This is a really fun album and I've appreciated listening to it, the Honorable mention list realistically could have the entirety of the album on it minus the hits. 4/5*

Very fun pop-rock, reminds me of Roxette and the like, but there are too many filler songs to really make this album a banger.

This is a good album...classic 80s sound. Ok course the hits "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got The Beat" lead the charge here but the rest of the songs are respectable as well.

Liked this more than I thought I would

A super impressive debut album with a few all time classics, which are still my favorites after listening to the full album (our lips are sealed and we got the beat). The consistent sound is not bad per se, but leads to some tracks blending in with others. Some of the lyrics I was just not vibing with, but the album is hard carried by the upbeat and energetic sound they carry throughout. Album cover is pretty fire, and it’s a great album name.

Maken dames ook wel eens jarentachtigjengelplaten? Deze komt een eind in de richting. In ieder geval is de opname ijl en lijkt de muziek nogal op het werk van tijdgenoten. Je zet de plaat op en denkt dat je So long van Fisher Z te horen krijgt. Het is allemaal niet bijzonder goed, maar nog wel aan te horen.

En ik maar denken dat het recht op foute verbasteringen van filmtitels was voorbehouden aan een bepaald soort films....Vooruit, het draait om de muziek. De dames hebben elkaar leren kennen tijdens punk-concerten, lees ik. Ze besloten zonder ervaring zelf muziek te maken. Zetten zij zich daarmee af tegen de punk? Want daar waar de punkers soms goede muzikanten zo slecht mogelijk muziek willen laten overkomen, leerden zij zichzelf de instrumenten te bespelen en komen de dames met nummers als Lust to Love en This Town met uitgedachte pop-muziek. Het levert geen enorme knallers op, maar het luistert allemaal makkelijk weg.

Veertig jaar oude punkrock van een stel dames, waarvan Belinda Carlisle later nog bekend(er) is geworden met wat van die aanstellerige jaren 80 ballads. Muzikaal gezien zit het allemaal niet zo ingewikkeld in elkaar: 4 akkoorden en vrijwel in elk nummer dezelfde rakketakdrum. Maar op zich is dat niet erg, want dat is soms het hele idee van lekkere muziek: lekker tempo erin en hopsakee gaan met die banaan. De galmende bas/gitaar geeft soms het idee van surf-muziek. Er zit ook best nog wel wat afwisseling in zelfs, want soms wordt het tempo iets omlaag geschroefd, zonder dat het ineens een tergend trage ballad wordt. Leuk om dit te ontdekken, want ik had nog nooit van the Go-Go's gehoord. Ik heb me hier prima mee vermaakt, we gooien er gewoon een vrolijke 4 sterretjes tegenaan.

I had previously only heard the hits from this album. I’m very impressed by the album as a whole. In fact, I think the hits are some of the weaker songs. Tracks like “How Much More” and “Lust To Love” are way stronger. I can also see how this influenced bands that would come later like La Luz.

I am finding it so hard to rate these albums. I’ll be jamming out to some songs and then be completely disinterested in others. Really liked We Got The Beat, Can’t Stop The World, and Skidmarks On My Heart.

High-energy, kick-butt new wave and pop punk album from the Go-Go’s. The all-female band brings an overall tough sound with crunchy guitar, agile and punchy bass, and pounding anthemic drums, but the keys and chorus vocals shine with pure 80’s pop. This is a really fun album, and certainly paved the way for future punk offerings. Stand out tracks include “Our Lips Are Sealed”, “How Much More”, “Fading Fast”, “Skidmarks On My Heart”, and “Can’t Stop The World”.

Beauty And The Beat by the go-go’s is a pop album with good moments but can become incredibly boring. the influence of this album in modern pop is clear and this band set the way for female pop stars but the album has little memorable moments. the opening song is the best of the album by far and is also the most popular. the album overall is very forgettable despite its influence

This album really surprised me with its depth, musicianship, various themes, and incorporating different styles while still maintaining an overarching consistency and sound. It was fun at times and serious at times in the best ways. It really hit its stride with the tracks Automatic and Fading Fast where it branches from the new wave punk pop sound in to something more ominous. Then there are the obvious hit singles that float the album and make it fun (we got the beat, our lips are sealed). They surprisingly hold up pretty well. The bass playing is particularly impressive.

It feels like this entire album has no bass sound - everything from the voices to guitar to the drums is in a narrow high frequency band, it makes the songs not sound very ‘full’

Certainly well-executed 80s pop. Complete with catchy hooks and dance beats. The hits are timeless, and the rest is filler.

Really fun!

This album has a fun, punk, teenager feel. While this is not really my style, I liked the drums and occasionally riff through the album. I did not love the style of singing, however. I felt it sounded whiny and a little too high pitched. It was still a fun listen though, and would be an album I would recommend for a dance or a party with an 80s theme.

Fine for a bit but wears pretty thin even in a run time just over half an hour long. Needs more ideas.

Pretty classic stuff here, new-wavey, power-pop goodness. The hits are familiar enough without being as over saturated as some other stuff from this era—especially “Our Lips Are Sealed” which shamefully I always knew but wasn’t able to place until listening here. But everything beyond the singles is great as well, fantastic bass and rhythm works, the leads are solid, great vocals, this is classic and rightfully so!

The overall feeling of the album does not allow you to feel bad for one second. I loved the fact that it's an all girl group and was extremely upbeat about typical girls being girls. Some pretty cool harmonies throughout, and while it wasn't overly deep lyrically, the happy vibe made up for it. I could really see this being a favorite album of mine if I grew up in the time it was released. Really had me thinking, "You go, girls!"

There are some classics on here. Didn't even know this existed. I should listen to more.

Considering that this is their debut album, it is very strong. Loved the vibe, post-punk mixed with new wave. 3/5. Favourite song(s): "How Much More", "Tonite".

Much more substance than one recalls, plus cute and fun. One supposes the only he punk part is that they didn't know how to play their instruments when they started. It's the pure pop crispness that makes it work. The '50s, girl-group vibe comes thru even clearer all these years later, thought one recalls noticing in real time. Is it slight? Yes, of course, almost by design. But, as with all the best-made pop, it's just hard not to like and almost perfectly infectious.

I enjoyed this one a lot, although I am partial to The Go-Go's and Belinda Carlisle's voice. I would say my only real complaint is that I wish there was a few good power ballads, because Belinda's voice is so amazing and she needs a chance to show it off. This made me want to dance in my chair at my desk though!

Yeah, this is good. Jangly, sunshine-y, proto-Sleater-Kinney, proto-Plumtree power pop. Crazy how the two big singles are the worst songs on here though.

Fun 80's pop music, that I would listen to again.

I wish the vocals on this were mastered a little cleaner. I felt like the muted vocals took away from the songs, even though it made the solid instrumentals more pronounced.

Much better than I feared. I was familiar with "We Got The Beat" as I used to play that back in the day, but I never explored this album any deeper. I'm glad I did. It's not exactly a beacon of substance but as is often the case with me, I was turned off by the radio tracks and never delved deeper. This album is worth a full listen IMO. 4 stars.

A really bad experience for me. It makes me think a group of Taylor Swift minded teenage girls decided to form a band. The problem is, their voices sound even more immature than some of their lyrics. I tried to play a game called Genshin Impact, but couldn’t get past a sidekick fairy called Paimon, and her atrociously annoying voice. This band sounds like a group of Paimon’s decided to form a band. Unfortunately, because of the nature of this album challenges, I am completing every album I listen to. I wasn’t able to stop at Paimon’s voice. The musicians are pretty good though. The songs just don’t seem to be well written to me. Taylor got 2 stars with her 1989 album from me because everything about the album was pretty good, just a little lifeless in the themes for me, as I can’t connect to them. Beauty and The Beat was everything I disliked about 1989, and less. I feel like Taylor deserves more than two stars after hearing this album, and it doesn’t seem fair to have her album be a consecutive number of stars next to The Go-Gos 1 star.

Entertaining and fun

I was surprised by this. I didn't expect to like that it at all but I didn't hate it. I'm not about to run out and buy all the Go-Go's albums I can or anything but I would be willing to listen to more. 3 stars is where I'm at.

Middle of the road, nothing bad, nothing standing out as particularly good. I hear little reason to put it on again, but I wouldn't be opposed to it at all. A nice time-capsule.

I'm generally not a fan of 80's music but this was...pretty OK? Also fun since they have a song titled "Skidmarks On My Heart" and I don't think of tires when I hear "skidmarks." Also I'm 12 years old. Anyway, I liked this more than I thought I would, but not enough to ever listen to it again.

I enjoyed this album much more than I expected. We've Got the Beat was so far out of my wheelhouse that I never bothered trying anything else. I can't say I will ever listen to this again, but I am glad that I can.

A cool breeze on a hot day. A refreshing dip in the pool. A tall glass of iced tea. In a word, a bop! The cheerful energetic tonic we all needed in 1981. Loved it then love it now. No bad mood can survive "We Got The Beat".

Liked the riffage, First song reminded me of I don't live here anymore by War On Drugs. Just the little lick.

Beauty and the Beat I really love this little genre, that early 80s jangly post punk, new wave, power pop sweet spot - people like The Feelies, The Romantics, The Bangles, The Cars etc. I love the harmonies on this, the melodies aren’t always top notch but the energy and vibe more than makes up for it. I love the up tempo and slightly loose, imperfect playing. That punk, do it yourself simplicity and energy in tandem with the 60s Byrds/Beatles/Who style pop melodies, harmonies and hooks - for me that is a delicious combination. We Got the Beat is an absolute banger. Our Lips are Sealed, Lust to Love, Automatic, You Can’t Walk in Your Sleep, Skidmarks on my Heart are my other highlights. It’s not a perfect album, there are some dips here and there, but at 35 minutes it flies by and is such a fun, energetic, infectious, joyous listen that you soon forget about the lulls. Not top tier but an absolute solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Catchy pop album, sounds great!

This album reminded me of a later female group from the USSR, Kombinatsiya. It seems to me that they were inspired by Go Go's. Overall, the album is fun, fresh, light, but I didn't really like the sound quality and performance.

An absolute perfect post-punk / new wave album from a band that ended up becoming a superstar pop group. This Go-Go’s album is one I pull out and listen to AT LEAST once a year, if not more.

Hmm - there are better new wave bands. I don't like the voices too much. Three stars - mostly because of the beat ;-)

Het feit dat het uit de jaren '80 komt in combinatie met de hoes zorgde voor lichte angst en tegenzin, maar dit valt me 100% mee. Een beetje een surfpop en poppunk-huismerk Blondie met een extra laagje suiker. The Beach Boys met een vagina. Vroeger zou je dat The Beach Girls noemen, maar tegenwoordig is dat een te vlugge aanname. Daarbij een flinke scheut The Bangles, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Wilde, noem ze maar op. Siouxsie and the Banshees zonder het gekef. Tuurlijk hoor je dat het niet uit 2023 komt, maar het is niet storend gedateerd. En aangezien het een '80s plaat is, is dat pure winst. Pak je er een grote kaart met muziekstijlen bij dan ligt dit niet heel ver van wat ik normaal gesproken vrijwillig luister. Met name de surf-achtige gitaarlijntjes vind ik lekker. Bloedt een heel klein beetje dood richting het einde, ook al is het maar 35 minuten totaal. 5 sterren vind ik te overdreven, maar ik vind dit wel een prettige manier om deze week te beginnen.

This is a pretty fun album with some iconic tracks on it. Musically, it doesn't do a whole lot for me. Pop music can only retain my attention for so long, but this album certainly doesn't take itself too seriously and has an appropriate runtime for what it is. Favorite track: We Got the Beat

BL: never heard of “The Go-Go’s” before. I like the album cover a lot though. However this will be a complete blind listen through. AL: highly worth the listen. A sleek, well produced, pop record. Digging into the past of The Go Go’s their punk past becomes apparent with the structuring and length of a lot of the tracks on this album. However this punk gone pop (not associated with pop-punk) approach really works well here and makes it stand out from a lot of other stuff on the market. Very fun. Surprisingly, and I have no idea why, I never listened to this in its entirety even tho I was prime target age when it came out. I remember listening to it on cassette on my friends pink "boom box" stereo and we thought we were so cool that she had it. Anyway - it was great to listen to and remind myself to put it into context of the time and what they were doing as women in a male dominated world of music. 3.5/5

I was in a really bad mood when I started this one and when it was over I was in lass a bad mood. New wave is not normally my jam but this actually made me feel better. So I'm giving it high marks.

Generic pop album, unoriginal sound, don't really see the appeal of any of these songs. I do enjoy the instrumentals. 1/5

Wow! I loved this so much! What a great album - I had heard 'Our lips are sealed' but never listened to any other music by The Go-Go's - I've been missing out all these years! This was fun and full of early female punk rock power - so good Fave track: Lust to love

Phenomenal record. Group member Chris wrote an article a while back about how We Got The Beat would be a smash if it were written exactly as-is this decade, and I feel this praise can be extended to the record as a whole. The energy and attitude is so clearly an influence on so many talented contemporary artists I love and respect. It shouldn’t go unmentioned how talented these women are as instrumentalists and performers. I feel the real standouts on the record though are Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Coffey on guitar, not just for their electric performances but also their incredible songwriting which dominates this record. I didn’t expect to enjoy this at all, but it was fun! There was a punk-ish edge that surprised me. Still a little poppier than I prefer, but I think it goes in the 3.5~4 range.

I always felt the Go-Gos were a second rate B52s. Still bubblegum annoyance but with less catchy tunes. Here in the UK the FunBoy 3 did the opening track more effectively. I wish these women had their lips sealed. I was right. Absolutely not one of the 1,001 albums I needed to listen to before I die. Though , as the album develops, there are hints at a sub-par Levellers/REM. That folk/indie undercurrent but I just can’t get beyond the cheesy vocals. I don’t recall Belinda Carlisle’s solo career sounding so grating but, yes, I didn’t like Jane Weidlin’s Rush Hour.

There is a wholesomeness to the poppy sound of the Go-Go's in 1981. This is of a time before the copious amounts of cocaine, infighting and plastic surgery overtook their lives. Great songs, good music.

Wow! A perfect album! We got the beat is right! I was blown away by this album, mostly because I only have heard the two singles that were played around the clock. I still remember the band driving around singing “Our lips are sealed” on MTV, it’s planted in brain. I’ve also always liked Belinda Carlisle voice. But this album surprised me with their punk roots, yet more polished. And they created this debut album with no outside help. All songs great but a few standouts for me: How Much More, Tonite, Lust to Love, Fading Fast and Automatic, which was just incredible. It would have been amazing to see them play live when this album was released! Such energy.

It’s Belinda! Post-punky pop. Some great choruses and bass lines in particular. LA surf rock moments. Occasionally sound like REM, especially the last song. Enjoyable.

It was alright. Pretty basic pop album and probably only made the list because of Our Lips are Sealed which is definitely iconic so I will give it that.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. I came in with low expectations for an all-girl band from the 1980s. The only song I recognized was "We got the Beat", which was coincidentally my least favorite. Unlike most 80s music, they actually used a real drummer instead of a drum machine which is nice. Although this is pop music, there are hints of punk that I appreciated.

My first intro to The Go-Go's, they have a special place in music history. Learning about their place in new wave speak volumes to their influence! Favorite track: Skidmarks On My Heart

A solid carrier of the fun and personal side of punk at an ebbing moment guy for the genre in the 80s. Sounds almost as much like surf or the B-52s at times as it does the Ramones. Good songwriting, very good vocals (nice harmony work) and solid playing throughout -- especially Gina Schock on drums and Kathy Valentine on bass, providing the heart and backbone of this band. Not an album that blew me away, but certainly one that I enjoyed and one that I'm sure got plenty of kids -- especially girls -- starting bands of their own. That's a legacy worth honoring with a listen. Standout tracks are the singles (Our Lips Are Sealed and the evergreen We Got The Beat) and Can't Stop The World. The Go-Go's might not become your favourite band but don't skip this one!

Great new wave vibe. Extremely consistent with great melodies. Some great bass lines and the instrumentation was good in general. Perfect middle ground between grit and polish.

A really good album by the Go-Go's. It's a real feel good record. Surf rock pop is probably the best way to describe it. The vocals are great, the instrumentals are great. Not a legendary album but one that's really good. Favorite songs: We got the beat Our lips are sealed

A couple of excellent tracks, the rest were fairly average. As with a lot of previous reviews, this really isn't my preferred genre. My rating system governs that this should be 2 or 3 stars. Let's go with 3 because I knocked one out over a picture of Belinda Carlisle many years ago.

1981. I looooove the Go Gos. I remember singing their songs. Takes me back in time. Fun. Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got The Beat are songs I remember with fondness.

Not really my cup of tea. We got the beat is the best song off the album but it is not something I'd try to listen to.

Never listened to them before. Great album, will def keep it in rotation. 5/5

This was damn good, such infectious energy. First half was sensational, before trailing off with a few weaker, although still good, songs in second half and it all started to become a bit samey. Its probably a 3.5, but for my enjoyment of the first half I gotta give it a 4/5 Fav track: This town

Not the most deep-cutting lyrics, but the 'beats' are fun and the album hits are absolutely iconic. Consistent theming means this is a reliable entry for light hearted pop fun

Almost every song is pure La-la-la from the Go-Gos. Only one song I half liked on this album - "Skidmarks on my heart".

Way better than anticipated. Guitar tone was consistent but still interesting on every track. The bass being so prominent was surprising but also incredibly well done. Just a really great album altogether.

Dit all-female punky new wave pop album katapulteert je naar een high school begin jaren 80 in een random Amerikaanse staat. New wave is dé sound dankzij Blondie. Daar zijn dan een stel grieten die met zomerse zorgeloze energie de opwindende soundtrack van uw spring break maken. Deze dertiger waant zich even een Amerikaanse tiener jock, vooral dankzij Our Lips Are Sealed, Tonite en vooral We Got The Beat. Dat laatste was het enige nummer dat ik al kende, en blijft de sterkhouder na deze luisterbeurt. Even afdwalen, mag het? Zangeres Belinda Carlyle, Carlail, Karlittle, CARLISLE moet in de jaren erna nog ondervinden wat voor een 80's symbool ze zal worden. Ze kleurde mee dat decennium, en dat is tot in onze contreien gehoord. "Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth? Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth!" De meesten hebben dit wel eens meegekeeld op een silent disco of iets dergelijks. Het nummer heeft voor mij extra betekenis gekregen door de Black Mirror aflevering San Junipero. Mijn tip voor jou, liefste lezer: check die aflevering of heel dat Black Mirror seizoen nog eens. Over katapulteren naar de 80's gesproken! Terug naar dit album: wel het mag er zijn in die top 1001, maar het is niks waar ik vaak een hele plaat van hoef te horen. Voor dit album in zijn geheel een 3 en een spreekwoordelijke klets. This is a good pop rock album, even if it doesn't really speak to me that much personally. I enjoy the hits a lot and a few of the other tracks but I think it would be pretty easy for me to have this one on in the background and not really be drawn to check what any specific track is called. It's never bad, just kind of right down the middle for me. They're a cool band though. Standout Tracks: Our Lips Are Sealed, How Much More, We Got the Beat, Can't Stop the World

None of it is bad, it’s all well executed new wave bubblegum pop punk, but if those two songs weren’t on this album what else would we talk about?

I really enjoyed the upbeat vibe of this album. Not really an album you can listen to as a relaxing unwind album but it was fun. That's all I can really say about this album though it wasn't groundbreaking just fun. Very much had an 80s vibe but again that's not a complaint in anyway. Stand out songs: Our Lips Are Sealed.
