Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Too slow for my tastes. Tried working out with it, instead blasted workout music and had a BLAST. Got me on a good track. Guess Tom helped.

weird album

Once you get over the general weirdness of this album you'll realize how boring it is regardless. 2 stars because of the part where the guy burns his car

Outro disco com clima mais invernal que deixa a sensação que era para ter mais uma pegada de rock.

What a weird album! Interesting to read the wiki and Spotify bio on Tom Waits and this album, sounds like he was really influenced by the Beat Poet stuff and just making weird music. This album definitely did that with some strange instruments, nonsensical or just gonzo lyrics, and his strange gravely voice. I get the purpose and place of crazy, unconventional, or experimental music but it’s just hard to enjoy or listen to sometimes. This wasn’t totally offensive or unlistenable, so I’ll give it two stars.

2.4/5, ogillar hans röst ibland

Couldn’t get into this one.

dites moi que cest le dernier tom waits par pitié

Do people willingly seek out Tom Waits’ albums? I don’t get it. Can someone explain? Help a brother out. I couldn’t wait for this to finish.

C- Underground 3 Shore Leave 2 Dave The Butcher 1 Johnsburg, Illinois 3 16 Shells From A 30.6 2 Town With No Cheer 2 In The Neighborhood 2 Just Another Sucker On The Vine 3 Frank's Wild Years 1 Swordfishtrombones 2 Down, Down, Down 2 Soldier's Things 3 Gin Soaked Boy 2 Trouble's Braids* 2 Rainbirds 3 This actually wasn't horrible. I expected MUCH worse from Tom Waits, but some of this was really interesting.

i think i dont really get along with tom... there was maximum 2 songs that i kinda like would listen to

Fake Charles Bukowski put to sounds masquerading as music.

Why did I do this to myself? I waited until our last Tom Waits album to go back and fill in my missing reviews for three other Waits albums. But I can’t take one full album of Waits, let alone four in a day! Why did I wait!? Album opener “Underground” feels like it reveals how Waits might have inspired Modest Mouse, who sped up that sound a bit and paired it with a slightly more palatable vocal. Then we get a lot of spoken word, macabre, carnivalesque weirdness. The Waits are all gonna be 2s for me, but I can differentiate even then - I like “Swordfishtrombones” less than “Rain Dogs” (which started today’s dark adventure).

Underground had a dark circus vibe that I kinda like. Ultimately, like other TW albums, this album is sunk by the voice that only partially works in a narrow set of circumstances (like on 16 Shells, a highlight of this album for me).

As an album this is difficult to get through. But I will say that Tom Waits has a niche. It is thin and particular, like the trajectory of spacecraft required to reenter earth’s atmosphere successfully. Not too steep an angle. Not too shallow. The available aperture is the thickness of a sheet of paper compared to a basketball. In those rare times a track is within that paper’s thickness, Tom sounds halfway decent, if still coming off as a corpse entertaining at a zombie piano bar. 16 Shells From A 30.6 falls into this category. Similar for Frank’s Wild Years which sounds like it’s straight off the five star Nighthawks At The Diner album.

Not one of my favorite Tom waifs albums. There were a couple of songs that I enjoyed but overall the album fell short.

Still better than Captain Beefheart. Maybe if I drink a full bottle of whisky I will like it...

Although, some songs are quite interesting and fun musically, I don't enjoy listening to Tom Waits voice. Also, at least half of the songs on this album suck.

Becomes too much of a concept with too little palletable music

This isn't the worst Tom Waits album I’ve heard, but that is very faint praise. If the Muppets got really into Charles Bukowski and recorded an album, it would sound like this. Pretty tiresome. Even the album’s best song (16 Shells…) wears out its welcome well before it’s over. I don’t know who this is for, but it definitely isn’t me.

Irritante stem, e nummers doen me niets.

Different album but not my thing

can appreciate the experimental aspects but the vocals on some songs were just genuinely annoying, songs also just didn't keep my interest if they weren't annoying

Highlights: "A Soldier's Things," "Johnsburg, Illinois," "Swordfishtrombone," "Rainbirds" Not Waits' best pound for pound, but full of diverse little vignettes that get at one of his big strengths of theatrical moodsetting. The dramatic keel of "Trouble's Braids" into "Rainbirds" is stirring, "Johnsburg, Illinois" showcases how he can use ugliness intentionally for characterization, with that drunken rubato on piano following sour notes in the vocals, and "Soldier's Things" marries lyrical form and content perfectly -- as good of a song as he ever wrote.

Sounds like Tom Waits. 4/10

too strange for me

Another eccentric Tom Waits album. It is similar to his other albums. It is not as long as his other albums so for that reason I will round up. No need to revisit.

Haha very funny, algorithm, giving me two Tom Waits albums in a row. Sigh. I just came off the first one thinking maybe I don’t dislike Tom Waits as much as I thought I did. My burgeoning neutrality was worn very thin with even more Tom Waits. I dunno…I don’t think I hate it but I don’t really like it.

A little too gravelly, and perhaps because I knew about him before I knew his music, it seemed a little cliched. It was ok, but won’t be seeking more education.

Tom Waits again. Such a weird album. I don't hate it. I don't like it either.

What kind of gravel is he chewing on for this one? Class A? Clear?

strange, intense and admittedly even cool at times, but not exactly my cup of whiskey. 2/5

The fifth album so far on this list by Tom Waits... not a single one has been even close to a must listen.

Strange

Just a little too dreary for my taste.

Might come back to this in a few years with a more mature ear because I think I’m missing something with this. Just wasn’t for me atm.

Dette var rart, nesten umusikalsk. Hvertfall manglende rytme til tider. Funker ikke helt for meg

Gave it a second listen and enjoyed it more but still no more than a high 2 star.

Couple of decent tunes on here

eh, fint nok

Like watching a child throw spaghetti at a refrigerator.

tom waits invents a unique soundscape and becomes himself in this album - however his magnetising persona does not save this album from its basic lacking in tunes nor does the amusing ditty about obliterating a chihuahua 'shore leave' does sound like banjo-kazooie music though

Can’t say I loved it.

Becoming pretty convinced that Tom Waits just is not for me. Favorite track: Gin Soaked Boy

A significant improvement on the 2 other Tom Waits albums I've had to suffer through so far on this project. 2*

I get that this is notable for being a big shift from the artist's previous work but it didn't make for a good listening experience and I don't think it has a place on the list.

какой-то он совсем не мой

Another Tom Waits album? Seriously? I simply don't like his voice. It's so grating. Still not as bad as the first album but this was a struggle to listen to. Still sucks though. 1.5/5

Didn't hate this, but didn't really like it.

Very Tom Waits, he's got better albums

Yo, wtf? All this time I thought Tom Waits was well-respected for his serious, somewhat brooding folk rock songs. Turns out he makes carnival music that sometimes sounds like it's being sung by Louis Armstrong? It's confusing and impressive at the same time. I don't think I can ever listen to this record again but man, mad respect for the audacity that this man displayed here.

I like Tom Waits and even I think 3 albums on this list is too many for him. I'd for sure pick the other two over this one.

Not bad

I just can't with tom waits. Not terrible, but i just can't.

I approached this with caution. Having previously been subjected, via this list, to Bone Machine, I fully expected this to be similarly atrocious. In fact, the first couple of tracks are quite nice, bluesy stuff. Then comes track 3 - Dave The Butcher - which is the exact kind of a cacophonic bullshit that I was fearing. It sounds like a college kid has been given the brief to make something that sounded like a haunted circus. Johnsburgh, Illinois starts off with a beautiful, perfectly recorded and produced piano solo. And then he starts singing in that broken voice. Nah. Next track track - 16 shells - is actually quite engaging, in an Americana sort of way. But I think he needs to see a voice coach. That sound cannot be good for his larynx. Town with no cheer. Bagpipes? Srsly? I get the very real feeling now that Tom Waits is deliberately trying to be antisocial. Especially when it leads straight into be being played on a Stylophone. Then we coast along in a bit of bluesy Americana until Gin Soaked Boy, which is great. And we round off the album with an abrupt nothing. Difficult to rate this, because while the bad stuff is bad, the good stuff is great. If I didn't think he was trolling, it would probably get a 4. But I do think he's trolling, so I will bestow a punitive 2.

I wanted to really like this. I find it very disjointed and was a difficult listen. Neighbourhood raised the stakes.

Not my cup of tea unfortunately

Not my taste

not for me

Niets speciaals

plodding and grumbly. Sad carnival music maybe? It's like if that HBO show, Carnivale, had a musical talent they would cut away to between scenes, it would be this. OK, that's not totally fair, there are some upbeat songs like "Down down down" but otherwise I guess you really have to pay attention to the lyrics for this to resonate?

Still don't get it.

Al estilo de Tom Waits, no sé si eso es bueno o malo, pero a mi no me atrapó

I was excited for this one, thought I remembered it and enjoyed it. It's not terrible but I was definitely misremembering

Yeesh what a comedown after American Idiot yesterday

An acquired taste, and I don't really have the appetite.

Rock experimental. Aburrido.

12/09/2021 Today's Album: "Swordfishtrombones" by Tom Waits - This album I initially was going to write off, but now that I'm on track 4 I think I might give it a chance. The first 3 songs were like these creepy weary instrumentals with this weak out of tune vocal that sort of works in it's own way. Very weird but definitely listenable. Johnsburg, Illinois is a great track to take things back a bit and have a nice short little break between the gritty blues. 16 Shells is a sort of boring track that just trudges along. It's straightforward and that's kind of all it is. Town With No Cheer starts off really cool with these bagpipes, before returning to this kind of slow organ ballad with those same growly vocals. I don't really think I am a fan of the vocals, but they work with the tone of music I guess. This song is really sad, but never really picks up or does anything for 4 and a half minutes. Listening to the next few songs just secures in my mind that these are just a bunch of slightly melancholic or creepy ball tunes backing really boring and depressing vocals that sound like if Axl Rose never tried. Gin Soaked Boy pickes things up instrumentally but the vocals are straight up unlistenable and the next 2 songs just aren't worth even listening to. This album is incredibly mediocre. It seems like it would have been insane when it came out in 83 and Im sure theres a huge cult following to this album, but I really don't see it and I think the vocals are physcially grating Score: 4/10 poorly done Highlights: Johnsburg, Illinois,

Tooo abstract for me

May have to have a second listen. Potentially too minimalistic but better than regular Tom Waits

2/5 nope

Just don’t get the appeal.

Yeah, so I kinda get what Tom Waits was going for here. Just doesn't work for me. A couple of the tracks are ok, like "Town With No Cheer." It does remind me a lot of Captain Beefheart, though I do not know if that's a good thing.

Some good songs, he's as interesting as ever

Music good Tom waits bad

Mostly not my taste, although I do get the bluesy style.

Muutama ihan kuunneltava biisi, mutta yleisarvosana kehno.

Ei nyt mitenkään ihmeellinen, mut kyllä mielellään kuunteli

1/15 songs = Not bad 2/15 songs = Bad 12/15 songs = Horrible

Solid 2. Appreciate its music and its experimental but not much doing for me. Reminds me of black books score music or music you would get in a bar with a silent film on in the background or a film with the sound off. Frank's wild years could be a joker speech odd little song.

Tom Waits never did a lot for me and I struggle to see the broader appeal being totally honest. I’m struggling to warm to anything in this album and his style is bizarre. Feels like I’m in a fever dream at times. Some nice melodies and piano parts but that’s about it.

Well it's definitely different... Sounds like someone recorded an avante-garde hippie spoken word poem/drum circle jam session in large parts. Then other parts sound like 'railroad' songs with a more gravelly feel, which are better but just OK really.

No. The sounds are annoying.

veeeeery weird.

Really not much else to say I haven't already...

Thought I would be cool listening to Tom Waites. But I could barely get through. It deserves 1 star but I finished it so 2 stars.

I liked this better than bone machine, but tom waits just doesn't really do it for me. His voice is a bit of a turn off personally, but I did like the blues and jazz incorporated throughout. Favorite song: Johnsburg, Illinois

Tom Waits' voice and style are certainly interesting, but also very grating. It quickly gets tedious, I don't know how people can listen to this for so long. I guess they must focus on the lyrics more than I can.

Never got into Waits' brand of music.

Was this list made by Tom waits himself? Better than the last one but still a struggle

Production: 12/20 Songwriting: 8/20 Innovation: 11/20 Bangers: 0/20 Emotional response: 6/20 =37 Ooh not bowelled over by this one sorry Tom.

It was a bit too experimental and beyond my level of appreciation.

Tom Waits is poised to be the next artist we get way too many albums from in a short period of time. After the last, I'm obviously not looking forward to this. As expected, it's goofy as hell. The opening track is so bizarre that I kinda like it. Overall, I'd put this slightly over the previous Tom Waits album for being more interesting in instrumental choices (it all felt thematic), but it's still not something I dig very much. Some skippers to be sure, that drags it down. But I do think Tom's got potential to make an album I actually enjoy, so I'm less afraid now for the next. Favorite tracks: Underground, Frank's Wild Years. Album art: I actually like this one, the color scheme is pretty cool, and it feels like it has genuine artistic direction matching the music. Font is cool too. Wish the album were a little better though. 2.5/5

Buen músico, no tan buena musica. tiene sus momentos.

Just not really for me. I see the musicality. But I did not enjoy this.

Qué a mi no me guste no quiere decir que no reconozca que está chido.

This is realy my kind of music.

Too long, didn't get it.

Not really for me, might give it a couple more listens to see if it grows on me but I'm not rushing back to it.

A narrated big band sound with a dark aura.

Meh. Boring.

Project was weird, not in a good way. Didn't like most of it, don't want to hear it again. Favorite song rainbirds, liked how soft it was. 3/8.

"Stylistically different from his previous albums, Swordfishtrombones moves away from conventional piano-based songwriting towards unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract and experimental rock approach", aldus de wiki. En dat klopt, na 3 nummers zetten we de boel af en we drukken morgen op het knopje van 1 ster. Houdoe!

Indescribably bad

This is like catching the bus through New Orleans as a tourist. The streets seem alive with soul. But there is a homeless dude sitting in the back of the bus rambling nonsense to himself about how lotto was invented to lure out time travellers, and that Finland was a lie, made up by the Soviet Union. The man appears to have soiled himself.

"Robots" soundtrack jumpscare got me right out the gate. about as good as that movie

This was pretty grating. This style of singing is horrible. I am dreading the other four Tom Waits albums on here. Favorite Track: Down, Down, Down

Tom Waits, 4eme album et avant dernier à subir =>1/5 Voix toujours aussi insupportable.

This list does not need five albums by Tom Fucking Waits

No para mí

Brutal.

Why is this good? The lyrics? Tom Waits really isn't my cup of tea.

Is this technically even music

What the banana sandwiches!? It’s like someone sharted into a mic!

Shit music with stupid lyrics must mean it's deep and artistic, right?

What a load of rubbish.

Can't stand Tom Waits.

Just not my thing

Just find Tom Waits intolerable

Second Tom Waits album (after Heartattack And Vine). Still not a fan. 16 Shells From A 30.6 and Frank's Wild Years were interesting. Other than that, not much here for me. Best song: 16 Shells From A 30.6

Dr. Teeth ass voice

couldn't finish it. also, dog murder. f--- this album

absolutely not, i'm not artsy woke enough for this album i fear

L: 1 M: 4 F: 0 O: 1

I swear to God there's a Five Nights at Freddy's song or a Bendy and the Ink Machine one that sounds EXACTLY like that first song. I felt like I was getting war flashbacks when hearing it. Imagine MY DISAPPOINTMENT upon listening to the rest of the album and not A SINGLE song sounding like a FNAF one after that first piece. I'm really not a fan of this album and this guy. I'm not sure what his other stuff sounds like, but I'm not curious in the slightest. I think that's enough for today. Two of the songs can't play on Spotify in my region, and I think I should be thankful to anything or anyone responsible for that. Damn, this was bad. PLEASE GOD NEVER LET THIS EXPERIENCE REPEAT AGAIN. My family has some hearing problems; in times like this, I hope I inherited those so I could never listen to this again. On the other hand, dementia is also heavily prevalent in my family. I so hope I won't get that one because maybe I'll forget how bad this shit was and I'd listen to it again.

no lol

Ugh. From the Spotify artist description, you'd think this would be exactly what I like. Honestly did not enjoy at all. 2/10

I just don’t get Tom - I don’t love the odd instrumentation or the “weirdness” for the sake of being weird. I’d rather hear a straight ahead cover of one of his songs by another artist. It always sounds better.

I’m sorry but the voice just doesn’t do anything for me and the style of singing made me laugh out load at the opening song. Didn’t like any song on this and I won’t be back

Tom Waits - You may love him or not I'm from the second group

Annoying vocalist and an incoherent track listing. The nearest thing that I have got in common with this album is that I once played trombone. But never played a swordfish. 1/5 24/3/26

I do get it, but that doesn't me I like it.

what the hell is this. A circus with a guy taking a big dump Might be the worst thing I’ve heard on here so far. Just look at that stupid cover. You know it’s gonna be bad, but this bad

Crap. Weird and crap.

Wow, that was terrible. I didn't enjoy any of it.

what the fuck was that?

Holy snooze fest. Only like 3 good songs and 2 of them are good cause my smoker isn’t chirping.

Great, another Tom Waits album.

Who keeps allowing Tom Waits to make albums and who keeps allowing him on this list

Everyday I question the people who made this lists choice. Would give it 0 stars if I could

LOL. Sick of being gaslit about Tom Waits. His music sucks. Terrible voice corny goofy music.

No thank you

2/10 You have to get used to it, intriguing and an oddball album that sounds bleak at times and homeless at others. The bare percussion and ticklely guitar create an interesting listen, but I don't get the hype, esp with all the talking involved. Highlights: Down Down Down, Rainbirds, In the Neighborhood

It's just a lot and absolutely nothing all at once.

Every song is just sitting around waiting for him to shut the fuck up

Tom Waits. 1*

a very difficult listen, to begin with. going into this album i knew it's gonna be challenging however i didn't expect that to this extent. the first track "underground" was truly atrocious, it felt like my ears could start bleeding at any minute. the only positive thing i have to say is that the tracks began to be better and better from 1-15 (this way "my fav" - if i can call anything that way - was "rainbirds"). i see how creative these songs are and i do believe that some could call tom waits a visionary of some sort - i don't think i've heard songs that experimental in my life - but as a casual listener who does not wish to look into a deeper meaning of the singer's voice (to me,horrible), it's an experience i do not wish to repeat. i'm glad that this challenge, subjects me to such new genres of music though, because i would never digest it myself nor finish listening to the album, so i guess you can say that my horizons are broadening with every listen and i am curious how this journey will go!

Once again, Tom Waits remains committed to the bit. The gravelly-voiced-barfly-poet schtick gets old real fast. Wouldn't it be funny if the real-life Tom Waits was actually a very posh, upright gentleman with a butter-smooth voice who drives a sports car to the country club, where he plays tennis and berates the servers for bringing him the wrong vintage of Bordeaux?

Some of the arrangements are really good. And then the singing starts…

i hate folk

not my thing

Not for me 1/5

Hated this so much

No. I do not like Tom Waits.

Definitely not my style.

Dont like his voice. Cool beats.

I don’t know what this is

At the risk of sounding judgmental, if you claim to like tom waits I think you are probably engaging in various other forms of self-delusion and you should really either take a long hard look at your life or more preferably kill yourself.

Absolutely not.

More like sad trombones.. *womp* *womp* *wooooomp*

Genuinely gross to listen to, awful beyond comprehension

Like Brecht without the intelligence or charm.

Bit stressful

I'm calling P.E.T.A.!

Can't stand his voice

This was irritating. It’s giving republican

If I could give this negative stars I would

Gotta say I've actually never listened to this guy before. I have to say, not only is this the worst album I've heard so far from this list, it's also some of the worst music I've ever heard. What a massive piece of shit. Had to look up some of his bigger hits and they're nowhere near as bad, so what's going on here? I don't even want to know.

Tom Waits isn't for me. When this album came up I felt dread at the thought of having to listen to a second album from him in this 1001 album thing. I gave it a go, and it's like April Ludgate wrote it. It's like a crypt keeper listened to mice run across the piano and had an idea. It's like an edge lord grew up to 45 and never changed his mindset but suddenly believed he could play several instruments. Reader, I'll be honest, I'm not sure I'll listen to another Tom Waits album. If my happiness is truly in my control, I'll choose to remain happy instead of listen to more of this.

I can say, with little deliberation and much confidence, that this is the worst album I have got on this list yet (yes, somehow worse than Kid Rock) and one of the worst albums I've ever listened to.

I just cannot get into the carnival barker thing, and that's most of this. DNF.

Je ne comprends la place de cet album ici. Voix rocailleuse et sombre, son dissonant, j'ai l'impression d'être dans le corridor de la mort suivis par des ombres froides menaçante.

This has to be satire, right? an eclectic version of try hard if not.

Meh, art-asshole music

An acquired vocal for sure!

I'll dare to say it, "The emperor has no clothes!" I wasn't able to sit through this.

The success of artists like Tom Waits is proof to me that the patriarchy is alive and well.

Didn't love. Sounded like some guy putting on a bad one-man-show with a dash of fever dream. I will not be searching more out from him

Constipated man growls while someone bangs on a pot in the background. 1.

Borderline unlistenable but not outright offensive to the ears either.

Don’t think he’s my thing

If the muppets created a horror flick this would be the soundtrack.

this could not be less my thing. didn’t enjoy a second

I don’t know who I pissed off to have Tom Waits so soon after Captain Beefheart and Bob Dylan, but I’m sorry.

I just don’t know who Tom Waits’ audience is, still waiting on an album that demonstrates his appeal.

I try not to give up on albums but this one is basically unlistenable. Update: I did infact make it through, and hated every second!

* Really don't like this guy - goes into the garbage bin

Åpner sterkt med Kiddy Kong: the musical

Why? Why?

Weird album; hard to get through. I think since it's apparently part of a trilogy album set, the other two would make it make more sense? 1.5 Tom Waits has much better music.

Didn't really like it.

No thank you.

Tom Waits is what you would get if there was a being who needed to ingest good music to live. After passing through this beings GI tract and extracting all that was great from that music, Tom Waits would be the crap clinging to the boil just south of this being's anus. it's awful

If “fucked up circus music” was a genre, this album would be it. Overall very unpleasant. I’ve heard other Tom Waits stuff is better, but I’m not holding my breath after this. My 500th album and first Tom Waits so far, and I’ll pass.

That voice is nightmare material.

Like a drunk burn victim busking under a bridge. No likey.

Insuportável

This is now the FIFTH Tom Waits album I've had the misfortunate of listening to. Unbelievable one is on here, let alot FIVE. Just dogshit. The music they give to terrorists in Guantanamo to torture them. 0/10.

Track one is from the movie Robots. Listen to one song, it's a vibe. two songs, it's a tragedy.

Tom Waits is an acquired taste. Pray you never acquire it.

Oh god, another Tom Waits album. I hate this guy so much, what a chore.

His voice done my head in.

I admire Tom Waits for his bravery, but this was trash

Remember… I’m not saying this isn’t a great, influential record, because all 1,001 of these records are… just really wasn’t my style

No, I won't listen to another Tom Waits album. Does the guy who made this list really believe every album Tom Waits ever put out is so superior to other albums or did he just need to fill 1001 of them and this is the person he chose as filler.

Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits is a big ol’ negative for me. I thought I might be able to get something out of a couple of songs. And I did almost come close a few times. Mainly, I’m just annoyed I wasted part of my night listening to this and I cannot get that time back. This is a 1 rating. 1/5

Within 15 seconds I knew this would be impossible. After a couple dings, I didn’t think it could worse until bagpipes were added. Holy mother of god I would rather eat liver than ever listen to this ever ever ever again. CLEARE YOUR THROAT TOM

This was so bad I had to stop halfway through. I don't even know where to begin with this. Its just the opposite of what I would want to listen to at any point.

Escuché salteado y no voy a darle ni una chance. Sé que no me va agustar ni un poco

There are enough people who like Tom Waits to make me feel okay with how much I don’t like Tom Waits. Please tell me this is 2/2 on the list. (It’s not, is it?)

I just don’t get this guy or what he’s doing.

санудтрек к фильму "Уродцы"

Not for me

Oh dear, I've heard of this and possibly have listened to it, as I had a mate who liked him a lot. He left such a lasting impression. It's not very good.

Ich weiss nicht was an dieser Platte gut sein soll.

I thought I would like it but no. 1

My God did I hate this album. This might be the worst one yet. Awful, terrible,

Virtually unlistenable in my mind.

Ever seen It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Remember that scene where Sylvester is at home and dancing in some sort of drug trance and doesn't hear the phone? That's what this sounds like. Weird, not good, 70s shit that is trying to be experimental, but just overly horny, over the top, and cringy.

Schrecklich!

Meh. Never like this album tbh.

Tom can Waits for a good review from me after this one.

Wish I liked Tom Waits but I don't.. couldn't listen past the 3rd song

Perhaps this is beautiful poetry but I don’t find it to be beautiful music. Maybe that says more about me than it does about Waits but I’m here for the music and if the poetry is there as well, all the better. Not so much the other way around.

Line drawn

just bad

Among the worst albums so far

This was largely unpleasant unfortunately. I’ve never listened to Tom Waits and had heard good things but I was underwhelmed

a collection sounds for contrarians.

I’m sorry, Tom. I love “Come On Up to the House” but this album was not for me.

Have never liked this artist or understood the appeal. Horrible voice, lame songs. Hope to never hear him again, but unfortunately he has 4 more albums in the 1,001. No more from G. Love and Special Sauce, however…

It’s just noise to me. Like circus music. And, as I’ve said before, I hate his voice. There might have been one decent song, but just one.

Clown music.

didnt not like this

I so much did not like this

A sonic terrorist attack, makes me feel bad for ranking some of the other albums so low. Singer sounded like he had borrowed Sean Dyche’s vocal cords and then smoked 1000 cigarettes with 15 pints of gravel for good measure. Listened on the way to work, think I’d have enjoyed lighting a box of fireworks on the passenger seat more, although it would have been tough to hear the difference. I just don’t know what it was or what it was meant to be.

Ok I'm sorry. I'm sorry to every halfway decent musician I called bad. I'm sorry for saying the Beatles should have been chased out of England. I'm sorry for saying Suzanne Vega made me want to throw up. I'm sorry for saying Kendrick Lamar sounded like disorganized trash. To everyone else I'm not including, I am so sorry I didn't recognize the small bit of talent you have. Tom Waits has made me realize that there are some musicians without talent, and you're not one of them. My apologies once again.

Nope. 1

NON CRISSE PAS ENCORE L’IVROGNE! Deux jours d’affilées, le générateur veut vraiment me tuer! J’aurais dût donner deux étoiles à son album d’hier, je vais donc me rattraper aujourd’hui.

Yeah… Well, there’s 41 minutes of my life I will never get back. Not sure who the audience for this guy would be. I’ve certainly heard of Tom Waits, but never actually heard him before. Not sure I need to hear him again.

Wouldn’t know what the second half of that album sounds like, didn’t get that far.

I'm sick of these shit "Artistic" albums, mate stop whingeing and play some normal music not this circus jingle dogshit played in-between this bloke banging on.

my spotify algorithm turned into shit after this

What a joke of an album

1. underground - 0 2. zhore - 1 3. ilinoiz - 0 4. zhellz - 1 5. touun - 1 6. neighborhood - 1 7. zucker - 1.5 8. uuild - 1 9. zuuord - 1 10. douun - 1 11. zoldierz - 1 12. gin - 1.5 13. rain birdz - 1.5

Hated this. His voice, the music, the lyrics, the whole enchilada

To me this album sounded so bad. How can you put this out saying oh yeah this will be decent.

Not for me

There's so much Tom Waits on this list. about the same as all the others.

I had a feeling me and Tom wouldn't get on.

Now listen, I love my fair share of unlistenable shit. Throbbing Gristle? Make it throb harder. Einstürzende Neubauten? All day everyday. But there is nothing about Tom Waits that makes me understand the appeal. Bullshit, self-righteous garbage for alt kids to pretend to like in order to fit in. I tried to be more fair the first few times I got his stuff, but now hating Tom Waits has become part of my personality.

Wtf is this

When I was a teen and had more patience for musical theatre I thought Tom Waits was interesting. I had heard of Swordfishtrombones multiple places as THE weirdo breakthrough album. When I first heard Captain Beefheart, I saw this for what it is, a sad and cynical marketing exercise. Dude saw something and was like "I could make that more mainstream", switched from piano balladeering, and has rode the same wave for 40 years. I suppose that's the history of popular music in a way. Beefheart is a white fella doing the blues. This one feels particularly egregious. I suppose it's also a matter of taste to say this adds nothing that you can't hear on a Beefheart album. It isn't exactly the same. Tom Waits adds more carnival barking & maudlin sentiments. Even if there was originality here it would wear out its welcome. I was going to go 2 stars, but thinking about it there isn't a single song on this I want to hear. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

# 277 : I really don’t like Tom Waits’ music and this album hasn’t changed my opinion. This album may be deep, but it is unlistenable. Have the people that rate something 5 stars actually listened/read/watched what they are rating?

Odd. Doesn't spark any joy.

Idk what’s going on, idk want to find out

Is this the Tom Waits I can stand? No it is not

I'm rating this a 1 only because I'm not allowed to give less. What is this absolutely trash of an album? This sounds like something you should avoid your entire life

I mean I made it all the way through but I can’t say I enjoyed it

somebody please kill me before the next Tom waits album comes up (this is definitely better than the other two I've had to listen to so far but i still hate it)

I ate a bowl of nails for breakfast <calm> without any milk <panic>

Cringe

Blows goats

What a weird this guy is. No thanks.

Did not listen

Very few voices just plain annoy me. This is one of them. And it seems contrived, as if trying to assimilate blackness. I can't bear it.

What a terrible day to have ears

It felt like this album was trying to do a lot but accomplished very little. At times it was hard to hear what was going and he didn't enunciate anything. I liked Gin Soaked Boy but that was the only song that I liked. Maybe I just didn't get the album but it felt like the kind of album I would like in theory.

Please stop giving me Tom Waits albums.

If I wanted to listen to gibberish spoken into a microphone, this is the perfect album.

what the fuck was bro yapping about for real

Not just not for me.

What on earth did I just listen to?

SpongeBob ass opening track. My god. Actively pissed me off to listen to this. I do NOT like his voice.

I hate Tom Waits.

Oof. Swing and a miss here. At first I thought it was a Halloween themed album, then I was convinced I heard some circus music in there. One listen and done for this album. Even then, it was extremely difficult to make all the way through. This was brutal for the listener. I'd give a zero if available.

1.5 Yeah, I’m sorry, I don’t get this dude - Both of his albums have now sounded like The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack but if Danny Elfman was on deliriants when he composed it. I’m not someone normally opposed to unconventional music or vocals, but I really have no idea what this is supposed to be or whom it’s for. Like, I can’t imagine what would compel someone to be like “Oh man, you know what song I would kill to hear right now? Underground by Tom Waits.” Still, I would rather listen to this over that German industrial album we had or Throbbing Gristle, so I’ll bump it up to 1.5. I do think there’s a sense of musicianship buried underneath it all, and there’s no denying it takes a unique mind to put this kind of thing together, but still, it just doesn’t speak to me at all - it feels more like a thing for edgy theatre kids. Most positive thing I can say about this album - driving through Hollywood at night time listening to 16 Shells From a 30.6 was kind of a vibe, but I don’t think I would go out of my way to do it again.

Calling vocals and instrumentation that you would expect from a drunken person "experimental rock" is an insult to experimental rock.

Not for me at all.

Nope. Never really enjoyed his “music.” To each, her own. In my opinion, he’s boring.

This was dare I say torturous. Nothing remotely enjoyable or compelling here.

Ugh. Why would this be on a list of anything that anyone should ever listen to? People compare tom waits to beefheart and zappa, and I feel like this album just proves all that wrong and shows that hes not "experimental" or "unique", he just sucks. 1/5
