Reviews (page 9 of 15)
Oei, twijfelgeval.
Another classic from my youth that aged spectacularly well...except the funk stuff which I never got. All together a great album though from top to bottom with some of their best songs and concepts.
Good bops from high school
This album is a quintessential 90's record. The poppy upbeat vibe just resonates with me. Most every song has me grooving at my desk, and singing along. There's a heavy dose of nostalgia to this one as well, but I'm trying to temper it as much as I can. Still this one is a gem.
Fun album. Not every song is the best lyrically, but I think this is their best album
Quanti ricordi! Estate 1999, avevo 15 anni. Secondo me Californication funziona.
An album that truly showcases the Chili’s sound.
Classicalifornication
Great album, badly mixed.
I have listened to this album many times before, and it was just as good this time as the first time I heard it. In my opinion a real classic, a more or less a timeless album. I do find myself enjoying the more calm/slow songs a lot more than the more rock/punk songs. There is a lot of things to say about this but to keep it short: A fucking good album.
Still good.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers back to great form and one of their better albums. So many great songs stand out here that I can always come back and enjoy
Classic RHCP! I prefer some of their other songs but it's a good album
Scar tissue
done
I like these guys. Road Trippin most of all, can't wait to get back on the road. Been to long.
I guess I should start rating these... Out of 10, with 4 being average 7/10 The first half is great, but then it becomes uninteresting, the songs mid album just don’t catch my attention much. Favs: Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Road Trippin’
Around the World, Californication, Otherside, Road Trippin' - хорошие, крепкие треки.
This one is a total burner and will go in my permanent rotation.
Californication is a bona fide Chili Peppers classic.
Awesome stuff
Dude great album.
I knew some RHCP songs before this album, but I'd never listened to a full album before. I didn't really get it. Started this album thinking it would be a 3 and moved it to a 4 after repeated listens. It's a very masculine album that embodies the so cal attitude. It's an album made for roadtripping, playing video games with the guys, and just hanging out in the summer. It accomplishes a lot without seeming to try very hard. I respect it for that. four stars well-earned.
Prefer their hit songs
I think this album is probably better than Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Well rounded, rockers and cruisy vibes, but it all flows.
tied for second best album by the ole chili peppers. road trippin and purple stain are the unsung heroes of the album
lots of bangers, most of them I already knew
Fantastic mix of upbeat rock and more composed songwriting. Californication and Scar Tissue are obvious favorites but them and the rest of the first half make the second half pale a bit in comparison, so I rounded this 4.5 down to a 4. Saved: Around the World, Scar Tissue, Californication Easily, Road Trippin'
Their best album. All downhill from here.
This is likely a 4, but let's listen to the whole thing. I generally like the sound... Lots of familiar songs, but not ones that I love -- it is soul-searching, and that kind of overshadows the good funky sound that I like. It would really be like a 3.5, so I'll go ahead with 4/5.
Funk rock cross over. Best Tracks: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue.
Good album, can't believe its 22 years old!
Good album.
Pretty darn good. 4RS
this being a newer album....looks, 1999 WHAT THE FUDGE! Love me RHCP - I saw them in concert with Tammy in 2018. I give this album four argyle socks
I don’t love all of it but this is still a top chili peppers album for me.
Solid 4. Lots of good songs that I would enjoy if they came on, but not much I would seek out on their own
Fun and familiar. Always love the bass
Loved Scar tissue, The Other Side, Get On Top. They are so comfortable switching from rock to ballad to rap to pop. Very talented band and when they lost a member the replacement filled the big shoes so seamlessly. “Get On Top” was a look at how versatile they were with a rendition of a Rap Rock song in the early years of rap. Well done gentlemen. Keep these amazing artist coming. I was ready to jump ship last week this week
Great album overall but has some weaker tracks. 8
Liked it! Fell off a bit at the end but still gets an 8
Yesterday I worked on updating the interior framing schedule, pulling details over from Train A and developing a detail at the stair door intersection. What cant be said about this album... I was probably more motivated by this album then any other ive listened to thus far. My top song was Around the World although I could probably listen to any song on this album no problem.
Low 8 overall. The first half was great, even if the songs sounded kind of similar. But the second half was a lot weaker, and there wasn't even really a strong ending. Should have probably been shorter.
I wasn’t always a pepper head but on one of our road trips my wife and I listened to almost all of their albums as we traveled through Utah and Arizona and I was converted. It was the perfect soundtrack and this album was one of those so it always brings me back to Sedona and the beautiful landscapes and cruising down the highways and byways. This isn’t my favorite pepper album but it is still really good. There is a magical quality to this group, maybe due to the drugs or the skills but their songs are so unique and unlike anything else. They were never afraid to go crazy. My favs are Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Get On Top, Californication, Porcelain, and I Like Dirt. The album cover is iconic and always makes me want to sit by the pool, though idk if I’d swim in it if that was the color.
Cool
It’s got classics but a lot of it is mediocre or annoying. 8
8/10
Iconic sound of 90s alt-rock. Really enjoyed!
So many great songs that I forget are on this album. Makes me want to see them live. Fades in the second half... If I could do half stars, this is 4.5
El arranque es genial: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue Otherside y luego Californication.
I knew some of these but had never listened to the whole album
Emoji Monday: 🌶🍃💆🍃
The first album I've been given that I've heard of before (even if I've never listened to it the whole way through). The title track is as good as it's ever been, and the whole album mostly succeeds in keeping the atmosphere alive. I think it drags a little bit toward the end and if somebody told me this was their favorite album ever, I'd look at them sideways. With that said, it's definitely a good album with a few standouts, it's just not exceptional.
Ok. Not bad, but not my favorite. Bass is pretty badass.
Buenardo
This was the turning point of RHCP before they went rather downhill. This still had the cool classic funk elements
vecchia conoscenza... sempre particolare
Reminds me of high school
SO many hits on this album. I may have burned myself out on a lot of them at this point but I won't knock the album down for that.
Fav song: Californication
Better than I remembered.
something about the red hot chilli peppers is that in almost all their songs something seems … off, but they’re just still so good and I keep coming back to them over and over <3
Go on. Dream of it.
Nostalgi redux
I mean... yes, this is good
Packed with hits. Too good to ignore
Kinda nice, some singles stand out, more of a 3,5/5
Amazing 5 singles, some of the best RHCP ever made. The rest of the album is fine, nothing very memorable outside of those hits, but everything kinda just fits together.
Snazzy bass!
7
First half was much better than the second half.
That was hip! I looooove Flea's sound
Tempted to give a 5 but I’m the end I did find getting to the end of the album a bit of a drag. Interesting to read that it was Frusciante’s return (from skag) that have the band the more mellow and melodic edge. Did not know it was their 7th album and I would have guessed earlier than 99. The biggest surprise though? Kiedis and Mel C! 😮
I never give the peppers enough credit, their shit slaps
Man some really killer songs, classics even, but I think some of the deeper cuts are just kinda meh. Great stuff tho.
Great album
I really enjoyed this album. My knowledge of RHCP was fairly limited, knowing some of the bigger hits including the lead track “Californication” and it’s video. This was a good opportunity to explore the band’s music to more depth- and hear the more spiritual and melodic sound which critics spoke of.
Nice to recognize a couple of songs. It was a pretty good album. 3.5?
1/18 Great Rock album. Standout Tracks: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Emit Remmus, Road Trippin’
A decent start with some heavy bass and catchy tracks however.. My god the second half of the album felt so generic and bland, like a band going through the motions but putting out a safe easy album. I listened twice thinking I was missing something what with the band being global megastars but this wasn’t a global megastar album at all. Decent first half bumps up to just above average 6/10 Best track- ‘scar tissue’ Worst track- ‘purple stain’
Kind of a guilty pleasure for me. 3.5
"Californication" may be one of their best album. This album includes their hit songs "Otherside", "Californication", and "Scar Tissue". I feel first half of the album has good track but I feel some second half track filler and it makes album feel longer. I feel the production level of this album is very bad. Overall, good album of Red hot chili peppers but some track feel out of place and also bad production with sh*t audio quality
Not my thing unfortunately, though liked the odd bit.
I can't fault Flea's funky base, and there are some obvious big hitters on here, but I like a bit more chaos in my RHCP
Surprisingly catchy, surprisingly more… laid-back?… than I expect the Chilis to sound. The lyrics are all inane dip-my-wick business, but Pepper music has always been about the energy of the moment. I don’t follow the Reds. I can only tell you that Flea is in the band but not what instrument he plays. Is Dave Navarro part of the band? I don’t know. Anyway, decent album, too long, goodnight.
So many of the songs on here sound exactly like all the rest. As many others have commented, the first half is really good, but the album begins to get tedious after Californication, and I can only take so much of Anthony Kiedis' voice. Otherside is easily my favorite on this album.
A super mixed album that was overplayed in my teenage years. Some songs are great, but some are terrible and it's a super random jumble.
everything after this album lost me
White boys unite!
This band is growing on me. Road trippin' had always been my favorite since I found it.
Solid stuff, had heard the hits but not the rest. Nothing too gripping for me but not hard to listen to.
A classic, but the non-classic songs are not my speed. 3 feels fair
In case of career emergency, call Rick Rubin.
Would I listen again: yes High 3, I like the guys voice and the less rocky songs were actually my favourite
Enjoyed the first half - it opens with a great run. After the title track it meanders a bit after for me and never really makes it all the way back with the exception of This Velvet Glove and Purple Stain, which are highlights on the back half and it does end on quite a nice, mellow note. You could probably chop a fair few songs of this album and improve it. Still, not bad overall imo. An acquired taste but I think it's quite good fun, particularly the rhythm section
I loved this listen. I knew so many songs from this album but had never listened to them all in order. The seamless genre blending of rock, rap, and funk is more cathartic than any noise wars album deserves to be called. It stood out to me for the first time how much "Around the World" sounds like "Gangsta Gangsta" by NWA. I haven't seen this connection made in any other commentary.
scar tissue fire. got bored after that…. sorry… boring vocals?
i know its a classic, but i dont have fun listening to this album Maybe these songs are a bit too well-known
Impeccably front loaded. Every single big hit is hitched to the front of this album, every one of them a solid banger. A shame I lose interest once we move past Emit Remmus but it’s no slouch. It’s just the alternating gimmick of sex plus addiction/depression and Kiedis sing rapping has worn itself out long before Road Trippin’ arrives.
I do like RHCP a good bit, but I’ve always felt that they are fundamentally a singles band rather than an albums band, which leads to quite a lot of fluff dragging down the overall quality. The hits are undeniable but you could easily trim 10-15 minutes off this and lose nothing of any real value.
This album sounds like Los Angeles, for both good and ill. Even the melancholy songs are sun-drenched. It opens with an all-time stretch of radio classics, a streak that is rudely interrupted by the abrasively juvenile “Get on Top”. The less said about those lyrics, the better. In general, these songs have really great instrumentation but are brought down by shallow off-the-cuff lyrics that sometimes feel like a joke at the listener’s expense. I also think on some songs (like on “Easily”) this band falls too in love with certain guitar riffs, where they stretch a song past the point of tedium and have me reaching for the skip button. It’s hard to argue with that initial streak, from the energetic syncopation of “Around the World” through “Californication”. And I sure do like the cover art. I think this is a really uneven album, but it definitely achieves a consistent mood similar to what the cover art evokes. This is a band who live and breathe LA and this only could have been made there.
This album just isn’t my kind of music, it was just okay, I’ll give it a 5/10
idk had a hard time getting into it. Some bangers but didn't grab me.
starts hot but front loaded. right on time is the only one worth it on the second half
The album after One Hot Minute. I heard plenty from this album in 99 and the early 00s. It's RHCP in decline in my opinion. The songs are all radio friendly and the album was a victim of the loudness wars. And brutally so to the point that it's tough to listen to. I didn't dislike it, but it certainly isn't one I'm going back for.
Couple of bangers, lot of filler. Really good production overall.
3.25? rating albums that feature both songs you definitely fuck with and songs you find simply unpalatable always feels like an impossible feat to me, and yet it’s often how it goes with RHCP… gotta keep on rocking on songs i liked most: - parallel universe - scar tissue - californication - this velvet glove - savior - right on time - road trippin - quixoticelixer songs i found hard not to skip )': - emit remmus - fat dance - easily - purple stain
Amazing 4 song run to open the album. Weak B Side. Mastering makes the album sound very teeny like its playing from a cheap portable speaker. Should be a 3.5. One of my favorite albums when I was 15.
I was looking forward to this as I'd never listened to it as an album before. Found it all a bit breathless. Which is OK.
3,5
I admit to losing interest in the Chili Peppers after the early 90's but loving some of the one off hits. This album justifies that stance. The hits are still strong, if lyrically, ahem, Kiedies won't ever get confused with Keets, but the rest of the album, especially the back half, is very weak.
Would be better with 4-5 less tracks.
like, it's catchy, i get it. it's innovative and defining of a time. i just can't unlearn what i know about this band hahaha. the only thing that draws me to this album is the nostalgia and the bass.
Pleasantly surprised - the opening track didn’t do much for me, but have to say that after that it was pretty good.
A decent sound. Some good, some not so good tracks
More Chili Peppers sounding like the Chili Peppers. Not sure what else can be said.
I don’t know how a band with this much talent makes albums that are so mid. It can be fun to listen to the funkier tracks…but the softer more melodic songs just seem awful.
It’s a classic RHCP album. The first half is great, but it does drag a bit in the back half. It would be better if it was tightened up a bit, but it’s fine. 3.5/5
The singles from this album are great, but the rest of the album doesn't really grab me.
I'm a pepper.
The best of the chili Peppers albums in terms of hits per album. I feel conflicted in them as a band there are some undeniable songs that are still fun to hear.
Amazing rhythm section, interesting and varied guitar parts, and then the dumbest shit you’ve heard in your life being yelled by a pervert
Some really good songs, some just generic boring songs. Could have been great.
Listenable. I quite like some RHCP tracks but a full album doesn't do much for me.
Really falls off after the title track.
There's some catchy songs, but the naughty Dr Seuss lyrics are just so bad!
Men mr.
Good album with a lot a good songs.
Not bad but definitely overrated
This is an album that I owned on CD back when it was released, so I've definitely heard it a lot before. I'm not totally sure that it actually belongs on the list of 1,001 albums to hear before you die, since while it might be the best RHCP album it's probably a less important RHCP album than Blood Sugar Sex Magik. As to Californication itself, it's pretty good. We have three musicians wringing some great tunes out of their instruments, and also Anthony Kiedis is there. There's less of a funk influence on this album, and I think that's reflected in the best tracks being the singles "Scar Tissue" and "Otherside," also Flea's bass on "Around The World" is pretty tasty.
Culturally significant but not for me.
Oregon will forever be better than california. its good and I know its iconic but its missing something. This one is the same situation as watching shrek without lord farquad, its there and still funny but I don't know what its trying to prove. continuing with the soda theme this one is akin to an orange fanta from the can thats been left out in the california sun but youve just been working away in the heat. so the warmness of the drink, although making you slightly uneasy, still satisfies some inner craving
Meh
Wild to put on an album and know 40% of the tracks because you lived through the years 1999 and 2000. Kiedis presents a double-edged sword: on one side he's singing more, and the other side he's rapping more.
what a strange experience
Basically see my review for the previous RHCP album on this list. This album, however, is way more consistent than the other and not nearly as much of a slog. Has some surprising spots and really seems like an excellent representation of bone headed alternative rock.
I learned a new song! Good album.
It is popular (and fun) to rip on RHCP for their nonsensical lyrics and their singer being a freak. But these guys had a choke hold on pop culture for a minute there. Californication was everywhere in the early 00's. Around the World, Scar Tissue, and Californication were huge. I didn't know Parallel Universe before and it was a jam.
I hate the Red Hot Chili Peppers so it says a lot that I like so much of this album. If it was cut down to 10 tracks, it would be a triumph, but there are too many crap funk rock songs with terrible lyrics that sink it.
Good vibes. It has some classics like "Around the World", "Scar Tissue" and "Californication".
I had high hopes for this album. The first half is very good, but boy does it drag on towards the end. Unfortunately that dragged my initial rating of 4 down to a 3
singable songs for some of them i guess. i grew up on this
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I am a huge fan of Blood Sugar Sex Magic but for some reason never gave this a listen when it came out. Maybe because the singles were mostly mellow or maybe because BSSM is Chilli Peppers perfection and has satisfied me for life. This album's got some funk, Frusciante's guitar work is outstanding, Flea and Chad Smith are obviously a killer rhythm section. I just don't fully jive with Anthony Kiedis' vocals on this (and later material I've heard). The funk of BSSM fits his vocals so well but here the songs require that he earnestly try to sing well and that only works for me in smaller doses. Although, I do like his falsetto on Porcelain. 3.5/5 stars, rounding down 3/5 because I don't think I'll ever put it on for a full listen again. I added Around The World and I Like Dirt to my 1001 playlist
I rather liked the instrumentals but maybe the singing wasn't to my tastes. Easily is a non-single highlight
Beloved by many, but not by me
When the Chilis are good, they're so fucking good! The filler on this album really drags it down though, it really outstays it's wrlcome
A couple of good tracks but not a patch on "Mother's Milk" or "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic"
Better than their sex album!
RATING: 3.5/5, solid not my favorite genre but i would listen again. FAV SONG: Californication, i know the title song is my favorite how cliche! and Porcelain, i like the pace change and the softer vocals are nice! DATE: 16/05/2026
I had this album in high school so I have a lot of feelings about it. Objectively, it’s a great band (particularly the bass and drums) and a bad front man. He’s charismatic, but man can someone help him write some lyrics. That being said “fat dance” was my playlist pick. Haha
After some years and listening thrice or more times, I understand, why it's not so bad.
I was about 12 when this album came out and I'm pretty sure this was when I thought I was becoming more "serious" in my music tastes. This album was in permanent rotation for my discman for so many years. Listening to it today makes me laugh, I instinctively started to skip the songs I always skipped after humming or singing the first couple words but managed to stay my hand this time. I was right to skip a good chunk of the songs all those years. The singles of course are pretty good, but you can leave everything else at the door. Also it made me realize how overstimulating this whole band can be, just wonky sounds all over sometimes, the funk rock hip hop vocal style wore pretty thin by the end. All that said, I can see why 12-16 year old me loved it!
Another album by the Pep peps. The singles are great, the rest is annoying hippie poetry over sick bass lines. I just don’t think the Pepsters are for me
Obviously a classic but it definitely can get annoying fast. I was listening to this while I was packing like all day for my summer internship and it was fun at first and I felt like any random dad on an afternoon but then the vocals and sharp guitar kinda hurt my ears. Overall still a fairly good listen and does have a bit of variety.
A lot of songs on this album I'm very fond of (scar tissue, other side, californication), and a lot that I violently hate (around the world, I like dirt). Weird listening experience.
OK, the first sound pretty solid start, of course this is a classic, some of the songs are complete classics, but definitely transported to the late 90s even though I was juts a baby lol A little bit too much hetero sounds for me but i guess is ok once in a while.
I would probably love this if it wasn't for Anthony Keidis' insufferable vocals and how generic a lot of the songs are. The guitar work is great but it's mostly stereotypical rock and nothing special really
--Around the World…”ding ding dong dong deng deng” fuck this --Parallel Universe…bass run is nice. yes, we know you love California, Anthony --Scar Tissue…decent pop --Otherside...my hatred of Kiedis is counterbalanced by fondness for Frusciante and Flea. great guitar tone here --Get on Top...they return to their funkier roots. Flea laying down something nice. lyrics--shockingly--are real dumb --Californication...is California paradise? hell? both? Kiedis is happy to tell you all about it. other than a surprisingly weak guitar solo, this track is pretty complete --Easily...simple but solid rocker --Porcelain...Kiedis' voice actually isn't bad on this LP (relative to his other work), but this is a step (or three) too far for him --Emit Remmus...something a little different. sounds like it could be better if they spent more time workshopping it. as it is now, this feels like four musicians stapling four interesting but disparate parts together --I Like Dirt...the funk is back. seems to be their comfort zone --This Velvet Glove...Flea providing a decent groove but LP is starting to feel long --Savior...definitely repeating themselves at this point --Purple Stain...dammit, Kiedis --Right on Time...don't like the intro at all. Flea saves it as he so often does --Road Trippin'...they throw a curveball with something folky. I appreciate it
i liked the vibe of the album and a few songs
It is what it is. They have a very unique sound, which if you enjoy you’re going to love. It has the same problem I have with most RHCP albums in the sense of I start and think “yeah this is cool” and it gets to the singles and I’m like “yeah this is really cool” and then it keeps going for another 40 minutes afterwards.
Hits are on here, but it also just sounds pretty grating
I love Scar Tissue, It's such a banger. I'll definitely be sharing this with my homies. Either than that, it didn't move me 🤷♂️
SAHINDEWAINDERBAH Well we made it two songs without the Kiedler singing about his favorite subject (underage girls)
Ya know...I dont dislike the pepper boys, but about half this album kinda throws off the vibe of the rest of it.
This screams 2000s. I think that this album doesn’t age quite as well what people think. A few amazing songs in this album but also many stinkers in my opinion. Going to give it a mid 3. Fav song on the album: scar tissue
its alright
It’s not so much music as a vibe. To be fair, it’s a pretty fun vibe though.
This album surprised me listening back for probably the first time since school. I think RHCP have been shite for 20 odd years. But credit where credit is due, this album is ok. There are some really good tracks (otherside, scar tissue, road trippin) and John Frusciante's playing carries it a lot. There are also some fucking clangers (I like dirt) and Anthony Keidis' lyrics are pish. A mixed bag then but not as bad as I thought.
I admire some of the instrumentation and vision, and it succeeds in having a very Californian vibe. However, the vocals can be a bit grating for a whole album, and this is a long one.
I'm honestly a pretty big fan of RHCP, but I've always found this album to be one of their weaker ones. There's some major highlights here for sure, but there's a lot more misses than I'd like. 3/5
i’ve heard this before. haven’t listened to it since like high school though. this album is pretty hit or miss. but the part in emit remmus where he goes “english girl, american man” is one of the most hype things i’ve heard in a song. unfortunately the way he immediately goes to pronounce london pisses me the fuck off. never even realized that’s what he was saying today. i think that section is pretty descriptive of my feelings of this whole album. goes without saying, instrumental is consistently incredible. you don’t get as famous as flea as a bass player for nothing. a bit loud. i have it at like three volume because any louder would genuinely hurt. i can hear everything fine. flea doesn’t get enough props for his melodic playing.
19 year old me loved this album. 46 year old me thought it was OK. Sounded the same especially towards the end. 7.75/10 Top song Otherside
How do I know every song on this album??!? I have no memory of ever listening to it but it was ubiquitous when it came out. For me, this album is all about Flea’s bass playing along John Fruscianti’s guitar. I like their noisier songs, harking back to their older albums. Flea can just embrace the chaos muppet that he is. 56 minutes is on the long side for me.
Haven’t finished it. May not bother. Back in the day, Lady Laplaya and I would have heated arguments about which was the best Chili Peppers album Mother’s Milk (her) or Blood Sugar Sex Magic (me). The argument went (her) “I think the best couple of songs are on Mother’s Milk” (me) “I like the nonstop energy of Blood Sugar.” As I said- very heated. One thing that was never in doubt was, whatever the best RHCP record was, it wasn’t this one. This may be their most successful record. It has some mainstream hits on it. But the whole thing is just that, mainstream and uninteresting. The squares liked it. It maintains one fairly consistent rhythm throughout with mi or changes in tempo. Anthony’s “rapping” is fairly cringe but again, the sort of thing that middle class white people would find to be the perfect balance of fake edgy and accessible. Pablum
This is one of those albums that I don't need to listen to. The ascendancy of their music left me sad, as I couldn't get on their bandwagon... they were party music, but not for parties I went to.
Behållningen är hitsen
I’ve always thought this band was bland and made cookie cutter rock music. I’ll admit, There’s some catchy tunes here and there on this one. But underneath it all, there’s nothing going on here for me. So fucking safe it hurts. (I take gummies and drive a Fiat core) POV: driving with a girl you’ve never hung out with before and are scared to play your real playlist. All that to say, it’s still a solid 6/10. Should’ve given this to me in the actual summer.
- Heroin can create good stuff - Didn’t realize how goofy these guys were - Sounds a little like Tenacious D - Kinda repetitive an then there will be a good song that’s different
Californiacation
Bed cot philly papers?! Red Hot Chili Peppers! https://youtu.be/QT48i51VUBM?si=vk9H4hpSYxJOr0bP I would’ve been excited about this when I was 12, but not anymore.
2.5
Baba Album
Ein paar ziemlich coole standouts.. Ich mag around the world, scar tissue und porcelain!
3 incredibly gifted musicians and whatever that shirtless guy with the microphone is, the weak link is what he is. Being a world class musician doesn't make someone a world class songwriter as the majority of this album proves. Though that could be said for any of the RHCP albums. If we are talking singles this is 4 stars all day every day. As a whole album 2.7.
wonderful sonic variety between songs, rollercoaster feel, leaves you a bit tired, soft, and glowy, fun to place the 2 iconic songs i already knew from this album within the greater narrative of the album
Such an iconic album, a great listen that is filled with bangers. Just what I needed for today's workout. 8/10 [KEEP]
The album that made me really start listening to them with pleasure.
Album#1 ----------- 1) 3.5/5 2) 3/5 3) 3.5/5 4) 3.5/5 5) 3/5 6) 4/5 7) 3/5 8) 2.5/5 9) 2.5/5 10) 2/5 11) 3/5 12) 2.5/5 13) 3/5 14) 2/5 15) 3/5 ----------- This album was a letdown. I had high hopes, but Californication was the only track that really landed for me.
Great hits that are sullied by their rapey-ness. “I Like Dirt” wtf was that?
Man, it has been so many years since I've listened to this album. I used to really dig this when I was entering my rock phase in highschool, thanks to my father having the cd. Nowadays is incredibly rare that, to not say I don't, listen to them. Not that I dislike them, but I am not that crazy about their music anymore and the weird stuff some of the members did that has been surfacing the internet made me distance myself from them. Either way, this album is fun. It starts great with the track "Around the World", a very explosive start that gets super funky and also shows a nice point of silliness. However, the project gets serious with the next bunch of tracks. From "Parallel Universe" to "Porcelain", almost every track has a very mellow or sad tone, with the only exceptions being "Get On Top" and "Easily", which land in the cheerful and very funky side. These songs that are more melodic I also consider to be some of the strongest material, highlighting "Scar Tissue" with its beautiful guitars, "Otherside" being a very melancholic song and "Californication" having the most recognizable melodies of the whole album, and also a nice social criticism. The second half is way more funky and playful, but also the most forgettable. I think they still are incredibly decent and fun listens, specially the super silly "I Like Dirt" or the more melodic but with explosive chorus "This Velvet Glove", but overall, they feel a bit like filler. If the album had a lot less tracks, specially in this last side I mentioned, I would consider giving this a way higher score (even thought I think there is not a bad song in here).
Nogle fremragende numre imellem, men meget fyld trækker ned.
I hate doing this, but it's the rules. Plus one for the shout out to Wisconsin in Around the World.
was thinking about giving this 4 stars but had to skip "Get on Top" and "Californication" . and it was downhill from there for me….
Surprisingly good. Thought I hated this band, and although the hits got a bit samey. Some great production and fun to listen songs
I actually think some of the songs would be a lot better with some punk shouting over them rather than whatever Anthony Kiedis is doing. I feel like RHCP is a 3 band for me so this gets a 3. I don’t hate it but I will never love it.
momma always told me the rhcp were demonic. anyways, solid album!
Two things off the bat. First, we're used to it having heard it so much from this album and, separately, a TV show, but Californication is a goddamn stupid title. Second, the initial funk/thrash blast of "Around the World" gets me absolutely amped. It's sort of a drag that the song itself isn't that good and is an exemplar of some of Kiedis's worst faux-rap. BUT THEN, "Parallell Universe" IS the song you'd hope "Around the World" would be. Song rocks so, SO hard. Flea and Frusciante are both incredible musicians. When the band figures out how to deploy Kiedis (generally, singing, even though he's a bad singer), it really, really works. But when he gets all white-boy-rap, boobadopadeeCALFORN-YA it totally loses me. This album (along with the By the Way) was inescapable at the end of high school and into college. I still feel it, but it's incredibly inconsistent. Best tracks: "Parallel Universe" "Scar Tissue" "Otherside" "Porcelain" "Road Trippin'"
This was better than I remembered.
It has a ton of radio/MTV hits. I guess it’s a good enough album but truthfully I’m kind of tired of hearing these songs.
Has classics but surprised how uncohesive this is
I'm not an RHCP guy--I loved Under the Bridge when I was in elementary, but never really paid them much attention after that. Of course I encountered their music, but it never stuck. So, in my mind they were basically the parody that everyone thinks of when they think RHCPs. However, this is a pretty fun album! I don't think I'd ever just throw it on, but I have a greater appreciation of them as musicians.
Listened to this one in CD form on my Walkman. Thank goodness big JNCO-style jeans are back in, otherwise I wouldn't have pants with a pocket big enough for a portable CD player! This album has so much interesting guitar playing from Frusciante — a great example of how tone comes not just from pedals/amps/pick-ups but also how you "attack the instrument," as Les Claypool would say. I remember learning "Californication" on guitar as a kid and having my guitar teacher avoid explaining the name, which is just funny to me in hindsight. It's probably not just me, but I find it really hard to tell what the lyrics actually are on a lot of these tracks. I had to look up "Parallel Universe" to be able to hear Kiedis singing "Christ, I'm a sidewinder." Sometimes it sounds like he's really forcing the lyrics to fit the melody by putting emphasis on weird syllables. On top of this, I don't find the lyrics to be particularly poignant on any of the tracks on this album.
I would've rated this higher when I was younger, but it has grown a bit tiresome for me. Especially the lyrics/vocals. So much stupid innuendo. Actually the rest of the band is tight, so it's mostly just the vocals that I don't love. There are lots of iconic singles on this album that are definitely overplayed, such as Scar Tissue, Otherside, and of course Californication. They all seemed great to me when I first started listening to this album in high school to be fair. The rest of the tracks on the album never really grabbed me 10 years ago and they still don't. Giving this 3 stars because of nostalgia and catchiness of songs.
This is a nice, thoughtful collection of songs, with the usual Peppers edge and some snarl, but not the bite of their earlier albums.
จุใจจัด ๆ but not a fan of funk
For every sick jam, there is an equally ridiculous wreck of a song. Scar Tissue - I Like Dirt
It's alright but these were never my guys
The singles on this album were so wildly overplayed that despite them being fundamentally good, unique, and interesting songs I can't really deal with them anymore. They're just not fun to listen to and I can't focus away from Kiedis's voice, which is easily the worst part of the Chili Peppers. He takes far too much of a center stage on this album. I remember when this came out that everyone was pissing their pants about how good Frusciante is on guitar and how he radically changed the sound of the Chili Peppers. He is an excellent guitarist and he did change their sound, but I still think One Hot Minute is their best album and even though Dave Navarro is a weirdo, that era of this band was better. I know it's a hot take but I stand by it. There are some actually great tracks on here like Parllel Universe, and out of the singles I do still like Scar Tissue precisely because of the Frusciante guitar line, but the rest of this...eh. It's not as great as everyone thinks it is. Like so many other rock albums of the time I think it was so popular because there was just so much bad rock music being pumped out at the time and this is different. I don't hate it, but I dont' need all of this.
Some fantastic chili peppers material. What a start to a record. I love some of the funky stuff on this record. They really make their start into their poppy sound on this record too and the poppy singles and a couple of others are really great. It does have a distinctive sound and it feels thinner than their previous records. I don't love it at all but I don't think I hate it as much as others. Flea is too low in the mix in parts. It's a bit overlong for me. I think it could loose some of the poppier content in the middle of the second half and be a tighter record
Yeah it's cool
The album art here is stunning, some very basic color theory, coupled with some pretty stunning composition. I think it fits well with the timeless singles the album has to offer, but it's overkill for the overall production. Turns out this is not my favorite RHCP record, though it's a project that leans into the talent and I can definitely appreciate that. I also appreciate the execution at a conceptual level, really focusing on that Cali culture which serves as an introspective tool and a sweet focal point for the new listener. It's a record where they're really talking about themselves and why they sound like they do. The lyrics haven't aged very well, especially the style of them, we're definitely not Shakespeare here. A lot of times the songs are just on the verge of being boring or skippable. There's hits spaced out just right, it's impressive in that sense. I'd only put the record on again for those few tracks though, so not a lot of replay value, but I know this isn't the last time I'll hear this record. 3.4/5
Ughhh. Valjda na najbl zaseden dan. 18.22 končno začenjam. "Around the World" je sicer hud začetek za album. Sam fak, kok sm over Kiedis & all his shit, da koj k začne whatever the fuck on dela, me kr mal mine. Fak, ta stran albuma je prou single after single. In za vse mam nekak enako mnenje do zdaj. Muska mi je kul, itak me jebe tud nostalgija, besedila so velikrat fakin bedna, pa Kiedis me annoya. Evo, done. Skor eno uro kasneje.
yawn
I’d probably rate higher had this band not been shoved down our throats for so long.
Favorite track(s): Scar Tissue, Otherside, Get on Top, Californication Heard before Previous rating: 7/10
I love the Chilis. Flea , Frusciante and Smith rock and hard. And they funk and hard too. Kiedis is kind of the weak link for me, but they’ve kept him round for 40 years, so what do I know? The question is do they need more than one album on this list? 2.5 till I work it out.
I like chili peppers on a song by song basis, solid album but not my favorite by them!
Nice!
There are album bands and there are radio bands. RHCP is a radio band. Love hearing a Peppers song once every few hours during the day and they are almost always good. But sitting through a whole album is not where this band comes across the best. It’s grating and the white-boy hip hop is terrible.
first half was good and then i was just waiting for it to end
An overrated album
There's no denying the monster hits on this album, although the quality drops off considerably in a lacklustre second half. The more I listen and read, the more Kiedis feels like the weak link; Flea, Frusciante and Smith are excellent musicians.
Somewhere between a 3 and 4. Some decent tracks, but then some bogus tracks.
Started growing on me
This was okay. A little long and samey, not my favorite vocals, but generally unoffensive (other than the gibberish bits in the opening track, that pissed me off for some reason). I recognize and enjoyed a handful of the songs.
i have always liked many of these songs and yet i get kinda bored after the first few. none of the tracks are *bad* but they really don't do much to hold my attention. had they cut 4-5 songs from this album i probably would have rated it 4 stars
It’s a good album with some great songs. I’m only rating lower because I’m not a big fan of the style.
This album has a bunch of good songs but all together don't equal the sum of its parts.
I think this album is very much a case of less is more, especially with this deluxe version. For me, about 30% of the tracks are genuinely worth listening to, the rest are rather samey and uninspiring. I can see why The Greatest Hits album did much better as a collection of their better work simplified into one record.
Not my thing but not bad.
Pennsylvania mentioned??
All over the place, had multiple good songs, I likes scar tissue and others that sounded similarly
another one of those good ones that dont stay at that level for the whole album unfortunately
This band has not aged well for me. But they still have some great songs on this record. Terrible ones like I Like Dirt bring it down.
This album contains some of my favorite songs (scar tissue, otherside, californication), so I was excited. I liked the rest, it was easy listening but nothing else stood out to me and with the songs all reasonably short, this album dragged on way too long.
Some of this is really thoughtful and mature. Some of it feels like it was written by horny teenagers. Confusing
This type of music speaks to me, and i like it but ngl it's been too much of the same thing with this list and i'm kinda sick of it. Album sounded superb until the song after porcelain. Should have ended there imo.
One of those albums where despite not being a fan I somehow know most of these songs? I expect that'll be a common thread for many of these classics. MELLOW/VIBEY/CHILL/COOL/NINETIES
A couple bangers, mostly misses tho
Didn’t understand the hype around this album until over halfway through it. It starts with the hits that I think most people are more familiar with (Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication), solid catchy songs that play everywhere. Once you get past these, there’s a string of songs I would call misses (Easily through I Like Dirt) before picking back up with songs I hadn’t heard before but enjoyed much more, particularly This Velvet Glove and Purple Stain. Overall I think the album has too many misses or mid songs for me to call it great. The whole thing feels like a rubber band flinging back and forth between great instrumentals and interesting vocals to repetitive and boring. I can see how some would enjoy this album more, but I don’t think the Red Hot Chili Peppers are for me. 3/5 overall, some great songs but gets old fast for an 18 song album.
I used to listen to this album quite a bit, but eventually got tired of it. This is my first time listening to it start-to-finish in more than 25 years. ...And now I'm remembering why I got tired of this album: Anthony Kiedis. Otherwise, Flea, John, and Chad are really solid on this album. The other day, I was just thinking about the conflict over this album and Mr. Bungle's "California" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_(Mr._Bungle_album)#Red_Hot_Chili_Peppers_conflict ). I feel Mr. Bungle's album is the better one and has had more staying power for me.
genuinely, genuinely, no idea what the lead singer is saying at any point in this album. of course I had heard the red hot chili peppers before. It was about what I expected! Vibey and likely very good road trip music while driving contemplatively through hilly plains. I liked it but it wasn't anything life-changing. Maybe if I had listened to it in the early 00's? Alas, I was not alive for that. Otherside or the eponymous Californication were probably my favorite. Easily was also really good!
Historically I am not a Red Hot Chilli Peppers fan. They have a few great songs, but are largely not a band I enjoy all that much.
I don't really like Kiedis' singing voice. Really fun album though. I feel like everyone knows the singles from this one. Cannot understate how strong of a starter "Around the World" is as well
Album has some really good songs on it, super unique sound but not totally for me
Overt creative choices that demand respect. Aggressive sonics - guitar playing and vocal sounds strong. .
For a band so messy, this is a surprisingly clean and well constructed album. Around The World Scar Tissue Otherside Californication
That's funny, I just saw a Chili Peppers cover band last week, and I think they actually started with Around the World. Really fun intro really with a wacky chorus, but Parallel Universe switches up to a more post-punky vibe that continues on Otherside. Scar Tissue is easily their sound, but at its most refined for radio, which is a good thing. Not a big fan of Get On Top, it kinda screams filler to me from the especially lazy Keidis lyrics to the repetitiveness of the rest. Don't know why the cover band had to play this song too, though. They sounded better than this album though, and that's all thanks to Rick Rubin, who decided that every instrument should have clipping distortion when played loud enough, and none of these four do anything quietly besides for two songs, Porcelain and Road Trippin. I really like the contrast between the former to the rest of the album, such a beautiful level of control. Compare that to Easily, which to me, contains audio frequencies being shoved through cheese graters. The crash cymbals that open that song sound like some industrial machine, and then when Keidis starts singing the whole thing sounds like it's ran through a wah pedal left on near the top position. Just awful. It's hilarious that Metallica caught more hate from the decibel boosting than these guys when it ruins the Chili Peppers' music more. This Velvet Glove is my favorite song on the album, it's just a fun composition. My favorite song on this album is not on this album, Quixoticelixer I can honestly just leave this album behind in high school though, P!ATD is less embarrassing to listen to than this nowadays.
it's a classic rightfully so am i gonna come back? probably not but im happy i got to experience it "porcelain" new song on a loop
The sound of California, a sound I feel that I've outgrown as I've gotten older
It’s strange for its nonsensical lyrics this album felt like a coming of age album for the Chilli Peppers. Yes they’d had tracks like Under the Bridge long before tjis, but across a whole album it just felt more sustained. Obviously that view is undermined to some degree by the ding, donging of Around the World but if nothing else the instrumentation feels tighter, led by Flea’s bass. Parallel Universe feels like you’re in a speeding car hurtling toward the age of a cliff, which i’m not sure i enjoy as much as a 48 year old as i did when the album originally came out. Scar tissue is however still a great song. The guitar sound is just so chilled and chimes like a sweet bell. It shows that RHCP had the ability to deliver great songs when they slowed the high energy impulses down a tad. Otherside maintains this momentum and feeling of slight nostalgia of sunny days. Get on top is more traditional RHCP fare but you cant knock Frusciante’s guitarmanship. Californication is another ageless, beautiful track with its chilled instrumentation and more laid back Kleidas vocals building to “Dream of Californication”. After this there is a definite dip with songs like I Like Dirt and Purple Paint just unnecessary filler. Road Trippin makes for a good close, but overall not as good as I remember.
I discovered during this listen that 56 minutes of Anthony Kiedis's singing in one go, is too much Anthony Kiedis for me. His vocals are distinctive but pass over into annoying very easily. However there are some really good songs on this album. Scar Tissue is the highlight of the singles for me, but I also like Californication a lot. There are some pleasant enough album tracks too. Then there are some absolute stinkers. I mean, did the world need Get On Top or I like Dirt? I suspect RHCPs think they're sexy as hell during some of these songs, but they were in their mid to late 30s during this period and it's just cringey. Overall, I think this is just scraping a 3/5
While the album certainly didn't live up to my recollection of it from the first time I listened to it 10 years ago, it's still a pretty good album. The sound returns to this mix of funk and alternative that made them popular, boosted by the return of John Fusciante, who's guitar playing defined the band in the early days. They also dare to become spiritual, turning away just from lyrics of innuendo and jokes. Of course, there is only so far that goes, and listening to RHCP again it's fairly obvious that Anthony Kiedis is the weakest member of the band. This album has the same problem a lot of albums l. The first half is very good, and the second half is notably weaker. Now, I understand what they were going for in the second half, trying to be more spiritual and critical, but to me RHCP work best when they are full of energy, not really in their slower moments. The title track is an obvious exception to this, along with Saviour to a certain extent, but this doesn't change this from being an A-side album. But what an A-side it is, hit after him, more focused than the other albums of theirs that I've listened to. For the first 8 tracks alone the album us worth it, though the back half let's it down. Highlights include Parallel Universes (which may be my favourite song of theirs now), Scar Tissue, and Californication.
fun!
Some all time classic songs. Album overall is a bit bloated though. Plus Anthony Kiedis is a real gross dude and by far my least favorite part of this band. Could’ve been a 5 star otherwise.
It's weird how nostalgia can be a key factor in determining whether you enjoy an album or not. Within the first seconds of “Around the World,” I am immediately drawn back to one particular warm and lazy summer when I was in my early teens. All my friends were away on holiday; I spent my days lying in the grass or biking around the neighbourhood, beginning to dig deeper into music and hanging around in our smalltown record store. Time did not seem to pass at all; the days blended into each other, and for the last time in my life I felt free of responsibilities (or, to put it more drastically, I was bored in the most positive sense — a state of boredom that cannot be replicated when you're an adult and your mental load tends to be so overwhelming that you count the days until your next day off). Californication soundtracked a lot of these days. In short, this album gives me a feeling that's impossible to describe in just a few words (and, most importantly, a - positive - feeling that I will most likely never be able to revisit, even though it is a state of mind I thoroughly long to be in again). Reminds me of the good old madeleine that drew Proust into a swirl of memories thought to be lost to time. Is Californication a great album? Nah, I don't really think so; not at all. It has so many duds (mostly the lyrics and/or the boilerplate drumming + guitar playing), and its runtime should have been generously trimmed (oh, the ’90s / they could have cut more than half of the tracks on the second side), but still, Californication is an album where profound criticism would feel out of place for me. Because I like it for reasons other than the quality (or lack thereof) of its songs. Of course, Flea's bass playing and Kiedis's idiosyncratic vocal style mayke this fun to listen to listen to. I cannot recall listening to the record with the utmost attention back then (especially since my English, as a non-native speaker, was terrible at the time and I understood onyl a few words at best), so I was pretty surprised that even the most remote details felt familiar when I put it on today. Long-term memory… you fascinating phenomenon. It seems I know Californication's first half "better" than some of the records I actually call my favorite albums of all time. Haha.
as musicas calmas sao boas
Waffled between a 3 and 4. I've never really been a big RHCPs fan, but know and enjoy a lot of their singles. Going with a 3, since purportedly they have better albums and that'll give me some wiggle room if any of them show up on this list.
It's like how Sugar Ray hit it big with that one song, and then proceeded to change their entire sound on every subsequent album. I mean, it took RHCP a little longer to sell out because they still did a few interesting things up until this alterna-pop cash in (I contend that One Hot Minute is pretty decent in places.) But man, this all feels like variations of all their prior hits because clearly they were tired of being poor.
Didn’t care for the rap/rock. Guitar was good though.
I like every musician on this band except for the vocalist. First half of the album is fine, but gets repetitive quiet fast (Porcelain and further). Last song (Road Trippin') is fine, Around the World is fine, title song not so much. Generally, a very overplayed album. Still worth a listen, i guess.
Classic RHCP album, has massive hits and underrated songs on the album
The singles were fine, the rest was okay. Not the biggest rhcp fan.
It's ok
I should not read the reviews. Relax folks. This is supposed to be fun. I enjoyed the album. The musicianship is exemplary. Some of the tunes are spectacular. Some are meh.
I have listened them before, around my childhood/early puberty, so it brought me a lot of nostalgia from those times in which I used to listen this genre on the radio when my mom drove me to school. I still listen to the song "Californication" and a cover of "Under the Bridge" by an Irish girl who participated in The X Factor years ago.
did not hate this as much as I thought I would.
Inconsistent lyrically but Californication and Otherside both really good
6/10 Too long, too thumpy. Stand out tracks stand out
one of the most imbalanced albums I've heard. A little over half is complete dogshit, but then songs like Scar Tissue and Savior are sweet. Some seriously annoying songs on here.
What can I say, a lot of people like this album; for me its not my favorite of theirs and I never could get into RHCP like others could. At the point this album came out, it kind left a bad taste in my mouth with the overplay they were getting, for songs that weren't and still aren't that great. You can say what you want about musicianship, but it all just feels like it exists to me. I'll be happy if I never hear another song about California thanks to these guys. Biggest Hit - Scar Tissue Biggest Miss - Emit Remmus Bonus Hit - Parallel Universe
I used to love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but long ago stopped listening because everything started to sound the same. I have to admit.I enjoyed some of these songs more than I expected to. Still good musicians, just too repetitive for me anymore.
Not my type
When this came out, I thought it was a bit middle of the road and not up to Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Listening just over 25 years on, I still agree with the first part, but not the second. Lyrically, there are still some awful moments. Around the World and Get on Top are particularly bad, but Otherside and Scar Tissue are genuinely good, if safe songs. Overall, as an adult, I much prefer this to Blood Sugar Sex Magik, although I still don't think it's a great album.
this album was kind of mid for me honestly. maybe im just not really a big fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I did enjoy Californication more than I enjoyed Blood Sugar Sex Magik though?
It's a classic, but I prefer the Red Hot Party Peppers than the Orange Meditative Repetitive Peppers. And when all your hits are on one side you probably don't need to pad it out to 15 songs, just make them count.
Even though it's overcompressed human slop I really can't stop listening. I should not be enjoying this album as much as I do. Blood Sugar Sex Magic is a much better album, but this record has some bangers.
