Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Without Born Slippy, this album is a two-star exercise in techno excellence. With the deluxe edition (including Born Slippy), this album is a heraldic 4 star affair. I prefer the deluxe.

Wooooooooow! I knew about Underworld, and in fact have seen them live before, but had never heard this album. It's magnificent--really takes you on a journey.

ah the cozy days of the mid nineties when techno-fascism was still a far-off dystopia we read about in books and watched in movie theaters. love it.

Brilliant

First Underworld album I listened to and a big intro to the 90s electronic scene. Being someone who focuses on beats and riffs and doesn't need lyrics to really make sense, it was great for me. Enough variation and catchiness to listen all the way through, and spurred me to listen to the rest of Underworld's ouvre.

Interesting structure for an album to start with two epic long songs, then the rest be much shorter, but it works. The first track especially was a real banger. Huge beats throughout, kept my attention for the whole 70 something minutes, which is impressive given how rarely I listen to this sort of music.

A driving dose of hypnotic electronica where trance-like beats and mumbled poetry create something both danceable and deeply strange.

After I saw the movie Trainspotting and heard Born Slippy, Underworld became my #1 musical artist for a while in the 90s/early 2000s. I still have Juanita/Kiteless on my day-to-day running playlist and had Pearl Diver on high rotation for a while. Coming back to this music, I still really enjoy it even though it can be highly repetitive. My main criticism has always been that their tracks could be just a little bit shorter but when one comes on, you know you can settle in for a wee while before something new comes along. I reserve my 5-star rating for music that gets under my skin emotionally, so that leaves this album at a 4-star rating for me.

Some time ago, Apple Music suggested Stagger, the last title of this album, to me. It stood out as electronica because of the lengthy lyrics, a bit unusual for this kind of music. Their mix of electronica, ambient, techno, and prog house is unique. Even the longer tracks have a nice build-up.

Rating: 7.5/10 The first two songs are truly incredible. The songs slowly build to make something very unique for the electronic genre, it's like progressive electronic music with a great melody. The rest of the album is still good but not nearly as good as the first two songs.

C o o l

Took a while but I'm there. Only knew of Born Slippy, which admittedly isn't even on the original album so I instead focussed on the expanded version to include this. I loved the opening moments of it as a kid but hated the hard dance beats it turned into so put this kind of music aside for the next 10 years. Returning over 20 years later and I can appreciate this album for what it is. It's a shame the list owner never seems to have expanded from early electronica, there are tonnes of electronica artists that should be on this list, Jon Hopkins, Autechre, Floating Points, Squarepusher, Ross from Friends etc. Regardless it's still good to be forced to go back to where all this began. You can hear shades of some of those bands in this. A solid, if drawn out release. Trim the fat and it's an easy 5*

In the 21st century, hypnotizing background music has a place, and this is a brilliant example of that music.

Overlong but there's a bunch of great stuff here, doesn't sound as dated as many of their peers

listened while working and it really did it for me

Industrial, warehouse vibes, mixed with drum and bass, fitting of their band name. Would be interested to hear their newer stuff to see if it holds up today. Best: Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love Worst: Air Towel

Ah yes...mid-1990s, the album nearly fills a CD. It's a bit long. But that said, this is quite a varied collection of songs, varying from pretty techno-focussed stuff to softer, more introspective tracks. I prefer the more techo tracks, but in general I liked the album. May add to my collection.

Cool but didn't grab my attention (while my attention was distracted with work).

Very cool! Didn’t know it yet!

ambient and slightly minimalist breakbeat goodness. deep pads are paired with infectious drum loops and strange samples. another album i found pretty entertaining, but there's a few tracks that drag on, and some tracks feel like a single loop or riff played over and over for like... 5 minutes. nevertheless it's very solid especially if you're a y2k aesthetic autist like me.

Fun techno frel

Chill and trippy

90's electronic music, my love.

Nice find, definitely needs more listens

My Beosound liked this album.

One of the last commentators wrote, does anyone like techno? Well, me for example. I'm glad to have been at one of the last Love Parades. But this album is not techno. It's far too slow for that. Yes, it's not even trance. It's electronic music. A bit psychedelic. It sounds like Chemical Brothers, sometimes like The Prodigy, then again like Trent Reznor. I liked it. The album won't be one of my top favorites either. But I will certainly listen to it again. 4/5

Sounds pretty timeless. Loved Underworld back in the day.

first listen there is something so underground about this, like a basement club for skater kids but its in the UK

This album has moments of straight techno which melt into new wave and atmospheric rock. At times, the album is danceable and at others, ponderous. The way that the music constructs and deconstructs is interesting and adds to the simmering quality of some of the tracks. Overall, really enjoyable if a touch too long

I've listened to Dubnobasswithmyheadman before, but it has been so long I forget what my impressions of it were. This album is from two years later. Immediately thrown into a stomping DnB track that gets your head and body moving. Layer upon layer being added to this through the first couple of minutes. So far, I'm all about it and only getting better through the 6 minute mark. Fantastic background music for writing code or studying, or for flailing your body around a murky basement club in a drug induced haze. Barnstyle / Slappys Curry is a very different song in tone. This one is almost refreshing in its clarity and brightness. Parts of it feel like taking off in an airplane and erupting through a ceiling of clouds. FFFFF Rowla starts out so benign, but just continues to pile on into a banger. Perhaps I'm simple minded, but this does it for me. Repetition of the vocal on Pearl's Girl reminds me a lot of a song off the Fatboy Slim album we reviewed a few weeks back. Song is a jam as well. I'm totally immersed at this point. Some interesting range shown through the back half between Stagger and Blueski. The first of which is an epic album conclusion and the latter which is mostly an experimentation in instrumental looping that feels much more organic than the rest of the album put together. This was a fantastic listen and I'll definitely be back. While I enjoyed the variation, this album did lose some steam at points. This is a very high 4 edging on 5 territory in my book.

Not the hugest fan of straight up techno, but it certainly helped me crush some spreadsheets! Definitely repetitive (by nature), but I actually enjoyed many stretches of this album. I think the vocals, while not bad, detracted from the album. IT feels like the vocals are just trying too hard to be edgy and cool (not unusual for the 90s). Can't say I would listen to this one again, but I wouldn't be mad if Underworld came up on this list again. Low 4 when doing tedious computer work, probably a 3 in most other atmospheres.

That album was pretty awesome. These British techno/electronic albums are always so hit or miss, and this was was like 90% a hit the whole time. There were times when the beats and effects got a little repetitive and songs drew out. But overall I really enjoyed the sounds. The 2 best songs were the first and the last which are always a good way for an album to be sandwiched. The only thing keeping this from a 5 is there were 2 songs that were kind of misses, and some that were just too drawn out.

Reeeeeeeaaaaaallllllyyyy not up for it at first but it was actually pretty good

The kind of electronic music I usually listen to. Never listened to one of their albums before, I used to listen to their anthology

I enjoyed it. I think it's one of those albums you have to be in the right kind of mood for. I expected it to be very 'samey' but it didn't feel like that at all. Absolutely loved a couple of tracks.

I really digged it.

A great band, a banging album and one of the best album names on the list. Saw these guys in Paris once and the were facemeltingly good. Admittedly I'm their demographic as an 80's born Brit who loves electronic music so I'm not objective. Love their energy, the driving rhythms ands had this on a loop pretty much all day. Looses a star because I understand it's appeal isn't universal.

Excelente disco para "irse"

Yes, very good for its genre.

Fantastic mind melting electronic album

Usually I get a bit sick of Drum and Bass for a long album, but this one was varied enough for me to really vibe with. 3.5/5

Really great EDM, made for excellent work background music

The length of this album scared me, but I wound up liking this one much more than I expected. It's definitely background music, but it's good background music.

So…this can’t be a five star album because it is (let’s face it) a bit of a one trick pony (compare with Barking as a reference point). But fuck. What a one trick.

A little bit too long, but given the genre it's kind of typical. At least the songs were way more engaging than I thought they were going to be.

NEED MORE BORN SLIPPY. Where's the damn reissue?? I need this whole album played at some sketchy, dark warehouse show on repeat.

loved this album. super chill, nostalgic, listenable

Okay. I liked some of the songs on this album. Has a fairly modern sound despite being from 1996. This is a random album that I have really liked.

Solid tunes for a dance act I only knew from one song…techno for background.

Amazing. Next time I need to lock in and grind this album is up to bat.

Tuc tuc

Early EDM? Great for focusing while working, but I'm not sure that's what it was intended for.

It's techno so it's very repetitive, but I really go into it

Enjoyed this more than expected! Can hear the direct lines to contemporaries The Prodigy and Aphex Twin. Enjoyably lengthy meditations on the hypnotic slow evolution of a beat.

I was really vibing until the person started singing. Still inducing swaying in me.

This goes fucking HARD

Second Toughest in the Infants is the fourth album by British electronic music group Underworld. The group expanded on the development of their progressive sound, which is electronic, techno, house, breakbeat, and downtempo. But it truly is a chill-out album with the ability to go back and forth between house beats with decent amount of bass, and moments of calming, ambient soundscapes. There's an overarching groove to the tracks that keeps the party going. I listened to this while working but it could - and needs - to be listened to in other settings. This is a critically acclaimed album that is viewed as the group's peak, and was certified gold in the UK and almost so in the US. I would listen to this album again and I recommend it.

I've heard about Underworld, hadn't really listened to them before. I definitely dig this though. Some very cool techno with forays into jungle and ambient. Probably a bit over long, but not sure where I'd make cuts lol. It feels like a 4 with room to grow, gotta check out more Underworld now.

On first listen I'd have rated this 2 or 3 at best. Due to a disrupted and broken listening session first time round I returned a couple of weeks later and listened properly in one sitting, this time with a decent pair of cans. It transformed the experience and immediately elevated this album to 4*

Good underworld album I haven’t listened to before. Started off strong and faded a little toward the end. But still a solid 4 star.

Listen at 7/02/2024

Some of the songs sound like the nightclub scene in any late 90's movie, which isn't a bad thing. The aforementioned tracks are broken up by slow, ambient, and almost melancholic tracks. It's very interesting, and there's a lot to like here.

Different. Deserves another listen

Tandon Scale Rating: 4 Standouts: Rowla, Juanita, Pearl’s Girl Foot Notes: 1 I don’t know what happened to me but electronic music does something to my brain 2 i am very surprised by how much I’m enjoying it perfect album for getting a lot done at work Would I Listen Again: yes yes Album Cover Rating: (1-5) 2 Album Name Rating: (1-5) 3.5

Harvat ovat julkaisseet yhtä eheitä teknolevyjä kuin Underworld. Toimii todella!

Good background music to work to but have no idea why this would be on here over something like Discovery by Daft Punk. Rating: 2.4

Enjoyed it more than I expected considering I’m not a big ambient guy.

great electronic band you may remember from that one song from Trainspotting (not included here, but it does have the "crazy crazy" song, Pearl's Girl). nice low-on-vox album for background/concentrating at work

Wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I thought it sounded great sonically.

Every song was cool except confused waitress. Idk much about the history of edm but this probably played a roll. They made this shit in 96 on Windows NT probably.

Oh, this was excellent for work. Could also be in the background if you're just chilling or reading.

Starts as some solid early EDM then transitions almost into some lo-fi. All in all better than some albums I've been hearing lately.

Takes me back to a time where the internet was new and hackers sat in dark rooms listening to music like this.

I'm digging the thumping, cool drum licks and the occasional ambient airiness.

I was surprised to see two 15 minutes + tracks to start, but the first one was quite listenable. “Pearl’s Girl” and “Stagger” are also good. Hyde’s voice is a limiting factor, but the only other option would have been bringing in outside vocalists, which could have caused logistic issues when touring. Underworld were a cutting-edge electronic/dance/techno band who weren't known much outside of the UK beyond their big hits. While they were definitely influential, I’m not sure that they warrant a second LP on 1001.

Takes me back to the 90s when raves were all the, well, rave. More of a triphop and shoegazer guy, I took occasional forays into techno/electronic music and Underworld were one I enjoyed.

Oli kyl mielenkiintoista, pitää laittaa lisääkin kuunteluun tolta. 4/5

Techno!

Nice transitions, enjoyed the listen. Not quite a 5. Some vocals, mostly different beats, you can vibe to.

It speaks of a time (mid/late 90s) and a place (uk club). I find example of that exact thing but it doesn't feel ground breaking or revalutionary.

Hit a great vibe for me, the day I listened to it. I'm a fan of the electronic style and the album was really solid all around.

Second best of their albums, too. Still enjoyable.

90's techno mais assez frais quand même

Qué chulada, qué vibra.

Loved it ! 4*

some of the better techno to cross this thing in a minute Sidebar, there's a million techno releases from the 90s, but afaict *nothing at all* from that EDM boom in the early '10s on here. Like sure I don't think fuckin skrillex really did "albums" as such at the time he hit the mainstream, but like there was a whole era of stuff that lasted *years*, that was a big enough deal that pop artists started biting from it en masse, that’s being completely glossed over. And fuck knows I’m not itching to hear dubstep again for a good long while, but the double standard is glaring

I know I'm going to regret rating this so high in about 20 years, by which time this album will sound laughably dated. Oh well.

I've never heard of Underworld before (although I'm pretty sure I've heard their song "Born Slippy"), and I don't think I've ever listened to a full techno/house album before either (is Moby's Play considered techno?). I really enjoyed listening to this album. It was really pleasant to listen to, and I loved that the longer songs would establish a few musical elements, and then build on them. I know there's more techno albums on this list, and I'm excited to be assigned more of them.

Favorite was Banstyle / Sappys Curry

A monster of progressive trance. Moody and mighty. I feel if one Underworld should be chosen this iscthe right one. Sounds even better at night.

Not too crazy about the opening two tracks that take up almost half of the album’s runtime, the other tracks I find more interesting. Beautiful final track too. After some deliberation I’ll say that this is good :-)

Along side the Chemical Brothers, Underworld were bringing the indie kids to the race with some excellent albums. Hard and abrasive rock influenced electronic brilliance.

Hadn't listened to this one before, really enjoyed it though. More so on the second listen; on the first everything melded together a bit. I think Dubnobasswithmyheadman is a better album, and probably a better introduction to Underworld. That's on the list though, so I'll get that eventually, right?...RIGHT???

Another fun electronic album. I think we got one from these guys already too. The second song Banstyle has the same beat as the hold music on phones. Very chill album with some highs and a few lows too. I'm glad this on here.

Only ever heard underworlds key hits, really enjoyed this album great mix of dance and ambient songs. Up their with the best techno Iv heard.

Underworld has been sited as an influence by a lot of video game composers and yeah that influence can be felt.

If you told me that the first two tracks are well over 15 minutes of electronic music, and that I would actually like it, I wouldn't have believed you. But I did. I found them fascinating pieces of work, deeply enriching and numerous themes in both. The shorter songs were okay as well. I am not that big of a fan of electronica, but this I quite enjoyed. The beats and counterpoint in each song worked well. The vocals were not so great, but I kinda tuned those out after a while. Still, not bad.

Oh good. Just when I was questioning the amount of garage rock in the 1,001 list and saying it was only rivaled by electronica, here comes the first of three electronica albums in a row. Granted, this album isn't part of the excess. I thought it was pretty good and inventive. Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream of Love was a very cool opener; well, the last one was okay but the first two had some awesome beats (and fitting vocals). The second long and winding track didn't really do it for me but I was definitely bopping along to a couple songs - Rowla and Air Towel. Pearl's Girl was pulsing. The final two tracks reminded me of Steven Wilson's stuff - Blueski was very guitar-oriented and cool while Stagger felt prog rocky (with more subtle guitar and drums). Solid album all and all.

Sounds great

4 stars. Great EDM.

Some excellent techno that only needed to be the first two tracks.

This takes me back to the days of Orbital, Juno Reactor, Crystal Method, Antiloop, etc. I never got into Underworld back then, but now I wish I had. Great album, maybe not consistent all the way through, but there are some very strong beats on here.

Wicked

A decent enough listen that I went back for a second hearing. I knew of Underworld through the track Born Slippy which is not on this album, but the music is in keeping, if lacking a bit in the weight of the sound. Still, good as an ambient soundtrack and I imagine awesome if you are pilled up.

Classic album from the mid '90s. Block Rocking beats... ..to make a chemical analogy

No surrender eight track bender. Music you have experiences to. I reckon the youtube comments section is legendary for some of these. 4.5/5

Hit me right in the chops. Some crazy brats they are. Struggles a bit in the middle but makes up for it just for being so out there with the sounds. Imagine it would be even better live

Well well well, expectations low but boy I was wrong. Dark and stormy and just what I needed to get me through on a rainy Sunday. Shades of darkside followed by hacienda soundtracks and then back into the deep depths of the underworld. This is about as close to a 5 as I'll get without giving one. 4.499999/10

The entire album made me feel like I was part of that rave scene in The Matrix Reloaded, where humanity is still seshing it in the underworld despite the dystopian terror that exists on the surface.

такой афекс твиновый :))

House music

A completely new band / album for me, and I liked it a lot! The heavier drumstep parts were a bit too much for me on a Tuesday morning, but the synthier elements were lush!

Is that EDM? I’m not cool enough to know but I think it was. It was fun. Good work music. Peppy but background.

Lovely - a nice throwback to a CD that kept me company for quite a while

Much closer to what was actually going on in the 90's than any of the indie rock rubbish which has been on this list. Still doesn't make a great album but consistently decent tunes. 3.6

Started off like some more Need for Speed movie music but displayed some enjoyable electronic throughout the rest

I like cool 90s Techno and I don't care who knows. Great music to work to, and probably dance to? Not great if you want to do a singalong.

I ended up enjoying this quite a bit. First song I was a little iffy on but the other more laidback tracks are really good and pretty impressive for 1996. Lots of danceable tunes on here which I had a good time with. 7/10

It's really good and I think it's actually the best from all the electronic albums I've heard while doing this challenge (including Chemical Borthers, Fatboy Slim, Milo) - it's the most complex one while at the same time not annoying and very much enjoyable. My only issue with this is that it's a bit too long, especially for such a repetitive kind of music. I'll be definitely going back to this one. 4/5

First two tracks go insane. I like this a lot more than dubno. Less focus on the vocals make this great.

Cool cool

This album is really quite varied compared to most other electronic music of the time. The fact that they have a dedicated singer kind of sets them apart too. Very versatile sound. Electronic anthems. Favorite track is "Pearl's Girl," probably because it sounds the most like "Born Slippy."

Good stuff

Gotta listen to the re-issue for that sweet sweet Born Slippy. NUXX. In my top five for songs to dance to: smoothly with the iconic opening chords, then all out crazy when the kick drum comes in. Singing along to the rambling stream of consciousness lyrics. Rez is also an all time great electronic track. As for the songs on the original disc, I'm not familiar with them, but the outro to Sappy's Curry had me up and dancing. Otherwise good background music, songs for soundtracks.

fun. loved air towel

Sounded like it belonged in The Matrix or a similar late 90's - early 2000's sci-fi type film. An overall fun listen.

Have you heard Underworld? This sounds exactly like Underworld sound.

Blueski- love the guitar melody, great change of pace Stagger- great sound vocal combo This was honestly better than I expected

the first track still has me 4 minutes in. though holy shit your first two tracks are combined almost a half hour!? Confusion The Waitress is a solid dub/jungle sound. Its a pretty inocuous album but I have been able to get some solid work done this morning.

pretty good, not really my genre but I can still appreciate the work that went into it, 7/10

Pretty good. Some forgettable lyrics most of a tracks are solid.

Based on my music genre preferences, I would have rated this 3/5, but that would have brought the rating down simply because I don't as often listen to this type of music. For what it's trying to be – techno, progressive house, etc. – I actually liked it quite a bit. Super easy to listen to while working, for example. Not too hectic.

I saw someone else doing this, and decided to keep a score like this as well: Quality of Album: 9/10 1001 album list worthy: 10/10 Personal enjoyment: 8/10 Juanita ; Kiteless ; to Dream of Love is the intense and powerful opener you'd want on any dance album. Followed up by ambient breakbeat of Banstyle / Sappys Curry as second song it almost doesn't get better in the genre. And that's the first half hour already filled. On the bonus CD is the song Cherry Pie and that might be the best Underworld has ever released.

Muy bueno

Rating: 7/10

It's hard for me to review techno / trance albums, but I really enjoyed this one. Never got bored with the long tracks. There's a lot going on in the first track, maintaining a mid-level energy. Second track is mellower, reminding of PS2-era loading screens, good for studying to. I like the echoey vocals, and how wild it gets in those last few minutes. Next track has a really sweet beat and gothic vocals. "Rowla" is a bit abrasive but still pretty cool. My favorite track is "Pearl's Girl." Crazy crazy crazy crazy crazy........... I love it so much. In "Air Towel", I really enjoyed the vocals, but I found the repetitive beat overstaying its welcome. "Blueski" is a bit of an oddball, but still pleasant. Thankfully this one did not go for more than 3 minutes. The final track, "Stagger", is my second favorite, which is more like synthpop, with orchestral vocals, mysterious lyrics, and heavy synths.

We get a lot of electronic music here on 1001albums, in all its forms. I actually like a lot of electronic music. My brother does it for a living, so I've heard a fair bit of it. But after a while, another techno or house album comes up and I can't help but let out a sigh. This one is really good, though. A full hour+ of really listenable and diverse music, from progressive house to drum and bass to a splash of ambient, none of it tiring nor ear splitting. The album starts out strong and never lets up. Beats are perfect, not hard on the ear for the most part. The compositions are smoothly sequenced and layered, with subtle little progressions that make each track more complex and interesting as it develops. Even the long tracks (which are series of songs that lead into each other), are a breeze to listen to. Lyrics are poetic, but on the abstract side. Vocal distortions, noise and guitar loops are used economically, to nice effect. It’s not all danceable, but there is a solid mix of the clubby and the more contemplative, which makes for a better overall listen. Bravo. Fave Songs: Banstyle/Sappy's Curry, Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love, Air Towel, Blueski, Rowla

Very good

Oh. Now this is cool. It didn’t keep same energy throughout but i liked it.

I really enjoyed this, haunted, the perfect blend of electronic and acoustic elements

Pure magic

Lovely!

Enjoyed it but maybe a little long

Liked this way better than Fat Boy Slim, a contemporary. Instrumentation was interesting enough, and the occasional lyric helps move it along.

Bangin

funky :)

P good

Iskreno dosta iznenađen ovim techno-nocturalno ambijentalnim izdanjem. Ma prva pjesma me je već uvela u album kako treba, a ostatak albuma je zadovoljavajuć. Atmosfera, beatovi, instrumentali su kvalitetni i mogu reći da ima jako dobrih prijelaza. Iznenađen sam iskreno.

Good techno sound. I like it! I had heard some of their other songs before.

I liked it, but it was too long for what it offered. That said, my favorite songs were the first two, 16 and 15 minutes each. I think I was feeling the music for the first half hour but by 70 minutes got tired of the minimal variety.

Super great for heads down music - aspects remind me of the matrix soundtrack

Awesome electronic album, not sure the exact genre, I guess Euro house? or rave? Either way it's a fantastic album with great repeating rhythms and very slow progressions. Very long tracks with a lot going on overall, but it's entrancing. True Feeling: 4.1/5

How have I missed this one? Never heard of it. And I love drum and bass. It’s very good.

I can hear the foundations of 2000s EMD and electronica in here. Liked

I appreciate they don't try to sing much on top of it. Last several minutes of banstyle/sappys currys are real good. Rowla--finally really danceable music Pearl's girl is undeniable. That bass drum drum.

Not bad progressive band

I feel like this is fucking sick but it's like a lot of different elements that were put together for born slippy. I'm really liking it though for a concentration album

This was fun. Their beats would do well at coachella

Havent listened enough yet

It was repetitive techno, but I actually kind of enjoyed it. Reminds me of Abby's lab on NCIS. I wouldn't want to overdo it, but I actually found this to be pleasant background music.

Cool, but fatigued

Back in 2004, I briefly went through a trance / techno phase, and one of my favourite atmospheric records was "A Hundred Days Off" by Underworld - a hypnotic Tech-Noir album that always got me into a dreamy mood. By comparison, "Second Toughest in the Infants" feels a bit disappointing. It's less repetitive, maybe, but also less minimalist, more cluttered. It's very good EDM, with more depth and complexity than most similar records ; a couple of tracks do have a nice trippy / futuristic vibe. But it also felt like the music was all over the place, never coalescing into a truly unique identity. A pleasant listen overall, but it never really leaves background music territory, so I most likely won't come back to it. 5/10

That was pretty good, reminded me of raves in the 90s

Welcome back to dad's techno-breakfast kitchen. I'll be head nodding my way through these absolute slammers while doing last night's dishes and drinking my first coffee. Fancy a 16-minute house odyssey while trying to fetch some cereal eh kids? No wait, come back.

Wild that this was 30 years ago. It’s fun, but it is very repetitive. Usually I don’t mind songs like that, but these hardly progress. Makes for some interesting background music though. 6/10

I must be in a good mood this month, because honestly, this album was a nice listen. It is not that out there, but it gets the basic electronic elements right. I'm sure this would hit mad on a late-night drive.

机器人来的

It's a good album, but I didn't find anything unique about it.

3 sterne

I love Born Slippy .NUXX, and was happy to hear Pearl's Girl from this album had a similar feel. The rest was decent.

Not a bad electronic album. Like all electronic albums, they get a bit repetitive after a while. 3/5

A solid electronic album. Really dug listening to this while making dinner. 3.2/5

Random thoughts: * This was definitely too cutting edge in 1996 to hit my musical radar. I feel like most people, it was Trainspotting that turned us onto Underworld and this type of music in general. * Some of it was quite trance and some was the base hitting dance music of the day. I thought this album had a nice flow even though the sounds morphed and changed. I could throw this one on again for sure.

Only half listened.

British electronica go brrr

Nice, vibey techno. Don't know if I'll be returning to it, but it is hypnotic and well produced.

Easy-listening electronic, offers some pretty smooth sounds and a pleasant dose of variety, but it is quite a *lot* and it's not the most engaging or exciting through all the tracks. It's addictive club music and a good ration of satisfaction

No. 404/1001 Juanita 2/5 (2x) Banstyle 3/5 (2x) Confusion The Waitress 3/5 Rowla 2/5 Pearl's Girl 2/5 Air Towel 3/5 Blueski 3/5 Stagger 3/5 Average: 2,6 Actually better then I expected after the first song. Still not really my thing.

Some good beats and vibes, but too repetitive to listen to as more than background music

Słaba techniawa

Blind album and artist. I feel like I'm trying to escape the matrix, but instead of it bring an oppressive human battery regime, its more mellow like a fun drug den where everyone gets high and we all coast through life Mellow and chill. 3

Mucho Techno! Demasiado largo y repetitivo si no estas acostumbrado a este estilo de musica, pero es buen album. Si te lo pones con alguna labor automatica y laboriosa no puedes parar 😅 el ritmo constante te incita a seguir 😁

Not bad, not very good. I think it's a travesty that there are no Yello albums on the 1001 list, but this made it.

A bit of vaguely soulless electronica - inoffensive but nothing to get particularly excited about.

I'm not a huge fan of this kind of music, especially on a regular Sunday whilst I'm sober. Seeing as the full version of this album is well over four hours long I DNF'd. That being said, the album itself was fine. Bizarrely long, but fine.

goeie tijd! ook nuchter op de zondag x

The biggest issue I have with techno, and electronica albums is the fact that almost every song is way too repetitive. While this is by design, since these albums are intended to be played in a sleazy 1990s dance club, it makes it difficult to genuinely rate these albums any higher than I give them. At the very least, this one was a bit more diversified, but it had no business dragging on the way it did. Favorite Track: "Banstyle/Slappy's Curry".

This was an alright electronic/house album from a DJ I have no knowledge of. Apparently has some hits though but not on here. It's a simple 3 stars for me.

My son has been exposing my to modern electronic music, but I still don't know shit about the genre. I simply haven't explored enough of the genre to know what defines excellence. What I do know is that I really grooved with this music. I probably needed some molly to truly appreciate, but sadly this isn't an option right now. Fun stuff.

This album wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be. Fully expected to give an over an hour long electronic album a 1 or a 2. It was still pretty repetitive but I enjoyed it more. Also the intro to Pearl’s Girl really reminded me of Treefingers by Radiohead.

Not for me but not bad

Bien, sonaba a nuevo en su momento.

I too was the second toughest in the infants. But then again I was home schooled.

Kind of a mixed bag with some to like and some to "meh." Certainly, everything was way too long ⭐⭐.75

Cool background music. I cant see myself sitting down with the LP and really pouring over everything and actively listening beyond the this. I'm sure this is great if you are at a live DJ set and everyone is dancing. Granted, this is better than a lot of what has been suggested in this genre thus far as well as out. I don't dislike it, I don't feel the need to ever purposely listen to this again either. 2.5 rounded up to 3 as a 2 would imply its bad, it isn't.

Lager, lager, lager

Pretty good

pretty good I suppose

couple things keeping this from a four really: there are as many songs where the vocals detract from the music as songs where they improve it it's too long and repetitive I remember not liking Underworld much/at all back in the day when people recommended them based on liking Daft Punk, Orbital, Etro Anime, Front 242, etc but I guess something shifted, I'm into this

Definitely listened to this in the wrong setting hahahaha it is notttt a gym album!! But it made me want to be at a rave + dancing/vibing. Good stuff, 7.5/10

I enjoyed it. Some slick, dark techno.

didn't expect this to be absolutely peak for studying. Incredibly locked in for the entire duration of this, will be listening again.

This is good, driving electronica, very beat-heavy. Not sure what sets this apart from others, though.

Final thoughts: not something I'll return to a lot but it's full of interesting ideas and I'm glad I listened ******************************************************************************* 8 tracks? this should be a breeze--oh god it's 73 minutes long --Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love...I could see myself really enjoying under the influence of the right substance --Banstyle/Sappy's Curry...dammit I'm digging these 15 minute tracks --Confusion the Waitress...solid vibe but I'm glad this is only half as long as the first two tracks --Rowla...generic night club stuff. probably great if the drugs are hitting --Pearl's Girl...what was once pretty expansive is now getting repetitive. maybe I'm just tired and should revisit in the morning --Air Towel...the hand dryers in the restroom that barely work? I like the first two tracks because they had a lot of variation despite being over 15 minutes long. Their shorter songs are entertaining but more repetitive --Blueski...hey, a three minute track! it's very repetitive --Stagger...could be a Radiohead song

6/10 - it's good but not Underworld's best

Ikke så Dakke-Dakket som jeg havde frygtet. Faktisk rimelig okay at have kørenede mens jeg arbejde.

As far as 90’s electronic tracks that involve randomly singing colours, I’ll still rank Aquarius and the colour Orange over Juanita and Green, Black, White, Grey, Red, Blue and Silver (which is just a shiny Grey). I was worried about the length of the album but it flowed fairly well. Pearl’s Girl was my favourite, had a good industrial feel to it, faint shades of Nine Inch Nails at times. It was a good listen but won’t work its way into my regular rotation. 3 stars

House music for a cocktail bar I'm not cool enough to be in

I enjoyed this more than I expected but its not something I will return to.

Not many banging beats instead, atmospheres and pulses and twitchy vocals. The soundtrack to a come down rather than a night out. Tracks that stretch out and give the ideas room to breathe

Some good jams otherwise alright. I kinda dislike the fusion aspect and think the genres are best left separate.

This was OK. It didn’t grab me in any way. I added “Blueski” to my Generator playlist.

Lots of cool noises from the boss of drums. Good to put on while you’re doing stuff.

Love to hear one track, but not an entire album

I was worried at first that this wasn’t going to work for me at all, but it improved over time. I got some elements of Prodigy, and some vaguely industrial moments that reminded me of my highschool CD collection. I really enjoyed “Stagger”, but didn’t need it to be 7+ minutes long.

Late night jet set radio future/ need for speed game 90’s club vibes.

In its best moments, like the last track, it evokes a kind of sad, unplaceable nostalgia. Unfortunately, most of the rest doesn’t evoke much more than mild boredom. Still, it’s never truly annoying. Confusion The Waitress, Stagger 3

Fine to have on in the background. I always feel like this kind of music must require the assistance of class As in order to properly tap into it. It's just a bit dull and repetitive otherwise. On the occasion they venture into writing an actual song it can be quite good.

Some cool sounds, dragged on a bit at some points however.

Did i just like a electronic album? Am i OK? What is wrong with me. Nearly every electronic album on this list has been some weird sci-fi soundtrack drum beat - but this actually used other instrumentation - some melody and some dance-ability. I'm oddly impressed.

Vieux électro quand même un vibe, je feel underground

God help me I liked it.

This was pretty good. It kinda sounds like a stripped-down techno. Favourite Track(s): Confusion The Waitress Least Favourite Track(s): Rowla

Random British electronica album example 300

Pretty cool, enjoyed it for the most part

can this be any longer? i didnt listen all the way through so i don't know if i'm qualified to give it a rating. i'm giving it a 3 to be safe. it wasn't bad

= the Beatles

Not sure how to take this one in. Do we need 15 min+ techno tracks? Weird way to start off the album. Almost didn't make it through which is a shame since the last track was actually really good. Giving some grace here because this isn't really my thing.

My wife told me to turn this album off because it was making her uncomfortable

This album isn't bad at all. I think it's just a little too long honestly, but I can imagine people actually playing this at techno raves (where they actually do the real dancing.) Not my favorite thing, but also not terrible. I do think the inconsistency with the album genre bothered me a little bit.

First time listen Good, hypnotic house music. I think the first two tracks are a little overly long but it kinda comes with the territory I suppose. Wouldn't have expected this album to be from 1996, sounds a few years ahead of its time. Fav Tracks: Juanita / Kiteless / To Dream of Love, Rowla Least Fav: Confusion the Waitress 3.5/5

2.5 (73:01, 8 tracks (bonus with 2 extra; Born Slippy and Rez, 94:36),4th album,1996) Electronica (techno, breakbeat) Singles "Pearl's Girl" "Rowla" "Juanita" (and "Born Slippy" sort of) Underworld, not to be confused with Undertones (1980, who were punk band also made this list), is British electronica. There’s not a lot to review here – it’s techno, it’s repetitive but that’s techno. It was designed to be dance music and as that it’s good. I’m not 100% it belongs on this list but I think it is important to show the progress of music. I don’t know if in 1996 this was much different from the rave scene I left behind in So. Cal in the early 90s? The name of the album derives from a comment made by Rick Smith's six-year-old nephew when asked on his progress at infant school (the level of schooling attended by four- to seven-year-old children in the United Kingdom). The re-issue featured the band's best-known single, "Born Slippy .NUXX". The album was remastered and re-released in November 2015 with deluxe and super-deluxe expanded editions. The album opens with the multi-song suite "Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love", which features all three parts intersecting each other at various points during the piece; hence, the use of colons instead of slashes in its name. A 16-minute opening track, often interpreted as a suite exploring vulnerability, isolation, and chaotic longing. It features abstract lyrics about broken windows, "thin paper wings," and emotional despair. Explores themes of fragility, isolation, and profound longing, with lyrics depicting scenes of desperation ("Bootleg babies," "Homeless strays") and a sense of being trapped behind glass. "Juanita" refers to Juanita Boxill, a member of the Tomato art collective associated with the band. The opening track for their tours in the late 90s A juxtaposition of urban chaos with personal, fragile emotions. The loungy, drum and bass track "Banstyle" follows, alongside its downtempo, half-speed counterpart "Sappy's Curry". A 15-minute electronic track. The title refers to the specific names of greyhounds. The names "Sappy's Curry," "Pearl's Girl," and "Born Slippy" were all taken from greyhounds that raced at an English stadium during a visit by the band. In that particular race, the greyhounds finished third (Sappy's Curry), second (Pearl's Girl), and first (Born Slippy). The song is an "epic journey" divided into two distinct sonic movements: Banstyle: Influenced by the mid-90s drum 'n' bass and jungle scenes, specifically artists like LTJ Bukem and Goldie. Sappy's Curry: Transitioning at roughly the halfway point, this section shifts into a heavily dub-influenced rhythm. It is characterized as more downtempo and sensual, featuring a prominent synth solo. The lyrics are stream-of-consciousness snippets often inspired by phrases overheard or seen by vocalist Karl Hyde during his walks through London. The rest of the record showcases advancements in the Underworld sound: both "Rowla" and "Pearl's Girl" feature club-ready abrasive beats and basslines, while "Blueski" and "Stagger" incorporate live acoustic guitar and light, melancholic arrangements, respectively. "Pearl's Girl" is one of the few Underworld songs to use breakbeats. Due to the success of the single "Born Slippy .NUXX", Second Toughest was re-issued with a bonus disc containing the single-only tracks "Born Slippy .NUXX" and "Rez"; Japanese editions also featured "Cherry Pie" and the "(Carp Dreams... Koi)" mix of "Pearl's Girl". The song titles "Sappy's Curry", "Pearl's Girl" and "Born Slippy" all come from the names of greyhounds from an English racing stadium. These greyhounds finished third, second, and first during Underworld's visit to the races. Anya Sacharow of Entertainment Weekly described the album as "no dumb-bass dance music", adding that Underworld "know how to expand the frenzy of techno and jungle and then retreat to an ambient cool". In 2015, the album was reissued on vinyl and 2-CD and 4-CD expanded editions. Highlighting alternate mixes, remixes and unreleased songs, the 4-CD version includes a full CD of variations of "Born Slippy .NUXX", from one of the song's earliest versions in 1994, up until its final form a year later (which is included here in its 1996 extended form). Favorite Song: Born Slippy which wasn’t even on the original cut but is the only track I recognized and I did like that song. 1. "Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love" 16:36 2. "Banstyle/Sappy's Curry" 15:22 3. "Confusion the Waitress" 6:47 4. "Rowla" 6:31 5. "Pearl's Girl" 9:36 6. "Air Towel" 7:37 7. "Blueski" 2:55 8. "Stagger" 7:37 Reissue bonus CD 1. "Born Slippy .NUXX" 11:40 2. "Rez" 9:55

You know the background music that’s playing in every movie fight scene set in a club? You know the one: Collateral, John Wick, Bad Boys, Blade, etc. That’s basically this album. Or at least one hour of its one hour and thirteen minutes. It’s background filler that occasionally pops up to be interesting and then dips back down into dull electronica. Still, it wasn’t inherently bothersome. Just boring. 2.5/5 rounded up to a 3.

01) Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love - 7,0 02) Banstyle/Sappy's Curry - 7,5 03) Confusion the Waitress - 7,5 04) Rowla - 6,5 05) Pearl's Girl - 7,5 06) Air Towel - 7,5 07) Blueski - 6,5 08) Stagger - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,06 (71/100) Current ranking:

Man there's a lot of electronica on this list. It's a unique feel.

I cannot believe I am writing this but Underground somhow made their 15 minute pieces work for me - or at least I thought I did until I realized their both had distinct breaks in them that signaled a change in the progression. In other words, these aren't really 15 minute long songs so much as a several small songs songs in a trench coat. While I wouldn't listen to this on a daily basis, I can see myself returning to this album. Best songs are Confusion The Waitress and Air Towel. 7/10, a real surprise.

Very smooth rhythms and arrangements set by engaging electronic beats. Great progressive sounds among a genre that I find typically boring and repetitive. The runtime was a little lengthy and the tracks after Pearl's Girl struggled to defend their inclusion on the album, but the first half was dynamic and complex enough to elevate the music above most other electronic music I've heard.

I like techno but not today

I warmed up to this music as I listened more. Good electronic music, but purely background music. Not bad.

Ble egentlig positivt overrasket, hadde jeg hatt tilgang på ulovlige rusmidler hadde den nok scoret høyere. Kule sampling muligheter

It's fine for 90s electronic music. Not really my style though.

Pretty good electronic music album.

The title of this record is pretty funny if you look up its meaning. I recommend doing so because it hints that the members of Underworld don't take themselves too seriously. This is well-constructed techno music from the mid-nineties. If I were listening to dance or hearing it in a DJ set, I'd probably get more out of it. There were many times that a segment of one of their songs would give me the funky stank-face. The production isn't quite as layered as I like electronic music to be, but it's not as overly compressed as much of it either. It's clear that Underworld was trying to make music that we can listen to here, and they largely succeeded. I even had to hit Symfonium's heart button for the second track, "Banstyle / Sappys Curry." I likely won't give this album another deep listen. It just didn't grab me. It might be nice for a late-night drive through the country or in the background at home. Only time will tell if I remember to put it on later, though. Three stars.

Having a lot of fun with this. I've never been a casual electronic listener, but I'm saving this album to return to. I liked the start of the second track sounding like rainbow road music

I’ve been a huge fan of electronic, but I liked this for the most part. It reminded me of music from the Matrix at times. I still don’t know that I’ll ever go back to it, but I enjoyed it more than most of the genre.

This is exactly the type of music I listened to when I studied in college, for that reason it holds a soft spot in my heart (weird, but true). If I didn’t have that experience, this may be a 2, but I have to give it a 3 because it really was enjoyable and easy focus music.

It's a decent electronica album; just not my genre

nice enough

I don’t think any song ever needs to be 15 minutes long. Even if it is tasty techno beats. 6/10

Beep boop beep i wanna die

I like Underworld. This was a little too much Underworld.

Great for a Dance party

ha zerst denkt ich wirds hasse. ähm? goht kinda hard de ersti track. ok dasch etz im ernst fun gsi de zwei track au! hey bin positiv überrascht, 90s electro selte miis aber isch mega churzwiilig gsi und upbeat aber au dunkelglichzitig. sehr cool. mit de gsungene sache hani wenig chöne aafange aber gstört hends nöd. cools album aber nöd super berauschend.

natürliiich gahts über e stund hards cover UUUH ES GAHT LOS banstyle findi boppt weniger aber isch au easy LANGWIIIILIIIIIIGGGG rowlaaaa findi na geil mit dene herte sounds pearl's girls GAHT DUUUUUMMMMMMMMMM jaa schlussendlich ua vill langwiligs, you know it bi electronica ABER paar mal hets geboppt und das git es 3 vo mier

Cult electronic band. Mostly know them for 'Born Slippy (Nuxx)', so fun to hear a whole album of them. While the two opening tracks were pretty decent 90s dance tracks (especially the first one), they were too minimalistic and especially long. 15-ish minutes each? Come on. For the dancefloor, sure. But not when listening to in an album. If they would've been condensed to 5 minute tracks each it would've been a different story. That's a feeling that keeps following me throughout the whole album. All songs have something (except 'Blueski', that is just garbage), but the length of the tracks make them tedious to listen to when you have to go through a whole album like this. In the end, there were some parts of the songs that I enjoyed, but I can't really say the album as a whole experience blew me away. Shame!

If I could summarize this album in a single word, it would be bloated. I get that 15 min rave tracks are great at raves, but listening to them as an album just gets boring. This was true for multiple tracks and even the album length is way too long. There were parts I really enjoyed. Especially the later songs like “Bluesky” and “Pearl’s Girl” were cool and felt quite trip hoppy. There is a good album in there somewhere, but I can’t give it more than 3 stars as is, I think even that could be a bit of a stretch.

Their fourth album. Techno / Electronica. Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream Of Love is an epic sixteen minute banger to open with. From there we have New Wave, Drum n Bass, Dance and even Goth vibes. Underworld have better albums, this one was okay.

6.0/10

This is another "I've heard of them but have never heard them" albums (till I just discovered they had a song in Trainspotting that is). I've enjoyed most of the electronic records on the list, so I figured I'd like this one as well. And that was mostly correct. Unfortunately I had to listen to it in a disjointed way, as I had many plans for the day and it got broken up into four separate pieces while I was driving to and fro. That likely affected the overall vibe of the listen, as it seems this is the kind of album that needed a one time sitting. What I found is that I preferred the first bit I heard (the first two songs) and the last bit I heard (the final three songs) more than the middle. I didn't dislike any of it, but I found those two parts the ones that kept my interest the most. I won't have time to listen to this again today, so I'll just say it was a mostly enjoyable experience and let that be the review.

No private session used for Spotify. Wasn't sure what I was getting into here. Excited by a 90's album, but then heard how electronic it started and that made me nervous. Turns out this wasn't bad, it wasn't the same beats over and making me think I needed pills to get into it, decent ambient background music.

Electric. If I was very drunk and in a club this would be highly rated for sure. It was ok and just about creeps a 3.

Would have been great if I was attending a night club in the Matrix

Solid, not an everyday listen type of album, but I liked it

Have beaucoup fish and dub no bass... Never got into this one. Sounds good.

You haven’t heard electronica like this since the last time you heard electronica like this. Or the last time you were shopping at the Limited.

Pretty solid album, liked a lot of the production. It’s hard to do electronic on this list tho, I feel it would be better in a club setting tho. I’ll say 3 stars

This is such an interesting album. Parts of it are like early Autechre, parts are almost funky, and other parts are grating. I like it. I don't love it, mostly because of the most abrasive parts, but man I like it.

I don't have much to say here. This kind of music has limited appeal to me. However this album is quite good. It's interesting enough to keep my attention. And while this music can get a bit repetitive, this album doesn't become monotonous.

59/1001 First listen. I have listened to hundreds of hours of this style of music and have seldom come across the same song twice. So this is just more of the same, somewhat generic music to me. I love it but it doesn’t stand apart from all the rest. I would put Rowla on a playlist though. 5/10

It was fine enough. I don't remember a damned thing from it a week or so out.

Jesus does this album drag on... I'm not an electronica fan, but as a drummer, I found the opening drum beat to be interesting enough to stick around for a bit. But my god, over 30 minutes in just the first 2 tracks?!? There's some interesting bits beyond there, but the album is honestly just too long.

Hat doch positiv überrascht, aber erneut hören würd ichs net

Not bad background music

Very drum 'n bass. Ok for background, nothing too crazy. Did recognize the band from the Trainspotting soundtrack.

This has a really nice tone to it. I'm honestly surprised at myself that I haven't ripped my hair out due to 10 minute long techno songs. The lyrics and the song titles are very cryptic, I could theoretically spent a long time trying to understand what they mean, but I guess sometimes lyrics aren't meant to symbolise anything. The singer kind of sounds like British version of R.E.M.'s singer Michael Stipe. Like I said the tone and ambience is great, just not completely sure if I would want to return to this, perhaps if electronic music is on my mind I would. Highlight Song/s: Confusion The Waitress

I really enjoyed the harsher and more aggressive songs on this album. Could do without the slow, laid back ones.

I had never heard of Underworld until I was given this record. And I can say upon my research that I will now assume that every 90s UK dance record is super fucking long. I've already dealt with William Orbit, who though talented as a producer for others, left me crawling to the finish line. However, Everything But The Girl astonished me with their take on club classics. So the score is 1/1 if I am correct. Underworld goes up to bat and the first thing I notice is the length. This record's length can be attributed to how they included 6 more songs after the first two's 31 combined minutes. While both well done, I don't know how a regular listener would want to check out the rest without feeling drained. Though they might feel intrigued since the first two songs are again quite good (those guitar bursts in Juanita, ooo). I find something to enjoy in how the group arranges their more progressive tracks, but out of 8 songs, only 4 take me by pure impression. If this album was just Tracks 1 and 2 plus Pearl's Girl (my favorite) and Stagger to close: it would be a great 49 minute release. Instead, there's 24 more minutes of often repetitive, uninspiring sounds, that while engaging in a club setting, pass through an ordinary listen. I'm sure Rowla goes harder when the bass is right in front of you, but you get the point already. Underworld has me in some way, but not entirely. The score is gonna go to 2/1; could've been better though (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)

oh yea I don't miss this musical era at all.

peak 90s rave culture

I’m not a techno listener but this has solid layers of sounds and I appreciate the production. Would be a good listen while gaming.

It's not what I would sit around and listen to… But it is what the cool underground kids in college would sit around and listen to.

Ganske nice jobbemusikk

Fed plade.

Decent, mellow, minimalistic and stuff

I thought it was a bit too long but actually rather varied in its sounds and electronic beats despite this. Even though most of the songs were on the longer side, they did a great job of keeping it fresh, even sometimes the repetitiveness it did have worked in its favour when some of the electronic parts changed around the same drum loops. I think as a whole though it’s not something I would want to listen to much in deep concentration but it’s great to have in the background or to listen to on a journey or something as it was a still a good listen. Favourites: Banstyle/Sappys curry and Blueski. Overall, 6/10. (If it was less bloated it would probably be in the 4 star area).

Not a genre I have spent much time listening too. A coherent album. Good vibes with some tracks I particularly liked.

Good background beats.

kept it on in the background

Pretty forgettable

Pulsing techno beats, fluid synth textures, and shifting rhythmic patterns build a hypnotic repetition that forms the album’s strongest core, while fragmented, stream-of-consciousness vocals drift through the mix, making this a mesmerizing yet detached Ambient downtempo. Unfortunately it is very long and didn't keep my interest troughout.

Damn this was so much better than I thought it would be. I’m not an electronic guy but this is varied enough to keep me interested

A good album, I liked Blueski and Stagger the most.

It's ok I guess for electronic. But kinda all the same
