This is a classic, Underworld are so much more than Born Slippy

Yeah. You don’t understand. I had a passionate love affair with this band’s music back in the day. This was my literal soundtrack on my discman. Hot tip: get super high. Hop on the first car of the subway. Get right up by the front window. Hold onto nothing. Blast this at top volume. Surf.

What’s with the low score? This album is a classic

Had the chance to see Underworld live a few years ago - I now deeply regret not going this was utterly fantastic and i will be revisiting it a lot I am sure.

My kind of speed

Underworld carved out a career by mastering the sounds of warehouse techno and bringing it to the masses. “Juanita: Kiteless” doesn’t pull punches as an opening song. It’s successfully hypnotic, peppered with acidic synth arps, syncopated hats, and frenetic little melodies that fade in and out of consciousness. 12 minutes in, this all gives way to a heavenly loop acting as a beautiful way to outro the song. “Banstyle/Sappys Curry” felt like rain after a drought in the context of the electronic music selection in this list. So often Ive been disappointed by some lackluster dance music selections this list has to offer, and many times Ive referenced Chicane’s “Far From The Maddening Crowds” as a better listen - much more cutting edge with an actual sense for how to apply melody to a dance floor setting. Well my prayers have been answered with Banstyle! It’s got a jungle tempo with a subtle, pleasing percussion loop thats not nearly as heavy-handed as an Amen Break. The Sappys Curry side of this track presents a halftime switchup that seems to chug along in slow motion, accompanied by some instrumentation that I could only call ‘Indian trip-hop”. A funky set of synth chords lifts this thing up to a very colorful, fade-out ending. At this point in the record, I was adoring the commitment to each idea Underworld took on. This commitment continues on “Confusion The Waitress”, which wields a very classic Underworld sound. A jumpy but hypnotic drum pattern and a warbly, wiggly synth under some nonsensical spoken lyrics. “Rowla” feels a bit more like a “Born Slippy” song on impact: uplifting and super high-energy. It’s got one little motif to play on loop and you’re gonna like it through all its saturation and oscillations. “Pearls Girl” was right down my alley. A jumpy breakbeat pattern jolts out of the harmonic intro. The low-end sounds like some of the best stuff The Prodigy put out on Fat Of The Land. More added nonsensical lyrics that all mesh into one chaotic loop around the 6 minute mark. The last few songs that follow take things in a very interesting direction. “Air Towel” might be the weakest yet smoothest cut on this album. I can hear this song playing excellently as a 2000’s car game main menu song, or a still-daylight bar/lounge jam. But I do think what’s meant to be a bit of reprieve on this song turns into a bit of staleness. Still, a neat little song. What was MUCH more neat and WAY more little was the following “Blueski”. I felt aa though I’d been tricked by this one. A cunning guitar loop that plays on…and on…and on. All the while, I’m getting so very excited for a four-to-the-floor kick or snappy breakbeat loop (or both) to punch me in the face. But then, it doesn’t. Honestly I kinda liked the tease of it all. I could in my head make up the ways this melody could unfold into a full club mover. But it didn’t have to! Last is “Stagger”, which feels like a bit of a credits roll song. Stretched out percussion, a mellow bit of synth programming, and more of those nonsensical lyrics play things out in a way that make you feel like you stepped out of the club/warehouse you’d just survived in. This feels a bit like I’m using my one time for a more personal 5/5. I can tell you this isn’t a ‘perfect’ album for many reasons. This might not even be Underworld’s best project. I like some of their other songs. “Two Weeks Off” is very blissful. “Cowgirl” is a total mastery of its art form and should be listened to ASAP. But damn, this record is good. It’s commitment to an idea and effectiveness at getting a dance floor moving WHILE maintaining a fairly wide scope of accessibility — it’s all there. 5/5 for the second day in a row!!!

Disappointing that only 1 Underword album is on this list given some the other electronica albums that made it. I love Underworld and this is probably my 3rd favourite Underworld album. Its a 5* even without the later addition of Born Slippy - which still sounds amazing even though I've heard it 3 million times.

Its not Dubnobasswithmyheadman, but still very cool Underworld. Gains an extra star for winding up Americans that hate "techno"

10/10 90's techno with light vocals here and there. Very very good. Reminds me of the matrix and toonami. Would like to buy this on CD.

Het boek schrijft onder dit album over Born Slippy. Ok, ze geven het toe. Dat nummer staat helemaal niet op dit album. Maar dat is wel het punt. Hét nummer waar de notering over gaat staat NIET op dat album. Nog steeds is het een 5 sterren-schijf die iedereen mag horen. Door de openingstracks en Pearl's Girl alleen al. Maar dé plaat die met alles brak en een nog steeds overeindstaand eigen geluid neerzette was Dubnobasewithmyheadman. Vanuit een eentonige basis werd opgebouwd naar een modern-barok-achtig geheel, waarbij stemgebruik en -vervorming bijzonder knap werden ingezet. Soms ontspoorde het zelfs. Zoals in Cowgirl (Everything, everything). Dat stemgebruik is één van de vele vormen die Underworld toepast om schijnbaar amuzikale elementen prachtig muzikaal in te passen. Wellicht het meest onderscheidende van de band. En juist dat komt op dit album net iets minder naar voren, Pearl’s Girl als mooie uitzondering. En ja, Born Slippy had dat inderdaad wel.

This is the stuff i want from this website. Only skimmed the album but so unique and weird. I loved it. Something very diffrent from the standard guitar drum and base with vocals that is plagueing this website.

Some may call this drum & bass. I personally am looking for jungle.

Kinda surprised at how good this was.

The build-ups Underworld does keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is the good shit and reason why I'm trying to do this silly challenge. Best surprise album for me since Teardrop Explodes.

I'm still a little dirty that Underworld canceled when I went to see them at MonaFoma (their replacement PNAU were INCREDIBLE - so not that salty in the end!) but I really loved listening to this album! Apart from Born Slippy which was on one of my Hottest 100 CDs, I'm a bit of a late comer to Underworld and have one of my dearest friends and challenge mate to thank for introducing me to their dark and atmospheric beats! I listened to the original track listing this time around, and Stagger was my fave track from that, but I'm adding Born Slippy Nuxx to the 5 star playlist because its such a vibe and reminds me of when we went down a Trainspotting reading/watching/Irvine Welch rabbithole about 7 years ago - good times. What a banger week of music! I think this must be my highest rated week so far 609 albums into the challenge with 3 x 5s and a 4 this week! I'm anxious to see if my luck can continue!

Masterpiece

Honestly a pretty good electronic album. Varied, interesting, some lyrics. I liked it.

When it comes to 90s electronic music, Underworld is easily one of the top tier acts of the entire decade. While their sound is rooted in progressive techno and house, what really sets them apart is how progressive and forward thinking they were in the way they approached production overall. This album takes a more slow burning approach compared to a lot of other dance music of the era. Most of the tracks stretch to around eight minutes or more, embracing gradual build ups, hypnotic repetition, and ambient textures that create a deep, trance like atmosphere.

Quintessential British underground electronica.

Some great momentum gathering again as I close in on the 200 milestone. This is one of my favourite electronic albums of all time, and quite simply a game changer for the era. The opener "Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream Of Love" is up there as one of the best songs I've ever heard, particularly so with the remastered version where a greater clarity is afforded to it. A mesmerising journey from start to finish across 16 minutes, it runs with the burgeoning progressive house sound of the early to mid 90s, and evolves it into something which transcends time and oozes class. A masterful exercise of controlled repetition and subtle, layered transitions. The rest of the album isn't too shabby, either, venturing into all manner of territories henceforth. Ethereal, atmospheric drum and bass? You've got that on the following "Banstyle / Sappy's Curry". Minimalist, yet simultaneously ground shudderingly bassy techno? "Confusion The Waitress" has you covered. Dizzying acid trance in the vein of Spicelab / Juno Reactor whilst amplifying it to new heights? There's "Rowla". An early example of hardstyle breakbeat being fused with atmo-trance? "Pearl's Girl". A more chilled out, downtempo, vocal led track to offer some respite and reflection towards the album's conclusion? Yep, you've got that as well with "Stagger". Suffice to say, I think any fan of electronic music simply HAS to have this record in their collection.

i will not lie, i absolutely loved this, i thought it was so textured and layered and those long tracks were just hitting, had be bopping my head the whole way through, i did not get bored at all through the hour plus run time, amazing record, i do believe my taste is shifting more towards these electronic records now

Love love love this album. Underworld is a big part of my musical upbringing. Solid 5 stars.

Classic. This will probably get a lot of low ratings from people that don't understand techno, but its a glorious combination of relentless beats, gorgeous chord progressions (Pearls Girl in particular is a highlight) and Karl's stream of consciousness lyrics. They make such a difference, creating vivid emotional landscapes beyond the obvious "Put your hands up" style of dance music lyrics. This, but more of it, more often, all of the time.

I really liked this Ambient Techno album. Loved "Banstyle/Sappy's Curry".

banger techno

That was fun, even without Born Slippy. Not entirely my thing, not now or then, but in this, it's #193 Prodigy's "Fat Of The Land" again: I'm pleasantly surprised how much it still slaps, despite being so much of its time. A nice flashback. My ratings are always at least partly influenced by the question "Is this an AYMHBYD?" and "Second Toughest in the Infants" is probably the closest to a meaningful representation of techno we'll ever get in here - and I liked it better than the Prodigy album - so 5 stars it is.

I wasn't expecting too much from Second Toughest In The Infants because i didn't remember it being too great but man, this album surpassed my expectations and then some. Every song here just manages to feel like the best kinds of electronic music with enough energy to be easy dance club bangers and enough ambiance to feel like you're in a whole new world. The guitars weren't there often but when they were there, they were just so unbelievably well done. To me, Underworld always represented the sound of a very late night, when adrenaline first starts to give way to exhaustion. It's like having been in the club until 2am, and heading home on the train (or God forbid, a late night bus through London). The excitement of the evening lingers but the rough edges of the city at night also creep in. The stream of consciousness lyrics represent the inevitability of real life after the escapist hedonism of the evening. It eventually leads right into a hopefully restful sleep but your mind is still going a mile a minute. If the music sounds overly repetitive, you may be missing a lot. Like a lot of the genre, "Second Toughest in the Infants" does rely heavily on a steady rhythm necessary for a trance-like state, suitable for dancing, travel or sleep (or in some places, religious experiences). But Underworld give you a lot more as well including rich ambient textures, waves of acoustic guitar, complex song structures, and introspective lyrics. Underworld, along with a handful of other 90s groups, were techno for the art house crowd. This album marked the second release from Underworld's MK2 phase. Having tried, without much success, to form a synth pop band, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde's bandmates quit and the group fell apart for a while. When the two finally recruited DJ Darren Emerson, they resurrected Underworld and focused on a new sound influenced but distinctly apart from the London rave scene. The three albums recorded as a trio are considered the peak of the band's career and any one of them could have made this list. "Second Toughest in the Infants" is possibly their most cohesive effort, even if it doesn't have any of their most well known songs. It was released shortly after they'd contributed two songs to the movie Trainspotting, marking the start of a partnership with director Danny Boyle that would eventually see Underworld playing the opening ceremony for the London Olympics. Quite a journey from the struggling synth pop band that nearly called it quits in the 80s.

I actually had a really fun time with this one! The grooves had me dancing, which is the whole point right? I've realised I never give edm albums 5 stars because they're repetitive, but that kind of comes with the turf. If it's repeating stuff you don't like or are bored by, then obviously that's not ideal. But fuck it, this one repeated bangers only.

I’m a sucker for anything that sounds like it could soundtrack the character select screen of a PS2 game. On vibes alone, I was going to love this album. But Second Toughest In The Infants takes that vibey, pumping, loop-able genre and elevates it to something serene, something almost religious. It does it in the lyrics, and in the builds, and it’s all so small and minimal, but the reward is in the details. Those details are hidden and demand attention to appreciate, but god, does it pay in dividends. The only thing that could make this record better is if “Born Slippy” closed the album out.

What an absolute banger!

Surprisingly good for its age, and incredibly fresh and innovative for an electronic album of this time.

They don't make stuff like this anymore. Acid tinged, hard edged house beats on the opener with a hypnotic melody that enters in the last third. Then we change tack, and Ban style starts with ambient breakbeats. Sappys Curry leans closer to rock, but with a psychedelic keyboard solo in the second half. Dense and very atmospheric. Then Confusion the Waitress has bleepy synths and a steady kick drum. Pearl's Girl is the biggest 'hit' on the record and it makes me wish I was at a warehouse rave in the 90s. Air Towel pulls from Detroit techno. This really covers a lot of ground.

The naming of killer boy....Reverend Al Green...Karl Hyde's cut-up lyrics are an under-rated part of Underworld's armoury, along with his sometimes sung sometimes spoken delivery. This is an amazing album, showing how swiftly dance music was changing the musical landscape in the mid-nineties. Not since progrock had albums seen lengths like this: the first two tracks clock in at over 30 minutes, and the first has distinctly-named sub-sections, another prog move. All the tracks shift and alter evolve slowly - a bassline here, a hi-hat there, as melodies and Hyde's vocals emerge and subside from the central groove that anchors each (and made them such a mainstay of the 'DJ compilation mix' of the time). Apart from prog, an even better comparison is the minimalism of Steve Reich - imagine Music for 16 Musicians with a drum machine and you're halfway here.

Sensational album on its own but ranking the re-issue with the addition of Born Slippy brings this up to a clear 5/5.

Fantastic album. I had heard Born Slippy .NUXX from Trainspotting and have listened to it countless times. So I was curious to hear what other work form Underworld would sound like. Like most ambient/electro/progressive house music, it's an acquired taste. To me, this is the soundtrack of 1996 nostalgia. I particularly the monotone drone vocals (I wouldn't quite call it singing) that you hear on Rowla, Pearls Girl, and Born Slippy. I can't help but hear Ewan MacGregor's "choose life" monologue when hearing Born Slippy.

Throwing down the gauntlet with two back-to-back half-hour jams that best illustrated their affinity for heightened nocturnal experiences, they up the ante with an increased reliance of grooves that not only prepared the listener for what was to come but established Underworld as the kind of group that can implement rock-adjecent aesthetic with ease. This may be seen as the middle child in their 90s trilogy of classics but this is just as integral to the dance scene.

The first few opening minutes had me dreading what this album might be, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. What a propulsive, dynamic, interesting electronica album.

Just the sheer fucking density of the sound. Insane and incredible and awe-inspiring. Never moves like you think it's going to. At once utterly jarring and soothing, a Hell's Kitchen nightclub and a Bali beach at the same time. Music that makes you feel alive.

Yes! Absolutely loving all the British electronica that is coming up on the list lately. Trippy and psychedelic, exciting and ravey but also oddly chilled? Made for great programming music unsurprisingly. This is definitely a record that I want to seek out. Favourite: Pearl's Girl

Genre defining, ground breaking etc

Driving in the car, this album kind of faded into the background, as tends to happen to music of this genre. However, listening with earphones a second time revealed much more, and I really appreciated it. Very cool, sophisticated techno with interesting touches. I really liked it.

I didn’t recall ever hearing of Underworld before, although I’m told I must have heard one of their other songs on the Trainspotting soundtrack. Then I realized I knew their song Cowgirls from the Hackers soundtrack. After listening to this album as well, I’m pretty sure that I probably danced to their music on many occasions. “Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love” is an incredible opening to this album. Instantly grabbed me and I knew this would be a real ride! By 15 minutes in I had decided this is some of the best electronic music I’ve heard on this project, or maybe ever. Nearly an hour more of music was on this album. Great variety! Sometimes up dancing, other times just chilling in ambient cool. This journey had many exciting twists and turns. I was constantly engaged - pulled along on an electronic adventure. Absolutely fantastic!

Up against a deadline at work this morning and this is precisely what I needed to keep me motivated. All killer no filler.

Pleasantly surprised! I’ve had a lot of issues with 90s electronic music on this list, but this album was right up my alley. Felt like techno and house sounds approached with a prog mindset.

What a great album (if you like trance/progressive techno, which I do)! This is something I would listen to when I am heads-down coding and love every second (of the music, not the coding). I'm giving it 5 stars since I still imagine I do heads-down coding. And I legitimately like the music. :)

One of my favourite EDM albums of all time. Untouchable from a production perspective, plus, Pearlsgirl is my favourite Underworld album too so 5 stars is a no brainer.

My family hated this because they felt it was over stimulating, meanwhile I was almost meditative, once again reminding me that Dyslexia comes with an overactive frontal cortex resulting in acceptance of overstimulation easier than most. I actually loved this album. In the late 1990s I rediscovered electronically with bands like Alien Project and DjBT, which you can hear the influence of this album in their work (Listen Aztechno Dreams if you get a chance). Incorporation of vocals with the very fast paced beats like in the song Pearl’s Girl somehow slowed it down. My key track was Rowla because it was so powerful. I do miss how later techno albums blend the songs into each other but it is a small change. The last two songs Blueski and Stagger were good but felt like the party was done and it was time to find a Denny’s. I’m coming back here again. 3.5/5? Possible?

I'm no expert on EDM, so a genre plump would be post-house, verging on DNB? Also presaging trance possibly? Decent beats, decent synth sounds. And vocals too which I wasn't ready for. So far loving it. First real dance album on the list and it's pumping. But consider also that the first track moves through various sections, doesn't rely for 16min on the same hooks. Interesting, EDM but in Banstyle there are some passages that have a jazz-like feel in terms of phrasing and an improv feel. It even gets a bit electro psych folksy feel towards the end. Reverb heavy, looped guitar riff. Ooh, Blueski goes back to the guitar again! But used as in loops to still keep that tight and artificial feel. Last two tracks are really low-key to bow out on a melancholy note. It is good, those textures and drums give me goosebumps Best track - Juanita, Banstyle 4 stars - great beats, hooks, song structures

Decent electronic and techno album. This was a pretty good way to start the morning. The beats were strong right away, and it had that kind of steady momentum that makes an album easy to roll with even when it's not doing anything super flashy. “Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love” was a solid opener and did a good job setting the tone. “Rowla” went pretty hard too. Favorite song: "Rowla"

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is an electronic album, which is also ambient at times. This is a very interesting listen. The beats keep things rolling along, and the vocals are fairly minimal, but other elements come in waves. This is a good album to put on in the background while getting work done. I would listen again for that purpose.

Seems like an important British popular album but I'm not sure there's enough to elevate it to classic status for me.

Really good, not quite Underworld at their best.

Their dancehall hits were a feature in the nightlife of my youth, and somehow it never occurred to me to listen to an album. Pearl's Girl was, of course, one of those club tracks I heard regularly. The opening two tracks are remarkable, sprawling compositions that have me thinking of artists like Ulrich Schnauss or Jon Hopkins. These are more in the category of ambient mood than song. I love Confusion The Waitress, a ballad of sorts, and the syncopated reverb of Stagger.

Maar het verzamelde wel alle grote tracks zoals Cowgirl en Born Slippy (dat op geen enkel regulier album staat? Althans niet de versie van Trainspotting zoals we die allemaal kennen?). Als ik dit album zo luister is het eigenlijk veel rustiger, veel meer ambient en lounge-elementen. Heel rielekst, zoals we onze broeder Electrische Eric wel kennen. Uiteraard beloont hij dit schijfje dan met 5 sterren. Zover zal ik niet gaan, maar ik vind dit wel helemaal prima om als achtergrondmuziek op te hebben op het werk. Ik mis dus wel de voor mij bekendere tracks en ik denk dat ze beter voor het live album "Everything, Everything" hadden kunnen gaan. Qua muziek zou ik hetzelf op 3,5 ster inschalen, maar als je een anthem als Born Slippy maakt, dan verdien je sowieso een bonuspunt.

I was definitely toughest in the infants, but album title aside, this wasn't too shabby. Hovering somewhere between three and four stars, but I'll mark it up as it's nice to see some electronica making the list.

it's not on the original version, but you really should listen to Born Slippy - Nuxx at the end to maximize the impact. pretty much the sum of what dance music meant in 1996 at its most soothing and restrained. some breaks, some house, a lotta techno, a touch of trance. not quite as easy to dance to as i was expecting, but very well produced nonetheless. deserves to be one of the 1001? yes! alongside Dubnobasswithmyheadman and maybe also Beaucoup Fish

I really like this album, it doesn’t have a banger like Born Slippy but it’s at times hypnotic, surprising and varied. I’m not big into techno stuff but if it’s of this quality I can dig it. 3.7

It's techno like this that makes you realize why electronic music has continued to last and improve. Even though it is now as marred with sub genres as rock is, this kind of oldie brings ya back

When I was a kid I believed this kind of music would be playing in the club. Probably because I really liked the blade movies (still do). Against my expectations I found that most clubs actually play music that was popular when I was a kid, the same music that is played in supermarkets, but then a lot louder. I'd rather have this. Techno is hard to make. It has to walk the edge between entrancing and repetetive. This record I feel walks the line beautifully. It is like an undulating black mass, constantly growing and changing, but continuously progressing forwards. It is a matter of taste of course, lots of people will find it to be too repetetive. Some songs (like parts of Banstyle and blueski) are in my opinion, but for every repetive minute, there are several interesting ones.

Kicked off listening to trip hop all day

There are a couple of really good tracks but the rest are a little less interesting. I’ve heard the album many times and in general I’m positive about it, but at times it does seem long and I wouldn’t say boring, but it isn’t very exciting. I think i will need to listen to it for a few more years to get into it more. I’ll give 3.5 for now.

Really cool. I love electronic music like this. Pearl's Girl was probably my favorite but a lot of the songs were good, although a bit repetitive. Helped me focus on my work too lol. 7.4/10

I really love Underworld, but this is maybe my third or fourth favorite of theirs. I personally think the album before and the album after are better and should be on the list instead of this one. However, I still think this is a very good album.

Weird album, but I liked it. Wish there was no lyrics in any of the songs to be honest but it made for some great night driving music. Weirdly one song wasn't available for me to listen to which was odd.

It's Underworld, It's a 5! I can't believe how much I love this band and how much of an influence they have had on my music playing and listening. I'm not sure I would ever have found them by myself, I needed the guidance of a work dude (I'll call him Wally) who used to play some of the strangest, challenging and occasionally irritating music in a very small office. Until one day he played 'Everything Everything', and my listening life changed forever. I came back to revisit this and knocked it down to 4 - with the exception of Nux (which does not technically appear on the album) I couldn't find another track to include on my 1001 list! I wish this were ANY of their other albums!

I saw another electronica album and thought about how much I dislike the author's predilection for Britpop and electronica. How many keyboard-wielding repetitive as hell albums Are There in this damn world!?!? So, I got prepared to hate. When first song started, I felt justified in my worry. Sucks. But, I'm in the game, so I'll bite the bullet and soldier on. Now, after a few listens, I'm happy to report that this is not total shiite! Well, the first song is totally repetitive crap, but the rest of this album is actually pretty good! I'd listen to Banstyle any day. There are only a few annoying moments on the whole thing. Mostly when the singer just repeats a word/phrase a few dozen times. It's Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee Crazee. At least that's what she says she says she says she says she says she says Blueski is fun. Quite different than anything else here and worth popping into a playlist. Even though slightly loop-y, it's not annoying. So I'll keep a couple of these in mind. I might even come back and listen to the whole thing again, except that first song. But I probably won't remember that, and when it starts, I'll be wondering if I was tripping or something when I saved this. Anyway, this might be the first of bit of soul-less electronica that give more than a 2. I'm going all the way in and giving it a 4 though because right now I'm vibing to it.

Would I ever listen again? Probably not. Was I kind of bee-bopping around listening this time? Yep

When the first track came on I thought “oh no, a techno house album”. don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy EDM. But house/techno can get too repetitive and gets on my nerves. I was very pleasantly surprised at the depth and layers this album has to offer. Enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.

I’m surprised at (but not disappointed by) the amount of 90s electronica on this list. This is a classic album and Pearl’s Girl a club hit. Good to be back in these waters, but I don’t imagine I’ll stay here too long.

I don't know what Electronica god I angered to get Kraftwerk then this back-to-back. But honesty, I don't mind it. The next album better be something different, though. 4/5 Highlights: Banstyle/Sappy's Curry

the best electronic album on the list so far

For me their best album despite the excessive hype for the (still good) debut, this has a more varied organic vibe - especially the second song Banstyle. The second part of this (probably the Sappys Curry) has some incredible spliced use of acoustic guitar loops, it's just ingenious and blissful. Where many people just diss this as techno, repetitive and too long don't get the context and nature of this music. It wasn't just for dancing to but was also music you can immerse and lose yourself in. They got the balance right, there's enough going on tied to emotion and deep atmospherics.

This is great, I don't really like house or what ever this is called, but I think Underworld do it in a much more creative way than most, maybe because they've got a singer, which naturally changes the way that the songs are structured. I think he's not necessarily the best singer, but he's got a really interesting style where he just says words with seemingly little correlation. The production is good, and I like how there's some breakbeats rather than just 4 on the floor all the time (which there is SOME of). Synths and stuff are cool obviously. I feel like some of these are too long and just drag on a bit. Favourite songs: first one, confusion the waitress, Pearl's girl (my favourite underworld song). Overall around 7/10

One big and pleasant surprise! I was expecting this to be dull Dance/ DJ, one of my least favourite genres. But the music is very atmospheric, ambient-like and I rather liked this album's spun-out songs. It doesn't move me enough to give it a five, but it's a decent four for me.

With one of the members coming from my hometown, I was excited to listen to this. I had only heard Born Slippy up until this point and was keen to hear more. Unfortunately I found myself asking ‘how much longer?’ over the course of the first track. But then, as the next 15 minute suite started, the album started to click. It swept me along and by the end of the second track I was a fan. It’s hypnotic music and I will be listening again.

I was not looking forward to another hour-plus electronic album and now have to admit I enjoyed myself an amount. Inspired beats that sound like they pull from breakbeat, ambient, and rave music. The vocals are a welcome addition. Soothed my soul at the office. I could actually see myself revisiting, thank you and god bless. I’d give this a 3.5 if I could, but I’m going to round up for once because I was so pleasantly surprised.

This algorithm for choosing albums definitely is not random. Another EDM album today, and a great one. If you don't know Underworld, you probably know their biggest song Born Slippy NUXX from the movie Trainspotting. Song was and still is HUGE despite being released 30 years ago. 30 years. Jesus. First track is heavily progressive EDM and a combination of 3 tracks. One of the reasons why I like EDM and full on sets is because of the seemless transition from one track to another and Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love is a great example of this. In a club scene, it creates a huge wave of hype hearing the transition to the next song and it's not so stop-and-go like traditional concerts. This album is dated, and is a more mellow than tracks we see today that are more high energy; but it's a great album at a time when the EDM club scene was still kind of developing.

Imagine if the album had Born Slippy.NUXX on it though!

I'm floating between a 4 and 3 on this one. It's good, its not their best, it doesn't really have a strong feeling throughout, so I'll be honest and say the final decider is that I've got 2 albums left and have spied my stats don't completely represent what a synth head I am.

Chill ambient techno dance music. Has some cool indie rock elements to go along with the electronic beats and ear candy, gets real trippy in parts and danceable in others. Pearl's Girl goes pretty hard, but the rest of the album is chill and laid back a bit.

When it comes to 90s electronic music, Underworld is easily one of the top tier acts of the entire decade. While their sound is rooted in progressive techno and house, what really sets them apart is how progressive and forward thinking they were in the way they approached production overall. This album takes a more slow burning approach compared to a lot of other dance music of the era. Most of the tracks stretch to around eight minutes or more, embracing gradual build ups, hypnotic repetition, and ambient textures that create a deep, trance like atmosphere.

Back when Beaucoup Fish (the follow up to Second Toughest) came out, it was in heavy rotation at my store. I grew to love that album. It wasn't until quite a bit later that I realized these were the same guys that had a minor hit with "Underneath the Radar" a decade earlier. Liked that song, too. After many many plays, I got pretty tired of Beaucoup Fish, so I wasn't sure what my reaction to this one would be. This sounded nearly the same as the album I'm more familiar with. I liked it for a while, but as it kept going (it is really long) I started growing tired of it. Thankfully, the album closer, "Stagger" came on and saved it. "Stagger" fits the album well, but it so different from everything leading up to it that the contrast ups the whole affair. This would be a solid 3 1/2 for me, but of course we can't give 1/2 stars, so I'll be nice and up it to 4.

I very much enjoyed this album from Underworld! I’d never listened to music by them so that was an exciting experience. I loved the house/EDM vibes of this album and it made for great workout music. I would definitely listen to this album again!

WOw bEtTeR tHaN i ExpEcTed

More interesting than I thought at first, pleasant overall and probably deserves repeat listens.

I enjoyed this both for what it is and for being a rare example of a dance/electronic album. First track is fantastic and is a masterful demonstration of how to keep building a track. I will revisit other later as time pressures meant I wasn’t really concentrating on the later tracks.

In my opinion, not the best example of what they can do (‘dubnobasswithmyheadman’ probably edges it) though ‘Pearl’s Girl’ is probably the best introduction to them. A somewhat frenetic, clustered, relentless series of driving beats with additional urgency from the vocals and melodies over the top. Fairly solid from front to back but otherwise nothing that necessarily blows you away. Suspect part of its reason for inclusion is the deluxe/reissued version which includes ‘born slippy (nuxx)’ which, although propelled them into the mainstream, I don’t particularly like.

The dream of the 90s is still alive in the Underworld. Although many tracks captured the repeitition of electronic music of that era, others flashed the promise of a post-Trainspotting world of music.

Finally a purely electronic album in the list,well actually the second on my list and i've already rated 62! I pretty much own everything from Underworld and what can i say for this great band that i actually heard a track of during the summer of 2025 in a Sasha/Digweed gig?This album is for the clubbheads,you have to have heard progressive trance,D'n'B and techno of that era to fully understand this. Techno is the sound of the clubs in the first place and still is what you hear in most oldschool djs sets. Tracks breakdown now: Juanita:Kiteless:To Dream Of Love, I can definately hear progression. the snare added late and the hihats and i also hear one track intersepting with the two others from time to time,i also hear a very addictive,haunting melody,this is a club track,a progressive techy trance for those who don't understand what this is,going further there are some acid techno abstact minutes and the melody interrupts dominating in a breakdown and more human vocals come in,builds up and goes high in tech energy and ends with sampling vocals in a 'Technologic' fashion.Basically they mixed all three original tracks to their taste so that justifies the long duration, Banstyle / Sappys Curry starts off with a drum 'n' bass beat,very moody and beautiful and with a lot going on in the background (samples,drops,effects) that keeps the interest throughout the track,nice vocals,sparse guitars from time to time,pads dominate at some point making it more emotional, intergrating with beats and heavy reverbed snare changing beautifully the tempo and guitars come back to shine in a hypnotic manner along with the almost whispery vocals,modulated synths strong presence along with exceptional use of hihats create tension leading to a totally experimental piece towards the end,complicated,diverse and genius track, Confusion The Waitress starts off darkly and powerful,nice hypnotic vocals,great techy structure,modulations throughout the track creates edges and tension, Rowla starts off with heavy synth and everything builds pretty much around it,highly dancable and addictive,constantly modulated bass changes the intensity and the keys of the track,reminds me of Laurent Garnier techno creations,those settings are not random and that's art itself,it kinda results in a acidic heaven,high voltage track-hear with caution, Pearl's Girl was the single from this album,lush pads and melodies,drum 'n'bass structure,nasty basslines, pretty much what Orbital were doing back in the days but more aggressive,vocoder vocals here ads to the power of the track,when pads and synths come back in the breakdown and till the end is like a catharsis,100% emotional,magic, Air Towel has definately some Kraftwerk vibes (Tour De France) from the beginning, it's amazing how they make it their own,maybe it's the silly 'lalalala' sample or the good English vocals, Blueski has the repetitive bluesy guitars intro in case you were missing some and pads underneath harmonises beautifully,ends up totally dry, Stagger starts off with heavy sentimental reverbed and delayed piano,the vocals here are amazing,synths and pads ad limbs to the emotional factor,plucky guitar and heavy reverb at both kick(almost boomy) and snare create something totally diffent towards the end,great electronica track proper for closing this album. I really enjoyed this album and i will give it a fair 4/5 only because i liked the previous ones more.

Moody and complex electronica

1. Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream Of Love - 10 Brilliant sound. It it actually three tracks combined into one, but the sounds on each are so good. It sounds like quintessential Underworld and quintessential EDM. Fantastic stuff. 2. Banstyle / Sappys Curry - 8 Another combined track with Sappys Curry being the longer of the two. It mellows out a bit during the second half of the track before eventually building back into a great finish. Banstyle is absolutely awesome. 3. Confusion The Waitress - 7 Instrumentally it's a brilliant sound with some awesome beats under toning the track. Lyrically it's a bit stale. 4. Rowla - 10 Great EDM sound. A brilliant track to dance to. 5. Pearl's Girl - 10 Brilliant track. Amazing 90s EDM sound. This is absolutely a classic and would be immense in any set and on any track listing. 6. Air Towel - 9 More great EDM sound. Brilliant beat and pace on the track that will keep you moving throughout it. Really great sound. 7. Blueski - 8 Instrumentally it's very good but unlike anything else on the album. Still very enjoyable. 8. Stagger - 8 Solid track to end the album. Not as EDM-based as it contains a lot of heavy drums in it but still enjoyable. Average Rating: 8.75 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 4.38 Rounded Down: 4 Stars

Way more subtle, layered and interesting than I was expecting. Had a more boisterous 'born slippy' view of Underworld in my head. This gave me a very good different perspective to them.

A fun electronica album. Some songs make me want to dance & some make me want to lay back & get lost in the pretty. This is very likely the genre I knew the least about on the 1001 list when I first started this project and so far, I like it more than I thought I would while still not knowing much about it. I'm looking forward to more electronic music and wondering if there are any 5/5 albums in the genre.

I was working in a record store at the time this came out. It was at a time of musical discovery and taste shaping for me. Albums I wouldn't have normally listened to by that point were now being found. While this isn't one of those albums I found at that point, other bands of similar vein, from Portishead to The Prodigy, were definitely in the mix. I hadn't heard this particular album before today. I'm most familiar with 2002s, A Hundred Days Off. I dig it. The layering here is super cool. While not everything works, it holds its own for keeping a vibe going. Just what you want from good electronica.

Opening the album with two 15+ minute tracks seems incredibly bold, although given the genre, perhaps not. The good news is that the opener, Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love, is brilliant. This provided the perfect companion piece for a productive hour or so working away at my desk. I didn’t know any of the tracks on this album, but I am a casual fan of Underworld thanks in no small part to Danny Boyle. Naturally, I had to go and listen to some of my favourite tracks like Dark and Long and Two Months Off afterwards, I shall definitely be exploring Underworld more.

First time I've listened to electronic music. It was surprisingly enjoyable.

I don't go to raves or take ecstasy, but I was running late to meet a friend, and this helped me get there a little faster 🏃‍♂️

Could've been a 5 if the songs were divided better

Det enda jag kan påminna mig om att verkligen lyssnat på av Underworld är Born slippy, vilket känns dumt eftersom det är en fantastisk låt. Den här skivan är väldigt tidstypisk 90-talstechno och även om mycket har hänt inom genren sen dess så gillar jag verkligen denna, i synnerhet den första halvan är riktigt bra. Härlig atmosfär och varierade produktioner med inslag av trance, gitarrer och breakbeats gör att det aldrig blir tråkigt, även om det är långt.

Pretty good electronic album

Some pretty great stuff on here. It's too long but as it wore on it won me over, so, mission accomplished I guess?

I found it so funny that this album is in this list. Back in the start of July, I decided to give it a listen and review in AOTY without me knowing it was a part of the generator. This is my original review: "With only one listen: I felt that the two longest song do get a bit boring, even though they have some interesting elements. With the track 'Rowla' is when the album started to click, to the point that I ended the album before I could notice. Great electronic album with a nice atmosphere." Now that I had to dedicate more time to it, I have a more formed and different opinion. First of all, the first track has become my favourite one. In my very first listen, I didn't catch the main medoly, which is a bit of surprising as it is very very present, and I think is great. The second track did also grew on me, and one of the reasons why is because it sounds so similar to the Menu Medley from Mario Kart Wii, so the song ends up feeling very nostalgic. And this is a current theme through the record, and I'm not refering to the similarities with Mario Kart Wii, but to the sense of nostalgia, maybe due to it being a part of a movement that is very distinct of the 90's music scene and not so much in the following decades. Along with the nostalgia, this album also sounds very warm and atmospheric. It can be very relaxing. In fact, it can be so much relaxing that in my first listen of the day I almost felt asleep. Not a great thing when you are working... In conclusion, this is a very nice album. I've heard better albums before from or close to this style of music (like Orbital 2 or Selected Ambient Works 85-92), but it reamins very strong on its own, specially thanks to its very unique ambience.

Always enjoyed this album though I do think the one previous should be on here instead. Songs do go on for a very long time but it generally works. I think you either will think this is great or you will be bored to death with it and I like this a lot more than I dislike it.

This was an intriguing discovery for me. For those who don't know, Underworld is a British electronic group, primarily consisting of vocalist/guitarist Karl Hyde and keyboardist/mixer Rick Smith. They started as an alternative synthpop act in the 1980s before pivoting to dance and techno from the 1990s onward. Listening to Second Toughest in the Infants gave me the sense of the breadth and depth of electronic composition that Underworld can conjure. Opening with the multiple-suite works of "Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love" and "Banstyle/Sappy's Curry", they're capable of ebbing and weaving through various hypnotic stylings, from aggressive breakbeat to softer ambient, from popping house beats to lush synthesizers over a drum-and-bass rhythm section. All the while, they introduce elements that help identify and anchor the tracks, such as the acoustic guitar strumming on cuts like "Stagger", the distorted synthesizer on "Rowla", and Karl's observational lyrics whispered over the mix. The duo certainly did their best to give each of these compositions its distinctive flavor, with enough twists and turns to try and maintain listener engagement. That said, this album still runs rather long at 73 minutes, though paradoxically, the fault is not with the opening two tracks, as those were some of the most enticing electronic pieces I heard in some time. Instead, there was a more noticeable lull in the second half of the record, between the repeated synth notes of "Air Towel" and the spare acoustic melody of "Blueski" that felt underdeveloped. I wish these tracks had more time in the oven in comparison to others on this record. Still, Second Toughest in the Infants was a solid electronic record, as Underworld redefined themselves to become one of the more distinguishable electronic acts out there.

I liked this album a lot, I don’t really listen to much electronic music. I do have to wonder what exactly sets this album apart from the countless other electronic music but I’m not complaining.

Slower burning and more background-y than its peers - if you're used to the bombast of Howlett, James, Rowlands/Simons et al. then this may hit a bit different. But that doesn't mean it doesn't hit, and by the time we get to "Pearl's Girl" you can hear what the fuss is all about. Now, who's in the mood for some Wipeout XL and a can or two of Surge?

I actually totally dug this album. It was that old school hacker shit kind of techno that you could never really dance socially to, haha. It made me want to download a car.

Good re-listen.

The album could be trimmed, perhaps that's just the nature of the genre. Other than that, a deeply pleasant experience.

This album got me dancing for the first part of it. Then it was kind of repetitive and depressing. I really enjoyed it.

I wish I had a chance to give this a second listen, unfortunately it just couldn't happen today. Second Toughest In The Infants is some really detailed, texturally interesting electronic music that I got a lot out of. The compositions here are lengthy and almost trancelike, with a kind of melancholic, chilly atmosphere. The sounds are tasteful, and the way the compositions evolve is really organic and makes these songs go by pretty quickly for how long they are. For example, Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream Of Love and Banstyle/Sappy's Curry are *both* longer than 15 minutes, and they are brisk and engaging throughout, as long as you are kind of willing to be carried away by the music here. Karl Hyde's vocals fit in nicely too, with some surprisingly good melodies. The only problem I could really have with this album is just that depending on mood, this can be better background music than something to actively engage with, but it works well like that too. Underworld come through with a really cool project here, and I could see it growing on me more, I will almost certainly be coming back to this in some certain settings.

I’m at a 4 – closer to a 3.5 bumped up to a 4, but a 4 regardless. I always think it’s a little hard to write about an electronica album, since it really does usually just boil down to enjoyment of the beats, and in this case, I generally enjoyed them. This sounds exactly like what 1996 techno / electronica should be, and I don’t think there’s ever a bad track here. There’s certainly ones that didn’t click for me, like “Confusion the Waitress”, “Air Towel” & “Blueski”, but they’re not bad, just actively a little more stagnant & boring than the rest of the album. So, why only a 4 then? Well, it’s long as hell, for one. A lot of these could’ve been trimmed a bit – it’s not necessarily an issue in the moment while you’re just grooving & moving around, so much like a Nintendo game, the flaws aren’t really there until you hold it up to a microscope and take a deep, deep analysis. There’s sections of each track that just sit in a general soundscape just a little too long, and those slowly build up over the course of the album, even in a subconscious space. Like I said though, it’s not that noticeable. The big thing, at least for my ears, is that this album just gives a little too much space to the vocals, as opposed to letting the instrumentation shine at its brightest. A lot of these tracks don’t have super compelling lyrics, so giving the vocals as much space as they do, where they sort of trim around the instrumentals & the entrancing effect of the beats, makes it feel like the album can’t decide quite what niche it wants to fill. Don’t get me wrong, the balance between the vocals / instrumentals is still pretty correctly skewed towards the instrumentals, but when it’s noticeable that the vocals have center stage, it’s really noticeable, and drags down the album for me, since they just don’t blend as well on a number of tracks. When this album is rolling, though? This is damn good electronica. It’s much more into the trance / techno side of things, as opposed to the more dance-y / plunderphonics stuff we’ve generally been getting, but I’m not complaining about that one bit. Even for the first 32 minutes of this album, over the course of 2 rather long tracks, I thought that the layering and progression throughout both of them was incredibly satisfying. The plunk on a lot of the percussion / bass / synths here is super effective, especially with headphones in. When this album gets into a zen state, it’s very easy to feel, and those moments are where this whole thing shines. Big shoutout to “Rowla”, by the way. I want to really harp on the last track, “Stagger”, because I have a very strange comparison I wrote down, and yet it’s one that I think works – “This feels like if R.E.M. made an album like Kid-A, but chose to base it off of Kraftwerk’s electronica style.” The vocals throughout this album, even when they’re not really blending into the soundscape, do feel just a little bit like Michael Stipe. “Stagger”, with the way the synth melodies go, really feels like a sort of modern take (for 1996) on Kraftwerk’s general 70s style. It’s a bit washed away by choosing to end the album on some remarkably annoying drums, but regardless, I think it’s a super cool closer, and I’d kind of love to hear an entire album in that style, albeit with more polish. Hopefully, something like that is on the list. Overall, then, I did enjoy this. It’s certainly long at 73 minutes, but it’s never ever sonically boring & it’s always competently passable at its worst. For me, there’s moments that are more stale than others, but it all boils down to taste. I don’t quite hear some of the bigger acclaim this album seems to have gotten, but I can understand why it did, especially for 1996. I don’t think it’ll ever hit a 5 for me, but I like it enough where I think a 4 is pretty deserved.

The first songs are too long and combine too many ideas but the rest is awesome. I really enjoyed it. Perfect for relaxing and drifting aaround as in sound.

Whoaa mama this caught me by surprise! I was thinking it would be some '90s nostalgia for a few minutes but ultimately leave me ready for it to hurry up and end. Au contraire mon frère! This was incredible start to finish. Only thing holding it back from being 5 stars is I realize 85% of the time I won't be in the mood for this kind of music but it's just so perfect when you're ready for it! Maybe I'm being too precious about my 5 stars but this is riiiiight there. AND, totally justified long tracks which can sometimes be a drag but in this case, Underworld brought the goods and kept layering and taking me down a road I loved going down. Great listen, the '90s rule.

Electronic music at its finest

7.5/10 Very interesting techno album. Some hits, some misses, but overall I enjoyed the projects. Probably not going to listen to in full again, and I’d just go back to the songs I liked. Had my head boppin to Banstyle and Juanita. Despite being long tracks, they were my favorite on the project. The others felt more of droning but not bad by any means. Having O my really heard Born Slippy before this I was expecting an assault on my ears, but this is actually a really nuanced album. It's almost like jazz for racers. Wicked.

I gave this a couple of listens before deciding that while it's a pretty good example of electronica, I don't like it enough to want it in my collection. Best enjoyed as background music I guess.

It’s a difficult album to rate. It’s too long and some of the tracks don’t know where they’re heading. However, it’s important, it is self assured, and it’s good on a purely sonic level.

As with a lot of the classic electronic albums on this list, this felt overly long, which makes sense at a time when the main output for producers was 12" singles, not albums. The pop/rock constraints of fitting 12 songs on one 45 minute LP were irrelevant to an electronic act in the mid 90s. I'd love a version of this that was 35 minutes long. That said, this was fun and it sounded great. The last few tracks brought in some variety.

This album goes so hard. I never listened to Underworld or much house music at all but I'm such a sucker for the effortless gothic cool of tracks like Confusion the Waitress and Pearl's Girl. The first two songs are great but too long for me and it makes the album feel top-heavy whereas I think the most interesting ideas start with track 3.

Weird album cover. Kinda reminds me of Mezzanine by Massice Attacks? Feels like that font is very of time, specific to techno and rave— while also being oddly modern in its seriflessness. Title kinda doesn’t make sense to me? But I like the sound of the word “infant” in the context. 1 Yo okay ask me how I feel about this song after like the first 12 seconds and I’d be all like “well the drums panned echoes really tickles my brain and I like the metric modulation but this is kinda emblematic of a techno sound I think has aged really poorly, just not enough subfrequencies so everything sounds kinda tinny and/or washed out” and then WHAM the kick and bass kick and I’m all like wow wtf how have I not heard this record before this is inSANE! Love how this builds, it’s not quite as metrically advanced as it might seem because the downbeats are still hit pretty hard every 8 bars or so, but the little bits of syncopation and rut humid distance are great. The hat that comes in the right ear eventually is mixed a little too harshly, but it’s balanced out by the addition of a ride in the left and a center kick— super tasteful all together. And layers just keep getting added, it’s such a wild fusion of space-age 90s krautrock poeticisms and monotoned robot voice with a proper dance floor 4/4, and that synth that dances over it all YO GUITAR wow dude this track is so patient, those chords sound so good and only kick in like 4 minutes in— of course, that’s only like a fourth of the song, isn’t it? I am MAD I have never listened to this before fucking WOW. Really really like the lyrics, feel like poetry. I never understand when people call this kind of techno repetitive, it just feels like a fundamental misunderstanding of the point of layered instrumentals like this. The implication that change is music value is contrary to like all pop theory, and yet. Word to Andy Warhol. Getting pretentious, lemme get back to the music. Love how the vocals’ melodrama seems to naturally lead the instrumental correspondingly more gothic areas. Synth sound around 9:20 is fucking nasty bro, serrated af. Cacophony of percussion is auditory crack for me. Rave aesthetics are leaned into without ever feeling overdramatized or otherwise heavy-handed (subtle rave music feels like an oxymoron, but this at least treats the concept as possible lol). Ambient theory is allowed by a simple two chord pattern puts its feet up for a bit while the percussion rests. Vocals return; I had almost forgotten they had been here at all, so thoroughly immersed was I in the development of the song. It’s a track of movements, leitmotifs, and composed tones. Feels very intentional, with an immense amount of control and taste. Chip-tuned vocal sample listing colors kinda gives Board of Canada or the Orb vibes. After 16 minutes of patient development, a fade-out is very earned. Crazy good track. 2 No WAY is this dreamy LTJ Bukem-ass liquid d+b the follow up to the previous track!!! The atmosphere! Good god!! I am so mad this record has escaped my clutches until now this is so good. Water level music in a video game about hacking. The vocals really add something unique though— it’s one thing to have this gothic, new wave sort of delivery, but such an abstract narrative is outlined perfectly by occasion bleeps and bloops, the frenetic drums, and splashes of heavily effected guitar. I want to sit in a conversation pit with this song playing. It is so gently insistent, the two chords a pendulum back and forth— tension, resolution, tension, resolution. Hypnotic, especially when other chords start being altered around the five minute mark, prompting the drums to slowly dissolve and what sounds like the sounds of a factory floor to take their place. And this acoustic guitar is. So dope! Very Beck. When the percussion re-emerges, it’s more trip-hop, downtempo and crunchy. The skittering of the earlier jungle sound is now embodied by the acoustic guitar, and a really gentle pad brings it all together. Love this part, and love the vocals coming back in, great to juxtapose both sonic halves of the song with the vocals as the common denominator. With the brands and drug references I def see the comparisons to best poetry for the lyrics— they’re good, but wish the stanza repeated for the final bit of the song had a bit more semantic umph somehow. Hrm the dissonant sine-y keys solo kinda loses me, kinda sounds like Pac-Man having acid flashbacks. It isn’t there long, though, and we’re right back to the perfect guitar/pad/drums concoction. Seriously magic. Last two minutes fuck, majorly groovy. Do feel like a fade-out wasn’t necessary, kinda cheap— but then again, kind of a cheap piece of critique on a quarter-hour song 3 Now we’ve got an Air bass line over hard techno 4, really cool. God these vocals are so close and intimate, super cool. Weird vocal sample, kinda Kraftwerky? You’ll never believe this— very cool! I’m just so interested in the choices made in instrumentation, all three songs feel like they have such unique DNA— makes for a really strong album experience. Vocals and lyrics have a bit of a post-rock feel, don’t they? More of a Scottish accent and I’d be listening to Arab Strap. Some breakbeat in snare ghost notes that dance around the 4/4 pulse. God this song is just COOL! Psychedelic as all hell. Huh kinda ends abruptly— even some reverb woulda worked, just feels like it pauses lol. Still, great song, total journey. 4 Tsalright, like just kinda drives a groove into you. More straightforward rave, which is fine— they’ve just set such a bar for invention and experimentation, feels like this doesn’t clear it 5 Yeah baby now we’re back, percussion on this so so cool, that breakbeat feel with a pseudo half-time over crunchy synths feels so epic. Music to hack into a government computer for sure. Vocals are a little drab on this, but the song grows into itself. Felt like the brighter pad around 4:30 was important in helping the vocals click for me. Length of the first three tracks means I was kinda surprised when this so suddenly faded out, felt like it had more to give. 6 Oo fun little bouncy melody, kinda braindancey? The genre fusion is really dope, really does feel like they drew a little bit from every electronic subgenre under the sun. Ik it’s rave, but woulda loved if this track stayed on the floor rather than adding an up-beat snare, because the sound really lends itself to that techno feel— it’s aight though. Vocals have a bit more pitch and control than normal, which is cool. Really like “Bunny girl, happy shopper / Bouncing ball, telephone dial” both in delivery and simple sonics. Very hypnotic track. Good pacing, feels like it comes to a natural conclusion. 7 Guitar’s back, love the chop— nice little ambient direction, a bit like if Steve Gunn were remixed? Good color, doesn’t overstay its welcome, but both this and Rowla feel a bit like interludes to me, and that’s a little indulgent give they account for a fourth of the tracklist. Not too mad though— I wouldn’t skip them, so. 8 Vocals and lyrics feel more essential than ever. This one’s instrumental feels artsier than ever— could be a cover of an alternate universe Pink Floyd track. Lyrics are weirder, though. I like this song, like it’s genuinely good, but the first three tracks had such insane inertia that I feel the second half of this record has allowed to peter out a bit. I like the drums’ boomy crunchiness, very unique mix. Good energy. Just feel the record as a whole is a little top-heavy.

Of course it's "Born Slippy" that I remember most - Trainspotting being the culprit for that. But this record sounds like late nights or early mornings at Playground on Amherst street in Montreal. It's got that "anyone can move to this" vibe that spurs memories of fun-fur covered walls and smoky, dark rooms filled with people dancing with cigarettes hoisted in the air. I had a boyfriend that would call the red hot ember of a cigarette "the heater" - precisely because it could be used to heat up hash. I'm not sure I would like to re-enter those rooms, but I like the fact that I lived through a time when I spent a fair bit of time there.

Absolutely perfect work music. Perfect for anything else? I don't know, today I was working. Does it deserve a spot on this list? I think albums that represent the highwater mark for a genre should be on this list -- which I think this album arguably is. I'll be back another day to listen in different circumstances.

Top tier techno.

I happily set off on an Underworld adventure yesterday, and emerged to the sound of my wife asking what all this horrible noise was. It's like a dream now. I can't tell you exactly what happened. I think I was happy then.

Perfect album to be doing yardwork with, I pulled so many weeds and grooved out.

Reminds me a lot of Kraftwerk. And I really like Kraftwerk.

This is a super cool album, especially for the period in which it was made. They manage to bring a lot of the genres that were popular in EDM at the time together and make something that flows seamlessly. It's not easy to keep my attention all the way to the end of an album like this, but this one really is good to the last drop 4/5

Probably the best techno/electronica album I've had on this generator. I mean.... It's still techno.... But it would be good background music to work to, which is what I did today. Favourite songs: Air Towel, Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love, Confusion the Waitress, Pearl's Girl Least favourite songs: Stagger 4/5

This one took me some analysing to realise how good this album is. I was about to dismiss it as some random Techno album and lump it with a the other few Electronica albums I've had already. Upon further reflection, though, it's a lot more complex than I originally thought. I'm not a massive fan of albums that require me to actually think about why it's good, I'd rather it just sound good at first listen. In my far prom professional opinion, those sort of albums sometimes come off as pretentious and annoying. Not quite sure why this one is an exception, but I enjoyed it. It still has some of the generic themes of Techno albums (prime example goes to Pearl's Girl - loved the pace and energy it brought) but it also incorporated elements of rock as some New Wave stuff that go underappreciated. It started of slow, with the first two songs being way longer than they deserved to be, but after that it picked up massively. Sure, it was repetitive, but I've yet to find a Electronic album that isn't.

Very fun to listen to! It might have been just the distraction I needed today or maybe I will pursue their future albums. Either way a worth while album on the list!

A 16 minute song to start the album followed by a 15 minuter? Shortest song is 3 minutes? I knew I was going have a good time with this one. Normally I think most electronic albums start to sound the same, but each song had its own identity and found myself grooving from start to finish.

From the first track I’m back in a sweaty club in Edinburgh. Reaching for the volume as it progresses, man this is good. ….. Ok, I realized that about 3/4 of the way in I might be ready for a break. Solid techno and sets the stage for the period but likely I’ll only return to cherry pick tracks #1 for sure is my standout.

I love whatever sub-genre this is, I thoroughly enjoyed and wasn't bored one bit. 4.5/5 Standout track: - Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love 4.5/5: 11:31 onwards, felt like I was ascending.

I... enjoyed this. I wasn't expecting to, but I kind of got swept away by the textures and the repetition. why I liked this more than almost every EDM album I've heard, I can't say. But something about this one grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

I don't know what y'all are talking about because this album slaps. From the opening track and especially in 'Pearl's Girl' I was lovin the 90s club vibes. It wasn't just generic techno club music. It was actual creative Electronica. And one version of this album even has 'Born Slippy', which kinda makes up for everything.

At first I wasn't feeling this cause I wasn't in the club. But then by the end I wanted to be in the club

This one surprised me in a good way. First time heard it. Very cool. Would be great to listen to at a club or on a road trip. Dug the vibe. Back half is so-so but first half is strong. Will listen again.

Pearl's Girl made it onto the Saint soundtrack. I dunno about this one. I think it finished stronger than it started.

this fucks, theyre like a better Kraftwerk, i bet this is massively influential for a bunch of famous edm/trance/dance artists. can find lots of similar sounds

Thoroughly enjoying. Suprised to do so. Its so pleasant to listen to. It blends back, it blends forward, it stands out, it quietly nestles in your thoughts, its really interesting. I can imagine listening to this for multiple hours of activities around the house, and while driving and while working and while cooking. Yes, its enjoyable. high 4 stars.
