Reviews (page 5 of 8)
This was cool and interesting, but definitely lacking. I do like the experimental and dance elements of the record. It mostly just makes me want to listen to The Cure or Talking Heads or one of their contemporaries. However, upon second listening, I think I can kind of see through it a bit. It has fun harmonies and vibey, dreamy space elements. Its fun. I think this one probably gets better the more time you spend with it.
Fine
A pleasant album, but nothing exceptional for the time.
Decent synth-pop dance record. Not much more to say. 3/5
Early industrial goodness
Overall I enjoyed it but it didn’t blow me away
Quite enjoyable. A bit poppy and not particularly musically complex, though, at least for my tastes. It reminds me of Depeche Mode, but this album certainly isn't as good as something like Violator, so it's a 3 for me, although a strong one. Somehow I haven't listened to much New Order, so I'm not sure how this stacks up to their other stuff. For some reason I thought they were more of a rock band. My favourite songs were Run and Mr Disco.
Pretty solid
Fine but no hits
Nice early edm, but it slides back to Joy Division's sound now and then, which really wasn't necessary. It wouldve been a better album if they kept the focus of the first track.
Liked it. So much dark music and this was nice and light amd popy
This is really just the demo from my 3rd grade keyboard, incredible
Didn’t really feel it. If I were a 40 yo on Ibiza chugging on some mdma, would enjoy it more. Dream attack was really good tho
Slightly disappointed. These all feel like songs they’ve made before.
While I’m a fan of New Order, this was not my favorite album. I’ve listened to the Substance album more times than I can count, but this may be just the second or third time I’ve ever listened to this one. Not terrible, but nothing that I was really moved by.
80’er dance rock, elektronisk, egentlig fedt nok, virker lidt forud for sin tid
some nice tunes, overall not bad.
All The Way is a great song
Some of the beats were nice and jaunty, but the vocals/lyrics were a little emo for me. If I’m going in that direction I’m going to go full Cure.
Bit of a middling one from New Order. Missing a couple of big bangers.
# Playlist Track - Fine Time # Notes - Really enjoyed the 80's vibes and the overall rhythm! - Not my favourite, but definitely worth the listen.
Bit of an identity crisis on this album, it constantly flip flops between dance heavy synth pop to the more post-punkish vibes of their earlier albums. But still, I dig it.
Aw man this started SO high and I thought I could have a new 5 star album! Then it dropped off so fast :(
Etwas unentschlossen das Album.
Joya de New Order. Me gustaron los sintes y como el mismo bajo lleva la batuta en algunas canciones introduciendo ondas mas bailables.
New Orfer definitely has better albums, but this was a fun, poppy, new wave listen.
I’ve always liked New Order. They have a clean sound, both music and vocals. And despite being a front runner of the “new wave” era, they never sounded overly mechanical to me like many of the Casio-synth bands of the decade.
Screaming out of 1989, it's a solid OK.
Not bad - better than expected for a later era album. I mean there’s a reason none of these songs is in the list of top singles on Spotify…but if something came up on shuffle I wouldnt object.
Enjoyable album, though it does not have any songs with a lasting impact like other New Order albums. Great vibe, but you can't actually tell one song from another. Three-and-a-half-star record.
They were quite forward thinking. You can hear the transition into the 90s. I just don’t like it, his voice is horrible
Really just not much stood out to me from this album. Sure it was good, but it just wasn’t all that interesting or impressive to me.
Just okay for me.
It was fine. But not really much more than that.
1. Fine Time: immediate funky/disco/dance vibes from those heavy drums and synths. This is super brain tickly. Lyrics talk about meeting someone compatible, minus their age difference, being too old for this young girl. Or potentially someone too young taking drugs in a club sorta sense... Not quite sure. Either way, super dance song, insane way to start the album. No wonder the album dominated the acid house movement in Britain in the late 80s/early 90s. 2. All the Way: the guitar riff and effect are great, crisp vocals. The chorus is dancey and light, despite the deeper lyrics. The chorus resonates with my spot in life right now, "it takes years to find the nerve to be apart from what you've done"; "to find the truth inside yourself and not depend on anyone." This is an upbeat song with an empowering message. 3. Love Less: clapping drums start the song off strong. The vocals are so clean thus far. The guitar riffs are soft and keep the upbeat tone. Pretty sad lyrics about someone moving forward, who used their lover, despite giving them everything. The ending was not amicable and left the other questioning why they are now enemies. I love the bass line. 4. Round & Round: damn crazy start, I feel like lasers are shooting everywhere. Super late 80s dance iconic sound. The drums hit, and I love how the BPM is high for this album. I guess this was about a failing marriage, but it turned into addressing frustrations about the record label owner, using money for dead-end projects. Big techno at the end, the drums give such a big buildup. I can imagine dancing in a colorful disco-esque club. The end tickled my brain a ton, I love the way it had an 8D effect in my headphones. 5. Guilty Partner: the bass is very on brand for New Order. The lyrics have me feeling a bit sad. Sounds like their love is addictive, and it's a craving for more. A mad despair of hopeless devotion. He is gaslighting himself to justify his addiction. The loud drums and bass add to the darkness of coming to this realization. Gaining awareness of his partner being the guilty partner. Definitely relates to the last track in a relationship sense. 6. Run: the lyrics touch on a person having issues with working hard for all they want and still being dissatisfied with their life. The guitar solo into the instrumental outro fits this weird feeling of wanting more, yet having everything you'd ever want. Almost like continuing onto a non-existent destination. The drums keep this a strolling kinda tempo. The bass is my favorite, along with that chorus guitar riff. 7. Mr. Disco: BASS. BASS. BASS. YES. Thumping drums to get the song started. Dreamy, soft vocals. "I can't find my piece of mind/without you" resonates with my life right now. Maybe discussing the struggles of a touring musician and his lover. The synths and bow bows (laser sounding thing) rock. Or the ending of a long-term love, and being unable to find them after separating. I have read that this album is inspired by a divorce. The instrumental bridge is wild and feels like aimlessly trying to find someone in a chaotic crowd. The whispers at the end with the static, "never found you," into the void-sounding end. 8. Vanishing Point: POUNDING drums get this going. The synth and bass intro keep me bopping along. I think this is about growing up in a toxic household and learning to heal from that trauma as an adult. The tone of the synth is sorta eerie yet still dancey as fuck. Anytime there are chimes with synth, I'm in. "I've seen what a man can do, I've seen all the hate of a woman too," - nodding towards a toxic family, though you must continue to persevere and grow. 9. Dream Attack: a lot lighter drums in the beginning, the bass is thrusting forward more. Lighter energy is being brought. Guitar is super chill sounding, I like the tone a lot. Themes of issues with commitment, yet wanting someone to be fully devoted...He is acknowledging that he cannot change, despite wanting to be with someone who already is in love. I love the main riff. And the way the tone of the bass changes in the chorus. Synths build up this internal indecision. The guitar solo is fabulous. Not the ending that I was anticipating for this album; it was a lot more chill. Still a great dance track, not as psych/acid house feeling IMO. This album will keep your head bopping, and I felt like I was in a dance club most of it. Lyric and theme-wise, reflection and heartache. Along with growing awareness. Kinda acceptance vibe with the dance heavy instrumentals.
This is a fine album! One thing I’ve learned through this challenge is that prefixing a genre with “dance-“ usually makes it better, and this is one of those cases. I liked the various influences on the sound. However, it was just not that memorable for me. Favorite Track: Run
Apparently is the same musicians from joy Division. Not
Beep, bop, boop! Love me some New Order, just not very often.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Dancy but good shit.
The album to reach for if you like the Cure but want your melancholy slightly more uptempo.
This definitely filled a chronological missing link in my understanding of New Order between the early stuff I've come to love and the very first New Order I ever heard, the 2001 song "Crystal" (you know, the one with the video with the fake band making fun of The Strokes and Interpol from which The Killers took their actual name???)
Had a "fine time" listening but this lacked some sort of edge I typically enjoy about New Order
Very 80's. Okay listen, nothing extraordinary.
This was an average listen, enjoyed run and a couple of others. Just constantly felt I could be listening to better bands in the same genre
Easy to listen to but a bit one note.
First track was great. It then went no where pretty quick. Some good tracks but nothing too exciting
Round & Round and Run is good. Struggling to vibe
I liked this album. I thought some of the songs seemed like it was their bands version of x band's song. When I realized that they were formed from remaining members of Joy Division, some of that made sense. I did enjoy the album lyrically, and it was nice to move around to while making dinner. 3.25
i quite like this, a little bored, but the smiths vibe all over!!! especially guilty partner thats so morrissey, but i dont think i’d listen for the sake of listening, the outros are really good but they drag like an insane amount
okay so i dont know why but this has reminded me of the smiths a little bit especially the second song. liking the guitar in it though. first songs lyrics was very drowned out.
was fine!!! nothing really stood out to me but had a good sound overall, reminded me of like a techno cure which was fun!
Erster Song war anstrengend und dann hab ich es gelassen
A good album that I’ve never heard before.
I like New Order in general, but this album combines my favorite and least favorites parts of 80s music in a way that invokes a purely neutral reaction in me. A true pH 7.
I bet this used to slap when the coke was flowin
Pretty good
3.0 I found this slightly dull, but inoffensive. Most tracks very similar. Much better Joy Division/New Order out there so not sure how this made the list.
It is quite a pleasant record, but ultimately I find it a bit boring. Electro-pop can be lacking in emotion and that's what I find here. If there were some big ideas or something that would be another matter, but this is just pleasant dancehall fodder. Nothing excites me, nothing offends me, nothing challenges me. There's nothing terribly wrong with making a pleasant record, of course, it's just not my thing.
Gotta have the right look to really get into this - that 80s emo look. I don’t have it. Not gonna try.
It's a good album. Typical 80s music. 3/5.
Not really my vibe. It's fine but lacks energy and excitement, in my opinion. This is just background music.
I like new order
It’s fine
I can't claim that I disliked listening to this, it just didn't strike me as anything special, or as good as Low-Life. The Cure-esque guitar numbers and cheap-rave-synth tracks coexist once again, but they hadn’t really worked out how to mesh them together so it doesn’t sound like two different bands. 2.5 / 3
It sounds unique, and it's an interesting album, but not for me.
It's pretty okay, I've liked it, but it also doesn't feel much special. The best moment of this album comes when it sounds like Violator from Depeche Mode - but then, Violator came after this album.
80’s band, with sounds from that decade. Some decent music.
I seem to have invoked New Order by semi-slagging them in the previous album's review (for Adam and the Ants' "Kings of the Wild Frontier"), so I'll try not to jinx myself too much in this review, although I have to say that New Order often feels like a slightly peppier version of The Cure (which I hope I don't get tomorrow). I think the only tracks I'm familiar with on this album is "Round & round", which had a fairly good run on the radio, at least in a slightly different version than the album version (although I was kind of disappointed when I realized that it wasn't the earlier and much more effective ear-worm "You spin me round" by Dead or Alive). I don't think I'd heard "Fine time" before, and listening to the song and watching the video was surprisingly creepy, especially with some poor kid being asked to seem...crazy? neurodivergent? unstable? perhaps even abused? I'm not really sure, but I find it hard to believe that anyone would make a video like that in the years since (and I'm not sure why it was OK to do that even in 1989, frankly). All in all, this is about what I'd expect from New Order, so it neither disappointed nor delighted me. Faint praise, I know, but I'm thankful it's not another Morrissey album, or Duran Duran! (And I'm laughing now that I look at my review for their other album in this collection ("Low-Life") and how similar these two reviews are...)
Fun to feel like it's 1989 and I'm wearing Esprit cargo pants and a Benetton sweater....
7/10 Favorite Tracks: Round & Round, Run Least Favorite Tracks: Fine Time, All The Way, Love Less
good
It was ok
Meh, it's just an ok album 2.5 - 3 ⭐
So 80s. Kinda dull.
Coooles Ding jeder Song bleibt irgendwie drin und ist entweder catchy oder mindestens tanzbar
By the late '80s, a scene that can only be described as "Madchester" had hit it's peak. Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, and New Order were making psychadelic-as-fuck rave music that would go on to influence house music into the '90s. In the meantime, Technique. Definitely unique as far as dance music, as it pulls many of the rhythmic influences from post-punk to make it groovy, but leans deep into the synthesizer. Truth be told this one didn't grab me as much as I had hoped. New Order is a cool band and I wish I liked them more. The last track, Dream Attack, is a killer though. What a mood.
La première track est vraiment excellente, te laissant espérer que la suite sera au même niveau, mais hélas! il n'en ai rien, rien de plus qu'un autre album new wave à cocher de cette liste
39/1001 - Before listening: Sometimes I'd try to imagine what the worst possible yet acceptable music is. Drum beats that aren't quite in time, messy guitars all over the place, random whooshing synths, incoherent vocalist, etc. Anyways, I listened to Joy Division and it was the bad music I was imagining the whole time! That being said, one of my friends said New Order is better than Joy Division so I'll do my best to be unbiased. After listening: comes across to me as unfocused to have okay rock songs and dance songs. Maybe if the songs were inter-weaved (like the piano and IDM in "drukQs" by Aphex Twin) I'd like it more. Definitely better to my ears than "Unknown Pleasures" was.
Tweede New Order op rij. Deze is wel minder
Great album
fun but simply too 80s for moi
Better than I expected.
I quite liked it, but I'm not sure how re-listenable it is. Solid right-down-the-middle album.
nice
3/5, guilty partner, vanishing point e run Le migliori
Typical new order album
I like New Order a lot but this one isn't my favourite. It's still good, but I much prefer some of their earlier albums. Very dance inspired but still familiar New Order sounds. Fav tracks: All the Way, Run, Love Less
It's alright for me, has some good moments Will I listen to again: 20%
Yet another "nice enough background listening" one.
It was ok, very end of an era sound.
Er ikke glad for 80’er lyden især guitaren og ISÆR måden at synge på og lyden på den. Men er vild med syretheden og techno delen. Fede beats og weird lyde. Første sang var fed, Mr. Disco kunne også noget. 2,6
Compared to my recent run of albums, listening to this was basically a warm bubble bath for my ears. Objectively though, while enjoyable enough, it isn't especially groundbreaking or benchmark setting or needing to be heard before I die.
Didn't mind this but not quite my thing
I read Peter Hook’s autobiography. I know exactly how much Ecstasy they were using while this album was being made. I would’ve expected it to be even more joyous. Perhaps this is joyous for New Order. It’s lovely and peppy. It’s just not as catchy as I would’ve thought it could’ve been.
Favorite Track: All The Way
very solid album extremely good bass work but no specific standouts.
A really good album. Nice and electronic and a timely listen for me since I’d just watched a shirt doc about new order and electronica.
Kinda meh honestly. All the songs kind of sounded the same until the last track which I actually kind of liked.
I found this very patchy. New Order are always a bit hit and miss, but underneath it all were quite interesting and ground breaking, in many ways, but this fell a bit flat on me.
Gave this two listens, as opposed to my one-take reaction. I liked it more the second time around. I will say the opening of "Fine Time" did sound a lot like "Funkytown". That was kinda weird. It does sound kinda like something from the 80s, but it wasn't all electronic. I wasn't the "goth" kid, so a lot of this stuff I kinda missed. It may be something I look into more of, but the songs did not stick with me. That does not bode well for the album, if I can't pull out something memorable (besides the "Funkytown" thing.) Top tracks: "A Fine Time", "Round & Round," "Mr. Disco"
Over 800 albums ago I listened to Low-Life and then proceeded to listen to a bunch of New Order to figure them out. I said then that I thought that was their best album and I gave it a 3.5 (rounded up). I still agree with that assessment. New Order themselves admit that they kept leaning into their synth-dance side on this album and that wasn't my favorite part of earlier New Order - I preferred their new wave, post-punk rock side. This is a fine uhn tiss, uhn tiss, uhn tiss album but it gets a little monotonous. Round & Round was their most fun dance number. But I would've liked more dance-rock blends like All the Way, Love Less, Guilty Partner, and Dream Attack - and a little more rock than dance on those too. Their best blend was on Run - really enjoyed it (yay real guitars and real riffs). This album is probably slightly higher than a 3 but not a 3.5.
This album has a split personality. About half the tracks are dance/electronica (Fine Time, Round & Round, Mr. Disco, Vanishing Point), while the other half are typical 80s UK pop-rock band. The latter sound is a logical evolution from Joy Division to New Order, although the songs are a bit generic (and certainly not as dark as Joy Division). I think I'd give the "regular" 80s UK pop-rock band songs a 3. I find I don't like electronica/dance music so I think I'd give the dance tracks a 2 (with the exception of Vanishing Point, which is kind of in between the two genres on this album). I'll go with the 3 because I enjoyed most of the album, but don't see myself seeking it out again. Favorite tracks: All the Way, Love Less, Guilty Partner.
Very 80s. 3/5
Late 80s Synth Pop. The album itself is entertaining and thankfully doesn't wear out it's welcome since it's only a little over a half hour long. By this time in the 80s, this music is begging for some edge and bite to it, but this album is comfortable to stick around in the years preceding it.
This is pretty lame, electronic like british alternative rock? It's not aggressively bad, but it's just kinda boring. Maybe it was groundbreaking or something, but I don't love it.
Good but not the best new order lp
3 ok
Pretty cool. Great production. Curious to hear more from them that has more melodic focus.
This is #day146 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... how about an acid house album from New Order? Or a kind of poppy Cure-like album, if you will? In Technique, you get both, and that’s probably its most divisive aspect. I prefer the alternative dance vibes, though. Some of the highlights for me include "Fine Time," "Round and Round," and "Run." Unfortunately, the rest of the album sounds like New Order on autopilot. Maybe it’s because it’s the first day of January, while, according to Peter Hook, this album captures a summer sound brilliantly that I’m not fully feeling it. Still, the band's performance at Rock Werchter 2019, which I was lucky enough to witness, remains one of my brightest memories ever, especially when they started playing Joy Division songs. Yes, I've heard "Shadowplay," "Transmission," and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" live. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day147.
This is just plain silly, but something about the production goes just over the edge enough to catch my ear! It's fun again. It's not just pure camp, there's something that's a little reckless about it, in a way that a lot of this drum-machine-led 80's music just isn't. I like that it's so silly, on some level. This is a clear template for a lot of indie records I've enjoyed, down to the slightly phoned-in lyrics and vocals. 3/5 for a good time.
MY GOD THE SYNTHESIZERS. It’s like they went Black Friday shopping at Moog and decided to use it all on this album. A couple songs in, I was getting Cure vibes but after that, it was straight into stereotypical 80s pop. But, honestly, I don’t hate it. Guilty Partner is a good track and the Spanish guitar is a nice feature. Favorite song: Round and round
This is the Cure for me!
I listened to this wearing my New Order T-shirt, holding a cat and a glass of beer. The album is OK though.
First track is the worst. The rest is enjoyable. Nothing groundbreaking.
Late 80s synths all sound like pee wees playhouse to me
A good album, but not New Order's best
80s disco. Meh.
Solid album. Could see myself getting more into this band
The 2nd New Order album and looking back on my old review, my thoughts still apply. Generic, bland, tepid. Not all that interesting. At least it is short is all I can say.
B-Tier album that doesn't seem to quite know what it wants to be. Good, but far from their best work.
I like New Order but this album falls a little flat for me because the poetry doesn't feel as inspired as some of their other songs. One of the least listened to songs on this album is Guilty Partner. It's not that great of a song. But I absolutely love the melodic bass playing on that song. I have a guilty pleasure for Guilty Partner. The thing I like best about this band is their melodies and the way they weave guitar & synth. I thought Run was pretty good but the rest was just okay.
I wanted to like this more, and listened to it multiple times in hopes of that happening. But it just kinda sounds like the same thing over and over, without any particularly catchy tunes. It’s still New Order, and I like their sound and their vibe, but wasn’t grabbed by anything.
The drum machine grates after a while - high-pitched harmonics that almost but not quite set my teeth on edge. Aside from that, there's some decent rhythm and song-writing in here
I was right in that I've never heard any song on this album before even if I was familiar with the bands name. I'm also not sure I've ever heard sheep bleats mixed into a song, but here we are. Some solid foot-tappers and chair dancers mixed in there. Some really fun baselines, and drum tracks. Dream Attack feels like the music from a space shooter arcade machine. Overall it was definitely a fun listen.
This is what I’m supposed to be popping my tits and touching dicks to at the clurb.
Why does this sound like the soundtrack to NBA Jam?
It’s very nostalgic, but not particularly enjoyable outside of that. The songwriting is adequate.
Like Depeche Mode dance music. I always preferred the Depeche Mode depression-inducing music. It's good stuff, but not something I would listen to. New Wave/Disco. 3.5/5
I want to like this more than I actually do. Not sure it has aged so well. Think I’m more of a singles girl when it comes to New Order. Want to give it a 3.5
Some tracks I enjoyed, most of this felt so cluttered. Who can push the most demo buttons on a new yamaha keyboard.
I've seen Peter Hook live and he is clearly a major player in the music industry over many decades. I love Joy Division and New Order but for me this album has too much acid house influence but saying that I didn't dislike it
Not the best New Order album by a long way, but still decent.
Favorite Track: All the Way
New order is just simply not my vibe. I can objectively listen to it and say it’s a decent album even though it’s just not for me. I was in high school when this album came out and I did not care for it and I don’t really care for it now.
Actually turned out to be a solid album. Had a good time listening to it, I went in with no expectations not having heard them before and I liked it.
Solid album. I enjoyed this. I think this was solidly on the 3.5 mark.
OK, pleasant but not really special
First listen. Ok.
3.5 I quite enjoy a lot of New Order’s earlier stuff, but it seems this album marks them heading in more of an electronic, dance pop direction - which is not exactly my preferred genre of music, but I still feel like this has just enough of that familiar, New Order charm to it that it’s still mostly enjoyable. I mean, there’s nothing here that supersedes songs like Blue Monday, Bizarre Love Triangle, or my personal favorite, Age of Consent, but overall, everything here is mostly solid (it probably helps that I’m a big fan of Bernard Sumner’s voice). Though, at the risk of being THAT guy, I did tend to enjoy the stuff here that had more of a bassy, synth hook to it reminiscent of their earlier work, with Guilty Partner probably being my favorite track on the album (no idea how that’s the least streamed song on Spotify). Don’t have a ton much else to say on this beyond that. Definitely not my favorite New Order album, nor is it even probably Top 3, but it’s still mostly enjoyable - from what I’ve gathered about the group, I don’t really think you can go wrong with most anything they have. I do think there’s missing a sort of song here that defines the album or really stands out on its own, but as a whole, it’s at least a consistent album that doesn’t outstay its welcome.
Leuk maar niet zó bijzonder. Niet helemaal geluisterd.
Never listened to an entire New Order album before, just the isolated bangers. The album as a whole was good though, I enjoyed it.
I should love this album because it's late 1980s and acid house, but I was a bit disappointed in it. Perhaps it sounds too dated, or some songs are too lazy, I don't know. It got better by the end but it isn't entirely my thing, even if it wasn't that bad either.
This is my first time hearing this record. The instrumentals are interesting but the vocals and songwriting feel a bit irritatingly lazy.
Very 80's. More fun than expected
I've listened to New Order before. Back then, I was really into wave, electronic and gothic music. In the meantime, my taste has changed somewhat. I was able to listen to the album well. It didn't bother me, but it didn't excite me either. I probably won't listen to it again. 3/5
I generally do not care for the electronic genre, but parts of this aren’t too bad. 2.5 rounded up since I’ve had so many bad ones lately, but could have rounded down since I wouldn't seek to listen to this again.
Seems like a copy of a lot of alternative bands at the time mixed with electronic type stuff here and there. Really sounds like R.E.M. one song, The Cure another, The Smiths on another, U2 on another. If it wasn’t for this list I wouldn’t be as familiar with this period of music. Kinda thinking this new order album is a bit of a slacker effort.
New Order is great, but songs start to sound monotonous. Driving forward always, but a little too similar from one to the next.
Some of this is quite infectious, mostly because of Hooky's driving melodious bass lines - but it's still lrimarily dance music, which just isn't my sort of music.
Bland and forgettable, that's the best I can say about this album. Three stars is generous, but I'll give them up because there was nothing that offended my sense of musical taste.
I highly recommend that you listen to this with a good DAC and headphones. The separation is really intriguing.
Always enjoy the uniqueness of New Order
This made me want to throw some mid-morning shapes - never a good idea. It's a fun album, something that you can't always level at New Order. The bass sounded ACE. I bloody love this band.
A mixed bag for me. I thought I'd like this more, based on the New Order songs I know - but I had never listened to a full album. It is a good album, but not very coherent. Some songs are just too much like run-off-the-mill electro-pop songs. This album sounds quite cheerful which I can't blame the band for, but I like a bit darker, heavier, more atmospheric sound. I feel this should be on the list when seen in its late 1980's context, though.
A nice journey back to the 80's for me
I got low-life before. This is a lot better. Especially the singing. Still not great, but good enough. During the first track I hoped the rest of the album would be different. Fortunately it was. Most bands who try to combine indie rock and dance music fail miserably, but except for the first track this album sounds reasonably coherent. Favorite song: run.
6.5/10
meh. this record felt like they discovered one sound, and decided to milk it for all it was worth. as my introduction to new order, i thought - incorrectly - that it would be a bit more joy division-esque. the odd mix of 80s pop, with ibizan club music didn’t really work in my opinion. there were a couple of more redeeming tracks - both ‘all the way’ and ‘love less’ were more along the lines of what i was expecting from this album. i can’t honestly say i would want to listen to this again, but i hope there are other new order albums on this list that can help redeem their image.
This keeps happening. I want to love this but I just don’t. It’s maybe a perfect example of you needed to be there at the time.
80’s new wave sounds
New wave. Not New Order’s best
An old friend, still sounds just as fresh today - but not really full of killer tracks
Strong 80s vibes from this one; I quite enjoyed this but nothing truly stood out for me. I wouldn't mind listening to it again, but it's probably not an album that will ever cross my mind once I move on to the next one in this project. 3.5 stars
Don't like the first track at all and was worried I'd hate an album by a band I like a lot. The rest is ok, saved from the bog of 80s dance pop by the band's great sense for simple melody and some cool guitar sounds. first song: hated. (⌐■_■)
Pretty glad they bailed on overcommitting to the Ibiza thing after just one song. The rest was a pretty fun New Order record.
Thoughts before listening: Outside of the hits, I have a pretty big blind spot in my music knowledge for New Order. I know they were formed after Joy Division's lead singer died and have a more dancey/new wavey sound than that band. I also know they get a lot of praise from music journalists. I tend to prefer the new wave bands that lean more on the punk side of things instead of dance, so this may not be for me. Review: After the first song I was a little worried that this was going to be a complete dance, techno album. However, that first song is really not indicative of the album as a whole. By the second song "All the Way" I found a sound reminiscent of poppier songs by the Cure which is a very good thing to me. The music and melody is definitely led by the bass, but it has an organic, rock band feel as opposed to the first track's synthy, computer generated sounds. There are a few more tracks on here that dip into the techno feel, but overall I enjoyed this. 3-stars
Didn't recognize any of the songs but thoroughly enjoyed it...would listen to it again.
I'm not sure I've ever heard the album in its entirety. This is a serviceable album. The song I recognized, Round & Round, is a different version than the single. I prefer the single version. Not bad, but not that memorable. I rate it a 3-minus. "Hey, sophisticated lady"
Classic 80's sound. A little more obscure than their other albums. Not a bad listen.
A baffling addition to the list of 1001 albums to hear before I die. Half of it sounds like my brain during a headache. The other half sounds like new order.
bleep bloop 66
Kind of like a pop cure
I feel like I could get into New Order, but this makes me less interested. Not bad, just unremarkable.
One of my favorite band’s album that was just ok. But they’re great.
It’s okay - definitely not as good as the ones I really like by New Order. I think this record needs a little more punch and bite. I guess I’m more of a Joy Division/early New Order kind of guy
Not my favourite New Order album. Much prefer Substance. Truly it is a very 80s album and hasn’t aged as well as Substance.
Generally upbeat synth pop. Works better for me when they emphasis the pop over the synth. Highlights: "All the Way" (poppier with a bouncy bassline, definite pop Cure vibes), "Love Less" (similar to the previous song, but it's a sound that works for them. The breezy arpeggiated guitar work is cool), "Guilty Partner" (there's a weird dissonance between the music and the vocals that is interesting. Something about it reminds me of the vibe of Achtung Baby) Notable: "Fine Line", "Round & Round", "Mr. Disco" (the synth side of the album is the last gasps of 80s dance music--bleeps, bloops, and vocoders--oh my!), "Vanishing Point" (still dancey, but sounds less dated with deep bass, synth drums, and piano riffs)
3.5
Squishy
Not a bad album. Not a great album. It does seem unrelentingly happy though.
The timing for me to get this one is such a coincidence, considering I saw Peter Hook perform at a festival a week ago today. The album is upbeat and funky, but there are some tracks that seem more like background music without any progression. Highlights: All The Way Round And Round Mr Disco
LCD is pretty ok by me. Easy listening, and made me groove a couple times.
Dancy
After a truly awful opening this improved considerably. Plenty of the hallmarks of the band in evidence.
I'm so torn between 3 and 4 stars. I love New Order and am a sucker for 80s synth pop. I know this is supposed to be more acid house, but I honestly don't have anything to compare it to in that context. I googled acid house albums and didn't recognize anything in a quick pass. It's 3.5, but I'll round down to 3 because I like the other New Order albums I've heard more. Still really enjoyed this a lot though.
Was just OK. I love this genre/era of music but I wasn't overly wowed by this album.
Better than expected
Not too bad at all. Kind of like a moodier Pet Shop Boys, although I know these guys predate them by a fair bit. This still isn’t really my kind of music, but this was very listenable.
Still good but sounds a little cheesy now
A collection of attention grabbing synth sounds punctuated by occasional greatness lack a pop hit like Blue Monday.
I'm mostly familiar with their Substance compilation which I think is brilliant, but much to my surprise this is a drastically inferior offering. I don't know if I missed something, but this wasn't really good.
I love the first albums of New Order, but at this point they really changed their sound to fit more into the nightclub scene of the time and I don't enjoy it as much as their early releases.
Nice melancholic and dance mood overall, very easy to listen and move our head to the beat. It's a cool synthpop take by New Order, but it lacks something catchy. It seems the album can't engage the listener totally.
Fun, but it's just not Joy Division.
It was fine.
This album felt disjointed. Some songs were slow 80s love ballads, and others were dance house electronica ragers, and to me, the genre jump from song to song made for an album that didn't feel cohesive. Some of the music was fun, and I enjoyed listening to several of the songs for pump-up jams.
This album feels a little bit like New Order are on autopilot, and I can't help but blame the era in which this album was conceived. The late 80s are the bane of my existence, and it just feels as though every act from the time either got worse or was never good to begin with, save for some harder rock sounds exploding on to the scene at the time, and this album is no exception. It feels like if you put "New Order" into an AI generator, this is what would be spit out, a multitude of tracks that are certainly synth-y and melancholic, but lack that extra push to be something truly worth experiencing. However, despite this, I find New Order's aesthetic to remain relatively intact to a degree where none of the songs are bad. There's plenty of weird, poorly aged sounds, but the general idea is still there and accounted for, so if you like that "party at a funeral" vibe, you may get that here just as much as Power, Corruption & Lies or Low-Life, but it is clear that New Order has forgotten most of their roots, and it can lead to a solid, but mind-numbing experience where you only recall their older, BETTER tracks.
not my thing
It's okay, I was expecting more tbh.
kinda interesting
This is definitive 80s.
6/10. Not really my thing. The singing style made it feel corny to me a bit but I did hear some good beats through. And Run made the 5⭐️ song list. It got better as it went a bit with some songs having less electronics and monotone singing.
One instantly recognizes the resemblence to "True Faith", the hit single that was never released on a regular album, but preceded the production of Technique. Productionwise, Technique was much better than Substance. The tracks are ok, nothing outstanding, but nothing bad, either.
Haven’t heard this in 30 years. Fine Time actually holds up, sounds better now. All the Way sounds like The Cure’s Close to Me. It’s not my favorite New Order. This is fun and had a bunch of hits. But mostly, it feels like they had a little too much fun with the samples on the Casio. It’s a little too basic for such an influential band.
Better than I expected.
Great production and could be fun for some people, I imagine, but wholly uninteresting to me, personally. 3/5
Charmingly dated. That is, half the instrumentals sound like 90s computer adventure game MIDI files being played out. I find the sound quite endearing, but I imagine others (especially those younger than me) might not. There are a few good key tracks ("Round & Round", "Dream Attack") but it just feels a little too 80s and a little too meh overall. Still, not a horrible listen.
Quite a departure from their other work.
Sometimes it was like 50% Hugh Grant’s pop band (Pop!) in Music & Lyrics, 50% Challengers soundtrack. I don’t know if I really enjoyed that
I listened to this on a cassette for the full effect
Solid album that I enjoyed more than I thought it would. Definitely an 80's album and not one that really stood out as ground breaking to me. The first song made me think I was at the jellyfish rave with SpongeBob. Probably won't be pursuing more of their music but I wouldn't complain if it was on.
Some cool techno stuff, but not for me
Alright album. Some strong highs.
Didn't love it, didn't hate it.
Ended up listening to a lot of Joy Division so that's a plus
Important album by an important band. But their best work (Blue Monday, Bizarre Love Triangle) is not this album and some of the bands they influence do what they do better
Technique by New Order is a mixed bag, showcasing both the band's strengths and weaknesses. While their synth-pop outings like Fine Time and Mr. Disco maintain the band's trademark energy, Bernard's vocals often seem lost amidst the pulsating beats and electronic flourishes. However, it's the album's forays into indie territory where New Order truly shines. Tracks like Love Less is where Bernard's voice finds its footing, delivering lyrics with conviction. The sporadic melodies and intricate rhythms of the dancier tracks may be harder for him to navigate, but when the tempo slows, his vocals soar. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 3 STAND OUT TRACK - Love Less
Molto interessante, ma non ha nulla che spicca.
Cool
It’s ok but it’s far from New Order’s best. Their fifth and final album of the 80s and somehow the one that sounds the most dated - it’s a quite jarring mix of decent but uninspired melancholic jangle pop tracks and fun but hit and miss dance rock cuts with some of the worst synth and drum machine sounds of the era
3/5 Best Track: ??? (didn't pay attention tbh)
Cue Squidward lying on the ground yelling, "FUUUTUUURE, FUUUTUUURE, FUUUTUUURE." This sounds like what every 'new age' band thought they were going to be putting out when they embarked on modernizing rock and it is a truly innovative album. They tried a lot of really wild sounds. Sometimes it feels like a every changing soundscape that keeps you interested in the song Fine Time, other times it sounds like the soundtrack to the game Bust-a-move like in Round & Round. Something you can definitively say is that they don't take a song off. I give them points for creativity and really good execution.
let's go to the mall pero mal
It was alright but not really my thing.
This is a classic don’t judge a book by its cover situation. From listening to Fine Time, I really thought that I was going to DNF this one. But then All The Way and Love Less came on and I actually really loved them! Run is also a good one! There were a few too many electronica songs for me to rate it more than a 3. The songs that i liked, I REALLY liked. But the songs that I didn’t like, I hated.
Manche Lieder zu viel Synthiesound. Gibt bessere. Nur Durchschnitt.
If I were 5 years older I have no doubt I’d be a huge new order fan. This was nice. 3, but is very likely a 4
Actually not bad! Sorta cool and listenable!
New to me. Not bad.
я ничего не запомнила и меня не тянуло включить)
When I think of New Order I always think of “Blue Monday,” but you wouldn’t think that album was from the same group. A disappointment.
Plus
3/9, 33%
I only know New Order for Blue Monday and Bizarre Love Triangle, neither of which are on here. This is an electro-pop album fuzed with post punk vibes. Some elements make me think of Depeche Mode, but less ominous. Largely had this on in the background. Only one that really stood out was Mr. Disco, but the others were fine too. I could see this fitting a certain mood, but it's not something that really clicks for me. Soft 3 / 5 for me.
interesting band. I've heard of them but never listened. It seems really well produced. Not really my vibe but it doesn't sound bad. It has a 90s electronic feel to me but the album came out in 89. Maybe they were ahead of their time. Overall didn't mind the listen. 3 stars
Was really digging this when I first put it on, but that faded pretty quickly. Just turned into some 80's sounding background music with a mediocre voice. Some of it was pretty interesting sounding though so I'll go a low 3.
Like this better than I expected.
Drum machines are cool, most of this album is alright as you can hear they're using drum machines. But then you get a bit worn out from hearing all the drum machine.
Classic 80s sound, some songs sound the same
Fine
i enjoyed some of the songs as they were catchy and/or groovy. but i did not feel that the album was cohesive in theme or sound.
Solid post punk album. Not as impactful as bands like the cure and the smiths. Few memorable songs on here. Still enjoyable all the way through. 3.16
Kinda surprised to see this one show up. 3 good songs (tracks 2-4). Nothing special.
Good album if your setting a mood at a party.
3/5 enjoyable but not much power and bland lyrics match the vocal delivery
Fine, not memorable
i just forgot to listen to this... i only listened to one song and it was whatever so um. yeah thats my review ig
Pretty ok.
Singles: Fine Time, Round and Round, Run 2 3.5
Need to listen again
Lyder meget som The Cure i nogen omgange?
Fin nok. Lidt acid elektronisk og slut 80er vokal. Lyder lidt corny.
Favorite song was "All The Way", maybe because it sounds like the Cure?
Better than I thought it would be.
Poppy!
kinda vibey but also not that remarkable (i did use it as study music to be fair tho)
Expanded my horizon, actually not too bad
Positiv overraskelse .
Overall, this struggled to hold my attention.
New Order just New Ordering, nothing new, just what the doctor ordered.
Kinda fun.
not really my vibe, but talented music
Holy 80s synth Batman! The lyrics “I’ll Stop the World to Melt With You” could’ve fit into more than half of these songs. Honestly, I’m surprised it’s not the same band. Jackass used the intro to “Vanishing Point” for their PARTY BOY stunt. Definitely could see our parents dancing to this on the club floor. 6/10
Lots of interesting electronic notes in these songs but none of them really are that good. I didn’t feel strong about the rhythm in each one. It felt very simplistic with average lyrics. Despite a variety of sounds I just couldn’t jam to many of these songs. It was like better than average hold music. However “Vanishing Point" was really good. That added a point. 6/10
Definition of 80s dance, still slaps.
I like New Order but didn’t know this album. I listened through once but unfortunately am not feeling well and my headache has prevented me listening a second time so not much of a review. I enjoyed it. Listens: 1 Rating: 3
I only know 2 New Order Songs (Blue Monday & Bizarre Love Triangle), neither of which were on this album. But this was still enjoyable to listen to. I will check out some of their earlier albums.
Always waiting for another True Faith but it never happened.
At this point they shedded off every aspect of Joy Division and started making happier more popy dance music. It's fine but it's really not anything unique or different.
This is a good New Order record, but not their best or most important. So it gets a good star rating, but why is it in this list? Also, compare the opening bass line of All the Way to The Cure’s Just Like Heaven which came out 2 years earlier…
I thought this was fine. I didn't really feel much one way or the other about it. Perfectly fine album.
Listened twice right in a row.Great sounds and grooves, but no hooks. Perfect length for an album. Don’t agree that this is “must-hear”
2.5
Lacks cohesion overall, but isn’t a terrible album… it just feels like it falls short of what it could’ve been. The melodies aren’t very catchy or memorable. The lyrics don’t stick with the listener either. Each track feels background - maybe this kind of music would make the perfect music for a movie or tv show.
Cool!
New order are new order. Could be any song from any album. Why have song titles when they are interchangeable
This is a fine listen. I see why fans are disappointed, as this electropop product is not as interesting as earlier works
Not their best album but I can’t see why it’s so disliked by many
Slightly experimental album where NO put a foot in the dance scene. Sounds a bit dated and it lacks some decent tunes.
first listen the production is cool, but try as i might, i just can't get into new wave
Decent but nothing is listen to repeatedly
Was ok, it didnt know what genre it was gonna be so it just was
Enjoyable. Sucker for Peter Hook's driving baselines but only knew the big songs from New Order. Liked this.
Liked it okay. 80s pop music influences are so everywhere that it felt a bit boring but that’s not this album’s fault. Was sometimes hard to make out the lyrics because of the vocal style, especially in the first song. Favourite song maybe Love Less?
I thought I was going to really like this because on paper, it's all genres I enjoy (new wave, electronic, dance). However, it was kind of bland. Nothing was memorable, it all kind of blurred together into one unremarkable blend of not-quite-danceable new wave pop.
Album 162 of 1001 New Order - Technique Rating : 3 / 5 Thought I was about to listen to what I read was a rock band but turned out to be mostly synth type dance music. There were a couple of poppy tracks. Didn't injure my ears.
When this came out I would have given it a 5. Now it gets a 3, more for my disappointment in the fact that I don’t still love it than a change in quality. It’s still NO doing what they do.
OK as background music, but I don't need to listen to it again. The one song I liked sounded just like one of their other hits.
Missing a bit of oomph
De plaatjes bleven met momenten precies over de verschillende nummers hangen.
Ik vond het geen dance, en ook geen rock. De ibiza-vibes die beschreven waren hoorde ik precies niet echt
not even blue monday. also orgy does blue monday better. ezzzzzzzzzzz dab dab dab fart song. guilty partner, vanishing point
3-
Estuvo bien, aunque no recuerdo nada memorable
Good record, please ant listen but never gets really good imo
It's a surprise that it's from the late '80s. I can hear the goth rock and the synthy pop stuffs, but the overall electronic groove of it is quite ahead of its time.
...is that a goat?
