band and listen all day.

Classic arcade fire action

Pretty chill with some indie interesting vibes. Would listen to again.

Mg me robé un par. Me gustó mucho In the Backseat.

This album really builds. Second listen of the day and it’s growing on me. I’ve always found Arcade Fire interesting when I’ve stumbled across them, and loved ‘Everything Now’ almost obsessively, but never ventured back to their early work. This album has the expected mix of instruments and arrangements that I hoped for. There really are a lot of musicians and instruments here and it all works. The male vocals are at times strained, yet they are quite mesmerising. Really liked the harmonies with the Bjork-esque female vocals on a couple of the tracks. ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ are the immediate stand out anthems for me, and together with ‘Haiti’ sandwiched between them formed the best spell on the album. But that 2nd listen really prodded my senses more. So I’ll be adding this to my library and explore more of their work too. A solid 4.

Solid debut album this from one of Canada's finest, before the fame and media attention Win Butler probably could have done without. A big well rounded sound and quite bombastic in places showing a confidence in their material. Top tracks - 'Neighbourhood (Power Out)', 'Crown of Love', 'Wake Up' and their big single 'Rebellion (Lies)'. Another 4, but a low one.

Solid album, it does a fantastic job with maintaining its style all the way through while increasing its energy as well. I totally forgot that this was the album with “Wake Up” on it. I’ll definitely be adding this to my list of favorite albums.

I completely missed this album when it debuted but being from that era it's still hits just like the rest of those early emo indie pop albums. This was a really great cohesive project that helped lead the wave that was to come of the indie pop/rock genre.

I very much like Arcade Fire. While I prefer The Suburbs, Funeral is pretty damn good too!

Very good

I have enjoyed listening to Arcade Fire over the years, my sons actually introduced them to me. I have thought that if I had been the same age as my sons when they first listened, Arcade Fire would probably be one of my top bands.

What a throw back. Reminds me of middle school and high school riding the school bus. Good rhythmic rock, a little grungier than I typically like. The transition from Haiti to Rebellion really did it for me

Good energy. When this album came out you couldn’t escape it

Wow never heard this before. Even more impressive that this was their debut record. New favorite!

Interesting album. Might come back to it. Wake Up is by far the best song but Crown of Love and Haiti are interesting. Also Neighborhood #2.

It was good

This is a beautiful album that I just wasn't in the right headspace for. Will come back to it for sure

Great album. Classic for me

Really enjoyed this and I think I will enjoy it more on a relisten. Not as good as the Suburbia album, but still an easy 4-stars.

I like this indie rock sound, so this was easy listening for me. Nothing transcendent, but definitely enjoyable, with a few tracks that I saved: Rebellion (Lies) and Neighborhood #1. Every so often there'd be some of that grating instrumentation that I'm not a fan of, though.

I miss 2000s music. Arcade fire has a sound i associate with both modern indie rock and alt rock, twi genres I really love. This album is heartfelt and musically pretty simple, maybe it's getting a bit of a rating boost because it's the first album from the 2000s I have had, but I think its pretty good. Best played during late night cars drives, my favorite track was Neighborhood power out.

Quite good really like the first and last tracks

It's good. I love Neighborhood 3 (Powers Out). There's just enough songs that don't really do anything for me that I always tune out. Maybe some more listens would help, but I probably wont.

Ok… this is a classic. But why is emo catching strays in the book? Get with the times and put Welcome To The Black Parade on here

In the backseat är en av mina favoritlåtar nånsin... tunnels och crown of love är också jättebra. Resten går bra att lyssna på.

я абсолютно не могу объяснить почему, но альбом понравился прям

listened to again actually pretty great

The debut album by Arcade Fire was an indie sensation of the 2000s. It set forth the sound that would be perfected later in Neon Bible - quirky, dramatic, and theatrical. It was reminiscent of the early Genesis album Trespass, when they too were on the cusp of their best work. You could see what they would become once they refined their sound.

Best rebellion, wake up, hair, neighbourhood 3 Worst neighbourhood 2, in the backseat Overall 8.5/10

Love this album

Enjoyable.

As the second arcade fire that was offered to me on this list, I was prepared to start throwing shade. I'm pleasantly surprised. I might even go and seek this out to listen to on my own in the future. A solid and competent entry into the "Stomp/Clap" genre.

Classic

Never heard of this band before. Listened to the album several times, kinda like it

Entire album has enjoyable tunes, even some reminiscent of Rush.

Heel leuk

Dear Diary, today is September 30th, 1993. Homecoming is next week and I really hope Johnny asks me! Everyone else already has dates! Anyways, I found this new album that explains how I feel. My angst is composed with a sense of confidence that everything is going to end up ok. I’m going to walk up to Johnny and demand he ask me to the dance! Wish me luck!

I liked it. My favorite song was Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Pretty groovy. Wish I could understand the words better so I could sing along

First album. I liked it!!

Slaps.

So good, just a shame Win Butler is a bit rapey.

Moody and intense

Liiieees Liiiees

The album was fantastic. It had a great overall theme and the music itself was well produced and executed pleasantly.

Solid album. 4-4.5 / 5

Great Album. Had it since 2004. Noticed a resurgence in popularity around 2010 when Where the Wild Things Are came out.

Emo rock, but done well

This album comes so close to toeing the line between alternative feels that I love and Indie feels that I loathe perfectly. It's pretty much just 7 Kettles that keeps this from getting a perfect 5 here. Favorite tracks: Power Out, Crown of Love

They would eventually get biger in sound and in ambition, but never quite as good as this.

smushy goodness.

Came out many years earlier than I thought.

Groundbreaking sound, fantastic arrangements, superbly written, really worth its 1001 title in the modern age. 4.5

Indie rock de los 2000, muy bueno

Very very anthemic, beautiful chords and climaxes, feels very special but at the same time, how grandiose and reverby it is takes away from a personnal connection to the songs

It's a shame about the singer! I really enjoy this record, it's been a while so I'm looking forward to revisiting this one.

This is a solid record; good songwriting and solid performances. Not life-changing per se but I can't help but wonder if the hate is from Gen X'ers who, upon listening to this album in 2004, realized that they were in their 30s now and that their youth was behind them. So the bile might be more of an association thing as opposed to a problem with the album itself.

Faktiskt ganska så bra!

85/100

I have no complaints here, except that Max promised me a review and he has yet to deliver. Tsk tsk.

On paper, Arcade Fire ticks all my boxes. I love that raw emotion and the lyrical content and the music is just the right side of heartbroken. I don’t really know why they haven’t made more ingress in my knowledge base. They are used a lot in TV shows to counterpoint action or as commentary for a montage. Every time I hear them, I remember how much I like them and go on a rabbit hole search listening to certain songs. But just as quickly I forget about them. I can’t say why, whether it’s been a matter of timing or just time. I do love those violins and Wake Up gets me every time. Children, don't grow up Our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up Ain’t that the truth!

When this album first started, I was pretty certain I wasn't enjoying it. The vocals sounded affected — I was wondering if there was a connection to Modest Mouse in just the vibe and overall sound of the band and vocals. And then, song by song, I started falling under the album's spell, and by the middle, I was fully on board. I wasn't able to give this a close enough listen to get into the lyrics and meanings of the songs — this one definitely warrants another listen — but I heard enough to get swept into the emotive, creative, well-written, well-produced songs.

I practically wore out my copy when this was released. Then I stopped listening and haven't really revisited since. It still holds up, though I'm not quite sure it reignited a spark to put this back into regular rotation. (Not that I have time for a rotation with all these daily albums coming at me.) Anyway, this is a confident and astonishing debut. They've got hooks for days and the arrangements are creative and memorable. I'm not sure why I'm not connecting with it like I used to, but that's on me, not them, I think.

First listen was while I was cutting the grass; overall impression was this is solid early-00s folk-indie that reminds me a bit of The Decemberists. 4 / 5 Second listen I felt pretty similarly; however, no particular songs stood out to me. I'd say this is a 3.5, but I'll round up.

Never really listened to Arcade Fire besides Wake Up. Glad it's on this album because it's a top 100 song for me. This album so far is a unique intersection of rock and folk with a touch of emo. I love the beat switches in their songs. Rebellion is also a familiar song. Good album, will probably listen again.

I'm happy that this is on here. I've always heard of Arcade Fire but never listened and have always wanted to. The Neighborhood songs are awesome especially #3 The speed up part at the end of Crown of Love was a very welcomed surprise I know Wake up it's a great fit in this album to be a single That album was very good. For me it definitely peaked in the middle then fell off with the last two songs. But still an album I will be listening to again. Strong 4

Only really listened to Reflektor by them which I hear is insanely different from their usual style, so I'm excited. Pretty good listening. Then Neighborhoods #3 (which reminds me of the song Reflektor with less electronics). Damn I just kept picturing hearing that song live. Probably fuxxx. Wake Up is an obvious jam. Didn't even realize that was by them but knew the song. Haiti song makes me happy. Loved the buildup in In The Backseat. Great album. I think I like Reflektor better but was trying to not be biased. I know this is critically acclaimed but just felt kinda stagnant at some points. Really enjoyable though.

This reminds me a lot of "Funeral for a friend" by Elton John, which I really appreciate.

I really like the overall vibe of this album. The sound. The atmosphere. It all works pretty well as background music to everyday life. Thats kinda what this album feels like though, just background music. Some tracks attempt to stand out more than others such as Laika, Crown of love, wake up and Rebellion however, even those dont really take the album to a different level. On the whole I'd say Funeral just kind of meanders. The only reason this would be a "must listen" album is because while not pioneering a genre of their own they did popularize a sound that spawned countless imitators. Quite a few of which did it better. Despite my previous criticism I do like Arcade Fire and have listened to this album, Neon Bible and The suburbs a number of times. (both of which I enjoy more)however as the years have gone by they just don't stand out for me the way they used to. This album is a high 3 low 4 to me now.

New sound to me, liked it

I had listened to this album a few times before and didnt really get the hype, but this inspired me to listen again. And it clicked pretty hard. Great album, tunnels will be stuck in my head for a while

Almost blasphemy not to give this one a 5/5, but it really only ventures into greatness from 'Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles)' an onwards. The three-track stretch of 'Wake Up', 'Haiti' and 'Rebellion (Lies)' is peak Arcade Fire and defining an entire new genre, giving us artists such as fun. (wuhu).

Ok, I didn't hate it. If you put this on in the car, I could listen to it. Some songs were better than others.

Always thought this wasn't their best album, and still do, but don't think you can argue with the tunes on here. Shame the lead guy is called Win and is Pervy Pete

I can tell there is something deep in here. Wake Up is a good tune. That closer was so powerful, this is worth a deeper dive.

I was going to post about 'warm' and 'cold' albums but instead will reflect on how extra-ordinarily back-loaded this album is. The first four tracks are indistinct, hesitant, a bit sound and fury signifying not that much. And then the three punch of Kettle, Crown of love and Wake Up delivers something else entirely. The rest of the album maintains that level, perhaps its part of that uber-indie vibe this album has to make people work a bit first. Anyway, not their best album but very good.

This album is my best. Made me love this band. Still do.

Second thoughts are this is a very good album, and definitely an 8.5/10 This album is incredible, at each track is laced and has its own unique personality. The instrumentals are superb, there is not a single bad song. There is not much to say in a negative light, other than the fact some songs may sound similar, and some have basis indie riffs. Favorites: #1 / Une Annee Sans Lumiere / #4 / Crown of Love / Wake Up / In the Backseat

kinda cool tbh

Good stuff

I remember buying this when it came out and despite it being full of great track was a little disappointed. Stands up well now and one of the better offerings by AF.

Love this album!

I know upfront I like this one. Rebellion (Lies) might be my favourite AF song.

height of early naughts indie then, just a pretty good album now Favorite Tracks: Neighborhood 1-4 4-4.5/5

Cool album! I liked this one better than the other one of this list (The Suburbs).

Bra gjort Montreal!

A great debut by Arcade Fire, it has the typical sound that we have come to know of Arcade fire, but at the time of release, their style was quite new and fresh. Filled with lots of emotion and atmosphere, I think it's one to add to the record collection! Best: Neighbourhood #3 Worst: Neighbourhood #4

I had listened to The Suburbs on a recommendation before listening to this and really liked it so i was hopeful. it’s definitely not as good but there are some really great moments, the best of which comes at the end of Crown of Love with the switch from 6/8 to disco 4/4

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) (1) 2 - Wake Up (7) 3 - Rebellion (Lies) (9)

Rockindie 2004.. jahas jahas..Paskinta paskaa btw rummut aina samat rummut pum pump pum pum pum menee tahtia.. Se pelastaa että oikeesti conceptual hyvä alnumi ja hyviä kappaleita.

it is definitely a good album. No song drags the experience down but the songs itself aren't that great and wonderful. It's good but it doesn't achieve the 4/5 7.5/10 (3/5)

They brought an original sound, which is not easy to do. Worth a few listens, at least.

This was quite good. The vocals are quite distinctive. Not sure if this is something to worry about later since Morrissey's vocals were also distinctive. There is good pace to this album.

This is a terrific debut release. It’s well-developed with lovely arrangements – the violins and accordion make for a big sound – and lyrically they tackle heavy themes. The one weak link might be Win Butler’s vocals, which don’t hold up when he really tries to belt it out.

Back in 2004 I walked into my local record shop and started to thumb thru the racks of records when this music came on that really caught my attention. I had never heard anything quite like it before. It was so unique and so original sounding. I asked the clerk who it was and he proudly announced it was this new Indie band from Montreal called Arcade Fire. I grabbed it and couldn’t wait to get home to listen to it. I still think this is probably their best release and one of the best Indie albums from the early 2000s. The songs on the album are similar sounding but yet very cohesive and the segues from song to song are just perfect. This is a very high 4, almost a 5 for me.

the third arcade fire album on this project but their debut album (excluding their ep). it contains a lot of their usual morose, melancholy sound. some indie music can be real misses for me, but with arcade fire, i know they are dependable, based on the other two albums i've heard of theirs throughout this project. like with their other albums, they created a theme on funeral. it can be moody but they do stay on theme. "crown of love," the standout, breaks your heart, and it's not like "wake up" makes you feel any better. i like all three neighborhood songs, and they really tie the album together. i found myself disappointed by régine chassagne, the female vocalist, and i'm not sure her voice is strong enough to carry a song by herself, but at least there were only two solo songs. also, this guy win butler sounds like a real piece of work. unfortunate arcade fire makes such good music.

the pretty sounds from this album seem to scratch an itch in my brain that has been nagging my subconscious for several months now. ive wanted to listen to something like this for so long, something that feels like a mix of neutral milk hotel (especially with the album art!) and my bloody valentine. but at the same time i feel like saying the above is an injustice to how uniquely all of the records elements synergise together. you dont see some of the instruments and individual styles used together as often as some of the songs on here do. im a big fan of the sounds on this record; theres something spectral about them, maybe its got something to do with the theme and the title of the album, "funeral". its strange. but in a good way. i really feel the depth of the emotions that come from the vocals, especially with the dude. i feel like as enthusiasts of music we dont really talk enough about the little vocal intonations that go into adding to the whole experience of a record. i notice the same things in film, we love talking about the grand and loud emotional performances of actors and often avoid the performances that convey so much through subtlety. theres some french weaved into here as well, which im definitely a fan of. i think it goes well with the themes and sounds. my top 3: power out is definitely one of my favourites on this album. i just like the sounds and lyrics a lot. 7 kettles is really interesting to me, the way they used the sound of the kettle and very smoothly weaved it into the song. rebellion is definitely my favourite. it sounds dreamy yet ambitious at the same time. and i really love the theme of it as a whole. PS in the backseat is such a beautiful outro. it makes me feel the same way id feel as a child when my favourite adventure movie was ending, or when i finished reading 13 reasons why. its just a peaceful grieving. so good

Definitely very good 00s indie but not my favorite 00s indie.

Solid 4* album. I love the genre!

Solid indie album, enjoyed the vocals. Nothing felt too interesting though.

Wasn't really familiar with Arcade fire before this and quite enjoyed this

Very clean with some very nice songs on it. A lot of the album disappears into the background a bit though,

An amazing debut album from one of my fave bands. It's very close to a perfect record, except for a couple of so-so songs.

Ever wanted to listen to Emo music but hated how terrible the vocalists were and how shallow their lyrics were? Well, guess what: There’s not only an album, but an entire band about that. Think if an emo outfit grew out of adolescence and dumped all the awkwardness with it, and you would have Arcade Fire. This is their debut. First album. And it sounds as grandoise as a progressive rock record recorded by a veteran band. The confidence they have on this record is staggering. I mean, again, this is their DEBUT! And here they are, giving some of the most rousing stadium-stompers this side of the early 2000s! Gone are the indie “slacker vibes” that bands like Pavement brought to the table, now these indie outfits have something deeper to say. The production gives the songs a cinematic quality to them: that kind of sprawling sound that seems larger than life. And nowhere does the album lose any of its momentum. It keeps building, and building, and building, until it finally climaxes at “Rebellion (Lies)”, another impressive anthem. It’s no secret that this album gets the praise it does, this is the real deal. No other 2000s indie act could boast such an explosive debut (maybe barring Franz Ferdinand but I’d argue that’s a different case), at least over in North America. A great driving album where you’re on a long rural highway and can pay attention to the lyrics a bit more. Standout Songs: “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)” “Crown of Love” “Rebellion (Lies)”

A great album I’ve never paid much attention to. Hard to believe it came out in ‘04. Wake Up famously made the trailer for Where the Wild Things Are look good and the first track is a classic. My faves were Crown of Love and Rebellion.

Putting the fun into funeral.

emo for pyros

Reminds me of 1st Bank Center with Kyle. Great album, great time. 4.5 for memories. Maybe 3.5 for music.

Love this album

Indie rock. No está mal.

Can't rate this without nostalgia.

not what I expected but really good, should revisit later

this is a great indie-rock album. Really takes me back to my early/mid-20s.

Rainy day, perfect to start off this challenge. Also I already had "Wake Up" liked?? No idea when but when I was listening to the album I was like, oh I like this one and sure enough I already had it like :)

Cool album. Enjoyed the piano and the strings. Interesting sound.

Easy to listen to indie

I’d give it a 7.5 out of 10. The first half was pretty boring with the neighborhoods but got much better.

Great debut.

The album itself is a 5/5 but Win Butler ruined it for me.

Good patiche of all the pop rock that came before it. Solid release. Too bad about Butler.

Liked it alot

Couple of solid tracks but didn’t blow me away. Obviously don’t have the nostalgia that this album (or band) brings. The good is good enough for a 4.

I’m familiar with this album and have a few songs from it that I really enjoy. It was nice to listen to it again after a long time.

Didn’t really vibe with this album it’s a 3.5 stars really but I’ll round it up to 4.It’s indie rock that’s pretty good.

Great stuff

They sort of all merge together. Which isn’t a bad thing.

Some good jams

After reading the wiki, it impresses me that this album was all but complete after one week. Crown of Love hits feels. Wake Up is a classic to me. But Haiti and Backseat with the female vocals really surprised me, they were softer and yet more of statement pieces for me. One thing that alludes to the "Indie" realm for me here is the unpolished, unrefined sound with some classical instruments is a cool juxtaposition.

Beter dan andere album

That one song sounds like that one song by Kodaline.

bcnr vibes. track one bangs. driving rhythm is really cool. I like a good indie clip on the vocals. what on earth time signature is track 2. the backing vocals work in a cool way here. still cool. cool guitar lead here in track 3. softer vibe. the mixing of the drums is very specific but sounds good. I like this song quite a bit. I like the whole melody being built off a simple phrase. fuck yeah. the sliding bass oh yeah. banger. on about track 4 now. I love the simple sliding bass. reminds me of pattos bassline on track 6 of iwutbf. what an instrument. this all just works so well. the mix is so full. holy shit this is mad. 10/10 song wholeheartedly. that song had me groovin. I think a picture of houses at nighttime would be a better album cover for this album. not a bad cover but the music gives vibes of the sunken suburbs in Derek Mahon day trip to donegal poem. the subtle building here in track 5 is cool. I like this feature on the website of taking notes. makes more present listening experience. this song is yet to Get a heart but I'll mention it's really cool to use kettle whistling in the music. this is cool mixing technique have 2 violins panned hard left and right double tracking the same thing then have 1 cut out and then change. I'll have to try that when recording mark for guitar or something. track 6 I think I recognise this chorus. this is sick. I get why this album is so famous. I prefer the use of strings here than on the last track. the start of the verse section gives ed Sheeran vibes. this chorus slaps tho tbf. I'll definitely be revisiting this album!!! this song is kinda Concorde. I wonder why the next song is so popular. oh that's a cool drum groove. vocals sound cool. track 8 is nice but not anything mad at least on first listen. I need to get new headphones these ones get uncomfortable ridiculously quickly. hell yeah track 9. I love a good hard panned clean tone small electric. the structuring of this song is cool. makes sense. shaped like a series of ramps. was that a key change or a dodgy chord change. mmm . I like the soundscape trach ten. mmm . chune to end it on. I like that technique of simplifying the melody that was big and grandiose into something really small to end it off. as far as the album over all I definitely preferred the first half to the second. the first half blew my mind the second have was really quite good. it lost me a little with neighbourhood 4 kettles, but that was probably just the pace change and from how much I messed with neighbourhood 3 power out. very cool

A bit too orchestral for me but I’d listen to some songs again

This is the sound of 2004 at UVM. Start to finish it's so lovely. Doesn't hit quite as hard as it did back then, the sound has been so redone. But still brings it back.

Is win butler a weird fucker? Yes. Is this an impressive debut? Also yes.

Reminded me how much I like bass guitar with good headphones. And how much I don’t like distortion on vocals.

Well, this is much better than any overplayed Arcade Fire song I've heard on the radio. Genuinely a really good Album with unique sound and ambition. Only got a 4* because it won't get much airplay from me in future, but enjoyed the couple of run throughs so far.

Brings back vibes from my college days at the Dalton Depot.

Started out as a traditional sounding Indie album but the last half was superb. The use of strings added to the great textures of sound.

Really liked this when it came out, perhaps because I saw them live many times with various indie luminaries of the age (The National! The Killers! Wolf Parade! Modest Mouse!). It's still pretty good although parts are a bit over-earnest and awkward.

much more exicted about this one!!! was pretty good i do prefer a shorter album it was chill 4/5

Great album

Out of this universe...... very, very nice :-)

Absolutely brilliant debut album. Sadly it's also the high point of their career so far. Their second album was very weak, followed by a string of very good to excellent albums. Their most recent is awful - preachy and irritating. Not a good look when you consider the trouble Win Butler has gotten himself into.

I feel like I’m half a generation off when I hear this album. I was 26 and heard “Power Out”, probably on MySpace and I loved it. It takes me back to an in between time and space where I was nowhere near being a kid, but also didn’t have a lot of grown up concerns. All the same, it’s not a part of me like the music I was listening to 10 years earlier. Really good songs from start to finish. But when I listen to it, I get this feeling of borrowing someone else’s stuff. Not my own. Another generation’s.

Arcade Fire is one of the bands that makes me wish it was still 2004.

Pretty good, but it didn't hold my attention very long as outstanding. Probably a personal music taste preference though.

Good stuff

triste esperanzador y divertido, todo ello bien cohesionado. me ha gustado(4,5/5 ONN). Vibrante, con fuerza y muy musical, me ha gustado mucho. No os perdáis un directo suyo. (5 LNM).

hey this is pretty good! starts off great but neighbourhood 3 and 4 are kinda unnecessary I feel. Best tracks: neighbourhood 1 (tunnels), crown of love, wake up

Truly one the finest debut albums by a Canadian band, Funeral shines on almost every track and continues to be Arcade Fire's greatest achievement. I saw the band during the Funeral tour when it came out and I can't think of a better concert I've seen and the intensity and pure physical energy the band puts fore during their live shows was something to see. I've seen them since and the songs from Funeral are still the highlights of the shows. With Win Butler's recent douchey (toxic) behaviour with some fans, I can't bring myself to give 5 stars, the music and album deserve it, but the band has left me with question marks.

Definitely worth several more listens.

It is beautiful record though I felt I was in an indie move in 2005. It seems dated and a product of its time still I will probably add it to the collection.

Great album! Wasn't a fan of Arcade Fire before, but I like this kind of indie rock. None of the songs is a clear radio hit, but the whole record maintains a pretty high quality from the start to finish. I'll soon listen to this album again, but it looks like a sure thing to buy a vinyl.

This record is so so good! And what a great experience to listen through the whole album with the lyrics in front. Musically, Arcade Fire is great, but the lyrics is where they truly shine! Key Tracks: Neighbourhood #1 - #4, Crown of Love, Wake Up, Rebellion (Lies) 9 out of 10

It’s bittersweet. I feel like that’s the best way I could describe it. It’s great.

Pretty much a modern classic. They arrived as a force of nature. The album hold together well. Its epic in a U2 kinda way, it hit the loud quiet dynamic like the Pixies and it feels emotional. 4.5

Liked this a lot, from a time before the hipster crown jumped in and ruined it.

Fun indie pop rock

Exceeded expectations!

Couple bangers, in general a v good rock album

Pretty good! I definitely enjoyed The Suburbs on first listen quite a bit more, but this isn’t bad still. Biggest complaint is that the vocals are so hard to hear behind all the instrumentation. 7/10

Great album. I’ve owned it for a long time although I rarely listen to it. “Haiti” would find itself on a list of my favourite songs ever.

Not quite 5 but very close.

Really liked this album when this first came out and it still holds up well. Shame they went downhill after this

Great album

Sorry nerds. Best song: Crown of Love, Worst song: Neighborhood 4. 78/100

What an album. Magical even. I remember seeing them at the Pyramid at glasto and Wake Up with all the flags and that waving was goosebumps gear. That Win Butler is a dirty ticket though isn’t he?

Excellent album from a top class gang of gimps

I enjoyed it, the beats were surprisingly good, felt like the template for bands like Arctic Monkeys, Lo-Fi and The 1975

Melancholy and emotional. Perfect music for those rainy days when you want to turn inward.

Emotional, powerful, loud. This was an enjoyable listen. Every song felt like something out of a coming-of-age film soundtrack. The lead singer’s voice can be a bit polarizing, but I enjoyed it. There are some pretentious parts of this album as well. It really embodies the 2000s indie sound.

I really like this album, but it is curated almost to a fault. I feels like a theater performance, I’d have to listen more to get it I think. In The Backseat is an incredibly track though.

Never got into Arcade Fire but this album might be the exception. First Listen?: Y Fav. Track(s): Neighborhood #3 (Power Out), Wake Up Rating: 3.7/5

nice album, 4 stars

I love Arcade Fire, but not in a 5* kind of way

Amazing album, solid vocals and great song writing

Loved this

Solid record. Too bad it’s looking like he’s a creep.

If only they made more albums like this

When this first came out I couldn't stand hearing Wake Up constantly, and would change the channel on the radio the second I heard it come on. While I still feel they're a bit up their own ass being 'artists' I do enjoy the music a lot more now. Regine is a treasure, don't hurt her Win.

Fantastic! I loved the Alvino Rey add on the Japanese Delux edition. I'm a big fan of the 40's music so this was a surprise and really fun bonus. The album itself is great. I've heard this one a few times now and think it has grown on me. 4/5

Good instrumental

Bretty gud loved the orchestral vibes and mesh of different instruments to form a nice cohesive ensemble. Unfortunately canceled though cancel me cancel me

From first listen, particular favourites were Neighbourhood #3 and Crown of Love. Definitely liked this album, will want to listen again. Men ruin everything and we can't have nice things ever :| still a good album but Win Butler can rot.

Big fan of Arcade Fire, but hadn't listened to this full album in a long time. It's really, really, good - I love the almost orchestral sound they create - and there aren't many bad songs on this. Definitely a little pretentious when it comes to song titles (I'm inherently sceptical of most albums that have songs split into different numbered tracks) but there's so much depth to the record that I can move past that. There's also tonnes of energy, coming at you in slightly different ways, and the album if anything gets better than worse as you get towards the end. I've always found that I can take or leave their albums after the first listen or two, but they really grow on me. 4/5, not far off a 5.

One of those generational albums that is a good listen if you want to get into the millennial groove

A first time listen for me! Much more familiar with later Arcade Fire albums. I like it - a bit more gritty, maybe slower? All round enjoyable listen.

Definitely a good album. Most of the songs were one big track, with a couple breaks between them. Worth a listen later.

Very cool album. Strong dynamics, lots of emotion, good sense of taste, even some interesting instrument choices.

Started off a bit slow for me but picked up into something unique, interesting, foot-tapping

Quintessential 2000s indie. Held together nicely on the strength of its two enormous singles. As an album everything seems to move to seamlessly from one song to the other bringing a different feeling to listening from start to finish.

Chill indie-rock, very enjoyable, but nothing really original

It's a nice contrast - I got the Suburbs yesterday, and respected the musicianship, but found the whole thing very flat. Whereas this is rather lovely - the naivety, and the willingness to try for an epic sweep make it much more exciting. Wake Up and Neighbourhood 3 make the failures elsewhere more than worthwhile. I feel like this may be one of those bands that may have been better off without success. Perhaps they may have kept it simpler (if this could be described as simple).

Great album.

Fjölbreytt lagasmíð og mikið lagt í útsetningar, raddanir og slíkt. Áhugavert.

the original architects of the twee faux country indie movement. this really did sound like nothing else when it was released, hard to imagine now there is an abundance of imitations with shouting bits in it (looking at you lumineers). having not listened to it for years its better than i remembered.

Every time I close my eyes I picture myself at my own funeral. I'm surrounded by an orchestra of dwarves playing Arcade Fire tracks on flutes. My mother is crying, my father is dancing. My wife and children are nowhere to be seen. It's a sorry state of affairs. In the distance I see the shadowy figure of a woman I used to love. Her face is pale, with crimson lips. I try to reach out to her. I scream, but she looks through me blankly. I fall to me knees and crawl towards my coffin. It's draped in a Chelsea flag which has been completey covered in the jizz of the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff. I laugh. The ground opens and I fall into hell. This is where I finally see my wife and children. They hate me. It's everything I ever wanted.

Really good. I can tell where other bands were influenced by this album. The sound is similar to a lot of stuff that is popular right now.

First full arcade fire album, a lot of it sounded similar but I can see why they blew up.

A pleasant, steady, and inoffensive rock album. Their style isn't too exciting in my opinion so each track seemed to lean more on the composition, which was mostly fine. The bulk of the album didn't live up to its best tracks, but when does it ever

A suivre

The instruments, production and lyrics were good from track one. The drummer needs to try something besides a hi-hat disco beat. The constantly strained vocals were not my favorite but they grew on me—or at least, the virtues overcame the distraction over time. Haiti Mon Pays and Rebellion(Lies) cemented it for me. This is a great album!

Well composed album. Chill listen.

Good but not great. No real stand out tracks (other than Rebellion (lies) which I knew before) but works well as a whole piece. Singing in French and playing accordion are always welcome here!

a bunch of bangers here

Love this

Solid hipster garbage

Приятный для прослушивания альбом. Есть запоминающиеся композиции.

Started somewhat slow but then really came on towards the end. The hit was Wake Up and it's a great song. Rebellion is great. Definitely an Arcade Fire album. Deep song meanings and such a wonderfully distinct sound. I think it will need to be listened to again to appreciate it fully.

Listened before and really enjoy it, but it's one of those albums where - besides a couple of songs, the sounds really blend together. Good in that it's a good sound and cohesive, but hard to pinpoint those songs for relistens.

There were some really beautiful moments on this. I will definitely be giving Arcade Fire a deeper investigation. Thanks, 1001albumsgenerator!

So layered. And much like Prince, once you get used to the melody, they offer you a second melody in the same song.

Pretty good 2000s era indie rock. I don’t love it but I’ll gladly listen to it again

Great stuff.

Great indie rock. I love this type of music. So nice to listen to, very relaxing. 8/10

I understand that this is good, and I mean half of indie rock that came after this sounds like it, but i didn't enjoy listening to it really. It's bringing me down. Not a fault of the album, it's me lol

Has some really nice moments, high recommend.

Light. Shade. Tenderness. Drama

Arty glory

solid catchy indie rock that has cast a long shadow over the rest of the genre. feels a little designed-for-radioplay but that is fine by me!

Ingrained in me. I can’t even tell if I like it any more. It just exists as part of my sonic landscape. Yes, he’s whiny. I just don’t seem to care.
