Initially really enjoyable but the extended instrumental sections started to wear after a while

A Mexican western-infused alt-country record with plenty of acoustics and mariachi. There are a lot of cool ideas, like the fusion of jam, jazz, and Latin in "Crumble" that gives off Santana vibes. I had low expectations going into the first song since it's the most popular, but I was pleasantly surprised. Some forgettable tracks, but I have a few standouts, and there's usually something interesting happening in many others. Favorites: Quattro, Black Heart, Close Behind, Guero Canelo

Varied jazz, chill, folk noise. Max says 4. I say 3.5 but that's not an option. Not super memorable, but not unenjoyable

An interesting mix of modern alternative and salsa. Enjoyed this as a departure from the regular fare on the list, as it brought new ideas to the table and was well-executed instrumentally and production-wise. Don’t think this LP packed enough of an artistic, cohesive punch to land on my faves list, but I definitely see myself revisiting tracks here if I’m feeling stuck in a rock rut.

An interesting yet uneven blend of latin and indie rock.

Judging by that album cover, you would never guess that this is actually an indie country album with mariachi influences. Very unique. I don't think I've ever heard anything like this.

Sometimes I'd like some context for why an album is on this list. Because I'd like to see some Poi Dog or Reivers or the Origin. This is good music. I'm not sure what really sets it apart. Nothing too catchy. Maybe it's deeper than I can appreciate?

I enjoyed the alternative + latin mellow mariachi mixed in. Good mix of instrumental/vibe tracks and lyric tracks. Liked Close Behind the most and Sunken Waltz was a good intro. Enjoyed the experience.

Honest and straight

Was hoping for more, didn't really do it for me

An interesting mix of genres, and the genres do vary to one extent or another as the album progresses. But as far as what this album has to offer, that is more or less it.

Nothing exceptional or spectacular, but if you’re driving or cooking and want to fill the silence, it’s a nice listen.

When I saw the cover I thought, nice we're getting some punky mexican band. Was quite surprised by the sound but I did enjoy it a lot!

Never heard of this band, also removed from the book so didn't read about the album. First impression was oh no, more mid 00s Americana. Ok so it's not just that, there is variety, but for whatever reason I don't care about any of the songs, it's just on in the background. It's not bad bad. Maybe it's because I went to see Yo La Tengo last night and this is bad by comparison. Speaking of which, why is there no Yo La Tengo in this book? There are 2x Ryan Adams albums and a fair bit of this sort of meh. There's room. Anyway near the end now and this band are pretty tight, particularly on some of the more jazzy numbers, I'm giving it a 3.

Honestly, I am not in the mood today for music I don't recognize or know at all. I need some familiar favourites, some easy 5-star classics. I groaned, out loud and obnoxiously when I saw this album come up. I thought "Really? More unknown fucking crap that I don't give a shit about that I have to suffer through???" But I'm having a hard time right now, so I was being a judgemental bitch. I hate the band name, the album name, and the album cover. But, and it's a big BUT, the music was chill. It wasn't the awful ear assault I was expecting and I actually looped all the way through without batting an eye. I am pleased. Not impressed, but pleased for now.

My question for the editors: Why include all these bands that want to be Neutral Milk Hotel when you could have just included them instead? Best track: Close Behind

I was worried when the first track was bog-standard Americana. Then Quattro, the second track, had some beautiful horns playing, which I'm hoping aren't just a sample, but the shape of things to come. (They were not) Track three, Black Heart introduces haunting strings and ties into the album name a bit. Around this point I lost focus and did some chores while the album continued to play. It had lost my interest. Got completely bored halfway through the album and tried again a few hours later to make sure it isn't just my energy level. No, it just isn't grabbing my attention. Putting a mostly instrumental at the halfway point didn't help and transitioning to modern Jazz influences at some point isn't helping. Across the Wire seems to be an instructor on the theme of the album, and though I am not a huge fan of Mariachi style, it does hammer the thrust home. I like the message but not a huge fan of the delivery. The final track, "No Doze" tells me what I need to take to make it through the album.

Ok. Alt rock mariachi. Yeah. Sure. Let's hear this. Weirdly kinda reminds me of the fleet foxes. I like it. Weird. Hmmm idk. This is kinda losing me. Maybe. Lets see. Meh, I didn't get it.

Enjoyed the first track but then it all became a bit miscellaneously jingly-jangly. I thought it had picked up again at one point but then I realised I was listening to a tyre advert.

At times rises to the level of mildly pleasing background music (during the instrumental stretches). Otherwise did not dig.

This is a normal but interesting album. While listening I felt like I was driving through the American Southwest — dusty roads, open landscapes, and a quiet, cinematic atmosphere. It’s countryside music with a unique twist: a mix of Americana, mariachi, indie rock, and desert vibes. The instrumentals are tasteful, the mood is consistent, and the whole record has a nice, slightly melancholic charm. Nothing flashy or groundbreaking, but it’s well-crafted and pleasant to listen to. Feast of Wire is a solid, atmospheric album that works well as background music or for a relaxed late-night drive. Easy and enjoyable.

Not really my cup of tea. Most of the songs sounded like a weird mix of imitation mariachi and a spaghetti western soundtrack.

I thought this would be good, but it was so boring. Come on.

Music for guys with mustaches and leather satchels and women with those straight bangs... you know exactly who I mean.

This did very little for me. A pretty mediocre collection of soft pop-folk songs with a quasi-country-western and Mexican influence. I was teetering on a 3, but as the album went on, I found myself wanting it to be over, which pushed me down to a 2. The dreadful album art and title certainly didn't help either.

This really fits with it's American indie brethren of the era, but with a mariachi twist. It makes for nice enough background music, but lacks enough soul and conviction to be an album I could fall in love with.

Triple blind on this one. The music was good but honestly not memorable. I’m writing this after finishing the album less than 4 hours ago and I can’t really remember any songs or melodies. Pretty garden variety overall

I'll give this album some credit for sounding different than a lot of indie rock, but overall, I wasn't a fan of this one. I was bored throughout the whole listen. This is the third 2 in a row that I am giving out this week, so now I'm starting to wonder if I'm the problem.

I really wanted to like this album because it is so different. It's not that I don't like it but it's not blowing my mind. It feels way more like a movie score than a folk rock album. Nothing on it really stood out but I enjoyed the experience.

Attack!", and you'd imagine there should be a lot of frenetic energy or something but no, just a hushed latin alternative esque song with some beeps and boops. Early 2000's indie is annoying to me. Too long, too slow, too boring. Maybe I'm annoyed because a certain hipster subset of my friend group would only listen to/talk about this kind of stuff, and it just got overhyped for what it was. A neat song or two (El Robot) but the rest was mid. 2/5

Who? This album got a 20 year remastering? What? Never heard of them and after listening to this, I know why. The theme this week must be "BORING", back to back to back albums with no muscle, no hits, nothing upbeat, nothing that differentiates them from an indie album you get for free at a concert in the local park. The second half is very instrumental, not a bad thing since he kinda sucks at singing. Nothing memorable. I've nearly lost all faith in this Top 1001 list. There's NOTHING that would justify this album being included. Dreary, boring, dark, generic, hitless, below average vocals, below average songs, etc, etc. Two stars for wasting 35 minutes of my time.

2 stars It wasn’t offensively bad but it was forgettable and it didn’t inspire any desire to revisit or save anything.

- This album was, uh, pleasant and inoffensive, I guess. It's kind of lethargic with clean production. I would have liked more energy and grit. - That's especially in contrast to what I expected going in... I thought it was going to be metal because of the (terrible) cover and the title "Feast of Wire", but it ended up giving me a Matt Mays and Conor Oberst do Jazzy Americana + Mariachi, but without the great storytelling (I prefer each of those other artists to this). - To be honest, I wasn't interested/invested enough in the singing to pay attention to the lyrics because the voice was bland and quiet, so it got lost behind the louder instruments.

Nothing wrong with this but I got about three fourths through the album before I found something that really resonated and then it was over. Interesting sound played well but kind of slight. Unfortunately I don't think I'll remember this in most contexts. Shame, since it seemed right in my zone. Could have used more variations, nothing here to hang my hat on like I can with Jim White Favorite Tracks: Across the Wire, Crumble

The Good: We are in for a Feast! The Bad: I am not that much into Wire… The Ugly: The album cover… I mean, really? Don’t believe I had ever heard of these chaps before, and now that I have, don’t really believe I have a great wish to know these chaps anymore. I can understand that one would like to do a little fusion music, but I don’t understand how it is even attempted by blending the styles they are blending… it’s like watching a 7-year old having fun at the soda fountain, mixing all the drinks into one cup, proudly taking that first sip while keeping the positive look on his face while in reality the desire would’ve been for just a Coke… without all the other shit mixed into it. Calexico is just an odd duck that makes no sense in my world… 2*

I don't feel like this band has reached their fullest potential here, I think they've displayed the possibility of it. In this project there's a few songs I could repeat, I could also easily never look them up again and not feel a thing about it. I'd rather see them produce somebody with a stronger sense of direction. 2.1/5

2.5 Idk, another case where I have no idea what this band actually is? It’s not enough to be two great musicians, which obviously these two guys are - but there’s no identity as a band here. Every song sounds wildly different. Jazz, pop, indie rock, Latin-infused funk. Being really good at music imo is not enough to make your album indispensable.

White boy stuns waiter by speaking flawless Spanish

Name sounded familiar, but didn't know what to expect. And indeed, don't know what I got. It was a sort of half folky half I don't know what, mish mash. Bits were ok but that's all. Best track was the first and it was down hill all the way after that .only worth a 2.

It is fine but not engaging for me. Not too long which is nice. Some things had cool vibes.

it's the first time i hear from these guys and they did not fail to dissapoint. i mean i know indie rock is supposed to be pretentious, but if you're going to do stuff that's new or you personally consider original at least do some better work on the mastering and the engineering. i dont think i will be coming back to that album. i consider myself a pretentious prick but that was just a bland try to do something that has actually already been done. i appreciate the use of different themes (the latin stuff was a nice pleasent surprise as a combination to the more indie sound) and not sticking to one style tho

It's okay in places but not very memorable

This band out of California is another one I’ve never heard of until now. The first half of the album seemed sluggish and forgettable, and could be used as a movie soundtrack. The energy picked up as the album got into the last half, but unfortunately reverted to being sluggish and forgettable towards the end. I did enjoy the mariachi style of “Across the Wire’.

Just a total nothingburger of an album. You shouldn’t listen to this album, this shouldn’t be on the list. The singing isn’t above average, the instrumentals could be lent to any other singer/songwriter to do a better job with, and nothing sticks. I will not remember one thing from this record. “Close Behind” is my pick, if I had to give one to listen to. I’m astounded by the number of rave reviews this thing has. The blending of genres isn’t impactful, it’s hazy and dull. It doesn’t do any one thing well, it tries to do many things and they all turn out meh at best. Just way too bland. Soft 2/5

Musically competent mishmash of folky alt rock and various south of the (U.S.) border styles. A lot of care and craft was obviously put into the recording of this album, but the purpose of all of this isn't really evident in the grooves.

This album is just fine. Nothing really sticks out about this, but I do like the latin influence and guitar. Album cover is offensively bad. 5/10

I know calexico from a colaboration they did with Iron and Wine, didn't expect to see them today. A nice surprise. this is an interesting album. I like how the music style slowly drifts from a laid back iron and wine style music to a mexican style sound. Very cool. Overall, good but nothing for me to really grab on to.

I’m sure they’re great guys with really cool music taste but Feast of Wire does not leave an impression on me at all. It’s straight up opening-act-core.

A double album? It came and went like a Texas wind. Blew by quickly, which means it didn’t really reach my ears. Started strongly, but with the exception of a couple of mid-record tracks it was a slow and meandering disappointment.

Oh man, this started off promising. I thought I was getting into this American Alt-Country record with mariachi influences and I was so in. Then the record turned into this mostly instrumental jig where some sounds turned me off and I lost interest. With the exception of a well-played jazz tune near the end, eh (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)

Some cool stuff here, but not for me. Favorite track was Crumble and it had no vocals, so maybe its the lead singer i didn't enjoy. Original sound.

I appreciated the instrumentation right off the bat of the album. Quattro sounds like it couldve been a Raggae/roots song to start with and it ended as a poppy amalgamation. Close Behind was probably my favorite track even though it is an instrumental. Nothing crazy good or bad. Id say 2.5 stars and rounding down

Interesting, quirky, not sure I really got into it but it floated along happily enough and could easily hear it in a hip coffee shop somewhere.

Ok sim I’ll get the negative stuff out of the way first. To start I think this might be one of the worst album covers I’ve ever seen. I just hate the cover it’s ugly and boring and doesn’t give you anything to be excited about or curious about. The other main problem I have is ai don’t love the singer. I appreciate his subtly delivery but his actual voice is underwhelming and not soft and powerful. Those things being said, this album is very inter and unique musically. There’s a lot of genre blending, like I loved and appreciated the instrumentals so much that I gave this album several “relistens”. There’s a lot of blues rock and a lot of Latin rock. I leaned towards liking the Latin sounding songs the most. I didn’t care for the first several songs, I was really turned off by the beginning of the album but then they really started to show their talent and more importantly there was more instrumentals which I personally liked way more than the songs with lyrics. As whole I can’t rate the album very highly but I can say that the three songs I saved from the album (close behind, attack el robot! Attack!, and güero canelo) I really loved. Like those three songs on a single would be a must have for me. But sadly the other songs really weighted down my opinion of the album as a whole.

I was not expecting this. Pretty interesting but not my favorite. I liked all the instrumental stuff but not much else. It was ok. Crumble and Pepita were my favorite. Would give it a solid 2.5

Disc two?!?! Naw man. If I’m gunna listen to some El Mexicano music, then the guy singing can’t sound like Great Value Ed Sheeran. Also the instrumentals felt tedious. Felt like they couldn’t decide if they wanted to be smooth jazz or bolero or ranchera or whatever. Not Mexican enough to be played at a Mexican restaurant, but not jazz enough to be played at a bar.

Best Song: Quatro - World Drifts In. Fine indie rock. Worst Song: Attack! El Robot! Attack! Like a lot of the album, just meh. Overall: Sure, it's fine, but doesn't a title like "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" imply some degree of elevated quality or uniqueness? The list needs to be at least an order of magnitude larger to warrant this altogether okay album's inclusion.

I was really vibing with this album. Loving the first 2 songs and then the third short song took me out of it. The start of Black heart didn't help at all. While the album tried to find itself again after that I couldn't. While later songs weren't bad at all I couldn't get back to that initial feeling I had from the first two songs.

This started out with promise - the first song was a nice Radio 2 pop song. The album then devolved into b-side quality before settling on some jazz jams.

5/10. I'll be honest I'm a little confused as to why this was included on the list as I'd never heard of the band and they have very few listeners on Spotify. I thought maybe this was some diamond in the rough that the critics had uncovered. Granted it's not really my genre and nothing about it was bad as such but nothing apart from the occasional jazzy note stood out to me and I just ended up thinking it was quite middle-of-the-road, which in the context of this list probably warrants a two star score.

I’ve never listened to Calexico because they always struck me as a flash in the pan that a lot of people liked at the moment and quickly wrote off. I got this impression because in my record store’s indie section, there were always Calexico albums that NEVER sold. They were there forever. So to me? That said there was no point. Now. What is to be made of this album now that I’ve heard it? That feels about right to me. This doesn’t really do much. It doesn’t lean far enough into something interesting. Hey does anyone else like Murder by Death? They give me more of a weird desperate lost in a desert vibe. That’s not even fair.

Alkuun vaikuttaa, että yhtyeen mietteliäs (ja ihmeen tehokas) folk on heidän ainoa ideansa. Sitten levy tekee metamorfoosin löyhästi lattariteemaisten bileiden taustamusiikiksi. Sympaattinen 2+.

Not my thing. Album suffers from loudness wars. Everything sounds too loud and also too polished. It’s like a slightly more interesting version of Mumford and Sons except Mumford has better dynamics. A lot of music in the past 15-20 years has suffered from too much polish. Everything is maxed out and clipped and the highs and lows are missing for me.

It was okay but couldn't be bothered with the whole double disc album

I thought this was fine but not particularly striking.

Normale I dig that kind of style but between circussy folk and pseudo depth I am rather not invested.

Boring and possibly to blame for that folk revival that came later. Felt like it had no real substance, just vibe.

This started strong, and then slipped into a dream like mode. It faded fast, and so did my interest. There's no way I'm making it to Disc 2.

A very, very, very subdued record. Even with active listening, it kind of avoids fully "getting it". It's a little Texan, a little indie... I find myself even finding it difficult to feel all that strongly, negatively or positively, about it. Favorite tracks: "Sunken Waltz"

*sigh*. Give me punch brothers or their solo stuff. Bela fleck. Billy strings. Sierra Hull. Not this warmed over stuff the Band did better. Or eagles. Or the birds. Or the allman bros or lynyrd skynMusic must develop or die. To be fair, this is competent. It has some nice parts. But give me Chris Thile or Chris Eldridge. Or bela fleck. Or anything that doesn’t fit a predictable pattern.

Strikingly bad album art, like so bad that I hope it is intentionally this bad. Two very different fonts with weird placements, the way that "Calexico" is stretched vertically and disproportionately, the little VG logo on bottom left, the weird gold/brown haze, that terrible grey skin? Wow. This album cover would appear on "1001 bad album artworks". It feels like someone's first draft image description for what they want for a tattoo before a tattoo artist has to decipher a bad idea and turn it into something that will look good. "Give me a girl with grey skin smirking and sitting on a skateboard with a golden brown hazy texture behind her, and terrible fonts." It took me a while to get that it's "Feast of Wire" and not "Feast of Wine". The font really hurts the legibility here. The music is cool. I actually would say that I really enjoy the music. It's kind of indie rock western folky country slight Mexican noir and makes for a great platform for a listening experience. Unfortunately, the vocalist does nothing for me. His vocal sound is too straightforward and borders on bland and uninteresting. I don't feel excited to try to feel what he is feeling, I don't feel enthused to check out the lyrics. Much like the font hurting the album art text legibility, the mix hurts his voice here because his voice is just a bit too low and doesn't have any interesting production choices- no playing with reverb, delay, saturation. "Not Even Stevie Nicks" is a standout song and sounds different than the rest both compositionally and instrumentally. Unfortunately when its playing just the acoustic guitar and vocals, the second guitar chord in the progression is hard for the player to play; I suspect it's like an awkward capo placement that isn't giving 100% pressure to the frets as it sounds like several notes aren't ringing out and get this tentative sound. Easy to ignore but for me it sounds I don't know, lazy? Like the guitar was recorded in one take and they were like "yea it's fine". Overall I would give this another listen, and I want to give it a 3 because it felt like a middling album on this list. But I'm going to give it a 2 because this list really should be 1001 truly standout amazing records.

It wasn't bad, just that I didn't quite resonate with it at first listen. Maybe I will come back to it and I will like it more in the future, but nonetheless it is interesting.

I liked the instrumental tracks more than the vocals, which were giving Radiohead-lite. Sort of boring but not overly long.

I remember when I first started to really explore the alt-country genre this band came up quite frequently. I only really listened to a few songs back then and never felt compelled to go any further. It turns out that I was right to do so. I like what they're going for better than the execution. There's albums from the likes of Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Neko Case, and many others that I would rather see on this list than this exercise in mediocrity.

I could see myself liking this if I heard it back when it came out in 2003 and if I was younger but twenty years later I find it just kind of boring. I didn't think there were many songs on here that stood out, one of which being a Love cover that's not as good or really that different than the original. All that being said, I didn't strongly dislike this one either, I just didn't hear any songs that pulled my interest or sounded unique.
