Meh
____zzz___
I admire but don't necessarily love her free association weirdly spaced phrasing and singing style. Blue was a very good listen, Hejira was decent, this is pretty meh to me, sorry to the Joni Mitchell blowhards. Ok that last track was a nice little jazzy bop though.
It was nice, very chill. Her singing was a bit much for me though

General Thoughts: * Her lyrics are *dense* in multiple ways: She sings through them quickly, but they're also laced with meaning deep enough that I can't parse them as fast as she's singing them. * Her voice eventually grated on me almost as much as Curtis Mayfield's falsetto. Since the lyrtics are so dense and so fast, I could barely parse any meaning from them, so her voice was basically "just another instrument" at that point. * There are so many songs that I lost track that follow the same pattern - Immensely interesting instrumentals on their own, that *completely disappear* when she starts singing and turn into some of the most generic folk-pop in the world. It's like every song is two songs: The part where she's singing, and the part where she isn't. And I like the parts where she isn't a LOT more. Final thoughts: If I had the inclination to sit and pause and rewind and analyze each song to really pick them apart I would end up liking them more, but on a very first listen? It really didn't do much to inspire me to listen again. In the end, so much of it blended together that it felt "Samey". And if you like that samey, then this is GREAT. But I didn't. Would I listen to Again: No Overall Score: 4/10 - 2 stars What goes on the playlist: Free Man In Paris, Raised on Robbery, Twisted.
meh, another songwritting album that I can't really get into. I thought maybe the jazziness that GPT mentioned this album would have would be enough to get this to a 3 but nope.
I acknowledge the talent here but this music isn’t for me. I’ve always hated this stream of consciousness type of songwriting.
Couldn't really vibe to this one. 2/5 Top track: Help Me, Car on a Hill
Slitsomt
Beh
A bit more variety than I expected from Joni Mitchell
Lighter with a jazzy touch.
Didn't really click for me tbh!
I feel like I’m being a real grump here so going to focus on the positives. Mitchell’s voice really is beautiful and I enjoyed having the record playing in the background whilst I worked. However, as much as I appreciate that this is a good record… it just isn’t for me. It just merged too much into the background and there was nothing to make it stand out to me. Apart from that god awful last track which stood out for all the wrong reasons!
Pleasant but ultimately not for me.
I came in with decently high expectation but was honestly mostly bored. This felt like the final boss of coffee shop music. I liked "Raised on Robbery" mostly because it actually had some energy. 4/10
Es bastante romántico tranquilo, pero no me atrapó
This album felt pretty much the same as Blue to me. While listening I was mostly bored and disconnected again. It’s a bit more polished and has some jazz influences, but it still feels like a bunch of vague, airy words and wandering melodies that never really land or give me anything solid to hold onto. I honestly can’t get the whole Joni Mitchell phenomenon. People treat her like she’s untouchable, but her music just doesn’t click with me at all. It feels pretentious and empty, like it’s trying to be deep without actually saying much. Nice voice and decent production, sure, but overall it left me cold again. Another miss.
Wasn’t really feeling it
More mid-70s Joni Mitchell, with "extreme storytelling" in the lyrics. This one was more forgettable than others, which I also have trouble remembering.
Yeh, meh ye it’s aight. Had some good jams here and there but overall it was quite boring. You might find yourself appreciating what she’s doing without feeling particularly moved by it. 2/5
good for her!
Another boring Joni Mitchell album but slightly better than Hejira. Raised by Robbery actually gave me some hope that she has good songs. No more though apart from Blue
Nice enough, but not a repeat listen
Listened to on my Apple AirPods Max. This is a confounding album, to me at least. I've listened to it twice for this album generator project, the first being a more background kinda listen while doing yard work, and then a more focused listen later in the day. And honestly, I still can't quite make heads or tails of this. There is a truly undeniable talent laden throughout, whether it be Joni Mitchell's angelic voice, her poetic storytelling, or the composition of this thing, with complex passages that squeeze into any little cracks left open. Even with all this considered however, I feel actual brain confusion when I listen to this album. It's like all these elements should come together for a delightful listen, but I'm mostly feeling totally disjointed and disconnected from this thing. This is found in the stories that spin out uncohesively at times, Joni's delivery in where she modulates her voice and tone at random or ties strings of lines together without an expected rhythmic guide, interjects vocal overlays with a reckless abandon, and the band itself given free reign to just futz about doing whatever, as long as they revisit the melody a handful of times throughout. Something that I have found to be quite important to my listening experience doing this project is being able to connect with the album, whether that be with the intention, the lyricism, the instrumentation, what have you. If I find an album overly-produced, written unconvincingly, or is composed in an uninteresting way, I have a hard time getting connected and wanting to stay engaged and listening. What makes this album so bizarre to me is that it doesn't necessarily have those problems yet I cannot connect regardless. I like a lot of jazzy ideas throughout, and there are some tracks that I like alright enough, like the title track for it's atmosphere and storytelling, 'Raised on Robbery' for it's astounding ability to create a homely, folksy, upbeat country song that doesn't quite fall into kitsch, or the ender track 'Twisted', a smooth, jazzy cover of an oldie track with some silly, fun lyricism. But even in these tracks I like, I don't love them. I just don't really dig a lot of this album. The structure continually frustrates me, and it almost makes me want to call it pretentious, but I really doesn't feel it. All of it's constant switch-ups and left turns derive from a place of actual enticement and expression, but it feels like it's ready to blow apart at any moment, bursting with too many creative ideas that don't flow into each other smoothly, and too often fleeting, never getting the chance to truly ground itself within each song. It's certainly a very interesting listen, and it's one that makes me think, but in terms of actual enjoyment I just don't get too much out of it.
Easy listen but nothing memorable
I guess this fine. I can see what people are drawn to it but it didn't really do much for me.
This is one of those things that I can see the quality in but recognise is not for me. Raised on Robbery is a highlight. I see the vision but it isn't for me, so I don't have too much to say.
A perfectly pleasant album, just not really my thing. The album sounds how the cheesecake factory looks. It's at least a merciful 40 minutes. Perhaps the point of folk post '71 was to show you that simon and garfunkel were really something else. Raised on Robbery adds some much needed liveliness but it's too little too late. Didn't like Trouble Child. Twisted was pretty cute.
That last song cost the album another star...
Her voice is good and it was pleasant enough, but her songs don’t have melodies
I should love Joni. I love Brandi Carlisle and I love how she’s re-invigorated Joni’s career and story. But I just don’t love this album- even though I understand her voice is amazing.
Ниочемно, отсутствие рифм режет уши, только инструментал пойдет
idk, it was all right? nothing jumped out as a banger, but the whole thing was inoffensive (except maybe the last track Twisted, which was a bit much)
It is just boring. I literally forgot it was even playing.
Had some really interesting naturisticifical moments. But also lots of eh. Still neither of my two favorite songs of hers.
Nice to have on in the background but not really my taste
My first proper listen to a Joni album. Some great songwriting but not sure it’s for me. If this landed today, not sure it or Joni would have been such a big deal. 2.4/5.
I think my Joni Mitchell limit was reached an album ago. Doesn't seem as immediate as Blue and i can't be bothered to put the time in for this one
If Joni Mitchell were a packet of crisps, she’d be ready salted flavour. I have been kind to her so far in this listening journey, maybe even guilty of trying to like her, but how much Joni Mitchell is too much Joni Mitchell? This much Joni Mitchell. My biggest gripe here is that the songs go nowhere and vocal gymnastics too often mask a lack of melodic choruses. A fine voice? Sure. Ok, the production is broadly excellent too, but do I want to listen to any more Joni Mitchell doing what Joni Mitchell does? No. It’s a wandering poem of an album steeped in self indulgence and I cannot think of a reason why i would choose to play this again.
I was never a Joni Mitchell fan and spending 37 minutes listening to this album only reinforced my thinking. I know she is loved by many but I just can’t get there
Not for me. Folk garbage from the 70s
Every once in awhile there was a small spark, but pretty boring overall.
No standouts
Once again, I: Recognize the talent Respect the talent Think the music is beautiful Have nothing against the artist or album But I just can't get into this artist or her album.
didn't really pique my interest at any point unfortunately
Not my fave. Was hoping to recognize some songs. Liked Raised on Robbery the best bc it was most fun and upbeat.
Too 70s folk by half. I never really connected with her voice, it sounds... searching to me. Like an artificial range insertion and a little overly dramatic. Moments of greatness and no denying the talent but just doesn't blow my hair back.
Not bad, though I prefer her other album more. Still, high 2s.
70’s Folk ⭐️Free Man in Paris
I was bored
I just can't with the voice
Pleasant on the ear, but painfully forgettable.
copado, no mucho más.
I tried, but really not my thing.
Very independent hippy vibes. LOVE Raised on Robbery, feel like it belongs in the Baby Driver movie. Definitely prefer the upbeat tempo of this song compared to the rest of the album so far. I like the jazz cover but only because it’s different than the rest of the album.

I thought i was going to like this album because the first song kind of gave Tori Amos vibes for me, but IDK, it just wasn't one I enjoyed much really.
I don't hate Joni but this ain't my bag.
Too many Joni
Ugh, after loving "Blue", I really expected to at least really like this one. Instead, it's headache-inducing mushy goop - "Help Me" in particular is nails on blackboard. The second star is for Blue again.
Not the biggest fan. Sounded a bit too whiny for my tastes
redelijk
Folks up beat
Not bad, but also tending toward unremarkable. 2.5 stars.
lol, no thanks. The last Joni Mitchell record I got stuck with was enough for me. I did skim through a few of these tracks just to make certain what I already believed: Joni’s voice is pretty much my own definition of unlistenable, the music bores me to tears, and the songs kind of go nowhere for me. 3.5/10
I appreciate Blue as much as I can, but I just don’t get Joni
Silpnokas
Meh
This belongs in the hall of fame......The MEH hall of fame. Bored me to pieces. 2
not my kind of music
It's slightly better than Blue. I dunno, I don't think I'll ever come around on Joni Mitchell at this point. Probably a me problem but there's really only so many hours in the day and so much I can stand. Fav tracks: Help Me
Didn’t enjoy the flow of the songwriting. Liked the saxophone.
This one was just okay. I found some of it a little interesting but I don't have many thoughts on it. Probably wouldn't listen to it again.
I recognize that there's some amazing musicianship and the songwriting and style is unique. I'm not a Joni Mitchell guy.

great voice... boring album
not my personal favorite
too jazzy 4 me
Ne
Якось нудно, проте звучить доволі автентично
Ne volim ove antitalentovane muzičare koji su na tekstove koji su navodno dobri prošli hiljadu puta na ovu listu. Evo nju slušam treći put. I opet ništa. Mada moram priznati da mi je ovaj album malo bolji od prethodna dva.
I know that Joni Mitchell is very talented and very few people have ever been able to do what she does. The piano and vocals are objectively very well executed and performed beautifully. All of the elements are there to make this an incredible album. I personally just don't like it. There is a particular thing that Joni does where she changes pitch as she sings a line that I just don't enjoy. Its a me thing and I understand that. But I have listened to an album that I would not otherwise have listened to. And I didn't hate it. I just don't love it. (1.750)
Nice song writing and vocals but it’s all just a bit radio 2 isn’t it
Not really a fan. She is talented but the music is very boring and plain. Not for me.
her voice bores me :/
110/1001 First listen. This did nothing for me. There’s definitely worse music so I can’t give it one star. The best of ‘74? C’mon! 3/10
Only okay. I don't really like her singing style. Last song didn't feel like an end of album song.
I wish this album was better. This is my first time listening to any of it. It was calm and had some fun jazz elements but it was not what I am looking for. Giving it 2/5
Not bad, but also my least favorite genre so....
Not my cup of tea
Not for me.
Ok
More evidence that folk music just isn't my thing, as a lot of this went in one ear and out the other. I didn't really find much interesting about Joni's lyrics or her stabs at other musical genres, all of which felt more stretched toward bending said genres to Joni's limited vocal range and delivery. Given that she's a very popular, influential and widely-covered artist, I'm content to chalk this up to a me thing.
Couldn’t really get into this album as a whole. I liked parts of a few songs but can’t see myself coming back to any songs in particular. Top song is help me.
These early 1970s singer-songwriters are really to my taste. This was a nice album but, to my ears at least, not a great one. I don't really care for Mitchell's voice.
I don’t love her voice to much, i find it a bit high pitched sometimes
• Historically, I am not a fan of Joni Mitchell, so I'm not really looking forward to this listen. I'm going to try have an open mind, since I don't think I know any songs from this album yet. • The vocal harmony right at the start each verse of Help Me sounds really nice • Free Man in Paris encapsulates a lot of my feelings on Joni Mitchell in a nutshell; really nice instrumentals, fine vocal melodies (though even then I find some of her deliveries a bit grating) and lyrics I just can't get behind. A lot of her lyrics feel like they were written without any regard for how they would sound when sung. • The outro to People's Parties, specifically the backing vocals, sounds so bad • Down to You's lyrics are a prime example of what I was talking about • I quite like how Just Like This Train sounds, mainly in the verses I don't feel like my opinion on Joni Mitchell as a whole has changed after listening to this album, but I do think this album is a better than her other material that I've heard. While I didn't find any of the songs amazing, I do feel like the good songs stood out more than the bad. I wouldn't even say this was my least favoutite album yet, as I enjoyed listening to this a lot more than I did the Velvet Underground album. Favourite song: Help Me
Nothing really memorable here.
A few songs pop off but it almost feels like there’s too many filler song. A bit boring.
I didn’t really like this, but if it was playing in the background I don’t know if I would hate it. I’ll never come back to this tho
Slow
Guitar playing was nice but her message goes right over my head. This is definitely not for me. 2/5
Not for me
Nagyon meglepődtem, hogy ennyire fog tetszeni, pedig őszintén, annyira nem volt kedvem adni neki egy esélyt. Azóta is ezt hallgatom és most egy ideig ez lesz a gymes albumom.
Really dislike Joni Mitchell.
The actual music of the album was good, but the vocals were just not there for me...
I tried. I really did. I listened to six whole songs all the way through. I even recognized one of them! And Ms. Mitchell clearly has a lovely singing voice and probably a bottomless well of talent for the well-cultueed to appreciate. For me? No. I couldn't finish the album. The songs blended together in one dreary miasma of pop preciousness that made me tired and pissy. Blech. 2.
There aren't songwriters like this today. It's not something I enjoyed enough to give any song a second listen. 2/5
Unique and very '70. Not my music.
Kan fint høra på da, men gir meg ikkje all verdens
Not my thing Can't get on with Joni Mitchell I think it's her voice I can appreciate the songs and how complex and just good they are but I don't like it Enjoyed Raised on Robbery Help me All the rest I was bored and just wanted to listen to something else Not my cup of tea
There’s nothing concretely ‘bad’ about this album, but my god it’s a snooze-fest. I really don’t understand the hype around it - the songs don’t leave much of an impression, there’s limited variety & a real lack of energy. It’s not an unpleasant listen by any stretch but it’s also not inspiring whatsoever. Soft 4/10 for this one.
oubliable dsl en plus j'ai pas écouté parce que j'étais entrain de réviser #j'aiflop de plus j'aime pas trop Joni Mitchell mais bon maybe ill give her another chance (I won't)
*1974. *Why more Joni Mitchell?!? *She's really not growing on me. There are some good bits, but I just can't get into her music. RATING - 6/10
Jag är ledsen men jag blev uttråkad. Finns annat jag föredrar att lyssna på som tillfredsställer.
enjoyable once but not my energy
this album was fine and it was nice to listen to but none of the tracks except for Help Me really did it for me. i love the jazzy influence on joni’s music but most of the songs weren’t particularly interesting to me.
Didn’t like it too much
I’m not the target audience for this album. Some of it’s nice, but broadly this is what Carole King would be had someone shown her the gospel of instruments-other-than-piano.
me recuerda mucho a esta mujer que hizo la cancion de hey who really cares y a carole king, es coml una mezcla de las 2 pero 85% carole king y 15% linda perhaps creo q me acabo de acordar del nombre. En la canción de Just Like This Train dice "watching your headline receed" y me ha hecho gracia, rafa referencia? Canciones muy tranquilas y muy bonitas, podrían tener más chichilla la verda, no está mal
Better than I thought it would be. 1 or 2 catchy tunes.
Bob Dylan as a woman and no harmonica
Wow this is boring. These aren’t songs, these are rambling stories somebody who has the most boring life keeps rambling on about. Sigh. 2
Never a big Joni Mitchell fan
Couple of decent songs, rest was alright but not for me I think
Melekosen tylsää musaa. Vähän semmosta mikä soi jossain Terminator kekkosen avausbaarikohtauksessa, ettei vie huomiota itse Arskalta. Pannaan 2 tähteä tälle paskalle, ei kuitenkaan pilannut päivää.
vähän ehkä pliisua
I gave Blue 1 star, and I think this one is better than that so I'll give it 2 stars. Totally subjective but I just don't like her voice or style.
This album was just boring and bland outside of Help Me I couldn’t tell you any other stand out track
All a bit waily for me.
Meh
Didn't feel much from this one beyond the first few tracks.
This is the kind of album that plays on the overhead speakers while you get a root canal. 🦷
If this is Joni Mitchell's best, then Joni Mitchell is not for me
Not my favorite artist but respect her music I suppose
Got bored with this album.
Ziemlich langweilig 2/5
Eh
I know that Joni Mitchell is one of those artists that I'm supposed to respect. This music was very hard to listen to. The songs tell long stories but don't have the time to tell them so the lyrics are very mashed together and come out like exposition. Oh, and the stories are not interesting. Not my favorite.
sorry paul this isnt for me
11 songs - 36 minutes Folksy and can’t really understand what she is singing about, sweet voice and great control but fluctuations don’t match music, not real structure to songs more storytelling Love - Raised on a robbery so funnnn country CHIC Trouble Child and Twisted - 😔🤮
Nothing offensive about it but it wasn't for me.
Usually a big Joni Mitchell fan and I still do love her voice but this album is not for me.
Some pleasant tracks - just not my cup of tea
Ikke spesielt spennende for min del, glir glatt inn i bakgrunnen. Likte det bedre enn det andre Joni Michell-albumet som har kommet.
I liked this more than her other one but I still don't really like her music :(
I like her. I don’t like this album.
Calm album
Folk. No. However it's a great background music.
Et helt album ble litt vel mye. Help Me var kul da, men ellers ikke treff for meg.
A Joni Mitchell album I’ve never heard before. I didn’t recognize a single song! Maybe it wasn’t the right day for me to come to this? Maybe I’m too old to appreciate unheard Joni songs? Maybe the pale yellow on the cover was off putting to me? Whatever the case, this didn’t thrill me. It washed over me and then was gone. I’m shocked to read this is her best selling album! Maybe people expected more because of her other outings? I’m confused on this one.
Meh, it's ok, not really my thing.
Just not for me. I'm generally a fan of acoustic heavy 70s music, but this one missed the boat for me. Part of it I think is the mix. The drums in Help Me sound..off. I also don't like her singing voice in Twisted, though I did like the rhythm of the song.
Not my thing. Too many wild changes in pitch on every song
Not for me
Relax listen but not something I would seek out for.
Excellent. Not my favorite style, but still a pleasure to listen to on occasion.
this was alright, a couple of good tracks but probably wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this again which is disappointing cos i wanted to like this
I do not get the fascination with Joni Mitchell. Not very moving to me. Voice is pretty but just can't get into it.
Not for me
What I hear when I listen to this album is what must have been an affable and charismatic young woman’s access to tremendous artistic resources. Beautiful production, tight band, sweet harmonies, and Robben Ford’s guitar work is wonderful - all to prop up painfully vapid lyrics, indulgent interludes, and a lead vocalist with no range. Joni Mitchell reminds me of that rich kid who wanted to be an artist and lined everything up just right… except the authenticity.
Too much whining
Can't get on board with this. Too unsettled, too much going on. I'm sure all these twists and turns are very clever in lots of ways I'm too dumb to understand, but I'm not enjoying the ride.
Boring easy listening piano music, with some folky and jazzy elements. Not bad but really didn't feel memorable in any way. About as bland as you can possibly get for 'good music'.
Just didn't work for me
Nett, aber packt mich nicht.
The album and writing lacks structure, which seems to be intentional. Not bad by any means if you think of it as poetry / spoken word and temper expectations. Top Tracks: Trouble Child, Raised on Robbery
Good lyrics but fuck it was hard to get through most of the album. The last few songs are a bit better, but not by much. Fave song: Raised on Robbery
Did she improv all her lyrics or smth? The cohesion between the lyrics and instrumentals are terrible. Favourite Song: Car On The Hill
I just don't like Joni Mitchell. It sounds like random warbling to me.
Smooth stuff
Classical Joni Mitchell - all about the stories. Too much work for me, but I get why so many people like it.
Feels like Coffee Shop music. Not my bag
I'm sorry to Joni Mitchell but this is now the third album I've listened to for 1001 and I just really, really dislike her voice and vocal style. It's hard to put together a critique beyond that, but not one I would reach for again.
i can tell that this is expertly made music, it just isn't particularly for me
Kinda weird folk jazz thing. I didn’t get it
Leicht und Munter aber nicht wirklich mein Fall. Aber gute Entspannungsmusik
I don't usually connect with many female vocalists — for me, it takes something truly exceptional to make an impression. Unfortunately, this album didn’t do it. I found it kind of whiney. "Raised on Robbery" saved me from only giving this album one star.
It was okay.
Uneven singing, particularly "Twisted" (was that on purpose?) Average music (elevator music) 5/10
4/10 - nice easy going music, not offensive or exceptional either
Things I've discovered while doing this project. I like Bob Dylan a lot more than I thought I would. I dislike Joni Mitchell a lot more than I thought I would. Favorites: None Would I listen to it again: No
1. Court and Spark - 5 Lyrically solid, instrumentally good. Overall a solid opening track to the album. Not anything fantastic but not anything poor either. Just a decent track. 2. Help Me - 7 Great sound. Vocals and guitar are absolutely exquisite on this track. Beat takes a little to get used to but overall it's a good track. 3. Free Man In Paris - 6 Another nice and lovely sound of vocals and guitar. Just like the track before it. 4. People's Parties - 2 Vocally this sounds great but the speed and tempo crash into each other. For example some lines lyrically are in line with the music and other others are sped up and sung really quickly so as to fit the sentence in before the guitar is one it's chords. The longer held notes at the end do not sound good either. Leaves the track feeling too rushed. 5. The Same Situation - 4 Solid but overall average song about searching for love. Nothing remarkable. 6. Car On A Hill - 7 Jazzy track unless the previous 5 on the album. The sax sounds great, as does the piano. Lyrically it's the strongest track on the album so far. Just an overall great track. 7. Down To You - 4 Another song that lyrically feels very rushed. The tempo of the lyrics make the song feel miles all over the place. Background singers feel out of place with how the opening two minutes are as do some of the instruments. Just not a great track. 8. Just Like This Train - 4 Instrumentally it's a bit odd. The pitch is gets too high on a lot of the ending rifts to the lines, at least too high for my liking. Vocals are less of the all over the place style of the previous tracks I've struggled to get through but still threaten at times to return to that random pattern. Overall just an incredibly odd song. 9. Raised on Robbery - 9 Brilliant track. Much more jazzy than anything else on the album but brilliant. Lyrically strong, musically a joy, overall just a solid track with a lot of love about it. 10. Trouble Child - 4 Again the pace is all over the place and the track becomes extremely hard to enjoy because of it. The lines of the verses just crash into each other because of this. It just feels like it could have been better written. 11. Twisted - 2 Like one of those bad solo singers in an underground coffee shop. Again the pace loses itself at times and it happens during the time when Joni's pitch reaches it's highest, which only drowns the actual words out into sound. Lyrically it's very weak on top of that. Forgettable track. Average Rating: 4.90 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.45 Rounded Down: 2 Stars
The best was background music, most of it was just boring, and the worst was at least slightly annoying. This just isn't my type of music.
Sort of boring
Not bad but lacked energy
Pleasant but kinda boring. Not my genre
I’m so distracted by the lack of melodies and weak singing that it’s hard to find the great songwriting everyone is here for
It's... fine. Nothing bad, but just nothing that I'm excited about. 2/5 for personal taste reasons.
no es para mí, no pude escuchar todos los temas con letra al lado pero en los que si se nota que es una poeta, pero son embargo no me atrapa, me gustó el último tema que era muy jazzero
court and spark- 3 help me- 3 free man in paris- 3 peoples parties- 3 the same situation- 3 car on a hill- 3 down to you- 3 no more joni, im tired
Not my thing, at all.
1.5 Winston is right.
It was ok, but not my thing
meh...
Joni Mitchell's magnum opus. Tough rate. As far as influence, Mitchell deserves a place on this list, and this is obviously considered her greatest album. But it doesn't contain her greatest hits (like, none of them), and while she was very influential and paved the way for some really great singer-songwriter women, this is just a super blah album. If it wasn't Joni Mitchell, it'd be a 1. But even her name can't get it to a 3.
Another day, another Joni Mitchell album that isn't anywhere near as good as Blue. Can't really remember the other non-Blue Joni album's we've had so I imagine they were similarly forgettable. She has a great voice that barely gets used here and the songs are generally straightforward. Went by acceptably enough but not worth a listen.
Not a fan. It’s exactly like someone telling a story and singing all the words but not in a good way. It was boring and annoying.
The best Joni Mitchell album I've experienced in this exercise so far by a country mile. Blue, Hejira, and The Hissing of Summer Lawns were all deadly dull to me. The elements that made them dull were felt in the middle of the album. But the bookends actually did include some movement that gained my attention, finally. Finally I will not have an involuntary recoil to seeing her pop up in any playlists
Simply put Joni doesn't speak to me the way she does to her numerous fans.
Sorry not a Joni fan but I can see how others love her,
What could be more seventies than Cheech and Chong guesting on a Joni Mitchell modal jazz vibe album. Pass the quaaludes, man. Fun in its way, but it doesn’t land for me. There are moments - Joni’s voice is a powerful instrument, and she’s a sharp, incisive lyricist. But the songs don’t take on a life of their own. They feel muddled, structureless. These sorts of modal moods can work if there’s lots of interesting stuff happening in the space opened up (sixties jazz; The Dead) but there’s not enough of that here. It’s at once too languid and flimsy while also busy and overfull. Down to two from three because as great as her voice is it often grates on me. Joni may be an acquired taste, and she’s adjacent to lots that I love, so I’ll keep at it.
I can appreciate why people appreciate Joni Mitchell's work, but it just isn't for me.
Joni Mitchell has a great distinctive voice and that shows on this album. However overall i was left underwhelmed by the album and slightly bored. For an album lasting only 37 minutes it really seemed to drag at points. The change in tempo for ‘Raised on robbery’ was a welcome relief from what went before but was not enough to lift this album for me overall.
My Joni Mitchell knowledge was limited as I lined this up for a listen, but I was fairly sure it wasn’t going to be for me - and I was right. I can see her appeal, and why she is lauded, but she just doesn’t do it for me. She nearly got a bonus star for her excellent grasp of a song-coming-in-under-three-minutes, but I resisted.
Special mood only, not really into this
Folk
Nice, but doesn't really do anything for me
It’s easily the most swayed I’ve been by a Joni Mitchell album … but that’s not saying much, unfortunately. There’s a sort of guilt, maybe shame that attaches itself to my inability to enjoy the obviously brilliant songs of Joni Mitchell. It’s nothing personal; I find much of that slice of seventies West coast boho counter cultural ra-ra to be disingenuous and, to use the parlance of today, icky. It’s an unpopular opinion – perhaps even an actually wrong one, they do happen – but I’ve never heard a Joni Mitchell song I wanted to listen to again. And so while I don’t find this record offensive, neither do I find it even the remotest bit charming, beguiling, intriguing or, ultimately, enjoyable.
Not for me
Pleasant enough. Raised On Robbery brings a welcome gear change and is the highlight of the album for me.
Successful, perhaps, but not a very good album.
Inicialmente el album me aburrió, Down to you y Just like this train llamaron mi atención. Luego, fue la perfecta banda sonora para una gran siesta que mi amiga y yo, inesperadamente, tomamos.
Meh, shes cool but it's like poetry set to music
Words
The fist time I listened to her in my 20s it sounded fresh, but man it gets repetitive and annoying. Not even sure why.
I get why people like it but its not for me.
Started off promising with Court And Spark and Help Me, but then it started to dip. The songs don't seem to have any structure, she's just playing music and singing whatever comes to her mind. Raised On Robbery was a lot of fun though. Best song: Raised On Robbery
Dig some of some instrumentation but Joni’s voice just grated on us after a couple of tracks.
2 Stars (5/15)
Not my jam. Unoffensive but not something I would put on purposely.
Didn't really resonate with me
A nice listen but not a single track that hooks me. Furthermore I'm not 100% fine with her voice. 2,5
2.45 star. I liked some of the songs but not her voice overall. Sorry women.
Bien mais pas marquant du tout. J ai déjà oublié la plus part des titres.
Not my favorite Joni Mitchell. Liked that jazzy song at the end though.
Nice easy listening album. I enjoyed it.
This was an odd one. Joni Mitchell is certainly a cool character, and there is an ease to the way she records music, but elements of this album felt like they had a “forced” attempt at coolness, maybe an unintended consequence of taking on some jazz influences. It seemed insincere and monotonal, which is a shame given how much I rated Blue.
Realized I’m not a huge fan of Joni Mitchell
Sorry Joni this did not power my run
I know some folks absolutely love Joni Mitchell. Based on this album I’m not one of those folks, but that’s okay. I mainly wasn’t into her voice/vocal style, I’m not sure why, too breathy maybe?
I don't know about this. I haven't really ever sought out Joni Mitchell music and I probably won't after listening to this album. It was fine, not really to my taste -- I think I may have liked her take on a jazz song at the end the most?
This is the second Joni Mitchell album on this journey and I can confirm I’m not a fan. Her lyrics are inventive and well written but I just don’t like her voice. I didn’t hate the album but I also wouldn’t go seek this out and listen again. Some of the music is almost easy listening. At least the music picks up on the second half. It was fun to hear Cheech and Chong on “Twisted”. That was a surprise. I would like a more acoustic album for the next Joni Mitchell album. I’m sure another will appear on this journey at some point. Favorite songs on this album are “Raised on Robbery” “Twisted” and “Trouble Child”
Sorry, I just don't like Joni Mitchell. Nothing wrong with her music, it's just not my style.
This was between a 2-3 for me. There are some good folk rhythms in the first half of the album that are soft and enjoyable but then it moves to some scatty, jumpy songs towards the end that are not as smooth and too jazzy for me. People's Parties is the best. Landing on a 2 as this is not one of the best albums of all time.
Not my thing. I can respect her though for sure.
Honestly better than I was fearing. Still she's going for things she really shouldn't be.
I did not enjoy this. Too slow and vibes.
I don't necessarily think this album is bad, it's just excruciatingly boring. There's a couple ok songs towards the end.
truly one of the most boring albums I've ever listened to
Zu seicht :D
Meh, I'm just not a Joni Mitchell fan. Her voice at times can be grating and the instrumental composition for most of her songs just doesn't do it for me. Lyrically she's great though. 2.5/5
Another artist I never connected with, I can't understand her popularity. Average singer at best. Must be a poet, the wordy songs were lost on a savage like me. I had never listened to this album previously, but it sounds old and disjointed. It has a pretty good listen count, especially for "Help Me" & "Free Man In Paris", if that's the cream of the crop it's a lost cause for me to continue. Definitely not a T1001 album.
Нудна музика, з монотонним текстом
I know she’s revered as a natural treasure. Doesn’t matter. I’ve never enjoyed more than maybe one or two of her songs. This is the second album of hers I’ve had on this list. I hated the first and don’t like this one. Snoozy and borderline pretentious. I said what I said!
I can understand how people like this, but it's not for me 2/5
It's the voice and that hotel lounge music that is not for me. The music is like a weird mix of Pop and country, it's just so bland. Hold music. Lyrics *Checking on my sex appeal* what????? Polymath Ps The Television album contains one of the greatest lyrics "And the Cadillac left the graveyard"
It's strange that a more popular album wasn't recommended. I'm totally okay with country music, but Mitchell's songs don't ring my bells.
I had a hard time with Joni Michell’s Court and Spark. The music sounded dated. Very seventies, but not in a good or even nostalgic way. I like a lot of music from this decade but I could not get into this album. Joni’s vocals over some of the music just didn’t fit. It was like trying force a square peg into a round hole. And I had an issue with her vocal style and pattern on many of the songs. One of the descriptions I read for this album said Joni was in between her folkie past and jazz rock future. I think that is fitting. Court and Spark feels indecisive and bumpy like being on a flight with tons of turbulence. You’re never comfortable and you want it to end. There were only a few moments that I found intriguing, but at least those few times convinced me to bump this to a 2. 2/5
I can’t find any reason to consider this music bad. I just don’t like this music to my taste. Its reminiscent of music I would have heard my Mum play at home. I don’t specifically see why in 1974 this would have been pioneering personally. Probably deserves 3 but this is about what I think so 2. I really had to preserver to get this album done.
Firstly, I love Joni Mitchell's Blue which might even make my top five of all time. Then a lot of her later stuff I find a bit bland. That runs true with this album, vocally still great but the music is somehow less raw than her earlier stuff and sounds a bit schmaltzy. Dare I say "middle of the road"? I am reminded of my primary school music teacher shamelessly playing over-sentimental tunes on the school piano for singing assembly. An average album from a great artist.
Not my cup of tea, and I like a wide variety of tea.
Liked the music more than the voice. I never cared for Joni Mitchell’s voice growing up and that still stands. Very talented artist, just not my taste.1
Oh boy Who suggested this? A regular Joe or a music critic? Joni Mitchell’s music is about as appealing as wet farting in a pair of white pants while teaching a high school class full of delinquents. Catch my drift? So then I throw out any ill feelings towards what I know Joni Mitchell to be. Results? It’s the same. It’s whiney even though I’m sure she doesn’t mean it to be. It’s not catchy although I’m sure she meant it to be. The music alone isn’t even that good. The only positive is that it at least blends well together. I just don’t see anything good in this album otherwise. Might I suggest listening to Fiona Apple instead
Bof ! I was curious to hear an album by Joni because I had only heard her famous stuff. This isn’t that. Not my thing, voice is annoying and the music all sounds the same, too folky for me. I’m going to listen to some of her later stuff instead apparently it’s more rock jazz
I don't like her free-flowing songwriting style at all. The jazz and pop inflections just make worse, IMO. Not a good listen.
Rating based on likelihood of listening again. It took repeated listening to appreciate this album. I'm not really fond of her voice on most tracks, but I enjoyed the lyrics and the stories told.
I know she’s one of the most acclaimed songwriters out there but I just didn’t find any of it that interesting to listen to.
Her voice is good and the songs were ok, just nothing to set the pulse racing.
She’s a really great lyricist (albeit I don’t think I’m the ideal audience for the subject matter), however, I’m just not into her songwriting as such.
Boring
Not my thing, but Down to You is lovely; very 90s-film-soundtrack sounding. Love the jazzy number at the end though! Very unexpected from her.
2 - White lady with a guitar sings folksy songs. Nothing wrong with the album just not for me.
Vocals unsettled me, almost not in time. I enjoyed the instrumental, if I could remove the vocals I would. Raised on robbery is not bad I enjoyed that song! Twisted instrumental complemented her voice great song my new album favourite great jazzy track!
Pleasant voice, nice instrumentation. Don't particularly care for listening to someone describing things in a sing songy voice though. I'm left wondering what exactly the point is?
Folksy, pleasant. I would listen in a park
Not a fan of Joni's voice. I understand she's a big deal in some circles, but I'm unable to appreciate the appeal. This album takes me back to being left home alone in a cabin in the woods with nothing but yellow tinged books, shag carpeting an an old record player with a few records. I'm pretty sure this was in there. Basically, aside from the dozens of photo albums of black and white photos of people I didn't know and the antlers above the fireplace, it was pretty boring. If I had to choose one standout song, it'd be the last track Twisted, because its different than the rest and it's also the last track on the album.
2.3 Really can't do Joni's voice. 1 of every 5 songs is bearable but the rest, actually slightly jarring to be honest. Really not for me.
I know she gets high praise in some circles, but I was underwhelmed by this. Easy listening, sure, but there are plenty of other easy listening artists from the period that I would choose over this…
Oof, there’s a lot to dislike here. So much so that I don’t feel the need to put together a list.
I had my AirPods on and when her voice came in on the first song it freaked me out! It’s like she was whispering in my ear next to me (and not in a good way). I mean…it’s fine. Not really my cup of tea and if I feel like if I listen to much more I might turn into a 60 year old lesbian.
I knew this day would come. And I always thought Joni would be deserving of a 1* bomb, but she is saved by my own ratings scale. I can't bring myself to say this is unlistenable...so it isn't a 1*. But it still sucks and she is overrated. 2/5
2 Stars I just don't understand it, it's not my type. The melody feels ok and feels "free" like a bird. Other than that, I don't understand anything from this album. This is the second album that I have rated and I don't want to stress it too much, but this is not really my type.
Folkie did not enjoy
Inte min grej, gick att ha i bakgrunden, men lägre skiktet av den kategorin
Not my cup of tea but easy to listen to
Glazed over this one. Not a massive fan of this style. Onto more albums.
Okay not awful. But please no more Joni Mitchell albums.
Pretty boring and repetitive
Not my favourite genre but Joni has a great voice. Help me was my favourite song of this album. Album grew on me as I continued to listen.
She has a voice like Amy Mann and the songwriting skills Bob Dylan but for some reason I can't get into it
She's a great vocalist don't get me wrong
I've heard this album before. Not much of a Joni Mitchell fan. I'd like her a lot more if she had more songs like Raised on Robbery and Twisted. But all the other jazzy shit with pretentious and surprisingly misogynistic lyrics is better left forgotten.
It sounds pleasant enough but it's just boring. Nothing egregiously wrong but also nothing of interest. I'm also not a big fan of Mitchell's singing. Favorites: Car on a Hill, Trouble Child
I can't do it, man. I hate this stuff. Lightweight, meandering warbling that, I agree, shoulda been a poem. Feel like this is an inverted version of women reading Hemingway and hating it.
Not my cup of Tea! I usually like 70s music but this is one of the albums I would skip. One good song through it was Raised on Robbery IMO.
I owe Joni more time, but I've always had an averse reaction to Big Yellow Taxi and this album didn't help my impression of her. I found it pretty throughout but the closing stretch really lost me. As one of two 1001 albums a day singer songwriter album I've been suggested, I found myself putting it head to head again Joan Armatradings 1976 album and most popular track from it "Love and Affection", which I can't help but think beats probably everything but the opening minute and a half from "Help Me". 2/5
I just have a hard time with her voice. Not for me.
This is #day111 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it was mostly okayish, but not to the extent I'd be willing to turn back to this album in the future. Besides, I suspect more from Joni Mitchell will come down the road. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day112.
Not AS terrible as her other offerings.
This is certainly a joni mitchell album. 2/5
Не понравилось. Такое ощущение, что поёт невпопад: музыка отдельно, слова отдельно. Хотя отдельно и вокал хороший, и музыка приятная
I find it quite boring unfortunately
