Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Swan dress Bjork rules. One of her more tender albums that I don't throw on too often. That being said, the singles are hard.
Bjork at her ethereal haunting best - what a great album to sink into and ignore the world! I only really knew the singles from this before, so it was good to listen to the rest of the album for once - will be added to my play later pile for certain
Whoa what. I have never listened to Bjork before and was not ready for this to be this good. Captivating is a good word for it, I think. I really enjoyed this. Several tracks stood out: "Hidden Place," "It's Not up to You," and "Pagan Poetry" were my favorites. It reminded me a lot of elements I love in Radiohead's Kid A.
Very good
her voice is gorgeous and the production is super atmospheric. I couldn't really pick out a standard track as it all blurs and I don't think this is an album I will revisit very much. Still glad I listened. 4
Very nice
Haunting, orchestral, fascinating
Typisch Björk - gar nöd mies. 1 muemer ihre laa: Sie macht unbeirrt ihri Musig. Das Album isch usechoo, wo d No Angels ihri grosse Erfolg gfieret händ.. drum giz äs 4i
This is such a lovely album - really Bjork at her best in my opinion. It's got that glacial ambience to it, and feels very minimalist, while still being interesting. She also sings beautifully on it, which isn't always the case. Despite that minimal, light-touch style, it also has a great warmth. Very nice indeed.
Not my favorite of her albums, but def keeps growing on me with each listen.
3.6 3x
Kuulostaa todella kauniilta.
I enjoyed this. She's incredibly talented.
I’ve listened to this album before and have most of the songs in my playlist. I still listened to it again though and it’s definitely a good album. Hidden Place is probably up there in my favorite songs ever.
I’ll give it to her; the production is fucking immaculate. It’s a goddamn masterclass and second to very few if any. The writing is unique and original. Feels fresh and alive. Lyrics waver between profound and pretentious, much like her vocal choices. Although, in my opinion, it’s more pretentious than anything else. Seriously what the fuck is she doing. It’s annoying and I can’t take it seriously. Honestly confused at how anyone can. I don’t listen to Björk, but I recognize her impact and talent. I know this is good, but I hope to never listen again. 4/5
Beautiful, if you're in the mood. Irritating if you aren't.
Wonderful alternative pop. Ambient mixed with unique beats. Quite fine, but uneven. Some of these tracks are the best in her class, tho.
Sorry but all I could hear during Frosti was Freddy Fazbear coming for me. I love the mystical style of this one and her voice is immaculate. Reminds me of the vocalist from the NieR soundtrack. Favorites were It's Not up to You, Pagan Poetry, and Unison.
Björk is a very fantano/ rym core artist and Vespertine is the most fantano/ rym core Björk album. I actually haven’t heard it till now, I know debut and that’s a really good album. This album is good, but I don’t get the hype for it the best track IMO was the first one then it’s just consistently a bit worse than that. I think it’s a 4/5
3,6
First exposure to Björk as an artist, looking forward to hearing more. I have previously listened to Sigur Ros and this reminded me of that a lot, really ethereal.
part skittering and drifting electronica, part ethereal Bjork - a lovely listen, packed with ideas and melodies
Great Bjork
Another fantastic Björk album but also a sore reminder that Homogenic isn’t on this list for some nonsense reason. Anyhow… Vespertine is very subdued and abstract compared to the more bombastic art pop of Björk’s previous albums. The production is skittering and intricate - it’s incredibly detailed yet somehow gives the impression of being sparse and I don’t know how they pulled that off. Björk’s vocals are divine as always and, while there aren’t as many huge singles as previous records, there are still some standout tracks like Hidden Place, Pagan Poetry, and the closer Unison with its slinking synth line. This seems to be a lot of people’s favourite Björk record and I get it, it just doesn’t keep me quite as hooked as some of her others
Cocoon is very pretty and instrumentally reminds me quite a bit of similar era Radiohead (specifically Treefingers from Kid A). Far from my most careful listen, but I certainly enjoyed this. Other standouts from my listen were Pagan Poetry, Sun in My Mouth (love the bells and harp work), and Heirloom (love the layers of synth at work here). Solid-to-high 4.
I think I definitely liked this freaky Bjork character more than her last album. It is certainly mega weird and most of the time left me strangely confused about what music is. But there were certain times where I was really getting down with the music. Other times where I was very ready for the album to be over. This is a very hard album to rate because I feel like it is either a 2 or a 4 and could be nothing else. But I think I definitely found myself liking it more than not so I will go 4. I am still very confused at this though
Immediate Portishead vibes. Man when trip hop is done well it SLAPS. Haven't really dug into Bjork's disco but really enjoyed the last one we had on here (divisive I know). Frosti is a fun song. Also the transitions on this are top notch. This is so fucking weird I love it. High 4.
Added to my library
4.5
I had heard her name, but not her music, so thoroughly enjoyed listening to the album and her beautiful voice!
Are we sometimes numb to the continued greatness of an artist? For me Vespertine is an album where, at this point in listening to her, Björk continues to be a stellar artist and performer but she's ceased to amaze me. To be clear, the flaw is here with my ear...with the way we take in information, demand novelty and define the terms of success for others in meeting it. Atmosphere, minimalism can be hard roads to turn on to at times for artists when so many hold their own expectations against them. Great record, but four stars because I'm numb and dumb.
This is the most on the nose Bjork at her most Bjork.
Fairy/ impish chaos... Finally not super annoyed at her voice because I listened the whole way through. Definitely want to listen to all her shit now. Easy 4.2
I always feel like I should listen to Björk more... atmospheric and beautiful.
Wow Just like with reading Ulysses, I’m going to need several relistens and cutlery to get to the bottom of this.
Incredibly beautiful and sexy. This album sounds like Radiohead chamber music. It’s so light, so subtly intricate. The first three tracks are probably the best, but the whole album is consistently interesting. Bjork pushes the boundaries in ways no has or can.
I really wanted to like this and then I did! I like her as a person but the first two songs it didn’t click. And then somewhere along the third song I got it. You just get transported
Another beautiful album, great production, unique almost alien sound
This album was a pleasant and interesting journey, I loved the production of it. Very unique sound.
I'm really torn whether to consider this album a gentle, elegant work of art with which Björk, in her naturally weird way, manages re-illuminate intimacy in an innocent yet sensitive light, or whether it's really just 12 pseudo-intellectual electro pop songs stuffed with euphemisms, puns and innuendos about intercourse. It might be both, which I find kind of impressive. To then call it “Vespertine” (something occurring in the evening) leaves me feeling both very clever and very fooled. Good job.
I liked this one a good bit more than I expected to. Nothing about the genre in general (or Bjork in particular) appeals to my musical tastes, but somehow this album just kind of works. It's full of melancholy, beautiful in places, and vulnerable.
This record was very interesting. Not really my type of music to listen to regularly but I really enjoyed this record. I didn't know what was going to happen next. I've heard a few other Bjork albums before, nothing really stood out too much. She's definitely unique. At least to me. She has very pretty lyrics. Almost like a tortured poet. Very cool. Hope more of her is on here.
I was taken on a musical journey. Maybe not one I would have wanted to go on normally, but a journey nevertheless.
3rd Bjork album on the list. And it's a third 4/5. She is very consistent, has her style, original style.
Funky Bjork
Another level
Rating: 8.5/10 Beautiful and experimental, first half is particularly strong.
Very strange, but strangely moving. I imagine this is just what Iceland sounds like.
It's intrinsically haunting yet beautiful. Almost post-rock-ish at times with its' distance from standard musical expectation. I can appreciate how much thought and effort were put into making this album in 2001, especially with how contrasting it is with Bjork's typical loud and overwhelming style
Interesting album, chill synths with her Bjork's wispy vocals all over. I like the concept, but it was a bit too long. Stand-out: It's Not Up To You
Great Bjork record. Can't say much more than that! 4/5
I prefer Post and Homogenic, but this still deserves to be part of Björk’s trilogy, really good stuff. B+

Af því að ég var með Bjarkarfordóma hef ég ekkert hlustað á plöturnar hennar en svo hlusta ég á þessa og hún kemur mér líka svona frábærlega á óvart. Mér fannst mjög gaman og ljúft að hlusta á þessa og set hana örugglega aftur á við tækifæri
Pretty good listen! I think I'm starting to get Bjork's style more so it's easier to connect with her music. I thought this album told some engaging stories and was some of the music of hers I have liked the most so far.
I had never listened to a full Björk album before and was absolutely blown away by this. Her vocals take a minute to get used to, but once I got used to them I was hooked in. The production on this is insanely well done.
I’ve never listened to a Björk album before so I didn’t know what to expect but I was very pleasantly surprised. It’s such an interesting sound, but the beats plus powerful, almost haunting vocals, made for a great listening experience. I really enjoyed the album.
Beautiful album.
Great, bit samey
I like the artist and this is a great record on first listen. Not familiar with it, but it feels like a culmination of her earlier work.
This isn't my favorite Bjork album, but like every Bjork album I've heard, it's great and singular and beautiful and weird 4/5
I've never been a fan. But maybe I should be? I liked this. It's weird. But not as weird as her normal stuff? Or maybe I was just in the right mood?
Best Song: Pagan Poetry. Understated in a way that feels like it can explode at any moment. A track beautifully full of tension. Worst Song: Frosti. The gentle, dollhouse style was actually quite pleasant, but a purely instrumental song simply cannot compete with Björk's otherworldly vocals. Overall: Flawless production, a cohesive auditory experience, all built upon Björk's unbelievable vocal ability. Each album of hers that I've come across seems independently revelatory. Her music feels endlessly thoughtful and creative. I may regret not giving this a full 5 stars, my only reasoning is that I wished she expanded and exploded her vocals like she's shown she is capable.
I could say the same thing about this album as I did for the last Bjork album we listened to. Surprised to see this before some of her better-known albums. Still great.
Hypnotic. Confident. Wonderfully dissident. Thoroughly enjoyed this music.
Never listened to Björk before. Soothing, ethereal. Reminds me of Zola Jesus. Not that they're necessarily that close, but if you r enjoy one, it's worth checking the other to change things up.
I enjoy this. 4/5
Better
bjonk
Ok
Gentle bjork
Softest bjork album.
I consider myself a Björk fan, but I must admit I had never listened to this album. Maybe it was because it came out when I was a dumb teenager, focused on sex, drugs and self destruction. In a way I’m glad I’ve discovered it as an adult. Such a beautiful record full of layers and texture.
I don’t know what that was, but it was interesting and moving and beautiful. Nice use of classical instruments/ xylophone solo
Bjork is such an amazing weirdo. I acquired "Medulla" (2004) by happenstance in high school, so that was my blueprint for her particular brand of ethereal, genre-defying music. However, "Vespertine" feels even more complex, innovative, and – sometimes – inaccessible. Although I can understand why this wouldn't be someone's cup of tea, it makes me want to come back to it and discover new layers.
bekannt.
Honestly very mixed reactions about this record. "Verspertine" by "Bjork" has been the crown jewel of many music enthusiasts and has been very highly recommended alike. Considering I had already listened to "Debut" , I expected much improvement from that record . Safe to say not what I had exoected and considering the hype , a bit low in quality. But that does not take away from the fact that it is good in its own right , just not at this time for me.
A hauntingly beautiful vocal odyssey
I was a major Bjorkist in college, but I dropped off before this one came out. It makes me sad because this is prime Bjork, at least as good as Post or Homogenic. A gorgeous marriage of her expressive voice and the bleepy bloopy production, with a modest sprinkling of strings. Beautiful.
I’ve always been fascinated by Björk. I listen to an album of hers every now and again, but I wouldn’t consider myself an active fan. I dig her whole vibe, though. And I enjoyed this a lot. Very beautiful music. Another instance where I’m thankful this project made me listen to an album.
alt bitch sent me a Spotify playlist bitch I’m from the hood do I look like I listen to bjonk
Bjork is someone I have never really dove in to, but just kind of always understood to be great and someone I would like. There were long stretches of this album that I was digging so much and the rest kind of just fit in the background so well. Really excellent album.
Absolutely lovely, arguably Bjork's best album. Rich, nuanced arrangements, gorgeous production. No flaws, although the back half drags a little toward the end. Fave Songs: Frosti, Aurora, Unison, Hidden Place, Cocoon, Undo, Pagan Poetry
Such a simple thing, a voice...yet at the same time it can be evocative, emotive, calming, and yet divisive. 55 minutes well spent. Just wonderful.
Björk always walks that line of being so weird that I want to stop listening, but also so weird that I can’t stop listening. This album in particular has some beautiful production decisions, but it’s not the kind of album I’d throw on again for casual listening.
maybe the most distinctly björk album she’s recorded, for better and for worse. the better is, of course, the precise production and the ethereal vibe of the entire project. the worse is how focused the album is on itself — i may be looking back unfairly, but it feels almost like a parody of itself. still objectively quite good, though.
3-4 Sterne.
Björk seems to create music on an existential plane of her own. Vespertine is hauntingly beautiful with its' combination of electronic glitches and harp.
There’s no one quite like Björk on the music scene … And whether you love or hate her, it’s probably for the better. Vespertine is minimalistic in an almost claustrophobic way. I absolutely adore the intimacy. Find me crying “Unison” on public transport near you.
Beautiful, ethereal, haunting soundscapes.
Enjoyable
I get what the fuss was about. Pretty amazing music with “unique” vocals
I think I would have REALLY liked this album if anyone other than Bjork was the singer. The music is fantastic... but her singing just doesn't work for me. Her delivery, timing, and tone is just so off. Still mostly enjoyed it though. 3.5 stars.
Amazing piece of work if you can get the time and peace to give it a real listen.
Last track is astonishingly beautiful
Bjork is someone i never got round to listening to, so was glad when it popped up. Intersting pop some of her lyrics and singing is quite dark but sung with such jollyness. It's her vocals though, she has a great voice and creates great imagery. The music is a bit bonkers but nothing wrong with that.
Lovely stuff. A bit of a weird choice compared to some of her other albums, but she does weird so wonderfully. I spent a happy afternoon LISTenINg to Björk. ####
i like bjork but mostly listen to individual songs rather than entire albums. vespertine is different, though. it’s beautiful, detailed, and intimate, and i appreciate that it’s cohesive. i’ve played it through twice now and it makes me want to be a winter fairy watching the snow fall in my ice palace.
Experimental, ethereal, meandering, creative and unique, this record is everything I imagined a Bjork album would be. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Hidden Place Date listened: 11/01/24
Obviously know Bjork but this was a new album to me and one I enjoyed through twice. She is a mad genius and it’s about of fun to hear her creativity. An influence on many many other musicians. This worked well for background atmospherics and it might just be the time of year but feels frosty, delicate but powerful.
3.5/5
weird and wonderful, 4 stars.
74/100
This is quite something. On the strange side and sometimes icy, but also full of moments of beauty. Layered production, varied sounds. If you can learn to love Bjork’s voice and get past the weird lyrics this is really strong. Best song: Unison
very unique and interesting sound
Felt like a experiencing an extreme depressive episode over and over....I loved it Björk has been a key musician in my teens so no wonder I enjoyed this. Not my favourite album but definitely would listen again
A soulful and personal album from Björk with her most unique batch of songs yet
It's Not up to You is good, dreamy stuff. Pagan Poetry one of the standouts. Love all the sparkly chimes and keys - short instrumental Frosti is beautiful. Sun in My Mouth and Heirloom also. Mix of cinematic soundscapes and tightly produced beats.
4.5
There’s no other artist quite like Björk-whether you consider this a positive or negative depends on you. On Vespertine she delivers a set of supremely bizarre but touching songs about human sexuality and the desire to feel connected.
I generally think of this album as the beginning of the also ran Bjork releases. That is both harsh and incorrect. Vespertine has wonderful and coherent stylistic choices and some pretty handy songwriting. It's no Debut, Post or Homogenic, but it is sure worth a listen.
4.5/5. The swan dress album, I wonder if it ever gets compared to Radiohead’s Kid A. Both records had a certain premonition of a forthcoming digitized world and it’s fully reflected in the sound.
This was really interesting and challenging to listen to, I don't think I know if I like it after the one listen. I appreciated it though.
Wasn’t sure if I’d like this but it’s a good album
4.5/5
I used to listen to Selmasongs often and had no idea she was working on another album at the same time. It has similarities to Selmasongs, exploring themes of simplicity but with a quieter more intimate tone.
Went back and listened to this while I was cooking. I've heard of how amazing Björk is for years but have never taken the dive to listen myself. Loved it.
Nice sound not the mist difficult Bjork to listen too.
Lots of satisfying clicks, pops, and interesting sound textures on this. The first track had me thinking there'd be loads more, so a little bit of a let down but still highly enjoyable.
mellow, quite easy to listen to. Aware of bjork but have not listened to a lot of the work but I did quite enjoy this one.
Dreamy and dramatic and mostly wonderful. “Hidden Place” and “Cocoon” and “It’s Not Up to You” and “Pagan Poetry” are all excellent. And the overall feel is one of elevation. Hard to argue with the quality of something so excellent.
How is it possible that you can hear a smile? That’s the magic of Bjork’s voice. This album sounds like it was made by someone in love. That’s worth a bonus star.
It took 4 tries, but I liked a Bjork record.
lovely chill electronic music with beautiful vocals. sleepy beautiful but not in a bad or boring way.
4.5
4/5. Beautiful and cold, it feels as though she is upset and disappointed. A cold winter alone is the aesthetic. Although some songs run a little long, overall this is a great album. Most likely won't run it often due to the length and sadness surrounding it.
Björk is great and this seems like a fine album. Nothing standing out to grab my attention like her earlier stuff but still a pleasant listen.
I can feel a spark of magic in this album. It reminds me of The Snow Queen. Lol, I've just realised that Bjork is from Iceland. Coincidence? I don't think so. I have a love-hate relationship with Vespertine. There is a lot of beauty in the album, but also there are some tracks which should be skipped.
I came to appreciate Björk as an artist several times already, but I never quite got to embrace her music. Maybe now I'll actually start listening to her. I absolutely love these shimmering, jingling sounds, but sometimes songs get dull anyway. It's not enough for 5, but I really enjoyed the whole album.
4. Björk is one of those artists I have to be in the mood for, but when I am I really enjoy the music.
I've had mixed feelings about Bjork's other albums but this one I quite enjoyed. It was delicate and interesting
Fuck yeah, Bjork. I love the chillout production. That’s my jams and lays a great foundation. And then add in Bjork. Powerful, raw, defiant. Visceral lyrics about family and relationships. They are simple, well-tread subjects; but the odd prism of Bjork’s word choice, emphasis, and singing make it feel raw and new. One thing that jumps out to me in listening is… the lyrics are often describing conventional gender roles: very relational, often hetero, sometimes sexual, submissive, all about the other; or maternal, focused on her son and motherhood, being part of a lineage of mothers. All true to life and rich subjects. But also all very conventional in their way. Nothing very counterculture in there. But the delivery is imbued with such powerful defiance. I associate that style and presentation with rebellion against tradition, and here.. If it’s defiant, I am not sure against whom. Intriguing. Fuck yeah, Bjork. Highlights: Cocoon, Heirloom
Beautiful
A couple songs were definitely a 4-5, but mostly I was neutral on this. The couple really good songs carried it. Her voice was pretty haunting- it made me wish it was raining
bjork is my tom waits? some people can't stand or don't "get" her, and i'm not sure i fully "get" her either, but I can't deny the emotional power of her music for me. she creates musical landscapes that are like impressionist paintings. brava!
fairy in the forest vibes, going around to my daisies and bluebells and checking out which lady bugs are where, the bees are gathering enough pollen but there may be something sinister afoot in the cave nearby
4/5 This was a tricky album to rate. The music and singing is so eclectic and weird it takes some getting used to. However, I feel like with a bit more listening it might be like next favourite album. There were some interesting lyrics that I really enjoyed and some explicit descriptions I really could have done without. The last song made the whole album for me. I have and will revisit this.
I probably need to listen to this a few times to really appreciate it but from one listen and a relatively open mind I liked it. The music being out of the ordinary kept me interested and her singing and lyrical style certainly mark her as unique but this kinda makes it music for certain moods only I think, and so not necessarily a positive... One to marinate much like "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" perhaps, and so given the same (pretty high) score.
Her music is beautiful, wonderfully mixed. I should listen to her more often. This one was very very good
Not my fav of hers, but Pagan Poetry and Hejrloom are just amazing.
So unique and powerful
Not so interesting, but very pleasant and well crafted
O remember I tried to get into Björk when I was young to no avail. I guess I just did not have the mind set at the time. I loved this record today tho! It’s quite amazing! Second chances come even 22 years after.
Art, brilliant, cool, delicate, exposing, fresh, great, heartfelt, icy, juicy, krazy, loopy, magnificent, noteworthy, opinionated, quiet, respected, strange, treasured, umbilical, vesperteeny, wise, xtc, yearning, zestful
Great sound palette. A musical journey.
The first track has me hooked. Hidden place has that 60 james bond vibe so good. Unison the final track is also great. The whole album in otherworldly from beginning to end.
I don’t know HOW I’ve slept on Björk this long. This was lovely. The soft synth + crackle sound on Cocoon is a sound I’ve heard in other Icelandic electronic like Múm, and it’s just one of the most beautiful sounds—I think it must remind me of something because, fuck, that song made me emotional! Anyway starring a few songs and making a note to absolutely fuck with more Björk
I wish I had started listening to bjork years ago, loved it 4.3/5
Why have I never listened to Bjork before this?! Really beautiful sound. Similar to Portishead in a lot of ways. I’ll have to listen to more of her discography. 4/5
Loved Post and Debut, but never really listened to much else from Bjork. This is different to them but still unmistakably her. A lot more electronic and even subtle at times, but never not interesting. It’s mad how popular this quirky, weird music was during a time where the charts were dominated by ultrapolished pop bands. She’s an absolute force. The production background is interesting on this one - she confined herself to only instruments that will still sound good when downloaded (crazy how far tech has come on since then ey?!). Shows though how talented she is. I think this is a belter, going for 4 but I reckon given a few more listens I’d be rating it up there with Post
Just an exceptional album from start to finish. No skips, is in the running for her best album overall. Seriously, I can't sing the album's praises enough. Yet for some reason, I have no idea how many more times I'll revisit it. I wouldn't be surprised if I never listened to it again. On the other hand, I could listen to it non-stop over the next few months, turn into an Icelandic Fairy Princess, deem this the greatest album of all-time, and I wouldn't be shocked at all. That'd be very in character for yours truly.
queeny
Before listening to this album, the only Bjork song I'd ever heard was "Hyperballad," thanks to 60 Songs That Explain the 90's. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to be in for, but I really enjoyed this album. The first half didn't really blow me away that much, but the second half more than made up for it. Even though I didn't enjoy the first half as much, I still thought that the album as a whole was incredibly pleasant to listen to. Bjork's vocals are outstanding, and her ability to arrange beautiful music is on full display here. I can't imagine what it must have been like for people to listen to this album when it came out. Personally, my head would have probably exploded. I imagine that Bjork's work probably influenced some other artists that I really liked: MGMT, Sigur Ros, and Miike Snow. And if she didn't influence them, don't tell me, and just let me believe the lie I invented.
It's not up to you - genel olarak beat'i güzeldi, arkadaki microbeatler de gayet başarılıydı. Overall : 8/10 <3
An enjoyable, intimate listen.
Great ambience music. Didn’t like it at first but it gre on me.
Pretty good
Ethereal chimes & Björk's beautifully weird voice. This album is much softer than her others, and some of these songs remind me of Icelandic lullabies. I hope we see more of her on this list.
I'm always going to appreciate the tranquil madness that is Bjork.
I definitely enjoyed this album more than I thought that I would. It was very interesting, but also accessible for me...not too avant-garde. After another listen or two, it may have bumped to a 5-star, but I'm just not sure
Beautiful stuff
A beautiful album
It was so…… ethereal. I recognized some songs in it. The songs were so detailed? Like layered and the beats sounded like little pops. Bjork voice is so unique but sometimes it feels like it goes against the beats and instruments.
Appreciate it more than the last time now that I have more music like it in my listening. Still not 5/5.
I always had a soft spot for Bjork, especially in high school and early college. It's been a while since I've listened to one of her albums straight through. It's a solid album but I definitely have to be in a specific mood now to listen to Bjork. This only has a couple of songs that would make my list of favorites but it's still a good one. Really beautiful vocals. Standout Tracks: Hidden Place, Cocoon, Undo, Sun In My Mouth, Unison
Vespertine reminds me so much of the artist Soap&Skin. I first heard Soap&Skin (specifically their tracks Sleep and Spiracle) during an immersive art exhibition for Pipilotti Rist, Pixel Forest. Pixel Forest is one of my most favorite art exhibitions I've seen to date, and Bjork's Vespertine evoked a similar intimate, melancholy, dreamlike ambiance to the music that actually played during the experience. It may not be something that I play on repeat, but it captures such a special, gentle, and meditative mood that I can easily see myself saving this album for a special-occasion listen like a bottle of good wine.
ethereal soft and full of bangers. best tracks: hidden place, pagan poetry, cocoon
I’ve tried to listen to Björk before. I always thought I’d like her because she is unique. Traditionally I feel like she is just “too weird” for me. But this album was palatable. I would absolutely listen again.
I like some of her other albums better, but this is still a good listen. It's quite lovely but feels more like a "I need to be in the mood for this" kind of album. Somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.
8/10, pretty cool, I wish I'd had better speakers to listen to it on.
"Modern chamber music" is right. Frequently lovely and often engrossing, this is her high watermark.Untroubled by genre expectations and free to do what she wants, Bjork explores the interior frontiers to powerful and moving effect. One finds it quite dramatic and emotionally intense, and admits to liking the record much more now than when it was released. It's perhaps a bit overdetermined (like much of her work), but she pulls it off and the instrumentation (clicky electro microbeats, harps, choirs) and studio soundscapes work better there than elsewhere in her catalogue. “Hidden Place” is good and the “Cocoon” makes one wonder what it would be like to be Matthew Barney for a day. “It’s Not Up to You” and “Pagan Poetry” are the highlights, and “Unison” a very strong end, after a bit of a lull on the previous few cuts. This is an artist creating her own genre so one finds it hard to figure a set of criteria to apply here.
Along with Medúlla, Björk at her absolute best. The attraction of Vespertine is the unexpected (for the time, and tome some degree even now) synthesis of organic and electronic. There's a warmth to the sound (not talking about the voice here – and, interestingly, I think this album showcases Björk's vocal range more effectively than any of her other albums.) I'm not, and I'll never be, a close parser of lyrics. but there is an edgy contentment that runs through this album. Sort of like, "I don't know how I got here, and I'm not sure that it's going to last, but I'll certainly enjoy the moment." Which is a lovely sentiment (assuming I'm not reading too much into the evidence, as it were.
She made good music after that one, but this was her last (and arguably her best) masterpiece. Immensely touching, with a deep, warm and detailed production that makes you go back to it and discover new things after each listen. Vulnicura wishes it was as intimate as this one.
Really great album, probably what Bjork has best to offer.
I was really surprise. Great album, nice vocal + electro music.
Wow! It is without a doubt one of Bjork's finest work. A kind of "gentle Kid A", out-of-this-world electro music accompanied with Bjork's emotional voice and lyrics. Beautiful!
Definitely interesting & different. Like it
Sequencia impressionante para se envolvido pelo triphop.
Really quite lovely. Lots of odd rhythmic experimentation on a John Cage/Aphex Twin kind of vibe. Her voice is more varied than ever. It is a tiny bit muddy at times, but otherwise very lovely.
Always like Bjork records when I put them on. I just don’t put them on often.
Bjork is really on the cutting edge here - this album is unusual, experimental, and understated. I personally prefer the raw emotion of Homogenic but there is no question in my mind that this is an excellent album, deserving of being on this list.
Really liked it. Calm syncopated sounds.
I fell in love with Björk in the late 80's and bought her first three solo albums after the Sugarcubes disbanded, but never really listened to anything after that. I really like this album and Love her voice. Can't wait for more Björk, I'm sure it's coming!
Really intriguing and interesting sonically, and Bjork's strange ebb and flow cadence always fascinates me. I appreciate the sparse-ness of the album, not overloading the senses. Bjork always does something intentionally different which I've always liked. I need to get me one of them goose dresses. Heirloom was a standout track for me. Kinda difficult to give a rating to a Bjork album first listen.
Really good. The vocals are great, and it's very pleasant to listen to. But I'm missing a little edge here and there. Maybe I need to listen a few more times to really appreciate this.
Interesting
She's a lot more musical than SNL celebrity jeopardy would have me believe 4
I've been meaning to get into Björk and even had this album saved already so great excuse to start. She's got a new record coming out soon, too! UPDATE: This was a beautiful album. Very subtle and finely textured. The closing track was especially gorgeous. I'm curious to go back and listen to her work leading up to this and would be interested in a louder, bolder version of her sound.
4.5
Unfassbare Stimme und dichte Atmosphäre. Teilweise sehr experimenteller Sound. Gerne mehr davon!
Not my favourite Bjork album, but her stuff is always enjoyable and fascinating. 4/5
Solid album quite enjoyed it from start to finish
Fascinating stuff though I connect with a lot of these songs on a cerebral level rather than emotionally. But this is only my first time listening and this is so the kind of album that you need to hear a bunch of times before you fully “get it.” The strings on “It’s Not Up to You” add a layer of whimsy that I associate with some of Björk’s music. It’s like she spiked the song with an old movie score. “Undo” is one I can groove to. There’s a skittering, glitchy beat that you can dance to (living room dancing, not club dancing). Ooh her vocals on “Pagan Poetry” get pretty raw. I think it’s awesome that she gives herself the space to explore on these songs. There must have been a lot of interesting vocal takes to choose from for any of these tracks. Her performances feel very immediate and of the moment. Makes me want to watch some live videos of her. Incredible that Björk is the lead producer on most of these songs. They’re really complex and filled with interesting details. (The warped bass sound on “An Echo a Stain” is what made me check the producer credits - it’s a great effect.) And to think all these reactions are just to the music. I didn’t pay much attention to the lyrics on this first listen but given the emotional intensity of her vocals, it’s clear that the subject matter is worth paying attention to as well. Highlights: “Hidden Place,” “It’s Not Up to You,” “Undo,” “Unison” (a playful but also epic closer!)
At times beautiful, unique, haunting, and weird. I really enjoyed it. Lots of thought and care were put into these tracks, and I think in it Bjork shows that she is an evocative singer with a provocative persona that unfortunately at times takes attention away from her music. There's so much going on behind her voice (which herself is an attention-grabber) that I think it warrants multiple listens and I'm excited to add some of these tracks to some of my more-listened-to playlists.
Love Bjork, somehow hadn't really listened to this before, loved it too.
Honestly, Björk can do no wrong imo. This is hauntingly beautiful.
It's easy to make the mistake of over-attributing Vespertine to Matmos. From the sound of it, Björk built most of the edifice, and it shows. The most danceable bits are insanely abstract, and they fade in and out to the other instruments. Vespertine sends the listener on a journey. Something about the eccentricity of Debut simply can't be matched, but this is fine, fine, fine as well.
A bit background-y, which makes it easy to drift out while writing reports but good stuff. A few years ago my sister gave us Xmas presents of a gift vouchers for some VR place in East London and we did the Vulnicura VR thing and it was mental. I couldn't stop laughing at how good Stonemilker, the first track was, with Bjork singing right in my face on a deserted beach on Iceland. https://hypebeast.com/2015/6/bjork-unveils-virtual-reality-video-for-stonemilker
This was better than I expected, I'm pleasantly surprised that I could enjoy this album as much as I did. Going into this I already liked the song hyperballad from her other stuff but that was the extent of my bjork knowledge. It felt very magical and fairylike and very unique.
Me encantó.
I've had a fascination with Bjork ever since she showed up on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. This is a lovely album full of haunting melodies and complexly layered compositions. I want to marry Bjork and live in her weird Icelandic castle and wear bizarre clothing with her.
It's something I have to be in the mood for but it is beautiful music.
Enjoyed this! 4.1⭐
I love Bjork, vocals, production...everything is great. However for mě it lacked the emotional value needed to be 5. Maybe one day.
Another really solid entry from Iceland's crown jewel. This album is a lot more accessible than some of Bjork's other work. There are a lot of beautiful string arrangements mixed with electronic elements. Counterbalancing these grand pieces are a lot of very minimalist moments, which works quite well. All of these are tied together with Bjork's unique voice and lyricism. Fav Tracks: Cocoon, Pagan Poetry, Heirloom
Twee might in the twilight.
bjrötica, not bjömbast
The turning point between Bjork's earlier 'fun' material and becoming more experimental. This is very good and requires multiple listens to unlock all aspects of the songs.

10/10
With “Vespertine”, Bjork pulled a “Kid A” after scoring an “OK Computer” with 1997’s “Homogenic”. Like “Kid A”, “Vespertine” marks a sharp left field turn to something a little more abstract and introspective. It’s also denser, more complex and perhaps more rewarding than its predecessor. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it at first, but the first thing to know about “Vespertine” is that it’s a treasure trove of arrangements and production, so intricately woven together. Knowing Bjork recorded “microbeats” with a series of household objects (crushing ice! Shuffling cards!) and then used music program Sibelius to write up all the string, harp and music box parts puts it even further up my street. Right from the get go with “Hidden Place”, “Vespertine” is elegant and rich. The combination of beats, Bjork’s acrobatic vocals and especially the lush choir and strings makes for a gorgeous sound. “Cocoon” is also beautiful, and almost uncomfortably intimate: “when I wake up, gorgeousness- he’s still inside me”, followed up by some veeery heavy breathing. Of the remaining tracks, the most breathtaking are “Pagan Poetry” and closer “Unison”. The brief instrumental “Frosti” deserves a mention, and the only discernible traces of the earlier, danceable Bjork are “It’s Not Up To You” and “Heirloom”. The rest is still working its charm on me, slowly but surely… but at the very least, it’s intriguing. I have enough confidence in Bjork’s genius to know this is at least a four star and will only improve with time.
Solidne 4
Layered, complex, unique, difficult at times, I can see repeated listens bearing multiple, complex tasting fruits. The opposite of background music this album demands attention. We will see if the rewards are worth the effort of this listener. To be continued. 3.75 🌟
i like this bjork
Loved this. Some of her best vocal performances, beautiful production.
No words can describe how beautiful this album is. Flawlessly written, produced, orchestrated, and mastered album. There's tremendous songwriting over the entire album. And it's sounds so minimal while atmosphere is so magical and ethereal. Multi-tracked harmonies elevate that atmosphere splendidly. Most favourite tracks from the album: Cocoon It's Not Up to You Undo Aurora Sun in My Mouth Unison 9/10
My only exposure to Bjork before this was her alt-rock band The Sugarcubes, "Birthday" is one of my favorite songs. And I'm happy to hear her vocal style in still here 13 years later. Dramatic and beautiful, before in the Sugarcubes it gave off a wistful and mysterious vibe, but here we have something much more stunning, carefully arranged with intricate electronics that serve to construct an ambiance for the audience and support Bjork's vocal style and lyrical subject matter. I can tell how inaccessible this could be for most listeners. I mean, the second track "Cocoon" is characterized by moments of silence, light ambiance effects, and a mostly static whisper that rarely breaches its boundaries. This is an aesthetic that contrasts with most pop music out there. For many people, this abstract aesthetic combined with the cryptic lyrics could come off as pretentious. However, her one-line lyrics project brief images that build the subject matter, allowing the audience plenty of time to focus on everything going on, from Bjork's storytelling to her emotions to the production's environment. Major issue is that the second half is significantly weaker than the first. Not bad by any means, but they don't blow me away until the closer "Unison." There are many things I love about those tracks though. "Frosti" leading into "Aurora" sparks images of mythical ice kingdoms. "An Echo a Stain" is a fest of industrial anxiety. "Sun in My Mouth" has some of her prettiest singing. "Heirloom" is straight up trip hop, probably the most accessible, even her vocals are more traditional here. I have nothing notable to say about "Harm of Will," just another decent track, but at this point I'm tuning out until "Unison" snaps me back into a dramatic operatic finish. Favorites: It's Not Up To You, Pagan Poetry, Unison
Björk’s work is always clearly and uniquely Björk, but beyond the vocals and the off-kilter experimentalism it has actually evolved a lot over the years. Since I had listened but never written reviews as we encountered her albums, I’m now going back and re-listening with more of an interest in trying to make sense of the variety. “Debut,” her… debut, was backed by rather bland and unchallenging electronica. But that was no longer the case by the time of “Vespertine.” The arrangements are sparser, swelling and fading, building tension and emotion. The harps and tinkling percussion found in parts of “Debut” are still here, but the violins and strings that were so prominent on “Vulnicura” had not arrived yet.
Enjoyed listening but it was exhausting, very Jazzy and lacking in structure.
Björk is always weird. This is her being weird and in love. Fillerish songs make way for the epic repose of the scattered three or four single worthy exceptions. Still. It’s an interesting and musically dense piece of art pop.
Got into it after a few tracks. Not bad
Well, this album is all about sex, baybee. It lacks the variety of earlier albums but maybe it's better for that.
Starting with "Hidden Place" it seems to pick up where her previous album, "Homogenic," left off, but then "Cocoon" takes the album in a more intimate direction. Definitely lends itself to headphones. Really like the textured beats, especially as they mesh with the string and vocal arrangements.
Strong interesting start. This coming off Homogenic is interesting, it feels like it could have been released in the last year. Love that instrumental oddness going on. First track has it all, orchestral Björk, weird beat Björk, instrumental oddities swirling around Björk, etc etc. Second track has some nice little poppy-sounding-beats along with interesting acoustic touches, lyrically it's interestingly explicit but pure in its intention. Oh man the Bass contrasting with the music boxes on Pagan Poetry is so fucking good, the push-pull of heavy/raw/powerful instruments with delicate twinkling of other touches+vocals is very powerful and what makes me really like Björk. This is definitely a winter album. Interesting Wiki tidbit: "With the rising popularity of Napster and music downloads, she decided to use instruments whose sounds would not be compromised when downloaded and played on a computer, including the harp, the celesta, clavichord, strings, and custom music boxes. Assisted by the duo Matmos, Björk created "microbeats" from various household sounds, such as that of shuffling cards and ice being cracked." Honestly there is a lot of interesting found-sound tidbits in the Wiki article that for a nerd like me make me happy. Sounds like the laptop was the studio for most of it, and apparently Björk does not get the credit for her work on it. Bummer. I'd say maybe a 4.5 or 5 but I will go with a 4.5 since not every track was unique enough to grab me compared to some others.
i really loved just relaxing and letting this wash over me and i think it might be 5 stars if i listened to it a few more times! ive never listened to a bjork album before but now im definitely intrigued
I enjoy this album and it's so soothing to listen to. Her other albums are even better, though.
I like a bit of Björk, but wasn't really familiar with this album. I'm also a fan of that early oughties faux-vinyl-crackle glitchy electronica, so this was right up my street! Fave track - "Hidden Place", maybe - loved the harp on "Pagan Poetry" too....
Need to listen to more bjork. Reminds me a lot of radiohead
Not as to my taste as yhe albums that came before, but still i love her sound
Perfect
Time has mellowed me, I suppose; I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I don’t think it’ll be a regular repeat listen for me, but it’s pretty good
As I am listing now I am remembering why this album doesn't rank higher for me. Musically - it's a brilliant & extremely complex album - that is apparent. It definitely isn't as easy to just put on and enjoy as Debut or Post. I think it's clear that she was in a certain headspace after doing *Dancer in the Dark* and Vespertine stays a bit more somber and subdued and doesn't reach the more manic highs of the previous 3 releases - and that's what I always loved most about Bjork.
More subdued than most of her work in a way that complements it well. I tend to overlook this album compared to her more bombastic ones but I'm really appreciating her work crafting the beats and melodies here.
She is goddess
Beautiful album
Good bjork album as usual
Enjoy Bjork, maybe wouldn't listen regularly but every time I do I enjoy. 3.8
De moeite waard om naar te luisteren. Zeker voor 2001 klinkt dit heel modern
I really love Bjork, and her song It's not up to you actually hit me in an emotional way that I needed.
Absolutely Fantastic
byorck
Its what you expect from a Bjork Álbum, ambient, uniform and great
Loved it's Not Up to You and Pagan Poetry
Very nice, weird Bjork music album.
This album had a very interesting sound. Lo-fi mixed with epic orchestral. Lyrics were ok.
Loved it
Absolute weirdo
I liked it.
Yuhu
Clearly one of auroras influences, and I completely get down with it. Industrial dream pop is most certainly it
At first I hated this... but as the Bjork set in I kind of started to like it. It's like being in a kind of depressing ice palace. I can't imagine singling out a song (besides Frosti which I love) but I found myself nodding along and getting into it in the second half.
Tripppppy!
Powerful and ethereal, but better in small doses. Not so much for playing in the background while working lol
Pure magic. Such a treat. Mesmerizing.
This album is pretty sick. Ethereal, unique, and much more than a unique voice with an accent you can't quite place.
That audio mix... Very unique... I must deep dive into that music.
This sounds like it could have come out last week. Bjork was truly revolutionary. Fun listen.
freaky. really cool, enjoyed uqite a bit
1. Opening track is great. Her vocals sound so enticing and then break into a childlike taunt. 2. Second track is sooo breathy. Combined with that drum machine with the suppression it's super haunting 3.
Much less “weird” than I previously thought. Reminiscent of Massive Attack and lo-fi. For the first time I feel like I “get” and like Bjork.
Weird but good stuff. More like 4.5, will definitely listen to this again
Made me think of the calmer Chris Christodoulou songs, but with added intresting vocals.
Mysterious sound! I like it. Will definitely listen to her other albums.
Fucking amazing, this artist knows full well what she wants and does it wonderfully
Have not listened to this before, quite like it. Sprechgesang, but with nice melody.
She's a genius.
Ambitious Instrumentation and arrangements that are interesting but it took getting past the first 2 tracks before it felt like anything was working. I applaud her risk, but often her vocal arrangements and performances don't work for me. This goes for most of her career. In my opinion, there way, WAY too many Björk albums on this list. DEBUT is really the only one that deserves to be here, with maybe one additional album, and to be fair, after experiencing most of her other albums, VESPERTINE might me the most deserving after DEBUT. The album grew on me slowly, but the concept album really explodes with orgasmic delight on "Unison". Favorites: "It's Not Up to You", "Undo", "Pagan Poetry", "Unison"
Björk is a real vibe. I can tell that this would really hit in just the right mood
Screaming. Why is it always screaming
Correcto
Admission: I’m officially a Bjork fan. There was something about this album that grabbed me. It was like Bjork birthed this album from a binge night with Radiohead “Hail-to-the-Thief” era. …and it finally explains the whole Goose-outfit thing that made so much controversy years ago. Her voice is less cutting and Yoko-Ono than normal. An Echo A Stain was definitely Radiohead-inspired. I also appreciated the Dead Can Dance influence of Pagan Poetry. But the key tracks for me was Hidden Places, which set the stage for the oddity to come. Ty’s is not a night club album. This is a headphones and mediation album. Yeah, this is a return for me.
3.5
No doubt she’s an innovator.
Mysterious and quirky. I like it in the same way I like negroni, quite occasionally and in small doses
Bjork is always good, but I prefer her more beat driven songs. This album is lovely, but too swoony for me.
Liked the not run-of-the mill effort and the creativity. Won't come back but I can apreciate the artist.
A very welcome change from the usual type of music on this list
I really enjoy Björk, this isn't my favorite album of hers, still a fine thing.
could be 4 star, was lowk much better than expected. I think I get Bjork now, I feel like a lesbian alternative woman
5/10
A solid 3/5. I'm a big Massive Attack fan and originally expected more of that classic 90s trip-hop vibe from Björk here. The electronic micro-beats were a bit too fragile for my personal taste, but the production is undeniably great. Not every song was for me, but I still found 3 or 4 really good tracks that I saved for my playlist
183. its not up to youuuuuuuu
There’s a lot in interesting things happening here musically. Bjork is really talented, no doubt. Her singing style wears me out over the course of a whole album though.
If Debut was way too restricted, this is way too weird. 3/5
Again, Bjork is in her own genre of music. Was surprised to see another one of her albums so soon after the first one on this list. But, liked this one a bit more. More electronic pop than experimental, and her voice is stronger providing a nice counter to the electro atmosphere she creates. Highlights: "It's Not Up To You" and "Pagan Poetry"
