Reviews (page 6 of 8)
there was a good energy, although it lacked any substance. Kinda remember me of the “punk” i grew up with in high school that was really pop.
Maybe I'll come back to this but it wasn't my favorite on first listen
This started as a 3, then dropped to a 2, and by the end teetered on 1. First, this sound isn’t working for me - screaming hard rock. Called “punk” but it’s far from the ‘70s CBGB art punk that I love, or even the exciting, early transgressions of MC5 or the Stooges. This is punk filtered through the arena rock sound that was so big in the ‘90s. One track even sounded like Springsteen and the E Street Band at one point. It has some riffs, yes, but the thing is bloated and ultimately, decomposing.
Not for me.
This was like Iggy Pop gone Ska. I don't know how I feel about it.
Just felt like one song was going the whole time and I’m not feeling it
A couple of good songs.
This was a fun album, enjoyed it!
Ska punk? Man, the 90s suck.

okay
En litt sterk 2’er. Liksom energisk rock uten fantasi og trøkk
Really samey, which is this particular genre I guess, but it doesn't really move the needle for me.
It's all right. Didn't love it, didn't completely hate it.
H: this was a breath of fresh air after dinosaurs jr. that being said, the album was still mid at best. nothing special for me 4/10 H fav song: Used Z: I really don’t have much to say to be honest, wasn’t for me. 3.5/10 Z fav song: none Z for fans of: adrenaline and loud noises
2.95 Guy sounds like costello
I almost decided to skip this album, but I'm glad that I stuck with it. I genuinely enjoyed the energy that some of these songs brought. The highlights of the album for me were the horn section and the background vocals. The lead vocalist, the vocal arrangements, and the musical style reminded me of Smash Mouth at some points, but smash mouth is a bit more memorable. Again, I'm confident to give this a two, but I don't think it deserves a three
Listened to the first 3 songs last night, and thought a 1, for sure; I'm a bit over half-way through now (the next morning), though, and it's not *quite* so obvious, since the songs have (setting the bar low) gotten a bit more tuneful, anyway. So, between a 1 and a 2. "Misbeaten" (track 11) even has a catchy riff or two. Rating this gets back to the question of what do the ratings mean: if it's compared to the other albums on here (and especially if you imagine a roughly even distribution of 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s), this one's a 1. But, since I think it's more of a universal rating of how good is this music, on a scale from 1 (worst) to 5 (best), I think this one might just barely be a very low 2. Maybe I'm just relieved that it wasn't too painful to listen to (setting the bar even lower, lol). Think that's what I'll do: the lowest of low 2s. That guy should not be a singer, though.
Nothing special Fave track: On a Rope
Cool artist name, cool album artwork. But the music leaves a bit to be desired. 2.5/5
Gave up after a while. Too American.
No thanks.
One hit wonder blandness
On a rope is fun. But one song is enough. Feels too fake and over produced and polished. No scuzz or roughness to it.
Scream Dracula Scream I remember On a Rope from back in the day, and it is still a great, fun song, but its really the only time they hit upon a bit of gold on here. It’s not a terrible album, and there are some little touches like the Beach Boys-esque twinkles at the end of Used, or the organ and backing vocals on Misbeaten, and the horns give them a slight point of difference. But unfortunately those horns oscillate between adding nice instrumental colour as on Young Livers and adding way too much ska, and the latter wins out far too frequently. He also really doesn’t have a great voice, and his thin, raspy unintelligibleness makes all the songs sound very similar. Apart from On a Rope there’s nothing compelling that would bring me back, so I’ll go for a 2. 🧛🧛 Playlist submission: On A Rope
Middling
Very mid. Very repetitive. Not sure why it's on this list. Very repetitive. There are far better examples from the 90's for this genre. Very repetitive.
Das Album wurde in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die aufgenommen — nicht ohne Grund.
I mean, good punk album, not my type
This doesn't sound like a band called "Rocket From The Crypt" and this doesn't sound like an album called "Scream, Dracula, Scream." The album artwork is off too. It's all very generic .
just screaming and scratching
You can just listen to On A Rope and you will get the same experience and effect as listening to the whole album. But if you listen to the entire album, you will feel as if you have wasted time.
This kinda punk is a little too hard, too close to heavy metal, for my tastes. Some songs on their own are OK, but this banal album mostly elicits a disinterested shrug. Oh, and I don’t care for the dude’s voice, either.
Mostly disappointed — nothing grabbed me except Born in ’69, the one moment that actually hit that gritty Nirvana‑punk vibe the rest of the album never found.
Kind of a chore
Didn't enjoy this, it's a half formed thought
I listened, and I'll say this.. it was an uphill struggle. Dracula didn't offend me, but he didn't quite capture my attention either. It's like watching a movie where nothing particularly terrible happens. There were moments that felt promising, but they never quite coalesced into something truly engaging. 90s punk, as a genre, generally elicits an "ugh" from me. I've never really been into punk, but I did hang out with some punks pretty regularly during this era. I don't remember them ever mentioning RftC, and I certainly don't remember seeing any of Rocket patches on the leather jackets they wore. And I can kinda see why. I'm 7 songs in. While this definitely fits 1995 with its sound, it's yet to do anything for me musically. Eh… And that reaction really isn't any better than the "ugh". And while I like the high energy, the arrangements don't interest me. C'mon. I had a mediocre ELO yesterday. I'm kinda missing that now.
Always feel I should like Rocket from the Crypt, from a surface listen it seems like it’s in my wheelhouse. But it never clicks, high energy but a little paint by numbers.
eh
посмеялась над come see come saw, но в целом не моё)
This just music. It’s not terrible. It’s just music though. It’s like rock ‘n’ roll or something. It’s got good energy though. Didn’t mind it.
wiso hend mir 90er punk i dere liste? aso die erste paar songs sind etz no easy. sie sind irgendwie afoch au rock n roll. sehr 90er glichzitig. wiener singt vorallem. ich gseh nöd so ganz was ich us dem album söll useneh. s isch guet gspielt mengmol no catchy und dases blöser het isch huere cool aber ich bhalt sehr wenig. 2.

need more raw energy on 'punk' project 4/10 Will I add this album to my library? no
Some band's have the same, Uniform, tone throughout an album. Sometimes is good to have such albums to pair with a particular mood. 2.75 / 5
meh
I remember having the CD years ago I never really got into them. It’s not bad but just didn’t stick. 2.5 star
Music was ok but I really didn’t like the vocals. There were a couple of tracks that sounded a bit early Costello but not enough to make me want to listen again.
Pretty boring. Just kind of became background music for me
Meh. I generally like punk (some, not all) this seemed uninspired.
Why this. So many more deserving recordings.
ehhhhhhhhhhhh atrocious vocals im ngl highlights (ish): on a rope, fat lip 1.5/5
This really is NOT the sound of my 1995 and for a punk band they sound insufficiently shambolic, well arranged and entirely melodic and harmonic. I get the sense that the band were better known for their idiosyncratic live performance which got the interest of the music press and TOTP ultimately. Well I've heard it before I die so that's something!
Not liked it so much
High energy garage rock, but ultimately a little generic. I feel it falls just short of three stars, which is a shame, as I hate giving it only two.
2.5

2,4/5
Just not very interesting. Don't know why it's here
This album is so one note from start to finish. Great energy, but ultimately kind of a chore to listen to. Next please.

This is ok, wasn’t traditionally bad but I have very little to say about it
some decent bits but overall couldn’t be arsed
Grand aye
generic 90s punk made for the radio which is fine but confusing why it gets a spot on this list!
Eh
Would have been fun in the nineties.
cool
Exactly how you would picture this San Diego band.
It was ok. Enjoyed some parts of it, but it was mostly pretty boring. Standout songs: Fat lip Salt future
Yes queen give us nothing. The most boring tropes of '90s punk rock all blended up in a performatively edgy project.
This felt like Mrs. Baird's Bread. It's fine bread and serves the purpose of hosting delicious meats, condiments, and veggies, but you quickly forget about the bread.
Generic rock from the 90s. Each track is fine but doesn’t add up to anything special. Sounds a bit uninspired - I don’t really know if I am missing anything or I’m just a snob but doesn’t do it for me. 4/10
Pretty much “on a rope” plus 13 others.
Lots of energy here but all seems to directed in the wrong places and could have benefitted more from a bit of variety in strumming and drum patterns. ‘On a rope’ is a bit of a meme but is the strongest song here, and the rest of it seem to just be derivatives of the same song and got tiresome by the end.
Kinda hated this. Strong 2
Retro-sounding punk in the 90's. Wasn't horrible, but didn't do much for me.
I like punk but this ain't it, for me at least. On A Rope is decent.
No sabría si ponerle 3 o 2...
meh
This album sounds like the type of music the cool older brother in an early 2000s movie would listen to, just to make sure the audience knows he's super duper cool. Why is this album on the list? I can think of a number of better inclusions. Unfortunately, this album was chosen, and I was subjected to forty-three minutes of listless, unimpressive, boring music. Something else to note are the lyrics, which are just straight nonsense to me. Two stars. (Favorite track: On a Rope.)
no reason for this album to be here. I did like it, but I have to rate it lower because there’s literally no justification for this mid punk cali band from the 90s to waste space on this list
I was really hoping for a good halloween song on this album :'(
( ; ͡° ʖ̯ ͡° )
Energetic and fun, but generic and forgettable.
This is largely just loud and cluttered rock. Not much inviting a repeat listen. Lyrics are unintelligible, drums are little more than smash, smash, crash. Sometimes smash, crash, smash, crash. Guitar and drums aren’t terribly original or interesting either. It’s not so bad that it’s annoying and needs to be shut off, but if you’re looking for something to actually listen to and enjoy, this isn’t it. Best suited for people who listened to it as hormone addled teens with unregulated aggression and less discerning taste who now enjoy it out of nostalgia.
A boring general ‘punk’ vibe poorly done. I catch some echos of bands like the Smithereens, early Foo and Elvis Costello, but poorly done. This is not good and I certainly feel one day closer to death after listening to this poorly done album. Poorly done.
Nothing special. If there's one thing punk music is usually good at, it is being an exciting, highly energetic listening experience. This one didn't achieve that.
Don’t rlly know why this album is on here? It’s got a lot of energy, but is pretty boring.
I don't see what this represents being on the list. There are way more interesting punky albums from the mid-90s. Didn't totally hate it or anything. Fav track: On a Rope Least fav: Come See Come Saw (Is this meant to be a play on "Comme ci, comme ça"? It annoyed me either way.
No.
Gonna give this two stars because, while it's a fine album, we're grading this on a curve of essential listening for one's entire life. And while I did not hate any moment of this, very little of it left me with anything I'll remember.
Goodness this really wore thin for me by the end. There are a handful of moments where things quiet down for a little that I thought had some impact but so much of this otherwise stays in 1 mode to its detriment. Really lost patience with the vocals in particular
Song(s) added to my 1001 Bangers playlist: On a Rope
This was fine - nothing I was terribly into, but nothing I hated
The only thing I can say about this is that I wasn't disappointed. And that's because I looked at the name and knew in advance I would hate it.
Pretty forgettable rock, some of it was fine, some of it was nearly Nickelback :(
Didn't hate it but it just sounds like every other cheap Punkrock album of that time and there's way better ones that could have been mentioned here.
OK.
Whenever an artist I've never heard of before shows up from the generator I get pretty excited. I've been very pleasantly surprised on quite a few occasions when this has happened. So that is how I approached today's album, even when I saw the generally low ratings. Unfortunately today this was not a positive experience for me. The album was fine. There were no songs I hated, but even the ones I kinda liked weren't exactly "good." Used and Misbeaten were just different enough to make them a bit more interesting than the other ones. Mostly what I found was that this was generic punk/hard rock and I have no clue how it's on the list.
Headbanging Metal rock
This is standard-issue 90s-style punk (or “punk,” really). Not terrible. But nowhere near special. What is this doing here?
I thought I didn’t know this band when it appeared on the list but then On A Rope came on and I did know it. Unfortunately though I just didn’t enjoy the album. Found his voice a bit annoying and each track was quite similar.
Okay, but why is this on here.
Rocket from the Crypt’s Scream, Dracula, Scream lands like a beer-soaked stage dive—loud, messy, and weirdly infectious if you’re in the right mood. The band leans hard into their signature clatter: jagged guitars, blaring horns, and those atonal barked vocals that sound less sung than spat. It’s not exactly subtle, but there’s a scrappy groove powering the chaos, keeping things from fully derailing. “On a Rope” nails a shout-along chorus that almost passes for pop, while “Drop Out” channels Mudhoney’s grunge snarl with a surprisingly buoyant bounce. “Come See, Come Saw” stands out for its slinky bassline, briefly grounding the racket. You may not hum these songs later, but in the moment, the record’s sweaty energy does its job—blunt-force rock that trades finesse for fun.
I appreciated the horn section in this otherwise standard-ass rock band, but was kinda bored. 2.5
Hmmmmmmm the vibes are cooler on this one than the music really was, in my opinion, it was Fine but it was also not particularly outstanding or weird or overall "wow don't die without hearing THAT one" material. 2.5
Garbage
I just listened to this 12 hours ago and could not tell you one single thing about it.
Not as bad as the other reviews made me think it might be. Green day but with interfering riffs. Not for me though, singing style is too shouty.
I own this album, and love it but does it dress spot on this list… no
It's just rock. Maybe punk rock? But it's not doing anything interesting. At least the songs are short.
These guys are throwing a few too many indie rock ideas at the wall in a justified effort to find some radio airplay. It’s perfectly down the line, inoffensive music, but considering this is the same dude that founded post-hardcore paragons Drive Like Jehu, there’s not enough teeth to make this rock. It’s bland radio rock, well executed, but very few songs stand out, and that includes their big hit which is pretty meh. Could do without this one on the list.
Kinda appreciate more given that this was his last album when he was alive. Although he doesn’t have the greatest voice he sounds good to me
Very average-ish 90s rock
Meh
14x hetzelfde nummer
not my thing ig
I just can’t connect to this
No thanks but appreciate this time capsule for what it is!
Metal screaming = no
Generic punk vibe
Don’t think I’ll listen to this again
Definitely not my thing at the start, which is unusual as I like pretty much every genre. I couldn't really get into it not matter how hard i tried. I did however really enjoy ‘Drop Out’ but that was let down again when i was reminded in ‘Used that the singer sounds like he needs to clear his throat and the chorus in ‘Ball Lightening”: ‘He can’t hold a dead pig It’s all fine while you’re cryin’ You want some cheese with your whine’ I like some differentiation in albums with this type of music and there isn't enough here for me. I doubt I will ever want to or will listen to this again. No thank you.
Started off bad, but didn't get worse.
OK I guess but not really a genre that does much for me. Doesn't feel like a 1001 album.
Wasn't in the mode for this I'm afraid
So I am not sure why this album is here. This is a group that is one step above garage band, local celebs but shouldn't really be on a list like this (think Local H for Chicago). They are fine, but nothing amazing. On a rope wasn't bad but it was similar to a lot of stuff out there. These guys likely hustled hard and just got in front of the right person on the right day.
Not much to say here. This album is really uninteresting. This style has been done a BILLION times. Absolutely wild that the Apple write up sort of compares it to In Utero by Nirvana and the musical spirit of Bruce Springsteen seeing as there are no similarities at all to either and there is nothing special about this album. Also, It’s almost as if this list is ultimately just some random persons personal faves and somehow their opinion has been blown up as being WAY more important than anyone else’s.
This wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard but I found it very uninteresting.
I'm not really a pink fan. I have it two cause at least it was short
In places this reminded me of the Rolling Stones from 30 years previous. In other places, maybe a touch of The Ramones, from 20 years previous. Unexciting rather than terrible
This was honestly pretty boring. It started out encouraging and I thought it would end up being some cool punk shit, but it actually got tamer and less interesting as it went.
When I saw "toured supported by Soundgarden" this all made sense to me. Not for me!!
4/10
Kinda got on my nerves a bit after a while, but nothing super offensive about it
Fattar ej
An incredible amount of screaming.
Solid bottom.
a lot of the stuff orbiting john reis and rftc is cool and i definitely respect him/them but that being said i do hate the vocal style here, and maybe it's just ex-ska kid PTSD but i truly hate this style of wind instrument playing: just kind of blaring and honking on that thing, very little artistry or variation in volume, tone etc. i love a band that can successfully incorporate any instruments besides guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, but i would not consider this a successful incorporation
We dig punk in this house. This was like... money punk? Slick punk? Maybe the production ruined it. It felt like people playing at punk.
Pretty mid album honestly, nothing of note jumped out to me while listening to this
Not for me.
I didn't hate it but more often than not this wouldn't appear on my vibe spectrum.
Kinda interesting: sounds a little like a parody, a little like a tribute (Elvis Costello: Used, Springsteen: Young Livers). But most songs are punk!
Nothing to get excited about here, just another below average album. 2 stars or D+.
Highlight: Fat Lip The side project of John Reis (Drive Like Jehu). I didn't mind it. Adequate punk rock. Think Fugazi with the occasional horns appearance. We already have Yank Crimes so I'd rather swap this for a blink-182 album. Overall: 4/10
Pretty unremarkable. I guess they're the same age as my parents from "Born in '69". Sorry olds.
Meh... energetic and fun - would be good live, but nothing I'd need to listen to again.
Great rock’n’roll band. A friend tells me they’re exciting in concert, which I can understand. But, it doesn't’t do much for me.
songs got longer as it went on :/ did not hate, did not like highlights: misbeaten young livers on a rope
I was loving this for about 15 minutes. First wave punk energy, screaming sax and some good tracks. It tailed off and as I got used to it the initial thrill abated. Really enjoying the albums which I've never heard of and have no context for (like this one), even if I'll probably never listen again!
Its an ok album. Not great songs are all the punk formula with strong chrouses and one that sounds like elvis costello. That was like the 4-5 song giving a break from the chorus songs that was cool to change it up. This was commercial punk pop at its pinnacle
Not a fan
One of those albums you buy at the time (which I did) off the back of one single (On a rope), and immediately regret. My views haven’t changed in the passing years. It starts off like a train and is really good for 3-4 songs, but the more it goes on the more I want it to end. His voice is dreadful and brass/punk grates pretty quickly; basically, it runs out of ideas and staying power. A bit like Arsenal’s season every year post-Xmas.
I feel like these punk albums are really all kinda the same, where like if you’ve heard one you’ve heard them all. But this one makes the fatal mistake of overstaying its welcome like way too much. It’s less songs than your average punk album and it’s still longer, and it’s not very fun or interesting unless you like punk. Which, as has been established, I don’t. I really think this could’ve stood to be like 10 minutes shorter, and maybe I would’ve liked it more. Favorites: Young Livers, Suit City, Burnt Alive
This album pretends to be a high-octane energy album but falls short. 2/5
Quite cheesy pink album
Bordering on offensive, but when I wasn’t contemplating how I would bash this album I caught myself enjoying a few moments. The rock whore in me. For that it gets two stars. Still feels like something that didn’t need to be made and parody of rock.
Im here for the ska punk vibe of San Diego in the 90s, but im a little lost on what makes this album so significant. The first three or four tracks are fun enough to return to
Not really sure why this is here. Is this a canonical punk/ska/post-grunge album? Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid
on the nose 90's punk/alt rock. it's pretty boring for the most part and was so of the time
I don't see what this is even doing on the list
Eh. I like RFTC, but I don't think this is justified as an essential listen. It's rock n roll throwback with a 90s production. On A Rope is a great song, but otherwise it left me a bit empty. A fun listen, but disposable. A high 2
2 - not great
I feel for like this era of 90s punk I either love it--NoFX, Blink 182--or hate it--this.
This album is fine but nothing really stood out to me. Meh.
Meh, felt kinda generic to me.
Too american rocky
Bleh 2.5/5
They just be making up bands at this point, what the heck am I listening to?
Drive Like Jehu and Rocket From the Crypt in the same week. They sound really similar, which makes sense. Didn't really enjoy it.
Energy plus! Enthusiasm. Some more enjoyable than others. Young Livers e.g. ok. Followed by Drop Out. Nah
Not bad, I always thought these guys were death metal.. apparently not!
Meh. Kinda just annoying.
A couple good running songs, a bunch of crummy ones. I didn't hate this album.
Not for me
This doesn’t make me want to stick pins in my eyes or drill a step bit into my temple, but I couldn’t wait for it to be over so I could get on with the rest of my day.
Wasn’t for me
Upbeat nice workout punk energy , on a rope and drop out stood oit
Noise rock? I found this one to be ok. Cool guitar sounds. Not much variation with the singing.
Generic 90s skate punk. Not bad but nothing to write home about. I feel like I've heard this sound multiple times before. No real edge but made me think of bands like "Good Charlotte" and "Millencollin", Sure these were a bit earlier but I feel there were other bands with this sound and catchier hits. Strong 2.
Not my scene
Apologies to rock fans but a lot of this just sounds the same to me.
Not really for me, as far as I could tell
It's fine, but including this album in the list over ...And Out Come The Wolves is criminal.
This album is not noteworthy to me. I listened to it but couldn't tell you anything about it, good or bad.
Punk/hardcore punk from the mid-1990s. I was expecting something a lot more faster, aggressive music but this was different and quite ok, even enjoyable at times. Still, it is not the kind of music I like to listen to. 2 stars, but it's close to 3.
a nice change of pace - i liked a handful of songs, but at times they just blurred into one another without much differentiation. run time was a little too long for my liking... got a little tiresome. but!! overall, these guys were fun. highlights - on a rope, used, misbeaten, come see, come saw
I'm sorry... but no... it's not my type of enjoyment, kudos to those who love it. I'm not one of you all. We can co-exist... I just want to be far from you.. that's all.
I think maybe Spiderbait or Frenzal Rhomb would have been a better choice.
Meh. They don't seem to have had a huge influence. His voice wasn't great (Billie Joe's is better) and their lyrics were simplistic and repetitive. Overall, kinda sucky and, unlike most punk albums, overstayed its welcome. Disappointing
On A Rope is an absolute clsssic. One I havnt heard in years. The vocals mean that often the songs remain similar, and they arnt really my style, but they do what they do well and with infectious energy…
This wasn’t bad generic punk-adjacent 90’s alterna-rock (and the horns admittedly elevate it somewhat), but I’m not really in the market for generic punk-adjacent 90’s alterna-rock.
Now this one does exactly what it says on the can. Doesn't mean that it's any good, but you know what you're getting from the title and the band name. There were a few bright spots, but nothing exceptional. Still worth a 2
Much better than I thought it would be. Vocals sounded a bit Bob Mould in places. The album also features my third favourite song about rope.
Not very good but I listened to the whole thing
I cannot fathom how this record stands out amongst a sea of derivative alternative groups in the 90s. I suppose what sets it apart is the atrocious mixing between the vocals and guitar. One of the most unoriginal and uninspired records I've heard in my lifetime
This might be more compelling if I hadn’t already listened to lots of music throughout the seventies and eighties by the time this came out. Derivative, though competent.
There were some fun songs on there but didn’t feel like anything different to a ton of other different punk bands Rating: 2.5
Some of these would hit in a 90's coming of age movie
Going into this, I had never heard of Rocket From The Crypt. On first listen, it quickly became clear that their brand of 90s American punk rock isn’t typically my style. Still, I gave Scream, Dracula, Scream! a fair shot. The album is sonically consistent, with high energy, aggressive guitar work, and a noisy, chaotic vibe throughout. While that might appeal to fans of the genre, I found the lyrics underwhelming and felt the album lacked standout moments or memorable hooks. Overall, it struck me as a very average effort. Favourite tracks: Come See, Come Saw, Born in 69 and Bali Lightning stood out slightly—they had some energy and groove that worked. Least favourite: As the album progressed, the songs began to blur together, becoming repetitive and hard to distinguish. Album artwork: Creepy, fitting the chaotic vibe of the music.
Good drumming. Never need to listen again
Probably never listen again.
Rock or something I don't know
First track was awful, I almost turned it off. It did get better, it was mostly listenable. It was also quite jarring in places, which I'm confident is intentional. I did make it all the way through, but without any real highlights and no desire to hear it again it's only 2 stars from me.
I don't know why but this just didn't resonate with me much. Something about the vocals, generic punk rock guitar and song structure, and ska brass all together didn't quite work. Fat Lip might have been the most interesting song to me. It was the only song that had me stop working and look over and see what song it was that was playing.
I really truly hated this record. It felt like a bad version of Less Than Jake. I wanted to like it more because of the horns and better than average guitar work, but by the end of bike ride I just wanted this shit off. It was really cheesy and I have no clue why its on this list.
A punk rock album with a 90's alt-rock edge. Or is it a 90's alt-rock album with a punk edge? Either way, it's just ok. High energy, but sounds very of its time. Not bad but not something I would pick this up casually. Key tracks: On a Rope Ball Lightning
Ummm… ok! Not my cup of tea.
pretty shite
I enjoyed Young Livers the most of these songs. Mostly a miss from me; the way the album was recorded makes it sound too distant, and I found myself thinking about how much I like the Ramones and Jay Reatard while listening.
This is nowhere near as good as it should be. The vocals are poor, and why did you mix this to hide the horn section?
so repetitive
Really not very memorable to me. Felt really generic. It was a fine listen but nothing that really captivated me.
Started out ok but I think I just got a little tired of it
pretty good. not a mood i would ever really go for
as a punk, we do not claim them
I think this project has just pointed out that I don’t really enjoy punk music. The first two tracks had me scared this was going to be miserable, but as the melodies came in I was having more fun. Once I got the vibe the 43 minutes flew by. They seem like fun young fellas, not something I’ll probably spin again.
If Jimmy Buffet made an ill-advised punk album, I think it would sound something like this.
Perus huutoalbumia...
Funket sikkert på vorspiel i '95, men veldig slitsomt i lengden.
Not really my thing.
Solid, listenable record. Sounds like it has more in common with garage rock tradition than other mid-90s indie bands.
I kept waiting for some of the songs to sound different from the other ones. It happened at the very end.
"high energy" "punk" "rock". just because you put the words together doesn’t mean it is. puts on the costume and thrashes around, tries to convince you. gnashes its teeth. is fast. has horns. says little. i found myself doing strange things while this was playing. put a monster energy sticker on my truck. stashed my sunglasses on the back of my head. grew a soul patch. sounds like san diego. like french fries in your perfectly good burrito. empty calories. there are impulses here that i appreciate more than on the albums i’ve rated as 1, but not by much. this is empty sound and impotent fury. if this is your thing, i’m sure these guys are coming to a desert or riverboat casino near you soon. keep stingin' em fellas.
Elvis Costello on steroids, here comes RFTC! Definitely respect this band, they always kept it high energy and blurred the punk/rock genre lines. But listening to this album just makes me want to listen to the cramps and Operation Ivy and social distortion and blue meanies and nirvana and even though they sound nothing like it NOFX. I’m not sure why it just doesn’t do it for me. Most of the elements are there octane, fun guitar parts, drummer salad, freakin’ horn section but something about the dude‘s vocals and just kind of how everything comes together this little lackluster for me not a terrible album just not for me. Song/band that song reminds me of Middle/ Op Ivy Born in 69/
meh
If I listen to this again in the right contacts, I might be able to find a song that I think is pretty okay, but overall I just was not feeling it
Not my thing
An album that benefits from not taking itself too seriously. Also the band has great chemistry, but this lost it's luster as it went on.
The producer: gee this is a really tight awesome band but the singer can't really sing. No worries, we'll stick the vocals low in the mix, compress the sound and no-one will know any different. Weirdly energetic and boringly unengaging at the same time.
Bit boring
Like a lite version of what it wanted to be. Despite the noise this somehow still managed to sound flat and lacking in any passion. Tough gig mind, coming the day after Never Mind The Bollocks.
What’s new? What’s different? Not that much to be honest. Feels a bit samey and not that exciting. Could/should be a 2.5.
I found it kind of boring. The singer doesn't really bring much to the proceedings. Not sure why it's on the list.
Not for me.
Mediocre, overproduced faux punk with unnecessary horns intruding on all of this. Didn't move the needle at all.
well, that was boring
Fine but not particularly crazy about horns with punk rock
really not my thing. that post punk era was a weird time, for sure
Ugh.
Nah. This genre is overrepresented. All tense energy and I didn't pick up on much musicality.
The songs were a bit repetitive...didn't really enjoy it.
Not for me. Some friends in high school liked this band and would play it around me now and again, but it never connected with me. I don’t know what it is. A significant chunk of the music I like is dudes with guitars, and this album is dudes with guitars, but I’m not buying what these dudes with these guitars are selling.
If this is on here then surely NOFX and Rancid will be, right? Right??
Nothing special - just loud noise
++: Ball Lightning, Fat Lip, Misbeaten +: Born in '69, Young Livers, Suit City +-: Middle, On a Rope, Drop Out, Heater Hands, Come See, Come Saw, Burnt Alive -: Used, Salt Future 5,0/10
Some highs and lows. Wouldn't call this a hardcore punk record though
Eh if I want this sound I'll listen to rancid
I don't hate it, but I'm really not feeling ANY of this album. Honestly, to me, it sounds a lot like bands in teen movies from the early 2000's that were supposed to be kinda bad. As in, good enough to not annoy the audience, but bad enough for everyone to understand that the lead singer thinking he's going to become the next rock god is clearly a joke. But I guess that had to come from somewhere.
Some other review had it right - it's weird how every song sounds like something that would stand out as kicking ass if it was played on the radio, but as a whole album, this just sounds very same-y. Very reminiscent of Monster Magnet. With slightly less testosterone and a bit more polish.
it was mid. some all right parts but not for me
..
Yep, that's pretty much a hardcore record.
The name turned me off but they were not nearly as hard as this would suggest. More Smash Mouthy and Ska
Hyvä levyn nimi, ja erittäin vuosituhannenvaihteelle tyypillisen näköinen kansi! Levy oli itseasiassa paljon tylsempi kun ajattelin. 2/5
Never heard of this group or album. There are songs on here that I could listen to again if I was in the right mood. Elements in some of these songs are interesting. The horns popping up in some of these songs are a nice and unexpected touch. I can kind of understand the appeal and why this would make the list. I don’t see myself putting this whole album on again though. 2/5
I wouldn't say that this is a bad album, but I don't think that it makes the list on its own merits. It seems more like a showcase of some punk-adjacent genres in which the list is otherwise light. It's got a bit of edge to it, and the album works when that edge cuts, but it isn't consistent. Which is a lot of words to say: it's fine, I guess.
didn’t catch me as a studio album, but i’d imagine it’s quite an experience to see live.
I did not use a private spotify session for this one. Straight forward rock, had issues with the singer's voice and nothing else really stood out to me.
It had potential, but it’s weak
Anemic punk flavored rock with touch of ska to sound "edgy". John Reis should have stuck with Drive Like Jehu.
Nothing special!
Weird stuff but has it’s moments, ok for a 2
Very little of this desperately-trying-to-get-commercial-attention "punk" rock did anything for me. I guess it was a breath of fresh air amid all the grunge an alternative rock in the mid 90s.
I dug the songs with horns. The rest was pretty forgettable
How did this get on the list
You don't hear much brass in punk music. Tracks like Young Livers and Drop Out incorporate it fairly well, though at the cost of the music sounding a bit staged. Non-spontaneous. Which sort of goes against the "point" of the genre. That being said, I actually enjoy it more than most punk on this list – at least on the scale of individual tracks. After 40 minutes of this nonsense, the high energy becomes pretty tiring to sit through, and you can find yourself counting the remaining minutes. In other words, the "album flow" isn't very good. I could see myself listening to individual tracks here as part of a mix, but not the album in its entirety, in the future. There's a lot of "drunken chorus" singing, which is pretty enjoyable if only to serve as a contrast with the bad lead vocalist. The guy sounds like an unreasonably low-effort Axl Rose. The lyrics of Ball Lightning are stupid. Normally I ignore the lyrics, but not when they're this egregious. Around this point in the album, I started paying more attention, allowing me to notice gems like these: "Well, come see, come saw, come cruelty / When it's hungry it's gonna fight, gonna fight, or gonna bite / And it chalks up one so hasty" "Want some cheese with your whine?" "I can't believe it's not butter, but it's sour / Learn blow by blow / What does fat lip know?" Yeah. Not exactly poets, these guys. 2/5 Key tracks: On A Rope, Young Livers, Misbeaten
I can't remember a single thing about this album, and I listened to it twice! I'd normally say that I'm grateful for the experience of listening to new music, but it's hard to when I never even had an experience to begin with.
J - 2 S - 2
Better than expected but much more boring than I thought. Punk after punk, that's just nothing. There may be a few good punk epigones, but the "Rockets" aren't one of them.
mid
Not bad, not great, but not bad.
2.5
Pretty generic punk from my untrained ear. 2.5/5
Another band I had heard of but never heard- I always assumed they were a late 90s alternative/industrial band that would have fit in on The Crow soundtrack. I didn’t dig this.
Not uninspired, vivid, to male.
…why is this generic pop-punk here
