Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Inconsistency is the word that first comes to mind. Some good pop/rnb songs on this one but also some songs that I wasn't bothered about. A nice discovery was Emotion, a cover version of the Gibb brothers song. All in all a pretty good album.

Some standout tracks, but overall pretty standard late 90's/early 2000's R&B.

Solid 90s pop/r&b that reminds me of my sisters. Not bad overall, but afterwards I understood why Beyoncé went solo.

Maximalist R&B purely of its era, obvious in intent, fairly cheesy in execution and clearly intended toward a mass market (and thus disposable). Still, it's okay-decent ("Independent Woman" is best cut). The Gospel medley is unconvincing – Mahalia rolling over in her grave. But it's improbable that one will ever be listening to this again. And it's worth asking if or how or just how much this genre has advanced. One thinks not very much. This is/was a record worthy of nixing.

I’ve never heard Nasty Girl, hilarious! Comedy!!!!!

It's important in the history of Beyonce and the early 2000's, but the album is a bit long.

Pretty incoherent as to theme. Are those girls nasty or are they independent?

This was fun. The first half has a lot of bangers and although I don't like the sound of 2000s pop, this was a fun listen

After meeting Len’s 7th wife, Karen. I’m not sure anyone’s too Bootylicious for him! 3.4

A definitive album for the genre at that time. The hots are well known but the rest of the album felt like filler

N.Y.E. 2024 HL: title track, “Bootylicious”, “Dance With Me”, that acapella gospel ting Some of the best 2000s pop ever mixed with some of the most boring

I’ve lived in Houston for a majority of my life, but I’ve never listened to this album, which I guess might make me a shitty Houstonian. I remember Destiny’s Child really starting to get big maybe a year or so before this album came out, and I know the title track really well (it still slaps over two decades later). I’m not a Beyoncé superfan by any means, but she does have some stuff that I like. Also, how great is it that I get this album on Christmas day, when Beyoncé is playing the halftime show at the Texans game today? I’m not huge on R&B or pop music from this era, but I thought this album was fine. Yes, its impact on culture and music as a whole was monumental, but in my opinion, a lot of the R&B albums from this era are just too damn long, and somewhat boring as a result. The overall sound is okay, and I think Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle work really well together. All three of these ladies have really great voices and the performance chops that really made Destiny’s Child soar. Musically, there just wasn’t a lot about this album that I found that noteworthy. The obvious exceptions to this were the title track and “Bootylicious,” which uses the guitar riff from “Edge of Seventeen” in a really brilliant way. There were some other moments that were fine, but some of the songs felt really out of place with the majority of what was going on. Lyrically, “Nasty Girl” was the best song on the album. I was reading that this song caused some controversy when it came out, but I think it’s brilliant, and I love it when female artists push back on the ridiculous standards that women are held to. This album certainly wasn’t my favorite, but it deserves to be on this list due to its influence and cultural impact. I don’t think I’d listen to it again, but “Survivor” and “Bootylicious” are really fun jams.

In between writing and recording Survivor in 2000, Destiny's Child made the decision to pull a Wu-Tang and work on solo projects to be released shortly after. For Michelle Williams, that meant a 2002 gospel R&B album that did well on the gospel charts but found little success elsewhere. Meanwhile, Kelly Rowland found a hit with Nelly on Dilemma, which led to her album being slightly rushed in order to capitalize on the single's popularity. Her album Simply Deep did particularly well overseas, but that album's quality took a hit as a result of it being rushed. Beyoncé Knowles took the longest of the three for her solo effort, as she was busy co-starring in the latest Austin Powers movie (one of her first forays into acting) but would eventually release Dangerously in Love in 2003. Knowles dropped her last name from here on out and found unbridled success above and beyond the other members of Destiny's Child. And perhaps this was to be expected. Survivor has Beyonce's creative control all over it. Co-writing all the songs and producing the album as well, Beyonce had honed her talents and was in the perfect spot to launch her solo career. At it's strongest, Survivor has bonafide R&B hits like the first three tracks. At it's weakest, it's fairly competent but nothing special. Not to downplay the other members of Destiny's Child, but Beyonce really is the show-stopped here. Here vocal delivery and presence on every track is notable, and on top of that she was basically the whole package in live performances: the look, the moves, the charisma.

shows it’s age production wise, but it’s a well made album. was not expecting the edge of seventeen sample on Bootylicious

I grew up with this and thought I was was peak rnb. As an adult I now realise it for what it is. Decent hits but fairly mediocre.

Of course I was familiar with Beyoncé and this group, but I had really never listened to them before. I thought some of these songs got a bit repetitive, but there nothing I really disliked besides the last song. A few of the songs I did like, but I probably won’t find myself listening to this album again. Although I find them to be very talented singers, it’s just not my thing. It is between 2.5 and 3 stars for me…I’ll settle on 3.

Didn’t love it.

The best song are at the start and then it meanders on until the end

When this came out in my teenage years I absolute despised it. My youthful, Australian country music-infused mind thought this was the epitome of obnoxious American trash music. Nowadays, I suppose from gradual exposure, an opening of my once-closed mind, and the realization that much more obnoxiously trash music exists out there, I can tolerate Destiny’s Child. I wouldn’t re-listen any time soon, but I admit to bopping along with Independent Women and Survivor.

Finally an album from my childhood. Would usually rate a 2 but it gets a sad extra star for being nostalgic.

I’m not the biggest Destiny’s Child fan, but I do love me some Kelly Rowland. This album is definitely a classic in their discography for fans, but also one that doesn’t transcend past the period it was released. A very pop heavy album with R&B/Hip Hop sprinkled in, it’s a fun romp but one that I fully understand why it was eventually removed from this list.

better than I imagined, I have to say

As someone who was a fetus when this style of r&b was popular, I recognized all of the synthetic instruments on this albums as the same ones they use for video games. So listening to this album felt like I was fighting Regigigas on my DS while Beyoncé was singing in the background. Also what’s up with all the weird interpolations?? Tarzan boy? March of the gladiators? This album feels like I'm having a fever dream inside of the Wii shop channel.

Beyonce definitely already had her power magic in these early days which took solid pop songs and made them something more. Anthems maybe? Dangerously In Love is the deep cut I'm glad I heard from this album. Some true R&B soul on there. Excellent vocals. I can dig. 2.5

An insane choice to put "Nasty Girl" out as a single, and an even crazier one to put it on the album right after "Bootylicious". Whiplash.

Pretty good. It is incredible how legendary Beyonce was even at the age of 20 here, taking part in the production, writing, and arranging of every original song here. This album is a little bloated and feels a little artificially and commercially pumped up to a full hour when it could've been a tight 40 or 45. The harmonies are godly though and the production is super forward thinking in a (now) super retro sounding way

Probably more relevant for the drama immediately preceding this album and the rise of Beyonce than the actual album itself.

A well produced album but I'm not a fan of the music.

7.5/10

It was alright. 3 stars

Ok so im already a Queen B fan so im a lil biased but ive only ever heard the hits from destiny's child so we'll see how it is Independent woman Pt. 1 Survivor Bootylicious Apple Pie A la mode

Me parece un típico álbum de pop de los principios del 2000,esto no es algo negativo para nada.

The first three songs absolutely slap and then it’s all just a bit forgettable and the tone is really inconsistent. Dangerously in Love is the other standout song, but the version on Beyoncé’s solo debut is better. Nasty Girl and Sexy Daddy are both very cringe, with the former just being pretty mean, and the last two songs are just very preachy. As a vehicle of Beyoncé’s singing prowess, it’s effective, but as an album it’s pretty subpar and really not worth checking out past those three classics

That wasn't terrible. It suffered from the weaker songs. I feel like no pop album should be an hour long, it just hasn't got enough to keep you engaged. For starters the last two songs should be completely erased from history. Didn't ask to go church, didn't ask for a nonsense credits track at the end. Mental stuff. Delete the other faff and it's a decent pop album which offers a snapshot of pop at that time, not particularly to highlight it, but more of a museum-esque "at this point in time" view. 2.5*

The hits still hit but I was never into their deeper cuts (2.5/5)

Usually I find R&B insipid. This was generally better than that, with their big hits carrying some energy and good vibes, but then it fell off. 2.5/5

Not super keen on the production, but it does hold some classics.

I listened to this when it came out 20years ago, it’s good. Not re-listening to it though.

Not bad - wasn’t really feeling the vibe tonight but not complaining.

Some good throw back songs here. I can appreciate their talent and the quality, but not my thing.

Highlights: Independent Women Pt. I Dangerously in Love Undeniable talent, but R&B has never been for me. If this album were a bit shorter I would like it better, but too many of the songs feel like padding for time. Which is crazy because this thing is over an hour long, they had room to cut back. Oh well, I guess I wasn't ready for this jelly.

For the most part, a banger of an R&B album. I gotta say: "Nasty Girl" was seething with such intense internalized misogyny that my eyebrows were in my hair the whole time. It actually made me laugh out loud. And then there's a song later that seems to be about the cycle of trauma after a girl is molested by her stepfather, I guess? There are some strange tonal shifts on this album. I'm not sure I'd revisit in full. Highlights: Independent Woman, Pt. 1, Survivor, Emotion

So this is where international superstar Kelly Rowland got her start

Definitely a solid album, even if its not my cup of tea.

I did not really like this that much, very repetitive and not in a way I liked. they have nice voices and it wasn't offensive or anything but just didn't enjoy it. I think I dont really appreciate y2k stuff

Please don't crucify me for not giving this album a 5/5. It had some bangerz like Independent Woman and Survivor but I struggled to get behind the rest of the album.

It always disappoints me to get these albums with way too many songs. Just release 10 songs and leave the weaker ones to B-sides etc. Beyoncé keeps singing too much of her vocal runs which starts to irritate me. It starts quite well with some of the singles. The Gospel Medley was pretty cool. It’s odd to hear that after listening to songs like “Sexy Daddy” but hey, I’ll take it. My highlight was a pleasant surprise. Not really into this but it had its positive moments. Highlight: “Brown Eyes”. 2.5 stars.

I wasn't expecting to hear such overt Christian themes in this album

early 2000s pop in all its glory

This is pretty good but it's not for me. The first 3 songs all hit the mark but my fave is Apple Pie A La Mode.

I'm not at all the target audience for this, and that's ok. The singles from this album were absolutely inescapable, so it's a testament to Destiny's Child talent that I don't loathe them - generally hearing them come on the radio would be a relief compared to whatever else was getting played to death. Fave tracks - "Independent Women Part 1" from the singles, "Happy Face" from the songs I hadn't heard before...

Started with some bangers and ended with a weird rendition of Jesus Loves Me 3/5

Lot of hits on this album. Solid outing.

Good pop music with an R&B slant. Not my preferred genre but not bad.

This album's ok but way too self-indulgent at 16 tracks. Given how repetitive the sound was, they could have chopped off five or six tracks and had a really good album. Instead, I kept wondering when it was all going to end.

I remember this band and album being a big deal when it arrived, but never listened to it. Listening to it, it's obvious they were talented even then, but tough to deny that knowing what Beyonce has been up to since. Overly long which is a classic issue during the CD era, but this was fine, if not all that interesting to me.

Couple ok tracks. Couple of brutal ones

So long, but still pretty entertaining

Honestly, a 3 is generous. That B side is rough.

Good first 4 tunes the rest is meh

I was very excited to get a pop album and I don’t believe I’ve ever listened to a Destinys Child album from start to finish. In all honesty I didn’t think anything was incredibly amazing however I do see incredible talent but I don’t see a massive amount of influence unfortunately. It was good though and a nice break.

Getting a real hot streak of decent albums lately. Like it’s all 3s give me something I can get enthusiastic about. This is alright though, enjoyable enough.

great at the top but falls off very badly in the second half. Some very bad ballads there.

I was surprised at how well some of the hits had aged. Although it's weird that the first words on the album are name checking the stars of Charlie's Angels, Independent Woman goes hard. Bootylicious also a bop, and Emotion quite a nice slower cut. In between though not much to write home about - ok songs, decent production that again doesn't sound too dated, but couldn't really pull out any deep cuts of note. Fave Tracks: Independent Woman Pt 1, Bootylicious, Emotion 3.3/5

Totally not my thing, but being "forced" to listen to the album I must say it is really well made and the vocals are great (Beyoncé and the others, and their harmonies). Musically not daft either. I got a bit tired of it towards the end but I feel for its legacy it deserves a place among the 1001. Great album if you're into slick, well (overly?) produced commercial, poppy soul I suppose. Not my taste. But well made.

Three bangers to kick it off, plus Emotion later on, but otherwise it’s alright.

Surprised by how religious the ending of the album was. From bootylicious to godbewithus!

Survivor makes a classic mistake in loading the front of the album with absolutely iconic songs that will be listenable for generations to come, and then not being able to follow it up with anything else nearly as good for the rest and majority of the album. Maybe a rich person's problem to have, because a lot of acts would dream of having one song as impactful as Independent Women Pt 1, Survivor or Bootylicious, so you can't knock them for it, but I guess spreading them throughout the hour-long record might've made it seem like a stronger piece of work, but Emotion is the only song that really delivers anything close to it later on and that's a cover. It has a high floor of a solid 3 because of those first three songs but I don't know that the rest of it pushes it up to a 4, even though the group and Beyoncé were elevated into superstardom off the strength of those songs. Anyway, it could've been a lot better, they showed their strengths and then didn't do enough of it.

Yeah, this album is too long, and too dull for most of the hour. Gets off to a solid start (probably the 3 Destiny's Child songs I know best?), but after that there's really nothing that catches the ear. It's tonally very strange - flits between songs that are very much girl power focused, but gets pretty close to slut shaming in a few places too.  As Phil says, the strength of the start gets it a 3, but can't be giving it anything more than that.

Not every song works and its commentary on feminism is unrefined, but I do appreciate the sassy energy the girls bring

Dominated by Beyonce, but that's not a criticism. Contains such classics as "Survivor" and "Bootylicious", but apart from "Gospel Medley", the other tracks they all to blend into each other.

This is what I thought it was. Came out strong and then faded into oblivion.

Meh. I knew a couple of the songs because of how famous they are, but this just isn’t my style of music.

This album goes kinda hard, my favorite songs are Bootylicious, Sexy Daddy, and Independent Women II. This is definitely more my style of girlbossing, as compared to Taylor Swift from a few days ago. It's pretty poppy, but I like the R&B sound a lot more than 1989s synth-poppy anthems. I wasn't pulled in by every song but there were some real bops in here. 6/10

Decent album.

Did not listen but giving 3 stars 6/10 (3/5)

This was okay. I'll admit, I had assumed Destiny's Child was going to be more bubblegum and less substance, and I was wrong about that. But, in the end, this was too heavy on vocal aerobics and too light on tunes with hooks to do much for me. And, sidenote, I had recently watched a video with guitarist Waddy Wachtel, journeyman guitarist who played the "Edge of Seventeen" riff, tell the story of hearing the Destiny Child tune for the first time where they sampled that riff and being smitten and loving it. I was glad to hear that for myself. I thought it was the low point of the record.

Just beautiful but probably about 4 songs too long.

I won't let the nostalgia overcome my senses. There a bunch of number 1s on here, but I don't really like them. I just remember them.

Decent pop album. Nothing remarkable.

Actually really enjoyed this. Makes me think of the matrix and this sort of grimey 90s sound/ feel.

About as good as pop gets for me

The voices and the production of the voices!!!

Fun, but all the songs felt a bit too similar

First 3 tracks are worth the price of admission, but the rest are not so much

Somewhat judgemental about the Nasty girl, which sends a mixed message on the heels of Bootylicious. Interesting attempt at infiltrating a pop/dance/r&b record with some intellect, and it has some touching moments. Probably aimed at a different demographic, but kind of enjoyed it, even though I'm a proponent of DAD ROCK. Makes sense, their producer is Beyoncè's dad.

Definitely some catchy and memorable tunes. Aside from the pop, not a particularly compelling album and some songs really didn't do anything to impress.

Start is better than the end with the exception of the Emotions cover. It's a solid RnB/Pop album but not my scene.

Knew some of their popular stuff, but was not ready for the Gospel music. That was excellent and unexpected. It very much showed off their voices in ways that I would not have known about just having a passing knowledge of Destiny's Child.

I don't think the intention was to make a good album, which is a shame. The singles are absolute killers.

Takes me back. Catchy tunes, for the most part, but somewhat monotonous on the theme.

It’s very dated at this point, some bops but not for me

Very easy to overlook how mind-blowing Destiny's Child were at the time, especially those first three tracks, which married TLC-style harmonies and melodies with a streak of hip-hop aggression. But, holy crap, the rest is patchy as hell; lots of Beyonce demonstrating her (admittedly very impressive) vocal range to tracks that sound like they were recorded on a child's keyboard.

I used to listen to this record when it first came out and I was a mere lad of 16. Never did quite make it to the latter half though, as the first was laden with bangers. Tracks 1-5 are amazing, then Apple Pie à la Mode destroys the streak with some weird female cat-calling bullshit. After that we have another handful of bangers, and then it goes downhill from there, culminating in the god-awful Outro (DC-3) Thank You, which just seems to be a celebratory circle-jerk. Still, good fun overall.

Lush and expensive sounding, with lyrics which are more interesting than I would have guessed from the singles. Thanking Jésus (& his dad) seems a bit unnecessary, as I don't think either actually had much to do with the success. But all three can clearly sing excellently, and one of them went on to be (arguably) the biggest star on the planet for a while, so hard to be too curmudgeonly! Not one I'll come back to, but probably a worthy inclusion on a list which can be pretty light on massive selling pop artists.

not really my thing, but the harmonies are breathtaking. but i can do without the oversinging that they lean towards when they are singing individually. having said that, they are incredibly talented.

Not my thing but some of this is undeniably catchy.

Hard not to be impressed with these catchy tunes. It may not be my favorite genre but damn...

This era of Destiny’s Child was always so confusing… Who was in the group? Who was out? Who is actually singing on the album? The one voice I can always clearly discern is Beyoncé’s, which isn’t necessarily a good thing because it has a warble to it that I find mildly annoying. But, you can’t argue with the fact that these ladies (in whichever combination) know how to sing and make bops, as clearly this album spawned multiple massive hits. I was actually surprised, however, that this album had such a religious bent to it. Not my thing. And sadly, all the more evidence that conservatives’ hatred of Beyoncé is rooted in racism.

Very strong start to the album and was considering 4/5* for the first few tracks and then it really fell off. The gospel stuff at the end was awful too. Really dragged the whole thing down

Solid pop album. Bit top-heavy. 58/100

I had this album as a teenager. Beyoncé before she became Queen B. I don't think this music would hold as well it it wasn't for the massive nostalgic feels that it brings.

Small 3

Some great songs. Loved the harmonies. Too many vocal runs.

Enjoyed it and love the Houston connections.

Album started off strong but then faded

Feel like this would be 5 stars if it were 40 minutes and they cut out the filler like the gospel medley and the outro where they read first Corinthians lol

Strongest songs were the first three singles. Album let down by Nasty Girl Favourite track: Independent Women pt. I / Happy Face

I enjoyed this for what it was. There are some straight bangers on it but it's still middle of the road for me.

The four opening tracks are all incredible. There then follows 45 minutes of some of the blandest, most mediocre music you'll ever hear.

Some of the greatest R&B tracks ever surrounded by d-grade ballads and some questionable lyrics. I was leaning towards 4 but *juuuust* can't get there

Not really me. It’s ok

Good album, didn't like the end.

A great album for it's genre. Not one that I would graviate to, but the beats are sharp and the harmonies are tight.

Started off hot but lost me towards the middle and end. Some of the lyrics made me laugh. Probably won’t listen again besides the popular songs 2.8/5 Goldman probably loved it though.

Didn’t fully finish it, but I really liked it! I never fully got into the early 2000s musics besides some of the boy bands. Now I see why everyone was so obsessed with this group. They are just phenomenal singers and the harmonies are in point. Favorite song was Bootylicious. Added to my Spotify playlist.

The three big hits right off the bat and then generic filler for the rest. Even the hits don’t hold up very well in lol, sure they are catchy, but lyrically it is simple and repetitive. This is music that I wouldn’t seek out but if I came across a song I might let it play.

i don't know how to feel about the album, like i get it's a product of its time but I really don't think it's aged as well. some of the songs are very badly written. but i give credit where credit is due, the first half of the album has bops! fave song: independent women pt1

I just have no interest in listening to this. I can’t stand people that come off like they they think they are the greatest. Well, aside from Oasis. Beyoncé is very unlikeable. I am giving this 3 stars because I don’t doubt it’s ok. I’m just not listening.

Actually a very sweet record. Has many high points among its very poppy and non-pretentious setlist. Good production that doesn't feel too 2000 in my ears. And of course, great vocals and blend from the girls. Nice indeed

Beyonce was destined to be Beyoncé

So many filler songs. This album could have been 10 songs and been much better. Really want to give it a 2.5 but I am bumping it up to 3 because of Beyonce

some bangers and a lot of filler. could i write poetry to this? n

This album is 100% guaranteed to make women dance together in groups and sing along.

Some bangers buy definitely too long

Favourite tracks: survivor; independent women pt1; bootylicious

Front loaded with some fun ones. Fell off about halfway through and didn't end up finishing.

3/5 not my taste but this had some great songs on it; good energy.

I’m a survivor, lend us a fiver. If it don’t get better, lend us a tenner.

but i'm always ready for jelly lime flavour, preferably

It's good but not great. It's too long. All the hits are in the first 15 mins then it's a way of attrition with those bloody vocal harmonies.

Totally forgot they had a tie-in to Charlie’s Angels. Sounds a little strange these days, considering how big this song was. Beyoncé still sounded like Beyoncé, so far in advance of her solo career. She dominates the record so much, it’s easy to see that she never really needed a group. Never got into this band back in the day. They were a nice follow up to TLC, but without the edge. Must admit, the “rapping” bits here are rather lacking. The music is okay. The best thing on this album is Beyoncé’s voice. While I was never the target demographic for this album, I can understand its place in pop music. It had a big impact and launched a major pop star. Why there is no Whitney Houston on this list, I will never understand.

Finally one I don't dread playing! Too bad its dull for me. The good songs are overplayed and the bad ones are has-beens lol.

The hits are great. The rest of the album feels bloated. Very much a product of its time. You get hints at the superstar Beyoncé was about to become.

This was a weird one. Some incredibly ubiquitous songs. Really inconsistent and sometimes kinda upsetting lyrics. Amazing vocals. Odd choices in the backing music.

This was fine, knew more songs than I expected I thought Bootylicious was the Macarena at fist Nasty girl is very pick me / not like the other girl, but also thought it’s 100% me to me when I’m wearing anything lower than a crew neck The gospel melody and the outro was a strange change of pace from the rest of the album

Only love and respect for Queen Bey, but this isn’t anything more than an average R’n’B album. I’ll go with three stars since there are certified bangers on this album, but it’s really got way too much filler as well.

This may be controversial but I’ve listened to Beyoncé’s Renaissance album repeatedly and admittedly, it’s good. I prefer Survivor though. I enjoy the early range and … naïveté in this better than later Queen Bey. It’s a refreshing and I enjoyed hearing her work as part of a trio than a standalone performer.

I really wanted to love this album but I was pretty disappointed by it. I thought having Bootylicious and Nasty Girl back to back was a truly bizarre choice. Like gurlllllllll you can’t spend a whole song talking about being bootylicious and then instantly jump into slut shaming someone the next song! Wild times in the early 2000s. But I will say, the insult “I don’t fancy you too much” is pretty solid and I hope to use it someday lol

Fun album, I don't know if I would listen to it regularly but I definitely get the appeal.

First three tracks are absolute bangers. As a new father, I can now appreciate why our parents were not huge fans of DC when we were teenagers. Everything is sexy this, bootylicious that.

I actually screamed when I saw this was the album of the day, finally some FRIGGIN BOPPPPPSSSS. While I want to give this a 5 (because these women are KWEENS and Destiny’s Child was my SHIIITT back in the day), I have to give it a 3 because it really falls flat for me after the first few songs! Hard to pick a favorite between Independent Woman and Survivor - I know they’re the most popular but they really are the best. I also wanna say I LOOOVEEE the song Dangerously in Love, but the one from Beyoncé’s first solo album, not this one lol (sorry Michelle and Kelly). It’s kind of hilarious/really off-putting how at first they’re like “yasss independent women!!!” and “yasss bootyliciousss!!!” so you’re feeling all empowered and then you get to “Nasty Girl” which is like “you a nasty SLUT get some clothes on get some pride you nasty FREAK HO!” Likeeee let’s pick a lane here, ladies… I know it was 2001 but slut shaming was never and will never be tolerated in my book! Why tear down women when we could terrorize MEN? So hard for me personally to bounce back from that…

This was so nostalgic for me, so I loved it. The first 3 songs are absolute bangers, the rest of the album a little repetitive and not as great. These poor gals getting cheated on left and right.

Wooo yass queens SLAY

No lo escuche

Some interesting keyboards, especially on Survivor and Fancy but compelling little riffs throughout. Outro even sounds like a Detroit house beat from the 80s. Just too much filler in the middle to be great but this is still a success.

Un album entretenido para pasar el rato. Interesante para conocer los orígenes de Beyonce.

Amazing production but definitely strange

Beyoncé. Nice. I hadn’t heard any of these tracks.

Enjoy their sound. Couple of memorable songs.

A good message through much of the album about being strong and independent women. And some good hits. Well produced and they all have good voices, but not something I’d go back to.

I hate hate hated this in 2001. Thought it was another clone of all the crap R and B doing the rounds. 20-odd years later this sounded like nostalgia and competent singing. Hearing Beyonce before she was bigger than God was quite interesting.

A little on the long side - I listened to the international edition but 45 minutes would have yield a close-to-perfect pop album.

It's interesting listening to this album many years after it was first made, musically it highlights where The whole girl power movement was heading. It's quite a good album, enjoyable listenable but maybe not one that you would go back to time and time again

Survivor is certainly a classic, after a while these are all the same song to me but it keeps the mood up through a snowy work morning

I think this is the best iteration of Beyonce but I'm really just not a Beyonce fan in any capacity whatsoever.

Had some decent songs that were hits when it first released, but I wasn't a fan of the style overall. Seemed kind of "gospel" at times and a lot of songs sounded kind of similar. I could see how someone liked that type of genre would appreciate it though. 3/5

Got a little repetitive in it's sound for me

Consistently good first half (excluding Nasty Girl), back half leaves a lot to be desired.

Halvbra

I had very low expectations, it's not that bad, but nothing more

not totally sure if it has stood the test of time, but its iconic and a good effort. it sinks after its initial punch but its not bad

Great singles plus filler

3.5 Obviously some amazing songs, but the album did feel like they were songs written specifically for Beyoncé with no consideration of Kelly or Michelle’s strengths. And maybe it’s a symptom of the early 2000s, but most of the songs just felt like very long choruses extended over 3-4 minutes. While I appreciated the moments of empowerment, I was shocked to hear the “cover it up ladies, you look like sluts,” (paraphrasing, here) but I assume this is another symptom of early 2000s music. The album also felt very long and I’m just not the biggest fan of early 2000s pop and RnB that maybe it was never for me to appreciate. But I liked hearing clearly early influences of Beyoncé’s later solo albums, and the similarities across two decades. I probably won’t pick up this album again, but will (happily) listen to a few select songs.

This isn't as bad as I expected, but I had very very low expectations. Its catchy at points and seems to be produced fine. Its made me feel like a strong powerful bootlicious woman who don't need no man, but regardless its a 3

General culture

3 absolute bangers out the gate on this album. Side note, what happened to “Bootylicious” and why doesn’t that song get any love any more? But overall, I find this album to be very much a nostalgic time capsule of early 2000s pop. Ciara had a beautiful memory of this album and feeling like it helped her learn at an early age she can be an “Independent Woman Pt. 1” which was very sweet and meaningful. However, the album does get a little weird and churchy at the end, which knocks it down a peg for me.

Sounds over produced but still good

Lot of filler tracks

This modern era of pop/soul... A characteristic feature is a long list of "personnel" with barely any recognizable instrument credits but a whole lot of things like "production" and "programming". I see the appeal and there is some real artistry to be found here, but it's not really my thing.

I didn't expect to like this, and while I didn't dislike it, I haven't changed my mind.

Excellent pop music. I really enjoyed this, although I am probably not the target audience. Great production, great arrangements and the voices work so well together. It did meander a bit after a while, and then it started to drag during the soppy bits: an hour plus is too long for a pop album - or pretty much any album, but this did have its moment, especially the front-loaded singles.

I really love this kind of production that sounds like Darkchild (even if it is not produced by him) and just RnB in general with great vocals and runs like this, but some songs are so corny and void of personnality, like Nasty Girl, Sexy Daddy and Emotion. Shoutout to Apple Pie à la Mode and Fancy for being great underrated hidden gems

5/10 that was actually a really wonky album I’m kind of surprised with how weird the composition is in many of these songs

A good 2000s R&B album. The life before Beyoncé was destiny’s child. This was a classic on the radio when it came out. Now you hear survivor or some other song on this album for some woman empowerment segment in tv or movies. The first few songs started strong but it lost some momentum halfway through. 6.4/10

This album opens with a bang, Destiny's Child's string of hits from the resolute Independent Women and Survivor to the party-tastic lexicon-expanding Bootylicious. Destiny's Child were a key pillar of late 90s/early 00s music and whilst not in any of my go-to genres, this was an enjoyable listen.

5/10. I think I'd have liked this album more if it was a bit shorter. Definitely had some strong songs, though.

Felt nice to have a good but not great album to listen to today. 6/10

Pop. Intrascendente

Heard before: some Love the harmonies, lyrics, and Timbaland-era production. On the right track, it's a nice balance, makes for some great pop/R&B singles. Reaching beyond that, on some of the ballads especially, it's a little dull. And this should be Example A of 2000's CD track bloat; it would be so much better as a tight 9-10 tracks. Top tracks: Bootylicious, Independent Woman, Perfect Man

It's ok I guess

Good album, couple of big hits for Destiny's Child from the early 2000's.

Question … How is it possible this album is more than 20 years old?

I thought I was going to give this 5 stars after the first three songs (their hits) but after that it got pretty generic, boring, and repetitive. Lots of great moments but nothing that sustains an entire song. 3.5 stars and that was heavily weighted by the first 3 songs, although the cover of "Emotion" was pretty cool too.

I gave TLC three stars thinking it was destiny's child... Now I have to be fair and give three stars to destiny's child, thinking it is TLC...

Meltiness is an outstanding feature of this Destiny's Child lineup, hits obscuring whether or not it works as a genre virtue. The tracklist's approach to mutability re: religion, sex, and power is unique in direction at least. The end isn't a salvific moment; It leaves us richer if not changed in quality. And that's a decent summation of ends vs. middle, musically, to boot.

Talent, theres no denying it, but long, repetitive and very simple lyrics. Each song could have been trimmed about 30 to 45 seconds of repeat chorus.

Great two opening tracks, so many memories, every club would play those songs over and over again. Very sentimental stuff. But then, listening to the rest of album, it's basically Beyonce version 1.0. If you remove the aforementioned two songs from this album, it sounds like a very early Beyonce record. To add to that, most of the beats and melodies don't hold up that well, it really sounds very generic. Mixed feelings about this one, great, sentimental tracks, plus a lot of disappointment. I'll give it a 3/5, but I feel like it might be a bit too high of a note.

3.5/5 The first few songs are amazing, (and I knew them), but then it slowly devolved into 5 minutes of vamping and soloing. There was very little breaks in the music to let your mind rest from words and ears rest from singing. It felt like what the kids say nowadays, "They were doing too much."

This started out super strongly but then rapidly declined. Can't knock the vocal prowess and group harmonies but the songs were too God bother-y for me.

"Survivor" by far the biggest hit on the album. Overall I thought it was nice; quintessential early 2000s pop and sounds a bit dated/didn't stand the test of time but that's the case for alot of pop music. Starts off strong but peters off as the album progresses, which also is too long IMHO (and I noticed at least one cover in "Emotion". Outstanding vocals all around though. 6/10.

The first three tracks on this are as good as the first three tracks on any album in this book, but it absolutely careers off a cliff after that. Dreadful early 2000s production and lyrics that make you cringe so much your chin touches your forehead. An extremely generous 3, based purely on the first 3 songs 👍🏾

3/5. A solid collection of pop songs but there seems to be a general uneasiness and a lack of confidence in the songwriting and vocals. There is potential here but some amateur singing as well that makes the record fall flat.

Look, I'll be the first to admit that there's probably a need for more power girl anthems in the world. And "Survivor" definitely does its part to put 'em out there. But every track is pretty much the same: a semi-aggressive, anthemic beat with wailing vocals over top. There's very little variation and almost zero instrumentation. It's an album built by producers, not musicians. The liner notes back that up with dozens of people credited as producers, mixers, programmers, and songwriters but only a handful of actual musicians. You would think that, with so many peoples' hands on it, the album would be varied and interesting but it's not. Not even a little. The whole project is incredibly synthetic. It's nothing but cookie-cutter songs and assembly-line production. That's not to say it doesn't have it's bangers. "Survivor" comes off the bench swinging with tracks like "Bootylicious" and the eponymous "Survivor" but it quickly looses its sparkle by track 5 or so where it becomes clear that Destiny's Child is a one-trick pony.

Eh. Not good, but not bad.

The songs just seem so... sterile. That's probably the autotune, but there's no grit here. Even with songs like "Sexy Daddy" (yikes), they just don't have an earthy quality too it. "Survivor"... I always felt the chorus was WAY too repetitive on that song. "Independent Women (Pt. 1)" (didn't know there was a part 2, and there's probably a reason for that...) still works really well. The Gospel Medley... again, with the autotune, it just doesn't SOUND real. Listening to one of Beyonce's later albums we had rated... there is more of a bite to it because she wanted that there. This just feels so manufactured, thanks to that autotune and it just left me cold throughout. The artificial drum sounds didn't help either. So yeah, it just hasn't... aged well.

There is clearly a superstar songwriting team doing business here, and when these girls work together their name is certainly fitting. But the huge streak of mean-spiritedness in this record dampers it, especially because it's the type of animosity directed outwards while trying to look like the better person. That just never sits well with me, personally, and makes the more uplifting or upbeat tracks just feel hypocritical.

As is probably going to be the case with at least 50% of this list, this is not one of my genres. Still, it's obviously very well done. If it was my kind of thing, it'd be higher than a three.

Heard the singles of course, but never listened to the album. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I would prepare for something slick and digestible, but there was depth and complexity

A classic

Truly the Beyoncé show, the album that just showed here is a superstar with backing singers. There was no way the producers would let the others shine. Goes the way of so many r and b albums - huge bangers to open, filler to close. But the bangers are huge and worthy of the extra star. And this is the Beyoncé show.

first listen solid album, the production is a little lackluster

Not bad, lovely voices and harmonies and most tracks good to dance to. While I won't be rushing out to buy this, I recognise that it is a classy dance album, well produced too

Early Aught's Pop is fine

Pop comercial. Ni fu ni fa.

3.5/5. Pretty good, but it's kind of all the same.

Carried by its first three songs, yet the rest of the record doesn’t provide much else.

Good album as you’d expect from the other Knowles girl !

Today's album is an R&B/pop album by a powerhouse group of women, Destiny's Child. This is where Beyonce got her start. All three of these women are experts of their craft, and the harmonies that they can create are things of beauty. This is Destiny's Child's third studio album, and it suffers from being front loaded for sure. The first three songs are absolute bangers, but after the halfway mark on the album, it kind of settles down into a boring run of the mill R&B record. All the "in your face, unapologetic girl power" attitude is lost, and the slow ballads begin. Overall, not a bad album, but also not a stellar performance. If the pace that was set at the beginning of this album had been maintained, this would easily have been a 4 or 5 star record. Favourite songs: Survivor, Independent Women (Part 1), Bootylicious, Sexy Daddy, Nasty Girl, Happy Face Least favourite songs: Apple Pie a la Mode, Independent Women (Part 2) 3/5

I was worried Destiny’s Child would’ve exhausted themselves starting off the album this strong. While they sure seem less inspired along the way Survivor still manages to keep me rather involved throughout - mainly due to Beyoncé’s pipes.

Starts decent then really finishes poorly. The last 4-5 songs just drag the album out and don’t offer much. 5/10

It's easy to see why these ladies dominated the charts.

Though there are several decent tunes, none of which are called Survivor or Bootylicious, i do not dig Beyonce's voice, so any album that contains it is a headache

The first three songs are ubiquitous. The rest were fine.

YAS! ICONIC! Some real duds on here mixed in with the songs that are eternal.

Highlights: "Fancy," "Bootylicious" One of the things this album gets right is polarizing its jams and slow songs on either side of the album. 90s-00s R&B is so hyperactive you don't really want to be jerked back and forth tonally between what are effectively two different styles of music. The beats can be pretty ridiculous at times; I always get a laugh out of all the Scooby-Doo auxiliary percussion in the prechorus of "Say My Name," and here you also have some incredibly goofy stuff like the dog chew toy going off the entire time on "Sexy Daddy" and "Independent Women Pt. 2" superimposing the Carmen theme over a staccato flute and xylophone unison like a Tom and Jerry episode. Unintentionally hilarious. There are problems with Beyonce that extend to Destiny's Child. One is that there's always a gap between her awesome ability and the music she puts out; she compromises more than she needs to for the sake of commercialism. If vocal melismas are the meat of this era's R&B, like guitar solos in 70s-80s rock, Beyonce is strong but safe, like Stevie Ray Vaughan. The most interesting thing you'll hear is an 'outside' riff she uses twice that's lifted off 1998's "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica. You're not going to get that kind of excellence here. One way Beyonce does not play it safe is rhythmically. Once you notice it, you can't really unhear how her rapid verse delivery steps all over the beat. I would feel sorry for the producer that tried to quantize and sync all that, but nobody tried. Who's going to tell *Beyonce* that she has to do twenty more takes to stick the landing on each of these? In spite of all these things, by virtue of raw talent and skill, a good standard at the tail end of a golden age for R&B.

Some great songs, but nearly all overstay their welcome * Independent Women, Pt. 1 * Survivor * Dance With Me

Reading up about Destiny's Child, no wonder I didn't get into this. I mean, sure, this wasn't the section of the record store I was in generally, anyway. But also - it seems like across the first three or four albums the group kept dropping and adding members. I can't follow that kind of stuff - I need a rock solid group of people that I'm listening to. Beyonce wasn't Beyonce yet so that didn't mean anything to me. So anyway. This is pretty sharp. Remember a few days ago when this list tried to tell us that the Neneh Cherry album was a must-hear? And is it supposed to be on the same level as this? Because it isn't. Beyonce could deliver pizza and make it feel like a premium experience. That said, there seems to be a lot of calling out folks who I don't know - from what I read it's about the former members of the group. I don't know - I don't need all that shit. It makes everything seem petty, like an album based on some reality show. Real Housewives of Destiny's Child. Pretty disappointing. "You know who you are" is a piss poor lyric. Still, it's Beyonce, so like it probably could be 4 stars, but all that weird in-fighting bullshit throws it down to 3.5, so then it becomes a 3.

Classic pop. Really an iconic album for its genre, but it's not something I would own or actively seek out.

Catchy tunes. Great harmonies. Not exactly my thing, but I get why this was so popular.

I grew up with this album and wanted so badly to love it again, but it just doesn't hit aside from a few songs.

Great voices and enjoyable to listen to. Not really a fan of putting all the hits right at the beginning of the album. Makes it feel like it peaks really early and then simmers out. Don't think the rest of the album is bad. It just dies down pretty quickly from a great start.

Hyvin epätasainen albumi (mikä se Happy face -juttu oli), mutta alkaa hyvin ja nautin

I'm not really the audience for this, but there's some solid hits on here. 3/5

It was a good idea for Beyonce to leave this group.

It was obvious from the jump that Beyoncé would become a superstar, but Kelly and Michelle certainly aren’t slouching on this collection of belters. The front half is much stronger than the back.

Wow, really surprised with this album. I know the hits, but the other songs are quite good. Crazy. I thiught i would hate it, but ended up totally respecting it. 3.5/5

It is SO funny to sing about independent women who can buy their OWN diamonds without needing a man, and about how hot your booty is, before launching into "Nasty Girl" and shaming a woman for not wearing clothes and telling her men won't respect her. Let that nasty girl have her tits out if she wants!!!

J'y suis parfaitement indifférent

le genre de rnb qui me saoule un peu

"Apple Pie À La Mode" made me mad. So when I say this about girls I'm a creep but when a woman does this it's an album you must hear before you die. I like the genre, but there are no bangers on this album

First few songs are good then drops off like a cliff

Pop music from a genre that’s not up there for me would normally get a lower rating but they do sign well and I get that this was influential. So . . .

There's a handful of well-written tracks (like Survivor or Fancy) with choruses that stay with you and I like the interplay between the different vocalists, not that I could tell them apart. Overall I find the sound a bit one-dimensional with similar themes, but I guess that's R&B for you - the packaging is as important than the content. Beyonce's material these days is more eclectic, maybe due to the fact that she has more artistic control and isn't afraid to take chances.

There are certainly far worse albums on this list, and far worse albums with disappointingly better global ratings. That being said, I just have never really bought into the Beyoncé hype. I think she is a good singer and certainly very damn attractive, but just not as good as the overwhelming hype she gets every time a single word leaves her mouth. The first three tracks have all become classics, the titular song having gained an unintentional but extremely powerful message behind it. All in all it is a very mediocre album that even though it isn't my thing I can at least understand why it made the list.

Decent, but liked the second half a lot better than the first half

So many of these songs were huge, kind of a preview of Beyonce in her final form. For pop it's servicable but I definitely don't wanna hear it.

Some classic hits. Never heard the intro to bootylicious before. Honestly though all these songs sound exactly the same to me. Apart from the nostalgia I personally really don’t like this style/era of production. Everything sounds so squashed and sterile and digital. The percussion loops/samples are so robotic and the vocals are so processed there’s just barely any human aspect to this music. I know I’m not the target audience for this but I’m just not interested or excited about anything in these recordings. 2.5

Very nostalgic

A milestone in vocal arrangements, I guess. This isn't my thing. But I seem to remember how different Destiny's Child was back in the day. We weren't ready for that jelly. But seriously, it kind of peters out as it goes along. They tried a little too hard to follow their survivor "concept".

Great but not my jam

man they wrote some big hitters. not my personal taste, but no denying, they did what they did very well.

Pop comercial. Ni fu ni fa.

Great pop, catchy and straight into the three mega hit singles. Drifts off into weak slushiness towards the end, but the majority is good upbeat pop. 3.5

There are some classic tracks here, most notably "Independent Women Part I," "Survivor," and "Bootylicious." That said, those are the first three tracks, and there's a LOT of filler after that. And does anyone else find it mildly ironic that "Nasty Girl" is the track after "Bootylicious," or is it just me?

Fine for what it is. Not really my bag at all, but it was nice to listen to during the work day. Change of pace.

Beyoncé carrys long album tho

Could be worse, could be better. I like the song survivor but besides that not super into it

Not my thing. Too poppy.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Survivor (2) 2 - Bootylicious 3 - Independent Women Pt. II

Not my thing but it’s an excellent example of its genre at the time.

it's OK, fun songs, although a bit repetitive. I don't like Beyonce.

Classic millennial R&B. Vocals are lovely. Arrangements are very much of that era, but excellent. Starts really strong, but overall it gets old pretty quick. Fave Songs: Independent Women Part I, Survivor, Emotion, Dangerously in Love, Bootylicious, The Story of Beauty

A fair number of good singles but there's not really an album feeling to the whole thing.

Better than I thought it was going to be. This type of music is definitely not my thing but there are some good tracks here, even outside of the mega hits that really frontload the album. After the midpoint, the songs get steadily worse culminating in the second last song being a straight-up Christian song, and last song having some Christian elements but is mostly just some kind of childish listing of all the reasons why each of the 3 members are friends, which I found very strange.

Rekla bi da je album ostario dosta graciozno i ne zvuči loše u ovim ušima iz 2022. ALI je jednostavno predug. Druga polovica albuma se čini ko jedan ogroman filler cak i za nekog ko zna vecinu pjesama.

This album might have hit better if they had spread the hits out instead of front-loading them. As it is, you get 45 minutes of filler at the end and it leaves a sour taste. Best track: Survivor

Album starts very strong, Survivor is a banger. The ending is a bit boring

First couple of songs are absolute bangers. Kinda loses its edge after that

3.3 - Uplifting messages of female empowerment. Impressive vocal gymnastics. I like the a cappella “Gospel Medley.” It doesn’t speak to me directly but it’s a good album especially for those struggling with finding self-worth.

Solid pop.

Pop comvocais envolventes e hits da mtv

Not my favorite but definitely some bops in there

Starts out powerful and quickly delutes into standardized songs

It's ok, way too overproduced.

i also survived

"Yes! I'm George, George McFly. You're my density..." Did you know this group's name came from the Lorraine and George (Leah Thompson and Crispin Glover) characters from in Back to the Future? The group, and Beyonce in particular, were big fans of the original Back to the Future film. The three original members (Beyoncé, Gina and Kelly) had intended to call themselves "Density's Child" but management decided against it. Infighting and disagreements with management eventually led to the group's breakup to get out of their contract. Efforts for the three to reform under the name 'The Flux Capacitors' faltered when it was discovered the name was already taken by a band in Sheboygan. This album was fine, best song by far is Beyonce's 'My Heard Still Beats' the thinly veiled ode the brief, but passionate love affair she had with Thomas F. Wilson, better known to some as Biff Tannen in the BTF trilogy.

Some absolute icons in here

First few tracks are great, but a lot of the rest of the album feels flat.

Opens with some bangers but really the later half of this album doesn't offer much to me. 3.5

Was ok

Whoa, can't say I was expecting to see Destiny's Child on the list! Where it all started for Beyonce, her trio with Kelly Rowland and....that other girl (Michelle Williams, but I had to look it up). This is very definitely early '00s R&B/pop music, a style that's obviously dated, but there are some classic gems on here that still hit. And the rendition of the "Tarzan Boy" whooping on "Nasty Girl" was a pleasant surprise! Album started strong, but fizzled out for me. I had no idea, all these years, that Beyonce herself is involved in production on pretty much everything she does, including this album. Considering she's also a credited writer on every song, while Kelly and Michelle do not appear in many of the credits, it's no surprise she would eventually fly solo and become the superstar that she is today. Consider Destiny's Child to be her incubator. Favorite tracks: Independent Women Pt. 1, Survivor, Nasty Girl, Sexy Daddy (hilarious two titles there). Album art: Damn, this is also so dated to that era. The type of shot you'd see in a Backstreet Boys video or something. Undeniably goofy, but you can't be too surprised for what it is. 3/5

There are a fair few undisputed bangers on here. The opening 15 mins is relentless pop gold. The warbling gets a bit much after that, but they keep it interesting with actual melodies. All goes a bit "Disney Movie Credits" at the end. Like a lot of these, could have done with being 15 mins shorter.

No point after the first 3 songs

I was excited for this one. Then Nasty Girl came on and I was like woah. No. Not ok Bey. The singles were a bop though.

This was everywhere when it came out, I guess it was the beginning of the Cult of Beyonce. But it's just rnb pop music. It's not bad, not really that good either. Goes too long. 3/5.

Starts off with some bangers and then gets so square. Maybe a 2

I don't get it, but that's just me.

Filled with some classic pop tunes from childhood. Not something I'll put on again though. 2.5.

Challenging to finish but that's a personal problem. I can appreciate the value of the album. The harmonised and chorussed vocals are really wicked, super tight production and probably stand out for its time. The consistency of theme and vibe across a range of different styles and genres by using consistent instrumentation is clever but it didn't stop the album from sounding same same. Just really not me at all.

was oké… beter dan beyoncé .. will probably never listen again.

dit was fine maar geen fan

Better than Coldplay
