Reviews (page 2 of 7)
This is not a vibe 1
One of the other reviews said that this sounds like joke music and I'd have to agree 😭 I've waited this long to learn what 'smooth' apparently sounds like and I was better off not knowing
The decades haven't changed my opinion of this album. I find it outrageously dull, and void of any of the soul it seeks to chase
This is the type of soul that drives me nuts. I just can't handle all this wishy washy weenie singing.
If you fed Stevie Wonder into a low grade AI algorithm and plugged in 90s level synths you wouldn't get something as bland as this.
Not a fan. Obnoxious and annoying.
The absolute definition of dull.
Punk smooth r&b
Hang me.
I really didn't know what to expect coming into this, to be honest. If I had to make a guess, I genuinely thought I would dislike this, but I didn't really have a clear reason why. But I couldn't have been more wrong. This is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever listened to, from start to finish. This is beautifully written, performed, and produced. I adored the vocals, the lyricism, and most of all the instrumentation. I think that usually this is slightly too long for a top-to-bottom kind of listen, but I was absolutely pulled into this album from the start, and to be honest, I'd have been fine with it being even longer. 'The Urban Theme' was a really lovely way to open this album, setting the mood without even having to use vocals. Beautiful. I can't leave out how brilliant the vocals were though... I know I mentioned I enjoyed them, but they were absolutely gorgeous throughout. Favourites: Welcome Sumthin' Sumthin' Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)
Phenomenal R&B
Sensational.
YEAAS THE SMOOVEST OF JAMS
absolute banger! love you can hear (pause)! best musical adult love album. sades producer worked on it aswell. listened to the album 2 times in a row that day😵💫
Fabulous, deliciously smooth and consistently good throughout
rnb?? Idk what it was but it was AMAZING
This is ... divine! I don't quite know what to say but for the idea that this is indeed a fantastic find for me. It is likely to have eluded me because it escapes my typical genre picks, but this funk, soul, love song genre is outstanding. I actually love this album. Sad how somehow mainstream music, which is in-itself not anything bad or anything, but it excludes anything that is too... maybe genre specific? IDK... But this is like ... crooner music that is so smooth it works really really well! Yeah, this is so worth popping in as background at a quieter party or something, just to watch as people start to pay attention and groove.
The smoothest album on this list so far. I instantly got in to the vibe and my mind just relaxed, turned off and started enjoying the music. Some songs that started a bit faster weren't my favorites but the added saxophone in them still made them something I wont skip in the future. Overall a great album and experience.
Muy buen disco, como para escucharlo tranquilo, buenos ritmos de R&B. Totalmente recomendado
Vraiment très cool, super ambiance!
Honestly I have no real criticisms here. It is great and dynamic and yeah here have a 5
Great Album, up there with very best in Neo Soul. I maybe like it even more tha Voodoo
Such a groove, really enjoyed this one and honestly surprised to see the lower reviews
Really solid musicianship, so much soul, loved this one.
Very soulful and enjoyable
Very good
Velvet, candles, and grown feelings in slow motion. Rating: 4.7/5 Short Review: This album is smooth without being empty. It feels intimate, patient, and quietly confident, like someone who knows restraint is more powerful than volume. Favorite Track: Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder). Effortless groove, pure warmth.
Sex, quite simply
Eu realmente estava dentro de uma suíte! Sedução, tranquilidade e calmaria.
Whoa. This album is so funky. It's giving the ending theme of Jojo's Part 5. I loved every minute of this sexy ass album, gotta keep this in mind for vibes in the future. Organic five star, where's the fault??
salivating oh my goddddddddddddd
A square could turn into a circle listening to this album. It's so smooth. 5/5
Just beautiful to listen to
Loved this. Ignore the haters Maxwell !!
Classic
My first listen appreciated the first half of the record more so than the rest of the project, but I was still enjoying the mood. The replay value is insane here, the original version of this record teases you at the end with one of the climactic tracks from the middle, giving you just enough of a taste to consider a circle back. Repeated listens got me appreciating the concept. It's a love story that's been chopped up into individual songs displaying genuine human emotion, that also happen to work really well together. The influences here, I can hear Marvin, Michael, lest we mention the all-stars that are literally playing the instruments. I wasn't expecting to be this impressed with each different aspect of production, while also enjoying the music for what it is as it comes out. 4.5/5
Smooth R&B that's a nice way to start my Friday. I enjoyed the first track and feel like the entire album kept with that vibe. Some of the sax work had a nice Grover Washington Jr. feel to it. His album Winelight should be on this list also.
Easy 5 stars. Amazing album from a man who has the silky smooth voice. No skips required
A 5 after track 1. Keeps going like it. Very smooth.
90% Best: The Urban Theme; Welcome; Sumthin' Sumthin'; Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder); Dancewitme; ...Til the Cops Come Knockin'; Suitelady (The Proposal Jam); The Suite Theme Must-Hear? Yes
You know when you see that beautiful girl walking by & you think "If I could just somehow get with her, the sex woukd be amazing!"? This album is what that sex sounds like. Maxwell's probably an uncle to dozens of kids cause of this record! I know I used it on more then one woman in my life!
Loved this for ages.
Love this album. Have heard before. R&B neo soul.
this album cured my g.i. issues
Part of the neo-soul Trinity
<3
Pas mal du tout, quelques bangers (Ascension, Sumthin' Sumthin')
So smooth!
Back in March I gave this album a relisten and was reminded of just how good it was. I was honestly surprised, but elated that it showed up on this list. Giving it another listen this morning brought out no complaints from me.
This was..... magical. Just so good, I was transported to a penthouse suite overlooking some city I've never been to. It was perfection. Start to finish!!!! I didn't want it to end. I 100% would get this on vinyl and then laze about my house like I make 3x the amount I do. Also this just has that late 90s sound that is so nostalgic to me. Even disney movies during that time had at least one song like this on every album! This is a masterclass in the genre however.
Don't listen to these other reviews. This isn't just background music. This is super detailed R&B featuring swathes of jazz, funk, and pop with great melodies and impeccable production. This is quite an achievement for a debut album. 5.0/5.0: Iconic
First time hearing this album from start to finish. What a soulful record. A lot of jams on this, so well produced.
Dude. This is my favorite R&B album ever!
So smooth! This album is going on the sex playlist 🗿🍷
Great album
Ugh!! So good. Gorgeous and funky! Sick bass lines, groovy keyboards, multiple horns!! Breezy, floating vocals. This is everything.
Love the album, it gives driving in a lowrider, chill and relaxing, gives nostalgic and throwback music you find from your parents or grandparents, and you end up loving it. The only issue is that the songs are lengthy, about 5 to 6 minutes each, and there's not much diversity in the songs and album, but I like that it is all a similar vibe, so it depends on the type of person you are.
I bought it on release and have listened to it hundreds of times since then. An album I know very well. I absolutely love every single track. It's the sort of album that sounds better with every listen, and it definitely sounds better if you listen to the full album in order.
Absolutely stellar vibe.
Groovy, baby.
Amazing electronic/soul/r&b mix - like James brown but modern.
One of my faves.
Right off the cuff, i'm loving the groove. Good album to play when you're spending some time with that special lady.
AHHHH this came out in '96 and thus began the massive crush on Maxwell...he reignited R&B soul crooning - the next Teddy P - I was at a Maxwell show and the women were literally !! throwing their panties on the stage. I LOVE this album and still listen to it. Fantastic sound vibe groove 1st 4 tracks are blissfully gorgeous for me, love him!
Good vibes all round - making love til the cops knock a very funny concept
A sexy record that makes one want to have sex – more and sexier sex. As good as neo-soul/R&B ever got, and not just 'cos it's a panty dropper, but because it gets damn near everything else right, too.
my mom had this cd in her collection, its been on my listening list for a minute now. my friend was in my room looking at my cd collection which mostly were given to me from my parents old collection. He was looking and said "Your parents probably conceived you to one of these album". Really funny and gross comment and worst part is, the more I listen to their CDs from their collections its starting to seem likely that he was right. skin crawlingly disgusting to think about and its lowkey kind of ruining the music for me ignoring that this album is so unbelievably smooth. Soul/RNB is at its best when it smooth as hell in my opinion and this album proves me right. He did a call pussy a "Dark World" at one point in the album, so it definitely far from perfect, however its still an enjoyable listening experience. Its a shame I put listening to this CD sooner. im gonna give a 5/5 on this website but it like more of a 4.4987/5 in my opinion and im not gonna elaborate
A classic album. More jazzy than I remember
Amazing album! How did I miss this one when it first dropped? Love the eclectic vibe of soul, a little funk, and R&B.
Now we’re talking! Almost a sin to listen to this on the way to work; it’s a total bedroom album in all the best ways. Panties definitely dropped when you started playing “Welcome” back in the day, lol. I loved this album partly because we were deep in the R. Kelly, “dirty sex” era of music… this was different; sexy not dirty. Probably one of my top Neo Soul albums from the 90s which is saying something; there were a lot of classics to choose from this time. I’d even go so far as saying the 90s Neo Soul movement led by Maxwell, Erkah Badu, Alicia Keys, D’Angelo and several others rivals the 70s soul golden era, easily: 😱😱😱, but I stand by it!
Oh wow! What a groovy album . One may say its repetitive or sounds like a basic 90s R&B album , but that's what I love about it . The funk , the underlying bases , his soothing voice , the dirty but progressive lyrics almost brings a sense of nostalgia . This is a baby making album and is very sexy in nature.
Sexy bedroom loving music.
I enjoyed the sultry, sexy vibe of this soulful album. Like a lot of new-to-me artists on this list, its presence highlights some obvious omissions (**paging Barry White**). Still, I very much enjoyed chilling out to this and it lowered my blood pressure several much-needed notches.
5/5. A chill and smooth soul and R&B album with disco elements. I love that the tempo slows with each song, creating a more intimate and sexy album as based on the concept. There is not really a bad song on here with serious and expressive songwriting. The songs are long but such a great album to vibe to.
Deep neo-soulful night grooves. This, along with Sade, is exactly what my soul needs right now in 2024. So good on first listen. 5 big stars!!
Top Album. Totally Cool.
Amazing
This is what Neo-Soul is all about. A lot of the original songs I had heard and was never able to identify again. IT'S SEXY, IT'S CLASSIC, IT IS A MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT IN IT'S GENRE
This feels like a mix between hip-hop and jazz, and I loved it. I listened to this album a couple of times, and then let Spotify keep going with similar music, but I heard nothing like this artist. It's great.
This album is incredible. Incredibly relaxing and easy to listen to. Only grievance was that it felt slightly too long, I think you could get rid of Reunion and Suitelady and it would be a perfect length.
I’ve always loved Maxwell It’s good to know he pioneered Neo Soul
This album holds up! Classic soulful R&B. This will get you laid.

1996 - Soul music, Neo soul, Contemporary R&B, Funk, Jazz, Urban contemporary music, Quiet storm, Smooth jazz, Retro-soul
This is one of the more influential albums of Neo Soul. If you like D'Angelo you'll like that. And I do. I think Maxwell is even better because his smoothness and lyrical focus makes this a more coherent album that has also some more interesting instrumentation than the first two D'Angelo albums.
One of the greatest R&B albums ever made. No other notes.
Really digging this one as I listen to it.
L O V E This is music. Happy that everyone that goes through this list has to stop through the groove station. Pure Groove.
Great album! So soulful, smooth, funky.
Superb album a stroke of pure genius the album oozes quality from every note.
This promises a lot on Wikipedia, so I'm ready for the swing and gliding entry of the opening track of The Shagadelic Love Pad, I mean "Urban Hang Suite". you guys hated it, but for me, its grooving sexy beats get more and more mellow and sensual using all the tell tell sounds, until its obviously romance atmosphere music and dimly lit hotel room or rug by the fire scenery comes to mind. I managed until track 10 before It actually felt a bit too cheesy and self conscious, by the time its The Suite Theme is very post coital somnolence. ha, this is so cheesy and cool, and done with such a straight face, that it made me smile. I see why the Algo suggested to play next songs from Marvin Gaye and George Howard (but not Barry WHite, that would have been too much!)
This album was part of the neo-soul soul revival. This album, more than any other album brought my attention to modern soul/r&b as not just the stuff I heard on the radio that was all about getting in someone's pants. I mean there is some of that here, it is Maxwell and he is smooth, but this is more of chill at night with someone you care about and want to be close to. It's an album for mature love with smooth rolling bass lines and one of the all time great singers - who is just effortless
a r&b hang out record. Acension is still one of the best songs of the past 30 years. His voice is silky smooth. The height of neo-soul.
Loved this super slick and super chill
Йоу, добро пожаловать на Late Night Show Очень стильное классическое R&B, звуки которого я уверен засемпловали с удовольствием. Скачал на плеер, запустил на колоночках и кайфанул
cool
super fun - 9/10 maybe this should’ve come out 20 years earlier but I’m not complaining good vibes
A debut from a twentysomething that is a concept album about a relationship. Sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. I bought this when it was first released, and it blew me away. It still does. While there are refences to Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and Al Green, Maxwell's view is his own. A great listen from start to finish.
If Mamas Gun was the companion to Voodoo this is the precursor. Jazz influenced R&B which feels both classic and modern at the same time. The title perfectly describes what we hear, as the songs flow seamlessly into each other. My only criticism is that some of the songs are a little too similar to each other but overall this is a great album.
Good
Smooth and funky
Why I have never heard this before? I don't know if it just didn't get any airplay or land in the UK, but this ought to have been massive. By turns funky and mellow, and the warmness of the production just draws you in. An album you need to listen to in one go.
Sexy rnb
This is straight-up bang-time music. Red curtains, candles, glasses of wine...yeah, this is great.
this is now on regular, workday rotation. great background for cleaning out Outlook...
A masterpiece by Maxwell and yes, the boy can sing.
Really smooth R&B, like really really. Might as well be the soundtrack to a porno. It kind of meanders a lot and doesn't really try to put forth many regular songs. Doesn't really need to though. It sounds good and fits a certain vibe really well.
The way I feel about this album is similar to how I felt about the D'Angelo album. Its a bit one note, but when that note is sung with a voice a smooth as Maxwell's I can't complain too much. I just happen to like the D'Angelo album a bit more. Also I find the lyrics to "Till the Cops Come Knockin" more concerning than sexy. 3.5 rounded up to a 4/5
Cool neo soul ot neo funk or rnb or something... something. I dont really know what it is but all I know is its good. Every song is good. Lots of sex jams thats for sure. But some great bass lines and great grooves. Im a simple man. If it grooves it grooves. Guy seems like a pretty unique and singular voice. When I went to see the recommended tracks after it was alot of just him. Seems like a one of a kind guy. Id say he pretty much is. Im less into alot of the slower stuff but only a little bit. Its all good stuff. 2 thumbs up
vibes
very smooth, enjoyable listen. 4/5.
I can’t make up a reason
absolutely perfect soundtrack for my Friday night in the kitchen. Jen reminded me we had this on our ancillary list but I can't remember my review.
Favorite track(s): Sumthin' Sumthin', Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), ...Til the Cops Come Knockin', Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)
enjoyable jazzy r&b, will listen again
Nice classic soul revival style here; Funky and sexy. Sometimes sounds like it is straight out of the late '60s or early '70s, which I intend as a strong compliment. I'm not always wild about the production here, and the vocals can sometimes be too much, but neither are persistent and neither are dealbreakers for me.
Super-slinky soul/funk/R&B slow-jams. Sax, piano, funky bass, synths, drum machine, bongos, soul/funk vocals. A whole lotta smooth. "Whenever Wherever Whatever" deviates slightly as a percussionless and pretty guitar, piano, and vocals ballad. Put the needle down and just soak up all the groooovezzz.
Chill, moody, sensual. I feel bad that I was at work and not sipping coffee in a cafe downtown during a rainstorm.
Really groovy. I can’t quite give it a five as I think the actually thought and writing is a little lackluster, and the repetitive track doesn’t carry it
No nyt on tosi smoothia ja chilliä, pää nyökkyy. Maukkaat basso groovet. Alkupuoli oli menevämpää, aika funkkiakin mutta loppupää sit rauhallisempaa RnB. Tykkäsin alusta enemmän. Mut tosi tunnelmallista kokonaisuudessaan. Parhaat: The Urban Theme, Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), The Suite Theme
Maxwell is not responsible for the increase of partner's sex appeal while listening to this album. Maxwell cannot be held responsible for the following: broken beds, pregnancy, missed phone calls, or torn clothing.
Very chill. Very smooth. Great example of excellent soul.
Tranqui
Pretty chill, like smooth jazz ala hip hop. A few tracks were so-so, but I think I enjoyed the others enough to give the album a, “will definitely listen to this again,” rating.
Loved the early funky songs but it got more sensual r&b as the album went on which I didn't care for as much
Never really listen to this style of music, but I really liked. I like the groove.
8/10
Absolutely enjoyed this, love wah-wah
pretty solid r&b album notable : till the cops come knocking 3.5/5
some banger funk highlights: the urban suite, welcome, ascension, til the cops come knockin 3.5/5
Chill Balearic sundown vibes. I like.
J’ai trop aimé, la vibe et tout
nice jazz r&b album
So smooth I was falling out of my chair
Best Song: Welcome. This, along with the opening track, got the album off so quickly into such a deep groove that it basically stunlocked me. Worst Song: Whenever Wherever Whatever. I actually found it quite a sweet and melodic song, but it has such a smiling pop quality to it that it completely clashed with the soul and R&B of the rest of the album. Overall: The latter half ended up disappointing slightly relative to the start of the album, but I'll be damned if I didn't really enjoy this. Fun, beautifully layered, soulful music. Music that feels good to listen to.
First listened on 2nd and 3rd August 2025. Favourite songs are Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) and ...Til the Cops Come Knockin'.
Very smooth, production is great all around
Yummy
Lovely!
good vocals. excellent production. maybe a few minutes too long? great stuff.
listened to this half asleep and honestly i think that made me like it way way more, great album to chill to. also lol @ all the reviews thirsting over his voice
It turned out I knew Sumthin' Sumthin' and Ascension. Very smooth album. Nice bass. I thought I heard a lady singing sometimes, so that's a pretty versatile voice.
Another neo-soul album?!? I'm here for it! This is a great album. 90s/00s R&B is the best R&B, the era of the Slow Jam. Sumthin' Sumthin' followed by Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), two great songs. I always liked D'Angelo more than Maxwell, this album isn't changing my position on that. This is a good album though, everything is solid to great. Dancewitme is good. This feels very much of its time. The first half of the album is definitely stronger.
Сара 4 Марко 4
This has a real MJ vibe, am I totally off there? Really fun dance-y R&B. I am digging it, not really the music I gravitate to day to day but I think I could listen to this whole thing top to bottom and bop to it. Love it. It's a really great sound.
****
Man, I really vibed with this today. What a voice! Smooooooth. Favorite track was Reunion.
Everyone’s making fun of how smooth this is, but the musicians are top notch!! They’re in a groove all over this thing. And it lends very well to Maxwell’s voice. I feel this album would have been better if it was just a little bit shorter. A solid 9 or 10 songs. Overall, I enjoyed this. I heard a lot of these songs growing up and my band often covers Ascension. Was good to sit down with this album front to back though. 3.75 for me. But going to round it up to a 4.
I'm learning that I like Neo-Soul. The opening guitar drew me in. It got a little stale toward the end, which is the only thing keeping it from five stars.
This really surprised me. The grooves are smooth, but the musicianship underneath is serious. The chords and progressions lean into jazz territory, and everything feels tight and intentional. It’s not heavy, but it has depth and a kind of sophistication that pulls me in.
Amazing
Hørte æ på det her i 1996-7-8? Nei. Kunne æ like gjerne ha gjort det? Ja. Nostalgisk på en sånn «æ e glad æ e voksen nu»-måte.
already saw the vibe coming with the opening track. god, i love when the album just presents the mood from the first note. this reminds me of city pop mixed with super classy r&b, like a party being played during a lazy afternoon. i wish it had a little bit more backing vocals supporting his voice, because when they are there? soooo good. nothing too revolutionary, but well done. pleasant to the ears, nice to play while you're chilling. the instrumental is a bit dreamy without losing grip of reality. the bass brings the groove forward, and that's what holds the whole thing together. maxwell has a nice voice, raspy in certain moments, but matching the nonchalant quietness the songs need. and on "ascension (don't ever wonder)" and "dancewitme" goes so smooth, i loved. I can see small details that could be improved overall, but this is a solid album. worth listening to again.
vibey album with jazzy instrumentals with funky rhythms, so smoooth.. Favorite track: Ascension other picks: sumthin sumthin, till the cops come knocking
LOVE this
I'll search for detailed information about Maxwell's debut album "Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite" to provide you with a comprehensive review. # Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite (1996) — In-Depth Review Released on April 2, 1996, *Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite* stands as one of the most significant debut albums in R&B history and a cornerstone of the neo-soul movement. Recorded when Maxwell was just 21-22 years old, this concept album traces the complete arc of a romantic relationship—from chance encounter to marriage proposal—across 11 tracks and nearly 65 minutes of lush, live instrumentation. --- ## The Concept & Narrative Structure Maxwell constructed the album as a **cinematic love story**, deliberately sequenced to follow a relationship's progression: - **"The Urban Theme"** — An instrumental overture setting the sophisticated, late-night atmosphere - **"Welcome"** — The seductive first encounter - **"Sumthin' Sumthin'"** — Playful courtship and flirtation - **"Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)"** — Spiritual and emotional connection - **"Dancewitme"** — Physical chemistry and groove - **"...Til the Cops Come Knockin'"** — Passionate intimacy - **"Whenever, Wherever, Whatever"** — Vulnerability and devotion - **"Lonely's the Only Company"** — Separation and longing - **"Reunion"** — Reconciliation - **"Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)"** — Commitment - **"The Suite Theme"** — A reprise that brings the narrative full circle This structure was directly inspired by Marvin Gaye's cinematic albums like *What's Going On* and *I Want You* . Maxwell specifically chose to bookend the album with instrumental versions of the same theme—a technique Gaye employed—to create a cohesive, film-like experience . --- ## Musical Style & Production ### The Sound Palette The production represents a **deliberate rejection** of the sample-heavy, programmed hip-hop soul dominating mid-90s radio. Instead, Maxwell opted for: - **Live instrumentation** throughout, including wah-wah guitars, Rhodes keyboards, acoustic bass, and horns - **Jazz-funk influences** reminiscent of 1970s soul - **Tempos rarely exceeding 100 BPM**, creating a languid, unhurried atmosphere - **Intimate, spacious mixing** that emphasizes the rhythm section's "pocket" ### Key Collaborators The album features an impressive roster of musicians that bridges classic soul and contemporary R&B: - **Stuart Matthewman** (Sade's saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist) — Added the sophisticated, smoky textures that define the album's atmosphere - **Leon Ware** — Co-writer of "Sumthin' Sumthin'" who had penned most of Marvin Gaye's *I Want You* album - **Melvin "Wah Wah" Watson** — Marvin Gaye's guitarist, bringing authentic 70s soul guitar textures - **Hod David** — Maxwell's collaborator who co-wrote "Dancewitme" and played on multiple tracks ### Production Techniques Maxwell and his team employed **vintage recording aesthetics**: - Scratched vinyl intros creating a sense of timelessness - Extended instrumental passages and vamps that allow grooves to breathe - Dynamic restraint—knowing when *not* to play - The album was largely self-produced, remarkable for a debut --- ## Lyrical Themes ### Monogamous Romance At a time when hip-hop and R&B increasingly celebrated casual encounters and material success, *Urban Hang Suite* was **radically committed to monogamous love**. The lyrics explore: - **Spiritual connection through physical intimacy** — "Ascension" frames love as a transcendent, almost religious experience - **Vulnerability as strength** — Maxwell presents emotional openness without irony - **The politics of time and space** — The compressed narrative (meeting to proposal) suggests that profound connection transcends temporal constraints ### Notable Lyricism - **"Whenever, Wherever, Whatever"** — A ballad of absolute devotion with poetic economy: *"I am not a god, I am not a saint / I am just a man who loves you more than words can say"* - **"Suitelady"** — The proposal track that transforms domestic commitment into seduction: *"Be my wife, be my wife, be my wife, suitelady"* The writing avoids the histrionics typical of R&B ballads, favoring **understated directness** that mirrors the musical restraint . --- ## Vocal Performance Maxwell's voice operates in a **distinctive falsetto-tenor range** with characteristics that became his signature: - **Breathy intimacy** — Close-mic'd vocals that create the sensation of whispered confessions - **Melodic economy** — No gratuitous runs or showboating; every note serves the song - **Conversational phrasing** — Lyrics delivered as natural speech rather than formal singing - **Dynamic subtlety** — Mastery of quiet moments and pregnant pauses Critics noted the influences of **Michael Jackson, Prince, and Marvin Gaye**, but Maxwell synthesized these into something distinctly his own—less aggressive than Prince, less virtuosic than Jackson, more vulnerable than Gaye . --- ## Cultural Impact & Influence ### The Birth of Neo-Soul While D'Angelo's *Brown Sugar* (1995) arrived first, *Urban Hang Suite* **solidified neo-soul's commercial viability**. Together with albums by Erykah Badu, The Roots, and Meshell Ndegeocello, it established a movement that: - Rejected the synthetic production of New Jack Swing and hip-hop soul - Reconnected R&B to its 1970s organic roots - Prioritized album-oriented listening over singles-driven marketing - Embraced Afrocentric aesthetics and natural imagery ### Commercial Trajectory The album was a **sleeper hit**: - Debuted at No. 38 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart - Columbia Records initially struggled to market Maxwell's "throwback" style during hip-hop's commercial dominance - Through persistent touring (including an initially rough opening slot for Fugees and Groove Theory), urban radio support, and video rotation on BET/VH1/MTV, the album achieved **platinum status by 1998** - Earned a **Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album** in 1996 ### Lasting Legacy - Established Maxwell as an **album-oriented artist** in a singles-driven genre, setting the template for his subsequent sparse release schedule (four studio albums across 25+ years) - Influenced a generation of "alternative R&B" artists including Frank Ocean, Miguel, and Daniel Caesar - The album's **sexual sophistication**—treating intimacy with maturity rather than crassness—became a blueprint for modern R&B --- ## Strengths (Pros) | Aspect | Assessment | |--------|------------| | **Cohesion** | Unprecedented for a debut; the concept album structure holds together flawlessly | | **Musicianship** | World-class players (Matthewman, Watson, Ware) create authentic 70s textures without pastiche | | **Vocal Control** | Maxwell's restraint and intimacy remain distinctive; no oversinging | | **Production Values** | Warm, organic sound that has aged remarkably well—still sounds contemporary | | **Song Sequencing** | The narrative arc creates momentum despite slow tempos | | **Standout Tracks** | "Ascension," "Sumthin' Sumthin'," "Whenever, Wherever, Whatever," and "...Til the Cops Come Knockin'" are genre classics | | **Cultural Timing** | Offered a sophisticated alternative to the increasingly aggressive hip-hop/R&B mainstream | --- ## Weaknesses (Cons) | Aspect | Assessment | |--------|------------| | **Monotony Risk** | The consistent mid-tempo groove and similar sonic palette can feel **repetitive** across 65 minutes; some listeners find it "too smooth" | | **Length** | Several tracks extend beyond 6 minutes with instrumental vamps that, while tasteful, test attention spans | | **Limited Sonic Range** | Unlike D'Angelo's *Voodoo* (2000), which explored experimental textures, *Urban Hang Suite* stays within a **comfortable, predictable sonic zone** | | **Second Half Drag** | The transition from the funky first half to the ballad-heavy second half **slows momentum** for some listeners | | **Lyrical Depth** | While sincere, the lyrics rarely achieve the **poetic complexity** of Gaye or Mayfield; the "baby-making music" focus can feel one-dimensional | | **Guitar Tones** | Some critics find certain guitar sounds **cheesy or dated**, resembling "Garageband loops from 2004" rather than authentic 70s textures | --- ## Final Assessment *Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite* is a **remarkable achievement for a 22-year-old debut artist**—fully realized, conceptually ambitious, and musically sophisticated. It successfully bridged 1970s soul aesthetics with 1990s production clarity, helping to birth the neo-soul movement while maintaining commercial appeal. The album's greatest strength is its **unwavering commitment to a specific mood and vision**—sophisticated, intimate, unhurried romance. Its greatest limitation is that this very specificity can feel **monochromatic** to listeners seeking variety or edge. **Verdict:** Essential listening for understanding 1990s R&B and the neo-soul movement. While it may not achieve the experimental heights of D'Angelo's later work, it perfects a particular lane—elegant, sensual, live-band soul—that few have navigated as successfully since. **Rating:** 4/5 — A foundational text of modern R&B, slightly diminished by its own consistency.
Make some babies!
This was a relaxing enjoyable listen. Great vocals by Maxwell instrumentation is excellent. Love the sax work. Great LP for a relaxing romantic night with a loved one.
giga smooth
No soy el más fan de este género, pero definitivamente este es el RnB más duro que he escuchado Ese debut no tiene fallos Reescuchable 100%
Masterful uptempo beats. Sags towards the end.
Nice for bike riding, but forgettable... +1 for good productiin and bass sound
Never heard of him but what an album.
Really good R&B album from the 90’s. Maxwell has a great voice - smooth with a nice falsetto. Notable tracks include Sumthin Sumthin, Ascension, Dancewitme, Whenever Wherever Whatever, Reunion.
Groovy soul vibes.
Very relaxing.
This was a wonderful new listen for me. I had never heard of Maxwell before this album but I really enjoyed it! I enjoyed the album, the concept of the album, mostly everything. I discovered new songs and found Maxwells voice very beautiful. It was a great R&B album!
Nice
Smooth but at times too smooth. 8ish
9,5/10
Great, never heard of him before but I’m an instant fan.
a fire vibe
Nice RAnd B ad soul mix but did not blow me away and there are plenty of artists doing the same thing
quite good melodies
Great music, good singing, bad lyrics. Great audiophile listen on headphones. I'd give it a 3.5
Really funky vibes. Great calming background sounds. Subtle
So smooth. So chill. A good listen from beginning to end. 4/5
A totally pleasant surprise! Maxwell’s great and more people should listen to him. Everything made sexier thanks to this album!

Pretty good. Guy likes a long jam!
Liked this one a good bit. Perhaps its was the setting (early morning drive to work)? Will relisten for sure.
This was awesome. So perfectly R&B. This took me back to a particular time in my life. Where I worked then, what I drove, etc. thanks for this.
GROOVY GROOVY GROOVYYY i love all of the bass lines and guitar licks? riffs? on this album so much, Dancewitme is like PEAK grooviness, Whenever Wherever Whatever sounds like a Spanish love song ngl
Fantastic driving to work early morning music
silky smooth and buttery soft neo-soul. an incredibly humid album. warm and sultry, relaxed and totally at ease, the album is an hour of lush arrangements, jazzy sax, porno funk bass and keyboard parts, and falsetto crooning.
This album fucks.
Fun album, nice music. 4 stars
I mean…. 😅. It doesn’t get much smoother than this. Lie back and let it pour over you…
Me ha sorprendido para bien. 4.5
Sensual soul with down-tempo beats, what’s not to love! Fave tracks: Ascension, Dancewithme
This album can be summed up as one big relaxing groove.
An album of 'Quite Storm' music. It's basically smooth jazz/RnB/soul with some funk sometimes- think of Steely Dan for wealthy black people. It's meant to be played while sipping some whiskey neat or whatever almost background music as you talk or simply reflect on your day and how successful you are at life. It's also good background music for love making (your choice regular sex or kinky sex, enjoy a threesome!) or even just enjoying a good dinner in your condo paired with a special someone. I liked it pretty well. Reminds me of Luther Vandroose, Royce Roll, Neo Soul stuff, etc. you get the idea, right? Music to seduce when all is said & done. Seduce what? That's on you, player!
Pretty funky, sexy stuff. Sonically similar throughout, but super slick production. Favourite tracks: The Urban Theme, Sumthin' Sumthin' (has strong Somebody Else's Guy vibes), Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), ...Til the Cops Come Knockin' (creepy lyrics but banger).
apesar de ser bem diferente do que eu costumo ouvir, gostei. dá pra sentir a alma do blues, se isso faz sentido.
I feel like I just had sex.
Wow wow wow. What a blessed album to be the intro into my 1001 album journey. The Urban Theme and The Suite Theme?! Incredible conversation between the two, would highly recommend a back-to-back as a coda to the musical base for the 58-minute musical journey.
4.25/5 Stars Top Songs: Ascension, The Urban Theme and Suitelady(The Proposal Jam)
Anche un 4...
This is Sumthin’ Sumthin’
I am not much of an R&B ran, but this is a very solid album. Very good production and funky beats. Low 4.
Belongs in the book. "1001 Albums You Must Hear While Having Sex." This would be very near the top of that list.
Fuck, that's a sexy ass album
As debut records go they do not come any better. The scene is set as if the listener is entering a nightclub. Maxwell is a perfect host with themes of desire(till the cops come knocking), longing (sumthin sumthin) and religion (ascension). The last of the 3 possibly the song of the 90s. Little bit self indulgent towards the end of the album but what transpires before it make that easily forgiven.
Disco sinuoso, setoso. Di seta oro e rossa. Però un po' lunghetto.
Smooth af
I don't like the new-soul label just like most artists of that time did. I feels limiting. Maxwell did something that was throwback while all his own paying homage to artists before him and not catering to the sound of what was current and that give him his unique voice. The songs are soulful and carry a weight and resonance that echoes true still today which is why I can put this album on and immediately connect to songs like Ascension. As a whole this isn't one I can put on and listen to cover to cover but that doesn't diminish its goodness. I love Maxwell and even more so the later work. I'm still surprised he wasn't a bigger artist.
fantastic, slow-jam soul. Not a bad song on the album.
ovulating and yearning rn
Dope RnB
We don’t seem to have had many albums from this genre yet (almost 600 albums in), and it was a lovely surprise! Never heard of him, but hooked on the first half of it. Very smooooth, with some great bass playing and some funky wah-wah business going on. The vocalists were great. All very enjoyable, although the second half did seem to tail off and completely mellow out. I guess that was completely intentional. Reminded me of early Michael Jackson with a huge pinch of Fun Lovin’ Criminals.
One of the best neo-soul albums
Made me get back with my Ex. Lost my 3125 day No fap challenge streak. Bankrupted myself paying child support. On the bright side, atleast I didn't get it in November.
This is some good smooth jazz / soul / r&b vibe. I appreciate the actual music played on real instruments. This is a just some great chill, sexy-time music. I'd put this on as background for a date night or something. It does not require actively listening or examination of the depth of the lyrics. This is not that album. While not my favorite genre overall, I do like this. Might even go so far as to give it a 4.
Good r and b .
Maxwell getting a 4 from me and will definitely go into rotation, scratches a similar itch to Sade but a bit less sensual/deeply emotional and a bit more breezy/chill, deffo got a place for this - and the production is chef’s kiss
Didn't think I'd ever heard of this guy, although I did recognise Ascension. Anyway this was excellent and a surprise package. Borderline 5.
Smooth, jazzy, and sexy as hell.
A very chill record by, what I assume, is a pretty big name in '90s neo-soul. At least I think so - the name Maxwell is super familiar, but I can't say I was familiar with his stuff before this. He doesn't really stand out in any way vocally, I find, just a dude that's really good at what he does. He has a very nice falsetto, though - really shining through on the immensely smooth '...Till the Cops Come Knockin'''. The basslines here are tight and funky, the synths are prestigious and glittery, and the percussion is light, tight, and slick and the songs are laced with many little embellishments, keeping things interesting. So your typical solid Neo Soul record with some memorable songs here and there, like 'Sumthin' Sumthin'' and especially 'Ascension'. But the whole thing I find starts to feel a bit samey as it hits the 40-minute mark, or after the pretty enjoyable guitar ballad, 'Whenever Wherever Whatever'. It's honestly far too long for its own good. I'm sure I'd enjoy digesting this whole thing in one go in some background context, but as a dedicated listen, it was sort of fatiguing. Which sucks because there really wasn't a subpar moment here; it all sounds so good, but it's just a bit too much for me on first listen. Still great overall and a record I see myself revisiting in the future.
Extremely smooth
really really lovely
The vibes are all there, this is smooth
What started off as a chill way to begin my work day ended in realizing this is not the album to listen to while at work. Would do it again 😀
smoooooth. maxwell has an angelic voice. the bass lines were solid
This comes out at a 3.5* because each point I would like to add for making music that's horny without being creepy (a lost art) is just a little bit undercut by how god damn long all these neo-soul albums are
I remember this one... in the mid 90s I was all about post-punk, power-pop, and jazz. This (and US3) were the albums that pointed me the way to acid jazz, which I still love. It was fun revisiting it.
I tend to like classic soul more than neo-soul, but this was a very solid album. It opens very strong with some extremely groovy bass, which I love. It starts to drag a little toward the end, but still, quality album!
This is very much a time and place kind of thing. It certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea.
4 stars This is why I started this project. Covering blind spots. 90s neosoul R&B was not an area I had much background in. I had heard of Maxwell, but did not know his music. This album started out great with some old school funk, added in the slow jams and sexy lyrics. It was mostly consistent throughout, although it wears out a little towards the end. All in all a great listen that feels classic and timeless.
Not generally my kind of music: I generally don't love doin'-it-music. But, he has a great voice, and it's an objectively good album for the music genre.
just what I needed today
I really enjoyed this album. It came out in the mid-’90s, a time when it probably would’ve flown right past me, but damn, it’s such a smooth, funky jam. You can feel the fingerprints of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Barry White, Stevie Wonder, and Prince all over it, and Maxwell channels them beautifully without ever sounding like an imitation. Some of the instrumentals had me half-expecting Barry White to drop in and just say anything. The whole thing has that silky, romantic sound of an earlier era, yet it feels timeless. What really strikes me is how much it stood apart from the R&B and hip-hop dominating the charts back then. It’s more intimate, lush, and patient. A slow-burning classic that sounds like candlelight and velvet.
Very pleasant noises
Kinda nice and soothing
Extremely smooth, extremely funky. A great neo-soul record that I would point to as the exemplar of the genre. "Ascension" fucks.
Funky
I wasn't really thinking about lovemaking to this music - I was more imagining myself in a cafe by the sea on a midsummer's day. Fun listen overall, and I really enjoyed the storytelling throughout the album. R&B isn't always the sort of thing I reach out to listen to, but this was really refreshing overall. The only thing stopping it from an extra star was that nothing really stood out to me fully, but I guess for the sort of vibe it's going for, that's a fairly good thing. FAVOURITES: Sumthin' Sumthin', Whenever Wherever Whatever, Suitelady
very soothing
I liked it. Kinda funky jazzy
Generally groovy
Really strong, cohesive, and vibey album.
The opposite of birth control.
Funky
This is smooooth. Music tailored to the very slowest kind of love-making on a Sunday morning. The right mix of soul, funk, and silk. Like honey-scented lube.
Better than Coldplay
This was so nice. Though I did listen to this in the morning at work and it just made we want to get back into bed and be cozy, who could work at a time like this??
Super solid beginning to end
This was a real smooth experience.
Ik weet niet zeker of ik dit zou opzetten uit mezelf, maar het was wel eens cool om het te beluisteren. Heeft wat weg van een jazzy versie van Michael Jackson . 3.7
Nice
Great sounds, mood, vibe, voice but not quite 5 stars because many songs sound similar.
Good
Favorites: Sumthin' Sumthin', ...Til the Cops Come Knockin', Suitelady (The Proposal Jam) Incredibly hot and alluring record. Some incredible R&B jams here. If you like sex, this is for sure the record for you.
cool neo soul
I enjoyed this record, it was nice to chill out to, and I get the feeling this would be fun to dance to. I can hear how it influenced later r&b albums you hear Favorite Tracks: Til The Cops Come Knocking, Dancewitme, and The Suite Theme.
4-
Wow i was blown away by this. So obviously draws from 1970 and 1989 soul but also is ahead of its time. If my career fails and I have to become a barista I’m playing this every day
I actually really liked this album. The bass in this album makes me nut. Great tone. Makes me make the stinky bass face. The album flows really well and is an easy listen (in a good way). I don't usually listen to RnB, but I really enjoyed this one. 4/5
Starts off with some pretty lame Muzak but then once it gets into the groove I’m into it. Bass is thumping and Mr Maxwell is horny as hell, good RnB. Not my thing, but it’s definitely good. Light 4/5
Need to listen to it more, but definite 4 stars for me.
Dude, what are these reviewers on? This album slaps. It's so, so much better than what I imagined after reading "R&B" and "1996" in the same record description. This is what hip-hop should sound like. This sends a message, and dang it, it sounds smooth as heck. Half the reviews be like: - "This is the soundtrack of moist vaginas. 3 stars." (You meant 5 stars, right?) - "Smooth, funky baby-making music. 3 stars." (What the bum? Where's your baby-making patriotism?) - "A few nice funky parts but overall very boring r&b/soul. 1 star." (Hey, at least it's got melody, consistent harmony, instruments played by humans, and non-hateful lyrics. Already it's doing better than most 90s output.) - [paraphrased] "yeah this is the smoothest, sexiest, most insanely good R&B I've ever heard, but some of the tracks are a bit long. 1 star." In general, the instrumental is slightly stronger than the vocal, which is so stereotypically soul-esque that it does admittedly get a little stale. The high-pitched disco vocal, à la Marvin Gaye or Barry Gibb, is a welcome blast from the past, but also old news – particularly for the Gen X/Millennial audiences who were expecting explicit-content-warning misogyny and overdone shoutouts to other black musicians. But the synths, the drums, the hecking bassline? Yeah. That's some good audio content. Particularly in the former half of the album, with a top-tier array of songs including The Urban Theme, Sumthin' Sumthin', Ascension, and ...Til the Cops Come Knockin'. (The final-track reprise probably should've been cut, but alas.) 58 minutes of solid enjoyment that I would gladly sit through again. Public Enemy ain't got nothing on Public FWB. 4/5 Key tracks: The Urban Theme, Sumthin' Sumthin', Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)
I expect some people to dismiss this as elevator music but I don’t agree. I think this is wonderful, groovy and chill all at the same time! I enjoyed this a lot but I must admit that it gets a bit repetitive. However, it’s a great art to produce all these immaculate tracks that form such a cohesive album.
I liked it
L'adjectif «léché» convient parfaitement à cet album super maîtrisé qui coule et s'étire comme du caramel. Même moi qui ne suis pas très sensible à ce genre, j'ai bien aimé.
Muy bueno
Интересный, доступный, но без откровений.
I weirdly enjoyed this one! I'm usually not big on the background noise type of albums, but this was so smooth and relaxing 4 ⭐️
Easy listening. Not bad
24/1001 I’ve have probably heard every track on this record at least a dozen time, done several times more, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard this album in its entirety before. It is such a great 90s RnB record. Maxwell’s vocals are silky smooth and just pull you in. The funky, bouncy bass lines throughout the album are mesmerizing. This album blends jazz, funk, soul, with the sound of the mid 90s so well. 8.6/10
Great vibe but got a bit too sensual for me towards the end. Enjoyed overall though very groovy Specific rating -4.2 Fav song - urban theme Least fav - lonelys only company
Nice jazzy vibes; very good background music for my walkies
Neo soul classic
Really smooth and enjoyable.
I have not heard this album before, but it's right up my alley. Love the jazz/funk/smooth soul music and the lyrics are perfect. Good "love-makin'" music here. So after hearing this album, I went and checked out some of his later works and none of them really seemed to capture the magic on this album, so the fact that this one is on the list seems to make sense. Definitely worth hearing before I die! 3.5/5
Soulful from start to finish. Really enjoyed this listen, even if it's not something I'm likely to return to. 4.5
Nice groove on this. I felt the Suite stuff at the end was a little forced. I liked the reprise of "...Til the Cops Come Knockin' ", nice wat to close out the album. It's hard to believe this is already 30 years old. I remember Maxwell being big back in the day, but I didn't realize it was a LOT of days ago. Crap, I'm old. Top tracks: "The Urban Theme," "Welcome," "Sumthin' Sumthin' ", "...Til The Cops Come Knockin' " (original and reprise)
Спокойная фоновая музыка для приятного вечера. 7 из 10
The first half of the album is really strong, with the funk influences shining through along with the classic soul and R&B. I feel the second half was slightly weaker, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it overall, and how I would be happy to revisit it in the future. That makes it worthy of a 4 stars.
A decent r&b/soul album, I enjoyed listening to it and even added one song to 'liked' (Dancewithme). The album has a strong 'dancing/move your body' vibe, which is really cool. Listening to it I vividly imagine people dancing somewhere in a big city of the States or in some club.
Very nice music, mellow.
So seducing, damn
A cozy, smooth record
This had some cool funky moments with overall chill vibes. Good stuff, solid 3.5⭐️.
A cool mix of 70's soul released in 96. A generous helping of jazzy, soft sax. Yeah, just my style.
just super sexy to a tee, it doesnt really deviate from the formula, but it doesnt need to, its different in that its a lot smoother and funkier than contemporary RnB at the time, a nice detour until you come back to Ginuwine. I'll add it to the fuck music list.
A great album for a romantic evening of humping OR a solo evening in bed straight jorkin it
The songs are a little long for me. A lot of songs in the six minute range. But a fun listen. I would come back for a few of the songs, but probably won't do a full listen again.
SMooooth! 90’s R&B/Soul so good. Great album.
It was certainly a vibe. I loved the saxophones throughout the entire album and would absolutely turn it on if I’m looking for a chill, relaxing, schmexy saxophone vibe. But it didn’t overall grasp my interest cause I didn’t find all the lyricism amazing throughout the album. Definitely high quality stuff though, the lyrics just aren’t the focus, and generally very enjoyable.
One hell of a vibe. Smooth buttery and warm, an enjoyable listen fs
This is just very, very good. Smooth, funky, tasteful, masterful.
This album is sex. In all forms and emotions it’s sex. The album is 2000s cool. Sade production and backing with one of the last true New York musicians. It’s a classic cultural piece from the Afro-chic culture in Brooklyn before the hipsters razed it. The production stretches the piece into an entire world for your ears. Ebbing and flowing form the lush instrumentational meditations into lyrical phrasing to connect the themes.
It was a good listen, just what I needed after a difficult day.
The whole thing is dropping with cool. Just feels stylish and laid back. Like the soundtrack to a great JRPG. Very Gekkoukan High lol.
So smooth.
Hold up why did this actually go insanely hard.
Just damn. Tasty grooves abound. And a voice as sweet as the come. Serious heat on every song.
Had the wife and I reconsidering our decision not to make babies. 4.5
