Reviews (page 8 of 9)

While The Flaming Lips are an accomplished and celebrated band, I find them boring and uninspired.

I like their music, but the main singers voice can be grating.

Wanted to like it more than I actually did.

tough listen

Op zich wel relaxte muziek. De zang vind ik wat minder prettig.

Interesting. Started off very intriguing, but just kept progressing to be weirder and less pleasant. A shame.

4.8/10 1. Race for the Prize 2. The Spark that Bled 3. The Gash

I’m not a fan, not bad playing or singing, some nice scores, but nothing to get your teeth into. It’s more of a poetry album, which is not what I’m looking for.

Seichter Dreams Pop.

Meh...

Crap music, paired with uninspired lyrics and a vocalist whose voice is like nails on a chalk board.

Just not my thing. It was painful to listen to the whole album. I feel like my high school band had better tone and talent than this attempt.

Not my taste.

I have heard of these guys before. Interesting listen.

There’s no excuse for Wayne Coyne’s voice

Singer’s voice sounded like a 13 going through puberty and was very shaky at best. When they started singing about spider bites and flying insects, they lost me.

This album is fortunate it caught me on a good day otherwise it would be getting a 1. Happily for all parties involved I was in a good mood so this gets a 2 but my goodness I did not enjoy sitting through this album. So far all the indie albums this site has forced me to endure have been absolute buns. I don't know if that's just because this site is choosing stupid indie bands or if this just means I do not like indie as a genre (which could very well be the case and I'm perfectly fine with that). Wayne Coyne's voice is awful. He cannot sing. Somebody had to have told him that early on because I don't understand how someone could enjoy listening to that man try to sing. It is unpleasant on the ears. The instruments were great.

don't understand why this is on the list. way too much use of distortion, discordant sounds. and not a fan of vocals, or lyrics

Ugh. No.

Weird album. Never understood the popularity of the Flaming Lips

I don’t believe this is required listening. Played it through though.

Probably a 3 for the music, 1 for the lyrics and so we'll average it out to a 2.

let’s stop using the label “indie” as an excuse to sing really badly

I don't really like this album. I remember liking the lips but not this album I guess

I was not minding this but then it went downhill after the spider bite song.

Holy pretentious nonsense, Superman!

My second Flaming Lips album in a few days. I like when bands get experimental, but jeez this falls short for me. When it works it's really good, but a lot of the time it sounds like at least one of the instruments is fighting the others just for the sake of being different. The lyrics are atrocious. I certainly won't be listening to this again.

Omg turn down the drums We're these lyrics written by children?

Nah, I would rather have Yoshimi than this album.

Strange album. A mix of pop/soft rock music with electronic effects. The lyrics seemed borderline childish at times, like someone carefully guiding you through a psychedelic trip. Never really gets interesting somehow. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again.

Man, I guess I just don't like The Flaming Lips?

58 minutes and 14 tracks that blended together into a nondescript melange of forgettable sound. Here's a soft bulletin for you...if you really want to listen to something good from the 90's, find something else.

Honestly not a bad album, it's just a little ruined by the Lead Singer's terrible voice. It's got some cool alt sound though

Not for me. Every song felt similar. Boringly long.

Kinda boring

Very different.

With the exception of Mokran mix tracks, most are dominated by a jazzy feel. They lack a consistent melody, but are driven lyrically in a speech-like, highly rhythmic declamatory style delivered with pained vocals.

I didn’t care for these lyrics. I think I’m not much of a Flaming Lips fan. This listen didn’t really grab me and I found the music repetitive and bland.

Interesting music, cool instrumentation. Not really my thing though and not a big fan of the singer’s voice.

Very meh. Very boring. The lead singer doesn’t have a very good voice, and the writing seems basic. Wouldn’t listen to again.

Don’t like leads voice. Grating.

Enjoyed the music, but not the vocals so much

Great opening. Musically so good, but couldn’t get past the guys voice. Hard to listen to over the course of the full album.

Verzerrte Drums? Hm. Gesang ok. Insgesamt not my pair of shoes...

I wish the singer had a different sound. Instruments are a bit all over but not in a bad way. Can't really get into it with his voice and how it works with the rest of it all. I didn't get a lot out of this one sadly. I liked the energy from the drums on Race for the Prize.

I've liked a Flaming Lips track here and there through the years, but I'm not sure about a whole album. The sound blends the songs sound a little repetitive. Might revisit tho

Not much more than "meh" can be said about this album.

True to the album title, "The Soft Bulletin" is, in fact, annoyingly soft. Like cream of wheat. Or cottage cheese. It's just painfully wimpy. There are no teeth behind those flaming lips, apparently. The instrumentation is alright which is why this doesn't flat fail. But it was a close thing, let me tell you. A super-soft 2 for a super-soft album.

First time with this album. Not a great first impression.

nowhere near as good as Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. this really wasn’t that good at all.

2.5/5 - I was once lucky enough to leave a Flaming Lips concert early

I needed more time. In 1999 I can see this being a big album, but it’s pre strokes indie revolution and I feel that. I didn’t vibe with the vibe. Feeling yourself disintegrate and what is the light started to grow on me but other than that everything blended together.

How this album was recognized as being one of the best albums of the decade baffles me. More psychedelic rock and more drug-induced experimentation. While fairly easy to play in the background, this album is very forgettable.

Eh, it's okay. I think this might get a 3 or even a 4 if I were in the mood to listen to this, but I also think I'd very rarely be in the mood to listen to this.

Someone get him a voice coach. Sometimes better than decent beyond that

Ugh. I really don't like the Flaming Lips, mostly because of Wayne Coyne's vocals. You're artsy and so quirky--I get it! Now give us a break and sing normally. The times you do (a few songs towards the end of this album I think), it's not terrible. I gather the Lips' sound has evolved over the years but between this and the Pink Robots album I have zero interest in finding out.

Decent. Listenable. Yoshimi and the Pink Robots is way better though.

I don't really care for the flaming lips

Surprisingly just fine. Thought I'd enjoy Flaming Lips more, but this album just falls a little flat for me. Not bad at all, not skipable.

Hmmm.

Instrumentals are the only reason this isn't a 1/5. The vocals are grating. Sleeping on the Roof was my favorite (straight instrumental).

Awful. Don’t get it.

pretty much all songs sounded the same

Similar theme thoughout the album, easy on the ears.

Psychedelic weird stuff 2/5

Some standout songs but listening to it for too long grates my nerves

first song was really good tho. was expecting better

So I know I should like this album. But I just didn't. It could be that it would be amazing to hear live, but it was like there was something missing that I couldn't put my finger on.

2/5 Nice instrumentals, but way too disoriented and chaotic for my liking.

This is perfectly fine.

Honestly this is just not for me. I didn't hate it but something about Wayne Coyne's singing just does not do it for me. And the instrumentals were interesting at times but nothing really struck me, don't think I'll ever come back to this one.

Ok, not really my cup of tea. A bit like radiohead

Unremarkable but not bad

I never really got in to "The Falming Lips", always felt like a band i just didn't get. I found myself enjoying some instrumental songs like "The Gash" or the instrumental parts in "Race for the Prize" but i can't really get over the vocal style which i found a bit whiny.

I honestly can't stand Wayne's voice, and makes it incredibly hard for me to listen. Sounds like a pitcher version of the lead singer of Death Cab. I did really like the instrumentals in some, like Race for the Prize, but overall, it was not an enjoyable listen for me. Honestly, interlude-type situations can be so hit or miss and The Observer was a definite miss for me

I wanted to like it, there are some good melodies and some of the arrangements are really interesting, but the vocal performance and airy-ness of the record were too much for me to enjoy

I was excited to listen to this one but it turned out to be boring and kind of excruciating.

-omg these were the pink robot guys!!!! -excited to be listening to another album from them -never really noticed before hilarious that the band is named the flaming lips -this album sounds very similar to the other album i heard from them -i also am not as big of a fan of these songs -i remember liking the other album better than this one tho -these songs aren’t bad but just a bit boring -the gash is so far the most interesting song on the album -overall this album was not that exciting for me

Had some cool moments. Daily boring. I zoned out a lot.

ok didn't listen to all

Enjoyable moments. Bit of a mess at times. Original

Interesting. I liked one it more in beginning. Too far out there for me. Little too slow too. Weird music man. Bugs and shit. lol. Could barely listen to it tbh. But not awful.

Interesting not not for me

I listened to it on repeat today for over 2 hours and I can’t remember one song. Something about a scientist? Not one for me.

Bruh it sucked

not really my jam

Not my thing.

2, almost 1

Cliche 90s angst and oddity. Didn’t keep my attention.

The instrumentation in this album is great but I’m not a fan of the lyrics and the singer’s voice.

Couldn't get into it. Kind of disappointing.

Not a fan. Guy sounds whiny

Ooooh this wasn't my cup of tea. Flaming lips have never done it for me, Coynes vocals grate me so good. This was all a bit bubblegummy for my personal taste. Fav track: Race for the prize 2/5

Sometimes I start one of these albums and I know immediately that it's gonna annoy me, and I stop paying a lot of attention. And it's normally psych or classic rock and it goes for an hour. These are the dark times of the 1001 albums project. Probably good for those in the know, but the vocals and twee instrumentation just frustrated me. One and a half. Fave track: Feeling Yourself Disintegrate

Race for the Prize is a great opening track, the rest felt inconsequential

Very dreamy and melancholic music. Wayne Coyne's vocals are not the strongest by any stretch of the imagination and at times he lacks confidence in it.

The singer's wavery weak voice made every song sound similar and none of the music made an impression

Not terrible, but lyrics were often strange or a literal story being read out in song-form, which did not work for me.

I've tried Flaming lips, and they're just ok for me.

I liked it kinda, but mainly it was very boring and every song sounded the same.

Inoffensive but forgettable

Another one that passed over me leaving no real lasting opinion

I like the songwriting. I don't like the muddy wall-of-sound production or the singing.

Thoroughly unremarkable

I probably need to revisit this one later but I just don't understand the hype... Tame Impala does a better job at this style of psych rock.

Not even sure what genre this was, some okay songs in there but overall sounds like a mesh of one very similar song.

Kerralla kuunnellessa mielenkiinto lopahtaa ja lässähtää tasapaksuksi saman toistoksi. En tosin tiedä paraneeko pienissä erissä kuunneltuna. Reilu 2*

Ei jääny erityisesti mieleen. Jotenki soi vaan taustalla eikä aiheuttanut tunteita

Thought the album got off to a solid start with Race for the Prize. Then went into "just OK' mode. Think I've overused the word unremarkable lately, so I'll say this album was pleasant, yet unfulfilling. Maybe OK to listen to when trying to relax your mind, but even then, some times this guys voice began to annoy me a bit. Nothing outright brutal to hear, but just not my kind of listening enjoyment. I do think my beautiful wife would get into these guys and if she did, that would probably be the only times I would revisit this album or even the band. Songs I thought were good to Ok were Race for the Prize, Waiting for Superman and the Spiderbite song. I guess I rate this as just.....meh and OK. Probably won't revisit unless Mindy enjoys and I will bring to her attention I'll give this a 2 to 2.5. The number on the scorecard will be a 2 Somewhat surprising to me was the first 2 songs that played on my Spotify, after the album was complete. The Pixies, Wave of Mutilation and The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sometimes Always. Don't see either of the bands similar to Lips. But then again, I've only hard this one album by Flaming Lips. Love their name though!

2.5 Supposedly this is the moment that The Flaming Lips went from alternative rock to space-y psychedelic, and while they definitely have stuff from this period that I enjoy, this album didn’t do much for me. The production is pretty solid and does a good job of building atmosphere, but it really all runs together. Maybe that’s the point, idk, but I couldn’t pinpoint any song or even moment that stood out as particularly enjoyable. If I absolutely had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, though really I think that one just stuck out to me because it has an opening almost identical to Queen Bitch by David Bowie. Don’t feel like I have a ton else to say. The soundscape is interesting and enjoyable enough that I’d probably be willing to go up to a 3 if the album were a little shorter, but as you get closer to the end you really start feeling that one-hour runtime. That all to say, I do really, really like the songs Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and Do You Realize?? by these guys, both of which are on the follow-up to this album, so maybe this is just the very beginning of a sound and style of songwriting that the band had yet to perfect.

oke maar niet wauw, het greep vaker naast men aandacht dan dat het me wel greep

a few takeaways from this album: the songs made me sleepy… until the drums kicked in. the drums were WAY too loud in the mix for this album. i was only able to get through about four songs before i gave up. and the singer sounds like a cartoon character. not really into it.

The music on this was quite good. The singer is not and while it works for some of the songs and is stylistically appropriate, I found the voice often distracting from the music to the point of making it unpleasant.

Not their best.

Not a bad album at all, just not sure if this is the Flaming Lips album that should be on here. Personally I think they have better albums than this one. Still not a bad one I did enjoy the listen! Some songs seem to blend together on this one and not many really stand out to me. Middle of the road type of album.

This band comes to Ogden Twilight frequently, and I’ve tried them over and over, and I’m just not feeling it with this album, either. It’s serviceable but not re-listen-able.

2.5/5 Eeesh, this singer's voice really grated my nerves. It sounded like every song was out of his register. If they are your songs, couldn't you edit them so that they were in your comfortable range? Some of the actual music was very good, like the instrumental portion. Very rich and robust sounding. Not going to revisit this.

Fanger meg ikke

I've never really understood why this album is considered a masterpiece. I guess musically it is quite good, and is a significant departure from their earlier music. But I really can't stand Wayne Coyne's screechy singing for very long. The lyrics are also way too simplistic for it to be considered "one of the best albums of the 90s". I'd take Yoshimi over this any day.

Meh, I liked ‘Feeling yourself Disintegrate’ and ‘The Spark that bled’. But nothing very special, skipped most songs as I did not really like the vocals and the drums are way too heavy sometimes.

I assume his mom didn't tell him to stop singing

Today I learned I am not a fan of flaming lips.

Production good, voice good, all in all very nice but all in all just some pop album.

uuuuuh diferente ? experimental ? indie ?

I really didn’t enjoy it very forgetful

Not a big fan, nice voice but just couldnt get into it

отмечу треки The Observer и Sleeping on the Roof, которые очень выделяются по вайбу, пространство замирает и ты остаешься в этом ощущение.

The songs are all in such a high key that the singer can't reach the high notes. That's just bad execution of songs that could have worked.

Some weird concepts going on, which I like. Not good enough to make a lasting imoression

2.5 really. Bit meh.

I still don't get it. Theoretically all the parts of a great album, but it just doesn't jive with me. Maybe it's too optimistic for this cynic.

Boring.

If you don't like the voice of the singer, the (okay) music is also not pleasant.

The Soft Bulletin disappointed me. It's all a bit too whimsical and occasionally weird without any punch or purpose to it, and I can't get on with music like that. It's music made to be a background soundtrack to something much more interesting.

I like the experiment soundscapes and spacy vibes, but there are not enough hooks or emotions here to connect to. It always feels like they're building towards something that's really gonna groove...but it never quite gets there. So it's more "interesting" than it is enjoyable. "Waiting for Superman" is great, playlist-worthy track.

Just kinda annoying. I wouldn't describe it as 'dream pop', its a bit jangly and the singing is whiney and out of tune

Race for the prize- Not the biggest fan of the lyrics but catchy and luscious instrumental makes up for that👍 A spoonful weighs a ton- Bit of a confusing composition, I like riff in middle but not the rest The spark that bled- I don’t think this succeeds for me in forming a narrative The spiderbite song- Interesting percussion👍 What is the light?- cute love(?) song. Full title reeks of pretentiousness 👍 The observer- lofi study music core Waitin’ for a superman- This is just dull Suddenly everything has changed- many songs represent mundaness by grocery shopping. Wonder why that is The gash- maybe I’m just not in the mood but this seems overproduced Feeling yourself disintergrate- i was gonna like this one until i remembered the horrible intro then two remixes.. okay then This is another quite mid indie rock record. 2/5

Meh. This band has got loads of alt rock cachet, but I don’t get it. Few good singles in the catalogue, but overall too highbrow artsy fartsy conceptual bullshit for me.

Not my Album. Like every other of their Albums more. But they habe some amazing Songs. See my Spotify faves.

Pop tranquilo y algo melódico. Algo de chispa le falta. Quizás un tanto depresivo

Quite nice, but a lot of sound tinkering and little composition.

The singer’s voice isn’t working for me

It's nice, not great.

Kind of good but also kind of not good

Dull and uninteresting to me.

Why does he write about bugs so much? I don’t think he has any business being a singer or a songwriter. Some of the songs are cool. I like the observer and the gash

Not my sound, not terrible though.

I like how adventurous and unpredictable the music is but I can’t be the only one who finds his voice grating. His vocals held back a few of these songs for me. I’m sure this is a grower of an album and one listen while running errands on a Thursday isn’t going to do it justice. But there weren’t a lot of songs that I could wrap my hands around and enjoy on a first listen. I’m open to persuasion on this one but it didn’t do much for me on the initial go-around. A few tracks stood out as standalone songs: “Race for the Prize,” “Waitin’ for a Superman,” “The Gash,” “Feeling Yourself Disintegrate”

Not a bad album. Kind of like an over the top rock musical event. I think the sound overall is good but I've never been a huge fan of the band and this album continues in that. The singer's voice is a little whimpery and I think that they suffer from this thing that happens in software development- called "feature creep" where they lost in the big ideas a bit too much. It's always been my gripe with the band and this album generally has the same issue.

spark that bled was cool. overall not super into this one though

Rhythms were good, musicians talented, I just don’t think that guy should ever sing. Ever.

I'm struggling with this one - I don't like his voice at all, and it's all just a bit weird and floaty and weak.

Get a singer !!

It's ok I guess, some nice songs, but nothing really blew me away.

Desperately in need of a singer. And maybe a drummer…

Whats with the WB logo? Thought this was a movie soundtrack at first. Turns out just more indie pop-rock. Let's see... Wimpy vocalist singing through too much reverb ✅ Ambiguous or irreverent lyrics that purposely lack any emotional depth other than melancholy ✅ Everything awash in reverby synths ✅ Music that's just catchy enough to be accessible, and just creative enough to be called artsy (but only minimally so on both ends) ✅ Yep, this is your good ol' generic indie pop-rock. The only redeeming aspect of this album is some very interesting musical passages and melodies ("The Gash" is best I'd say), but unfortunately the singer really ruins every song. And the lyrics don't help none.

Pretty good single, interesting album. Loved the sound and feel, but misses that little spark.

Too soft and bland

Yea it was fine

A bit boring

I could never get past Wayne Coyne's voice. Unique but monotonous. I get that this album was a departure from their guitar-driven stuff, but it's just too whimsical for my taste.

They need to fuck that singer right off. Grating, obnoxious, terrible. How the fuck do people listen to that immature whine? The bits when he is not whining are fine.

Nice vocals but boring beat.

Was ok….

This album was overhyped in the book. I guess the songs are OK (though nothing special), but I couldn't finish the album. I find the singer's voice quite annoying and whiney, but the real offender is the mix. The drums are overbearing in volume with too much room ambience a lot of the time and the bass is much too soft. I really couln't get into this. Disappointing 2/5

“Sloppy” and “Amateur” Are perfectly fine adjectives to describe certain forms of artistic expression but not what I look for in Albums to Hear Before I Die.

Nothing particularly exceptional. The singer is quite bad and the songs are very generic.

Ah eeeehhh

More unique than what I heard before regarding arrangements, but very bizarre in different ways.

It was okay, not quite my thing.

Best Song: The Spark That Bled. The rhythm changeup that hits in the middle of the song is nice. Worst Song: The Spiderbite Song. The plodding pace, along with the basic rhyme scheme, makes this song almost feel like a Dr. Seuss book put to music. Overall: Thoughtful, well-produced music that doesn't sound as old to me as it apparently is. The vocals are almost too nasally, but they remind me of John K. Samson from the Weakerthans, which helps.

Found this boring.

I didn't know this band. It's not bad.

this album wasn't awful! but i guess i now join the many people who are confused why two flaming lips albums are on this list. i understand this list is the albums you should listen to, not the best albums ever, but i remain befuddled. it had some nice moments, but on the whole, it wasn't anything remarkable. well, that's a lie, because the spiderbite song is going to stay with me for some time.

This album was good background music while I worked, but it all just kind of blended together into one low tempo, indie blob. It was okay, but again, another "not great" from this band. Hoping there isn't a third album of theirs in this project. With the many epic artists who I am sure did not get a spot in this project, were two Flaming Lips albums really necessary? I guess the creator and I can agree to disagree.

Race For The Prize, Waitin' For A Superman.

I've never really understood the fascination people have for The Flaming Lips. This album is okay, but nothing really stands out and grabs hold of me.

Not really a fan - gave up after a few songs.

Didn't really care for this one. Kind felt like a discount version of the other 90s bands

~DJ Khaled button sound effect~ (Another one). They did their best as Flaming Lips, and the music was fine. I think in my life it's overplayed.

very reminiscent of neutral milk hotel

Whiny drivel. Shouldn't there be some minimum requirement that a singer should know how to sing?

this mama voice made me want to off myself. he was like wailing and oh just no. in the spider bite song especially it was nonstop. without the voice i’m sure it would be okay, but oh my god i cant. 1 or 2? I say 2 because genuinely the music was fine!

Put off by the vocalist and musically it just didn't resonate with me! Gave it a whirl but not really my cup of tea!

Honestly not my favorite. Drug music. Nothing against drugs, I just don't like my music sounding like drugs you know what I mean? Maybe if I was high I would've liked this one better.

Another one of these bands I've heard so much about over the years but never sat down to listen to an album start to finish. I can see the appeal here and imagine if you were a fan and invested in it it would be pretty cool. For the causal observer it's a bit inaccessible and hard to place: Do you listen to this at party or is headphones music? Had me a few times with some clever lyrics and the occasional head-bopping rhythm break, but not sure I'd come back to it anytime soon. Solid 2.5Stars

extremely psychedelic and does not make much sense unless enjoyed in an introspective moment of thought. fav song was "Race for the Prize".

Not my cup of tea. Don’t especially like the vocals.

Unlistenable.

Emoji Monday:🙂/😒 I’ve always had a like/dislike opinion on the Flaming lips. Some good music and often irritating vocals. The songs here don’t rise to the “like” level. Just pretty average. 2.5 stars and rounding down because it’s a cranky Monday morning.

First song was great to eat my mint chocolate chip ice cream to - refreshing. The rest sounded like the Flaming Lips; generally slow, and with reverb vocals. If you don't like the Flaming Lips, this album probably won't change your mind. Personally, I prefer Yoshimi & War at the Mystics.

Not my style of music, quite chaotic at times

MORTY! Why are you doing this? You had a bright future in interdimensional exploration! You could say this is experimental, or you could say it is unappealing to the (human) ear. It has the same sort of self-indulgence as prog rock but without the fun. Opening track sounds like a teacher singing nursery rhymes to the class because his boss INSISTED upon it, and he simply couldn’t afford to lose his job because he needs his health insurance and rent prices are rising, with some neat 90s beats to go with it. I like the instrumental actually. I kinda like how in Spark it changes tone several times. But it’s not exactly easy listening bossa nova for cruise ships. Spiderbite is another nursery rhyme, but with less impressive 90s beats. What is going on with the weird drum drops or whatever it is? I don’t know who would listen to this voluntarily. The Observer and The Gash are the only song I Liked™ off this album. Suddenly could’ve been great with a different singer, different melody and other lyrics. Brappappapp finds its bearings in the lofi 90s again, and I could possibly listen to it again. Over the loudspeakers in an off-brand pharmacy.

meh, seems whack

When I hear The Flaming Lips I always find myself thinking, this sounds kinda like older music. But I'm also thinking, this sounds kinda new. I would give it a 2 1/2

There was one song that I couldn't listen to (damn you Spotify). But to be honest, the album isn't all that great. Race For The Prize is the only good song on the album. 2/5 stars.

I somehow liked it way more before than now

2/5 nah.

One minute into the LP and I got my Sharpie out and prepared to mark it a "1", but the song then made a genre like change and became  enjoyable. There are many other substantive style swings both inter song and intra song. There are many classic songs with intra song style changes. A Day in the Life comes to mind where we are forced to listen to Paul's verse in the middle. Gear changes aren't always fatal but, in this case, it sounds like the band couldn't decide  what sound they wanted so they threw everything at this LP including the kitchen sink. If asked, I'd say I had an open mind with avant-garde music but perhaps not so much. It could be my loss.   The singer's voice  sounds like Wilco's or, if I can be less decade specific, like Neil Young's. While I quite like both Jeff and Neil, it's not because of their voices.

i liked a couply songs

It’s a bit shit

Not a fan of the Flaming Lips at all. But the first track on this album is the only track I do like of theirs. Not terrible music, they just bug me.

Eteeristä ja alakuloista tunnelmointia. En oikeen ymmärrä tällaista, ei uppoa.

Opening track is cool but there were quite a few moments where it sounded like a fairly standard band deliberately trying to be a bit wacky and weird. Lead singer Wayne Coyne comes across as a bit try hard too. There were a couple of "nice" songs, but ultimately a bit forgettable other than the opening track. 4/10

Un poco chillones y muy pop..

“The Soft Bulletin” by The Flaming Lips (1999) The geek who desperately wanted to be cool, not comfortable in his own skin (or why not all STEM students are artists). Sprinkled with very occasional profundity, the lyrics are outside the mainstream, reflecting thoughtfully on topics that frequently don’t merit reflection. No soul, son. They display a certain fondness for non-referential paronomasia (meaningless puns) and the kind of logical puzzles that occupied the minds of the brighter students in middle school. Not much to really grab on to. There’s one interesting and progressive reflection (“The Spiderbite Song”) on how events in other people’s lives affect their relationships with us, but it lacks depth. And the lyrical weakness is not helped by the music. Vocals are very weak (like Neil Young on a very bad day) and the engineering is flawed by both excessive separation and the fact that the percussion sounds like it was recorded on one mic in gymnasium. Hugely distracting. The composition and arrangements are creative, but the result is mere idiosyncrasy. Overusing synthetic strings, they seem to be attempting the ethereal, but end up with soggy cereal. 2/5

Could not get into this

Nothing impressive at all. The lyrics are notably weak, the singing becomes annoying, and just a lot of filler between the first and last song which are the only decent tunes. The rest is playing with synths and keyboards and guitar pedals.

Whiny, annoying. Although I did like some hipster music from that era, I never understood the draw of this band.

Can't tell if youtube music is low bitrate or the recording is just shit

Good ol Flaming Lips, but a lot of the songs kind of blend together. I like the music but get distracted by the vocals/autotuning. Couple good songs on here though. Highlights: -Race for the Prize -Waiting for a Superman

I'm sure this was ahead of it's time, so sonically speaking, but it doesnt do it for me.

Race for the prize, A spoonful weighs a ton were pretty good. Skipped spiderbite song. I honestly think they'd be better if they just stayed instrumental Yeah the observer was good. The gash

Like Arcade Fire but this wasn't really for me.

Kinda long, enjoyed the listen, need to revisit, 5/8 for now, liked the opening track a lot.

Ok, well made music not quite my taste.

Really hated the vocals on this and otherwise was only semi interested in the music

Everyone knows OF the flaming lips but tbh I can't think of anyone who actually likes them. I have a vague idea of what to expect, but interested to see what a full album is like. Ok so it's hard to listen to with headphones. The panning of the drums is off, mostly in the right and then there's a synth in the same frequencies on the left... this shouldn't have been allowed lol. And wiki is GUSHING over it... it's ok? It kinda seems like alt rock aiming for the stars. Not sure about the hype - seems more everyone thinking it's wonderful for its ambition rather than the end product. Again, it's ok. Old mate still hasn't learnt to sing since that ridiculous shit in the early 90s. 2/5 cause it's draaaaging towards the end.

Lead singers vocals are so bad I had to stop. Awful.

After the opening 2 tracks I was expecting an album I would enjoy however the album just felt meh throughout. Not a lot more to say which is a shame. Fave track- ‘race for the prize’ Worst track- unfortunately lots of contenders but I suppose if you are going to put a track on the album with no vocal then musically it should be special and ‘sleeping in the roof’ was far from being any type of unique. Very underwhelming 2/10

p848. 1999. 1 star. Whiny Neil Young vocals with meandering songs with no memorable melodies. Fuck no. "Profoundly humane" my arse.

too artsy of an album for me didn’t feel well made or easy to listen to , just not my taste I think

Not for me

Relatively speaking it's not as bad as some of the other albums I have listened to. But more than once I found myself thinking "when is this shit going to end", which I have decided is the criteria for an album getting 1 star. Generally I'm not a huge fan of alt rock. The vocals were.... unique. I questioned whether the lead singer had taken any singing lessons at some points when I felt myself grimacing during the Spiderbite Song. So uhh yeah hard listen.

I've never been into the sound of the Flaming Lips. I did not enjoy this album when it came out and listening to it today did not change my mind. While I wanted I respected the risks they took with the choice of instruments and the arrangements, alas I did not enjoy them. Also, although I usually love synthesizers and keyboards, I did not enjoy the detuned MIDI keyboards on THE SOFT BULLETIN. Ultimately it just sound so uninspired. It has been difficult to articulate what about them bothers me so much until today. Right away, on the opening track, I noticed that Wayne Coyne's voice sounds a lot like an Oklahoman Neil Young. Unfortunately, I cannot abide Neil Young's voice. Anytime either of them sings, it is so distracting that any thought what they are singing goes right out the window. I was disappointed to learn that the album title doesn't mean anything. It was just a mishear that the band though was funny. It doesn't any artistic value to the album's contents at all. This album seems very overrated to me. I am genuinely surprised by the critics enjoyment of this record. It seems like a tedious indie noodling record with outright bad singing, and too many lyrics (nonsensical and poorly written no less) crammed in just for the sake of it and not because it serves the songs. About the only thing I enjoyed was the delayed piano part in "What is the Light?" and the instrumental of "The Observer". Too me it is clear that is was definitely not one of the best albums of 1999. Artistically, THE FRAGILE was probably the best album of 1999. There is a reason that the THE SOFT BULLETIN has barely sold over the years.

Here's an example of a band that I really want to like, but just can't bring myself to do it. The lead singer is just too different to get behind. Couldn't stand the sound of this one.

I waited 58 minutes for some 🔥🔥🔥 and it never came.

not a fan/ don’t get it

Zzzzzzzzz

Not sure if I’ll like this one just based on the first song. I think the album was just too mellow for me tbh. Fav song is ‘The Gash’.

I really struggled with this one. Not a fan at all.

Almost impossibly dull and monotone

I like some of their other albums better. This one is pretty slow but I do like the first track

I forgot this album existed, but I listened to it a lot in my teenage years - mostly flying across the pacific, if I recall correctly, because I preferred something unobtrusive but with enough movement in it to keep me engaged. Things like this and post-rock were my choice. As I listened to it, i was like, "Oh yeah, this song exists." And guess what? It fuckin' sucks. This shit sucks, dude. Obviously it meant something valuable to me in my younger years but now I just hate it. The Elephant Six fuzz. The snappy drum that pops in and out. The absolutely inane lyrics and warbly, apparently emotionally-vulnerable delivery (about the fucking sun or whatever). I hate this in a way I didn't think possible. And the ultimate insult: it's an hour long of going nowhere. I had it playing in the car when I picked up my daughter and she was like, "I don't like this" and I felt blessed for a good excuse to turn it off for a bit. I don't know what caused such a sea change for me, but man I HATE this. Slog.

Didn't really like this because it became quite boring very quickly. Which is a shame, as I quite liked their other album on this list.

A flaming hot pile of...

Ah yes, The Flaming Lips. The band that proves to me every time that it's possible to be TOO progressive. Completely incapable of writing a hook. I'm sure their fans love them, but it's just musical masturbation. Cut it out. My rating: 1/5 lips.

two times flaming lips in a row. but today i'm more prepared. stopped playback before half-time...

Turgid.

Do you realize...you could've done just about anything else with that last hour?

Not interested in this afternoon 2 or 3 songs

not my style 1 5

Wasn't the greatest. thought some of the lyrics were not very good

I won't pretend I like this kind of music.

Holy fuck this was painful

What a flaccid snooze. Not a shred of personality to be found in this. Bonus "points" for the book review barely even acknowledging the album itself - the writeup describes the band's appearance at Glastonbury fest in 2000...? Like really, a 17-year-old band appearing on the New Bands stage speaks volumes, and this album backs it up: you sound like amateurs. This has no business being included here. You have wasted my time, 0 stars if I could.

This is a boring album and a slog to get through. The Flaming Lips are a bit too precious.

listening to this for an hour was akin to torture porn for me. maybe if this album was 5 minutes long it would be ok?

Who is the lead singer Kermit the frog? What an embarrassment this is. Fucking shit band. It’s like something 12 year olds listen to when they first discover music that isn’t their parent’s and think they are edgy.

I checked to make sure I hadn't accidentally hit "Repeat All" because I thought maybe it was repeating the album but there were still three songs left. We had Pink Robots so idk why we have this one too.

Off-key

The singer was so bad I had to quit halfway through, I just couldn't take it anymore

They thought "experimental music" meant experimenting with being ass lol Actually really enjoyed a song or two, but a broken clock is right twice a day and we can’t give it credit for that

nossa a voz do vocalista é insuportável kkkk nem consegui terminar

Have never liked this band. The lead vocalist is awful. Their songs are disjointed and don’t have any flow. I did like Suddenly Everything Has Changed.

Waste of time.

I remember when all I knew of the Flaming Lips was that “She Don’t Use Jelly” was funny and “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” was disarmingly endearing. Then I saw them in concert (as an opener) and was exposed to the full Lips and all of their excessive indulgence. In lyrics. In theatrics. But while some of the stage show at least keeps you engaged with wondering what ridiculous thing they’ll pull out next, the music wears out its welcome quickly. And lead singer Wayne Coyne doesn’t help. Coyne’s lyrics are insipid and I don’t like his voice. I’ve lost the ability to see it as cute, funny, or endearing. Or maybe I’m just not in the mood right now. Or maybe jumping the shark at least three different times as their opening set got more and more over the top just burned me out on the Flaming Lips forever. I’ll just take my flaming lips from spicy chips and chili crunch from here on out, thanks.

Do not like at all!

I've heard of The Flaming Lips before but never checked them out. Let's just say after this album I will need another 20+ years to listen to them again. I like indie/alternative but this album is an example of alt rock that I hate. No interesting melodies, no interesting moments, the album dragged on and I was already waiting for it to end after the 3rd song. 1/5

Flabberflabber. Slechte zang. Potten en pannen.

Do you like songs that the instruments sound better than the lyrics? If so, then this is the album for you! The background instruments sound way better than the lyrics when they were being sung. Also, the singer's voice is too quiet for the music, he needs to project more. So, that is why I recommend that you don't listen to this album.

Headbangingly dull.

Soft cock music critics wanking their shit raw to this probably. I know I’m not enjoying an album on this list if I’m constantly checking to see how much time it has left. This album is unique in this aspect as it appears to have some sort of eldritch metaphysical quality where time slows to glacial pace, as this was one of the longest 58 minutes I have experienced. There is no circumstance where I would go out of my way to listen to this. It took three attempts to get through it. I thought about why it grated me so much and I think 98% of it is the vocals. They are terrible. Of the 2% it would be the instrumental moments that just sound disjointed and nonsensical, and not in an interesting way, more like a kid playing with the default settings on a cheap Casio keyboard. The redeeming factor is that outside these parts the instrumentals are okay. The album probably would be at least a 3 without the vocal track. Special mention here of something that I couldn’t get out of my head is go to 1:17 in “A spoonful weighs a tonne”. There is a sound that reminds me of the first noise that plays in the looney tunes intro.

I really wanted to like this. I should like this. But oh my god I cannot get past these vocals. Honestly unlistenable.

This is awful. I've never purposefully listened to the flaming lips. The guy cannot sing to save his life... there is hope for me yet!

Never heard this album. I wasn't prepared for lyrics written by 2nd graders or music created by AI. Wait, this crap was created by grown-ass adults? With 8 previous albums under their belt? Also, no more mentioning Superman in a song. That should have been outlawed in about 1990. But here we are, songwriters can't help themselves. "I stood up and I said, yeah".

STANDOUTS: n/a OVERALL: 1.5/5—won't return to ANYTHING here.

Oh my god. No hope for America. LOL!!!

Ok, dit is dus wel echt bagger. Ontzettend saai album waar echt vrijwel niets gebeurd.

Not my thing Find it boring and sinply not a good voice. Lyrics are alright but nohing life changing.
