Reviews (page 3 of 7)

496/1089 - Better than I thought it was going to be. Very emphasized drums and vocal harmonies. It's front-loaded for sure and doesn't do much to expand on it's sound later on. One of the better 3s.

some good tracks but albums like this drag a little, i enjoyed aspects of it tho

Some hits are decent. Pretty long album though.

I couldn’t write these songs if I tried

Pretty enjoyable album. The singles on this go really hard. The rest of the album Is good.

Sure, ok

Very 2000s. Takes me back to my youth but wasn't really my vibe at the time.

Aside from the hits this one was pretty lackluster.

"I don't think you're ready for this jelly." I wish that “Independent Women Part 1,” which is generally a banger, weren’t entirely about Charlie’s Angels. When I hear that song, I don’t think Destiny’s Child, I think Charlie’s Angels. I wish they had done with that song what Survivor did with “Eye of the Tiger.” When I hear that sample at the beginning of “Survivor,” what I think of is the band that made it, not the Rocky movie that featured it.

"All the women who independent, throw your hands up at me".

Wonderful voices with unforgettable tunes. Inspired a lot of what has later to come.

Wasn’t sold in the beginning, this super pop music isn’t really my jam but the second half of the album and the outro especially really got

Well, my listening journey goes from Leonard Cohen yesterday to Destiny's Child today, serious clash of listening cultures. Maybe a better connection/comparison for Destiny's Child would be RnB shows of the 70s (thinking James Brown and Temptations live recordings I've recently heard, thanks to the Generator), via Parliament/Funkadelic jams, into dance pop of the 90s and 00s? The sound here is busy, often catchy, particularly if I don't listen too close but just move my booty. The grooves are surely central - how quickly did they come up with the lyrics (were they really happy with them?) - did they spend more time on vocal lines or did they just pour out (from a lifetime of gospel experience?) - and were the vocal lines really sung that accurately or has autotune come to rule the roost? Bootylicious was already one of my favourite songs, I try not to worry about how fast the assembly line in studio sessions as revealed by the Wikipedia article. (18 different producers credited??) The filler part of the album (after putting the singles upfront) is not boring but not coherent, some of the lyrics surely a bit embarrassment. Anyway no-one needs my song by song comments, I'll say album as a whole is generally listenable, but I keep feeling nauseous like too much fairly floss and pop tarts. It's not unattractive, as pop, but not that good - one hot song doesn't make an album, I'm going to call it Okay, 6/10.

Solid pop album.

ritmos clasicos del rap de EEUU no fallan, creo que fue el último disco de la banda con beyonce y su voz se hace notar

good bit of filler but its highlights are some of the highest points of any music ever

Great three songs to open the album, then it falls off pretty hard

Decent pop music with singles that are all too familiar having grown up in the 90's to early 2000's. The musical arrangements aren't complicated which is common when the focus is the singers and the lyrics which are often shallow and straight forward but that is what it's trying to be. Its enjoyable to listen to, their vocals are nice and the beats are catchy and smooth so it's successful pop.

The first three songs, Independent Woman, Survivor and Bootylicious are 10/10 all time classics. The rest of the album then lives in the shadow of these songs. A shorter record with better sequencing could quite reasonably call itself a classic record, but it tries to bite off more than it can chew. Still - few records add this much to the culture. How many weddings have you heard all three of those songs at?

Some beats that are so damn catchy

i expected more tbh, the songs that are famous are good but the others… not memorable

Very well done, the singles are excellent. It's a 3 or a 4 but given that I'm very unlikely to stick the whole album on again it gets a 3.

I had this album as a kid. I will echo some of the other sentiments I've seen here about the slut-shaming lyrics and the album not aging well.

The vocals were stunning and honestly carried the album in weaker tracks like independant women pt II. Overall the album was good, but since I didnt watch the music videos I don't think I can really understand the cultural impact and the album itself. The album isnt bad to be clear, they definitely have great music and from just a listen I can understand some of the hype.

Gut eig

6/10 The first 3 songs are amazing and I even enjoyed Nasty Girl despite the awful lyrics, but this album suffers from the same problem I have with most albums of that era, it's unfocused and bloated as hell. As for the songwriting, I'm giving it as much thought as they were giving it by not thinking about it at all.

i mean I guess I know it's a good album, i just dont really like them

Nothing particularly wrong with this. Just not my thing. 3.0

Just not gatged

Några schyssta beats ändå, även om viben är lite utdaterad

goes kinda hard

eh, very 90s

It was boppy but samey, first three are classics but the rest kind of blends together.

I was not expecting this long of an album. It starts out hot with punchy singles then loses me. Still solid R&B though. Top tracks: "Independent Women Part I," "Survivor," "Bootylicious"

--Independent Women Part I...nice production --Survivor...don't like the midi sounds in the opening. rest of the song is fine. "I'm not gonna blast you on the internet", I'll blast you in an internationally known pop superhit instead! --Bootylicious...great use of a Stevie Nicks sample --Nasty Girl...stop slut shaming me, mom! --Fancy...the midi music is back. the overall production is holding this one back --Apple Pie à la Mode...kind of a weird left turn. I appreciate weird. nice bass --Sexy Daddy...another weird one but this one seems to lack focus. a lot of things are happening but it's not coming together for me --Perfect Man (I don't think this appeared on the original album release, so it will not be factored into my rating)...fun beat, great vocals, but nothing too special --Independent Women Part II...a fun and funky reprise --Happy Face...an affirmation of self on an album full of self affirmations --Emotion...a cover of a Barry/Robin Gibb song! it's real nice --Dangerously in Love...top-tier vocals --Brown Eyes...cheesy 80s r&b production. I feel like I'm back at my middle school dance and I'm nerdily dancing near my crush. at an appropriate distance, of course. this track is an easy skip --The Story of Beauty...much darker than "Brown Eyes". I enjoy this --Gospel Medley...I find it funny that a "Medley" is one of the shortest tracks on the LP. Yes, my humor is lame. great vocals --Outro (DC-3) Thank You...for example: this "outro" is over four minutes long

What an opener We started off so strong, but I just got more bored as we progressed Also can't stop staring at the cover, they look SO good Brown eyes sounds like Soda Pop

I didn't realize this album was so massive... Independent Women - Survivor - Bootylicious is a crazy 1-2-3 punch.

The up tempo singles are classics. The ballady slower songs are dreck. The back end of the album has palpable "just ship it" energy.

kind of bomb 6/10

Fun. A lot of fun.

so many bangers but thenn tohin

Since this stupid album starts by naming the stars of the movie the first song on the album is on the soundtrack of, I feel justified in comparing this album to the 2000 movie Charlie's Angels. That movie was the dumbest thing I have ever seen. It’s campy and glossy and playful, and overtly sexualized. It was the inevitable outcome of hiring a music video auteur to make his feature film debut on an action comedy based on “jiggle TV.” It came out right when our corporate overlords redefined “feminism” to mean the freedom for young women to dress up as Catholic school girls to entice hot dudes. But it’s also unashamedly a fun movie to watch, as long as you don’t think about it whatsoever. I think of this album the same way. There are worse things than really really stupid fun that isn’t trying to be anything other than really really stupid fun. My only criticisms are that it’s twice as long as it should be and it’s kind of awful. But other than that it’s pretty good. Maybe I just wasn’t ready for this jelly.

Surprisingly to me, this one wasn’t actually all that great. Like the hits are HITS but the rest were, okay? Really strong opening mind you. Notables: - Independent Women, Pt. 1 - Survivor - Bootylicious

Heard some songs from it. I'm actually surprised how much I enjoyed it. It really is a well made R&B album 3/5

If you went to discos, you had to know Destiny’s Child. I was never a fan of discos, but I knew the band—maybe because of my nieces, anyway. Aside from the fact that the girls play light pop, I didn’t remember anything specific about them. About halfway through the album, I was sure: that’s exactly what it is. Light pop that you can forget right away. 3/5

Start off strong, and then gets a little boring. The shoutout “ilu friends and also god” track was funny(?).

Holy cow I did not realize how long this album is lmao. The first three tracks are really strong and fun, but it starts to feel formulaic around the middle. Everything kind of blends together in a nice generic R&B sound.

everyone in the reviews needs to chill out. this is overlong and has wayyyy too much period-typical slut shaming & gospel overtones. but damn if survivor doesn't hit

this site needs a 3.5 star option so bad. this album starts off SO strong - the first four tracks are absolutely immense tunes. independent woman is everything destiny's child should be. survivor is an absolute banger, no further discussion needed. bootylicious is also iconic and that stevie nicks sample? crisp. beautiful. tasty. meanwhile, nasty girl is really just slut shaming: the song, but the incredible interpolations (TARZAN BOY??????? HELL YEAH) are enough for me to take the target off its back. but the rest of this album??? what HAPPENED, DC? total snoozefest. so unfocused. just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if any sticks (it doesn't, not even the cover of emotion). well, not so much THROWING spaghetti but lightly tossing it so as not to make a scene. it's just a bit disappointing after that bombastic start. favorites: tracks 1-4

The hits are great but this album is horrendously front loaded.

= the Beatles

Standouts Independent Woman Part ! Survivor Bootylicious

Seems like all late 90s/early 2000s pop was just about getting 3 good singles, make them the first three songs on an album and then fill the rest with super generic forgettable songs. That being said, the first three songs are enjoyable and although there’s nothing worth remembering, the harmonies were still pleasant for background noise. Between a 2 and 3 but nothing that I straight up disliked so I’m going with a 3

It's really weird that this was today's album, because this morning I randomly had the song "Independent Women" in my head and wondered if DC would be on the list. Maybe manifesting is real! "Survivor" still bangs...the first couple songs on this are heat, but then it peters off. Why does that always feel like the case with these early aughts albums? I always preferred Destiny's Child's music to solo Beyonce, maybe an old guy/hot take. "Nasty Girl" is a pretty goofy, and by today's standards, probably sex-negative song. I kind of like "Happy Face" musically, but as I listen closer, a lot of these songs have weird lyrics that are give Christian-ish Disney vibes. I like the song "Emotion" with the cheesy 2000s guitar picking on every R&B song....for some reason, the version I got doesnt have their gospel medley but Im gonna assume I can live without that.

Good album, legendary songs, not necessarily for me. 6.7/10

yassssssss queen, slay

Oh my god it’s been ages. Have I ever listened to the full album? Charlie’s mfin Angels (Independent Women). What a time to be alive. Unbelievable start really. IWpt1 followed by Survivor and bootylicious? Apple pie à la mode comedy. Realizing Emotion has been in my head since middle school Outro friendship prayers are wild??

This was big in 2001, and even then I thought it was a bit overrated, but this was a semi-rough listen today. The best songs came right out of the gate, but the remaining 70% were all over the place. Nice harmonies, overused vocal trill/vibrato.. overall 2.5/5 Destiny’s Child is lucky for the lack of half-stars

not the best but i like it

Nice popplaat, maar een heel album in 1x is na tijdje wel veel…

I liked this at the time, but it's really not dated well. Beyonce did way better stuff later and it makes this seem a bit unaccomplished in comparison.

Would I ever listen to this album? However, it definitely belongs on this list. One of the key girl groups ever. The album is frontloaded with the singles but they are absolute bangers. Will I listen again? Nope. Does it belong on this list? Definitely. It gets a three just for the first three tracks. Best Tracks: Independent Woman Pt.1; Survivor; Bootylicious

Quite decent for something not really my thing. 3.4 stars

This one is fine. Didn't blow me away. I remember it. 3 stars

This is kind of fun. The lyrics are mainly of the female empowerment theme which is a nice change. I would have appreciated a bit more funk/grit. The electronic backing music is pretty soulless. I’m sure ladies have more soul in them than this album indicates. Weirdly even the hymn at the end sounds very clean and controlled. The lack of musical depth is disappointing.

Jaaa eich ja scho fun. Und mal was anderes im album klöpp. Aber so öpis ganz durelose wäred em schafe. Nöd möglich, zu ahstrengend. Es paar bangers aber halt mood abhängig. 3 children

Smart, sassy, filled with hooks - stadium pop. The singles are great, but it does get rather samey 20 minutes in 3 stars (would be 5 if the whole album was as good as the 3 opening tracks)

This is fine. My one main complaint about all styles of boy/girl bands is the need for them to be running vocals every second of every song, I am fully aware you can do a vocal run, do all three of you need to be doing vocal runs every second of downtime? I'm generalizing of course but that's not even a full complaint of this album, just the genre as a whole. Song writing is fine, melodies are great, this is a well made stepping stone for Miss Bey. It falls trap to the 2000's of it all, and maybe it's just because I was alive for the 2000's (and not for any full decades before) it's just really easy to see the tropes and references that make this sit weird.

Good for what it is. Not my jam, but it was pretty easy to get through and I can't say that for all the R&B albums on this list. 3.3

Klassiska grejer

De gör sin grej bra men det var inget speciellt som stack ut utöver de uppenbara hitsen.

Fine, but not really me.

Milestone album for this genre, easy listening

Beyoncé & Co

Not really my thing, but cool and foundational. I get why its important. The lyrics visceral and poignant. Focussed on feminism and social justice.

It's alright.

I can tell this is objectively good, but I just have trouble getting into this genre.

Couple good ones, the rest are meh. 3.5*

Average.

This is an absolute time capsule of an album. There are a handful of songs on this album that were staples for a decade, and that still hold cultural relevance today. But I couldn't help but think many of the songs were goofily prideful, especially over more than an hour's worth of songs. Or at least the first half, when they lean a little more into the R&B side of things I started to enjoy the album a bit more. Highlight: Brown Eyes Lowlight: Nasty Girl

Starts so strong. They put the big hits up front. Rest is filler

Leuke hitjes, wel veel skips, grappig om te zien op welk album emotion stond

Sad to report that I find this album as middling as everyone else in the reviews seem to. The first three songs are the most well known songs for a reason; the next two songs wouldn't see the light of DAY today, and then the rest of the songs are just fine.

Not my usual bag, but I took this journey with the intention of being as open minded as possible. Straight away, "Independent Women Part 1" is instantly recognizable and feels like an important song to that early 2000s zeitgeist. It's catchy, it rises and falls in the all the right places, has a solid beat and has lyrics that empower women. It was a great way to start the album and set the expectations for everything to follow. "Survivor" hits similar points, which makes me think that variation in this album is going to be minimal. The underlying guitar note on "Bootylicious" is surprisingly enjoyable with the drums and hats layered on top. I found the lyrics slightly embarrassing and their voices don't seem to have the same kind of punch as it did in the first two tracks. "Nasty Girl" I can't work out if they are imitating critical voices of women or if they are being the critical voices themselves. According to some more professional reviews, it is that they are being critical. This is strange, considering that they were building up women in the first track and beating them down in this one, essentially asking them to conform to a way of dressing and behaving. This, unfortunately, is the very ugly side of the early 2000s on display here (some 2-3 years later, America's Next Top Model would air, which pushed a similar narrative for over a decade). "Fancy" was solid, the guitar and beat was great throughout the song and the harmonies came together nicely throughout. As the album creeps on, it seems that almost every song is about men, women and the relationships between, by "Apple Pie À La Mode" is when this hit me. I understand the need for music to be relatable to be successful, but by this point, they could be singing about the weather and hit the same point. By "Sexy Daddy", I was deeply bored of this. Reading ahead on the lyric front, I see this doesn't break until "Happy Face"... that's 10 tracks of this. Musically, the beats and guitars are starting to feel gimmicky by Sexy Daddy too. With almost arcade-y like drums and synth beats, "Happy Face" was one of the more interesting tracks and did something to break the lyrical monotony. Despite lyrically being back to relationships with "Emotion", the acoustic guitar, slow beat and the vocal harmonizing of the 3 was incredible. Easily my favourite track on the whole album. "Dangerously in Love" was doing something similar, but not as well I feel. "Brown Eyes" had movie soundtrack cheesiness to it. "The Story of Beauty" interestingly told a story that was off-brand with the rest of the album's lyrics, but it felt buried in the goofy beats and sparkle sound effects. A real shame with that one. "Thank you" felt the same too. A strong 4 from the first 3 tracks slipped to a 3, but was saved from the 2 on the back's of "Emotion" and "Dangerously in Love", despite still being about relationships.

Extreme hardcore girl pop. Some good grooves but overall slightly shallowish.

Stand-out tracks: Independent Women Pt. 1, Survivor, Bootylicious, Nasty Girl, Emotion Not much to say about this one. Started off ok with some singles and enjoyable tracks, but I kind of lost interest towards the end.

Highlights: Independent Women Pt. I and Pt. II, Survivor, Bootylicious, Nasty Girl, Fancy, Emotion The singles are dope, but as time goes on I like Survivor less and less. Especially that wtf transition to Bootylicious. Compared to that, I am liking Bootylicious more and more. First half is much stronger than the second. It goes from a very modern urban sounding rnb to a very vocal centric version of rnb often crossing into gospel which I found a bit dull compared with the first half.

Not exactly my speed, but overall pretty decent. Sort of like a comic book showing Beyonce's origin story. Survivor is their third studio album. Not much to say. Some decent songs, etymologists would highlight the first use of the word Bootylicious, and Sexy Daddy and Dangerously In Love were pretty good. Again, not my jam and I don't know I'll go back to it, but decent overall.

I like this album, except this kind of music isn’t really for me. The first 2 songs kind of got me excited and then it all fell after that. Overall, there were some good song on this album, but this album isn’t really my kind of vibe.

Nja.

Definitely front-loaded and a bit long, but there are some great songs on here.

Replacement: Mahashmashana - Father John Misty

the production on this was great and is very evocative of early 2000s. lyrically the themes are all over the place. there are some very bad songs that easily couldve been cut and dropped this album to 40 minutes and earned it at least one extra point

I hated this in high school, but it's honestly fine. Again, one of the things I wish I had been more open minded about.

This one wasn’t my thing. There are some bops, but even then they’re songs I would sing along to if they were on but not ones I would seek out. It gets very religious towards the end which isn’t my thing, although I do like the singing on the gospel medley. Other than the classics it just feels like a lot of songs that don’t stand out and feel pretty dated. The combined mix of “girl power” and being really shitty about other women makes for an uncomfortable listen as well. Fav song: Bootylicious Least fav: Nasty Girl (what a crazy song to put right after Bootylicious)

There's no denying that Beyonce had a huge impact on music and pop culture (I mean there's a full wikipedia article called "Cultural Impacts of Beyonce") and Destiny's Child was the start of that. The album itself starts very bop heavy with some truly iconic songs but it definitely drops off a bit towards the end when the ballads start up and the weird religious song at the end really threw me. Iconic album if a bit incohesive. Favourite song: Bootylicious Least: Gospel Medley

Some bangers!

Some Bootylicious hits. Some Nasty misses. Independent Women part 2! Crazy times

Survivor

The strength of this album, the precise production, the perfect harmonies, the sleekness is also the weakness as it has too much of a sheen. However, the voices are perfect and the opening three songs almost define the sound of 21st century pop

It's a classic but not something I would listen to often.

very fun but it felt front heavy and got repetitive after a while. splitting it up helped to keep it fresh and i enjoyed it a lot. some songs really caught me off guard but i ended up liking a lot (independent women part 2 was so weird but cool & emotion being the first ballad after 9 tracks felt out of left field) the thank yous were weird too but sweet ig ?

They’re so mean to the nasty girl in Nasty Girl :(

Early 2000's really thought they needed to fill an hour, just make it 40 minutes and it's way better. Will I listen to again: 5%

Some bangers at the start but then it’s just mid after mid

man what a great era for pop r&b. The singles off this are all certified smash hits (considering one of them was the Charlie's Angel tie-in which is just bonkers) but the chaff inbetween isnt really needed listening. Thankfully the hits do the heavy lifting even if the album is frontloaded with them. Since we probably wont get another DC album, I'll tell my most vivid memory of a Destiny's Child song is my friends girlfriend (long time ex now) singing Say My Name for karaoke on her birthday, but it was just a Vietnamese restaurant with 6 microphones passed around and one of the tvs in the corner with the lyrics scrolling. Anyway she sang the whole song in his face and it was very awkward for everyone present.

All my ladies, who independent, throw your panties at me! I totally forgot Emotion which was such a delight to rediscover. Bootylicious and Survivor and Independent Woman pt 1 are top tier pop songs. The rest of the album is a bizarre mix of judgemental songs like Nasty Girl and Fancy, as well as weirdly uncomfortable songs like The Story of Beauty and Sexy Daddy (wasn’t Beyonces daddy their manager or something?). All in all it’s a pretty mixed bag but damnit those hits really elevated it up a star. I’ll never return to this one but Bootylicious will live in my head forever.

𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘰𝘳 is a polished, energetic slice of early-2000s R&B, full of tight harmonies, glossy production, and hooks that still land surprisingly well. It’s easy to appreciate how cleanly the album is put together and how confidently the trio delivers each track. Still, even with its strong moments, it’s not the kind of record I feel compelled to revisit — enjoyable in the moment, but not one that really stays with me afterward.

I only gave it a 3 cause bootylicious is an anthem for the ages.

Ouvi o álbum com muita boa vontade apesar de não ser um estilo de pop que me agrada. Achei que tem músicas bem variadas e bem feitas. Celest Phoenixcall.

Starts off with some bangers and then gets so square. Maybe a 2

fun to listen to

Independence Day meets Pretty Woman

Technically impressive, great production quality, and the singers are all very talented. I just didn't enjoy it.

Smart songwriting, killer drum programming, occasionally fun lyrics (Survivor) & immaculate vocal performances: should be clear indicators for a strong album. As a child of the early 90s, I grew up with those slick RnB productions from the turn of the millennium blasting from the radio and on repeat on MTV. Not seldomly you tend to look back with a touch of nostalgia looking back at the sound of your youth. But I was never down for the RnB sound of the oughts and I oftentimes asked myself why I never even enjoyed the hits. As the years passed and I keep on revisiting a record from this period once in a while, I figured that it’s mostly the production. To my ears it sounds like plastic and high gloss, and it’s way too much bling for me. In a way I would compare the production to the early use of CGI effects in cinema, which in retrospect looks so damn cheap and unconvincing. Those Midi stabs of classical instruments are downright obnoxious (Sexy Daddy). How I wish, they they went full electronic and consequently synthesized tones (not that imitation style or the way Perfect Man sounds) or used real instrumentation. That would have really elevated the sound and probably made it more lasting (Independent Women Pt. II would be an example where the instrumental is just great). I mean yeah, it was the time, but It’s a shame, because the songs are crafted well and the drum programming influenced by the push and pull dynamics of those brilliant drummers from the 60s and 70s is iconic and super influential. And yeah, the lyrics are sometimes cringey, I know. But then again, there is so much hard and glam rock in this configurator (which is hands down, the worst genre of all time when words mean anything to you). Also the record is waaaaay to long, if you’re not 100% into that kind of stuff. Is Happy Face are foreshadow of Beyoncé’s latest excursion into country?

Songs are way too repetitive.

3.5 not my jam

It was good.. not a love

Aujourd'hui : Destiny's Child.

Some good tunes but bit schmaltzy overall

It starts with three bangers in a row which is pretty impressive. I also enjoyed the middle of the album but towards the end it got pretty bad. You can hear that they actually ran out of ideas.

Wow, I totally get why this album was on here because they were a super group and the impact they had on 2000's music was so big (good or bad). These three are pop culture icons, and Beyonce recently became the second female musician billionaire. One cannot deny at least one of the albums by these ladies should be on this list. But in retrospect, this is sooooo 2000's cringe pop culture, from the outfits they are wearing, to the movie and actress name drops, to the female empowerment followed immediately by female catty slut shaming. They took everything in the 2000's and created a brand, a persona, a lifestyle, a phenomenon that oozed everything girls wanted to be and boys wanted their girls to be. If Cosmo and Essence birthed the perfect females it would be these three. They are talented in dancing and singing, as well as making songs that pop culture wants and pays for. Not sure in retrospect I would call it good quality music but man back in the day I danced and sang along to these songs with the rest of the world!

Really out of my element here. It's fine. I liked Beyonce's cowboy alum. This is before all that. Survivor, Bootylicious, Independent Women II, & Emotion are my favorites.

Até que enfim R&B dos anos 2000, adoro. Bom álbum, a primeira metade é melhor. Destaque pra os hits que todo mundo já conhece e ''Fancy". 3,5/5

The Destiny’s Child album to prove all those “Star Search” judges wrong.

3.5 stars - The first three tracks are bops, but the rest are so so.

This was ok

I get the love. Good album with a couple of great songs.

There's the big singles, then a bunch of other tracks that sound similar but aren't as catchy or good. So maybe not really an album so much as singles plus filler. But I feel like that's what most pop albums are like. Some of the songs are kind of a ripoff of older classics--Sexy Daddy is reminiscent of Glorida Estefan's Conga. And Survivor seems like a reinterpretation of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive. Nonetheless, based on the cultural relevance of the singles, maybe it's a 3. Otherwise, I'd probably lean 2.

I listened to this back in the day but it sounds so different now!! All independent women, but some of you are nasty and need to put clothes on. It’s a 2 star album but it’s getting 3 for the nostalgia and Emotion which I had a good song along too.

Well done but 90s all the way. The harmonies are superb. Beyonce is a powerhouse. But again, it’s the 90s zeitgeist so not a classic.

Was enjoying it more, but fizzled out

The ocean of talent that separates Beyoncé and the other members of Destiny’s Child is kind of amusing.

Good stuff

Monotonous

Plenty of bops on this album. Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of 90s R&B. That said, the first several tracks are a heck of a run of songs; the album just sort of blends together for me after that. The gospel song near the end is a nice refresher. Plenty of talent on display here, and even with me not loving the general style it earns a reasonable rating based purely on those early tracks.

Iconic album! These songs played on TV, radio, in stores, in movies, everywhere! Most songs are entertaining but some of them have aged poorly. I find that it's consistent with Beyonce albums that even within a single album, the song messages are wildly inconsistent. This is not a concept album!

This was absolutely massive my freshman year of high school. The singles were all mega hits and Destiny’s Child was everywhere. Even then, it was clear Beyoncé was the shining star, with all respect to the talented Kelly Rowland and… um.. the other one. Is it a good album? In my opinion: not really. The singles are bangers and I’m going to shamelessly sing along to them, but there is a lot of bloat here and listening to the entire album is a chore. I think the album could literally be 30 minutes shorter, and if it was I think an argument could be made that it’s a great artistic achievement along with still being a mega commercial hit.

Siglo 21, buen sonido música de baile y canciones melódicas con buenas voces femeninas. De aqui sale Beyonce.

It was ok, not for me.

The singles were still the best ones on the album. I don't think this is my kind of music.

I always find empowering that a female group does so well, but in this album seems that there's no clear vision about it or about anything. It has some gems in it alright, but overall it's a mediocre to bad album and production and poor lyrics -except a couple of songs- didn't help at all. Independent Women Part 1,boping commercial R'n'B song that except it's empowerement ,i can't listen to anymore. It was everywhere in 2000's so it reached my hearing threshold. Survivor, still on the empowerement side field, better that the previous hit but still i'm too tired of the girl group 00's thing. Bootylicious is the only gem out of this album that i loved back then and i still do. Nasty Girl shouldn't have been in this album.Slut shaming after empowerement? It doesn't make any sense at all.I mean, make up your mind already.God,and this one was a single. Fancy. Now we hate women?Too shame cause i kinda liked the production on this one.. Apple Pie A La Mode.Weird and unexpectably fun. Sexy Daddy.Just awful.A lot of skipping. And i don't skip songs-this was an emergency-. Perfect Man.See notes above. Also, crappy production, and i would have forgive this if it was the first album, but it wasn't.. Independent Women Part II.Un-nessesary.I mean wtf? Happy Face. Finally an uplifting oasis that gives some interest.Quite a pleasant surprise! It's funny what some electronic elements can do. Dance With Me.nice generic R'n'B.Bit boring and long though. My Heart Still Beats.I was a bit worried that this album won't have a ballad.Apparrently it does and it's magical.Strangely enough, this is actually my favourite.Mariah vibes. Emotion.I started to like this one but then i realised that this was a cover of Samantha Sang's Emotion. Quite good, but i prefer the original. Brown Eyes. This one had potential but the lyrics are too overused. If Mariah Carey had the instrumental she would have written fire lyrics and this would have been a number one hit. Dangerously In Love.Great acoustic and wah wah guitar that almost saves it and makes it a favourite of mine. The Story Of Beauty.Too Busy at times. So much going on and not in a good way.Oh,and empowerement is back. Gospel Medley.Great acappella harmonies. Outro (DC-3) Thank You.Unnessesary.The Gospel Medley could have end this better and more beautifully. It will also have a purpose if there was also an intro. 3/5 .For Bootylicious,My heart Still Beats and Happy face.I still can't believe that this album was nominated for a Grammy.I guess sales pushed the voting.

what can I say? it was glitzy and fun!

Album #965 Not my type of music, but it's good for what it is. I'm glad that it isn't raunchy like later R&B would become, including Beyonce's solo music. I heard some lifting of Push It, Tarzan Boy, and Edge of Seventeen. The outro was sweet with all the girls gushing over one another. If only The Beatles did something like that, then maybe they would have stayed together forever like Destiny's Child did.

It's kinda mad that the first 4 tracks, all the singles, go: female empowerment X2, celebrating big booties, slut shaming. Not sure the messaging is very consistent here. It's also probably the most overt example I've heard of a CD-era trend where all the good songs are shoved at the front, then you are left with filler for the rest. My only other observation is that, after their lineup changes, this seems to be Beyonce's Diana Ross stage, where she was very much thrust into the limelight and catapulted towards mega stardom. 3* because after the first few hits, it's less strong

This album kicks off with a bang. Survivor and Independent Woman Part 1 are two excellent anthems. Both are really well constructed tracks Unfortunately, what follows just pales, not just in comparison to those two songs, but also to a lot other similar groups like TLC, En Vogue, SWV, etc. So while this album is decent, it’s obvious from the start that it could have been a lot better.

This feels very early 2000s from the production to topics. I knew of "Survivor", "Independent Women", and "Bootylicious" from the radio already but "Independent Women pt II", "Nasty Girl”, and "Fancy" are all new to me. The outro song is sooo weird with how reverential to god it is and it almost feels passive aggressive to the former members of Destiny's Child with how much they praise Michelle (the newest member and replacement member). I hate that I can hear some clear skill differences between Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle. They all sound great together but it makes so much sense why Beyoncé has done what she's done in the pop music space. I liked this album but it felt like a product of its time.

Pretty good, quite enjoyed it. A bit frontloaded? I think it starts with a bang but then carries on with alright songs.

This is one of my partner's childhood/adolescence album, and it does fall into the same years that I was also growing up. They are also songs I haven't listened to in a while. Nasty Girl's slutshaming message was very bizarre, to the point where I'm thinking I must be reading it wrong. Fancy has this weird quality where the beat sounds like a song from Ocarina of Time which I thought was funny. It does feel like the album has very conflicting messages, but (thankfully) the songs that are the best lyrically (Independent Woman and Survivor) are also the best musically. This creates a huge divide in quality on the album. There are too many songs I would classify as 1's or 2's, and then there's Survivor which is probably a 5. I wish I could give this album a quantum ranking. In the absence of such a thing, I'm gonna have to give it a 3.

This album starts off really well then it’s kind of just a bunch of middle of the road songs. I can see why people like it but after the first 3-4 songs it’s all forgettable to me.

It's closer to a 2, but the first few songs are bangers

Weird album. I found myself tuning out after the first 3 songs I knew. Interesting choice to cover a Bee Gees song. And then the gospel mix after that

3 for me. 5 for watching my wife dance to it.

With the singles from this album it’s basically a classic of the genre. But the remaining songs sound very much like an afterthought. When it works it works, but otherwise extremely forgettable

Forgot this thing starts off with references to the Charlie’s Angels movie lol It’s good, but overlong. Some absolute mega-hits on here, but also a lot of songs that just kind of drag. An interesting moment in production too. So much of this sounds so influential, and will be for pop music for the next 10 years, and then there’s some tracks that sound extremely stuck in the 90s.

some iconic bops

Missed this whole craze but fun album.

peak turn of the century/millennium pop R&B

5/10 The first 3 songs are modern pop classics, no doubt. The rest is forgettable filler of varying degrees of banality. The Thank You song is so cringe inducing I had to pull over from driving as my curled toes made it dangerous to operate the pedals

It was destiny that Beyoncé would break out.

The first 4 songs are terrific, the rest of the album loses momentum for me, and turns gospel by the end which ain’t for me

Nonstop hits!!! ...for the first three songs. Then the quality drops noticeably into a string of more pedestrian songs that feel very ofntheir time and aren't very memorable.

What is up with this album cover? We're looking straight UP Kelly's nose, Michelle looks like she's about to apologize for failing to pray hard enough - for which apparently she was made to awkwardly curl up with a painful push up bra on, one arm hooked bird-like in her lap - while Beyonce sprawls even more awkwardly, her boobs roughly centered in the image. It's just straight amateur hour, which you wouldn't expect given this was their 3rd album. What's more, the album itself is largely a mix of cringe ('Nasty Girl' and 'Fancy' are oddly anti-woman given the feminist-leaning lyrics of 'Independent Women...and don't get me started on 'Sexy Daddy', which is almost good until the fucked up song title kicks in on the lyrics) and forgettable. And it's just way too long. The fact that I owned Writings on the Wall but not this album is testament to how mediocre it is. Only 'Bootylicious' pushes this up from being a 2.

Not the type of music I generally listen to, but it was a great listen. Rich vocals and upbeat rhythms made it a good time.

Opener Independent Women, Pt I instantly transports me back to a simpler time. As this is mainstream pop for the masses, the sounds here not only reflect, but also largely defined the turn of the Millennium sound. A time when power pop-groups were king (NSync, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, etc.). The sounds are highly processed/polished with grandiose flourishes (sweeping strings, etc.). For what it is Survivor is a classic track. Instrumental sounds extremely dated and a bit like a cast-off from Eminem's Curtain Call era. Never recognized before that the instrumental for Bootylicious is built around a sample of Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks. Ngl, this is a fun song. The chimes and synth'd maraca budget on this project must have been astronomical. Independent Women Pt II is a fun follow-up to the opener that adopts a punchy bass-led instrumental and effective minor vocals progression. Feels like something that could slot in unnoticed on JT's 20/20 Experience. I actually really enjoy Happy Face. Out of character with the rest of the album, but the instrumental is quirky and fun. Kind of makes me think of Janelle Monae a bit. But that said, I might as well have checked out beyond that point. Outside of Dangerously In Love I found the remainder of the album to be very forgettable. Admittedly this is a style of music I haven't spent much time with. And for that I am pre-disposed to like it less. With that in mind, I feel like this was an O.K. album that succeeds on its ability to layer vocals and pump out some empowerment anthems (Survivor + Independent Women). Unfortunately, this album drags HARD in its second half as they pull the rug on all the energy from the first half and replace it with sappy R&B ballads (Emotion, Brown Eyes, etc.). Brown Eyes in particular has one of the cheesiest instrumentals I think I have ever heard. All said, this is a 3 for me. The vocals are solid and the upbeat tracks are classics. If they had cut the album at Emotion, this has a stronger case at a 4 IMO.

Beyonce is a great singer. The early 2000s manufactured beats are always so bad imo.

Survivor is such a jam. Happy Face had me bouncing around. Other than that meh. Not the worst of the 2000's pop though!

The keyboard sounds in the intro to Survivor are absolutely awful. I'd never realised this. Fine pop Album otherwise.

The voices are good, but the music just isn’t that interesting

What an opening trio of songs: "Independent Woman Part 1," "Survivor," and "Bootylicious." All of them are bangers. I remember these songs taking over the world when they came out, and they stand the test of time two decades later. Some of the vocals on “Apple Pie a la Mode” have a wild, swirling flow. I love the loose, playful feel of the song and the jazzy vocal runs. (It reminds me a bit of one of my favorite Beyoncé songs, "Blow" from her 2013 self-titled album). There are surprising interpolations on the album. The inclusion of the "Oh-wah-oh-wah" from "Tarzan Boy" on "Nasty Girl" caught me by surprise and made me laugh. And "Sexy Daddy" recycles a bit of Gloria Estefan's "Conga" around the 1:25 mark, which makes for a fun "Wait, I know this, what is that?" moment trying to place the familiar melody. Like a lot of albums from this era, there’s a fair amount of filler and fluff. But there’s some good albums cuts too, and all of it is beautifully produced. And even when the song is less than memorable, Beyoncé’s vocals always stand out. 3.5

The hits are absolute bangers, which I never really realised until now. But overall it’s just a bit too much pop for me

Independent Woman, I forgot how much I like this song. Brings me right back to being in middle school and listening to this with my friends like we had any real idea of life. lol getting actual chills from the harmonizing like damn. going from survivor into bootylicious is a trip. i was not expecting that. idk what i thought nasty girl would be like but this was not slut shaming. like i know this was the 2000s but damn. i also did not expect to go from songs like independent woman and survivor to gospel like music at the end.

You can't knock it there is some absolute banging singles on here! It's by far not my favourite genre at all... However, there is some very dated, over produced crap also.

Singles are great. Too long and lost stars for the gospel songs

As a kid listening to this you believe that nothing in life will be too bootylicious for you, but an important part of growing up is acknowledging that yes, sometimes it really is just too bootylicious for ya babe.

First 3 tracks are pop classics. Then bar one more tune, its very samey and tbh, boring.

Listened Before? N The bangers on this album really bang. The rest feels like filler. I recognize it's importance in pop though and I didn't hate listening to it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Bootylicious

Not my thing but can see why it was popular

Not sure what I can say about this one. Obviously there's talent here, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that jelly. Overproduced synthesized garbage pop with attempts to sound edgy with painfully obvious selections of words ("go'n" never sounded so perfectly the same in every utterance). Like trying to subsist on sugary desserts, this one is all filler, no substance.

Я совсем не целевая аудитория такой музыки. Ваще не моё. Такая довольно типичная гламурная попса конца 90х - начала 00х. Не бесячая, но и прикола ее я не понимаю. Петь вроде умеют...

It was good and a bit funny.

Lots of bops, as the kids would say. Must've been a blank in my memory, because upon research, I didn't realize Beyonce previously had other members in the group.

Started off as one of the stronger albums but really waned

Bit conflicted by this one because on the one hand, THE SINGLES OMG and also their voices are really good and the whole v early 00s R&B sound is just sooo nice but on the other hand, listen to what they’re actually singing about in some of these 😬😬😬like what was the need for Nasty Girl guys, even in 2001.

so i do think this album is a bit milquetoast and i actually prefer the album that came before this one.. but its fun... i sorta barely liked it tho sadly

Survivor is just astonishingly good. Does this album need to be an hour long? I don't think so. But the first half is top tier pop, and the lyrics, while straightforward, are fun and good. If they cut some of the dead weight and got it down to 35 minutes, probably gets 4 stars. But damn the first few tracks kill it. I think If you made an album out of the two parts of independent women and everything in between, *maybe* backfilling 1-2 songs from the b-side, you'd have a much better and more cohesive product. 3.5 Rounding down. I was curious and looked up the music videos for some of these. The 90s energy is out of this world.

Destiny's Child deserves their place on this list! Survivor was ground-breaking and was everywhere in 2001. I didn't even realize how many of these songs I already knew. This goes without saying, but their voices were amazing, in every single song. "Gospel Melody" showcased their vocal talents; the minimal accompaniment allowed them to shine. And their harmonizing is unparalleled, though I am reminded of their predecessors Boyz II Men. Destiny's Child stands unique to this day because of how they entwined R&B and pop; they weren't the first, they weren't the last, but they did it so well. As for my enjoyment of the album, I'm at about a medium. I had fun listening to the songs I knew, but the album's bland songs brought it down. Still, gotta give it up for the sheer talent. And I, of course, loved all the women empowerment.

Destiny's Child was no doubt a 2000s phenomenon. I knew all the big hits from this album, but had never heard the entire album. And honestly, I wasn't missing out. Don't get me wrong, these three have fantastic harmony and voices. But aside from the big hits, this album really isn't anything noteworthy. Destiny's Child definitely wasn't an "album" group. I identified a couple of interpolations that I enjoyed: in "Bootylicious", you have the use of Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen", and in Nasty Girl, the use of Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy". Both fascinating and fun uses here. Destiny's Child was definitely a 2000s sensation and their hits persist because of that, but I feel like they've also benefitted retroactively from having Beyonce's name attached. Anyway, this album was okay. The hits still hit, the rest of the album is okay at best. Weak 3.

First two songs are classics. Everything else is forgettable.

Huh, don't think I expected to see this here. Really front loaded with all of the major hits of this record, all of which I have heard thousand times on radio when I was a kid. For a while I was actually wondering if it would turn out that I would have heard all the songs on the album, but never listened to the album itself. I am not much of an R&B fan honestly, so I find it hard to gauge how good this is. It's so hard for me to view this in another way than a bunch of radio hits, none of which are my sauce really. The album definitely has a quite weak ending, with the gospel song about god and the thank-you song being the absolute lowpoint of the album. Overall this is a decent jam if you'd ever want to listen to old R&B songs, but not more than that to me.

Man, the first 3 tracks are iconic and I have them in multiple workout playlist, true peak 00s pop. Bootylious (just the name is so corny) has a great sample from "Edge of seventeen". Survivor is a great bop and so is "Independant Women Part 1" (even though the abundance of movie references makes it age worse than the other tracks. After those tracks the record falls of a cliff edge. It was just a cringe slog for the rest of the run time. First 3 tracks makes it a 5 star but the rest makes it loose quite a few. I can't recommend the album, just listen to a Destiny's Child top 10 tracks (or greatest hits if you are old school). 3 stars maybe?

It took me multiple tries to finally finish this entire project as a whole. Why is it whenever I try an R and B record it feels... slower. Its not like i didn't dislike this record, but it definitely just... felt so long to listen to this despite being 59 mins long Record was pretty alright. I didn't have alot out of it but I enjoyed so much with all of their voices.

A staple of the genre and some big hits on there. Not my vibe but hard to argue with the impact this album had.

-so this is how Beyonce got her start… definitely not up to par with her best solo work by a long shot, and it was pretty hard for me to connect with many individual tracks. -the rhythm and vocals are quite nice and kept the album from getting truly boring, but yea this wouldn’t be my first choice -Favorites are Survivor and Bootylicious

This album is by no means bad. Aside from the inconsistent themes, there’s nothing I can objectively say against this album. lt’s simply just not what I like listening to. That being said, there’s still a lot of good I can say about it, like the harmonies and the iconic hits on the front end. Though I recognized the singles, I did find the slower songs in the second half more enjoyable. I’d probably give it a 2.5/5.

An incredibly easy listen - and that's a good thing! A nice mix of big bangers and then more chill stuff. I could have done without the last four songs but overall incredibly smooth. Good place to see and hear where Beyonce got started.

I knew this wasn't my usual kind of music, but, bearing in mind the incredibly strong singles and the force of nature that is Beyoncé, I was expecting to be quite impressed. Unfortunately though, I found it a bit dull overall and too long. I did enjoy some of the tender moments, as well as the strong "posturing" (meant in a good way) - but I didn't enjoy it as an album. All power to them, though.

Shiny. A lot of throwaway lyrics. But one can dance and the production is slick. Not particularly inventive. But it has the slick plasticity and sexual airbrushing that sells well to a lot of people. As music, meh. As advertising and illusion, I'll give it a run of the mill 3. It does represent the commercial style well.

In 6th grade, I went to a classmates birthday party that was Survivor themed and the only song that was played for about an hour was Survivor by Destiny's Child. Starts on an absolute tear but it's kinda shocking how many woman hating songs on here. 2.5/5

Some big hits here

Great R&B with Beyoncé

An album that celebrates women is always a great thing, and this album is arguably one of the best at doing so.

it's aight

3/5 A landmark R&B album, but has lots of arbitrary vocal cadenzas (ie showing off). The third release from Destiny’s Child is where they really grew into a more mature star group. This a complete album though lacking a story ir thematic consistency. Many of the tracks are interesting and more dynamic than the 3 top 40 hits that lead off the album.

Pleasant R&B, stays mostly consistent with the cool Destiny's Child R&B style and the MIDI kinda strings and stuff, it can feel a little dated when it veers from that Also having a gospel song praising and thanking the lord on the same album as "Bootylicious," "Sexy Daddy" and "Nasty Girl" is a little wild

Not my sort of music but I really loved this album

Its alright. Im not a big Beyonce guy to begin with. I think having some other ladies to bounce off of does make it better but its still whatever to me. Like it not bad but Its not really for me either. The hits are great and also dance with me are the stand outs. But alot of it is slow ballads which is not my style at all. Fine enough

This was a moment in time and doesn't really hold up today.

Not everything on this album is great but what is, is. Charlie's Angels song, check. BeeGees cover, check. I was ready for this jelly.

Ok. Not my sort of thing

insane choice. if you want to listen to Destiny's Child listen to Writing's on the Wall, and you can just do the singles, even. This album could be chopped in half and it would only improve. 2.5

Starts strong with 4 great songs but tapers off after that

One of the most atrocious things late 90s and early 00s pop has made us suffer through is the over-emphasizing of words to drag them out over a musical phrase. While not achieving as terribly high a score as Christina Applegate, Beyoncé™ and Co's Survivor doesn't survive. It's representative of an era of pop music that doesn't leave a warm feeling. Not to mention the gross pushing of Beyoncé by her momager. The album is okay, as a record of the time but it is not a great album. 2.5/5

Eh. It’s fine enough but not my thing.

This album has the hits that everyone knows, but also has some deep cuts, that gives a better appreciation at the skill that Destiny’s child has. Although I do like this, I personally feel that the writings on the wall is a more cohesive album. A few songs on this album seem like they were added at the last minute to reach the limit they were looking for, but could easily have been moved to a different album instead.

I love the singles but the rest left me a bit cold.

3 estrelas pela byonça

I still remember when the first three songs on this album completely ruled the radio and MTV. Hearing them now definitely brings back that early 2000s nostalgia. But after those first three tracks, it starts to lose steam. The rest of the album has some solid moments but nothing that hits quite the same. Still, there’s no denying Destiny Child's talent or how massive they were at the time.

Good pop music but the lyrics were quite boring and not inspired

These women were my hometown heroes growing up. It’s hard to dismiss an album with 4 hits and a future superstar, but some of this is hard-carried by nostalgia.

Acrually pretty good

I enjoyed the sound and songs of this but it was much too long and loses a star for unnecessary length.

Empieza muy bien con las super famosas, pero en general not my cup of tea. La penúltima canción, en donde las hijas del destino se juran estar juntas siempre y ser siempre amigas y jamás deshacer el grupo, ha envejecido particularmente mal.

It's great for this style of music. Very catchy beats and lyrics, they are obviously great singers. It's not something that I would listen to in my day to day life so it was a nice listen.

bootylicious

Not my style

Didn't give the full hour and 11 minutes, but the hits are great. A bit dated. The rhythm on the verses of Survivor is amazing.

liked songs: Independent Women, Pt. 1, Survivor, Gospel Medley Generally good production and layering. The vocals are obviously a strong point, but some of the songs start to get awfully repetitive after 2 minutes. Bootylicious was a very annoying use of a potentially great sample. 3

I was kinda ok with it until the last song. But ultimately, it was a kinda poppy, catchy, well sung album. Not ever going to listen to it again, but didn't hate it.

Classic

Survivor is the third studio album from Destiny's Child, and the first after lineup changes stated in the group. During these changes, Beyonce took control of the group, and eventually moved on to her solo career. The album was an international commercial success, but has met with mixed commercial reviews. The group's songs fly on the incredible voices of the members, the melodic "nods" found throughout the album, and the message of feminine empowerment. The critiques focus on the very formulaic dance tracks, and content that rarely wanders beyond "dis tracks."

It's perfectly fine for what it is, and by the sound of how it was made it had better be good or else what was all that effort and infighting for? Turns out this band was not much fun for anyone who wasn't related to the manager, which sucks, but being a child of a certain age it's hard to not have nostalgia for Independent Woman and Bootylicious

Destiny's Child were iconic, obvi, but after "Nasty Girl" I got the ick big time... It's definitely a product of it's time, but recovering from that cringe was a tough one on this album. Kind of brings the bopping to a screeching halt, and never recovers. 2.5/5

there are quite a few bangers on here to be fair. a LOT of fairly bland, cookie cutter RnB tunes though.

Kelpo kappaleita, mutta omaan makuun aika paljon filleriä. Kohokohdat 5/5, mutta kokonaisuus 3/5.

Singles = Incredible Rest of album = Filler

It's more like 3.5 stars for me rather than 4. Idk why. I like a number of songs off it too.

First half of the album is amazing, but the whole record is let down by the second half of it - it drags on too long and ends up in a series of RnB ballads clustered together and crowned with a rather cringe Gospel song at the end. But had it only contain the fist half or at least interwove some of the later ballads it would have been a stellar record. Still the songs are bangers and meaningful and hold up today - the three members of this outfit kicked ass back in the day.

Beyoncé before she was Beyoncé. This is a really great pop R&B record to bring in the 2000s. The vocals are beautiful, the production is catchy, and it promotes female independence and women’s rights. I’m with it.

Badass but not my sound :(

Music by committee strikes again. Largely uninventive and par for the course pop r&b. Aside from its standout singles, this album is a wash of mediocre to bad song writing with performers stronger than their material, and to boot, it lasts 20 minutes too long. In light of the sea of pop r&b that developed in the 90s, more is required. I won't be fooled by an enjoyable cookie cutter. A cookie in the shape of a dinosaur is fun, but if there's no sugar in it, what is the point? But at the end of the day, I get it. It's an enjoyable genre, so enjoy this flawed child of it if you so choose. My rating is certainly on the nicer end of the band of reasonability. I just won't lie to Farrah Franklin, Michelle Williams, and the other one. 5.5/10 Favorite Song: Dance with Me

independent women 1- 5 survivor- 5 bootylicious- 6 nasty girl- 5 fancy- 5 apple pie a la mode- 5 sexy daddy- 5 perfect man- 5 independent women 2- 6 happy face- 6 dance with me- 5 or 6 my heart still beats- 5 emotion- 5 brown eyes- 6. the chorus hits. just got a vision of cain singing this so i might now be biased dangerously in love- 5 the story of beauty- 5 gospel medley- 5 outro- 5

Some decent songs, and some really wierd ones. Maybe i’d like it more if i was a women

I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit. The beat on the outro was hilariously bad though, DJ toenail could’ve done better.

Honestly, I really did like this album for the most part. Some really catchy songs I’d definitely listen to again. Didn’t like the religious shit for the final few songs, kinda came out of nowhere. Was a 4 now a 3.

Some gems hidden in some slop

A decent R&B/girl-pop record. Captures the pop sound of the early 2000s and influenced many pop outfits of the decade. Every song is catchy with melodious hooks and sing-along lyrics. Not very exciting or interesting but still fun and groovy to listen to. Loved the songs Independent Women Pt.1, Apple pie à la mode (favourite), Dangerously in Love and Brown Eyes.

Some bangers, but nasty shows us how far we have come since this was released

Solid first half, weak back half. A few classic songs from the early 2000s, but needed to be 17 minutes shorter.

Now, this album speaks to me. Especially such hits as Bootylicious, Nasty Girl, Sex Daddy, and Perfect Man. Beyonce has an amazing voice. The lyrics are repetitive at several points, which is a negative, but overall the vocals make up for it. 3.

This definitely sounded of its era to me in terms of production, and Beyonce's voice also sounded younger. Listening to this transported me to my late teens when this album was everywhere. Listening today, I felt the production seemed unfocused some of the time with the vocals getting buried under the beats. Beyonce has a good voice, but a lot of what she does here is vocal vamping and runs, while the backup singers are more so holding down the melodies. There were a lot of memorable anthems on here--none of which ever really spoke to me on a deep level. But I can appreciate the themes of empowerment and resilience and see that they could hit deeply for others. On the other hand songs like Nasty Girl and Fancy are critical of women so seem out of place with the theme.

Ive never listened to a Destiny's Child album. I'd kinda dismissed them as a superficial pop group when they came out. Listening to it all these years later though it's definitely different sounding from a lot of r and b that was out at the time. Still not really my type of r and b but overall not bad.

☀︎pas pour moi mais j’aime la vibe

Starts strong but feels the same to me after a while

2.5 rounded up for nostalgia

It’s a good album. Just not for me.

3 big singles, I still don't like Survivor, and then meandering attempts to recreate that success.

Incredible singing with tight harmonies, great production and all-around wonderful performances throughout. A pleasure to listen to, although this type of music is not my go to genre. That being said, "Happy Face" lifts my spirits high. I'll be adding that to my Happy Tunes playlist.

First four tracks were banging. If it kept that quality it’s easily a 4-5 star. Unfortunately it dipped after that and I HATED Brown Eyes and everything that cane after.

Talk about front-loaded - it begins with three all-time bangers, but then gets a bit patchier (and surprisingly slut-shamey).

I totally forgot that my weekly Italian night dinner song was inspired by this album: "I don't think you're ready for spaghetti, I don't think you're ready for spaghetti, I don't think you're ready for spaghetti, my pasta is too delicious for ya babe" Thanks Destiny's Child for helping me annoy my family since the 2000's. 3/5

Kicks off with a bunch of bangers, followed up with what feels like rom-com-ready r & b. Bit of a mixed bag, fine overall

A commercial success but it's really not that great.

i don’t even know what genre of music this is. maybe just a heavy mix of pop and R&B? some good stuff here and there but overall nothing special and a little too god-heavy for my liking

High-end R&B very much rooted in its time – and not at all timeless. It's way too showy and tries way too hard generally, and will cause precisely no one to forget Aretha or the Supremes or, lord knows, Mahalia Jackson. Easy one to skip and one won't need to hear on one's deathbed or, most likely, any sooner.

Besides the hits, it's only kind of okay. 3.5 bumped down to 3.

An album of high highs and very low lows. It gets off to a great start with the first 3 tracks, but then fumbles with a slut shaming song that completely goes against the theme of what we've heard so far. And the album ends with 25 mins of terrible ballads, an a capella gospel song and then 4 minutes of them thanking each other.

***A good album. Many tracks sound alike.

Yeah, OK. They sound great, and some of it is really fun to move to, but overall it's not a genre that I enjoy.

This is one of those few albums where I regret reading about it as I listened to it, mainly because all the tedious drama surrounding Destiny's Child changing lineup (and the purported source of the album's title) and all the call-out and tear-downs in the tracks (which I wouldn't have caught if I'd just listened) really tinges my appreciation of the album. On the other hand, it's not a particularly interesting album (to me), so I *do* appreciate reading that Beyonce was far more involved in the writing and producing of most of the album than I'd have guessed otherwise. I just wish that our exposure to Beyonce in this collection was her more recent--and far more interesting and creative--albums (thankfully we *do* get her 2013 "Beyonce" album, but not her more recent releases). This Destiny's Child offering doesn't really fall into that category, and the videos for the singles on this album only reinforce this, sadly. ("Survivor" and "Nasty girls" in particular, although "Independent women, Pt. 1" had the unfortunate result of reminding me of how awkward the movie "Charlie's Angels" was.)

It sounds a little dated now. Emotion is a great tune and a real precursor to Beyonce's solo stuff

An era defining album but gets tiresome after a whole album.

Day418- who knows how people will judge this in fifty years but it’s better than some albums i’ve heard on this list

Nostalgic but not my style

You nasty girl you nasty you trashy you classless girl you sleazy you freaky

It’s objectively funny to start a commercial album with the theme song from a movie. First three songs are absolute bangers then it starts to get repetitive. Overall a *pretty good* listen.

Kakav blast from the past!

Survivor And Other Assorted Girlboss Songs I think the inclusion of this on the list is the novelty more than the album itself. The overall style and presentation is definitely very cheesy & gaudy but can't really be taken too seriously given the genre. A lot of samey tracks once it is done with its more front loaded first half. Also I get that it's pop music so it's inherently going to be more commercialized than some of stuff on this list but the Charlies Angels tie-in stuff really made this feel like more of a product than anything I think I've listened to on here so far. That being said it also made it pretty funny

Three bangers at the start and then they start hating on women in Nasty Girl?! What the fuck

Starts off good. Gets really shit towards the end. Lyrically dated

Histórico para un pequeño sub set de personas por allá al inicio de los dos miles, pero su presencia en los charts es innegable. Cómo álbum de pop r&b va muy bien también, aunque la producción no ha envejecido muy bien.

I didn't care too much for this album, but the hits are undeniable. After listening to it all the way through, I'm wondering, was Destiny's Child specifically used as a launching vehicle for Beyonce's career? Because I honestly couldn't tell you one moment on this record where the other 2 get to shine.

Much more my daughters' jam than mine, but three obviously talented ladies.

Decent listen

This wasn't too bad. Just sounds really dated, cool though. Like a 3.5.

2/4/25. Still a classic and fun to listen to all thes years later! Not my favorite genre, but still have many of the words in my head.

I liked this more than I thought i was going to, though it's ridiculously front-loaded and tails off a bit after that. The first three tracks are pretty great though.
