Reviews (page 7 of 8)

The guitar work on this album is really great, often overwhelming the other aspects of the tracks (for better and for worse). Unfortunately this album jumps around so much that there isn't really any throughline to grab onto other than that. I do always appreciate a good "Greensleeves" cover, though. Favorite tracks: "Morning Dew," "Beck's Bolero"

The UK blues Rock scene of the 60s was a very incestuous thing. People would start bands, split up, go off on solo projects and then reunite for super groups. Jeff Beck was originally part of the Yardbirds but then fired in the middle of a tour. This was his solo album featuring Rod Stewart on vocals, who, it has to be said, is not really the best fit for this sort of blues music. In fact there’s a good argument to be made that white blokes from England shouldn’t be really appropriating black American music like this. Weirdly enough this album also includes a version of Greensleeves which at least is authentically English. but doesn’t really fit with anything else. The best track for me was the bouncy singalong Hi Ho Silver Lining (included on the bonus track version) which I remember from many a school disco back in the day.

# 529 : Truth A milestone in rock guitar and blues-rock fusion. Beck’s playing is top-tier, but aside from “Rock My Plimsoul”, most tracks blur together. It’s good, just not one I’d revisit often. Worth a listen for the history, not the replay value. Favourite track: Rock My Plimsoul Listened: 22/07/2025

Very early rock, it is what it is.

Some of the songs were okay but others not to my liking

It was ok but pretty forgettable.

Not a fan of Rod Stewart's vocals. The guitarwork is pretty solid though. It would be cooler as all instrumental.

bruh... i just don't see it. in what world is this "metal"? this is just another white dude covering or ripping off black blues musicians that will stand the test of time. this? not so much. is there nothing the brits won't colonize????? favorites: greensleeves, i ain't superstitious. two songs i already knew. the rest is just led zeppelin lite starring rod stewart

Damn, that was boring... Genuinely one the least fun hard rock albums I've heard. Beck's Bolero was the only song I liked. The rest were not unlistenable but just not fun. Lacks energy, lacks passion. Didn’t particularly like this one.

Langweilig, es nimmt mich nicht mit.

A little disappointed by this album. It's an okay enough blues rock album, but I feel calling it one of the first metal albums is a bit of a stretch, especially considering the other proto-metal albums released around the same time. Fine enough, but unremarkable. Top tracks: Rock My Plimsoul, I Ain't Superstitious

Soft dad rock

Can’t get past the fact that Rod provides vocals to all these tracks. The exception being Greensleeves which really should have been vetoed. For the finale, “I Ain’t Superstitious”, and for the citing of this record in the birth of heavy metal, I up my rating to give two stars.

Didn’t really excite me to be honest. I think it also suffered from being right behind are you experienced

Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland Generell gut, aber zieht sich viel zu lange.

Nah. I'd have fallen asleep to this in 196-whatever as well. It's actually ok, but it *feels* (ie., in a subjective way) a bit pompous.

Irgendwie prototypisch und in der Zeit runzlig und muffig geworden.

Very meh

Solid blues piano on that one track but the Old Man River cover was embarrassing. Just another white dude playing blues guitar in the late 60s

jeff beck ur album was okay im gonna need to relisten tho

What a mid-ass waste of time. Didn't even finish it.

Bit noodly and unfocused. Some of the latter tracks were pretty good.

I know that this is an important album for what it portended for rock.music moving forward. But to me it just sounds like blues karaoke. The piano playing on the 2d to last song save it from being a 1. 2/5

☀︎j’aime pas le blues ☀︎what the heck Greensleeves 2.5

okay cool now ask me if i give a fuck

This album is very forgettable to me, while I don’t remember necessarily disliking anything on this project. Nothing I would go back to. If someone feels real strongly about me relistening to this album I could give it a go, but for now I’m leaving it as an unexciting and inoffensive listen

This is #day261 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it's kind of weird listening to a band called Jeff Beck with not-Jeff-Beck behind the mic. Overall, it feels like I suddenly caught a classic rock radio station. Typical late-'60s hard rock and blues rock, with wah-wahs galore. Also, it just so happens I'm not a fan of Rod Stewart's vocals. I gave his solo album a 2 a couple of months ago, and I can't go higher than that here either. Looking forward to #day262.

White British guy blues is one of my least favorite genres heavily represented on this list. Never does anything for me.

Pretty boring.

He's obviously enormously respected, but I don't get it.

I wondered why I hadn't listened to much of the OG Beck. And this is why. Not sure what exactly I didn't like. Too blues rocky. I didn't even really care much for the Shapes of Things revamp (my favorite version is by The Allman Joys mostly because I think I heard their version first). And on top of all that I am not a fan of Rod Stewart and, even though he isn't prominently featured, it's not doing this album any favors. Reading about "Beck's Bolero" makes it sound like it was the first heavy metal song ever written, but I didn't see the appeal.

I've seen this guy's name around my entire 4 decades of life and I still can't figure out what's supposedly great about him. Feels very average and, as such, not deserving of a place on this list.

Not a big Jeff Beck guy - I heard about the greatness, but have yet to hear it in the music....

It's been a pretty bland run of albums recently.

Truth be told this was a pretty uninspiring album. Nothing wrong, per se, just immediately forgettable.

Bravo to Jeff Beck for playing some cool guitar parts, and bravo to Rod Stewart for sounding so confident while singing absolute garbage

Great musicianship can't overcome my seemingly innate dislike of Rod Stewart. I also don't understand why this blues-derivative stuff gets so much representation on this list. No interest in revisiting this one.

Hendrix for plebs Don't get me wrong, Jeff Beck is talented, way more so than I am, but what is this if not a bargain-bin Jimi album? And why is Rod Stewart here?? Jimi would never.

Ok one

Slow rock. I don't think it's form me. Nothing really stuck with me.

I'm sure Beck is quite talented. Nonetheless, I'd rather not.

I wasn't into large swathes of this - but could be mood related

скучный

If rod Stewart sang for led Zeppelin and the guitarist can't stop noodling. Clearly talented but mostly annoying.

This is not really my thing--like watching a bar band.

I find this genre a bit boring idk

Old school. I liked the faster beat songs.

cool start, but lost steam as per usual. i'm sorry, it's me, not you.

vocals and lyrics didn’t do much for me but the guitar is epic

Итс окэй, но музыка не совсем моя. Лучшая песня - Greensleeves.

First listen. Meh.

4.5/10

Not very good. Plus I never could warm up to Mr. Hot Legs.

I've never heard this album before. Another 60s album with bad blues. Ugh. This album meant a lot to a lot of people. But looking at it now there isn't much about it I can recommend. - The rhythm section is inconsistent. As in, they can't keep a beat to save their lives. - Rod Stewart had yet to figure out how to best use his voice. On a few of these songs his inclusion is a negative. - The guitar playing is beautiful on some songs but pretty sloppy on others. - The production values are as bad as anything I've heard in a long time. It makes this album unlistenable on headphones. Barely giving it 2 stars.

Have to admire the guitar skills and I didn’t hate it but it just all conjured quite a sleazy image. Also, Greensleeves.

Jeff Beck is a legend with a very distinct guitar style. But this album didn’t do much for me. I have enjoyed other stuff of his more.

Nothing to dislike but nothing I could really get excited about.

Just fine. I had never listened to Jeff Beck intentionally prior to this, and now that I have, I may not do it again. Almost the entire album was forgettable. Jeff Beck isn't really anything special as a singer, or at least, I've heard others do it better. I struggled to care.

Less than the sum of its parts given the talent involved. Slow and plodding and recorded badly to my inexpert ears.

It was fine. Not my style, and I see the value in it. Felt like a bad Jimi Hendrix

Lyrics: 1/5 Music: 3/5 Production: 3/5 Cohesiveness: 2/5 Overall: 2/5 Stand out songs: Shapes of things

With exception of the cover of "Greensleeves", I found the rest of this album to be a fairly boring blues album. Performances are competent but the choice of covering so many standards feels less than inspired. Yes, Jeff Beck's playing is crisp and technical, but this type of blues rock is very tiresome for the 2020s.

I was going to moan about this album being too long before I realised that the last 5 tracks were CD bonus tracks not part of the original work. Musically, it's all pretty samey, which is why the length annoyed me. It also felt rather fret wanky and, frankly, a bit dull.

Not my thing blues based rock is so fucking boring Rating: 2.2

I was listening and thought “Jesus this guy sounds like rod stewart” and now I’m seeing it was actually rod stewart. Ugh. Jeff Beck is clearly talented but not a single song stood out to me and I can say for certain I won’t return to this one again.

These vocals ruin it. When Rod shuts up I enjoy it more, like Greensleeves. Whilst it's definitely not the worst thing I've ever listened to, it's boring, not really any stand out tracks. The riffs are decent and the drums are good, but it evokes nothing in me. Combined with the god awful singing makes this a long one to listen to.

Tired old format

Really big stinker, Jeff!!!! Not a one star cause it does seem like it led the way to better things like led zeppelin

Sure! Okay!

rocker

blues rock from the UK. got a song or two that's good.

Idk, maybe it was cool for its time, but it was pretty boring to me. Felt like it suffered the same thing as the Dead do for me. It's fairly devoid of catchy melodies. Nothing very ear catching. But, eh, it's not Bjork so it can't be a one. Maybe like a 2.5

Gear: Fostex TH610 Artwork: 🫀🩹🥀 Mix: 🔪👂🩸 Musik: 🎸💙🛞 Wertung: 🩹🩹(🩹)/5

Ok. I’m not sure if it’s just the last few albums or what but I felt like they’ve all blended together in the 2-3 range. I appreciate the length, but I felt the album wasn’t anything special.

This sucks. I don’t care about his skills and Rod Stewart did better things. Nothing about this excited me.

The guitar is good but there's only so much Rod Stewart I can take in one sitting. As I said in other instances with Rod - if we were in a dark, smoky bar this would be great. At home in my pajamas not so much. 2/5

Was surprised to hear Rod Stewart start singing on this. Early Rod Stewart isn’t bad. As for Jeff Beck, I like him better than Clapton, but this album drags, especially the more traditional blues songs.

Pretty good. Yet again nothing very special though. Nice to have in the background because of the instruments and nice singing.

First time hearing Jeff Beck and such a unique voice Rod Stewart has. Great guitar riffs.

Beck's a baller but I never really liked Rod Stewart's singing voice, and that's Truth.

On a positive note the guitar was very good. However on most of the songs it felt like there was somthing missing. Also it gave me Rod Stewart vibes

Blues rock from the late sixties. This should be my kind of music. Beck has always been hailed as a guitarists guitarist. So many of my favourites list him as a major influence. And Ron Wood and Rob Stewart before Rod really found hoarse. But I hate it. I don't know if Beck is technically great, or innovative or what. But whatever his technical brilliance or innovations I wish he hadn't. They don't add anything for me. A grudging 2 as there are a couple of OK tracks.

Decent guitar driven rock, no doubt it was heavy and loud at the time, but didn't get the blood rushing for me.

Blues gjort til rock, solid guitar, men ikke så fængende

I just couldn't get into this one!

On paper I should love this. But it leaves me cold and I think it’s Rod’s voice mainly. There is something pedestrian and lacking here that failed to capture my attention

Really dreaded listening to this when I saw it pop up. Just that standard guitar based bluesy fare from the 60s that I find so boring and uninteresting. I'll say that this seems like it's on the better end of that kind of music. It's a bit far out and reaching. But still not doing much for me.

Sometimes you just need to jerk off. You don't have to do it with a guitar in your hand. Yes, a lot of these guys became rock legends. But this is just boring for me. The late 60s English rock guys who just did blues covers is so played out. The originals got good but Americans did this part better.

Huonolle albumille joka ei ärsytä annetaan kahta töhteä eikä yksi, koska tällä listalla riittää päätä runnocaa musiikkia, sekä erilaisia vihantunteita joita itsestäön tiennytkään ennen projektin aloittamista.. siksi tämä mitätön albumi jodta en edes raaskinut spotifystä löytymättömiö biisejö kuunnalsta läpi saa kahden verrsn... objektia? Ehkä high grain-subjektia, kaiken maailman ratovaa nilseää ja sikisevää arviota rukeltava, kynänkärttä terottamatta, huvin lutveen peittämänä, elämässä elämättä, musiikkia päähän kuolematta, Ikusisesti niinkuin se valleuksen perpsektiiviin sovelttuna koettavana, vaelluksen päättyminenhän ei itse vaellusperspektiiviin kuuluva, ja siksi sitä tuskaa muuttana, vaan kestävä ja virtova on voima joka päätä hangattava...

Might have been groundbreaking in 1968, but I could walk into any bar in any town and hear a band that sounds exactly like this.

The links this site has to Spotify are weird. The full record is up on Spotify if you just search, but the current link misses ten minutes of it. Anyway for the most part this passed me by. Probably because of Rod Stewart but this feels very mid 70s. Which I guess as it came out in 68 makes it ahead of its time? 56 years later it doesn't feel essential anymore. Mainly feels like a Led Zep album without any standout tunes. This might have come first but it's definitely not better.

not slay 2/5

Music? Yes, decent. Vocals? Nah, I can absolutely leave them.

Jeff's pretty damn good at playing the instruments. It sucks that his voice is so grating.

Not particularly Interesting to me

I think I would have liked this when I was younger, but now it's pretty whatever.

You can definitely hear the similarities between Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on this album. Some of the riffs could have been on Led Zeppelins first release. This album has four superstars still finding their way, and is kind of raw & lacks a solid song foundation. While there are glimpses of what's to come, it still feels like freshmen trying to get in the senior keg party.

Torn between a 2 and a 3 as there is something there, just can’t put my finger on it

Let Me Love You Baby You Shook Me Rock my Plimsoul Beck’s Bolero Great use of guitar and a classic feel to it. Very passive listen

Did not love this. I got bored. This just feels so similar to too many albums I have heard on here.

I have already shunted all of this out of my brain

Couldn’t get past his voice, which sounds like Rod Stewart. Liked the instrumentals most.

Not really my cup of tea. I can respect the musicality and the professionalism of it. Just not doing it for me.

Liked the gritty, sticky carpet sound, but not for ne.

Why is Beck considered among the best? With only some occasional exceptions, this is just another basic blues record, nothing too nice about it.

Stuck in the in-between in the worst way possible.

The instrumentals on here are the best part, where you get to see Jeff Beck flex his muscles. Slightly convinced this might've been used to Trojan horse another Rod Stewart album into this list. Favorite tracks: "Beck's Bolero", "Blues Deluxe"

Great instrumentals and mixing, but not much else exciting going on here.

greensleeves made me think of old European cartoons about folklore creatures in the forest and cute stuff like that I really liked the song after this image popped up into my head rest was shite

Kinda middling effort and not something that resonated with me. Nice is as far as I would go. 1 star is for obviously bad. Nice = 2 stars. Maybe (unlikely) to listen to again.

I Ain't Superstitious

Great guitar work. Wasn’t for me.

Pretty disappointing to be honest. Jeff is such an incredible guitarist, but he overshadowed by Rod Stewart’s vocals and all of the other instruments. All of the covers on this album add practically nothing to the original that would explain it’s presence. Just what a cover band would play. He’s only credited as a writer on three songs on this album and they are all so derivative. It’s the blues in its most basic form, but with a guitar solo. A good solo, mind you, but not one to justify the song’s existence. Everything is so lackluster it’s incredible. Except for maybe “Beck’s Bolero”, but that was written by Jimmy Page so I don’t know how to feel about that. Also, listen for a noticeable snapping sound in the background. This is the type of album that leaves me with the feeling that they could do something so much better, but fumbled on this project specifically. 2/5

Jeff Beck is an awesome guitarist. Rod Stewart is singing lead vocals on the album and I'm not a huge fan of him.

Not The current mood for this

An interesting one. Mostly the same kind of early rock-and-roll vibe, but has sprinkles of experimental guitar sounds that are super innovative. Crooning and rolling. Feels like navy blue sheets.

When this is good it's very, very good. When it's OK it's OK, but when it's bad - oh, yes, Greensleeves I'm talking to you - it's horrible. The blues rock tracks are pretty damned good. Let Me Love You, You Shook Me, Rock My Plimsoul (despite the cringe title) and I Ain't Superstitious are all stand out tracks. The version of the album I initially downloaded didn't have Blues De Luxe on it, but that's not bad either. Of the rest, not sure about Shapes of Things and I've heard better versions of Morning Dew. And then the rest... Beck's Bolero (also not on the initial version I downloaded) seems like a bit of a self-indulgent wankfest, and I really don't get this version of Ol Man River at all. And the plodding, turgid version of Greensleeves seems like it belongs on a Spinal Tap album. I have no idea what the hell they were on when they decided it belonged on this album, let alone happy with this recording which seems like it's just filler. It's maybe Grade 4 classical guitar standard if that. A real indictment and it pretty much destroys this album by itself. So, a score. This has three or four tracks I could listen to regularly, but as an album I never want to listen to it again - a combination of Greensleeves, Bolero and Ol' Man River pretty much guarantee that. So it's a 2

En vieläkään ymmärrä, missä mielessä Jeff on loistava kitaristi. 2-.

Yeah it's good guitar playing but sounds like a lot of other music, especially because these aren't original songs

I have a degree of received respect for Jeff Beck as a guitarist but this style of stodgy blues rock just bores me. And when it’s basically all covers what’s the point, really?

Greensleeves- instrumental may be my favorite of the album. There has been no real standout in this album for me, but it was a nice easy morning listen. I Ain't Superstitious ended with some pretty psychedelic guitar playing which I definitely appreciated. Overall, I recognize that it was a good album, but not necessarily my style. I would return to it for some casual, background listening.

Eh, it's alright, not really my favorite style personally

I can appreciate the guitar, energy of the band and rod Stewart's vocals, but the lyrics were the most generic bluesy rock/horny lyrics I've heard in a while, showing very little attempt to ever sound like they're his own. I think this is a solid debut for a group, but sadly left to father time it feels like just another rock album.

Jeff Beck is an amazing blues guitarist, and Rod Stewart is a legendary frontman. Put them in a room which lackluster covers and some uninspired original songs and you get the Truth. Apparently, the Truth hurts. The canned applause on Blues Deluxe made my day though. 1.5/5

Jeff Beck stakes his claim as a virtuoso blues-rock guitarist. While I can appreciate his skill and approach, this record falls a little flat for me between the abundant covers and mostly lacklustre original compositions. Surprised to hear Rod Stewart, who turns in a solid performance throughout. Overall, it feels more like a promo reel for Beck intended to convince other musicians and producers to bring him in as a hired gun. And it certainly does the job. But he needs a better songwriter in tow to pull off this album. Favourite songs: Greensleeves (an odd, but pretty moment), Beck's Bolero

Bored.

kinda fun to listen to early Rod Stewart, but I got pretty bored of this album

She said you remind me of Rod Stewart when he was young Yeah, you've got passion and you think that you're sexy And all the punks think that you're dumb

Rod Stewart coded

boring

The first 3 seconds intro was the best bit, struggled to hit those heights again.

Un 🐻ably ⚪️ Best song: Becks Bolero Worst song: 🔵 deluxe

Eh 2.5

I’m not a huge fan of the vocals on this album, but the music is decent. Not something in my general wheelhouse and looks like it’ll stay that way.

NO MORE ROD STEWART PLEASE! Jeff Beck is amazing, but he gets stomped by Rod Stewart and the ham-fisted piano player. Also you guys need to practice a little more, the drummer is trying to swing but my god is it awkward. Find the groove! Although with rod stewart screaming all over everything I can see how difficult it would be. If only there was an instrumental Jeff Beck album 🤔🤔🤔

Every time I think I've heard the blandest, most unmemorable album on this list I'm always surprised by the depths of boring I have yet to listen to. This album is about as forgettable as 60s rock gets and I'm assuming it's only here because it's apparently how ronnie wood and rod stewart got their start.

i didn’t care for this at all. i love blues and jazz and all that good stuff but my god, he really was just talking so much about his dick and it was like, shut up. but i can see where the influence would have been big i guess. i will say, that the song, i’ve been drinking was amazing and it gave me hope that more like that would come along…. it did not. so i would give that a 5 however i can’t, so unfortunately it’s a 2.

2.5/5 - was okay

I really didn’t like the style of this. Edit: Oh, it’s Rod Stewart. That’s why I don’t like it.

Not really my cup of tea, songs were too long and too guitary (although I know that’s the point) 2/5

Boring blues-rock album

I really liked the blues song but overall don’t care

even skipping this until weeks later it's impossible to not compare to Hendrix. There's parts where the rhythm section is very good. There's interesting bits of guitar sound are only in passing. Never gets near the rumbling earthquake of Hendrix & band. Might be a little more sympathetic if this was earlier in history. Not at all sympathetic to taking the interesting moments of music that already happened and paving them over into blues rock. Old Man River and Greensleeves very tacky. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Not very good mix quality, seemed like very muffled. Piano sounded dead and yet ear piercing. Also maybe I need a tour guide for this album to place it in historical context or something, just not getting the wow factor, sounds like a typical Saturday night blues bar band.

It was fine.

Vocals were overbearing and the album on the whole was a bit too self indulgent for my liking. Some interesting passages throughout and I'd imagine there are plenty of people out there who really dig this album, sadly I ain't one of em. Fav track: morning dew

This dude loves getting rocked all night long Found a lot of it to be lamely exaggerated rather than particularly soulful. Also was very confused by how Spotify had the album sequenced - not sure its a fault of the album but it certainly hurt the experience. Fave track: Ol' Man River

It's all a little too safe. Like much of Clapton's work, I never connected much with Jeff Beck. One of those figures that is technically great, and not without some great music in their catalogue along the way, but somehow for the most part still find a bit flavourless. Overall, this record doesn’t feel complete. It feels a little thrown together, and I got a bit exhausted with the on-end jam tracks one after another. I couldn't help but feel like there are other albums from this period that are just as jammy, but provide more of a voice to other instruments to create a whole piece rather that one feels a little more than just a sum of parts. Maybe it's his vocals, I'm not sure I've figured it out. Some deep searching songs here for sure, but nothing dangerous; nothing monstrous. Two and a half. Fave track: Beck’s Bolero

The guitar and rhythm sections are pretty great, but it all gets buried under the vocals. This is effectively a Rod Stewart album.

didn't make it more than 2 songs in

Meh. Are you really telling me that when you count up all the albums on earth, there arent 1001 albums better than this? Its OK, but its not great. In fact, I'm hard pressed to define it as good. Decent guitar work, but nowhere near the best stuff any of these musicians have made. 2/5

Boring and uninspired.

I was very disappointed by this album. I typically enjoy Jeff Beck's music, honest. His musical abilities are not to be understated. Frankly, the musical abilities of the band members is not what I dislike about this album. In fact, I quite like the instrumentation. Beck has great guitar tone and licks as always, and the drumming is great as well. The thing that bugs me about this record is Rod Stewart. It almost feels as though he doesn't belong in the band. His voice just bugs me sometimes, when he's going off the lyrics of the song to improvise. He fit in much better with the (small) Faces. There is also a TON of covers on this thing too. Like over half of the songs. I understand the importance of this record and why it was included on this list, but it wasn't as enjoyable as I expected it to be.

Me gusta el blues y me gusta el Rock, pero esto no me hizo nada. Lo otro, no tenía idea que estaba Rod Stewart aquí.

Pretty boring imho.

As musical education and history I see why it's here. I didn't especially like it but it's not "bad" or "annoying'. A showcases some vood guitar and drumming, changes styles a fair bit, shows off solid blues. It's music historian or serious guitar student collection stuff ... but to my ear, it's very much "period music" when listened to in 2023. Reminds me of Hendrix era. even is it's "important" and worthy and well rates, definitely not going to listen again and in terms of pleasure provided for me 2 stars, despite the artistry.

This seems to showcase Rod Stewart's talents as a vocalist more than anything else. I've never been a huge Jeff Beck fan, so this goes right past me.

Jeff Beck was a true guitar god. Unfortunately, it doesn't really show on his debut mostly consisting of blues covers. The production is poor, and the record seems unfocused. 'Beck's Bolero' is cool though.

Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Nicky Hopkins… The list of legendary musicians appearing on this debut album is legendary in itself. The product not so much.

Feels tired and strange. Old man river and Greensleeves covers don't fit at all. 2

I didn’t hate any of the songs on this, but equally nothing on this record made any impression on me at all. Not a big fan of the vocals and I found this kind of blues rock pretty boring.

just not my fave style

moderately bland, another british white guy playing the blues, whatever

An album of I think mostly covers. They're well done, good guitar work, but this is more of a historical interest as far as evolution of rock music.

Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart. My lesson today. Every virtuoso individual performance does not make the whole album. For every solid guitar sound there was a Rod Stewart vocal. That means NO for me. There’s a time and place but this was not it. 2 stars.

I just can never get into Jeff beck… he’s an amazing guitarist, but his music does nothing for me.

Do I have to listen to Rod Stewart blather and wail? Jeff's cover of Greensleeves is pretty good. Wow what a chore and a half.

Ever wondered what the first Led Zeppelin album would sound like if they forgot to write any decent songs and got Rod Stewart to sing them instead? Me neither. At least there's a comedy version of Greensleeves on here for light relief.

I can't help but compare this album to both the original blues songs and the better Led Zeppelin covers of those blues songs. It's not that the Jeff Beck versions are bad, they just feel inferior to both the originals and Zeppelin covers. For many of the songs, it doesn't feel like the band is actually inhabiting the song, just playing it.

I liked the guitar on Blues Deluxe. The rest of this hasn’t really stood the rest of time in my opinion. Didn’t like the vocals and wouldn’t listen again. It’s not bad but let’s just say when the next edition of this book comes out and they need to make some more space, this one could probably slide out unnoticed 👍🏼

It felt like every other song was either about having sex all night long or being heartbroken. Not feeling it.

Pretty obnoxious to name yourself as the sole artist on an album that you don't even write or sing lead vocals on for every track. It should have been given a proper band name instead of marquee credit for someone who was merely one of many that collaborated to make this album happen. My gripes about who the album is credited to aside, this is okay. I always enjoy Rod's vocals, he makes the album listenable for me. And the music is generic 60's rock n roll which my ears always like. But nothing jumps out at me as a life changing track that reaches my soul. Final verdict: I'd probably be more generous if this album was credited to the right people.

What even is this album?

A little all over the place. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Hearing sounds that are on display better in other albums that came out this year. Lyrics didn't grab me either unfortunately.

This album mirrors my experience with The Yardbirds. Last year I finally listened to their debut album. I didn't like it much at all. One amazing single and a whole pile of early rock rough cuts. It ends with freaking My Girl Sloopy. I felt the same about this album, except there wasn't one amazing single. I did enjoy Rod's vocals when he got to sing. His voice isn't great but it's unique. Greensleeves feels like it doesn't at all fit. Ol' Man River is wildly tone-deaf but not surprising. It was a different time and place. I don't know. I've been told Blow by Blow fits my tastes more in every way so I look forward to that album.

I'm not sure what I expected, but I found it didn't really go anywhere. I'm not sure I'd listen to any of the songs again, and unfortunately I didn't find it memorable.

Sorry but this didn't wow me

Truth is, this isn't good

This really sucks in the most generic way.

Nice blues rock, but nothing distinctive than what a blues guy at the corner bar could do.

Nothing bad, but nothing really distinctive too. I don't know... Classic and generic for every musicians. Generic blues rock. I didn't need another version of Shapes of Things or You Shook Me. I didn't.

DNFing because why in HELL would this man do an old man river cover hfjfqudiuifui JAIL! Also I was getting bored I'm so sawri

more “blues” night at the pub

Hienoa tulkintaa, vaikkei erityisesti säväyttänyt

It was acceptable to listen to. 2.5

Omg jeff beck gjorde greensleeves??!?!?!?!?!?

Helt ok i mindre doser men sångaren är jobbig, gitarrspelandet överdrivet och låtarna ganska meh

Best Song: I've Been Drinking. The only song where I felt like the singer felt what he was singing. Worst Song: You Shook Me. It's got all the trappings of blues without the soul and authenticity. Overall: Relatively flat and uninteresting blues. Didn't help that I had Jeff Beck confused with Jeff Buckley, so this really clashed with my expectations. Regardless, can't imagine turning to this when actual blues music exists.

Never heard whole album before. New: 04 You Shook Me 08 Beck's Bolero 10 I Ain't Superstitious Liked his 06 Greensleeves. I'm not a massive Rod Stewart fan.

Solid blues type album. Let me love you is a highlight

Both shreds and I have zero desire to ever listen to it again

Impressive guitar work, but jeff beck's voice doesn't really do it for me.

Ekkert sérstakt. Hlustaði á hundavaði, gleymdi að hlusta á réttum degi vegna HM í Katar.

meh. Kinda indulgent and meandering. Feel like I need a potbelly to listen to this. 2 stars.

more white man sings the blues. you can go to a jam night and see someone of a similar standard any night of the week. admittedly they are probably doing their best impression of Jeff but the point is its nothing new and every small town in the country has a 50 year old white bloke who can play guitar like this.

Truth is the debut album by English guitarist Jeff Beck. It is a blues rock album featuring some lighter, pop songs, but Jeff was interested in the heavier, rock sounds. The album was nice, but nothing substantial grabbed my attention.

Not my kind of boomer music 4/10

This album is ok. His voice is nice, but the music didn't captivate me in any way. Plus parts felt like they dragged on. Just not my thing I guess. Favorite song: Morning Dew Worst song: Blues Deluxe

Fuck, it's a Rod Stewart album in disguise. At least he isn't in the driver's seat, but you still have to put up with his "aunt with a two pack a day habit" vocals.

snark vad detta var trist!!!!

I can see his influence on so many artists, but they just seem to do it better. Led Zep for instance. Decent album and obviously talented, but I don’t quite like his voice and feel it went on a bit too long. There are also some tracks that are really self indulgent.

This was a bit boring sadly, didn't get too much out of it at all

The instrumentation is fantastic and this album is very influential to Hard Rockers of the next generation. That said, it's not great... Like almost all Rock and Roll artists of the 60's this has the blues elements involved but they aren't all that intriguing. I can see how some classic rock fans would gush about this one but I'm simply not a huge fan. I don't think it's bad but I'm sad I didn't like this more. Save some time listen to the artists this album influenced. Rounding this up to 2 but it's a low low 2. Would be a 1.5. Saved by Beck's Bolero.

I listened to the whole album but I don’t remember it at all

Litt for rocka og for mange coverlåta

unfitted to our post-truth times

Enjoyed it, but doubt I'd go back and listen again

The best thing about this album is Hi Ho Silver Lining, an absolute tune which soundtracked birthday parties in rugby clubs and working men's clubs where my parents would enjoy themselves and I could eat all the scotch eggs and drink a ton of pepsi and hear grown ups tell jokes I didn't understand but knew were rude. Unfortunately that's a bonus track, and the album itself, while containing amazing musicianship and great tracks, is ruined by Rod Stewart's constipated shouting trying to pass itself off as singing. This is the third such album on this list ruined by this (The Faces and his solo crap). In short, this could have been four or five stars had it not been for that pointless haggis tosser.

60s/70s vibe. Rockig

Like the backing band and Rod Stewart. The songs are a bit too blues and drag on a bit long for my liking. 2/5

Talented but dated.

There are some cool moments like Greensleeves and Beck's Bolero, but it remains just amiable and doesn't have any striking or memorable moment.

I was more excited when I misread and thought this was Jeff Buckley. Couple of songs here that I did like (Old Man River, Greensleeves) but I've heard them done better by others or in different styles. First half of Beck's Bolero was compositionally interesting but I didn't love the performance of it in the second half.

Though I can vibe with several of the late-sixties blues rock this list has thrown up, this is too far. Not only is their plank-spanking of the worst order, there's Rod and a novelty version of Greensleeves. Too much.

Truth was entirely listenable thanks to a bit of looseness in the opener, but wow does the body of British blues rock do nothing for me. That's in spite of the presence of Rod Stewart here. Bunch of dudes convinced that demonstrating instrumental mastery magically makes the blues sound interesting. Learn something other than The Guitar, please.

Some of the music was really good, I quite enjoyed the psych/prog crossover. The blues numbers were boring. But the main problem is Rod Stewart, jeez I hate his singing. Tuneless shouting.

Truth is I'm not really a fan of this album or artist. Blues/rock is some of my favourite type of music but for some reason this just misses time and again. Could it be that he's mate with that famous wife beater and serial gaslighter that has subconsciously put me off? it's like hendrix without the subversion, like cream without the talent or even the stones without the sultry pouting. can't pin it down but the thing lacks groove man.

Twiddly guitar blues rock.

Hmmm. Bästa låt: Ol' Man River.

the guitar work on his album stands out. covering "greensleeves" is an interesting choice, and i think beck did a nice job on it. recent news came out about a new jeff beck collaboration. i am certainly being biased but i can't bring myself to care a fig about this album.

Honestly, this was okay, but it didn't do much for me. I was surprised at how hard this album went for 1968, though.

It was an ok blues/rock album that really didn't bring much to the table. Felt like there was a heavier blues influence rather than rock, even though at the time there was the transition phase between the classical blues/blues rock and what we now know today as rock. Best: You Shook Me Worst: Blues Deluxe Note: Spotify had the Remastered album with additional songs, I only listened to the original tracks from the album.

Bad mixing

I hate to disappoint my fellow 60s heads, but this wasn't hitting for me.

Some good rock from JB

I've always respected Jeff Beck as an exceptional guitarist, but I've never heard his solo music (in fact I didn't know it existed). This is a decent project, nothing terribly memorable though. Obviously the guitar work is great, but that alone isn't enough to elevate this too much. Feels pretty generic unfortunately. Favorite tracks: Let Me Love You, Ol Man River. Album art: Really like the way this is designed, bold black framing and I like the font too. 2.5/5

Its better than most in this genre, but its still this genre

This album was a good reminder of why I find most of late 60s/early 70s blues rock tediously boring. 2/5

Wasn’t a huge fan of the music but understand it’s importance in the timeline for classic rock. Kinda sick of the mid 60s rock from the generator

Nostalgic!

A bloodless cousin to the white man's blooze 'n' soul served up by more skilled contemporaries like, er, the Dead or Rod Stewart. Does himself no favours with a pretentious album title and cover that would make Bono blush.

Not a bad album but just nothing there that keeps me interested and wanting to listen again no stand out songs

don't like blues

Big loud guitar based rock. But for me just missing the hook of the stones or Clapton - hard to explain why. Don’t live it.

classic rock tropes

A sleepy bluesy album of little note. I recognize that basically all these songs were stolen from Black people, but at least when Led Zeppelin did it they made interesting musical choices.

It's pretty good, but not exactly what I listen to. I think once I become more familiar with it, it will be better. 2/5 for now. Best songs: Shapes of Things, Morning Dew, You Shook Me, Beck's Bolero,

No hay dos estrellas y media.

Appalling. I love the blues, but I've heard many pub bands better than this. How could one of the world's best guitarists combine with one of the best voices ever to produce this? Bowie's version of Shapes of things is better - and that's on pretty much his worst album of the 1970s!! Flashes of brilliance in Blues Deluxe, but not enough.

A very fucking generous 2.

I can't explain why this doesn't click with me, but it doesn't. On paper, I would've thought this would be squarely in my wheelhouse. I love rock guitar, blues guitar, and I know Jeff Beck played with, influenced, and was influenced by some of my favorite musicians from that era. But...I don't know, maybe it suffered from decades of rock guitarists that followed and sound an awful lot like that. And, frankly, as I'm listening to more of the earlier blues and jazz guitarists -- mostly the black Americans who influenced the white Brits and then white Americans in the whole 60s & 70s rock explosion -- the more I'd rather hear those artists.

I can appreciate that this is seen as a seminal album in the evolution of hard rock/heavy metal but... To me this is just a turgid mess of borrowed blues riffs and a lot of showy guitar playing. And yeah, they can play, the musicianship on this album is phenomenonenal but that doesn't necessarily translate to enjoyable listening. Not for me. One final note, the cover of Greensleeves is possibly the most out of place track ever included on a record

There are some genuinely interesting compositional and voicing ideas on this LP, they're just too obscured by indulgent noodling and cloying vocals to make it worth the listen.

And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, this is what's called Schwanzrock!

Finding out that a pre-well known Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart were on this was more interesting than the actual album itself. I can see why it would be on this list due to it's starting points for these well known musicians, and its pre-metal riffs and its bluesy style similar to Zeppelin, but the whole album just simply doesn't appeal to me for repeated listening or to be loved.

terrible. i still dont like guitar solos. 2 stars at best.

Good musicianship but not really more than that for me

Not a fan of his voice

Below average in every respect. Sounds like a white cover band trying to sound black, well, apart from Greensleeves which was just embarrassing.

Terrible mix, flat vocals, average songs

Last 5 albums have included Rod Stewart, Faces and The Jeff Beck Group. Now this and I'm pretty over it. It's just more generic dad rock now.

Did not rly enjoy

ну какой-то гитарный блюзроковый чел, не моё, рекоммендовать не буду. Вроде крутой как музыкант и гитарист, но треканы не вкатили на мой дурацкий вкус

Apparently this is an important album in that it fuses blues with harder rock, and therefore laid the groundwork for heavy metal. For that I am grateful. However, as a listening experience for the musical layman such as myself, I couldn't find much of interest. Just seemed like fairly boring rock n roll and overly ernest blues sung with an irritating raspy vocal. 2/5

Not my favorite. "Old Man River" sung by Rod Stewart was really something...

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Shapes of Things, Greensleeves, Beck's Bolero Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Not a big blues rock fan, but this guy is an incredibly talented guitarist. My favorite part of every song was his guitar, as evidenced by me saving both instrumentals (Beck's Bolero is especially awesome). May he rest in peace, glad he was recognized for his talent while he was alive.

You definitely have to be in the mood for this. maybe even a little drunk Today I'm neither in the mood nor particularly drunk

Nothing offensive but also nothing really stuck out

The music was okay. I am not a fan of Rod Stewart's voice. This album is a "No" for me.

of it's time, LZ-esque at times but nothing special in 2023 tbf

Un gran guitarrista famoso entre amantes de ese instrumento pero no para el gran público. No soy muy de "guitar hero", en lo que se refiere a artistas no al juego, así que no me ha entusiasmado para mí se deja escuchar pero no es imprescindible.

I don't know why, but I just didn't enjoy this album.

The words “blues tinged hard rock feat. Rod Stewart” seems to have been developed by a crack team of scientists to strike terror within my soul. Everything Jeff Beck does on the guitar here is oppositional to my tastes, and made me feel like I was eating my greens, convinced that a varied music diet is inherently a good thing. And I curse myself, because they are of course highly skilled musicians taking joy in every additional guitar lick, whammy pedal wobble and vocal strain. I hope to enjoy my greens one day.

Sehr alt sehr viel Gitarre

I listened to the first song and I was confused how a group of people got together and wrote this song. Then, thought it sounded good enough to actually record, not only that, but to include it on an album and think it was good enough for the opening track?! Then... THEN the record company heard it and said, "Yeah. OK!" What?????? This thought went through my mind with every subsequent song. Including the incomprehensible covers of Old Man River and Greensleeves. Zero stars. Minus 5 stars for making me listen to Rod Stewart

I thought this album was pretty bad; all the songs didn't sound that great and were so forgettable. The songs also sound so quiet, and the instrumental always sounds mediocre.

1. thingz - 0 2. love - 1 3. deuu - 1 4. zhook - 1 5. river - 1 6. zleevez - 2 7. rock - 2 8. bolero - 1 9. bluez - 1 10. zuperztitiouz - 1

lo escuché medio por arriba, no me parecio la gran cosa

TERRIBLE

Big ass. Terrible voice. 0/10 0.00%

I feel like I have a better understanding of why white men in their 60s are so into collecting guitars and noodling around on them after listening to this album.

I really didn't care for this. Wanky blues rock by some wanker, whatever. The Wikipedia has a comparison to Eric Clapton, that's all you really need to know about this.

Sucks. Sorry. Boring white people British music. Becks Bolero was good

Rough road listen, the 'Blues Deluxe' is what sent this to a 1-star. Maybe the song would have been good in real life, but it became clear in recording that Beck and his band could not figure out how to change notes.

I did not care for this because I do not care about this. Never listened to much Jeff Beck, I just know he’s one of those “omg what a good guitarist” types and that’s not a thing that ever interested me at all. I dunno dude, I just need more of a selling point than virtuoso musicianship; as I am typing this, there’s some kid in a bedroom in, like, Omaha who can play as technically well as anybody on any “greatest guitarists” list but I’m not listening to that kid’s album. Blues music in general does not do very much for me at all, to the point that it does not even get my usual “yeah but look at what it influenced!” bump. When those elements give way to others, I pay more attention. There’s some good stuff here but it mostly all gets lost in mucky repetition. I think I’m talking myself into lowering my score. There’s novelty in young Rod Stewart on vocals and the fact that this is kind of a dry run for Led Zeppelin if you squint your eyes in the right way.

Not long after the needle hit the groove on side one, I was scratching my head wondering how (and why) this record came into being. It's got guitarist Jeff Beck's name on the cover but vocalist Rod Stewart's voice is front and center most of the time. Beck's guitar playing, when it *does* take the spotlight, is remarkably unspectacular here. The choice of material here is also befuddling: covers of "Greensleeves" (?) and "Ol' Man River" (??); a rehash of Ravel's "Bolero"; some Willie Dixon tunes, and (worst of all) some existing twelve-bar blues numbers rewritten by Beck and Stewart and passed off as "originals". Beck and his cohorts aren't doing anything that's terribly revolutionary here (except to heavy things up a bit); the mishmash of material doesn't help either. Beck made much better records down the road (such as the jazz fusion-ish *Blow By Blow* from 1975) but *Truth* is a pretty rough start to what turned out to be a much more distinguished career as a guitar slinger.

Jeff Beck is undeniably a talented guitarist, but the songs on this record just felt like they were full of uninspired blues riffs and incredibly generic lyrics and vocals.

thought it was boring

Controlled chaos is an apt description.

Really didn’t care for this. It might have been innovative in the late 60s but I just can’t get into this. Not a fan of this blues guitar work and the Stewart vocals do nothing for me.

This blues rock album is like a muscle car revving endlessly in neutral—noisy, flashy, and full of power, but ultimately going nowhere.

Listened to it twice, doesn't remember anything.

1/5 - I could not get into this album at all, I really didn't enjoy it. Spent most of the time listening to it just wishing it'd end. Not a good album in my opinion.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
