Not too bad

So many styles yet so little substance. All over the place production wise. Not a good listen at all

J’ai pas compris la DA… j’ai dû aller sur Wikipedia pour me confirmer ce que j’écoutais. C’est pas degueu mais cet album va dans tous les sens et c’est dommage.

This album is decent, not sure why it's on the list

Ganske kjedelig album, tamt.

I truly have no comment lmao

I have heard their songs here and then on the radio but never listened to a whole album before. Quite o.k. but nothing that really hooks me. Expected much more mexicana. 2,5

It's okay in places but not very memorable

This band out of California is another one I’ve never heard of until now. The first half of the album seemed sluggish and forgettable, and could be used as a movie soundtrack. The energy picked up as the album got into the last half, but unfortunately reverted to being sluggish and forgettable towards the end. I did enjoy the mariachi style of “Across the Wire’.

Really good instrumentals. Vocals are not for me.

Sounds like music from a computer game cutsceen

Alright, a bit long

not really my vibe

I like the idea of it, but ultimately found it dull- the songs never really go anywhere.

Just a total nothingburger of an album. You shouldn’t listen to this album, this shouldn’t be on the list. The singing isn’t above average, the instrumentals could be lent to any other singer/songwriter to do a better job with, and nothing sticks. I will not remember one thing from this record. “Close Behind” is my pick, if I had to give one to listen to. I’m astounded by the number of rave reviews this thing has. The blending of genres isn’t impactful, it’s hazy and dull. It doesn’t do any one thing well, it tries to do many things and they all turn out meh at best. Just way too bland. Soft 2/5

Musically competent mishmash of folky alt rock and various south of the (U.S.) border styles. A lot of care and craft was obviously put into the recording of this album, but the purpose of all of this isn't really evident in the grooves.

This album is just fine. Nothing really sticks out about this, but I do like the latin influence and guitar. Album cover is offensively bad. 5/10

I know calexico from a colaboration they did with Iron and Wine, didn't expect to see them today. A nice surprise. this is an interesting album. I like how the music style slowly drifts from a laid back iron and wine style music to a mexican style sound. Very cool. Overall, good but nothing for me to really grab on to.

I don't know. Meh? Why is this album on this list?

The sort of band which makes people think indie is all twee. Terrible.

It gets boring pretty soon! I can't even remember any song past 4th or 5th :-( Also, like the country albums I'm getting, I'm totally sure these are not for my taste

me sangran los ojos, quien ha diseñado esa portada??! dios 💀 lo peor de todo es que el álbum no está tan mal album 2.5/5 portada -10282818/5

Cool for what it is. For the deaf dumb and blind.

Never heard of calexico and still really havent- dont really know what i was listening to

Reckon it's a well made album but not really my style of music

It was alright but felt like every "Indy" band out there currently.

I’m sure they’re great guys with really cool music taste but Feast of Wire does not leave an impression on me at all. It’s straight up opening-act-core.

Nice melodies. His singing isn't the best though. I can't say I would listen to this again.

A double album? It came and went like a Texas wind. Blew by quickly, which means it didn’t really reach my ears. Started strongly, but with the exception of a couple of mid-record tracks it was a slow and meandering disappointment.

Enjoyed it but not enough to listen to it again

Not bad. Not something I would listen to regularly, but I enjoyed some of it.

It's got interesting sound but not enough to make up for it coming across as kind of a boring listen to me, nothing really keeping me Maybe this one's just about the experience, and at the end of the day, experience it I did

iwie schlager, iwie country, iwie folk. meh

Oh man, this started off promising. I thought I was getting into this American Alt-Country record with mariachi influences and I was so in. Then the record turned into this mostly instrumental jig where some sounds turned me off and I lost interest. With the exception of a well-played jazz tune near the end, eh (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)

Some cool stuff here, but not for me. Favorite track was Crumble and it had no vocals, so maybe its the lead singer i didn't enjoy. Original sound.

I appreciated the instrumentation right off the bat of the album. Quattro sounds like it couldve been a Raggae/roots song to start with and it ended as a poppy amalgamation. Close Behind was probably my favorite track even though it is an instrumental. Nothing crazy good or bad. Id say 2.5 stars and rounding down

In one ear, out the other

Interesting, quirky, not sure I really got into it but it floated along happily enough and could easily hear it in a hip coffee shop somewhere.

Not my style.

Ok sim I’ll get the negative stuff out of the way first. To start I think this might be one of the worst album covers I’ve ever seen. I just hate the cover it’s ugly and boring and doesn’t give you anything to be excited about or curious about. The other main problem I have is ai don’t love the singer. I appreciate his subtly delivery but his actual voice is underwhelming and not soft and powerful. Those things being said, this album is very inter and unique musically. There’s a lot of genre blending, like I loved and appreciated the instrumentals so much that I gave this album several “relistens”. There’s a lot of blues rock and a lot of Latin rock. I leaned towards liking the Latin sounding songs the most. I didn’t care for the first several songs, I was really turned off by the beginning of the album but then they really started to show their talent and more importantly there was more instrumentals which I personally liked way more than the songs with lyrics. As whole I can’t rate the album very highly but I can say that the three songs I saved from the album (close behind, attack el robot! Attack!, and güero canelo) I really loved. Like those three songs on a single would be a must have for me. But sadly the other songs really weighted down my opinion of the album as a whole.

I found this hard work & pretty forgettable.

boring

Ok. I like the Mexican influence and sound, but I'm good.

Didn’t care for it

Was okay, but not really my type of music. Too jazzy

It was fine, but I doubt I'll revisit.

This was 2 album with no direction

Not for me

really not bad, not for me

2.0 - Weak

I was not expecting this. Pretty interesting but not my favorite. I liked all the instrumental stuff but not much else. It was ok. Crumble and Pepita were my favorite. Would give it a solid 2.5

Disc two?!?! Naw man. If I’m gunna listen to some El Mexicano music, then the guy singing can’t sound like Great Value Ed Sheeran. Also the instrumentals felt tedious. Felt like they couldn’t decide if they wanted to be smooth jazz or bolero or ranchera or whatever. Not Mexican enough to be played at a Mexican restaurant, but not jazz enough to be played at a bar.

Best Song: Quatro - World Drifts In. Fine indie rock. Worst Song: Attack! El Robot! Attack! Like a lot of the album, just meh. Overall: Sure, it's fine, but doesn't a title like "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" imply some degree of elevated quality or uniqueness? The list needs to be at least an order of magnitude larger to warrant this altogether okay album's inclusion.

I was really vibing with this album. Loving the first 2 songs and then the third short song took me out of it. The start of Black heart didn't help at all. While the album tried to find itself again after that I couldn't. While later songs weren't bad at all I couldn't get back to that initial feeling I had from the first two songs.

interesting but doesn’t quite hit . 2

Enjoyable listen without being memorable

This seemed like a really bland version of all the genres that came together to create it. Boring as hell.

This started out with promise - the first song was a nice Radio 2 pop song. The album then devolved into b-side quality before settling on some jazz jams.

t surprised me. was not what i expected. some cool instrumentals. would not listen again tho, boring most of the time

Not for me

5/10. I'll be honest I'm a little confused as to why this was included on the list as I'd never heard of the band and they have very few listeners on Spotify. I thought maybe this was some diamond in the rough that the critics had uncovered. Granted it's not really my genre and nothing about it was bad as such but nothing apart from the occasional jazzy note stood out to me and I just ended up thinking it was quite middle-of-the-road, which in the context of this list probably warrants a two star score.

Mid to high twos. I think they have better albums.

Too much jazz

pretty boring - maybe would've hit if heard it in high school during my emo phase

Not amazing, folk mostly instrumental

Interesting at times but overall uneventful. The genre bending is here is nothing to be amazed by. Plus the album art is puzzling at best

I was expecting to be a woman idk why

Interesting mix of a number of genres. Can hear Latin and Country in there against a backdrop of Indie Rock. 10/10 for trying something new but unfortunately did not tickle my fancy. 2/5 19/12/24

I’ve never listened to Calexico because they always struck me as a flash in the pan that a lot of people liked at the moment and quickly wrote off. I got this impression because in my record store’s indie section, there were always Calexico albums that NEVER sold. They were there forever. So to me? That said there was no point. Now. What is to be made of this album now that I’ve heard it? That feels about right to me. This doesn’t really do much. It doesn’t lean far enough into something interesting. Hey does anyone else like Murder by Death? They give me more of a weird desperate lost in a desert vibe. That’s not even fair.

Interesting, but too polished.

This was okay. Better than I expected but I didn’t love it.

interesting. It wasn't all one thing, a bit all over the place. Almost like a movie soundtrack. Nothing memorable. 25 song double album is just too long.

Not for me. Was expecting hip hop and got weird and boring ballads. Some of the instrumentals were ok.

Boring

Didn’t leave an impression on me.

alright, some songs had a great sound, but felt a little all-over-the-place in general.

Album 548 of 1001 Calexico - Feast of Wire (2003) Rating : 2 / 5 Didn't do much for me. Could just be me.

the b side clears the a side out the water but it still wasn't enough to carry it out of the sub average grade

Could see how people like this album, but it is just not my vibe

beetje los lobos light...instrumentals zijn beter dan de gezongen nummers...

Started out decent but then fell off. High 2

Atmospheric and pleasant enough, but ultimately I was bored shitless by this.

Some nice folksy music. Nothing to write home about.

Hard to find this album... make a deal with Spotify or GTFO...

Sitten levy tekee metamorfoosin löyhästi lattariteemaisten bileiden taustamusiikiksi. Sympaattinen 2+.

Not my thing. Album suffers from loudness wars. Everything sounds too loud and also too polished. It’s like a slightly more interesting version of Mumford and Sons except Mumford has better dynamics. A lot of music in the past 15-20 years has suffered from too much polish. Everything is maxed out and clipped and the highs and lows are missing for me.

a lot of this was just there to zone out to. probably closer to 3 could i write poetry to this?

It's a nice sound but fades into nothingness after a while. Would like in smaller doses

Ok. Not a fan of the last bit of this album, but the first part had a few good songs. 2.5/5

Some moments I liked, but was definitely a bit of a chore to get through. Favorites were mostly the instrumental tracks. Will I listen to again: 2%

This was absolutely nothing special, can’t understand why it made the list. 2.5/5

It was okay but couldn't be bothered with the whole double disc album

I thought this was fine but not particularly striking.

Normale I dig that kind of style but between circussy folk and pseudo depth I am rather not invested.

Boring and possibly to blame for that folk revival that came later. Felt like it had no real substance, just vibe.

This started strong, and then slipped into a dream like mode. It faded fast, and so did my interest. There's no way I'm making it to Disc 2.

A very, very, very subdued record. Even with active listening, it kind of avoids fully "getting it". It's a little Texan, a little indie... I find myself even finding it difficult to feel all that strongly, negatively or positively, about it. Favorite tracks: "Sunken Waltz"

*sigh*. Give me punch brothers or their solo stuff. Bela fleck. Billy strings. Sierra Hull. Not this warmed over stuff the Band did better. Or eagles. Or the birds. Or the allman bros or lynyrd skynMusic must develop or die. To be fair, this is competent. It has some nice parts. But give me Chris Thile or Chris Eldridge. Or bela fleck. Or anything that doesn’t fit a predictable pattern.

wasnt bad. But nothing was that memorable from a first listen. No standout songs for me. Its ok for background music maybe.

Wasn't keen first time around but it did grow on me. Probably just a 2 for now but with a few more listens - who knows?

Strikingly bad album art, like so bad that I hope it is intentionally this bad. Two very different fonts with weird placements, the way that "Calexico" is stretched vertically and disproportionately, the little VG logo on bottom left, the weird gold/brown haze, that terrible grey skin? Wow. This album cover would appear on "1001 bad album artworks". It feels like someone's first draft image description for what they want for a tattoo before a tattoo artist has to decipher a bad idea and turn it into something that will look good. "Give me a girl with grey skin smirking and sitting on a skateboard with a golden brown hazy texture behind her, and terrible fonts." It took me a while to get that it's "Feast of Wire" and not "Feast of Wine". The font really hurts the legibility here. The music is cool. I actually would say that I really enjoy the music. It's kind of indie rock western folky country slight Mexican noir and makes for a great platform for a listening experience. Unfortunately, the vocalist does nothing for me. His vocal sound is too straightforward and borders on bland and uninteresting. I don't feel excited to try to feel what he is feeling, I don't feel enthused to check out the lyrics. Much like the font hurting the album art text legibility, the mix hurts his voice here because his voice is just a bit too low and doesn't have any interesting production choices- no playing with reverb, delay, saturation. "Not Even Stevie Nicks" is a standout song and sounds different than the rest both compositionally and instrumentally. Unfortunately when its playing just the acoustic guitar and vocals, the second guitar chord in the progression is hard for the player to play; I suspect it's like an awkward capo placement that isn't giving 100% pressure to the frets as it sounds like several notes aren't ringing out and get this tentative sound. Easy to ignore but for me it sounds I don't know, lazy? Like the guitar was recorded in one take and they were like "yea it's fine". Overall I would give this another listen, and I want to give it a 3 because it felt like a middling album on this list. But I'm going to give it a 2 because this list really should be 1001 truly standout amazing records.

It wasn't bad, just that I didn't quite resonate with it at first listen. Maybe I will come back to it and I will like it more in the future, but nonetheless it is interesting.

Not bad

This album was fine. No real flow to the album. Lots of instrumental passages that were kinda cool but didn't really reinforce each other. Interesting blend of stuff but ultimately kinda boring

I liked the instrumental tracks more than the vocals, which were giving Radiohead-lite. Sort of boring but not overly long.

Album bem normal. Nada demais para estar nessa lista. Não acrescenta.

Some interesting sounds and influences in there but I don’t know if I’ll revisit. Güero Canelo was a standout.

Not memorable for me

Albúm muy muy tranqui. Se hace largo y monótono, nunca se la termina de jugar un poco.

Not my type of music. I’m going to steal what Uncle Lucky said and say it changed genres a lot. Can’t deal with that. Already have enough uncertainty and instability in my life.

This was kind of all over the place. Not necessarily in a bad way, but a lot of different sounds. Parts I liked but probably won’t revisit

I notice this one is no longer on the list, as per the 2021 edition… makes sense as this is really not very good

Yawn. Quiet, slow, indie ish country…? Interesting, some songs seemed ok but not gonna check em out more.

Great mix of styles running through this album but it still manages to feels cohesive. 'Sunken Waltz' is the best offering but nothing really blows me away. 2+ stars.

Absolutely okay.

Not much my style but not bad.

first half, really enjoyed! But I'm right there with Charlie on this one: an overwhelming feeling of "I already have that." There wasn't anything too special to hang my hat on and go "wow, that was pretty unique." And I thought the second half of the album was less great and harder to get through. Could have pulled through with a 3 for this one, but I'm not feeling a strong pull to return. 2/5

I've heard the name for years but never actually listened. Over all pretty boring

Smacks to me of hipsters re-appropriating country

2 - It's been a couple days since I listened to this album and I don't really remember my thoughts. It didn't interest me too much.

Pretty cool folksy/pensive album with a Latin feel, but not much notable beyond that. I liked Not Even Stevie Nicks…

Idk!! I liked it but it was pretty boring. Good sounds thiugh

Not bad alternative music. Enjoyed listening to them.

Creative? Yes. Technically impressive? Probably. Enjoyable listening? Not really. Most of the tracks sounded like emotional montage music from a 2000s action movie.

überwiegend schwermütig. Crumble sticht hervor

If Fargo was set in the Yosemite Desert, this would be the soundtrack. It’s a mood for sure. It’s good music, too. Does it belong on this list? Not in lieu of some glaringly-overlooked albums.

The formality and tastefulness of this strand of indie rock that makes me pull the sheets over my face. This is Dances With Wolves; give me The Wild Bunch.

Svær at fastslå, lidt indierocket, men med alle mulige mærkelige vibes

Not my favorite

I thought this was going to be a fun little latin influenced folk album. I was wrong.

Not my fav

Riktigt slöseri med tid.

Unremarkable

Det var lite för lugnt för min smak. Bra att jobba till dock

An unknown artist for me, an interesting listen but not one I will revisit in the short term

2/5 not good enough

First half and last song were good, lost me in the 2nd half, felt like two separate bands

I didn't expect anything and i didn't get anything, just meh tbh, didn't hate it, didn't like it, somewhere stuck in the middle.

Needs more Mariachi and less white guy singing

Not my thing

So far, nothing stands out. This style of music just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s just white noise. I feel like I’m in a desert. So much vast emptiness. I really didn’t find it enjoyable. 4/10

The platonic ideal of the kinds of albums I let ruin my mood throughout the 00's. No thanks!

I remember when I first started to really explore the alt-country genre this band came up quite frequently. I only really listened to a few songs back then and never felt compelled to go any further. It turns out that I was right to do so. I like what they're going for better than the execution. There's albums from the likes of Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Neko Case, and many others that I would rather see on this list than this exercise in mediocrity.

folk avec une touche latin forgettable 5/10

I could see myself liking this if I heard it back when it came out in 2003 and if I was younger but twenty years later I find it just kind of boring. I didn't think there were many songs on here that stood out, one of which being a Love cover that's not as good or really that different than the original. All that being said, I didn't strongly dislike this one either, I just didn't hear any songs that pulled my interest or sounded unique. Standout Tracks: Sunken Waltz, Not Even Stevie Nicks..., Alone Again Or

Opzich lekker maar niet bijzonder

Apparently mariachi-rock is a thing, guess you do learn something new every day

This whole thing sounds like the soundtrack to some gritty HBO or Showtime series set in the southwest. Is it any good? It's alright I guess. Does it belong on the list? Probably not.

Gimmicky

Entirely unnoteworthy. It wasn't bad. I cannot really remember anything about it.

Very much a Sunday morning album

Ritmos muy tranquilos y relajados. Demasiada poca intensidad. Ciertamente me ha gustado poco

Alright indie type mariachi type music kinda weird

Not for me.

Sounded like a western soundtrack missed with Jazz, not the greatest, wouldn’t go back for another listen

Hated parts of this, enjoyed other parts of this, I’ll have forgotten about this album come next week…

I ate a little too much custard last night and ever since I've been blowing bubbles out of my bellend. It's a good day.

Not my cup of Alt Rock.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really my thing, pretty smooth though Favourite song: Track 13 - Güero Canelo

didn't blow me away. Some good sounds here and there but it leaned too much into the sullen indie vibe than the more exciting mariachi sound.

Sounds like this was meant for a kind of shit but ultimately enjoyable western which has Benedict Cumberbatch and the Rock Johnson in it.

mariachi rock? not a huge fan but it was still an interesting listen.

Levyn alku tuli kuunneltua sujuvasti vaan loppua kohti lässähti musiikista mitään tajuattoman korvaan turhan taiteelliseksi.

Ei jäänyt erityisesti mieleen. Sen verran, et suht miellyttävää oli kuunnella. Ok.

2/5. It’s a nice collection of songs but it doesn’t hit right. Sometimes feels a little too pretentious. Not bad, just doesn’t work for me. The mixing of genres is the highlight for sure.

- Some of the songs give me videogame soundtrack vibes (Book and the Canal, Pepita) - Love the Spanish flair - A fun listen, 2.5

Was kind of empty and not too exiting. Maybe just not my style. I’ll come back to it at some point but overall as of right now, as a whole album, feels uninteresting

Oh god it's frontier folk music aaaagghh no make it stop Wait hang on it's tex mex indie rock aaaaggghh no make it stop 2/5.

I don’t really know what this album is. Half the songs were greyed out on Spotify. Some cool mariachi stuff, some good songs, but it did not hold together. Maybe because half the songs are missing.

a lot of genre hopping without much success sometimes they're jazz, others they're rock inspired by latin sounds

Like an alternative Spanish style album. Not sure what the importance of this one as there were far greater albums in the 00s but I’ve realized this list isn’t about good or popular music. It’s about what random album was made in a time when no one else did it. Doesn’t matter if people listen to it. This is that kind of album. 4.7/10

This album has some ups and downs. I did enjoy some parts, but overall it is not my kind of music.

Muito chato

The cover and the blurb on Wikipedia got me pretty interested and then I started listening. This album has the rare honour of being one of the few that I could just not bear. They are competent musicians and have skillfully blended a lot of other people's original ideas into a 'will this do?' pile of plop. I think I'd choose the 'die' part of the book rather than listening to this beige-fest.

Not what I was expecting. Won't revisit.

Not my bag at all. I now remember why I have steered clear of this band. I just cannot cope with all that Latin country folk americana. It's just too much for my uncultured ears to handle.

sent a shudder down my spine, didn't really listen

Not for me and too moody

Did not listen

Does playing the first bit of each track with a random drops of the needle count as listened. Its the only way to get through some offerings.

Enoooooorm saai. Heb het niet langer volgehouden dan 4 nummers. Geen spice, geen melodie, geen leuke stem, niks aan.

First up, no disrespect to Victor Gastelum, but that cover art is horrid. The fonts, the white void, the clearly visible PhotoShop brushwork on that gold background stuff... yuk. Alternative, country, mariachi band, a jazzy 70s movie score, trip-hop, electronica - this album tries to be lots of things at once, and, all credit to Calexico, they seem like they know what they are doing. The problem I have is, I didn't come away feeling like I had gained any insight into WHY they are doing it. For all it's moody minor key musings, processed beats, and brassy Mexicana, it doesn't really do anything all that interesting. Feast Of Wire is confident and competent in it's shifts in style, but not without being strangely predictable both melodically and lyrically, to the point it borders on pointless pastiche (vultures, cacti, snakes? Ok, we get it). So, while it traverses unfamiliar territory within the alternative genre, it never really takes you anywhere unexpected or exciting. Might be more appealing to American audiences, but I won't be listening to this one again in a hurry, I'm afraid.

production is nice, but i dont really like the vocalist and its a bit too experimental for me

Not good, and not worth listening to. It's like a bad version of Blind Pilot but they don't commit to an actual sound, and never really develop anything interesting. The best bit was the odd jazz song right in the middle of the album that didn't need to be there. Favorite Song(s): Crumble

That was a tough experience

I still don't like country.

really bad. Got boring quickly and sound quality wasn't maybe the best. Guero Canelo was my fave but would not listen again.

Not for me

dont let the horrible album cover fool you, this is worse than it looks!

This album should be left alone unless you are intending to use the vinyl version to play Ultimate Frisbee or use it in hand to hand combat. My over all impression was that it would be a great album to poke your eyes out with a sharp stick. I’m sure his mother loves him though.

This sounds like the soundtrack to someone struggling to pick which color Patagonia puffy vest to buy

This sucks. Writing anything more will just piss me off entirely.

Too folky for me. Gimme Violent Femmes any day.

Nothing for me on this album. Esta fue una escucha dificil. But we haven't had Mexican food in a while, so maybe this weekend?

Mince.

Não achei graça nenhuma.

Dull. Labelled as indie but more like folk or country really.

as soon as the beat dropped, my heart and face sank it got better but not by much tbh NNN

1. zunken uualtz - 0 2. quatro - 0 3. black heart - 0 4. pepita - 0 5. ztevie nickz - 0 6. cloze behind - 1 7. birdz - 0 8. the book - 1 9. attack - 1 10. the uuire - 0 11. dub latina - 0 12. canelo - 0 13. horzez eye - 0 14. crumble - 1.5 15. doze - 1.5

Alright.

Easy listening album. Boring but nice to have as background music while you work. Nothing special, Calexico played it safe no risk or innovation. Same songs over and over with an eventual horn Fail.

Every time I thought a song was worthwhile I was almost immediately disappointed by the next one. Quattro - World Drifts in and Guero Canelo were the only two that stuck out to me. I never thought a 47 minute album could feel like 2 hours until now.

Did not enjoy.

no me hizo nada. Y la portada es fea.

no me gusta

...I expected something more uh, interesting? innovative? from this list for an album from 2003. this isn't doing anything for me. this feels like such a slog to listen to lol

like ordering Mexican food in Portland

For me, this had a lot of the right ingredients, but somehow came out half baked. Music is solid, lyrically I wasn't feeling it. I could tell there was passion and intent, and maybe I'm just not in the mindset to appreciate it, but this was a dud for me.

Got bored

weird electro-indie, not feeling it at all

this is bad. the world does not need an hour and a half of latino country music. and that album cover looks like the type of homemade shit people try to flog to you down market street in manchester.

It's not as good as 'Is this it' by The Strokes, is it?

Para mi está desubicado en la lista. Le pondría ceros estrellas pero no se puede.

A juzgar por esta muestra, me aburriría en un recital de Calexico.

I didn't love this at all...

I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
